The following program presents principles designed 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.78 to promote good health and is not intended 00:00:03.81\00:00:06.03 to take the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:06.06\00:00:09.37 The opinions and ideas expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.40\00:00:12.68 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:12.71\00:00:15.29 about the information presented. 00:00:15.32\00:00:17.15 Hello and welcome to "Health for A Lifetime." 00:00:50.73\00:00:52.35 We're glad you joined us today 00:00:52.38\00:00:53.75 and today we're gonna be talking about a disease 00:00:53.78\00:00:56.06 that strikes fear in the heart of people 00:00:56.09\00:00:57.75 who hear the word and that's cancer. 00:00:57.78\00:00:59.69 And talking with us today is Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:00:59.72\00:01:02.75 He is a specialist in internal medicine from Ardmore, Oklahoma. 00:01:02.78\00:01:05.96 And you see a lot of people that have cancer. 00:01:05.99\00:01:08.25 Yes, actually I diagnose it almost on a daily basis. 00:01:08.28\00:01:12.01 What is cancer exactly? 00:01:12.04\00:01:13.85 Cancer is a change in the genetic material, 00:01:13.88\00:01:17.21 something gets into the gene 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.93 and actually changes the cell into an abnormal cell 00:01:18.96\00:01:22.65 but the body doesn't recognize it as being abnormal 00:01:22.68\00:01:25.59 and so it's allowed to grow and multiply and spread. 00:01:25.62\00:01:30.21 And then it causes problems 00:01:30.24\00:01:31.61 because it cuts off supply to this 00:01:31.64\00:01:33.01 or that and gets in the way? 00:01:33.04\00:01:34.41 That's right. What is the impact of-- 00:01:34.44\00:01:38.80 of cancer on this nation and around the world? 00:01:38.83\00:01:41.64 Well, we have a graphic that actually shows 00:01:41.67\00:01:44.38 the statistics on the impact. It's pretty incredible. 00:01:44.41\00:01:47.74 One out of every two men will get it 00:01:47.77\00:01:49.53 at some point in their life. 00:01:49.56\00:01:51.25 One out of every three women will get it. 00:01:51.28\00:01:53.46 And one out of every four deaths 00:01:53.49\00:01:55.27 in this country is currently from cancer. 00:01:55.30\00:01:59.31 And that's pretty phenomenal and that's not talking 00:01:59.34\00:02:01.52 about just the benign skin cancers, 00:02:01.55\00:02:03.61 many of the skin cancers, the squamous cell 00:02:03.64\00:02:06.81 and the basal cells are not harmful 00:02:06.84\00:02:09.67 and they could be easily removed and detected. 00:02:09.70\00:02:12.05 But this is talking about 00:02:12.08\00:02:13.45 the life threatening varieties of cancer. 00:02:13.48\00:02:16.42 And so many people just think that 00:02:16.45\00:02:18.82 they have to hope that they don't get this disease 00:02:18.85\00:02:23.14 but they don't realize there's a lot of things they could do. 00:02:23.17\00:02:26.17 Now they could prevent them from getting it down the road. 00:02:26.20\00:02:29.57 So this is like almost now the number one killer. 00:02:29.60\00:02:31.70 Usually, we talk about heart disease being number one. 00:02:31.73\00:02:33.77 Has cancer surpassed heart disease? 00:02:33.80\00:02:35.53 Well, if you look at just the statistics 00:02:35.56\00:02:37.61 on coronary artery disease, cancer has surpassed it now. 00:02:37.64\00:02:42.77 If you take a look at the cause of coronary artery disease, 00:02:42.80\00:02:45.74 which is atherosclerosis which would involve stroke 00:02:45.77\00:02:48.68 and a lot of kidney failure etcetera, 00:02:48.71\00:02:50.67 atherosclerosis would still be above cancer. 00:02:50.70\00:02:53.73 But if you're just looking at the artery disease 00:02:53.76\00:02:56.54 affecting the heart, cancer is now number one. 00:02:56.57\00:03:00.37 And you're saying that these are the big cancers 00:03:00.40\00:03:02.16 you're talking about in terms of impact in these statistics. 00:03:02.19\00:03:05.92 It's not you said basal cell or squamous cell or-- 00:03:05.95\00:03:10.95 Right 'cause virtually, I mean, 00:03:10.98\00:03:12.52 a whole lot of people will get those 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.62 just as a result of aging and being outdoors. 00:03:14.65\00:03:18.16 Is that--is this including melanoma 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.37 that you're talking about? 00:03:20.40\00:03:21.77 Yes. This would be including melanoma. 00:03:21.80\00:03:23.29 Melanoma we would include as a life-threatening cancer. 00:03:23.32\00:03:27.79 Sure, I mean, yeah, that's a huge problem. 00:03:27.82\00:03:32.10 Okay, then so we've seen the impact. 00:03:32.13\00:03:36.03 Maybe we should talk about warning signs? 00:03:36.06\00:03:38.18 Yes, absolutely, because many people 00:03:38.21\00:03:42.56 ignore the warning signs and then run into trouble. 00:03:42.59\00:03:46.08 In fact, just last week, 00:03:46.11\00:03:47.84 I had a patient ignore one of these warning signs 00:03:47.87\00:03:50.50 for over a year and was absolutely shocked 00:03:50.53\00:03:54.15 when he finally found out that he had cancer. 