Welcome back. 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 We're talking with Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.24 We're talking about really a whole bunch of things, 00:00:04.25\00:00:06.35 but the last thing you mentioned 00:00:06.36\00:00:07.70 was fascinating to me and that is that 00:00:07.71\00:00:10.20 food needs to taste good. 00:00:10.21\00:00:11.81 It's kind of a misnomer when someone says. 00:00:11.82\00:00:15.00 In another words it's not right when they say. 00:00:15.01\00:00:17.25 Well, the reason I overweight is because 00:00:17.26\00:00:20.35 I just really enjoy my food really, 00:00:20.36\00:00:22.23 if your study is correct it maybe 00:00:22.24\00:00:23.72 that they are not enjoying their foods, 00:00:23.73\00:00:25.28 that's why they are overweight. 00:00:25.29\00:00:26.26 They are not enjoying it as much, 00:00:26.27\00:00:28.22 and they need more flavor in the food. 00:00:28.23\00:00:30.58 In fact that the study what I didn't point out 00:00:30.59\00:00:33.06 in that study is it showed when the flavor 00:00:33.07\00:00:35.78 was increased people actually lost weight. 00:00:35.79\00:00:39.17 They lost 35 pounds in a year 00:00:39.18\00:00:41.55 by improving the flavor of the food. 00:00:41.56\00:00:44.51 So some of these places you go where it's just 00:00:44.52\00:00:46.89 fast food and it's and it's what not the, 00:00:46.90\00:00:50.29 it's a blend thing and they just eat 00:00:50.30\00:00:52.17 bunch of it full of void, but it's not something 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.95 they jus savoring every bite, the better the food, 00:00:54.96\00:00:58.77 the more they slowdown and enjoy it. 00:00:58.78\00:01:01.66 That's part of it as well. 00:01:01.67\00:01:03.00 You know, it's also misnomer to think 00:01:03.01\00:01:04.59 that thin people don't enjoy food. 00:01:04.60\00:01:06.65 If you watch thin people eat, 00:01:06.66\00:01:09.49 they often be thoroughly enjoying their food. 00:01:09.50\00:01:12.31 And if you watch obese people eat, 00:01:12.32\00:01:14.02 sometimes you look at them and you realize 00:01:14.03\00:01:17.00 where is the enjoyment here, you know, what's you know, 00:01:17.01\00:01:20.55 why are they continuing to do this, 00:01:20.56\00:01:22.34 but they continue to actually eat more than 00:01:22.35\00:01:25.39 they should often due to the fact that the food 00:01:25.40\00:01:28.57 that they are eating is really not 00:01:28.58\00:01:31.33 is flavorful as it should be. 00:01:31.34\00:01:33.76 And so you know, unfortunately McDonalds 00:01:33.77\00:01:35.90 scores lows is not just on health 00:01:35.91\00:01:37.78 but on flavor as well. 00:01:37.79\00:01:40.46 Interesting. Well, let's go on, 00:01:40.47\00:01:42.22 there is another interesting story, 00:01:42.23\00:01:43.42 this time with heat exhaustion. 00:01:43.43\00:01:46.02 Is it, is it problem in America, 00:01:46.03\00:01:47.87 is something that, how can we know 00:01:47.88\00:01:49.76 when we're experiencing that. 00:01:49.77\00:01:51.28 What can we do to avoid it? 00:01:51.29\00:01:52.69 What are the ramification, 00:01:52.70\00:01:53.97 what are the potential problems? 00:01:53.98\00:01:56.00 Every year in the spring, summer, rainfall 00:01:56.01\00:01:58.19 they are significant problems that occur 00:01:58.20\00:02:01.31 with certain Americans as the result 00:02:01.32\00:02:03.83 of heat exhaustion and also it going to heat stroke. 00:02:03.84\00:02:08.02 Heat exhaustion Don is the most common 00:02:08.03\00:02:10.24 type of heat related ailment and tends to occur 00:02:10.25\00:02:13.41 in those that exercise. 00:02:13.42\00:02:16.06 And it occurs when a person looses too much fluid 00:02:16.07\00:02:19.18 or too much sodium in the heat. 00:02:19.19\00:02:23.37 Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, 00:02:23.38\00:02:26.30 loss of coordination, pale skin, profuse sweating, 00:02:26.31\00:02:30.82 nausea, vomiting, stomach aches, 00:02:30.83\00:02:33.85 and intestinal cramps, diarrhea 00:02:33.86\00:02:36.14 and muscle cramps that just don't go away. 00:02:36.15\00:02:39.21 So we're supposed to take it slow 00:02:39.22\00:02:41.23 when we're exercising. 