Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:45.99\00:00:47.89 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:47.92\00:00:49.50 We're glad that you've joined us today. 00:00:49.53\00:00:51.19 Today we're going to be talking with Dr. Tim Arnott 00:00:51.22\00:00:54.53 Dr. Arnott is a physician at the 00:00:54.56\00:00:57.34 Lifestyle Center of America in Oklahoma 00:00:57.37\00:00:59.66 where he helps treat the major diseases in the Western culture 00:00:59.69\00:01:03.74 and treats those through lifestyle. 00:01:03.77\00:01:06.03 And today we're going to be talking about something 00:01:06.06\00:01:07.85 that afflicts 1 in 3, some statistics say, 00:01:07.88\00:01:11.25 1 in 3 American males, that is cancer of the prostrate 00:01:11.28\00:01:17.12 Did I say that right? Prostate - that's right. 00:01:17.15\00:01:18.98 Prostate... and tell us a little bit about this. 00:01:19.01\00:01:21.85 Is there any good news that we have about this thing that 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.30 commonly afflicts most American males. 00:01:25.33\00:01:28.85 Well there is good news... and the good news is that 00:01:28.88\00:01:30.88 there are many researchers today who are looking into 00:01:30.91\00:01:33.80 the underlying cause of prostate cancer, 00:01:33.83\00:01:36.52 and they're coming up with some very interesting information... 00:01:36.55\00:01:40.34 And one of the things that we can start off with is that 00:01:40.37\00:01:44.46 there are important nutrients that the body needs 00:01:44.49\00:01:48.13 to have a strong immune system... 00:01:48.16\00:01:50.46 To have a strong ability to fight off cancer. 00:01:50.49\00:01:53.52 And so that's good news? 00:01:53.55\00:01:55.63 How is that good news? 00:01:55.66\00:01:57.03 Well it's good news because we could ADD things to our diet. 00:01:57.06\00:01:59.74 We could add things to our lifestyle that could actually 00:01:59.77\00:02:02.12 lower our risk for this important disease. 00:02:02.15\00:02:04.05 Okay, so the good news is that we can actually 00:02:04.08\00:02:06.18 eat things or do things that help us NOT be one of the 00:02:06.21\00:02:08.97 statistics of 1 in 3... Absolutely 00:02:09.00\00:02:11.05 And I would mention right at the outset here that 00:02:11.08\00:02:13.77 this information is not only important for men 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.53 and for avoiding prostate cancer 00:02:16.56\00:02:18.66 but it's important for avoiding cancer in general... 00:02:18.69\00:02:21.95 So it's also important for women. 00:02:21.98\00:02:23.59 Okay, you women that are watching today - come back! 00:02:23.62\00:02:26.33 Don't leave us - this is going to help you as well. 00:02:26.36\00:02:29.31 We're going to be talking about physiology, 00:02:30.10\00:02:32.02 and we're going to be talking about how the Creator has 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.80 designed our body so that if you cooperate with 00:02:33.83\00:02:37.78 His physiology by what you eat, what you drink, what you do, 00:02:37.81\00:02:41.37 you could strengthen your ability to fight cancer. 00:02:41.40\00:02:44.05 Some people have said there's a substance called "selenium" 00:02:44.08\00:02:47.07 that protects the prostate? 00:02:47.10\00:02:49.82 That's right - there are studies going on right now... 00:02:49.85\00:02:51.60 Looking at perspective studies where they are giving 00:02:51.63\00:02:53.92 one group - placebo, a water pill. 00:02:53.95\00:02:56.28 They're giving another group selenium. 00:02:56.31\00:02:58.40 And what is selenium? 00:02:58.43\00:02:59.80 Selenium is a trace mineral and it's found in WHOLE GRAINS. 00:02:59.83\00:03:05.31 I emphasize WHOLE GRAINS because MOST grains that Americans 00:03:05.34\00:03:09.00 eat are refined and processed. 00:03:09.03\00:03:11.80 We call it "enriched" in this country, 00:03:11.83\00:03:13.78 but one thing they don't put back is selenium. 00:03:13.81\00:03:18.13 And selenium is important because there is an 00:03:18.16\00:03:20.68 enzyme system that the Creator put inside of our bloodstream 00:03:20.71\00:03:25.22 and this machinery - its job is to mop up, to get rid of, 00:03:25.25\00:03:31.26 to sponge away - free radicals. 00:03:31.29\00:03:35.06 Free radicals are highly reactive, highly unstable 00:03:35.09\00:03:38.86 oxygen chemicals that are being thrown off, 00:03:38.89\00:03:41.45 being produced by the cells of our body continually. 00:03:41.48\00:03:45.31 The Loma Linda Nutrition and Health Letter stated 00:03:45.34\00:03:49.84 some months ago that every cell in the body, 00:03:49.87\00:03:53.06 the DNA of every cell, the genes in the genetic material 00:03:53.09\00:03:56.92 has about 10,000 hits every day from these free radicals. 