In this episode of Hope In Motion, 00:00:03.08\00:00:06.57 Jim Rennie CEO for Asian Aid USA, 00:00:06.60\00:00:09.79 looks back on the past year and remembers the moments 00:00:09.82\00:00:12.73 and the faces that gave him hope. 00:00:12.76\00:00:15.41 I was excited to go and meet Jyothi 00:00:15.44\00:00:18.06 and to see how she had learned tailoring 00:00:18.09\00:00:20.39 and how this class had made a real difference 00:00:20.42\00:00:23.33 for her and her family both for learning this skill 00:00:23.36\00:00:26.48 to provide for her family and for her income. 00:00:26.51\00:00:30.18 And a 15-year-old girl faces unimaginable trauma 00:00:30.21\00:00:34.01 at the hands of sex traffickers. 00:00:34.04\00:00:38.82 I was told until I earned the money back 00:00:38.85\00:00:40.96 I wasn't allowed to leave. 00:00:40.99\00:00:42.86 I cried for days, I wanted to runaway 00:00:42.89\00:00:45.90 but there was security all around. 00:00:45.93\00:00:48.93 When we took her to the government home 00:00:48.96\00:00:51.34 she discovered that she was HIV positive and pregnant, 00:00:51.37\00:00:55.53 three months pregnant the same day. 00:00:55.56\00:00:57.80 Stay tuned for the dramatic season finale of Hope In Motion. 00:00:57.83\00:01:02.06 India is a land full of contrast. 00:01:12.56\00:01:17.34 It's a land of great mystery and beauty. 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.79 It's a land of unspeakable despair. 00:01:20.82\00:01:24.24 By traveling through India one thing is for sure, 00:01:24.27\00:01:27.60 it's a land filled with people 00:01:27.63\00:01:29.22 who should never be underestimated. 00:01:29.25\00:01:32.78 For the last 40 years 00:01:32.81\00:01:34.36 Asian Aid has invested in the futures of people 00:01:34.39\00:01:37.21 who had never been given such a chance 00:01:37.24\00:01:39.49 and their investment has proven infinite returns. 00:01:39.52\00:01:44.10 Driven by the vision of Helen Eager 00:01:44.13\00:01:46.23 dedicated to helping those who have the least, 00:01:46.26\00:01:49.03 Asian Aid is an organization 00:01:49.06\00:01:50.67 implementing diverse development projects 00:01:50.70\00:01:53.03 and sponsoring thousands of children. 00:01:53.06\00:01:56.44 Their outreach spans from Bangladesh to Nepal, 00:01:56.47\00:01:59.44 Sri Lanka and beyond from remote villages 00:01:59.47\00:02:03.16 in empty fields to sprawling centers of education 00:02:03.19\00:02:07.11 from nothing to the unimaginable. 00:02:07.14\00:02:10.92 Now, Asian Aid decided to document 00:02:10.95\00:02:13.54 the work it has been doing all these years 00:02:13.57\00:02:15.53 with the desire to show the world 00:02:15.56\00:02:17.52 what is possible by digging wells 00:02:17.55\00:02:19.88 in remote villages for clean drinking water 00:02:19.91\00:02:22.71 and bringing much needed healthcare 00:02:22.74\00:02:24.26 to the woman of Nepal, 00:02:24.29\00:02:26.73 by providing an education for orphans, 00:02:26.76\00:02:28.72 deaf, and blind children, 00:02:28.75\00:02:30.67 giving them a sense of place, a home. 00:02:30.70\00:02:33.46 But what we really discovered was being given was hope. 00:02:33.49\00:02:37.27 Giving hope to children, giving hope to women, 00:02:37.30\00:02:41.79 giving hope to the ones who needed the most, 00:02:41.82\00:02:45.71 this is Hope In Motion. 00:02:45.74\00:02:47.83 For the past four years 00:03:06.25\00:03:07.98 Jin Rennie has been serving the people of India and Nepal 00:03:08.01\00:03:10.81 as the CEO for Asian Aid USA. 00:03:10.84\00:03:14.02 Originally from Christ Church New Zealand, 00:03:14.05\00:03:16.41 Jim is currently living in the United States 00:03:16.44\00:03:18.63 but he travels back and forth to India several times a year. 00:03:18.66\00:03:22.56 He is come to know first hand the faces 00:03:22.59\00:03:24.77 and personal stories of the people 00:03:24.80\00:03:26.29 you've met through this series. 