Hello and welcome to Health For A Lifetime, I'm Your Host 00:00:51.22\00:00:53.52 Don Mackintosh and I'm glad you are with us today. 00:00:53.55\00:00:55.25 We Are Talking with Doctor Neil Nedley and 00:00:55.28\00:00:57.63 Doctor Nedley Welcome. - Thank You. 00:00:57.67\00:01:00.14 We are going to be looking at some current studies as of 00:01:00.18\00:01:02.90 2008 and just brand new studies. 00:01:02.94\00:01:06.64 We are going to be looking at things that are kind 00:01:06.68\00:01:09.41 of a hodgepodge, these are fascinating studies 00:01:09.45\00:01:12.14 and very helpful. 00:01:12.18\00:01:13.41 We are going to look in the first half here at high 00:01:13.44\00:01:16.51 caffeine drinks, maybe you have heard about those. 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.57 We are also going to be looking at vitamin D. 00:01:19.60\00:01:24.09 It might not seem like it is important stuff but it is 00:01:24.13\00:01:26.32 very important isn't it? - absolutely. 00:01:26.36\00:01:28.89 So why don't we just start with a high dosage of 00:01:28.93\00:01:31.96 a caffeine drink here and see what that does to us. 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.99 We actually have a graphic that goes 00:01:35.02\00:01:37.23 along with this study. 00:01:37.26\00:01:38.67 There is a drink called Red Bull, it is an energy drink 00:01:38.70\00:01:42.28 that is used by a lot of university and college students 00:01:42.31\00:01:46.27 as well as athletes and those in extreme sports and even 00:01:46.30\00:01:50.22 race car drivers. 00:01:50.26\00:01:51.94 The problem with that is it can increase the risk of heart 00:01:51.98\00:01:54.94 attack and strokes significantly. 00:01:54.97\00:01:57.19 Even in younger individuals who do not have any 00:01:57.22\00:02:00.67 cardiovascular disease. 00:02:00.70\00:02:02.65 So this study was just published and it actually was done 00:02:02.68\00:02:09.78 by a group in Australia. 00:02:09.82\00:02:12.04 This Australian group was studying this drink that 00:02:12.07\00:02:15.93 actually comes out Austria. 00:02:15.97\00:02:18.05 I didn't realize how pervasive Red Bull is 00:02:18.09\00:02:22.91 but it actually sold 3.5 billion cans in 143 countries. 00:02:22.95\00:02:32.05 Wow! So lots of people are drinking this and what does it 00:02:32.08\00:02:36.33 do to you? Well what it does is it actually tightens 00:02:36.36\00:02:39.70 blood vessels, and it makes your blood vessels and your 00:02:39.73\00:02:43.17 circulation as if you already have heart disease and 00:02:43.20\00:02:46.60 atherosclerosis even if you don't have it. 00:02:46.64\00:02:49.26 It causes the blood platelets to get sticky and the 00:02:49.29\00:02:54.12 viscosity of the blood to go up. 00:02:54.15\00:02:56.86 The platelets are those things that come out when you're 00:02:56.89\00:02:59.59 going to have a clot? That's right, you want to have 00:02:59.62\00:03:02.74 platelets that work well in the problem with them is if 00:03:02.78\00:03:06.37 they work too well they get toward a more narrow area 00:03:06.41\00:03:09.44 where you might have some calcium in the blood vessel, 00:03:09.47\00:03:12.43 those blood platelets can think that the blood vessel was 00:03:12.47\00:03:15.54 damaged and they all gather together and cause an artery 00:03:15.58\00:03:18.62 to actually close off. 00:03:18.66\00:03:20.04 Platelets which is the clotting factor in viscosity which 00:03:20.08\00:03:23.32 means that it is really thick, in other words the blood is 00:03:23.36\00:03:27.32 clumping together and how does that cause that to happen? 00:03:27.35\00:03:31.27 How does caffeine cause that to happen? 