The following program presents principles designed 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.92 to promote good health and is not intended to take 00:00:03.95\00:00:06.54 the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:06.57\00:00:09.04 The opinions and ideas expressed are those of the 00:00:09.68\00:00:11.98 speaker. Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.84 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:14.87\00:00:17.22 Welcome to Health For A Lifetime, 00:00:50.33\00:00:51.53 I'm your host Don Mackintosh. 00:00:51.56\00:00:52.86 We're glad that you joined us today. 00:00:52.89\00:00:54.40 And today, we are gonna be talking 00:00:54.43\00:00:56.22 with Dr. George Guthrie. 00:00:56.25\00:00:58.18 Dr. Guthrie is from Southern Oklahoma, 00:00:58.61\00:01:00.74 where he serves as the medical director 00:01:00.77\00:01:03.61 for the Lifestyle Center of America. 00:01:03.94\00:01:06.28 Lifestyle Center of America treats 00:01:06.78\00:01:08.23 all kinds of different lifestyle diseases. 00:01:08.26\00:01:11.75 That's very true Don, we like to optimize people's 00:01:11.78\00:01:15.97 lifestyle so as to minimize their disease 00:01:16.00\00:01:18.88 and minimize their dependence on medication. 00:01:18.91\00:01:21.82 You put them in control, not the doctor. 00:01:21.85\00:01:24.54 That's what we are trying to do, educate them, 00:01:24.78\00:01:27.04 teach them how it works and then share with them 00:01:27.07\00:01:30.45 their responsibility and encourage them to do it. 00:01:30.48\00:01:32.86 And you know that's refreshing for me to talk 00:01:33.35\00:01:35.10 to someone like you because and I don't mean 00:01:35.13\00:01:37.35 to stereotype, but you know someone that has 00:01:37.38\00:01:40.63 your training you of course had done over 20 years 00:01:40.66\00:01:44.64 as a medical practice, you taught in the school 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.73 of health. You know, you know, we can go through 00:01:47.76\00:01:51.39 the alphabets too, we have a lot of different letters, 00:01:51.42\00:01:53.88 but you could be really focusing on something 00:01:53.91\00:01:56.68 that's more monetarily driving, driven, but this is, 00:01:56.71\00:02:00.69 this is the service that's taking all that information 00:02:01.34\00:02:03.98 and trying to put someone else in the driver seat 00:02:04.01\00:02:05.75 and I, I appreciate it, it's back to the basics I was 00:02:05.78\00:02:08.84 actually thought as most doctors are in their training. 00:02:08.87\00:02:11.59 A non-drug therapy comes first, I think many doctors 00:02:12.47\00:02:15.87 get discouraged because the patient comes in 00:02:15.90\00:02:17.79 and says I want a pill usually. 00:02:17.82\00:02:20.24 And today we are gonna be talking about something 00:02:20.27\00:02:22.08 that's, that you can't buy over-the-counter, 00:02:22.11\00:02:24.50 I guess. That's right. 00:02:25.23\00:02:26.31 And talk about something that, that actually goes 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.98 away from taking anything over-the-counter. 00:02:30.01\00:02:32.14 I guess that's right. 00:02:32.17\00:02:33.14 And this is the subject of fasting. 00:02:33.15\00:02:34.36 And fasting and its medical benefits 00:02:35.53\00:02:39.20 and maybe some dangers as well. Sure. 00:02:39.23\00:02:41.29 But what exactly is fasting. I know you look 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.92 at this from a, from different perspectives. 00:02:44.95\00:02:47.39 Yeah, well I often ask people what do you 00:02:47.42\00:02:50.34 think of when you here the word fasting. 00:02:50.37\00:02:53.81 Ah! Ah! Try it. Do you think well, 00:02:53.84\00:02:56.41 I think I'm gonna have to deprive myself for a longtime. 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.98 Deprivation of some kind sure, other people think of a 00:02:59.01\00:03:03.06 religious experience, like we went and we fasted. 00:03:03.09\00:03:06.79 Like Muslims 40 days and night. 00:03:06.82\00:03:08.83 Fasting and pray or the Muslims have their Ramadan 00:03:08.86\00:03:10.56 sort of a thing, where they don't eat during the day, 00:03:10.59\00:03:13.02 but then they eat at night. I hear things like fruit 00:03:13.05\00:03:17.10 fast for example and that would mean, 00:03:17.13\00:03:19.63 what would that mean. 00:03:19.66\00:03:20.63 Just no fruit or fasting, only fruit, just have 00:03:20.64\00:03:24.25 fruit or just fruit juice or breakfast. 