The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.32 designed to promote good health and is not 00:00:03.33\00:00:05.58 intended to take the place of 00:00:05.59\00:00:06.84 personalized professional care. 00:00:06.85\00:00:08.64 The opinions and ideas expressed are 00:00:09.37\00:00:11.35 those of the speaker. Viewers are encouraged 00:00:11.36\00:00:13.81 to draw their own conclusions about 00:00:13.82\00:00:15.53 the information presented. 00:00:15.54\00:00:16.88 Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:50.52\00:00:51.87 I'm your host Don Mackintosh and today 00:00:51.88\00:00:53.89 we're gonna be talking about cancer. 00:00:53.90\00:00:55.47 Here to talk with us is Dr. Neil Nedley, he is 00:00:55.89\00:00:58.10 a specialist in Internal Medicine and he is 00:00:58.11\00:01:00.39 from Ardmore, Oklahoma. Welcome Dr. Nedley. 00:01:00.40\00:01:02.76 Thank you Don. Now you, you do internal 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.13 medicine, you do a lot of different things 00:01:05.14\00:01:07.36 under that rubric, one of the things is the 00:01:07.37\00:01:10.09 things like you're doing today education, 00:01:10.10\00:01:11.98 and we're talking about, today about 00:01:12.49\00:01:14.12 cancer and that kind of strikes fear in 00:01:14.13\00:01:16.09 people's hearts, should it? Absolutely, yeah 00:01:16.10\00:01:19.43 cancer is a deadly disease and it often 00:01:19.44\00:01:21.68 disfigures and really humiliates significantly 00:01:21.69\00:01:25.55 before that death occurs. And is it the leading 00:01:25.56\00:01:29.21 cause of death, where is it now? 00:01:29.22\00:01:30.60 Yeah, depending on how you look at, 00:01:30.92\00:01:32.89 it could be the leading cause of death. 00:01:32.90\00:01:34.58 Coronary artery disease used to be 00:01:35.38\00:01:36.66 considered the leading cause of death. 00:01:36.67\00:01:38.28 There are less cases of that then there use to 00:01:38.98\00:01:40.72 be, but there are more causes of cancer 00:01:40.73\00:01:42.66 and so in some estimations cancer 00:01:43.70\00:01:46.41 now is number one, over 550,000 deaths 00:01:46.42\00:01:49.21 per year in this country just due to cancer. 00:01:49.22\00:01:52.04 And there is, you know there's warning 00:01:52.64\00:01:53.85 sings like bleeding and unusual bladder 00:01:53.86\00:01:57.00 habits and all those different kind of things. 00:01:57.01\00:01:58.57 We talked about that in our previous 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.18 program, but I think you know as we just 00:02:00.92\00:02:02.75 began here, we're not gonna focus on that as 00:02:02.76\00:02:04.75 much, but we're gonna be talking 00:02:04.76\00:02:06.44 about the immune system on what we 00:02:06.45\00:02:08.50 have to defend against it in this program. 00:02:08.51\00:02:10.33 But lets just briefly mention that people 00:02:10.74\00:02:13.22 should be aware of the warning signs and 00:02:13.23\00:02:15.79 the screenings, what are some of those? 00:02:15.80\00:02:17.21 Well warning signs would be unusual 00:02:17.88\00:02:19.52 bleeding or discharge, change in bowel or bladder 00:02:19.53\00:02:21.74 habits, thickening of the breast, difficulty 00:02:21.75\00:02:25.60 in swallowing or indigestion, that's a 00:02:25.61\00:02:28.34 big warning sign actually because 00:02:28.35\00:02:30.24 reflect is so common and Esophageal 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.37 cancer is on the rise. Okay. Then as far as 00:02:32.38\00:02:35.44 screening colonoscopies? At age 50 stool slide 00:02:35.45\00:02:39.27 test, for microscopic blood at 40, 00:02:39.28\00:02:41.47 for women mammograms, Pap smears. 00:02:42.22\00:02:44.62 For men PSA test and then physical exams 00:02:45.45\00:02:48.94 where there is tension to the thyroid, 00:02:48.95\00:02:50.52 the lymph nodes, ovaries, testicles. 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.06 What about Thermograms? Thermograms, yes actually 00:02:53.72\00:02:58.02 the Thermograms can have less radiation to 00:02:58.03\00:03:01.44 them however there is new mammography 00:03:01.45\00:03:04.50 now that only has about 1/50th of the 00:03:04.51\00:03:08.65 radiation of previous mammograms, 00:03:08.66\00:03:11.10 and so if you get modern mammography really 00:03:11.64\00:03:16.57 there isn't a concern that there used to be. 00:03:16.58\00:03:18.28 We're gonna talk today about things 00:03:18.72\00:03:20.10 that people can do once they know the 00:03:20.11\00:03:21.47 warning signs, of course avoiding the 00:03:21.48\00:03:22.95 Carcinogens themselves like smoking and 00:03:22.96\00:03:25.21 alcohol and meats and all these different 00:03:25.85\00:03:29.00 things that we put into our systems. 