In this landlocked Himalayan state, 00:00:19.11\00:00:21.35 over half a million women are living in pain. 00:00:21.38\00:00:24.39 I remember one lady, 00:00:24.42\00:00:25.75 she told us that she had been walking around 00:00:25.79\00:00:27.72 with this prolapse hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:00:27.76\00:00:32.66 In today's episode of Hope In Motion, 00:00:32.69\00:00:35.10 we look at how Asian Aid is supporting 00:00:35.13\00:00:37.03 the healing ministry of the church in Nepal. 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.87 We visit Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.10 an Adventist mission, 00:00:42.14\00:00:43.47 that's providing healthcare to women 00:00:43.51\00:00:45.04 suffering from uterine prolapse. 00:00:45.07\00:00:47.51 Well, we're pioneering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:00:47.54\00:00:50.21 because we truly believe 00:00:50.25\00:00:51.78 they're doing a wonderful job in the community. 00:00:51.81\00:00:55.32 And meet women whose lives have been changed 00:00:55.35\00:00:57.75 because of Asian Aid's involvement in Nepal. 00:00:57.79\00:00:59.99 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:01:13.64\00:01:16.71 an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.87 in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.91 and their communities. 00:01:21.94\00:01:23.68 An organization that's committed 00:01:23.71\00:01:25.41 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:01:25.45\00:01:27.95 and those who are in need, 00:01:27.98\00:01:29.58 serving communities in Nepal, 00:01:29.62\00:01:31.59 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and India. 00:01:31.62\00:01:35.72 For the last 40 years 00:01:43.43\00:01:45.23 Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people 00:01:45.27\00:01:48.14 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:48.17\00:01:52.27 Driven by their dedication to helping those 00:01:52.31\00:01:54.74 who have the least, 00:01:54.78\00:01:56.48 Asian Aid is an organization 00:01:56.51\00:01:58.18 focused on the welfare of children, 00:01:58.21\00:02:00.65 implementing diverse development projects, 00:02:00.68\00:02:03.45 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:03.49\00:02:06.15 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:02:06.19\00:02:09.52 to providing education for orphans, 00:02:09.56\00:02:12.03 deaf, and the blind children. 00:02:12.06\00:02:14.56 Giving them a sense of place, a home, 00:02:14.60\00:02:17.43 but above all, 00:02:17.47\00:02:18.80 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:02:18.83\00:02:21.90 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:21.94\00:02:25.57 giving hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:02:25.61\00:02:29.31 This is Hope In Motion. 00:02:29.34\00:02:31.81 Nepal is renowned for its natural beauty 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.24 and enduring culture, 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.04 having existed as early as its neighbors, 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.37 India and China, 00:02:59.41\00:03:00.94 Nepal has kept its cultural heritage intact 00:03:00.98\00:03:03.71 offering an extraordinary travel experience 00:03:03.75\00:03:06.08 for a visitor. 00:03:06.11\00:03:07.45 With 8 of the 10 highest mountain peaks in the world 00:03:10.69\00:03:13.76 including Mount Everest, 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.42 Nepal's landscape is truly inspiring. 00:03:15.46\00:03:18.26 Nepal is also one of the poorest countries 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.46 in the world 00:03:20.50\00:03:21.83 where one-third of the population 00:03:21.86\00:03:23.20 live below the poverty line earning less than $2 a day. 00:03:23.23\00:03:28.17 Well, most of our work is in India, 00:03:28.20\00:03:31.84 but when we come to Nepal, 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.31 we see a different level of poverty. 00:03:34.34\00:03:37.01 The economy is certainly worse here, 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.01 the level of poverty, the level of pollution, 00:03:39.05\00:03:42.42 there's a huge need 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.79 and we want to do more in Nepal. 