And you know 00:01:19.05\00:01:20.98 I've had occasion to work with you 00:01:20.99\00:01:22.53 on a lot of different things whether 00:01:22.54\00:01:24.69 it be depression recovery seminars, 00:01:24.70\00:01:26.62 or talking about the book proof positive, 00:01:26.63\00:01:29.20 or other various health venues and lectures. 00:01:29.21\00:01:32.88 And you know you're practices 00:01:32.89\00:01:35.45 kind of multi focal, I mean, 00:01:35.46\00:01:37.81 it doesn't mean that he who is 00:01:37.82\00:01:39.25 everywhere is nowhere, 00:01:39.26\00:01:40.23 it's just that you know, 00:01:40.24\00:01:41.42 you talk about cardiology and 00:01:41.43\00:01:44.35 do a lot of that in Internal Medicine 00:01:44.36\00:01:45.93 and Gastroenterology and then a 00:01:45.94\00:01:48.05 preventive medicine as well. 00:01:48.06\00:01:49.66 So you know, 00:01:49.67\00:01:51.45 we're just glad you took time from 00:01:51.46\00:01:53.64 such a busy schedule to be with us today. 00:01:53.65\00:01:55.51 Well thank you, it's, very glad to be here. 00:01:55.52\00:01:58.01 Now you know, 00:01:58.02\00:01:58.99 I'm sure in clinical medicine and then also 00:01:59.00\00:02:03.05 when you're teaching that you deal 00:02:03.06\00:02:05.61 with this subject a lot. 00:02:05.62\00:02:06.74 You see that people have gotten 00:02:06.75\00:02:08.33 into all kinds of problems and 00:02:08.34\00:02:10.52 they need to make positive changes and 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.02 then they have problems sticking with them. 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.91 Well you know 80 percent of the patients 00:02:15.92\00:02:19.35 that we see in a hospital setting are 00:02:19.36\00:02:22.31 there because of their addictive habits. 00:02:22.32\00:02:25.25 If you take habits that they know are 00:02:25.26\00:02:28.26 harmful to them and if they're able to 00:02:28.27\00:02:32.39 overcome those habits we would have 00:02:32.40\00:02:34.62 80 percent less hospital admissions 00:02:34.63\00:02:37.14 at least in the Internal Medicine ward. 00:02:37.15\00:02:39.15 So this is just kind of just like 00:02:39.16\00:02:40.52 everyday life things that they, 00:02:40.53\00:02:42.44 they could get a handle on. 00:02:42.45\00:02:43.42 That's right, you know of course 00:02:43.43\00:02:45.73 tobacco and alcohol are probably the big two. 00:02:45.74\00:02:49.21 But there are a lot of other addictions 00:02:49.22\00:02:51.31 out there as well that are more under 00:02:51.32\00:02:53.82 the table and people don't recognize the 00:02:53.83\00:02:56.65 severe consequences of 00:02:56.66\00:02:57.97 those addictions caused. 00:02:57.98\00:02:59.17 So what are some of those be, 00:02:59.18\00:03:00.81 we got alcohol, tobacco what are 00:03:00.82\00:03:01.83 some of the other addictions? 00:03:01.84\00:03:02.95 Well, sugar addiction. It's a big one. 00:03:02.96\00:03:05.52 There are many individuals that are 00:03:05.53\00:03:08.87 addicted to certain foods, 00:03:08.88\00:03:10.34 particularly the real high simple 00:03:10.35\00:03:13.24 carbohydrate foods, chocolate, 00:03:13.25\00:03:15.01 40 percent of females in United States 00:03:15.02\00:03:19.15 have an addictive relationship to chocolates. 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.47 Is that right? Yeah. 10 percent of males, 00:03:21.48\00:03:24.24 it still occurs in males as well. 00:03:24.25\00:03:25.99 Go ahead. No, so you've got chocolate, 00:03:26.00\00:03:30.46 you've got, what about caffeine? 00:03:30.47\00:03:31.91 Caffeine is another big one, 00:03:31.92\00:03:33.85 80 percent of Americans utilize caffeine regularly. 00:03:33.86\00:03:39.36 And that is an addictive drug, 00:03:39.37\00:03:41.93 it ends in INE and if you withdraw from it 00:03:41.94\00:03:44.64 you'll get, you'll feel like you're on chemotherapy 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.29 with the headaches and the zombie-like feeling. 00:03:47.30\00:03:49.36 And I remember doing that actually I, 00:03:49.37\00:03:51.35 I was working one summer night 00:03:51.36\00:03:52.98 began to partake of the soft drink that 00:03:52.99\00:03:55.00 I won't mention on air here but if I mention it, 00:03:55.01\00:03:58.09 everyone would probably know what 00:03:58.10\00:03:59.16 it was and, right, and then when I stopped 00:03:59.17\00:04:01.97 at the end of the summer I had these 00:04:01.98\00:04:04.07 terrible headaches for like five days and 00:04:04.08\00:04:06.24 I realized that was this what it was. Yeah. 00:04:06.25\00:04:08.39 I hope most people last about two or three 00:04:08.40\00:04:10.81 days but we've had people last 00:04:10.82\00:04:13.19 for as long as 14 days. 14 days, yeah. 00:04:13.20\00:04:16.27 Severe headaches from withdrawn. 00:04:16.28\00:04:17.66 So I suppose one of the challenges is 00:04:17.67\00:04:19.73 getting people to want to make a positive 00:04:19.74\00:04:23.55 health change and to understand 00:04:23.56\00:04:26.17 what a positive health change is? Yes exactly. 