00:03:29.01\00:03:30.76 Polluted areas, we talked about fish, 00:03:31.49\00:03:33.86 we talked about how they you know are 00:03:33.87\00:03:36.21 seen to be drawing all the pollutants in the 00:03:36.22\00:03:38.49 streams, but we wanna talk about 00:03:38.50\00:03:40.23 protective foods? Yes you know interestingly 00:03:40.24\00:03:44.94 no matter how much we try, we can't 00:03:44.95\00:03:48.22 completely avoid all Carcinogens and 00:03:48.23\00:03:50.29 that's why we really need to focus on the 00:03:50.30\00:03:52.23 immune system. And I recently saw a 00:03:52.24\00:03:55.59 cartoon of a horse lying in a hospital bed 00:03:55.60\00:03:58.53 and there was an IV going into the horse, 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.29 that said Chemotherapy and the caption said 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.82 all those years with the Marlboro man. 00:04:03.83\00:04:05.53 So yeah, in another words you, you can't 00:04:06.54\00:04:09.40 avoid everything. You got to be, there's 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.73 gonna be people in your environment that 00:04:11.74\00:04:13.83 or the situations that I'm not saying people 00:04:14.19\00:04:16.67 out there are cancer causing, but it's gonna 00:04:16.68\00:04:18.46 be situations that you need to be looking at 00:04:18.47\00:04:20.96 protective elements in foods. 00:04:21.24\00:04:22.52 Yes, absolutely and in another ways it's not 00:04:23.14\00:04:25.14 just foods, but one of the greatest protective 00:04:25.15\00:04:27.85 elements actually are the Carotenoids. 00:04:27.86\00:04:30.50 Carotenoids. Yeah Carotenoids are what 00:04:31.21\00:04:33.94 turns your tomatoes red or strawberries 00:04:33.95\00:04:37.12 red, actually there are orange Carotenoids as 00:04:37.13\00:04:39.57 well, and the Carotenoids also in 00:04:39.58\00:04:43.24 green vegetables. And Carotenoids actually 00:04:43.25\00:04:46.65 decrease the tissue line in cancers, 00:04:46.66\00:04:49.33 so cancer of the lung being a tissue lying of 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.51 the bronchial tubes is decreased. 00:04:52.52\00:04:54.16 Cancer of the mouth and oral cavity is decreased. 00:04:54.96\00:04:58.59 And there is evidence showing cancer of the 00:04:59.03\00:05:00.74 breast or any other lining tissue cancer. 00:05:00.75\00:05:03.88 The cancer of Endothelium or the 00:05:03.89\00:05:07.78 Epithelial layers. So that's that outer layer 00:05:07.79\00:05:11.75 like if you're looking in there is just that 00:05:11.76\00:05:13.64 layer right here. That's right. 00:05:13.65\00:05:14.97 And all these are protecting that. 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.15 That's right, the Carotenoids protect 00:05:17.50\00:05:19.82 from developing cancer. And that's only a one 00:05:21.04\00:05:23.18 cell layer isn't it? That's right, often it's 00:05:23.19\00:05:25.42 just a one cell layer. Correct. Okay. 00:05:25.43\00:05:27.92 So, we have a graphic actually describing 00:05:28.17\00:05:31.19 the foods that are high in Carotenoids and 00:05:31.20\00:05:34.40 you can see mixed vegetables, pretty 00:05:34.41\00:05:36.36 good source, that's 78 percent of the RDA or 00:05:36.37\00:05:40.95 they recommend daily amounts for Beta Carotene. 00:05:40.96\00:05:43.38 Getting above a 100 is even better. 00:05:44.16\00:05:45.71 Cantaloupe just the half of a Cantaloupe 00:05:45.72\00:05:47.87 86 percent. Sweet red bell pepper if you eat 00:05:47.88\00:05:51.64 a whole one of those, a 135 percent of the 00:05:51.65\00:05:54.86 RDA of Beta Carotene. Sweet potato, again 00:05:54.87\00:05:58.51 being that orange color loaded with 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.53 Beta Carotene 249 percent for a medium 00:06:00.54\00:06:05.18 baked sweet potato. Cooked pumpkins 00:06:06.11\00:06:08.66 271 percent, raw carrots a cup 309 00:06:09.26\00:06:13.06 percent, but notice the cooked carrots have 00:06:13.07\00:06:14.69 even more, the cooking of the carrots 00:06:14.70\00:06:16.62 actually breaks down some of the fibers 00:06:16.63\00:06:18.46 membranes and allows more Beta 00:06:18.47\00:06:20.02 Carotene into the system and then the 00:06:20.03\00:06:22.37 highest source are orange yams, peeled 00:06:22.38\00:06:24.42 after baking one cup 436 percent. 00:06:24.43\00:06:27.42 And this is gonna, if you eat those that's 00:06:28.53\00:06:30.09 gonna be protecting that layer. 00:06:30.10\00:06:32.04 Exactly, wow, yeah. And many cancers 00:06:32.25\00:06:35.53 form in the Epithelium. Great, any other 00:06:35.54\00:06:39.48 protective food we should know about? 00:06:39.49\00:06:41.33 Vitamin C foods, Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant. 00:06:42.19\00:06:45.06 Okay. Antioxidants will protect against 00:06:45.30\00:06:48.28 the number of cancers actually Vitamin C 00:06:48.29\00:06:51.37 not only can protect you from cancer, 00:06:51.38\00:06:53.82 but also your offspring if you're a male. 00:06:54.92\00:06:57.30 A study show that males who are not 00:06:57.84\00:07:00.75 getting 250 milligram of vitamin C per day 00:07:00.76\00:07:03.48 their sperm can be genetically damaged, 00:07:04.44\00:07:06.55 even though they don't have bad gene 00:07:06.56\00:07:08.07 themselves, their sperm can be 00:07:08.08\00:07:10.34 genetically damage and that damaged 00:07:10.35\00:07:12.66 sperm can increase the risk of cancer of 00:07:12.67\00:07:14.85 the kidney, and cancer of the nervous system 00:07:14.86\00:07:17.38 and even lymphoma in their children. 