00:03:31.31\00:03:33.24 Well caffeine does actually play, it is a drug when it 00:03:33.27\00:03:37.64 ends in ine, anyplace with little things on platelet 00:03:37.68\00:03:41.98 molecules called adenosine, it blocks adenosine receptors and 00:03:42.01\00:03:46.08 that makes the platelets not work like they are supposed to. 00:03:46.11\00:03:50.14 So is this true with any caffeine drink? 00:03:50.18\00:03:54.21 Not just Red Bull? While the study was done on Red Bull 00:03:54.24\00:03:59.03 and Red Bull has 80 mg of caffeine in it in one drink. 00:03:59.06\00:04:03.14 That is equivalent to a cup of coffee and so the study 00:04:03.18\00:04:07.29 researchers said we need to study a cup of coffee in the 00:04:07.32\00:04:11.40 same way, maybe it has the same risk. 00:04:11.43\00:04:13.81 We do know that coffee has the same amount of caffeine 00:04:13.84\00:04:16.87 and we know caffeine is the main problem with Red Bull but coffee 00:04:16.91\00:04:21.99 might have some advantages over Red Bull and that is 00:04:22.03\00:04:24.92 coffee has cocoa which is an antioxidant. 00:04:24.95\00:04:28.01 Antioxidants can mitigate against it slightly. 00:04:28.04\00:04:35.26 So the bad things are kind of weighed out by something else 00:04:35.29\00:04:39.08 that makes it a little less bad? 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.76 Right, but with Red Bull you are not getting any of the 00:04:40.79\00:04:44.41 good stuff, and it turns out that one hour after they 00:04:44.44\00:04:48.50 drink Red Bull their blood vessels were no longer normal 00:04:48.54\00:04:52.80 and it increased their risk of heart attack and stroke 00:04:52.83\00:04:57.06 after just one drink. 00:04:57.09\00:04:58.60 And is this even with kids, teenagers and whatnot? 00:04:58.64\00:05:01.28 With teenagers as well and the problem with this is it is 00:05:01.32\00:05:06.47 being marketed to this young age group. 00:05:06.51\00:05:08.14 In fact it is even formula on racing advertises Red Bull 00:05:08.18\00:05:13.72 says it will give you wings. 00:05:13.75\00:05:15.36 Young people are wanting to get the sprout wings and 00:05:15.40\00:05:18.43 they think the caffeine will make them feel like 00:05:18.46\00:05:21.43 they have those wings and in a sense because of the 00:05:21.46\00:05:24.75 stimulation that it does they might get that feeling. 00:05:24.78\00:05:28.41 But unfortunately that feeling is not associated with 00:05:28.45\00:05:31.64 the same benefits to the hardens blood vessels in fact 00:05:31.68\00:05:34.84 it is the opposite benefit. 00:05:34.88\00:05:36.39 So basically the take-home message is, no matter what the 00:05:36.42\00:05:39.66 brand name is something that is high in caffeine is going 00:05:39.69\00:05:43.62 to try and excite you and set you up for real problems and 00:05:43.65\00:05:47.55 you could rue the day you ever drank the drink. 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.16 Yeah exactly and it is unfortunate that a lot of people 00:05:50.19\00:05:54.73 who sell caffeine have been trying to talk about 00:05:54.77\00:05:57.40 the benefits of caffeine drinks. 00:05:57.43\00:06:00.38 They have to really try to stretch it to show benefits, 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.98 and yes it does stimulate, it is a drug and unfortunately 00:06:04.02\00:06:07.55 it causes habituation and if you withdraw from it and get 00:06:07.58\00:06:10.69 severe splitting headaches that is a clue that this thing 00:06:10.72\00:06:13.79 is not very good for you. 00:06:13.82\00:06:14.93 No good natural food that is good for the heart or good 00:06:14.97\00:06:20.61 for the blood vessels when you withdraw from it 00:06:20.65\00:06:22.56 you get a splitting headache. 