00:03:26.32\00:03:28.81 Back in 2010 Asian Aid made a decision 00:03:28.84\00:03:32.39 that it should share the word that it is done 00:03:32.42\00:03:34.95 in South East Asia, especially India. 00:03:34.98\00:03:38.10 Asian Aid has helped thousands and thousands of children 00:03:38.13\00:03:41.85 through sponsorship. 00:03:41.88\00:03:43.30 It is help a blind and the deaf 00:03:43.33\00:03:45.36 and has supported many orphanages. 00:03:45.39\00:03:47.88 This series was to show 00:03:47.91\00:03:49.92 how Asian Aid has given so many children 00:03:49.95\00:03:52.75 and so many communities real hope. 00:03:52.78\00:03:56.07 Through our Hope In Motion series 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.09 we have been able to share with you 00:03:58.12\00:04:00.17 how Asian Aid over the years 00:04:00.20\00:04:02.20 is empowering women in some of the tribal villages 00:04:02.23\00:04:05.72 of Andhra Pradesh. 00:04:05.75\00:04:07.32 We are teaching them how to do business 00:04:07.35\00:04:09.73 and coaching them in schools like tailoring 00:04:09.76\00:04:12.70 and giving them a dignified livelihood 00:04:12.73\00:04:15.28 so they can really take care of their families. 00:04:15.31\00:04:18.18 We saw Jyothi narrate her story of hope 00:04:18.21\00:04:21.70 because she was able to attend tailoring classes 00:04:21.73\00:04:25.06 and the dream she has for her family. 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.84 Just a couple of months ago 00:04:27.87\00:04:29.28 I was excited to go and meet Jyothi 00:04:29.31\00:04:31.98 and to see how she had learned tailoring 00:04:32.01\00:04:34.32 and how this class had made a real difference 00:04:34.35\00:04:37.21 for her and her family both by learning this skill 00:04:37.24\00:04:40.35 to provide for her family and for income. 00:04:40.38\00:04:44.42 We saw stories coming out of our deaf school in Kollegal, 00:04:44.45\00:04:47.94 where one of our first students from the school 00:04:47.97\00:04:50.56 is now working in a good job 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.93 and is supporting his parents and disable sister. 00:04:52.96\00:04:56.43 We also met Pradeep 00:04:56.46\00:04:58.24 who were struggling with sign language 00:04:58.27\00:05:00.57 when he arrived at the school. 00:05:00.60\00:05:02.40 But the school, the staff 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.14 and the students made him really feel at home. 00:05:04.17\00:05:07.29 Staff like Shiny and her husband Jacob 00:05:07.32\00:05:10.16 are making a real difference. 00:05:10.19\00:05:13.04 We get love it's-- money just comes and goes. 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.24 It comes today it goes tomorrow 00:05:16.27\00:05:17.55 but hundred students love, 00:05:17.58\00:05:20.36 you won't earn it in your lifetime. 00:05:20.39\00:05:22.36 Volunteers are an integral part 00:05:22.39\00:05:24.34 of our project work with Asian Aid. 00:05:24.37\00:05:26.71 In the beginning of the last academic year 00:05:26.74\00:05:28.91 we had a young group called, Heart Slide group 00:05:28.94\00:05:31.43 come from United States 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.33 and spend sometime with the children at our school 00:05:33.36\00:05:35.75 for the blind in Bobbili. 00:05:35.78\00:05:37.83 It was a huge placing both of the blind children 00:05:37.86\00:05:41.24 and the volunteers. 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.04 Bye, Sam. Bye, bye. 00:05:44.07\00:05:46.46 Bye, bye. Bye, bye. 00:05:46.49\00:05:48.54 We miss you. Miss you, bye. 00:05:48.57\00:05:52.09 In the fourth episode we met Sue Smith an Asian Aid supporter 00:05:52.12\00:05:56.53 who along with her church members 00:05:56.56\00:05:58.69 is doing their best to make the school of Vizianagaram 00:05:58.72\00:06:02.01 a better place for their children. 00:06:02.04\00:06:04.08 One of the schools that we are really proud of 00:06:11.16\00:06:13.34 is the Emmanuel Adventist School at Jaipur. 