00:07:18.24\00:07:20.94 And many people don't realize that 00:07:22.00\00:07:23.96 cancer is the second leading cause of death 00:07:25.21\00:07:27.27 in children, and many of those cancers are 00:07:27.28\00:07:30.46 not from the children's lifestyle 00:07:30.47\00:07:31.99 habits, but the lifestyle habits of the parents. 00:07:32.00\00:07:34.99 So what we realty need to get the 00:07:35.55\00:07:36.97 message out, any man who is reproductive 00:07:36.98\00:07:40.15 and wanting to have children 00:07:40.16\00:07:41.53 needs to get enough Vitamin C. 00:07:41.54\00:07:43.64 Well the Pastor did a lot of pre-marital 00:07:43.65\00:07:45.20 counseling maybe I should give them Vitamin C. 00:07:45.21\00:07:47.34 There you go. Alright, so foods that are high 00:07:47.35\00:07:51.48 in Vitamin C then. We have a graphic on 00:07:51.49\00:07:53.27 that is well. Okay. And the foods that are 00:07:53.28\00:07:55.93 high in Vitamin C are listed on the screen, 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.99 Broccoli, with Vitamin C you wanna 00:08:00.00\00:08:02.79 have it raw, cooking is gonna destroy 00:08:02.80\00:08:04.54 about half the Vitamin C, so you can 00:08:04.55\00:08:06.16 see Broccoli raw is gonna have more, 00:08:06.17\00:08:08.32 an half cup 41 milligrams. Sweet green bell 00:08:08.33\00:08:11.26 pepper 66 milligrams, just one orange will 00:08:11.27\00:08:15.27 have 70 milligrams of Vitamin C, but many 00:08:15.28\00:08:17.65 people are unaware that small kiwi has 00:08:17.66\00:08:19.91 even more, 75 milligrams of Vitamin 00:08:19.92\00:08:22.88 C and the strawberries are loaded, one cup 00:08:22.89\00:08:25.50 82 milligrams of Vitamin C. Grapefruit higher yet 00:08:25.51\00:08:29.55 94 milligrams. Brussels sprouts are 00:08:29.56\00:08:32.34 loaded, they are so loaded that even if 00:08:32.35\00:08:34.08 they're boiled, one cup is gonna have 98 00:08:34.09\00:08:36.63 milligrams. That's a hard sell for me. 00:08:36.64\00:08:37.97 Orange juice fresh one cup 124 00:08:37.98\00:08:41.75 milligrams and sweet red bell pepper one 00:08:41.76\00:08:44.92 medium 141 milligrams. A lot of people don't 00:08:44.93\00:08:47.69 realize red bell pepper is not only high in 00:08:47.70\00:08:49.60 Beta Carotene, but very high in Vitamin C. 00:08:49.61\00:08:51.99 Now regards to orange juice, what 00:08:53.09\00:08:54.85 type of orange juice you think would have 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.31 more Vitamin C in it. The orange juice 00:08:56.32\00:08:58.30 that's ready to serve, that you buy off the 00:08:58.31\00:09:00.68 shelf or the orange juice that comes from 00:09:00.69\00:09:03.95 the orange concentrate? Boy, I would say 00:09:03.96\00:09:07.37 probably off the shelf because they added to it. 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.56 Well, false, off the shelf if it stays there 00:09:10.49\00:09:14.03 for a while, yeah, just keeping it on the shelf 00:09:14.04\00:09:17.08 is going to deactivate the Vitamin C. 00:09:17.09\00:09:19.21 I knew that, but I was just saying 00:09:19.36\00:09:20.39 you're trying to trick me. And so if you are 00:09:20.40\00:09:22.29 there you know if it's been there a week or 00:09:22.30\00:09:24.26 two you're gonna have a lot less 00:09:24.27\00:09:25.75 Vitamin C, so the orange concentrate 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.62 would be able to preserve that or if you 00:09:27.63\00:09:29.81 freshly squeeze that orange juice would 00:09:30.36\00:09:33.08 even be better than the orange concentrate. 00:09:33.09\00:09:34.75 Boy, a kiwi and some orange juice. 00:09:35.22\00:09:37.06 But, I wanna tell you I'm gonna avoid the 00:09:38.42\00:09:39.52 Brussels sprouts myself, but the other 00:09:39.53\00:09:41.18 stuff there I just love it all. 00:09:41.19\00:09:42.40 Yeah, well you can avoid several of those 00:09:42.55\00:09:44.24 foods and still get your 250 milligrams a day. 00:09:44.25\00:09:46.51 Okay, any other vitamins we need that 00:09:46.70\00:09:49.23 are protective especially with cancer? 00:09:49.24\00:09:51.36 Vitamin E is very important in protecting cancer. 00:09:52.17\00:09:55.10 Vitamin E is actually a more potent 00:09:55.11\00:09:57.36 antioxidant than even Vitamin C. 00:09:57.37\00:09:59.46 And Vitamin E in foods has been shown 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.95 to reduce prostate cancer and also 00:10:01.96\00:10:04.62 actually skin cancer. One interesting study 00:10:04.63\00:10:08.74 in rabbits, a hairless strain of rabbits where 00:10:08.94\00:10:12.12 ultra light was shown down on them, 00:10:12.13\00:10:13.84 so much so that 24 percent of them got 00:10:13.85\00:10:15.98 skin cancer within a few weeks. 00:10:15.99\00:10:17.61 If the rabbits were fed extra Vitamin C and E 00:10:19.08\00:10:21.97 none of them got skin cancers, so C seems 00:10:22.76\00:10:25.05 to work with E in helping to prevent 00:10:25.06\00:10:27.82 skin cancer. And we have a graphic on the 00:10:27.83\00:10:30.32 foods that are high in Vitamin E. 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.89 Kind of feel sorry for those hairless rabbits 00:10:32.12\00:10:34.40 and rats or whatever there, 00:10:34.41\00:10:35.38 but let's look at our list. 00:10:35.39\00:10:36.36 Alright, yeah I do too with those, 00:10:36.37\00:10:38.56 that was the study. Soybean oil, one 00:10:38.57\00:10:41.54 tablespoon 23 percent of the RDA of 00:10:41.55\00:10:44.63 Vitamin E for one day, just ten almonds 00:10:44.64\00:10:47.68 would have 27 %, love almonds. 