Viewers are encouraged 00:00:11.40\00:00:13.60 to draw their own conclusions 00:00:13.61\00:00:15.08 about the information presented. 00:00:15.09\00:00:16.75 Hi and welcome to Health for a Lifestime. 00:00:49.85\00:00:51.25 Are you a vegetarian? We're gonna talk 00:00:51.88\00:00:54.27 about that today, I'm you host Don Mackintosh, 00:00:54.28\00:00:56.59 we're gonna talk about some advantages 00:00:56.76\00:00:58.48 that come by having a vegetarian diet. 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.60 And also some concerns that people have. 00:01:02.17\00:01:04.58 Talking with us about this important subject 00:01:04.79\00:01:06.46 is Dr. Nedley. And Dr. Nedley, you are from 00:01:07.02\00:01:09.56 Ardmore, Oklahoma still isn't that right? 00:01:09.57\00:01:11.42 That's right, been there for 18 years. 00:01:11.79\00:01:14.54 You travel around the world and you talk to 00:01:14.68\00:01:18.73 a lot of people about this subject. 00:01:18.74\00:01:20.60 You've written a book Proof Positive and also 00:01:21.46\00:01:23.95 Depression the Way Out, and working on 00:01:23.96\00:01:25.54 several other books. But what are some of 00:01:25.55\00:01:28.54 the advantage first, advantages rather first 00:01:28.55\00:01:31.04 off, concerning the vegetarian lifestyle that 00:01:31.05\00:01:34.35 you've discovered in your research. 00:01:34.36\00:01:36.16 Well, vegetarians do live longer, 00:01:36.97\00:01:39.45 significantly longer, if you're a careful 00:01:40.24\00:01:41.77 vegetarian you can live up to 15 years longer 00:01:41.78\00:01:45.11 that someone in the general population. 00:01:45.12\00:01:47.07 And the advantages are way beyond that. 00:01:47.68\00:01:50.81 Not only do they have less cancer, 00:01:51.54\00:01:53.73 less heart disease. But they also have 00:01:54.74\00:01:57.85 improved mental health, compared to the 00:01:57.86\00:02:00.65 average non-vegetarian. They actually 00:02:00.66\00:02:03.99 make more melatonin at night, 00:02:04.00\00:02:06.51 which can be helpful in a number of ways. 00:02:07.23\00:02:10.15 And also you can decrease the amount of 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.93 heme iron, heme iron is a pro-oxidant, 00:02:12.94\00:02:15.46 which can cause some premature aging factors 00:02:16.43\00:02:20.38 and also increase the risk of cancer and heart 00:02:20.39\00:02:22.78 disease. And if you're a totally plant-based 00:02:22.79\00:02:25.66 vegetarian, you're not getting cholesterol 00:02:25.67\00:02:28.00 in diet. So, you don't have to worry 00:02:28.01\00:02:29.25 about the oxidized cholesterol and the 00:02:29.26\00:02:32.29 significant atherosclerosis that people on cheese 00:02:32.30\00:02:36.92 and dairy and meat have to worry about. 00:02:36.93\00:02:38.90 So are there any plants that you shouldn't eat. 00:02:39.43\00:02:41.45 Yes, we wouldn't recommend eating tobacco. 00:02:42.38\00:02:44.51 There are defiantly poisonous mushrooms and 00:02:47.63\00:02:50.63 other plants that you shouldn't eat. 00:02:50.64\00:02:52.21 We're talking about edible plants that are 00:02:53.05\00:02:56.06 healthy for you. So, don't just head out in 00:02:56.07\00:02:57.91 the woods right now, alright so. 00:02:57.92\00:03:00.00 That's right. Fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables, 00:03:00.01\00:03:02.99 basically the things that are there in the 00:03:04.00\00:03:06.11 original diet, we're discovering by all these 00:03:06.12\00:03:08.08 studies that they have real advantages. 00:03:08.09\00:03:10.03 Absolutely. Well, you know someone's out there 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.31 saying oh! No, another program on vegetarianism, 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.07 well don't they know about the concerns, 00:03:15.48\00:03:17.43 what about this? What about that? 00:03:17.44\00:03:19.20 And you know every time you talk about this, 00:03:19.32\00:03:21.78 I'm sure that you have people they come 00:03:21.79\00:03:23.15 up and say what about these? 00:03:23.16\00:03:24.83 What about that? Yes, that's right, 00:03:24.84\00:03:26.33 one of the concerns is protein, 00:03:26.34\00:03:27.95 we've dealt with that on a previous topic 00:03:28.94\00:03:33.34 where we studied the protein concern out 00:03:33.35\00:03:35.84 completely. But you can get all eight essential 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.59 amino acid in abundant amounts without ever 00:03:38.60\00:03:42.32 consuming animal protein. If you have a baked 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.40 potato, if you have brown rice, 00:03:44.41\00:03:45.94 if you have over the other one's, 00:03:45.95\00:03:47.52 sweet potato. Yeah, virtually any vegetable 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.46 or grain, you're going to have