00:03:54.18\00:03:56.87 He just had no clue. 00:03:56.90\00:03:58.27 And if he would've actually come to us at the first sign of this, 00:03:58.30\00:04:02.90 we probably could've spared him some very dis-forming surgery 00:04:02.93\00:04:08.36 that he is now gonna have to undergo. 00:04:08.39\00:04:10.40 So these warning signs would be like not watching 00:04:10.43\00:04:13.13 the traffic lights or going in the wrong way 00:04:13.16\00:04:14.84 in a one-way street when it doesn't look like 00:04:14.87\00:04:16.42 there's anyone there 00:04:16.45\00:04:17.82 but then all the sudden traffic jam comes. 00:04:17.85\00:04:19.59 Exactly. Okay. 00:04:19.62\00:04:20.99 We have a graphic on the warning signs as well. Okay. 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.27 And there're seven different cancer warning signs. 00:04:23.30\00:04:26.83 A change in bowel or bladder habits 00:04:26.86\00:04:29.07 and that can occur either way you can have constipation 00:04:29.10\00:04:32.24 or you could go into diarrhea 00:04:32.27\00:04:33.75 and if that persists that really needs to be checked out. 00:04:33.78\00:04:36.96 Change in bladder habits can occur either way, 00:04:36.99\00:04:38.80 either increase in frequency or decrease. 00:04:38.83\00:04:41.82 A sore that does not heal. 00:04:41.85\00:04:44.03 Would be the second cancer warning sign 00:04:44.06\00:04:46.20 and sores are supposed to heal after a couple of weeks 00:04:46.23\00:04:48.75 and if they don't, need to be checked out. 00:04:48.78\00:04:50.93 Unusual bleeding or discharge. 00:04:50.96\00:04:53.28 Now this is the one 00:04:53.31\00:04:54.68 that my patient ignored for over a year. 00:04:54.71\00:04:58.02 He attributed it to hemorrhoids. 00:04:58.05\00:04:59.42 And now is severely disappointed at himself. 00:04:59.45\00:05:02.93 Thickening of a lump in the breast 00:05:02.96\00:05:04.46 or elsewhere is the fourth cancer warning sign. 00:05:04.49\00:05:07.65 And that--this is why we recommend women 00:05:07.68\00:05:11.54 actually check theirs breast monthly. 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.02 Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing. 00:05:14.05\00:05:16.32 This highlights the fastest rising cancer in the U.S. 00:05:16.35\00:05:20.49 which is cancer of the esophagus. 00:05:20.52\00:05:23.35 And if you've had indigestion for more than five years, 00:05:23.38\00:05:25.85 it needs to be checked out. 00:05:25.88\00:05:27.25 If you have any difficulty in swallowing 00:05:27.28\00:05:29.01 where the food kinda hangs up before it goes down, 00:05:29.04\00:05:31.36 that needs to be checked out. 00:05:31.39\00:05:32.89 Or obvious change in a wart or a mole 00:05:32.92\00:05:36.17 that would also need to be checked out. 00:05:36.20\00:05:38.07 A change in its color or in its size or shape. 00:05:38.10\00:05:42.20 Nagging cough or hoarseness. 00:05:42.23\00:05:44.20 After a cold, it's of course 00:05:44.23\00:05:45.70 common to have that for maybe two or three weeks. 00:05:45.73\00:05:47.63 But if that goes on for more than two or three weeks, 00:05:47.66\00:05:49.82 it really needs to be checked out. 00:05:49.85\00:05:51.58 So all of these warning signs you probably have stories 00:05:51.61\00:05:54.00 about people that have neglected these. 00:05:54.03\00:05:56.42 Absolutely. And you talked about the one 00:05:56.45\00:06:00.29 that was having unusual discharge 00:06:00.32\00:06:02.46 or bleeding with hemorrhoids 00:06:02.49\00:06:04.35 and you've seen the others with the coughing--nagging cough? 00:06:04.38\00:06:08.98 Yes, we have. Some people put up with a cough for six months, 00:06:09.01\00:06:12.75 you know, before getting checked out. 00:06:12.78\00:06:14.28 And what's that usually sign of cancer of a nagging cough? 00:06:14.31\00:06:18.66 Often cancer of the lung or the bronchial tubes 00:06:18.69\00:06:21.26 supplying the lung, could be cancer of the larynx as well. 00:06:21.29\00:06:24.26 Yeah, go through these warning signs again 00:06:24.29\00:06:25.77 and just tell me what kind of cancer 00:06:25.80\00:06:27.17 maybe would be associated with them. 00:06:27.20\00:06:29.35 Well, the change in bowel habits would be cancer of the colon. 00:06:29.38\00:06:33.35 That's the second leading cause of cancer. 00:06:33.38\00:06:35.62 Change in urinary habits 00:06:35.65\00:06:37.36 could be cancer of the bladder or the kidney. 00:06:37.39\00:06:40.90 The change in a wart or mole that's going to be melanoma, 00:06:40.93\00:06:45.14 the type of skin cancer-- Talk about that a little bit 00:06:45.17\00:06:47.34 because I think it's really important 00:06:47.37\00:06:48.74 and lots of people have warts or moles. 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.43 A dermatologist the other day said if you have 30 or more, 00:06:50.46\00:06:53.73 you know, warts or these moles or different things 00:06:53.76\00:06:56.67 you're at higher risk, 50 for sure 00:06:56.70\00:06:58.76 but what kind of changes are you looking for? 00:06:58.79\00:07:02.05 Well, we're looking for a change in color, change in size, 00:07:02.08\00:07:07.30 or change in the actual shape of the mole. 00:07:07.33\00:07:11.36 And so that's what we-- 00:07:11.39\00:07:12.76 Size, shape, or color, okay. Yeah. 00:07:12.79\00:07:17.01 And some of the other warning signs we mentioned? 