It's not the largest problem 00:01:05.60\00:01:08.94 in America, because many people are suffering from 00:01:08.97\00:01:11.49 diseases of over abundance but there are a few 00:01:11.52\00:01:14.72 that really struggle with this and joining us to talk 00:01:14.75\00:01:17.59 about this is the survivor of this very problem. 00:01:17.62\00:01:21.58 Survivor of anorexia, Jennifer Jill Schwirzer 00:01:21.61\00:01:26.44 and she has a webpage jenniferjill.org and 00:01:26.47\00:01:29.90 we're excited about the material that she is sharing 00:01:29.93\00:01:32.91 and about the book that you've written, 00:01:32.94\00:01:34.48 Dying To Be Beautiful. Excellent book, 00:01:34.51\00:01:37.61 you have put a lot of research into this and pulled 00:01:37.64\00:01:40.77 together a multidisciplinary team, a registered 00:01:40.80\00:01:44.98 dietitian and a psychologist and you've got some very 00:01:45.01\00:01:48.84 good reviews on this book and what I like about 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.63 it is that it comes from your own personal 00:01:51.66\00:01:53.81 perspective as well. Yeah I wove a lot of stories 00:01:53.84\00:01:57.58 in and out of the main text that was more 00:01:57.61\00:01:59.57 you know research, I've put ten stories of survivors 00:01:59.60\00:02:03.43 woven into the books so there is a lot of personal 00:02:03.46\00:02:06.53 interest and it reads well. And you've told me 00:02:06.56\00:02:10.04 that this is a problem for what percentage of people 00:02:10.07\00:02:13.56 in America? Well, we're looking at a lifetime 00:02:13.59\00:02:16.42 prevalence rate for anorexia of about 0.5%, 00:02:16.45\00:02:19.36 so that's not a large percent, bulimia is higher 1 to 3% 00:02:19.39\00:02:22.68 lifetime prevalence but that prevalence drastically 00:02:22.71\00:02:27.06 increases for a certain age population and a 00:02:27.09\00:02:30.22 certain gender. And that is young women, 00:02:30.25\00:02:32.04 women between the ages of 15 and 25. 00:02:32.07\00:02:34.14 And we've talked about how this came as result 00:02:34.17\00:02:37.69 of just a movement in people's minds from fat being 00:02:37.72\00:02:41.92 where was it was at so to speak in other words 00:02:41.95\00:02:43.94 that was a sign of affluence then the thin being 00:02:43.97\00:02:46.88 in and that wasn't always the case. Okay. 00:02:46.91\00:02:49.50 I mean when he looked at those pictures of the 00:02:49.53\00:02:50.52 Mona Lisa and others you see that hey there 00:02:50.55\00:02:54.14 has been a big shift in what people 00:02:54.17\00:02:55.38 think is beautiful. Right. 00:02:55.41\00:02:56.99 Social revolution, industrial revolution, 00:02:57.02\00:02:59.25 sexual revolution all those things factored in. 00:02:59.28\00:03:02.41 Until today our young women are beholding 00:03:02.44\00:03:05.33 this images of catwalk models and I specified before 00:03:05.36\00:03:09.92 that the thinness isn't in everywhere but 00:03:09.95\00:03:12.62 it's particularly in, in the fashion industry 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.87 and particularly the catwalk fashion industry 00:03:14.90\00:03:18.01 where these woman are showcased the new fashions 00:03:18.04\00:03:20.94 and they value very thin bodies because the clothes 00:03:20.97\00:03:24.97 simply hang on their bodies like they would on a coat 00:03:25.00\00:03:27.07 hanger so the focus is on the clothes and not 00:03:27.10\00:03:28.78 on the girl. And so the young women are seeing 00:03:28.81\00:03:31.73 these images and taking this in and that's what 00:03:31.76\00:03:33.88 they idealize and partly as a result of that eating 00:03:33.91\00:03:37.39 disorders are much more common among young women. 00:03:37.42\00:03:39.69 So, today we wanna kind of grapple with the causes 00:03:40.71\00:03:43.27 and affects of these eating disorders and you 00:03:43.30\00:03:45.47 wanna give us some definitions on eating disorders. 00:03:45.50\00:03:49.57 That's right I wanna define anorexia and bulimia 00:03:49.60\00:03:51.32 for you, according to the American Psychiatric 00:03:51.35\00:03:54.28 Associations diagnostic manual we're gonna look 00:03:54.31\00:03:56.60 at the criterion. First of anorexia, lets 00:03:56.63\00:03:58.95 look at the next graphic. These have been paraphrased 00:03:58.98\00:04:02.74 but if you get the point these are characteristics 00:04:02.77\00:04:05.95 of Anorexia Nervosa. A refusal to maintain body weight 00:04:05.98\00:04:10.15 of more than 85% of normal weight, 00:04:10.18\00:04:12.56 in other words you're 15% underweight or more. 00:04:12.59\00:04:14.81 Intense fear of becoming fat is a characteristic 00:04:14.84\00:04:19.07 of anorexia. Denial; obsession with body weight; 00:04:19.10\00:04:24.14 self-worth is tied unduly to weight. 