Have you been looking forward to retirement... 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 or is someone you know looking forward to retirement? 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.78 And you say... "Oh, if I could just retire and stop working!" 00:00:04.81\00:00:09.01 Well, we're talking with Dr. Neil Nedley 00:00:09.02\00:00:10.63 We're looking at current research... 00:00:10.66\00:00:12.40 And, Dr. Nedley you've got an interesting study here for us 00:00:12.43\00:00:15.82 Yes, this was a study done on 17,000 adults, 00:00:15.85\00:00:20.23 so this is a huge study. 00:00:20.26\00:00:21.47 Whenever you see a study in the thousands, that's huge. 00:00:21.50\00:00:25.11 17,000! And when you get over 10,000, 00:00:25.14\00:00:27.41 that's very huge! Um hm... 00:00:27.44\00:00:29.52 And so this was 17,000 adults. 00:00:29.55\00:00:32.04 And what they looked at particularly 00:00:32.07\00:00:34.16 were their retirement, and then how long they lived 00:00:34.19\00:00:39.70 after their retirement. 00:00:39.73\00:00:41.58 And what they found out was that those who retired 00:00:41.61\00:00:45.84 in their 40s and 50s, in particular... 00:00:45.87\00:00:49.31 If they retired, and they were compared with people who 00:00:49.34\00:00:52.55 chose not to retire, but could continue to work 00:00:52.58\00:00:55.06 through their 40s and 50s, 00:00:55.09\00:00:56.99 they actually had twice the risk of death within the study period 00:00:57.02\00:01:02.93 TWICE THE RISK! Twice the risk of death... Wow 00:01:02.96\00:01:05.44 And so, you know, often we talk about how sad it is... 00:01:05.47\00:01:08.93 He just retired... you know, it's just been a year, 00:01:08.96\00:01:12.00 or 1-1/2 to 2 years, and he JUST retired! 00:01:12.03\00:01:15.40 But my thought is, based on that study, is we should ask... 00:01:15.43\00:01:19.21 "I wonder if he'd still be alive if he didn't retire" 00:01:19.24\00:01:22.69 Well you know, you remember that Commandment right in the middle 00:01:22.72\00:01:26.57 of the 10 Commandments that says... 00:01:26.58\00:01:27.98 "Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work. " 00:01:28.02\00:01:30.36 I mean, if you retire, are you breaking that Commandment? 00:01:30.39\00:01:33.20 You know, it's kind of interesting... 00:01:33.23\00:01:35.18 it doesn't have an age limit on it, does it? 00:01:35.21\00:01:37.23 I mean it doesn't! It doesn't say until you're 59-1/2 00:01:37.26\00:01:41.61 Now to be fair, you know, some people that retire 00:01:41.64\00:01:43.77 actually work harder after they retire, than before 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.91 ...Because they're able to go into mission work. 00:01:45.92\00:01:48.53 They're able to go... We're not talking about that. 00:01:48.56\00:01:50.66 We're talking about people that just say, in this study, 00:01:50.69\00:01:53.07 Am I right or wrong... 00:01:53.10\00:01:54.21 They say, "Okay, I'm not doing anything. " 00:01:54.24\00:01:56.60 Well, they were not having a gainful source of income here, 00:01:56.63\00:02:01.91 and so, it was looking at those 00:02:01.92\00:02:05.01 And, of course, this was a worldly study, 00:02:05.04\00:02:07.22 so, you know, there probably weren't very many 00:02:07.25\00:02:10.06 of the 17,000 that went into mission work. 00:02:10.07\00:02:12.57 That would be another study to look at it... Okay 00:02:12.58\00:02:15.27 But, basically, it was those who were not gainfully employed 00:02:15.30\00:02:19.10 on a fulltime basis, and it actually increased their risk 00:02:19.11\00:02:24.42 of death significantly, and this was published 00:02:24.43\00:02:26.46 in the "American Journal of Epidemiology" 00:02:26.49\00:02:29.29 Wow, it's a very reputable journal... 