all eight 00:03:51.99\00:03:55.03 essential amino acids, that if you ate enough 00:03:55.04\00:03:58.90 to maintain your weight you would get plenty 00:03:58.91\00:04:00.58 of those eight essential amino acids, 00:04:00.59\00:04:02.14 fruits would be the only exception, 00:04:02.15\00:04:03.71 if you're just a fruitarian, you make short 00:04:03.72\00:04:06.89 of yourself. And those eight essential 00:04:06.90\00:04:08.73 amino acids. Yeah, if it's just blueberries 00:04:08.74\00:04:11.13 you probably blew it. Alright, what about 00:04:11.49\00:04:14.01 someone say, what about your iron, you're 00:04:14.02\00:04:15.69 not gonna get enough iron? 00:04:15.70\00:04:17.32 Eat these snails. No, you can get plenty 00:04:18.68\00:04:22.91 of iron in the vegetarian diet; 00:04:22.92\00:04:24.98 it's true that you can be on an unhealthy 00:04:25.82\00:04:28.67 vegetarian diet, that is short on iron, okay. 00:04:28.68\00:04:31.90 And so just because you're a vegetarian does 00:04:32.37\00:04:34.57 not guarantee that you're going to get enough 00:04:34.58\00:04:36.64 iron. In fact you can, it's kind of interesting, 00:04:36.65\00:04:40.72 one of the physician who utilizes may lot 00:04:40.73\00:04:43.12 and consults may particular for 00:04:43.13\00:04:44.61 gastroenteritis problem, he likes to joke about 00:04:44.62\00:04:47.71 my vegetarian diet. And he will say 00:04:47.72\00:04:50.26 consult Dr. Nedley regarding psoriasis of the 00:04:50.37\00:04:53.65 liver due to vegetarian product. 00:04:53.66\00:04:56.32 Well, of course he's talking about alcohol, 00:04:56.99\00:04:58.90 alcohol is a vegetarian product, 00:04:59.37\00:05:00.90 but it's not a healthy vegetarian product. 00:05:01.02\00:05:03.21 And some vegetarians might be eating cake and 00:05:03.22\00:05:05.94 ice-cream and soda pops all day along and 00:05:05.95\00:05:08.77 that's not gonna be healthy, 00:05:08.83\00:05:10.05 that's gonna be very unhealthy vegetarian diet. 00:05:10.81\00:05:13.10 And so you can short yourself in iron but 00:05:13.62\00:05:15.82 what we have is a graphic, are the foods 00:05:15.83\00:05:18.41 that are pretty high in iron. You can see that 00:05:18.42\00:05:24.53 Avocados at the bottom of the screen are 00:05:24.64\00:05:26.56 gonna have 2 mgs of iron and Mangoes 2mgs 00:05:26.57\00:05:29.93 and Whole Wheat Flour are 4½ mgs. 00:05:30.02\00:05:32.81 And by the way White Flour virtually doesn't 00:05:32.82\00:05:35.58 have any, in fact they have to try enriched it, 00:05:35.59\00:05:38.21 they add 20 percent of the iron back, 00:05:38.22\00:05:40.45 Almonds, excellent source of iron 5 mgs of iron. 00:05:41.55\00:05:45.45 And than we have foods that are even 00:05:46.19\00:05:47.62 higher yet in iron on the next graphic. 00:05:47.63\00:05:51.13 So, like rice bran, and these types of things 00:05:53.55\00:05:56.63 even higher. Well, yeah rice bran is very low, 00:05:56.64\00:06:00.31 of course they're concentrated foods like 00:06:00.47\00:06:03.46 rice bran, and tofu, the concentrated food 00:06:03.47\00:06:05.60 very high in iron. Sunflower Seeds are quite 00:06:05.61\00:06:09.83 high in iron, you can see 9mgs of iron, 00:06:09.93\00:06:12.70 Soybeans 8, Spinach is actually an excellent 00:06:12.71\00:06:15.64 source of iron as well. Okay. 00:06:15.65\00:06:18.17 And so it's easy to get enough iron. 00:06:18.18\00:06:19.93 Now how much iron does meat have in a serving? 00:06:19.94\00:06:22.09 About 2mgs. Not very much. 00:06:22.10\00:06:24.10 And so you know the heme iron is more readily 00:06:24.11\00:06:26.80 absorbed, it can be absorb maybe almost twice 00:06:26.81\00:06:29.52 as readily as plant iron. But you can see most 00:06:29.53\00:06:34.25 those plant foods have 4mgs of more of iron 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.91 in it per serving and so that would be, 00:06:36.92\00:06:40.92 it's very easy to get enough iron, 00:06:41.79\00:06:43.40 our vegetarian diet. Or you talked about 00:06:43.41\00:06:45.28 something there you said that heme iron 00:06:45.29\00:06:46.96 is easier to absorb than the plant iron, 00:06:46.97\00:06:49.85 what are the things we can do to enhance 00:06:49.86\00:06:52.24 the absorption of iron? Yeah, it's even 00:06:52.25\00:06:55.11 the non-heme iron can be more readily 00:06:55.12\00:06:57.36 absorbed if we pay attention to that. 00:06:57.37\00:07:00.15 And factors that decrease the absorption 00:07:00.49\00:07:03.23 of iron, Caffeine is one of those factors that 00:07:03.24\00:07:05.69 significantly decreases the absorption. 00:07:05.70\00:07:07.63 Decaf will also do it because of the tannins. 00:07:07.80\00:07:10.80 And calcium supplements and dairy also decrease 00:07:11.15\00:07:15.22 the absorption of iron. Being an athlete does 00:07:15.69\00:07:19.81 not decrease absorption, but increases red cell 00:07:19.82\00:07:22.97 turnover, increasing the need for more iron. 00:07:22.98\00:07:25.46 Because they wear-out sooner. 