Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:49.95\00:00:51.53 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh 00:00:51.56\00:00:52.96 and today we hope you will REMEMBER this program! 00:00:52.99\00:00:56.83 We're going to be talking about memory, 00:00:56.86\00:00:58.21 and here to help us remember what we should remember 00:00:58.24\00:01:00.71 is Dr. Nedley! 00:01:00.74\00:01:02.74 We're glad you're with us! 00:01:02.77\00:01:03.95 Thank you, it's good to be with you as always! 00:01:03.98\00:01:06.27 And for those of you who don't remember Dr. Nedley, 00:01:06.28\00:01:09.03 he is a physician from Ardmore, Oklahoma 00:01:09.06\00:01:11.85 and, also now you are the 00:01:11.88\00:01:13.36 president of "Weimar Center of Health and Education" 00:01:13.39\00:01:17.42 Yes, "Weimar Center of Health and Education" 00:01:17.45\00:01:19.65 and, you know, you've got the "NEWSTART Program" 00:01:19.66\00:01:21.77 there which deals with not only PHYSICAL new starts 00:01:21.78\00:01:26.34 but also mental... peak performance, 00:01:26.37\00:01:29.73 and coming back around, and gaining that optimal 00:01:29.74\00:01:33.78 performance of the brain. 00:01:33.79\00:01:34.99 Memory has a lot to do with that... 00:01:35.02\00:01:36.36 It does have a lot to do with it. 00:01:36.39\00:01:37.93 In fact, we run mental peak performance programs 00:01:37.96\00:01:41.31 where we have people come and live for 5 days 00:01:41.34\00:01:44.72 ...in a hotel, or at Weimar to actually implement 00:01:44.73\00:01:50.61 the principles that will significantly improve their 00:01:50.64\00:01:53.65 mental performance, and often their memory 00:01:53.68\00:01:55.96 will be significantly improved. 00:01:55.99\00:01:57.46 We've had attorneys who were losing recall in the court room 00:01:57.49\00:02:00.35 They'll come through the program, 00:02:00.38\00:02:02.55 and they'll talk about... "Wow, they're a lot sharper" 00:02:02.56\00:02:04.75 They can remember now when they're talking to the jury 00:02:04.78\00:02:07.61 And they can remember the important points without having 00:02:07.64\00:02:10.21 to shuffle and refer back to the notes, etc. 00:02:10.24\00:02:13.44 So it can make a profound difference. 00:02:13.47\00:02:15.15 So memory is, you know, it's not the highest function 00:02:15.18\00:02:19.18 of the brain, but it's a function of the brain that's 00:02:19.21\00:02:20.88 very important! That's right 00:02:20.91\00:02:22.01 The highest function of the brain is 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.51 the analytical portion of the brain, frontal lobe... 00:02:23.52\00:02:27.05 and that's where we accomplish advanced planning, 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.48 and advanced thinking. 00:02:29.51\00:02:30.74 But very important, our frontal lobes are of no use 00:02:30.77\00:02:34.91 unless we have memory 00:02:34.94\00:02:35.97 because that's what we're basing our analysis on 00:02:36.00\00:02:38.58 are things that are actually stored, either recently, 00:02:38.59\00:02:41.71 or in the past, in our memory 00:02:41.74\00:02:44.56 and putting it all together so that our frontal lobes 00:02:44.59\00:02:46.89 can function well. 00:02:46.92\00:02:48.37 So our filing cabinet has to be working well, 00:02:48.40\00:02:51.08 or in computer language, 00:02:51.09\00:02:52.91 we're going to have a short-term and long-term memory available 00:02:52.94\00:02:55.53 Yes, and I've heard some people overstate the importance 00:02:55.56\00:02:58.16 of the frontal lobe by saying... 00:02:58.19\00:02:59.28 "If I had a choice, I'd rather have Alzheimer disease 00:02:59.29\00:03:02.91 and still have a frontal lobe. 00:03:02.94\00:03:04.49 Well, there is no such thing. 00:03:04.52\00:03:06.37 Because, the frontal lobe... yes it primarily affects the memory 00:03:06.40\00:03:10.01 But your frontal lobe is of no use if you don't have memory. 00:03:10.87\00:03:15.09 That's a good point. 00:03:15.13\00:03:16.41 It's like having a car without wheels. 00:03:16.45\00:03:18.11 A good engine with no wheels won't help you. That's right! 