00:02:29.32\00:02:31.12 A very prestigious journal, and it was done 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.22 by "Christina Bamia from the University of Athens" 00:02:33.25\00:02:37.80 Okay, so DON'T RETIRE! 00:02:37.83\00:02:39.63 Now, another thing, we want to talk about is rock stars 00:02:39.66\00:02:45.09 Now, how many of you watching today look up to a rock star? 00:02:45.12\00:02:48.34 ...Want to be like one? 00:02:48.37\00:02:49.68 I don't know... or maybe you know someone who is 00:02:49.71\00:02:51.76 looking up to maybe a musical icon... 00:02:51.79\00:02:55.21 Or watching some kind of show where they 00:02:55.24\00:02:58.06 idolize these types of folks. 00:02:58.09\00:03:00.14 This is a fascinating study. 00:03:00.17\00:03:01.63 Yeah, it was done on 1,064 rock stars. 00:03:01.66\00:03:06.24 Okay, they studied the rock stars. 00:03:06.27\00:03:07.66 The rock stars from Europe, and North America 00:03:07.69\00:03:10.51 were studied. 00:03:10.54\00:03:11.62 So Canada, U.S., Great Britain primarily... 00:03:11.65\00:03:15.91 I mean all 3 of those primarily, I should say, 00:03:15.94\00:03:19.52 more so than the other European countries. 00:03:19.53\00:03:21.62 And what they found out was that the risk of death 00:03:21.65\00:03:26.00 ...early, premature death is dramatically higher 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.54 in the rock star world. 00:03:29.57\00:03:32.34 I guess it doesn't really surprise me 00:03:32.37\00:03:34.95 ...You think about Elvis Presley 00:03:34.98\00:03:36.24 you think about some of the Beatles, 00:03:36.27\00:03:40.12 you think about Morrison, and Coban... 00:03:40.16\00:03:42.98 all these different names and different people, 00:03:43.01\00:03:44.72 different singers... They're either committing suicide 00:03:44.75\00:03:47.19 they get killed, or something happens to them 00:03:47.22\00:03:49.24 They overdose on drugs... 00:03:49.27\00:03:52.05 Yes, in fact, they actually looked at the causes of death 00:03:52.06\00:03:55.36 and they found out that many of the deaths were drug 00:03:55.39\00:04:01.03 or alcohol-related. 00:04:01.04\00:04:02.44 In fact, one-fourth of them who died prematurely, 00:04:02.47\00:04:06.09 died simply due to alcohol abuse, or drug abuse. 00:04:06.12\00:04:10.12 And, this is significantly higher than the 00:04:10.15\00:04:12.61 general population... 00:04:12.64\00:04:13.80 I mean, way off the scale, in comparison to the 00:04:13.83\00:04:16.81 general population and their percentage of deaths. 00:04:16.84\00:04:20.01 So, you know, I notice in the study, as well, 00:04:20.04\00:04:22.06 that it's VERY dangerous to get successful as a rock star. 00:04:22.09\00:04:26.55 Yes, in fact, out of these 1,064 people, 00:04:26.58\00:04:31.41 I'm sure you probably only heard of maybe 20 or 30 of them. 00:04:31.44\00:04:34.21 Some of them weren't as successful... 00:04:34.24\00:04:37.32 And even if you were unsuccessful 00:04:37.33\00:04:39.24 in the rock business... 00:04:39.27\00:04:41.29 You know, you published your first CD, 00:04:41.32\00:04:43.18 and you never published again. 00:04:43.21\00:04:45.42 You still had a significantly higher risk of death. 00:04:45.45\00:04:48.10 So there's something about the ROCK world 00:04:48.13\00:04:51.14 ...we know in the performance aspect of things 00:04:51.17\00:04:55.40 that is brought out in the study ... that is not healthy 00:04:55.43\00:04:57.77 for the physique and we know from other studies 00:04:57.80\00:05:01.30 it's not healthy for the mind... 00:05:01.33\00:05:02.53 But, particularly those who are very successful, 00:05:02.56\00:05:06.19 the question is... Well, if you're very successful, 00:05:06.22\00:05:08.06 if you make lots of money, maybe you're in a higher 00:05:08.09\00:05:10.01 socioeconomic group, 00:05:10.04\00:05:11.34 and so maybe you have a higher motivation to stay alive 00:05:11.37\00:05:15.49 and to be healthy, etc. 00:05:15.52\00:05:17.31 But those people, at the time that they reach their fame, 00:05:17.34\00:05:20.91 they had a dramatic increase risk of death within 3 years 00:05:20.94\00:05:24.22 of becoming famous. 