00:04:24.17\00:04:29.27 And so as people are in denial of their condition 00:04:29.30\00:04:33.45 and not only that but they're very focused on 00:04:33.48\00:04:36.52 attaining this low weight and that it consumes 00:04:36.55\00:04:39.68 them and they define themselves in those terms. 00:04:39.71\00:04:42.06 Amenorrhea. Amenorrhea is the loss of 00:04:42.09\00:04:43.79 the monthly cycle that is a characteristic of Anorexia 00:04:43.82\00:04:47.43 Nervosa and that has to happen for 3 consecutive 00:04:47.46\00:04:50.21 months in order for them to qualify. 00:04:50.24\00:04:52.04 The diagnosis. That's right, 00:04:52.07\00:04:54.03 and so those for criterion are what constitute 00:04:54.06\00:04:57.14 a diagnosis, all of them have to be in place with 00:04:57.17\00:05:00.75 this cavia that there are two types of anorexia. 00:05:00.78\00:05:03.74 One is the binging purging type and the other 00:05:03.77\00:05:06.67 is the restricting type. The binging purging type 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.91 can some times be mistaken for bulimic because 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.92 they binge and purge. But, bulimics aren't 00:05:10.95\00:05:13.73 generally underweight. So, what does Nervosa mean. 00:05:13.76\00:05:19.95 You know what I don't know I was thinking about that, 00:05:19.98\00:05:21.78 I need to look that up, you caught me. 00:05:21.81\00:05:23.69 Okay anorexia. I think it has to do with 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.20 nerves, but I'm not sure I need to look that up, 00:05:26.23\00:05:29.75 anorexia means a loss of appetite which is not true 00:05:29.78\00:05:32.16 because anorexics obsess about food 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.44 they're always hungry, they're like 00:05:35.47\00:05:36.73 starvation victims, so it's a misnomer. 00:05:36.76\00:05:38.78 Okay, so what is the impact of anorexia on the body? 00:05:39.61\00:05:44.87 On the body, okay lets look at that, 00:05:44.90\00:05:46.31 everything in the body slows down and in a sense 00:05:46.34\00:05:50.89 it dries up. Okay, because you are not fueling 00:05:50.92\00:05:53.99 your body, you are not really hydrating your body 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.40 and so it's getting ratchet itself down into what 00:05:56.43\00:05:59.89 is basically survival mode. Blood pressure lowers, 00:05:59.92\00:06:03.16 pulse lowers, respiration slows down, digestion 00:06:03.19\00:06:07.69 slows down. People become constipated. 00:06:07.72\00:06:11.11 They become dehydrated; they are kind of like 00:06:11.14\00:06:13.08 a fish out of water. And all of this is an attempt 00:06:13.11\00:06:16.30 on the body's part to slow down to ratchet 00:06:16.33\00:06:19.65 everything down, because they are in conservation 00:06:19.68\00:06:21.95 mode. Okay, we're starving now and we need to slow 00:06:21.98\00:06:24.49 everything down just to get through this starvation 00:06:24.52\00:06:26.49 period until there is food available again that's what 00:06:26.52\00:06:28.66 the body is saying. Often there is a cold intolerance 00:06:28.69\00:06:31.93 that's because of very little body fat. 00:06:31.96\00:06:34.70 But it's also because of thyroid changes inability 00:06:34.73\00:06:37.30 of the body to keep itself warm. 00:06:37.33\00:06:38.96 There is very dry skin and hair, body doesn't wanna 00:06:38.99\00:06:42.18 waste any extra oil or any extra resources 00:06:42.21\00:06:45.58 on keeping the hair moist and the skin moist, 00:06:45.61\00:06:48.29 so that becomes dry. In severe cases you can develop 00:06:48.32\00:06:52.56 something called Lanugo, which is a fur that 00:06:52.59\00:06:55.71 develops on the body and it's in fact the bodies 00:06:55.74\00:06:58.59 last attempt stay warm. Hmm. 00:06:58.62\00:07:01.74 Kinda like when you have that one before 00:07:01.77\00:07:03.49 you're born in the womb. That's right, similar. 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.70 Estrogen drops and there is a lot of consequences 00:07:05.73\00:07:08.67 as a result of the dropping Estrogen. 00:07:08.70\00:07:10.21 One being that the lining of the uterus, 00:07:10.24\00:07:12.75 this is not shed every month as it is in the 00:07:12.78\00:07:14.71 monthly cycle. And that sets a women out for female 00:07:14.74\00:07:18.17 types of cancers. Another consequence of Estrogen 00:07:18.20\00:07:22.07 loss is osteoporosis, everybody knows about the 00:07:22.10\00:07:26.09 correlation between menopause and increased 00:07:26.12\00:07:28.52 incidents of osteoporosis because of a drop in 00:07:28.55\00:07:31.44 Estrogen. Estrogen is the bone building hormone. 00:07:31.47\00:07:33.75 So, if you take a woman who is in the formative 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.36 stage of life which young women are, 00:07:36.39\00:07:37.85 they are still building their bones and you take away 00:07:37.88\00:07:40.46 the Estrogen or a lot of the Estrogen, 00:07:40.49\00:07:43.43 they're gonna have osteoporosis. 