Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime 00:00:46.39\00:00:47.76 I'm your host Don Macintosh. 00:00:47.79\00:00:49.16 We're glad you've joined us today. 00:00:49.20\00:00:50.99 Today in the studio we're going to be talking with 00:00:51.03\00:00:53.19 Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:00:53.22\00:00:54.48 Dr. Nedley is a physician in internal medicine, specializing 00:00:54.52\00:00:58.79 in the organs of the body and looking a little bit deeper. 00:00:58.82\00:01:03.06 He's done some programs with us before that many 00:01:03.10\00:01:06.20 of you have enjoyed. 00:01:06.23\00:01:07.20 Today we're going to be talking with Dr. Nedley about 00:01:07.21\00:01:10.20 health at all ages, is that what we're talking about? 00:01:10.24\00:01:13.33 That's right, health at every age. 00:01:13.37\00:01:15.23 Every age. 00:01:15.26\00:01:16.90 We don't have to wait until we're older to be healthy. 00:01:16.94\00:01:18.71 We can start even before we're born, perhaps. 00:01:18.74\00:01:21.39 That's the whole point. 00:01:21.43\00:01:23.00 Many people don't worry about their health, Don, until they 00:01:23.03\00:01:26.58 start aging and then they're wanting to try to prevent 00:01:26.62\00:01:30.20 disability, premature death, and that's important, but really 00:01:30.24\00:01:34.73 how well we're functioning at every age is very important. 00:01:34.77\00:01:38.75 If the child isn't functioning well he's not going to be doing 00:01:38.78\00:01:42.52 as well academically, not going to be part of the family unit 00:01:42.55\00:01:46.25 as well, and so it gets down to children and even before 00:01:46.29\00:01:50.91 as you eluded to. 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.01 You're an author, you've written several books that 00:01:52.04\00:01:55.39 have been very well received. 00:01:55.43\00:01:57.42 One is "Proof Positive" that goes through some of the things 00:01:57.45\00:02:00.38 that we'll cover today, but you're working on some more 00:02:00.42\00:02:02.90 material that will come out in the future here. 00:02:02.94\00:02:04.49 We're excited about that. 00:02:04.52\00:02:05.94 You've also written a book on depression. 00:02:05.97\00:02:08.86 Now I want to talk about this health at every age idea. 00:02:08.90\00:02:12.70 When we talk about health at every age, you've alluded 00:02:12.73\00:02:16.50 to the fact that actually a person's health starts before 00:02:16.54\00:02:20.31 they have any decision making process involved in that before 00:02:20.35\00:02:24.09 they're even born. 00:02:24.12\00:02:25.09 Before they're even born. 00:02:25.10\00:02:26.21 Actually their health can be dependant upon their 00:02:26.25\00:02:29.61 parents' health at the time they're conceived. 00:02:29.64\00:02:32.97 Time they're conceived. 00:02:33.01\00:02:34.72 So just when, so to speak, they're a twinkle in 00:02:34.76\00:02:36.95 their dad's eye or their mom's eye. 00:02:36.98\00:02:38.46 Exactly. 00:02:38.50\00:02:39.47 People out there that are beginning to think about 00:02:39.48\00:02:42.13 starting a family or they want that to happen 00:02:42.17\00:02:45.58 especially they need to listen up to what 00:02:45.61\00:02:47.35 your about to say now. 00:02:47.38\00:02:48.35 What are you going to tell us? 00:02:48.36\00:02:49.33 The dad's health is actually just as important as the 00:02:49.34\00:02:53.38 mother's health at the time they conceive. 00:02:53.41\00:02:56.36 The dad's health! 00:02:56.39\00:02:57.39 The dad's health. 00:02:57.42\00:02:58.39 Now you wouldn't think that. 00:02:58.40\00:02:59.37 Normally a dad just thinks, 00:02:59.38\00:03:00.35 "Well, it's all her, it's the women" 00:03:00.36\00:03:02.03 That's right and it's all put on her, she's pregnant, etc. 00:03:02.06\00:03:06.03 But we have to back up from the time the woman finds out 00:03:06.06\00:03:09.95 that she's pregnant and then all of a sudden she's interested 00:03:09.99\00:03:12.45 in being healthy for the baby's sake. 00:03:12.48\00:03:14.75 We need to back up before that and she needs to be very 00:03:14.79\00:03:17.77 interested in her husband's health if they are planning on 00:03:17.81\00:03:20.76 having children and conceiving. 