00:03:18.14\00:03:20.80 Seven types of memory problems 00:03:20.83\00:03:23.41 you want to talk about to get us started! 00:03:23.45\00:03:26.87 Yes! The first one is transience 00:03:26.90\00:03:28.47 Transience... Yes, and that is a tendency 00:03:28.48\00:03:31.26 to forget facts or figures over time. 00:03:31.33\00:03:35.21 And, of course, the time when we tend to forget 00:03:35.22\00:03:38.70 facts and figures the most 00:03:38.73\00:03:40.73 is actually right after we're given them... sometimes. 00:03:40.76\00:03:44.48 But studies show the longer the time interval from the time we 00:03:44.51\00:03:48.93 have learned the facts, and figures, 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.95 the greater the chance that we're going to lose it. 00:03:50.98\00:03:53.14 So, like, do you know your phone number from when 00:03:53.15\00:03:54.81 you were in your first house growing up? 00:03:54.82\00:03:56.64 Actually, I do! 00:03:56.67\00:03:58.14 Because you lived there so LONG though... That's right! 00:03:58.17\00:04:00.27 I didn't live so long in the first house, 00:04:00.30\00:04:02.19 so I have no clue. Oh, is that right... 00:04:02.22\00:04:04.09 But I know some other numbers, and it's usually when I 00:04:04.12\00:04:06.28 lived there longer. Yeah, that's true. 00:04:06.29\00:04:08.27 And, of course, that means when you use facts and figures 00:04:08.30\00:04:11.97 repeatedly, you're much more likely to retain them over time 00:04:12.00\00:04:15.75 ...even years later. 00:04:15.78\00:04:16.81 You know, it's been... what, 34 years since I 00:04:16.84\00:04:20.38 lived in that home, but I can recite, to you, precisely 00:04:20.41\00:04:23.74 what my phone number was at age 15. 00:04:23.77\00:04:27.39 And I can precisely quote where the places I lived more than 00:04:27.42\00:04:30.84 10 years; which, growing up, I never lived anywhere more than 00:04:30.85\00:04:33.03 like 2-1/2, so... Yeah 00:04:33.06\00:04:34.77 So, transience... that's that type of problem 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.85 Yeah, and actually there is some beneficial aspects 00:04:37.88\00:04:39.87 to transience as well. 00:04:39.90\00:04:41.50 Clears out the brain. You're right! 00:04:41.53\00:04:44.35 It clears the brain. 00:04:44.38\00:04:46.20 And we don't need to brain cluttered with 00:04:46.23\00:04:48.84 unimportant facts and figures. 00:04:48.87\00:04:50.50 Like who cares about your phone number... Exactly! 00:04:50.53\00:04:52.50 It's of no use now. 00:04:52.53\00:04:54.94 And it would be nice if that were, you know, uncluttered 00:04:54.97\00:04:57.86 and we could put something else there of importance 00:04:57.89\00:05:01.06 And so transience does have an important role to play 00:05:01.09\00:05:04.35 but we just need to be able to utilize our memories in such 00:05:04.38\00:05:08.81 a way where we remember the 00:05:08.84\00:05:10.12 important things that we're going to need to recall. 00:05:10.15\00:05:12.44 Absentmindedness! 00:05:12.47\00:05:13.77 Absentmindedness if the second problem with memory loss 00:05:13.80\00:05:19.05 And absentmindedness occurs as a result of lack of 00:05:19.08\00:05:23.25 close enough attention to what needs to be remembered. 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.39 What was that? ha, ha, ha Sort of like that, right? 00:05:26.42\00:05:29.25 Exactly... you were not paying attention... ha, ha, ha 00:05:29.28\00:05:33.80 And that's what causes absentmindedness. 00:05:33.83\00:05:36.18 And so when people lose keys, the problem is absentmindedness 00:05:36.21\00:05:41.00 They just weren't paying attention to 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.17 where they put it down. 00:05:43.20\00:05:44.53 And the brain doesn't get a chance to encode 00:05:44.56\00:05:48.09 the information securely. 00:05:48.12\00:05:51.25 It also involves in forgetting a time... 00:05:51.26\00:05:55.01 maybe forgetting when medicine should be taken. 