00:04:26.18\00:04:29.32 Many people of course don't know that 00:04:29.33\00:04:32.56 they're doing things that are harming 00:04:32.57\00:04:34.62 their body and of course that's the 00:04:34.63\00:04:36.58 first step, is to give them the knowledge 00:04:36.59\00:04:38.53 of what those habits are doing to their body. 00:04:38.54\00:04:41.01 No one will ever move along the stages 00:04:41.02\00:04:44.71 of change unless they're given good knowledge 00:04:44.72\00:04:48.05 that they're convinced as good knowledge, 00:04:48.06\00:04:50.54 and then they'll be able to make the changes 00:04:50.55\00:04:53.56 from there hopefully. And so how do you 00:04:53.57\00:04:55.76 go about that I mean many times I'll say to 00:04:55.77\00:04:57.50 people you really shouldn't do that, 00:04:57.51\00:04:58.48 they just go oh you got to die at something. 00:04:58.49\00:05:00.19 Well they're not willing to give it up and they 00:05:00.20\00:05:04.01 think that the life would not be enjoyable 00:05:04.02\00:05:06.74 without it. There's a lot of 00:05:06.75\00:05:08.35 people that are so hooked to their 00:05:08.36\00:05:11.63 addictions that they think that somehow 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.31 life will no longer have joy 00:05:14.32\00:05:16.20 if they give that addiction up. 00:05:16.21\00:05:17.83 They give up that Hoho, zinger or 00:05:17.84\00:05:20.69 that chocolate bar whatever it is. Right, 00:05:20.70\00:05:22.73 exactly. And of course they, 00:05:22.74\00:05:24.28 the testimonies are very clear from people 00:05:24.29\00:05:27.43 who have given those things up that 00:05:27.44\00:05:28.94 actually their joy and happiness is 00:05:28.95\00:05:30.77 enhanced and not detracted from. Okay, 00:05:30.78\00:05:34.55 so coming to the first step then is 00:05:34.56\00:05:37.06 having them see that they're doing something 00:05:37.07\00:05:39.64 negative and then probably the second step 00:05:39.65\00:05:41.60 is replacing it with something positive. Yes. 00:05:41.61\00:05:44.62 That's right actually we have a graphic that 00:05:44.63\00:05:46.52 kind of you know even infants when they're, 00:05:46.53\00:05:49.62 when they're changing. 00:05:49.63\00:05:51.07 Have this struggle to go through, 00:05:51.08\00:05:53.83 they have to learn what to do, 00:05:53.84\00:05:55.24 they have to get ready to do it 00:05:55.25\00:05:56.80 and then they have to do it. 00:05:56.81\00:05:58.33 And so those are the preparation phase 00:05:58.34\00:06:02.65 so to speak of making a lifestyle change. 00:06:02.66\00:06:06.08 Yeah I mean I have an infant right now, 00:06:06.09\00:06:08.35 I have an eight month old and I have a 00:06:08.36\00:06:09.47 2 year old. And you know 00:06:09.48\00:06:11.52 the eight month old is learning how to 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.46 do things, the 2 year old is getting ready to, 00:06:14.47\00:06:17.90 get away from diapers and we're all praying 00:06:17.91\00:06:20.42 for that once a day, and then wanting to it 00:06:20.43\00:06:23.74 and identifying it, same kind of thing 00:06:23.75\00:06:26.02 in any change. Yeah, exactly. 00:06:26.03\00:06:27.40 They're having to go through those same 00:06:27.41\00:06:29.25 changes but fortunately for them 00:06:29.26\00:06:31.78 sometimes it's actually easier because 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.40 of the own barriers we adults 00:06:34.41\00:06:36.08 put up in making changes ourselves. Okay, 00:06:36.09\00:06:40.37 so anything you want to say about those, 00:06:40.38\00:06:42.19 learning what to do, and those steps other 00:06:42.20\00:06:44.97 than just identifying, they're pretty basic. 00:06:44.98\00:06:46.55 Well often when we're dealing we change, 00:06:46.56\00:06:49.38 we're talking about addictions and they're 00:06:49.39\00:06:50.81 some common characteristics of 00:06:50.82\00:06:52.60 addictions that would be worth 00:06:52.61\00:06:54.45 mentioning at this point. 00:06:54.46\00:06:55.62 A lot of people wonder what you say 00:06:55.63\00:06:57.58 for instance chocolate addiction. 00:06:57.59\00:06:59.96 And the majority, 00:06:59.97\00:07:01.64 there's five common characteristics 00:07:01.65\00:07:03.72 of addictions and majority of these will 00:07:03.73\00:07:07.33 be present in most addictions. 00:07:07.34\00:07:09.22 First is an overwhelming compulsion 00:07:09.23\00:07:11.44 to continually use, okay. 00:07:11.45\00:07:13.27 Then there is a need for increased 00:07:13.28\00:07:15.45 amounts overtime. And then if the 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.77 individual stops it they'll actually begin 00:07:17.78\00:07:20.45 to suffer withdrawal symptoms. 00:07:20.46\00:07:21.97 Then if they stop it for even a long 00:07:21.98\00:07:25.04 period of time maybe several weeks 00:07:25.05\00:07:27.00 or months there's still a pretty high tendency 00:07:27.01\00:07:29.09 that they're gonna relapse back into it. 00:07:29.10\00:07:30.64 And there's also a detrimental effect 00:07:30.65\00:07:33.78 on the individual or a society. 00:07:33.79\00:07:36.02 There's something that's quite interesting 00:07:36.03\00:07:38.50 in regards to bad habits versus good habits. 