Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:49.20\00:00:50.51 I'm your host Don Mackintosh. 00:00:50.54\00:00:51.99 We're glad you've joined us today out of your busy schedule. 00:00:52.02\00:00:55.07 There's a big problem in America called hypothyroidism and to 00:00:55.10\00:00:59.22 talk with us about this today is Dr. David DeRose. 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.96 Dr. DeRose is from Oklahoma. 00:01:01.99\00:01:04.02 He has a ministry that couples both ministry's spiritual 00:01:04.06\00:01:08.70 aspects and actual treatment of physical conditions called 00:01:08.73\00:01:13.34 compasshealth. net 00:01:13.37\00:01:14.84 Dr. DeRose is both board certified in internal medicine 00:01:14.87\00:01:20.97 and preventive medicine. 00:01:21.00\00:01:22.06 He spent his life looking at natural and also medical 00:01:22.10\00:01:26.28 approaches to many of the diseases. 00:01:26.31\00:01:28.15 But also you're interested in the spiritual aspects too. 00:01:28.18\00:01:30.53 No question, I mean, the Lord got my attention early in my 00:01:30.56\00:01:35.63 life as a college student. 00:01:35.67\00:01:37.45 When He turned my life around He really opened my mind up 00:01:37.49\00:01:42.97 to caring for my own health. 00:01:43.01\00:01:45.26 I was not a very healthy person. 00:01:45.29\00:01:47.47 I didn't have a good level of health. 00:01:47.51\00:01:50.16 It wasn't like I was in the hospital a lot but I had plenty 00:01:50.20\00:01:53.07 of problems even as a relatively young person. 00:01:53.11\00:01:55.96 The Lord ministered to my life and He's given me the privilege 00:01:55.99\00:02:00.04 of ministering to many people through medical practice. 00:02:00.07\00:02:03.09 This venture of compasshealth. net 00:02:03.13\00:02:05.80 that puts your whole family together. 00:02:05.84\00:02:08.48 You're all involved in ministry. 00:02:08.51\00:02:09.83 I think your wife is a physician, is that correct? 00:02:09.87\00:02:12.02 My wife is a physician. 00:02:12.05\00:02:13.02 She's actually the business manager of the company. 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.66 So she's more behind the scenes. 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.79 CompassHealth takes on a number of evangelistic projects, 00:02:17.83\00:02:21.50 at least one major overseas project each year. 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.45 That's part of what we do. 00:02:25.48\00:02:26.81 We do that as a family. 00:02:26.84\00:02:28.10 That's what we've done the last couple of years. 00:02:28.14\00:02:30.80 Wonderful! 00:02:30.83\00:02:31.92 Today we're going to talk about hypothyroidism. 00:02:31.96\00:02:34.08 Some of the things we talked about you'll probably have up 00:02:34.11\00:02:36.69 on your website. 00:02:36.72\00:02:37.81 If people go to compasshealth. net 00:02:37.84\00:02:40.72 they'll be able to read more details about what we're 00:02:40.75\00:02:44.04 covering. 00:02:44.08\00:02:45.05 What is hypothyroidism and how big a problem is it? 00:02:45.06\00:02:48.22 Don, it's a huge problem. 00:02:48.26\00:02:49.99 Hypothyroidism effects some 2% of women across the board 00:02:50.03\00:02:55.04 in our country. 00:02:55.08\00:02:56.20 Only about a 10th as many men but once we get to be over 60 00:02:56.24\00:02:59.55 those figures jump dramatically about 6% of women and 2% of men. 00:02:59.59\00:03:04.01 So we're talking about a large problem. 00:03:04.04\00:03:06.92 The other part of your question what is it, hypothyroidism 00:03:06.96\00:03:10.97 is really all that the term means. 00:03:11.00\00:03:12.86 Hypo means low, thyroid has to do with production of a hormone 00:03:12.90\00:03:17.58 from this gland at the base of our necks. 00:03:17.62\00:03:19.22 So it's low production of an important metabolic hormone 00:03:19.25\00:03:23.90 known as thyroid hormone. 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.25 Thyroid hormone is kind of like maestro - it coordinates 00:03:25.29\00:03:28.81 a lot of different things. 00:03:28.84\00:03:29.81 That's right. 00:03:29.82\00:03:30.79 If your thyroid hormone function is low it is going to tend to 00:03:30.80\00:03:33.92 slow down a variety of functions in your body. 00:03:33.95\00:03:37.61 Your pulse can be slower, your energy level can be lower, 00:03:37.64\00:03:40.95 you can tend toward depression, you can be frankly depressed, 00:03:40.99\00:03:44.26 constipation, all these things can go along with 00:03:44.30\00:03:46.90 low thyroid functions. 00:03:46.94\00:03:48.29 So what's this hoarseness and thickening of the tongue? 00:03:48.33\00:03:50.30 Is that true? 00:03:50.33\00:03:52.16 Yes, actually hoarseness can be vocal changes. 00:03:52.19\00:03:54.95 There can actually be in bad hypothyroidism. 