The medical ministry 00:00:05.10\00:00:06.43 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:00:06.47\00:00:08.17 not only attends to the medical needs 00:00:08.20\00:00:10.31 but also shows the love of Jesus 00:00:10.34\00:00:12.41 to those who come to its facilities 00:00:12.44\00:00:14.54 seeking medical treatment. 00:00:14.58\00:00:16.44 In this episode of "Hope In Motion" 00:00:16.48\00:00:19.18 we go to Giffard Memorial Hospital 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.42 and the college of nursing in Nuzvid, India 00:00:21.45\00:00:24.22 and see how Asian Aid is helping 00:00:24.25\00:00:25.82 this pioneering institution 00:00:25.85\00:00:27.66 in training young people in God's service. 00:00:27.69\00:00:30.53 I guess we traditionally think of sponsorship 00:00:30.56\00:00:32.99 of children sitting in a classroom 00:00:33.03\00:00:35.20 but here at Giffard Memorial Hospital 00:00:35.23\00:00:37.60 we see the end result, we see the success of girls 00:00:37.63\00:00:42.44 especially who are now doing full nursing courses. 00:00:42.47\00:00:46.64 So they are making a real contribution 00:00:46.68\00:00:48.88 to the medical work of the church. 00:00:48.91\00:00:51.68 Vinnie Alice Joseph, a gold medal winner 00:00:51.71\00:00:54.32 from its nursing program 00:00:54.35\00:00:55.88 and see how Asian Aid sponsorship 00:00:55.92\00:00:57.72 has helped her achieve this great feat. 00:00:57.75\00:01:00.29 I think it's a great blessing being sponsored 00:01:00.32\00:01:02.59 and I'm thankful for what they did for my life, 00:01:02.62\00:01:06.13 for bringing me to this stage 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.16 and I hope one day that I would do something for them. 00:01:08.20\00:01:11.73 Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.08 an organization fostering permanent positive change 00:01:28.12\00:01:31.39 in the lives of disadvantaged children and their communities, 00:01:31.42\00:01:35.06 an organization that is committed 00:01:35.09\00:01:36.99 to making a difference in the lives of children 00:01:37.03\00:01:39.43 and those who are in need. 00:01:39.46\00:01:41.10 Serving communities in Nepal, 00:01:41.13\00:01:43.00 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and India 00:01:43.03\00:01:47.87 for the last 40 years 00:01:54.84\00:01:56.64 Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people 00:01:56.68\00:01:59.51 and their investment has proven infinite returns 00:01:59.55\00:02:03.69 driven by their dedication 00:02:03.72\00:02:05.25 to helping those who have the least. 00:02:05.29\00:02:07.86 Asian Aid is an organization focused 00:02:07.89\00:02:10.16 on the welfare of children, 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.26 implementing diverse development projects 00:02:12.29\00:02:14.86 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:02:14.90\00:02:17.60 Their outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:02:17.63\00:02:20.77 to providing an education 00:02:20.80\00:02:22.30 for orphans, deaf and the blind children. 00:02:22.34\00:02:26.04 Giving them a sense of place, a home 00:02:26.07\00:02:28.84 but above all Asian Aid is an organization giving hope, 00:02:28.88\00:02:33.42 giving hope to children, giving hope to communities, 00:02:33.45\00:02:37.05 giving hope to the ones who needed the most. 00:02:37.09\00:02:40.66 This is "Hope In Motion." 00:02:40.69\00:02:43.93 Usha Rani is a second year nursing student 00:03:06.95\00:03:09.52 at the college of nursing at Nuzvid, India. 00:03:09.55\00:03:12.39 As part of the Giffard Memorial Hospital 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.66 the college of nursing brings in aspiring nursing students 00:03:14.69\00:03:17.53 from Adventist backgrounds like Usha. 00:03:17.56\00:03:21.16 Asian Aid over the years has helped many young women 00:03:21.20\00:03:24.17 like Usha through sponsorship. 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.84 Because of the Asian Aid many, many, many students 00:03:26.87\00:03:31.17 could educate themselves in our college. 00:03:31.21\00:03:34.98 It's a tremendous opportunity for the students to grab that 00:03:35.01\00:03:41.55 and to excel in the studies and then educate themselves 00:03:41.58\00:03:46.96 and have a bright future. 00:03:46.99\00:03:50.26 Usha Rani is looking forward to this bright future. 