Hello, and welcome to Health for a Lifetime 00:00:50.10\00:00:52.15 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:52.18\00:00:53.58 We're glad you're with us today 00:00:53.61\00:00:55.05 and we're glad Dr. Neil Nedley is with us for today's program 00:00:55.08\00:00:58.67 Welcome Dr. Nedley! 00:00:58.70\00:00:59.89 Thank you! Good to be here 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.16 What kind of a physician are you... what do you do? 00:01:01.19\00:01:03.89 I'm an internal medicine physician 00:01:03.92\00:01:06.03 and that's a specialist of adult diseases of the internal organs. 00:01:06.06\00:01:10.00 And, currently, you're the president of Weimar as well. 00:01:10.03\00:01:14.35 Correct... And you're involved with the 00:01:14.38\00:01:15.70 health and wellness programs there, the New Start Program 00:01:15.73\00:01:18.46 all those different things. That's right 00:01:18.49\00:01:20.09 Well, we're glad you're with us today. 00:01:20.12\00:01:23.27 You always are up-to-date on research! 00:01:23.28\00:01:26.65 You have a website drnedley. com 00:01:26.68\00:01:29.37 People can go there and get some of the notes from today probably 00:01:29.40\00:01:32.70 You have it all archived... all the newest research, right? 00:01:32.73\00:01:35.96 Yes, the Nedley Health Report. 00:01:35.99\00:01:40.12 We're just going to look at some of these studies that are 00:01:40.13\00:01:42.37 exciting... they're interesting and I hope very useful. 00:01:42.40\00:01:45.46 The first one, "Healthy Eating May Extend 00:01:45.49\00:01:48.82 Someone's Life... a Woman's Life" 00:01:48.85\00:01:51.03 Yes, this was the Harvard Study 72,000 U.S. women, 00:01:51.06\00:01:56.47 actually over 72,000... To be exact 72,113 women 00:01:56.50\00:02:02.57 enrolled in the "Nurses Health Study" 00:02:02.60\00:02:04.44 They have been a study group since 1976 00:02:04.47\00:02:07.93 and more and more information starts coming out 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.27 about this group. Um hm 00:02:10.30\00:02:11.90 What they took a look at are the women who had 00:02:11.93\00:02:15.30 4 different foods that were eaten at higher amounts 00:02:15.33\00:02:20.30 So this isn't lowering food intake necessarily 00:02:20.33\00:02:24.14 But it's raising the intake of 4 different foods... 00:02:24.15\00:02:28.00 Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains. 00:02:28.03\00:02:32.76 Did that increase life? Let me guess... 00:02:32.79\00:02:35.80 It did... It increased life. 00:02:35.83\00:02:38.99 Even though they may have still been eating meat actually 00:02:39.02\00:02:42.78 Now what they found out is that statistical association... 00:02:42.79\00:02:46.49 People who eat more of those 4 food groups 00:02:46.52\00:02:49.04 have a tendency to eat LESS meat. Okay 00:02:49.07\00:02:52.21 So they noticed that tendency in these women as well. 00:02:52.24\00:02:54.76 What were the 4 again? 00:02:54.79\00:02:55.86 Fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. 00:02:55.87\00:03:03.07 If you eat those, you're going to live longer... 00:03:03.10\00:03:05.78 You will live longer. 00:03:05.79\00:03:07.58 And it's true also, we believe in men, 00:03:07.59\00:03:10.62 but this is a women's health study. 00:03:10.65\00:03:12.55 It was just published in 2008 in June. 00:03:12.58\00:03:15.01 It was actually published by the 00:03:15.02\00:03:17.01 "Journal of the American Heart Association" 00:03:17.04\00:03:18.88 which is the journal's circulation 00:03:18.91\00:03:21.26 And "Dr. Christin Heidemann," who was at Harvard at the time; 00:03:21.29\00:03:25.48 now she's at the "German Institute of Human Nutrition" 00:03:25.51\00:03:28.01 in Germany, said that it was rather significant 00:03:28.04\00:03:32.55 ...the difference in longevity that took place 00:03:32.56\00:03:36.26 And those who ate more meat, had a 22% higher risk of death 00:03:36.29\00:03:41.13 Those who ate more of these foods 16% less likely to 00:03:41.16\00:03:46.62 die of cancer, and well over 20% less likely to die 00:03:46.65\00:03:50.16 of heart disease. 