00:06:13.37\00:06:16.59 This school was a team effort from the start 00:06:16.62\00:06:18.93 that had the vision of Helen Eager her founder 00:06:18.96\00:06:22.23 with support of Garwin McNeilus from the USA 00:06:22.26\00:06:25.71 and the building was built Maranatha. 00:06:25.74\00:06:28.34 This school caters to the tribal areas in Jaipur, 00:06:28.37\00:06:32.23 including the bonded tribe. 00:06:32.26\00:06:35.82 We also saw had God's prediction was at Jaipur 00:06:35.85\00:06:39.62 during the riots that occurred. 00:06:39.65\00:06:42.88 I think sometimes God allows 00:06:42.91\00:06:45.49 certain things to happen for good. 00:06:45.52\00:06:48.28 One of things that really makes me happy 00:06:48.31\00:06:50.81 is when I see Asian Aid children 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.20 after finishing their education come back and work for us, 00:06:53.23\00:06:57.83 work for one of the many schools 00:06:57.86\00:07:00.28 where we have children. 00:07:00.31\00:07:02.28 In our episode give we saw exactly that. 00:07:02.31\00:07:07.42 When I was born I born like a sighted person, 00:07:07.45\00:07:12.07 when I have three years that time 00:07:12.10\00:07:14.48 I loosed my eyes because of eye cancer. 00:07:14.51\00:07:17.59 Some of the most despairing stories 00:07:17.62\00:07:19.84 come from the school for the blind here in Bobbili. 00:07:19.87\00:07:23.47 We witness the tragic story of Shankar, 00:07:23.50\00:07:26.56 who lost both eyes because of cancer. 00:07:26.59\00:07:29.54 It is amazing to see how he has lifted himself up 00:07:29.57\00:07:33.12 and has a courageous outlook in life. 00:07:33.15\00:07:36.29 This is only possible again 00:07:36.32\00:07:38.64 because of the good leadership of the staff 00:07:38.67\00:07:40.82 at the Bobbili blind school 00:07:40.85\00:07:42.68 who go beyond the call of duty 00:07:42.71\00:07:44.86 to make this place comfortable for children like Prince. 00:07:44.89\00:07:50.31 The-- whatever Christ has done on this earth, 00:07:50.34\00:07:53.25 we the teachers have taken it up as a challenge 00:07:53.28\00:07:56.39 to do our small little part. 00:07:56.42\00:07:58.68 This past year our major project 00:07:58.71\00:08:00.77 has been the building of the new home 00:08:00.80\00:08:03.21 for the Sunrise children in Bobbili. 00:08:03.24\00:08:06.72 For a longtime they had to put out 00:08:06.75\00:08:08.45 with the pooling conditions 00:08:08.48\00:08:10.28 which they all took on their stride. 00:08:10.31\00:08:12.55 But they deserve something better. 00:08:12.58\00:08:15.02 We are happy to provide a home 00:08:15.05\00:08:16.55 for someone like Hannah and Joshua. 00:08:16.58\00:08:19.56 It is also exciting for us 00:08:19.59\00:08:21.24 when these children take a stand for Jesus 00:08:21.27\00:08:24.55 and want to be baptized. 00:08:24.58\00:08:26.62 Last year I was privileged to be a part of the baptism service 00:08:26.65\00:08:30.66 with 30 of our children from Sunrise Home to baptism. 00:08:30.69\00:08:36.47 Who can forget the story of Keerthana. 00:08:36.50\00:08:38.89 We were at the home when she arrived. 00:08:38.92\00:08:41.32 We saw the tears and the pain, and we heard out that's-- 00:08:41.35\00:08:45.01 that she would last no more than a week. 00:08:45.04\00:08:47.91 But within a week she was a completely different person. 00:08:47.94\00:08:51.16 She was happy and smiling 00:08:51.19\00:08:53.06 and recently our visit at Elim home 00:08:53.09\00:08:55.50 and saw the difference that has been made. 00:08:55.53\00:08:58.14 It's so exciting to see the difference 00:08:58.17\00:09:00.66 what sponsorship is making with these children. 00:09:00.69\00:09:04.51 A large part of our success goes to our field workers 00:09:04.54\00:09:08.49 who carry out an important job 00:09:08.52\00:09:10.64 and check to see if Asian Aid children 00:09:10.67\00:09:13.12 are well and taken care of in their respective schools. 00:09:13.15\00:09:17.54 Some of our filed workers have to travel long distances 00:09:17.57\00:09:20.95 to check on a school. 