00:10:47.69\00:10:49.72 Almonds are perfect for Vitamin E. 00:10:49.73\00:10:51.08 Canola oil, one tablespoon 30 percent 00:10:51.83\00:10:55.89 of the RDA. Almond butter of course it's 00:10:55.90\00:10:58.25 concentrated then that would a good source, 00:10:58.26\00:11:00.27 sunflower seeds are an excellent source, 00:11:00.89\00:11:02.86 just one tablespoon 42 percent of the intake 00:11:02.87\00:11:07.10 of Vitamin E. Good news for a Kansan 00:11:07.11\00:11:08.33 like me. Yeah, absolutely. And then 00:11:08.34\00:11:11.02 there are other foods that are higher yet, 00:11:11.03\00:11:12.50 the sunflower oil of course being more 00:11:12.51\00:11:14.38 concentrated and wheat germ oil an 00:11:14.39\00:11:17.53 excellent source and that really 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.43 underscores the need to eat the whole wheat bread. 00:11:20.44\00:11:23.42 If you're eating the white bread you're not 00:11:23.43\00:11:24.69 getting the Vitamin E. So it sounds like it 00:11:24.70\00:11:27.06 from the list that the concentration is in the 00:11:27.07\00:11:29.96 oil of those foods. That's true, Vitamin E 00:11:29.97\00:11:32.57 is a fat soluble vitamin and so tends 00:11:32.58\00:11:35.52 to come with the fat of plants. 00:11:35.53\00:11:37.85 You're really not gonna get it in the fat 00:11:38.44\00:11:40.34 of the animals or say near that, unless they 00:11:40.35\00:11:43.34 have eating a lot of plants. 00:11:43.35\00:11:44.35 Well even then not near as high as getting 00:11:44.95\00:11:47.14 it directly from the plants. Sure, 00:11:47.15\00:11:48.47 and I was talking to a man that you know 00:11:49.23\00:11:50.83 works for a huge manufacturing plant 00:11:50.84\00:11:53.42 in the Mid West that makes soybean oil 00:11:53.43\00:11:55.98 and he was telling me that, that a soybean or 00:11:55.99\00:11:58.88 excuse me sunflower seed, yeah, sunflower 00:11:58.89\00:12:01.60 oil and all that stuff, high concentration in 00:12:02.25\00:12:04.83 those, in those seeds, yeah, you can see that 00:12:04.84\00:12:08.11 there as well. Vitamin E is very important 00:12:08.12\00:12:11.12 there, and by the way don't be afraid of the 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.42 food-grade canola. There's a lot of people 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.18 out there saying canola is the cause of 00:12:16.19\00:12:17.77 mad cow disease and it's really tractor oil 00:12:17.78\00:12:19.98 and that type of thing. There is a type of 00:12:19.99\00:12:22.47 rapeseed oil that is used for tractors and 00:12:22.48\00:12:24.66 it's now food-grade, but they've gotten that 00:12:24.67\00:12:26.78 confused and they think that's what 00:12:26.79\00:12:28.29 people are eating off the shelf and that's not 00:12:28.30\00:12:31.16 true, canola has been shown to be a healthy oil. 00:12:31.17\00:12:32.97 So really the food, this produce department in 00:12:33.11\00:12:36.09 the supermarket is like a friend of mine 00:12:36.10\00:12:38.90 says the department of defense. 00:12:38.91\00:12:40.99 Absolutely. If you wanna go there and 00:12:41.38\00:12:43.96 get tooled up. Yeah. We wanna talk about 00:12:43.97\00:12:45.69 antioxidants and all these different things 00:12:45.70\00:12:47.69 when we comeback and look more fully at 00:12:47.70\00:12:49.91 that, but looking at the warning signs, 00:12:49.92\00:12:52.82 avoiding the Carcinogenic foods, 00:12:52.83\00:12:54.64 having your screening as well, but then 00:12:55.33\00:12:57.07 going and enhancing the immune system 00:12:57.59\00:12:59.80 with these protective foods that's the message. 00:13:00.35\00:13:01.32 That's the message, and of course there's 00:13:02.36\00:13:03.80 other some protective foods as well. 00:13:03.81\00:13:05.56 Selenium foods actually are protective too. 00:13:05.57\00:13:08.34 We're talking with Dr. Neil Nedley, we're 00:13:08.91\00:13:10.30 talking about how to protect yourself 00:13:10.31\00:13:12.52 against cancer. That's good news that God 00:13:13.15\00:13:15.53 has provided fruits and vegetables and 00:13:15.54\00:13:18.11 nuts as well that can be protective. 00:13:18.12\00:13:20.09 When we comeback we're gonna look at 00:13:20.10\00:13:21.18 the antioxidants, join us when we comeback. 00:13:21.19\00:13:24.06 Are you confused about the endless 00:13:26.82\00:13:28.85 stream of new and often contradictory 00:13:28.86\00:13:30.98 health information with companies 00:13:30.99\00:13:33.36 trying to sell new drugs and special 00:13:33.37\00:13:35.29 interest groups paying for studies 00:13:35.30\00:13:36.94 that spin the fact, where can you find a 00:13:36.95\00:13:39.39 common sense approach to health. 