00:07:17.04\00:07:19.70 Yeah, the thickening, the breast of course is breast cancer 00:07:19.73\00:07:23.37 but notice it also said lumps elsewhere. 00:07:23.40\00:07:26.65 Many people can get lymphoma 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.60 or can get a cancer that affects the lymph glands 00:07:29.63\00:07:32.85 and so they might get enlargement in the neck area, 00:07:32.88\00:07:36.50 here is where we check for nodes, 00:07:36.53\00:07:38.41 under the arm is where we check for. 00:07:38.44\00:07:40.00 Even the groin area, there can be lymph nodes there, 00:07:40.03\00:07:42.62 little bumps that crop up 00:07:42.65\00:07:44.45 and if those bumps crop up it really needs to be checked out. 00:07:44.48\00:07:47.68 Yeah, so any unusual thing. 00:07:47.71\00:07:49.08 And is that true breast cancer is even a problem for men? 00:07:49.11\00:07:51.89 Yes, 1% of breast cancers are in men 00:07:51.92\00:07:55.48 and so it's a good idea for men to check it as well. 00:07:55.51\00:07:59.58 Fortunately, it's easier to check 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.09 because they're not as big or pendulous in a man 00:08:01.12\00:08:05.14 but it's a good idea just to do that ever so often. 00:08:05.17\00:08:08.87 So these are just like the traffic lights that tell us, 00:08:08.90\00:08:11.72 say, if it's flashing take a look and check it out. 00:08:11.75\00:08:14.50 We've talked about the impact. 00:08:14.53\00:08:15.90 We've talked about warning signs. 00:08:15.93\00:08:17.30 Probably what you're saying 00:08:17.33\00:08:18.70 then is that screening is very important? 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.55 Screening is important simply because most people 00:08:21.58\00:08:26.29 even if they follow the cancer warning signs 00:08:26.32\00:08:29.24 are gonna still end up with cancer spread to vital organs 00:08:29.27\00:08:32.25 before the first warning sign develops. 00:08:32.28\00:08:35.06 Okay, so this means even though look for the warning signs but-- 00:08:35.09\00:08:38.80 The warning signs are not we're it's all at. 00:08:38.83\00:08:40.86 In fact, about 5% of cancer deaths could be spared. 00:08:40.89\00:08:43.60 And that's significant 'cause there's over 500,000 deaths. 00:08:43.63\00:08:46.14 So we're talking 25,000 peoples lives could be spared every year 00:08:46.17\00:08:50.98 if they would pay attention to warning signs. Okay. 00:08:51.01\00:08:54.02 cancer deaths 00:08:54.05\00:08:56.70 and so that doesn't take care of the other part. 00:08:56.73\00:08:59.64 And so that's why the American Cancer Society recommends 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.12 screening and screening means you have no symptoms at all. 00:09:02.15\00:09:05.62 You're feeling great. You're looking great. 00:09:05.65\00:09:07.75 And here you're having to undergo a test to see 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.36 whether you have early cancer and that can save lives. 00:09:10.39\00:09:13.27 Okay, so what kind of screenings? All right. 00:09:13.30\00:09:16.20 We also have a graphic in regards to the screening. 00:09:16.23\00:09:21.18 Physical Exam is a screening test 00:09:21.21\00:09:23.47 with attention to the thyroid, lymph nodes, 00:09:23.50\00:09:26.43 oral cavity, skin, testicles, and ovaries. 00:09:26.46\00:09:30.32 Those are the things that should be checked 00:09:30.35\00:09:31.80 at least every two or three years, 00:09:31.83\00:09:33.55 in some instances more often. 00:09:33.58\00:09:35.43 A stool slide test for microscopic blood 00:09:35.46\00:09:38.11 is recommended in anyone over the age of 40. 00:09:38.14\00:09:42.01 And then a sigmoidoscopy or actually a colonoscopy. 00:09:42.04\00:09:47.53 Colonoscopy would be better at checking the entire colon 00:09:47.56\00:09:50.08 since colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death. 00:09:50.11\00:09:52.87 That should occur at age 50 if you have no symptoms. 00:09:52.90\00:09:56.13 And then every five years maybe if you have a whole colonoscopy 00:09:56.16\00:10:00.07 and it's negative you could wait 10 years for your next one. 00:10:00.10\00:10:03.22 PSA test for men is recommended now 00:10:03.25\00:10:06.09 over the age of 50 in an annual basis. 00:10:06.12\00:10:09.97 And then in women 00:10:10.00\00:10:11.37 there are additional cancer warning signs 00:10:11.40\00:10:13.60 that I don't think we have the graphic on that. 00:10:13.63\00:10:16.18 But the breast exam once a year after the age of 40-- 00:10:16.21\00:10:22.49 By a clinician. By a clinician and then mammography 00:10:22.52\00:10:26.52 after 40 about every two years after 50 every year. 00:10:26.55\00:10:30.49 In women, it's also recommended 00:10:30.52\00:10:32.30 that they undergo a pelvic exam 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.47 and Pap smear actually at the age 00:10:34.50\00:10:38.12 that sexual activity begins. 00:10:38.15\00:10:40.32 And the reason for that is that cervical cancer 00:10:40.35\00:10:43.31 is a sexually transmitted disease. 00:10:43.34\00:10:44.93 It's transmitted by Chlamydia 7% of the time, 00:10:44.96\00:10:48.31 papillomavirus, the other 93%. 00:10:48.34\00:10:51.66 And there's only two groups of women 00:10:51.69\00:10:53.07 who are not at risk for cervical cancer. 