Hello, and welcome to Health for a Life Time. 00:00:48.68\00:00:51.49 We're glad you've taken time out of your busy schedule 00:00:51.53\00:00:54.27 to join us today. 00:00:54.30\00:00:55.27 I think it will be worth your time. 00:00:55.28\00:00:57.02 We're talking with Dr. Chester Clark. 00:00:57.06\00:00:58.73 He's a dentist and he's had about 30 years experience 00:00:58.77\00:01:01.74 in dentistry, so he comes with a wealth of knowledge. 00:01:01.78\00:01:05.83 About 20 years ago he started noticing a real problem 00:01:05.87\00:01:09.89 and that was the effects of mercury based fillings. 00:01:09.92\00:01:14.01 You saw this and you pretty much changed your 00:01:14.05\00:01:17.71 practice after that. 00:01:17.75\00:01:19.13 Yes. 00:01:19.16\00:01:20.72 May of 1985 was when I made the switch from using 00:01:20.75\00:01:25.71 mercury fillings to composite fillings. 00:01:25.74\00:01:29.25 And the reason for that was because you saw a lot of 00:01:29.29\00:01:32.57 problems with mercury. 00:01:32.61\00:01:34.35 Problems that attacked the central nervous system and get 00:01:34.38\00:01:38.65 into the various tissues and all these different things. 00:01:38.69\00:01:42.93 At that point I hadn't seen the problems myself, I had just read 00:01:42.97\00:01:47.34 the research and saw the Spirit of Prophecy statements 00:01:47.37\00:01:50.64 that correlated with the research and I was convinced 00:01:50.68\00:01:53.88 that it was not a healthy thing to put in people's mouths. 00:01:53.91\00:01:57.03 Not one particle of mercury, if it's there you're still going 00:01:57.06\00:01:59.90 to have symptoms, I think that's the statement that really 00:01:59.93\00:02:02.73 triggered this journey. 00:02:02.77\00:02:04.59 You know, who would of thought someone would put mercury 00:02:04.63\00:02:08.88 in the body anyway? 00:02:08.92\00:02:09.89 Where did this all start? 00:02:09.90\00:02:11.30 This idea of mercury fillings? 00:02:11.33\00:02:13.08 Well, it goes back to the early 1800's. 00:02:13.12\00:02:16.28 Actually it's fascinating history. 00:02:16.32\00:02:17.90 There was a man in Paris and another in England that first 00:02:17.93\00:02:21.23 thought of taking shavings from coins, silver coins, 00:02:21.27\00:02:25.92 and combining it with mercury and forming a compound. 00:02:25.95\00:02:30.57 They found it would set up into a solid mass. 00:02:30.61\00:02:33.76 They thought, "That is a possibility for filling teeth. " 00:02:33.80\00:02:37.65 And of course back then they didn't have 00:02:37.68\00:02:39.03 too much alternatives. 00:02:39.06\00:02:41.21 The things they had experimented with was wood,... 00:02:41.24\00:02:44.38 Wood fillings? 00:02:44.41\00:02:47.95 Wood fillings - I don't know if they carved them to fit 00:02:47.98\00:02:51.10 or what, I don't know. 00:02:51.13\00:02:52.48 Oak or poplar? 00:02:52.51\00:02:53.48 Mixtures with feathers, all kinds of things, 00:02:53.49\00:02:56.91 they just didn't have anything. 00:02:56.94\00:02:57.91 One thing they experimented with was pouring molten lead into 00:02:57.95\00:03:02.17 a cavity. 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.24 Now, if I had the choice between molten lead and amalgam filling, 00:03:03.28\00:03:07.28 I would take the amalgam any day. 00:03:07.32\00:03:08.51 Or even a feather filling. 00:03:08.55\00:03:09.90 Yes, that's right. 00:03:09.94\00:03:11.57 It would feel a lot lighter. 00:03:11.61\00:03:12.75 So it started back there with shavings of coins and putting 00:03:12.78\00:03:16.36 it together with mercury? 00:03:16.40\00:03:17.37 Yes. 00:03:17.38\00:03:18.87 Then some French entrepreneurs by the name of Krakouwr brothers 00:03:18.90\00:03:25.33 in 1833 they brought it to the United States and made some 00:03:25.36\00:03:31.44 extravagant claims. 00:03:31.47\00:03:32.84 If you've studied any of the history of this time there was 00:03:32.87\00:03:35.66 no control over medicine or dentistry. 00:03:35.70\00:03:38.52 Anybody that wanted to pull teeth or take care of 00:03:38.56\00:03:41.88 people's health could hang out a shingle and do 00:03:41.91\00:03:44.15 what ever they wanted. 00:03:44.19\00:03:45.84 There was such little bit of information as to proper 00:03:45.87\00:03:50.38 medical treatment and health principles. 