I want to just review again 00:00:09.72\00:00:11.87 for those who were watching that maybe had transient memory 00:00:11.90\00:00:15.10 and immediately forgot this. 00:00:15.13\00:00:16.64 And we want to look at what we were talking about... 00:00:16.67\00:00:18.29 the different forms of memory loss... 00:00:18.32\00:00:21.62 We had TRANSIENCE, which basically... you just heard 00:00:21.65\00:00:25.52 something and then you just immediately forget it 00:00:25.55\00:00:28.03 is a transient fact 00:00:28.06\00:00:29.35 Yeah, well, it's not just immediately... 00:00:29.38\00:00:30.70 that's more absentmindedness... 00:00:30.73\00:00:31.99 But transience means that you tend to lose it over time 00:00:32.02\00:00:35.69 You DID know it, but then you lose it. 00:00:35.72\00:00:37.30 ABSENTMINDEDNESS... You're not watching and you get lost... 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.37 and you're not really paying attention... Lack of focus 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.63 BLOCKING... You knew it but it's on the tip-of-your-tongue 00:00:42.66\00:00:46.41 You can't bring it back... That's right 00:00:46.44\00:00:47.93 MISATRIBUTION... you attribute to someone else... 00:00:47.96\00:00:50.78 "Oh, that's what I wrote. " "That's what I said, 00:00:50.81\00:00:52.48 but it wasn't really you at all. " 00:00:52.51\00:00:53.79 That's right, or some detail you have partial memory 00:00:53.82\00:00:56.95 but the complete memory is flawed. 00:00:56.96\00:00:58.69 SUGGESTIBILITY... Someone else says, "You did this, 00:00:58.72\00:01:01.58 and you did that" And you say, "I did it" 00:01:01.61\00:01:03.23 This is, many times, in cases of abuse, or even other things 00:01:03.26\00:01:07.73 where we looked at some of those things. Right? 00:01:07.76\00:01:10.92 BIAS... You bring your own sense of opinions, 00:01:10.95\00:01:14.31 and different things to the situation, 00:01:14.34\00:01:16.28 and you're using that... 00:01:16.31\00:01:17.78 You put it through your mental filter, and it messes up your... 00:01:17.81\00:01:20.57 In other words, you rewrite history based on your bias 00:01:20.60\00:01:23.21 on what actually occurred. 00:01:23.24\00:01:24.52 And then, PERSISTENCE... 00:01:24.55\00:01:26.81 That's like flashbacks from posttraumatic syndromes 00:01:26.84\00:01:30.11 that's like nightmares when they occur... 00:01:30.14\00:01:32.07 and those different things... 00:01:32.10\00:01:33.60 Things that we'd like to forget, 00:01:33.64\00:01:34.80 but they continue to come forward. 00:01:34.84\00:01:35.97 So let's say you have a patient that comes to you, 00:01:36.00\00:01:38.50 and they're saying, "I have memory losses" 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.22 What do you do? 00:01:40.25\00:01:41.44 Or what do you recall that you do? 00:01:41.45\00:01:43.71 Well, ha, ha, ha first we need to find out 00:01:43.74\00:01:47.30 which one of these memory problems is there. 00:01:47.33\00:01:50.23 And probably one of the most common ones that people 00:01:50.24\00:01:53.77 come to me for... They don't tend to come 00:01:53.78\00:01:55.43 to me for blocking, for instance 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.80 They don't tend to come to me for bias. 00:01:57.83\00:02:00.18 They don't think they are biased. 00:02:00.21\00:02:02.02 You know, they think they're accurate. 00:02:02.05\00:02:03.98 What they tend to come to me and complain about 00:02:04.01\00:02:06.57 is their inability to retain the 00:02:06.60\00:02:08.81 information a long period of time, 00:02:08.84\00:02:10.76 so their short-term memory is a problem, 00:02:10.79\00:02:12.99 or intermediate memory is a problem, 00:02:13.02\00:02:14.97 and that's why they're there. 