Welcome back. 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 We've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:00:02.96\00:00:03.93 We've been talking about 00:00:03.94\00:00:05.58 prenatal influences and how to avoid premature births 00:00:05.61\00:00:09.97 and avoid having children that are maybe low birth weight 00:00:10.00\00:00:13.60 or actually just come too early. 00:00:13.63\00:00:15.19 Dr. Nedley, the definition there, was, just to recap, 00:00:15.20\00:00:18.36 was an early birth is anytime before 37 weeks. Correct? 00:00:18.39\00:00:23.41 Any time before 37 weeks. 00:00:23.44\00:00:25.63 One in eight kids today are born premature. 00:00:25.66\00:00:31.11 Higher than it's ever been in America. 00:00:31.14\00:00:33.35 And that's probably increasing because of some of the risk 00:00:33.38\00:00:36.08 factors we talked about before the break like 00:00:36.11\00:00:38.76 more people smoking, more people drinking... 00:00:38.79\00:00:41.38 Actually, not as many smoking 00:00:41.41\00:00:43.71 although, smoking has cut down in men 00:00:43.72\00:00:47.58 but not near as much in women. 00:00:47.61\00:00:49.45 But most women that get pregnant, they quit smoking 00:00:49.48\00:00:53.10 if they are smokers. 00:00:53.13\00:00:54.21 But there's an increased risk of a host of other problems. 00:00:54.24\00:00:57.20 That we have... Some of which we've talked about. 00:00:57.23\00:01:01.05 such as alcohol, caffeine, 00:01:01.08\00:01:04.13 and maternal obesity, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, 00:01:04.16\00:01:08.64 and then others that we haven't talked about yet. 00:01:08.67\00:01:11.20 We'll talk a little bit more about 00:01:11.23\00:01:12.98 some of the things that cause it 00:01:13.01\00:01:14.29 but I also want us to really see the impact of it. 00:01:14.32\00:01:17.23 Like, what does this really do to the kids? 00:01:17.26\00:01:19.53 Right. And unfortunately it does.. 00:01:19.56\00:01:21.52 increases their likelihood of a lot of bad things that happen. 00:01:21.55\00:01:25.45 For instance, it increases their likelihood 00:01:25.48\00:01:27.62 of having premature heart disease. 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.66 It increases their likelihood of having high blood pressure 00:01:29.69\00:01:33.20 at an earlier age than they should. 00:01:33.23\00:01:35.63 It increases their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. 00:01:35.66\00:01:39.43 And it's one of the reasons why Type 2 diabetes is increasing. 00:01:39.46\00:01:43.01 So how does that work? 00:01:43.04\00:01:44.34 I mean, why would they get heart disease sooner? 00:01:44.37\00:01:45.74 Why would they get diabetes sooner? 00:01:45.75\00:01:47.19 Does anyone really know? 00:01:47.20\00:01:48.82 Yeah. Those are mechanisms that 00:01:48.85\00:01:50.86 we're just kind of, you know, speculating on. 00:01:50.87\00:01:53.93 We just know the association. 00:01:53.96\00:01:56.53 You can see it when we study statistics 00:01:56.56\00:01:59.35 that out of these one in eight children 00:01:59.38\00:02:01.29 that are born prematurely 00:02:01.32\00:02:02.91 when they're followed 00:02:02.94\00:02:04.43 over the course of the next thirty or forty years 00:02:04.44\00:02:07.12 we see a dramatic increased risk of a number of problems. 00:02:07.15\00:02:10.23 And it's not just physical problems. 00:02:10.26\00:02:12.32 It increases their risk of cancer; 00:02:12.35\00:02:14.77 increases their risk of 00:02:14.78\00:02:16.42 bipolar disorder, of depression, 00:02:16.45\00:02:20.35 of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. 00:02:20.38\00:02:23.27 A lot of the ADHD kids, not all of them but many of them 00:02:23.30\00:02:27.11 were born premature and that increased their risk of ADHD. 00:02:27.14\00:02:32.75 It also... There's a tendency for decreased muscle strength. 