Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:49.91\00:00:51.95 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:51.98\00:00:53.65 and we're glad that you've joined us today for the program. 00:00:53.68\00:00:56.37 We're going to be talking about HIVES, 00:00:56.40\00:00:58.57 and things that mimic hives today. 00:00:58.60\00:01:01.82 And talking with us about this very practical subject 00:01:01.85\00:01:04.84 is Dr. David DeRose. 00:01:04.87\00:01:06.24 He's a physician from Southern Oklahoma, 00:01:06.27\00:01:08.38 and Dr. DeRose has a ministry that is web-based. 00:01:08.41\00:01:13.07 It's called compasshealth. net 00:01:13.10\00:01:16.02 and many of the things that we talk about today 00:01:16.05\00:01:17.99 will be able to be referenced there on that web site. 00:01:18.02\00:01:20.27 That's exactly right, Don 00:01:20.30\00:01:21.67 How did you get into the ministry 00:01:21.70\00:01:23.98 that you're involved in now? 00:01:24.01\00:01:25.38 Well Don, I had been a physician for probably 15, 18, 20 years... 00:01:25.41\00:01:30.27 You know, I hadn't really thought about how long 00:01:30.30\00:01:32.62 it had been when I started "Compass Health" 00:01:32.65\00:01:34.30 But the ministry has been going on for about 3 years, 00:01:34.33\00:01:36.89 but before that, I had been doing a variety of things, 00:01:36.92\00:01:40.49 especially emphasizing more 00:01:40.52\00:01:42.74 natural strategies for disease treatment. 00:01:42.77\00:01:44.93 My board certifications are in both internal medicine, 00:01:44.97\00:01:48.58 and preventive medicine and I've worked in a 00:01:48.61\00:01:51.04 variety of settings using those skills, 00:01:51.07\00:01:52.84 but the real vision I had seeing how many people could be helped 00:01:52.87\00:01:56.73 by these more natural therapies, 00:01:56.76\00:01:59.37 and then really trying to translate in there 00:01:59.40\00:02:01.82 something where it was just more than what I was doing 00:02:01.85\00:02:03.96 individually, getting more things out through 00:02:03.99\00:02:06.19 media resources, seminars, things of this nature, 00:02:06.22\00:02:09.01 and Compass Health was really set up to accomplish that. 00:02:09.04\00:02:11.34 Great, and it's a great resource. 00:02:11.37\00:02:13.02 I've visited the web site a number of times, 00:02:13.05\00:02:15.52 and it's been very useful to me. 00:02:15.55\00:02:17.52 Let's talk today about HIVES! 00:02:17.55\00:02:20.31 Hives and conditions that mimic hives. 00:02:20.34\00:02:23.25 What are hives? 00:02:23.28\00:02:24.65 Do a lot of people have this problem? 00:02:24.68\00:02:26.05 Well, hives... typically people think of them 00:02:26.08\00:02:30.53 as being associated with some type of allergic response. 00:02:30.56\00:02:33.95 It's actually much more common than many people realize. 00:02:33.98\00:02:37.61 A lot of individuals say, "What is a hive anyway?" 00:02:37.64\00:02:40.91 These are reddened, raised areas that typically 00:02:40.94\00:02:45.83 are triggered by anything from foods to other 00:02:45.86\00:02:49.18 allergic exposures, medications, other common triggers... 00:02:49.21\00:02:52.22 And they tend to be itching, they tend to move, 00:02:52.25\00:02:56.34 they don't stay in one spot for days. 00:02:56.37\00:02:58.94 They tend to move around on the body once they've 00:02:58.97\00:03:03.92 kind of raised their ugly head. 00:03:03.95\00:03:06.11 So hives or "urticaria" is the technical medical term 00:03:06.14\00:03:10.08 that we use. Urticaria 00:03:10.11\00:03:12.28 It's something that is quite prevalent. 00:03:12.31\00:03:15.16 So a lot of people have it? 00:03:15.19\00:03:17.32 So they're the type that move around; 00:03:17.35\00:03:20.29 they're not like shingles. 00:03:20.32\00:03:21.69 Shingles stay in one place Exactly 00:03:21.72\00:03:23.09 This is one of the things that we use to differentiate it 00:03:23.12\00:03:25.54 because, yes, whether it's shingles, 00:03:25.57\00:03:27.42 whether it's a typical eczema... 00:03:27.45\00:03:32.88 if you circle the lesion, you circle the spot, 00:03:32.91\00:03:35.45 one of the abnormal spots, 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.54 yes with shingles, with a patch of eczema, 00:03:37.57\00:03:40.83 that's going to stay in that same spot 00:03:40.86\00:03:43.44 as long as you have the problem. 00:03:43.47\00:03:45.34 Whereas with the hives, especially if you've been 00:03:45.37\00:03:48.34 exposed to a medication or you 00:03:48.37\00:03:49.78 are continuing to take the medication 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.29 not aware that it's triggering the problem, 00:03:51.33\00:03:53.77 you'll find that patch that you circled had become normal, 00:03:53.80\00:03:59.92 and now some other area is raised, red and itchy. 00:03:59.95\00:04:03.60 So if you look across the board, 00:04:03.63\00:04:05.49 probably about 20% 1 in 5 Americans will have 00:04:05.52\00:04:10.20 a bout of hives at some point in their life, 00:04:10.23\00:04:12.96 so it's definitely something worth spending some time 00:04:12.99\00:04:15.45 talking about and it also 00:04:15.48\00:04:17.00 it opens up, Don, this whole dialog that is so needed 00:04:17.03\00:04:21.10 with autoimmune diseases because some people have 00:04:21.13\00:04:24.64 chronic hives - it's actually an autoimmune process. 