00:03:50.42\00:03:53.45 These French brothers called this amalgam material, 00:03:53.49\00:03:57.27 The Royal Mineral Succedaneum. 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.93 That was because it was supposed to replace 00:03:59.97\00:04:02.84 the royal mineral - gold. 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.69 Oh, wow! 00:04:04.73\00:04:05.94 It was as good as gold, I suppose is what 00:04:05.98\00:04:09.96 they were saying. 00:04:09.99\00:04:11.56 It's interesting that here from the very beginning, it was an 00:04:11.60\00:04:15.26 imposture or a masquerader, something that wasn't maybe... 00:04:15.30\00:04:18.93 Fools gold maybe. 00:04:18.96\00:04:19.93 That's it! 00:04:19.94\00:04:20.91 What happened from the beginning the medical dentists 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.61 said they would not use it. 00:04:24.64\00:04:27.30 Medical dentists? 00:04:27.33\00:04:28.36 These were physicians who were treating general health and they 00:04:28.40\00:04:35.15 were also pulling teeth and doing dentistry. 00:04:35.18\00:04:39.89 The other dentists found though that it was a good 00:04:39.92\00:04:45.72 boom for business. 00:04:45.75\00:04:46.72 Now the medical dentists were aware that 00:04:46.73\00:04:48.67 in the late 1700's a disease process had been observed 00:04:48.70\00:04:53.09 in people working in the hatting industry making felt hats. 00:04:53.12\00:04:58.17 They were using mercury to make the felt softer and the people 00:04:58.21\00:05:03.23 that were working there were breathing these mercury 00:05:03.26\00:05:05.77 fumes all the time and they developed what was called, 00:05:05.81\00:05:08.28 The Mad Hatters' Disease. 00:05:08.32\00:05:10.07 Mad Hatters' Disease. 00:05:10.10\00:05:11.78 Mad Hatters' Disease which was a dementia. 00:05:11.82\00:05:16.49 So the medical dentists were aware that mercury was the cause 00:05:16.52\00:05:20.06 of that and so they were opposed to using mercury in fillings. 00:05:20.09\00:05:23.60 So there were two different types of dentists. 00:05:23.63\00:05:26.61 This is interesting. 00:05:26.64\00:05:27.95 Today we don't have that. 00:05:27.98\00:05:29.36 Do we have medical dentists? 00:05:29.39\00:05:31.09 I've never seen that. 00:05:31.12\00:05:32.75 When I go to a barber, he doesn't take my teeth out. 00:05:32.78\00:05:35.44 Well, I don't think we can say there's two 00:05:35.47\00:05:37.88 classifications today, at least legally. 00:05:37.91\00:05:40.25 But, yes, there were medical dentists and what was then 00:05:40.28\00:05:43.43 called the barber dentist. 00:05:43.46\00:05:45.35 Barber dentist. 00:05:45.38\00:05:46.35 Physicians who also cared for teeth, and those were 00:05:46.36\00:05:50.98 the medical dentists. 00:05:51.01\00:05:52.28 Those in non-medical trades, such as barbers, blacksmiths, 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.84 carpenters, or anyone who thought there might be some 00:05:55.87\00:05:58.73 money in the trade were the barber dentists. 00:05:58.76\00:06:02.89 So you go to the barber and you say, "Hey, take out some of 00:06:02.92\00:06:07.36 trim my hair and take out a few teeth, and maybe give me 00:06:07.40\00:06:11.80 a face lift too. " 00:06:11.84\00:06:13.10 So what happened, the group of medical dentists that were 00:06:13.13\00:06:17.34 opposed to using mercury, they formed an organization called 00:06:17.37\00:06:21.55 The Society of Dental Surgeons. 00:06:21.59\00:06:23.41 That was to oppose the crazy trend of putting mercury in 00:06:23.45\00:06:28.83 people's mouths. 00:06:28.87\00:06:29.84 Oh, so right from the very beginning 1840's, 1843, 00:06:29.85\00:06:33.22 wasn't that when the first dental school was formed? 00:06:33.25\00:06:36.67 Right from that very time there was this war over amalgams? 00:06:36.70\00:06:41.02 Exactly. 00:06:41.05\00:06:42.48 That was considered the first amalgam war in 1843 when this 00:06:42.52\00:06:47.60 society of dental surgeons, shortly after forming the first 00:06:47.64\00:06:52.69 dental school, actually banned officially the use of mercury. 