Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:50.50\00:00:52.17 Today we're going to talk about supplements. 00:00:52.20\00:00:54.05 There are many supplements out there. 00:00:54.08\00:00:56.01 Are they good? 00:00:56.04\00:00:57.44 Are they bad, useful? 00:00:57.47\00:01:00.19 We're going to talk to someone that has considered this for a 00:01:00.22\00:01:02.71 number of years, Dr. David DeRose. 00:01:02.74\00:01:04.41 He is a physician, he's practiced for over 20 years. 00:01:04.44\00:01:07.35 He has a specialty in internal medicine. 00:01:07.38\00:01:10.06 and also preventative medicine. 00:01:10.09\00:01:11.77 You've worked a various lifestyle centers, different 00:01:11.80\00:01:14.66 places around America and also some work internationally 00:01:14.69\00:01:18.06 You have a ministry called CompassHealth. net 00:01:18.09\00:01:23.05 So all points of the compass. 00:01:23.08\00:01:25.74 You cover all kinds of different things. 00:01:25.77\00:01:28.46 You have that website that has a lot the things we're going to 00:01:28.49\00:01:33.05 talk about and also a lot of other subjects right there 00:01:33.08\00:01:36.11 so people can take a closer look. 00:01:36.14\00:01:37.98 That's right. 00:01:38.01\00:01:38.98 There will be some overviews of the materials 00:01:38.99\00:01:40.29 that we cover today on the website as well as a lot 00:01:40.32\00:01:44.20 of other information that I know our viewers will enjoy. 00:01:44.23\00:01:47.20 There is no charge for any of those free resources. 00:01:47.23\00:01:50.01 Talk to us about supplements, nutritive supplements, 00:01:50.04\00:01:55.24 all different types of supplements. 00:01:55.27\00:01:56.54 You have stores full of them. 00:01:56.57\00:01:58.08 Are they good, are they bad? 00:01:58.11\00:01:59.14 Help us with this. 00:01:59.17\00:02:00.82 One of the ways I like to look at this is - you take a 00:02:00.85\00:02:05.10 supplement, you take a compound if you've got a deficiency of 00:02:05.13\00:02:10.22 of that compound. 00:02:10.25\00:02:11.22 What most people are doing today, 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.66 instead of having that philosophy, they're taking 00:02:13.69\00:02:16.97 the philosophy of "Well, I've heard this about something, 00:02:17.00\00:02:19.93 and I've heard that about something and then I'm 00:02:19.96\00:02:22.22 taking this as a result. " 00:02:22.25\00:02:23.79 I'm not going to say every supplement is used just for 00:02:23.82\00:02:26.56 deficiency but especially when we speak about basic nutrients 00:02:26.59\00:02:29.91 that's usually one of the first questions we want to ask. 00:02:29.94\00:02:32.74 So is there a deficiency and if there is then we look, 00:02:32.77\00:02:35.32 but if there's not - don't worry about it so much. 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.99 That's one approach. 00:02:38.02\00:02:39.53 Second thing, if you've got specific problems and there is 00:02:39.56\00:02:43.26 scientific rationale or a literature base that would say 00:02:43.29\00:02:46.73 this may respond to a certain supplement, then by all means 00:02:46.76\00:02:50.86 this may be worthy of consideration. 00:02:50.89\00:02:52.95 I wish we could take some calls today and have people 00:02:52.98\00:02:55.81 actually tell us about the different supplements they are 00:02:55.84\00:03:00.10 taking but we just polled those working in the studio 00:03:00.14\00:03:04.34 Some were taking multi-vitamins, some were taking glucosamine 00:03:04.37\00:03:08.61 some were taking... well various things we've heard. 00:03:08.64\00:03:11.45 So we might deal with some of those. 00:03:11.49\00:03:13.07 What should we beware of when we're looking at supplements? 00:03:13.11\00:03:16.36 The first thing to beware of, you mentioned multi-vitamins 00:03:16.39\00:03:19.60 and that's a combination product. 00:03:19.64\00:03:21.45 I don't have as big a problem with that. 00:03:21.48\00:03:25.13 We'll talk about multi-vitamins in a minute, but many companies 00:03:25.17\00:03:30.02 are out there trying to put together their proprietary 00:03:30.05\00:03:32.95 supplement. 00:03:32.98\00:03:33.95 This is true with multi-vitamins. 00:03:33.96\00:03:35.22 Everyone's got their special mix of things and they're trying to 00:03:35.25\00:03:40.76 promote varying degrees why you should buy theirs. 00:03:40.79\00:03:44.39 I'm always very concerned when someone is trying to promote 00:03:44.42\00:03:48.83 some proprietary blend of things and trying to charge people top 00:03:48.87\00:03:52.43 dollar for it. 00:03:52.46\00:03:53.46 So anytime it looks like they're trying to make money off 00:03:53.49\00:03:56.18 something - beware! 00:03:56.21\00:03:57.18 Well, let's be realistic. 00:03:57.20\00:03:59.40 There's going to be no supplement sold where 00:03:59.43\00:04:01.69 they're trying to loose money, right? 00:04:01.72\00:04:03.20 Probably, that's correct. 00:04:03.23\00:04:05.07 But here's the point. 00:04:05.10\00:04:06.46 Let's say you've got a specific problem - let's take arthritis. 00:04:06.49\00:04:10.90 Because you mentioned glucosamine chondroitin, 00:04:10.93\00:04:13.57 and whatever. 