" 00:02:35.75\00:02:39.12 All: Amen. 00:02:39.15\00:02:40.49 All right, so we have several questions that have come in 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.79 and a couple of them are for Dr. Teske... 00:02:42.82\00:02:46.73 they're medical questions 00:02:46.76\00:02:48.10 and I was thinking we could kind of intersperse them 00:02:48.13\00:02:51.87 with our theological questions, if that sounds okay... 00:02:51.90\00:02:55.84 we'll start with a theological question 00:02:55.87\00:02:58.51 and let me just get my glasses on here 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.54 so that I can read these clearly, 00:03:00.58\00:03:02.54 I can read without my glasses, I... I'm still in denial 00:03:02.58\00:03:05.25 but with the glasses I definitely can read well. 00:03:05.28\00:03:08.38 So... "Dear Pastors, 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.12 does God give a Christian supernatural power 00:03:10.15\00:03:15.96 to overcome sin? 00:03:15.99\00:03:17.33 If so, how do we access it? 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.40 Or do we just have to be strong enough on our own 00:03:20.43\00:03:25.60 to give up sin? 00:03:25.63\00:03:26.97 I've asked God to help in changing me 00:03:27.00\00:03:29.34 but I don't feel like any progress is being made. " 00:03:29.37\00:03:32.87 So, who would like to... to get us going on that question? 00:03:32.91\00:03:36.41 Eric, you want to get us going? 00:03:36.44\00:03:37.78 Eric: Yes. James: Get us going. 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.15 Eric: I would love to be able to answer that 00:03:39.18\00:03:41.78 and the reason why is because that question plagued me 00:03:41.82\00:03:45.39 for probably the first 40 years of my life. 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.82 Does God give supernatural power? 00:03:47.86\00:03:51.36 Our Sister Ellen White says that without supernatural power, 00:03:51.39\00:03:56.26 you're lost. 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.10 It's not just that some people need it, 00:03:58.13\00:04:00.07 every single human being has to have supernatural power. 00:04:00.10\00:04:03.34 So, how do we... how do we tap into... 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.94 how do we access that power that God has promised us? 00:04:05.97\00:04:10.58 Well, it's so simple that we miss it... it's by faith. 00:04:10.65\00:04:15.18 God has promised us victory. 00:04:15.22\00:04:18.89 Ellen White says in Education page 126 00:04:18.95\00:04:22.59 that every command is a promise. 00:04:22.62\00:04:25.03 When it's accepted by the will... 00:04:25.06\00:04:28.13 that means, when I open the door of my heart 00:04:28.16\00:04:29.90 and I say, "God, I can't do this 00:04:29.93\00:04:31.27 but I'm willing for You to come in and do it inside of me. " 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.67 God will do it. 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.10 So, to access that victory over sin, 00:04:36.14\00:04:39.41 something that helped me personally was 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.34 to realize that when Jesus was on Calvary, 00:04:42.38\00:04:46.08 He did not simply pay the penalty for my transgression. 00:04:46.11\00:04:51.29 That was only part of the gospel... that was half. 00:04:51.32\00:04:54.16 He not only paid the penalty for my failure, 00:04:54.19\00:04:58.53 but He took our personal sins upon Himself. 00:04:58.56\00:05:04.73 He carried our personal sins in His own body on that tree 00:05:04.77\00:05:09.90 and rather than yield to mine or your personal sins, 00:05:09.94\00:05:15.81 He chose to die rather than sin... 00:05:15.84\00:05:18.81 Romans chapter 6 verses 10 and 11. 00:05:18.85\00:05:21.12 So, what Sister White says is... 00:05:21.15\00:05:23.62 is... we have to now appropriate 00:05:23.65\00:05:27.26 Christ's death on Calvary as my death and as your death. 00:05:27.29\00:05:31.93 It's not just... He paid for it... 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.40 He died unto your temptation... unto your personal sin. 00:05:34.43\00:05:38.90 So, you have to look and say, "When He died... I died... 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.80 I am crucified with Christ... 00:05:42.84\00:05:45.41 I cannot sin for I am born of God... " 00:05:45.44\00:05:48.81 and all of that comes only by faith... 00:05:48.84\00:05:51.65 believing what God has promised. 00:05:51.68\00:05:53.55 James: Great answer Eric. 00:05:53.58\00:05:56.18 Would anyone like to add to that? 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.49 I've got a Bible verse I'd like to add... 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.26 C.A. you got a Bible verse? 00:06:00.29\00:06:01.62 CA Murray: Yeah, I wanted to add John chapter 15... 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.53 the first five verses which is the... the... 00:06:04.56\00:06:07.46 I call it the... "The Abide Lesson" 00:06:07.50\00:06:09.53 that if we're going to bear any good fruit for righteousness, 00:06:09.56\00:06:13.74 we have to abide in Christ 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.47 and... and... as the... the vine... 00:06:15.50\00:06:17.81 the branch abides into the basic heart of the plant 00:06:17.84\00:06:21.41 and draws nourishment from that, we must abide in Christ Jesus 00:06:21.44\00:06:25.01 and only in doing so can we hope to overcome. 00:06:25.05\00:06:32.09 You have some individuals who... who have the ability... 