00:03:50.29\00:03:53.90 Having born into a poor Adventist family, 00:03:53.93\00:03:56.46 Usha has been supported by Asian Aid 00:03:56.50\00:03:58.33 sponsorship program from kindergarten. 00:03:58.37\00:04:00.74 She is the youngest of four girls in the family 00:04:00.77\00:04:03.24 and Usha's parents had to constantly worry 00:04:03.27\00:04:05.37 about their financial instability. 00:04:05.41\00:04:07.71 This led to marital issues between her parents 00:04:07.74\00:04:10.28 and they separated when Usha was still a young girl. 00:04:10.31\00:04:13.11 Her mother took care of her and her three older sisters 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.92 by selling vegetables in the village. 00:04:15.95\00:04:18.25 Their hardship was compounded 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.06 when her mother was hospitalized with jaundice. 00:04:20.09\00:04:23.16 By the time they realized that she is suffering 00:04:23.19\00:04:25.79 from jaundice and take her for treatment it became worse. 00:04:25.83\00:04:29.16 They couldn't treat her. 00:04:29.20\00:04:30.77 Doctors said no hopes 00:04:30.80\00:04:32.37 and she was like one week in the hospital 00:04:32.40\00:04:36.40 but no improvement in the health status. 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.41 Like that only she passed away in the hospital only. 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.58 That time also I was in hostel only. 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.31 I don't know anything 00:04:44.35\00:04:45.68 about my mother's health condition. 00:04:45.71\00:04:47.98 Then by the time I came here 00:04:48.02\00:04:49.52 she is no more, she passed away. 00:04:49.55\00:04:53.89 When our motherpassed away 00:04:53.92\00:04:55.69 I wanted to bring my husband here 00:04:55.72\00:04:57.79 and take care of my sister 00:04:57.83\00:04:59.63 because she was still very young at that time, 00:04:59.66\00:05:02.03 but my husband was not willing. 00:05:02.06\00:05:03.93 He said, when your father is not taking care of you all 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.00 why should I take care of her. 00:05:07.04\00:05:08.64 So my husband left me 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.37 and I came here to take care of them. 00:05:10.41\00:05:13.24 Usha's mother died five years ago 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.95 and legal requirements forced her father to be her guardian. 00:05:16.98\00:05:20.88 After when my mother died its compulsory 00:05:20.92\00:05:24.09 I should stay with my father because no source for me. 00:05:24.12\00:05:27.59 Nobody is to take care of us because already 00:05:27.62\00:05:29.96 my three sisters they got married, they left, 00:05:29.99\00:05:32.16 they went to stay with their husbands. 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.63 After that when I was staying with my father 00:05:34.66\00:05:37.90 he also became sick because he is also became old, 00:05:37.93\00:05:42.47 he couldn't work. 00:05:42.50\00:05:43.84 He is diabetic patient. 00:05:43.87\00:05:45.87 Then due to some problem, family problems my elder sister 00:05:45.91\00:05:51.08 she had some problem with her husband 00:05:51.11\00:05:53.82 she came home and now she is taking care 00:05:53.85\00:05:56.42 of my father and me too. 00:05:56.45\00:05:58.55 Poverty passes on from generation to generation. 00:06:04.59\00:06:07.93 Without any education people in rural India 00:06:07.96\00:06:10.80 are forced to follow their parents into working 00:06:10.83\00:06:12.97 in the fields or doing manual labor, 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.17 sometimes as domestic helps. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.77 Usha's father although old and diabetic is forced to work 00:06:17.81\00:06:21.61 in the fields nearby just so he can earn something 00:06:21.64\00:06:24.15 to support himself and his eldest daughter 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.08 who is caring for him. 00:06:26.11\00:06:27.45 Usha's sister Ratna Kumari 00:06:32.92\00:06:35.06 owns a petty shop selling vegetables. 00:06:35.09\00:06:37.59 Fortunately for Usha she has the opportunity 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.40 to break the shackles of poverty. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.40 Asian Aid sponsorship has given her that opportunity 00:06:42.43\00:06:45.50 to uplift herself and help her support 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.77 her family in the future. 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.84 If you help the family 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.51 that help may not be for longer time. 00:06:51.54\00:06:54.21 But if you help a child in a family 00:06:54.24\00:06:56.95 and educate the child and that child 00:06:56.98\00:06:58.91 when he gets into job he can take care of the entire family 00:06:58.95\00:07:02.62 and it can be a big blessing to the entire family. 00:07:02.65\00:07:05.65 So therefore Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.79 wherever we have our colleges, wherever we have a school, 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.16 wherever we have hospitals we take it like a privilege 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.96 to invite students from all backgrounds 00:07:15.00\00:07:17.33 and to educate them so that they would become, 00:07:17.37\00:07:20.50 they would become again become workers, 00:07:20.54\00:07:23.51 come back our institutions and serve in our institutions. 00:07:23.54\00:07:27.74 So what we do it will not go in waste 00:07:27.78\00:07:30.58 but they will come back 00:07:30.61\00:07:32.25 and then help taking care of responsibilities, 00:07:32.28\00:07:35.22 taking care of various jobs that we entrust to them. 00:07:35.25\00:07:39.25 I would say if there is no sponsorship 00:07:39.29\00:07:41.89 I think majority of them 00:07:41.92\00:07:43.66 will not be having this education 00:07:43.69\00:07:45.23 that they are actually going through. 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.06 And if you actually take the financial background 00:07:47.10\00:07:49.86 of many of our students 00:07:49.90\00:07:51.23 they come from very poor backgrounds. 00:07:51.27\00:07:53.34 And some of them have really pathetic background 00:07:53.37\00:07:56.84 and this sponsorship that they are getting 00:07:56.87\00:07:59.31 from very kind donors, 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.24 I mean God's, I pray that God will bless them 00:08:01.28\00:08:04.38 because they're really doing a lot of services 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.65 and by helping these poor students 00:08:06.68\00:08:09.75 in getting some education they are really going 00:08:09.78\00:08:12.39 a long way to build a bright future for these students. 00:08:12.42\00:08:15.16 Without this sponsorship I'm sure 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.93 they will not be able to get this education 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.29 and they will not be able to do what they're doing 00:08:19.33\00:08:22.26 and their future we do not know 00:08:22.30\00:08:23.63 what it could be given the financial condition 00:08:23.67\00:08:25.97 from which they come. 00:08:26.00\00:08:27.34 So I really pray-- 00:08:27.37\00:08:28.70 we always remember these sponsors 00:08:28.74\00:08:30.21 because we do not know 00:08:30.24\00:08:31.64 whether they have seen these children or not 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.44 but with kindness they have been helping our students 00:08:33.48\00:08:36.68 and we really appreciate them 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.05 and we pray that God will bless those sponsors 00:08:38.08\00:08:40.58 who have been helping our students. 00:08:40.62\00:08:43.85 I would not have got that sponsorship 00:08:43.89\00:08:45.85 from Asian Aid definitely I'm not sure 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.09 that I would have studied in such Adventist institutions. 00:08:49.12\00:08:53.66 Sponsorship is like they are supporting me financially. 00:08:53.70\00:08:57.60 Everything they are giving, books and all. 00:08:57.63\00:08:59.93 From LKG I was supported by Asian Aid help only, sir. 00:08:59.97\00:09:05.07 Usha Rani has gone through Asian Aid 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.88 sponsorship program since kindergarten 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.18 and Asian aid is continuing to support Usha 00:09:09.21\00:09:11.78 through her nursing program 00:09:11.81\00:09:13.15 at the College of Nursing in Nuzvid. 