00:05:24.25\00:05:25.62 Well, there you have it! 00:05:25.65\00:05:27.18 Do NOT become famous and do NOT become a rock star! Right? 00:05:27.21\00:05:31.25 Now, you mentioned something interesting to me as well... 00:05:31.28\00:05:34.13 is that, maybe you can tell us where that study is to, 00:05:34.16\00:05:38.26 but you mentioned that being an orchestra conductor, 00:05:38.29\00:05:41.05 there have been studies showing you live very long doing that 00:05:41.08\00:05:44.62 Yes, that's actually a separate study... 00:05:44.65\00:05:46.61 that wasn't part of the study done by "Mark Bellis" 00:05:46.64\00:05:50.45 Mark Bellis was the lead researcher, and this was done 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.47 by the "Center for Public Health at Liverpool University. " 00:05:53.50\00:05:57.38 That was where the study was done. 00:05:57.41\00:05:59.76 In England? In England, right. 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.76 That's where the Beatles were from... That's right 00:06:01.79\00:06:03.44 Yeah, it was actually from their town... 00:06:03.47\00:06:05.46 And, of course, many people studying this were thinking 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.23 it was a myth that rock stars died early 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.09 Maybe we just heard about the ones who died... 00:06:10.12\00:06:12.77 And so that's why they did the study to see 00:06:12.80\00:06:16.11 if it was a myth or not, and they found out it isn't a myth 00:06:16.14\00:06:18.53 And indeed is very statistically significant that you're going to 00:06:18.56\00:06:22.82 tend to die prematurely. 00:06:22.85\00:06:24.35 But, yes, other studies have shown that if you are in the 00:06:24.38\00:06:27.37 classical music world, you have longer life... 00:06:27.40\00:06:30.58 And if you are an orchestra conductor, 00:06:30.61\00:06:32.09 you have significantly long life. 00:06:32.12\00:06:34.35 In fact, your chance of successfully aging into your 90s 00:06:34.38\00:06:38.00 and still being active is much HIGHER if you're a 00:06:38.03\00:06:43.84 symphony orchestra conductor. Hmm 00:06:43.87\00:06:45.98 Well, maybe that's what I should go into. 00:06:45.99\00:06:51.69 Let's move to our next study... 00:06:51.72\00:06:52.71 Social ties and memory loss. 00:06:52.74\00:06:56.44 Before we go into the next study 00:06:56.47\00:06:58.58 I just need to quote something else that was mentioned 00:06:58.61\00:07:00.67 in this study, and that was... 00:07:00.68\00:07:03.06 a rock song that was written back in the 60s, from "The Who," 00:07:03.09\00:07:09.22 and it was "I hope I die before I get old" 00:07:09.25\00:07:14.23 And of course, a self-fulfilling prophecy in the rock world 00:07:14.26\00:07:18.26 But I've met so many people as patients, even... 00:07:18.29\00:07:20.65 that tell me, "Dr. Nedley, if I knew I was going to live 00:07:20.66\00:07:23.64 this long, I would have taken better care of myself. " 00:07:23.67\00:07:26.24 In other words, the time to make changes, as far as our 00:07:26.25\00:07:31.71 choice of music... as far as our choice of lifestyle 00:07:31.74\00:07:34.94 is the time when it can benefit us the most. 00:07:34.97\00:07:37.39 And the time to do that is the younger, the better. 00:07:37.42\00:07:40.47 And the younger we are and make these changes, 00:07:40.50\00:07:43.93 the more positive and abundant life we'll live. 