00:02:15.00\00:02:16.37 So that's the transience part. 00:02:16.40\00:02:17.86 So if they truly have transience, 00:02:17.89\00:02:20.34 I actually start to do a workup on them. 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.82 So what do you do? 00:02:22.85\00:02:24.34 Well, first of all, I will give them a mental status examination 00:02:24.37\00:02:28.65 This is kind of a mental test to see how their recall is, 00:02:28.68\00:02:33.05 see how their ability is to... 00:02:33.08\00:02:35.17 How did I do by going through those different things? 00:02:35.20\00:02:37.57 Was my recall all right? 00:02:37.60\00:02:39.11 Your recall was pretty good... 00:02:39.14\00:02:40.57 but we could go through a "Mini Mental Status Exam" here 00:02:40.60\00:02:44.57 It might take us the rest of the program... 00:02:44.60\00:02:46.84 It usually takes us about 5 to 7 minutes to do it. 00:02:46.87\00:02:50.07 And then we could find out how you're truly doing... 00:02:50.10\00:02:53.60 But ah... Well, let's just go ahead 00:02:53.63\00:02:55.46 and do that between ourselves 00:02:55.49\00:02:56.67 so no one else has to remember it... HA, HA, HA, HA 00:02:56.70\00:02:59.40 So you do this mental status exam... 00:02:59.43\00:03:01.48 which is a battery of questions? 00:03:01.51\00:03:02.82 Battery of questions... right. 00:03:02.85\00:03:04.53 That you remember, or they have that a written form? 00:03:04.56\00:03:07.03 Well no, it's not a written form 00:03:07.06\00:03:08.51 I'm actually testing them. 00:03:08.54\00:03:09.87 I'll give them 3 things to recall later on 00:03:09.90\00:03:12.67 I'll make sure that they know where they're at, 00:03:12.70\00:03:16.73 and they know what city, and what state... 00:03:16.76\00:03:19.11 some simple things like that. 00:03:19.14\00:03:20.37 Then I'll have them do some simple math. 00:03:20.38\00:03:22.35 Actually, it gets a little more complicated by the 7th question 00:03:22.38\00:03:27.28 But it is math that the average individual should be able to do. 00:03:27.31\00:03:30.05 Counting backwards, simple addition. That's right 00:03:30.06\00:03:32.34 Subtracting 7's from 100 serially is what we tend to do. 00:03:32.37\00:03:37.28 And then, as far as their past memory, 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.44 seeing if they can remember the past 4 presidents. 00:03:40.47\00:03:43.65 And then see if they can obey simple commands. 00:03:43.68\00:03:46.86 that have 2 or 3 steps to them before they start them. 00:03:46.89\00:03:50.81 I mean... "Bush, Bush, Bush" is pretty... Ha, ha, ha, ha... okay 00:03:50.84\00:03:56.00 Okay, so you have those different tests... 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.41 Right, and then that can tell me a little about the 00:03:58.44\00:04:01.15 character of the memory problem. 00:04:01.18\00:04:02.96 Then, as part of the examination I will also measure 00:04:02.99\00:04:07.69 some things in their blood. 00:04:07.72\00:04:09.19 There are some things in the blood that are very much 00:04:09.22\00:04:11.47 associated with lack of transient memory, 00:04:11.50\00:04:15.48 in other words, transience becomes a problem over time. 00:04:15.51\00:04:18.98 And, this would be things like high homocysteine levels 00:04:18.99\00:04:22.10 Is that right? So that's related to 00:04:22.13\00:04:23.55 transient memory loss... That's right 00:04:23.58\00:04:25.48 And if the homocysteine level is high, 00:04:25.51\00:04:28.01 then we're going to try to do our best to get it down 00:04:28.04\00:04:30.46 And if we can get it down, 00:04:30.49\00:04:31.85 the individual's memory will improve. Hmm 00:04:31.88\00:04:35.36 How do you get the homocysteine down 00:04:35.39\00:04:36.79 besides amputation? Ha, ha, ha 00:04:36.82\00:04:39.22 There isn't amputation. 