00:09:20.98\00:09:22.71 We are so thankful for the work they do. 00:09:22.74\00:09:25.02 Asian Aids work in India began at Sunshine Home. 00:09:30.36\00:09:34.12 Beulah Fernandez has given many years of service 00:09:34.15\00:09:37.34 to the hundreds of children 00:09:37.37\00:09:39.13 who have come through Sunshine Home 00:09:39.16\00:09:41.29 and gone on the greater things. 00:09:41.32\00:09:43.31 Her patience and her love for the children 00:09:43.34\00:09:45.88 not only reflects that the strong Christian ethic 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.23 but also reflects the work that Asian Aid is committed to. 00:09:49.26\00:09:52.94 It's encouraging to look back on the difference 00:10:17.57\00:10:19.81 Asian Aid has made to the love and support of their donors. 00:10:19.84\00:10:23.03 But looking forward there is still more work to be done. 00:10:23.06\00:10:26.13 I was told until I earned the money back 00:10:29.53\00:10:31.57 I wasn't allowed to leave. 00:10:31.60\00:10:33.02 Covers are right here. 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.71 I love you. Happy day in school. 00:10:42.74\00:10:44.97 Bye. Bye. 00:10:45.00\00:10:47.53 See to night. 00:10:47.56\00:10:48.59 Give my love to Meena. 00:10:48.62\00:10:49.68 I will. 00:10:49.71\00:10:50.82 You can make a big difference every morning. 00:11:20.95\00:11:23.59 Sponsor a child with Asian Aid. 00:11:23.62\00:11:26.06 I'm here today in Andhra Pradesh, India, 00:11:44.84\00:11:46.96 at the Vizianagaram school with my friend Adarsh. 00:11:46.99\00:11:49.63 Seven years old and my family, myself sponsored him. 00:11:49.66\00:11:53.76 Everyday he's able to accommodation, 00:11:53.79\00:11:55.85 food, clothes and a good education. 00:11:55.88\00:11:59.40 We want you to know what a blessing this is 00:11:59.43\00:12:01.14 and that you too can make the difference 00:12:01.17\00:12:03.34 in the life of a child everyday through sponsorship. 00:12:03.37\00:12:06.28 Asian Aid's primary focus 00:12:24.20\00:12:25.89 is always been providing education to poor 00:12:25.92\00:12:28.27 and needy children through its sponsorship program. 00:12:28.30\00:12:31.34 Especially children from tribal areas, orphans, 00:12:31.37\00:12:34.71 blind and the speech and hearing impaired. 00:12:34.74\00:12:37.50 In doing so Asian Aid was confronted 00:12:37.53\00:12:39.62 with many other pressing issues. 00:12:39.65\00:12:42.26 One of those issues being human trafficking. 00:12:42.29\00:12:45.69 It's estimated that human trafficking 00:12:45.72\00:12:47.85 is a 32 billion dollar industry worldwide, with Nepal 00:12:47.88\00:12:52.20 and India being amongst the biggest contributors. 00:12:52.23\00:12:55.51 Although women and girls are the most affected 00:12:55.54\00:12:58.17 boys and men are also subjected to force to labor 00:12:58.20\00:13:00.83 and sexual exploitation. 00:13:00.86\00:13:03.42 In 2010 Asian Aid partner 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.66 with nonprofit organization called Oasis. 00:13:05.69\00:13:08.74 Works men in government agencies in Nepal and India 00:13:08.77\00:13:11.46 to rescue girls who have been trafficked 00:13:11.49\00:13:13.68 and they also work with communities 00:13:13.71\00:13:15.16 to prevent trafficking from happening. 00:13:15.19\00:13:17.18 And they also work with communities 00:13:17.21\00:13:18.68 to prevent trafficking from happening. 00:13:18.71\00:13:21.21 We've been working with the Oasis India 00:13:21.24\00:13:23.16 for two years now, 00:13:23.19\00:13:24.48 on Anti Human Trafficking Program. 00:13:24.51\00:13:28.24 The reason we work with Oasis India is 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.75 because we believe in the mission 00:13:30.78\00:13:33.82 of what they are doing, 00:13:33.85\00:13:34.88 they are impairing young people 00:13:34.91\00:13:36.80 to have opportunities that have been taken away from them. 00:13:36.83\00:13:40.40 So they're-- they're restoring those opportunities. 00:13:40.43\00:13:42.33 So Asian Aid is very proud to be in a partnership with Oasis. 