00:06:32.12\00:06:35.22 if you look at the life of Joseph Bates, 00:06:35.26\00:06:37.66 Ellen White talks about Joseph Bates... 00:06:37.69\00:06:40.53 he had the ability to stop doing things 00:06:40.56\00:06:42.46 through force of will. 00:06:42.50\00:06:43.93 He realized that drinking was bad... 00:06:43.97\00:06:47.14 he just stopped drinking... 00:06:47.17\00:06:48.57 he put the bottle down... never picked it up again. 00:06:48.60\00:06:49.94 He realized that smoking was bad... 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.81 he put the cigarette... the cigar... the pipe down... 00:06:51.84\00:06:54.11 never picked it up again. 00:06:54.14\00:06:55.48 So, you can stop doing things 00:06:55.51\00:06:57.38 through force of will 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.28 but that's not enough... it's... it's not enough, 00:06:59.31\00:07:02.58 you need the indwelling Christ. 00:07:02.62\00:07:04.09 First of all, if you stop doing things because of force of will, 00:07:04.12\00:07:07.32 you haven't asked God for forgiveness, 00:07:07.36\00:07:09.12 so, they're still sitting there as sins... 00:07:09.16\00:07:10.59 you've stopped doing them 00:07:10.63\00:07:11.96 but you haven't been forgiven of those sins... 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.33 so they still condemn you to judgment. 00:07:13.36\00:07:15.23 You need the blood of Christ to cover those sins 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.10 and to remove them from you. 00:07:18.13\00:07:19.57 So, it's more than just not doing a thing... 00:07:19.60\00:07:22.04 it's getting forgiveness for that thing 00:07:22.07\00:07:24.47 and that can only come through the power of Christ. 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.61 James: Amen, I think another summary of that would be 00:07:27.64\00:07:30.21 morality is good... but it's not righteousness by faith. 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.11 Panel: Well said, amen... well said. 00:07:33.15\00:07:35.45 James: Any other Bible verses? 00:07:35.48\00:07:36.92 I have one in John chapter 1 because the question was, 00:07:36.95\00:07:40.89 "How do we tap into that power?" 00:07:40.92\00:07:42.26 And in John chapter 1... when I first became a Christian, 00:07:42.29\00:07:45.06 this was one of my favorite verses... verse 12, 00:07:45.09\00:07:48.70 "But as many as received Him... " 00:07:48.73\00:07:51.33 that is Jesus... 00:07:51.37\00:07:52.97 "to them gave He power to become the sons of God, 00:07:53.00\00:07:56.97 even to them that believe on His name... " 00:07:57.01\00:08:00.11 verse 13, "Which were born, not of blood, 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.24 nor of the will of the flesh, 00:08:03.28\00:08:04.61 nor of the will of man, but of God. " 00:08:04.65\00:08:07.12 We are born again... 00:08:07.15\00:08:08.52 when we're born again, 00:08:08.58\00:08:09.92 we become partakers of the divine nature 00:08:09.95\00:08:11.99 and the divine nature doesn't sin... 00:08:12.05\00:08:14.06 Jesus didn't sin and when you have His nature, 00:08:14.09\00:08:16.83 you don't want to either... you can't do it. 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.56 It's not that it's impossible... 00:08:19.59\00:08:21.26 it was possible for Christ though He never did... 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.67 and it will always be possible for us 00:08:23.70\00:08:25.90 but when the love of God comes in... 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.70 when the character of God comes in... 00:08:27.74\00:08:29.54 when He writes His law in our hearts, 00:08:29.57\00:08:31.57 that's something we just don't want to do 00:08:31.61\00:08:33.54 and the more that we abide in Christ 00:08:33.58\00:08:36.01 as you were saying Murray with... C.A. with John 15, 00:08:36.04\00:08:40.02 as we abide in Christ, we bear fruit 00:08:40.05\00:08:41.65 and that fruit is not fruit of sin... 00:08:41.68\00:08:43.22 it's fruit of righteousness. 00:08:43.28\00:08:44.65 Eric: Pastor Rafferty, can I add something? 00:08:44.69\00:08:46.79 James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:08:46.82\00:08:48.16 Eric: You just brought up something that... 00:08:48.19\00:08:49.52 that we're told in that verse in John chapter 1 verse 12, 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.46 it says, "Even to them that believe on His name... " 00:08:53.50\00:08:58.00 the name "Jesus" actually means Yahweh's or Jehovah's salvation, 00:08:58.03\00:09:05.51 Jehovah saves... 00:09:05.54\00:09:06.88 so, when we say, "I believe on Jesus... " 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.78 I'm literally saying, 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.18 "I believe, God, that you will do what you promised me... 00:09:11.21\00:09:14.72 that you will save me from my sins... " 00:09:14.75\00:09:17.89 and as we speak our faith in Him, 00:09:17.95\00:09:20.86 Ellen White says, "God does what He's promised" 00:09:20.89\00:09:24.53 so we have that... that act of faith in speaking 00:09:24.56\00:09:28.16 and claiming that promise and yielding 00:09:28.20\00:09:30.20 as Pastor Murray said. 00:09:30.23\00:09:32.07 James: Okay, there's only one theologian among us 00:09:32.10\00:09:34.07 who hasn't spoken yet, 00:09:34.10\00:09:35.44 I don't know if he wanted to. 00:09:35.47\00:09:36.81 All: Laughter. 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.51 Stephen: Well, I was just waiting to glean 00:09:39.54\00:09:42.11 all of the wisdom of the other theologians... 