00:09:13.18\00:09:15.72 Nurses are in high demand and no doubt 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.35 Usha would be employed almost immediately 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.42 upon her completing her nursing program. 00:09:20.46\00:09:22.82 Thanks to Asian Aid sponsorship, 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.73 she will not only stand 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.09 on her own as a working professional 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.13 but also be of service to her family 00:09:28.16\00:09:30.40 and above all to the community as a whole. 00:09:30.43\00:09:34.37 I guess we traditionally think of sponsorship 00:09:34.40\00:09:36.67 of children sitting in a classroom 00:09:36.71\00:09:38.97 but here at Giffard Memorial Hospital 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.44 we see the end result, 00:09:41.48\00:09:42.91 we see the success of girls especially 00:09:42.94\00:09:47.72 who are now doing full nursing courses, 00:09:47.75\00:09:50.52 who are making a real contribution 00:09:50.55\00:09:52.62 to the medical work of the church, 00:09:52.65\00:09:55.02 even to community hospitals. 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.13 My father cannot support us 00:10:00.60\00:10:03.06 and we don't have any brothers to support us. 00:10:03.10\00:10:06.37 I'm so thankful to Asian Aid and my sister's sponsors. 00:10:06.40\00:10:11.27 If Asian Aid is not there 00:10:11.31\00:10:13.17 I would not make her to study this much. 00:10:13.21\00:10:15.81 We would have gotten her married in the village 00:10:15.84\00:10:18.31 and she may be doing some manual labor in the fields. 00:10:18.35\00:10:22.05 Because of Asian Aid my sister is able to receive an education 00:10:22.08\00:10:26.22 and I want to thank the sponsor. 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.96 These are people who do not know us, 00:10:28.99\00:10:31.36 they have not met us and we have not seen them 00:10:31.39\00:10:34.53 but still they are sponsoring my sister. 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.40 I'm able to give my emotional support to her 00:10:37.43\00:10:40.24 only because of these sponsors. 00:10:40.27\00:10:42.44 I'm praying for them. 00:10:42.47\00:10:43.81 I pray that God will prosper them 00:10:43.84\00:10:46.88 and give them good health. 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.24 I thank them with all my heart. 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.91 The healing ministry 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.15 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:10:54.18\00:10:55.75 is the forefront of its mission to spread the good news 00:10:55.78\00:10:58.39 and the love of Jesus 00:10:58.42\00:10:59.75 through its clinics and hospitals. 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.02 At Gifford Memorial young people 00:11:02.06\00:11:04.03 are being trained in God's service 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.46 and at school of nursing they're not only trained 00:11:06.49\00:11:08.80 to give manual nursing care but also show Christian love 00:11:08.83\00:11:12.50 and to share God's love with those 00:11:12.53\00:11:14.27 who come seeking medical help. 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.54 When we come back we look at how Asian Aid 00:11:16.57\00:11:19.37 is helping this pioneering institution 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.68 in training young people and this healing ministry 00:11:21.71\00:11:24.41 and meet Alice and see how Asian Aid sponsorship 00:11:24.45\00:11:27.55 has helped her bring laurels to her sponsors, 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.98 her home and to her school. 00:11:30.02\00:11:32.85 I think it's a great blessing being sponsored. 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.79 I'm thankful for what they did for my life 00:11:35.82\00:11:38.99 for bringing me to this stage and I hope one day 00:11:39.03\00:11:42.00 that I would do something for them. 00:11:42.03\00:11:44.40 My wife Angela and I are here in Andhra Pradesh, India 00:12:00.62\00:12:04.02 visiting some of the Asian Aid projects to see for ourselves 00:12:04.05\00:12:07.62 how the work that is being done here is transforming lives, 00:12:07.66\00:12:10.99 especially lives of orphaned children 00:12:11.03\00:12:13.60 and abandoned children, 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.10 children from the tribal communities. 