00:13:42.36\00:13:48.32 Anita Kanaiya is the associate executive director for Oasis 00:13:48.35\00:13:52.13 and has been with the organization 00:13:52.16\00:13:53.64 for the past several years. 00:13:53.67\00:13:56.60 Asian Aid is funding a lot of our prevention based work 00:13:56.63\00:14:00.85 which we do in local communities here 00:14:00.88\00:14:03.57 as the girls are vulnerable, very vulnerable over here. 00:14:03.60\00:14:07.23 They also fund our rescues. 00:14:07.26\00:14:09.78 So yes, they're very, very happy to have met Asian Aid 00:14:09.81\00:14:13.35 and to partner with them in this work. 00:14:13.38\00:14:17.43 Anita works with a team of dedicated staff 00:14:17.46\00:14:20.02 who conduct dangerous undercover operations to rescue girls 00:14:20.05\00:14:23.48 who've either been kidnapped 00:14:23.51\00:14:24.70 or coerced into slave like conditions. 00:14:24.73\00:14:28.03 There is a lot of nexus between the traffickers 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.92 and the underworld 00:14:30.95\00:14:32.65 and sometimes its law enforcement 00:14:32.68\00:14:35.08 as well that supports these traffickers 00:14:35.11\00:14:37.04 because there's a lot of money. 00:14:37.07\00:14:39.04 We have on many occasions been chased 00:14:39.07\00:14:42.88 or followed as we return from raids or rescues 00:14:42.91\00:14:46.26 because the police don't accompany us 00:14:46.29\00:14:49.19 when we finish the raid or rescue. 00:14:49.22\00:14:51.34 They are there before it but not after. 00:14:51.37\00:14:53.70 So we have been followed, 00:14:53.73\00:14:55.23 we have received threatening phone calls, 00:14:55.26\00:14:58.13 we have been aggressively stopped 00:14:58.16\00:15:01.42 from entering into establishments 00:15:01.45\00:15:03.15 where girls are being hidden. 00:15:03.18\00:15:06.17 Geetha Prabhu is a social worker from Oasis 00:15:06.20\00:15:08.98 and is regularly involved 00:15:09.01\00:15:10.31 in these dangerous rescue missions. 00:15:10.34\00:15:12.89 As a result she often gets to know the victims 00:15:12.92\00:15:15.20 of human trafficking first hands. 00:15:15.23\00:15:17.41 There are so many girls are left vulnerable 00:15:17.44\00:15:19.02 and my heart is there for them, 00:15:19.05\00:15:20.60 that I should do much more for them and that-- 00:15:20.63\00:15:23.45 they should come out of that vulnerability 00:15:23.48\00:15:24.81 and they should realize even they can stand on their feet 00:15:24.84\00:15:27.34 and they can lead their life. 00:15:27.37\00:15:30.30 With booming economy 00:15:30.33\00:15:31.70 and growing population in Indian cities 00:15:31.73\00:15:34.40 human trafficking has been on the rise 00:15:34.43\00:15:36.22 in the red-light districts and beyond. 00:15:36.25\00:15:38.44 In recent years the average age of girls 00:15:38.47\00:15:40.85 being trafficked has gotten even younger. 00:15:40.88\00:15:44.69 Well, the age group is getting younger now, 00:15:44.72\00:15:47.64 so I think when I first started work about 00:15:47.67\00:15:49.71 seven or eight years ago 00:15:49.74\00:15:50.77 the average age of girls being trafficked was around 17, 18 00:15:50.80\00:15:56.81 but now we have cases of eight and nine year olds. 00:15:56.84\00:16:00.59 So I would say the average age 00:16:00.62\00:16:01.79 has lowered to above 12 to 15 now 00:16:01.82\00:16:04.65 of girls being trafficked. 00:16:04.68\00:16:05.88 I think the demand is more for younger girls. 00:16:05.91\00:16:09.04 Younger girls are easier prey for traffickers. 00:16:09.07\00:16:12.00 Not really understanding the outside world 00:16:12.03\00:16:13.98 makes them even more vulnerable in many ways. 00:16:14.01\00:16:17.12 The majority of victims come from low income background 00:16:17.15\00:16:19.77 with little or no education. 00:16:19.80\00:16:22.10 Many of them are lured with the promise 00:16:22.13\00:16:23.89 of getting a better job or chance to go to school. 00:16:23.92\00:16:27.20 My name is Sushila. 