00:09:42.14\00:09:44.68 but yeah, I'd just like to mention, 00:09:44.71\00:09:47.28 wherever I travel, I have people ask this question, 00:09:47.32\00:09:50.09 "How do I overcome sin?" 00:09:50.12\00:09:52.09 and I usually ask them a question, 00:09:52.12\00:09:56.12 "What are you watching and listening to?" 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.16 Because... because sin is overcome 00:09:59.19\00:10:02.76 or you lose the battle with sin 00:10:02.80\00:10:06.23 depending on what you allow to come through your five senses. 00:10:06.30\00:10:10.24 If we're beholding Christ on the Cross, 00:10:10.27\00:10:14.01 for example, you know, 00:10:14.04\00:10:16.75 Ellen White says that we're supposed to spend that hour 00:10:16.78\00:10:19.91 dwelling... thoughtful hour... dwelling on the life of Christ 00:10:19.95\00:10:24.09 particularly the closing scenes. 00:10:24.12\00:10:25.52 You know, when we hear Him crying out, 00:10:25.55\00:10:27.79 "My God... My God... why have You forsaken Me?" 00:10:27.82\00:10:30.03 When we hear Him tremble in the... in the Garden, 00:10:30.09\00:10:32.26 "Let this cup pass from Me: 00:10:32.29\00:10:34.26 nevertheless Your will be done, not Mine. " 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.57 We ask Jesus, "Why did this happen to You?" 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.84 He says, "It's because of your sins. " 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.54 Then we see how terrible sin is... 00:10:42.57\00:10:44.17 the sin is terrible because it sent my best friend to the cross 00:10:44.21\00:10:50.08 and as I behold the holiness of Christ, 00:10:50.11\00:10:53.21 then the things I watch on television 00:10:53.25\00:10:56.28 which is mostly illicit sex... you know... materialism etc. 00:10:56.32\00:11:04.13 what I place in my mind either strengthens or weakens 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.50 my ability to overcome sin... it's the bottom line, 00:11:07.56\00:11:10.90 so, abiding in Christ in practical terms 00:11:10.93\00:11:13.54 means beholding Him... and being changed from glory to glory. 00:11:13.57\00:11:17.57 That's a very practical answer 00:11:17.61\00:11:19.71 and so, I would ask this person, you know, 00:11:19.74\00:11:21.94 "What are you watching... what are you listening to?" 00:11:21.98\00:11:23.85 If we're watching or listening to the world, 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.31 we're going to become like the world. 00:11:26.35\00:11:27.68 If we're watching and we're listening to Christ, 00:11:27.72\00:11:30.32 we're going to become like Christ... 00:11:30.35\00:11:32.09 it's a law that by beholding we're changed. 00:11:32.12\00:11:33.99 James: Second Corinthians 3:18 and Great Controversy 555, 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.83 so, that law works both ways... it works both ways. 00:11:37.86\00:11:40.53 CA Murray: You know, this is a very important point 00:11:40.56\00:11:43.16 because if you look at 00:11:43.20\00:11:45.13 the books of 1st... 2nd... 3rd John three times, 00:11:45.17\00:11:47.77 John says, "He that is in Christ, does not sin... " 00:11:47.80\00:11:50.34 and you can get kind of turned around 00:11:50.37\00:11:54.41 because it also says that 00:11:54.44\00:11:57.25 if we sin, we have an advocate with the Father. 00:11:57.28\00:11:59.41 James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:11:59.45\00:12:00.78 CA Murray: You know, okay, what are you saying to me? 00:12:00.82\00:12:03.15 I'm not going to sin or if I sin... 00:12:03.18\00:12:04.52 and, of course, the understanding is that... 00:12:04.55\00:12:07.46 that the text is in the imperfect tense... 00:12:07.49\00:12:10.46 so he does... that... that is in Christ, 00:12:10.49\00:12:12.96 does not continue to sin... does not live in sin... 00:12:12.99\00:12:15.26 does not wallow in sin... 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.63 does not practice sin 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.00 but if you make a mistake... if you slip and fall... 00:12:18.03\00:12:20.77 if something comes into your life momentarily 00:12:20.80\00:12:24.64 or you have a little lapse... Christ has taken care of that, 00:12:24.67\00:12:27.84 you know, it's... it's... it's... it's taken care of... 00:12:27.88\00:12:31.01 you're not... you're not abandoned... 00:12:31.05\00:12:32.85 you're not left to yourself. 00:12:32.88\00:12:34.88 So, what... what I want... 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.38 I don't want to keep... 00:12:36.42\00:12:37.85 James, I don't want to keep fighting sin... 00:12:37.89\00:12:40.72 I want to get the victory over it... 00:12:40.76\00:12:42.46 I want to get to the point in my life 00:12:42.49\00:12:44.09 where this has no attraction to me anymore. 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.90 I don't want to spend every day saying, 00:12:46.96\00:12:48.93 "Okay, I'm not going to look at this... 00:12:48.96\00:12:50.77 I'm not going to go there... 00:12:50.80\00:12:52.13 I'm not going to go out of my house 00:12:52.17\00:12:53.50 because I may see something... I may do something... 00:12:53.54\00:12:54.87 I may smell something... I may touch... 00:12:54.90\00:12:56.24 I may taste something... I'm just going to stay home. " 00:12:56.27\00:12:58.14 I want to get to the point where I can walk through the world 00:12:58.17\00:13:01.24 and the world has no attraction to me... 00:13:01.28\00:13:03.71 I want to be... I want to be done with that 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.15 and Christ says, "That is possible... 00:13:06.18\00:13:08.28 old things can be past... 