00:02:32.78\00:02:37.26 You know, you don't see 00:02:37.29\00:02:38.93 the great physical 00:02:38.96\00:02:42.16 muscle builders coming from those who were born premature. 00:02:42.19\00:02:46.27 So it can even affect, you know, their strength 00:02:46.30\00:02:50.20 and their capacity to be able to even perform 00:02:50.41\00:02:53.53 at a high athletic level. 00:02:53.56\00:02:56.27 It increases their problems intellectually. 00:02:56.30\00:03:01.86 In other words it does have a role in decreasing IQ. 00:03:01.89\00:03:05.43 And some studies show as little as five points, 00:03:05.46\00:03:08.70 others show maybe a 15 to 20 point IQ 00:03:08.73\00:03:11.36 decrease depending on how premature the baby was. 00:03:11.39\00:03:15.85 So, that has to do with brain development. 00:03:15.88\00:03:18.86 Is the brain developed in uterine? 00:03:18.89\00:03:21.18 Is it the last thing being developed? 00:03:21.21\00:03:23.42 Well, no. The brain is actually 00:03:23.45\00:03:24.96 one of the first things being developed. 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.39 The brain is really kind of the prime 00:03:26.42\00:03:28.74 part of embryology that's being developed. 00:03:28.77\00:03:32.42 So the first trimester is very important. 00:03:32.45\00:03:33.95 The second trimester is very important. 00:03:33.98\00:03:35.86 But also the completion of it seems to be important as well. 00:03:35.89\00:03:41.73 So all of these different things make 00:03:41.76\00:03:44.96 what we're saying very, very serious. 00:03:44.99\00:03:47.07 In other words, you don't just mess around with this. 00:03:47.10\00:03:49.13 You don't say oh. You need to be very careful 00:03:49.16\00:03:51.57 about what you're doing with your prenatal care. 00:03:51.60\00:03:53.94 You need to be very careful about it. 00:03:53.97\00:03:55.96 You need to get on the right lifestyle. 00:03:55.97\00:03:58.42 And another factor that was cited 00:03:58.45\00:04:01.38 and this was cited by the US Government 00:04:01.41\00:04:03.61 as reasons for increased prematurity 00:04:03.64\00:04:07.10 and this would be lower down on our list. 00:04:07.13\00:04:08.81 This isn't among the top ten. 00:04:08.84\00:04:10.34 But elective C-sections actually increase the risk 00:04:10.37\00:04:14.87 of preterm delivery. 00:04:14.90\00:04:16.88 Not the emergency C-sections. 00:04:16.91\00:04:19.70 There are women that need to have a Caesarean delivery 00:04:19.73\00:04:23.46 to save their life or to save the life of the child. 00:04:23.49\00:04:25.76 And that's about five percent of cases 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.08 definitely are going to need an emergency Caesarean section. 00:04:29.11\00:04:33.12 But the Caesarean section rate is far higher than that 00:04:33.15\00:04:36.51 in America and it's really due to what we call 00:04:36.54\00:04:38.69 elective Caesarean sections. 00:04:38.72\00:04:40.85 Well people are not 00:04:40.88\00:04:42.24 trying to have a C-section before 37 weeks are they? 00:04:42.27\00:04:44.75 No, but what happens is 00:04:44.78\00:04:47.20 sometimes the calculations are off. 00:04:47.23\00:04:49.38 And so the doctor thinks he's taking a 38 or 39 week baby 00:04:49.41\00:04:55.25 in reality, once they get it out, 00:04:55.28\00:04:57.54 they realize the baby's actually premature. 00:04:57.57\00:04:59.97 All of our calculations are not completely 100% reliable. 00:05:00.00\00:05:07.03 Because it's based on the family history of the mother. 00:05:07.06\00:05:09.69 Well, no. They're taking a look at the 00:05:09.72\00:05:12.58 head size on the ultra sound. 00:05:12.61\00:05:15.00 They're taking a look at the history 00:05:15.03\00:05:17.09 of when the last period was. - Right. 