00:02:41.24\00:02:43.00 Well, that's what the study has showed, 00:02:43.01\00:02:44.73 it's not we don't exercise. 00:02:44.74\00:02:47.13 In fact if you used exercising everyday 00:02:47.14\00:02:49.73 when the heat come, you still need exercise, 00:02:49.74\00:02:52.28 but just don't exercises much as you were doing 00:02:52.29\00:02:55.11 take it little slower and then 00:02:55.12\00:02:56.99 as the summer goes on, you will be able to exercise 00:02:57.00\00:02:59.43 basically as much as you did when it wasn't summer, 00:02:59.44\00:03:02.86 but your body has to acclimate to it. 00:03:02.87\00:03:05.90 And so most people that have heat exhaustion problems, 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.63 they are not acclimating overtime, 00:03:08.64\00:03:10.38 they are overdoing on a hot day 00:03:10.39\00:03:13.20 and they haven't gradually got into the summer 00:03:13.21\00:03:17.61 by increasing the amount 00:03:17.62\00:03:18.99 of exercise that they are doing. 00:03:19.00\00:03:20.88 And they are also not staying well hydrated. 00:03:20.89\00:03:23.91 And that's an important element 00:03:23.92\00:03:25.62 is staying well hydrated. 00:03:25.63\00:03:27.33 So, your sodium goes down, all this other different 00:03:27.34\00:03:29.44 things that really just wears you out. 00:03:29.45\00:03:32.25 Now can you recover from that I mean 00:03:32.26\00:03:35.00 true or false you have heat stroke 00:03:35.01\00:03:37.63 or heat exhaustions sort to speak. 00:03:37.64\00:03:39.91 You never quite the same again, 00:03:39.92\00:03:41.32 you don't have the same stamina, 00:03:41.33\00:03:42.58 is that true, is that is false? 00:03:42.59\00:03:43.57 Yeah, will let's take a look 00:03:43.58\00:03:44.86 at different the heat exhaustion 00:03:44.87\00:03:46.25 and that can of course lead to heat stroke, 00:03:46.26\00:03:48.90 those are two different term. 00:03:48.91\00:03:50.11 Heat stoke is actually fatal or can be fatal. 00:03:50.12\00:03:54.78 Symptoms of heat exhaustion, you know, 00:03:54.79\00:03:58.06 are the symptoms I mentioned earlier 00:03:58.07\00:03:59.84 and if you are feeling those symptoms, 00:03:59.85\00:04:01.74 the key is to get to shady cool spot, 00:04:01.75\00:04:04.64 drink fluids get out of heat and really hydrate 00:04:04.65\00:04:08.79 to prevent the more fatal heat stroke 00:04:08.80\00:04:11.86 and if you do have heat stoke you may not 00:04:11.87\00:04:14.55 completely recover from that even if you do survive it. 00:04:14.56\00:04:18.28 There can be some permanent damage that can occur 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.97 to the brain as the result of heat stroke. 00:04:20.98\00:04:24.78 And we got the source for that, 00:04:24.79\00:04:25.99 where is that from? 00:04:26.00\00:04:27.37 Well, this is from 00:04:27.38\00:04:28.72 the National Athletic Trainers' Association. 00:04:28.73\00:04:31.68 There was a meeting there Dr. Brendon McDermott, 00:04:31.69\00:04:35.25 athletic trainer at the University of Connecticut, 00:04:35.26\00:04:38.06 is the one who did the study and the analysis. 00:04:38.07\00:04:41.13 And I should mention on heat stroke 00:04:41.14\00:04:42.69 the definition of that is when your 00:04:42.70\00:04:43.81 temperature goes up to over 104 degrees and then you end 00:04:43.82\00:04:48.87 with confusion mental instability, 00:04:48.88\00:04:51.39 you can have an irrational behavior 00:04:51.40\00:04:53.10 and even combativeness during the heat stroke, 00:04:53.11\00:04:56.66 when you get to that type of irrational behavior 00:04:56.67\00:04:59.20 over 104 degrees that's really 00:04:59.21\00:05:01.80 the definition of a heat stroke. 00:05:01.81\00:05:04.56 Okay, anything else on heat stroke 00:05:06.49\00:05:08.51 before we go to another fascinating study. 00:05:08.52\00:05:11.23 Oh, I think that's the main point 00:05:11.24\00:05:12.82 that he was emphasizing is get acclimated 00:05:12.83\00:05:15.32 and gradually increase your exercise 00:05:15.33\00:05:18.06 and stay well hydrated. 