00:03:20.79\00:03:22.23 So what should she be saying to her husband about his health? 00:03:22.27\00:03:25.67 What kind of things does he need to be watching? 00:03:25.71\00:03:27.28 Nutrition is an important aspect. 00:03:27.32\00:03:30.43 Actually it boils down to just two large areas. 00:03:30.47\00:03:34.20 The dad's health is dependant on what the dad is putting into 00:03:34.23\00:03:38.21 his body and what the dad is doing with his body. 00:03:38.25\00:03:40.59 What he's putting into his body can have a lot of importance 00:03:40.62\00:03:45.29 in regards to how high a quality the sperm is that he is donating 00:03:45.33\00:03:52.24 to the person. 00:03:52.27\00:03:54.59 How often is sperm replaced? 00:03:54.62\00:03:57.20 How healthy does he have to be for how long before conception? 00:03:57.24\00:04:00.89 It's about a week process. 00:04:00.93\00:04:02.65 If you go back to the forerunning of a sperm 00:04:02.69\00:04:06.17 it could be even up to a month. 00:04:06.20\00:04:08.19 But actually sperm is turned over every few days. 00:04:08.23\00:04:13.01 Really if he's planning on conceiving, if he would change 00:04:13.04\00:04:17.35 his life and get much healthier for 30 days before conception 00:04:17.38\00:04:21.66 he could do a lot of good. 00:04:21.69\00:04:22.90 So slow down, don't go to those fast food restaurants, 00:04:22.94\00:04:25.75 so what kind of things are we talking about? 00:04:25.78\00:04:27.56 What kind of things does he need to be putting in 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.93 before conception? 00:04:29.96\00:04:32.55 We're trying to prevent sperm damage. 00:04:32.59\00:04:34.71 The sperm is damaged by what we call pro-oxidants. 00:04:34.74\00:04:39.72 For instance cigarette smoking has an increase risk of damaging 00:04:39.75\00:04:45.50 the sperm and if the sperm is damaged at the time of 00:04:45.53\00:04:48.14 conception that baby may end up with a childhood malignancy 00:04:48.18\00:04:52.93 such as a brain tumor or a whelms kidney tumor 00:04:52.96\00:04:56.62 or even leukemia. 00:04:56.65\00:04:58.67 All from cigarette smoke. 00:04:58.70\00:05:00.00 All from cigarette smoke in the dad 00:05:00.03\00:05:02.22 at the time of conception. 00:05:02.26\00:05:03.24 And is it them smoking or even second hand smoke? 00:05:03.28\00:05:06.26 Second had smoke can play a role as well but more 00:05:06.29\00:05:09.24 important is their own smoking. 00:05:09.27\00:05:11.56 So stop smoking if you're thinking about having a child? 00:05:11.59\00:05:13.85 Exactly. 00:05:13.89\00:05:14.86 All right, what else? 00:05:14.87\00:05:15.84 In addition to that, being on a high anti-oxidant diet 00:05:15.85\00:05:20.80 can help prevent that damage as well. 00:05:20.83\00:05:23.34 High anti-oxidants, you're saying that the sperm is going 00:05:23.38\00:05:27.30 to be damaged I suppose by what they call 00:05:27.34\00:05:29.62 free radicals or something? 00:05:29.66\00:05:30.87 Correct. 00:05:30.91\00:05:32.04 Explain what a free radical is. 00:05:32.08\00:05:33.28 I've always found that term very interesting. 00:05:33.32\00:05:36.31 Free radicals are present in the environment. 00:05:36.35\00:05:39.31 0-3 or ozone actually is a free radical. 00:05:39.34\00:05:44.20 It turns into an 0-2 and then a free oxygen molecule 00:05:44.24\00:05:48.87 that can produce a lot of damage as it bounces around. 00:05:48.90\00:05:53.47 So what can we do to protect us against these free radicals? 00:05:53.50\00:05:58.00 Well actually the study that was done on preventing childhood 00:05:58.03\00:06:02.50 malignancy, looking back at the father's health showed that the 00:06:02.54\00:06:06.88 amount of vitamin C he was consuming at the time of 00:06:06.91\00:06:10.40 conception was critical in preventing the damage 00:06:10.44\00:06:13.89 from the free radicals. 