India is a land full of 00:00:21.13\00:00:23.96 contrasts It's a Land of great mystery and beauty 00:00:26.03\00:00:28.43 It's a land of unspeakable 00:00:29.26\00:00:31.20 despair But travelling through India, One thing is for sure 00:00:32.46\00:00:35.60 It's a land filled with people who should never be 00:00:36.13\00:00:40.00 underestimated For the last 40 00:00:41.36\00:00:42.53 years Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people 00:00:42.53\00:00:45.43 who have never been given such a 00:00:45.43\00:00:47.43 chance And their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:00:48.13\00:00:51.10 Driven by the vision of Helen 00:00:52.66\00:00:54.30 Eager, dedicated to helping those who have the least, 00:00:54.30\00:00:57.16 Asian Aid is an organization implementing diverse development 00:00:57.16\00:01:00.90 projects and sponsoring thousands of children... 00:01:01.43\00:01:04.30 Their outreach spans throughout Asia, from Bangladesh to Nepal, Sri Lanka and beyond... 00:01:05.16\00:01:10.00 From remote villages and empty fields to sprawling centers of 00:01:10.33\00:01:15.16 education... From nothing... to 00:01:15.73\00:01:18.00 the unimaginable Now, Asian Aid has decided to document the work it's been doing all these years 00:01:19.63\00:01:23.80 with a desire to show the world what is possible. 00:01:23.80\00:01:27.06 By digging wells in remote villages for clean drinking 00:01:27.06\00:01:30.40 water. And bringing much-needed healthcare to the women of Nepal 00:01:31.36\00:01:34.10 By providing an education for Orphans, Deaf and Blind children 00:01:35.00\00:01:38.76 giving them a sense of place, a 00:01:38.76\00:01:41.33 home. But what we really discovered was being given was 00:01:42.03\00:01:45.43 hope. Giving hope to children, giving hope to women, 00:01:46.03\00:01:49.50 Giving hope to the ones who 00:01:50.00\00:01:52.76 needed the most. This is Hope In 00:01:54.30\00:01:56.63 Motion. When I arrived in India, I had a lot of things on my mind 00:02:37.03\00:02:42.90 as a filmmaker. Sponsoring an orphan wasn't one of them. 00:02:42.90\00:02:46.60 My crew was stuck in the States dealing with the politics of 00:02:46.60\00:02:50.93 Indian visas. My equipment was with them, and we only had a 00:02:50.93\00:02:54.53 limited time in each place Asian Aid wanted us to visit. 00:02:54.53\00:02:58.00 At best, I would get about half the material we needed. 00:02:58.00\00:03:01.96 And at worst, the crew wouldn't make it to India before I had to return to the States. 00:03:01.96\00:03:06.93 So the last thing I expected to do was the first thing you shouldn't do as a filmmaker: 00:03:06.93\00:03:13.40 get involved. 00:03:13.40\00:03:15.73 My first day in India made my concerns seem rather small. 00:03:18.13\00:03:21.76 I found myself in one of those villages that you see on 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.50 television, you know the kind. 00:03:25.50\00:03:28.06 Children's faces moved in and out of my frame all day long. 00:03:28.06\00:03:32.40 I had seen these faces before-- distantly, on my TV or the 00:03:32.40\00:03:37.50 internet. Like everyone else, I 00:03:40.93\00:03:43.43 was insulated. In India, orphanages number in the 1,000s, 00:03:45.13\00:03:48.60 and I was about to start filming at one called the Elim Home 00:03:48.60\00:03:52.26 located on the outskirts of 00:03:52.26\00:03:55.10 Hyderabad. The kids that I was photographing at Elim seemed 00:03:56.96\00:04:00.43 well-adjusted. Stories of their parents' demise replaced by friends, meals, school and 00:04:00.43\00:04:06.23 playtime. I found myself having 00:04:06.23\00:04:09.20 fun with them. They were just 00:04:09.20\00:04:11.80 like my kids. Have you ever wondered what an orphan really 00:04:11.80\00:04:15.53 goes through when they're rescued off the street? 00:04:15.53\00:04:17.60 I wanted a chance to film the 00:04:17.60\00:04:20.56 process of a child transitioning 00:04:20.56\00:04:23.20 from life outside to life inside--the beginning. 