00:03:43.82\00:03:45.89 With a majority of Nepalese depending on their daily wages, 00:03:45.92\00:03:49.62 obtaining healthcare is one of the main challenges 00:03:49.66\00:03:51.96 people face in this developing country. 00:03:51.99\00:03:54.33 This is where Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:03:54.36\00:03:56.16 plays a crucial role 00:03:56.20\00:03:57.53 in serving the medical needs of the people of Nepal. 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.27 Scheer Memorial Hospital was established 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.68 over 55 years ago 00:04:06.71\00:04:08.28 by Adventist missionaries serving in Nepal, 00:04:08.31\00:04:11.18 situated just outside Katmandu, 00:04:11.21\00:04:13.65 the hospital is an important institution 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.92 for the community, 00:04:15.95\00:04:17.29 and the Adventist church in Nepal. 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.42 Well, at the beginning, 00:04:19.45\00:04:23.63 after the establishment of the hospital 00:04:23.66\00:04:24.99 is when the church started to expand, 00:04:25.03\00:04:27.60 so Scheer Memorial Hospital is basically 00:04:27.63\00:04:30.13 the birth of the Adventist community in Nepal. 00:04:30.17\00:04:34.60 By now, the church had been growing 00:04:34.64\00:04:37.64 and now we have around 4,000 members 00:04:37.67\00:04:41.81 but the main organization 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.91 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nepal 00:04:43.95\00:04:45.78 is our hospital. 00:04:45.81\00:04:48.88 Although the cost of a doctor's consultation is only 33 cents, 00:04:48.92\00:04:52.49 some cannot even afford that. 00:04:52.52\00:04:55.86 People come from miles around 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.43 from rural villages to hilltop settlements 00:04:57.46\00:05:00.20 seeking medical help. 00:05:00.23\00:05:01.96 The hospital also provide ambulance services 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.33 to emergency cases, 00:05:04.37\00:05:06.03 often traversing through inaccessible 00:05:06.07\00:05:07.90 and dangerous roads. 00:05:07.94\00:05:09.30 Asian Aid's focus has always been about children, 00:05:23.79\00:05:26.86 providing children who are in need with education, 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.56 and giving them an opportunity for a better future 00:05:29.59\00:05:32.13 through its sponsorship program. 00:05:32.16\00:05:34.43 Along with the need to get healthcare and access 00:05:34.46\00:05:36.56 to medical centers, 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.00 the opportunity to get good education 00:05:38.03\00:05:40.17 is highly important to the people of Nepal. 00:05:40.20\00:05:42.64 The main thing is education. 00:05:42.67\00:05:45.77 And because in this part of the world 00:05:45.81\00:05:47.21 if you've got no education, 00:05:47.24\00:05:50.15 your life is really, you know, 00:05:50.18\00:05:55.08 you can't earn hardly anything. 00:05:55.12\00:05:56.72 All you can do is labor, 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.92 and in many places, 00:05:58.95\00:06:00.29 what the labor is paid is almost nothing, 00:06:00.32\00:06:03.22 so I think education just might make 00:06:03.26\00:06:06.49 so much difference in this part of the world, 00:06:06.53\00:06:08.30 more than it does in western countries. 00:06:08.33\00:06:12.37 But in a world where earning $2 a day 00:06:12.40\00:06:14.57 is a struggle for the majority of the people, 00:06:14.60\00:06:17.11 sending their children to school 00:06:17.14\00:06:18.47 is a strain on their finances 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.54 and it remains a distant dream. 00:06:20.58\00:06:22.68 Without sponsorship, 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.05 it would be very difficult for their children 00:06:24.08\00:06:25.85 to receive an education. 