00:04:24.67\00:04:27.95 So what causes it? Food allergies? 00:04:27.98\00:04:30.17 Well, the acute urticaria, the acute hives; 00:04:30.20\00:04:34.41 food allergies is a BIG contributor, 00:04:34.44\00:04:37.11 and, of course, hives is on one end of this allergic spectrum. 00:04:37.14\00:04:42.38 I mean, no one dies from hives, per se. 00:04:42.41\00:04:45.62 But more severe allergic responses, 00:04:45.65\00:04:48.30 for example - to a food can cause what we call angioedema. 00:04:48.33\00:04:52.64 This can involve swelling of the face, the lips, the oral tissue, 00:04:52.67\00:04:58.09 the tissues in the throat, the oropharynx, nasopharynx, 00:04:58.12\00:05:00.89 and if those swell, especially in the laryngeal area 00:05:00.92\00:05:04.65 where your breathing is being negotiated... 00:05:04.68\00:05:07.79 Cut off breath - That's right! 00:05:07.82\00:05:10.33 People can DIE, anaphylactic shock is another 00:05:10.36\00:05:14.53 extreme example of just this continuum of more severe 00:05:14.56\00:05:18.89 allergic reactions that can occur with anything 00:05:18.92\00:05:21.54 from contact exposure to something chemical 00:05:21.57\00:05:24.53 that you're exposed to, 00:05:24.56\00:05:25.93 to medications, to foods. 00:05:25.96\00:05:29.29 Medications - what about? Definitely 00:05:29.32\00:05:31.94 They trigger it as well. 00:05:31.97\00:05:34.02 One of the most common causes of urticaria that we 00:05:34.05\00:05:38.05 often hear about are antibiotics. 00:05:38.08\00:05:40.41 And, whether it's the penicillins 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.67 or the cephalosporins, many, many people 00:05:42.70\00:05:45.90 are allergic to antibiotics. 00:05:45.93\00:05:47.87 It's typically NOT the first time they take that antibiotic, 00:05:47.90\00:05:51.12 but it's after they've had some exposure, 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.37 then their body has become more sensitive to it 00:05:53.40\00:05:56.41 and mounts once of these overwhelming kind of, 00:05:56.44\00:05:58.81 or you might say, OVERKILL responses 00:05:58.84\00:06:01.91 involving some immune cells that normally 00:06:01.94\00:06:04.12 don't need to be activated. 00:06:04.15\00:06:05.75 So now we need to know how to figure out 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.44 maybe what's causing hives, 00:06:08.47\00:06:10.29 and you've talked about the fact that the things 00:06:10.32\00:06:12.91 you're sharing now ONLY should be done under the 00:06:12.94\00:06:15.90 direction of someone who is a physician 00:06:15.93\00:06:17.91 or someone that is a healthcare provider 00:06:17.94\00:06:19.77 because you don't want to be stopping or starting 00:06:19.80\00:06:21.55 medications on your own, willy-nilly 00:06:21.58\00:06:23.40 Well, I mean, if you have hives, 00:06:23.43\00:06:25.96 and you're on medication, this is an emergent situation 00:06:25.99\00:06:29.52 you want to call your doctor right away 00:06:29.55\00:06:31.61 You're exactly right - 00:06:31.64\00:06:33.01 you do NOT want to stop the medication, 00:06:33.04\00:06:34.97 but by the same token, 00:06:35.00\00:06:36.72 you don't want to keep taking any of those drugs that 00:06:36.75\00:06:39.24 may be contributing to the problem. 00:06:39.27\00:06:40.64 So this involves some real clinical judgments 00:06:40.67\00:06:42.95 and expertise from the physician to say, 00:06:42.98\00:06:44.74 ...Look-it, what have we just added? 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.75 That's often the first thing to look at. 00:06:46.78\00:06:48.40 But if you are on a number of chronic medications, 00:06:48.43\00:06:50.46 they may look at rearranging those, 00:06:50.49\00:06:52.04 as well as looking at diet and other factors. 00:06:52.07\00:06:53.82 So you want to look at 2 things here, 00:06:53.85\00:06:56.11 food items and non-food items in terms of 00:06:56.14\00:07:00.78 dealing with this issue. 00:07:00.81\00:07:02.18 Exactly, it might be even more 00:07:02.21\00:07:04.10 useful to categorize it in 3 ways. 00:07:04.13\00:07:05.84 You've got the food items, 00:07:05.87\00:07:07.70 and then among the non-food, you look at medication 00:07:07.74\00:07:10.17 as a separate category. 00:07:10.20\00:07:11.57 And then maybe specifically looking at things that 00:07:11.60\00:07:14.76 you're in contact with that you may not think of. 00:07:14.79\00:07:17.78 You may not be INGESTING them, 00:07:17.81\00:07:19.31 it may be the laundry detergent that you're using. 00:07:19.34\00:07:22.17 It may be some jewelry that's containing nickel 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.86 which is a common allergen sensitizer. 00:07:24.89\00:07:27.61 So some things like this that you may not think of as 00:07:27.64\00:07:29.98 being medication-related. 00:07:30.01\00:07:31.65 So the non-food items would be, like you said, 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.35 fabric softeners, cosmetics, makeup? 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.90 Those things would all be on the list, 00:07:37.93\00:07:39.88 and the special concern should be for anything new 00:07:39.91\00:07:44.54 REALIZING though that something you've been using 00:07:44.57\00:07:47.16 habitually for a period of time, 00:07:47.19\00:07:48.59 you could have developed a sensitivity. 