00:10:53.10\00:10:56.57 And that is women who've obviously been single 00:10:56.60\00:10:59.48 and not had sexual relations 00:10:59.51\00:11:01.45 or the other group of women would be women 00:11:01.48\00:11:04.09 who've had a monogamous relationship with a man for life 00:11:04.12\00:11:08.39 and that man has also had 00:11:08.42\00:11:10.43 a monogamous relationship with her 00:11:10.46\00:11:12.82 and she would not be at risk. 00:11:12.85\00:11:15.48 And of course today in our society 00:11:15.51\00:11:17.74 that would signify the minority of adult women 00:11:17.77\00:11:22.80 and so that's why the Pap smear is recommended. 00:11:22.83\00:11:25.80 Couple of things, sigmoidoscopy you said 00:11:25.83\00:11:28.56 which is I guess that part of the colon not the entire colon 00:11:28.59\00:11:31.80 but just the sigmoid part. 00:11:31.83\00:11:33.43 Yeah, it's the first 60 meters from the anus on up. 00:11:33.46\00:11:36.81 That's where about 60% or 70% of colon cancers occur. 00:11:36.84\00:11:40.62 Someone told me that African-Americans 00:11:40.65\00:11:42.57 they don't see their colon cancers 00:11:42.60\00:11:44.79 diagnosed by just a sigmoid 00:11:44.82\00:11:46.41 because it's on the other side usually? 00:11:46.44\00:11:48.05 Well, and also you know 00:11:48.08\00:11:50.32 white Americans and Asian Americans too. 00:11:50.35\00:11:52.84 Thirty percent of cancers 00:11:52.87\00:11:54.65 won't be detected in the sigmoid. 00:11:54.68\00:11:56.47 And actually I would prefer that that recommendation 00:11:56.50\00:12:00.13 by the American Cancer Society be updated to include 00:12:00.16\00:12:03.42 the entire colon 'cause I've had people. 00:12:03.45\00:12:05.12 In fact, I just had a white Minnesota person 00:12:05.15\00:12:08.76 passing through town on his way back to Minnesota 00:12:08.79\00:12:13.63 for the spring he wintered in Southern Texas. 00:12:13.66\00:12:17.97 And he got a bowel blockage. 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.36 And he'd had his sigmoidoscopy screenings. 00:12:20.39\00:12:23.10 He had done all the screenings that were recommended. 00:12:23.13\00:12:25.79 And he'd never had surgery before 00:12:25.82\00:12:27.78 so when he'd a bowel blockage, 00:12:27.81\00:12:29.18 I thought uh-oh and we went and put a scope in there 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.82 and sure enough he had a cancer in the cecum 00:12:31.85\00:12:35.54 that was blocking his small bowel. 00:12:35.57\00:12:37.59 And it already spread to vital organs. 00:12:37.62\00:12:39.50 And so very disappointing 00:12:39.53\00:12:41.65 and so it's better to get the full screening test 00:12:41.68\00:12:44.68 in my mind which would be the colonoscopy. 00:12:44.71\00:12:47.17 So again the warning signs are things 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.43 that might be too late already 00:12:49.46\00:12:51.36 I mean 'cause the warning is there 00:12:51.39\00:12:53.12 but the screenings are kinda like a helicopter 00:12:53.15\00:12:55.13 going over the, you know, looking all over to see 00:12:55.16\00:12:57.75 if there is traffic jams here and there that you couldn't see 00:12:57.78\00:13:00.34 just driving down the road of life. 00:13:00.37\00:13:03.06 And these things are just important to do. 00:13:03.09\00:13:04.91 We're talking with Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:13:04.94\00:13:06.65 We're talking about cancer. 00:13:06.68\00:13:08.21 We've had some excellent advice here 00:13:08.24\00:13:10.15 this first half in terms of warning signs and screening. 00:13:10.18\00:13:13.37 I hope that you are following through on this. 00:13:13.40\00:13:15.85 It might not be a bad idea to jot these things down 00:13:15.88\00:13:18.71 and talk to your physician about them today 00:13:18.74\00:13:20.41 and get these things scheduled. 00:13:20.44\00:13:21.81 When we come back, we're gonna talk 00:13:21.84\00:13:23.21 a little further about how to avoid cancer. 00:13:23.24\00:13:26.01 Join us when we come back. 00:13:26.04\00:13:27.41 Are you confused about the endless strain with new 00:13:30.07\00:13:32.96 and often contradictory health information with companies 00:13:32.99\00:13:36.69 trying to sell new drugs 00:13:36.72\00:13:38.13 and special interest groups paying for studies 00:13:38.16\00:13:40.27 that spin the facts? 00:13:40.30\00:13:41.86 Where can you find a common sense approach to health? 00:13:41.89\00:13:44.87 One way is to ask for your free copy of Dr. Arnott's 00:13:44.90\00:13:47.98 "24 Realistic Ways To Improve Your Health." 00:13:48.01\00:13:50.69 Dr. Timothy Arnott and the Lifestyle Center of America 00:13:50.72\00:13:53.70 produced this helpful booklet of 24 short 00:13:53.73\00:13:56.39 practical health tips based on scientific research 00:13:56.42\00:13:59.12 and The Bible that will help you 00:13:59.15\00:14:00.83 live longer, happier, and healthier. 00:14:00.86\00:14:03.38 For example, did you know that women 00:14:03.41\00:14:05.36 who drink more water lower the risk of heart attack 00:14:05.39\00:14:08.44 or that seven to eight hours of sleep a night 00:14:08.47\00:14:10.51 can minimize your risk of ever developing diabetes? 00:14:52.41\00:14:53.78 What kind of percentage would be avoiding cancer 00:14:53.81\00:14:56.31 if they did the screenings? 