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.92 I'm here at the school where Asian Aid USA 00:06:27.95\00:06:30.85 is sponsoring a number of children, 00:06:30.89\00:06:33.19 makes the Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:06:33.22\00:06:35.59 in Katmandu in Nepal. 00:06:35.62\00:06:37.86 We have about 40 children at the school, 00:06:37.89\00:06:41.50 and we want to increase the numbers. 00:06:41.53\00:06:44.10 This school is very important Asian Aid USA 00:06:44.13\00:06:47.07 as we don't have many schools in Nepal of we are involved in, 00:06:47.10\00:06:51.37 and we have chosen this school 00:06:51.41\00:06:53.44 because of its close relationship 00:06:53.48\00:06:55.68 to the Scheer Memorial Hospital but also the need in the area. 00:06:55.71\00:06:59.78 Children from the local community 00:07:04.15\00:07:05.69 and some of the Hospital staff's children 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.52 attend the school. 00:07:07.56\00:07:08.99 Although the church is trying to develop 00:07:09.02\00:07:10.79 more schools in Nepal, 00:07:10.83\00:07:12.36 without sponsorship, 00:07:12.39\00:07:13.73 it would be difficult to attract students 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.26 from the community. 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.63 Suman Pranja is a fourth grade student 00:07:54.47\00:07:56.71 at the school, 00:07:56.74\00:07:58.07 orphaned at a very young age. 00:07:58.11\00:07:59.47 Suman grew up begging in the streets 00:07:59.51\00:08:01.61 in the town close by Scheer Memorial Hospital. 00:08:01.64\00:08:04.48 A local church pastor found him 00:08:04.51\00:08:06.08 and brought him to a small orphanage 00:08:06.11\00:08:07.62 he was running for abandoned children. 00:08:07.65\00:08:09.92 His church member supported his work. 00:08:09.95\00:08:11.45 He provided funding 00:08:11.49\00:08:12.82 for their food and accommodation, 00:08:12.85\00:08:14.46 but he found it difficult to pay their tuition fees. 00:08:14.49\00:08:17.33 Fortunately for Suman, 00:08:17.36\00:08:18.69 the pastor knew people at Scheer Memorial, 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.66 and Suman was enrolled at the school. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.76 He is now sponsored by Asian Aid USA. 00:08:22.80\00:08:28.07 I'm very happy that Suman could go to the school, 00:08:28.10\00:08:31.51 and he is getting sponsorship. 00:08:31.54\00:08:33.74 And this school at the hospital is a Christian school 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.95 and he could continue to learn about Jesus there. 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.31 My name is Goma Paudyal. 00:09:07.54\00:09:09.88 I teach in playgroup. 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.05 These kids are lovely and I enjoy teaching them. 00:09:12.08\00:09:15.55 This is the best job I enjoy the most 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.59 and I don't even notice when the time pass 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.29 when I'm playing with them and teaching them. 00:09:20.32\00:09:22.56 This is what I enjoy the most here. 00:09:22.59\00:09:27.73 The school provides employment to teachers 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.76 who are from the local community, 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.43 like Goma Paudyal, 00:09:31.47\00:09:32.97 who otherwise would have to travel long distances 00:09:33.00\00:09:35.20 or go to Katmandu to find a good teaching job. 00:09:35.24\00:09:39.84 The school also provides 00:09:39.87\00:09:41.21 one nourishing meal a day for all children 00:09:41.24\00:09:43.81 as part of its incentive program to encourage parents 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.61 to send their children to school. 00:09:46.65\00:09:51.79 Education is highly valued in Nepal, 00:09:51.82\00:09:54.26 as it is in rest of South Asia. 00:09:54.29\00:09:56.76 Parents perceive a good education 00:09:56.79\00:09:58.13 as a catalyst for change. 00:09:58.16\00:10:00.26 This perception is not just for a better future 00:10:00.30\00:10:02.60 for their children, 00:10:02.63\00:10:03.97 but they also believe it will bring changes 00:10:04.00\00:10:05.53 to their own fortunes. 