00:07:25.69\00:07:26.87 That's right; this is one of the reasons why 00:07:26.96\00:07:28.49 athletes need a little more iron. 00:07:28.50\00:07:30.83 In fact I've seen many runners for instance, 00:07:30.84\00:07:33.01 particularly female runners short themselves 00:07:33.22\00:07:36.54 of iron and of course that will effect their 00:07:36.55\00:07:38.06 running ability. Well, you know the 00:07:38.07\00:07:40.35 average red blood cell, well lives a 120 days 00:07:40.36\00:07:43.27 I think I remember. What happen when 00:07:43.28\00:07:45.74 you a runner? About 90 days. About 90 days, 00:07:45.75\00:07:48.77 yeah, it just gets worn-out; it's going 00:07:48.90\00:07:50.06 around the loop too quick. 00:07:50.07\00:07:51.33 And I guess so, we're not exactly sure why 00:07:51.34\00:07:53.71 it's destroyed prematurely but it hasn't, 00:07:53.72\00:07:55.65 may just be the process of running itself 00:07:55.66\00:07:57.89 through those capillaries that smashes 00:07:58.56\00:08:01.23 them and destroys them. Well, you know 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.69 elephants and rhinoceroses and some of 00:08:04.77\00:08:07.26 these animals are huge animals. 00:08:07.27\00:08:08.67 But I do hear this concern coming up that, 00:08:08.68\00:08:12.33 children that are raised with a vegetarian 00:08:12.95\00:08:15.00 lifestyle maybe stunted in their growth. 00:08:15.01\00:08:17.76 Yes, actually that is a false concern, 00:08:18.73\00:08:24.23 but there was an interesting study done by 00:08:25.09\00:08:27.13 Dr. Sabate in California showing a comparison 00:08:27.14\00:08:30.69 of the growth of vegetarian children with 00:08:30.70\00:08:32.28 meat-consuming children in the same 00:08:32.29\00:08:33.82 geographic area in Southern California. 00:08:33.83\00:08:36.35 Those Meat-eating children were slightly taller 00:08:37.84\00:08:41.24 than the vegetarians until age ten. 00:08:41.57\00:08:44.45 And then after age 10, the vegetarians caught 00:08:45.16\00:08:49.07 up and by age 18, the vegetarians had 00:08:49.08\00:08:52.06 surpassed their meat-eating counterparts, 00:08:52.07\00:08:54.11 being at least an inch taller as adults. 00:08:54.12\00:08:56.52 And so lot of individuals don't realize although 00:08:57.63\00:09:00.99 as a young child the meat-eating children 00:09:01.06\00:09:04.09 tend to, shoot up a little quicker, 00:09:04.10\00:09:06.51 shoot up a little quicker. Is that cause of the 00:09:06.52\00:09:07.58 protein, meat protein. Yeah, that's because of 00:09:07.84\00:09:10.12 the higher protein, but what happens is? 00:09:10.13\00:09:12.65 Their bony plates close, quicker too soon and 00:09:12.75\00:09:17.30 so they quit growing. And the vegetarians 00:09:17.31\00:09:19.78 continue to grow often up until age 18 00:09:19.79\00:09:22.45 they're still growing. And so they end up 00:09:22.46\00:09:25.13 being taller. Well, that's interesting, 00:09:25.14\00:09:28.48 so another miss kind of crashed and crush there. 00:09:28.49\00:09:31.78 Well, another big concern I mean I hear it 00:09:32.00\00:09:33.82 a lot over the years as the people in my church 00:09:34.02\00:09:36.86 have done health programs and of course I'm 00:09:36.87\00:09:38.64 involved in those. And that is what about 00:09:38.65\00:09:41.94 vitamin B12 and of course that's a concern, 00:09:41.95\00:09:45.50 how do you answer that, 00:09:47.14\00:09:48.11 what's the latest and greatest? 00:09:48.12\00:09:49.39 Well, that is probably the single biggest concern 00:09:49.83\00:09:53.91 for plant based vegetarians is B12. 00:09:55.22\00:09:59.50 And the reason for it is, B12 isn't really in 00:09:59.94\00:10:02.30 plant foods, it is not made by plants nor is 00:10:02.31\00:10:06.62 it made by animals. And actually B12 is made 00:10:06.63\00:10:09.87 by bacteria and interestingly, 00:10:09.88\00:10:13.25 we have a lot of bacteria in our mouth and 00:10:13.26\00:10:17.11 those bacteria can make B12. 00:10:17.12\00:10:19.06 And so if you don't brush your teeth a lot, 00:10:19.58\00:10:22.16 you might actually absorb more B12 and get 00:10:22.19\00:10:25.20 more B12. You know we're not recommending 00:10:25.21\00:10:26.27 although. We're not recommending, okay. 00:10:26.28\00:10:28.17 B12 is also you know in the dirt and so if we 00:10:28.68\00:10:32.78 don't wash our fruits and vegetables we'll get 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.88 a little more B12. Okay, these are two ways 00:10:35.89\00:10:38.72 you're not really recommending. 