00:16:32.04\00:16:33.79 I'm a seamstress, I'm 20 years old. 00:16:33.82\00:16:37.24 I was 15 years old and was in seventh grade 00:16:37.27\00:16:40.68 when my parents married me off. 00:16:40.71\00:16:43.17 The Sushila story is like many of the others 00:16:43.20\00:16:45.81 that we found at that time. 00:16:45.84\00:16:50.18 She from a village the Kohler district 00:16:50.21\00:16:53.69 in Kohler district. 00:16:53.72\00:16:56.09 Her parents tried to marry her off 00:16:56.12\00:16:58.65 as a child bride. 00:16:58.68\00:17:00.02 So she wasn't 15 years 00:17:00.05\00:17:01.89 when her parents try to get her married 00:17:01.92\00:17:04.02 and they married her and she runaway from there, 00:17:04.05\00:17:08.06 from her husband's place and came back home 00:17:08.09\00:17:10.74 and they married her off again 00:17:10.77\00:17:12.61 and the second time to another person. 00:17:12.64\00:17:15.60 And she ran back the second time. 00:17:15.63\00:17:18.38 And she was very interested in study 00:17:18.41\00:17:20.19 so she was good a student in the local school 00:17:20.22\00:17:22.77 but they wouldn't have that and the third time 00:17:22.80\00:17:25.67 when they were trying to get her married is when her-- 00:17:25.70\00:17:29.15 a friend from the village told her about a job here 00:17:29.18\00:17:33.29 and that you know she was working 00:17:33.32\00:17:34.71 in the garment industry in Bangalore 00:17:34.74\00:17:36.39 and that she would help her to find a job. 00:17:36.42\00:17:38.55 We decided to runaway from the village 00:17:44.02\00:17:45.89 to either work or study. 00:17:45.92\00:17:47.91 When we were at the bus stop a lady befriended us. 00:17:47.94\00:17:51.11 She said, she would give us work in the city 00:17:51.14\00:17:53.50 and she would take us to Bangalore 00:17:53.53\00:17:55.64 but we refused her offer. 00:17:55.67\00:17:57.74 We were about to leave from there 00:17:57.77\00:17:59.81 when she laid her hands on her shoulders 00:17:59.84\00:18:02.63 we don't know what happened. 00:18:02.66\00:18:04.37 We started following her. 00:18:04.40\00:18:05.71 It was like she hypnotized us. 00:18:05.74\00:18:08.45 She took us to a hotel and gave us cool drinks. 00:18:08.48\00:18:11.87 The drinks were spiked 00:18:11.90\00:18:13.56 and we felt all of our senses going numb. 00:18:13.59\00:18:16.57 We were in a bus and that's all I remember. 00:18:16.60\00:18:19.48 The next thing I know we were in Mumbai. 00:18:19.51\00:18:23.62 There was a period of time 00:18:23.65\00:18:24.69 when almost all the girls who are rescued would say, 00:18:24.72\00:18:28.06 we came looking for a job 00:18:28.09\00:18:29.44 we met this lady in the bus stand. 00:18:29.47\00:18:31.47 She offered us the drink 00:18:31.50\00:18:32.90 and we don't remember anything else 00:18:32.93\00:18:34.35 we've turned up in Mumbai. 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.48 So many of them would have the same story. 00:18:36.51\00:18:39.28 Sushila had been sold to a pimp 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.18 in the red-light districts of Mumbai 00:18:41.21\00:18:43.05 for hundred and fifty thousand rupees, or about $3000. 00:18:43.08\00:18:47.37 I was told until I earned the money back 00:18:50.39\00:18:52.07 I wasn't allowed to leave. 00:18:52.10\00:18:54.08 I cried for days. 00:18:54.11\00:18:55.72 I wanted to run but there was security all around. 00:18:55.75\00:18:59.00 I was in that place for 11 months. 00:18:59.03\00:19:03.03 We had no outside communication. 00:19:03.06\00:19:05.67 There were many girls like me about 50 of them 00:19:05.70\00:19:08.81 and some were much younger than I was. 00:19:08.84\00:19:12.67 When these village girls are first taken 00:19:12.70\00:19:14.60 to these places they're literally broken. 00:19:14.63\00:19:16.76 Their-- their whole psyche is broken by pimps 00:19:16.79\00:19:22.21 and they take a long time to recover 00:19:22.24\00:19:24.38 from something like that. 00:19:24.41\00:19:25.44 They're abused, they're whipped, they're beaten, 00:19:25.47\00:19:27.59 they're bitten and you know the kind of things 00:19:27.62\00:19:30.54 that they go through there. 