00:14:56.34\00:14:57.71 About another 5% so about another 25,000 lives 00:14:57.74\00:15:00.33 could be spared every year by undergoing cancer screening 00:15:00.36\00:15:03.25 and so together those two would be able to avoid 00:15:03.28\00:15:06.38 over 50,000 deaths per year. Now you have the stomach here. 00:15:06.41\00:15:09.65 You were saying that one of the most common things 00:15:09.68\00:15:11.58 is to pick up on this again one of the most common 00:15:11.61\00:15:15.79 cancers is a cancer of the esophagus, 00:15:15.82\00:15:18.75 the cancer of the what is this, a stomach? 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.86 Yes, this is the stomach but the fastest growing cancer 00:15:21.89\00:15:25.12 in America right now is occurring right in here. 00:15:25.15\00:15:27.73 And that is the cancer of the esophagus, 00:15:27.76\00:15:30.76 the bottom portion of the esophagus. 00:15:30.79\00:15:32.64 And you can see actually on the screen 00:15:32.67\00:15:34.77 how the color of that esophagus is changed. 00:15:34.80\00:15:37.64 Normally, that color is a pale color like up in here. 00:15:37.67\00:15:41.02 But that color down there is a change 00:15:41.05\00:15:43.77 in the lining of the esophagus 00:15:43.80\00:15:45.82 and that change is called Barrett's esophagus. 00:15:45.85\00:15:48.86 Barrett's esophagus. 00:15:48.89\00:15:50.31 Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous condition. 00:15:50.34\00:15:54.42 That will lead to cancer in many cases 00:15:54.45\00:15:57.46 and Barrett's is actually caused by reflux. 00:15:57.49\00:16:00.32 Reflux so in other words heartburn? 00:16:00.35\00:16:02.47 That's right heartburn, acid coming 00:16:02.50\00:16:04.21 from the stomach area up into the esophagus. 00:16:04.24\00:16:08.92 Now the stomach is supposed to have acid 00:16:08.95\00:16:12.34 'cause that's where digestion occurs. 00:16:12.37\00:16:13.85 But there's a sphincter here that's supposed 00:16:13.88\00:16:15.66 to stay closed so that acid doesn't come back up in here 00:16:15.69\00:16:19.20 but when acid does come back up in there 00:16:19.23\00:16:21.51 over the course of months and years 00:16:21.54\00:16:23.83 that mucosa can change into Barrett's esophagus. 00:16:23.86\00:16:26.84 While we're down in my stomach, 00:16:26.87\00:16:28.24 what was that little red thing down there? 00:16:28.27\00:16:29.64 That little red thing is a peptic ulcer. 00:16:29.67\00:16:32.08 Okay, well, we may want to take care of that too. 00:16:32.11\00:16:34.30 But let me ask you how did you get down 00:16:34.33\00:16:35.73 into my stomach to look at this? 00:16:35.76\00:16:37.86 Through a scope. Through a scope. 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.26 And does that scope come this way or the other way? 00:16:39.29\00:16:41.01 No, it comes through the mouth. 00:16:41.04\00:16:42.52 And so we give you medicines so you're sleeping. 00:16:42.55\00:16:44.88 We come down with a scope 00:16:44.91\00:16:46.29 about as big around as my little finger here. 00:16:46.32\00:16:48.47 And so we can go down in here 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.84 and find the Barrett's esophagus. 00:16:50.87\00:16:53.18 You do this in your office or on the road? 00:16:53.21\00:16:55.73 We do it in the hospital setting or in an endoscopy center. 00:16:55.76\00:17:00.09 All right. So you give someone a little something 00:17:00.12\00:17:02.63 to knock him out and then look down there. 00:17:02.66\00:17:05.04 And this should be checked if you're having heartburn 00:17:05.07\00:17:07.19 for how long did you say? 00:17:07.22\00:17:08.59 If you've had heartburn for more than five years, 00:17:08.62\00:17:10.32 it is recommended that you have an endoscopy to make sure 00:17:10.35\00:17:12.72 you don't have that premalignant condition. 00:17:12.75\00:17:14.68 And if you don't deal with this, 00:17:14.71\00:17:17.21 how deadly is esophageal cancer? 00:17:17.24\00:17:19.43 Very deadly, death within six months 00:17:19.46\00:17:21.90 in the vast majority of case. 00:17:21.93\00:17:23.31 If you're lucky, you may live a year after diagnosis. 00:17:23.34\00:17:26.60 And that's why we're trying to catch it in the preface. 00:17:26.63\00:17:29.69 If we catch it in the preface, we can do something about it. 00:17:29.72\00:17:32.55 And a lot of people just cover their heartburn and indigestion. 00:17:32.58\00:17:35.05 In fact, if you've had to take, you know, 00:17:35.08\00:17:37.95 over the counter Prilosec or Pepcid, 00:17:37.98\00:17:40.25 or antacids on a regular basis and you think, 00:17:40.28\00:17:43.14 "Well, I don't have that much heartburn 00:17:43.17\00:17:44.61 'cause I'm taking these drugs that isn't-- 00:17:44.64\00:17:47.82 You're masking the symptom. Exactly. 00:17:47.85\00:17:51.62 So, yeah, after you start eating at the right times 00:17:51.65\00:17:54.61 and everything if you're still having heartburn, 00:17:54.64\00:17:56.01 that's a real sign. 00:17:56.04\00:17:57.41 In other words, if you're eating late at night 00:17:57.44\00:17:58.88 and the curse doesn't come causeless the Bible says. 00:17:58.91\00:18:02.13 But if you're eating the right time 00:18:02.16\00:18:03.60 and you still have that that's even probably 00:18:03.63\00:18:05.05 more of a warning sign. What do you say? 00:18:05.08\00:18:06.45 Yeah, absolutely. So cancer, you know, 00:18:06.48\00:18:10.25 we've talked about the warning signs. 