00:03:54.98\00:03:57.67 There can be a build up in the tissues, a thickening 00:03:57.70\00:04:02.78 of the tongue as well as changes in the skin of the legs. 00:04:02.82\00:04:06.23 A number of things can occur in a condition called myxedema. 00:04:06.26\00:04:09.64 Hair loss? 00:04:09.67\00:04:10.97 Hair loss, yes. 00:04:11.00\00:04:13.12 And you look at my head, Don, and you laugh 00:04:13.15\00:04:16.13 But the hair loss that you get is a classic pattern. 00:04:16.17\00:04:19.82 You tend to loose the outer portion of your eyebrows. 00:04:19.85\00:04:23.47 You're exactly right. 00:04:23.50\00:04:29.35 If a woman, remember it's more common in women about 10 times 00:04:29.39\00:04:33.54 more common in younger women than younger men, so if a woman 00:04:33.58\00:04:37.17 is noticing lot's of hair coming out this could be a sign of 00:04:37.21\00:04:40.77 hypothyroidism. 00:04:40.81\00:04:41.84 Usually going along with lower energy level. 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.52 Weight gain, huge issue in our country. 00:04:44.55\00:04:47.50 Many people have weight problems. 00:04:47.54\00:04:49.27 Part of their problem is a thyroid problem and many times 00:04:49.31\00:04:52.07 it's undiagnosed. 00:04:52.10\00:04:53.10 Is it reversible? 00:04:53.14\00:04:54.11 Well, it's a good question. 00:04:54.12\00:04:56.30 The answer is one of those classic medical answers 00:04:56.34\00:04:59.98 "It depends. " 00:05:00.02\00:05:01.63 It depends on what? 00:05:01.66\00:05:03.26 It really depends on what the cause of the hypothyroidism is. 00:05:03.29\00:05:06.87 There are a variety of things that cause hypothyroidism. 00:05:06.90\00:05:10.59 The single most common cause of hypothyroidism in children 00:05:10.63\00:05:14.05 over 8 and all the way into adulthood is something called 00:05:14.09\00:05:17.48 Hoshimoto's Thyroiditis. 00:05:17.51\00:05:19.93 Hoshimoto's Thyroiditis is an autoimmune destruction of the 00:05:19.96\00:05:28.91 thyroid gland. 00:05:28.94\00:05:29.91 So the body is attacking this gland, it's being wiped out. 00:05:29.92\00:05:34.16 That is basically an irreversible scenario. 00:05:34.20\00:05:37.11 It doesn't mean that you have zero thyroid function the minute 00:05:37.14\00:05:41.12 it's diagnosed, but once the body is attacking the thyroid 00:05:41.15\00:05:45.09 you're not typically going to regain that function. 00:05:45.13\00:05:48.17 But there are many other causes of hypothyroidism 00:05:48.21\00:05:51.22 caused by a virus, for example. 00:05:51.25\00:05:53.13 Or following a viral illness. 00:05:53.17\00:05:54.98 After pregnancy, classic cause of hypothyroidism, 00:05:55.02\00:05:59.08 postpartum hypothyroidism is what we call it. 00:05:59.11\00:06:03.14 Many times that's fully reversible. 00:06:03.18\00:06:06.18 So, you've terrified some of us. 00:06:06.21\00:06:09.14 Just with the name Hoshimoto's? - laughter - 00:06:09.18\00:06:12.73 No, with hypothyroidism and seeing the dangers. 00:06:12.76\00:06:15.72 How can I tell if my thyroid then is normal? 00:06:15.76\00:06:19.05 If you read books in the health food store, 00:06:19.09\00:06:22.35 they'll tell you all kinds of things. 00:06:22.38\00:06:23.93 Same with the internet. 00:06:23.96\00:06:25.11 I believe the Lord's way of dealing with thyroid control 00:06:25.14\00:06:31.68 in our body is the best way to get an insight into how 00:06:31.71\00:06:35.85 our thyroid is doing. 00:06:35.89\00:06:37.05 Ok, that's good, but how do I tell if it's normal? 00:06:37.09\00:06:39.18 And then I want to talk about that. 00:06:39.22\00:06:40.60 Well, I'm going to answer your question by telling you 00:06:40.64\00:06:43.14 how it works. 00:06:43.17\00:06:44.16 The thyroid is not just an autonomously functioning organ. 00:06:44.19\00:06:50.03 It has control. 00:06:50.07\00:06:51.04 The Lord has made us so there are other parts of our body 00:06:51.05\00:06:54.31 to talk to our thyroid. 00:06:54.34\00:06:55.87 One of those parts of the body is called the pituitary gland 00:06:55.90\00:07:01.18 laying at the base of our brain. 00:07:01.22\00:07:02.35 I'd point to it but it... well right there in the middle... 00:07:02.38\00:07:06.23 you see the intersection. - laughter - 00:07:06.27\00:07:07.69 Right at the base of your brain and then above that 00:07:07.73\00:07:10.66 in the brain itself is the hypothalamus. 00:07:10.70\00:07:13.19 These regions of the body are monitoring thyroid function. 00:07:13.22\00:07:16.77 Now, Don, I know you're a parent. 00:07:16.80\00:07:19.12 Maybe I shouldn't ask you this on international TV but I'm 00:07:19.16\00:07:23.13 going to stick my neck out. 00:07:23.16\00:07:24.19 Do your children always come immediately 00:07:24.22\00:07:27.63 when you call for them? 00:07:27.66\00:07:28.92 Well, judging between mine and yours - yes - laughter - 00:07:28.96\00:07:33.81 No, no, they don't. 00:07:33.85\00:07:35.09 They may not have heard you the first time. 00:07:35.12\00:07:36.93 That's right! 