00:10:38.73\00:10:39.86 And also your colleen makes a huge amount 00:10:41.35\00:10:43.81 of B12, because your colleen is teaming 00:10:43.82\00:10:46.32 with bacteria. A lot of people are not aware 00:10:46.33\00:10:48.49 that one forth of the weight of your bowel 00:10:48.50\00:10:50.77 movement is bacteria. I was not aware of that. 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.77 Thank you for making me aware of it, 00:10:56.62\00:10:58.25 okay, so the bacteria is there. 00:10:58.55\00:10:59.93 The bacteria is there its making lots of B12, 00:11:00.13\00:11:02.25 the problem is B12 is absorbed in the distal 00:11:02.26\00:11:04.55 ileum, close to the colon, but there is a 00:11:04.56\00:11:06.77 valve there for good reason. 00:11:06.78\00:11:08.88 So, we don't desterilize the small bowel, 00:11:08.89\00:11:11.22 but if that valve is incompetent you will 00:11:12.03\00:11:14.19 make plenty of B12. I mean not make it, 00:11:14.20\00:11:17.53 you will actually absorb plenty of B12 and 00:11:17.73\00:11:19.93 addition to your colon making as and 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.46 so you will never need a B12 supplement. 00:11:21.47\00:11:23.65 You can't count on your valve being decompetent. 00:11:23.66\00:11:26.56 No, not unless you've had surgery or if you 00:11:26.57\00:11:27.59 have a genetic issue there. Alright. 00:11:27.60\00:11:30.01 And so this maybe I don't know for sure with 00:11:30.97\00:11:34.45 this maybe one of the reasons why even 00:11:34.46\00:11:36.95 some plant base vegetarians never run into 00:11:37.08\00:11:40.20 B12 problems. This has been a confusing factor 00:11:40.21\00:11:43.54 for many people; some people never consume 00:11:43.55\00:11:46.57 any animal products whatsoever. 00:11:46.58\00:11:48.30 And we know that they're not eating foods 00:11:49.69\00:11:51.32 that are high in B12, we check their B12 levels 00:11:51.33\00:11:53.51 they're fine. They were up there where they 00:11:53.52\00:11:55.97 normal individual is however there are some 00:11:55.98\00:11:59.91 vegetarians, a significant percentage of 00:11:59.92\00:12:02.12 vegetarians that are plant based that will start 00:12:02.13\00:12:05.16 to run into B12 problems. 00:12:05.17\00:12:06.63 And it takes a year after they changed their 00:12:06.68\00:12:08.72 diet before this starts to occur because B12 00:12:08.73\00:12:11.82 lasts in the system, it's stored in the system 00:12:11.83\00:12:15.32 for up to a year. But then after that, 00:12:16.05\00:12:18.43 the B12 levels begin to drop and they can 00:12:18.44\00:12:22.55 drop to the place where actually disease results. 00:12:23.28\00:12:26.24 Depression can resolve, fatigue, 00:12:26.66\00:12:28.37 loss of energy, anemia can resolve and even 00:12:28.46\00:12:31.63 nervous, permanent neurological deficits can 00:12:31.79\00:12:34.87 occur if the B12 levels are extremely low. 00:12:34.88\00:12:37.08 Now, that's very dangerous, 00:12:37.44\00:12:38.41 we're gonna talk a little bit about that, 00:12:38.42\00:12:40.20 because I've don't, you don't wanna minimize 00:12:40.21\00:12:42.62 this problem, it can be a real problem. 00:12:42.63\00:12:45.07 It can be a real problem, in fact I know some 00:12:45.40\00:12:47.95 individuals that, well one individual in 00:12:48.01\00:12:51.75 particular was on a very good diet. 00:12:51.76\00:12:54.93 But was not concerned about the B12 issue, 00:12:55.52\00:12:58.21 she had extremely low B12 levels for a longtime 00:12:59.05\00:13:02.63 and ended up with a permanent neurologic 00:13:02.64\00:13:04.43 deficit, I mean she walks bent over. 00:13:04.44\00:13:07.45 She have no position sense, meaning that if 00:13:08.66\00:13:11.06 she were to close her eyes she'd fall over. 00:13:11.07\00:13:13.50 Because her posterior columns in her spinal cord 00:13:14.24\00:13:16.71 are no longer active, because they didn't have 00:13:16.72\00:13:18.84 B12 in them and it's a crippling disorder that 00:13:18.85\00:13:24.21 she experienced simply due to not enough B12 00:13:24.73\00:13:27.93 in the diet. We're talking with 00:13:27.94\00:13:30.05 Dr. Neil Nedley, we're talking about common 00:13:30.06\00:13:32.88 concerns that come up concerning the vegetarian 00:13:33.09\00:13:36.06 lifestyle. We're talking about some of the 00:13:36.07\00:13:37.51 advantages; we wanna continue with those 00:13:37.52\00:13:39.55 concerns and continue our discussion 00:13:39.56\00:13:41.87 concerning B12. Join us when we comeback. 