00:07:38.51\00:07:43.16 Bad habits tend to have a very addictive nature, 00:07:43.17\00:07:50.19 element, an element to them. 00:07:50.20\00:07:51.26 Where good habits, actually you can 00:07:51.27\00:07:54.76 withdraw from good habits and 00:07:54.77\00:07:56.85 choose other good habits and it's not something 00:07:56.86\00:07:59.52 that produces a lot of blood, sweat and tears 00:07:59.53\00:08:01.73 in regards of the individual. 00:08:01.74\00:08:03.38 I'd like to use the example of mangoes for 00:08:03.39\00:08:07.00 instance, my wife is allergic to mangoes, 00:08:07.01\00:08:10.03 breaks out on her mouth and you know she likes 00:08:10.04\00:08:14.64 mangoes but once we figured out 00:08:14.65\00:08:17.24 what's happening and I told that she 00:08:17.25\00:08:19.64 shouldn't eat mangoes anymore, 00:08:19.65\00:08:20.92 she didn't say Neil, I don't know how 00:08:20.93\00:08:23.90 in the world I'm gonna enjoy life without them. 00:08:23.91\00:08:25.92 I mean, are you serious, 00:08:25.93\00:08:28.29 I'm gonna have to give up mangoes, 00:08:28.30\00:08:29.60 she didn't sweat, she didn't you know 00:08:29.61\00:08:32.88 argue with me vehemently that you 00:08:32.89\00:08:35.12 have to die of something. 00:08:35.13\00:08:36.29 She didn't hide mangoes in the, right, 00:08:36.30\00:08:39.79 around the house, exactly. 00:08:39.80\00:08:42.02 And of course the Lord's choices are that way. 00:08:42.03\00:08:44.33 One of God's principles is freedom of choice. 00:08:44.34\00:08:47.26 In fact He was so willing for freedom 00:08:47.27\00:08:50.42 of choice to be there that He was more 00:08:50.43\00:08:52.49 willing for sin to enter into the world 00:08:52.50\00:08:54.73 than for freedom to be done away with. 00:08:54.74\00:08:57.38 And so His choice is we have freedom in that, 00:08:57.39\00:09:01.48 we can choose, if you're addicted to broccoli 00:09:01.49\00:09:03.66 you might be disappointed that you 00:09:03.67\00:09:05.53 no longer can eat broccoli but 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.17 you'll be able to do that very well. 00:09:07.18\00:09:09.27 The devil's habits, there's a grip of vice 00:09:09.28\00:09:13.98 that's put around the individuals 00:09:13.99\00:09:16.35 they start utilizing that. 00:09:16.36\00:09:17.62 And so even if they want to have the 00:09:17.63\00:09:19.54 freedom to change afterwards and they know 00:09:19.55\00:09:22.01 that they should change, 00:09:22.02\00:09:23.20 the grip is so strong that it requires 00:09:23.21\00:09:26.45 some pretty tremendous resources 00:09:26.46\00:09:28.12 including spiritual resources for them 00:09:28.13\00:09:30.44 to ever be able to change. 00:09:30.45\00:09:31.72 So what would you say to the person 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.51 that comes to you and says, 00:09:34.52\00:09:35.88 well yeah man but these are plants God created 00:09:35.89\00:09:39.63 and I'm just smoking them, 00:09:39.64\00:09:40.82 so God created those, 00:09:40.83\00:09:42.38 you know I've had people telling me 00:09:42.39\00:09:43.80 that the substances that they're buying 00:09:43.81\00:09:45.92 of were created by God. Well. 00:09:45.93\00:09:48.56 Just because it's a plant, 00:09:48.57\00:09:50.24 it doesn't mean it's healthy. 00:09:50.25\00:09:51.60 I mean you know where does you know 00:09:51.61\00:09:54.94 heroin come from. You know there's 00:09:54.95\00:09:57.05 all sorts of drugs that are derived 00:09:57.06\00:09:59.05 from plant sources that are clearly 00:09:59.06\00:10:01.11 harmful to the brain, harmful to the body. 00:10:01.12\00:10:04.00 Tobacco is one of those as well, 00:10:04.01\00:10:06.02 marijuana is there and so I take issue 00:10:06.03\00:10:09.51 with the people that say well it's all 00:10:09.52\00:10:11.12 natural because there's clearly some things 00:10:11.13\00:10:15.11 that are natural that are quite harmful, 00:10:15.12\00:10:16.75 I mean yeah, snake venom is natural too, 00:10:16.76\00:10:18.92 but we wouldn't want to inject it into us. 00:10:18.93\00:10:21.25 Yes. Right. And I guess the first story 00:10:21.26\00:10:24.87 there in Genesis about the first drug pusher 00:10:24.88\00:10:27.28 if you will, he said hey, 00:10:27.29\00:10:28.47 you have some of this it will make you get high, 00:10:28.48\00:10:30.36 you will get higher than everybody else, 00:10:30.37\00:10:31.68 that's right, you'll have insight, 00:10:31.69\00:10:33.03 they will do this, yeah, 00:10:33.04\00:10:34.38 it was kind of a very addictive kind 00:10:34.39\00:10:36.25 of drug pusher kind of conversation. 00:10:36.26\00:10:37.91 It was. Yeah. It was going to make 00:10:37.92\00:10:41.18 her feel good. Right. 00:10:41.19\00:10:43.27 Put her into an enhanced fear and of course 00:10:43.28\00:10:46.38 there's a lot of people when they start 00:10:46.39\00:10:47.54 utilizing drugs that's why they utilize it, 00:10:47.55\00:10:49.52 they utilize it to get high at first. 