00:03:56.95\00:04:00.54 From every cell - in every cell? EVERY CELL 00:04:00.57\00:04:02.53 So, in other words, if you're going to protect yourself 00:04:02.56\00:04:06.59 from damaged DNA which is the cause of cancer, 00:04:06.62\00:04:10.26 then you better be able to get rid of these free radicals. 00:04:10.29\00:04:13.13 Well, you can do that with this enzyme system 00:04:13.16\00:04:15.18 that the Creator put in our bloodstream... 00:04:15.21\00:04:16.72 And this enzyme system glutathione 00:04:16.75\00:04:19.78 depends upon selenium... 00:04:19.81\00:04:22.60 And so if you don't have enough selenium coming IN, 00:04:22.63\00:04:25.37 the body is not going to be able to make enough of the 00:04:25.40\00:04:28.12 enzyme system to protect you adequately. 00:04:28.15\00:04:31.40 So this is like our homeland security system of the body. 00:04:31.43\00:04:34.01 That's EXACTLY right! Gotta have the selenium! 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.39 That is exactly right. So - like my body right now, 00:04:36.42\00:04:38.77 right inside it's just popping! 00:04:38.80\00:04:40.78 There are all kinds of different things happening, is that right? 00:04:40.81\00:04:42.20 You can think of it that way. 00:04:42.23\00:04:43.60 I'm like a popcorn machine! That's exactly right 00:04:43.63\00:04:46.37 And that's why Dr. Brooks at Duke University 00:04:46.40\00:04:49.66 has discovered that individuals with the HIGHEST selenium levels 00:04:49.69\00:04:54.56 have about a 70% LOWER risk of prostate cancer 00:04:54.59\00:05:00.81 than those men with the lowest selenium level. 00:05:00.84\00:05:04.84 So 70% lower risk - all those things are 00:05:04.87\00:05:08.12 smashing around inside but if you got the selenium, 00:05:08.15\00:05:11.16 they can make sure that doesn't impact you. 00:05:11.19\00:05:14.15 That's one of the factors, but again, this is an 00:05:14.18\00:05:15.80 enzyme system that ALL of us have - men and women, 00:05:15.83\00:05:19.44 and so they've actually recently shown that individuals with 00:05:19.47\00:05:24.02 the highest glutathione activity in their bloodstream 00:05:24.05\00:05:27.75 have the lowest risk of developing a coronary event - 00:05:27.78\00:05:31.14 a heart attack or a bypass... 00:05:31.17\00:05:33.12 So it not only protects from prostate but also heart attack. 00:05:33.15\00:05:37.58 Because these free radicals not only damage DNA - 00:05:37.61\00:05:40.36 which can lead to cancer if you get enough damaged hits, 00:05:40.39\00:05:43.77 and you get them in the right places on your DNA, 00:05:43.80\00:05:45.71 but the free radicals can also damage cholesterol, 00:05:45.74\00:05:49.24 oxidizing it and that's what leads to coronary artery disease 00:05:49.27\00:05:52.37 So again, what's the highest... 00:05:52.40\00:05:53.77 Give me the top 3 highest foods in selenium. 00:05:53.80\00:05:55.93 Well, the very highest food is Brazil nuts. 00:05:55.96\00:06:00.16 BRAZIL NUTS... high in fats? 00:06:00.19\00:06:03.18 Well, they are high in GOOD fats. 00:06:03.21\00:06:05.82 You see, the Creator put GOOD fats in the nuts. 00:06:05.85\00:06:08.64 It's the animal products that have the saturated fat, 00:06:08.67\00:06:12.20 and it's packaged foods that have 00:06:12.23\00:06:13.62 the trans fatty acids... those are the bad fats. 00:06:13.65\00:06:16.21 Brazil nuts... what's another high food with selenium? 00:06:16.25\00:06:18.95 Well before we move away from Brazil nuts, 00:06:18.98\00:06:20.95 3 Brazil nuts will have 400 mcg of selenium, 00:06:20.98\00:06:25.24 and that is the amount being used in a study right now 00:06:25.27\00:06:29.27 to see if men can actually lower their risk of prostate cancer. 00:06:29.30\00:06:32.48 So you can join the study and get the benefits 00:06:32.51\00:06:36.01 before 10 years are up and they finally tell us... 00:06:36.04\00:06:39.06 So take 3 nuts a day... 00:06:39.09\00:06:40.46 Three nuts a day or you can get whole grains. 00:06:40.49\00:06:42.81 Red winter wheat - different whole grains, garlic... 00:06:42.84\00:06:48.25 There are a number of good sources, 00:06:48.28\00:06:50.51 but whole grains are really the one you want to 00:06:50.54\00:06:52.26 remember and Brazil nuts. 00:06:52.30\00:06:53.88 Okay, about that stuff we can eat, 00:06:53.92\00:06:56.21 what about stuff that we drink or beverages... 00:06:56.24\00:07:00.38 I mean a lot of people in America drink the 00:07:00.41\00:07:03.12 good old cow's milk. 00:07:03.15\00:07:04.52 Is that good for the prostate situation? 00:07:04.55\00:07:07.19 Well actually - a very interesting study, 00:07:07.22\00:07:09.65 the Adventist Health Study, Dr. Jacobsen and his colleagues 00:07:09.68\00:07:14.19 there in Norway, found in the Adventist Health Study, 00:07:14.22\00:07:17.78 that men who were drinking soymilk, 00:07:17.81\00:07:22.16 more than one serving a day, 00:07:22.19\00:07:23.59 so, you know, 1-1/2- 2 servings a day of soymilk, 00:07:23.62\00:07:27.17 had again about 70% lower risk of prostate cancer. 