India is a land full of contrast, is a land 00:00:20.10\00:00:25.73 of great mystery and beauty. It's a land 00:00:25.73\00:00:29.06 of unspeakable despair. But traveling through 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.86 India one thing is for sure, it's a land filled 00:00:32.86\00:00:36.23 with people who should never be underestimated. 00:00:36.23\00:00:38.90 For the last 40 years Asian Aid has invested 00:00:40.40\00:00:43.53 in the futures of people would never been given 00:00:43.53\00:00:45.90 such a chance, and their investment has proven 00:00:45.90\00:00:49.06 infinite returns. Driven by the vision of Helen 00:00:49.06\00:00:53.23 Eager dedicated to helping those who 00:00:53.23\00:00:55.60 have the least. Asian Aid is an organization 00:00:55.60\00:00:58.43 implementing diverse development projects 00:00:58.43\00:01:00.53 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:00.53\00:01:03.06 The outreached fans from Bangladesh to 00:01:04.03\00:01:06.63 Nepal, Sri Lanka, and beyond from remote 00:01:06.63\00:01:10.40 villages and empty fields to sprawling centers 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.60 of education from nothing to the unimaginable. 00:01:13.60\00:01:17.23 Now Asian Aid decided to document the work 00:01:18.43\00:01:21.83 it has been doing all these years with a 00:01:21.83\00:01:23.63 desire to show the world what is possible, 00:01:23.63\00:01:26.36 by digging wells in remote villages for 00:01:26.36\00:01:28.83 clean drinking water, and bringing much needed 00:01:28.83\00:01:31.60 healthcare to the women of Nepal. By providing 00:01:31.60\00:01:35.13 an education for orphans, deaf and blind 00:01:35.13\00:01:37.53 children, giving them a sense of place, 00:01:37.53\00:01:39.96 a home but what we really discovered was being 00:01:39.96\00:01:43.16 given was hope. Giving hope to children, giving 00:01:43.16\00:01:47.60 hope to women, giving hope to the ones who 00:01:47.60\00:01:51.23 needed the most. This is Hope in Motion. 00:01:51.23\00:01:55.76 I saw everything, every animals and birds, 00:02:10.33\00:02:13.06 and my parents and my parents 00:02:13.06\00:02:14.90 also saw when they are outside. 00:02:14.90\00:02:16.90 My name is Usha Kumari at the age of 7 00:02:47.26\00:02:50.60 years I got brain fever and I loose my sight. 00:02:50.60\00:02:54.06 They told me, you can't get sight again. 00:02:55.36\00:02:57.86 I feel so sad, in the darkness we have to live 00:03:01.80\00:03:05.36 all the life until we die. 00:03:05.36\00:03:08.30 In my family all are normal, but I am, 00:03:12.93\00:03:16.33 have the defect that's why they feel so bad. 00:03:16.33\00:03:20.96 I only told them, I want to study like others, 00:03:21.80\00:03:25.40 don't neglect me like that I told. 00:03:25.40\00:03:28.93 In poor villages across India just like 00:03:32.13\00:03:35.00 Usha's blindness is an all too familiar kinds. 00:03:35.00\00:03:39.26 Families are uneducated and poverty stricken, 00:03:39.26\00:03:41.70 and many times inter marriages are arranged 00:03:41.70\00:03:44.46 to protect what little family assets are 00:03:44.46\00:03:46.46 available. These intermarriages 00:03:46.46\00:03:49.00 can lead to defects like blindness. 00:03:49.00\00:03:51.13 Reality is children born disabled are 00:03:52.96\00:03:56.23 unwanted burdens, because their 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.26 disabilities keep them from working and 00:03:58.26\00:04:00.50 bringing in income. For many parents they feel 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.80 like they have no other option, but to 00:04:03.80\00:04:05.86 discard their blind children. For one young 00:04:05.86\00:04:08.46 girl name Rajani, her story unfortunately 00:04:08.46\00:04:11.80 sums up the despair some are driven to. 00:04:11.80\00:04:14.40 What happened when you were small? 00:04:14.40\00:04:15.60 They tell when I was small at that time they 00:04:15.60\00:04:18.40 wanted to throw me on the train line. 00:04:18.40\00:04:22.53 Really, so what happened when she was small, 00:04:22.53\00:04:25.80 her parents wanted to because she was blind, 00:04:25.80\00:04:28.76 they wanted to throw her on the train line 00:04:28.76\00:04:31.63 she just said, but her sister loved her very 00:04:31.63\00:04:35.16 much, and when the parents went to 00:04:35.16\00:04:37.60 throw her on the train line, her sister tried 00:04:37.60\00:04:40.50 to save her, but what happened was that Rajani 00:04:40.50\00:04:45.30 was saved and her sister lost her life, so 00:04:45.30\00:04:48.03 really your sister died for you, didn't she? 00:04:48.03\00:04:50.10 Yes. Because she loved you. 00:04:50.10\00:04:51.93 My big sister loved me. 00:04:51.93\00:04:55.20 It's a hopeless paradise to be caught in the 00:04:55.93\00:04:58.26 middle of, one that should be enough to make 00:04:58.26\00:05:00.73 any rejected blind child like Rajani give up. 