00:13:39.40\00:13:41.09 One way is to ask for your free copy of 00:13:41.56\00:13:43.66 Dr. Arnott's 24 realistic ways to 00:13:43.67\00:13:46.27 improve your health. Just log on to 00:14:15.32\00:14:17.35 3abn.org and click on free offers or call 00:14:17.36\00:14:20.60 us during regular business hours, 00:14:20.61\00:14:22.38 you'll be glad you did. 00:14:22.60\00:14:23.83 Welcome back we're talking with Dr. Nedley 00:14:26.30\00:14:28.04 about cancer. The bad news is a lot of people 00:14:28.05\00:14:31.16 are getting cancer, but the good news is there 00:14:31.17\00:14:32.70 are things you can do to protect yourself 00:14:32.71\00:14:34.54 against it. Thanks so much for being with us. 00:14:34.55\00:14:37.02 Thank you Don, it's great to be here. 00:14:37.35\00:14:38.66 In our first half we're talking about 00:14:38.67\00:14:40.10 protective foods, we're talking about 00:14:40.11\00:14:41.44 vitamin C, we said we should probably had 00:14:41.45\00:14:43.90 mentioned that in marriage counseling, 00:14:43.91\00:14:45.38 because the male can protect his offspring 00:14:45.39\00:14:49.78 from cancer fascinating and then also the 00:14:49.79\00:14:52.62 Vitamin E largely in the plant oils and 00:14:52.63\00:14:55.61 that's protective as well. You also mentioned 00:14:55.62\00:14:57.52 the Selenium. What's Selenium? 00:14:57.53\00:14:59.10 Selenium is a trace mineral and it's in the 00:14:59.59\00:15:02.55 soil and it's found primarily in wheat 00:15:02.56\00:15:06.03 products and seeds. Particularly the wheat 00:15:06.04\00:15:09.08 grown in the Dakotas is loaded with 00:15:09.09\00:15:11.25 Selenium and that prevents colon cancer. 00:15:11.26\00:15:14.00 So, we wanna talk now about so called 00:15:14.65\00:15:17.16 antioxidants is that like something like 00:15:17.17\00:15:19.96 that's against oxygen. Are you against 00:15:19.97\00:15:22.32 oxygen Dr. Nedley? Well no, oxygen is a 00:15:22.33\00:15:25.34 very good thing. But to get your tissues 00:15:25.35\00:15:28.13 oxidized is not a good thing. Alright, so tell 00:15:28.14\00:15:30.94 me, what's that mean. You're a biochemist 00:15:30.95\00:15:32.66 major? Yeah O2 is great but O3 is not 00:15:32.67\00:15:37.13 great when you bring it in. O3 is ozone 00:15:37.14\00:15:40.54 and ozone if you put it into the system that 00:15:41.81\00:15:45.45 free oxygen off of the O2 is like a free 00:15:45.46\00:15:49.34 radical and so it bounce around and 00:15:49.35\00:15:53.01 bang up things, and actually get into genes 00:15:53.02\00:15:56.48 and help change the genes. 00:15:56.49\00:15:57.82 So, so the antioxidants are 00:15:58.26\00:16:01.14 protecting against O3? Exactly, and other 00:16:01.15\00:16:04.35 types of substances that can actually 00:16:04.36\00:16:07.56 oxidize the tissues or cause cancer. 00:16:07.57\00:16:09.90 So let's go back to the department of defense, 00:16:10.09\00:16:12.05 we're in the food section, right, and 00:16:12.06\00:16:13.89 we're gonna look at antioxidants, 00:16:13.90\00:16:15.34 you're gonna help us to that? 00:16:15.35\00:16:16.36 Yes, interestingly a cup of kale has 50 00:16:16.96\00:16:22.25 milligrams of Vitamin C, wow, and 13 units 00:16:22.79\00:16:26.25 of vitamin E. But if you take a look at the 00:16:26.26\00:16:29.56 antioxidant potential of a cup of kale, 00:16:29.57\00:16:33.02 it's actually equal to 800 units of vitamin E 00:16:33.79\00:16:38.70 and 1100 milligrams of vitamin C. 00:16:38.71\00:16:41.74 So in another words the whole plant 00:16:42.76\00:16:45.04 actually super seeds by far the sum of its 00:16:45.64\00:16:49.28 component parts as far as the antioxidant potential. 00:16:49.29\00:16:52.48 And that's why it's much better than you 00:16:53.12\00:16:55.52 know then giving them Vitamin C at 00:16:55.53\00:16:57.80 marriage counseling a bottle of Vitamin C 00:16:57.81\00:17:00.20 would be giving them a whole cup there of kale. 00:17:00.89\00:17:04.93 You know I think maybe that something we're gonna do. 00:17:05.80\00:17:08.08 Well the University of California at Berkeley 00:17:10.64\00:17:12.54 went the next step and actually took a look at 00:17:12.55\00:17:15.86 the top ten antioxidant fruits. 00:17:15.87\00:17:19.02 Okay, let's look at those. And we have them up 00:17:19.03\00:17:22.12 on the screen as a graphic, but number 00:17:22.13\00:17:25.24 one I usually like to start number ten, 00:17:25.25\00:17:27.86 go the other way around, but number 00:17:27.87\00:17:29.67 one is strawberry, oh that's good news for me. 00:17:29.68\00:17:31.89 Strawberry very important antioxidant fruit. 00:17:31.90\00:17:34.79 Plum, a lot of people don't think of, 00:17:34.80\00:17:36.77 you know they think of plums being rather 00:17:36.90\00:17:38.71 humble fruit, but they're actually very 00:17:38.72\00:17:41.44 important antioxidant. Orange is number 00:17:41.45\00:17:43.68 three, red grapes will all there bio-flavor 00:17:43.69\00:17:45.95 and it's number four. Kiwi number five, 00:17:45.96\00:17:47.97 grapefruit six, white grapes not quite as 00:17:47.98\00:17:50.40 good as red grapes, but still very good. 00:17:50.41\00:17:52.20 Banana is number 8, apples following line 00:17:52.81\00:17:56.03 there at number nine and they rated tomato 00:17:56.04\00:17:58.64 as a fruit and that is number ten. Wow. 00:17:58.65\00:18:02.25 Tomato has been shown particularly to 00:18:02.26\00:18:04.17 help prevent prostate cancer. 