00:07:43.46\00:07:46.58 In fact I have osteoporosis, I believe as a result of. 00:07:46.61\00:07:50.39 Of going thorough that. Yes, I do. Then there 00:07:50.42\00:07:53.23 is insomnia. The body is basically trying to wake you 00:07:53.26\00:07:55.93 up to get something to eat women have difficulty 00:07:55.96\00:07:58.48 or people have difficulty sleeping and there is 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.84 actual brain shrinkage. The brain is a physical organ 00:08:00.87\00:08:03.45 and we have to remember that the mind is housed 00:08:03.48\00:08:06.62 in a physical organ and so what often happens 00:08:06.65\00:08:09.72 with anorexics is they have to force feed them to bring 00:08:09.75\00:08:13.45 their nutrient levels up so that they will even 00:08:13.48\00:08:15.27 respond to counseling, or respond to any form of 00:08:15.30\00:08:18.38 mental therapy. Because they just won't respond because 00:08:18.41\00:08:21.46 their brain is in kind of a paralyzed state. 00:08:21.49\00:08:24.80 So your electrolytes probably go off too, 00:08:26.06\00:08:27.82 your potassium, magnesium all those different things? 00:08:27.85\00:08:30.33 That right and that's also a characteristic of bulimia 00:08:30.36\00:08:32.69 and let's look at the diagnostic criterion for bulimia. 00:08:32.72\00:08:35.56 Here on the next slide, this is again the 00:08:35.59\00:08:38.21 American Psychiatric Association's diagnostic manual 00:08:38.24\00:08:41.27 and here are the criterion for Bulimia Nervosa. 00:08:41.30\00:08:43.48 And we need to look up that Nervosa, 00:08:43.51\00:08:45.39 I should have known that. Recurrent binging, 00:08:45.42\00:08:47.83 eating extreme quantities and feeling out of control. 00:08:47.86\00:08:51.47 And then self-induced vomiting or some kind of 00:08:51.50\00:08:56.19 purging behavior using either vomiting. 00:08:56.22\00:08:59.32 Most often vomiting, but sometimes laxatives diuretics, 00:08:59.35\00:09:02.01 enemas, fasting or exercise. So, there is a binging 00:09:02.04\00:09:06.56 purging pattern. This must happen 2 times per week 00:09:06.59\00:09:10.10 for 3 months. And again self-worth is tied unduly 00:09:10.13\00:09:14.15 to weight. These people become obsessed 00:09:14.18\00:09:16.22 with this pursuit of the perfect body and with food 00:09:16.25\00:09:19.89 and that is becomes who they are and it can 00:09:19.92\00:09:22.68 be very challenging to try to talk to someone 00:09:22.71\00:09:25.08 in that condition. So, 2 to 3 times per week 00:09:25.11\00:09:27.88 for 3 months. I think that's what it said. 00:09:27.91\00:09:30.20 Yeah. Yeah, so. And so do you wanna look at the way 00:09:30.23\00:09:33.16 that bulimia impacts the body. 00:09:33.19\00:09:34.57 Yeah I wanna see, we looked at how anorexia 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.28 does that, what does bulimia do. 00:09:37.31\00:09:38.71 Okay, you mentioned a few moments ago about. 00:09:38.74\00:09:41.37 Electrolytes. Electrolyte imbalances, 00:09:41.40\00:09:43.97 there are heart irregularities that can come about 00:09:44.00\00:09:46.73 as a result of bulimia because of the throwing off 00:09:46.76\00:09:51.40 of the electrolytes. Potassium. 00:09:51.43\00:09:53.17 Particularly potassium and that can cause 00:09:53.20\00:09:55.84 something called malignant cardiac arrhythmia. 00:09:55.87\00:09:58.25 This is what Karen Carpenter, 00:09:58.28\00:10:00.50 the singer died of. Ironically she was in her closet 00:10:00.53\00:10:04.64 getting ready to go out and celebrate a recent 00:10:04.67\00:10:07.99 weight gain. I believe she was an anorexic 'cause 00:10:08.02\00:10:10.30 she was quite underweight, but she I believe a 00:10:10.33\00:10:12.75 binging, purging type of anorexic and she had 00:10:12.78\00:10:15.71 a potassium imbalance. That led to heart attack 00:10:15.74\00:10:19.19 and she dropped dead in her closet. 00:10:19.22\00:10:20.66 This is also what is believed to have happened to 00:10:20.69\00:10:24.31 Terri Schiavo. She had a binging, purging pattern 00:10:24.34\00:10:28.16 going and it was believed that she had a heart problem 00:10:28.19\00:10:31.60 because of that. Another consequence of bulimia 00:10:31.63\00:10:34.72 is over expansion of the stomach. 00:10:34.75\00:10:36.36 These people are eating huge quantities of food. 00:10:36.39\00:10:39.44 The largest quantity I've heard of is 50,000 calories. 