00:05:18.07\00:05:19.04 Here is another one, you know, from time to time 00:05:19.05\00:05:21.99 the economy goes up, the economy goes down. 00:05:22.00\00:05:24.04 In this particular study look that 00:05:24.05\00:05:25.23 when the economy goes down and when it goes down 00:05:25.24\00:05:29.30 the study said there was 00:05:29.31\00:05:30.35 an increase in cosmetic surgery. 00:05:30.36\00:05:32.70 Yes, amazingly enough you know we've had downturn 00:05:32.71\00:05:35.73 economically in this country the last couple of years. 00:05:35.74\00:05:38.58 There is no doubt that it has occurred 00:05:38.59\00:05:41.97 every economist across the nation is talking 00:05:41.98\00:05:44.56 about the economic downturn that we have experienced. 00:05:44.57\00:05:48.81 And the interesting thing as you would think 00:05:48.82\00:05:51.13 the cosmetic surgery would go down during 00:05:51.14\00:05:53.74 this time because people are under the crunch, 00:05:53.75\00:05:55.91 you now, they are having less money to deal with. 00:05:55.92\00:05:59.27 But actually the study show that cosmetic surgery 00:05:59.28\00:06:02.82 actually booms at least in Great Britain during 00:06:02.83\00:06:06.63 the economic downturn, and there is also evidence 00:06:06.64\00:06:09.73 of the same thing is true in the United States. 00:06:09.74\00:06:13.73 In fact Britain's largest cosmetic surgery provider 00:06:13.74\00:06:16.92 with the Harley Medical Group, 00:06:16.93\00:06:18.58 said the demand for procedures had grown 00:06:18.59\00:06:20.77 by 35 percent over the last 10 months, 00:06:20.78\00:06:23.63 when the economic downturn has been the steadiest. 00:06:23.64\00:06:27.53 And the tummy tuck operations cost 00:06:27.54\00:06:29.99 over 5000 pounds in the U.S that's over... 00:06:30.00\00:06:32.98 Over 10,000. That's $10,000. 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.62 Breast augmentation surgery swelled 40 percent, 00:06:35.63\00:06:39.63 the tummy tuck surgery grew 00:06:39.64\00:06:41.56 by 59 percent during the economic downturn. 00:06:41.57\00:06:45.51 And they actually did almost twice 00:06:45.52\00:06:48.21 as many surgeries in some cosmetic areas 00:06:48.22\00:06:51.46 than they had done the previous 10 months 00:06:51.47\00:06:54.23 when the economic downturn wasn't as much. 00:06:54.24\00:06:57.40 But I think the most important aspect 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.19 of this study that we can learn 00:06:59.20\00:07:00.66 from human nature is this. 00:07:00.67\00:07:03.51 And this is a study I mean I quote 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.56 from the studies author "Research among 00:07:05.57\00:07:07.46 our patients has shown that despite cutting back 00:07:07.47\00:07:09.95 across all other areas, people aren't cutting back 00:07:09.96\00:07:13.89 on money, they spend on themselves. 00:07:13.90\00:07:17.19 And so still the selfish interest 00:07:17.20\00:07:20.02 is there and what limited money they have, 00:07:20.03\00:07:22.40 they spend it on themselves and they think 00:07:22.41\00:07:24.20 this cosmetic surgery of course is going to help 00:07:24.21\00:07:26.84 them that's part of this great miss. 00:07:26.85\00:07:28.71 Help them get a job, help them do better 00:07:28.72\00:07:30.51 this economic downturn, they will go and then person 00:07:30.52\00:07:33.98 interviewing them cannot avoid hiring them 00:07:33.99\00:07:36.89 because their tummy looks better. 00:07:36.90\00:07:38.98 Well, and you know what they also think 00:07:38.99\00:07:40.90 is it's going to help themselves out emotionally. 00:07:40.91\00:07:43.24 I see. And that has been disproven by the way, 00:07:43.25\00:07:45.21 that's one of the myths of medicine that often 00:07:45.22\00:07:47.40 are repeated by plastic surgeons. 00:07:47.41\00:07:49.74 Our plastic surgeons will often say, 00:07:49.75\00:07:51.72 well you need to do this for yourself? 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.47 You feel better. You need to do 00:07:53.48\00:07:54.54 this because you feel better, 00:07:54.55\00:07:55.84 are you having some problems with depression, 00:07:55.85\00:07:57.48 some emotional problems, hey this is gonna 00:07:57.49\00:07:59.45 be the answer to it. 00:07:59.46\00:08:00.95 And you know what the study show, 00:08:00.96\00:08:02.86 not only is it not the answer, 00:08:02.87\00:08:04.72 but it actually a year or two later 00:08:04.73\00:08:08.02 their mental health is worse 00:08:08.03\00:08:09.41 than when they had the cosmetic surgery. 