00:10:05.57\00:10:07.97 In these cultures, usually, 00:10:08.00\00:10:10.04 the educated children will care for the parents also 00:10:10.07\00:10:12.57 when they get old 00:10:12.61\00:10:13.98 because if a parent gets to the place 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.34 where they are too sick and too old 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.95 to work in the fields, 00:10:18.98\00:10:20.32 so whatever laboring work they've been doing, 00:10:20.35\00:10:22.65 well, what do you do? 00:10:22.68\00:10:24.42 You basically, beg and starve or, 00:10:24.45\00:10:27.36 you know, depending where you live, 00:10:27.39\00:10:29.56 maybe some beggars, you know, can make a little bit 00:10:29.59\00:10:32.43 but in remote areas, 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.90 especially if they're in a village 00:10:34.93\00:10:36.26 where everybody is poor, 00:10:36.30\00:10:37.63 you know, they're lucky to get anything. 00:10:37.67\00:10:39.77 So I think a lot of parents also think about that, 00:10:39.80\00:10:43.57 that, you know, if my child gets a good education, 00:10:43.61\00:10:46.07 it will also be a blessing to me in my old age. 00:10:46.11\00:10:48.34 My name is Andrew Rapp. 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.12 I'm from Walla Walla University. 00:10:56.15\00:10:57.95 I'm studying business marketing in international business, 00:10:57.99\00:11:01.52 but I took a gap here to come to Nepal and work 00:11:01.56\00:11:04.93 as a volunteer school teacher and youth mentor. 00:11:04.96\00:11:08.73 Colorado native Andrew 00:11:08.76\00:11:10.17 is a volunteer teacher at the school. 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.57 Because of its close association with the hospital, 00:11:12.60\00:11:15.34 the school has been privileged to bring in overseas teachers 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.37 who come here bringing a new approach to teaching. 00:11:18.41\00:11:21.08 This not only exposes the student 00:11:21.11\00:11:22.74 to an international array of teachers, 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.01 but also helps the missionary teachers 00:11:25.05\00:11:27.05 get a different outlook in life. 00:11:27.08\00:11:29.65 I think, for me, 00:11:29.68\00:11:31.25 it is really important 00:11:31.29\00:11:32.62 just to be able to take a break, 00:11:32.65\00:11:35.12 take a step back from my life and school 00:11:35.16\00:11:37.63 and being so focused on what I want to do, 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.30 and take a step back and see what other people need 00:11:40.33\00:11:44.50 that there is more important things than just my concerns. 00:11:44.53\00:11:48.10 There's people that have more immediate needs 00:11:48.14\00:11:52.31 than the fickle things 00:11:52.34\00:11:53.68 that I think might be so important back home. 00:11:53.71\00:11:56.95 No doubt, a good Christian education 00:11:56.98\00:11:59.31 and schools providing that opportunity 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.42 is a beacon of hope for the children here. 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.95 And Asian Aid sponsorship program 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.15 is helping them see that ray of hope 00:12:06.19\00:12:07.69 in this impoverished, yet idyllic region. 00:12:07.72\00:12:11.33 But all is not what it seems. 00:12:11.36\00:12:13.56 Underneath its beauty in the fields and hilltops, 00:12:13.60\00:12:16.16 villages and towns, women are living in pain. 00:12:16.20\00:12:19.53 When we come back, 00:12:19.57\00:12:20.90 we'll look at how over half a million women 00:12:20.94\00:12:22.77 are suffering from uterine prolapse, 00:12:22.80\00:12:24.94 and discover how Asian Aid is helping ease their pain. 00:12:24.97\00:12:27.78 My wife Angela and I are here in Andhra Pradesh, India, 00:12:44.13\00:12:47.56 visiting some of the Asian Aid projects 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.40 to see for ourselves 00:12:49.43\00:12:50.87 how the work that is being done here is transforming lives. 