00:03:24.28\00:03:27.13 Well, yeah, that's a little different one. Okay. 00:03:28.14\00:03:30.64 Or like entertainment fasting like no Television, 00:03:30.67\00:03:34.28 I heard that. Okay, so, so some sort of lent. 00:03:34.31\00:03:37.81 Lent okay, abstaining from something. Okay. 00:03:38.29\00:03:41.23 Another word that often comes up is cleansing or 00:03:41.26\00:03:44.13 purification, but as I talk about fasting 00:03:44.16\00:03:47.68 I would like to talk at not from those that perspective 00:03:47.71\00:03:50.91 at all, but from the perspective of physiologist, 00:03:50.94\00:03:54.12 well. A medical perspective. 00:03:54.15\00:03:55.93 A medical perspective from, medical perspective from a 00:03:55.96\00:03:59.57 perspective of physiology what is it mean to reach 00:03:59.60\00:04:02.72 the fasting state. What is the fasting state? 00:04:02.75\00:04:05.06 May be some of us have never reached that 00:04:05.09\00:04:06.99 before in America since we have so much obesity, 00:04:07.02\00:04:09.37 it could very well be. I think you right, 00:04:09.40\00:04:11.43 isn't that a fact. So, what is medically speaking. 00:04:11.46\00:04:14.08 Normally, the energy that we use goes into our mouth 00:04:15.00\00:04:19.25 into our stomachs, when our body is taking it from the 00:04:19.28\00:04:21.82 stomach or the intestines and using its energy 00:04:21.85\00:04:24.15 that's kind of the normal feeding state. 00:04:25.21\00:04:27.37 The opposite of that now is when there is no food 00:04:27.77\00:04:31.24 in the intestines supplying energy and the body has to 00:04:31.27\00:04:34.91 begin to bring energy in from storage. 00:04:35.51\00:04:38.65 So, the fasting state is really a change in the 00:04:39.61\00:04:42.34 hormone milieu in the body to have energy 00:04:42.37\00:04:45.83 come from storage rather than from the intestines. 00:04:46.02\00:04:49.04 So, when your stomach is empty and your colon is empty 00:04:49.31\00:04:53.16 and whole elementary canal, canal is empty 00:04:53.19\00:04:56.12 when that gets empty you move from being, 00:04:56.70\00:04:58.57 I don't know that we can say empty. 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.27 Don't, but at least the calories are taken 00:05:00.30\00:05:02.20 out and just the waste is left. 00:05:02.23\00:05:03.91 Now how long does it take to get to that state, 00:05:04.22\00:05:06.84 since none of us have never experienced it, 00:05:06.87\00:05:08.61 so many of us have not. The average and it depends 00:05:09.30\00:05:12.63 on the meal about 6-8 hours. A fatty meal, 00:05:12.66\00:05:16.20 the heavy meal will take longer and a shorter meal 00:05:16.47\00:05:19.55 for example if you made quotes meal of an apple, 00:05:19.58\00:05:22.47 it would be a shorter time then eight hours. Umm! Umm! 00:05:22.71\00:05:25.62 That's generally the timeframe 00:05:25.65\00:05:27.94 we look at 8-12 hours. So, is this good or is this bad, 00:05:27.97\00:05:31.60 the fasting state. Well, that's an excellent question, 00:05:32.27\00:05:35.65 I suppose it depends on where you are when you 00:05:35.68\00:05:38.10 are fasting. If I were, let's say in a prison war 00:05:38.13\00:05:42.63 camp somewhere and I was wasting away this fasting 00:05:42.66\00:05:43.63 state would not be a very good thing 00:05:47.68\00:05:49.14 because I would be eating myself up not only does the 00:05:49.56\00:05:52.02 body take energy out of storage 00:05:52.05\00:05:53.91 as in fat out of storage, but it will actually begin 00:05:53.94\00:05:57.00 to eat up muscle that would be a bad thing. 00:05:57.03\00:05:59.04 Okay. But if I happened to be an overweight American, 00:05:59.07\00:06:02.44 umm! umm!, that I would like to lose some weight to get 00:06:02.47\00:06:05.01 rid of some disease that maybe is made worse by 00:06:05.04\00:06:07.35 the way from joint pain, the diabetes, the hypertension, 00:06:07.38\00:06:10.38 the heart disease whatever it maybe 00:06:10.41\00:06:11.88 and maybe that fasting state is not as much of an enemy, 00:06:11.91\00:06:15.72 as I thought it was. It's interesting, 00:06:15.75\00:06:19.02 you know, I was reading the history once about those 00:06:19.05\00:06:21.01 concentration camps and it was during that time that 00:06:21.04\00:06:24.01 they started to understand that some of our western 00:06:24.04\00:06:26.17 diseases could be reversed. Yes, yes. 00:06:26.20\00:06:29.46 So, I guess in the Lowlands and Belgium 00:06:29.49\00:06:32.17 and all this different places when they, 00:06:32.20\00:06:33.99 when the enemy came through and took all 00:06:34.72\00:06:36.67 the fruit stores everybody went from feasting to fasting 00:06:36.70\00:06:40.80 and that's when they figured out. 