00:06:52.72\00:06:58.85 Of course this wasn't a legal step because there was no 00:06:58.89\00:07:01.77 legal controls over dentists or physicians. 00:07:01.80\00:07:05.70 This was called the first amalgam war. 00:07:05.73\00:07:08.07 First amalgam war... so there must be some kind of money 00:07:08.10\00:07:11.02 involved in this, I mean, maybe it's just big business whoever 00:07:11.05\00:07:14.38 perfected the art of putting mercury together with these 00:07:14.41\00:07:18.10 coin shavings was making some money, maybe? 00:07:18.13\00:07:21.41 Well, apparently so, because what happened in the years after 00:07:21.45\00:07:26.69 1843, as the medical dentists saw more and more their business 00:07:26.73\00:07:31.94 going to the barber dentists, they decided, "Look I've got 00:07:31.98\00:07:36.20 feed my family, I better start using these mercury fillings. " 00:07:36.23\00:07:40.42 And so the American Society of Dental Surgeons began to 00:07:40.45\00:07:46.48 loose their members to the use of mercury fillings. 00:07:46.52\00:07:52.52 They became barber dentists instead of the medical dentists. 00:07:52.55\00:07:56.33 Apparently so. 00:07:56.37\00:07:57.64 What happened because of these economics, in 1856 there were 00:07:57.67\00:08:03.78 insufficient members for a quorum at the annual meeting 00:08:03.82\00:08:08.23 of the American Society of Dental Surgeons. 00:08:08.26\00:08:11.95 So they essentially went out of business. 00:08:11.99\00:08:15.61 I see, so that amalgam war was won by the amalgams, those that 00:08:15.64\00:08:21.50 are putting mercury in fillings. 00:08:21.53\00:08:22.86 Yes. 00:08:22.90\00:08:24.23 And then there was some sort of new association formed? 00:08:24.27\00:08:27.91 Yes, that was the beginning of the American Dental Association. 00:08:27.95\00:08:32.27 Wow, so that's an interesting piece of history. 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.84 Let me ask you this, you had the first amalgam war, that you've 00:08:34.87\00:08:38.67 talked about, was there like a World War II? 00:08:38.71\00:08:41.03 Yes, in fact that started in 1920 when a professor 00:08:41.06\00:08:46.24 Alfred Stalk of the Keiser Wilhelm Institute 00:08:46.28\00:08:49.62 in Germany, published research in leading journals 00:08:49.66\00:08:52.97 of the day, demonstrating significant, adverse affects 00:08:53.00\00:08:56.67 from mercury fillings. 00:08:56.71\00:08:58.37 The resulting intense debate among professionals was 00:08:58.40\00:09:02.56 dissipated about 10 years later as the World War II began. 00:09:02.59\00:09:07.97 Ok, so you have this guy coming out and saying, "There's a real 00:09:08.00\00:09:12.85 problems here. " 00:09:12.88\00:09:13.85 Did people receive him very well? 00:09:13.86\00:09:15.95 No, it was similar to the challenges before apparently. 00:09:15.99\00:09:19.92 He presented some good information from the research 00:09:19.95\00:09:23.85 that he was able to do at that time. 00:09:23.88\00:09:27.05 As we saw World War II put it aside and the interest was lost 00:09:27.09\00:09:34.09 until about 50 years later. 00:09:34.12\00:09:37.03 And it must have been presumably then World War III? 00:09:37.07\00:09:41.17 Well, yes, I don't know if there's any starting date 00:09:41.21\00:09:45.28 but I think we were in the throes of World War III 00:09:45.31\00:09:49.46 concerning amalgam... yes. 00:09:49.49\00:09:52.12 That probably began back in the 1970's with the development of 00:09:52.15\00:09:56.34 modern and accurate instruments for measuring mercury in the air 00:09:56.38\00:10:00.53 such as the Jerome Mercury Vapor Analyzer. 00:10:00.57\00:10:03.10 In 1989, however, the United States Environmental Protection 00:10:03.13\00:10:08.36 Agency classified mercury amalgam as a hazardous 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.91 substance. 00:10:11.94\00:10:12.91 Ok, so that really brings it right back to the table again. 00:10:12.92\00:10:18.33 Yes, so that created quite a stir. 00:10:18.37\00:10:20.38 Then in 1990, 60-Minutes, a CBS program, aired a 00:10:20.42\00:10:25.57 blistering exposé of the lack of safety of amalgam. 00:10:25.61\00:10:30.53 This generated quite a public outcry that led the 00:10:30.56\00:10:35.45 U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct 00:10:35.49\00:10:38.41 a hearing. 