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.29 all things can be made new... " 00:13:10.32\00:13:12.19 I can get to the point where I don't even want that anymore, 00:13:12.22\00:13:15.22 I don't desire that anymore... 00:13:15.29\00:13:16.73 that's true victory 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.09 and that only comes through the indwelling of Christ. 00:13:18.13\00:13:20.50 I can... I can stop doing it 00:13:20.53\00:13:22.16 but that doesn't make me stop wanting it... 00:13:22.23\00:13:25.20 I want to stop doing it and I want to stop wanting it. 00:13:25.23\00:13:28.37 James: Righteousness by faith. 00:13:28.40\00:13:29.97 CA Murray: Precisely, I want to get to that point in my life 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.47 and... and we can have that through the power of Christ. 00:13:32.51\00:13:34.64 James: All right, let's get the good doctor in here, 00:13:34.68\00:13:36.51 what do you say? 00:13:36.54\00:13:38.31 Dr. Teske, we've done a lot of theologising... theologizing 00:13:38.35\00:13:42.88 here and you can... please feel free to enter into that with us 00:13:42.92\00:13:45.79 too, I don't want... just because you're a doctor, 00:13:45.85\00:13:47.39 doesn't mean you might not have a... 00:13:47.42\00:13:48.76 some great stuff to add to... to our conversation 00:13:48.79\00:13:51.03 but I wanted to ask a couple of questions that have come in 00:13:51.06\00:13:54.33 that are focused on health 00:13:54.36\00:13:55.80 and I think health is really important, 00:13:55.83\00:13:57.73 we're told that it is the right arm of the third angel's message 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.57 and the third angel's message and the judgment 00:14:00.60\00:14:02.57 are connected together. 00:14:02.60\00:14:03.94 My wife is a Registered Dietician... Nutritionist 00:14:03.97\00:14:07.01 and she loves health 00:14:07.04\00:14:08.78 and so, you know, 00:14:08.81\00:14:10.48 she is always reminding me of how important health is 00:14:10.51\00:14:14.08 and so, I'm so thankful you're here 00:14:14.12\00:14:15.72 and can answer some questions there 00:14:15.75\00:14:17.29 so the question that's come in here... 00:14:17.32\00:14:18.65 the first one we have for you is this, 00:14:18.69\00:14:20.02 "Is it true that we remember everything we experience 00:14:20.06\00:14:25.93 and if that is true, 00:14:25.96\00:14:28.06 what role does sleep play in that 00:14:28.10\00:14:30.77 and how important is REM sleep 00:14:30.80\00:14:33.37 and why is it the last part of sleep?" 00:14:33.44\00:14:35.57 I'm kind of giving you the whole thing here 00:14:35.60\00:14:37.17 so that you can put a... answer all this stuff... 00:14:37.21\00:14:39.17 put it all together. 00:14:39.21\00:14:40.54 Teske: Would you like me to repeat my lecture? 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.91 All: Laughter. 00:14:42.94\00:14:44.31 Teske: As far as your memory is concerned, 00:14:44.38\00:14:48.68 there's a short-term memory that everything goes in 00:14:48.72\00:14:52.62 as you experience it 00:14:52.65\00:14:54.92 whether it's what you saw, heard, smell... 00:14:54.96\00:14:59.13 taste... everything around you... 00:14:59.16\00:15:00.60 an hour later, I could say, 00:15:00.63\00:15:03.20 "Where did you leave those keys?" 00:15:03.26\00:15:05.73 And you can think back and remember 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.67 and figure out where they were, 00:15:07.70\00:15:09.50 now, if you left them there and I ask you a week later, 00:15:09.57\00:15:13.74 where was something you laid down... 00:15:13.78\00:15:15.44 you might or might not be able to trace back the memories 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.88 and figure out where it was 00:15:18.91\00:15:20.55 because they've become dimmer or erased. 00:15:20.58\00:15:23.75 We talked about... during the night 00:15:23.79\00:15:27.39 when you're in this stage one and two non-REM sleep, 00:15:27.42\00:15:31.59 you're starting to go to the real deep sleep 00:15:31.63\00:15:34.10 and then it... there is where you transfer memories 00:15:34.13\00:15:37.43 from the short term up to the long term... 00:15:37.47\00:15:40.50 to the cerebral cortex 00:15:40.54\00:15:41.87 where they become this integrated memory... 00:15:41.90\00:15:44.71 the database that you operate on that's you... up here... 00:15:44.74\00:15:48.98 that's all up there and the fascinating part about it... 00:15:49.01\00:15:53.28 we can see it on the EEGs... 00:15:53.31\00:15:55.22 you can actually see in this... 00:15:55.25\00:15:56.72 these... they call them little sleep spindles... 00:15:56.75\00:15:58.79 they go Bzzzz... Bzzzz... Bzzzz... 00:15:58.82\00:16:00.32 and they can actually trace those, 00:16:00.36\00:16:02.22 if you were practicing the piano that day 00:16:02.26\00:16:04.83 and really working on learning some parts, 00:16:04.86\00:16:06.86 what they'll find is, those little bzzz... bzzz... 00:16:06.90\00:16:09.30 they trace them... 00:16:09.33\00:16:10.67 they're going right up to the motor cortex there 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.67 from your fingers... 00:16:12.70\00:16:14.04 in other words, you're actually storing in memory 00:16:14.07\00:16:16.44 the position of these, 00:16:16.47\00:16:17.94 not the short term that you store at this stage 00:16:17.97\00:16:19.97 but now they're in the integrated total memory 00:16:20.04\00:16:22.44 of everything that's going on there 00:16:22.48\00:16:25.01 and the next day, you go to the piano 00:16:25.05\00:16:27.52 and even though you were struggling with that yesterday, 00:16:27.55\00:16:29.85 now, you go there and it flows... 