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.12 Diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity 00:06:42.15\00:06:45.06 is kind of fade way when there is not 00:06:46.01\00:06:48.93 enough energy to go around. 00:06:48.96\00:06:50.63 So, you, you would even really may be know as much 00:06:50.66\00:06:53.37 as you do or there at the Lifestyle centre if there 00:06:53.40\00:06:56.13 had been like a fast it came because of the war. 00:06:56.16\00:06:59.40 Now we are, we are not recommending war. 00:06:59.43\00:07:01.26 No, we are recommending war and, 00:07:01.29\00:07:03.26 but we learned a lot from it. 00:07:03.29\00:07:04.26 And you right, much of the research on fasting actually 00:07:04.27\00:07:08.10 started around that time, well that too. 00:07:08.13\00:07:10.89 So, you know what are the benefits. 00:07:10.92\00:07:14.79 Let's say we are one of those few that, 00:07:14.82\00:07:17.68 well many in America that probably could 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.44 benefit little fasting. What are the benefits that 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.97 you would suggest for us? Several months ago I did a 00:07:24.00\00:07:28.35 literature search to try to and assure it I can find in 00:07:28.38\00:07:30.36 literature that would give me some idea and I found 00:07:30.39\00:07:33.04 some other interesting things a fasting maybe beneficial 00:07:33.07\00:07:36.62 for helping the the body to fight bacterial infections, 00:07:36.65\00:07:40.17 a may be decrease rheumatoid arthritis that is how treat, 00:07:41.71\00:07:46.93 rheumatoid arthritis. Increase the melatonin in 00:07:46.96\00:07:51.59 the body; may be help hypertension and even 00:07:51.62\00:07:55.80 improve in some resistance that is type 2 diabetes. 00:07:55.83\00:07:59.61 That's quite mouthful you went through that, but let's 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.80 go back and take one of the time, what about your 00:08:01.83\00:08:04.65 saying it decreases the possibility for infection. 00:08:04.68\00:08:09.39 How is that work? Well, your body's ability to 00:08:10.44\00:08:12.72 fight infections is actually better when your are in the 00:08:12.75\00:08:16.45 fasting state if it's a bacterial infection the same 00:08:16.48\00:08:19.06 is not true of a viral infection. 00:08:19.09\00:08:22.27 So, if you have a virus you need to eat, if you have a 00:08:22.30\00:08:24.24 bacteria you don't need eat. Well, that you know, 00:08:24.27\00:08:26.76 the old wise tale, now we heard for years is there is 00:08:27.32\00:08:29.39 something like starve the fever free to call right and 00:08:29.86\00:08:33.11 either some scientific bases for that old line. 00:08:33.14\00:08:36.39 So, if you have a bacterial infection it's really best to 00:08:36.42\00:08:39.13 kind of knock off eating. It's most people actually 00:08:39.16\00:08:43.56 loss their appetite and maybe the body itself 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.14 saying that's better, the fight blood cells as they are 00:08:46.17\00:08:48.67 fighting in a bacterial infection will release little 00:08:48.70\00:08:51.89 messengers, chemical messenger that would make 00:08:53.80\00:08:56.96 somebody not want t to eat, so they generally loss their 00:08:56.99\00:08:58.88 appetite and its reasonable when they were fighting a 00:08:58.91\00:09:01.62 bacterial infection to decrease the food we take in. 00:09:01.65\00:09:04.66 Fasting state maybe helpful. 00:09:04.69\00:09:06.06 And than Rheumatoid arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis 00:09:06.50\00:09:10.26 that's a mouthful yeah, how does that work? 00:09:10.29\00:09:12.48 Rheumatoid arthritis is a autoimmune disease that is 00:09:12.51\00:09:16.80 the body gets immune gets confused, the immune 00:09:17.41\00:09:21.37 system has two sides one side of it says go get it and 00:09:21.40\00:09:25.02 the other side says oh! no you don't. 00:09:25.05\00:09:26.86 Okay, And, and if that gets out of balance let say a 00:09:26.89\00:09:30.99 little weak on the oh! no you don't side the body 00:09:31.02\00:09:33.86 is immune system may go out and begin to fight itself, 00:09:34.32\00:09:37.39 if its fighting itself as in joints. 