Welcome back, we've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.61 We told you when we come back, you'll be 00:00:03.64\00:00:05.91 up-to-date and hopefully feel great, 00:00:05.94\00:00:07.14 because we're looking at various studies that... 00:00:07.18\00:00:10.14 you do a lot of research Dr. Nedley, 00:00:10.17\00:00:12.30 or should I say you, at least, are familiar 00:00:12.33\00:00:14.56 with the research that's going on 00:00:14.59\00:00:15.91 You do have some research you're doing with the 00:00:15.94\00:00:18.89 depression recovery program and mental peak performance 00:00:18.92\00:00:21.57 Anything else, you're actually, yourself researching right now? 00:00:21.60\00:00:24.70 Well a lot of it is just reviewing the medical literature 00:00:24.73\00:00:28.30 and the journals that cross my desk, 00:00:28.33\00:00:31.09 putting that in a format where others can utilize it 00:00:31.12\00:00:33.72 and benefit from the many studies that are being done 00:00:33.75\00:00:36.24 around the world. 00:00:36.27\00:00:39.29 Oh by the way, you can get on your website... drnedley. com 00:00:39.30\00:00:42.94 and many of the things we talked about today are there... 00:00:42.97\00:00:45.70 Is that correct? That's right 00:00:45.73\00:00:47.79 We're going to talk about a pretty... 00:00:47.82\00:00:49.68 well, some would say controversial topic for some 00:00:49.69\00:00:53.82 We're going to talk about AIDS cases increasing in 00:00:53.85\00:00:59.22 those that are involved in what we call hazardous behaviors 00:00:59.25\00:01:02.83 Well yes, and it's actually not really controversial it's 00:01:02.86\00:01:06.52 the Centers of Disease Control who did the study... Okay 00:01:06.55\00:01:08.98 and stated it very clearly... 00:01:09.01\00:01:11.00 That men who have sex with men, are showing a troubling increase 00:01:11.03\00:01:16.61 in new diagnosis of HIV Hmm 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.48 And this is occurring particularly in young men 00:01:19.51\00:01:22.10 between the ages of 13 and 24... Wow 00:01:22.13\00:01:26.37 And the abbreviation the CDC uses now is 00:01:26.40\00:01:29.46 MSM instead of homosexuality... 00:01:29.49\00:01:32.24 And the reason why they do that that's "men having sex with men" 00:01:32.27\00:01:36.87 is because not all homosexuals are purely homosexual... 00:01:36.90\00:01:40.91 You know, they go the heterosexual behavior 00:01:40.94\00:01:43.28 sometimes, etcetera, and so they can flip back and forth 00:01:43.31\00:01:46.21 But the MSM portion is the part where HIV is rapidly growing. 00:01:46.41\00:01:53.80 In fact, between 2001 and 2006, it was the largest HIV 00:01:53.83\00:01:59.21 transmission category in the U.S., 00:01:59.24\00:02:01.25 and the ONLY one associated with an increasing number 00:02:01.28\00:02:04.03 of HIV in AIDS diagnosis. 00:02:04.06\00:02:07.46 Wow, and this is young people too, basically 13-24, you said? 00:02:07.49\00:02:11.43 That's right, and a lot of people think AIDS is kind of 00:02:11.46\00:02:13.30 a thing in the past... you know, the medicines do have 00:02:13.33\00:02:15.24 a tendency to control it somewhat... 00:02:15.27\00:02:17.22 It's still a deadly disease, and still one that, 00:02:17.25\00:02:20.42 obviously, should be avoided at all costs. 00:02:20.45\00:02:23.79 And during this study period, 214,379 diagnoses occurred 00:02:23.82\00:02:30.18 of NEW HIV cases in the United States alone... 00:02:30.19\00:02:34.20 46% of that group was the MSM group 00:02:34.21\00:02:38.40 that I previously described... 00:02:38.41\00:02:40.17 And unfortunately, they're not really conforming to a lifestyle 00:02:40.20\00:02:46.81 and protective measures that would help them along this line. 00:02:46.84\00:02:50.85 That's too bad... Now, you know this whole idea, 00:02:50.86\00:02:53.38 sometimes people say, "Well, that's just the way I am, 00:02:53.41\00:02:55.49 I'm predisposed to that genetically," and... 00:02:55.50\00:02:59.70 You know, there's been no proof to that, 00:02:59.73\00:03:01.19 and I'd like to just state that there has been a 00:03:01.22\00:03:05.11 number of studies that have been done on this 00:03:05.14\00:03:07.48 and it is NOT something where you can even take a picture 00:03:07.51\00:03:12.29 of the brain, or measure testosterone, measure anything 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.56 and tell whether an individual is homosexual. 00:03:15.59\00:03:19.75 Now there are some things that have been proven, 00:03:19.78\00:03:22.34 as far as environmental is concerned... 