00:10:38.44\00:10:39.58 Of course, it took a while to schedule that hearing and then 00:10:39.62\00:10:43.82 a while to get the report out. 00:10:43.85\00:10:45.76 I still remember when that report was issued. 00:10:45.79\00:10:49.33 It was so vague that both sides claimed it as victory 00:10:49.36\00:10:54.15 for their viewpoint. 00:10:54.19\00:10:55.55 Sounds like what usually happens committees. 00:10:55.58\00:10:57.68 Probably so. -laughter- 00:10:57.72\00:11:00.23 In 1991, Dr. Boyd Haley, who is chairman of the chemistry 00:11:00.26\00:11:06.04 department at the University of Kentucky, 00:11:06.08\00:11:08.33 he was doing some NIH funded study on Alzheimer's disease. 00:11:08.37\00:11:13.82 In the process of his study, he uncovered impressive evidence 00:11:13.86\00:11:19.28 of mercury amalgam as implicated as causative factor of 00:11:19.31\00:11:25.15 Alzheimer's disease. 00:11:25.18\00:11:27.09 Actually there were two elements, mercury and cadmium, 00:11:27.13\00:11:31.37 which is a common element in cigarette smoke. 00:11:31.41\00:11:35.44 Putting those two together was related to Alzheimer's? 00:11:35.47\00:11:40.23 or independently they were? 00:11:40.27\00:11:41.71 Well, yes, I think in his research he found that both 00:11:41.75\00:11:45.30 of them may be factors in Alzheimer's disease. 00:11:45.33\00:11:47.93 That's fascinating. 00:11:47.96\00:11:50.63 I want to go back to another thing you said. 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.60 You said that in the late 1980's the EPA started to put some 00:11:52.63\00:11:58.60 regulations or came up with some information about that 00:11:58.64\00:12:01.37 Anything else you can tell us about that? 00:12:01.40\00:12:03.23 Well, there's some other agencies that have been involved 00:12:03.27\00:12:06.58 in the regulation of mercury as well. 00:12:06.61\00:12:09.08 One of them, WHO, the World Health Organization, 00:12:09.11\00:12:12.96 set an exposure limit for mercury at 00:12:12.99\00:12:15.58 25 mcg per cubit meter, and this is for an eight hour shift. 00:12:15.62\00:12:22.84 OSHA's limits was 50 mcg per cubit meter, again during an 00:12:22.87\00:12:30.05 eight hour shift. 00:12:30.09\00:12:31.06 But another government agency entitled the 00:12:31.07\00:12:34.43 Agency For Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, ATSDR, 00:12:34.47\00:12:39.82 their limit was 0.02 mcg per cubit meter. 00:12:39.86\00:12:49.47 So in other words, the point you're making there, is that 00:12:49.51\00:12:52.29 there's a number that have seen it's a problem and some are 00:12:52.33\00:12:56.50 even more and more stringent because they see more evidence 00:12:56.54\00:13:00.68 that it's really going to cause problems in the body. 00:13:00.72\00:13:02.61 Yes, and OSHA is concerned about people in the work place. 00:13:02.65\00:13:07.46 And EPA, I think their limit is. 2 mcg. 00:13:07.50\00:13:13.95 The most stringent is this ATSDR agency that has said. 02. 00:13:13.99\00:13:21.33 What I believe and what some of this research shows there is 00:13:21.37\00:13:28.68 really no observable effects 00:13:28.71\00:13:32.55 limits... limitation... no level that is safe. 00:13:32.58\00:13:38.85 So just like that statement by Ellen White, that not one 00:13:38.89\00:13:43.49 particle should be there. 00:13:43.53\00:13:44.77 That's what they are beginning to come to. 00:13:44.81\00:13:46.79 That's interesting. 00:13:46.82\00:13:48.21 Well, we're going to come back to talking a little bit more 00:13:48.25\00:13:51.41 about Dr. Boyd and your going to show us a fascinating clip, 00:13:51.45\00:13:54.88 I've seen this, that will kind of underline what 00:13:54.92\00:13:57.91 you've been talking about. 00:13:57.95\00:13:58.96 We've taken a journey looking at the history of how mercury 00:13:58.99\00:14:02.67 got into our mouths and hopefully we're going to find 00:14:02.70\00:14:06.00 maybe how it can get out of our mouths and 00:14:06.03\00:14:08.82 how we can avoid the dangers. 00:14:08.85\00:14:10.18 We're glad you've joined us and we hope you join us when we come 00:14:10.22\00:14:13.08 back and look at that fascinating clip. 00:14:13.11\00:14:14.98 Don't miss it. 00:14:15.02\00:14:15.99 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:14:17.48\00:14:19.07 shed a few pounds? 