00:07:36.97\00:07:38.18 So what do you do if your kids don't come when you first call? 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.37 I call them again. 00:07:40.40\00:07:42.21 Maybe a little bit louder. 00:07:42.25\00:07:43.24 Maybe, some. 00:07:43.27\00:07:45.15 That's what the pituitary does with your thyroid. 00:07:45.18\00:07:47.47 If the thyroid is not making enough hormone, it's failing 00:07:47.51\00:07:52.16 the pituitary calls out to the thyroid to work harder. 00:07:52.19\00:07:56.81 Have you ever heard your pituitary talking 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.66 to your thyroid? 00:07:58.69\00:07:59.66 If I did we'd have to do another program! 00:07:59.67\00:08:02.64 That's right! - laughter - 00:08:02.67\00:08:04.50 You're right it does not speak audibly. 00:08:04.54\00:08:08.59 The Lord has the pituitary send a chemical message. 00:08:08.63\00:08:11.40 That chemical message is called TSH. 00:08:11.44\00:08:14.04 If the TSH level is normal that means the pituitary is telling 00:08:14.08\00:08:19.23 the thyroid you're doing a good job, keep going, 00:08:19.26\00:08:21.35 keep up the good work. 00:08:21.38\00:08:22.49 But if it's not listening, not obeying, it's not producing the 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.94 thyroid it needs to, the pituitary starts speaking louder 00:08:25.98\00:08:29.33 THYROID WORK HARDER! 00:08:29.37\00:08:31.62 and the TSH level keeps going up. 00:08:31.66\00:08:35.64 Thyroid Stimulating Hormones - TSH 00:08:35.67\00:08:39.58 So what we want to do if we want to see if the thyroid is failing 00:08:39.62\00:08:43.15 we do a blood test. 00:08:43.19\00:08:44.58 We see what the body says is going on with itself. 00:08:44.61\00:08:48.49 If that TSH level is elevated that's going to indicate 00:08:48.53\00:08:52.37 thyroid failure or thyroid sluggishness. 00:08:52.41\00:08:55.88 So if you have any question or any of these signs or symptoms 00:08:55.91\00:08:58.73 that you talked about just a simple blood test can 00:08:58.76\00:09:01.02 tell you where you are? 00:09:01.05\00:09:02.07 It can make a huge difference. 00:09:02.11\00:09:03.17 I got to tell you though, Don, because of this very 00:09:03.21\00:09:07.42 exquisite control, if your pituitary is failing 00:09:07.46\00:09:11.60 and isn't making TSH, that will also cause your thyroid 00:09:11.64\00:09:15.03 to be sluggish. 00:09:15.07\00:09:16.31 The problem is not with the thyroid now, the problem is 00:09:16.35\00:09:19.20 with the pituitary. 00:09:19.24\00:09:20.21 So you can't just draw TSH level necessarily and assume 00:09:20.22\00:09:24.31 everything but that's the best indicator. 00:09:24.35\00:09:27.09 You got to have a doctor to order the test anyway. 00:09:27.12\00:09:30.28 So work with your doctor if you've got a question. 00:09:30.32\00:09:33.23 Get the TSH test and then they can work with you 00:09:33.27\00:09:36.15 on interpreting. 00:09:36.18\00:09:37.15 You have a list probably on your website compasshealth. net 00:09:37.16\00:09:39.99 that goes through all the causes: Hoshimoto's, painful 00:09:40.03\00:09:43.97 sub acute Thyroiditis, painless sporadic Thyroiditis, 00:09:44.01\00:09:47.33 all of these different things where you can look into. 00:09:47.37\00:09:50.66 That's right. 00:09:50.70\00:09:51.67 There's a variety of different causes of hypothyroidism 00:09:51.68\00:09:53.73 and we point out there on the website how reversible they are 00:09:53.77\00:09:57.55 by nature of the cause. 00:09:57.59\00:10:01.27 So you've talked about how we can diagnose TSH and talked 00:10:01.30\00:10:05.77 about how that can also be indicative a problem 00:10:05.81\00:10:10.04 with the pituitary. 00:10:10.08\00:10:11.05 But how high does this TSH need to be before someone gets 00:10:11.06\00:10:17.28 concerned? 00:10:17.32\00:10:18.29 What are the normal's? 00:10:18.30\00:10:19.81 Well, you know that is one of the challenges that we have. 00:10:19.84\00:10:22.84 I could show you study after study, I have some of the 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.81 references on the website, but different people are actually 00:10:25.84\00:10:29.12 looking at different cut offs. 00:10:29.16\00:10:31.94 But let me tell you what works for me. 00:10:31.98\00:10:35.11 The standard units that are reported are what we call 00:10:35.15\00:10:38.76 micro units per liter - MU/L. 00:10:38.79\00:10:42.73 Those are the units that we use here in our country. 00:10:42.76\00:10:45.87 Don, here's what the challenge is. 00:10:45.91\00:10:48.12 If you look at the laboratory normal range it's going to 00:10:48.16\00:10:52.15 usually be up to about 5, maybe 4.5, maybe 5.0, 00:10:52.18\00:10:56.80 maybe 5.5. 