00:06:13.93\00:06:15.01 So you mean at the time of conception, 00:06:15.05\00:06:16.89 that would be like that month before. 00:06:16.92\00:06:18.73 Exactly. 00:06:18.77\00:06:19.74 So what, get a big supplement, get a bottle of vitamin C 00:06:19.75\00:06:23.83 and have it by your bed at all times? 00:06:23.87\00:06:25.29 That actually will protect some up to 250 mg or more 00:06:25.33\00:06:29.94 of vitamin C a day can be protective for the sperm. 00:06:29.98\00:06:34.56 But better than the antioxidant pills in the bottles are the 00:06:34.59\00:06:39.91 antioxidant fruits and vegetables. 00:06:39.95\00:06:42.13 And the fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C. 00:06:42.16\00:06:45.76 Because not only will you get the benefit of the vitamin C 00:06:45.79\00:06:49.35 but you also get the benefit of a number of other 00:06:49.39\00:06:52.17 antioxidants in those fruits and vegetables. 00:06:52.21\00:06:54.92 So let's take a look at those and see what they would be. 00:06:54.96\00:06:57.38 I think we have a graphic on that. 00:06:57.41\00:06:58.65 Yes, we have foods that are high in vitamin C and 00:06:58.68\00:07:01.57 fortunately fruit is a good source: 00:07:01.61\00:07:04.41 Broccoli, notice it says "raw" the reason why is when we cook 00:07:20.43\00:07:22.81 a vegetable or fruit it will destroy about half 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.70 of the vitamin C. 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.09 And then we get into the foods that are very high in vitamin C 00:07:47.11\00:07:50.50 Brussels sprouts is loaded with vitamin C, so much so 00:08:00.17\00:08:03.24 that even if we boil Brussels sprouts and destroy 1/2 of 00:08:03.28\00:08:06.28 the vitamin C, we're still going to end up with 98 mg 00:08:06.31\00:08:09.28 in a cup of Brussels sprouts. 00:08:09.31\00:08:11.00 Orange juice, notice if it's fresh it's 124 mg. 00:08:11.04\00:08:16.20 The ready to serve orange juice that's sitting on the shelf 00:08:16.24\00:08:19.40 in the grocery stores, the vitamin C gets destroyed 00:08:19.43\00:08:22.21 over time. 00:08:22.25\00:08:23.22 Just a couple weeks on the shelf and you'll have about 1/2 00:08:23.23\00:08:27.76 of that vitamin C. 00:08:27.80\00:08:28.77 You'll actually do better in getting the orange juice 00:08:28.78\00:08:31.39 from orange concentrate, that preserves the vitamin C. 00:08:31.42\00:08:35.31 Or if you do it yourself and actually juice it yourself. 00:08:35.35\00:08:39.21 So you can see, Don, that it wouldn't be hard if you're on 00:08:47.95\00:08:51.66 a diet particularly that has more raw fruits and vegetables 00:08:51.70\00:08:55.89 in them to be easily getting your 250 mg of vitamin C a day. 00:08:55.93\00:09:00.09 So if you're a wife and your husband just really doesn't like 00:09:00.12\00:09:03.69 healthy foods like this or he'll eat whatever you make 00:09:03.72\00:09:07.21 for him, it's a good time for the wife to take the husband 00:09:07.25\00:09:10.14 out to some kind of restaurant that has all those things 00:09:10.17\00:09:13.03 on the salad bar. 00:09:13.06\00:09:14.03 Yes, that's right or just go to the grocery store and to 00:09:14.04\00:09:17.49 the produce section. 00:09:17.52\00:09:18.66 That would be better than most restaurants. 00:09:18.70\00:09:21.07 I can just see it now, all these young couples 00:09:21.11\00:09:23.50 in the produce section, getting their red bell peppers, kiwis, 00:09:23.53\00:09:28.18 hey you know, Brussels sprouts, I got to confess, 00:09:28.21\00:09:30.18 Brussels sprouts, I really almost loath Brussels sprouts, 00:09:30.22\00:09:33.24 but now I know why they taste like that, they're just like a 00:09:33.28\00:09:36.27 vitamin C pill that's not sweet. 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.19 I don't think this is going to affect a global economy of 00:09:38.22\00:09:42.52 Brussels sprout consumption because I said this but... 00:09:42.56\00:09:46.83 So all those different things vitamin C, 00:09:46.86\00:09:49.19 that gives us protection. 