00:05:55.04\00:06:01.06 Keeping an appointment... all of those things 00:06:01.09\00:06:03.89 not taking even your daily 00:06:03.92\00:06:06.20 vitamin like you're supposed to... 00:06:06.23\00:06:07.83 All of those are due to absentmindedness problems. 00:06:07.86\00:06:11.54 And the solution to that is fairly simple 00:06:11.57\00:06:13.53 in addition to lifestyle measures that we're 00:06:13.56\00:06:15.43 going to mention later on in the program... 00:06:15.46\00:06:17.54 the solution is focus... 00:06:17.57\00:06:19.48 AND if you're going to be repeatedly doing things, 00:06:19.51\00:06:22.63 do them the same way every time 00:06:22.66\00:06:24.90 In other words, put your keys in the same place 00:06:24.93\00:06:27.77 every time... You sound like my wife! 00:06:27.80\00:06:29.10 Ha, ha, ha... Because I have been known 00:06:29.13\00:06:31.25 to lose my keys once in a while. 00:06:31.28\00:06:33.06 But then, didn't Einstein get lost... 00:06:33.09\00:06:35.53 You know, he was a brilliant guy 00:06:35.54\00:06:36.99 but he couldn't find his way home sometimes... 00:06:37.02\00:06:38.38 Yeah, that's true. 00:06:38.41\00:06:39.46 I mean, he would not be able to find his way home... 00:06:39.49\00:06:41.48 and that's due to absentmindedness 00:06:41.49\00:06:43.48 OR, what often happens is you're paying attention to 00:06:43.51\00:06:46.25 something that you thing is more important... 00:06:46.28\00:06:48.82 and so the little details of life kind of go by you 00:06:48.85\00:06:53.03 ...and then occasionally, they bite you. 00:06:53.06\00:06:55.19 My wife doesn't buy the Einstein thing anymore 00:06:55.22\00:06:57.62 because she goes... "You're no Einstein" Ha, ha, ha, ha 00:06:57.63\00:07:00.92 BLOCKING! 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.02 Yes, blocking is where you 00:07:02.05\00:07:05.00 already have it in your memory... 00:07:05.03\00:07:06.75 So in other words, you've had focus... 00:07:06.78\00:07:08.77 it's not absentmindedness anymore. 00:07:08.80\00:07:11.06 The focus has produced a permanent memory of this item 00:07:11.09\00:07:14.91 It's in your hippocampus. 00:07:14.94\00:07:16.31 Your hippocampus is there, and working... 00:07:16.34\00:07:18.22 That section of... it's not a hippo actually camping 00:07:18.25\00:07:20.43 in your place, but that's the... 00:07:20.46\00:07:22.57 That's the section of the brain that actually is 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.48 behind the ear there in what we call the 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.33 temporal lobe of the brain. 00:07:26.36\00:07:27.50 That's where memories are stored. 00:07:27.53\00:07:29.51 And, in this particular instance the problem is being able to 00:07:29.54\00:07:32.85 RETRIEVE that memory. 00:07:32.88\00:07:34.59 And, to be able to bring it forward... 00:07:34.62\00:07:37.18 It's on the tip-of-my-tongue type thing? EXACTLY! 00:07:37.21\00:07:38.92 It's on the tip-of-my-tongue but I can't say it. 00:07:39.84\00:07:42.03 Well what does that mean? 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.14 That means you're "blocking" 00:07:43.17\00:07:45.09 The memory is there, but you can't bring it forward. 00:07:45.12\00:07:48.11 So when you say, "You're blocking" 00:07:48.14\00:07:49.54 that's something you're actually DOING? 00:07:49.55\00:07:50.83 Or is that something that's actually being done? 00:07:50.84\00:07:52.50 Well, it's actually something your brain is doing. 00:07:52.53\00:07:54.74 Your brain is blocking it from actually coming forward. 00:07:54.77\00:07:57.69 It's there... you just can't retrieve it 00:07:57.72\00:07:59.66 when you want to. Hmm 00:07:59.69\00:08:01.12 Now, studies show that when that happens 00:08:01.15\00:08:03.38 50% of the time, you WILL 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.43 be able to bring it forward within 1 minute... Okay 00:08:05.46\00:08:08.38 And so, it's just a matter of getting those neurons refreshed 00:08:08.41\00:08:12.78 and getting that portion of the memory logged 00:08:12.81\00:08:15.03 and bringing it forward 50% of the time. 00:08:15.06\00:08:18.32 The other 50% of the time is a problem 00:08:18.35\00:08:21.91 and that's one that we'll talk about solutions to 00:08:21.92\00:08:24.72 in the later half of the program. 