00:04:13.60\00:04:14.60 Well, what do you think the research shows of all the 00:04:14.63\00:04:18.95 supplements that are out there for arthritis, from my 00:04:18.98\00:04:21.23 perspective what I've seen out there, the most compelling 00:04:21.26\00:04:24.40 evidence suggests that glucosamine is helpful. 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.77 So if I stick a bunch of glucosamine in a pill 00:04:26.80\00:04:31.16 and also put some chondroitin, MSN, and some other things 00:04:31.19\00:04:35.02 I'm not saying any of those other things are not 00:04:35.05\00:04:37.99 helpful, but what I am saying is many times only one or a few 00:04:38.02\00:04:43.96 of the compounds in these multiple supplements may be 00:04:43.99\00:04:47.63 efficacious - helpful. 00:04:47.66\00:04:50.51 Actually helpful in doing what you want it to do. 00:04:50.54\00:04:53.82 So when I'm taking care of a patient, what I tend to do is 00:04:53.85\00:04:56.83 say, "Look you've got joint pain, let's look first of all 00:04:56.86\00:05:00.46 at why you've got the joint pain. " 00:05:00.49\00:05:02.11 Because if there is something you're doing... 00:05:02.14\00:05:06.42 Yes, like chopping 600 cords of wood a day! 00:05:06.45\00:05:10.92 That's right. 00:05:10.95\00:05:12.27 That could cause some joint pain. 00:05:12.30\00:05:14.64 And maybe you need to cut back to just 500! - laughter - 00:05:14.67\00:05:18.10 Or maybe you need to ice the joint after 00:05:18.13\00:05:21.10 doing all the chopping. 00:05:21.13\00:05:23.61 Yes, by the same token, if you weigh 500 pounds and you're 00:05:23.64\00:05:28.10 having knee pain... 00:05:28.13\00:05:29.10 I'm not saying that the chondroitin has no value. 00:05:29.13\00:05:33.74 But look at the big problem. 00:05:33.77\00:05:35.62 Look at the big problem and then it's fine to use the supplement. 00:05:35.65\00:05:38.67 By the way, of those supplements the glucosamine is the one 00:05:38.70\00:05:43.10 that seems to have the most beneficial effectiveness. 00:05:43.13\00:05:46.23 In fact, the studies I've seen it's the only one that really 00:05:46.26\00:05:49.08 has compelling data that I've seen. 00:05:49.11\00:05:51.11 I'm not going to tell you that I've seen every single study 00:05:51.14\00:05:54.07 done on these compounds but this has been a view of many in the 00:05:54.10\00:05:58.60 alternative, complimentary medicine area. 00:05:58.63\00:06:01.14 Glucosamine is really the supplement that seems to stand 00:06:01.17\00:06:05.72 head and shoulders above the others. 00:06:05.75\00:06:07.03 It's not to say there's no value to the others 00:06:07.06\00:06:09.36 but the chondroitin, since we mentioned it, 00:06:09.39\00:06:12.61 a lot of us are very worried about. 00:06:12.64\00:06:14.24 Some people say, "Well, sure DeRose is worried about it 00:06:14.27\00:06:19.12 because it's an animal product and he's this vegetarian. 00:06:19.15\00:06:22.37 Well, I was at a conference, probably five years ago now, 00:06:22.40\00:06:25.69 a high profile rheumatologist at one of these big medical centers 00:06:25.72\00:06:30.46 and she was sharing with this audience of ostensibly 00:06:30.49\00:06:36.80 non-vegetarians, even though I and my wife were there, 00:06:36.83\00:06:39.42 that she was worried about all the animal products 00:06:39.45\00:06:44.04 that were on the market because of the mad cow situation 00:06:44.07\00:06:48.60 and cattle that were being funneled in different direction, 00:06:48.63\00:06:52.05 she was worried about where chondroitin was coming from. 00:06:52.08\00:06:56.91 Now on your website compasshealth. net 00:06:56.94\00:07:01.87 do you have a list of things that you've researched? 00:07:01.90\00:07:04.60 That would be a very helpful list. 00:07:04.63\00:07:06.36 There's a number of subjects that we've researched now. 00:07:06.39\00:07:09.05 All the things that we're going to talk about, as far as 00:07:09.08\00:07:10.42 supplements, because this is kind of a free flowing dialogue, 00:07:10.45\00:07:13.19 will not necessarily be there. 00:07:13.22\00:07:14.98 But we've got a lot of information that covers a 00:07:15.01\00:07:17.15 variety of supplements and other conditions. 00:07:17.18\00:07:19.39 So you've seen some supplements that are efficacious, or they 00:07:19.42\00:07:23.72 have a good effect, and you've seen some that are not. 00:07:23.75\00:07:25.71 Like saw palmetto you say is helpful and so is 00:07:25.74\00:07:31.08 beta-sitosterol for working with prostate enlargement. 00:07:31.11\00:07:38.35 There is data that suggests that men who have prostate 00:07:38.38\00:07:42.07 enlargement that the saw palmetto appears to be 00:07:42.10\00:07:44.99 helpful for many of them. 00:07:45.02\00:07:46.22 Even more impressive from the data I've seen is a compound 00:07:46.25\00:07:50.87 called beta-sitosterol. 00:07:50.90\00:07:52.64 It's found in a number of plant products. 