00:06:22.59\00:06:24.22 That is just not the way it is for healthy chemicals, 00:06:24.26\00:06:28.13 but caffeine is not one of those. 00:06:28.16\00:06:30.29 One last thing before we go to that vitamin D and that is 00:06:30.32\00:06:34.28 the mental performance of some of the drinks like this, 00:06:34.32\00:06:37.90 if you are race car driver and different things where 00:06:37.93\00:06:41.44 they are encouraging people in athletics, does it make you more 00:06:41.48\00:06:43.73 proficient? Can you focus more? Is your mental ability 00:06:43.77\00:06:47.51 increased by it? 00:06:47.54\00:06:48.71 Well there have been studies done on that as well, 00:06:48.74\00:06:50.97 typist a little faster under the influence of caffeine, 00:06:51.01\00:06:54.13 but they make 10 times as many errors. 00:06:54.16\00:06:56.10 Well I guess that's not very helpful is it? 00:06:56.14\00:06:58.53 You have to have spell checker. 00:06:58.57\00:06:59.63 If you are line man in a football game, or you are trying 00:06:59.66\00:07:03.44 to race down the sidelines the caffeine actually does seem 00:07:03.47\00:07:06.66 to help, but you don't want to give it to the quarterback. 00:07:06.70\00:07:09.86 Because the quarterback needs to have good analytical 00:07:09.89\00:07:14.00 thinking, he needs to be quick but more important than 00:07:14.04\00:07:17.52 quickness is the decision he is making with that ball. 00:07:17.56\00:07:22.04 You have one decision which is I got to run this way 00:07:22.08\00:07:25.72 verses 30 options as quarterback but it is okay for 00:07:25.76\00:07:29.37 the one option person. 00:07:29.40\00:07:30.75 It's okay for the one option person during that time but 00:07:30.79\00:07:33.81 unfortunately you setting them up for heart disease and 00:07:33.85\00:07:37.02 problems so really I wouldn't even recommend it for them. 00:07:37.06\00:07:40.19 But as far as the athletic performance is concerned 00:07:40.23\00:07:42.67 it doesn't seem to be adverse except if you are in 00:07:42.70\00:07:45.11 the decision-making role. 00:07:45.14\00:07:46.74 I just can't help myself one more question 00:07:46.77\00:07:49.61 - that's all right. - I have actually been you know 00:07:49.65\00:07:52.67 I have attended a lot of places of worship in my line of 00:07:52.71\00:07:55.61 work and of all different denominations. 00:07:55.65\00:07:58.60 Some denominations well I have actually crossed all the 00:07:58.64\00:08:03.23 denominations but there is this increase like Starbucks 00:08:03.27\00:08:07.74 mentality that the lobby you have or maybe some kind of 00:08:07.77\00:08:12.16 foods usually high Fatty and sugary foods along with 00:08:12.19\00:08:16.03 maybe a caffeine type drink, what does that do to your 00:08:16.07\00:08:19.87 ability to listen to a sermon? 00:08:19.91\00:08:21.77 Or to listen to a message or a lecture? 00:08:21.81\00:08:24.26 It really decreases the abilities significantly, in fact 00:08:24.29\00:08:28.49 if you were to drink a Red Bull before you went to 00:08:28.52\00:08:32.29 a university lecture trying to explain some advanced 00:08:32.33\00:08:36.06 concept at all you would lose focus, 00:08:36.10\00:08:39.00 you wouldn't be able to stand it. 00:08:39.04\00:08:41.87 You'd want to get up and want to move and you really 00:08:41.91\00:08:44.17 wouldn't want to stay with the lecture, and stay with the 00:08:44.20\00:08:48.03 learning aspect of things. 00:08:48.07\00:08:49.96 So maybe that's why they added a little exercise at the 00:08:50.00\00:08:53.58 beginning of the service sometimes you will have a pep 00:08:53.62\00:08:57.13 rally and is that to calm them down or maybe they feel like 00:08:57.17\00:09:01.69 they have to do that? 00:09:01.72\00:09:02.69 I don't know the two seem to work together and I thought 00:09:02.70\00:09:04.71 it was interesting. 