00:12:50.90\00:12:54.37 Especially, the lives of orphaned children 00:12:54.40\00:12:57.14 and abandoned children, 00:12:57.17\00:12:58.57 children from the tribal communities, 00:12:58.61\00:13:01.24 and we've discovered that because of sponsors like you, 00:13:01.28\00:13:03.48 they now have a place that they can call home. 00:13:03.51\00:13:06.08 They have wonderful clothing, nutritious food, 00:13:06.11\00:13:08.45 and they are being prepared to propel themselves 00:13:08.48\00:13:11.89 into the future for a promising career. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.72 But above all that, because of sponsors like you, 00:13:14.76\00:13:17.63 they now have hope, hope for a better future. 00:13:17.66\00:13:21.23 One of the huge problems 00:13:34.28\00:13:35.61 that's existing in the world today 00:13:35.64\00:13:37.65 is that of human trafficking. 00:13:37.68\00:13:40.62 Of course, it is a global thing 00:13:40.65\00:13:42.48 but because I have worked a lot in India and Nepal, 00:13:42.52\00:13:45.25 I know that it is huge in these countries. 00:13:45.29\00:13:48.76 And the way these children are treated 00:13:48.79\00:13:50.43 is just unbelievable 00:13:50.46\00:13:52.79 and what they suffer, you just could not believe. 00:13:52.83\00:13:56.20 And so with your help and we're so excited 00:13:56.23\00:14:00.34 that Asian Aid has now got the project 00:14:00.37\00:14:03.10 called Operation Child Rescue, 00:14:03.14\00:14:05.77 we can make a difference and do something 00:14:05.81\00:14:08.14 for these children before this happens to them 00:14:08.18\00:14:11.88 and for some of them that can be rescued 00:14:11.91\00:14:14.02 from this situation. 00:14:14.05\00:14:15.98 If you would like to become involved, 00:14:16.02\00:14:17.75 we would just be so very, very grateful. 00:14:17.79\00:14:20.19 Nepal, sandwiched between Asian giants, 00:14:42.04\00:14:45.01 China and India, 00:14:45.05\00:14:46.72 is a landlocked sovereign state in the Himalayas. 00:14:46.75\00:14:49.58 The mountain range in the north 00:14:49.62\00:14:51.15 is home to eight of the world's tallest mountain peaks, 00:14:51.19\00:14:54.12 including the highest point on earth, Mount Everest, 00:14:54.16\00:14:57.39 thus making it popular for mountaineering. 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.86 Hinduism is practiced by over 80% of the population, 00:14:59.89\00:15:03.50 making it the country 00:15:03.53\00:15:04.87 with the highest percentage of Hindus. 00:15:04.90\00:15:06.63 With the birthplace of Buddha located in this region, 00:15:06.67\00:15:09.60 Nepal is also historically linked with Buddhism, 00:15:09.64\00:15:12.71 making it culturally very rich. 00:15:12.74\00:15:15.28 However, Nepal is also economically challenged 00:15:15.31\00:15:18.55 and is home to some of the poorest people 00:15:18.58\00:15:20.22 on the planet. 00:15:20.25\00:15:21.58 And this economically backward environment 00:15:21.62\00:15:23.89 and harsh terrain where infrastructure 00:15:23.92\00:15:25.85 and transport is unavailable, 00:15:25.89\00:15:28.12 women become the beast of burden. 00:15:28.16\00:15:29.86 Economic difficulties and cultural perceptions 00:15:38.87\00:15:41.67 have made women of Nepal suffer silently. 00:15:41.70\00:15:44.87 The condition is called uterine prolapse. 00:15:44.91\00:15:49.14 Yeah, this is something very interesting 00:15:49.18\00:15:50.58 because this condition of uterine prolapse 00:15:50.61\00:15:52.95 is not so common in most of the countries, 00:15:52.98\00:15:55.95 but interestingly, in Nepal, 00:15:55.98\00:15:58.45 it is very common to see uterine prolapse in women. 00:15:58.49\00:16:03.53 We don't know exactly the reason 00:16:03.56\00:16:05.03 but over here, 00:16:05.06\00:16:07.23 the ladies have to carry a lot of weight, 00:16:07.26\00:16:09.96 so weight carrying also provides 00:16:10.00\00:16:13.87 incidence of prolapse more high, 00:16:13.90\00:16:17.11 also having more children, 00:16:17.14\00:16:18.91 also provide more incidents of having this problem, 00:16:18.94\00:16:23.21 so it is multifactorial, 00:16:23.24\00:16:25.88 you cannot point only one thing, 00:16:25.91\00:16:29.18 but what we know is that in Nepal 00:16:29.22\00:16:31.92 it is very common to have this problem. 