00:04:39.25\00:04:40.92 Homocysteine is an amino acid that can adversely 00:04:40.95\00:04:43.40 affect the memory. 00:04:43.43\00:04:44.51 But we bring it down through vitamins actually... B12 00:04:44.54\00:04:47.81 B12 is critically important in memory. 00:04:47.84\00:04:51.09 We'll measure the B12 level and see what it is. 00:04:51.12\00:04:53.87 And we like to see B12 levels greater than 500. 00:04:53.90\00:04:56.86 If they're less than 350, often it can cause 00:04:56.89\00:04:59.80 some mild-to-moderate memory problems. 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.66 If it's less than 100, it can cause some rather severe 00:05:02.67\00:05:05.29 memory deficits. 00:05:05.32\00:05:06.81 So, along with that, we'll measure folate. 00:05:06.84\00:05:09.20 Folate is a B vitamin that also will bring the 00:05:09.23\00:05:12.71 homocysteine level down nicely and help the memory. 00:05:12.74\00:05:15.33 And then the other 2 vitamins associated with that are 00:05:15.36\00:05:17.91 vitamin B6 and vitamin B2. 00:05:17.94\00:05:20.83 So all the B's... 00:05:20.86\00:05:21.90 If you're living with all the B's, you'll be all right. 00:05:21.93\00:05:25.17 If you're living with all the B's, you'll be much better 00:05:25.18\00:05:28.27 as far as transient memory is concerned. 00:05:28.30\00:05:31.22 Okay, so anything else for transience? 00:05:31.25\00:05:33.72 Yes, there are some other things. 00:05:33.75\00:05:36.35 High cholesterol levels actually can adversely affect 00:05:36.36\00:05:39.52 the memory... in SEVERAL WAYS it's not just the 00:05:39.56\00:05:42.23 plugged arteries... and studies show that the higher 00:05:42.27\00:05:45.01 the cholesterol levels, 00:05:45.04\00:05:46.06 the more little memory holes you'll see on an MRI 00:05:46.09\00:05:51.41 And so getting the cholesterol level down 00:05:51.44\00:05:53.37 can help preserve the memory. 00:05:53.40\00:05:54.87 So ANYONE that has a memory problem, 00:05:54.90\00:05:56.91 I always measure their cholesterol level 00:05:56.94\00:05:59.03 measure their LDL cholesterol, as well as triglycerides... 00:05:59.06\00:06:03.35 All of these can have adverse 00:06:03.38\00:06:04.74 effects as far as the memory is concerned. 00:06:04.77\00:06:07.16 So basically, anything that would lead to heart disease 00:06:07.19\00:06:09.68 also leads to... 00:06:09.71\00:06:11.24 There's a mind-heart connection. 00:06:11.27\00:06:12.97 Is that right? Yes 00:06:13.00\00:06:14.34 And, you know, the Bible was pretty accurate 00:06:14.37\00:06:15.95 Often the Bible uses those terms interchangeably 00:06:15.98\00:06:19.37 and if you have a heart problem, 00:06:19.40\00:06:22.11 you actually, very likely, also have mind problems, 00:06:22.14\00:06:25.20 and vice versa can also occur 00:06:25.23\00:06:28.56 Then on top of that, I'll do simple things like 00:06:28.59\00:06:30.89 measuring their blood pressure. 00:06:30.90\00:06:32.37 Studies show the higher the blood pressure, 00:06:32.40\00:06:35.12 the faster the memory declines with age. 00:06:35.15\00:06:37.91 And it doesn't need to occur that way 00:06:37.94\00:06:40.25 if we keep the blood pressure down... 00:06:40.29\00:06:41.57 And that's why even things like sodium intake 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.58 can have a role to play... 00:06:43.61\00:06:44.59 The HIGHER the sodium intake, 00:06:44.62\00:06:46.03 the LOWER the memory goes with age... 00:06:46.06\00:06:49.14 And so we need to watch that as we age. 00:06:49.17\00:06:52.27 SO, homocysteine, cholesterol, sodium, 00:06:52.30\00:06:56.20 and then get your B vitamins 00:06:56.23\00:06:58.61 Anything else in terms of transience? Vitamin D 00:06:58.64\00:07:03.32 Vitamin D Oh again, it shows up! 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.74 Vitamin D... one of the problems is that we cannot 00:07:05.77\00:07:08.79 store our memories in our hippocampus. 