00:09:04.74\00:09:06.06 Yeah I wouldn't recommend, you know the spirituality is to 00:09:06.09\00:09:09.57 be for the enhancement of the frontal lobes of the brain. 00:09:09.60\00:09:12.63 I mean the frontal lobe is the crown of the brain and 00:09:12.66\00:09:15.62 this is the area that really needs to be expanded and when 00:09:15.65\00:09:18.32 the frontal lobe is compromised we make poorer decisions, 00:09:18.35\00:09:21.90 risk of depression, we would end up with a greater risk 00:09:21.94\00:09:25.56 of problem children and etc. when we are parenting them so 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.41 we really want to enhance the frontal lobe function and 00:09:28.44\00:09:31.22 caffeine does not enhance it. 00:09:31.25\00:09:32.45 Caffeine blocks it the adenosine reflectors in the frontal 00:09:32.48\00:09:35.42 lobe and studies show that when you have caffeine on board 00:09:35.46\00:09:38.36 you are more likely to gossip that when 00:09:38.40\00:09:40.48 you don't have caffeine on board so even things like 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.61 that are affected by it. 00:09:43.65\00:09:45.05 So I would say if we are really wanting to enter into 00:09:45.08\00:09:47.95 a worshipful experience, let's leave the frontal lobes 00:09:47.98\00:09:50.81 suppressants out of this picture. 00:09:50.84\00:09:52.86 What about vitamin D? 00:09:52.90\00:09:54.43 We've had enough of that little segment 00:09:54.46\00:09:57.26 so lets go to vitamin D. 00:09:57.29\00:09:58.88 Yes, very interesting study on vitamin D and we also have 00:09:58.92\00:10:02.19 a graphic in regards to this. 00:10:02.22\00:10:04.43 Vitamin D has now been shown to help colorectal cancer 00:10:04.46\00:10:10.10 patients and this is very exciting. 00:10:10.14\00:10:14.38 You can see the man there getting his vitamin D, 00:10:14.41\00:10:17.72 it is direct sunlight that is one of the best ways 00:10:17.76\00:10:21.03 of getting vitamin D. 00:10:21.06\00:10:22.69 It produces an active hormone in the body that 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.73 we know prevents cancer, but this is now a study done 00:10:26.77\00:10:31.66 on people who already have the cancer. 00:10:31.70\00:10:35.85 In fact for years Don, there have been many people 00:10:35.89\00:10:40.99 who have tried to give certain vitamins in pills to 00:10:41.02\00:10:45.41 prevent cancer, you know the beta-carotene study where 00:10:45.45\00:10:49.03 they were given beta-carotene to thousands of people and 00:10:49.07\00:10:52.14 the other people were getting a placebo, no benefit. 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.18 Vitamin C has been tried, a small benefit with vitamin C, 00:10:55.22\00:11:00.13 maybe a one or two percentage points at the most. 00:11:00.16\00:11:03.62 But there are nutrients that you can take that can 00:11:03.65\00:11:06.99 significantly decrease your risk of cancer and 00:11:07.03\00:11:10.92 we are talking 50% 60% 70% reduction in cancer. 00:11:10.95\00:11:14.77 Those nutrients are vitamin D and calcium particularly 00:11:14.81\00:11:18.91 together, and these are just studies done in the last two 00:11:18.94\00:11:23.01 years, but this actual study that we are quoting 00:11:23.04\00:11:27.40 from 2008 show that extended lives of people with 00:11:27.43\00:11:31.76 colon and rectal cancer. 00:11:31.79\00:11:33.35 Previous research of course had shown that they were less 00:11:33.38\00:11:36.44 likely to develop colon or rectal cancer if they have 00:11:36.48\00:11:39.77 higher amounts of vitamin D in both women and men. 00:11:39.80\00:11:42.70 Women are much less likely to develop breast cancer. 