00:09:37.42\00:09:40.18 We call it Rheumatoid arthritis and there are some 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.13 reports in the medical literature of people having 00:09:43.16\00:09:46.50 improvements in the Rheumatoid arthritis from 00:09:46.53\00:09:48.60 fasting up to and generally atleast the one side scene 00:09:48.63\00:09:52.59 or what about 10, 12, 14 days rather long period of 00:09:52.62\00:09:56.46 time with just water and apparently his immune system 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.81 comes back and balance. It's not something I have 00:09:59.84\00:10:02.67 error recommended for anybody but it is something 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.29 I found in the literature, I certainly wouldn't 00:10:05.32\00:10:06.89 do it at home. I think you need a doctor supervision 00:10:06.92\00:10:10.08 for that because there are some significant problems 00:10:10.11\00:10:12.81 we will talk about those little later. 00:10:12.84\00:10:14.43 Do you fasting as the part of work you do at the 00:10:14.46\00:10:16.99 Lifestyle centre. Yes we do, I use a little bit of that. 00:10:17.02\00:10:20.32 We will talk a little more about that, 00:10:20.35\00:10:21.80 yes, yes lets do that So, we have a fighting 00:10:21.83\00:10:23.90 bacteria, we have sometimes as a treatment 00:10:23.93\00:10:27.24 for rheumatoid arthritis and then the third one you 00:10:27.27\00:10:32.69 mentioned was melatonin. What is melatonin? 00:10:32.72\00:10:35.05 What disease? Well, when people think melatonin 00:10:35.08\00:10:37.60 they think sleep right. Many times they will. 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.57 And many people when they are not able to sleep 00:10:40.60\00:10:43.08 will take a melatonin supplement, okay. 00:10:43.11\00:10:46.10 Well, melatonin is made in the brain by a little 00:10:46.33\00:10:49.03 gland called pineal gland, Pine cone, yeah, 00:10:49.06\00:10:51.92 okay, pine cone, to help the brain sleep, melatonin 00:10:51.95\00:10:56.21 is a rest and rejuvenation hormone. A lot of folks 00:10:56.24\00:11:00.55 don't know that when your in the fasting state. 00:11:00.58\00:11:03.27 Your intestinal lining will actually make a 00:11:04.06\00:11:07.57 comparatively larger amount of melatonin 00:11:07.60\00:11:12.78 I have noticed myself when I am fasting as I eat that I 00:11:14.37\00:11:18.13 sleep better and I have heard the same from many 00:11:18.16\00:11:20.61 others who are trying to do the same thing. 00:11:20.64\00:11:22.17 So, fasting increases melatonin in the body and 00:11:22.35\00:11:26.58 may actually help with the healing and rejuvenation 00:11:26.61\00:11:29.95 and of course the sleep. Well, I heard that if you eat 00:11:29.98\00:11:32.77 something late at night that cuts down the melatonin 00:11:32.80\00:11:35.09 production too, What's I guess would go fasting at 00:11:35.12\00:11:38.20 night if it called breakfast. Yeah that's right. 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.80 Okay, melatonin, rheumatoid arthritis, fighting infections 00:11:40.83\00:11:46.49 but than you had another, what is the next one? 00:11:46.52\00:11:48.17 Hypertension. Okay hypertension. High blood 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.29 pressure, some interesting work reporting that people 00:11:50.32\00:11:54.44 with high blood pressure who fasted for 10 to 11 00:11:54.47\00:11:59.90 days, 90 percent of them were able to lower their 00:11:59.93\00:12:04.09 blood pressure down into the normal range, significant 00:12:04.12\00:12:08.38 drops, it's a rather, how do they work? 00:12:08.41\00:12:12.33 Interesting concept, well I don't that we understand 00:12:12.36\00:12:14.54 exactly how it works, I have got some ideas as far 00:12:14.57\00:12:16.99 as how physiology might go together but the study 00:12:17.02\00:12:19.88 was, that I have reviewed did not tell us how that 00:12:19.91\00:12:26.51 happens it simply reported that it does happen. 00:12:26.54\00:12:28.88 So, fasting can help bring that blood down and 00:12:29.84\00:12:32.49 I guess, that every point is brought down it is very 00:12:32.52\00:12:36.38 significant and then you can really a reduction in 00:12:36.41\00:12:39.71 lot of problems that hypertension causes. 