00:07:27.20\00:07:32.92 So this graphic - help me with it... 00:07:32.95\00:07:34.52 It says 0.3 there, what's that? 00:07:34.55\00:07:36.51 Well, what you want to remember about the graphic 00:07:36.54\00:07:38.41 is the shorter that bar, the BETTER... 00:07:38.44\00:07:42.21 Okay, so soymilk is 0.3 versus 1.0 and so you're saying... 00:07:42.24\00:07:45.62 1 is like 10 minus 3 is 70%... That's exactly right 00:07:45.65\00:07:49.43 So that 0.3 is only a third of the prostate cancer risk 00:07:49.46\00:07:56.12 of someone who does not drink soymilk rarely or not at all. 00:07:56.15\00:07:58.95 So do you drink soymilk? Yes I do 00:07:58.98\00:08:01.64 Do you like it? Well, I must say this... 00:08:01.67\00:08:04.23 It's wet and it gets the cereal moist, 00:08:04.26\00:08:06.78 but I don't drink it as a beverage. Okay 00:08:06.81\00:08:09.41 But there are some that are reasonably tasty. 00:08:09.44\00:08:15.48 There are all different types of soymilk... Yes there are 00:08:15.51\00:08:17.46 What about the chocolate soymilk? 00:08:17.49\00:08:18.86 Well, I'll tell ya - some of the better soymilks are 00:08:18.89\00:08:22.17 going to be those that do not have cane juice 00:08:22.20\00:08:24.51 as a sweetener for one thing. Oh, I see... 00:08:24.54\00:08:26.32 Cane juice is a higher... 00:08:26.35\00:08:28.08 BUT this study didn't get into that right? No 00:08:28.11\00:08:31.45 If you've been switched to chocolate soymilk, you're okay? 00:08:31.48\00:08:35.50 Uhhh - I think as we move along, we're going to discover 00:08:35.53\00:08:38.62 it probably wouldn't be a wise idea. 00:08:38.65\00:08:40.17 Because remember - 60% of Americans are either 00:08:40.20\00:08:43.33 overweight or obese which means they are insulin resistant, 00:08:43.36\00:08:46.68 which means if you're taking refined sugars, 00:08:46.71\00:08:49.32 and they put more of the refined sugar sweeteners 00:08:49.35\00:08:51.70 in these chocolate beverages, carob-sweetened beverages, 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.37 then you're going to have higher insulin levels, 00:08:54.40\00:08:56.73 and higher insulin drives cell division to levels that are 00:08:56.76\00:09:02.29 cancer-promoting... Boy, you took that away 00:09:02.32\00:09:03.69 from me so fast, doctor! 00:09:03.72\00:09:05.09 I was trying to get chocolate soymilk for everybody watching, 00:09:05.12\00:09:08.00 and you didn't quite let us have that. 00:09:08.03\00:09:09.78 It might be a place to start. 00:09:09.81\00:09:11.42 But switching from the cow's milk 00:09:11.45\00:09:14.27 to the soymilk is good. Absolutely! 00:09:14.31\00:09:16.09 All right, well you can keep that chocolate soymilk 00:09:16.13\00:09:19.54 just for a couple of minutes; 00:09:19.57\00:09:20.94 you might have to take it away later in the program. 00:09:20.97\00:09:22.42 It might be something to start with. 00:09:22.45\00:09:25.59 Well, let's move on then... 00:09:25.62\00:09:27.31 What about - you said that there's a connection between 00:09:27.34\00:09:30.23 lowering the prostate cancer risk and SUNLIGHT. 00:09:30.26\00:09:33.75 That's right - sunlight as we mentioned on other programs, 00:09:33.78\00:09:37.88 individuals who actually are getting the MOST sun exposure, 00:09:37.91\00:09:43.08 and that means they have the highest vitamin D levels, 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.96 specifically, the highest 25-hydroxyvitamin D level... 00:09:45.99\00:09:50.70 these men have the lowest risk of prostate cancer. 00:09:50.73\00:09:53.61 So, what part of the body should we be exposing? 00:09:53.64\00:09:56.60 Is this location-dependent? 00:09:56.63\00:09:58.53 Well actually, you only need to 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.31 expose the face, the hands, and the arms 00:10:01.34\00:10:05.62 15 minutes 3 times a week to get the minimum 00:10:05.65\00:10:10.12 amount of vitamin D that you need to maintain health. 00:10:10.15\00:10:13.24 That doesn't sound that hard at all... It's really not 00:10:13.27\00:10:15.95 But for someone that works nightshift... 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.57 It would be - for someone who works nightshift, 00:10:17.61\00:10:21.25 frankly, you can get a full spectrum light 00:10:21.28\00:10:23.81 that does put out ultraviolet. 00:10:23.84\00:10:26.07 Now you wouldn't want to look at it, 00:10:26.10\00:10:27.47 but if you were in its presence, face, hands and arms 00:10:27.50\00:10:29.99 you can make vitamin D that way as well. 00:10:30.02\00:10:31.78 So you have a graphic here about vitamin D 00:10:31.81\00:10:34.85 that we want to look at. 00:10:34.88\00:10:36.25 Yes, it graphically will show that individuals with 00:10:36.28\00:10:40.93 the LOWEST vitamin D levels are at 3-1/2 times GREATER RISK 00:10:40.96\00:10:48.54 of prostate cancer. 00:10:48.57\00:10:50.55 Okay, so that 3.5 is the lowest vitamin D level, 00:10:50.58\00:10:53.31 and that shows their risk at the bottom. 