00:08:24.75\00:08:26.49 MISATTRIBUTION! 00:08:26.50\00:08:27.77 Yeah, misattribution is where you DO have a memory 00:08:27.78\00:08:32.56 that is correct, but there's a WRONG SOURCE 00:08:32.59\00:08:37.16 Or, you don't remember things accurately, 00:08:37.17\00:08:41.49 or you remember them in part. 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.71 And this occurs when you believe a thought 00:08:43.74\00:08:47.96 was totally original with you but in reality, it's not... 00:08:47.99\00:08:52.73 And that's misattribution... that can occur frequently. 00:08:52.74\00:08:57.31 Or plagiarism, you might call it that... That's right 00:08:57.34\00:08:59.98 Unexplainable, or unintentional plagiarism which a writer 00:09:00.01\00:09:05.25 passes off some information as original. 00:09:05.26\00:09:07.17 And the criminal justice system ... this is important 00:09:07.20\00:09:10.60 because misattribution, on the part of an eyewitness 00:09:10.63\00:09:14.09 can lead to the arrest and conviction of 00:09:14.12\00:09:16.17 innocent individuals. 00:09:16.20\00:09:17.77 And, this tends to occur more commonly with aging 00:09:17.80\00:09:21.63 and it is something that can be serious particularly 00:09:21.66\00:09:26.00 when someone... there are many people in prison wrongly, 00:09:26.03\00:09:29.11 due to a memory problem of misattribution. 00:09:29.14\00:09:33.06 Well that's kind of like some of them being reversed 00:09:33.09\00:09:34.83 now with DNA and different things, 00:09:34.86\00:09:36.51 but you hear that that happens every once in a while. Exactly 00:09:36.54\00:09:40.83 SUGGESTIBILITY! 00:09:40.86\00:09:42.48 Yes, suggestibility refers to false memories... 00:09:42.51\00:09:46.15 And this tends to develop because someone gave 00:09:46.18\00:09:51.29 you key information, or a suggestion at the same time 00:09:51.32\00:09:54.90 that you're trying to retrieve a memory... 00:09:54.93\00:09:56.67 with the suggestion fooling your mind into thinking 00:09:56.70\00:10:00.00 it's a real memory. 00:10:00.03\00:10:01.65 And so, this also can occur in the criminal justice system 00:10:01.68\00:10:06.22 because you might have seen someone flee from your car 00:10:06.23\00:10:12.01 that might have been stealing something from your car 00:10:12.04\00:10:15.30 but you didn't get a good look at the thief, 00:10:15.33\00:10:16.96 and another person on the street insisted that this person 00:10:16.99\00:10:20.06 was wearing a green plaid jacket 00:10:20.09\00:10:22.81 And then when the policeman comes to you, 00:10:22.84\00:10:25.29 and gives you a mockup of individuals that may have 00:10:25.32\00:10:29.60 committed this crime, you choose the one with the 00:10:29.63\00:10:32.52 green plaid jacket. 00:10:32.55\00:10:34.14 You didn't see it, but because someone else suggested it 00:10:34.15\00:10:36.88 you THINK that's the person that's there. 00:10:36.91\00:10:39.09 You know, I read a study once that said this happens a lot in 00:10:39.12\00:10:42.10 cases of alleged ABUSE! 00:10:42.13\00:10:44.92 And that's very true. 00:10:44.95\00:10:46.86 Often when a person from the criminal justice system 00:10:46.89\00:10:50.55 is asking a child about sexual abuse, 00:10:50.58\00:10:53.93 they'll actually conjure up just the suggestion 00:10:53.96\00:10:57.44 will make them often conjure up accusations of sexual abuse 00:10:57.47\00:11:01.71 even among family members that never occurred. 00:11:01.74\00:11:05.18 And this can even occur in adults... 00:11:05.21\00:11:08.25 And, in fact, it's well studied out; it's a culprit 00:11:08.28\00:11:13.20 that IS a serious problem. 00:11:13.23\00:11:16.12 And several studies with preschoolers indicate 00:11:16.15\00:11:19.08 that suggestion questioning by the police or other adults 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.95 can lead children to assert that certain events occurred 00:11:21.98\00:11:24.72 when, in fact, they didn't. 00:11:24.75\00:11:26.54 And, you can do this even in a real study-type module 00:11:26.57\00:11:32.09 where you're having someone pose as that 00:11:32.10\00:11:34.11 questioning kids, and they can come up with all sorts of stuff. 