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.57 What do you think that it is because they, 00:08:11.58\00:08:13.10 they...you know, they think that, 00:08:13.11\00:08:15.20 that they are beauties on the outward 00:08:15.21\00:08:18.23 but not in the inward is... 00:08:18.24\00:08:20.10 Well, I think it's because they haven't dealt 00:08:20.11\00:08:22.11 with the underlying cause, their emotional problems. 00:08:22.12\00:08:24.62 They thought this might be a cause, 00:08:24.63\00:08:26.70 and so they dealt with something 00:08:26.71\00:08:27.94 that isn't a cause and whenever you are dealing 00:08:27.95\00:08:30.08 with something that isn't a cause 00:08:30.09\00:08:31.49 and you think it's the t cause, 00:08:31.50\00:08:32.47 you are setting yourself up for failure because 00:08:32.48\00:08:35.67 you know, first there is the emotional bump 00:08:35.68\00:08:37.85 that occurs after this surgeries. 00:08:37.86\00:08:38.95 People will actually transiently feel better. 00:08:38.96\00:08:42.11 But then they realize I have got the same 00:08:42.12\00:08:44.08 emotional problems I had before. 00:08:44.09\00:08:45.83 In fact I think they are worse, 00:08:45.84\00:08:47.36 I have done this, what else can I do 00:08:47.37\00:08:49.54 and they start feeling hopeless. 00:08:49.55\00:08:51.34 And for instance women who have undergone breast 00:08:51.35\00:08:54.15 augmentation procedures have over twice 00:08:54.16\00:08:56.60 this suicide risk from a year to 10 years later. 00:08:56.61\00:09:01.12 In some studies three to four fold increase 00:09:01.13\00:09:03.23 risk of suicide as compared to women 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.33 who were considering the surgery 00:09:05.34\00:09:06.55 but didn't have it done. 00:09:06.56\00:09:08.52 And that's again simply due to the myth 00:09:08.53\00:09:11.32 that this was going to help them out 00:09:11.33\00:09:12.96 emotionally when they really should have been dealing 00:09:12.97\00:09:15.64 with the primary problems 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.28 that were causing their emotional problems. 00:09:17.29\00:09:19.68 And cosmetic is not the reason 00:09:19.69\00:09:21.94 for emotional problems. 00:09:21.95\00:09:24.10 Fascinating, diabetes and hearing impairment. 00:09:24.11\00:09:28.87 Yes, for years we have known 00:09:28.88\00:09:30.00 diabetes increases the risk of blindness. 00:09:30.01\00:09:33.14 It actually is the leading cause of blindness, 00:09:33.15\00:09:36.21 or one of the leading cause of blindness 00:09:36.22\00:09:37.81 in the United States what we call 00:09:37.82\00:09:39.09 retinal diseases or retinopathy occurs 00:09:39.10\00:09:41.60 from not having controlled diabetes. 00:09:41.61\00:09:44.46 But now, we now know that hearing problems 00:09:44.47\00:09:47.85 also are very much more common in adult diabetics 00:09:47.86\00:09:53.39 or type two diabetics than in those 00:09:53.40\00:09:56.85 who do not have diabetes. 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.30 And why is that again, is that because 00:09:58.31\00:09:59.83 as the blood flow to the ear how is that works? 00:09:59.84\00:10:03.42 It maybe related to blood flow issuesto the ear, 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.51 we're not sure why at this point, 00:10:05.52\00:10:06.98 you know, with the eye disease 00:10:06.99\00:10:08.06 where you understand it more fully 00:10:08.07\00:10:09.59 it's been more fully explained. 00:10:09.60\00:10:11.47 But with the hearing impairment 00:10:11.48\00:10:13.77 we're not exactly sure, 00:10:13.78\00:10:15.44 but the study is pretty clear. 00:10:15.45\00:10:17.00 This was Dr. Kathleen Bainbridge 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.95 from Social and Scientific Systems 00:10:18.96\00:10:20.78 in Silver Spring, Maryland. 