Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:47.19\00:00:49.16 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:49.19\00:00:50.94 and we're glad you've joined us today. 00:00:50.97\00:00:52.61 We're going to be talking about something that is 00:00:52.64\00:00:54.44 affecting millions of Americans and many people around the world 00:00:54.47\00:00:58.41 and that is type 2 diabetes. 00:00:58.44\00:01:00.90 Joining us to talk about this subject is Dr. George Guthrie 00:01:00.93\00:01:04.55 He is a physician at the "Lifestyle Center of America" 00:01:04.58\00:01:07.52 in Oklahoma, that deals with these types of things; 00:01:07.55\00:01:11.16 with lifestyle diseases. 00:01:11.19\00:01:12.70 He also is one of the founding physicians in a program called, 00:01:12.73\00:01:17.10 "Wellspring" that deals with the same thing. 00:01:17.13\00:01:19.30 He has practiced medicine for about 14 years 00:01:19.33\00:01:22.28 in a family practice setting. 00:01:22.31\00:01:23.70 He has also taught in the university, 00:01:23.73\00:01:26.63 at the university level, subjects like nutrition 00:01:26.66\00:01:29.28 as it relates to health, and were glad you're 00:01:29.31\00:01:31.46 with us Dr. Guthrie! Glad to be here, Don 00:01:31.49\00:01:33.47 I'm excited about the different things we're hearing 00:01:33.51\00:01:35.97 about the hope and help that can come to the 00:01:36.00\00:01:38.86 millions of Americans that have diabetes type 2. 00:01:38.89\00:01:41.87 That's right! It's encouraging! 00:01:41.90\00:01:43.42 And I guess you do this day-in-day-out, 00:01:43.45\00:01:45.57 you really help people all the time. 00:01:45.60\00:01:46.97 Yes, it's exciting to see people 00:01:47.00\00:01:49.71 actually changing their disease process. 00:01:49.74\00:01:52.48 Now we talked a little bit about diabetes on other programs 00:01:52.51\00:01:56.60 here on "Health for a Lifetime," 00:01:56.63\00:01:58.19 one type of diabetes is type 1 which is an autoimmune situation 00:01:58.22\00:02:03.85 that really you can't do anything about 00:02:03.88\00:02:06.05 except to treat with medication or there are some new approaches 00:02:06.08\00:02:09.40 that they are still implementing with 00:02:09.43\00:02:11.48 transplant of cells and whatnot. 00:02:11.51\00:02:13.80 But this is type 2 diabetes... 00:02:13.83\00:02:15.75 What is type 2 diabetes, what causes it, 00:02:15.78\00:02:18.11 what can we do about it? 00:02:18.14\00:02:19.51 In order to understand type 2 diabetes, 00:02:19.54\00:02:21.64 we need to understand how the 00:02:21.67\00:02:23.04 Creator designed us in the first place. 00:02:23.07\00:02:24.44 So let's review a little bit and then kind of 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.53 explain how it comes. 00:02:26.56\00:02:27.93 We take food in our mouth, it goes down into our stomach, 00:02:27.96\00:02:32.59 that little sac which kind of mixes up the digestive enzymes 00:02:32.62\00:02:36.24 and gets things started. 00:02:36.27\00:02:37.70 It then goes into the small intestine, 00:02:37.73\00:02:39.77 and is absorbed into the bloodstream. 00:02:39.80\00:02:41.73 The bloodstream takes the food, 00:02:41.76\00:02:44.97 the energy that's coming into the body 00:02:45.00\00:02:47.04 in a variety of different places. 00:02:47.07\00:02:48.58 one of the places it goes is the pancreas, 00:02:48.61\00:02:51.37 and there in the pancreas are cells; 00:02:51.40\00:02:54.61 they are called "beta cells" 00:02:54.64\00:02:56.42 Their job is to make a hormone which I like to call the 00:02:56.45\00:03:00.41 "Paul Revere hormone" 00:03:00.44\00:03:01.81 Remember what Paul Revere said? 00:03:01.84\00:03:03.25 Ahh... "The British are coming" Right! 