00:12:39.74\00:12:41.57 Right, now closely tight to hypertension is another 00:12:41.60\00:12:44.42 disease. Diabetes, diabetes okay, the diabetes, 00:12:44.45\00:12:48.62 hypertension, heart disease and these are all kind of 00:12:48.65\00:12:51.68 tied together now in our understanding 00:12:51.71\00:12:54.23 along with obesity. My uncle, uncle Al, okay Al 00:12:54.26\00:13:01.04 was a eye specialist, your dad's brother 00:13:01.07\00:13:04.53 your mom's brother? My dad's sisters husband okay, 00:13:04.56\00:13:08.95 okay, uncle Al we just love uncle Al one day he went 00:13:08.98\00:13:13.70 out and got in Aeroplane crash and died. 00:13:13.73\00:13:15.86 So, he has all these medical books and when I go to 00:13:15.89\00:13:18.88 medical school the family says why don't you take it? 00:13:18.91\00:13:21.86 Well, it ends that uncle Al was a collector of 00:13:22.34\00:13:25.23 old medical books, at least a few, he had a couple of 00:13:25.26\00:13:27.96 them that I had really enjoyed kind of kept 00:13:27.99\00:13:30.71 one of the them was battle field surgery. 00:13:30.74\00:13:34.56 You know world war 1, okay this gonna be 00:13:34.59\00:13:36.99 interesting and the other one good for medical, 00:13:37.02\00:13:39.09 was entitled the starvation treatment of diabetes. 00:13:39.12\00:13:43.43 It's publication date was 1915, 1915 that's a long, 00:13:44.33\00:13:49.46 I don't know I think they knew what diabetes was 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.40 then, did they? They all know what diabetes was, 00:13:51.43\00:13:53.54 and they may have been diagnosing diabetes by 00:13:53.57\00:13:56.01 tasting urine to see it if it was sweet but they knew it 00:13:56.04\00:13:58.70 was a high sugar problem. Well, that sounds like, but 00:13:58.73\00:14:01.42 there was no such thing, it's insulin in those days that 00:14:01.45\00:14:03.71 wasn't until what 1921, 1923 that Banting and Best 00:14:03.74\00:14:08.09 discovered insulin. So, in those days the most 00:14:08.12\00:14:11.74 effective treatment of diabetes was this they 00:14:11.77\00:14:19.31 called a starvation treatment and starvation 00:14:19.34\00:14:22.16 sounds a lot like the fasting state physiologically. Yes. 00:14:22.19\00:14:25.57 That's right. And it's a very interesting kind of 00:14:25.60\00:14:28.99 description, you know, it was first with one 00:14:29.02\00:14:31.71 of the believe embed, then we said well let them go 00:14:31.74\00:14:36.42 ahead and walk around is like I will do better when 00:14:36.45\00:14:40.32 they exercise and they starved until their blood 00:14:40.35\00:14:43.26 sugar and the sugar in the urine which is normal and 00:14:43.29\00:14:46.41 it goes away. Now tell me that was an interesting 00:14:46.44\00:14:49.50 concept you see in those days they didn't even know 00:14:49.53\00:14:52.07 there is type 1, and type 2, diabetes. They thought 00:14:52.10\00:14:54.26 there were the same thing its high sugar for those who 00:14:54.29\00:14:57.56 had type 1 diabetes where the pancreas is dead, 00:14:57.59\00:15:00.03 there is no insulin while finding insulin was the cure 00:15:00.06\00:15:04.82 and their people live today because of that insulin 00:15:04.85\00:15:08.29 discovery but type 2 diabetes which we now 00:15:08.32\00:15:11.28 understand has a problem where high insulin levels to 00:15:11.31\00:15:14.69 start with. We have discovered that not only 00:15:14.72\00:15:17.77 high blood sugar problem but high insulin is also part 00:15:18.41\00:15:21.95 of the problem. Now kind of coming full circle, 00:15:21.98\00:15:25.69 it's reasonable to come back to this fasting business 00:15:26.40\00:15:29.29 or starvation as they called in harbor and they say is this 00:15:29.32\00:15:32.44 dealing with lowering insulin and it sure looks 00:15:32.47\00:15:35.55 like it is and our experience had 00:15:35.58\00:15:37.41 Lifestyle Center of America. We will place people on a 00:15:37.44\00:15:40.77 relative short fast about three days with water and 00:15:41.94\00:15:46.34 than watch that insulin resistance improve. 00:15:46.37\00:15:49.91 So, this is a old but now new treatment for diabetes 00:15:51.28\00:15:55.86 fasting. Guthrie, we are being talking about 00:17:12.04\00:17:13.98 fasting and the benefits of fasting and I will just 00:17:14.01\00:17:18.26 review that list with you in our graphic we will look it 00:17:18.29\00:17:21.72 here we have some benefits Dr. Guthrie, fighting 00:17:21.75\00:17:24.03 bacterial infections we talked about that, 00:17:24.06\00:17:26.37 increasing melatonin from the GI tracks we give that 00:17:26.40\00:17:29.51 sense of rejuvenation and rest, decreasing rheumatoid 00:17:29.54\00:17:33.20 arthritis which was fascinating decreasing 00:17:33.23\00:17:36.16 blood pressure and Reversing insulin Resistance 00:17:36.19\00:17:40.26 is at a good list. Sure right, its obviously not 00:17:40.29\00:17:42.93 exhaustive but