00:09:49.23\00:09:50.36 Vitamin C protects the sperm from genetic damage 00:09:50.40\00:09:52.69 Anything else you want to say about the men, 00:09:52.73\00:09:54.99 these men that are thinking about having children? 00:09:55.02\00:09:57.49 You've told them they need to step up to the plate and 00:09:57.53\00:09:59.96 put the right things on the plate. 00:10:00.00\00:10:01.14 Anything else they need to know? 00:10:01.17\00:10:02.24 The other thing is even in regards to whether they have a 00:10:02.28\00:10:06.01 job or not can be important. 00:10:06.05\00:10:07.83 Well, these women watching today are going to love this! 00:10:07.87\00:10:12.41 "Get out there, get a job!" 00:10:12.44\00:10:13.65 What does this have to do with it? 00:10:13.68\00:10:15.11 Actually studies show that once a woman does conceive 00:10:15.15\00:10:20.05 and is pregnant, if the man is unemployed, she will have a 00:10:20.09\00:10:24.96 marked increase risk of pregnancy complications 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.88 then if her husband is employed in a work environment. 00:10:27.91\00:10:31.75 Wow, so you need to get a job! 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.86 Any kind of job? Wal Mart? 00:10:34.90\00:10:36.47 In the study they didn't look at the types of jobs. 00:10:36.51\00:10:39.52 They just looked at whither they had a job or not. 00:10:39.56\00:10:42.54 So get a job! 00:10:42.58\00:10:43.97 If you're thinking of having... you know that's 00:10:44.01\00:10:47.01 good sense any way, right? 00:10:47.05\00:10:48.05 Because you're going to have to support... 00:10:48.08\00:10:49.42 You're going to have to provide for your family. 00:10:49.45\00:10:51.07 Probably that increases the stress. 00:10:51.10\00:10:52.53 I mean, hey, we've got this baby coming and... 00:10:52.56\00:10:54.55 Right, the husband is unemployed. 00:10:54.59\00:10:56.32 But actually, even if they were on the state system, 00:10:56.36\00:10:59.25 the state support system, in fact the study was done in 00:10:59.28\00:11:02.75 Scandinavia where if a husband doesn't have a job, they're 00:11:02.78\00:11:06.22 pretty well supported by the more socialist countries 00:11:06.25\00:11:09.03 over there. 00:11:09.07\00:11:10.04 But even despite the financial support that comes from 00:11:10.05\00:11:14.62 unemployment, the study showed that being employed dramatically 00:11:14.66\00:11:18.95 reduced the risk of pregnancy complications in the female. 00:11:18.99\00:11:22.45 What about a person who just can't get a job? 00:11:22.48\00:11:24.39 And I should mention, to clarify, that last statement 00:11:24.42\00:11:26.82 I made; that's employment of the husband 00:11:26.85\00:11:29.61 Of the husband, not of the wife. 00:11:29.65\00:11:30.81 Not of the wife, in fact we can get into that when we cover 00:11:30.85\00:11:34.43 woman's health aspect of things. 00:11:34.47\00:11:36.16 So what if you can't get a job? 00:11:36.20\00:11:37.82 I mean you really, truly can't get a job. 00:11:37.86\00:11:40.34 All these guys out there that are doing this, their sighing... 00:11:40.37\00:11:42.81 Well, that's a good point because there are some things 00:11:42.85\00:11:45.25 that man can do as well. 00:11:45.29\00:11:46.83 Being supportive to his wife during her pregnancy, not adding 00:11:46.86\00:11:51.82 to her stress level, but actually doing what he can 00:11:51.86\00:11:54.64 to decrease the stress level will help out significantly. 00:11:54.68\00:11:59.18 Ok, well, is it... the men are really miffed at this point! 00:11:59.22\00:12:03.18 They got to get a job, they're going to have to eat all the 00:12:03.22\00:12:07.15 Brussels sprouts, you've got the broccoli, anything you can do... 00:12:07.18\00:12:11.09 Anything else about the men? 