00:10:39.47\00:10:44.39 50000 calories. And so the average intake 00:10:44.42\00:10:46.73 of calories is 2000, right, right around 2000 00:10:46.76\00:10:50.34 so that's how many types more that's like. 00:10:50.37\00:10:52.09 That like off the charts. Like 25 times more. Yeah. 00:10:52.12\00:10:55.92 So, it's huge. So we're talking huge quantities of food 00:10:55.95\00:10:59.80 binging and purging, 50,000 calories in a day's time, 00:10:59.83\00:11:03.14 many different binges. So, there is over expansion 00:11:03.17\00:11:06.90 of the stomach because of the contact of 00:11:06.93\00:11:09.91 stomach acid with the esophagus, it sets person 00:11:09.94\00:11:13.36 of first esophageal cancer, they can also develop 00:11:13.39\00:11:16.09 hoarseness. I met a girl in the course of my 00:11:16.12\00:11:18.21 research whose singing voice had been affected 00:11:18.24\00:11:21.81 by bulimia. And she was a singer and enjoyed singing 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.75 but she says my voice will never be the same. 00:11:24.78\00:11:26.68 The parotid glands for some reason they don't know 00:11:26.71\00:11:29.18 why but the parotid glands on the sides of the 00:11:29.21\00:11:31.30 neck swell in bulimia and the person develops 00:11:31.33\00:11:34.04 a chipmunk cheek appearance. So, that's a give away 00:11:34.07\00:11:36.80 sign sometimes. Soars on the backs of the finger 00:11:36.83\00:11:39.61 that's a result of putting the fingers down the throat, 00:11:39.64\00:11:41.60 the fingers push up against the teeth and often 00:11:41.63\00:11:44.80 bulimics will develop sores. And then tooth decay 00:11:44.83\00:11:48.29 as a result of the stomach acid coming in contact 00:11:48.32\00:11:51.01 with the teeth and wearing away the enamel. 00:11:51.04\00:11:53.45 Serious impact on the body. 00:11:53.48\00:11:55.93 Right, so for both anorexia and bulimia 00:11:55.96\00:11:58.88 you can see some tell-tell signs. 00:11:58.91\00:12:00.87 What about the psychological factors? 00:12:00.90\00:12:02.28 Okay, well let's talk about the causes; 00:12:02.31\00:12:05.18 I think the causes are multiple. I think we 00:12:05.21\00:12:10.61 have three basic categories 00:12:10.64\00:12:12.18 or I break it down into the three categories. 00:12:12.21\00:12:13.80 One is biological, things in people's genetic codes 00:12:13.83\00:12:19.35 so to speak and I'm gonna talk about that 00:12:19.38\00:12:20.97 for a moment. But, then there are psychological 00:12:21.00\00:12:23.12 factors, there are things that can set a person out 00:12:23.15\00:12:28.20 for developing an eating disorder. 00:12:28.23\00:12:29.75 That are in their family of origin, 00:12:29.78\00:12:31.97 that are in their individual psyche and then the third 00:12:32.00\00:12:35.21 factor is of course cultural factors 00:12:35.24\00:12:36.82 which we've been talking about. 00:12:36.85\00:12:38.06 Okay so what about the biological again, 00:12:38.09\00:12:42.15 we talked about what are those factors. 00:12:42.18\00:12:44.43 Okay, there is an association between particularly 00:12:44.46\00:12:48.16 bulimia and major affective disorder which affective 00:12:48.19\00:12:52.86 disorder has to do with the mood. 00:12:52.89\00:12:54.28 So, like bipolars is what we usually call that? 00:12:54.31\00:12:56.67 Well, it's not just bipolar major affective 00:12:56.70\00:12:58.50 disorder is kind of an over arching category 00:12:58.53\00:13:00.36 and under that category comes bipolar, 00:13:00.39\00:13:02.52 comes depressive disorder anything that affects 00:13:02.55\00:13:05.68 the mood or the emotions, effective means mood. 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.69 Okay. That means emotion, so there is an association 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.62 between particularly bulimia and major affective 00:13:11.65\00:13:14.80 disorder. In other words if the person has 00:13:14.83\00:13:16.37 major affective disorder in their family they are 00:13:16.40\00:13:19.10 gonna have a greater likelihood of developing 00:13:19.13\00:13:21.41 bulimia. And that's good news, because... 00:13:21.44\00:13:24.44 That can be treated. That's right, 00:13:24.47\00:13:25.57 and bulimia does respond to antidepressant use so. 00:13:25.60\00:13:30.07 And then psychological factors. 00:13:30.10\00:13:31.78 Okay, psychological factors when I say that I mean 00:13:31.81\00:13:34.46 specifically things in the individual or in their 00:13:34.49\00:13:37.93 past history or in their family of origin. 00:13:37.96\00:13:39.98 I am not talking about the psychological impact 00:13:40.01\00:13:42.56 of cultural factors. Okay. In fact I'm putting 00:13:42.59\00:13:44.36 in a separate category just for the sake of organizing 00:13:44.39\00:13:46.32 all the information. So, what I found in my study 00:13:46.35\00:13:49.31 was that there was a relationship; 00:13:49.34\00:13:51.38 there was a greater incidence of eating disorders 00:13:51.41\00:13:54.18 developed in women who had been the victims 00:13:54.21\00:13:56.93 of incest. It was much greater than the incidence 00:13:56.96\00:14:01.27 of eating disorders in women who had been 00:14:01.30\00:14:04.18 victims of abuse. Just abuse, somehow incest 00:14:04.21\00:14:08.24 is a greater invasion and I, in one study that 00:14:08.27\00:14:11.18 I read broke it down this way, it said that women develop 00:14:11.21\00:14:14.59 people develop their social skills in their family 00:14:14.62\00:14:18.30 of origin. If there is incest in a family it's a good 00:14:18.33\00:14:21.55 indication that the family relationships are so esque 00:14:21.58\00:14:25.02 that the family is not a good environment 00:14:25.05\00:14:28.10 for the development of social skills and as a result 00:14:28.13\00:14:30.23 they come into adulthood without social skills. 