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.36 This is Babita, this is Laxmi, this is Sravani, 00:05:03.73\00:05:07.76 at the moment she is the littlest girl that 00:05:07.76\00:05:10.46 we have here in the blind school. 00:05:10.46\00:05:11.96 This is Shanti, and she is one of the children 00:05:12.66\00:05:16.16 here at blind school because of her 00:05:16.16\00:05:18.63 disability I guess the parents 00:05:18.63\00:05:20.90 don't really bother about her at all. 00:05:20.90\00:05:23.06 But there is an incredible resiliency 00:05:24.00\00:05:26.00 in these students, they desire to live fully, 00:05:26.00\00:05:29.10 to learn and excel, to rise above the 00:05:29.10\00:05:32.63 circumstances they were born into, 00:05:32.63\00:05:34.33 rather than be define by them. 00:05:34.33\00:05:37.30 This school is giving them that chance, 00:05:39.13\00:05:41.16 a chance for success. 00:05:41.16\00:05:42.80 We now have around 180 children in 00:05:49.46\00:05:51.93 our blind school, half of them are totally 00:05:51.93\00:05:53.90 blind approximately, and half of them have 00:05:53.90\00:05:57.36 got just, just a little sight. 00:05:57.36\00:05:59.90 At least a few are literates and it just 00:06:05.30\00:06:11.43 gives you I don't know how you 00:06:11.43\00:06:14.10 should take, it gives you a better life. 00:06:14.10\00:06:15.60 Asian Aid supports one of the premier blind 00:06:32.00\00:06:34.43 schools in all of India. Here they are given 00:06:34.43\00:06:37.16 a high standard value based education. 00:06:37.16\00:06:39.66 Learning everything from braille 00:06:42.36\00:06:43.83 to the arts, and these kids love it. 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.60 First we teach them the oral, the ABCD 00:06:53.50\00:06:56.73 alphabets, after that we teach them the six 00:06:56.73\00:06:59.33 dots, how to write in correct manner. 00:06:59.33\00:07:01.40 So everything is good in here and in class 00:07:02.40\00:07:06.26 time also teachers will tell us 00:07:06.26\00:07:07.76 lessons very nicely and clearly. 00:07:07.76\00:07:09.93 But blindness is not the only issue Asian Aid 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.40 is dealing with here. There are various cases 00:07:13.40\00:07:16.33 of acute medical care that must be addressed. 00:07:16.33\00:07:19.20 One special case is a young girl named Laxmi. 00:07:19.20\00:07:22.50 Do you like probably blind school? Yes. 00:07:23.53\00:07:26.40 Yes, you have many friends, 00:07:26.40\00:07:28.26 many sisters. So many, so many. 00:07:28.26\00:07:32.06 Laxmi has an advanced case of skin cancer, 00:07:32.06\00:07:34.76 by the time she came to Asian Aid 00:07:34.96\00:07:37.33 local doctors told her there 00:07:37.33\00:07:38.96 was nothing that could be done. 00:07:38.96\00:07:40.20 Laxmi is being in our school for the blind 00:07:40.20\00:07:42.60 children now for quiet sometime a few years, 00:07:42.60\00:07:45.30 and she is a very good girl and she is 00:07:45.30\00:07:47.70 a happy girl. Aren't you? Yes. 00:07:47.70\00:07:50.20 It's sad to say, it has now come to this 00:07:50.20\00:07:54.23 state and we feel very, very sad for her. 00:07:54.23\00:07:58.93 Asian Aid continues to look for treatment 00:08:00.96\00:08:03.16 as her condition worsens, and they are always 00:08:03.16\00:08:07.20 trying to expand and develop medical 00:08:07.20\00:08:09.16 partnerships to handle such challenges and 00:08:09.16\00:08:11.80 needs for these kids each with their own 00:08:11.80\00:08:15.33 difficult story to tell. It's never too late 00:08:15.33\00:08:18.13 to start helping them. The blind school 00:08:18.13\00:08:22.50 has been a passion project by Helen Mummy 00:08:22.50\00:08:24.90 Eager and the rest of Asian Aid for years. 00:08:24.90\00:08:27.30 They built an all inclusive campus 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.90 for them. Where these kids many 00:08:29.90\00:08:32.73 abandoned can grow and flourish. 00:08:32.73\00:08:35.06 Come little children come to me, 00:08:36.60\00:08:39.50 I will teach you ABC. 00:08:39.50\00:08:43.00 Sammy is one of the youngest boys of the 00:08:43.00\00:08:45.26 blind school, and one of the most promising. 00:08:45.26\00:08:48.10 Sammy is a good boy, so whatever we teach 00:08:48.10\00:08:50.76 he'll just keep in his mind 00:08:50.76\00:08:52.83 faster than anybody else. 00:08:52.83\00:08:54.43 Sammy proves it's never too early to give 00:08:54.43\00:08:57.50 these kids the tools they'll need to succeed. 