00:13:42.06\00:13:44.71 Are you confused about the endless stream 00:13:47.24\00:13:49.48 of new and often contradictory health 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.68 information. With companies trying to sell new 00:13:51.69\00:13:54.47 drugs and special interest groups paying for 00:13:54.48\00:13:56.84 studies that spin the fact? 00:13:56.85\00:13:58.39 Where can you find a common sense approach 00:13:58.95\00:14:00.96 to health? One way is to ask for your free 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.53 copy of Dr. Arnott's 24 realistic ways to 00:14:03.54\00:14:06.65 improve your health. Dr. Timothy Arnott and 00:14:06.66\00:14:09.21 the Lifestyle Center of America produced this 00:14:09.22\00:14:11.38 helpful booklet of 24 short practical health 00:14:11.39\00:14:14.17 tips based on scientific research and the Bible, 00:14:14.18\00:14:16.99 that will help you live longer, 00:14:17.43\00:14:18.65 happier and healthier. We've been talking about the 00:14:51.02\00:14:53.14 vegetarian lifestyle and its advantages, 00:14:53.15\00:14:55.98 but also some concerns that had come up. 00:14:55.99\00:14:57.70 And join us to talk about this is Dr. Neil Nedley, 00:14:57.71\00:15:01.18 we're glad you with us and we've talked 00:15:01.38\00:15:02.88 about some of these advantages. 00:15:02.89\00:15:04.24 And we've talked about some other concerns 00:15:04.68\00:15:06.61 and we've entered the discussion about 00:15:07.17\00:15:08.81 vitamin B12. You know I heard a number of 00:15:08.82\00:15:11.78 years ago that there are more meat-eaters 00:15:11.79\00:15:14.40 that have vitamin B12 deficiency than they are 00:15:14.41\00:15:17.02 vegetarians is that correct. That's true, 00:15:17.03\00:15:18.83 yeah a lot of people think well if I'm a meat-eater, 00:15:19.49\00:15:21.64 this is something I don't have to worry about. 00:15:21.65\00:15:23.29 Because meat has more B12 and it simply 00:15:23.30\00:15:26.38 because as more bacteria in it, 00:15:26.39\00:15:28.06 you know the bacteria is what produces the 00:15:29.20\00:15:31.19 B12 and meat the longer it sits around, 00:15:31.20\00:15:35.72 the longer those bacteria have a chance to 00:15:35.73\00:15:38.12 produce their stuff the more B12 might have in it. 00:15:38.20\00:15:41.95 But the problem with people is the age, 00:15:42.38\00:15:45.77 is they tend to produce less intrinsic factor 00:15:45.94\00:15:48.82 in their stomach. And the parietal cells in their 00:15:48.83\00:15:51.65 stomach just won't work like they used too. 00:15:51.66\00:15:54.13 And thus they're not able to absorb the B12, 00:15:54.79\00:15:57.55 so even though meat may have plenty of B12, 00:15:57.59\00:15:59.60 there is two problems with meat as a B12 00:15:59.61\00:16:01.69 source number 1, B12 can be tightly bond to 00:16:01.70\00:16:05.66 the fibers in the meat itself that may not be 00:16:05.67\00:16:07.92 absorbs that readily. And then secondly, 00:16:07.93\00:16:10.89 if they're not making enough intrinsic factor 00:16:10.90\00:16:13.14 they're certainly not gonna be able to absorb it. 00:16:13.15\00:16:15.09 So, regardless if you're a vegetarian or a 00:16:15.83\00:16:18.13 meat-eater you need to be aware of the 00:16:18.14\00:16:20.52 importance of vitamin B12. Over 90 percent 00:16:20.53\00:16:23.74 of people with B12 deficiency are meat-eaters 00:16:23.84\00:16:26.54 and thus I check it out routinely in people as 00:16:27.26\00:16:31.94 part of their general health physical. 00:16:31.95\00:16:33.91 Because B12 deficiency is so common, 00:16:33.92\00:16:35.97 particularly if someone's over the age of 50, 00:16:35.98\00:16:38.44 I'll be checking that out because that's when 00:16:39.06\00:16:40.72 it become even a lot more common. 00:16:40.73\00:16:42.29 Okay we've talked about the concerns; 00:16:42.95\00:16:45.34 we've talked about the neuronal concerns, 00:16:45.35\00:16:47.90 the nerves and different thing when you talked 00:16:48.37\00:16:50.15 about the lady who had real deficits as a result 00:16:50.16\00:16:52.84 of that. What about B12 deficiency in brain 00:16:52.85\00:16:55.10 health? Well, there is quite a link, 00:16:55.11\00:16:57.64 B12 is important for brain health. 00:16:58.76\00:17:01.76 B12 deficiency has been linked to diseases such 00:17:01.95\00:17:06.16 as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease has 00:17:06.17\00:17:10.33 also been linked. Really. And other degenerative 00:17:10.34\00:17:14.06 diseases of the brain can be linked to be B12 00:17:15.51\00:17:17.76 deficiency; depression actually can be cause 00:17:17.77\00:17:20.84 by B12 deficiency. If we don't have enough B12 00:17:20.85\00:17:23.63 around, we won't make enough SAM-e in the 00:17:23.64\00:17:26.20 brain, and SAM-e is needed for the final step 00:17:26.21\00:17:29.45 to give the methyl donation to make Dopamine, 00:17:29.52\00:17:32.12 Serotonin and Norepinephrine, 00:17:32.24\00:17:34.69 three important neurotransmitters in 00:17:35.01\00:17:36.80 the brain. And that's why when someone is B12 00:17:36.81\00:17:39.17 deficient we gave him a B12 shot, 00:17:39.18\00:17:41.04 boy within 24hrs, they've got energy, 00:17:41.05\00:17:43.48 they're feeling a lot better, they're making 00:17:44.31\00:17:45.95 those three neurotransmitters again. 