00:05:17.12\00:05:19.14 And they're looking at factors like that. 00:05:19.17\00:05:21.49 But none of those are 100% reliable. 00:05:21.52\00:05:23.97 Sometimes a goof is made. 00:05:24.00\00:05:27.84 So it's better to let nature have its course if you can. 00:05:27.87\00:05:33.32 Exactly. There needs to be a concerted effort. 00:05:33.35\00:05:37.31 In fact the US Government task force has mentioned this. 00:05:37.34\00:05:40.87 There needs to be a concerted effort to try to decrease 00:05:40.90\00:05:43.74 the number of elective Caesarean sections done in this country. 00:05:43.77\00:05:47.05 Okay. So, all of these prenatal influences and then their impact 00:05:47.08\00:05:53.02 What can we do to avoid these problems? 00:05:53.05\00:05:58.82 What kind of things can we be doing? 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.54 Well, one of the things, it a very modifiable risk factor 00:06:00.57\00:06:03.50 is avoiding infectious diseases 00:06:03.53\00:06:06.61 of the mother after she gets pregnant. 00:06:06.62\00:06:10.35 Many mothers don't see that as something that's very vital 00:06:10.38\00:06:16.16 and they just go about their regular routines as far as 00:06:16.19\00:06:20.88 trying to avoid infections. 00:06:20.91\00:06:22.47 But it becomes very important, when you're pregnant, 00:06:22.50\00:06:25.33 to avoid contracting infections. 00:06:25.43\00:06:27.51 So what kind of infections? 00:06:27.54\00:06:28.59 Like the common cold? 00:06:28.62\00:06:30.13 Yeah, the common cold. 00:06:30.16\00:06:31.34 Even the flu virus can significantly 00:06:31.37\00:06:34.84 increase the risk of premature delivery. 00:06:34.87\00:06:36.96 There are other infections 00:06:36.99\00:06:40.29 like the sexually transmitted infections. 00:06:40.32\00:06:42.29 The human Trichomonas infection 00:06:42.32\00:06:47.31 increases the risk of still birth, 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.00 increases the risk of premature delivery. 00:06:49.03\00:06:51.70 And that's a sexually transmitted disease. 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.76 Chlamydia, the most common 00:06:53.77\00:06:56.05 sexually transmitted disease in teenagers 00:06:56.08\00:06:59.66 is actually a cause, again, of premature delivery. 00:06:59.69\00:07:05.62 So, as soon as you get pregnant should you go get 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.32 tested to see if you have any sexually transmitted diseases, 00:07:07.35\00:07:10.26 if you have any question whatsoever? 00:07:10.29\00:07:11.93 Well, that would be a good thing. 00:07:11.96\00:07:13.97 However, another factor is 00:07:13.98\00:07:16.76 if there's inappropriate antibiotic usage 00:07:16.79\00:07:18.92 it increases your risk of preterm delivery. 00:07:18.95\00:07:20.88 So you don't want to use antibiotics indiscriminately. 00:07:20.91\00:07:24.02 But if you do have an infection, 00:07:24.05\00:07:25.87 you want to use a safe antibiotic 00:07:25.90\00:07:28.79 and get that taken care of. 00:07:28.82\00:07:30.10 But actually, the time to check for 00:07:30.13\00:07:32.24 sexually transmitted diseases is before you get pregnant. 00:07:32.27\00:07:34.86 You really want that treated before you have a baby. 00:07:34.89\00:07:38.46 And that's why planned pregnancies 00:07:38.49\00:07:41.19 often are better than the unplanned. 00:07:41.20\00:07:44.43 I noticed tick bites are related to premature... 00:07:44.44\00:07:48.24 Yeah, Lyme's disease, Q fever, these are 00:07:48.27\00:07:51.99 infections that can be transmitted through ticks 00:07:52.02\00:07:55.10 that can increase the risk of preterm delivery. 00:07:55.13\00:07:57.92 So it's very important for mothers to stay out of 00:07:57.95\00:08:00.56 those tick environments, if they can, when they're pregnant. 00:08:00.59\00:08:04.58 So, what about immunizations? 