00:19:30.57\00:19:32.17 They are not feed properly so 00:19:32.20\00:19:34.12 many of them you'll see malnutrition, 00:19:34.15\00:19:37.27 very bad dental hygiene. 00:19:37.30\00:19:39.60 You know, all of these-- they have-- 00:19:39.63\00:19:40.93 they suffer with the lot of health issues 00:19:40.96\00:19:42.78 but a lot of physiological traumatic issues as well. 00:19:42.81\00:19:47.30 Sushila was subjected to sexual 00:19:47.33\00:19:49.30 and physical abused for nearly a year. 00:19:49.33\00:19:54.57 I tried been there for 11 months 00:19:54.60\00:19:56.22 and a man from Bangalore came to me as a client. 00:19:56.25\00:19:59.63 When he came into my room he told us 00:19:59.66\00:20:01.48 who he really was and we begged him to help us. 00:20:01.51\00:20:05.16 He had hidden a mobile phone with him 00:20:05.19\00:20:07.19 and he handed it over to me and my friend 00:20:07.22\00:20:09.02 so we could call the police. 00:20:09.05\00:20:11.88 She was rescued when we went on an operation 00:20:11.91\00:20:14.31 to rescue somebody else and she happened to be 00:20:14.34\00:20:17.87 in that brothel and pleaded with us 00:20:17.90\00:20:19.72 to take her out and she was brought out. 00:20:19.75\00:20:24.06 When we took her to the government home, 00:20:24.09\00:20:26.38 she discovered that she was HIV positive and pregnant, 00:20:26.41\00:20:30.59 three months pregnant the same day. 00:20:30.62\00:20:33.41 When I was first heard about it, I thought I was going to die. 00:20:33.44\00:20:36.47 I didn't have that information about AIDS at the time 00:20:36.50\00:20:39.71 and I didn't want to live. 00:20:39.74\00:20:41.64 But the people in the rehabilitation center 00:20:41.67\00:20:43.57 counseled me not to take drastic steps. 00:20:43.60\00:20:45.91 Once a victim has been rescued 00:20:51.28\00:20:53.23 they face an onslaught of challenges 00:20:53.26\00:20:55.16 to regain their footing. 00:20:55.19\00:20:56.97 Victims of human trafficking are more likely to develop 00:20:57.00\00:20:59.82 post traumatic stress disorder, 00:20:59.85\00:21:01.48 drug addictions, depression 00:21:01.51\00:21:03.08 and sexually transmitted diseases. 00:21:03.11\00:21:06.67 Once the girl has been raped or spoiled 00:21:06.70\00:21:09.31 or has indulged in any kind of a sexual contact 00:21:09.34\00:21:14.00 then she is known as a spoiled good 00:21:14.03\00:21:17.55 and the traffickers are using that. 00:21:17.58\00:21:20.10 They rape some of the girls and then because, 00:21:20.13\00:21:23.16 you know, the parents don't want to show it, 00:21:23.19\00:21:25.31 the girl won't come out of it she is, 00:21:25.34\00:21:27.80 you know spoiled good then they come 00:21:27.83\00:21:30.18 and offer something to the parents 00:21:30.21\00:21:33.71 who any way want to get rid of the girl 00:21:33.74\00:21:35.14 because it's so shameful that this happened 00:21:35.17\00:21:37.84 and they send her away. 00:21:37.87\00:21:38.94 So virginity and the importance 00:21:38.97\00:21:41.61 that the Indian culture has placed on it 00:21:41.64\00:21:43.80 has also placed a huge burden on the Indian girls 00:21:43.83\00:21:50.20 in terms of what happens to them and how they come out of it. 00:21:50.23\00:21:54.21 Feeling as if they have no other options 00:21:54.24\00:21:56.73 some women return to sex work or resort to suicide. 00:21:56.76\00:22:01.99 This is where Asian Aid and Oasis worked together 00:22:02.02\00:22:04.55 to provide the necessary medical care 00:22:04.58\00:22:06.71 as well as counseling services. 00:22:06.74\00:22:09.36 In addition they teach the women a trade, 00:22:09.39\00:22:11.19 such a sewing which gives them 00:22:11.22\00:22:13.04 an ultimate way of making money. 