00:10:49.53\00:10:52.12 But as the grip starts getting them 00:10:52.13\00:10:54.92 then they actually don't use it to get 00:10:54.93\00:10:57.97 high anymore, they use it to numb their pain. 00:10:57.98\00:11:00.12 Because in between times they have some 00:11:00.13\00:11:02.75 very low periods of no pleasure, 00:11:02.76\00:11:06.04 you know lower than what the 00:11:06.05\00:11:07.14 human being is supposed to be at 00:11:07.15\00:11:08.90 and so they try to get their pleasure 00:11:08.91\00:11:10.60 scale up to the "normal level" now. 00:11:10.61\00:11:13.01 They're having to utilize these drugs 00:11:13.02\00:11:15.29 just to numb their pain. 00:11:15.30\00:11:16.36 So identifying these addictive things 00:11:16.37\00:11:21.65 sometimes people just to come like for 00:11:21.66\00:11:23.59 instance you mentioned chocolate. 00:11:23.60\00:11:25.67 Are you saying that's like the devil's food? 00:11:25.68\00:11:30.36 Well there's some worse food that you could 00:11:30.37\00:11:33.48 actually eat believe it or not than chocolate, 00:11:33.49\00:11:36.77 but a chocolate is high in fat, 00:11:36.78\00:11:38.85 it's high in sugar, it adds to the waistline 00:11:38.86\00:11:42.68 and it also adds to some brain problems overtime. 00:11:42.69\00:11:49.96 A chocolate temporarily increases 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.63 serotonin levels; this is one of the 00:11:52.64\00:11:53.64 reasons why it somewhere addicted, 00:11:53.65\00:11:55.25 the dopamine levels also go up 00:11:55.26\00:11:56.76 because of chocolate. And so many 00:11:56.77\00:11:59.67 women call them comfort foods, 00:11:59.68\00:12:01.50 you know when I feel bad 00:12:01.51\00:12:02.53 I just need to have some chocolate and 00:12:02.54\00:12:04.95 then I feel better for a while. 00:12:04.96\00:12:06.16 But that only lasts a short term 00:12:06.17\00:12:08.28 and then their pleasure, 00:12:08.29\00:12:09.67 their dopamine levels go down 00:12:09.68\00:12:10.95 lower than what they're supposed 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.43 even during a period of fast. 00:12:12.44\00:12:14.25 And so they feel that need again. 00:12:14.26\00:12:16.33 So why do they go down? 00:12:16.34\00:12:18.06 Well it's really due to, you know, 00:12:18.07\00:12:22.03 any drug whether it's heroin, 00:12:22.04\00:12:26.45 whether it's cocaine, whether it's even 00:12:26.46\00:12:30.89 things that are not drugs, 00:12:30.90\00:12:32.04 pornography for instance is associated 00:12:32.05\00:12:35.12 with an elevation in dopamine levels 00:12:35.13\00:12:38.72 that is not based on something 00:12:38.73\00:12:40.48 that is long lasting. The long lasting way of 00:12:40.49\00:12:44.16 doing it is to eat a complex 00:12:44.17\00:12:46.67 carbohydrate diet, where you get 00:12:46.68\00:12:48.50 that nice steady state of dopamine levels, 00:12:48.51\00:12:51.19 it's not way up there off the scale, 00:12:51.20\00:12:53.73 above where human pleasure should 00:12:53.74\00:12:55.86 be like it is when these drugs 00:12:55.87\00:12:58.74 are utilized but it's up there at a nice level 00:12:58.75\00:13:00.87 where the individual can be a happy person 00:13:00.88\00:13:02.89 the entire day and not have these 00:13:02.90\00:13:05.37 periods of downtime. Okay. 00:13:05.38\00:13:08.42 So basically you've said tobacco, alcohol, 00:13:08.43\00:13:14.34 chocolate, some of these comfort foods, 00:13:14.35\00:13:17.45 will it be like simple carbohydrate foods 00:13:17.46\00:13:21.07 that make the sugars go up really high, 00:13:21.08\00:13:23.10 sugars all these other different things 00:13:23.11\00:13:25.33 are things we wanna avoid and those are 00:13:25.34\00:13:27.51 the things you are asking us to make 00:13:27.52\00:13:30.23 positive changes concerning. Right. 00:13:30.24\00:13:32.13 and there's other things that are not ingested 00:13:32.14\00:13:34.25 you know for instance gambling, 00:13:34.26\00:13:36.07 highly addictive. Gambling, pornography, 00:13:36.08\00:13:39.31 gambling, pornography, Internet, 00:13:39.32\00:13:41.32 there's Internet addictions. Welcome back. 00:15:10.72\00:15:16.07 We're talking with Dr. Neil Nedley 00:15:16.08\00:15:17.90 We're talking about making and 00:15:17.91\00:15:19.24 maintaining positive health choices. 00:15:19.25\00:15:21.69 We've talked about some things 00:15:21.70\00:15:22.83 that are very addictive, 00:15:22.84\00:15:24.10 we've talked about tobacco, 00:15:24.11\00:15:25.23 we've talked about alcohol, 00:15:25.24\00:15:26.29 we've talked about chocolate, 00:15:26.30\00:15:27.99 and we've talked about Internet, 00:15:28.00\00:15:30.79 we've talked about pornography, 00:15:30.80\00:15:32.39 we've talked about gambling. 00:15:32.40\00:15:33.49 Dr. Neil Nedley, are there other things 00:15:33.50\00:15:35.44 we should mention when we talk about 00:15:35.45\00:15:36.72 things that are addictive. 