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.32 Well insulin says, "The energy is coming" 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.80 to let the body know. 00:03:08.83\00:03:10.80 That messenger goes out throughout the whole body 00:03:10.83\00:03:14.26 and the cells of the body then 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.86 HEAR THAT... "The energy is coming" and open up 00:03:15.89\00:03:19.69 to RECEIVE the energy that is coming. 00:03:19.72\00:03:22.72 So that's the way the system works normally. 00:03:22.75\00:03:25.43 And then what happens when you've got a problem? 00:03:25.46\00:03:27.53 Paul Revere falls off his horse? What happens? 00:03:27.56\00:03:29.67 No, no - it's not Paul Revere falling off his horse this time. 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.50 In essence, it has to do with the listening ability. 00:03:32.53\00:03:34.99 You see, each cell in our body responds to that insulin 00:03:35.02\00:03:39.61 according to its own need. 00:03:39.64\00:03:41.13 You can imagine if I were running a race... 00:03:41.16\00:03:43.07 the thigh muscles, because I'm running, need a lot of energy, 00:03:43.10\00:03:46.68 and when the energy comes in, 00:03:46.71\00:03:48.69 the Paul Revere hormone says, "The energy is coming" 00:03:48.72\00:03:51.25 the cells of the thigh muscles say, 00:03:51.28\00:03:53.19 "I want it, give it to me" 00:03:53.22\00:03:54.83 On the other hand, your eye blinkers, 00:03:54.86\00:03:57.55 the ones that are kind of cleaning the windshield, 00:03:57.58\00:03:59.53 don't need all that much energy... 00:03:59.56\00:04:01.09 So if I'm running that race and all that energy comes in, 00:04:01.12\00:04:03.47 the Paul Revere hormone says "The energy is coming" 00:04:03.50\00:04:05.55 the eye blinkers say, "Hey, I'll take a little bit of it" 00:04:05.58\00:04:08.19 So there's an individual variation really among 00:04:08.22\00:04:10.91 ALL the cells of the body. 00:04:10.94\00:04:12.73 A relative insulin sensitivity 00:04:12.76\00:04:14.97 versus a relative insulin resistance. 00:04:15.00\00:04:18.62 Now, you asked about type 2 diabetes... Right 00:04:18.65\00:04:21.39 Here's what happens... 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.84 If there's too much energy in ALL the time, 00:04:23.87\00:04:27.92 coming, coming, coming, and no energy out - no EXERCISE 00:04:27.95\00:04:32.27 the cells get FULL - they don't need it individually, 00:04:32.30\00:04:37.82 like the eye blinkers which say, 00:04:37.85\00:04:39.37 "Maybe I'll take a little bit of it," 00:04:39.40\00:04:40.91 the rest of the cells begin to say the same thing. 00:04:40.94\00:04:43.07 When the thigh muscles or most of the cells in the body 00:04:43.10\00:04:46.33 are saying, "No thank you," 00:04:46.36\00:04:48.99 then we begin to see the changes that lead to 00:04:49.02\00:04:53.44 type 2 diabetes. 00:04:53.47\00:04:54.89 Okay, so this then - they resist because there's SO much 00:04:54.92\00:04:58.04 insulin out there they just don't need it. 00:04:58.07\00:04:59.95 Exactly! And then what happens? 00:04:59.98\00:05:02.28 What happens... the body knows that TOO much sugar, 00:05:02.31\00:05:08.83 too much energy in the bloodstream will tend to cause 00:05:08.86\00:05:13.04 problems! 00:05:13.07\00:05:14.98 Now, I think we've mentioned these before... 00:05:15.01\00:05:17.74 There can be problems... The graphic that we looked at, 00:05:17.77\00:05:21.55 I think we have one that we can look at. 00:05:21.58\00:05:23.45 Small blood vessel diseases are CAUSED BY blood sugars that are 00:05:23.48\00:05:27.54 UP too much - too LONG... 00:05:27.57\00:05:29.75 And so the body tries to keep that from happening. 