00:03:22.37\00:03:25.52 For instance, if the woman is STRESSED, 00:03:25.55\00:03:28.52 ...this is an animal study, pregnant rats who are stressed 00:03:28.55\00:03:32.65 with electric shocks that are painful for them, 00:03:32.68\00:03:36.01 anytime of day, 24 hours a day, 00:03:36.04\00:03:38.42 they might get these randomly, 00:03:38.45\00:03:39.88 may wake them up in the middle of the night... 00:03:39.91\00:03:41.42 Do in other words, they stress these poor, pregnant 00:03:41.43\00:03:43.56 mother rats as much as they possibly could during the time 00:03:43.59\00:03:46.52 that they're carrying their young... 00:03:46.53\00:03:48.58 half of their male offspring had homosexual behavior in rats 00:03:48.59\00:03:54.63 So it's not just in animals... 00:03:54.66\00:03:56.83 and, of course, the extrapolation from that... 00:03:56.86\00:03:58.88 is if the mother is stressed, 00:03:58.91\00:04:00.34 there may be a predisposition along that line. 00:04:00.35\00:04:04.39 And the other predisposition... 00:04:04.43\00:04:05.40 So in other words, if your mother was defibrillated, 00:04:05.41\00:04:07.60 every day or shocked countless times, 00:04:07.64\00:04:09.75 then you might have an excuse for this? 00:04:09.78\00:04:11.86 Or you might have a predisposition to this. 00:04:11.89\00:04:14.86 You have a predisposition... 00:04:14.89\00:04:16.15 You know, we're all predisposed to things that are not healthy 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.27 And some of us, more so than others... 00:04:19.30\00:04:20.99 Some people are more predisposed to becoming alcoholic 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.92 ...you know, it's in their predisposition because of 00:04:23.93\00:04:26.06 the effects of their parents or etcetera, 00:04:26.09\00:04:28.66 and some are even genetic. 00:04:28.67\00:04:30.86 But anyone who is predisposed... 00:04:30.89\00:04:33.50 In fact, studies have shown there are people that are 00:04:33.53\00:04:35.54 dramatically predisposed to becoming alcoholics 00:04:35.57\00:04:38.14 but they NEVER become an alcoholic. 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.49 Why is that? They choose never to drink it. 00:04:40.52\00:04:44.24 And so, there's still a personal choice involved in regards to 00:04:44.27\00:04:49.32 what is appropriate, and what isn't appropriate. 00:04:49.35\00:04:52.67 But the other predisposition tends to occur in males that 00:04:52.70\00:04:56.83 have a problem relationship with a father, 00:04:56.84\00:05:00.77 and they have a melancholic personality. 00:05:00.78\00:05:03.36 So if they are a melancholic personality male who has a 00:05:03.39\00:05:06.53 problem relationship with their father, 00:05:06.56\00:05:07.89 that seems to predispose the individual... 00:05:07.90\00:05:11.84 But having said that, many homosexuals come about 00:05:11.87\00:05:15.26 is a result of recruitment. 00:05:15.27\00:05:17.00 They don't have any of the predisposing factors. 00:05:17.01\00:05:20.32 And studies show that once a male has a homosexual 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.77 relationship, even if they weren't wanting it... 00:05:23.78\00:05:27.18 In other words, they were RAPED by another male 00:05:27.21\00:05:29.85 ...Half of them will actually become homosexual after that 00:05:29.88\00:05:36.06 first experience. 00:05:36.09\00:05:37.57 Now, after the third experience, if they have sex with 00:05:37.60\00:05:41.14 another man, 3 times, they will become almost 00:05:41.17\00:05:44.91 exclusively homosexual... 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.17 In other words, they WON'T want to have heterosexual 00:05:47.20\00:05:49.83 relationships, and that's when they're breaking up with their 00:05:49.86\00:05:52.37 girlfriend now, and that's when they're, you know, 00:05:52.40\00:05:54.64 revealing that they're "no longer heterosexual, 00:05:54.67\00:05:57.17 I'm homosexual" etc. 00:05:57.20\00:05:58.84 But often, it's through the recruitment mode 00:05:58.85\00:06:03.16 that these things take place. 00:06:03.17\00:06:05.06 And that is the mode that is often neglected 00:06:05.09\00:06:09.35 as a predisposition. 00:06:09.38\00:06:13.04 And there are some physiologic things that occur 00:06:13.07\00:06:16.19 in that recruitment aspect of things that many men 00:06:16.20\00:06:20.11 don't understand that predisposed them to... 00:06:20.14\00:06:24.27 from a heterosexual, becoming homosexual... 