00:08:04.61\00:08:08.02 Now that's a very controversial subject 00:08:08.05\00:08:10.15 for some that are having babies and they say 00:08:10.18\00:08:12.35 Well, I don't want any of that. 00:08:12.38\00:08:13.57 Is that a good thing? bad thing? 00:08:13.60\00:08:15.29 What would you say? I know I don't want you to... 00:08:15.32\00:08:17.03 Well, I can tell you, immunizations are safer today 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.88 than they've ever been before. 00:08:19.91\00:08:21.37 It's US Government law now that 00:08:21.40\00:08:24.83 no mercury can be involved in vaccinations. 00:08:24.86\00:08:28.29 There used to be some mercury there 00:08:28.32\00:08:30.18 and that was increasing the risk of problems, frankly. 00:08:30.21\00:08:34.39 Now that the mercury is out 00:08:34.42\00:08:36.91 and if the vaccine is actually a dead 00:08:36.94\00:08:42.15 vaccine where it's not a live one that also decreases the 00:08:42.18\00:08:46.15 risk. Yes, if the mother contracts measles or rubella 00:08:46.18\00:08:51.21 or rubeola during pregnancy 00:08:51.24\00:08:53.24 it increases her risk of preterm delivery. 00:08:53.27\00:08:55.05 That's why it's important to be vaccinated 00:08:55.08\00:08:59.97 to actually help the health of not only you 00:09:00.00\00:09:04.28 but potentially, your next child. 00:09:04.31\00:09:06.90 Chicken pox? 00:09:06.93\00:09:08.13 Chicken pox as well. 00:09:08.16\00:09:10.86 You can't be vaccinated for that. 00:09:10.89\00:09:12.77 You actually can be now. 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.15 The chicken pox vaccine is out now. 00:09:14.18\00:09:17.10 Just get it before you get pregnant. 00:09:17.13\00:09:18.17 Yeah, that's right 00:09:18.18\00:09:20.31 Nutritionally, I noticed also in your research 00:09:20.34\00:09:24.02 there are some things that you can do to just mitigate 00:09:24.05\00:09:26.52 or try to avoid this premature birth that you mention. 00:09:26.55\00:09:30.38 Do you want to talk about those at all? 00:09:30.41\00:09:32.17 Yes, there are a number of nutritional factors that 00:09:32.20\00:09:36.56 can actually help you carry a baby to term. 00:09:36.59\00:09:39.90 And one of those is getting enough omega-3 fats. 00:09:39.93\00:09:42.61 Another is getting enough calcium, 00:09:42.64\00:09:45.22 enough zinc, enough folic acid. 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.41 All of these nutrients are important, 00:09:47.44\00:09:50.07 particularly during pregnancy. 00:09:50.10\00:09:51.60 We can't stress enough of the role of folic acid 00:09:51.63\00:09:54.69 in helping brain development, as well. 00:09:54.72\00:09:58.18 It also can help prevent preterm delivery. 00:09:58.21\00:10:01.93 So, these things are eating your green leafy vegetables, 00:10:01.96\00:10:03.96 eating like English walnuts, nuts that are 00:10:03.99\00:10:06.95 high in those omega-3s. - Yes. 00:10:06.98\00:10:09.37 All those different kind of things. 00:10:09.40\00:10:10.96 I know in some of your books you have those lists but 00:10:10.99\00:10:14.65 just a simple research on the internet 00:10:14.68\00:10:16.71 or at the library you can figure what those foods are. 00:10:16.72\00:10:20.02 But is it basically, foods as grown of all different colors? 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.92 Would that be safe? 00:10:22.95\00:10:23.97 Well, that would pretty safe. Yeah, that's true. 00:10:24.00\00:10:26.05 And the nutrients there, we can list them are 00:10:26.08\00:10:28.69 Calcium, magnesium, zinc, riboflavin, folic acid, 00:10:28.70\00:10:31.84 antioxidant vitamins such and E and C, omega-3 fats, 00:10:31.87\00:10:35.10 and a very important amino acid called arginine. 00:10:35.14\00:10:38.37 All of these, if they are increased 00:10:38.40\00:10:41.97 to appropriate amounts or above 00:10:42.00\00:10:43.92 are going to decrease a mother's risk of preeclampsia. 