00:05:29.78\00:05:34.58 If there is a, for example, the blood vessels in the eyes 00:05:34.61\00:05:39.16 are kind of plugged up by too much blood sugar, 00:05:39.19\00:05:40.98 it leads to blindness, 00:05:41.01\00:05:42.38 same thing can happen in the kidneys, 00:05:42.41\00:05:44.11 or in the nerves to lead to neuropathy... 00:05:44.14\00:05:47.91 The body KNOWING that says, 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.65 "We've got to get this energy OUT of the bloodstream," 00:05:49.68\00:05:53.17 and so it starts to yell LOUDER. 00:05:53.20\00:05:56.42 Okay, so the real problems then and we talked about those, 00:05:56.45\00:06:00.69 with the sugar going up is that it really causes damage 00:06:00.72\00:06:03.88 in these small vessels and they say, 00:06:03.91\00:06:05.47 "Hey, get it OUT of the bloodstream 00:06:05.50\00:06:07.97 because we don't want the person going blind, 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.62 and we don't want that happening. " 00:06:09.65\00:06:11.02 So where does it go? 00:06:11.05\00:06:12.42 So what happens is the pancreas just yells LOUDER. 00:06:12.45\00:06:15.19 The Paul Revere hormone keeps coming out... 00:06:15.22\00:06:17.46 "THE ENERGY IS COMING... THE ENERGY IS COMING" 00:06:17.49\00:06:19.21 And that higher and higher... 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.04 Well the increasing levels of insulin 00:06:21.07\00:06:24.78 kind of force the cells to take it. 00:06:24.81\00:06:28.05 But they are developing something called an 00:06:28.08\00:06:31.76 insulin resistance... 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.84 And when MOST of the cells in the body have 00:06:34.87\00:06:36.84 this thing called "insulin resistance," 00:06:36.87\00:06:39.16 then we say that the whole body has insulin resistance. 00:06:39.19\00:06:43.54 I think we have a graphic that shows a little bit of 00:06:43.57\00:06:45.45 the physiology... we want to look at that. 00:06:45.48\00:06:48.72 I assume is the stomach and it's going down in there 00:06:48.75\00:06:51.33 and getting churned up and then supposedly going 00:06:51.36\00:06:53.94 down into the intestine... What's happening here? 00:06:53.97\00:06:55.67 Well it's absorbed into the blood vessels. 00:06:55.70\00:06:57.35 Some of the blood vessels go to the pancreas 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.58 which then respond. 00:06:59.61\00:07:01.02 Isn't that that little finger- like thing off the stomach? 00:07:01.05\00:07:03.34 Yeah, it kind of sticks behind the stomach. 00:07:03.37\00:07:05.16 You can see part of it over there to the left, 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.90 and then the little finger that sticks out. 00:07:06.93\00:07:08.84 And then the insulin goes out and really sends the message 00:07:08.87\00:07:12.25 to ALL the cells in the body. 00:07:12.28\00:07:14.59 Okay and then when that's messed up, 00:07:14.62\00:07:17.52 just like you described, we get insulin resistance. 00:07:17.55\00:07:19.68 The cells don't want it. 00:07:19.71\00:07:21.08 They're saying, "Absolutely not" 00:07:21.11\00:07:22.55 We see the insulin levels going UP. 00:07:22.58\00:07:25.55 As the insulin levels go up, 00:07:25.58\00:07:27.78 it begins to cause problems in the body. 00:07:27.81\00:07:31.08 What are the problems it causes, 00:07:31.11\00:07:32.48 and what should we do to treat them? 00:07:32.51\00:07:33.88 Okay, the first one I'd like to put up on the list is actually 00:07:33.91\00:07:40.50 OBESITY 00:07:40.53\00:07:42.32 And that's because insulin is a growth hormone. 