00:16:29.88\00:16:33.25 it's integrated... it's being coordinated by the cerebellum 00:16:33.29\00:16:36.19 and you put that up in the context here 00:16:36.22\00:16:39.03 of the rest of the cortex 00:16:39.06\00:16:40.40 and everything that goes on there, 00:16:40.43\00:16:41.76 and you're really able to put that memory... 00:16:41.80\00:16:44.73 that memory has been stored up in a more permanent location 00:16:44.77\00:16:48.10 and all of your memories are stored that way 00:16:48.14\00:16:51.74 in the various parts of the brain. 00:16:51.77\00:16:53.41 The interesting thing is that your frontal cortex... 00:16:53.44\00:17:00.42 your pre-frontal lobe... 00:17:00.45\00:17:01.78 where you actually make a decision 00:17:01.82\00:17:04.65 what to store and what to discard. 00:17:04.69\00:17:07.56 You don't want to save everything you've experienced... 00:17:07.59\00:17:10.93 where you parked your car at the Mall 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.53 is not really going to be relevant next year 00:17:13.56\00:17:16.30 but it will be a couple of hours from now 00:17:16.33\00:17:19.00 when you're done shopping 00:17:19.03\00:17:20.84 but that's something you want to erase 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.57 and you want to erase that flash drive every night 00:17:22.60\00:17:25.24 so you got a clean flash drive 00:17:25.27\00:17:27.31 ready to go to store the new events of the day 00:17:27.34\00:17:29.61 and whatever else you're going to learn... 00:17:29.64\00:17:31.88 you want to put there 00:17:31.91\00:17:33.25 and they've actually done studies and they can... 00:17:33.28\00:17:35.45 they've discovered that it is your pre-front... 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.72 this is the same part of your brain 00:17:37.75\00:17:39.15 that makes your moral decisions... 00:17:39.19\00:17:40.92 your right and wrong decisions... 00:17:40.96\00:17:42.62 I choose to do this... 00:17:42.69\00:17:44.13 the power of the will... 00:17:44.16\00:17:45.53 all of these are actually taking place up in here... 00:17:45.59\00:17:48.66 the power-decision thought is in this frontal cortex 00:17:48.73\00:17:51.63 and that's actually... you're unconscious 00:17:51.67\00:17:54.94 but it is this part that is making the decision 00:17:54.97\00:17:58.61 of what you're going to store 00:17:58.64\00:18:00.58 and what you're not going to store 00:18:00.61\00:18:03.45 and of course, how is it going to make that decision? 00:18:03.48\00:18:06.72 Very fascinating how they come up with these experiments 00:18:06.75\00:18:09.92 but they actually take this group of college students 00:18:09.95\00:18:12.55 and they give them this list of things to... 00:18:12.59\00:18:13.99 list of words right here 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.66 and then they have them look at all of these words 00:18:15.69\00:18:17.86 in this list right here 00:18:17.89\00:18:19.23 and then, few hours later, 00:18:19.26\00:18:20.60 they'll ask them to repeat and say how much they can remember. 00:18:20.63\00:18:22.76 But then they will ask them the next morning 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.13 how much they can remember 00:18:25.17\00:18:26.50 and find out what... you know, you lose a lot of stuff... 00:18:26.53\00:18:30.01 you save some stuff 00:18:30.04\00:18:31.37 but then they do the same thing... 00:18:31.41\00:18:33.24 but this time, as they go through the list, 00:18:33.27\00:18:34.88 some of them are marked with little asterisks... 00:18:34.91\00:18:37.25 those are the ones we want you to remember 00:18:37.28\00:18:38.91 because we're going to ask you 00:18:38.95\00:18:40.35 about those in the asterisk next... tomorrow. 00:18:40.38\00:18:42.58 As they go through and read the list... same thing... 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.15 testing in a few hours is about the same as the day before... 00:18:45.19\00:18:49.42 now, testing the next day after a good eight hours of sleep, 00:18:49.46\00:18:53.63 the memory recall of the asterisk ones 00:18:53.66\00:18:56.73 is way up compared to the others. 00:18:56.77\00:18:59.00 In other words, that intellectual thought of... 00:18:59.03\00:19:01.90 "I need to remember this... " 00:19:01.94\00:19:03.27 actually allowed you to transfer it up to the permanent memory 00:19:03.30\00:19:07.84 during the night... 00:19:07.88\00:19:09.38 in other words, you're more... 00:19:09.41\00:19:11.38 so, what you decide is important is going to make a difference. 00:19:11.41\00:19:14.85 James: Okay. 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.22 Teske: But, there is another thing, 00:19:16.25\00:19:17.59 we talked about the motor, you know, learning... 00:19:17.62\00:19:20.46 whether it's learning to ride a tricycle 00:19:20.49\00:19:22.89 or whether it is learning to play the piano... 00:19:22.92\00:19:25.39 your motor... or gymnastics... whatever... 00:19:25.43\00:19:27.70 learning motor skills... 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.80 you'll notice there... 00:19:29.83\00:19:31.87 in other words... practice... repetition. 00:19:31.90\00:19:34.17 Pastor Bohr was talking about what we watch... what we do... 00:19:34.20\00:19:38.67 that repetition of watching the same type of thing... 00:19:38.71\00:19:42.51 seeing the same type of... 00:19:42.54\00:19:43.88 whatever is the trend of what we're feeding on, 00:19:43.91\00:19:47.52 the frontal context is going to put that up 00:19:47.55\00:19:51.25 in your permanent long-term storage... 