00:18:10.28\00:18:11.65 We talked about screening but is it true or false that, 00:18:11.68\00:18:14.00 I mean, each of us have to encounter cancer cells 00:18:14.03\00:18:16.28 each day in our own body? 00:18:16.31\00:18:17.74 Is that true or is that false? I've heard that. 00:18:17.77\00:18:19.30 Well, not necessarily cancer cells. 00:18:19.33\00:18:21.94 They may be getting closer to that. 00:18:21.97\00:18:24.20 There's kind of a gradation just like with Barrett's esophagus 00:18:24.23\00:18:28.90 going to pre-cancer and then the cancer. 00:18:28.93\00:18:31.88 There is dysplastic cells that can occur 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.27 that are not necessarily frank cancer cells 00:18:34.30\00:18:36.62 that our body can sniff out and destroy 00:18:36.65\00:18:40.20 through its own immune system. 00:18:40.23\00:18:41.73 Well, let's talk about that because I think 00:18:41.76\00:18:43.13 prevention is probably the key here. 00:18:43.16\00:18:44.67 And so it's a lot easier to get out of a-- 00:18:44.70\00:18:48.91 avoid a traffic jam than to get into one. 00:18:48.94\00:18:50.68 So that's why we sent 00:18:50.71\00:18:52.08 the helicopter up for the screening. 00:18:52.11\00:18:53.48 And the warning signs we put on 00:18:53.51\00:18:55.05 our CB radios and our walky talkies 00:18:55.08\00:18:56.79 but what about preventing it all together? 00:18:56.82\00:18:59.74 What kind of things can we do? 00:18:59.77\00:19:01.14 Well, there's two primary ways 00:19:01.17\00:19:02.54 that we can prevent cancer. 00:19:02.57\00:19:04.12 One is by avoiding carcinogens 00:19:04.15\00:19:05.78 and the other is by boosting the immune system. 00:19:05.81\00:19:07.96 So avoiding the carcinogens is another way of saying cancer 00:19:07.99\00:19:10.88 causing agents and what would those-- 00:19:10.91\00:19:12.48 be those things that we need to avoid? 00:19:12.51\00:19:14.66 Number one carcinogen is tobacco in any form 00:19:14.69\00:19:18.43 and so whether it's chewed or whether it's smoked, 00:19:18.46\00:19:21.23 it has carcinogenic substances in it 00:19:21.26\00:19:24.35 and it can cause cancer of the lung, 00:19:24.38\00:19:26.04 the lip, the throat, the mouth, the esophagus actually. 00:19:26.07\00:19:31.14 What we just talked about twice is likely in smokers, 00:19:31.17\00:19:34.21 stomach twice is likely, 00:19:34.24\00:19:35.72 a liver cancer is twice is likely in smokers, 00:19:35.75\00:19:38.87 cancer of the kidney and bladder four to eight times is likely, 00:19:38.90\00:19:41.48 cancer of the pancreas twice is likely, 00:19:41.51\00:19:44.26 even cancer of the penis in men significantly increased. 00:19:44.29\00:19:48.69 So that's the entire what they'd call alimentary canal 00:19:48.72\00:19:51.37 everywhere that goes. Yeah. 00:19:51.40\00:19:53.32 And even though you're not inhaling 00:19:53.35\00:19:55.02 into your stomach somehow it gets there. 00:19:55.05\00:19:56.69 Exactly, it goes through the bloodstream. 00:19:56.72\00:19:58.59 Okay. So those are the carcinogens to avoid-- 00:19:58.62\00:20:02.17 But it's one carcinogen-- And its effect. 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.32 What's another one? Another one that the world 00:20:04.35\00:20:06.94 is largely not aware of is alcohol. Alcohol? 00:20:06.97\00:20:10.05 Yes, alcohol actually increases 00:20:10.08\00:20:12.57 the risk of esophageal cancer as well. 00:20:12.60\00:20:15.03 It also increases the risk of liver cancer significantly. 00:20:15.06\00:20:18.81 And it also increases the risk of 00:20:18.84\00:20:21.18 the throat cancers, the pharyngeal cancers. 00:20:21.21\00:20:24.33 Most of those cancers occur in those 00:20:24.36\00:20:25.89 who are drinking alcohol regularly 00:20:25.92\00:20:28.38 in rather large amounts 00:20:28.41\00:20:30.72 what would normally be considered alcoholism. 00:20:30.75\00:20:33.91 But there're two forms of cancer that do not occur in alcoholics 00:20:33.94\00:20:37.16 but significantly increase 00:20:37.19\00:20:38.81 the risk in just moderate drinkers. 00:20:38.84\00:20:40.85 And one of those is breast cancer. 00:20:40.88\00:20:43.26 Over 100 studies now have documented 00:20:43.29\00:20:45.69 that alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer. 00:20:45.72\00:20:49.48 And it is incredible that even 00:20:49.51\00:20:52.86 one drink every 15 days in a woman 00:20:52.89\00:20:55.14 can increase the risk of breast cancer by 60%. 00:20:55.17\00:20:57.87 Sixty percent just one drink every 15 days. 00:20:57.90\00:21:00.39 So just do not drink at all is the message? 00:21:00.42\00:21:02.97 Yeah, absolutely and you know, 00:21:03.00\00:21:04.52 what amazes me is that even though that information is clear 00:21:04.55\00:21:09.82 and over 100 studies documenting this worldwide 00:21:09.85\00:21:13.11 when those studies come out the evening news channels 00:21:13.14\00:21:16.40 do not broadcast those studies. Yeah. 00:21:16.43\00:21:19.18 When there is a study that comes out showing 00:21:19.21\00:21:21.09 that maybe heart disease is decreased a little bit 00:21:21.12\00:21:23.50 'cause alcohol will raise the HDL 00:21:23.53\00:21:26.13 that is broadcast on the evening news 00:21:26.16\00:21:28.38 and so alcohol-- the media uses a filter 00:21:28.41\00:21:32.45 in reporting the alcohol studies 00:21:32.48\00:21:34.39 and I think its unconscionable that they're doing 00:21:34.42\00:21:37.23 that because many people don't recognize 00:21:37.26\00:21:40.49 that they maybe trading one disease for another. 