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.65 Social ties and memory loss in the aged... 00:07:46.68\00:07:50.17 another study you want to talk about. 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.80 YES! This is a study, of course we're always looking at 00:07:51.83\00:07:55.62 the people that retain their memory when they get old. 00:07:55.65\00:08:00.10 And there are people that can retain their memory 00:08:00.11\00:08:03.53 after the age of 85, and still be very sharp... 00:08:03.56\00:08:06.41 Still have a good working memory, 00:08:06.44\00:08:08.68 and still can have a good recent memory, 00:08:08.71\00:08:10.44 and not just things of the past. 00:08:10.47\00:08:11.55 Many people over age 85, they just, you know, talk about 00:08:11.58\00:08:15.37 the past, and they can remember things of the past, 00:08:15.40\00:08:18.37 but recently, they can't. 00:08:18.40\00:08:20.01 And what they found out, was that it was directly 00:08:20.04\00:08:22.54 related to staying connected with family and friends. 00:08:22.57\00:08:26.73 You remember better if you have 00:08:26.76\00:08:28.70 more family and friends that you're close to. 00:08:28.73\00:08:31.84 Yes, and this was "Dr. Lisa Berkman" 00:08:31.87\00:08:32.90 and she is from Harvard University there 00:08:32.91\00:08:36.66 in Boston 00:08:36.69\00:08:38.36 And this was published in the 00:08:38.39\00:08:39.48 "American Journal of Public Health" 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.97 And it showed memory among those LEAST socially integrated 00:08:42.00\00:08:45.83 declined at twice the rate as among the MOST 00:08:45.84\00:08:48.81 socially integrated. 00:08:48.84\00:08:50.46 Bringing in the highest level of social integration 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.81 ameliorated more than half of the age-related decline 00:08:52.84\00:08:56.28 in memory. 00:08:56.31\00:08:57.49 This was published in May 2008 00:08:57.52\00:09:00.08 and, again, it shows how we were created to be social beings 00:09:00.11\00:09:04.96 Huge study too... about 15,000 people, I think... Yes 00:09:04.99\00:09:08.73 A large study, and this may be even more important 00:09:08.76\00:09:12.09 than the vitamins you're choosing 00:09:12.12\00:09:14.26 to consume to help your memory. 00:09:14.30\00:09:15.41 So, love the Lord with all your heart, AND you neighbor 00:09:15.44\00:09:17.67 as yourself... is really good advice. 00:09:17.70\00:09:19.24 Absolutely! Wow, fascinating. 00:09:19.25\00:09:21.27 So if you want to remember something... 00:09:21.30\00:09:22.94 have some friends! Remember that! 00:09:22.97\00:09:26.40 Yes, and really, there are other studies that 00:09:26.43\00:09:28.80 look at closeness of friends... 00:09:28.83\00:09:30.55 You know, if you look around in your own life, 00:09:30.58\00:09:34.30 and you don't have 5 close friends, 00:09:34.33\00:09:36.90 now this isn't family, these are close friends 00:09:36.93\00:09:39.89 that you can almost bare your soul to, 00:09:39.92\00:09:43.15 and you can really have... 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.50 you know, it helps you... it helps them, 00:09:45.51\00:09:49.28 it's really part of a good nonsexually intimate 00:09:49.31\00:09:55.71 but socially intimate type of friends 00:09:55.74\00:09:58.39 If you have more than 5, it's a GREAT health booster, 00:09:58.42\00:10:01.73 AND a GREAT mind booster! Fascinating. 00:10:01.76\00:10:05.47 Well, moving on... we've got to move on from 00:10:05.50\00:10:08.78 friends and memory to BROCCOLI! 00:10:08.81\00:10:12.12 Broccoli... who would have thought! 00:10:12.15\00:10:13.17 Broccoli after memory! Yes! 00:10:13.20\00:10:14.37 Tell us a little bit about broccoli. 