00:19:51.29\00:19:54.39 you know, you become what you are... 00:19:54.42\00:19:57.46 as we say, when we behold Christ continuously, 00:19:57.49\00:20:00.43 what's going to be stored in that cortex 00:20:00.50\00:20:03.13 to perfectly reflect the character of Christ... 00:20:03.16\00:20:06.33 to have His character impressed upon us 00:20:06.40\00:20:09.07 means to be stored in that cortex... being part of that... 00:20:09.10\00:20:12.81 it's all going to... yeah, it comes in here... 00:20:12.84\00:20:16.48 you are your mind... 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.68 you know, salvation takes place in your mind, 00:20:18.71\00:20:21.98 you know, it's... 00:20:22.02\00:20:23.59 this Christ in you... is in your mind. 00:20:23.62\00:20:27.19 The tabernacle service... you know, 00:20:27.26\00:20:30.79 foreshadowed all of this. 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.46 Your mind is that tabernacle... 00:20:32.49\00:20:36.16 the Shekinah glory has come to dwell in there. 00:20:36.20\00:20:38.40 James: So how does that... what you're saying... 00:20:38.43\00:20:40.64 how does that relate to REM sleep? 00:20:40.67\00:20:42.00 Is this REM sleep that you're talking about... 00:20:42.04\00:20:43.37 or is REM sleep different? 00:20:43.41\00:20:44.74 Teske: No, that's a totally different thing. 00:20:44.77\00:20:46.11 James: Oh it is... okay... so, how important is that? 00:20:46.14\00:20:49.78 Teske: REM sleep takes place in... in the sleep cycle, 00:20:49.81\00:20:52.81 your first... there's usually a deep cleaning cycle 00:20:52.85\00:20:55.78 as we wash all of the chemical debris out of the mind 00:20:55.82\00:20:58.89 and get a clean mind. 00:20:58.92\00:21:00.26 James: We keep the stuff we want to keep... 00:21:00.29\00:21:01.62 Teske: No, that's different... the first part... 00:21:01.66\00:21:03.26 and then you're storing the good stuff 00:21:03.29\00:21:05.56 and then later on, you're deleting that flash drive 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.86 of the unimportant stuff... 00:21:08.90\00:21:10.27 then, REM sleep is totally different. 00:21:10.30\00:21:13.00 In REM sleep, you not only disconnect all the senses, 00:21:13.03\00:21:16.24 but you also disconnect the motor... 00:21:16.27\00:21:18.97 there's a switching board in your thalamus... 00:21:19.01\00:21:21.24 in the center of your brain... 00:21:21.28\00:21:22.61 when you go to sleep, you switch off the sensory input 00:21:22.64\00:21:25.75 you're not hearing... seeing... feeling... 00:21:25.78\00:21:28.72 it takes a lot to override that and break in and, you know, 00:21:28.75\00:21:32.85 shake you awake or a loud siren to wake you up. 00:21:32.89\00:21:35.06 So, that's the sensory coming in... 00:21:35.09\00:21:38.49 but when you move to REM sleep, 00:21:38.53\00:21:41.86 we also switch off the motor output... 00:21:41.90\00:21:44.53 you become totally paralyzed during REM sleep. 00:21:44.57\00:21:46.74 James: Oh really? 00:34:35.40\00:34:38.27 Panel: Laughing. 00:34:38.31\00:34:40.11 Bohr: Of course... in order to drive you have to have the Title 00:34:40.14\00:34:44.55 and you have the fitness 00:34:44.58\00:34:46.98 or else you're not... you're not going to be able to drive 00:34:47.02\00:34:49.85 and so, the same is true with salvation. 00:34:49.88\00:34:51.92 You have to have the imputed 00:34:51.95\00:34:53.96 and the imparted righteousness of Christ. 00:34:53.99\00:34:55.62 James: All right, let's add to that, 00:34:55.69\00:34:57.13 so, let's say you have your title... 00:34:57.16\00:34:58.53 and you have your fitness and you go out and drive 00:34:58.56\00:35:01.00 and you break the speed limit 00:35:01.03\00:35:02.86 and this has happened to me, you know, 00:35:02.90\00:35:05.40 I've been pulled over by a Police Officer and I'm guilty... 00:35:05.43\00:35:07.57 I'm guilty of transgressing the law, 00:35:07.60\00:35:08.97 at that point, I've... 00:35:09.00\00:35:11.67 you know, I've got the fitness because I can drive 00:35:11.71\00:35:13.58 and I've got the title because I've got my license, 00:35:13.61\00:35:15.44 but I'm a transgressor 00:35:15.48\00:35:16.85 and at that point, I'm under the law. 00:35:16.88\00:35:20.32 What I mean by that is 00:35:20.35\00:35:21.68 I'm under the condemnation of the law 00:35:21.72\00:35:23.05 and in the Christian experience 00:35:23.08\00:35:25.19 as in my experience with one Police Officer, 00:35:25.22\00:35:27.06 instead of writing me out the ticket, 00:35:27.09\00:35:29.39 he extended to me grace or mercy... 00:35:29.42\00:35:32.16 he forgave me but he said to me, 00:35:32.19\00:35:34.86 "I don't want you to be driving this car 00:35:34.93\00:35:39.00 in violation of the law from this point on... " 00:35:39.03\00:35:41.20 and you know what I said? 00:35:41.27\00:35:42.60 I said, "Thank you very much Officer, 00:35:42.64\00:35:43.97 believe me... I will not be violating the law anymore. " 00:35:44.01\00:35:47.24 Panel: Go and sin no more. 00:35:47.28\00:35:48.61 Bohr: Let me piggyback on that, let me piggyback on that 00:35:48.64\00:35:50.85 because I had an... I had that experience. 00:35:50.88\00:35:53.08 James: I think we all have to some degree, right? 00:35:53.11\00:35:55.28 Bohr: When I was pastor of Fresno Central Church... 00:35:55.35\00:35:57.45 I just arrived... it was the first year that I was here, 00:35:57.49\00:36:00.02 we had a fantastic Prayer Meeting... 