00:14:19.11\00:14:20.08 Have you been on a diet for most of your life? 00:14:20.09\00:14:22.71 But not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:22.75\00:14:25.91 00:14:40.07\00:14:41.17 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:41.20\00:14:44.15 by thousands who are able to eat more 00:14:44.18\00:14:46.42 and loose weight permanently 00:14:46.46\00:14:48.08 without feeling guilty or hungry through lifestyle medicine. 00:14:48.12\00:14:51.80 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:14:51.83\00:14:55.31 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach to eating, 00:14:55.35\00:14:58.87 nutrition, and lifestyle changes that can help you prevent 00:14:58.90\00:15:02.15 heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. 00:15:02.18\00:15:04.63 Call or write today for your free copy: 00:15:04.66\00:15:07.07 Welcome back. 00:15:17.16\00:15:18.20 We've been talking with Dr. Chester Clark. 00:15:18.23\00:15:21.09 And we've been talking about mercury fillings. 00:15:21.13\00:15:23.91 About 20 years ago, Dr. Clark recognized that there could be 00:15:23.95\00:15:28.08 real problems with that. 00:15:28.12\00:15:29.20 Doctor, as we were talking you went through the history 00:15:29.23\00:15:33.10 of mercury fillings, how they ended up getting in our mouths, 00:15:33.13\00:15:36.63 how there was a fight over that from the very beginning 00:15:36.66\00:15:39.53 from the medical community that was involved in extracting 00:15:39.57\00:15:42.92 teeth back then vs. the barber association - World War I 00:15:42.96\00:15:46.28 of this whole thing. 00:15:46.31\00:15:47.61 And then World War II and then World War III, using those terms 00:15:47.64\00:15:52.67 loosely, meaning the discussion over whether not we should have 00:15:52.70\00:15:57.69 fillings in our mouth or not. 00:15:57.73\00:15:58.78 We're kind of in the middle of that. 00:15:58.82\00:16:00.55 And you were talking about some research by a Dr. Boyd that was 00:16:00.58\00:16:04.43 linking either cadmium or mercury to Alzheimer's. 00:16:04.46\00:16:11.47 I'm sure that got everyone's attention. 00:16:11.51\00:16:13.65 You're going to show us a clip about that. 00:16:13.68\00:16:15.79 Set that up a little bit for us. 00:16:15.83\00:16:18.45 Mercury effects brain tissue and it effects the way neurons 00:16:18.49\00:16:23.69 develop and apparently the sheath that is formed around 00:16:23.73\00:16:28.90 the dendrites, the actual nerve structure, is seriously affected 00:16:28.94\00:16:35.36 by the presence of mercury. 00:16:35.39\00:16:37.27 That's what this video will show us 00:16:37.30\00:16:39.77 better than I can describe it. 00:16:39.81\00:16:41.14 Let's take a look. 00:16:41.18\00:16:42.15 Mercury has long been known to be a potent 00:16:43.75\00:16:45.66 neuro toxic substance whether it is inhaled or consumed in the 00:16:45.70\00:16:49.25 diet as a food contaminant. 00:16:49.29\00:16:50.64 Over the past 15 years medical research laboratories have 00:16:50.68\00:16:54.17 established that dental amalgam tooth fillings are a major 00:16:54.20\00:16:57.66 contributor to mercury body burden. 00:16:57.70\00:16:59.56 In 1997 a team of research scientists demonstrated that 00:16:59.59\00:17:03.47 mercury vapor inhalation by animals produced a molecular 00:17:03.50\00:17:07.35 lesion in brain protein metabolism which was similar 00:17:07.39\00:17:10.90 to a lesion seen in 80% Alzheimer's diseased brains. 00:17:10.93\00:17:14.40 Recently completed experiments by scientists at the 00:17:15.20\00:17:18.22 University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine 00:17:18.25\00:17:20.42 now reveal with direct visual evidence from brain neuron 00:17:20.45\00:17:23.69 tissue cultures how mercury ions actually alter the cell 00:17:23.72\00:17:26.93 membranes structure of developing neurons. 00:17:26.97\00:17:29.07 To better understand mercury's effect on the brain, let us 00:17:29.85\00:17:33.50 first illustrate what brain neurons look like 00:17:33.54\00:17:35.49 and how they grow. 00:17:35.52\00:17:37.09 In this animation we see three brain neurons growing in 00:17:37.13\00:17:40.77 a tissue culture, each with a central cell body and numerous 00:17:40.81\00:17:44.26 neurite processes. 