00:14:30.26\00:14:32.56 There is isolation from you know relationships 00:14:32.59\00:14:35.89 in general because they've never developed that ability 00:14:35.92\00:14:37.93 and as a result they set themselves up 00:14:37.96\00:14:40.25 for all kinds of addictions including eating disorders. 00:14:40.28\00:14:42.79 We're talking with Jennifer Schwirzer, 00:14:43.67\00:14:45.28 she has done a book on anorexia and bulimia 00:14:45.31\00:14:48.81 called 'Dying To Be Beautiful.' 00:14:48.84\00:14:50.32 We're gonna continue looking at the causes but 00:14:50.35\00:14:52.67 then also some good news about how we can find 00:14:52.70\00:14:55.61 help and hope when we come back. 00:14:55.64\00:14:57.60 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed 00:15:00.26\00:15:01.67 a few pounds, have you been on a diet for most 00:15:01.70\00:15:04.37 of your life, but not found anything that will really 00:15:04.40\00:15:06.91 keep the weight off, if you have answered yes 00:15:06.94\00:15:09.62 to any of these questions then we have a solution 00:15:09.65\00:15:12.01 for you that works Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:15:12.04\00:15:16.73 have written a marvelous book that's called Reversing 00:15:16.76\00:15:19.46 Obesity Naturally and we would like to send it to you 00:15:19.49\00:15:22.31 free of charge. And a lot of the information 00:16:04.14\00:16:06.82 that we have been covering you can access 00:16:06.85\00:16:08.94 on her website jenniferjill.org and how's 00:16:08.97\00:16:15.09 that spelled Jennifer, JENNIFER. 00:16:15.12\00:16:17.75 Traditional spelling jenniferjill.org 00:16:17.78\00:16:22.47 Okay, and they can find information about the book 00:16:22.50\00:16:25.29 which was published by Review and Herald, 00:16:25.32\00:16:27.39 excellent book. Did a lot of research, 00:16:27.42\00:16:29.53 fascinating to see some of the things you have 00:16:29.56\00:16:31.43 been saying about the factors, the biological factors, 00:16:31.46\00:16:34.59 you know I used to of course from time to time work 00:16:34.62\00:16:38.68 on a eating disorders unit and we saw a lot of people, 00:16:38.71\00:16:41.87 16 years old, 17 years old, people coming 00:16:41.90\00:16:45.23 with heart attacks all from this. 00:16:45.26\00:16:47.57 Significant problem then you also talked about the 00:16:47.60\00:16:50.26 psychological factors, you were describing the 00:16:50.29\00:16:53.41 connection between specifically incest 00:16:53.44\00:16:56.67 and an increase. That's right. 00:16:56.70\00:16:59.03 Level those that are struggling with 00:16:59.06\00:17:02.08 anorexia or bulimia, that's associated with 00:17:02.11\00:17:04.37 that because of the just invasion of the personal 00:17:04.40\00:17:08.16 privacy. What else about psychological factors. 00:17:08.19\00:17:10.26 Okay there are certain characteristics, 00:17:10.29\00:17:12.38 psychological characteristics that have been 00:17:12.41\00:17:14.37 identified in women with eating disorders 00:17:14.40\00:17:17.19 and they would be body dissatisfaction, 00:17:17.22\00:17:19.54 not surprisingly, they are not happy with their bodies. 00:17:19.57\00:17:21.78 We've dwelt pretty heavily on that previously. 00:17:21.81\00:17:25.38 Something called negative emotionality 00:17:25.41\00:17:28.09 which is just feeling bad. You know negative 00:17:28.12\00:17:30.99 emotions depression, anxiety, anger, 00:17:31.02\00:17:34.46 negative emotions, that's consistent among women 00:17:34.49\00:17:38.36 who and men who struggle with eating disorders 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.26 and then something called lack of 00:17:41.29\00:17:43.03 interoceptive awareness. 00:17:43.06\00:17:44.95 What's that mean, interoceptive? 00:17:44.98\00:17:46.87 And interoceptive awareness is the ability 00:17:46.90\00:17:49.45 to read what's going on inside of you. 00:17:49.48\00:17:52.62 Like I can sit here and talk to you and I can 00:17:52.65\00:17:55.16 tell you I'm a little nervous. 00:17:55.19\00:17:56.39 Or I can tell you I'm getting hungry. 00:17:56.42\00:17:58.32 But, they aren't in touch with their feelings. 00:17:58.35\00:17:59.75 They aren't in touch with their feelings 00:17:59.78\00:18:00.75 and are not able to articulate them and this is 00:18:00.76\00:18:02.73 consistently present among those that are prone 00:18:02.76\00:18:05.50 to develop eating disorders. 