00:10:53.34\00:10:54.94 Yes, it shows their risk MUCH GREATER - 3-1/2 times greater 00:10:54.97\00:10:58.29 than those individuals with the highest vitamin D levels 00:10:58.32\00:11:00.96 which the lowest risk would be set at 1 and then the research - 00:11:00.99\00:11:04.47 What if someone already has prostate cancer, you know? 00:11:04.50\00:11:10.13 That's a very interesting question... 00:11:10.16\00:11:11.53 In fact, Dr. Dean Ornish has looked, and other researchers 00:11:11.56\00:11:15.63 at Duke University, for example, 00:11:15.66\00:11:17.08 have looked at individuals who already have prostate cancer, 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.79 and they have taken these prostate cancer cells, 00:11:19.82\00:11:22.93 and they put them in the cell culture, 00:11:22.96\00:11:24.80 and they've exposed them to serum of the patients... 00:11:24.83\00:11:28.67 for example, Dr. Ornish - serum of the patients 00:11:28.70\00:11:32.91 BEFORE they went on a special lifestyle program, 00:11:32.94\00:11:35.43 and then the prostate cancer cells AFTER a lifestyle program 00:11:35.46\00:11:40.63 And, for example, one of those lifestyle programs, 00:11:40.66\00:11:42.98 they simply put these individuals on a diet 00:11:43.01\00:11:46.01 that was about 10% fat and that's basically a plant diet, 00:11:46.04\00:11:50.10 a whole plant diet is about what it is, 10% fat... 00:11:50.13\00:11:52.61 They put them on flaxseed, a couple of tablespoons a day, 00:11:52.64\00:11:55.55 some exercise and they were actually able to show that 00:11:55.58\00:11:59.19 those cancer cells died off faster and they divided 00:11:59.22\00:12:02.93 less rapidly than when they were put with the serum 00:12:02.96\00:12:07.81 BEFORE they went on the program. 00:12:07.84\00:12:09.21 So if someone has got that diagnosis, 00:12:09.24\00:12:10.91 go ahead and start doing this stuff right now - ABSOLUTELY 00:12:10.94\00:12:13.65 and it will help it not, at least progress. 00:12:13.68\00:12:16.50 It may help it slow down, it may be less of a problem 00:12:16.53\00:12:20.17 as far as advancing, you may actually buy some time. 00:12:20.20\00:12:23.01 So, run outside in the sun... but seriously 00:12:23.04\00:12:27.28 what is the MOST important thing a person can do 00:12:27.31\00:12:30.70 to avoid prostate cancer? 00:12:30.73\00:12:33.10 Well, Dr. Singh and his colleagues have actually 00:12:33.13\00:12:35.66 done a very interesting study on some Chinese men. 00:12:35.69\00:12:38.29 And, they actually took men and they watched these individuals; 00:12:38.32\00:12:43.41 they divided them into 2 categories. 00:12:43.44\00:12:44.81 They divided them into a category of the LOWEST distance 00:12:44.84\00:12:48.12 around the waist, in other words, the SMALLEST 00:12:48.15\00:12:50.84 waist, the LOWEST insulin level and watched for their 00:12:50.87\00:12:54.84 incidence of prostate cancer... 00:12:54.87\00:12:57.55 And then they took men with the LARGEST waist, 00:12:57.58\00:12:59.99 and the HIGHEST insulin level and they watched for 00:13:00.02\00:13:03.10 THEIR development of prostate cancer, 00:13:03.13\00:13:05.14 and what they discovered was... 00:13:05.17\00:13:06.81 Individuals with the greatest waist size, 00:13:06.84\00:13:09.14 and the highest INSULIN levels had up to 8-fold greater risk 00:13:09.17\00:13:14.41 of prostate cancer. 00:13:14.44\00:13:16.24 I think you have this on a graphic, don't you? 00:13:16.27\00:13:17.64 Yes we do... in fact, it dramatically shows 00:13:17.67\00:13:20.84 that if you have a lot of insulin resistance, 00:13:20.87\00:13:24.23 which means you're carrying a lot of extra fatty tissue 00:13:24.26\00:13:27.69 in the abdomen and you have a high fasting insulin level, 00:13:27.72\00:13:33.70 you could be up to 8-fold greater risk of prostate cancer, 00:13:33.73\00:13:37.44 and this is one of the greatest differences in risk that we see. 00:13:37.47\00:13:41.36 So, if I see someone that looks like a pear instead of an apple, 00:13:41.39\00:13:44.47 in other words they have that big belly and they are diabetic, 00:13:44.50\00:13:49.85 and they know that or even if they don't know that... 00:13:49.88\00:13:52.15 With those individuals, also would typically get 00:13:52.18\00:13:55.29 prostate cancer EARLIER in life, 00:13:55.32\00:13:57.51 and it will be more of an aggressive prostate cancer. 00:13:57.54\00:14:00.08 It will be a higher grade and so 00:14:00.11\00:14:02.51 it will be more difficult to deal with. 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.51 Many prostate cancers are indolent and may not be 00:14:04.54\00:14:08.66 anything clinically that you 00:14:08.69\00:14:11.23 need to do to really help your situation... 00:14:11.26\00:14:13.02 BUT, if you're carrying extra weight in the midsection, 00:14:13.05\00:14:15.73 high insulin levels, those are often more aggressive. 