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.73 But this naturally occurring plant sterol actually has 00:07:54.76\00:08:00.14 cholesterol lowering properties as well as evidence that it can 00:08:00.17\00:08:03.91 actually help with prostate enlargement and symptoms 00:08:03.94\00:08:07.62 of prostate enlargement at least. 00:08:07.65\00:08:08.98 So whatever the claims, if they're trying to make a lot 00:08:09.01\00:08:11.62 of money and say theirs is the best - always take that 00:08:11.65\00:08:13.92 with a grain of salt or beware. 00:08:13.95\00:08:16.03 And then secondly, you're not saying that all are bad 00:08:16.06\00:08:18.96 but look at the major problem first 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.69 before you go to a supplement. 00:08:20.72\00:08:21.92 Yes, and look at the specific constituents of the supplement. 00:08:21.95\00:08:25.60 Like I'm saying, if there's good data out there that 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.34 seems to suggest that saw palmetto may be helpful 00:08:28.37\00:08:30.91 try the saw palmetto for a period of time and ideally do it 00:08:30.94\00:08:35.28 working with your physician. 00:08:35.31\00:08:36.78 More and more physicians are open to incorporate some of 00:08:36.81\00:08:41.36 these complimentary therapies because their patients 00:08:41.39\00:08:43.50 are using it. 00:08:43.53\00:08:44.50 They've got to do it, they've got to get interested in it, 00:08:44.51\00:08:46.99 and medical education is encouraging physicians to 00:08:47.02\00:08:52.13 at least ask their patients about these things because 00:08:52.16\00:08:55.58 the other big issue, we've got to admit it, is these 00:08:55.61\00:08:58.97 supplements can interact with other medications 00:08:59.00\00:09:02.44 that people are taking. 00:09:02.47\00:09:03.50 And there are some that are actually dangerous. 00:09:03.53\00:09:05.71 You say on your website that excess selenium can be a real 00:09:05.74\00:09:09.81 problem and then others as well. 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.56 Selenium is a good example. 00:09:11.59\00:09:13.62 We need selenium, which is a micro nutrient for optimal 00:09:13.65\00:09:17.83 immune function. 00:09:17.86\00:09:18.88 In many people's minds the old adage, a little is good 00:09:18.91\00:09:23.45 a lot is better, but the problem with selenium 00:09:23.48\00:09:25.99 is when you take excessive amounts it tends to suppress 00:09:26.02\00:09:29.10 immune function. 00:09:29.13\00:09:30.92 Another example is vitamin B6. 00:09:30.95\00:09:33.65 Vitamin B6 also known as pyridoxamine. 00:09:33.68\00:09:37.01 If you're pyridoxamine deficient you can get a 00:09:37.04\00:09:40.04 neuropathy. 00:09:40.07\00:09:41.04 You can have nerve problems. 00:09:41.05\00:09:42.15 So it's good to have enough of it? 00:09:42.18\00:09:43.75 It's good to have enough. 00:09:43.78\00:09:44.75 But if you take too much, you know what you can get? 00:09:44.76\00:09:46.85 Same thing - neuropathy. 00:09:46.88\00:09:48.93 You're exactly right. 00:09:48.96\00:09:49.93 You can get a neuropathy from too much. 00:09:49.94\00:09:51.98 Too much or too little? 00:09:52.01\00:09:53.44 Too little. 00:09:53.47\00:09:54.44 So just let the body regulate it and don't you 00:09:54.45\00:09:55.48 mess around with it? 00:09:55.51\00:09:56.60 Well, yes, that's great if you've got the good diet 00:09:56.63\00:10:02.02 that you're on, Don. 00:10:02.05\00:10:03.02 I can say that to you because I had lunch with you today 00:10:03.03\00:10:06.97 and saw what you ate. 00:10:07.00\00:10:07.97 Yes, and it was pretty good! 00:10:08.00\00:10:08.99 It was. 00:10:09.02\00:10:09.99 It's what you had too! 00:10:10.00\00:10:11.47 But a lot of people should. 00:10:11.50\00:10:13.78 They're not getting a balanced diet so the 00:10:13.81\00:10:15.18 knee-jerk response is what? 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.18 Take a little bit more. 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.38 Take a multi-vitamin. 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.47 And what I would suggest is what we're leaning is that's 00:10:21.50\00:10:24.57 a dangerous strategy to follow. 00:10:24.60\00:10:27.19 Because more and more things that we have listed on those 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.64 multi-vitamins we're getting concerned about. 00:10:29.67\00:10:31.64 Let me give you a good example is the Vitamin A compounds. 00:10:31.67\00:10:33.73 Vitamin A because they are not water soluble? 00:10:33.76\00:10:36.10 They're not water soluble, that's true. 00:10:36.13\00:10:38.69 They don't just pass through the system. 00:10:38.72\00:10:40.13 But there's a bigger problem. 00:10:40.16\00:10:42.14 When we look at Vitamin A, the pre form Vitamin A, the form 00:10:42.17\00:10:48.30 that the body uses, or you look at beta-carotene, which is what 00:10:48.33\00:10:51.33 we call a precursor, it's something the body converts into 00:10:51.36\00:10:53.91 active Vitamin A, with either of those compounds, 00:10:53.94\00:10:57.29 did look at some of the initial work on cancer. 00:10:57.32\00:11:02.37 When we look at that as a medical community we saw the 00:11:02.40\00:11:05.63 people were eating more beta-carotene had less cancer. 