00:22:13.07\00:22:15.22 We are focused on creating communities 00:22:15.25\00:22:18.67 that will ensure that there is trust 00:22:18.70\00:22:21.76 and there is cohesion 00:22:21.79\00:22:23.17 and that people are loved and accepted 00:22:23.20\00:22:25.25 and that they have a support group 00:22:25.28\00:22:28.05 when they come out of situations like trafficking. 00:22:28.08\00:22:33.06 Sushila was put on retroviral drugs 00:22:33.09\00:22:35.05 to treat her HIV. 00:22:35.08\00:22:36.59 And although it's been over five years 00:22:36.62\00:22:38.15 since her ordeal in Mumbai, 00:22:38.18\00:22:39.85 she continues to go on with her life. 00:22:39.88\00:22:42.69 She attended tailoring classes 00:22:42.72\00:22:44.20 and is now earning a living as seamstress. 00:22:44.23\00:22:48.18 It's not only the Sushila's case 00:22:48.21\00:22:49.83 that we have seen today and we've gone through 00:22:49.86\00:22:52.41 its like thousands of girls like Sushila. 00:22:52.44\00:22:54.65 Girls are very vulnerable, they don't have help 00:22:54.68\00:22:57.25 and we are trying to reach out. 00:22:57.28\00:22:58.31 Like-- I don't know that I can reach out for thousands of girls 00:22:58.34\00:23:01.09 but at least in a year I'm sure that I have reached 00:23:01.12\00:23:04.34 on 300 girls in a year. 00:23:04.37\00:23:07.09 I'll make sure that 300 girls 00:23:07.12\00:23:08.54 I will but sill I'm not satisfied. 00:23:08.57\00:23:11.22 Asian Aid continues to help children 00:23:11.25\00:23:13.13 through sponsorship while also expanding 00:23:13.16\00:23:15.51 their reached to help end human trafficking 00:23:15.54\00:23:17.85 in India and Nepal. 00:23:17.88\00:23:20.67 It is their dream that you too will join them 00:23:20.70\00:23:22.98 and putting Hope In Motion. 00:23:23.01\00:23:24.77 For over 40 years Asian Aid is an organization 00:24:03.26\00:24:06.97 giving hope to so many. 00:24:07.00\00:24:09.22 Their outreach spans from India and Bangladesh 00:24:09.25\00:24:12.16 through Nepal and beyond, 00:24:12.19\00:24:14.85 from remote villages and empty fields 00:24:14.88\00:24:18.73 to sprawling centers of education, 00:24:18.76\00:24:21.79 from nothing to the unimaginable. 00:24:21.82\00:24:23.96 Asian Aid's development projects provide child's sponsorship, 00:24:28.02\00:24:31.91 fresh water and medical care for women and lepra victims. 00:24:31.94\00:24:37.04 They provide a high standard of education 00:24:37.07\00:24:39.10 to empower children. 00:24:39.13\00:24:42.29 Asian Aid has a vision driven by a woman 00:24:42.32\00:24:45.04 humbly fulfilling the biblical principle 00:24:45.07\00:24:47.41 that calls for us to care for the least of these. 00:24:47.44\00:24:52.34 This standard is still true today, 00:24:52.37\00:24:55.23 the need is still there. 00:24:55.26\00:24:57.31 Less than 50% of India's children get an education. 00:25:04.36\00:25:08.49 One million women in Nepal suffer from uterine prolapse 00:25:08.52\00:25:11.60 are in need of immediate surgery. 00:25:11.63\00:25:14.04 Over 5,000 babies die everyday due to extreme poverty. 00:25:14.07\00:25:18.81 These are but a few of the harsh realities. 00:25:18.84\00:25:21.42 Asian Aid is meeting these challenges 00:25:25.40\00:25:27.41 and transforming the lives of so many in need, 00:25:27.44\00:25:32.46 always sticking to their core mission, 00:25:32.49\00:25:34.78 giving hope. 00:25:34.81\00:25:36.34 Asian Aid sponsors thousands of children 00:25:46.60\00:25:49.01 in slums and destitute villages. 00:25:49.04\00:25:52.97 They support over 100 schools and orphanages 00:25:53.00\00:25:57.96 and give them a sense of place a home. 00:25:57.99\00:26:02.69 Well, in my dream I was just thinking 00:26:02.72\00:26:04.41 of a small boarding school with may be 50 children 00:26:04.44\00:26:07.79 and that of course did increase to 200 quite fast. 00:26:07.82\00:26:10.46 But now I've to see these buildings 00:26:10.49\00:26:13.17 and this campus is just so amazing. 00:26:13.20\00:26:17.09 And now there are 750 children actually studying 00:26:17.12\00:26:21.41 and learning so much on this school compound. 00:26:21.44\00:26:24.41