00:11:34.14\00:11:38.42 BIAS! 00:11:38.45\00:11:39.45 Bias is the 6th problem... 00:11:39.48\00:11:42.73 and this is a belief that the memory works like a camera 00:11:42.76\00:11:46.91 recording what you learn with complete accuracy 00:11:46.94\00:11:49.54 Of course, that's a myth; we all have biases 00:11:49.57\00:11:52.46 Memory is filtered by personal biases, 00:11:52.49\00:11:54.74 including experiences, beliefs, prior knowledge 00:11:54.75\00:11:57.62 And these factors can influence what information is 00:11:57.65\00:12:00.08 actually called up when an individual attempts to 00:12:00.09\00:12:02.74 recall a memory. 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.36 The most interesting examples are people's recollections 00:12:04.37\00:12:08.55 of their romantic relationships... 00:12:08.58\00:12:11.15 and often bias is involved. 00:12:11.18\00:12:13.46 There was a very neat study where someone interviewed 00:12:13.49\00:12:16.64 couples about their romantic relationship 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.86 when they were starting this relationship, 00:12:18.89\00:12:21.09 and then interviewed them 2 months later. 00:12:21.12\00:12:23.43 Then they asked them to recall what they said 2 months before. 00:12:23.44\00:12:28.10 And what they said, if their relationship was 00:12:28.13\00:12:31.85 starting to turn negative, 00:12:31.88\00:12:33.32 they actually thought that they viewed the relationship 00:12:33.35\00:12:36.44 more negatively 2 months earlier 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.44 And so they said, "Yes, I kind of knew this. I knew that. " 00:12:38.47\00:12:41.82 And if their romantic relationship was 00:12:41.85\00:12:44.21 becoming positive, they actually asserted that 00:12:44.24\00:12:47.23 they believed their romantic relationship was more 00:12:47.24\00:12:49.98 positive and they stated that... 00:12:50.01\00:12:51.52 when, in fact, they didn't. 00:12:51.55\00:12:53.13 And so, in other words, we can even re-write the history 00:12:53.16\00:12:56.41 of how we had viewed things 00:12:56.44\00:12:58.10 based to our developed bias over time. 00:12:58.13\00:13:03.41 Persistence... the last one. 00:13:03.44\00:13:05.54 PERSISTENCE! 00:13:05.57\00:13:06.71 This is memories of traumatic events and negative feelings. 00:13:06.74\00:13:11.81 This can occur with posttraumatic stress disorder 00:13:11.84\00:13:15.84 for instance... where you have a flashback 00:13:15.87\00:13:18.12 You will actually SEE things in your mind's eye 00:13:18.15\00:13:22.84 exactly how they happen. 00:13:22.87\00:13:24.18 You might even smell the smell that occurred at that time 00:13:24.21\00:13:27.94 And, these flashbacks can be traumatic. 00:13:27.97\00:13:31.50 They can be problematic. 00:13:31.53\00:13:32.84 That's not the way we're supposed to store memories 00:13:32.87\00:13:35.65 We're actually supposed to 00:13:35.68\00:13:36.89 store it more in the verbal sense... 00:13:36.92\00:13:39.27 logging it like a journalist 00:13:39.30\00:13:40.80 That's how the hippocampus does it. 00:13:40.83\00:13:42.64 But when the occipital lobe, the back portion of the brain 00:13:42.67\00:13:45.91 gets involved in memory, we can have these flashbacks 00:13:45.92\00:13:48.63 that can be problematic. 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.17 Okay, so just to help us remember before we come back 00:13:51.20\00:13:54.05 to the second half, let's look at them all at once... 00:13:54.08\00:13:56.36 We have transience... up on our graphic all together 00:13:56.39\00:14:00.46 Those are the problems! 00:14:07.09\00:14:08.40 What about some solutions? 00:14:08.44\00:14:09.71 We're going to talk to Dr. Nedley when we come back 00:14:09.72\00:14:11.87 about how to address memory issues 00:14:11.90\00:14:14.06 Join us... if you can remember when we come back! 00:14:14.10\00:14:16.14