00:17:44.29\00:17:45.85 At the end of each neurite is a growth cone where structural 00:17:47.28\00:17:49.78 proteins are assembled to form the cell membrane. 00:17:49.81\00:17:52.17 Two principle proteins involved in growth cone function are 00:17:52.20\00:17:56.13 actin, which is responsible for the pulsating motion seen here, 00:17:56.16\00:18:00.05 and tubulin, a major structural component 00:18:00.09\00:18:02.89 of the neurite membrane. 00:18:02.93\00:18:04.54 During normal cell growth tubulin molecules link together 00:18:04.57\00:18:08.69 end to end to form microtubules which surround neurofibrils, 00:18:08.72\00:18:12.85 another structural protein component of the neuronal axone. 00:18:12.89\00:18:16.99 Shown here is the neurite of a live neuron isolated from snail 00:18:17.97\00:18:21.18 brain tissue displaying linear growth due to 00:18:21.21\00:18:24.13 growth cone activity. 00:18:24.17\00:18:25.60 It is important to note that the growth cone in all animal 00:18:25.64\00:18:29.01 species, ranging from snails to humans, have identical 00:18:29.05\00:18:32.47 structural and behavioral characteristics and use proteins 00:18:32.50\00:18:35.89 of virtually identical composition. 00:18:35.92\00:18:38.16 In this experiment neurons also isolated from snail brain tissue 00:18:41.10\00:18:44.70 were grown in culture for several days, after which very 00:18:44.73\00:18:48.00 low concentrations of mercury were added to the culture medium 00:18:48.03\00:18:51.34 for 20 minutes. 00:18:51.38\00:18:52.76 Over the next 30 minutes the neurite membrane underwent rapid 00:18:52.79\00:18:56.84 degeneration leaving behind the denuded neurofibrils seen here. 00:18:56.87\00:19:01.13 In contrast other heavy metals added to this same concentration 00:19:01.17\00:19:05.51 such as aluminum, lead, cadmium, and manganese did not produce 00:19:05.54\00:19:09.85 this effect. 00:19:09.88\00:19:10.85 To understand how mercury causes this degeneration, 00:19:10.86\00:19:14.29 let us return to our illustration. 00:19:14.32\00:19:16.39 As mentioned before, tubulin proteins link together during 00:19:16.42\00:19:19.79 normal cell growth to form the microtubules which support the 00:19:19.83\00:19:23.16 neurite structure. 00:19:23.20\00:19:24.42 When mercury ions are introduced into the culture medium 00:19:24.45\00:19:27.68 they infiltrate the cell and bind themselves to newly 00:19:27.71\00:19:30.90 synthesized tubulin molecules. 00:19:30.94\00:19:33.36 More specifically, the mercury ions attached themselves 00:19:33.40\00:19:36.54 to the binding site reserved for quantazine triphosphate, 00:19:36.57\00:19:39.68 or GTP, on the beta sub unit of the effected 00:19:39.71\00:19:42.74 tubulin molecules. 00:19:42.77\00:19:44.06 Since bound GTP normally provides the energy which allows 00:19:44.09\00:19:47.58 tubulin molecules to attach to one another, mercury ions 00:19:47.62\00:19:51.07 bound to these sites prevent tubulin proteins 00:19:51.11\00:19:53.20 from linking together. 00:19:53.23\00:19:54.65 Consequently, the neurite's microtubules begin to 00:19:55.84\00:19:58.97 disassemble into free tubulin molecules leaving the 00:19:59.00\00:20:01.59 neurites stripped of it's supporting structure. 00:20:01.63\00:20:04.18 Ultimately, both the developing neurite and its growth cone 00:20:06.50\00:20:09.55 collapse and some denuded neurofibrils form aggregates or 00:20:09.58\00:20:12.60 tangles as depicted here. 00:20:12.64\00:20:16.16 Wow, that's fascinating. 00:20:16.92\00:20:17.89 So mercury... what were they dropping into 00:20:17.90\00:20:20.22 that little Petri dish? 00:20:20.26\00:20:21.92 That was elemental mercury graphically showing the 00:20:21.96\00:20:26.79 insertion of a low concentration of mercury. 00:20:26.82\00:20:31.30 And that's exactly what can happen with amalgam fillings? 00:20:31.33\00:20:34.47 Yes, they were simulating the level of mercury that is found 00:20:34.51\00:20:37.62 in human brain tissue. 00:20:37.65\00:20:38.99 Wow, with this are there any people that are banning mercury? 