00:12:15.13\00:12:17.93 And we've discovered that because of sponsors like you 00:12:17.97\00:12:20.17 they now have a place that they can call home, 00:12:20.20\00:12:22.80 they have wonderful clothing, nutritious food 00:12:22.84\00:12:25.17 and they are being prepared 00:12:25.21\00:12:27.24 to propel themselves into the future 00:12:27.28\00:12:29.21 for a promising career. 00:12:29.24\00:12:31.28 But above all that because of sponsors like you 00:12:31.31\00:12:34.32 they now have hope, hope for a better future. 00:12:34.35\00:12:37.79 Well, I am here in Sunrise Home with Sheela. 00:12:51.73\00:12:54.64 Now my family and I have been sponsoring Sheela 00:12:54.67\00:12:57.11 for just about a year now 00:12:57.14\00:12:58.54 and I can tell you being here and spending time with her 00:12:58.57\00:13:01.64 I can see the difference 00:13:01.68\00:13:03.01 that sponsorship is making in her life. 00:13:03.04\00:13:05.28 She now has plenty of food, 00:13:05.31\00:13:06.95 she has a beautiful place to sleep each night, 00:13:06.98\00:13:09.25 she has clothes, she has a school uniform 00:13:09.28\00:13:12.02 and an excellent education. 00:13:12.05\00:13:14.06 I can tell you it's made a difference in her life 00:13:14.09\00:13:16.83 and it's made a difference in our lives too. 00:13:16.86\00:13:19.49 Now through sponsorship you too can make 00:13:19.53\00:13:22.00 a difference in the life of a child every day. 00:13:22.03\00:13:25.03 Giffard Memorial Hospital in Nuzvid 00:13:52.19\00:13:54.50 is an Adventist Hospital established in 1935 00:13:54.53\00:13:57.87 and has spearheaded in served the medical needs 00:13:57.90\00:14:00.04 of communities in and around Nuzvid. 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.80 In its 80 history the hospital has treated thousands of people 00:14:02.84\00:14:06.78 who often come from poor villages with problems 00:14:06.81\00:14:09.61 ranging from common illness to snake bites. 00:14:09.64\00:14:12.68 Along with the medical center 00:14:12.71\00:14:14.42 Giffard Memorial has also been instrumental 00:14:14.45\00:14:16.65 in taking the mission and the good news 00:14:16.69\00:14:18.92 of the church to people around Nuzvid. 00:14:18.95\00:14:21.96 Because of this hospital more than 50 churches 00:14:21.99\00:14:26.86 were established all in and around Nuzvid. 00:14:26.90\00:14:31.50 And each church is doing so good. 00:14:31.53\00:14:33.90 From those churches we get the students. 00:14:33.94\00:14:36.30 Here they are doing their general nursing program 00:14:36.34\00:14:38.07 and BSc nursing program. 00:14:38.11\00:14:39.87 We are hoping to start MSc nursing program. 00:14:39.91\00:14:42.14 That means from LKG and till PG course 00:14:42.18\00:14:46.41 they can complete their studies here. 00:14:46.45\00:14:48.32 What a blessing that would be. 00:14:48.35\00:14:51.62 Recently Giffard Memorial Hospital branched out 00:14:51.65\00:14:54.26 to start a nursing program primarily for students 00:14:54.29\00:14:56.93 from Adventist backgrounds who wish for career in nursing. 00:14:56.96\00:15:00.56 Last year the College of Nursing was privileged 00:15:00.60\00:15:03.10 to send out its first batch of graduates. 00:15:03.13\00:15:05.80 It was a proud moment for the college 00:15:05.83\00:15:08.07 as they had 100 percent passing result. 00:15:08.10\00:15:11.41 You know as a principle I founded quite challenging. 00:15:11.44\00:15:14.04 It was the first batch of students 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.84 and we had a lot of difficulties also 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.91 but the good Lord was there with us 00:15:18.95\00:15:21.08 and we put in all our efforts 00:15:21.12\00:15:23.59 to see that our students could get the best. 00:15:23.62\00:15:26.25 With God's help we got quite a few distinctions 00:15:26.29\00:15:29.86 and we had 100 percent pass results 00:15:29.89\00:15:32.23 from the first batch of students 00:15:32.26\00:15:33.90 and we were really very excited about it 00:15:33.93\00:15:35.93 and we thank God for all His blessing 00:15:35.96\00:15:38.37 and the way He has led us marvelously. 00:15:38.40\00:15:42.77 Although the majority of the students 00:15:42.80\00:15:44.37 in the College of Nursing come from Adventist families 00:15:44.41\00:15:47.38 many cannot afford a college education. 