00:10:20.79\00:10:22.68 They evaluated 5000 individuals 00:10:22.69\00:10:25.10 20 to 69 years of age, and they found out 00:10:25.11\00:10:29.29 that the diabetes group had over double the risk 00:10:29.30\00:10:32.86 of hearing impairment even at the young age. 00:10:32.87\00:10:35.58 And so that begs the question well treating 00:10:35.59\00:10:38.06 this diabetes through lifestyle measures 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.28 prevent some of the hearing loss. 00:10:40.29\00:10:42.30 We don't know the answer to that yet, 00:10:42.31\00:10:43.84 but I would assume 00:10:43.85\00:10:45.33 that will be proven affirmative. 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.72 Once you loose hearing can you can get it back. 00:10:47.73\00:10:50.52 Unfortunately no, you know, that's the bad thing, 00:10:50.53\00:10:54.05 it's reversible hearing loss and 00:10:54.06\00:10:58.41 you know, once you get to that stage 00:10:58.42\00:11:00.48 it's not really reversible... Go ahead. 00:11:00.49\00:11:03.52 I was just gonna mention that study was publish 00:11:03.53\00:11:05.60 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, 00:11:05.61\00:11:07.11 July 1, 2008. 00:11:07.12\00:11:09.40 One of the think is kind of related right next 00:11:09.41\00:11:11.24 to the ear I guess diabetics 00:11:11.25\00:11:12.64 also of course have eye problems. 00:11:12.65\00:11:15.39 Diabetics do have eye problems 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.29 and that really cannot be reverse either. 00:11:17.30\00:11:19.64 In fact what they need to do is you got to see 00:11:19.65\00:11:22.36 an ophthalmologist and get laser surgery 00:11:22.37\00:11:25.00 if they have to prevent it from getting worse. 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.96 What happens is the retina sprout blood vessels 00:11:28.97\00:11:32.82 because of the blood vessel disease 00:11:32.83\00:11:34.31 are starting to spread, new blood vessels 00:11:34.32\00:11:36.09 and those new blood vessels can easily bleed, 00:11:36.10\00:11:38.45 if the retinal hemorrhage that causes 00:11:38.46\00:11:40.93 the blindness in a diabetic. 00:11:40.94\00:11:42.96 And we can prevent the retinal hemorrhage 00:11:42.97\00:11:44.73 by controlling the diabetes, by getting 00:11:44.74\00:11:47.02 on proper lifestyle and if you already 00:11:47.03\00:11:49.04 have that retinopathy where the doctor can see 00:11:49.05\00:11:51.64 in the eye getting the appropriate 00:11:51.65\00:11:53.92 ophthalmology treatment will spare you 00:11:53.93\00:11:58.57 from loosing your complete eyesight. 00:11:58.58\00:12:01.31 An ophthalmologist once told me that something 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.05 like 25 or more percent of first time diabetics 00:12:03.06\00:12:06.10 are diagnosed by an eye doctor. 00:12:06.11\00:12:09.16 Yes, because they can see it in the eyes and you know, 00:12:09.17\00:12:11.43 unfortunately that means disease 00:12:11.44\00:12:13.00 has been there for at least 10 years. 00:12:13.01\00:12:14.82 Is that right. 00:12:14.83\00:12:15.80 In fact the average diabetic by the time 00:12:15.81\00:12:17.93 they have been diagnosed, they have actually 00:12:17.94\00:12:19.72 been smoldering having smoldering 00:12:19.73\00:12:22.32 diabetes for 15 years. 00:12:22.33\00:12:24.67 And if they would known earlier 00:12:24.68\00:12:26.31 they could have intervened with diet 00:12:26.32\00:12:27.90 and lifestyle measures earlier. 00:12:27.91\00:12:29.53 But often they go undiagnosed for years. 00:12:29.54\00:12:34.03 Well, thank you so much 00:12:34.04\00:12:35.01 for being with us Dr. Nedley. 00:12:35.02\00:12:36.50 We know you have very busy schedule 00:12:36.51\00:12:37.92 and taking time out of that really means 00:12:37.93\00:12:39.49 a he lot to me and our viewers. 00:12:39.50\00:12:41.83 Well, thank you, it's always good 00:12:41.84\00:12:43.31 to be here with you on Health for Lifetime. 00:12:43.32\00:12:46.87 Thank you for joining us today. 00:12:46.88\00:12:48.14 We know you, have the schedule 00:12:48.15\00:12:49.12 that's busy as well. 00:12:49.13\00:12:50.10 What we hope this has been meaningful to you, 00:12:50.11\00:12:52.22 share with your friends. 00:12:52.23\00:12:53.75 We hope it's resolved. 00:12:53.76\00:12:54.73 You have health to last for a lifetime. 00:12:54.74\00:12:57.52