it's some of the things we found that 00:17:42.96\00:17:45.72 maybe benefited from these fasting state and you said 00:17:45.75\00:17:49.04 you know you practice at the Lifestyle Centre of America 00:17:49.07\00:17:51.81 in Southern Oklahoma and there your will bread and 00:17:51.84\00:17:56.09 butter sort speak well what you known for, you treat all 00:17:56.12\00:17:59.89 of different types of things but I think when people 00:17:59.92\00:18:02.60 think about diabetes and they think about where to 00:18:02.63\00:18:05.14 get treated from a lifestyle perspective many times, 00:18:05.17\00:18:07.68 Lifestyle Center in America is number one on that. 00:18:08.72\00:18:10.48 And so you use actually you said two or three days 00:18:12.26\00:18:15.21 fast you watch the sugar has come down and then 00:18:15.24\00:18:19.02 you also said that the insulin resistance gets 00:18:19.05\00:18:23.36 better what is that mean insulin resistance and what 00:18:23.39\00:18:25.40 you mean by improving it? Insulin has a job of going to 00:18:25.43\00:18:29.72 the cells and saying open up and let the energy in 00:18:29.75\00:18:32.63 when the cells are insulin resistant they are saying 00:18:33.41\00:18:36.76 when the insulin comes no. No thank you or even 00:18:36.79\00:18:39.91 absolutely not, I don't want any of that stuff, now if you 00:18:39.94\00:18:42.72 have got some muscles example the thigh muscles 00:18:42.75\00:18:45.36 that are to use to working when they been seating 00:18:45.86\00:18:47.40 round doing nothing for a long time they, they have 00:18:47.43\00:18:51.45 got this insulin resistance, they, they all the foods 00:18:51.48\00:18:55.22 come in, they don't need it, so they are saying 00:18:55.25\00:18:57.27 no thank you. If you take the food away than have 00:18:57.30\00:18:59.96 them moving around the muscle has work to do 00:18:59.99\00:19:02.96 it gets hungry and that turns that 00:19:03.24\00:19:05.60 insulin resistance around. Generally, it arrives at the 00:19:05.63\00:19:07.56 short period of time that helps to decrease the need 00:19:07.59\00:19:11.27 for medications for example. Fascinating so your uncle Al 00:19:11.30\00:19:14.68 was on the something with that old book. 00:19:14.71\00:19:16.31 Hey let's look than, we looked at the benefits but 00:19:16.97\00:19:19.20 are their dangers to fasting and I think you want to talk 00:19:19.23\00:19:22.58 with us a little bit about that. Yes, I, we are afraid 00:19:22.61\00:19:26.85 of how people go long time fasting we really 00:19:26.88\00:19:29.67 start and this is the major problem with time when 00:19:29.70\00:19:32.54 we are not food and we lead it to earlier your 00:19:32.57\00:19:35.51 body starts to eat up muscle and it go actually 00:19:35.54\00:19:39.23 eat up not just skeletal muscle but your heart 00:19:39.26\00:19:41.83 muscle. If you are in the fasting state. So, little bit 00:19:41.86\00:19:45.31 good and lot can be bad, yes it is a matter effect 00:19:45.34\00:19:49.08 there is a greatest amount of muscle loss is often 00:19:49.50\00:19:52.57 early in the fast and the second or third 00:19:53.22\00:19:56.76 day, the first day is not a such a problem and then 00:19:56.79\00:19:59.10 your body goes into the kind of this safety mode 00:19:59.13\00:20:02.99 where it trying to protect and you don't tend to loss 00:20:03.02\00:20:05.58 as much muscle after those second and third 00:20:05.61\00:20:08.23 day but those first two days can really be 00:20:08.26\00:20:10.70 dilemma. So, you have some most of here some 00:20:10.73\00:20:13.46 what would you call them minerals that you loss 00:20:13.70\00:20:16.40 when you go on a fast. Yes in, don't try this at 00:20:16.43\00:20:19.40 home, okay, that sort of thing. Because when 00:20:19.43\00:20:22.25 your fasting not only do you have the possibility 00:20:22.28\00:20:25.28 of losing muscle but you also likely to be low in 00:20:25.31\00:20:30.93 things like magnesium or potassium and if people 00:20:30.96\00:20:35.02 are drinking a lot of water when they are fasting 00:20:35.05\00:20:38.00 they may actually deluge down the sodium, these 00:20:38.29\00:20:41.02 are the three minerals that are generally find 00:20:41.05\00:20:43.66 problems within the people that I am trying to 00:20:43.69\00:20:45.74 help through this therapeutic fast 00:20:45.77\00:20:48.64 that we offer to people come to 00:20:48.67\00:20:51.26 Lifestyle Center of America. So, what's the big deal 00:20:51.29\00:20:52.26 with magnesium levels going well. 00:20:52.27\00:20:54.41 