00:07:42.35\00:07:47.59 When your insulin levels go up, 00:07:47.62\00:07:49.24 it tends to make you store energy. 00:07:49.27\00:07:51.79 So not only do you tend to store fat energy, 00:07:51.82\00:07:56.16 but you also tend to build up, 00:07:56.19\00:07:58.97 increase proteins in the body as well. 00:07:59.00\00:08:04.19 One of the common things that happens to me in the office 00:08:04.22\00:08:06.29 is that a young man will come in... 00:08:06.32\00:08:07.79 I say "young" now, so let's say 45 years of age... 00:08:07.82\00:08:10.68 That's young! Very young! Thank you! 00:08:10.71\00:08:13.37 He says, "You know doc, I'm having a hard time 00:08:13.40\00:08:16.97 getting the weight off. " 00:08:17.00\00:08:18.37 "I've put on 30-40 pounds; 00:08:18.40\00:08:20.62 when I was young, I was a jock; 00:08:20.65\00:08:22.94 football, track, field - whatever it may be" 00:08:22.98\00:08:25.16 "I'd gain a little weight, I'd just exercise 00:08:25.20\00:08:27.35 and it would come off. " 00:08:27.38\00:08:28.75 "I graduated from college and got a desk job, 00:08:28.78\00:08:31.11 and I still try to do the exercise, 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.11 but you know, my weight would go up a little bit, 00:08:33.14\00:08:36.71 I'd exercise and it would go back down. " 00:08:36.74\00:08:38.67 "Well, recently it's not working .. my weight is still going up" 00:08:38.70\00:08:43.36 So this clicks in your mind... Well, he's not processing 00:08:43.39\00:08:46.81 the insulin and all that stuff correctly. 00:08:46.84\00:08:48.47 He is developing insulin resistance; 00:08:48.50\00:08:50.89 his insulin levels are going up, 00:08:50.92\00:08:53.54 and that's making it hard for him to lose weight. 00:08:53.57\00:08:56.14 So if someone that has that happening today 00:08:56.17\00:08:57.54 that's listening, they may need to check out whether or not 00:08:57.57\00:08:59.83 they have... If it's hard to lose weight, 00:08:59.86\00:09:01.60 it's LIKELY that your insulin levels are starting to go up. 00:09:01.63\00:09:05.13 If the insulin levels are going up, 00:09:05.16\00:09:06.89 you're on the road to developing that diabetes. 00:09:06.92\00:09:10.12 Is this something that you should go immediately 00:09:10.15\00:09:12.58 see a physician about or is it something 00:09:12.61\00:09:14.56 that could wait a couple of years? 00:09:14.59\00:09:17.60 Let's wait until we talk about the treatment! Okay? 00:09:17.63\00:09:20.19 What's another thing that happens then? 00:09:20.22\00:09:21.81 High insulin levels are also strongly associated with 00:09:21.84\00:09:24.74 elevated blood pressure! 00:09:24.77\00:09:26.14 I've seen reports in the literature; 00:09:26.17\00:09:28.88 taking people of hypertension, 90% of them, 00:09:28.91\00:09:32.19 have elevated insulin levels. 00:09:32.22\00:09:34.36 Now insulin... we're not 100% sure of the cause and 00:09:34.39\00:09:36.95 relationship here, but we know that insulin 00:09:36.98\00:09:39.05 tends to make the kidneys hang on to sodium... 00:09:39.08\00:09:42.11 And sodium pulls water in and if there's more water 00:09:42.14\00:09:44.45 in the pipes, the pressure tends to go up! 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.61 Also... 00:09:46.64\00:09:48.01 So high blood pressure is related to diabetes... 00:09:48.04\00:09:49.41 I mean, I haven't heard this too often, 00:09:49.44\00:09:51.05 and you're saying that happens as a result of... 00:09:51.08\00:09:53.57 The elevated insulin levels! Okay, all right. 00:09:53.60\00:09:55.70 You see, the body is getting insulin resistance... 