00:11:42.74\00:11:45.76 Both women and men are much less likely to develop 00:11:45.79\00:11:48.78 Hymnologic cancer of the blood. 00:11:48.82\00:11:51.67 It is blood related cancers. 00:11:51.71\00:11:54.50 Now this was a new study led by Doctor Ing of the Dana- 00:11:54.53\00:11:59.19 Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. 00:11:59.23\00:12:01.21 He involved 300 to 400 men and women that have been 00:12:01.24\00:12:04.52 diagnosed with colorectal cancer from 1991 to 2002. 00:12:04.55\00:12:07.76 What they did is that they went back and looked at their 00:12:07.79\00:12:11.24 vitamin D levels to see if there was any relationship to 00:12:11.28\00:12:14.70 how long they lived. 00:12:14.73\00:12:16.00 This study was just published in the Clinical Oncology 00:12:16.03\00:12:20.21 and they found that the blood vitamin D levels were 00:12:20.24\00:12:24.39 related to how long they lived. 00:12:24.42\00:12:26.20 These vitamin D levels were tracked for an average of 00:12:26.24\00:12:29.26 about 6-1/2 years and those in the highest 25% of 00:12:29.29\00:12:32.89 vitamin D levels were 50% less likely to die during 00:12:32.93\00:12:36.55 the study from their cancer or any other cause compared 00:12:36.59\00:12:40.25 to the patience with the lowest 25% of vitamin D levels. 00:12:40.28\00:12:44.23 So what if you are just in the upper fourth of individuals 00:12:44.26\00:12:48.72 after you have cancer you are going to be able to extend 00:12:48.75\00:12:53.02 your life significantly, I mean doubling your risk of 00:12:53.06\00:12:57.32 living. - or dying. - if you have a low vitamin D 00:12:57.35\00:13:01.58 you doubled your risk of dying. 00:13:01.61\00:13:02.94 So vitamin D then you cannot get it anywhere except from 00:13:02.97\00:13:06.24 sunlight? Or where else? 00:13:06.27\00:13:08.28 Well you can get it in supplements. 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.12 Which is the best supplement, one or the other 00:13:10.16\00:13:14.26 or can you overdo it? 00:13:14.29\00:13:15.51 You can overdo vitamin D, vitamin D is fat soluble so what 00:13:15.55\00:13:19.81 I would recommend as an internal medicine physician, 00:13:19.85\00:13:22.92 anyone who has cancer particularly colorectal cancer, 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.29 breast cancer, prostate cancer I recommend that they get 00:13:26.32\00:13:29.71 their vitamin D. level drawn and they see with their 25 00:13:29.74\00:13:33.46 hydroxy vitamin D. level, don't get the 125 because that 00:13:33.50\00:13:37.18 varies a lot throughout the day, 00:13:37.22\00:13:39.22 the 25 hydroxy will tell 00:13:39.26\00:13:41.23 you where your vitamin D. stores are and then you can see. 00:13:41.26\00:13:43.79 whether you may need to supplement. 00:13:43.83\00:13:45.45 If you are really low if you are in the bottom fourth, 00:13:45.48\00:13:48.37 you really need to mega doses of Vitamin D and sunlight. 00:13:48.41\00:13:51.49 for a few days isn't going to be enough to get you up there. 00:13:51.52\00:13:54.75 You need some mega doses, prescription doses of Vitamin D 00:13:54.78\00:13:58.01 to get it up there and maintain it with either supplements 00:13:58.05\00:14:01.24 or with sunlight. 00:14:01.28\00:14:03.52 We have been talking to Doctor Neil Nedley, talking about 00:14:03.56\00:14:06.48 vitamin D and it is important. 00:14:06.51\00:14:09.06 When we come back we will continue a little of that. 00:14:09.09\00:14:11.63 discussion and look at some more new research. 00:14:11.66\00:14:14.11 Join us when we come back. 00:14:14.15\00:14:15.54