00:11:05.66\00:11:10.42 So what was the thought? 00:11:10.45\00:11:12.06 The thought was more is good. 00:11:12.09\00:11:14.38 So they did some actual clinical studies where they gave people 00:11:14.41\00:11:17.61 with high risk of cancer, like smokers, they gave them extra 00:11:17.64\00:11:20.73 beta-carotene. 00:11:20.76\00:11:22.04 By in large, you know what happened? 00:11:22.07\00:11:23.95 They got more cancer. 00:11:23.98\00:11:26.06 Because? 00:11:26.09\00:11:27.06 What appears to be happening is beta-carotene is one of this 00:11:27.09\00:11:31.14 family of retinoid. 00:11:31.17\00:11:32.63 One in this family of compounds. 00:11:32.66\00:11:34.66 When you just take one, it overwhelms the body's ability 00:11:34.69\00:11:38.14 to utilize a whole host of other good, related compounds. 00:11:38.17\00:11:42.25 Like zeoxanthin, lutein, lycopene, and number of these 00:11:42.28\00:11:48.08 other compounds that are very helpful to the body. 00:11:48.11\00:11:50.90 So if you're overdoing it on one thing it decreases the ability 00:11:50.93\00:11:54.89 for the body to use other things that really needs to 00:11:54.92\00:11:57.57 fight off cancer. 00:11:57.60\00:11:58.57 That's exactly right and we've seen this if you look at 00:11:58.59\00:12:01.72 drug and nutrient interactions and if you look at 00:12:01.75\00:12:04.24 nutrient and nutrient interactions. 00:12:04.27\00:12:06.21 You start increasing one thing and you increase your 00:12:06.24\00:12:08.59 requirements for something else or you totally overwhelm the 00:12:08.62\00:12:12.07 body's ability to use things of that compound. 00:12:12.10\00:12:14.63 Because of the interaction? 00:12:14.66\00:12:15.85 That's right. 00:12:15.88\00:12:16.85 The analogy that I like, Don, is you got here to 3ABN 00:12:16.86\00:12:21.42 partly by driving on the freeway didn't you? 00:12:21.45\00:12:24.53 Yes, I try to stay on it most of the time. 00:12:24.56\00:12:26.87 While you were driving on that freeway that freeway has a 00:12:26.90\00:12:31.15 finite capacity. 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.32 In other words, maybe holiday week ends and things in some 00:12:32.35\00:12:37.42 places as you're going through major cities on those 00:12:37.45\00:12:39.71 interstates you may be bumper to bumper and may be 00:12:39.74\00:12:41.96 even stopping, is that right? 00:12:41.99\00:12:43.74 Unfortunately, that's correct. 00:12:43.77\00:12:45.44 So the freeways in our nation can only accommodate 00:12:45.48\00:12:49.15 so much traffic. 00:12:49.19\00:12:50.59 It's the same with the transport mechanisms in the body. 00:12:50.63\00:12:54.62 So when I look at people's supplements it's amazing 00:12:54.66\00:12:57.62 because they're saying, "I'm taking this pill for my joints, 00:12:57.66\00:13:01.33 this one for my cholesterol, this one for my diabetes, 00:13:01.36\00:13:06.54 this one to put more hair on my head," - by the way that's one 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.48 I'm not using, Don, if you were wondering! - laughter - 00:13:09.52\00:13:12.78 So you've got all these supplements. 00:13:12.82\00:13:14.44 I look at these supplements... 00:13:14.48\00:13:15.86 Not enough room on the highway for all of them. 00:13:15.89\00:13:19.63 I go down the list and this one has 10,000 units of 00:13:19.67\00:13:23.01 beta-carotene and this one has 20,000, and you add all 00:13:23.04\00:13:26.04 this stuff up and they're getting all kinds of stuff 00:13:26.08\00:13:29.04 that they're not even aware of. 00:13:29.07\00:13:30.35 They thought, "Well, I just was taking this for my joints. " 00:13:30.38\00:13:32.90 So, what the point of all this is, 00:13:32.93\00:13:35.65 we've got to look at what we're doing. 00:13:35.69\00:13:38.34 If you've got a problem, talk with your doctor, get the 00:13:38.37\00:13:42.26 information, read up about it, go to my website, whatever it 00:13:42.30\00:13:45.26 is you're going to do, get the different information sources 00:13:45.30\00:13:48.59 you can, tap into them and say what is a reasonable strategy 00:13:48.62\00:13:51.88 ideally that I can plan together with my 00:13:51.92\00:13:54.95 health care professional? 00:13:54.98\00:13:56.14 Less is more. 00:13:56.17\00:13:57.14 Less is often more. 00:13:57.15\00:13:58.85 We're talking with Dr. David DeRose. 00:13:58.88\00:14:01.00 We're talking about supplements. 00:14:01.03\00:14:02.36 The analogy he just gave of a freeway is an apt one. 00:14:02.39\00:14:05.33 Maybe it would be good for you to get out your list of 00:14:05.37\00:14:08.24 supplements and write them down and in the second half of the 00:14:08.28\00:14:10.94 program take an inventory. 00:14:10.97\00:14:12.71 Join us when we come back. 00:14:12.74\00:14:14.44 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:14:16.33\00:14:17.94 shed a few pounds? 00:14:17.98\00:14:18.97 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:14:19.00\00:14:21.52 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:21.56\00:14:24.75 If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then we 00:14:24.78\00:14:27.94 have a solution for you that works. 