00:18:04.18\00:18:05.59 So this because of I guess the 00:18:06.52\00:18:08.71 red pigment or something in it? 00:18:08.72\00:18:10.05 Yeah the red pigment in tomatoes lycopene, 00:18:10.69\00:18:12.84 those with the highest levels of lycopene in 00:18:13.25\00:18:15.18 their blood stream from fruits and 00:18:15.19\00:18:16.60 vegetables have the lowest rates of 00:18:16.61\00:18:18.22 Pancreatic cancer in the world and also 00:18:18.23\00:18:20.63 lower rates of prostate cancer and other cancers. 00:18:20.64\00:18:22.59 So strawberry, all these things are kind 00:18:23.07\00:18:25.21 of red there is white too, but these are the 00:18:25.22\00:18:28.83 Antioxidants. So take this list with you 00:18:29.11\00:18:31.08 when you go to the store the next time if 00:18:31.09\00:18:32.42 you wanna be protected. Absolutely. But the 00:18:32.43\00:18:34.17 big message is kale right? Well kale is a vegetable 00:18:34.18\00:18:38.03 and so they went and ranked the vegetables 00:18:38.04\00:18:40.18 as well, and I should mentions they did not 00:18:40.19\00:18:42.21 rank the legumes and if they had done that 00:18:42.22\00:18:46.19 some of the legumes may have come out 00:18:46.20\00:18:47.78 even on top of some of the vegetables, 00:18:47.93\00:18:49.91 because beans we know are loaded with 00:18:49.92\00:18:52.24 a number of different antioxidants you 00:18:52.25\00:18:54.52 know chemicals in them. They are made in the 00:18:55.50\00:18:58.17 formation of the legume. But let's take a look at 00:18:58.18\00:19:01.44 the graphic on the top ten antioxidant vegetables. 00:19:01.45\00:19:04.44 Okay. Number one garlic, garlic. 00:19:04.45\00:19:09.08 Very potent antioxidant vegetable, 00:19:09.50\00:19:11.23 actually it has some antibacterial, 00:19:11.24\00:19:12.98 antiviral property, has been shown to also 00:19:12.99\00:19:15.48 help prevent heart disease as well as cancer. 00:19:15.49\00:19:17.62 Kale comes in as number two and I'm 00:19:17.92\00:19:20.60 happy about that, kale is actually my favorite 00:19:20.61\00:19:22.45 green at least the way Erica makes it at home. 00:19:22.46\00:19:24.95 Spinach, it is good advice to follow your 00:19:24.96\00:19:29.06 grandma when she said to eat your spinach. 00:19:29.07\00:19:31.26 Number four Brussels sprouts, number five 00:19:31.80\00:19:33.89 Alfalfa sprouts, number six is 00:19:33.90\00:19:36.26 Broccoli, seven beets, eight red bell pepper, 00:19:36.27\00:19:40.39 we've been talking about that as far as its 00:19:40.40\00:19:42.09 vitamin E and C potential. Nine is onion and ten corn. 00:19:42.10\00:19:46.56 Corn, not corn chips, not corn chips, but the 00:19:46.81\00:19:50.21 whole corn. So these foods are back to kale 00:19:50.22\00:19:53.88 and all those others, they're just excellent. 00:19:53.89\00:19:55.95 Yeah, yeah and they are excellent and 00:19:56.49\00:19:59.72 that's why the American Cancer 00:19:59.73\00:20:00.91 Society continues to recommend to people 00:20:00.92\00:20:03.06 to eat their fruits and vegetables. 00:20:03.86\00:20:05.64 Now when you were telling that some of 00:20:05.65\00:20:07.04 these are just higher in the substances then 00:20:07.05\00:20:10.75 medications or other things you can get, 00:20:10.76\00:20:12.69 why aren't that, these not just being touted 00:20:13.12\00:20:15.68 even more and more like when you go to 00:20:15.69\00:20:17.33 your physician, here's a bowl of strawberries 00:20:17.34\00:20:19.46 and gives them to you, why not? 00:20:19.47\00:20:21.07 It should, really should be, it should 00:20:21.53\00:20:23.31 be part of health education to inform 00:20:23.32\00:20:25.93 people that the produce section can 00:20:25.94\00:20:28.19 prevent them from actually suffering a 00:20:28.20\00:20:30.46 horrible death, I mean cancer is a horrible death. 00:20:30.47\00:20:32.82 It's often and very painful, and these 00:20:32.83\00:20:35.38 fruits and vegetables and study after study 00:20:35.39\00:20:37.91 have been shown to prevent it. 00:20:37.92\00:20:39.25 You were telling me that there was some 00:20:39.62\00:20:40.89 research being done on tumeric, but it was 00:20:40.90\00:20:43.25 not funded, but you know these agencies 00:20:43.26\00:20:46.65 that usually fund things for health. 00:20:46.66\00:20:48.43 Was funded by I think the department of 00:20:48.44\00:20:51.03 defense or something. Right. But the studies 00:20:51.04\00:20:54.58 on these foods, there's not a lot of study, 00:20:54.59\00:20:56.47 because you can't really what, market it? 00:20:57.19\00:21:00.60 Well, what I was describing to you was 00:21:00.93\00:21:03.62 not just the cancer prevention studies. 00:21:03.63\00:21:05.81 The cancer prevention studies are done 00:21:05.82\00:21:07.48 through epidemiology, so the study of disease 00:21:07.49\00:21:10.20 groups and then the study of what they ate 00:21:10.21\00:21:12.37 or what lifestyle habits they had. 00:21:12.82\00:21:14.94 Where we can't get the funding is 00:21:15.38\00:21:18.25 in the treatment. I see. And so if we're using 00:21:18.26\00:21:20.91 plant foods to treat cancer, there is no 00:21:20.92\00:21:23.93 pharmaceutical company who is going to invest 00:21:23.94\00:21:26.17 in that, because you can't pattern a plant. 