00:07:08.82\00:07:12.33 What occurs at night when you're resting... is that 00:07:12.36\00:07:15.44 you're actually going through some storage systems 00:07:15.45\00:07:19.10 I see... You know, backup systems 00:07:19.13\00:07:20.49 You know how your computer backs up at night, 00:07:20.52\00:07:22.49 or if you have a good computer system, 00:07:22.52\00:07:24.31 that's what's happening at night. 00:07:24.34\00:07:25.85 The same thing occurs with your brain computer. 00:07:25.88\00:07:28.86 At night, you're actually storing those memories 00:07:28.87\00:07:31.37 And you have to have a melatonin level 00:07:31.40\00:07:33.89 that's up in order to be able to very precisely 00:07:33.92\00:07:37.60 store those memories. Hmm 00:07:37.63\00:07:39.11 That's one of the reasons why college students 00:07:39.12\00:07:42.34 ...the lifestyle factor most related to how good they do 00:07:42.37\00:07:46.52 in college... is early to bed, early to rise 00:07:46.55\00:07:49.32 Why is that? 00:07:49.35\00:07:50.59 The earlier they go to bed, closer to when the sun goes down 00:07:50.62\00:07:54.89 the more melatonin they make! 00:07:54.92\00:07:56.79 And the more melatonin they make, 00:07:56.82\00:07:58.44 the better their working memory is, 00:07:58.45\00:08:00.99 and the better able they are to recall those things. 00:08:01.02\00:08:04.61 And what studies show is... 00:08:04.64\00:08:06.95 if you don't have vitamin D on board, 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.16 you don't have calcium come in... 00:08:09.19\00:08:11.59 And if you don't have calcium cross your intestinal tract 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.65 into your bloodstream, 00:08:14.68\00:08:16.06 it adversely affects your melatonin output. 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.70 So you're not putting out melatonin. 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.61 And so, we measure anyone that has a memory problem 00:08:20.64\00:08:23.53 We're now measuring vitamin D's in all of them 00:08:23.56\00:08:26.30 And that's something very simple And CALCIUM too... 00:08:26.33\00:08:28.78 CALCIUM... Now it turns out calcium in the bloodstream 00:08:28.81\00:08:31.23 is regulated by the kidneys, 00:08:31.26\00:08:32.93 and the parathyroid hormones and those type of things. 00:08:32.97\00:08:37.76 Your calcium can LOOK okay in the bloodstream... 00:08:37.79\00:08:39.15 when in reality, it's being leached from your bone 00:08:39.18\00:08:41.91 to get it to be okay 00:08:41.94\00:08:43.81 And, that doesn't help your melatonin level... 00:08:43.84\00:08:46.14 you need calcium in your diet in order to be able to 00:08:46.17\00:08:48.88 put out the melatonin. 00:08:48.91\00:08:50.38 Fascinating, so, you know, when they're in the military, 00:08:50.41\00:08:55.40 sometimes in the military, they will sleep-deprive 00:08:55.43\00:08:58.57 different people in different parts of the Service 00:08:58.58\00:09:01.12 to see how they do under sleep deprivation... 00:09:01.15\00:09:04.31 Why do they do that? 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.46 They do it to see what affects their memory actually... 00:09:05.49\00:09:09.79 And also their ability to perform and both things go down. 00:09:09.82\00:09:14.15 Their memory is not as much of a problem as the frontal lobe 00:09:14.18\00:09:17.16 Sleep deprivation affects the frontal lobe more so 00:09:17.19\00:09:20.57 than the memory, but it can also affect the memory. 00:09:20.60\00:09:23.31 And so we need adequate sleep in order to have very good memories 00:09:23.34\00:09:29.10 So, anything else... you've got another patient 00:09:29.13\00:09:31.43 that comes in to save... 00:09:31.47\00:09:32.58 What other form do you want to talk about 00:09:32.61\00:09:34.11 in our remaining time... absentmindedness, blocking, 00:09:34.15\00:09:36.41 misattributions, suggestibility Which? 