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.19 They're beaten down now but... anything else we can do 00:12:13.22\00:12:16.18 to help them? 00:12:16.22\00:12:17.19 Well, actually if they're on a general exercise program 00:12:17.20\00:12:19.68 during this time that can help them as well. 00:12:19.72\00:12:22.15 Actually, this is all good stuff for you men, 00:12:22.19\00:12:24.55 don't be feeling bad about it, this is 00:12:24.59\00:12:27.26 excellent stuff, actually. 00:12:27.30\00:12:28.73 Should be doing it anyway, right? 00:12:28.76\00:12:30.32 When you understand that your not only helping your yourself 00:12:30.35\00:12:33.21 in this process, but you are helping a little one 00:12:33.24\00:12:37.30 for the rest of their life in doing these habits it really 00:12:37.33\00:12:40.95 takes on an added responsibility and is an added motivational 00:12:40.98\00:12:44.14 factor for the husband to do what's right as he's planning 00:12:44.17\00:12:48.43 on starting a family. 00:12:48.46\00:12:49.91 The Bible says, "No one lives to themselves," I mean 00:12:49.94\00:12:52.65 what we do impacts others. 00:12:52.68\00:12:55.61 I think it's a very profound thing that you've brought to 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.27 our attention because if we thought that way more often 00:12:58.30\00:13:01.51 there would be a lot less problems of every kind. 00:13:01.55\00:13:03.56 Yes, exactly. 00:13:03.60\00:13:05.17 That's why things can be passed on to the third and fourth 00:13:05.21\00:13:07.67 generation and the Bible also talks about that. 00:13:07.71\00:13:10.57 I guess that's part of being a man though, anyway, really 00:13:10.61\00:13:12.73 a definition of being a man would be someone that's going 00:13:12.76\00:13:14.85 to take responsibility. 00:13:14.89\00:13:16.15 Correct. 00:13:16.19\00:13:17.16 We've been talking with Dr. Neal Nedley. 00:13:17.20\00:13:19.95 He's an internist from Ardmore, Oklahoma. 00:13:19.99\00:13:22.71 He's also a best selling author. 00:13:22.74\00:13:24.88 He's written several books, one called "Proof Positive" that 00:13:24.91\00:13:27.54 deals with general health of every kind. 00:13:27.57\00:13:29.72 Another one, "Depression the Way Out" and other books that 00:13:29.75\00:13:32.67 are forth coming as well. 00:13:32.71\00:13:34.54 We've talked a little bit about the dad and conception. 00:13:34.57\00:13:37.80 When we come back we're going to talk about the mom. 00:13:37.84\00:13:41.03 So join us when we come back. 00:13:41.07\00:13:42.37 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:13:43.32\00:13:45.16 shed a few pounds? " 00:15:01.59\00:15:03.92 But today we've been talking with Dr. Nedley about a 00:15:03.95\00:15:06.25 fascinating subject - Health at Every Age. 00:15:06.28\00:15:09.50 As we've been talking with the Dr. we've learned... well Dr. 00:15:09.53\00:15:12.27 what have we learned? 00:15:12.31\00:15:13.28 We've learned that health even begins before we're born 00:15:13.29\00:15:16.32 based on decisions our parents make, our father and mother. 00:15:16.35\00:15:19.53 And we were kind of picking on the dads to start out with 00:15:19.57\00:15:22.71 because they need to take responsibility of 00:15:22.74\00:15:24.72 eating the right things. 00:15:24.75\00:15:25.94 And they really need to stop smoking before the baby is born. 00:15:25.98\00:15:30.37 It dramatically increases the health and prevents childhood 00:15:30.41\00:15:34.77 malignancies. 00:15:34.81\00:15:36.05 You're saying at least a month before conception so that it's 00:15:36.08\00:15:39.01 not damaging the sperm. 00:15:39.04\00:15:40.35 Correct. 00:15:40.38\00:15:41.35 Ok, let's come back now... I know that we've come down hard 00:15:41.39\00:15:45.52 on the men but what about the ladies? 00:15:45.56\00:15:47.32 Do they have some things they need to think about? 00:15:47.36\00:15:49.76 Yes, they are donating half of the genetic material. 00:15:49.80\00:15:53.25 So what we've said about vitamin C can also apply to the 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.70 woman. 