00:15:47.41\00:15:50.11 They come from small towns and villages like Usha Rani. 00:15:50.15\00:15:53.52 This is where Asian Aid plays a crucial role in providing 00:15:53.55\00:15:56.38 the means necessary for these aspiring students 00:15:56.42\00:15:59.12 through its sponsorship program. 00:15:59.15\00:16:01.39 I visited a lot of different medical facilities in the US 00:16:01.42\00:16:05.76 so it's a real privilege and very exciting for me 00:16:05.79\00:16:07.53 to come here to this hospital here in India 00:16:07.56\00:16:09.83 where students are being trained 00:16:09.86\00:16:11.23 and are being able to work and serve the community. 00:16:11.27\00:16:14.90 As a sponsorship manager in the US, 00:16:14.94\00:16:16.81 its like I see it from one angle 00:16:16.84\00:16:19.37 and you see the students as they grow and they come here 00:16:19.41\00:16:22.64 and everywhere you go it's someone 00:16:22.68\00:16:24.71 who has grown up through the Asian Aid system, 00:16:24.75\00:16:27.45 who is now serving the community as a nurse 00:16:27.48\00:16:29.88 and what a privilege and what opportunity 00:16:29.92\00:16:31.72 it is for them to serve patients 00:16:31.75\00:16:34.12 and they are vulnerable to share Jesus 00:16:34.16\00:16:35.79 with them in this life of service. 00:16:35.82\00:16:40.16 Alice Joseph joined the nursing staff 00:16:40.20\00:16:42.30 at Giffard Memorial last year. 00:16:42.33\00:16:44.20 She was part of the first batch of the graduating class 00:16:44.23\00:16:47.14 and was sponsored by Asian Aid through her nursing program. 00:16:47.17\00:16:50.47 Last year she brought laurels to the institution 00:16:50.51\00:16:53.68 by winning a gold medal at her graduation. 00:16:53.71\00:16:57.45 Like I just wanted this was like one time accomplishment 00:16:57.48\00:17:01.78 so I just wanted first mark 00:17:01.82\00:17:05.75 but I didn't think of the gold medal 00:17:05.79\00:17:07.86 and by God's grace I got it. 00:17:07.89\00:17:10.23 And one thing that made me happy for getting it for 00:17:10.26\00:17:14.93 from where I came for them a good name 00:17:14.96\00:17:17.27 that is from Sunshine and the Asian Aid. 00:17:17.30\00:17:19.53 I just felt happy for that. 00:17:19.57\00:17:21.24 Even I didn't tell my mom that I got gold medal 00:17:21.27\00:17:24.07 but first I told Beulah aunty 00:17:24.11\00:17:26.41 and I could see that smile on her face 00:17:26.44\00:17:29.04 and she was happy like at least from Sunshine one, 00:17:29.08\00:17:32.45 you're, the one who got it. 00:17:32.48\00:17:34.02 So I'm happy for that. 00:17:34.05\00:17:37.49 I was very proud. 00:17:37.52\00:17:38.95 You know, and so proud that Alice has made it 00:17:38.99\00:17:45.09 and even Ashwini the girl who is from Sunshine, 00:17:45.13\00:17:50.07 who studied with us she got a distinction. 00:17:50.10\00:17:53.00 And both these children have always excelled 00:17:53.03\00:17:57.67 in their studies right from grade one. 00:17:57.71\00:18:01.01 And to see that they kept that constantly 00:18:01.04\00:18:04.08 and tried to do their best even at the college level 00:18:04.11\00:18:08.05 it made me really proud to be, 00:18:08.08\00:18:10.72 able to be there and witness that 00:18:10.75\00:18:12.52 and be part of that celebration. 00:18:12.55\00:18:14.39 Alice grew up at Asian Aid Sunshine home in Bangalore 00:18:23.80\00:18:27.60 and she has fond memories of the place she calls home. 00:18:27.64\00:18:31.64 It's like a family over there and lots of children. 00:18:31.67\00:18:35.18 We can play around and we have-- like 00:18:35.21\00:18:39.15 we feel like we have someone beside us. 00:18:39.18\00:18:41.55 We never feel lonely 00:18:41.58\00:18:43.25 because we had all the children around us. 00:18:43.28\00:18:45.69 So I cherish those moments 00:18:45.72\00:18:47.59 because right now we don't get time 00:18:47.62\00:18:50.46 even to spend time with the children. 00:18:50.49\00:18:52.56 So I miss that one a lot. 00:18:52.59\00:18:56.46 Their mother brought Alice 00:18:56.50\00:18:57.83 and her twin sister Angela to sunshine home 00:18:57.87\00:19:00.27 when they were just five-years-old 00:19:00.30\00:19:01.90 after their father abandoned them. 00:19:01.94\00:19:05.04 The father left abandoning the family 00:19:05.07\00:19:07.81 and the mother had to become the breadwinner 00:19:07.84\00:19:12.01 and she couldn't go for a job 00:19:12.05\00:19:13.65 because she had these two little girls 00:19:13.68\00:19:16.08 and she was desperate to find a solution 00:19:16.12\00:19:20.19 and someone told her about Sunshine. 