Welcome back! We've been talking with 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 Dr. Neil Nedley from Ardmore, Oklahoma 00:00:02.96\00:00:05.21 and also, now, he is the president of Weimar 00:00:05.24\00:00:09.03 which also has the NEWSTART Program 00:00:09.06\00:00:11.35 We're glad you're with us. Thank you 00:00:11.38\00:00:13.29 We were talking, before the break, about vitamin D 00:00:13.32\00:00:15.78 and you said everybody needs to get that test. Yeah 00:00:15.79\00:00:18.21 And then it occurred to you and I, during the break, 00:00:18.24\00:00:20.96 that maybe we should talk about what a normal 00:00:20.99\00:00:22.75 level for vitamin D is. 00:00:22.78\00:00:24.40 Yes, you know, we talk about cholesterol... 00:00:24.43\00:00:26.71 The ideal cholesterol is 100 + your age 00:00:26.74\00:00:28.89 but vitamin D, people don't know that. 00:00:28.92\00:00:30.83 And for everyone, the ideal vitamin D level is 50 or higher. 00:00:30.86\00:00:34.76 ...50 or higher Yeah 00:00:34.79\00:00:35.91 And now, you don't really want to be above 80 on that 00:00:35.94\00:00:39.33 because too much vitamin D can be a problem. 00:00:39.36\00:00:42.10 That's why we recommend you know what your level is 00:00:42.13\00:00:44.44 and don't just go out and take mega doses. 00:00:44.47\00:00:46.38 It's not like vitamin C where you can take huge doses 00:00:46.39\00:00:49.63 and you really don't have a lot of side effects. 00:00:49.66\00:00:51.75 Vitamin D... you can get side effects if you take mega doses 00:00:51.78\00:00:55.84 So, you really want to know what it is... 00:00:55.85\00:00:57.42 50 and above is great 00:00:57.45\00:00:59.33 Anywhere from 30 to 50 is fair, could be optimized. 00:00:59.36\00:01:04.51 Below 30 is problematic... 00:01:04.54\00:01:06.75 and if you're below 10, WATCH OUT 00:01:06.78\00:01:09.22 ...There are going to be problems facing you soon 00:01:09.25\00:01:12.04 So, of some health-related cause or another it's going to happen 00:01:12.07\00:01:16.05 And so, you really need to know what your vitamin D level is. 00:01:16.08\00:01:19.55 So it's about the same as on the highway... 00:01:19.58\00:01:22.54 They say don't go lower than 45 00:01:22.57\00:01:24.30 and don't go over 70... but 50 to 80 00:01:24.33\00:01:27.44 Okay, that's a good way of remembering it. 00:01:27.47\00:01:29.28 You don't want to be hazardous and get hit by heart disease 00:01:29.32\00:01:32.40 or any of those other diseases... 00:01:32.43\00:01:34.20 so don't go too slow and don't go too fast 00:01:34.23\00:01:36.96 Next study... Bad childhood experiences and drinking 00:01:36.97\00:01:43.07 Yes, and we've underscored this study that was actually 00:01:43.10\00:01:46.83 done by "Emily Rothman" from the 00:01:46.86\00:01:48.77 "Boston University School of Public Health" 00:01:48.80\00:01:51.46 This was published in August 2008 00:01:51.49\00:01:55.13 and it was a study of 3600 Americans, ages 18-39 00:01:55.16\00:02:01.58 And it found that those who had gone through certain 00:02:01.61\00:02:03.95 negative experiences as a child 00:02:03.98\00:02:06.06 were more likely to have started drinking before the age of 15. 00:02:06.09\00:02:10.95 So what were some of those negative experiences? 00:02:10.98\00:02:13.15 Well, it could be sexual abuse... 00:02:13.18\00:02:14.91 It could be living with a mentally-ill family member... 00:02:14.94\00:02:17.68 Substance abuse in the home... 00:02:17.71\00:02:20.58 or parents divorce of separation. 00:02:20.61\00:02:23.32 And obviously, the one that's most common is 00:02:23.35\00:02:26.65 the parental divorce and separation. 00:02:26.68\00:02:29.29 A lot of times, parents are making choices 00:02:29.32\00:02:32.01 to suit themselves in that regard, 00:02:32.04\00:02:34.29 and they don't recognize that their effects 00:02:34.30\00:02:36.67 are manifesting not JUST on themselves, 00:02:36.70\00:02:40.20 but on their own children. 