00:07:48.62\00:07:50.11 So that makeup that they put on me before we start the show 00:07:50.14\00:07:54.29 my good friend who put that on me, 00:07:54.32\00:07:56.69 could be leading me to hives. It's possible, it's possible! 00:07:56.72\00:08:01.06 They seem so nice in that room when they were putting it on. 00:08:01.09\00:08:03.44 They were very nice to me as well. 00:08:03.47\00:08:05.94 But, Don, let me tell you that this whole dialogue 00:08:05.97\00:08:08.99 about sensitivity is just the urticaria, the hives issue, 00:08:09.02\00:08:13.33 is just a small piece in a much broader dialog 00:08:13.36\00:08:16.76 because what a lot of physicians are believing right now 00:08:16.79\00:08:19.75 is we are seeing a lot of food sensitivities, 00:08:19.78\00:08:23.65 food intolerances and other things that we may 00:08:23.68\00:08:26.82 not have typically put in the box, if you will, 00:08:26.85\00:08:29.55 of allergy. 00:08:29.58\00:08:30.97 An allergy typically relates to an immune compound called 00:08:31.00\00:08:37.72 IgE - immunoglobulin E 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.24 That's what we usually think of being activated 00:08:40.27\00:08:42.89 in these kind of flagrant allergic things 00:08:42.92\00:08:45.71 like hives and angioedema. 00:08:45.74\00:08:47.84 But there are probably many other food intolerances 00:08:47.87\00:08:50.34 that people are dealing with. 00:08:50.37\00:08:51.74 So, I mean, fabric softener is not a food - at least I hope not 00:08:51.77\00:08:55.69 Cosmetics is not a food. Jewelry is not a food. 00:08:55.72\00:08:58.25 You put down here, also rubber or latex gloves 00:08:58.28\00:09:01.90 and stuff... That's not a food. 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.31 These are the non-food things you have listed here 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.33 in part of the web page, 00:09:05.36\00:09:06.73 but anything else in terms of non-food items 00:09:06.76\00:09:11.09 to just completely avoid? 00:09:11.12\00:09:12.50 Well, I'll mention one thing. 00:09:12.53\00:09:13.97 There are some things that are common sensitizers. 00:09:14.00\00:09:16.51 You know, we talked about nickel just briefly. 00:09:16.54\00:09:18.62 But another one is the drug - "neomycin" 00:09:18.65\00:09:21.35 Now, this is not an oral medication. 00:09:21.38\00:09:23.20 Neomycin is commonly put in these broad spectrum 00:09:23.23\00:09:29.77 antibiotic creams. That you rub on 00:09:29.80\00:09:33.74 Yes, you can buy them over-the-counter. 00:09:33.77\00:09:35.49 Many people will develop a sensitivity to this. 00:09:35.52\00:09:38.60 So I recommend that people stick with more simple 00:09:38.63\00:09:42.53 prescriptions. 00:09:42.56\00:09:43.93 Don't use the triple antibiotic, 00:09:43.96\00:09:45.72 when you can just use soap and water. 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.86 And don't use a triple antibiotic when you 00:09:47.89\00:09:50.83 can use a single antibiotic. 00:09:50.86\00:09:52.23 So, just some rules of thumb. 00:09:52.26\00:09:54.70 You know, we get in this mindset of overkill. 00:09:54.73\00:09:57.76 If a little is good, much more is better, 00:09:57.79\00:09:59.76 and that's where we get into problems. 00:09:59.79\00:10:01.16 The more - is not necessarily the merrier. 00:10:01.19\00:10:02.88 It might be the scarier! That's exactly right. 00:10:02.91\00:10:04.91 So antifungal agents, those sometimes are very 00:10:04.94\00:10:07.87 related to hives. 00:10:07.90\00:10:10.33 I mean, definitely! Anything especially... 00:10:10.36\00:10:12.34 Think about it this way... 00:10:12.37\00:10:13.74 You put on the broken skin, 00:10:13.77\00:10:15.14 you're going to increase your risk of problems. 00:10:15.17\00:10:16.80 The other thing that a lot of people don't realize 00:10:16.83\00:10:19.03 is if they've just taken a shower or bath, 00:10:19.06\00:10:21.52 the pores are open... 00:10:21.55\00:10:23.37 They're actually much more likely to have problems 00:10:23.40\00:10:27.12 with something that they put on their skin at that time. 00:10:27.15\00:10:30.25 Any plants that we should avoid? 00:10:30.28\00:10:32.54 I mean - pretty obvious, poison ivy, poison oak... 00:10:32.57\00:10:35.20 Yeah, I mean, this is an interesting topic you bring up, 00:10:35.23\00:10:38.67 because a lot of people have these contact allergens 00:10:38.70\00:10:42.03 and, you know, the poison ivy and poison oak, Don, 00:10:42.06\00:10:44.27 sure, we say - Okay, I'm allergic to poison ivy, 00:10:44.30\00:10:47.19 stay away from the poison ivy. 00:10:47.22\00:10:49.13 But you know how many people get poison ivy rashes 00:10:49.16\00:10:52.90 who never touch poison ivy? 00:10:52.93\00:10:55.09 How do they do that? 00:10:55.12\00:10:56.67 Several ways. Let's hear about them. 00:10:56.70\00:10:58.94 One of them is through pets! PETS - a pesky pet. 00:10:58.97\00:11:04.12 Well I wouldn't call it a pesky pet necessarily, 00:11:04.15\00:11:06.41 but you're beloved cat... The beloved cat! 00:11:06.44\00:11:10.33 Is out there hunting MICE or whatever it's hunting, 00:11:10.36\00:11:13.65 and has a great time hiding in the poison ivy. 00:11:13.68\00:11:16.93 Well what do you think happens when you are then 00:11:16.96\00:11:19.98 sitting with Fluffy, petting Fluffy on your lap... 00:11:20.01\00:11:21.92 And you start to get puffy! 