00:09:36.45\00:09:38.40 Yeah, we can talk about absentmindedness. 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.26 Absentmindedness... You need a more organized brain, 00:09:40.29\00:09:42.34 and you need a brain that provides focus 00:09:43.46\00:09:45.39 And so, for those individuals, 00:09:45.42\00:09:46.74 we're going to talk about omega-3 00:09:46.77\00:09:48.83 Omega-3 in the diet will significantly help the 00:09:48.86\00:09:51.57 absentmindedness, significantly improve the focus. 00:09:51.60\00:09:55.18 And these are foods like walnuts, flaxseeds, spinach, 00:09:55.21\00:09:58.15 almonds... they are great foods for improving your focus, 00:09:58.16\00:10:04.02 and improving your absentmindedness. 00:10:04.05\00:10:07.09 The other thing we are going to recommend is 00:10:07.10\00:10:09.19 classical music, particularly, Baroque music 00:10:09.22\00:10:12.62 Baroque is very organized music. 00:10:12.65\00:10:14.69 It's rhythmic, it has melody, it has harmony. 00:10:14.72\00:10:16.93 It has a lot of interest. 00:10:17.85\00:10:20.90 And Baroque for the brain... 00:10:20.93\00:10:22.91 In fact, we've developed 2 CDs that are based on the music 00:10:22.94\00:10:26.26 that will improve your memory, 00:10:26.29\00:10:28.25 and improve your mental performance. 00:10:28.28\00:10:30.09 You can listen to Baroque for the brain, 00:10:30.12\00:10:32.19 and just simple music therapy can actually 00:10:32.22\00:10:35.35 improve your brain function. 00:10:35.38\00:10:36.77 So if your brain is broke, listen to Baroque! They'll get in. 00:11:17.56\00:11:19.99 Or, in addition, if you are failing college, 00:11:20.02\00:11:23.75 DEFINITELY come because even B grades 00:11:23.78\00:11:27.04 in college will serve you far better later on 00:11:27.07\00:11:29.52 in life than not learning college well 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.77 and getting D's and F's 00:11:32.80\00:11:33.82 Now, we got 1 minute left, 00:11:33.85\00:11:34.83 I have to ask a question you didn't cover... 00:11:34.87\00:11:37.32 Let's say, you know, you have PARTIAL RECALL, 00:11:37.35\00:11:39.77 I mean, you remember SOMETHING about everything, 00:11:39.80\00:11:43.01 but not EVERYTHING about ANYTHING! 00:11:43.04\00:11:45.89 That requires a workup, you know... 00:11:45.92\00:11:48.64 It's similar to the transience problem. 00:11:48.67\00:11:51.71 And that usually means that you're focus isn't good, 00:11:51.74\00:11:56.09 or you're having too many biases. 00:11:56.10\00:11:58.52 And that's why we also utilize cognitive behavioral therapy... 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.83 so we can get rid of errors of thinking. 00:12:01.86\00:12:03.89 There are 10 Commandments in the Bible, 00:12:03.92\00:12:05.43 and there are 10 ways of distorted thinking. 00:12:05.46\00:12:07.47 If we can get rid of the distorted thinking, 00:12:07.48\00:12:09.54 our memories improve. 00:12:09.57\00:12:11.60 And in order to do that, we MIGHT need a workup as well 00:12:11.63\00:12:15.51 We might have a problem with vitamin D, or B12, 00:12:15.54\00:12:17.68 or something like that. 00:12:17.71\00:12:18.85 I'm going to tell you, I will not soon forget this program 00:12:18.88\00:12:22.36 It's got a lot of very interesting things, 00:12:22.39\00:12:24.44 and things that I think we need to remember, 00:12:24.47\00:12:27.39 and that can help us remember. 00:12:27.42\00:12:28.60 Thank you for coming and spending time with us, 00:12:28.63\00:12:31.72 and coming here to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:12:31.73\00:12:34.60 You're welcome...