00:10:56.83\00:10:57.80 But a lot of thyroid specialists are starting to say, 00:10:57.81\00:11:01.45 "Well, you know what, a lot of people are hypothyroid 00:11:01.49\00:11:05.06 and by just looking at what the average is may be misleading us. 00:11:05.10\00:11:10.51 An optimal TSH level may be more like 2 or below. 00:11:10.55\00:11:15.12 Now you don't want to get too low because then that would 00:11:15.16\00:11:17.56 indicate you are hyperthyroid. 00:11:17.59\00:11:20.01 Your TSH levels get very low because your body - 00:11:20.05\00:11:22.94 your pituitary is afraid to say anything - 00:11:22.97\00:11:24.78 any little word it gives to the thyroid it starts producing 00:11:24.81\00:11:27.49 more hormones. 00:11:27.53\00:11:28.50 Just kind of dramatizing it a little bit there. 00:11:28.51\00:11:32.07 But what the point is lower TSH levels actually maybe 00:11:32.11\00:11:38.33 somewhat better. 00:11:38.36\00:11:39.43 When you get too high a level then you start getting into 00:11:39.47\00:11:42.09 risk of osteoporosis and heart rhythm problems. 00:11:42.12\00:11:44.61 So people shouldn't just willy-nilly be taking thyroid 00:11:44.64\00:11:48.32 hormone just because their wife has it the husband 00:11:48.35\00:11:52.00 shouldn't take some to help him loose weight. 00:11:52.03\00:11:53.86 Ok. 00:11:53.90\00:11:55.33 We're talking about Hypothyroidism. 00:11:55.37\00:11:58.62 But some people can have too high a thyroid as well, 00:11:58.66\00:12:02.50 isn't that true? 00:12:02.54\00:12:03.88 That's right, that's Hyperthyroidism. 00:12:03.91\00:12:06.80 Hyper and Hypo - you're exactly right. 00:12:06.83\00:12:09.65 It's not as big a problem in our country as far as the numbers 00:12:09.68\00:12:13.22 effected but it's still a significant problem 00:12:13.26\00:12:15.51 and it is something to be kept in mind. 00:12:15.54\00:12:17.86 If it's true that the thyroid can be knocked out 00:12:17.90\00:12:22.59 a lot of people take like Synthroid and or these 00:12:22.62\00:12:25.70 different things you're not advocating in this program 00:12:25.74\00:12:29.03 that they go off that. 00:12:29.07\00:12:30.35 There's no way really to go off it once that happens, 00:12:30.38\00:12:32.30 is that right or wrong? 00:12:32.33\00:12:33.30 Is it reversible in other words? 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.61 Many of the causes are. 00:12:35.65\00:12:37.38 Hoshimoto's is the most common cause, is not reversible. 00:12:37.41\00:12:41.95 Those people will need to be on thyroid replacement. 00:12:41.98\00:12:46.48 Are there some exceptions? 00:12:46.52\00:12:48.00 Perhaps early in the course of the condition - yes, but I'll 00:12:48.04\00:12:51.88 tell you in my experience if you have an autoimmune type of 00:12:51.91\00:12:55.50 thyroid problem you're going to need the thyroid hormone 00:12:55.53\00:12:59.08 replacement. 00:12:59.12\00:13:00.10 To me that is not a drug, it's replacing a natural body hormone 00:13:00.13\00:13:03.56 that the Lord designed for you to have but you're not making. 00:13:03.59\00:13:07.88 But, come back to the train of thought we had a moment ago, 00:13:07.92\00:13:12.17 as far as what's the normal range? 00:13:12.21\00:13:13.88 Any doctor, if you get above 10 micro units per liter, they're 00:13:13.92\00:13:20.55 going to tell you that you're hypothyroid. 00:13:20.59\00:13:22.76 5 to 10 range they might say it's a little gray but most 00:13:22.80\00:13:26.48 doctors it seems are leaning if it's above 5 to 10 range 00:13:26.52\00:13:29.94 even if other indicators of thyroid in the blood, if they 00:13:29.98\00:13:33.37 measure the free thyroid in your blood - we can do 00:13:33.41\00:13:36.04 that now - if that's normal they're going to say 00:13:36.07\00:13:38.67 you have subclinical hypothyroidism. 00:13:38.70\00:13:41.57 Maybe you don't have a full-blown disease, maybe the 00:13:41.60\00:13:44.45 blood levels are ok of the thyroid hormone but the brain 00:13:44.49\00:13:47.27 and the pituitary are saying the thyroid is not working right. 00:13:47.30\00:13:50.30 Many of these people, the evidence is suggesting, they're 00:13:50.33\00:13:53.10 benefited by treatment as far as energy level, cholesterol 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.70 level tends to come down because when you're hypothyroid 00:13:55.73\00:13:58.49 cholesterol can rise and help the blood pressure, a number 00:13:58.53\00:14:01.26 of things can be related to hypothyroidism. 00:14:01.29\00:14:03.36 So if it's equal or above 10 your doctor is going to say...? 00:14:03.39\00:14:07.64 Yes, that's very clear cut. 00:14:07.68\00:14:10.34 Above 5 many doctors will treat and the evidence suggests that 00:14:10.37\00:14:14.27 that is probably prudent. 00:14:14.30\00:14:16.45 That's the way things seem to be moving at least from 00:14:16.49\00:14:18.56 my reading of the literature. 