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.06 Though he is small, he'll take part in all the 00:09:00.06\00:09:02.96 activities so what we ask him to do. 00:09:02.96\00:09:05.03 What are these? These are grapes. 00:09:05.03\00:09:08.73 Well Sammy is a special little guy, his mom 00:09:08.73\00:09:12.56 died when he was very young, and his 00:09:12.56\00:09:16.40 father remarried and there is a cultural 00:09:16.40\00:09:19.00 thing with the remarriage where sometimes 00:09:19.00\00:09:20.96 the children aren't accepted. So Sam has 00:09:20.96\00:09:24.06 come to the blind school, and he doesn't 00:09:24.06\00:09:26.90 see a lot of his family, so he is effectively 00:09:26.90\00:09:28.96 an orphan, but Sam likes the blind school 00:09:28.96\00:09:32.80 and this is now his home, and we are very 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.50 excited that Sam is an Asian Aid child. 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.93 His family, his friends, everything he has in his 00:09:38.30\00:09:42.03 whole world is right here at the blind school. 00:09:42.03\00:09:45.03 I think when he become big he may 00:09:45.03\00:09:47.00 become something in his life. 00:09:47.00\00:09:48.56 But Sammy and the other are getting more than 00:09:50.00\00:09:52.23 just the tools to build a bright future. 00:09:52.23\00:09:54.26 But Asian Aid is giving them is what they 00:09:58.30\00:09:59.83 really need, a sense of family, a home. 00:09:59.83\00:10:03.36 Sometimes they don't want to go home, and I 00:10:06.13\00:10:08.53 remember there were two little girls came 00:10:08.53\00:10:10.56 and when these two little girls came, they 00:10:10.56\00:10:13.46 were just so happy, there was plenty of food. 00:10:13.46\00:10:15.46 These kids can see better than most of us, 00:10:24.13\00:10:26.16 they can see hope, a hope that leads to the 00:10:26.16\00:10:29.50 important things in life. It goes beyond just 00:10:29.50\00:10:32.23 food and shelter, they're surrounded by 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.53 people that love them, and because of that 00:10:34.53\00:10:38.03 they have the confidence to strive for more. 00:10:38.03\00:10:40.86 I want to become a computer teacher; 00:10:41.83\00:10:44.13 if I got chances or privileges in 00:10:44.13\00:10:46.56 other countries I will go sir. 00:10:46.56\00:10:49.50 They can do more than just get around, 00:10:54.20\00:10:55.73 and they decide to show us that. One of their 00:10:55.73\00:10:58.26 favorite past time is playing cricket. 00:10:58.26\00:11:00.26 Using a ball with bells in it, they can hear 00:11:04.70\00:11:07.16 it coming. It's a pretty amazing feet showing 00:11:07.16\00:11:12.63 that there isn't much they can do. 00:11:12.63\00:11:14.80 And then you see some of them on the school 00:11:24.16\00:11:26.86 campus and you sort of expecting them to fall 00:11:26.86\00:11:30.23 over or bump into something that they 00:11:30.23\00:11:32.03 just after they have been there a while 00:11:32.03\00:11:33.70 I guess now that you walk these many 00:11:33.70\00:11:36.26 steps this way, and then you turn left 00:11:36.26\00:11:38.03 or something, I don't know how they do it. 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.80 The kids wanted to put on a show for us, 00:11:48.33\00:11:49.80 we weren't sure what to expect but right away it 00:11:49.80\00:11:53.20 became obvious that they have the same passions, 00:11:53.20\00:11:55.50 talents and abilities that any kid would 00:11:55.50\00:11:58.10 have, and they were happy to express themselves. 00:11:58.10\00:12:02.16 When darkness is everywhere Asian 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.73 Aid provides the light. A light that gives hope 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.53 to children would otherwise not only get a 00:12:15.53\00:12:17.60 chance to survive, but to thrive and contribute 00:12:17.60\00:12:22.03 in positive ways to the global community, 00:12:22.03\00:12:24.10 may be darkness is more about our state of mind. 00:12:24.10\00:12:26.96 I will never think that I am blind because 00:12:27.80\00:12:29.90 I have every thing instead of seeing 00:12:29.90\00:12:33.40 everything, we can hear anything and 00:12:33.40\00:12:35.36 we can learn and we can go anywhere. 00:12:35.36\00:12:38.43 Come little children come to me, 00:12:42.06\00:12:44.93 I will teach you ABC. 00:12:44.93\00:12:48.00 We leave here a share of that hope is alive 00:13:03.00\00:13:05.36 and well is not avoiding it was clear as they are 00:13:05.36\00:13:09.73 living we could see it with our own two eyes. 00:13:09.73\00:13:12.80 Where there is hope, there is no darkness. 00:13:15.33\00:13:17.46 This is Hope in Motion 00:13:26.76\00:13:28.80