00:03:50.19\00:03:51.53 Now I should add my parenthetical 00:03:51.56\00:03:53.22 note to that statement... 00:03:53.26\00:03:54.42 It's not as GOOD as if you are a plant-based vegetarian. 00:03:54.46\00:03:58.03 In other words, if you go ALL the way... 00:03:58.06\00:04:00.99 you get much greater benefits. 00:04:01.02\00:04:03.22 But this kind of goes along with my "good, better, best approach" 00:04:03.25\00:04:07.09 The BEST approach would really be a healthy plant-based 00:04:07.12\00:04:10.23 vegetarian diet... 00:04:10.26\00:04:11.97 And the next best approach which would really be a 00:04:12.00\00:04:17.61 GOOD approach is increasing those 4 food groups 00:04:17.64\00:04:20.45 and then just decreasing the amount of red meat consumed 00:04:20.48\00:04:23.20 And you may want to start out that way 00:04:23.23\00:04:24.64 and you'll still get some benefit as this 00:04:24.67\00:04:27.04 study illustrates. 00:04:27.07\00:04:28.52 So FRUITS, VEGETABLES, GRAINS, AND... 00:04:28.55\00:04:33.15 what was the 4th one? Beans... BEANS! Yes. 00:04:33.18\00:04:37.02 And it's not just grains... WHOLE grains... whole grains! 00:04:37.05\00:04:39.49 This same study and a previous study done on the 72,000 nurses 00:04:39.52\00:04:43.38 showed those who eat WHITE grains... 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.91 In other words, refined grains Don't do so well 00:04:45.94\00:04:48.11 Yeah, right... they actually lived less... less years. 00:04:48.14\00:04:54.09 And so, it's not just grains. 00:04:54.12\00:04:56.10 It's the whole grains... that are important. 00:04:56.13\00:04:58.02 Well, let's move on to the next study... 00:04:58.05\00:05:00.67 Amphetamine use and risk of death. 00:05:00.70\00:05:03.42 YES, and this is highlighted... 00:05:03.45\00:05:06.50 The reason why I brought it forward is 00:05:06.53\00:05:07.97 I just had a patient in the last 2 weeks, who was a young person 00:05:08.00\00:05:12.87 ...28 years old coming in with a pretty significant heart attack. 00:05:12.88\00:05:16.45 Lost quite a bit of muscle, severe chest pain, and 00:05:16.46\00:05:20.96 28 YEARS OLD? ... 28 years old 00:05:20.99\00:05:23.53 Wow, that's pretty young! 00:05:23.56\00:05:24.69 Yeah, it got my attention. 00:05:24.72\00:05:26.05 She was thin, young, beautiful, didn't look at all like a person 00:05:26.08\00:05:31.26 who should be having a heart attack. 00:05:31.29\00:05:32.77 And we checked her urine, and found out that she had 00:05:32.80\00:05:36.84 "speed" on board... what we call "amphetamines" 00:05:36.85\00:05:39.83 And then, on further questioning 00:05:39.86\00:05:41.74 she was using it recreationally 00:05:41.77\00:05:45.47 ...in other words, doing it in order to try and get high 00:05:45.50\00:05:48.60 and it was in the midst of that that she ended up having 00:05:48.63\00:05:52.83 that crushing chest pain 00:05:52.86\00:05:54.92 So amphetamines... what this study shows 00:05:54.95\00:05:58.06 ...It was actually a study published in June 2008 00:05:58.09\00:06:03.22 It was published actually, I'm sorry, July issue... 00:06:03.25\00:06:06.95 "The Drug and Alcohol Dependence Journal" 00:06:06.98\00:06:10.37 And actually showing very clearly 00:06:10.40\00:06:14.16 that 18- to 44-year-olds that were hospitalized, 00:06:14.19\00:06:19.82 3 million of them, were hospitalized 00:06:19.85\00:06:22.47 between 2000 and 2003... 00:06:22.50\00:06:25.78 For doing meth, methamphetamine amphetamines 00:06:25.79\00:06:28.32 And those who were abusing amphetamines 61% more likely 00:06:28.35\00:06:32.56 than nonusers to be treated for a heart attack 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.38 Wow, 61% And what this does is 00:06:35.41\00:06:38.37 it actually raises blood pressure, increases heart rate 00:06:38.40\00:06:41.23 You know, you get that adrenalin-type of effect, 00:06:41.26\00:06:44.15 but on top of that, it can cause spasm to the arteries... 00:06:44.18\00:06:47.11 And if you already have a plaque there... 