00:09:55.73\00:09:57.68 The insulin resistance, the body is overcoming that by 00:09:57.71\00:10:00.05 increasing the insulin. Okay 00:10:00.08\00:10:02.38 As the insulin goes up, it tends to hold on 00:10:02.41\00:10:04.42 to the sodium AND the insulin resistance itself 00:10:04.45\00:10:07.37 makes the blood vessels so they're less stretchy. 00:10:07.40\00:10:10.09 That is, they tend to be a little narrower. 00:10:10.12\00:10:12.54 Smaller pipes and more water in the pipes 00:10:12.57\00:10:15.27 tend to make the pressure go up. 00:10:15.30\00:10:17.50 Something ELSE elevated insulin levels do... 00:10:17.53\00:10:20.99 is to actually RAISE cholesterol. 00:10:21.02\00:10:26.13 High insulin levels make the cholesterol go up 00:10:26.16\00:10:28.88 That includes the BAD cholesterol... the LDLs 00:10:28.91\00:10:33.96 At the SAME time, it tends to 00:10:33.99\00:10:35.52 make the GOOD cholesterol, the HDLs, go DOWN. 00:10:35.55\00:10:38.72 How does that work? Why does that happen? 00:10:38.75\00:10:40.39 You know, I'm not sure of the mechanism on that, 00:10:40.42\00:10:42.58 but it's pretty direct, it connects... So they always this 00:10:42.61\00:10:45.45 when the insulin goes up, cholesterol goes up, 00:10:45.80\00:10:47.60 HDL goes down. 00:10:47.63\00:10:49.00 That's right... the insulin, as it raises, has this effect, 00:10:49.03\00:10:53.47 and put those effects together, and you have a set up 00:10:53.50\00:10:57.68 for something called "heart attacks," right? 00:10:57.71\00:11:00.34 So we're kind of building a case here on the way to 00:11:00.37\00:11:04.25 type 2 diabetes... actually a series of diseases 00:11:04.28\00:11:08.63 that are coming secondary to the insulin levels going up. 00:11:08.66\00:11:13.03 We have increase in weight. 00:11:13.06\00:11:15.58 We have increase in blood pressure. 00:11:15.61\00:11:17.21 We have the increase in cholesterol, 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.64 and heart attack risk. 00:11:18.67\00:11:21.65 So 3 or 4 of them... Someone I was talking to once 00:11:21.68\00:11:25.67 called these 4, "The deadly quartet" 00:11:25.70\00:11:27.31 That's one of the for it, yes. 00:11:27.34\00:11:29.19 Sometimes it's called, "The insulin resistant syndrome" 00:11:29.22\00:11:32.17 Because its insulin resistance is actually causing these things 00:11:32.20\00:11:35.05 So if anybody has a duet or a solo or a trio happening, 00:11:35.08\00:11:38.77 it's TIME TO GET TO THE DOCTOR! RIGHT? 00:11:38.80\00:11:40.44 Well, it's time to do something about it FOR SURE! 00:11:40.47\00:11:43.77 Are we ready to talk about what we can do about it? 00:11:43.80\00:11:45.90 Okay, we can do that, it's really NOT that difficult. 00:11:45.93\00:11:50.39 If you understand that the CAUSE of the disease 00:11:50.42\00:11:54.90 is actually from too much energy in, 00:11:54.93\00:11:57.70 and NOT enough energy OUT... exercise, 00:11:57.73\00:12:01.01 then the best way to deal with it is to 00:12:01.04\00:12:03.39 turn that process around. 00:12:03.42\00:12:05.68 So EXERCISE is one thing we can do. 00:12:05.71\00:12:07.82 Exercise and decrease the number of calories coming in. 00:12:07.85\00:12:11.23 What kind of exercise is the best? 00:12:11.26\00:12:12.97 Anything that uses the muscles! 00:12:13.00\00:12:18.81 Well that pretty much opens it up! 00:12:18.84\00:12:20.46 Well what kinds of things do they do at the Lifestyle Center? 00:12:20.49\00:12:22.84 What kind of things do they recommend 00:12:23.79\00:12:25.16 in the Wellspring Program? 00:12:25.19\00:12:26.56 Well, there are a lot of different kinds of exercise 00:12:26.59\00:12:29.55 and they can be talked about in a lot of different ways. 00:12:29.58\00:12:31.47 You need to MOVE for #1 00:12:31.50\00:12:33.55 The antithesis of health is the couch potato... 