Well, magnesium is generally low in people 00:20:55.08\00:20:58.35 anyhow in America. Because there is not 00:20:58.38\00:21:01.99 enough of in your diet it's a general rule. 00:21:02.02\00:21:04.28 Magnesium in our diets most of it should come 00:21:04.31\00:21:07.15 from plants and people are not eating enough 00:21:07.18\00:21:09.54 plant so they tend not to have enough magnesium, 00:21:09.57\00:21:12.45 some interesting work done by a fellow by the 00:21:12.48\00:21:14.58 name of Larry Reznik, using magnetic resonance 00:21:14.61\00:21:17.50 imaging to look inside the cells of the body not just 00:21:17.53\00:21:21.75 the blood test. The blood test it doesn't correlate 00:21:21.78\00:21:24.37 but we are talking about inside the cells of the 00:21:24.63\00:21:26.36 body. It demonstrates that people with diabetes, 00:21:26.39\00:21:29.64 hypertension, heart disease, obesity, 00:21:29.67\00:21:33.22 pretty much across the board have low 00:21:33.56\00:21:36.03 intracellular magnesium and the pills that people 00:21:36.39\00:21:39.70 take. The water pills for example tend to suck 00:21:39.73\00:21:42.18 magnesium out of the body. So, its already a 00:21:42.21\00:21:44.60 low bit for others, so it tends to be low, you drop 00:21:44.63\00:21:46.99 it low, you drop it low or need have with muscle 00:21:47.02\00:21:48.61 cramps and fatigue and people just don't feel very good. 00:21:48.64\00:21:53.36 And you can give actually a magnesium shot 00:21:53.93\00:21:55.58 for cancer. Oh! why do that, a supplement 00:21:55.61\00:21:58.60 by mouth works fine. Okay, well, I like 00:21:58.63\00:22:01.83 giving shots. You like shots okay. As a worse, 00:22:01.86\00:22:04.28 I guess I expect. Potassium, Potassium is another it's 00:22:04.31\00:22:08.64 similar to the magnesium remember that many of 00:22:08.67\00:22:11.94 the water pills that people take for their 00:22:11.97\00:22:13.95 hypertension or congestive heart failure 00:22:13.98\00:22:16.31 also suck potassium out of the body and low 00:22:16.34\00:22:19.57 potassium can lead to problems with muscles, 00:22:19.60\00:22:23.89 and the heart and all kinds of things. 00:22:23.92\00:22:26.43 So, I don't recommend that people go on long 00:22:26.46\00:22:29.39 fast without some medical supervision and 00:22:29.42\00:22:33.44 sodium when it goes low. Oh! people tend to get 00:22:33.47\00:22:36.33 really weak and sorrow, I mean not happy. 00:22:36.36\00:22:39.14 Alright, and that, and that I guess you know when 00:22:39.95\00:22:42.44 ever I talked to someone who had low sodium they 00:22:42.47\00:22:44.31 just cannot start to act kind a loopy. Yes, I like 00:22:44.34\00:22:47.21 that probably good work for them. So, the danger 00:22:47.24\00:22:50.85 is then just to summarize them, I think we have a 00:22:50.88\00:22:52.58 graphic to summarize them we have dangers 00:22:52.61\00:22:55.04 that we mentioned low magnesium, low 00:22:55.07\00:22:56.93 potassium, low sodium and loss of muscle which 00:22:56.96\00:23:00.72 you said it happens in the first three days. 00:23:00.75\00:23:02.37 While the second and third day the most much 00:23:02.40\00:23:05.09 less on the first day but the second and third day 00:23:05.12\00:23:07.59 where they suppose to eat that is correct. 00:23:07.62\00:23:09.32 So, how do you do fasting at the Lifestyle Center of 00:23:09.78\00:23:14.79 America. Well, we don't offer to everybody 00:23:14.82\00:23:17.45 I don't' recommend that people do if for example 00:23:17.48\00:23:20.16 to loss weight. The reason I think its okay for people 00:23:20.19\00:23:24.10 with type 2 diabetes to do because their insulin 00:23:24.13\00:23:25.97 level are high. Insulin tends to hold the muscles 00:23:26.00\00:23:28.57 and I think it's much safer. So you don't do it 00:23:28.60\00:23:31.00 for losing weight, no I don't think it's 00:23:31.03\00:23:32.84 appropriate. Well, that may not quite true Don. 00:23:32.87\00:23:37.81 Often as I am talking to our guest about this 00:23:39.35\00:23:42.19 someone will say how often should we fast, 00:23:42.52\00:23:47.50 okay, because it sound so good there is so many 00:23:48.37\00:23:51.20 benefits, they ready to embrace this well why don't we 00:23:51.23\00:23:54.20 fast can I do once a week could I fast two days 00:23:54.23\00:23:58.09 week. Actually, I think, the Bible talks about this 00:23:58.12\00:24:01.24 doesn't? Yes it does. Alright, so there is Bible 00:24:01.27\00:24:03.90 reason yes they do. We did we had a fellow who 00:24:03.93\00:24:06.77 decided