00:16:31.95\00:16:36.99 Uterine prolapse is a condition in a woman 00:16:37.03\00:16:39.46 where her uterus just falls off her body. 00:16:39.49\00:16:42.63 We learned that one of the main reasons 00:16:42.66\00:16:44.03 women get prolapse 00:16:44.07\00:16:45.43 is because they're forced to carry heavy loads, 00:16:45.47\00:16:48.27 sometimes around 50 kilos, strapped around their forehead, 00:16:48.30\00:16:51.94 pressing down on their neck. 00:16:51.97\00:16:54.21 Often, they have to continue with this heavy labor 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.44 right after childbirth. 00:16:56.48\00:16:58.01 The stress and pressure this puts on their lower back 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.52 is so dangerous, 00:17:00.55\00:17:01.95 and their delicate body cannot support their uterus. 00:17:01.98\00:17:04.69 We cannot go into details of what is the condition, 00:17:12.53\00:17:15.76 but how this condition affects the woman in an extreme way, 00:17:15.80\00:17:21.84 to the extreme that sometimes the husband leaves them 00:17:21.87\00:17:26.14 because of the marital problem that it may have. 00:17:26.17\00:17:29.78 So yes, it is a very 00:17:29.81\00:17:32.41 incapacitating condition for the women 00:17:32.45\00:17:34.58 and the affect is not only on the women 00:17:34.62\00:17:36.58 but also the entire family. 00:17:36.62\00:17:39.62 In this patriarchal society, 00:17:39.65\00:17:41.62 women suffering from prolapse are ashamed of their condition, 00:17:41.66\00:17:44.63 and they don't want to come forward 00:17:44.66\00:17:46.33 and suffer in silence for decades. 00:17:46.36\00:17:49.03 The psychological impact this has on their well-being 00:17:49.06\00:17:52.00 affects their already battered physical condition. 00:17:52.03\00:17:54.90 Thousands go undetected, 00:17:54.94\00:17:56.97 and when they're discovered, 00:17:57.01\00:17:58.47 they become outcast, excluded, 00:17:58.51\00:18:00.64 and deserted by their husbands and families. 00:18:00.68\00:18:02.78 Today, women suffering 00:18:15.19\00:18:16.93 from uterine prolapse have hope. 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.09 Over the last 10 years, 00:18:19.13\00:18:20.80 Asian Aid has funded a program 00:18:20.83\00:18:22.63 along with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:22.66\00:18:24.83 to identify these women 00:18:24.87\00:18:26.20 wherever they are and facilitate surgeries 00:18:26.23\00:18:28.70 and provide much-needed preventative health education. 00:18:28.74\00:18:32.07 Well, we're pioneering with Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:18:32.11\00:18:34.78 because we truly believe 00:18:34.81\00:18:36.34 that doing a wonderful job in the community, 00:18:36.38\00:18:39.88 it's the only Adventist Hospital in Nepal, 00:18:39.91\00:18:43.39 it's a critical part of the church in Nepal. 00:18:43.42\00:18:46.89 And they now have the facilities 00:18:46.92\00:18:50.79 to do the prolapse operations, 00:18:50.83\00:18:54.03 and so our funding program is very valuable to them 00:18:54.06\00:18:58.90 because they have plenty of capacity. 00:18:58.93\00:19:01.30 And so for us, it's very rewarding 00:19:01.34\00:19:05.37 not only to make the change of lives of the women 00:19:05.41\00:19:10.78 but also we're able to help the institution 00:19:10.81\00:19:14.22 in gaining work and doing work in the community. 00:19:14.25\00:19:18.25 Here at the hospital, 00:19:18.29\00:19:20.36 we have done a lot of prolapse operations. 00:19:20.39\00:19:23.36 I think I forget how many years we've been doing it now, 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.09 maybe 10 or 11 years, but during that time, 00:19:26.13\00:19:28.76 we have now operated on between 8,000 to 9,000 ladies. 00:19:28.80\00:19:32.77 And to see the difference it makes, 00:19:32.80\00:19:35.00 you know, I just can't imagine 00:19:35.04\00:19:39.34 how these women like there's been one... 00:19:39.37\00:19:41.34 I remember one lady, 00:19:41.38\00:19:42.71 she told us that she had been walking around 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.61 with this prolapse hanging out of her body for 50 years. 