00:14:27.98\00:14:30.47 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:30.50\00:14:32.89 have written a marvelous booklet called, 00:14:32.93\00:14:35.25 Reversing Obesity Naturally, and we'd like to send it to you 00:14:35.28\00:14:38.80 free of charge. 00:14:38.84\00:14:39.92 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:39.96\00:14:42.94 by thousands who are able to eat more 00:14:42.97\00:14:45.28 and loose weight permanently 00:14:45.32\00:14:46.93 without feeling guilty or hungry through lifestyle medicine. 00:14:46.97\00:14:50.59 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:14:50.63\00:14:54.16 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach to eating, 00:14:54.19\00:14:57.68 nutrition, and lifestyle changes that can help you prevent 00:14:57.72\00:15:00.88 heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. 00:15:00.91\00:15:03.34 Call or write today for your free copy: 00:15:03.38\00:15:05.77 Welcome back. 00:15:16.61\00:15:17.67 We've been talking with Dr. David DeRose about 00:15:17.70\00:15:19.47 supplements. 00:15:19.50\00:15:20.47 He closed by giving us an illustration of having 00:15:20.48\00:15:23.48 so many cars on the freeway or maybe like juggling. 00:15:23.51\00:15:26.16 You can only juggle so many things and if you add 00:15:26.19\00:15:28.77 more and more supplements you may not have room for the 00:15:28.81\00:15:32.11 very needful things your body requires to fight off disease 00:15:32.15\00:15:35.42 and to keep your immune system healthy. 00:15:35.46\00:15:37.78 Is this an ok way to summarize what we've been saying? 00:15:37.82\00:15:40.72 I think it's great because the idea is God has given us certain 00:15:40.76\00:15:44.39 capacities. 00:15:44.42\00:15:45.39 He's given us insights on how to care for our bodies. 00:15:45.42\00:15:49.21 It's in His Word, it comes from an understanding and enlightened 00:15:49.24\00:15:52.16 spiritually directed understanding of physiology. 00:15:52.19\00:15:55.29 We tend to short circuit to try to take shortcuts and we really 00:15:55.32\00:16:01.90 end up getting short circuits that cause problems. 00:16:01.93\00:16:04.97 So these general lifestyle principles many times people 00:16:05.00\00:16:09.62 want to hear good news about their bad habits. 00:16:09.65\00:16:11.28 If they can be over weight and just take a couple pills 00:16:11.31\00:16:15.68 and feel like they're better they probably want to do that. 00:16:15.71\00:16:17.82 Have you ever encountered that? 00:16:17.85\00:16:19.77 Of course. 00:16:19.80\00:16:22.29 People are always looking for some easy way out. 00:16:22.32\00:16:25.39 Since we are talking about over weight, I just want to make 00:16:25.42\00:16:27.95 sure that our viewers don't get the wrong idea in that 00:16:27.98\00:16:31.91 illustration I shared earlier in the program 00:16:31.94\00:16:34.60 about the 500 pound individual who's got arthritis. 00:16:34.63\00:16:40.39 I don't tell someone, "Look we're not going to help you 00:16:40.42\00:16:44.68 until you loose 300 pounds. " 00:16:44.71\00:16:46.96 "We're not going to give you any medication, supplements, 00:16:46.99\00:16:49.98 or do anything for you. " 00:16:50.01\00:16:50.98 Here's what I'm getting at, look at it this way. 00:16:50.99\00:16:53.88 If someone is not focused on the underlying problem, then I 00:16:53.91\00:17:01.67 am not really helping them address the problem if I'm 00:17:01.70\00:17:04.64 just giving them a drug or a supplement. 00:17:04.67\00:17:07.16 Now let me say it this way. 00:17:07.19\00:17:08.49 The American public, as well as the public at large in the world 00:17:08.52\00:17:14.06 is recognizing that medications are often not all they've been 00:17:14.09\00:17:19.29 cracked up to be, right? 00:17:19.32\00:17:21.38 Yes, they're starting to get a grip on that. 00:17:21.41\00:17:23.19 Yes, we're getting a grip on it and people are gravitating 00:17:23.22\00:17:25.86 away from them and often times what they're gravitating to are 00:17:25.89\00:17:29.70 supplements because they're "natural. " 00:17:29.73\00:17:32.00 But there's problems there too. 00:17:32.03\00:17:33.88 There are problems there too. 00:17:33.91\00:17:35.04 We've talked about some of the things that can be problems 00:17:35.07\00:17:37.02 in excess but even more so if something's not helping you 00:17:37.05\00:17:41.69 and it's doing you no good, why take it? 00:17:41.72\00:17:44.74 Let me tell you about a woman who talked to me recently. 00:17:44.77\00:17:47.28 We'll call her Harriet, of course it's not her real name, 00:17:47.31\00:17:49.96 5'2" tall, weighed about 215 pounds. 00:17:49.99\00:17:53.35 That's a little high. 00:17:53.38\00:17:54.63 It is a little high. 00:17:54.66\00:17:55.63 But you know what her problems were? 00:17:55.64\00:17:56.61 The problem was being over weight. 00:17:57.29\00:18:00.46 That's one of her problems. 00:18:00.49\00:18:02.45 She had high blood pressure. 00:18:02.48\00:18:03.75 She had cholesterol problems. 00:18:03.78\00:18:05.76 She had a family history of breast cancer that she was 00:18:05.79\00:18:08.22 concerned about. 