00:14:15.76\00:14:19.94 We're talking with Dr. Tim Arnott 00:14:19.97\00:14:21.64 We're talking about prostate cancer. 00:14:21.67\00:14:23.93 It afflicts many people, the same principles; 00:14:23.96\00:14:26.13 however, that we've talked about in relationship 00:14:26.16\00:14:28.49 to what men can do to avoid, prevent or at least 00:14:28.52\00:14:31.22 stop the development, if it is already going on, 00:14:31.25\00:14:33.64 of prostate cancer, are applicable to women. 00:14:33.67\00:14:36.17 When we come back, we're going to continue 00:14:36.20\00:14:38.10 this gripping conversation, we hope you join us. 00:14:38.13\00:14:41.75 Have you found yourself wishing 00:14:41.78\00:14:43.15 that you could shed a few pounds? 00:14:43.18\00:14:44.74 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:14:44.77\00:14:46.92 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.68 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:14:49.71\00:14:52.88 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:14:52.91\00:14:55.67 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:55.70\00:14:58.60 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:14:58.63\00:15:00.73 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:00.76\00:15:03.03 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:15:03.06\00:15:05.59 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:15:05.62\00:15:08.49 by thousands who were able to eat more and lose weight 00:15:08.52\00:15:11.63 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:15:11.66\00:15:14.37 through lifestyle medicine. 00:15:14.40\00:15:16.00 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:15:16.03\00:15:19.87 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach 00:15:19.90\00:15:22.66 to eating, nutrition and lifestyle changes that can 00:15:22.69\00:15:25.70 help you prevent heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. 00:15:25.73\00:15:29.22 Call or write today for your free copy of... 00:15:29.25\00:15:31.24 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:31.27\00:15:33.11 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier you! 00:15:33.14\00:15:36.28 It's ABSOLUTELY free of charge so call or write today. 00:15:36.31\00:15:41.30 Welcome back, we've been talking with Dr. Tim Arnott 00:15:41.33\00:15:43.93 We've been talking about prostate cancer, 00:15:43.96\00:15:45.83 and doctor, as we were talking about this, 00:15:45.86\00:15:48.57 you talked about some of the things you do there at the 00:15:48.60\00:15:50.55 Lifestyle Center of America, you're a physician there, 00:15:50.58\00:15:55.28 and you help people... 00:15:55.31\00:15:56.68 Do many people come in - are they diagnosed with 00:15:56.71\00:15:58.48 this while they're there? 00:15:58.51\00:15:59.88 Diagnosed with prostate cancer? Yes 00:15:59.91\00:16:01.72 Well, one of the tests that you could do, of course is the PSA 00:16:01.75\00:16:04.93 which doesn't give you a diagnosis, 00:16:04.96\00:16:06.81 but it can tip you off that perhaps you need a biopsy. 00:16:06.84\00:16:10.20 So I would say that the diagnosis of cancer is not 00:16:10.23\00:16:14.65 something that we specialize in. 00:16:14.68\00:16:16.05 What we do is to deal with insulin resistance. I see 00:16:16.08\00:16:20.33 And insulin resistance is the underlying cause of 00:16:20.36\00:16:24.39 high insulin levels. 00:16:24.42\00:16:25.85 Many Americans have very high insulin levels. 00:16:25.88\00:16:28.61 Insulin is a growth-promoting hormone. 00:16:28.64\00:16:31.92 It is a hormone that helps to encourage cell division. 00:16:31.95\00:16:36.32 Cancer is cell division, too rapid, out-of-control, 00:16:36.35\00:16:40.04 and so high insulin levels could encourage 00:16:40.07\00:16:42.58 the whole process of cancer formation. 00:16:42.61\00:16:44.84 In our first segment, we talked about the fact 00:16:44.87\00:16:48.02 that selenium can give protection 00:16:48.05\00:16:50.33 against prostate cancer, and about Brazil nuts, 00:16:50.36\00:16:53.47 and how they're very high in that. 00:16:53.50\00:16:54.87 Are there any other foods that are very helpful 00:16:54.90\00:16:58.39 to us if we're trying to prevent prostate cancer? 00:16:58.42\00:17:01.46 Yes and I want to say again that for those women who are 00:17:01.49\00:17:05.01 listening, we're going to be talking about some foods 00:17:05.04\00:17:07.76 ...These foods are important not only to help us protect 00:17:07.79\00:17:11.18 prostate but to help us protect from breast cancer, 00:17:11.21\00:17:14.54 from coronary disease, so these are important 00:17:14.57\00:17:16.84 protective foods for both the genders 00:17:16.87\00:17:20.80 and many of the diseases that we deal with - 00:17:20.84\00:17:23.39 cancer, heart disease and stroke, for example. 00:17:23.43\00:17:25.95 And one of these, we're going to mention first of all 00:17:25.98\00:17:28.26 is tomatoes! 