00:18:05.53\00:18:07.57 So, what are then are the cultural factors, 00:18:07.60\00:18:11.08 you talked about biological, psychological. 00:18:11.11\00:18:13.18 Are there cultural factors? 00:18:13.21\00:18:14.73 Well, the reason I keep coming back to this issue 00:18:14.76\00:18:16.71 is because that is the over arching causative 00:18:16.74\00:18:19.59 factor is what's going on in our culture today. 00:18:19.62\00:18:21.72 In relationship to the idealization of a very, 00:18:21.75\00:18:25.79 very thin ideal of beauty plus the pressure 00:18:25.82\00:18:29.02 that's on women to look a certain way 00:18:29.05\00:18:31.72 and to be beautiful and a combination of those 00:18:31.75\00:18:34.29 things creates a scenario where there is a much 00:18:34.32\00:18:38.06 higher rate of anorexia and bulimia in western 00:18:38.09\00:18:43.12 cultures or western influence cultures. 00:18:43.15\00:18:45.68 In fact eating disorders, these two types of eating 00:18:45.71\00:18:47.81 disorders are thought to be western culture bound. 00:18:47.84\00:18:50.60 Meaning that you just don't find them in cultures 00:18:50.63\00:18:54.11 that don't have the western influence. 00:18:54.14\00:18:56.03 And it's true that wherever western culture invades 00:18:56.06\00:18:59.07 or goes into a culture then you start seeing 00:18:59.10\00:19:01.24 a raise in eating disorders because the overarching 00:19:01.27\00:19:04.02 factor is there is a pressure to look a certain 00:19:04.05\00:19:08.32 way and this thin, ultra thin ideal of beauty. 00:19:08.35\00:19:11.42 Now the way it works is this. You have this 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.29 overarching factor, this pressure on everybody, 00:19:13.32\00:19:15.69 but not everybody reacts to it whether the individual 00:19:15.72\00:19:19.66 reacts in developing an eating disorder is based 00:19:19.69\00:19:23.34 on their individual... Biological, psychological. 00:19:23.37\00:19:26.18 And their individual psychology. 00:19:26.21\00:19:28.38 So, those with the weakness will develop an eating 00:19:28.41\00:19:31.02 disorders other will not. I think you have a 00:19:31.05\00:19:32.88 graphic that shows this changing shape of beauty. 00:19:32.91\00:19:35.59 Yeah. Okay, lets look at this, as the Weight 00:19:35.62\00:19:40.27 of Miss America Winners for instance and you can see 00:19:40.30\00:19:43.17 this in fashion magazines, you can see it in many 00:19:43.20\00:19:45.32 different forms but the Weight of Miss America Winners 00:19:45.35\00:19:47.53 has gone down consistently since 1950 00:19:47.56\00:19:50.22 to you know the year 2000, every year it's gone down, 00:19:50.25\00:19:54.54 but at the same time the weight of the average 00:19:54.57\00:19:57.58 woman has increased. And so again we come back 00:19:57.61\00:20:01.35 to the fat gap, the gap the between the ideal 00:20:01.38\00:20:04.03 and the real. Reality. 00:20:04.06\00:20:05.92 That's right. And this sets women up for continual 00:20:05.95\00:20:08.99 frustration with the way they look, 00:20:09.02\00:20:10.49 which is just a common nominator 00:20:10.52\00:20:13.31 among women today. But, there are few women 00:20:13.34\00:20:16.84 for whom that pressure becomes overwhelming 00:20:16.87\00:20:19.67 and they develop an eating disorder, 00:20:19.70\00:20:21.13 pathological dieting. Most women diet, 00:20:21.16\00:20:23.46 some become pathological in dieting and the dieting 00:20:23.49\00:20:26.72 takes on a life of its own. 00:20:26.75\00:20:27.92 So, this is really dangerous what you see on 00:20:27.95\00:20:30.35 the news stands, what you access in the media 00:20:30.38\00:20:33.53 can just really you don't know if its gonna 00:20:33.56\00:20:36.69 be your child or your wife or probably more of 00:20:36.72\00:20:40.84 your kids as they're growing up I mean 00:20:40.87\00:20:42.14 I have two young daughters and what you're 00:20:42.17\00:20:44.72 telling me just makes me underline in my mind 00:20:44.75\00:20:47.45 that I wanna be very specific about what they see; 00:20:47.48\00:20:52.38 the images they see or don't see and help them 00:20:52.41\00:20:55.13 you know recognize the difference between those. 00:20:55.16\00:20:59.05 You know another bigger factor probably 00:20:59.08\00:21:01.57 than anything they see on television or in magazines 00:21:01.60\00:21:04.91 is what they see in their own mother. 00:21:04.94\00:21:06.70 So you need to just encourage your wife 00:21:06.73\00:21:08.89 that she is beautiful, tell her whatever stage of life 00:21:08.92\00:21:11.99 she is at. You know you affirm her; 00:21:12.02\00:21:13.97 you love her for who she is as a total person 00:21:14.00\00:21:16.25 even Dobson says don't compliment 00:21:16.28\00:21:19.90 your teenage daughter by telling her she is pretty. 