00:15:56.74\00:15:57.71 Also, very important is the woman's mental health during 00:15:57.72\00:16:03.71 her pregnancy. 00:16:03.75\00:16:05.35 Actually women who are more stressed out, those that are 00:16:05.39\00:16:12.98 involved in higher stress jobs have about a five-fold increase 00:16:13.02\00:16:17.55 risk in pregnancy complications compared to women who are 00:16:17.59\00:16:21.24 handling stress better and not having all these stressors 00:16:21.27\00:16:24.88 coming at them. 00:16:24.92\00:16:26.06 Well, that kind of comes back to the men again. 00:16:26.10\00:16:30.77 For the ladies themselves, it's good for them to be able to 00:16:30.81\00:16:34.23 start saying, "No, I can't do that"... it's ok to say no. 00:16:34.27\00:16:37.66 It's alright to say, "No. " 00:16:37.70\00:16:38.73 In fact, actually this is even more critical during the 00:16:38.77\00:16:42.51 first pregnancy. 00:16:42.55\00:16:43.55 There is a complication that occurs in one out of every ten 00:16:43.58\00:16:48.25 first pregnancies, called pre-eclampsia. 00:16:48.28\00:16:51.08 Pre-eclampsia... I know that's something... 'pre' means before 00:16:51.12\00:16:53.40 'eclampsia' I'm not sure. 00:16:53.43\00:16:54.86 What's this mean? 00:16:54.90\00:16:55.87 Pre-eclampsia is a condition of the placenta. 00:16:55.88\00:17:00.05 Of course that supplies the nutrients to the baby and 00:17:00.09\00:17:05.10 filters things from the mother and then supplies 00:17:05.13\00:17:08.47 them to the baby. 00:17:08.50\00:17:09.47 The placenta itself can undergo some transformation, 00:17:09.48\00:17:13.86 again caused by free radicals, that actually threaten the 00:17:13.90\00:17:18.04 health of the mother and the baby. 00:17:18.08\00:17:20.17 The mother will get high blood pressure during this time. 00:17:20.21\00:17:23.12 She will get a lot of swelling, in what we call pitting edema, 00:17:23.15\00:17:27.14 where if you press on the ankle it will leave a pit there. 00:17:27.18\00:17:31.10 A urine test will actually show that she is starting to dump 00:17:31.14\00:17:36.12 protein in her urine. 00:17:36.15\00:17:37.25 And when those three things happen, 00:17:37.28\00:17:39.11 then that's pre-eclampsia. 00:17:39.15\00:17:40.79 Meaning that if the trend continues and the trend is not 00:17:40.83\00:17:44.99 reversed, the woman will go into eclampsia. 00:17:45.03\00:17:48.15 The difference there is, the woman actually seizes. 00:17:48.18\00:17:51.47 She goes into a seizure that can be life threatening 00:17:51.51\00:17:54.76 to her and also very life threatening 00:17:54.80\00:17:57.41 for the unborn child. 00:17:57.44\00:17:59.22 And all these can be prevented by decreasing the stress 00:17:59.26\00:18:03.05 and having the kind of nutrition she needs. 00:18:03.08\00:18:05.16 Exactly. 00:18:05.19\00:18:06.16 Interestingly, women who are not working, particularly in 00:18:06.17\00:18:10.80 their second and third trimester actually do better. 00:18:10.83\00:18:16.09 Their risk is less of developing eclampsia. 00:18:16.13\00:18:20.15 And that underscores again the additional reason why it would 00:18:20.18\00:18:24.25 be beneficial for the man to work during this time. 00:18:24.29\00:18:27.35 Well, this is a big thing, I mean there are so many 00:18:27.38\00:18:30.41 single moms out there, you understand that. 00:18:30.45\00:18:32.06 What would you do if you're a single mom? 00:18:32.10\00:18:34.18 Well, there are some other things you can do as well. 00:18:34.21\00:18:36.37 First of all, it's important for you to design your schedule 00:18:36.40\00:18:40.54 and maybe say, "No," to decrease the amount of stress the woman 00:18:40.58\00:18:44.69 is having during the time of the first pregnancy. 