00:17:45.96\00:17:47.79 Well, what about B12 and homocysteine? 00:17:48.50\00:17:50.51 This is some of the new evidence homocysteine 00:17:51.19\00:17:53.80 is a, can be a toxin, it's an amino acid that's 00:17:53.81\00:17:58.28 produced in excess if we don't have enough B12 00:17:58.29\00:18:00.95 or enough B6 or Folate around. 00:18:00.96\00:18:03.16 And high homocysteine levels have been linked 00:18:03.52\00:18:05.82 to certain nervous system problems including 00:18:05.95\00:18:08.57 Alzheimer's as well as increasing, dramatically 00:18:08.58\00:18:12.01 increasing risk of heart disease and stroke. 00:18:12.02\00:18:14.37 And so you know interestingly you can be 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.13 on a vegetarian diet which is gonna decrease 00:18:17.14\00:18:19.26 your incidence of heart disease and stroke. 00:18:19.27\00:18:21.00 But if your B12 levels are real low your 00:18:21.01\00:18:22.78 homocysteine can be up and thus you may have 00:18:22.79\00:18:25.25 a risk factor for heart disease that isn't 00:18:25.26\00:18:27.20 uncovered by looking at your cholesterol levels. 00:18:27.21\00:18:29.57 And so that's why I've began the process in 00:18:29.99\00:18:32.24 my office when I see patients of not only 00:18:32.25\00:18:34.42 checking their cholesterol levels but also 00:18:34.43\00:18:36.63 checking their homocysteine levels, 00:18:36.64\00:18:38.12 you may wanna get your doctor to do that 00:18:38.13\00:18:40.56 for you. And if you find out that it's elevated, 00:18:40.57\00:18:42.98 it could be related to deficiency of B12. 00:18:42.99\00:18:45.40 That's right and that's when we would check 00:18:45.44\00:18:47.09 the B12 levels or the folate levels, 00:18:47.10\00:18:50.22 but B12 deficiency is a lot more common than 00:18:50.30\00:18:52.65 folate deficiency actually. What about 00:18:52.66\00:18:54.91 drinking milk, I mean, will that take care of my 00:18:54.92\00:18:56.92 B12 problems? Well, this is one of the biggest 00:18:56.93\00:18:59.92 myths out there and it's a myth that's also 00:18:59.93\00:19:02.16 present among Seventh-day Adventist. 00:19:02.17\00:19:05.05 You know interestingly I've heard some people 00:19:05.12\00:19:07.80 stayed if you're on a plant based diet and 00:19:07.88\00:19:12.17 you're not taking a B12 supplement all you need 00:19:12.18\00:19:14.39 to do is drink milk and you'll get plenty of B12 00:19:14.40\00:19:17.72 and you won't need to worry about it. 00:19:17.73\00:19:19.07 That is actually not true, milk is not a reliable 00:19:20.10\00:19:23.93 source of B12 and we have a graphic that 00:19:24.04\00:19:26.95 explains this. Assuring adequate B12 intake is 00:19:26.96\00:19:32.55 often cited as one of the main reasons for adding 00:19:32.56\00:19:35.23 dairy to a vegan diet. However not only is 00:19:35.24\00:19:39.26 evidence lacking to support such a conclusion, 00:19:39.27\00:19:41.50 that there is actually data to the contrary. 00:19:41.51\00:19:43.48 A 1999 Australian study eloquently illustrate the 00:19:43.95\00:19:46.83 fact that dairy doesn't necessarily prevent vitamin 00:19:46.84\00:19:49.99 B12 deficiency. This was a study that was done 00:19:50.00\00:19:54.32 on Seventh-day Adventist ministers who were 00:19:54.33\00:19:56.32 not using B12 supplements, they were both vegans 00:19:56.33\00:19:59.69 which means totally plant based vegetarians or 00:19:59.70\00:20:02.98 lacto-ovo vegetarians and both groups tended 00:20:02.99\00:20:06.61 to have lower vitamin B12 levels than those 00:20:06.62\00:20:09.14 who ate meat. And in fact, in that particular 00:20:09.15\00:20:12.27 study, the lacto-ovo vegetarians were just as 00:20:12.28\00:20:15.61 low as the vegan vegetarians. 00:20:15.62\00:20:18.29 And so don't rest assured that you're getting 00:20:19.38\00:20:22.21 B12 from those sources Okay, so even 00:20:22.22\00:20:26.72 though vegetarians have a lower incidence of vitamin 00:20:26.73\00:20:29.77 B12 deficiency, they need to be aware of it 00:20:29.78\00:20:33.39 and so also do meat-eaters. But what are 00:20:33.57\00:20:36.72 some sources then of vitamin B12 that we 00:20:36.73\00:20:40.53 can rely on, we don't wanna get it from the 00:20:40.54\00:20:42.94 bacteria in our teeth by not brushing our teeth, 00:20:42.95\00:20:44.92 we don't particularly wanna get it from our 00:20:45.27\00:20:46.88 large bowel and all that things that we mentioned, 00:20:46.89\00:20:49.35 so what can we look? Well, you know first 00:20:49.36\00:20:51.68 I must correct you a little bit there; 00:20:51.69\00:20:54.95 it's true that if we take a look at all groups 00:20:55.34\00:20:58.25 of people that are B12 deficient. 