00:21:26.18\00:21:28.65 You know no one can plant a strawberry and 00:21:28.66\00:21:30.50 says it belongs to Pfizer. You can't pattern 00:21:30.51\00:21:33.87 turmeric, because it's a natural product. 00:21:33.88\00:21:36.12 I see. And so what Dr. Aggarwal at MD 00:21:36.27\00:21:40.64 Anderson of Houston would say, was that 00:21:40.65\00:21:43.80 he can't get funding for studies and his 00:21:43.81\00:21:46.02 studies are showing turmeric, not only 00:21:46.03\00:21:48.16 preventing, but actually treating breast cancer. 00:21:48.17\00:21:51.41 Treating a multiple myeloma, treating a 00:21:52.56\00:21:56.28 number of different cancers that are very 00:21:56.29\00:21:58.18 difficult to treat and he's having success 00:21:58.19\00:22:00.39 with that, at least in animal studies and 00:22:00.40\00:22:03.69 he's wanting to branch over human studies, 00:22:03.70\00:22:05.65 but he's having trouble funding it, 00:22:06.06\00:22:07.41 because you can't get it from companies and 00:22:07.94\00:22:10.19 you have to try to get it from the U.S. 00:22:10.20\00:22:11.54 Government and his arm of the U.S. 00:22:11.55\00:22:13.08 Government and help him fund his last 00:22:13.09\00:22:14.74 turmeric study was the department of defense. 00:22:14.75\00:22:16.74 Amazing, okay so you know, you know we 00:22:17.65\00:22:20.55 talk about the plant sources, I want to just 00:22:20.56\00:22:22.07 add one of the questions some 00:22:22.08\00:22:23.84 companies are taking these phytochemicals, 00:22:23.85\00:22:27.12 these antioxidants and they are putting them 00:22:27.49\00:22:29.55 into pill form and different things. 00:22:29.56\00:22:32.00 Is there anything to that? 00:22:32.29\00:22:34.13 Well, in pill they're gonna be good too. 00:22:34.91\00:22:36.81 But if you want to get tomorrow's 00:22:37.28\00:22:39.78 phytochemicals that have been shown to 00:22:40.02\00:22:42.08 prevent cancer, you will get it in today's 00:22:42.09\00:22:44.23 fruits and vegetables, because that's where 00:22:44.24\00:22:46.12 they get it from, and so I recommend 00:22:46.13\00:22:48.79 eating the fruits and vegetables, because 00:22:48.80\00:22:50.11 there's probably even other beneficial 00:22:50.12\00:22:51.59 properties besides the lycopene in the C and 00:22:51.60\00:22:54.05 the E that we don't know about. 00:22:54.06\00:22:55.41 Fiber, all those little things we do know 00:22:55.42\00:22:57.29 about this, but other things as well that 00:22:57.30\00:22:59.22 maybe good for us. Correct. 00:22:59.23\00:23:00.57 Okay, so we're talking about the immune 00:23:00.96\00:23:02.98 system here. We've talked about the 00:23:02.99\00:23:04.30 protective foods, we talked about vitamin 00:23:04.31\00:23:06.99 C, we talked about vitamin E, we talked 00:23:07.00\00:23:09.27 about the fruit that were antioxidants, 00:23:09.28\00:23:11.47 we talked about the vegetables that were 00:23:11.48\00:23:13.29 antioxidants, anything else for boosting the 00:23:13.30\00:23:15.85 immune system? Exercise, physical 00:23:15.86\00:23:17.69 exercise actually will improve endorphin 00:23:17.70\00:23:21.17 level, it will actually boost natural 00:23:21.18\00:23:23.96 endorphin levels. Endorphin is a 00:23:23.97\00:23:25.68 chemotherapy agent that we use in certain 00:23:25.69\00:23:27.89 types of cancers but your own white blood 00:23:27.90\00:23:30.66 cells make it and it will make more by 00:23:30.67\00:23:33.23 vigorous exercise, also improving the 00:23:33.24\00:23:36.71 interleukin levels. It improved interleukin 00:23:36.72\00:23:38.67 one, interleukin two and it's also been 00:23:38.68\00:23:40.52 shown to improve natural killer cells. 00:23:40.53\00:23:42.75 Natural killer cells don't work by the 00:23:43.28\00:23:45.01 antibody system which was another 00:23:45.02\00:23:46.81 system of the immune defense that the body 00:23:46.82\00:23:48.79 has, but seem to be able to sniff out 00:23:48.80\00:23:51.51 cancer cells and destroy it. 00:23:51.52\00:23:52.93 It's actually still a mystery as to how the 00:23:52.94\00:23:55.40 natural killer cells work, but we do know 00:23:55.41\00:23:57.33 that exercise improve natural killer cells and 00:23:57.72\00:24:00.15 can even double the amount. 00:24:00.16\00:24:01.33 Okay, so if your exercise is making 00:24:01.82\00:24:03.39 your, your killer cells just mean lean fight 00:24:03.40\00:24:07.02 machines, they can sniff better, they can, 00:24:07.03\00:24:08.96 they can find what's causing the problem. 00:24:08.97\00:24:11.24 Yes, absolutely and so we recommend 00:24:11.79\00:24:14.00 Aerobic physical exercise on a daily 00:24:14.75\00:24:16.74 basis, including a vigorous exercise and 00:24:16.75\00:24:20.14 a lot of people may not feel fit enough to 00:24:20.15\00:24:21.77 do that, but if they alternate vigorous 00:24:21.78\00:24:23.61 exercise with like rest or slow exercise 00:24:23.62\00:24:26.61 maybe 40 seconds each, they can get that 00:24:26.94\00:24:29.73 vigorous exercise and still benefit 00:24:29.74\00:24:31.64 from a great deal. What about obesity? 00:24:31.65\00:24:34.77 You know I've heard that someone who is 00:24:34.78\00:24:35.88 obese has a constant state of kind of 00:24:35.89\00:24:38.17 inflammation or infection, is that true, 00:24:38.18\00:24:40.58 is this something want to try and avoid? 