00:18:44.72\00:18:47.40 But also important is her diet. 00:18:47.44\00:18:49.26 Because if she is on a diet that is high in anti-oxidants 00:18:49.30\00:18:53.13 that can prevent the free radical damage that occurs 00:18:53.16\00:18:56.57 to the placenta that sets this whole process off. 00:18:56.60\00:18:59.94 I can almost hear a court case coming up where someone says, 00:18:59.97\00:19:02.71 "Hey, you made me work too much" to their employer "and there's 00:19:02.75\00:19:05.45 all these studies that say that if I work this happens. " 00:19:05.49\00:19:08.19 "So you should have let me off work and you pay for this. " 00:19:08.22\00:19:10.89 Well... 00:19:10.93\00:19:12.10 You're not meaning to start this revolution I understand? 00:19:12.14\00:19:15.37 No, no, I'm not meaning to start this, that would get into the 00:19:15.40\00:19:18.53 politics of things, but in reality, it would be healthier 00:19:18.57\00:19:22.75 for the mom to at least not have a stressful job during the time 00:19:22.78\00:19:27.75 that she's carrying the unborn. 00:19:27.79\00:19:29.63 Anything else that moms can do? 00:19:29.67\00:19:31.44 Foods high in anti-oxidants, that's critically important. 00:19:31.48\00:19:36.30 Not only is vitamin C important but also the total anti-oxidant 00:19:36.33\00:19:42.26 burden, in fact there's several nutrients that come down 00:19:42.29\00:19:47.18 as being very favorable in preventing these 00:19:47.21\00:19:50.31 pregnancy complications. 00:19:50.34\00:19:51.67 I think vitamin C is an anti-oxidant. 00:19:51.70\00:19:53.73 Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and that's one of 00:19:53.76\00:19:55.74 the critical nutrients. 00:19:55.77\00:19:56.74 In fact one of the studies is being done currently 00:19:56.75\00:20:01.08 is to actually even give I-V vitamin C to the woman after 00:20:01.12\00:20:05.13 she's gone into pre-eclampsia to try to prevent the eclampsia. 00:20:05.17\00:20:08.69 But the best way of doing this is before you get pre-eclamptic 00:20:08.72\00:20:12.21 to be eating those vitamin C vegetables. 00:20:12.24\00:20:14.31 But not only vitamin C, Don, but also foods high in vitamin E 00:20:14.34\00:20:18.02 Those are the two most potent anti-oxidant nutrients that we 00:20:18.06\00:20:21.71 consume is vitamin C and vitamin E. 00:20:21.74\00:20:24.35 In addition to that vitamin B-2 or riboflavin is critically 00:20:24.39\00:20:29.73 important and selenium an anti-oxidant mineral that is 00:20:29.76\00:20:34.06 present particularly in whole grain foods is critically 00:20:34.10\00:20:38.22 important in helping to prevent this pre-eclampsia. 00:20:38.26\00:20:41.53 Well, let's look a little closer at a list of those. 00:20:41.56\00:20:44.80 I think we have the top 10 anti-oxidants. 00:20:44.84\00:20:46.69 We have the vitamin C for the guy and we need that for the 00:20:46.73\00:20:49.88 gal as well, but we'll look here and see what we have in terms 00:20:49.91\00:20:53.03 of anti-oxidants: 00:20:53.07\00:20:54.20 Garlic not only helps with the anti-oxidant load but it is 00:22:11.82\00:22:17.72 an anti-bacterial agent and can prevent infections. 00:22:17.76\00:22:21.38 Is it ok for a pregnant lady to take garlic? 00:22:21.42\00:22:25.90 Oh, yes, it's actually healthy for her. 00:22:25.94\00:22:28.54 It can prevent the pre-eclampsia and other complications 00:22:28.57\00:22:31.85 we've been talking about. 00:22:31.88\00:22:33.13 Not just before conception but it's ok, even if they get a 00:22:33.17\00:22:36.51 little cold, to be taking garlic during their pregnancy? 00:22:36.55\00:22:39.86 That's right. 00:22:39.89\00:22:40.86 There are studies indicating that even garlic gargles can 00:22:40.90\00:22:45.69 help when we have a cold and things of that nature. 00:22:45.73\00:22:48.07 I can see people rushing to their sinks right now! 00:22:48.10\00:22:50.41 Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle! 00:22:50.45\00:22:52.26 Getting these foods high in anti-oxidants is good for the 00:22:52.29\00:22:57.58 mom and for the dad. 00:22:57.61\00:22:59.00 I mean I can see them all going to the super market right now 00:22:59.03\00:23:02.47 and getting all those things together. 00:23:02.51\00:23:04.89 What else can the mom do? 00:23:04.92\00:23:06.50 In addition to that, it's important for her to 00:23:06.53\00:23:09.95 avoid toxins. 