00:11:21.95\00:11:24.17 That's right - that's exactly what happens. 00:11:24.20\00:11:26.73 Another setting... 00:11:26.76\00:11:29.08 where you get exposed to these things is the bonfire 00:11:29.11\00:11:33.30 or the fireplace fire. 00:11:33.33\00:11:35.73 Ooo - and it goes in the smoke and it wafts into your nose 00:11:35.76\00:11:38.82 and causes HIVES or... 00:11:38.85\00:11:41.18 It COULD cause hives; 00:11:41.21\00:11:42.58 it could cause other contact dermatitis 00:11:42.61\00:11:44.23 just depending on how your body responds to that 00:11:44.26\00:11:46.25 poison ivy or poison oak or poison sumac. 00:11:46.28\00:11:48.88 Never thought about that. 00:11:48.92\00:11:50.31 What about mowing the lawn? 00:11:50.35\00:11:51.72 Okay, now mowing the lawn is usually not a problem with 00:11:51.75\00:11:54.54 poison ivy unless you're mowing over the poison ivy, of course, 00:11:54.57\00:11:57.58 then that can be a problem. 00:11:57.61\00:11:58.98 But also the grass and the grass seeds, pollens 00:11:59.01\00:12:05.83 whatever, can be aerosolized when you're doing that. 00:12:05.86\00:12:08.40 Aerosolized means what? Put into the air. Oh 00:12:08.43\00:12:11.42 Okay, then you can breathe them in, 00:12:11.45\00:12:13.35 it can get on your skin and whatever. 00:12:13.38\00:12:15.04 Self-medicate. Well, or self-allergize, 00:12:15.07\00:12:18.40 whatever the terminology might be. 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.41 So wow, we have to be careful if you're out there 00:12:20.44\00:12:23.97 burning the fire and doing those different things 00:12:24.01\00:12:26.50 that could be the real reason that you're having these hives. 00:12:26.54\00:12:28.72 I mean, there are LOTS of ways - lots of ways that 00:12:29.07\00:12:31.38 we're exposed to irritant compounds 00:12:31.41\00:12:34.50 that can trigger allergic reactions. 00:12:34.53\00:12:36.64 Well you know, what about a lady that has all the 00:12:36.67\00:12:40.25 different kinds of soaps and jellies, 00:12:40.28\00:12:42.20 and all the different things in her cosmetic cupboard, 00:12:42.23\00:12:44.31 can those be causing hives? 00:12:44.34\00:12:46.76 Well they can be. 00:12:46.79\00:12:48.20 The challenge is... many of us we were exposed to 00:12:48.23\00:12:52.05 all kinds of chemicals every day and let's face it, 00:12:52.08\00:12:56.04 even though the statistics are high, 00:12:56.07\00:12:57.73 1 in 5 Americans developing 00:12:57.76\00:12:59.67 hives at some point in their life, 00:12:59.70\00:13:01.14 it's not like all of us are walking around with 00:13:01.17\00:13:03.75 red, itchy bumps all over, right? Right! 00:13:03.78\00:13:06.29 And they didn't have to do THAT much work on our 00:13:06.32\00:13:07.95 makeup jobs today, did they? 00:13:07.98\00:13:10.18 Well, not as much as we would 00:13:10.21\00:13:12.69 have originally thought, but yeah, right. 00:13:12.72\00:13:16.86 So what the point is though 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.26 is yes, these are common but we're exposing ourselves 00:13:18.29\00:13:20.81 to these laundry detergents, these fabric softeners, 00:13:20.84\00:13:24.18 all kinds of foods that we're eating from all over the world 00:13:24.21\00:13:27.24 and it's not like... you know it's 00:13:27.27\00:13:30.54 how are the hives today, friend... you greet somebody. 00:13:30.57\00:13:34.46 So we just have to keep that in perspective. 00:13:34.49\00:13:36.38 It's not to scare people away from all these things, 00:13:36.41\00:13:38.67 but to say, "Look it, if you ARE having a problem, 00:13:38.70\00:13:40.79 look at all these things. " Yeah, the list is actually 00:13:40.82\00:13:42.63 a broad list that you have to look at. 00:13:42.66\00:13:44.03 Now you've even put down here hot baths or showers! 00:13:44.06\00:13:47.15 Yes and that's because there's something called... 00:13:47.18\00:13:49.38 "cholinergic urticaria" 00:13:49.41\00:13:51.58 Cholinergic.. which is like a reaction of the body. 00:13:51.61\00:13:54.51 The cholinergic system. Yes, the body - actually 00:13:54.54\00:13:56.99 heat, can actually trigger hives in some people. 00:13:57.02\00:14:00.88 Other people get hives when they get cold. 00:14:00.91\00:14:03.36 So there are a number of PHYSICAL things 00:14:03.39\00:14:06.05 that can trigger hives. 00:14:06.08\00:14:07.51 So when we are speaking about hives, this isn't always 00:14:07.54\00:14:09.82 conventional allergy and so I'm glad you bring that up 00:14:09.85\00:14:12.55 because this is important to realize that you could 00:14:12.58\00:14:15.45 ...just getting into that hot shower - could trigger 00:14:15.48\00:14:18.96 a very serious reaction. 00:14:18.99\00:14:21.34 We've been talking with Dr. David DeRose 00:14:21.37\00:14:24.08 covering information on HIVES... 00:14:24.11\00:14:26.53 What causes them, what to do, 00:14:26.56\00:14:28.06 what things specifically to AVOID or to go down. 00:14:28.09\00:14:32.05 Again, the list that we're sharing here is available on 00:14:32.08\00:14:35.52 compasshealth. net 00:14:35.55\00:14:37.77 And there also should be a list you don't really go through 00:14:37.80\00:14:41.72 without having some assistance from a healthcare professional. 