00:12:33.58\00:12:38.08 who is sitting there doing nothing! 00:12:38.11\00:12:40.33 You know, you get credit for the exercise you do 00:12:40.36\00:12:43.20 when you just get up and walk, right - a little bit. 00:12:43.23\00:12:47.81 Parking at the far end of the parking lot 00:12:47.84\00:12:49.75 so you can walk forward. 00:12:49.78\00:12:51.15 But, you know, you ask about specific forms of exercise 00:12:51.18\00:12:54.32 that might be beneficial and again I want to emphasize 00:12:54.35\00:12:56.94 ANY exercise is better than none. 00:12:56.97\00:12:58.81 At the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:12:58.84\00:13:00.52 we believe that something called "intermittent training" 00:13:00.55\00:13:04.00 ...usually used in high Olympic-class athletes 00:13:04.03\00:13:08.74 modified for people with these diseases... 00:13:08.77\00:13:12.14 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, heart disease 00:13:12.17\00:13:16.56 is actually a better way of exercising. 00:13:16.59\00:13:19.50 So intermittent - does that mean you stop and start? 00:13:19.53\00:13:22.74 Yes, our little rule is - every minute that you exercise 00:13:22.77\00:13:27.47 needs some rest within that minute. 00:13:27.50\00:13:29.80 So, for example, in my exercise program, 00:13:29.83\00:13:31.79 now that I've learned how to do it, 00:13:31.82\00:13:33.29 I'll exercise hard for about 45 seconds, 00:13:33.32\00:13:36.57 and then rest for 30 seconds, 00:13:36.60\00:13:39.02 and then 45 seconds really hard, 00:13:39.05\00:13:40.69 and then rest or slow WAY down for 30 seconds. 00:13:40.72\00:13:44.23 So it's okay for when I'm out there running, 00:13:44.26\00:13:45.97 and I see all these cars coming by and I say, 00:13:46.00\00:13:47.54 "Man, I wish I could slow down" 00:13:47.57\00:13:48.94 I should just do it instead of just saying... 00:13:48.97\00:13:50.94 "Just keep going because they're all coming, 00:13:50.97\00:13:52.88 and they're going to think you're a wimp" 00:13:52.91\00:13:54.28 "You just keep going" 00:13:54.31\00:13:55.68 You've kind of gotten me moving 00:13:55.71\00:13:57.08 over towards the exercise side of things, 00:13:57.11\00:13:59.61 but let me focus on the intermittent training. 00:13:59.64\00:14:03.12 We really think it works well because it keeps 00:14:03.15\00:14:06.21 lactic acid out of the blood. 00:14:06.24\00:14:07.61 Lactic acid is a toxic sort of a substance 00:14:07.64\00:14:10.28 that tends to make the cells sick. 00:14:10.31\00:14:12.32 Well you know, if you push it too hard your muscles are sore. 00:14:12.35\00:14:15.15 Lactic acid tends to decrease your pleasure from your exercise 00:14:15.18\00:14:19.26 and especially for people who are sick... 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.56 Makes them... they don't feel as well. 00:14:21.59\00:14:23.39 If we keep the lactic acid out, 00:14:23.42\00:14:24.79 they can actually improve faster. 00:14:24.82\00:14:26.79 So that's an important part of our treatment program, 00:14:26.82\00:14:30.29 and certainly taught and recommended at 00:14:30.32\00:14:32.61 Lifestyle Center of America, 00:14:32.64\00:14:34.01 as well as the Wellspring Program 00:14:34.04\00:14:35.70 available for people in their homes. 00:14:35.73\00:14:37.65 We've been talking with Dr. George Guthrie 00:14:37.68\00:14:39.62 We're talking about type 2 diabetes. 00:14:39.65\00:14:41.90 We're going to be getting some more practical suggestions 00:14:41.93\00:14:44.78 on how to stop, reverse or probably better yet 00:14:44.81\00:14:47.59 even than that... A LOT of insulin goes up. 00:17:23.22\00:17:25.85 We've talked about already as we've talked about the cause 00:17:25.88\00:17:28.53 that when the insulin is high, 00:17:28.56\00:17:30.34 it tends to make the weight go up. 00:17:30.37\00:17:31.74 It tends to make the blood pressure go up, 00:17:31.77\00:17:33.38 and the cholesterol and all that stuff. 