00:18:08.25\00:18:09.45 And when I talked with her she was taking like 50 to 100 00:18:09.48\00:18:13.65 supplements to address these concerns. 00:18:13.68\00:18:15.25 Whoa, what else did she do during the day? 00:18:15.28\00:18:16.93 That's quite a supplement! 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.61 And she wanted to go through each of them with me. 00:18:19.64\00:18:23.06 Actually I was interested to do it because what I realized was 00:18:23.09\00:18:28.21 going on she was focusing all her energy 00:18:28.24\00:18:31.19 to try to figure out... she couldn't even figure out 00:18:31.22\00:18:33.59 all that she was taking. 00:18:33.62\00:18:34.60 They say it's an extreme case but she was not focused 00:18:34.63\00:18:37.85 on a good exercise program or weight reduction program 00:18:37.88\00:18:41.55 which would have lowered her risk of breast cancer. 00:18:41.58\00:18:44.03 It would have lowered her cholesterol. 00:18:44.06\00:18:46.02 It would have helped her address her diabetes and 00:18:46.05\00:18:48.23 blood pressure problem. 00:18:48.26\00:18:49.63 She must have brought a suitcase. 00:18:49.66\00:18:51.98 Well, you see the point, Don. 00:18:52.01\00:18:53.89 We're trying to have this balance. 00:18:53.92\00:18:56.92 So, on one hand, yes, 00:18:56.95\00:18:58.80 Supplements have a role if they're prescribed for a 00:18:58.83\00:19:02.01 specific reason where there is some compelling medical evidence 00:19:02.04\00:19:05.64 at least some compelling medical theory, there's some support 00:19:05.67\00:19:09.13 for it, or there's an actual deficiency. 00:19:09.16\00:19:11.63 If not, you're asking for trouble. 00:19:11.66\00:19:13.49 If nothing more than depleting your bank account could be 00:19:13.52\00:19:17.05 something much, much worse. 00:19:17.08\00:19:18.95 So let's talk about some of these supplements. 00:19:18.98\00:19:20.70 What about, you said glucosamine is good for 00:19:20.73\00:19:23.37 osteoarthritis? 00:19:23.40\00:19:24.46 There is evidence that glucosamine is definitely 00:19:24.49\00:19:26.38 helpful in osteoarthritis. 00:19:26.41\00:19:28.22 I mentioned Harriet, just an interesting aside, she was 00:19:28.25\00:19:33.22 making sure her brother was taking not only glucosamine 00:19:33.25\00:19:37.70 but chondroitin and a bunch of other things purported 00:19:37.73\00:19:41.69 to have joint benefit and it turned out her brother didn't 00:19:41.72\00:19:44.97 have any joint symptoms. 00:19:45.00\00:19:47.13 So it doesn't do any good to take something 00:19:47.16\00:19:49.20 if you don't need it. 00:19:49.23\00:19:50.20 There's no rationale to do that because that's not 00:19:50.21\00:19:53.55 something that's been looked at and it doesn't even make 00:19:53.58\00:19:56.38 sense to treat a problem that's not there. 00:19:56.41\00:20:00.22 These are not things that generally speak about doing 00:20:00.25\00:20:02.74 prophylactic. 00:20:02.77\00:20:03.74 I'll give you an example though. 00:20:03.75\00:20:04.72 Prophylactic or preventive - one that there is some evidence for 00:20:04.73\00:20:07.45 is garlic. 00:20:07.48\00:20:08.45 Low dose garlic actually has been shown to decrease the risk 00:20:08.46\00:20:13.28 of developing colds - taking some garlic on a daily basis. 00:20:13.31\00:20:16.68 So garlic supplements are ok? 00:20:16.71\00:20:18.75 In that context. 00:20:18.78\00:20:21.18 If you were just on a plane flight and you were up all night 00:20:21.21\00:20:25.24 and you didn't get enough sleep. 00:20:25.27\00:20:26.34 Can you imagine a scenario like that? 00:20:26.37\00:20:28.88 And you said, "You know there were all these people coughing 00:20:28.91\00:20:31.37 on the plane, I think I'm going to take a couple 00:20:31.40\00:20:33.93 garlic capsules this morning. " 00:20:33.96\00:20:35.62 Slam of few of them back. 00:20:35.65\00:20:36.62 There's some rationale for doing that. 00:20:36.63\00:20:39.29 But to take 2 garlics the rest of your life and especially if 00:20:39.32\00:20:43.29 you're on blood thinning medications the garlic 00:20:43.32\00:20:45.57 may tip the balance against them. 00:20:45.60\00:20:47.58 This is an excellent place to speak about drug interactions 00:20:47.61\00:20:50.24 if you want to go that direction. 00:20:50.27\00:20:51.50 Let's go that direction. 00:20:51.53\00:20:52.72 What about drug interactions? 00:20:52.75\00:20:54.55 Well, drug interactions are very important and they're 00:20:54.58\00:20:56.77 especially critical with drugs with a 00:20:56.80\00:20:59.57 narrow therapeutic window. 00:20:59.60\00:21:01.48 Meaning? 00:21:01.51\00:21:02.52 Good question. 00:21:02.55\00:21:03.60 Therapeutic window - you've got windows in your house 00:21:03.63\00:21:06.33 right? 00:21:06.36\00:21:07.38 A few. 00:21:07.41\00:21:08.38 I was actually in a house the other day that had no windows 00:21:08.39\00:21:11.15 in one of their main rooms. 00:21:11.18\00:21:12.86 It was another building that had been converted into a home. 00:21:12.89\00:21:15.48 Interesting isn't it? 00:21:15.51\00:21:17.53 But this house actually that I'm speaking about, my house or 00:21:17.56\00:21:22.39 your house has a window. 