00:20:58.26\00:21:00.54 Ninety percent of them or more would be 00:21:00.77\00:21:02.73 meat-eaters. Right. But as far as the incidence 00:21:02.74\00:21:06.44 of B12 deficiency is concerned, the incidence 00:21:06.45\00:21:08.97 is higher in vegetarians. Okay. 00:21:08.98\00:21:11.11 Then it is in the meat -eating population and 00:21:11.34\00:21:13.19 so that's why it is the big vegetarian concern, 00:21:13.20\00:21:16.94 because it's kind of the only factor that people 00:21:16.95\00:21:19.26 can find out there where vegetarians might 00:21:19.27\00:21:22.31 have more of a problem than the average 00:21:22.32\00:21:24.82 meat-eater. But having said that it doesn't need 00:21:24.83\00:21:29.61 to be a problem, if vegetarians are 00:21:29.62\00:21:32.68 consuming sources of B12. And these are 00:21:32.69\00:21:36.78 some of the sources of B12; we have them 00:21:36.79\00:21:39.06 up there on the screen. Organic soybeans 00:21:39.41\00:21:42.88 would have very low amounts, organic will 00:21:42.89\00:21:45.56 means grown in heavy in manure and of course 00:21:45.57\00:21:47.59 you might get some B12 just through osmosis 00:21:47.60\00:21:50.26 through the plants that way. Egg Whites 0.2, 00:21:50.27\00:21:54.43 Skim Milk 0.3, Soy Milk 1.0 and of course that's 00:21:54.44\00:21:59.00 because it is supplemented. Total cereal 00:21:59.01\00:22:02.53 will have a 100 percent of your daily 00:22:03.13\00:22:04.95 requirements, which is 6 micrograms per day. 00:22:04.96\00:22:08.66 And then there were other additional sources 00:22:09.92\00:22:12.36 of B12. Okay, so Total Cereal, a Product 19 00:22:12.37\00:22:17.56 Cereal. Fortified Soy or Rice Milk is hard to find 00:22:17.57\00:22:21.49 any milk out there right now there are not 00:22:21.59\00:22:23.77 supplement with B12 because this has become 00:22:23.78\00:22:26.03 an issue. And then there many supplements that 00:22:26.04\00:22:28.12 you can take out there, vitamin supplements 00:22:28.13\00:22:30.32 and B12 supplements that are out there. 00:22:30.33\00:22:32.31 If you were to consume cows milk as a source 00:22:33.23\00:22:36.28 of B12, the skim milk would be preferable. 00:22:36.29\00:22:38.48 But again that's not a guarantee that your 00:22:38.49\00:22:41.24 B12 levels are gonna go up that much, 00:22:41.25\00:22:43.17 because they are actually as less as cows 00:22:43.18\00:22:45.24 milk and there is in most of the soy milks today. 00:22:45.25\00:22:47.56 Yeah, okay, so those are the vegetarian 00:22:48.36\00:22:52.78 sources of B12, there were some overall 00:22:52.79\00:22:56.68 sources and then some. Yeah and what I 00:22:56.69\00:22:58.76 would like to recommend to the average 00:22:58.77\00:23:01.32 vegetarian out there. Is if you don't have a 00:23:01.33\00:23:04.16 source, a laboratory source where you can 00:23:04.29\00:23:06.23 get your B12 level checked every year which 00:23:06.24\00:23:08.41 I can get, I mean our own laboratory does a 00:23:08.42\00:23:11.64 very good analysis of B12. But if you don't 00:23:11.65\00:23:14.32 have an access to that, just be safe and take 00:23:14.33\00:23:16.75 a B12 supplement, they are very cheap, 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.88 they're very effective. You can absorb them 00:23:19.90\00:23:22.46 under your tongue or if you chew them, 00:23:22.47\00:23:24.31 they get more readily absorb, 00:23:24.32\00:23:25.65 you don't wanna swallow and hold. 00:23:25.66\00:23:27.22 Because you're not gonna absorb them as 00:23:27.23\00:23:28.77 much, 100 micrograms a day would be plenty, 00:23:28.78\00:23:31.71 you only need 6 but a 100 micrograms is 00:23:32.65\00:23:35.16 an assurance and there is no problem of 00:23:35.17\00:23:36.66 getting that much B12, even a 1000 micrograms 00:23:36.67\00:23:39.93 a day is not a problem. But if you're consuming 00:23:39.94\00:23:43.79 huge amounts like 3000 micrograms a day, 00:23:43.80\00:23:46.60 then that will start to began to shut down 00:23:46.61\00:23:48.47 your melatonin levels. You know an interesting 00:23:48.48\00:23:51.58 question that you may have thought about 00:23:51.59\00:23:53.96 so I'm just gonna throw it out there and that 00:23:53.97\00:23:55.48 is you know we often talk about how science 00:23:55.49\00:23:59.05 validates the diet of Genesis 1:29. 