00:21:19.93\00:21:22.20 That's something that she had nothing to do with. 00:21:22.23\00:21:23.87 Compliment her on something that she developed 00:21:23.90\00:21:26.35 in herself or something that she had some control over 00:21:26.38\00:21:29.08 and so the more you do that for your wife, 00:21:29.11\00:21:31.25 the more your wife will be satisfied in who she is 00:21:31.28\00:21:33.61 and she won't be prone to scrutinize her appearance 00:21:33.64\00:21:36.82 and be overly idealistic about the way she looks 00:21:36.85\00:21:38.98 and then she will pass that contentment 00:21:39.01\00:21:41.02 on to her daughters, you know. 00:21:41.05\00:21:43.00 Well, honey I believe you're beautiful 00:21:43.03\00:21:44.86 for who you are. So, if you are watching 00:21:44.89\00:21:46.95 I believe that and also my daughter. 00:21:46.98\00:21:48.65 That's easier for you though because your wife 00:21:48.68\00:21:49.67 really is beautiful. So, what about a guy 00:21:49.70\00:21:52.07 who is you know. Yeah. Well, you know well, 00:21:52.10\00:21:54.78 you know that she is beautiful but you know 00:21:54.81\00:21:57.32 I was drawn to Luminitsa because of her mind, 00:21:57.35\00:22:00.11 her beauty was a bonus. 00:22:00.14\00:22:03.27 She is an architect right? 00:22:03.30\00:22:04.56 She is an architect but she just very interesting 00:22:04.59\00:22:07.48 analytical you know vivacious person so. 00:22:07.51\00:22:11.03 That's great. I was really drawn to her by that. 00:22:11.06\00:22:13.00 Now the cost of beauty you talk about. 00:22:13.03\00:22:15.34 Yeah, well you know we can see this beauty obsession 00:22:15.37\00:22:19.00 and this appearance obsession in women it 00:22:19.03\00:22:23.88 reflected in other areas. Okay. For instance the plastic 00:22:23.91\00:22:26.75 surgery industry. Lets look at the next graphic 00:22:26.78\00:22:29.78 here and we'll talk about what women are spending 00:22:29.81\00:22:31.64 to be beauty, I mean what do you see on television 00:22:31.67\00:22:33.43 anymore is makeover shows. 00:22:33.46\00:22:34.92 $9.4 billion. 2003, $9.4 billion 00:22:34.95\00:22:38.86 that's a 300% increase over 6 years. 00:22:38.89\00:22:42.79 Someone's getting rich there, probably the dermatologist. 00:22:42.82\00:22:44.62 That's right. Dieting ads, 2005, 00:22:44.65\00:22:47.45 Dieting aids, 2005, aids okay, $40 billion. 00:22:47.48\00:22:51.14 Cosmetics, 2005 over $20 billion. 00:22:51.17\00:22:56.80 Beauty is expensive, we're spending lots and lots 00:22:56.83\00:23:00.03 of money on it. We are not happy with who we are. 00:23:00.06\00:23:02.48 And people are taking advantage of that. 00:23:02.51\00:23:04.27 And they are taking advantage of that, 00:23:04.30\00:23:05.47 that's right. They create us a false reality 00:23:05.50\00:23:07.74 and then they take advantage of us, 00:23:07.77\00:23:09.06 I mean this is the American way, 00:23:09.09\00:23:10.32 and I think the core problem here is something 00:23:10.35\00:23:12.55 I like to call Looksism. Looksism. 00:23:12.58\00:23:15.20 So, I wanna look at the next graphic here, 00:23:15.23\00:23:16.47 okay what's that? The core problem is Looksism, 00:23:16.50\00:23:18.39 which is characterized by two main things. 00:23:18.42\00:23:22.15 One is an overemphasis on physical beauty. 00:23:22.18\00:23:24.52 You know lets not lie to ourselves, 00:23:24.55\00:23:27.10 physical attractiveness is important and we don't 00:23:27.13\00:23:30.04 wanna underemphasize it and pretend 00:23:30.07\00:23:32.20 that it doesn't matter at all because then we come 00:23:32.23\00:23:34.29 across like we don't care about ourselves. 00:23:34.32\00:23:35.75 So, we need to look as beast we can, 00:23:35.78\00:23:37.41 but there is an overemphasis on physical appearance 00:23:37.44\00:23:40.75 to the point where it becomes obsession as a result 00:23:40.78\00:23:44.47 of these influences I've been talking about, 00:23:44.50\00:23:46.30 the second characteristic of Looksism is a distorted 00:23:46.33\00:23:50.22 ideal of beauty, in other words we don't have 00:23:50.25\00:23:54.58 a normal concept anymore even of what beauty 00:23:54.61\00:23:57.31 is and you can see this throughout history 00:23:57.34\00:23:59.68 and it seems like women are always the victims of this. 00:23:59.71\00:24:02.51 There is this idea that comes in the culture 00:24:02.54\00:24:05.81 that a certain thing is beautiful and then women 00:24:05.84\00:24:09.21 peruse that idea in order to reach that standard 00:24:09.24\00:24:11.56 of beauty to their own harm. 00:24:11.59\00:24:13.60 Let's look at some examples. 00:24:13.63\00:24:14.79 Like high heels probably. 00:24:14.82\00:24:16.24 Well I'm gonna get to that, you've given away 00:24:16.27\00:24:18.06 my punch line. Lets look at your first graphic, 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.69 this a corset, now corset wearing is still active today 00:24:20.72\00:24:24.45 in a very small population, they will actually 00:24:24.48\00:24:27.10 have ribs taken out, we talked about this before 00:24:27.13\00:24:29.94 that the internal organs are compressed, 00:24:29.97\00:24:31.83 the smallest waist today is by a corset wearers is, 00:24:31.86\00:24:36.82 owned by a corset wearer name Cathie Jung, 00:24:36.85\00:24:38.95 who is 15 inches that the size of a jar of mayonnaise. 