00:10:14.40\00:10:15.84 All right! Well, this was a study 00:10:15.87\00:10:18.43 that actually shows how broccoli fights cancer. That's good news! 00:10:18.46\00:10:23.14 And, we do have a graphic in regards to the broccoli. 00:10:23.17\00:10:27.64 This study was done by "Richard Milton"... 00:10:27.67\00:10:31.15 He's a biologist at "Britain's Institute of Food Research" 00:10:31.18\00:10:36.57 And, it wasn't just broccoli, 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.43 the study highlighted broccoli but you can also see 00:10:38.46\00:10:42.60 in that picture cabbage. 00:10:42.63\00:10:44.45 Cabbage is part of the compounds that actually fight cancer. 00:10:44.48\00:10:50.30 And other foods that are not shown in the picture 00:10:50.31\00:10:53.78 that also helped out were brussel sprouts, 00:10:53.79\00:10:56.21 cauliflower, cabbage, watercress... 00:10:56.24\00:11:00.52 These are foods that we call the cruciferous vegetables. 00:11:00.55\00:11:04.19 And the cruciferous vegetables, we have known, have 00:11:04.22\00:11:07.31 reduced the risk of a number of cancers... 00:11:07.34\00:11:10.13 particularly colon cancer. 00:11:10.16\00:11:12.26 But this was a study taking a look at those who had 00:11:12.29\00:11:15.19 prostate cancer. 00:11:15.22\00:11:16.73 Now many people with prostate cancer... there's a score. 00:11:16.76\00:11:21.42 If you have prostate cancer, be sure and get a score. 00:11:21.43\00:11:24.24 Find out what your Gleason score is. 00:11:24.27\00:11:26.19 If you're 6 or below, the doctor will give you an option 00:11:26.22\00:11:30.31 to not get treatment. 00:11:30.34\00:11:31.40 In other words, the chance of this spreading fast 00:11:31.43\00:11:33.96 is very, very slim, and he might just re-biopsy you. 00:11:33.99\00:11:37.43 And so this took people with low Gleason scores... 00:11:37.46\00:11:41.10 almost the precancerous lesions and it put them on broccoli 00:11:41.13\00:11:44.23 and then it measured their genes. 00:11:44.26\00:11:46.19 And it found out that over 100 genes that are 00:11:46.22\00:11:49.96 associated with cancer, were turned off, 00:11:49.99\00:11:52.20 and another 100 genes that are associated with a reduction 00:11:52.23\00:11:55.59 of cancer were turned on by increasing the amount 00:11:55.62\00:11:59.41 of cruciferous vegetables that they were consuming 00:11:59.44\00:12:02.14 by 4 per week. 00:12:02.17\00:12:04.43 So that's not very much. That's right. 00:12:04.46\00:12:06.74 Just a few more... Just a few more! 00:12:06.77\00:12:09.24 ...4 vegetables Now what's the serving? 00:12:09.25\00:12:10.96 Is that like 2 platefuls, or is that like 3... 00:12:10.99\00:12:14.80 It's a cup. It's a cup... Okay 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.40 So, 4 cups or more of these cruciferous vegetables 00:12:17.43\00:12:21.70 were enough to change the genetics 00:12:21.73\00:12:23.69 and, actually, it reduced the risk of the prostate cancer 00:12:23.72\00:12:26.72 progressing, or the precancerous lesions 00:12:26.75\00:12:28.66 going into prostate cancer. 00:12:28.70\00:12:30.17 And I suppose that if it's good for the prostate, 00:12:30.20\00:12:32.65 it's probably good for other parts of the body as well. 00:12:32.68\00:12:35.15 Yeah, absolutely! 00:12:35.19\00:12:36.24 And, in fact, we know that from other studies, 00:12:36.27\00:12:39.48 that cruciferous vegetables do avoid a number of cancers 00:12:39.51\00:12:42.83 And in this study, they took a look at 00:12:42.86\00:12:44.83 "isothiocyanate and sulforaphane" 00:12:44.86\00:12:48.36 Those are 2 chemicals in the cruciferous vegetables 00:12:48.39\00:12:50.94 that do have potent genetic effects. 00:12:50.97\00:12:53.16 Well, I think...