00:19:20.22\00:19:22.42 And so she came and asked 00:19:22.46\00:19:24.96 if we could take the children in 00:19:24.99\00:19:26.93 and looking at her desperate condition 00:19:26.96\00:19:30.30 we did take the children in so that she could survive. 00:19:30.33\00:19:34.74 Bringing her two girls to Sunshine was hard for her, 00:19:34.77\00:19:37.84 but she had to do it for their survival 00:19:37.87\00:19:39.71 and that of her own. 00:19:39.74\00:19:41.51 Most often in an abandoned situation 00:19:41.54\00:19:44.08 the child will not be able to get the basic requirements 00:19:44.11\00:19:47.18 such as a decent meal a day. 00:19:47.22\00:19:49.35 And in cases where the mother is unable to work 00:19:49.38\00:19:51.89 both the mother and the children 00:19:51.92\00:19:53.66 will eventually face hardship beyond their control 00:19:53.69\00:19:56.59 leading even to their death. 00:19:56.62\00:19:59.13 In Alice's case her mother had to make a sacrifice 00:19:59.16\00:20:02.20 to give her children up in a home 00:20:02.23\00:20:04.20 so that at least for children would have a future 00:20:04.23\00:20:07.00 and that she could be free to find a job just to survive. 00:20:07.04\00:20:10.27 Sunshine did give them a good future 00:20:10.31\00:20:12.91 and thanks to Asian Aid sponsorship 00:20:12.94\00:20:15.21 Alice and her sister were able to go to school 00:20:15.24\00:20:17.71 and be educated. 00:20:17.75\00:20:19.21 The love and care they received at Sunshine 00:20:19.25\00:20:21.52 has had a huge influence on them. 00:20:21.55\00:20:24.25 Basically any child that comes into our home 00:20:24.29\00:20:28.89 is one more added member to the family. 00:20:28.92\00:20:31.69 And the children bond so easily and so fast 00:20:31.73\00:20:36.67 and it's a lifelong bond and they sense 00:20:36.70\00:20:39.63 that they belong to a family it something bigger. 00:20:39.67\00:20:42.80 And I'm sure each of our children 00:20:42.84\00:20:46.21 are proud to be part of Sunshine. 00:20:46.24\00:20:50.48 The children are indeed proud to be part of Sunshine. 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.48 In fact, for a majority of them Sunshine is the only home 00:20:53.52\00:20:57.05 they've know and Alice owes her success 00:20:57.09\00:20:59.62 to becoming a nurse to Sunshine home. 00:20:59.65\00:21:02.19 First I decided I wanted to become a teacher 00:21:02.22\00:21:05.33 like when we write letters and all that was my desire. 00:21:05.36\00:21:08.36 Then as I grew up 00:21:08.40\00:21:09.93 I used to see so many of our sisters in Sunshine 00:21:09.96\00:21:13.87 like nurses with the white uniform, 00:21:13.90\00:21:16.40 giving injections and all that so I had that desire 00:21:16.44\00:21:19.77 that I should also be a nurse. 00:21:19.81\00:21:23.65 We've had about 35 girls who are nurses. 00:21:23.68\00:21:27.88 I think initially the girls who finish nursing 00:21:27.92\00:21:32.32 were role models for these girls 00:21:32.35\00:21:34.52 and everyone looked up to them 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.22 and decided they want to do exactly 00:21:36.26\00:21:38.83 what the older ones did. 00:21:38.86\00:21:41.46 And they have the ability and the opportunity 00:21:41.50\00:21:46.17 to be of service to people 00:21:46.20\00:21:48.30 and they, they enjoyed because being at Sunshine 00:21:48.34\00:21:52.24 its not just looking after themselves, 00:21:52.27\00:21:54.18 each one of them has had responsibility 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.91 of a little one to look after the little ones 00:21:56.95\00:21:59.31 and they develop leadership skills 00:21:59.35\00:22:02.95 and skills in serving others. 00:22:02.98\00:22:05.39 So that's what they like to do. 00:22:05.42\00:22:08.72 The desire to excel in her studies 00:22:08.76\00:22:10.76 and in life grew out of her experience at Sunshine 00:22:10.79\00:22:13.60 and with Asian Aids help she grabbed all the opportunity 00:22:13.63\00:22:16.80 that came her way to becoming a successful nurse. 00:22:16.83\00:22:19.90 The way the child is born is not important. 