00:21:22.42\00:21:23.39 And that window can only open so far, right? 00:21:23.40\00:21:27.08 Have you ever been in a house, maybe you have one yourself, 00:21:27.11\00:21:28.96 that has like a little half size window that you can open just 00:21:28.99\00:21:31.87 a little way? 00:21:31.90\00:21:32.87 Yes, in the bathroom. 00:21:32.88\00:21:34.18 So this window opens up just a little bit. 00:21:34.21\00:21:36.69 You can't get much through it can you? 00:21:36.72\00:21:40.17 There isn't much room to play with. 00:21:40.20\00:21:41.52 Well, we use that term, I know you know this being a health 00:21:41.55\00:21:45.09 professional, but for the benefit of our listeners, 00:21:45.12\00:21:48.19 narrow therapeutic window means there's not much room to get 00:21:48.22\00:21:51.76 access of a drug or too little of a drug. 00:21:51.79\00:21:54.69 Take an example. 00:21:54.72\00:21:56.66 A blood thinner like Coumadin, you get too little it's not 00:21:56.69\00:22:00.61 going to do the job of preventing the stroke, 00:22:00.64\00:22:03.27 the blood clot, or the mechanical heart valve 00:22:03.30\00:22:07.19 it's not going to keep it from clogging up - right? - 00:22:07.22\00:22:09.84 if you get too little. 00:22:09.87\00:22:10.84 If you get too much, what's going to happen? 00:22:10.85\00:22:12.34 It's going to cause too much thinning. 00:22:12.37\00:22:15.72 That's right and you could bleed to death - right? - 00:22:15.75\00:22:17.87 in extreme situations. 00:22:17.90\00:22:19.18 So it needs had within that narrow window, right? 00:22:19.21\00:22:20.80 Yes, so drugs with a narrow therapeutic window, if you're 00:22:20.83\00:22:23.29 taking one of those, if you're taking Linoxin, a drug for HIV, 00:22:23.32\00:22:27.06 a blood thinner, if you've had a kidney or liver transplant, 00:22:27.09\00:22:31.20 if you're taking any of these critical drugs that have to be 00:22:31.23\00:22:33.81 kept in a narrow range - do NOT start taking a supplement 00:22:33.84\00:22:38.37 unless you talk with your physician. 00:22:38.40\00:22:40.65 Because even some of these "good supplements" - I've given 00:22:40.68\00:22:43.56 you an example: garlic does have some benefits in the 00:22:43.59\00:22:46.95 anti-infectious arena. 00:22:46.98\00:22:49.20 But if you're also on Coumadin that may not be the thing 00:22:49.23\00:22:52.36 that you should be taking. 00:22:52.39\00:22:53.51 So talk with someone who knows how all these things interact. 00:22:53.54\00:22:56.44 Especially if you're on some of these critical drugs that 00:22:56.47\00:22:58.99 operate in a narrow range. 00:22:59.02\00:23:00.08 Now that's not the majority of drugs but I've given you some 00:23:00.11\00:23:02.91 examples and if you've got a question, ask your doctor 00:23:02.94\00:23:05.70 if this drug is very critical in the range that it operates in. 00:23:05.73\00:23:10.66 What about barley greens and all those derivatives that are 00:23:10.69\00:23:13.22 supposedly high in these green parts of the plants? 00:23:13.25\00:23:16.69 Well, you know plants are loaded with phytochemicals and these 00:23:16.72\00:23:20.09 are plant chemicals. 00:23:20.12\00:23:21.51 Many of these plant chemicals have health giving properties. 00:23:21.54\00:23:25.00 I don't feel any burden to say there's no value in these things 00:23:25.03\00:23:31.50 because there is some value. 00:23:31.53\00:23:32.58 But the question is, why is the person taking it, what is it 00:23:32.61\00:23:36.92 doing for them, and are there better ways to 00:23:36.95\00:23:40.17 accomplish the same end? 00:23:40.20\00:23:41.84 If they say, "I like barley green, I like how it tastes, 00:23:41.87\00:23:44.95 I like how it looks," you know whatever it is, 00:23:44.98\00:23:47.91 "I've been feeling better since I've been taking it. " 00:23:47.94\00:23:50.70 I do not have a great burden to say they can't use that. 00:23:50.73\00:23:53.76 But by the same token, if someone under false pretences 00:23:53.79\00:23:59.27 uses a pretext to get me to speak at a 00:23:59.30\00:24:02.02 barley green convention - it actually happened to me once - 00:24:02.05\00:24:04.67 Did you go? 00:24:04.70\00:24:05.89 I didn't know it was a barley green convention! 00:24:05.92\00:24:08.47 They lined me up for an out-of-town presentation 00:24:08.50\00:24:12.06 and I turn up at the big Barley Green Conference. 00:24:12.09\00:24:17.49 I'm their keynote speaker. 00:24:17.52\00:24:18.54 Whoa! 00:24:18.57\00:24:19.54 Yes! 00:24:19.55\00:24:20.52 Did they give you a green jacket? 00:24:20.53\00:24:21.50 - laughter - No, but Don, here's what's going on. 00:24:21.51\00:24:26.87 We're trying to market all these products when really 00:24:26.90\00:24:31.88 what we most need is to eat more fruits, whole grains, and 00:24:31.91\00:24:36.21 vegetables. 00:24:36.24\00:24:37.21 Look at it this way. 00:24:37.22\00:24:38.19 Think about it for a minute. 00:24:38.20\00:24:39.17 I don't know what's in barley green. 