00:14:18.59\00:14:19.81 So if it's on the high side of normal and you're gaining 00:14:19.85\00:14:22.17 weight and fatigued you're going to benefit? 00:14:22.21\00:14:25.16 Usually we'll find that people TSH levels 6, 7, they benefit 00:14:25.20\00:14:30.73 by getting their TSH levels down 4, 3, 2, by taking some 00:14:30.77\00:14:35.69 T4 replacement whether it's the Synthroid or Levoxyl 00:14:35.73\00:14:40.54 or some other form of what we call L-thyroxine. 00:14:40.57\00:14:43.51 My wife is expecting our third child right now and you've been 00:14:43.54\00:14:47.95 through a number yourself. 00:14:47.99\00:14:49.92 Let's say someone has just had a baby and they got the 00:14:49.96\00:14:53.31 thyroid problems that come after having a baby. 00:14:53.35\00:14:55.85 What should they do? 00:14:55.89\00:14:56.92 Definitely they want to have it diagnosed first. 00:14:56.96\00:14:59.47 Don't just jump to a conclusion if you're feeling fatigued 00:14:59.50\00:15:02.61 that it's from the thyroid because there's also that 00:15:02.64\00:15:04.63 condition postpartum depression. 00:15:04.66\00:15:06.18 It's very important that if a woman after pregnancy is 00:15:06.22\00:15:11.71 feeling very low energy level that she has things evaluated. 00:15:11.74\00:15:14.34 If she is hypothyroid many times what happens, 00:15:14.37\00:15:17.84 I've seen this before. 00:15:17.87\00:15:19.33 I remember one woman very vividly some years ago 00:15:19.36\00:15:22.15 came into my office. 00:15:22.19\00:15:23.27 She had postpartum hypothyroidism. 00:15:23.30\00:15:25.86 She was started on thyroid and she was never taken off it. 00:15:25.89\00:15:29.08 She saw me probably 20-25 years later. 00:15:29.12\00:15:30.97 We were able to gradually taper her off the thyroid. 00:15:31.01\00:15:34.52 And her thyroid was fine then. 00:15:34.55\00:15:36.02 She didn't need to stay on the thyroid replacement. 00:15:36.05\00:15:38.72 It was a momentary thing. 00:15:38.75\00:15:41.09 It was short-term needing help. 00:15:41.12\00:15:43.07 Now some people with postpartum Thyroiditis they will have 00:15:43.11\00:15:46.64 irreversible, long-term thyroid problems. 00:15:46.67\00:15:48.88 We're talking with Dr. David DeRose. 00:15:48.91\00:15:51.17 He's a physician from southern Oklahoma. 00:15:51.20\00:15:53.62 He has a ministry called compasshealth. net 00:15:53.65\00:15:58.65 We hope that it's given you some direction so far 00:15:58.69\00:16:02.00 with hypothyroidism. 00:16:02.03\00:16:03.23 We hope that you join us when we come back 00:16:03.26\00:16:05.27 to talk a little bit more about this important subject. 00:16:05.31\00:16:07.47 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:16:09.47\00:16:11.45 shed a few pounds? 00:16:11.48\00:16:12.46 Have you been on a diet for most of your life? 00:16:12.49\00:16:14.97 But not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:16:15.00\00:16:17.90 If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then we 00:16:17.93\00:16:21.48 have a solution for you that works. 00:16:21.51\00:16:23.60 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:16:23.63\00:16:26.55 have written a marvelous booklet called, 00:16:26.58\00:16:28.69 Reversing Obesity Naturally, and we'd like to send it to you 00:16:28.72\00:16:32.28 free of charge. 00:16:32.31\00:16:33.51 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:16:33.54\00:16:36.56 by thousands who are able to eat more 00:16:36.59\00:16:38.64 and loose weight permanently 00:16:38.67\00:16:40.32 without feeling guilty or hungry through lifestyle medicine. 00:16:40.35\00:16:43.96 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:16:43.99\00:16:47.65 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach to eating, 00:16:47.68\00:16:51.11 nutrition, and lifestyle changes that can help you prevent 00:16:51.14\00:16:54.27 heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. 00:16:54.30\00:16:57.01 Call or write today for your free copy: 00:16:57.04\00:16:59.22 Welcome back. 00:17:10.39\00:17:11.36 We've been talking with Dr. David DeRose. 00:17:11.37\00:17:12.73 We've been talking about your thyroid 00:17:12.76\00:17:14.81 That little gland right underneath your Adam's apple. 00:17:14.84\00:17:18.18 Of course, Dr. DeRose, my name is Mackintosh so maybe we can 00:17:18.21\00:17:22.14 say, "It's right underneath your Mackintosh!" 00:17:22.17\00:17:24.31 Ok, well, however you want to remember it, that's where it is. 00:17:24.34\00:17:27.08 You have a ministry called CompassHealth. 00:17:27.11\00:17:29.76 Many things we're talking about are on that website 00:17:29.79\00:17:32.62 compasshealth. net. 00:17:32.65\00:17:34.35 This is very useful to us because as we've said thyroid 00:17:34.38\00:17:39.80 problems afflict a large amount of women and to a lesser extent 00:17:39.83\00:17:44.43 men but more after they get over the age of 60. 