00:06:47.14\00:06:49.11 due to cholesterol and calcium coming on board, 00:06:49.14\00:06:51.52 there's a much greater likelihood of that 00:06:51.55\00:06:53.28 plaque rupturing, and when it ruptures 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.75 the platelets come and close the vessel off. 00:06:55.76\00:06:58.17 And so, amphetamine is a significant risk 00:06:58.20\00:07:01.44 And it really is an additional reason not to be using them 00:07:01.47\00:07:06.45 Yeah, now what if someone is using them? 00:07:06.46\00:07:08.92 It's pretty hard to get off.. they may need to 00:07:08.96\00:07:10.38 go somewhere and get some help. 00:07:10.41\00:07:11.54 They may need to go somewhere and get some help 00:07:11.57\00:07:13.81 ...Go to a drug rehab 00:07:13.84\00:07:16.28 Amphetamines actually are easier to get off of than say... 00:07:16.31\00:07:20.94 narcotics... You know, the heroines and even Lortab, 00:07:20.97\00:07:26.93 and those types of things are actually tougher to get off of. 00:07:26.96\00:07:30.12 Amphetamines, it just a matter of making up your mind 00:07:30.15\00:07:33.09 that you are going to find other ways of finding 00:07:33.12\00:07:35.97 enjoyment in life... 00:07:36.00\00:07:37.27 And putting that aside, and then trying to get natural highs 00:07:37.30\00:07:42.90 ...that are much healthier and you don't have the 00:07:42.91\00:07:46.11 deprivation period afterwards. 00:07:46.14\00:07:48.30 So it's much more psychological health that's needed 00:07:48.33\00:07:51.70 than actually dangerous withdrawal. 00:07:51.73\00:07:55.85 You don't undergo dangerous withdrawal by stopping speed, 00:07:55.86\00:07:59.42 or even stopping cocaine for that matter. 00:07:59.45\00:08:01.61 So get help if you need it on that... 00:08:01.64\00:08:05.26 Don't keep down the path... 00:08:05.29\00:08:07.75 there is help and there is hope there. 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.30 We want to go on to stress as it relates to pregnancy! 00:08:10.33\00:08:15.04 Yes! And stress is not very good in pregnancy. 00:08:15.07\00:08:20.12 What happens is... it releases a number of hormones 00:08:20.13\00:08:24.58 And the end result, according to this study done 00:08:24.61\00:08:28.39 among 19,000 Danish women over a 10-year period 00:08:28.42\00:08:32.48 Big study! Big study... 00:08:32.51\00:08:34.63 Those who had high psychological stress... 80% more likely to 00:08:34.66\00:08:38.80 suffer stillbirth, than women with low stress levels 00:08:38.83\00:08:42.21 Wow, 80% more... 00:08:42.24\00:08:43.58 Yeah, and they think that's actually due to the circulation 00:08:43.61\00:08:46.40 going to the placenta, and the hormone's effect 00:08:46.43\00:08:49.79 And what they asked them about 00:08:49.82\00:08:51.60 was their stress in the past month 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.98 For instance, how often they felt unhappy, 00:08:54.01\00:08:56.39 how often they were worried, 00:08:56.42\00:08:57.88 how often they were unable to deal with their problems... 00:08:57.91\00:09:00.83 Of course, that tended to occur in more single women, 00:09:00.84\00:09:03.96 than married women. 00:09:03.99\00:09:05.39 And so, being single and having a child is a big red flag 00:09:05.42\00:09:09.37 because your stress levels tend to be higher 00:09:09.40\00:09:11.90 than if you're married, and undergoing this. 00:09:11.91\00:09:15.36 But they also factor that out and took a look at just 00:09:15.39\00:09:19.30 single women alone... the stillbirth rate was 00:09:19.33\00:09:21.65 a little higher in single women. 00:09:21.68\00:09:23.52 But the factor that seemed to be most related was 00:09:23.55\00:09:26.15 the stress level. 00:09:26.18\00:09:27.97 And this is a study, of course, over in Scandinavia, 00:09:27.98\00:09:30.75 which is known many times for a lot of seasonal affective 00:09:30.78\00:09:34.96 or in other words, season-related depression. 00:09:34.97\00:09:38.31 That's right... because they don't get a lot of 00:09:38.34\00:09:41.04 sun in the wintertime.