00:15:36.73\00:15:37.70 Very common addiction in the 00:15:37.71\00:15:39.78 United States is Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin. 00:15:39.79\00:15:43.98 These drugs that people utilize to make them 00:15:43.99\00:15:47.04 feel differently, again it's a false way 00:15:47.05\00:15:49.51 of altering the way they feel. 00:15:49.52\00:15:51.02 After they utilize them for more than 30 days, 00:15:51.03\00:15:54.03 they get a grip on them and they are 00:15:54.04\00:15:55.62 tough to get off it 00:15:55.63\00:15:56.60 And they're effecting their relationships, 00:15:56.61\00:15:59.05 they are effecting a lot of things 00:15:59.06\00:16:01.42 about them that they don't have a clue 00:16:01.43\00:16:02.75 that it's effecting them on, 00:16:02.76\00:16:04.13 until they go through the withdrawal process 00:16:04.14\00:16:06.47 and get off of them and then their 00:16:06.48\00:16:08.30 relationships dramatically improve 00:16:08.31\00:16:10.17 and all the enemies that they had 00:16:10.18\00:16:11.96 before are no longer there, extra, 00:16:11.97\00:16:14.65 and the common addiction in the US. 00:16:14.66\00:16:19.81 So in another words that the brain is 00:16:19.82\00:16:22.53 kind of organized around that substance 00:16:22.54\00:16:25.15 however you get it. That's right, 00:16:25.16\00:16:26.67 with those drugs it's increasing GABA 00:16:26.68\00:16:29.56 and so your body quits making it because it's 00:16:29.57\00:16:32.33 depending on the drugs and so when you 00:16:32.34\00:16:34.85 quite utilizing and the GABA goes down 00:16:34.86\00:16:36.84 to extremely low levels making you feel anxious 00:16:36.85\00:16:39.55 and almost wanting to crawl out of your skin, 00:16:39.56\00:16:41.66 you can even have a seizure with abrupt 00:16:41.67\00:16:43.80 withdrawal if you're on large doses of Xanax. 00:16:43.81\00:16:46.12 And so it needs to be done under doctor 00:16:46.13\00:16:48.94 supervision, but it's very important for 00:16:48.95\00:16:51.25 anyone listening out there that's on 00:16:51.26\00:16:53.46 these drugs I can tell you, 00:16:53.47\00:16:54.74 your life would be enhanced, 00:16:54.75\00:16:56.22 if you would see a good addictionologist 00:16:56.23\00:16:58.99 to help you get off of those drugs 00:16:59.00\00:17:00.99 and there is a good process on how 00:17:01.00\00:17:03.04 it can be done and virtually anyone can. 00:17:03.05\00:17:04.84 So how would they go about it, 00:17:04.85\00:17:06.59 what's the process? 00:17:06.60\00:17:07.57 Well the process on those drugs because 00:17:07.58\00:17:10.41 if you are on high doses you can end up 00:17:10.42\00:17:12.01 seizing as we wean them down slowly 00:17:12.02\00:17:14.25 over the course of three to five days, 00:17:14.26\00:17:16.63 they're decreasing the dose a little bit more 00:17:16.64\00:17:18.47 until they finally get to the place within 00:17:18.48\00:17:20.30 a month, where they're no longer taking that. 00:17:20.31\00:17:22.44 And it'll take another 30 days after that 00:17:22.45\00:17:24.65 for your brain to start producing GABA 00:17:24.66\00:17:26.58 like it's supposed to. So the individual 00:17:26.59\00:17:29.91 will have to be willing to put up with some 00:17:29.92\00:17:32.19 withdrawal for quite a period of time. 00:17:32.20\00:17:33.98 So it's best to be around people 00:17:33.99\00:17:35.94 that kind of understand what's 00:17:35.95\00:17:36.92 happening during that time. 00:17:36.93\00:17:37.93 Well I think it's good if you're on this 00:17:37.94\00:17:40.71 to let your family know what's happening 00:17:40.72\00:17:42.69 and they can support you in that. good. 00:17:42.70\00:17:46.22 So what do we do then we find ourselves 00:17:46.23\00:17:49.28 wanting to make these good choices, 00:17:49.29\00:17:51.37 we talked about what causes and addiction, 00:17:51.38\00:17:53.68 what do we do to make the changes 00:17:53.69\00:17:56.47 and then maintain them. 00:17:56.48\00:17:57.51 Well we have a graphic that shows something 00:17:57.52\00:18:00.14 that is surprising to a lot of people on these 00:18:00.15\00:18:02.82 addictions, whether it's a gambling or tobacco 00:18:02.83\00:18:07.37 or whatever. Many people say 00:18:07.38\00:18:09.56 well what if I just you know cut down 00:18:09.57\00:18:11.58 to using it just once a month. It's certainly an 00:18:11.59\00:18:14.43 improvement but the desire is 00:18:14.44\00:18:16.09 being kept alive. And actually may 00:18:16.10\00:18:19.54 even be increased during times and you are not 00:18:19.55\00:18:22.90 using it giving rise to feelings of a deep 00:18:22.91\00:18:25.29 distressing sense of deprivation. 00:18:25.30\00:18:27.39 And so if the addiction is permanently 00:18:27.40\00:18:30.42 abandoned and the thoughts directed toward 00:18:30.43\00:18:32.72 the joy of being free, 00:18:32.73\00:18:33.80 the addiction will soon not be missed. 00:18:33.81\00:18:36.34 And this is something that's important; 00:18:36.35\00:18:39.10 I've had people say well you know 00:18:39.11\00:18:40.70 I'm just a social smoker. 00:18:40.71\00:18:42.10 And they don't realize that they're setting 00:18:42.11\00:18:45.11 themselves up for quite a bit of distress 00:18:45.12\00:18:47.98 in between times. 00:18:47.99\00:18:49.07 So this pathway is maintained by that, 00:18:49.08\00:18:51.40 you know the addicted pathway is 00:18:51.41\00:18:53.89 maintained by that just one time a month. 