00:06:24.30\00:06:27.81 And often, that can occur even in childhood. 00:06:27.84\00:06:30.27 You know, often, it's the boys that are raped because of 00:06:30.30\00:06:35.36 "the tighter area there" the man is looking for greater 00:06:35.39\00:06:39.24 dopamine rush and, so he's looking for tighter areas 00:06:39.25\00:06:43.48 and then the boy is recruited and never had any 00:06:43.51\00:06:47.03 homosexual tendencies prior to that, but then becomes one. 00:06:47.06\00:06:50.47 Just because of that exposure and, you said, one time 00:06:50.48\00:06:53.95 there's a certain percentage... what was it again? 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.83 50% of them will continue... 00:06:55.86\00:06:59.85 In other words, say... homosexuality, you know, 00:06:59.88\00:07:02.66 was an experience that I want to do again. 00:07:02.67\00:07:05.99 And then once they do it the third time, 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.61 almost exclusively homosexual 00:07:07.64\00:07:09.24 In other words, they won't have interest in 00:07:09.27\00:07:10.59 heterosexual side of things. 00:07:10.62\00:07:12.73 So, you know, if someone gets involved in that... 00:07:12.76\00:07:16.52 because of these high risk things between 00:07:16.55\00:07:18.58 men sexually active with other men, 00:07:18.61\00:07:21.10 you know, and probably for other reasons, 00:07:21.13\00:07:24.97 if there are other reasons that people would say... 00:07:25.00\00:07:27.22 "I think maybe you should STOP doing this, 00:07:27.25\00:07:29.72 and have a different behavior" 00:07:29.73\00:07:31.84 Is it best to ask people to stop that type of behavior? 00:07:31.87\00:07:35.90 Oh ABSOLUTELY. Health wise for sure... 00:07:35.93\00:07:38.44 Yeah, and they CAN stop... 00:07:38.47\00:07:39.63 I mean that's another myth... 00:07:39.66\00:07:40.81 that an individual, once they're homosexual will never 00:07:40.84\00:07:42.92 be able to stop that behavior. 00:07:42.95\00:07:44.45 That's a myth that's been disproven in countless cases. 00:07:44.48\00:07:47.92 And, we have dealt with those cases as well. 00:07:47.95\00:07:50.83 There's an adverse mental health effect 00:07:50.86\00:07:54.04 associated with homosexuality. 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.24 It's been well-described in the literature... 00:07:56.27\00:07:57.55 For instance, they're more likely to be majorly depressed 00:07:57.58\00:08:01.67 ...have clinical depression, etc. 00:08:01.70\00:08:03.44 And so, some of them go through our 00:08:03.47\00:08:06.19 depression recovery program 00:08:06.22\00:08:08.85 and, as a result of going through the depression recovery 00:08:08.88\00:08:11.59 program, that enhancement and their recognition, 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.21 that it would be best to change that behavior 00:08:14.22\00:08:17.22 are able to do so! 00:08:17.25\00:08:18.39 There's a process involved, particularly if you're in the 00:08:18.42\00:08:20.95 habit, and you've had that, it's a process 00:08:20.98\00:08:23.45 It's not something that's instantaneous... 00:08:23.48\00:08:25.24 But it's a process that can be completed very successfully. 00:08:25.27\00:08:29.17 Let's go to another study! 00:08:29.20\00:08:31.42 Sudden hearing loss, a harbinger of a stroke. 00:08:31.45\00:08:36.12 Yes, some people will experience hearing loss suddenly... 00:08:36.15\00:08:40.26 And they're not sure why 00:08:40.29\00:08:41.51 And they think their ears are plugged. 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.08 And they'll come to me, and they'll, you know, 00:08:43.11\00:08:44.98 "What's going on... do my ears need to be cleaned out?" 00:08:45.01\00:08:47.42 "I can't hear in this ear" 00:08:47.45\00:08:48.93 And what this reveals is... 00:08:48.94\00:08:50.52 it's often a small stroke that did it. 00:08:50.53\00:08:52.79 And so, if you have sudden hearing loss, get checked out... 00:08:52.82\00:08:55.39 It could be a small stroke. 00:08:56.35\00:08:57.71 And this was published in the October issue, 2008, of 00:08:57.74\00:09:02.03 "The Journal Stroke" 00:09:02.06\00:09:03.89 Early warning sign of an impending stroke 00:09:03.92\00:09:06.16 that could be worse... So get it checked out. 00:09:06.19\00:09:08.18 Even for young people? 00:09:08.21\00:09:09.90 Even for younger people. Correct 00:09:09.93\00:09:11.82 Okay, let's go to our next study... 