00:21:40.52\00:21:42.46 In fact, if you drink enough alcohol, 00:21:42.49\00:21:44.02 you get cirrhosis of the liver. 00:21:44.05\00:21:46.76 You only have 25% chance of dying of heart disease 00:21:46.79\00:21:49.55 compared to some of the general population 00:21:49.58\00:21:51.45 but you traded it for cirrhosis 00:21:51.48\00:21:53.70 and many people are trading it for cancer and don't realize it. 00:21:53.73\00:21:56.61 Well, I say Dr. Nedley for the evening news. 00:21:56.64\00:22:00.49 Okay, so we have tobacco. We have alcohol. 00:22:00.52\00:22:03.12 Any other things we want to avoid? 00:22:03.15\00:22:04.52 Caffeine. Okay. 00:22:04.55\00:22:05.92 Caffeine increases reflux. 00:22:05.95\00:22:07.32 It weakens that esophageal sphincter 00:22:07.35\00:22:09.60 and causes acid to come up in-- 00:22:09.63\00:22:11.35 That's a growing cancer of the stomach. 00:22:11.38\00:22:14.18 We want to decrease that by not having caffeine. 00:22:14.21\00:22:16.22 Yes, caffeine is a co-carcinogen, 00:22:16.25\00:22:18.45 meaning if you have other carcinogens around, 00:22:18.48\00:22:20.56 it's a lot easier for the carcinogen 00:22:20.59\00:22:24.67 to get into the genetic material. 00:22:24.70\00:22:26.31 Caffeine will augment that. 00:22:26.34\00:22:28.01 And so caffeine has been associated 00:22:28.04\00:22:29.47 with cancers of the pancreas as well as 00:22:29.50\00:22:32.78 cancers of the urinary bladder and esophagus. 00:22:32.81\00:22:36.47 So goodbye all those heavily or even partially 00:22:36.50\00:22:40.59 or even what about just tiny bit of caffeine? 00:22:40.62\00:22:43.80 Well, tiny bit of caffeine we would also recommend against. 00:22:43.83\00:22:48.40 It has addictive potential. 00:22:48.43\00:22:51.09 And also we would recommend 00:22:51.12\00:22:53.63 in the esophagus recommending against the decafs. 00:22:53.66\00:22:57.06 The decafs have tannins in it 00:22:57.09\00:22:58.64 that can do the same thing that the caffeine does. 00:22:58.67\00:23:00.70 Won't cause cancer of the pancreas or bladder 00:23:00.73\00:23:03.68 like the caffeine is associated with so it's a better step. 00:23:03.71\00:23:06.74 It would be better if you want to, you know, 00:23:06.77\00:23:09.01 simulate caffeine to use something 00:23:09.04\00:23:11.79 that is gonna be totally 00:23:11.82\00:23:13.19 non-carcinogenic like postum or aroma. 00:23:13.22\00:23:15.79 What about flesh foods, 00:23:15.82\00:23:17.19 meats those kind of things, are those carcinogenic? 00:23:17.22\00:23:19.44 They are. Okay. 00:23:19.47\00:23:20.84 Actually clear cut now through a number of studies 00:23:20.87\00:23:23.67 but Harvard University did a nice study on meat intake 00:23:23.70\00:23:27.83 and colon cancer and we have a graphic on that. 00:23:27.86\00:23:30.40 This study was done by Dr. Walter Willett 00:23:30.43\00:23:33.05 and notice those that were eating meat 00:23:33.08\00:23:35.41 just one time a month had a 39% increased risk of colon cancer. 00:23:35.44\00:23:40.00 Thirty nine percent of the colon 00:23:40.03\00:23:41.40 and that's number two cause of death in America you said. 00:23:41.43\00:23:43.26 Number two cause of cancer death. 00:23:43.29\00:23:45.21 Two to three times a week it increases to 50%. 00:23:45.24\00:23:48.85 And then five or six times a week, 84% increased risk. 00:23:48.88\00:23:54.01 And if you're eating meat on a daily basis, 00:23:54.04\00:23:56.27 you know, lot of people think they're doing good 00:23:56.30\00:23:57.99 'cause they don't eat meat maybe two meals a day 00:23:58.02\00:23:59.86 but they're gonna eat it that one meal, 00:23:59.89\00:24:01.80 149% increased risk of colon cancer. 00:24:01.83\00:24:05.20 Dr. Willett stated that there was no safe 00:24:05.23\00:24:07.64 level of meat intake as far as colon cancer is concerned 00:24:07.67\00:24:11.09 but he also stated the more often 00:24:11.12\00:24:12.83 it's consumed the higher the risk. 00:24:12.86\00:24:15.15 And this is any meat not just red meat? That's right. 00:24:15.18\00:24:17.63 His study was on red meat but then Loma Linda University 00:24:17.66\00:24:20.34 did a study two years later on white meat 00:24:20.37\00:24:22.97 and showed the same association. 00:24:23.00\00:24:25.06 Same number, same percentage? 00:24:25.09\00:24:26.46 Yeah, well, they were roughly the same 00:24:26.49\00:24:28.92 actually eating chicken just once a month 00:24:28.95\00:24:31.19 also dramatically increased. 00:24:31.22\00:24:32.59 There was more than 39%. 00:24:32.62\00:24:33.99 It was like 80% increased risk 00:24:34.02\00:24:35.51 if you eat chicken just one time a month. 00:24:35.54\00:24:37.53 Well, so doing this is just like heading into the traffic jam. 00:24:37.56\00:24:40.85 Heading into the traffic jam, absolutely. 