00:14:41.75\00:14:45.12 When we come back, we're going to look at 00:14:45.15\00:14:46.52 some other things we can do to avoid hives. 00:14:46.55\00:14:48.36 Hope you join us when we come back. 00:14:48.39\00:14:50.92 Have you found yourself wishing 00:14:51.72\00:14:53.09 that you could shed a few pounds? 00:14:53.12\00:14:54.84 Have you been on a diet for most of your life but not found 00:14:54.87\00:14:57.81 anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:57.84\00:15:00.11 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:15:00.14\00:15:03.00 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:15:03.03\00:15:05.67 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:15:05.70\00:15:08.63 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:15:08.66\00:15:10.74 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:10.77\00:15:12.96 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:15:12.99\00:15:15.92 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:15:15.95\00:15:18.48 by thousands who were able to eat more, 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.78 and lose weight permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:15:20.81\00:15:24.35 through lifestyle medicine. 00:15:24.38\00:15:26.05 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN, 00:15:26.08\00:15:29.66 and in this booklet, they present a sensible 00:15:29.69\00:15:32.24 approach to eating, nutrition and lifestyle changes 00:15:32.27\00:15:35.12 that can help you prevent heart disease, diabetes, 00:15:35.15\00:15:37.64 and EVEN cancer. 00:15:37.67\00:15:39.04 Call or write today for your free copy of... 00:15:39.07\00:15:41.20 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:41.23\00:15:43.06 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:15:43.09\00:15:45.99 It's ABSOLUTELY free of charge, so call or write today. 00:15:46.02\00:15:51.27 Welcome back, we're talking with Dr. David DeRose 00:15:51.60\00:15:54.03 We're talking about HIVES, a very practical subject. 00:15:54.06\00:15:56.53 Hives are differentiated from other types of skin problems 00:15:56.56\00:16:00.52 by the fact that they move all over the place. 00:16:00.55\00:16:02.76 Isn't that right, doctor? 00:16:02.79\00:16:04.16 Yes, basically a lesion that doesn't stay in the same place. 00:16:04.19\00:16:07.76 We have this outbreak, if you will, 00:16:07.79\00:16:10.31 that's related to the immune system, 00:16:10.34\00:16:12.04 and NOT to something specific with one point on the skin. 00:16:12.07\00:16:14.95 So the old saying... Does it hurt all over, or just in spots? 00:16:14.98\00:16:18.15 I mean, if it's all over, it's probably hives 00:16:18.18\00:16:21.24 because it moves all over. 00:16:21.27\00:16:22.64 Just in spots.. something else. 00:16:22.67\00:16:24.04 Yeah, that's a good way of looking at it probably. 00:16:24.07\00:16:28.09 Maybe not, but at least it gets us started. 00:16:28.12\00:16:29.95 You said there's also occupational hazards 00:16:29.98\00:16:33.01 or exposures that we need to be aware of 00:16:33.04\00:16:34.99 if we're trying to figure out why we have hives. 00:16:35.02\00:16:37.85 Yes, if we think about it, if we're talking about 00:16:37.88\00:16:40.93 an immune-related phenomenon 00:16:40.96\00:16:42.45 and that's what this is... anything can trigger that. 00:16:42.48\00:16:45.18 So we've been speaking about this broad list that includes 00:16:45.21\00:16:48.19 everything from foods to medications, 00:16:48.22\00:16:51.71 to things in the environment, 00:16:51.74\00:16:55.23 hot water with cholinergic urticaria. 00:16:55.26\00:16:58.12 Occupationally, whenever we talk about allergic responses, 00:16:58.15\00:17:02.52 we always have to consider the work environment. 00:17:02.55\00:17:05.18 And one of the BEST tests you can do is take a vacation! 00:17:05.22\00:17:09.06 Yeah, don't go to work. 00:17:09.09\00:17:10.46 That's exactly right... You heard it here on 3ABN! 00:17:10.49\00:17:12.66 If you're gone for several days, a week, over the weekend, 00:17:12.69\00:17:17.03 the symptoms go away; they return when you go 00:17:17.06\00:17:21.21 back to the workplace. 00:17:21.24\00:17:22.69 I mean, that's the classic scenario... 00:17:22.72\00:17:24.26 And this is not just true for hives... 00:17:24.29\00:17:26.56 People with cough, chronic cough can be an 00:17:26.59\00:17:29.09 asthma variant... another immunity problem. 00:17:29.12\00:17:31.83 And this is why you do it under a doctor's direction 00:17:31.86\00:17:33.75 because you don't want to lose your job. 00:17:33.78\00:17:35.33 Doctor, says I'm going to take off a few days 00:17:35.36\00:17:37.36 to see if this is causing my hives. 00:17:37.39\00:17:39.42 But often what we'll do is just simply ask... 00:17:39.45\00:17:41.52 What happens on the weekend? Oh 00:17:41.55\00:17:45.15 I mean, presumably you're getting a weekend off, 00:17:45.18\00:17:47.86 you're getting a week vacation. 00:17:47.89\00:17:49.51 What happened then? 00:17:49.54\00:17:51.41 And it's the same in the home. 00:17:51.44\00:17:53.09 If we're concerned that there is something 00:17:53.12\00:17:54.56 in the home, Don, that's triggering an allergic process, 00:17:54.59\00:17:57.63 whatever that allergic process may be; 00:17:57.66\00:17:59.22 whether it's hives or something else. 00:17:59.25\00:18:00.88 So what do we do for hives then? 00:18:00.91\00:18:02.74 Well basically, first you try to get a diagnosis. 