00:19:44.65\00:19:49.95 Well, as a hospital, we can say 00:19:49.98\00:19:52.09 that we are very grateful for Asian Aid 00:19:52.12\00:19:54.96 because they have been providing surgeries 00:19:54.99\00:19:57.33 or support for surgeries for the last two years, 00:19:57.36\00:20:00.43 and we are grateful on behalf of their families 00:20:00.46\00:20:03.33 and the patients that we have been treating, 00:20:03.37\00:20:05.17 thanks to the help of Asian Aid. 00:20:05.20\00:20:07.54 All throughout its history, 00:20:18.91\00:20:20.32 Scheer Memorial Hospital has been privileged 00:20:20.35\00:20:22.82 to host a number of medical professionals from abroad 00:20:22.85\00:20:25.65 who volunteer their time and expertise conducting camps. 00:20:25.69\00:20:29.46 This has benefited thousands of people 00:20:29.49\00:20:31.19 from the local community, especially women. 00:20:31.23\00:20:34.63 This week a group from Sydney Adventist Hospital 00:20:34.66\00:20:37.53 from Sydney, Australia 00:20:37.57\00:20:39.03 is here conducting prolapse operations. 00:20:39.07\00:20:41.80 If you say to these women, have it fixed, 00:20:41.84\00:20:44.27 not have that prolapse anymore, they're so happy. 00:20:44.31\00:20:47.34 They hug us, they kiss us, 00:20:47.38\00:20:49.11 they want to shake your hand, they want to touch us. 00:20:49.14\00:20:52.35 And it's just humbling, very humbling 00:20:52.38\00:20:56.25 because we're so grateful, 00:20:56.28\00:20:58.49 you know, westernized society 00:20:58.52\00:21:00.22 that you just don't realize that how hard it is for me 00:21:00.26\00:21:04.93 to be working under the circumstances 00:21:04.96\00:21:07.13 that we got to work under. 00:21:07.16\00:21:10.03 Karen is part of a volunteer group, 00:21:10.07\00:21:11.80 Open Heart International from Sydney. 00:21:11.83\00:21:14.30 These are medical professionals 00:21:14.34\00:21:16.00 that go to various developing countries, 00:21:16.04\00:21:17.84 each year, conducting medical camps. 00:21:17.87\00:21:20.31 For Karen and her team, 00:21:20.34\00:21:21.68 camps such as these may seem just another day's work, 00:21:21.71\00:21:24.68 but it has a profound impact on these women 00:21:24.71\00:21:27.05 who suffer from prolapse. 00:21:27.08\00:21:28.85 And for the volunteers, it's an opportunity 00:21:28.88\00:21:31.35 to make a difference in their own humble ways. 00:21:31.39\00:21:34.39 Volunteering to me, it's emotional. 00:21:34.42\00:21:38.56 You will get very drawn into 00:21:38.59\00:21:40.73 what they don't have and what we can do to them. 00:21:40.76\00:21:43.37 We might think we're just doing what we do everyday 00:21:43.40\00:21:45.93 back at home, 00:21:45.97\00:21:47.34 but for them, it's life changing. 00:21:47.37\00:21:49.44 And even though it might seem just a drop in the ocean, 00:21:49.47\00:21:55.04 for 80 to 90 women, 00:21:55.08\00:21:57.51 in the 10 days that we're here operating, 00:21:57.55\00:21:59.71 it changes their lives, and that change of life 00:21:59.75\00:22:03.08 for these people makes it emotional. 00:22:03.12\00:22:07.46 Scheer Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed 00:22:07.49\00:22:09.62 with the inflow of women 00:22:09.66\00:22:10.99 needing surgeries for uterine prolapse. 00:22:11.03\00:22:13.33 Without these volunteers, 00:22:13.36\00:22:14.86 it will be a tough task to facilitate them all. 00:22:14.90\00:22:18.03 In the hospital, we have 200 to 300 surgeries 00:22:18.07\00:22:20.54 will be there in the year. 00:22:20.57\00:22:22.14 Out of 200 to 300, 00:22:22.17\00:22:23.51 we have 30% to 40 % of surgeries 00:22:23.54\00:22:27.01 will be done for uterine prolapse. 00:22:27.04\00:22:29.68 The only thing that is stopping us 00:22:29.71\00:22:32.31 to doing more 00:22:32.35\00:22:33.68 it is basically the financial aspect. 