00:17:33.41\00:17:35.27 So if we can take food that doesn't stimulate 00:17:35.30\00:17:39.20 as much insulin production, 00:17:39.23\00:17:41.22 we'll actually be helping the process. 00:17:41.25\00:17:43.22 Does that make sense? Now that makes sense! 00:17:43.25\00:17:45.75 So speaking of food then, 00:17:45.78\00:17:48.59 does that mean we should just eat LESS food? 00:17:48.62\00:17:51.16 Well that would be one way to do it. 00:17:51.19\00:17:52.88 But, if one chooses food that is lower in calories, 00:17:52.91\00:17:56.74 and larger in volume, one doesn't have to decrease 00:17:56.77\00:18:00.61 the amount of food. 00:18:00.64\00:18:02.01 They can even eat MORE food! 00:18:02.04\00:18:03.41 That's happened! RIGHT! 00:18:14.58\00:18:17.72 Well the best place is actually in the produce section. 00:18:17.75\00:18:20.71 The way God designed food, it didn't have the calorically 00:18:20.74\00:18:24.81 dense nature - it has mixed with it a lot of fiber and water, 00:18:24.84\00:18:29.93 and other important things. 00:18:29.96\00:18:32.38 So generally, the rule that we use at 00:18:32.41\00:18:35.58 Lifestyle Center of America 00:18:35.61\00:18:36.98 is move toward a plant-based diet. 00:18:37.01\00:18:39.48 The closer you get it to the way God made it, the better. 00:18:39.51\00:18:42.79 So MANGOS and mashed potatoes instead of M&Ms 00:18:42.82\00:18:46.83 Well certainly mangos would be better than M&Ms 00:18:46.86\00:18:52.04 All right, so just more fiber. 00:18:52.07\00:18:56.28 Anything else about food we need to know as we're 00:18:56.31\00:18:58.26 trying to reverse type 2 diabetes? 00:18:58.29\00:19:00.66 Well, when we talk about the fiber, 00:19:00.69\00:19:02.95 one of the encouraging things about fiber is that it works 00:19:02.98\00:19:06.33 in other ways that are beneficial to the 00:19:06.36\00:19:09.93 insulin resistance - to that stimulus to the insulin. 00:19:09.96\00:19:13.72 What the fiber tends to do is to hang on to the energy, 00:19:13.75\00:19:17.01 and let it go into the body more slowly. 00:19:17.04\00:19:19.73 If it goes in more slowly, the pancreas doesn't have to 00:19:19.76\00:19:22.51 respond so emotionally... so VIGOROUSLY, okay 00:19:22.54\00:19:26.86 It can... okay, we can handle this, 00:19:26.89\00:19:29.11 and there will be less insulin. 00:19:29.14\00:19:30.51 If there is less insulin, then there's less stimulus 00:19:30.54\00:19:33.26 for the weight gain, etcetera. 00:19:33.29\00:19:35.46 Okay, exercise, first of all we talked about, 00:19:35.49\00:19:39.80 and now we talked about how to deal with the weight problem 00:19:39.83\00:19:43.33 in terms of what we eat. 00:19:43.36\00:19:46.19 There were other things that we saw on our graphic that 00:19:46.22\00:19:49.67 CAUSED or came as a result of type 2 diabetes, 00:19:49.70\00:19:53.46 and the next one on our list, 00:19:53.49\00:19:55.64 I'm trying to recall what that was... 00:19:55.67\00:19:57.04 We had - what was the next thing? 00:19:57.07\00:19:59.06 We had obesity, hypertension and the heart disease. 00:19:59.09\00:20:02.79 So heart disease, let's talk about that then, 00:20:02.82\00:20:05.29 or hypertension. 00:20:05.32\00:20:06.85 Now you mean how to get the hypertension down? Right 00:20:06.88\00:20:12.22 Well, since the insulin tends to stimulate or the holding on 00:20:12.25\00:20:18.37 of the sodium and tends to make the blood pressure go up, 00:20:18.40\00:20:20.77 if we can lower the insulin levels, 00:20:20.80\00:20:24.23 why the blood pressure will tend to come down as well. 00:20:24.26\00:20:27.08 So it's just kind of a natural thing, 00:20:27.11\00:20:28.98 and if we're moving and if we're eating the right things. 