00:22:19.93\00:22:25.74 To which family the child belongs 00:22:25.77\00:22:28.14 that also is not important but the way this child studies, 00:22:28.18\00:22:33.28 the environment makes a ocean of difference 00:22:33.31\00:22:36.55 and then everybody would get the opportunities. 00:22:36.58\00:22:40.66 Some take it very easy, some take it very serious. 00:22:40.69\00:22:44.79 But in this case Miss Alice took it very seriously 00:22:44.83\00:22:48.33 and grabbed all the opportunities 00:22:48.36\00:22:50.60 and could excel in her studies 00:22:50.63\00:22:52.43 and that makes us very, very happy. 00:22:52.47\00:22:54.00 I'm sure the sponsors who have been supporting her 00:22:54.04\00:22:57.87 would be also very happy. 00:22:57.91\00:22:59.24 I'm sure the Asian Aid Australia, Asian Aid USA, 00:22:59.27\00:23:04.91 sponsors also will be very happy about it. 00:23:04.95\00:23:09.25 Alice is a shining example of why Asian Aid 00:23:09.28\00:23:12.12 wants to continue growing its program. 00:23:12.15\00:23:15.12 We're giving children a chance, 00:23:15.16\00:23:16.93 they can come from a very simple background 00:23:16.96\00:23:20.86 and we can give them a chance of the education 00:23:20.90\00:23:23.40 to the highest level. 00:23:23.43\00:23:25.13 Alice is a shining example of the success of sponsorship 00:23:25.17\00:23:29.07 from where she has come to top of her class 00:23:29.10\00:23:31.57 at Giffard Memorial Hospital. 00:23:31.61\00:23:33.44 It really encourages Asian Aid with its growth strategy 00:23:33.48\00:23:37.45 and it encourages us to tell sponsors 00:23:37.48\00:23:40.72 that we make a real difference in the life of these children. 00:23:40.75\00:23:45.12 The sponsors do make a real 00:23:45.15\00:23:46.86 difference in the lives of these children. 00:23:46.89\00:23:48.99 Being a sponsor is not easy 00:23:49.02\00:23:50.73 for the majority of Asian Aid sponsors. 00:23:50.76\00:23:53.16 It's years of sponsoring a child 00:23:53.19\00:23:55.06 from kindergarten right up to college 00:23:55.10\00:23:57.23 and seeing that the child is using that opportunity 00:23:57.27\00:24:00.04 and using that money the sponsors have sent 00:24:00.07\00:24:01.97 to the best of their ability is a rewarding experience. 00:24:02.00\00:24:06.04 And when sponsored children 00:24:06.07\00:24:07.41 like Alice excel in their studies 00:24:07.44\00:24:09.18 they vindicate the belief 00:24:09.21\00:24:10.68 the sponsors have in the sponsorship program. 00:24:10.71\00:24:14.02 Being sponsored is a privilege 00:24:14.05\00:24:16.58 because if I have to look back and see 00:24:16.62\00:24:20.02 that if I was not in Sunshine and that if I was not sponsored 00:24:20.06\00:24:24.89 I don't think I would have completed my nursing also. 00:24:24.93\00:24:27.90 Because my parents could not afford also 00:24:27.93\00:24:30.27 and I think it's a great blessing being sponsored 00:24:30.30\00:24:33.57 and I'm thankful for what they did for my life 00:24:33.60\00:24:37.27 to bringing me to this stage and I hope one day 00:24:37.31\00:24:40.31 that I would do something for them. 00:24:40.34\00:24:44.28 The ultimate goal of our school system children's homes, 00:24:44.31\00:24:47.62 in our hospitals is to spread the love of Jesus 00:24:47.65\00:24:50.35 and the promise of eternal life to people around us 00:24:50.39\00:24:53.42 and Asian Aid sponsored students like Usha Rani 00:24:53.46\00:24:56.26 and Alice are shining examples of the miracles 00:24:56.29\00:24:59.46 God has promised for His children. 00:24:59.49\00:25:01.93 They have not only accepted Jesus as their personal Savior 00:25:01.96\00:25:05.30 but are in the mission to tell others 00:25:05.33\00:25:07.27 about the promise of eternal life. 00:25:07.30\00:25:10.11 I think there is a tremendous influence 00:25:10.14\00:25:12.64 that homes like Sunshine and educational institutions 00:25:12.67\00:25:17.48 and sponsorship agencies like Asian Aid 00:25:17.51\00:25:21.12 have in directing a child's life 00:25:21.15\00:25:26.59 from what could have been to what has been has made 00:25:26.62\00:25:30.76 such a difference and I think just looking at the, 00:25:30.79\00:25:35.83 you know, the potentiality of a child 00:25:35.86\00:25:38.33 when they come here when they are small 00:25:38.37\00:25:39.70 and seeing through that potentiality 00:25:39.73\00:25:42.54 and making that a possibility, makes a world of difference. 00:25:42.57\00:25:47.28