00:18:02.77\00:18:06.18 What is causing the hives? 00:18:06.21\00:18:07.73 By working through all those things you've talked about. 00:18:07.76\00:18:10.02 Yes, and actually a dermatologist, an allergist 00:18:10.05\00:18:13.50 can actually do some very specific testing. 00:18:13.53\00:18:16.17 With all those little pricking you with all... 00:18:16.20\00:18:18.39 There is a variety of different ways of testing for allergens. 00:18:18.42\00:18:21.10 It's really one of the tried and true mechanisms 00:18:21.13\00:18:23.61 is the one that you're not all enamored with 00:18:23.64\00:18:25.75 which is the skin testing mechanism. 00:18:25.78\00:18:27.34 Does that really hurt? It sounds like it hurts. 00:18:27.37\00:18:29.20 Well I mean, I've had allergy testing done, 00:18:29.23\00:18:32.02 and I don't recall it being a bad experience. 00:18:32.05\00:18:35.00 It was a while ago. 00:18:35.03\00:18:36.40 I didn't try to have it done the next day. 00:18:36.43\00:18:38.80 But especially if you're having a problem! 00:18:38.83\00:18:41.16 Exactly! I mean, because here's the point... 00:18:41.20\00:18:43.08 Sure, someone says - I don't want to be pricked 00:18:43.12\00:18:44.97 In a bunch of places or I don't want to have a bunch of 00:18:45.00\00:18:47.72 blood work done or I don't want to spend the money 00:18:47.75\00:18:49.37 to see an allergist or dermatologist, 00:18:49.40\00:18:51.49 but maybe I should stop and say something here 00:18:51.52\00:18:54.18 because allergist and dermatologist are 00:18:54.21\00:18:57.93 two excellent groups of specialists who deal with 00:18:57.96\00:19:00.48 these diseases and although an internal medicine specialist 00:19:00.51\00:19:04.93 like myself or a family practitioner or a GP... 00:19:04.96\00:19:09.29 they may be able to pin down the cause pretty obviously. 00:19:09.32\00:19:12.02 Maybe it's very straight forward, 00:19:12.05\00:19:13.45 they just started you on penicillin, 00:19:13.48\00:19:14.85 and you broke out in a rash. 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.25 You don't necessarily need to see an allergist for that. 00:19:16.28\00:19:19.32 But by the same token, those 2 specialties 00:19:19.35\00:19:22.18 come at the problem often from 00:19:22.21\00:19:23.59 a little bit different perspectives. 00:19:23.62\00:19:25.31 So if you've seen an allergist who hasn't nailed down 00:19:25.34\00:19:28.21 the problem, see a dermatologist or vice versa 00:19:28.24\00:19:31.00 The key is to try to find an answer to what is 00:19:31.03\00:19:33.26 causing the hives. 00:19:33.29\00:19:34.98 So once you diagnose it... is there another way, 00:19:35.01\00:19:36.85 I mean do you ever just take peoples food away 00:19:36.88\00:19:39.39 one at a time or something like that? 00:19:39.43\00:19:40.80 Well actually many times they will not be able 00:19:40.83\00:19:43.18 to diagnose the cause. 00:19:43.21\00:19:44.58 I'm not saying 99% of the time or 90% of the time, 00:19:44.61\00:19:48.04 many times they WILL diagnose it... 00:19:48.07\00:19:49.90 But oftentimes the cause of hives, especially chronic hives, 00:19:49.93\00:19:53.96 can be somewhat elusive... 00:19:53.99\00:19:55.39 And so THEN, we've got to say, 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.96 well what kind of strategies are we going to use 00:19:57.99\00:20:00.62 to try to see if we can find out what's causing this... 00:20:00.65\00:20:02.88 Because really, this can be a very miserable existence 00:20:02.91\00:20:05.07 for somebody to have chronic hives. 00:20:05.10\00:20:06.47 It can actually be caused from an autoimmune disease. 00:20:06.50\00:20:09.54 The body can be attacking this IgE receptor 00:20:09.57\00:20:14.41 triggering these immune responses, 00:20:14.44\00:20:18.14 so that actually can happen. 00:20:18.17\00:20:20.15 So, what do you do then? 00:20:20.18\00:20:22.46 I see here you have listed on the web site here 00:20:22.49\00:20:26.57 elimination diet. 00:20:26.60\00:20:29.65 Now elimination diet is on the web site not just for hives. 00:20:29.68\00:20:33.23 But it's on the web site because ... all kinds of things. 00:20:33.26\00:20:36.71 We use elimination diets when we're dealing with 00:20:36.74\00:20:40.38 difficult problems to diagnose what's triggering them 00:20:40.41\00:20:43.93 OR problems... usually they have some kind of 00:20:43.96\00:20:46.96 inflammatory or autoimmune component, 00:20:46.99\00:20:49.42 and we're trying to say... 00:20:49.45\00:20:51.29 "Look it, there's some evidence in the scientific literature 00:20:51.32\00:20:54.72 that foods may be common triggers of this condition. " 00:20:54.75\00:20:58.12 Maybe we're talking about rheumatoid arthritis. 00:20:58.15\00:21:00.49 Maybe it's asthma and maybe it's chronic hives, 00:21:00.52\00:21:05.01 and we're going to try an elimination diet to see if this 00:21:05.04\00:21:10.13 can cause an improvement in the symptoms. 00:21:10.16\00:21:11.90 If it DOES, then it's pointing us down the direction 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.52 to the foods that we've eliminated. 00:21:14.55\00:21:16.10 One of those foods or a number 00:21:16.13\00:21:17.50 of the foods being the triggering cause. 