00:24:40.88\00:24:43.10 It's like putting bull's eye in the side of your car. 00:24:43.13\00:24:45.50 And it would be bad enough if it just caused colon cancer. 00:24:45.53\00:24:48.49 But it also has been implicated in cancer of the breast 00:24:48.52\00:24:52.23 the more often its consumed, 00:24:52.26\00:24:54.03 lymphoma dramatically related to meat intake, 00:24:54.06\00:24:57.03 cancer of the esophagus, related to meat intake, 00:24:57.06\00:24:59.93 cancer of the pancreas related to meat intake, 00:24:59.96\00:25:02.89 cancer of the endometrium in women 00:25:02.92\00:25:05.90 and animal protein even dairy products 00:25:05.93\00:25:08.80 have been associated with cancer of the ovary. 00:25:08.83\00:25:11.67 This might seem like an obvious question. 00:25:11.70\00:25:13.07 But do you eat meat? I don't. 00:25:13.10\00:25:15.84 What about cancer of the prostate? 00:25:15.87\00:25:17.73 Cancer of the prostate also yes. Good point. 00:25:17.76\00:25:20.10 In fact, a number of studies 00:25:20.13\00:25:21.53 and that's one of the most well studied associations 00:25:21.56\00:25:24.23 between meat intake and animal fat intake. 00:25:24.26\00:25:28.37 In particular, it's the animal fat intake 00:25:28.40\00:25:30.15 whether it's from meat or from diary 00:25:30.18\00:25:32.78 that can help bring it about. 00:25:32.81\00:25:34.79 And some people have taken advantage 00:25:34.82\00:25:37.54 of that thing in New York City you know, 00:25:37.57\00:25:41.22 the PETA group, which we don't necessarily hardly endorse 00:25:41.25\00:25:44.80 but they had a milk mustache on Mayor Giuliani 00:25:44.83\00:25:47.60 and put "Got prostate cancer" on the billboard 00:25:47.63\00:25:51.61 and the City of New York removed 00:25:51.64\00:25:54.30 that billboard shortly afterwards but-- 00:25:54.33\00:25:56.21 Yeah, I'm sure they did. 00:25:56.24\00:25:57.61 What about fish? Fish can also do it. 00:25:57.64\00:26:00.41 In fact, fish is one 00:26:00.44\00:26:01.81 of the highest levels of pesticides. 00:26:01.84\00:26:03.36 And our last graphic has to do with fish. 00:26:03.39\00:26:06.76 Fish used to be a healthy food 100 years ago, 00:26:06.79\00:26:09.09 but with our modern society lake water 00:26:09.12\00:26:12.03 has 0.02 parts per million of DDD in it. 00:26:12.06\00:26:15.21 Phytoplankton living in the DDD contaminated water 00:26:15.24\00:26:17.63 five parts per million, the herbivorous fish 00:26:17.66\00:26:19.64 that eat the phytoplankton 40 to 300 parts per million, 00:26:19.67\00:26:22.95 and the carnivorous fish up to 2500 parts per million of DDD. 00:26:22.98\00:26:26.70 That's a very unsafe level. It can cause cancer. 00:26:26.73\00:26:29.71 It can also cause mental health problems. 00:26:29.74\00:26:31.87 And what we are finding is with mercury 00:26:31.90\00:26:34.33 and with other contaminates in the water, 00:26:34.36\00:26:37.38 it's concentrated up to 1,000 00:26:37.41\00:26:39.44 or million fold in the fat of fish. 00:26:39.47\00:26:41.52 Wow, so this-- water because it's polluted 00:26:41.55\00:26:45.48 and all the stuff, the fish is just no longer healthy to eat. 00:26:45.51\00:26:49.21 Right and so you really need to get-- 00:26:49.24\00:26:50.61 fish has some healthy things like Omega 3, 00:26:50.64\00:26:53.10 but it's better to get the Omega 3 from plant sources 00:26:53.13\00:26:55.30 where you don't have that biomagnifications. 00:26:55.33\00:26:57.72 We've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:26:57.75\00:26:59.93 Thank you so much by the way 00:26:59.96\00:27:01.33 for coming talking with us about cancer. 00:27:01.36\00:27:03.90 And thank you for what you're doing with your patients. 00:27:03.93\00:27:06.95 You know, it sounds like you do a lot 00:27:06.98\00:27:09.07 of education with your patients. 00:27:09.10\00:27:10.78 Yeah, it's very important you know, 00:27:10.81\00:27:12.88 we can clean up some of the messes there 00:27:12.91\00:27:15.17 but we can turn the faucet off, 00:27:15.20\00:27:17.15 only the patient can do that. 00:27:17.18\00:27:19.12 And you probably talked to that patient 00:27:19.15\00:27:20.53 about turning the faucet off quite often through education. 00:27:20.56\00:27:23.40 Don't you? Absolutely. 00:27:23.43\00:27:24.80 Now we can't avoid all carcinogens, 00:27:24.83\00:27:26.37 but we should look for the warning signs? 00:27:26.40\00:27:28.70 Well, and we should also try to avoid 00:27:28.73\00:27:30.74 as much of the carcinogens as we can, 00:27:30.77\00:27:32.53 the less the carcinogen load, the less the risk of cancer. 00:27:32.56\00:27:36.19 But that also underscores the importance 00:27:36.22\00:27:38.09 of boosting the immune system, 00:27:38.12\00:27:39.87 the second-pronged approach in preventing cancer. 00:27:39.90\00:27:42.78 We've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:27:42.81\00:27:44.57 Do not just dismiss this program. 00:27:44.60\00:27:47.20 Follow through on these warning signs, 00:27:47.23\00:27:48.96 get these screenings done. 00:27:48.99\00:27:50.80 Show this tape to your friends and relatives. 00:27:50.83\00:27:53.15 We want you to have health that lasts for a lifetime 00:27:53.18\00:27:55.25 but more than that have a relationship with God 00:27:55.28\00:27:58.05 and it can last for eternity. 00:27:58.08\00:28:00.00