he is going to fast for 40 days then ever, 00:24:06.80\00:24:09.05 but that's another story. Is he still with us? No. Okay. 00:24:09.08\00:24:13.37 No, he went home and I don't what happen to him. 00:24:13.87\00:24:15.49 But, my answer to him is I think it will be a good 00:24:16.19\00:24:19.10 idea if we fast it every day and you have brought 00:24:19.13\00:24:22.77 up several times already that concept of breakfast, 00:24:22.80\00:24:26.52 yeah! Right. That first meal of the day, it makes 00:24:26.55\00:24:29.12 a lot of sense physiologically for us to 00:24:29.15\00:24:31.50 reach the fasting state on a daily basis, if we eat a 00:24:31.53\00:24:36.42 small meal or no meal at all in the evening than 00:24:36.45\00:24:39.86 during the night our body changes over to the 00:24:39.89\00:24:43.33 fasting state it runs out of the energy intestines. 00:24:43.36\00:24:46.48 It starts using energy from storage in the first 00:24:46.63\00:24:50.48 24 hours it is not so much muscle it's much more 00:24:50.51\00:24:53.04 from the fat department. Okay. Isn't it interesting 00:24:53.07\00:24:56.07 concept, it is. Almost exciting when you start 00:24:56.10\00:24:58.61 thinking about losing weight while you 00:24:58.64\00:25:01.02 sleeping. Yes it's painless. It's painless. Unless you 00:25:01.05\00:25:05.00 wakeup, not that bad, So, fasting is good 00:25:05.03\00:25:10.07 everyday but through maybe just cutting out 00:25:10.10\00:25:13.84 their evening meal so someone is overweight 00:25:13.87\00:25:15.98 that's watching that's a good way to go about it 00:25:16.01\00:25:17.77 cut off the evening meal. We have had people tell 00:25:17.80\00:25:19.87 us that was the one thing they learn from our 00:25:19.90\00:25:22.04 program and fellow a call here a couple of months ago, 00:25:22.07\00:25:25.03 who said, you know that's only thing I have done 00:25:25.06\00:25:26.75 I lost 60 pounds, how does someone stop 00:25:26.78\00:25:30.75 fasting when say they went on a extended fast? 00:25:30.78\00:25:33.54 How do you start people from fasting? 00:25:33.95\00:25:35.47 That was something that I thought we want to talk 00:25:36.11\00:25:38.70 about people who fast for a long time are in danger, 00:25:38.73\00:25:41.80 their body get to use to having no food and if you 00:25:42.52\00:25:44.99 put in too much all at once it can be pretty 00:25:45.02\00:25:47.66 dangerous. The food can actually plug up 00:25:47.69\00:25:50.71 the blood vessels and can make people very sick, 00:25:50.74\00:25:53.86 for prisoners of war who were allowed after 00:25:53.89\00:25:57.04 starving to eat lots of food I actually made very 00:25:57.48\00:26:02.38 sick. So, what we recommend is that people 00:26:02.41\00:26:05.18 move to just steamed vegetables. They are easy 00:26:06.07\00:26:08.53 to digest, easy to handle and do a couple meals of 00:26:08.56\00:26:12.76 just plain steam vegetables. You transition them back, 00:26:12.79\00:26:16.14 and transition back your regular food. 00:26:16.17\00:26:17.79 Well, you're a Christian clinician and you know, 00:26:17.82\00:26:20.29 I know your I believe you are man of faith you 00:26:20.32\00:26:23.11 dedicated your life to service sacrificial service 00:26:23.14\00:26:25.95 are there are any spiritual concepts that you like to 00:26:25.98\00:26:28.33 bring out when your talking about fasting? 00:26:28.36\00:26:30.19 Getting back to the beginning where people 00:26:31.33\00:26:32.74 think that fasting is spiritual thing yes we can 00:26:32.77\00:26:36.21 do that, in many ways diabetes is a disease of 00:26:36.24\00:26:42.68 threaten, I use that word carefully but we are 00:26:42.71\00:26:46.36 eating more than we eat, the disease is actually 00:26:46.39\00:26:49.62 cause by eating more than we need and not 00:26:50.14\00:26:53.94 exercising enough, we could take that for a 00:26:53.97\00:26:57.29 model to sin for example, sin is selfishness is taking 00:26:57.32\00:27:03.10 for yourself not to give. Your are taking spiritual 00:27:03.13\00:27:07.04 calories in than your putting out and you 00:27:07.07\00:27:11.12 develop spiritual diabetes it might make sense to 00:27:11.15\00:27:15.55 stop now that treats your spiritual diabetes, 00:27:15.58\00:27:19.16 to stop going to church just feed to yourself 00:27:19.83\00:27:23.25 entertainment and begin to do some service head 00:27:23.28\00:27:27.14 back on those calories fast and start serving and 00:27:27.17\00:27:31.80 watch the whole process reverse itself 00:27:31.83\00:27:34.46 and self-efficiency.