00:04:23.20\00:04:26.26 So when Helen informed me of a new arrival, I grabbed the 00:04:26.26\00:04:30.00 camera just in time to meet a little girl named Keerthana at 00:04:30.00\00:04:33.90 the gate. Her mother had died three years ago when Keerthana 00:04:53.03\00:04:56.50 was two. Her father left for Mumbai, India to clean 00:04:57.90\00:05:01.10 commercial trucks, and he never 00:05:01.10\00:05:03.13 returned. A local pastor familiar with Keerthana's plight 00:05:04.83\00:05:08.60 took her in, planning to raise 00:05:08.60\00:05:10.70 her as his own. The plans changed, however, when Keerthana's stepmother 00:05:14.10\00:05:17.23 said they couldn't afford to 00:05:17.23\00:05:19.80 keep her. It's not uncommon for stepchildren to be abandoned 00:05:19.80\00:05:22.56 when the expenses can't be met. 00:05:22.56\00:05:25.03 So at age five, for the third time, 00:05:25.03\00:05:28.60 Keerthana was an orphan once 00:05:28.60\00:05:31.60 again. "How long do you think it will take her to transition 00:05:38.96\00:05:42.06 or to feel comfortable here?" 00:05:42.06\00:05:44.96 "It will take one week." 00:05:46.83\00:05:49.00 "Really?" 00:05:49.00\00:05:50.00 "Yes, one week to feel 00:05:50.00\00:05:52.03 comfortable because this is a new place, a new environment." 00:05:52.03\00:05:55.43 Honestly, Rueben and I didn't believe that Keerthana would 00:05:57.46\00:06:00.76 adjust to life in an orphanage in just one week. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.56 "I was like mortified. 00:06:12.50\00:06:15.60 It was the most uncomfortable, I 00:06:15.60\00:06:20.20 mean, at one point I just 00:06:20.20\00:06:23.16 stopped the camera. Then I thought, you can't stop the camera, you gotta keep going. 00:06:23.16\00:06:26.26 Rueben's looking at me as he's snapping stills 00:06:26.26\00:06:29.96 and he's--we don't wanna get too 00:06:29.96\00:06:32.96 close-- she's looking at us like, you know, aren't you gonna 00:06:32.96\00:06:36.53 do something? "When I saw her, I 00:06:40.40\00:06:43.40 remembered my life when I first 00:06:43.40\00:06:46.10 came to Elim. You know, I'm just wondering because the pastor 00:06:46.30\00:06:49.26 brought me here and he was trying to leave. And I went all 00:06:49.26\00:06:53.16 over the campus looking for the 00:06:53.16\00:06:55.36 pastor. He, like, I could see him, and there were other boys 00:06:55.36\00:07:00.06 running behind me who held me back. But it really made me 00:07:00.06\00:07:03.76 worry. I could see that here's a little girl who just came 00:07:08.10\00:07:11.16 recently and she faced the same 00:07:11.16\00:07:13.50 problem. So I admit when I saw her--the pastor leaving her and 00:07:13.50\00:07:17.13 trying to hide, trying to be away from her. It was the same experience that I felt. 00:07:17.13\00:07:22.13 I had the same experience that little girl had. 00:07:22.13\00:07:26.10 "When Keerthana was dropped off, 00:07:35.30\00:07:38.60 she wouldn't stop crying. 00:07:38.60\00:07:42.60 You could tell that it was something traumatic for her. 00:07:42.60\00:07:46.73 Days afterward, she wouldn't talk to anyone, 00:07:46.73\00:07:49.90 she wouldn't go to school, she wouldn't go to study hall. 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.73 She would just be with the cooks, cutting vegetables." 00:07:52.73\00:07:57.30 The only father figure in Keerthana's memory had just 00:08:01.33\00:08:05.50 walked away. "So here's a real 00:08:08.60\00:08:11.23 tough situation. This pastor, earning less than $20 (US) a 00:08:11.23\00:08:14.90 month, has raised this child. And he just simply cannot afford 00:08:14.90\00:08:19.20 it anymore." The first night in the orphanage was rough. 00:08:19.90\00:08:22.40 She didn't sleep well, even though the orphanage gave her a 00:08:22.40\00:08:25.33 bed. She insisted on sleeping on 00:08:25.33\00:08:27.70 the floor. It's what she was 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.73 used to. "When I gave her a bed, she was so happy. But at nighttime she was coming down. 00:08:29.73\00:08:34.03 And we made her sleep again on 00:08:34.03\00:08:37.00 the bed. She ate very little 00:08:37.00\00:08:40.50 food when she came. Then the next thing that ended up 00:08:41.50\00:08:45.53 happening was that she didn't 00:08:45.53\00:08:48.66 have a sponsor. And so all of this chatter started happening 00:08:48.66\00:08:51.70 about how was she gonna stay 00:08:51.70\00:08:54.70 here. Because, you know, she just has to have a sponsor. 