00:24:40.59\00:24:42.02 No, it is true, obesity suppresses the 00:24:42.03\00:24:44.60 immune system as well and that's why 00:24:44.61\00:24:46.01 there have been a number of cancers 00:24:46.02\00:24:47.55 associated with obesity. Cancer of esophagus, 00:24:47.56\00:24:50.58 cancer of colon, prostate, breast, 00:24:50.59\00:24:52.44 lymphoma and the list goes on in regards to 00:24:53.30\00:24:57.17 obesity and its role in helping bring about a 00:24:57.18\00:25:02.39 cancer probably do to it's oppressing effect 00:25:02.40\00:25:04.75 on the immune system, but there 00:25:04.76\00:25:05.93 maybe some other factors as well. 00:25:05.94\00:25:07.43 Okay, exercise, obesity anything 00:25:07.93\00:25:09.35 else with our immune system? 00:25:09.36\00:25:10.39 One of the things about obesity is to 00:25:10.67\00:25:13.39 realize the new way of finding out whether 00:25:13.40\00:25:16.12 you're obese or not. Okay. 00:25:16.13\00:25:17.74 You know of course you can step on the 00:25:18.38\00:25:19.63 scale and that can give you a clue if you 00:25:19.64\00:25:21.97 pinch here and you're and you're pinching 00:25:21.98\00:25:25.33 more than an inch, that's an 00:25:25.34\00:25:27.33 indicator you're obese. 00:25:27.34\00:25:28.48 Now, I'll do it right here. 00:25:28.49\00:25:29.64 Well we're gonna talk about it. 00:25:32.03\00:25:33.57 Dr. Scharpenberg says, you can lay 00:25:34.28\00:25:36.10 down here on the floor and if you put 00:25:36.11\00:25:38.74 your chin down and you can't see your 00:25:38.75\00:25:40.32 feet, that's a sign that you're obese. 00:25:40.33\00:25:42.48 But actually the new scientific way is to do 00:25:43.75\00:25:46.16 a waist to hip measure. You put a measuring 00:25:46.17\00:25:50.62 tape around your waist above where 00:25:50.63\00:25:52.78 your bones are at and I used to say that 00:25:52.79\00:25:55.39 above the bones, but really a lot of people 00:25:56.26\00:25:58.61 would miss their waist measurement if 00:25:58.62\00:26:00.93 they didn't also include the naval in 00:26:00.94\00:26:02.67 that, but some people's naval is way 00:26:02.68\00:26:04.35 down here. So you wanna put the naval 00:26:04.36\00:26:06.70 in that waist measurement and then 00:26:06.71\00:26:08.61 the denominator is the hip measurement and 00:26:09.03\00:26:11.15 that's where the bones are at, and so if the 00:26:11.16\00:26:13.92 waist to hip ratio, yes, is greater than 0.8 00:26:13.93\00:26:18.74 and you're a woman you have an increased 00:26:19.70\00:26:22.70 risk of all the cancers that I have mentioned 00:26:22.71\00:26:25.07 earlier that are associated with obesity. 00:26:25.08\00:26:26.96 You also have an increased risk of 00:26:27.46\00:26:28.61 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease. 00:26:28.62\00:26:31.04 If it's greater than 0.95 and you're man 00:26:31.05\00:26:34.08 you have an increased risk of all 00:26:34.59\00:26:35.82 those cancers as well. Because really when 00:26:35.83\00:26:38.97 you're that obese there, the problem is 00:26:38.98\00:26:41.24 not what it looks like on the outside, 00:26:41.25\00:26:42.54 but what's inside, all of the fat around all 00:26:42.55\00:26:45.14 those organs. Exactly, the abdominal obesity 00:26:45.15\00:26:47.87 is where the risk is at and that's 00:26:47.88\00:26:49.48 what this is measuring. Well we've learned a 00:26:49.49\00:26:53.31 lot about the most important section of 00:26:53.32\00:26:57.09 the supermarket today. Yes. And you know 00:26:57.10\00:27:00.70 people are usually walking right past 00:27:00.71\00:27:02.40 that, going to the diary section and the 00:27:02.41\00:27:04.41 meat section and choosing the first 00:27:04.42\00:27:06.38 section in the store. So you really don't 00:27:06.39\00:27:07.99 even have to shop as long man, if you take 00:27:08.00\00:27:10.68 this to heart, but do take it to heart. 00:27:10.69\00:27:12.56 This is very important. Dr. Nedley, thank you 00:27:12.87\00:27:15.17 so much for being with us today to talk 00:27:15.18\00:27:16.72 about our immune system and the 00:27:16.73\00:27:18.89 department of defense. Is there a spiritual 00:27:18.90\00:27:21.49 lesson you draw from this? 00:27:21.50\00:27:22.56 Well there is a spiritual, we sin is 00:27:22.81\00:27:25.75 spiritual cancer and we need to have 00:27:25.76\00:27:28.31 cancer warning signs, we need to have 00:27:28.32\00:27:30.26 screening test for sin like David did and we 00:27:30.27\00:27:32.66 need to have prevention where we 00:27:32.67\00:27:34.16 avoid spiritual carcinogens and also 00:27:34.17\00:27:36.74 avoid, boost our spiritual immune system 00:27:36.75\00:27:39.68 and then that would give us life eternal. 00:27:39.94\00:27:42.18 Good advice. Thanks so much for joining us 00:27:43.40\00:27:45.13 today and we hope as a result of today's 00:27:45.14\00:27:47.03 program you're gonna go to the supermarket 00:27:47.04\00:27:48.57 and buy those foods, protect yourself, 00:27:48.58\00:27:50.62 protect your kids, your family, 00:27:50.63\00:27:51.87 your friends and we hope that God richly 00:27:51.88\00:27:54.20 blesses you, and you have health that lasts 00:27:54.21\00:27:56.48 for a lifetime and you know him as well. 00:27:56.49\00:27:58.73