00:09:11.83\00:09:13.81 Silent strokes may occur early in middle age... 00:09:13.84\00:09:16.32 and what's middle age? What's early middle age? 00:09:16.35\00:09:18.08 Well... 30 to 49-year-old 00:09:18.11\00:09:20.04 We don't tend to think of middle age that way, 00:09:20.05\00:09:22.44 but 30 to 49 years of age, 00:09:22.47\00:09:25.84 if we do MRI scans, we find out that over the 00:09:25.87\00:09:30.21 course of a few years, about 1 in 10 of them 00:09:30.24\00:09:33.58 will begin to suffer these little areas of 00:09:33.59\00:09:37.16 small strokes in the brain. 00:09:37.19\00:09:39.72 And, it's due to the lifestyle that these 30 to 49 year olds 00:09:39.75\00:09:42.77 are on, and it doesn't show up as a stroke where they 00:09:42.80\00:09:46.28 end up in the hospital, but it shows up as far as 00:09:46.31\00:09:48.76 maybe a more greater memory problem, 00:09:48.79\00:09:50.98 maybe lack of focus, maybe a hearing problem 00:09:51.01\00:09:54.86 ...Maybe something isn't quite right with the brain, 00:09:54.89\00:09:57.85 and that's a sign that they might need to get an MRI 00:09:57.88\00:10:00.13 And, unfortunately, many radiologists are reading these 00:10:00.16\00:10:02.66 "holes" out as "normal" since so many people have them 00:10:02.69\00:10:05.62 They might say, "Normal due to age" 00:10:05.65\00:10:07.86 And at age 45, even! 00:10:07.89\00:10:09.69 And get a radiologist to read that report, 00:10:09.72\00:10:13.21 and if there are any holes there whatsoever, 00:10:13.24\00:10:16.14 I want to know about them as a physician, 00:10:16.17\00:10:18.33 because that's a time when we can really alter a patient's 00:10:18.36\00:10:22.37 clinical course, and prevent more of those, 00:10:22.40\00:10:24.34 and preserve that most important organ of the body 00:10:24.37\00:10:27.08 which is the human brain. 00:10:27.11\00:10:28.86 Pregnancy pounds! 00:10:28.89\00:10:30.17 The lady who gains more pounds, 00:10:30.20\00:10:32.34 it affects the children's weight 00:10:32.35\00:10:34.93 They actually weigh more? 00:10:34.94\00:10:36.31 That's right. And this is a common problem 00:10:36.34\00:10:38.88 Women gaining too much during pregnancy 00:10:38.91\00:10:41.09 You know, for years, gynecologists stressed that 00:10:41.12\00:10:43.14 "We want a woman to gain 25 pounds" 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.20 If they're normal weight, they need to gain 25 pounds 00:10:45.23\00:10:47.93 during pregnancy, and sometimes they'll say that word "at least" 00:10:47.96\00:10:50.73 And what happens is... A lot of women think this 00:10:50.76\00:10:53.41 is a license to eat whatever whenever, 00:10:53.44\00:10:56.05 and as much as they want... 00:10:56.06\00:10:57.37 And many of them will gain 40 or more pounds. 00:10:57.40\00:10:59.94 And they never lose it. 00:10:59.97\00:11:01.06 And that's unfortunate... 00:11:01.09\00:11:02.14 Many times that's how they start that pattern of obesity 00:11:02.17\00:11:04.99 and they don't really lose all of that afterwards. 00:11:05.02\00:11:07.63 But what the study showed is... 00:11:07.66\00:11:08.90 If your mother gained more than 35 pounds during pregnancy, 00:11:08.93\00:11:13.31 that your risk of becoming obese yourself 00:11:13.34\00:11:18.38 as a child, goes up! 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.68 In fact for every... 48% more likely it says? 00:11:20.71\00:11:26.18 Well it's 48% more likely, but it showed 00:11:26.21\00:11:29.19 that by age 7, that for every 3% ... I should say, every 2 pounds 00:11:29.22\00:11:38.09 that the woman put on above that 35 pound rate, 00:11:38.12\00:11:42.29 there was a 3% increase in weight at age 7, in that child. 00:11:42.32\00:11:50.34 And so, that's... every 2 pounds, 00:11:50.35\00:11:52.81 and some people, unfortunately 00:11:52.84\00:11:54.36 I've seen people put on 65-70 pounds 00:11:54.39\00:11:57.17 during the time that they're pregnant 00:11:57.20\00:11:58.49 And, that's adversely affecting that child's future. 00:11:58.52\00:12:01.65 So, if the mom says, "Go get me this, or I'm going to go 00:12:01.68\00:12:04.70 crazy"... You just say, "Well... 00:12:04.71\00:12:06.84 They need to know... "Let's just gain the 25 pounds" 00:12:06.87\00:12:09.10 And if they're overweight already, they should only gain 00:12:09.13\00:12:11.56 about 15 to 20 pounds. 00:12:11.57\00:12:13.37 They shouldn't go for the 25 pounds. 00:12:13.40\00:12:15.18 This was "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," June 2008 00:12:15.21\00:12:19.16 that this study was in. 00:12:19.19\00:12:21.03 Well, Dr. Nedley, a lot of these studies...