00:21:17.53\00:21:19.90 Okay so, do you have a way to through different foods 00:21:19.93\00:21:24.08 on this thing - do you start with your corn chips, 00:21:24.11\00:21:26.59 then go to your potato chips, then go to your whatever? 00:21:26.62\00:21:29.25 Well, if you did it that way, think about it... 00:21:29.28\00:21:32.20 If you went down one food at a time, 00:21:32.23\00:21:35.06 if you have a triggering response to more than one... 00:21:35.09\00:21:38.77 We're talking about a chronic problem. 00:21:38.80\00:21:40.17 We're not speaking about you get hives once a month. 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.99 That's different... We're talking about something 00:21:43.02\00:21:45.23 that's either autoimmune, something that's chronic, 00:21:45.26\00:21:47.52 something that you can't pin down. 00:21:47.55\00:21:49.60 Then we do one of these elimination diets, 00:21:49.63\00:21:51.81 and again, it is, as you've been pointing out, 00:21:51.84\00:21:53.73 it's something that I recommend people do 00:21:53.76\00:21:55.39 under the guidance of a physician because, 00:21:55.42\00:21:57.51 let me just tell you, some of these problems 00:21:57.54\00:22:00.88 that we're talking about, if you're not being monitored 00:22:00.91\00:22:03.40 by a physician, you'll get into 00:22:03.43\00:22:04.87 big trouble if you're not moving in the right direction. 00:22:04.90\00:22:07.36 So let's go through some of them... 00:22:07.39\00:22:08.76 You have categories here... 00:22:08.79\00:22:10.16 You have level 1, level 2; items always permissible 00:22:10.19\00:22:14.23 What are the items always permissible? 00:22:14.26\00:22:17.36 Well basically, when we talk about items that are 00:22:17.39\00:22:19.96 always permissible, the elimination diet regimen 00:22:19.99\00:22:23.22 that I have on the Compass Health web site 00:22:23.25\00:22:26.18 is something that has worked for me in my work with patients. 00:22:26.21\00:22:29.94 There is evidence that supports it, 00:22:29.97\00:22:31.89 but it's also based on your clinical judgment. 00:22:31.92\00:22:35.31 So, what's on my diet here for always permissible, 00:22:35.34\00:22:38.63 for example - under grains, is simply millet. 00:22:38.66\00:22:41.36 Millet - no one is allergic to that. 00:22:41.39\00:22:42.89 Well, I wouldn't say that no one is allergic to it, 00:22:42.92\00:22:45.07 but it's a very infrequently used grain 00:22:45.10\00:22:49.02 in the human population. 00:22:49.05\00:22:50.69 Most people that I deal with have never heard of millet 00:22:50.72\00:22:53.71 as a food... they've seen it in the bird food maybe 00:22:53.74\00:22:56.27 after I point out to them what it is. 00:22:56.30\00:22:58.45 But millet is actually a very palatable grain. 00:22:58.48\00:23:01.34 It can be cooked like a hot cereal. 00:23:01.37\00:23:03.50 And one of the theories of allergy and intolerance, Don, 00:23:03.53\00:23:07.54 is if someone is predisposed to one of these conditions, 00:23:07.57\00:23:11.17 the things that they are repetitively exposed to 00:23:11.20\00:23:14.32 are things that they are more prone to develop an 00:23:14.35\00:23:16.79 allergic response to. 00:23:16.82\00:23:18.19 Okay, so you cut out the things they normally eat 00:23:18.22\00:23:20.40 in terms of grains like wheat. 00:23:20.43\00:23:22.05 Yeah, high on the list, the things that we always exclude 00:23:22.08\00:23:25.18 are the gluten-containing grains... 00:23:25.21\00:23:27.34 So that would be barley, rye, oat and wheat. 00:23:27.37\00:23:32.98 So those we exclude... it doesn't mean people 00:23:33.01\00:23:34.46 can never eat those again but during the elimination phase 00:23:34.49\00:23:37.53 we're trying to get them off multiple foods; 00:23:37.56\00:23:40.47 see if their symptoms improve. 00:23:40.50\00:23:42.07 If they DO improve, then we gradually start 00:23:42.10\00:23:44.39 adding foods back. 00:23:44.42\00:23:45.79 If one of those foods triggers the problem, 00:23:45.82\00:23:48.19 whether it's the hives - You know what it is then. Yes 00:23:48.22\00:23:50.22 So then on level 2 you have down here 00:23:50.25\00:23:51.93 would be corn and rice. 00:23:51.96\00:23:53.39 Yes, level 2 are things that we'll add back sooner. 00:23:53.42\00:23:58.87 So in other words, rice in particular tends to be 00:23:58.90\00:24:02.53 a less allergenic grain in our culture in the Western culture. 00:24:02.56\00:24:07.85 It may not be true in Asia. 00:24:07.88\00:24:09.63 I haven't worked there so I can't tell you that. 00:24:09.66\00:24:12.04 Then the next category you have nuts and seeds and legumes. 00:24:12.07\00:24:15.93 Yeah, the nuts and seeds... 00:24:15.96\00:24:17.58 Nut, in general, are fairly allergenic, 00:24:17.61\00:24:20.41 and so you'll notice here, 00:24:20.44\00:24:21.81 ALL nuts are excluded; you don't add those back. 00:24:21.84\00:24:25.38 We're including peanuts in that as well, 00:24:25.41\00:24:27.65 although it's a legume. 00:24:27.68\00:24:29.05 You'll also notice that with the other legumes besides soy, 00:24:29.08\00:24:32.76 soy we exclude completely in all these regimens. 00:24:32.79\00:24:36.35 If we're not doing a strict as an elimination diet, 00:24:36.38\00:24:39.19 we may allow other legumes. 