00:08:54.70\00:08:57.83 There's also questions about whether or not there's space 00:08:57.83\00:09:01.80 available. "I find that maybe 00:09:03.13\00:09:06.70 the hardest thing to do is to refuse some of the children 00:09:06.70\00:09:10.46 because we don't have enough 00:09:10.46\00:09:14.43 sponsors. But we try to take all the blind, all the deaf, all the 00:09:14.43\00:09:19.63 total orphans. But of course there are a lot of other tragic 00:09:19.63\00:09:23.90 situations, as well as those." 00:09:23.90\00:09:26.86 "The bottom line is that, I 00:09:31.66\00:09:34.96 just, that night, when we went back to the hotel, 00:09:34.96\00:09:38.70 I Skyped my family and I told Rebecca, I said, 00:09:38.70\00:09:44.16 Are you ready to sponsor a 00:09:44.16\00:09:49.10 little girl? She just like started crying, she said, "well, 00:09:49.10\00:09:54.00 just bring her home. In fact, I asked Helen, I said, Helen, can 00:09:58.36\00:10:02.53 we do something? I mean, Rebecca wants me to bring her home. 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.53 I said, if I can facilitate that, you know, that's what she 00:10:05.53\00:10:09.73 wants me to do. Helen said, she said no. She said, Listen, everything will be okay. 00:10:09.73\00:10:14.96 She's actually, it's better to 00:10:14.96\00:10:18.56 have her here. Because, she said, quite honestly it's very 00:10:18.56\00:10:21.90 difficult to be, you can't adopt these kids out of here. 00:10:21.90\00:10:24.03 Everybody in India gets a free shot at an orphan, 00:10:24.03\00:10:26.96 which sets them up for all kinds of abusive situations. 00:10:27.16\00:10:30.20 I started the process of becoming Keerthana's sponsor, 00:10:33.23\00:10:36.76 but it was time for me to leave. 00:10:36.76\00:10:39.40 There were more places to film, more faces to capture. 00:10:39.40\00:10:42.30 In two weeks I would return, 00:10:42.30\00:10:45.66 but I kept thinking about 00:10:45.66\00:10:48.20 Malithih's words about Keerthana assimilating within a week. 00:10:48.20\00:10:50.83 "A week, a week and a half after she was dropped off, 00:11:22.10\00:11:24.86 she started playing with the 00:11:25.36\00:11:28.33 children, she started eating 00:11:28.33\00:11:31.16 with us. At first she ate very 00:11:31.16\00:11:33.90 little. Keerthana was still a 00:11:33.90\00:11:36.93 little bit in shock. She was, you could tell she was trying to 00:11:36.93\00:11:41.10 take everything in." With 70 kids at Elim Home, I figured Keerthana would quickly 00:11:42.20\00:11:45.70 disappear into the crowd. 00:11:45.70\00:11:48.00 By the time I returned, the rest of my film crew had 00:11:50.00\00:11:52.96 caught up with me in India. 00:11:52.96\00:11:55.46 They brought with them school supplies, some clothes, and 00:11:55.46\00:11:58.63 gifts that Rebecca and the kids had put together back in the 00:11:58.63\00:12:01.96 States. Given the high level of emotion surrrounding Keerthana 00:12:03.96\00:12:06.90 when I left I wasn't expecting much of a positive outcome. 00:12:06.90\00:12:10.06 I was wrong. 00:12:10.06\00:12:12.00 "When she came first, I used to get after her, 00:12:22.73\00:12:26.10 but now she's after me and after all the kids. 00:12:26.10\00:12:29.50 She's very playful, and she says now she's very happy to be at 00:12:29.50\00:12:34.50 Elim." "She truly has settled in. She's settled in to school, 00:12:35.76\00:12:38.30 and, you know, I've spent some time with her, 00:12:38.30\00:12:42.90 I got her introduced to my family on Skype. 00:12:42.90\00:12:45.63 And I'm looking forward to-- and so is my family-- 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.23 to that day that investment pays 00:12:48.23\00:12:51.86 off. It's already paying off now, but I look forward to that 00:12:51.86\00:12:55.50 day when she finishes her degree, whatever it is that she 00:12:55.50\00:12:59.80 wants to do, and that she's able to take her rightful place in 00:12:59.80\00:13:04.26 society. And she's gonna be able to live a principled life. 00:13:04.26\00:13:07.60 I think it's great." 00:13:08.33\00:13:10.30 I realize every orphan success story starts here. 00:13:16.40\00:13:19.83 They're dropped off. 00:13:19.83\00:13:21.83 And all they need is someone to take them in, 00:13:21.83\00:13:24.73 someone to believe in them, 00:13:24.73\00:13:26.73 someone to give them hope. 00:13:26.73\00:13:29.73