00:17:28.29\00:17:31.64 Dr. Giovannucci and his colleagues have discovered 00:17:31.67\00:17:34.45 that individuals who take in MORE than 10 servings 00:17:34.48\00:17:38.40 of tomato a week, have about 35% lower risk 00:17:38.43\00:17:43.73 of prostate cancer as in men who 00:17:43.76\00:17:46.30 are taking in 1-1/2 or fewer servings. 00:17:46.34\00:17:49.22 So this is your recipe... 00:17:49.25\00:17:52.35 You know, many of us are short on time and yet we 00:17:57.03\00:17:59.50 don't like to eat our food dry without any real taste... 00:17:59.53\00:18:05.33 And, maybe we don't have time to get the blender out, 00:18:05.36\00:18:07.86 and put together a cashew sauce or a tofu sour cream sauce. 00:18:07.90\00:18:12.95 Just tomatoes! Just open a can of tomato puree! 00:18:12.98\00:18:16.29 There is no salt added to tomato puree. 00:18:16.32\00:18:19.31 Many of you have tried to find 00:18:19.34\00:18:20.90 tomato products without salt, it's very difficult. 00:18:20.94\00:18:25.39 Tomato puree... just pour it over and it is lycopene 00:18:25.42\00:18:29.83 is what causes that RED COLOR in the tomato. 00:18:29.86\00:18:34.49 And that lycopene is a red pigment that protects the tomato 00:18:34.52\00:18:39.05 from the ionizing damaging ultraviolet radiation 00:18:39.08\00:18:42.54 from the sun and when you eat that pigment, 00:18:42.57\00:18:44.96 it protects YOUR cells from the free radicals that we were 00:18:44.99\00:18:48.73 talking about earlier in the program. 00:18:48.76\00:18:50.38 So instead of that free radical hitting your DNA, 00:18:50.41\00:18:53.93 damaging it, breaking a strand which can lead to cancer, 00:18:53.96\00:18:57.88 it hits the lycopene. 00:18:57.91\00:18:59.72 So it can't be green tomatoes, it's got to be red tomatoes. 00:18:59.75\00:19:01.74 Well, actually not... any color is protective. 00:19:01.77\00:19:05.83 Any color is protective - it's just that researchers like to 00:19:05.86\00:19:09.65 look at one, for example, and they like to do studies with one 00:19:09.68\00:19:13.11 But, they've actually shown if you do 3/4 of a cup 00:19:13.14\00:19:17.68 of tomato sauce a day, you can significantly lower... 00:19:17.71\00:19:20.67 Ketchup protective? YES, actually... 00:19:20.70\00:19:23.78 I mean, I wouldn't recommend that because of the 00:19:23.81\00:19:26.26 SUGAR that's in there and high sugar intake 00:19:26.29\00:19:29.38 can actually increase your risk of cancer... 00:19:29.41\00:19:30.78 But yes, the lycopene in ketchup can actually be protective. 00:19:30.81\00:19:35.99 In fact, MANY of the foods that are protective of Americans 00:19:36.02\00:19:39.24 are not really the healthiest foods but there is something 00:19:39.27\00:19:41.96 healthy in there and they still get some of the benefit. 00:19:41.99\00:19:44.31 What's the next one on our list here? 00:19:44.34\00:19:45.88 Well, one of the other things that we should mention is 00:19:45.91\00:19:49.09 just dairy products, for example. 00:19:49.12\00:19:50.88 Well we have Brazil nuts here... 00:19:50.91\00:19:52.33 Okay, well we'll talk about Brazil nuts. 00:19:52.36\00:19:54.05 Brazil nuts, again, are the selenium. 00:19:54.08\00:19:56.54 The selenium in Brazil nuts is very important for 00:19:56.57\00:19:59.55 feeding the glutathione reductase enzyme 00:19:59.58\00:20:03.43 which job it is to get rid of those free radicals. 00:20:03.46\00:20:06.43 Those ping-pong balls smashing around in the body! 00:20:06.46\00:20:09.42 You know, DISEASE is largely 00:20:09.46\00:20:11.07 an issue of what you do with free radicals. 00:20:11.10\00:20:13.23 Whether they just ravage through the body 00:20:13.26\00:20:15.44 and damage your tissue at will 00:20:15.47\00:20:17.22 or WHETHER you have taken into your body these pigments, 00:20:17.25\00:20:21.76 these colors whether it's the red of the grape 00:20:21.79\00:20:25.64 or whether it's the purple of the blackberry, 00:20:25.67\00:20:27.82 whether it's the green of spinach... 00:20:27.85\00:20:30.53 Spinach is one of the highest 00:20:30.56\00:20:31.93 antioxidant foods in the vegetable kingdom. 00:20:31.96\00:20:34.20 And, in bringing those into the body can get rid of those 00:20:34.23\00:20:37.18 free radicals at protecting your prostate, your breasts... 00:20:37.21\00:20:39.80 What's the next one on our list here, we have... 00:20:39.83\00:20:41.83 Okay... switch from skim milk to soy. 00:20:41.87\00:20:47.22 Recently in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" 00:20:47.25\00:20:49.52 there was an article that showed that individuals who drink 00:20:49.55\00:20:53.38 the most dairy products - and we're talking about 00:20:53.41\00:20:55.84 2-3 servings a day - they have 00:20:55.87\00:20:58.63 the highest risk of prostate cancer versus men who 00:20:58.66\00:21:02.42 use the LEAST dairy. 00:21:02.45\00:21:03.82 It's about a 35% increase risk in prostate cancer 00:21:03.85\00:21:07.56 for those men using the most dairy. 