00:17:44.46\00:17:46.61 We've talked about how it can crop up after a pregnancy 00:17:46.64\00:17:50.60 but what about the patient that has cancer and develops 00:17:50.63\00:17:54.78 thyroid problems? 00:17:54.81\00:17:55.91 The most classic form of cancer that causes thyroid problems is 00:17:55.94\00:18:00.61 thyroid cancer. 00:18:00.64\00:18:01.93 Typically the treatment for thyroid cancer involves 00:18:01.96\00:18:06.50 total destruction of all thyroid tissue - 00:18:06.53\00:18:10.44 first with surgery. 00:18:10.47\00:18:13.87 If surgery cannot remove all the thyroid tissue they'll give 00:18:13.90\00:18:18.03 a radio active iodine following the surgery that will destroy 00:18:18.06\00:18:22.72 any remaining thyroid tissue. 00:18:22.75\00:18:24.44 Thyroid cancer, by the way, is one of the very 00:18:24.47\00:18:27.45 treatable cancers. 00:18:27.48\00:18:28.48 Most types of thyroid cancers are very treatable and do not 00:18:28.51\00:18:31.65 kill many times. 00:18:31.68\00:18:33.32 If you had to choose a cancer thyroid cancer is one 00:18:33.35\00:18:37.23 of the better ones to choose. 00:18:37.26\00:18:38.85 But what I think you're getting at in the question is what 00:18:38.88\00:18:42.72 happens after you've had that thyroid wiped out. 00:18:42.75\00:18:45.32 Is that correct? 00:18:45.35\00:18:46.36 Right. 00:18:46.39\00:18:47.36 Just one thing before, and I know this is maybe not your 00:18:47.37\00:18:49.06 area of specialty, when should you be concerned and how 00:18:49.09\00:18:52.21 could someone know they have thyroid cancer? 00:18:52.24\00:18:53.92 All those same signs and symptoms are kind of going 00:18:53.95\00:18:56.23 haywire or what? 00:18:56.26\00:18:57.25 No, usually the first sign of thyroid cancer is a 00:18:57.28\00:19:01.48 growth in the neck. 00:19:01.51\00:19:02.88 Ok, so it's an enlarging of that gland. 00:19:02.91\00:19:05.25 Yes, it typically starts with just a nodule, or a lump, 00:19:05.28\00:19:09.29 or a bump in the gland. 00:19:09.32\00:19:10.59 Sometimes people will notice it on their own, other times 00:19:10.62\00:19:14.15 they won't. 00:19:14.18\00:19:15.33 I had a woman call me just a few weeks ago. 00:19:15.36\00:19:21.04 She went to one of these free ultrasound screenings. 00:19:21.07\00:19:26.17 As they were screening her carotid arteries, and the 00:19:26.20\00:19:29.02 ultrasound tech who was doing it actually looked at her thyroid 00:19:29.05\00:19:33.42 and saw some nodules there. 00:19:33.45\00:19:35.05 That was fortunate. 00:19:35.08\00:19:37.08 It is fortunate but the unfortunate thing is if you 00:19:37.11\00:19:40.26 screen enough people that way probably 30-50% us have nodules. 00:19:40.29\00:19:45.21 But she had some big nodules that were palpable. 00:19:45.24\00:19:47.93 They could be felt. 00:19:47.96\00:19:48.93 She just hadn't noticed them. 00:19:48.94\00:19:50.37 She ended up apparently having cancer. 00:19:50.40\00:19:52.84 So, yes, a lump in the neck, swollen lymph glands, if the 00:19:52.87\00:19:57.95 cancer is more advanced it's become infiltrated or spread 00:19:57.98\00:20:02.19 you may have changes in your voice, 00:20:02.22\00:20:04.19 and other things like that. 00:20:04.22\00:20:05.99 So all those can be indicators. 00:20:06.02\00:20:07.37 Let's say they've been diagnosed and then the thyroid has been 00:20:07.40\00:20:09.96 radiated or eradicated through surgery or radio active iodine 00:20:09.99\00:20:16.20 what do you want to say about their levels? 00:20:16.23\00:20:19.17 Well basically they're going to have zero 00:20:19.20\00:20:20.80 thyroid production capacity. 00:20:20.83\00:20:23.99 So they're going to have a life or death need to take 00:20:24.02\00:20:25.61 thyroid replacement. 00:20:25.64\00:20:26.89 It's a good question because it's a way of saying what is 00:20:26.92\00:20:30.75 the total thyroid need for anybody? 00:20:30.78\00:20:32.46 No thyroid function, someone with cancer, all their thyroid 00:20:32.49\00:20:36.73 tissue is gone. 00:20:36.76\00:20:37.73 The average adult, middle aged 100-150 micro grams per day. 00:20:37.74\00:20:46.24 That's going to be the replacement range. 00:20:46.27\00:20:48.99 As we get older, up in years, that drops to about half. 00:20:49.02\00:20:54.20 So 50-75 micro grams a day. 00:20:54.23\00:20:58.96 Then in young children and pregnant women the needs 00:20:58.99\00:21:03.07 are often higher, maybe 175-200 micro grams. 00:21:03.10\00:21:08.54 That's something to work with your doctor on. 00:21:08.57\00:21:10.47 Definitely! 00:21:10.50\00:21:11.47 They'll be monitoring the TSH to see what the pituitary is 00:21:11.48\00:21:14.44 saying about the amount of thyroid your taking. 