00:10:43.95\00:10:48.36 Now, preeclampsia is a condition 00:10:48.39\00:10:50.65 where it tends to occur on the first baby 00:10:50.68\00:10:53.42 but that's where the individual 00:10:53.45\00:10:56.27 can actually end up having a seizure. 00:10:56.30\00:10:58.12 Often they'll have swelling of the ankles first 00:10:58.15\00:11:00.33 and high blood pressure, protein in the urine. 00:11:00.36\00:11:02.50 Then it can develop to a mother having a seizure 00:11:02.53\00:11:05.33 and of course that can threaten her life, the life of the child. 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.56 and if these nutrients are all up there, 00:11:07.59\00:11:09.84 the risk of preeclampsia goes down. 00:11:09.87\00:11:12.46 And so that means the risk of preterm delivery 00:11:12.49\00:11:14.95 because when someone has preeclampsia 00:11:14.98\00:11:16.96 that means preterm delivery is gonna happen. 00:11:16.97\00:11:18.82 Some of the highest foods I noticed on your list here 00:11:18.83\00:11:22.26 are roasted pumpkin seeds, lentils, soy beans. 00:11:22.29\00:11:25.66 These are all seeds. - Yeah. 00:11:25.69\00:11:27.11 There all things from seeds. 00:11:27.14\00:11:28.60 And those are foods high in arginine. 00:11:28.63\00:11:30.25 Arginine really improves the circulation to the uterus, 00:11:30.26\00:11:33.98 to the baby, and actually dilates the blood vessels. 00:11:33.99\00:11:38.26 When we get better circulation to the baby, 00:11:38.29\00:11:40.06 better circulation to the uterus 00:11:40.09\00:11:41.85 we have less problems with preterm delivery. 00:11:41.88\00:11:44.70 The foods that are at the top of the list there, you named them, 00:11:44.73\00:11:48.56 Pumpkin seeds, soy beans, lentils. 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.53 There's also garbanzos or chick peas, kidney beans, 00:11:50.56\00:11:54.35 lima beans, almonds also are up there. 00:11:54.38\00:11:57.50 These are foods that a woman can eat while pregnant 00:11:57.53\00:12:03.97 that are going to help her and the baby. 00:12:04.00\00:12:06.15 This is a very, you know, spiritual time in people's lives 00:12:06.18\00:12:09.38 when they have that first child. 00:12:09.41\00:12:10.66 Is there anything that you'd say as a Christian physician 00:12:10.69\00:12:14.34 as we're closing out this program on having a baby that... 00:12:14.35\00:12:18.01 What do you tell your patients when they're coming in? 00:12:18.04\00:12:20.74 in terms of maybe some spiritual insights as well? 00:12:20.77\00:12:25.09 Studies have shown when you reduce the stress of the mother 00:12:25.12\00:12:29.32 you have a much greater risk of being able 00:12:29.35\00:12:32.31 to carry that baby to full term. 00:12:32.34\00:12:34.18 And part of stress reduction is having a good, 00:12:34.19\00:12:38.15 spiritual, core belief system in place. 00:12:38.18\00:12:41.36 And that is a belief system that can be based 00:12:41.37\00:12:44.22 on something firm and foundational 00:12:44.25\00:12:46.22 such as the Word of God. 00:12:46.25\00:12:47.53 So, you know, in a program like this 00:12:47.56\00:12:51.13 that's so important, spiritual focus 00:12:51.16\00:12:53.95 but in a program like this 00:12:53.98\00:12:55.10 we couldn't cover everything someone needs to know. 00:12:55.11\00:12:57.19 What should someone who wants more information do? 00:12:57.22\00:12:59.78 I would have them contact us. 00:12:59.79\00:13:01.43 We're compiling all of this information 00:13:01.46\00:13:03.63 and putting it in one place 00:13:03.66\00:13:05.18 So someone who's going to have a baby can utilize it. 00:13:05.21\00:13:09.15 Thanks for joining us for Health for a Lifetime. 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.55