00:18:53.90\00:18:56.20 That's right. And so the solution to 00:18:56.21\00:18:59.76 anything that's an inductive habit 00:18:59.77\00:19:01.24 is total abstinence for life. For life. 00:19:01.25\00:19:03.93 Shut the door completely. 00:19:03.94\00:19:05.18 That's right. Clean break. 00:19:05.19\00:19:07.32 And it sounds cruel to people that have 00:19:07.33\00:19:10.16 that addictive relationship there but 00:19:10.17\00:19:13.61 I can tell you it's not cruel, 00:19:13.62\00:19:15.07 it is the most sympathetic, 00:19:15.08\00:19:18.14 most compassionate way for that person 00:19:18.15\00:19:20.20 to be able to live a joyful life and once 00:19:20.21\00:19:24.53 they're over that addiction then their 00:19:24.54\00:19:27.12 thoughts are directed towards the joy 00:19:27.13\00:19:28.77 of being free and the addiction 00:19:28.78\00:19:30.86 won't be missed. Early on you've 00:19:30.87\00:19:32.96 said there's an addiction to sugar, 00:19:32.97\00:19:34.40 so they never have sugar their entire life. 00:19:34.41\00:19:36.10 Well for those that, 00:19:36.11\00:19:38.95 that have a heavy sugar addiction, 00:19:38.96\00:19:40.63 there maybe certain foods in it, 00:19:40.64\00:19:41.96 you'll still be able to eat fruit and things 00:19:41.97\00:19:43.44 like that, my father for instance 00:19:43.45\00:19:45.14 had a sugar addiction and he recognized it 00:19:45.15\00:19:49.04 when he was over 200 pounds and was 00:19:49.05\00:19:51.88 starting to suffer a lot of health problems 00:19:51.89\00:19:54.66 and he gave sugar up. 00:19:54.67\00:19:55.64 And it was a four month ordeal 00:19:55.65\00:19:57.89 before it no longer had an appeal to him. 00:19:57.90\00:20:01.33 But if he happened to eat a piece of pie 00:20:01.34\00:20:03.57 my mother would still bake him pies 00:20:03.58\00:20:06.49 but the pies had no sugar in it and 00:20:06.50\00:20:08.36 she baked us pies with sugar. 00:20:08.37\00:20:10.38 The pies happened to get switched, 00:20:10.39\00:20:11.89 he said it's a sickening sweet 00:20:11.90\00:20:13.35 that's not even enjoyable anymore. 00:20:13.36\00:20:15.23 Ice cream was sickening to him, 00:20:15.24\00:20:16.98 I mean now he enjoyed an apple 00:20:16.99\00:20:18.71 as much as he used to enjoying apple pie. 00:20:18.72\00:20:20.83 Because now he was enjoying the natural 00:20:20.84\00:20:23.56 sweetness and really getting a lot of 00:20:23.57\00:20:25.69 enjoyment out of that, 00:20:25.70\00:20:26.67 in fact my uncle used to come up from Texas 00:20:26.68\00:20:28.56 just to watch him eat, he thoroughly enjoyed 00:20:28.57\00:20:30.81 natural food without having to dump sugar on. 00:20:30.82\00:20:34.01 Well that was a powerful thing that 00:20:34.02\00:20:35.48 you saw people, that's right, 00:20:35.49\00:20:37.00 making and then maintaining 00:20:37.01\00:20:38.59 choices exactly. Well you have a 00:20:38.60\00:20:41.07 graphic that helps us understand more 00:20:41.08\00:20:45.24 about long term success. Yes. 00:20:45.25\00:20:47.93 This is a graphic that actually goes 00:20:47.94\00:20:52.80 through the four stages of change 00:20:52.81\00:20:54.49 but this graphic that's on the screen 00:20:54.50\00:20:55.85 we'll deal with it since it's up there. 00:20:55.86\00:20:57.67 This is, if you've been off in addiction 00:20:57.68\00:21:01.03 for a period of time and then you happen 00:21:01.04\00:21:03.62 to relapse back into it one time. 00:21:03.63\00:21:06.29 This is a quote from Ellen White, 00:21:06.30\00:21:08.50 it says "If you have made mistakes, 00:21:08.51\00:21:09.80 you certainly gain a victory 00:21:09.81\00:21:11.11 if you see these mistakes and 00:21:11.12\00:21:12.56 regard them as beacons of warning." 00:21:12.57\00:21:14.64 She goes on to say that, 00:21:14.65\00:21:18.65 "then you can turn defeat into victory, 00:21:18.66\00:21:22.06 disappointing the enemy and honoring 00:21:22.07\00:21:24.80 your Redeemer." So in another words 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.29 don't focus on making these oh I'm gonna fall 00:21:26.30\00:21:29.06 because if you learn from that fall 00:21:29.07\00:21:31.13 you're actually stronger. That's right, 00:21:31.14\00:21:32.56 a lot of people once they fall they thrown 00:21:32.57\00:21:34.19 their talent say I'm never gonna get 00:21:34.20\00:21:35.57 over this, this is just something that 00:21:35.58\00:21:37.43 I'm gonna have to put up with but 00:21:37.44\00:21:39.33 the good news is that they, if they stop and 00:21:39.34\00:21:43.81 analyze what went wrong during that fall. 00:21:43.82\00:21:46.58 It wasn't just one thing and usually it's about 00:21:46.59\00:21:49.12 two or three things, some barriers 00:21:49.13\00:21:50.71 were let down some other things 00:21:50.72\00:21:52.57 and if they set up those barriers 00:21:52.58\00:21:54.39 analyze it right about it, 00:21:54.40\00:21:56.09 they're actually going to be much less 00:21:56.10\00:21:57.76 likely to relapse again. And that's how 00:21:57.77\00:22:00.23 you can turn defeat in the victory, 00:22:00.24\00:22:02.63 meaning that the devil will be not happy 00:22:02.64\00:22:06.08 that he even tempted you to begin 00:22:06.09\00:22:08.65 with because you're that much stronger. 