00:20:39.02\00:20:42.87 Well, there has been a number of countries that have done that. 00:20:42.90\00:20:45.98 Sweden was the first to do so, I think it was 1991. 00:20:46.01\00:20:49.41 Germany has been phasing it out. 00:20:49.44\00:20:51.29 And I believe Norway and a few other countries have either 00:20:51.32\00:20:54.39 banned or are in the process of doing so. 00:20:54.42\00:20:56.75 And they are seeing positive effects? 00:20:56.78\00:20:58.07 Well, yes, Germany has done a study that showed the 00:20:58.10\00:21:03.58 body burden of mercury in children has been decreasing 00:21:03.61\00:21:06.70 as there placement of mercury fillings has decreased. 00:21:06.73\00:21:10.84 What about the United States where it's usually supposed 00:21:10.87\00:21:12.78 to be seen as the leaders here but sometimes we're not, 00:21:12.81\00:21:16.02 what are they doing? 00:21:16.05\00:21:17.02 Well, I have some good news. 00:21:17.03\00:21:19.29 At least we have an effort going on in congress presently. 00:21:19.32\00:21:23.17 A representative, Diane Watson, a democrat from California 00:21:23.20\00:21:28.74 has a bill titled HR4011 entitled 00:21:28.77\00:21:34.99 Mercury in Dental Fillings Disclosure Prohibition Act. 00:21:35.02\00:21:39.49 That we hope will be approved in the House of Representatives 00:21:39.52\00:21:44.55 and a similar bill in the Senate. 00:21:44.58\00:21:46.56 And we might follow the lead of some of these European 00:21:46.59\00:21:50.96 countries in banning mercury fillings. 00:21:50.99\00:21:54.50 Ok, so if people want to get involved they can call their 00:21:54.53\00:21:57.55 representative and say, "Support... " 00:21:57.58\00:21:59.18 ...who was this person that's doing this a 00:21:59.21\00:22:00.92 democrat from California? 00:22:00.95\00:22:02.10 Diane Watson. 00:22:02.13\00:22:03.15 But just a few high lights, and I would encourage anyone to go 00:22:03.18\00:22:06.41 online, as I did last week, and actually read the text of this 00:22:06.44\00:22:10.36 bill, it's 5 or 6 pages long. 00:22:10.39\00:22:12.75 I learned some things from just reading that, 00:22:12.78\00:22:15.52 that I wasn't aware of. 00:22:15.55\00:22:16.80 Just a few high lights that come from that bill - it states that 00:22:16.83\00:22:21.58 mercury is number three behind arsenic and lead on the priority 00:22:21.61\00:22:27.24 list of hazardous substances. 00:22:27.27\00:22:29.54 Wow, so it's a big problem. 00:22:29.57\00:22:31.54 The dental industry places 70 million mercury fillings 00:22:31.57\00:22:39.98 each year with 1/2 to 3/4's grams of mercury in 00:22:40.01\00:22:44.64 each filling. 00:22:44.67\00:22:45.86 Now we've talked about limits of micro grams, of course that's 00:22:45.89\00:22:49.41 the amount that's vaporizing, but the fillings themselves 00:22:49.44\00:22:53.63 each filling average has 1/2 to 3/4's of gram 00:22:53.66\00:22:57.55 of mercury to begin with. 00:22:57.58\00:22:59.02 No wonder they're concerned. 00:22:59.05\00:23:00.10 According to the World Health Organization the estimated, 00:23:00.13\00:23:03.08 average, daily intake and retention of mercury from 00:23:03.11\00:23:06.76 dental amalgam is 3 to 27 micro grams. 00:23:06.79\00:23:10.75 You remember we just mentioned earlier the 00:23:10.78\00:23:13.16 Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registration 00:23:13.19\00:23:16.93 has set their limit as .02 micro grams per cubic feet. 00:23:16.96\00:23:27.03 Do they say anything about children in the bill? 00:23:27.06\00:23:29.42 Yes, they do. 00:23:29.45\00:23:31.45 Let me see if I have any of that listed here... 00:23:31.48\00:23:36.95 They mention that according to the EPA, U.S. dentist use 00:23:36.98\00:23:41.95 approximately 34 tons of mercury every year. 00:23:41.98\00:23:46.12 Wow, that's a lot. 00:23:46.15\00:23:47.12 Another interesting fact is that the amount of mercury 00:23:47.13\00:23:52.84 used by the dental industry in 1980 was just 2% of the 00:23:52.87\00:23:57.94 total used in this country. 00:23:57.97\00:23:59.33 In the year 2000 it had increased to 22%. 00:23:59.36\00:24:04.54 I assume that reflects the fact that they've taken mercury out 00:24:04.57\00:24:07.78 of thermometers and other things that would provide 00:24:07.81\00:24:11.75 human exposure. 