00:21:14.47\00:21:16.20 Let's say I'm taking this thyroid replacement therapy, 00:21:16.23\00:21:21.55 some people say I should avoid certain foods 00:21:21.58\00:21:24.13 like soy or these other things. 00:21:24.16\00:21:25.88 Is there anything to that? 00:21:25.91\00:21:26.88 Well, there's no question that in soy products and in other 00:21:26.91\00:21:30.53 plant products there's some naturally occurring goitrogens. 00:21:30.56\00:21:34.54 Goitrogens - the same thing we call a goiter? 00:21:34.57\00:21:38.71 Yes it comes from the same term. 00:21:38.74\00:21:40.68 These compounds actually do have a mild adverse effect 00:21:40.71\00:21:47.75 on the thyroid. 00:21:47.78\00:21:49.02 But we've got to put that in perspective. 00:21:49.05\00:21:51.16 If you look at the foods that has some of these goitrogens 00:21:51.19\00:21:53.56 these are nutritional powerhouses - the soy foods, 00:21:53.59\00:21:56.82 cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower. 00:21:56.85\00:21:59.48 I can imagine there are some of our viewers saying, "Hey, great 00:21:59.51\00:22:03.43 I've been waiting for my excuse to not eat broccoli, soybeans, 00:22:03.46\00:22:08.43 or tofu. 00:22:08.46\00:22:09.87 But actually, here's the issue. 00:22:09.90\00:22:12.77 If you're on thyroid replacement that is not going to make a 00:22:12.80\00:22:17.97 whit of difference. 00:22:18.00\00:22:19.07 You're still going to have to take a pill. 00:22:19.10\00:22:22.09 The bigger concern when it comes to dietary things are some very 00:22:22.12\00:22:25.85 potent things that can be blocking thyroid function 00:22:25.88\00:22:28.74 and these are man made compounds. 00:22:28.77\00:22:30.66 Such as what? 00:22:30.69\00:22:32.85 Things that you'll find in herbicides and other toxins 00:22:32.88\00:22:37.65 that are in the environment. 00:22:37.68\00:22:38.71 And of course no one goes out and says, "I'm going to get 00:22:38.74\00:22:40.19 myself herbicide and toxins!" 00:22:40.22\00:22:41.70 Those are like occurring in fish. 00:22:41.73\00:22:45.37 The higher you go up in the food chain, and what we mean by that, 00:22:45.40\00:22:50.37 I know you know what we mean by it, but for those who are not 00:22:50.40\00:22:53.27 familiar with our description of this. 00:22:53.30\00:22:55.84 Basically low on the food chain is the sources... 00:22:55.87\00:23:00.35 plants 00:23:00.38\00:23:01.35 yes, the plant. 00:23:01.36\00:23:03.00 But I was going to make it a little more dramatic, 00:23:03.03\00:23:05.62 more colorful, but since you cut right to the chase 00:23:05.65\00:23:08.62 we'll just say the plants - the very simple things 00:23:08.65\00:23:11.27 the Lord created. 00:23:11.30\00:23:12.27 Then what eats those? 00:23:12.28\00:23:14.46 As you go up higher in the food chain you've got 00:23:14.49\00:23:15.82 the vegetarian animals and then higher up on the food chain 00:23:15.85\00:23:20.17 are the carnivorous animals, etcetera. 00:23:20.20\00:23:22.51 The higher you go up on the food chain the more 00:23:22.54\00:23:24.13 toxic and concentrated. 00:23:24.16\00:23:26.14 So the big fish, long living fish, these scavengers, 00:23:26.17\00:23:30.44 these kind of things can have higher toxin levels 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.54 they'll concentrate many of these compounds. 00:23:32.57\00:23:34.77 The one strategy is try to avoid animal products. 00:23:34.80\00:23:38.26 This is a much more important issue from my looking at the 00:23:38.29\00:23:41.25 data then trying to avoid soy or broccoli. 00:23:41.28\00:23:43.72 You're better off eating more soy and broccoli and less 00:23:43.75\00:23:46.59 milk, meat, eggs, and cheese. 00:23:46.62\00:23:48.02 So check where you are on the food chain is the big thing. 00:23:48.05\00:23:50.61 If you have any questions go to compasshealth. net and they have 00:23:50.64\00:23:53.99 a food chain there probably and you can see what's 00:23:54.02\00:23:56.34 important for you. 00:23:56.37\00:23:57.74 Let's say I'm already a vegetarian. 00:23:57.77\00:24:00.07 Is there anything else that I should do or not do? 00:24:00.10\00:24:04.99 Well, one of the things we're very concerned about are the 00:24:05.02\00:24:07.51 things that are finding their way into our water supply. 00:24:07.54\00:24:09.84 And the things that are put into plastics. 00:24:09.87\00:24:16.05 One of the classic cases - plastic is kept flexible even 00:24:16.08\00:24:21.01 if it's somewhat rigid by plasticizers. 00:24:21.04\00:24:23.80 These are compounds that are not part of the plastic itself. 00:24:23.83\00:24:27.95 In a sense they can leach into the food easily. 00:24:27.98\00:24:30.62 So if you are putting plastic material into your microwave 00:24:30.65\00:24:35.26 for example and microwaving plastic is not a good idea 00:24:35.29\00:24:39.30 because you're increasing the amount of these chemicals 00:24:39.33\00:24:42.60 that are getting into the food. 00:24:42.63\00:24:43.77 Styrofoam? 