00:02:40.23\00:02:42.25 In fact, I'd like to underscore a couple of things 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.56 in regards to this... 00:02:44.59\00:02:46.08 When a child is not raised by both biological parents, 00:02:46.11\00:02:52.29 they have an emotional hit that increases, 00:02:52.32\00:02:56.49 particularly under the age of 15, 00:02:56.52\00:02:57.97 increases that child's risk of becoming an alcoholic, 00:02:58.00\00:03:01.12 increases their risk of suffering major depression, 00:03:01.15\00:03:04.24 increases their risk of being a problem adolescent significantly 00:03:04.27\00:03:09.36 And it doesn't matter what the reasons are for the divorce... 00:03:09.39\00:03:12.27 If you're not being raised by both biological parents 00:03:12.28\00:03:14.75 under the age of 15, it causes problems. 00:03:14.78\00:03:17.67 And ANOTHER study, interesting recent study, 00:03:17.70\00:03:21.91 showed that 5 years after a divorce... 00:03:21.94\00:03:26.32 many people think that it would have been wise for them 00:03:26.33\00:03:29.96 to stick it out. 00:03:29.99\00:03:31.38 In other words, they're no happier... 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.45 In fact, if you take a randomized sample of people, 00:03:33.48\00:03:36.24 they're going through a divorce, 00:03:36.27\00:03:39.37 and those who are wanting to go through a divorce 00:03:39.40\00:03:41.92 ...but then work it out 00:03:41.95\00:03:43.90 You'll find out the ones who worked it out 00:03:43.93\00:03:46.96 actually are happier than the couples who decided to split. 00:03:46.99\00:03:53.53 And often when they decide to split, 00:03:53.56\00:03:55.07 they think, "Hey, now I've got all these options... 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.40 I've got the plan in place" 00:03:57.43\00:03:58.88 "I'm going to do better this time" 00:03:58.91\00:04:00.86 And, in reality, they don't. 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.06 And so, that's not saying EVERYONE 00:04:03.09\00:04:05.71 should stick it out 100%... 00:04:05.74\00:04:07.77 There are obvious cases where 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.02 separation and divorce need to occur. 00:04:10.06\00:04:12.37 But I would guess that for every 5 divorces, 00:04:12.41\00:04:18.89 4 of them would have been BETTER... by sticking it out 00:04:18.90\00:04:21.77 And only 1 actually was, at the last resort, best option 00:04:21.80\00:04:26.12 Better not only for them, but better for their kids, 00:04:26.15\00:04:28.48 in terms of healthwise... 00:04:28.51\00:04:29.57 MUCH better for their kids. Um hm 00:04:29.58\00:04:31.48 And you know, there's something there... 00:04:31.51\00:04:32.64 when the divorce occurs, there's much greater 00:04:32.65\00:04:35.19 likelihood that the kids aren't going to be supervised 00:04:35.22\00:04:38.52 in certain points. 00:04:38.55\00:04:40.52 And, of course, these other things are also 00:04:40.55\00:04:42.38 associated with lack of supervision... 00:04:42.41\00:04:43.79 If your parent has mental illness, 00:04:43.82\00:04:45.72 that's often associated with lack of supervision. 00:04:45.75\00:04:48.79 If they have substance abuse... 00:04:48.82\00:04:50.36 In other words, if parents are drinking, 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.09 or if they're involved in drugs, 00:04:52.10\00:04:53.78 the chance of those kids being 00:04:53.81\00:04:55.99 problematic are GREATLY increased. 00:04:56.00\00:04:58.51 So stay with your spouse, if at all possible... 00:04:58.54\00:05:03.25 and it will be better for YOU and your KIDS... Absolutely! 00:05:03.28\00:05:05.55 That's what I hear the study saying... 00:05:05.58\00:05:08.02 Published in "Pediatrics" August 2008 00:05:08.06\00:05:10.47 Physical frailty as it relates to dementia... 