00:36:00.06\00:36:02.36 we sang and we gave testimonies and we studied the Word 00:36:02.42\00:36:06.13 and I was really pumped up 00:36:06.19\00:36:07.76 so, when I got out, I went to... 00:36:07.80\00:36:10.20 and I turned on to First Street 00:36:10.23\00:36:12.60 and I was going about 55 miles an hour 00:36:12.63\00:36:16.91 in a 40-mile-per-hour zone 00:36:16.94\00:36:18.37 I saw the police lights behind me, so I stopped. 00:36:18.41\00:36:22.81 By the way, to make a long story short, 00:36:22.84\00:36:25.18 I didn't have a Driver's License with me 00:36:25.21\00:36:27.48 and I didn't have the auto registration available 00:36:27.52\00:36:30.62 but he checked me out in the computer 00:36:30.65\00:36:32.42 and he asked me... "What... what do you do?" 00:36:32.45\00:36:35.29 I was almost embarrassed to tell him... 00:36:35.32\00:36:36.69 I said, "I'm a Pastor... " 00:36:36.73\00:36:38.49 and he says, "Well, do you know why I stopped you?" 00:36:38.53\00:36:40.63 "Yes, I was going over the speed limit... " 00:36:40.66\00:36:43.06 and then I said, 00:36:43.10\00:36:44.43 "You know, we just came out of a Prayer Meeting here... 00:36:44.50\00:36:46.77 just a couple of blocks from here... 00:36:46.80\00:36:49.00 and I was pumped up and my head was in the clouds... " 00:36:49.04\00:36:51.97 and he says, 00:36:52.01\00:36:53.88 "Yeah, but when you're driving, it needs to be on the earth. " 00:36:53.94\00:36:55.91 All: Laughter. 00:36:55.94\00:36:58.08 Bohr: And so, then he says to me he says to me... 00:36:58.11\00:37:01.48 "You know, being that you didn't do it intentionally, 00:37:01.55\00:37:04.75 you were just kind of... you were just kind of out of it, 00:37:04.79\00:37:07.96 I'm going to forgive your ticket... " 00:37:07.99\00:37:10.33 and so, he forgave my ticket. 00:37:10.36\00:37:12.19 James: Okay. 00:37:12.23\00:37:13.56 Bohr: He did the wrong thing. James: Oh? 00:37:13.60\00:37:14.93 Bohr: He did the wrong thing, 00:37:14.96\00:37:16.53 see the illustration of the Policeman saying, 00:37:16.56\00:37:19.50 "I'll let you go this time... " 00:37:19.53\00:37:21.27 is not a full illustration. 00:37:21.30\00:37:23.20 James: Okay. 00:37:23.27\00:37:24.87 Bohr: And the illustration of "Justification" would be... 00:37:24.91\00:37:26.57 if the policeman says, 00:37:26.61\00:37:27.98 "My job is not to forgive your ticket, 00:37:28.01\00:37:31.08 my job is to enforce the law and you've broken the law 00:37:31.11\00:37:35.88 so, you have to pay for the ticket 00:37:35.92\00:37:38.39 but because you're sorry, 00:37:38.42\00:37:40.39 I'm going to go down to the Police Station 00:37:40.42\00:37:42.96 and I'm going to pay the ticket... " 00:37:42.99\00:37:44.33 that's where the illustration is complete 00:37:44.36\00:37:47.40 because if he just allows me to get off the hook 00:37:47.43\00:37:50.90 without enforcing the law, 00:37:50.93\00:37:52.27 you're actually making fun of the law. 00:37:52.30\00:37:54.17 James: Right... yeah... good... good. 00:37:54.24\00:37:56.10 CA Murray: We all have one, 00:37:56.14\00:37:57.47 I got to just put this in real quick... 00:37:57.51\00:37:58.84 speeding to Prayer Meeting on Wednesday night, 00:37:58.87\00:38:00.68 pulled over by the New York City police, 00:38:00.71\00:38:02.38 I... actually I had baptized several New York City Policemen, 00:38:02.44\00:38:05.91 I have a little card that I was given by a policeman that said 00:38:05.95\00:38:09.42 yeah... basically... "Show it when you put one... 00:38:09.45\00:38:11.52 when they ask you for license and registration... 00:38:11.55\00:38:12.89 pull out this card, 00:38:12.92\00:38:14.46 I guarantee you, they'll let you go... " 00:38:14.49\00:38:15.82 and I... and I did that once 00:38:15.86\00:38:17.19 and he said... he said, "What is that?" 00:38:17.23\00:38:18.76 I said, "I got this from Sergeant so and so... 00:38:18.79\00:38:21.36 he's a member of my church. " 00:38:21.40\00:38:22.73 He said, "Okay... " 00:38:22.76\00:38:24.10 he said, "Are you a real Pastor?" 00:38:24.13\00:38:25.47 I said, "Yeah... " 00:38:25.50\00:38:26.84 "You believe in God?" I said, "Yes. " 00:38:26.87\00:38:28.40 He said, "Okay, slow down 00:38:28.44\00:38:29.97 or you're going to meet your boss. " 00:38:30.01\00:38:31.34 All: Laughter. 00:38:31.37\00:38:33.27 James: Eric... 00:38:33.31\00:38:35.38 Eric: This is... this is interesting... 00:38:35.41\00:38:37.65 there is a statement that was made by W.W. Prescott 00:38:37.68\00:38:40.72 and Ellen White was at the sermon where he shared this. 00:38:40.75\00:38:43.75 James: Avondale? 00:38:43.79\00:38:45.12 Eric: Yes... he said, "To receive Christ, 00:38:45.15\00:38:49.16 or to believe on Christ... is to receive Christ... 00:38:49.19\00:38:51.79 not to merely receive a set of doctrines 00:38:51.83\00:38:55.76 but to receive a life. " 00:38:55.80\00:38:58.73 So, when I accept Christ, 00:38:58.77\00:39:01.64 I'm not just accepting that He did something outside of me, 00:39:01.67\00:39:05.67 I'm saying, "I accept You coming into me 00:39:05.71\00:39:09.18 and now living Your life of holiness and purity 00:39:09.21\00:39:13.72 and obedience in my mortal flesh. " 00:39:13.75\00:39:16.38 2nd Corinthians 4:10 and 11. 00:39:16.42\00:39:18.72 So, it's not just to believe on Him, 00:39:18.75\00:39:21.46 it's to love Him enough to let Him rule and reign 00:39:21.49\00:39:25.39 and conquer sin in my life. 00:39:25.43\00:39:27.50 James: And one thing that I think 00:39:27.53\00:39:28.86 that these illustrations are brought up 00:39:28.90\00:39:31.37 is how inadequate illustrations are 00:39:31.43\00:39:33.84 to fully explain the gospel of Jesus Christ... 00:39:33.87\00:39:38.07 that everlasting gospel. 