00:24:43.80\00:24:45.45 Styrofoam, I don't know. 00:24:45.48\00:24:47.45 That's a good question. 00:24:47.48\00:24:48.92 It's a plastic so don't put it on your plastic plate 00:24:48.95\00:24:51.74 and heat it up. 00:24:51.77\00:24:52.74 Or your plastic container. 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.66 I don't want to mention any brands. 00:24:55.69\00:25:00.02 I was avoiding trying to do that. 00:25:00.05\00:25:02.83 It's better to just put it on a glass plate. 00:25:02.86\00:25:07.50 Glass is the best - glass or other inert materials 00:25:07.53\00:25:10.30 for storing and for microwaving. 00:25:10.33\00:25:13.00 The other place where we find these toxins 00:25:13.03\00:25:15.94 is in our water supply. 00:25:15.97\00:25:17.38 I encourage people to do something with their water 00:25:17.41\00:25:20.78 whether it's reverse osmosis or distillation plus 00:25:20.81\00:25:25.06 charcoal filtration - don't forget that. 00:25:25.09\00:25:27.46 In other words water supply can have a lot of these chemicals 00:25:27.49\00:25:34.82 which can cause problems with the thyroid. 00:25:34.85\00:25:37.25 The reason I make the point with distillation is because 00:25:37.28\00:25:42.77 many of these compounds are volatile. 00:25:42.80\00:25:46.06 That means if you boil the water, that's what's being done 00:25:46.09\00:25:48.41 in distillation, along with the water vapor is going to come 00:25:48.44\00:25:51.65 some of these toxins. 00:25:51.68\00:25:52.93 So when you pass this water first through a charcoal filter 00:25:52.96\00:25:57.15 that gets out those toxins so then the distillation 00:25:57.18\00:26:00.80 is a more purer product. 00:26:00.83\00:26:03.22 Two things - can exercise help this and what would you say 00:26:03.25\00:26:08.37 as a Christian clinician would be a spiritual approach? 00:26:08.40\00:26:11.32 There are some very interesting things that we've got to keep 00:26:11.35\00:26:13.75 in mind about this. 00:26:13.78\00:26:14.90 When it comes to exercise one of the most interesting 00:26:14.93\00:26:18.50 things in the athletic literature is that over exercise 00:26:18.53\00:26:22.30 suppresses thyroid function. 00:26:22.33\00:26:24.22 I don't think most of our viewers have a problem 00:26:24.25\00:26:26.04 with that. 00:26:26.07\00:26:27.04 Yes, that's why I'm smiling. - laughter - 00:26:27.05\00:26:28.14 But you know what, Don, in some of the research we've done 00:26:28.17\00:26:31.34 even people who are sedentary starting on an exercise program 00:26:31.37\00:26:35.34 we've found some evidence that they may be doing too much 00:26:35.37\00:26:39.03 exercise. 00:26:39.06\00:26:40.03 The bottom line if someone's not active, they want to 00:26:40.04\00:26:42.80 exercise, listen to their body. 00:26:42.83\00:26:45.14 We're not saying if you've been exercising 20 minutes a day 00:26:45.17\00:26:47.86 cut it down to five. 00:26:47.89\00:26:48.86 Still do the 20 minutes but don't... 00:26:48.88\00:26:51.23 Look if you're 60 years old guy and you haven't been exercising 00:26:51.26\00:26:55.30 for years don't go out to the track and see if you can beat 00:26:55.33\00:26:58.47 some 30 year old woman around the track whose out there 00:26:58.50\00:27:00.80 running it's just unwise not only for your heart 00:27:00.83\00:27:03.21 but also for your thyroid. 00:27:03.24\00:27:05.16 Ok, so that's an interesting connection. 00:27:05.19\00:27:07.58 What would you say spiritually as a thought 00:27:07.61\00:27:09.97 as we close the program? 00:27:10.00\00:27:11.20 One of the precious promises in the Bible that I think speaks 00:27:11.23\00:27:16.02 to this is in Psalm 103. 00:27:16.05\00:27:18.08 David there is praising the Lord. 00:27:18.12\00:27:20.65 "Bless the Lord oh my soul, and all that is within me, 00:27:20.68\00:27:23.42 bless His holy name. 00:27:23.45\00:27:24.60 Bless the Lord oh my soul, and forget not all His benefits. " 00:27:24.64\00:27:27.90 He speaks of some of the great things that the Lord does 00:27:27.93\00:27:30.52 and one of them is healing disease. 00:27:30.55\00:27:33.15 The Lord may not always heal disease in this life but we can 00:27:33.18\00:27:36.29 trust Him to help us to get on a program of health and 00:27:36.33\00:27:39.42 ultimately have true healing in eternity. 00:27:39.46\00:27:42.01 Thanks so much for joining us and helping us with a rather 00:27:42.05\00:27:45.33 complicated subject today, Doctor. 00:27:45.37\00:27:48.07 Thank you for joining us. 00:27:48.11\00:27:49.08 You can get some of this information on 00:27:49.09\00:27:50.93 campasshealth. net. 00:27:50.96\00:27:52.33 We're glad you joined us for Health for a Lifetime 00:27:52.36\00:27:54.89 and we hope your thyroid is healthy as a result. 00:27:54.93\00:27:57.42