00:22:08.66\00:22:10.18 Okay so in other words like the person 00:22:10.19\00:22:12.06 that says, okay I just had one spoon of 00:22:12.07\00:22:14.64 that ice cream and I failed now, 00:22:14.65\00:22:17.61 so I'm gonna eat the whole gallon. 00:22:17.62\00:22:18.89 This is the, this was the kind of thing 00:22:18.90\00:22:22.14 that can help them say hey no, 00:22:22.15\00:22:23.21 you don't need to do that, that's right, 00:22:23.22\00:22:24.31 that's right, you just need to stop and analyze 00:22:24.32\00:22:26.48 what went wrong. Okay. So you have, 00:22:26.49\00:22:29.13 you have a series of phrases here 00:22:29.14\00:22:30.99 that can help us. 00:22:31.00\00:22:32.19 Yeah the four stages of change. Okay. 00:22:32.20\00:22:34.62 The four stages of change, 00:22:34.63\00:22:36.13 number one is consciously 00:22:36.14\00:22:38.11 incompetent. Okay. And that means, 00:22:38.12\00:22:41.73 I should say unconsciously 00:22:41.74\00:22:43.13 incompetent that means that the 00:22:43.14\00:22:44.40 person is ignorant, they don't know 00:22:44.41\00:22:46.36 that what they're doing is wrong 00:22:46.37\00:22:47.45 and it's harming them. 00:22:47.46\00:22:48.43 And so they seem to be happy 00:22:48.44\00:22:49.91 'cause ignorance is bliss for a while but 00:22:49.92\00:22:52.49 eventually it catches up with them and 00:22:52.50\00:22:53.94 they start having a marked decrease 00:22:53.95\00:22:56.34 in their quality of life due to their habit. 00:22:56.35\00:22:58.13 How they move to consciously incompetent 00:22:58.14\00:23:01.38 is by knowledge. 00:23:01.39\00:23:02.36 The Bible says my people are destroyed 00:23:02.37\00:23:04.86 for a lack of knowledge, 00:23:04.87\00:23:05.93 so it's a very important step, 00:23:05.94\00:23:07.51 good knowledge to move them 00:23:07.52\00:23:08.58 to stage two. 00:23:08.59\00:23:09.56 But they still haven't changed. 00:23:09.57\00:23:11.20 Once they institute the change 00:23:11.21\00:23:13.15 then they go to consciously competent. 00:23:13.16\00:23:15.13 And then once they stay in the 00:23:15.14\00:23:17.21 consciously competent phase, 00:23:17.22\00:23:18.55 for my father it was four months 00:23:18.56\00:23:20.26 with his sugar addiction then he became 00:23:20.27\00:23:22.72 unconsciously competent in other words 00:23:22.73\00:23:25.27 he had no desire for it anymore, 00:23:25.28\00:23:27.17 he was enjoying his new life much better 00:23:27.18\00:23:30.29 than he did his old life and it wasn't 00:23:30.30\00:23:33.40 something he had to try for anymore. 00:23:33.41\00:23:35.13 There wasn't any real effort involved in him. 00:23:35.14\00:23:37.87 So he's actually moved to the place where 00:23:37.88\00:23:39.70 it's just secondhand nature, just second 00:23:39.71\00:23:42.25 nature. When he goes there 00:23:42.26\00:23:43.44 he doesn't struggle with the menu 00:23:43.45\00:23:44.61 over oh this, first is that, right, exactly. 00:23:44.62\00:23:47.36 Anyhow he didn't use the artificial 00:23:47.37\00:23:49.12 sweeteners either, a lot of people never 00:23:49.13\00:23:50.79 get over their sugar addiction 00:23:50.80\00:23:52.31 because they're dumping the artificial 00:23:52.32\00:23:53.76 sweeteners in and of course that just 00:23:53.77\00:23:56.14 fosters their desire for the real thing. 00:23:56.15\00:23:58.17 So with him it did require some effort, 00:23:58.18\00:24:01.42 the consciously in fact you know caffeine 00:24:01.43\00:24:03.76 will be the same way when you 00:24:03.77\00:24:04.74 give up caffeine, when you get thirsty 00:24:04.75\00:24:06.43 you are gonna think of a caffeine drink 00:24:06.44\00:24:08.64 and you're gonna say no, not this, 00:24:08.65\00:24:11.07 drink water. And that process 00:24:11.08\00:24:13.29 of telling your mind no, 00:24:13.30\00:24:15.36 not this but water is gonna have 00:24:15.37\00:24:17.03 to be repeated for several weeks 00:24:17.04\00:24:19.17 until you get to stage four. 00:24:19.18\00:24:21.01 But a lot of people give up in stage three, 00:24:21.02\00:24:22.74 they think they're gonna have to go 00:24:22.75\00:24:23.72 through stage three their entire life, 00:24:23.73\00:24:25.24 and they won't. It's actually much better 00:24:25.25\00:24:28.73 I mean the. Or they think they're gonna 00:24:28.74\00:24:30.28 just being you know striving to enter 00:24:30.29\00:24:32.59 the straight gate, that's right. 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.36 And that striving doesn't last long time 00:24:34.37\00:24:38.88 necessarily, I mean some addictions 00:24:38.89\00:24:40.37 are powerful enough, they can last months. 