00:39:38.11\00:39:39.44 I think there's a place where we're told that 00:39:39.47\00:39:42.01 you can't explain it, you have to... 00:39:42.04\00:39:44.15 it has to be experienced. 00:39:44.18\00:39:45.91 You can't... so, we can argue about... jzjzbzbz 00:39:45.98\00:39:47.58 and all this theological stuff but the truth of the matter is: 00:39:47.62\00:39:50.72 "To as many as have received Him... 00:39:50.75\00:39:52.42 to them He gives power to become 00:39:52.45\00:39:53.86 the sons and daughters of God 00:39:53.92\00:39:55.26 and that is an experience that you can't necessarily 00:39:55.29\00:39:58.23 always wrap around... words around or illustrations 00:39:58.26\00:40:01.26 or, you know, illustrate. 00:40:01.30\00:40:02.86 Okay, let's get to another question here, 00:40:02.90\00:40:04.63 this one... we're going back to... 00:40:04.67\00:40:07.60 to our... our good Dr. Teske, we're going to give him 00:40:07.64\00:40:10.84 this question with a caveat of time 00:40:10.87\00:40:14.61 because, Man! you've got so much stuff that you can share with us 00:40:14.64\00:40:17.48 it's... it's great 00:40:17.55\00:40:19.35 but we've got about 17 minutes left... 00:40:19.38\00:40:20.85 we got a few more questions and a couple have come in 00:40:20.92\00:40:22.85 so, Dr. Teske, "What is the recommended dose 00:40:22.88\00:40:26.69 for Vitamin B12... is it 5,000 mcgs daily or twice a week? 00:40:26.76\00:40:32.99 Teske: This will be a short answer, 00:40:33.03\00:40:34.80 you know, the dosage is 5,000 micrograms 00:40:34.83\00:40:40.14 which is the same as 5 milligrams 00:40:40.17\00:40:42.07 but for some reason, they always like to write 5,000 micrograms. 00:40:42.10\00:40:44.41 James: Okay. 00:40:44.44\00:40:46.21 Teske: And a couple of times a week, 00:40:46.24\00:40:49.84 you will pick up enough to cover your daily needs. 00:40:49.88\00:40:52.98 Remember, your liver can store up to about 5 years' worth 00:40:53.01\00:40:58.09 of Vitamin B12 00:40:58.12\00:40:59.65 and because of its irregular appearance 00:40:59.69\00:41:03.89 in our vegetarian diet, 00:41:03.93\00:41:05.99 storing up some extra might be of value to you 00:41:06.03\00:41:10.20 and particularly, 00:41:10.27\00:41:12.47 you may well be running on very minimal reserves 00:41:12.50\00:41:15.04 if you've been a vegetarian for a long time. 00:41:15.07\00:41:17.54 It's, you know, only it's going to come from animal sources, 00:41:17.57\00:41:21.88 you know, such as meat 00:41:21.91\00:41:23.24 and if we're living on a plant-based diet 00:41:23.28\00:41:25.98 in this day and age, 00:41:26.01\00:41:27.35 you will become deficient 00:41:27.38\00:41:29.12 and you will experience 00:41:29.15\00:41:31.12 permanent irreversible nerve damage... 00:41:31.15\00:41:33.66 brain damage down the road here at some point 00:41:33.69\00:41:36.62 if you are deficient, yeah 00:41:36.66\00:41:39.09 yeah... and so, I would recommend that you take 00:41:39.13\00:41:43.20 the 5,000 micrograms every day, you won't forget it, 00:41:43.23\00:41:46.47 you don't have to keep track of it... 00:41:46.50\00:41:48.04 it just becomes a daily habit, put it there... 00:41:48.07\00:41:50.71 get the little ones that dissolve in your mouth 00:41:50.74\00:41:53.38 that you chew or dissolve in your mouth... 00:41:53.41\00:41:55.51 we explained that in the lecture. 00:41:55.54\00:41:57.25 If you missed the lecture, go back 00:41:57.28\00:41:58.81 and you can pick up those details 00:41:58.88\00:42:00.35 but 5,000 micrograms every day if you're on a plant-based diet. 00:42:00.42\00:42:04.92 James: Which I do... I do a Vitamin B12 every day 00:42:04.95\00:42:07.36 and it really helps me in stressful situations... 00:42:07.39\00:42:09.56 it really helps me 00:42:09.59\00:42:10.99 and I can tell when I'm low on Vitamin B12 actually... 00:42:11.03\00:42:13.40 I... I have some skin issues that I deal with... 00:42:13.43\00:42:16.10 Eczema that I deal with and I can always tell... 00:42:16.13\00:42:18.73 it's always related to my Vitamin B12 00:42:18.77\00:42:20.54 so, sometimes, I'll take a little bit more 00:42:20.57\00:42:21.90 and sure enough, there's a direct connection there 00:42:21.94\00:42:24.74 so, it's really been helpful for me. 00:42:24.77\00:42:26.47 Stress is a big factor, I think, for me anyway 00:42:26.51\00:42:28.84 when it comes to... 00:42:28.88\00:42:30.21 okay, here's a question, 00:42:30.25\00:42:31.58 "Dear Pastors, Pastor Murray said, 00:42:31.61\00:42:32.95 Pastor Murray said in his sermon this morning 00:42:32.98\00:42:37.49 on Sabbath 00:42:37.52\00:42:38.95 that now is the time of judgment. 00:42:38.99\00:42:41.59 How long do you think the judgment has been going on? 00:42:41.62\00:42:44.96 Also, is it possible that my life has already been examined 00:42:44.99\00:42:48.76 and my fate has been sealed?" 00:42:48.80\00:42:50.40 And then I just want this a little bit 00:42:50.43\00:42:52.57 because there's a little bit more to this 00:42:52.60\00:42:53.94 that kind of fills it out. 00:42:53.97\00:42:55.30 "After a long departure from God, 00:42:55.34\00:42:57.81 I came to my senses and asked God where I stood with Him. 00:42:57.84\00:43:00.41 This was followed by a short dream 00:43:00.44\00:43:02.31 in which an image of a dead little girl was in the desert 00:43:02.34\00:43:04.95 followed by a TV screen listing my sins. 00:43:04.98\00:43:07.08 Ever since then, I feel like God has already judged me 00:43:07.12\00:43:10.59 and destined me to hell. 00:43:10.62\00:43:11.95 I have no peace whatsoever 00:43:11.99\00:43:13.39 regarding my salvation, thank you.