00:21:07.59\00:21:09.55 So, putting that together with our earlier study 00:21:09.58\00:21:13.54 by Dr. Jacobsen, if you switch from dairy to soy, 00:21:13.57\00:21:18.19 you're going to get a significant improvement 00:21:18.22\00:21:21.84 in prostate cancer risk. 00:21:21.87\00:21:23.26 Okay, our next thing on our list... 00:21:23.29\00:21:25.15 We're just going through a number of these... 00:21:25.18\00:21:27.03 We have - Choose scrambled tofu in place of eggs. 00:21:27.06\00:21:32.19 You know, it's well known that testosterone, for example, 00:21:32.22\00:21:37.17 increases the production of prostate cancer. 00:21:37.20\00:21:40.55 In fact, one of the reasons why men are discouraged from 00:21:40.58\00:21:44.19 injecting it or having testosterone injections 00:21:44.22\00:21:46.80 is it could increase your risk of prostate cancer. 00:21:46.83\00:21:49.34 Well there are, in the foods that the Creator has made, 00:21:49.37\00:21:53.15 there are steroid-like compounds. 00:21:53.18\00:21:57.14 We call them phytoestrogens, for example, phytoprogesterones, 00:21:57.17\00:22:00.85 phytotestosterones. 00:22:00.88\00:22:02.25 These are plant compounds that are like those 00:22:02.28\00:22:06.42 sex hormones and what they can do is... 00:22:06.45\00:22:09.94 They can bind to the testosterone receptor, 00:22:09.97\00:22:13.07 for example, for the estrogen receptor in the case of 00:22:13.10\00:22:15.68 breast tissue and they can actually LOWER the overall 00:22:15.71\00:22:20.39 sex hormone effect on that tissue... 00:22:20.42\00:22:23.50 And of course, the testosterone promotes growth. 00:22:23.53\00:22:26.67 Estrogen promotes growth. 00:22:26.70\00:22:28.39 And so if you can lower the net effect of those 00:22:28.42\00:22:31.54 sex hormones in the body, you're going to have 00:22:31.57\00:22:33.40 lower risk of promoting a cancer 00:22:33.43\00:22:36.86 in those hormone-sensitive tissues. 00:22:36.89\00:22:38.81 So moving away from a dairy product towards a soy product 00:22:38.84\00:22:41.78 would do that. Absolutely 00:22:41.81\00:22:43.18 Okay, our next thing on our list as we look at 00:22:43.21\00:22:45.16 foods that protect... 00:22:45.19\00:22:46.56 Use cashew or tofu-based sauces in place of cheese. 00:22:46.59\00:22:51.26 Oh - everyone is gasping! YOU'RE TAKING THE CHEESE 00:22:51.29\00:22:54.99 How does this work? 00:22:55.03\00:22:56.40 Well actually, it's very similar. 00:22:56.43\00:23:00.47 There have been studies showing that the high fat intake, 00:23:00.50\00:23:04.65 especially the high animal fat intake, 00:23:04.68\00:23:07.97 the saturated fat intake can actually increase 00:23:08.00\00:23:10.35 your risk of cancer. 00:23:10.38\00:23:11.75 And so cheese has more saturated fat than meat, actually. 00:23:11.78\00:23:16.20 In fact, it has more saturated fat 00:23:16.23\00:23:18.11 than another other food that's out there. 00:23:18.14\00:23:20.43 And it actually has more cholesterol than meat 00:23:20.46\00:23:23.81 as well by a little bit. 00:23:23.85\00:23:25.22 So cheese is something that you DON'T want to switch to 00:23:25.25\00:23:29.39 if you're trying to move away from meat. 00:23:29.42\00:23:31.26 You want to move PAST the cheese and on to the 00:23:31.29\00:23:34.69 nuts and seeds, olives, avocado, those are the good fats 00:23:34.72\00:23:38.98 and those are the kind of fats that are going to actually help 00:23:39.01\00:23:42.59 lower risk of cancer. 00:23:42.62\00:23:44.18 Next on our list, we have as we're moving down 00:23:44.21\00:23:46.75 foods to protect - Spend 15-30 minutes 00:23:46.78\00:23:48.99 in direct sunlight daily. 00:23:49.02\00:23:50.40 I guess this has to do with the vitamin D... Absolutely 00:23:50.43\00:23:53.09 Vitamin D is something that we've talked about it before, 00:23:53.12\00:23:56.60 but it's worth talking about again 00:23:56.63\00:23:58.50 because people really aren't getting the message. 00:23:58.53\00:24:01.30 We hear about it but we need to act on this. 00:24:01.33\00:24:04.55 We need to get out in the sunlight because 00:24:04.58\00:24:06.61 there are actual vitamin D receptors on the prostate tissue 00:24:06.64\00:24:12.52 And in fact, it has recently been discovered that 00:24:12.55\00:24:14.86 prostate cells are actually able to produce the active form 00:24:14.89\00:24:20.53 of vitamin D - right there in the prostate tissue. 