00:23:09.98\00:23:10.95 She needs to also not be smoking. 00:23:10.96\00:23:13.56 Critically important, she should not be consuming any alcohol 00:23:13.60\00:23:18.44 whatsoever. 00:23:18.47\00:23:19.44 Alcohol can play with the fetal brain and can actually decrease 00:23:19.47\00:23:24.32 the brain ability of that child and that person throughout life. 00:23:24.36\00:23:29.18 How about caffeine? 00:23:29.21\00:23:30.49 Caffeine is actually is best to avoid as well. 00:23:30.52\00:23:33.91 There are a few studies indicating that the higher 00:23:33.95\00:23:36.86 the caffeine consumption the lower the birth weight 00:23:36.89\00:23:40.44 in the child and of course the lower the birth weight 00:23:40.48\00:23:43.96 the higher the complication risk for that child throughout life. 00:23:43.99\00:23:48.32 If the birth weight is lower, does that mean that their 00:23:48.36\00:23:50.94 head will be smaller and the brain will be smaller too? 00:23:50.97\00:23:53.52 Actually it does. 00:23:53.55\00:23:55.12 There are studies indicating the higher the birth weight 00:23:55.15\00:23:58.66 the higher volume of the brain and actually the larger 00:23:58.69\00:24:02.16 the brain will become. 00:24:02.20\00:24:03.70 Now that's up to a point. 00:24:03.74\00:24:05.50 You can get too large. 00:24:05.53\00:24:07.64 Like a diabetic baby? 00:24:07.67\00:24:09.28 Right, exactly. 00:24:09.31\00:24:10.39 That's not going to be beneficial. 00:24:10.42\00:24:13.34 For babies, particularly under 10 pounds, the closer we get 00:24:13.37\00:24:17.84 to 8, 9 pounds babies actually the healthier they tend to be 00:24:17.87\00:24:22.77 throughout the rest of their life. 00:24:22.80\00:24:24.51 So decreasing the stress, not really working as much, at least 00:24:24.54\00:24:30.82 the second and third trimester, making sure they get 00:24:30.85\00:24:33.71 anti-oxidants, making sure they avoid toxins,... 00:24:33.74\00:24:36.82 anything else? 00:24:36.85\00:24:37.82 Well, one of the other toxins that many of the medical 00:24:37.83\00:24:40.57 associations are picking up is mercury. 00:24:40.60\00:24:42.95 The highest amount of mercury in the food supply is in fish 00:24:42.98\00:24:48.86 and sea food. 00:24:48.89\00:24:49.86 Many of the medical associations are telling pregnant women to 00:24:49.87\00:24:53.85 avoid fish and sea food consumption. 00:24:53.88\00:24:56.44 So say goodbye to Red Lobster? 00:24:56.47\00:24:58.58 That's right because mercury is there and the mercury can get 00:24:58.61\00:25:03.51 into the fetus, it does cross the placenta and cause problems. 00:25:03.54\00:25:07.23 What kind of problems would it cause? 00:25:07.26\00:25:08.51 It can cause anywhere from infertility before they get 00:25:08.54\00:25:12.51 pregnant to if they're already pregnant causing even a higher 00:25:12.54\00:25:17.82 risk of depression in the baby once it's born. 00:25:17.85\00:25:20.87 Oh! Ok so the people out there that are having problems with 00:25:20.90\00:25:23.22 fertility it might be good to just say "no" to the sea food 00:25:23.25\00:25:26.95 and go see some different food, that being anti-oxidants, and 00:25:26.98\00:25:30.19 maybe they'll turn that around. 00:25:30.22\00:25:31.45 Anti-oxidants and plant foods that are high in Omega 3. 00:25:31.48\00:25:35.26 You know we have this dichotomy in fish where they have Omega 3 00:25:35.29\00:25:40.48 which is beneficial, but in the industrial society in which we 00:25:40.51\00:25:43.95 are living in today, a fish is more toxin laden 00:25:43.98\00:25:47.18 than ever before. 00:25:47.21\00:25:48.58 And so the answer to that is to get the Omega 3 00:25:48.61\00:25:50.85 from plant sources. 00:25:50.88\00:25:52.07 Now do you have a book coming out that's going to have all 00:25:52.10\00:25:54.04 pre-conception recipes? 00:25:54.07\00:25:56.23 Yes, actually, we're entitling the book, 00:25:56.26\00:25:59.72 "Health at Every Age.