00:23:59.06\00:24:02.20 And then adding the vegetables later in 00:24:02.71\00:24:04.37 Genesis chapter 3. But these seems to be 00:24:04.38\00:24:07.68 kind of that the one that, it doesn't seem 00:24:07.69\00:24:09.95 to hold true to. What have you thought 00:24:09.96\00:24:12.24 about that over the years? Well, you know 00:24:12.25\00:24:14.99 and that's why some people have an issue 00:24:15.00\00:24:17.84 with this kind of you know refused to consider 00:24:17.95\00:24:23.37 B12 supplements. It's kind of interesting 00:24:24.02\00:24:25.96 Ellen White spoke about this, there were people 00:24:25.97\00:24:28.85 in her day who had totally gone to plant 00:24:28.86\00:24:32.10 base sources of nutrition. And they didn't 00:24:32.11\00:24:34.98 have B12 supplements back down. 00:24:34.99\00:24:36.98 And they were getting ill. Dr. Crest was one of 00:24:37.30\00:24:39.79 them and she told him specifically to get back 00:24:39.80\00:24:43.62 on dairy and eggs, particularly eggs she said, 00:24:43.77\00:24:47.05 more so than dairy. You see eggs were a 00:24:47.29\00:24:49.03 better source of B12 than the milk was. 00:24:49.04\00:24:52.76 And than she said that eventually God would 00:24:53.46\00:24:56.93 work this problem out, but she said for now 00:24:56.94\00:25:02.10 you need the animal foods. And of course I 00:25:02.11\00:25:05.31 think he has worked it out simply because 00:25:05.32\00:25:07.23 B12 is so readily available and it's the only 00:25:07.30\00:25:09.48 thing that's not there. Now, in the original diet 00:25:09.49\00:25:12.45 they probably was B12 there or you know, 00:25:13.13\00:25:15.63 we didn't have to worry about washing the dirt 00:25:15.64\00:25:17.83 away. You know, you just got the fruits and 00:25:17.84\00:25:22.69 the vegetables from the garden and what came 00:25:22.70\00:25:24.79 with them was probably the B12 there. 00:25:24.80\00:25:28.08 But now due to the pesticides and those 00:25:28.09\00:25:29.96 types of things everyone wants to wash 00:25:29.97\00:25:31.84 their fruits and vegetables. 00:25:31.85\00:25:33.16 And so we maybe washing away some of 00:25:34.08\00:25:37.42 the B12 there, we don't really realize all 00:25:37.43\00:25:40.27 the intricacies of it. We do know that about 00:25:40.28\00:25:42.87 half of vegetarians will never run into a B12 00:25:42.88\00:25:45.34 problem, even though they are totally plant based. 00:25:45.35\00:25:48.19 The other half can and so just to be on the sure 00:25:48.47\00:25:52.59 side just take a B12 supplement like I said 00:25:52.60\00:25:55.90 it's cheap, it's effective and it will prevent 00:25:56.02\00:25:58.83 your a lot of problems down the road. 00:25:58.84\00:26:01.41 You have the couple of graphics on Omega-3 00:26:02.23\00:26:04.51 talk me about that briefly. 00:26:05.13\00:26:06.34 That's another concern of vegetarians, 00:26:06.35\00:26:08.48 that they may not can be getting enough 00:26:08.49\00:26:09.77 Omega-3, Omega-3 primarily is present in fish 00:26:09.78\00:26:12.58 and one of the graphic shows us the fish that 00:26:13.17\00:26:15.74 are high in Omega-3. Drum fish, Tuna, Salmon 00:26:15.75\00:26:19.78 higher yet, Halibut and Mackerel or I should 00:26:19.79\00:26:23.17 to say Atlantic Mackerel. But they are plant 00:26:23.18\00:26:25.17 sources. Yes, I should mention that all of 00:26:25.18\00:26:27.97 those fish that are high in Omega-3 they're 00:26:27.98\00:26:30.21 all clean fish, they're all fins and scales. 00:26:30.22\00:26:32.35 Okay. The fish that are not clean, 00:26:32.61\00:26:34.09 very poor sources of Omega-3. 00:26:34.16\00:26:37.01 Okay and then what about plant sources there? 00:26:37.15\00:26:38.83 Plant sources are the preferable way because 00:26:38.84\00:26:40.57 you don't have to worry about mercury and 00:26:40.58\00:26:41.95 you don't have to worry about toxins. 00:26:41.96\00:26:43.53 And the plant sources are up on the screen, 00:26:43.78\00:26:45.86 Almonds come out pretty good there, 00:26:45.87\00:26:48.07 Green soybeans much higher in Omega-3, 00:26:48.41\00:26:50.41 again wheat germ if you're eating white bread 00:26:50.42\00:26:52.35 you're not getting your Omega-3, 00:26:52.36\00:26:53.71 you're getting it through that whole wheat or 00:26:53.72\00:26:55.59 the wheat germ. Black Walnuts are a 00:26:55.60\00:26:57.12 1000mgs and English Walnuts are higher than 00:26:57.13\00:26:59.89 Black Walnuts. And the highest source is 00:26:59.90\00:27:03.20 Flaxseed as far as plant source, 00:27:03.29\00:27:06.22 there is also a seed called Chia seeds they 00:27:06.23\00:27:08.07 were almost as high as Flaxseed. 00:27:08.08\00:27:10.09 And so you can get Omega-3 if you're paying 00:27:10.54\00:27:13.53 attention to those types of foods in your diet 00:27:13.54\00:27:17.20 and eating them occasionally. 00:27:17.21\00:27:18.91 Well, thank you so much for being with us today 00:27:19.94\00:27:21.63 Dr. Nedley and thank you for your webpage as 00:27:21.64\00:27:24.27 well www.nedley publishing.com and 00:27:24.28\00:27:26.42 www.Dr.nedley publishing.com, a lot of 00:27:26.55\00:27:28.81 resources there for our viewers as well. 00:27:28.82\00:27:31.19 Thank you for being with us, we've talked 00:27:31.56\00:27:32.97 about the advantages of a vegetarian diet. 00:27:32.98\00:27:35.23 And they are many, they're far out way the 00:27:35.91\00:27:39.29 concerns, but those concerns are valid as well, 00:27:39.30\00:27:42.55 don't just minimize them.