00:24:39.22\00:24:40.59 So it's garbanzo beans or lima beans, lentils, 00:24:40.62\00:24:44.41 we may allow those in a less strict elimination diet program. 00:24:44.44\00:24:48.00 And some of these, it can really cause problems. 00:24:48.03\00:24:50.17 I heard about a young girl who just was exposed to a little bit 00:24:50.20\00:24:53.51 of peanuts and with a more severe problem than hives 00:24:53.54\00:24:58.91 I think she actually died from this. 00:24:58.94\00:25:00.31 Yeah, she had an anaphylactic reaction. 00:25:00.34\00:25:01.94 It got a lot of media press some time ago. 00:25:01.97\00:25:04.91 But it's exactly true, that's how serious these things are. 00:25:04.94\00:25:08.17 So we're not recommending that you challenge yourself 00:25:08.20\00:25:12.10 with foods that you've been avoiding, 00:25:12.13\00:25:13.51 especially if you have a serious 00:25:13.54\00:25:15.19 or life-threatening allergic problem. 00:25:15.22\00:25:16.96 So you have other things listed, we can't go through them all; 00:25:17.00\00:25:19.75 other animal products, dairy and eggs, fruits, vegetables, 00:25:19.78\00:25:22.97 and you have them in different columns. 00:25:23.00\00:25:24.40 A category... level 1, level 2. 00:25:24.43\00:25:26.57 I guess level 1 were things that you always should avoid. 00:25:26.60\00:25:29.83 Well at least if you're doing a kind of elimination diet 00:25:29.86\00:25:33.21 strategy that I'm recommending. 00:25:33.24\00:25:35.10 And then water and then OTHER THINGS! 00:25:35.13\00:25:37.76 On that level 1, other, you have chocolate, yeast, 00:25:37.79\00:25:40.25 alcohol, all kinds of different things. 00:25:40.28\00:25:41.65 Well since you mentioned water, 00:25:41.68\00:25:43.05 you know, we need to let everyone know that 00:25:43.08\00:25:44.45 we're actually not telling you you can't drink water, 00:25:44.48\00:25:47.19 but it's toxins that can be in water. 00:25:47.22\00:25:51.36 Other poisons and I use that term somewhat broadly, 00:25:51.39\00:25:55.84 but it's true, there are many compounds that get into 00:25:55.87\00:25:58.18 our water, whether it's the products of chlorination 00:25:58.21\00:26:02.11 combining with other compounds in the water 00:26:02.14\00:26:04.49 or traces of pesticides and things. 00:26:04.52\00:26:06.64 So the message, distilled water with charcoal filtration 00:26:06.67\00:26:10.07 is probably the single best option if we're dealing 00:26:10.10\00:26:13.40 with these regimens. 00:26:13.43\00:26:14.80 And then you have other tests there on the site 00:26:14.83\00:26:17.41 that you can go to that are like an ANA blood test, 00:26:17.44\00:26:20.37 and different types of blood tests that if all that 00:26:20.40\00:26:24.38 elimination doesn't work, you can look at some other things. 00:26:24.41\00:26:26.89 That's right, sometimes the reason why we're speaking 00:26:26.92\00:26:29.37 especially in this show about hives, 00:26:29.40\00:26:32.11 sometimes people have hives; 00:26:32.14\00:26:33.51 they have autoimmune diseases or autoimmune conditions 00:26:33.54\00:26:36.67 ANA is a test that most people think of in association 00:26:36.70\00:26:39.28 with lupus but it is something that can give us 00:26:39.31\00:26:42.40 insight into autoimmune process. 00:26:42.43\00:26:44.60 Can stress cause hives? 00:26:44.63\00:26:46.00 You know, I think a lot of people would say "yes" 00:26:46.03\00:26:49.06 You know, we've spoken about cholinergic urticaria, 00:26:49.09\00:26:52.05 I mean the name would even suggest that it does that, 00:26:52.08\00:26:56.37 but I have to be honest with you, 00:26:56.40\00:26:57.84 I have never seen a person, in my experience, 00:26:57.87\00:27:00.82 who had hives caused by stress. 00:27:00.85\00:27:04.21 All these different things, we discover what it is, 00:27:04.24\00:27:06.45 we take it away. 00:27:06.48\00:27:07.85 Any spiritual insights into hives? 00:27:07.88\00:27:09.48 I know you're a Christian clinician. 00:27:09.51\00:27:11.16 Well you know, I think it's interesting that you mention 00:27:11.19\00:27:13.47 taking things away sometimes would be a blessing. 00:27:13.50\00:27:15.89 You know, many times we think, in Christ we're free, 00:27:15.92\00:27:19.34 we're in liberty... Paul speaks about that experience. 00:27:19.37\00:27:22.02 But at the same time, God sometimes asks us to 00:27:22.05\00:27:24.80 give up things that are only hurting us. 00:27:24.83\00:27:26.91 I think it's a good principle to keep in mind. 00:27:26.94\00:27:29.08 Thank you, Dr. DeRose, for dedicating your life to... 00:27:29.11\00:27:32.06 You know many physicians are just day-in-day-out seeing 00:27:32.09\00:27:35.80 patients and the word doctor means teacher 00:27:35.83\00:27:38.17 and you're taking that seriously too. 00:27:38.20\00:27:39.63 You are teaching lots of different 00:27:39.66\00:27:41.21 groups - we appreciate that. 00:27:41.24\00:27:42.61 We appreciate the web site compasshealth. net 00:27:42.64\00:27:44.93 and what you're doing in your ministry. Thanks so much. 00:27:44.96\00:27:46.99 Thank you for joining us on "Health for a Lifetime" 00:27:47.89\00:27:49.94 Go to the web site compasshealth. net 00:27:49.97\00:27:51.64 You can look more closely. 00:27:51.67\00:27:53.08 We hope, as a result, you have Health that lasts for a Lifetime 00:27:53.12\00:27:55.16