00:24:11.78\00:24:12.85 It is estimated, though, last year 2004, that number was 55% 00:24:12.88\00:24:20.06 of the country's consumption of mercury was used in teeth. 00:24:20.09\00:24:25.95 So you are in the "hot seat" as a dentist and the others. 00:24:25.98\00:24:29.44 And you're kind of out of it because you've made that 00:24:29.47\00:24:31.53 discovery a number of years ago. 00:24:31.56\00:24:33.73 So the big thing is don't have those... if you have any way 00:24:33.76\00:24:39.12 to avoid mercury, do it now. 00:24:39.15\00:24:41.03 If you have had that then... 00:24:41.06\00:24:42.63 What about kids? 00:24:42.66\00:24:44.28 You didn't answer that - children. 00:24:44.31\00:24:46.00 Any thing they're coming up with on that? 00:24:46.03\00:24:48.28 Well, I don't see anything in this HR4011 bill that directly 00:24:48.31\00:24:54.29 relates to children but we do know that children are more 00:24:54.32\00:24:58.72 susceptible to mercury. 00:24:58.75\00:25:00.39 This bill, if it is passed, calls for the immediate ban on 00:25:00.42\00:25:11.53 the use of mercury in children under the age of 18. 00:25:11.56\00:25:14.87 And also in pregnant and lactating women. 00:25:14.90\00:25:19.25 And a total ban on the use of mercury by restricting it's 00:25:19.28\00:25:23.16 interstate transport by January 1, 2009. 00:25:23.19\00:25:28.85 Wow, this is amazing then. 00:25:28.88\00:25:31.01 You would have an antidote evidence yourself based on the 00:25:31.04\00:25:39.12 some insights in the Spirit of Prophecy that say, 00:25:39.15\00:25:41.20 take it all out. 00:25:41.23\00:25:42.20 And now you have a bill that says the best thing to do is 00:25:42.22\00:25:44.90 take everything out. 00:25:44.93\00:25:46.49 Yes, exactly. 00:25:46.52\00:25:48.72 So in your mind, Doctor, I'm putting you on the "hot seat," 00:25:48.75\00:25:53.77 Is there irrefutable evidence, in your mind, 00:25:53.81\00:25:58.27 in what you presented, that the best thing to do is to get 00:25:58.31\00:26:01.50 rid of these fillings? 00:26:01.53\00:26:02.70 Yes. 00:26:02.73\00:26:04.19 First of all, mercury in all it's forms is a powerful poison. 00:26:04.22\00:26:07.91 Secondly, mercury is continually released from amalgam fillings. 00:26:07.94\00:26:12.22 Third, the release of mercury from amalgam results in a 00:26:12.25\00:26:16.09 cumulative rise of the poison in body tissues particularly 00:26:16.12\00:26:19.92 the kidneys and the central nervous system. 00:26:19.96\00:26:22.79 And finally, there is no established safe level 00:26:22.82\00:26:25.61 of mercury. 00:26:25.65\00:26:26.80 So even though you're giving us this really strong statement 00:26:26.84\00:26:30.94 would you counsel people to run out and get them taken out 00:26:30.98\00:26:35.05 right now? 00:26:53.98\00:26:56.21 In Ephesians 4:14, 15, "That we henceforth be no more 00:26:56.25\00:27:00.60 children tossed to and fro, carried about with every wind 00:27:00.63\00:27:04.94 of doctrine by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, 00:27:04.98\00:27:08.92 whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth 00:27:08.95\00:27:12.86 in love, may grow up into him in all things, 00:27:12.89\00:27:15.61 which is the head, even Christ. " 00:27:15.64\00:27:18.00 As I look at this whole picture of mercury toxicity, 00:27:18.04\00:27:21.97 it fits this characteristic of "cunning craftiness. " 00:27:22.00\00:27:25.71 But I want to be one who can "speak the truth in love," 00:27:25.75\00:27:29.42 can tell people what I believe but in a loving way 00:27:29.46\00:27:33.59 and win them to Christ. 00:27:33.63\00:27:36.33 I don't know about you, but as I've listened to the Doctor 00:27:36.37\00:27:39.34 today, he's given me a lot of things to think about and also 00:27:39.38\00:27:42.32 some action items, but also a caution to make sure that 00:27:42.36\00:27:46.44 those that are serving you, your family, are aware of some 00:27:46.47\00:27:50.52 very important facts concerning mercury. 00:27:50.55\00:27:52.83 We're glad that you've joined us and we hope that you 00:27:52.86\00:27:55.58 as a result have health that lasts a lifetime. 00:27:55.61\00:27:58.53