00:24:20.56\00:24:23.93 We actually thought it was just the kidney, 00:24:23.96\00:24:25.77 but studies out of Boston University revealed that 00:24:25.80\00:24:29.40 the prostate cells are actually able to make this 00:24:29.43\00:24:32.00 active form in the vitamin D. 00:24:32.04\00:24:33.41 BUT, they must have the 25-hydroxy to do it, 00:24:33.44\00:24:36.77 and you only get that when you get that sunlight 00:24:36.80\00:24:40.53 on your skin producing that pre-vitamin D which can then go 00:24:40.57\00:24:44.75 to the prostate cancer cell. 00:24:44.79\00:24:46.16 So vitamin D supplements won't help then. 00:24:46.19\00:24:47.56 Well actually, vitamin D supplements WILL help. 00:24:47.59\00:24:50.17 In fact, we would recommend that you do both. 00:24:50.20\00:24:53.33 That you go out and get 15 minutes of sunlight 00:24:53.36\00:24:56.46 twice a day... As you're walking to buy 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.49 those supplements... That's exactly right! 00:24:58.52\00:25:01.00 Because you know, the reality is that we ARE an indoors culture, 00:25:01.03\00:25:04.13 and I don't know if that's going to change anytime soon. 00:25:04.16\00:25:06.39 So get out when you can, 15 minutes twice a day, 00:25:06.42\00:25:09.52 hopefully you can do that. 00:25:09.55\00:25:11.53 Also take a vitamin D supplement. 00:25:11.56\00:25:13.83 And currently it's recommended that we get at LEAST 00:25:13.86\00:25:17.48 1,000 IU a day. 00:25:17.51\00:25:20.26 Now I can tell you that that probably won't raise 00:25:20.29\00:25:23.06 your level if your level is low. 00:25:23.09\00:25:24.94 In fact, you may need to take... 00:25:24.97\00:25:26.84 In fact, what we do at the Lifestyle Center of America 00:25:26.87\00:25:28.78 is we put individuals on 50,000 IU once a week 00:25:28.81\00:25:33.43 for 4-6-8 weeks, get their level up to about 00:25:33.46\00:25:36.95 30-40-50 that's the safest level 00:25:36.98\00:25:41.23 and will give you the lowest risk of prostate cancer 00:25:41.26\00:25:43.82 in these epidemiologic studies. 00:25:43.85\00:25:45.77 So, it can get too high; someone has said 00:25:45.80\00:25:48.02 over 150 is too high. That's correct 00:25:48.05\00:25:50.46 So if you're taking any kind of supplement that's not a 00:25:50.49\00:25:53.89 water soluble type thing, you know, you don't get rid 00:25:53.92\00:25:57.61 of it by urinating, you need to make sure and get that level 00:25:57.64\00:26:00.98 checked now and then, right? That's correct 00:26:01.01\00:26:02.38 And, you know, actually to be very honest with you, 00:26:02.41\00:26:05.18 it's going to be very difficult for the average person 00:26:05.21\00:26:08.32 to get a D level that's toxic because researchers have 00:26:08.35\00:26:12.19 actually shown that you need about 10,000 IU a day 00:26:12.22\00:26:16.47 to get to a toxic level. 00:26:16.50\00:26:18.49 Two questions I want to ask you. 00:26:18.52\00:26:20.08 One is - what do these things, these recommendations 00:26:20.11\00:26:23.14 do to help a woman's risk again cancer... 00:26:23.17\00:26:25.63 And then, lastly, what kind of screening should we be doing 00:26:25.66\00:26:28.69 and we have about 1-1/2 minutes. 00:26:28.72\00:26:30.41 Well if we talk about vitamin D, for example, 00:26:30.44\00:26:33.36 remember that our vitamin D levels are the highest 00:26:33.39\00:26:38.49 vitamin D levels are not only helpful for men, 00:26:38.52\00:26:41.84 protecting them from prostate cancer and colon cancer, 00:26:41.87\00:26:44.15 but women with the highest vitamin D levels also 00:26:44.18\00:26:47.72 have the lowest risk of ovary cancer and breast cancer, 00:26:47.75\00:26:51.56 so that's important. 00:26:51.59\00:26:52.96 Lycopene is important not only for the protection 00:26:52.99\00:26:56.63 of the prostate DNA against damage from the free radicals 00:26:56.66\00:27:00.47 but it will also protect breast cell DNA, 00:27:00.50\00:27:04.21 and ovarian cell DNA against the 00:27:04.24\00:27:06.77 damaging effects of free radicals. 00:27:06.80\00:27:08.86 So this is a program for women as well as men. Absolutely! 00:27:08.89\00:27:12.22 Now, I want to put up that last graphic about 00:27:12.25\00:27:14.82 a test that we need to have. 00:27:14.85\00:27:16.23 What is this test we need and when do we need to have it? 00:27:16.26\00:27:18.42 It's a prostate specific antigen test. 00:27:18.45\00:27:21.52 It should be done at age 50 in a man, 00:27:21.55\00:27:24.30 and if you've had a family history 00:27:24.33\00:27:26.86 of prostate cancer, then at age 40. 00:27:26.89\00:27:28.38 It should be done with a digital rectal exam where 00:27:28.42\00:27:32.40 a urologist or other physician puts their finger 00:27:32.43\00:27:34.77 on your prostate to make sure there are not any hard nodules 00:27:34.80\00:27:37.30 or something that would indicate a cancer. 00:27:37.33\00:27:39.65 Even after 40 is okay, right? Absolutely 00:27:39.68\00:27:41.23 We've been talking to Dr. Tim Arnott 00:27:41.88\00:27:44.00 He's a physician at the Lifestyle Center of America 00:27:44.03\00:27:46.71 in Oklahoma 00:27:46.74\00:27:48.13 And we hope that today's program will help you 00:27:48.16\00:27:50.72 avoid prostate cancer and that you'll have 00:27:50.75\00:27:52.88 health that lasts as a result for a lifetime and beyond! 00:27:52.91\00:27:56.73 Thanks for joining us! 00:27:56.76\00:27:58.83