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.78 If we have more funding, we can do more. 00:22:35.82\00:22:39.49 Right now, we do have some funding from organization 00:22:39.52\00:22:42.42 that they come and do the surgery themselves, 00:22:42.46\00:22:45.26 but how many we can do, 00:22:45.29\00:22:46.73 it is basically, 300, 400, it's countless 00:22:46.76\00:22:52.40 because the incidence is extremely high. 00:22:52.43\00:22:54.57 Over half a million women are suffering 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.11 from prolapse in Nepal, 00:23:01.14\00:23:02.58 and Scheer Memorial Hospital is a place they can come 00:23:02.61\00:23:05.28 to get it fixed and ease their suffering. 00:23:05.31\00:23:07.98 It's so apt to say that Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:23:08.02\00:23:11.29 is truly a beacon on the hilltop. 00:23:11.32\00:23:14.56 To have an institution 00:23:14.59\00:23:16.56 and for Asian Aid to provide the opportunity to these ladies 00:23:16.59\00:23:21.36 who don't have to live with this, 00:23:21.40\00:23:22.96 this is curable, this is fixable. 00:23:23.00\00:23:27.20 You know, that's the benefit. 00:23:27.24\00:23:28.64 Imagine when a lady has the operation, 00:23:28.67\00:23:31.54 she goes back, 00:23:31.57\00:23:32.91 she is now accepted into the home. 00:23:32.94\00:23:36.24 She can mend relationships. 00:23:36.28\00:23:38.68 She can add value to the family. 00:23:38.71\00:23:40.98 She can add value to the community 00:23:41.02\00:23:42.95 through the other ladies, spread the good news, 00:23:42.98\00:23:46.65 tell them about how people love them 00:23:46.69\00:23:48.46 and want to make things different for them. 00:23:48.49\00:23:51.29 Isn't that a blessing? 00:23:51.33\00:23:55.40 The good news is spreading among women in Nepal. 00:23:55.43\00:23:58.23 The more women are identified, educated, 00:23:58.27\00:24:00.74 and brought to these camps, 00:24:00.77\00:24:02.17 the more women are willing to come out 00:24:02.20\00:24:03.84 and seek medical care. 00:24:03.87\00:24:05.57 This one here, her name is Puneswari, 00:24:05.61\00:24:08.64 and she actually has... 00:24:08.68\00:24:10.65 Because she has been so grateful 00:24:10.68\00:24:12.38 for what's happened in her life, 00:24:12.41\00:24:14.18 she has now brought 25 more ladies 00:24:14.22\00:24:17.59 who have had operations. 00:24:17.62\00:24:19.52 And I think that's really special. 00:24:19.55\00:24:21.52 And so they just... 00:24:21.56\00:24:22.89 When we told them we were having a filming today, 00:24:22.92\00:24:25.13 they were just so thrilled to think 00:24:25.16\00:24:26.70 that they could come inside 00:24:26.73\00:24:28.23 how grateful they are for the transformation 00:24:28.26\00:24:30.63 that's happened in their lives. 00:24:30.67\00:24:32.37 How do you think this operation has changed their lives? 00:24:32.40\00:24:35.20 Well, it's changed their lives, 00:24:35.24\00:24:36.57 and now they can walk comfortably, 00:24:36.60\00:24:38.67 they're able to work and help 00:24:38.71\00:24:40.81 and care for their families, it's just, 00:24:40.84\00:24:43.81 it's a totally transforming thing 00:24:43.85\00:24:46.05 that I think we just wouldn't understand 00:24:46.08\00:24:49.08 unless we had actually been through 00:24:49.12\00:24:50.69 the same experiences they have been. 00:24:50.72\00:24:53.15 And for this lady to bring 25, 00:24:53.19\00:24:54.86 I think that's really something 00:24:54.89\00:24:56.29 because that shows how grateful she is 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.93 for the operation that she has had. 00:24:59.96\00:25:02.00 Today, Adventist missions like Scheer Memorial Hospital, 00:25:07.04\00:25:10.41 organizations like Asian Aid, 00:25:10.44\00:25:12.37 and the goodwill of hundreds of volunteers and missionaries 00:25:12.41\00:25:15.54 is making a difference 00:25:15.58\00:25:17.35 and bringing a healing touch to women in Nepal 00:25:17.38\00:25:20.15 transforming their lives every single day. 00:25:20.18\00:25:22.98 Together it is possible 00:25:23.02\00:25:24.55 to facilitate this transformation 00:25:24.59\00:25:26.49 for these grateful women. 00:25:26.52\00:25:28.22 It is possible to put smiles back on their faces. 00:25:28.26\00:25:31.36 Just to hear them say, "Thank you." 00:25:31.39\00:25:33.96 They are a nation, 00:25:40.37\00:25:42.57 they are so loving and thankful. 00:25:42.60\00:25:45.61 And if I can just help a little bit, 00:25:45.64\00:25:47.74 I'll keep coming back. 00:25:47.78\00:25:49.34