00:24:40.38\00:24:42.16 But it gets easier as those weeks go by 00:24:42.17\00:24:46.07 and you know the Lord's choices that's 00:24:46.08\00:24:49.94 why the Bible says that thy right hand 00:24:49.95\00:24:51.95 there are pleasures forever more. 00:24:51.96\00:24:53.44 I mean this is a much more happy existence 00:24:53.45\00:24:56.39 to not have something that you know is harmful, 00:24:56.40\00:24:59.05 that you're continuing to do and 00:24:59.06\00:25:02.58 continuing to recognize that to no longer 00:25:02.59\00:25:05.37 having anything that you're habitually doing 00:25:05.38\00:25:08.73 that you know is harmful to you. 00:25:08.74\00:25:10.53 Well let's take an example, 00:25:10.54\00:25:11.56 let's take caffeine and let's goes through those 00:25:11.57\00:25:13.96 stages with that someone what would you do, 00:25:13.97\00:25:16.11 someone comes into your office and you 00:25:16.12\00:25:17.57 realize they're having palpitations, 00:25:17.58\00:25:19.50 they're having all these caffeine induced 00:25:19.51\00:25:21.81 arrhythmia's. Okay, first thing I would 00:25:21.82\00:25:24.06 give them is knowledge about the fact 00:25:24.07\00:25:26.36 that caffeine is doing this to them. 00:25:26.37\00:25:27.84 And tell them the best way is to get off 00:25:27.85\00:25:30.43 of caffeine and we would go through 00:25:30.44\00:25:33.67 the mental exercise that they need to do, 00:25:33.68\00:25:35.89 you know they need to quit buying it, 00:25:35.90\00:25:37.79 they need to have some water around instead, 00:25:37.80\00:25:41.12 water is the best beverage and so 00:25:41.13\00:25:43.44 when they first go to stage three 00:25:43.45\00:25:44.89 when they get thirsty they're gonna say 00:25:44.90\00:25:46.86 no not caffeine, water. 00:25:46.87\00:25:48.73 The next time they get thirsty 00:25:48.74\00:25:50.70 they're not gonna think of water, 00:25:50.71\00:25:51.87 they're gonna think of a caffeine beverage. 00:25:51.88\00:25:53.42 No not caffeine, water. And so this process 00:25:53.43\00:25:57.13 will need to be repeated a couple of 00:25:57.14\00:25:59.46 weeks maybe it doesn't take as long for 00:25:59.47\00:26:01.64 caffeine maybe a month and then pretty soon 00:26:01.65\00:26:03.96 when the individual gets thirsty the 00:26:03.97\00:26:05.60 caffeine drink is even on the mind, 00:26:05.61\00:26:07.12 now the neurons have changed so that 00:26:07.13\00:26:09.58 water is on the mind and the individual 00:26:09.59\00:26:11.57 just habitually goes for water and 00:26:11.58\00:26:13.80 has no desire for the caffeine anymore. 00:26:13.81\00:26:17.03 So back to the first stage again, 00:26:17.04\00:26:19.72 you brought, you brought the other sheet 00:26:19.73\00:26:21.08 or a pamphlet that you give them on caffeine 00:26:21.09\00:26:22.82 or do you just talk about it to them. 00:26:22.83\00:26:24.52 Well, we do have literature that we can 00:26:24.53\00:26:26.94 give them as well. Is this true, 00:26:26.95\00:26:28.40 a woman just asked us about caffeine, 00:26:28.41\00:26:30.02 is it true that when you actually drink 00:26:30.03\00:26:31.68 caffeine it's a diuretic, 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.51 can you lose more flu than you gain 00:26:33.52\00:26:34.94 drinking it? That's true, yeah; 00:26:34.95\00:26:36.00 it's not a good way to hydrate yourself. 00:26:36.01\00:26:37.76 So you don't really even get a benefit 00:26:37.77\00:26:39.46 when you're drinking a drink. 00:26:39.47\00:26:40.44 You're not getting a benefit. 00:26:40.45\00:26:42.03 Those of the kind of things you cover 00:26:42.04\00:26:43.48 with them? That's right yeah. 00:26:43.49\00:26:45.24 and so they see all that and then, 00:26:45.25\00:26:46.74 and you know studies show that if you're 00:26:46.75\00:26:48.06 under the influence of caffeine you're more 00:26:48.07\00:26:49.65 likely to gossip than when you are not 00:26:49.66\00:26:51.87 under the influence of caffeine. Okay. 00:26:51.88\00:26:54.06 That's when you stick to the strict definition 00:26:54.07\00:26:57.21 of gossip of sharing private information 00:26:57.22\00:26:59.20 with someone who is not part of the problem 00:26:59.21\00:27:00.91 or part of the solution to the problem. 00:27:00.92\00:27:02.28 Now these stages they seem very 00:27:02.29\00:27:06.19 logical but you know you're a Christian 00:27:06.20\00:27:08.23 clinician and physician, 00:27:08.24\00:27:09.50 how do you bring the spiritual element 00:27:09.51\00:27:11.74 in as we have this last minute here. 00:27:11.75\00:27:13.44 Well the spiritual element is involved 00:27:13.45\00:27:15.34 in all the stages. You know God is the 00:27:15.35\00:27:17.82 author of truth and so He is the source of 00:27:17.83\00:27:21.43 knowledge. Scientific studies are just 00:27:21.44\00:27:24.86 expressions of that knowledge and so 00:27:24.87\00:27:27.12 God helps to implant the truth 00:27:27.13\00:27:29.04 there for to move to stage two 00:27:29.05\00:27:30.99 and then no one will go to stage three 00:27:31.00\00:27:33.14 unless the spirit of God is working on 00:27:33.15\00:27:34.75 their heart, because these addictions 00:27:34.76\00:27:36.62 are so powerful human beings can't 00:27:36.63\00:27:38.68 neuronally do it themselves, 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.36 they have to be willing but then they 00:27:40.37\00:27:42.25 have to rely on God. We've been talking 00:27:42.26\00:27:46.20 with Dr. Neil Nedley and really the bottom line 00:27:46.21\00:27:48.59 is the power of the Gospel. 00:27:48.60\00:27:50.32 It's what we need to make and maintain 00:27:50.33\00:27:54.66 positive choices.