00:24:38.98\00:24:42.73 So, her liver is compressed everything else. 00:24:42.76\00:24:45.28 I don't know how the body can function but 00:24:45.31\00:24:47.15 apparently it's worth it to her, but this is, 00:24:47.18\00:24:49.13 this just gives you an idea of the kind of harm 00:24:49.16\00:24:51.26 women will subject themselves to. 00:24:51.29\00:24:52.89 Lets look at the next graphic here in Asian cultures, 00:24:52.92\00:24:57.13 foot binding was once popular, 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.29 it's now illegal because it's extremely harmful, 00:24:59.32\00:25:01.81 but the young female foot was broken and bound 00:25:01.84\00:25:05.08 for many years until it would fit into shoes 00:25:05.11\00:25:08.08 like these shoes. Oh man. 00:25:08.11\00:25:10.38 So, that they would have tiny, 00:25:10.41\00:25:11.38 because small feet are considered feminine 00:25:11.39\00:25:13.05 and so they would have these tiny feet and this very 00:25:13.08\00:25:15.68 mincing gate and then lets look at the next graphic here. 00:25:15.71\00:25:19.09 This is popular in some of the African countries. 00:25:20.86\00:25:23.38 Oh! the neck, the elongated neck. 00:25:23.41\00:25:24.38 The neck rings, they will add the rings gradually 00:25:24.39\00:25:26.60 to elongate the neck, Oh! Man. 00:25:26.63\00:25:29.07 Countries like Burma and other places, 00:25:29.10\00:25:30.56 the problem is that if you took those neck rings 00:25:30.59\00:25:33.03 out the women would die because she would not 00:25:33.06\00:25:35.30 be able to support the weight of her head. 00:25:35.33\00:25:38.19 Now you maybe thinking well we're so civilized 00:25:38.22\00:25:40.48 in the Western world, but we have our own version 00:25:40.51\00:25:43.67 of looksism in our own distorted ideal of beauty. 00:25:43.70\00:25:47.39 So, let's look in particular at evening wear, 00:25:47.42\00:25:50.86 let's look at the next graphic, lets think about what 00:25:50.89\00:25:53.13 men versus women wear in a typical formal night out. 00:25:53.16\00:25:56.84 The man is dressed in a suit. 00:25:56.87\00:25:58.25 Which is what he usually wears. 00:25:58.28\00:25:59.77 Which is what he usually, man are always 00:25:59.80\00:26:00.98 comfortable, have you ever notice that? 00:26:01.01\00:26:02.56 Are you uncomfortable right now? 00:26:02.59\00:26:04.03 I'm very probably too comfortable. 00:26:04.06\00:26:05.97 You are comfortable, so men are wearing 00:26:06.00\00:26:08.22 you know double layers sometimes in the cold night 00:26:08.25\00:26:10.67 there, lets look at that graphic again, 00:26:10.70\00:26:12.09 they're in flat shoes. But, this lady has high heels, 00:26:12.12\00:26:16.27 she is on this dressed, she is gonna trip down her hair. 00:26:16.30\00:26:18.68 She has high heels; she has long dress, 00:26:18.71\00:26:19.95 now she can trip, she is, her back, her chest, 00:26:19.98\00:26:22.39 her arms. Her shoulders are exposed to the 00:26:22.42\00:26:24.92 cold night air, she is wearing lots of makeup 00:26:24.95\00:26:26.74 and she spent hours on her hair and who know 00:26:26.77\00:26:29.00 what chemicals she has on her hair so. 00:26:29.03\00:26:30.60 Each one of them meet someone in the parking garage 00:26:30.63\00:26:32.79 who pulls out a switchblade, which one can defend 00:26:32.82\00:26:35.89 themselves, which one can run away, 00:26:35.92\00:26:37.35 you now what I'm saying. 00:26:37.38\00:26:38.80 Well if looks could kill, I don't know. 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.30 Yeah exactly, but they really can, but they can. 00:26:40.33\00:26:42.62 Yeah, right now they're just totally esque. 00:26:42.65\00:26:45.22 That's right and so consistently health, 00:26:45.25\00:26:46.56 let's look at the next graphic here is sacrificed 00:26:46.59\00:26:48.94 on the altar of beauty and that's been the case 00:26:48.97\00:26:51.50 throughout the ages and women are typically 00:26:51.53\00:26:54.07 the victims of that. So, the real thing you're saying 00:26:54.10\00:26:56.77 I mean there is biological, there is psychological, 00:26:56.80\00:26:58.77 but really it's the culture again that's toxic 00:26:58.80\00:27:01.59 and so you know and looking at these is 00:27:01.62\00:27:03.81 there help? Is there hope? How can we standup 00:27:03.84\00:27:05.76 against a really destructive culture. 00:27:05.79\00:27:08.66 There is help and there is hope, 00:27:08.69\00:27:10.60 I'm an example of that, I'm a survivor of anorexia 00:27:10.63\00:27:13.17 and a person can; a person can deal with it 00:27:13.20\00:27:16.52 and they can go on with their lives and develop 00:27:16.55\00:27:18.28 a healthy attitude.