00:05:10.50\00:05:14.87 YES... and this is a study that just gives a 00:05:14.90\00:05:19.65 note for us to be aware of. 00:05:19.68\00:05:23.15 And that is, a lot of times when we think of 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.21 Alzheimer dementia, when we think of any other 00:05:25.24\00:05:28.95 brain functions going down with age, 00:05:28.98\00:05:31.35 we just think it's often mental... 00:05:31.38\00:05:33.00 and it's not really a physical problem. 00:05:33.03\00:05:35.01 But, it actually does relate as a physical problem. 00:05:35.04\00:05:39.05 And it found... those who are frail, physically, 00:05:39.06\00:05:43.62 it's an early indicator that they are developing the 00:05:43.65\00:05:47.35 plaques associated with Alzheimer disease. 00:05:47.38\00:05:50.45 And these tangles start to occur even before the 00:05:50.48\00:05:55.66 memory goes down. 00:05:55.69\00:05:57.21 And so, first often, there's physical frailty 00:05:57.24\00:06:00.56 and then Alzheimer's 00:06:00.59\00:06:02.16 And so, if you know someone who's aging, 00:06:02.19\00:06:05.52 and they're starting to get frail, 00:06:05.55\00:06:07.23 that's a sign that you may need early... or check them out 00:06:07.26\00:06:12.74 Because if Alzheimer's is diagnosed early, 00:06:12.77\00:06:14.97 there are a lot of things we can do now to help 00:06:15.00\00:06:17.24 slow the progression of Alzheimer disease 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.65 and help this individual out before problems occur. 00:06:19.68\00:06:24.31 This was published in "Neurology," August 2008 00:06:24.32\00:06:29.99 So, if you, or someone you love is getting frail, 00:06:30.02\00:06:33.35 check it out... This is very good helpful, useful information 00:06:33.38\00:06:38.12 Well, let's go to the next one 00:06:38.15\00:06:40.22 STRESS makes allergies last longer... 00:06:40.25\00:06:44.02 And it makes them worse. 00:06:44.05\00:06:45.22 And it makes it worse... Yes 00:06:45.25\00:06:46.52 And this was an interesting study done by 00:06:46.55\00:06:51.41 "Dr. Janice Glaser" 00:06:51.44\00:06:52.85 She's a professor of psychology and psychiatry 00:06:52.88\00:06:55.42 at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio 00:06:55.45\00:06:58.96 And she reported this at the 00:06:58.99\00:07:00.53 "American Psychological Association" meeting 00:07:00.56\00:07:02.78 in August 2008 00:07:02.81\00:07:05.94 And what she found out was that psychological stress and anxiety 00:07:05.97\00:07:10.92 makes seasonal allergies worse and linger longer. 00:07:10.95\00:07:14.53 And so, it's not just the season or not just the pollen, 00:07:14.56\00:07:19.12 but your state of mental health when that pollen comes on board 00:07:19.15\00:07:23.80 ...that has a significant role to play, 00:07:23.83\00:07:25.73 and it may even play a significant enough role 00:07:25.76\00:07:28.83 that if your stress is ably coped with, 00:07:28.86\00:07:33.06 that it can be good as taking an allergy medicine for instance 00:07:33.09\00:07:37.20 Fascinating! 00:07:37.23\00:07:38.81 So decrease stress, and the allergies won't last as long. 00:07:38.84\00:07:44.50 Right, and they won't be as severe. 00:07:44.53\00:07:46.03 Just give us... like what are 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.52 your top 3 ways to decrease stress... 00:07:47.55\00:07:49.93 Top 3 ways of decreasing stress... 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.28 Proper rest is a very important way. 00:07:52.31\00:07:56.62 Regular exercise. 00:07:56.65\00:07:58.45 Exercise helps anxiety. 00:07:58.48\00:08:00.28 It helps stress. 00:08:00.31\00:08:01.79 Physical activity is very important. 