00:24:39.18\00:24:40.45 I don't have the whole list in front of me. 00:24:40.48\00:24:43.09 I've seen lists before and what's in it. 00:24:43.12\00:24:46.10 I can't recite it for you right now. 00:24:46.13\00:24:48.03 But you know what? 00:24:48.06\00:24:49.82 No matter what's in barley green there's a bunch of other hot 00:24:49.85\00:24:53.39 plant compounds. 00:24:53.42\00:24:54.69 They're not hot now but they will be next year 00:24:54.72\00:24:56.71 or the year after. 00:24:56.74\00:24:57.71 Better go to those conventions too 00:24:57.72\00:24:58.87 if you get on that band wagon. 00:24:58.90\00:25:00.26 That's right, but you know what's even better? 00:25:00.29\00:25:01.75 Why not start eating the variety of plant foods 00:25:01.78\00:25:06.05 that God's given us? 00:25:06.08\00:25:07.31 You know what one of the hot compounds is today? 00:25:07.34\00:25:09.59 I have no idea. 00:25:09.62\00:25:10.86 Lycopene. 00:25:10.89\00:25:11.89 Oh, I have heard about it. 00:25:11.92\00:25:12.93 Lutein... 00:25:12.96\00:25:13.93 pentothal? 00:25:13.94\00:25:15.56 You know what? 00:25:15.59\00:25:16.56 Just take the example of lycopene. 00:25:16.57\00:25:19.16 It's good for prostate health for example. 00:25:19.19\00:25:21.82 Do you know what? 00:25:21.85\00:25:23.68 Before lycopene was delivered you know what my grandfather 00:25:23.71\00:25:26.97 was doing? 00:25:27.00\00:25:27.97 He was eating lycopene. 00:25:27.98\00:25:29.39 He was. 00:25:29.42\00:25:30.40 He was born in Italy. 00:25:30.43\00:25:31.40 He was eating lots of tomato products and he never had a 00:25:31.41\00:25:34.48 prostate problem. 00:25:34.51\00:25:35.76 Now just what would have happened if he had focused 00:25:35.79\00:25:39.02 on getting all his nutrients from supplements? 00:25:39.05\00:25:41.05 It wouldn't have worked. 00:25:41.08\00:25:43.02 So you can't really recapture the fountain of youth either. 00:25:43.05\00:25:46.85 That's something people sometimes try and say. 00:25:46.88\00:25:49.87 One more classic example. 00:25:49.90\00:25:53.15 This just comes to mind. 00:25:53.18\00:25:54.36 I was a medical student years ago. 00:25:54.39\00:25:57.06 I actually had hair back then! 00:25:57.09\00:25:59.25 Don't look so astonished! - laughter - 00:25:59.28\00:26:02.97 I might have recognized you! - laughter - 00:26:03.00\00:26:05.34 You may have recognized me. 00:26:05.37\00:26:06.86 I was doing some health screening with the team. 00:26:06.89\00:26:09.97 We found this interesting fellow. 00:26:10.00\00:26:11.90 He did worse on the stress test than the 80 year old women 00:26:11.93\00:26:16.42 were doing. 00:26:16.45\00:26:17.42 He was in his 40's. 00:26:17.43\00:26:18.40 When we sat this guy down and started to counsel with him 00:26:18.41\00:26:21.20 he started telling us, "But I'm very conscientious 00:26:21.23\00:26:23.19 about my health. " 00:26:23.22\00:26:24.19 He started going down the list of all the 00:26:24.20\00:26:26.18 supplements he was taking. 00:26:26.21\00:26:27.76 You see the point. 00:26:27.79\00:26:28.96 He didn't do the basics. 00:26:28.99\00:26:30.91 He was depending on the bottles instead of the basics. 00:26:30.94\00:26:34.54 That's right. 00:26:34.57\00:26:35.54 So the message then today is there is some benefits 00:26:35.55\00:26:38.84 to many of these different things 00:26:38.87\00:26:40.64 but don't forget the basics and then if there is some kind of 00:26:40.67\00:26:44.20 deficiency then it's viable to fill it. 00:26:44.23\00:26:47.12 But don't add too much to the plate and all those different 00:26:47.15\00:26:50.02 things we talked about. 00:26:50.05\00:26:51.21 I don't think you needed this presentation. 00:26:51.24\00:26:53.17 you've got it all figured out. - laughter - 00:26:53.20\00:26:54.68 Well, thank you for what you have done on the website 00:26:54.71\00:26:57.45 Thank you for the supporting material here. 00:26:57.48\00:26:59.26 If people have questions they can look at this on the website 00:26:59.29\00:27:02.57 there - compasshealth. net 00:27:02.60\00:27:03.57 And thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule 00:27:03.60\00:27:07.32 to spend a little time with us here on Health for a Lifetime. 00:27:07.35\00:27:11.44 And thank you for joining us on Health for a Lifetime 00:27:11.47\00:27:13.42 Look, you can take stock now. 00:27:13.45\00:27:15.54 Take out that list. 00:27:15.57\00:27:16.85 Take out your pad of paper and your pencil, write down all your 00:27:16.88\00:27:19.35 supplements that you may be taking or others are taking. 00:27:19.38\00:27:22.31 Ask yourself the question, Do I really need these? 00:27:22.34\00:27:25.07 Or am I doing the basics? 00:27:25.11\00:27:27.53 Go to Dr. De Rose's website compasshealth. net 00:27:27.57\00:27:31.41 Look up the supporting materials there and do the very minimum 00:27:31.45\00:27:38.25 in terms of supplements. 00:27:38.28\00:27:39.70 Do the basics first and then if you need something 00:27:39.74\00:27:42.08 of course there's all kinds of things you could look at. 00:27:42.11\00:27:45.69 Be careful about your decisions and we hope you have health 00:27:45.73\00:27:49.27 that lasts for a lifetime. 00:27:49.31\00:27:51.35