00:08:01.82\00:08:04.86 And third, high amounts of omega-3 in the diet. 00:08:04.87\00:08:08.06 And I hesitate to boil it down to 3 because there are 00:08:08.09\00:08:11.00 other important things such as... 00:08:11.03\00:08:12.82 the spiritual aspect of life, 00:08:12.85\00:08:16.06 and having an overall meaning and purpose... 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.09 That's probably more important than the 3 that I mentioned. 00:08:18.12\00:08:20.63 But.. yet, as far as scientific studies are concerned 00:08:20.66\00:08:24.69 the 3 that I mentioned are key. 00:08:24.72\00:08:26.24 By the way, if you do all those 3 things with your kids too 00:08:26.27\00:08:29.45 it decreases their stress, and yours! 00:08:29.48\00:08:31.56 There you go! Absolutely 00:08:31.59\00:08:34.61 What about stroke risk healthy lifestyle, 00:08:34.62\00:08:39.71 and its relation to stroke. 00:08:39.72\00:08:43.42 Well we've know for years that healthy lifestyle is associated 00:08:43.45\00:08:47.32 with reduced heart disease, reduced diabetes. 00:08:47.35\00:08:50.96 In fact, diabetes and heart disease can be controlled 00:08:50.97\00:08:54.83 90% and 80%, respectively, by a very healthy diet. 00:08:54.86\00:09:00.47 And so, critically important, but stroke hasn't really been 00:09:00.50\00:09:03.45 looked at that much. 00:09:03.46\00:09:04.75 And this study showed that a person's odds of suffering 00:09:04.78\00:09:08.67 a stroke is significantly reduced by maintaining 00:09:08.70\00:09:12.47 several healthy lifestyles which include... Not smoking 00:09:12.50\00:09:15.04 Exercising daily. 00:09:16.04\00:09:17.78 Consuming a healthy diet. 00:09:17.81\00:09:19.68 Drinking alcohol either in moderation or not at all. 00:09:19.69\00:09:23.63 And maintaining a healthy weight. 00:09:23.64\00:09:26.51 So, those are 5 factors there 00:09:26.54\00:09:29.85 And if you have all 5 of those factors, 00:09:29.88\00:09:33.01 and you're a woman, your risk of stroke 00:09:33.04\00:09:36.46 went down by 79% WOW, 79% 00:09:36.49\00:09:41.01 And your risk of a clotting stroke went down by 81% 00:09:41.04\00:09:45.49 with those 5 measures. 00:09:45.52\00:09:47.23 Now in men, it wasn't as critical 00:09:47.26\00:09:50.07 It was a 69% reduction in other studies in men 00:09:50.10\00:09:53.47 But this was a "National Institute of Health" 00:09:53.50\00:09:56.38 study... it was funded by the Harvard School of Public Health 00:09:56.41\00:10:00.55 I should say the NIH funded it, 00:10:00.58\00:10:02.79 and the Harvard School of Public Health conducted it 00:10:02.82\00:10:06.19 And it was a study of the "Health Professionals" followup, 00:10:06.20\00:10:11.28 or that "Nurses' Health Study" that we talked about earlier. 00:10:11.31\00:10:15.81 So, what's the 3rd leading cause of death still... 00:10:15.84\00:10:22.30 in America? Stroke? Stroke, yes. 00:10:22.33\00:10:24.62 And really, 69-70% could be 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.94 avoided just by a healthy lifestyle. 00:10:26.98\00:10:28.69 Could be avoided by a healthy lifestyle 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.39 And the exercise was 30 minutes or more a day. 00:10:30.42\00:10:32.98 Maintaining a normal body weight. 00:10:33.01\00:10:35.84 That means a BMI less than 25. 00:10:35.87\00:10:38.25 And if you don't know your BMI, 00:10:38.28\00:10:40.24 I encourage you to get online and find out what it is. 00:10:40.27\00:10:42.92 It's just based on your weight, and height. 00:10:42.95\00:10:44.94 Your BMI really should be between about 19 and 25. 00:10:44.97\00:10:49.08 It turns out taking a multivitamin 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.42 for at least 5 years also reduced the risk slightly. 00:10:51.45\00:10:54.49 And then, of course, the no alcohol, or moderate alcohol 00:10:54.52\00:10:58.62 And then the healthy diet was higher amounts of 00:10:58.65\00:11:01.06 fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes.