00:20:29.01\00:20:30.84 What other things do we do then or do you do there 00:20:30.87\00:20:33.45 at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:20:33.48\00:20:34.92 or in the Wellspring Program to REVERSE type 2 diabetes? 00:20:34.95\00:20:39.28 Well, it's really simple. 00:20:39.31\00:20:41.14 It's the exercise and the diet. 00:20:41.17\00:20:43.46 One of the things we focus on is something called 00:20:43.49\00:20:46.10 the "glycemic index. " Have you heard of this? 00:20:46.13\00:20:48.23 I have NOT really heard about this - no. 00:20:48.26\00:20:51.24 It's a rather interesting concept. 00:20:51.27\00:20:52.87 Scientifically, we can actually measure how fast 00:20:52.90\00:20:56.99 the energy comes into the body. 00:20:57.02\00:20:59.07 Measure the speed of the 00:20:59.10\00:21:00.47 freight train - if you want to put it that way. 00:21:00.50\00:21:02.80 So when you eat a food, how fast does it actually 00:21:02.83\00:21:05.50 enter the bloodstream? 00:21:05.53\00:21:07.08 The measurement we use is called the "glycemic index" 00:21:07.11\00:21:12.35 In essence, it's a percentage. 00:21:12.38\00:21:14.14 You take 100 grams of sugar or 100 grams of white bread 00:21:14.17\00:21:19.31 and you measure somebody's blood sugar when they eat that, 00:21:19.34\00:21:22.44 and it goes UP and it comes down. 00:21:22.47\00:21:24.03 You measure that under the curve ... you call that 100% 00:21:24.06\00:21:26.89 Then you give somebody 100 grams of broccoli. 00:21:26.92\00:21:30.74 And the blood sugar goes up just a little bit. 00:21:30.77\00:21:32.98 And you measure the area under the curve, 00:21:33.01\00:21:35.02 and then you say, "Well that's a percentage of the 100% 00:21:35.05\00:21:39.26 of either the white bread or sugar. 00:21:39.29\00:21:42.34 And that then creates something called the "glycemic index" 00:21:42.37\00:21:46.14 So you carry a glycemic index with you 00:21:46.17\00:21:48.57 and say, "Okay, that's going to 00:21:48.60\00:21:49.97 make it go up - I don't want that" 00:21:50.00\00:21:51.37 Well it certainly helps to answer questions when people 00:21:51.40\00:21:53.63 look at foods and there are lists of foods 00:21:53.66\00:21:56.15 to help people with that... 00:21:56.18\00:21:57.55 BUT - truth is, the closer you get it to the way God made it, 00:21:57.58\00:22:01.01 the better off you are. 00:22:01.04\00:22:03.01 For example, if you look at the glycemic index of, 00:22:03.04\00:22:07.05 we mentioned it already... white bread, 00:22:07.08\00:22:08.76 it's wheat that has been highly refined. 00:22:08.79\00:22:11.74 It goes into the body really fast. 00:22:11.77\00:22:14.14 If you look at the whole wheat, it goes in quite a bit slower. 00:22:14.17\00:22:19.36 If you take the fiber out, it goes in faster still. 00:22:19.39\00:22:22.81 If you grind it up into powder, like the flour, 00:22:22.84\00:22:26.65 it goes in very fast. 00:22:26.68\00:22:28.05 If you eat it as wheat berries, it goes in even slower. 00:22:28.08\00:22:30.76 So the same thing would be true with white rice 00:22:30.79\00:22:32.81 versus brown rice? Exactly! 00:22:32.84\00:22:35.21 Okay so the glycemic index then, 00:22:35.24\00:22:37.52 this could be something that would be handy, 00:22:37.55\00:22:39.27 but basically, if you don't want to carry anything 00:22:39.30\00:22:41.17 with you, just eat foods in their natural state, 00:22:41.20\00:22:43.34 and you're going to be okay. 00:22:43.37\00:22:44.74 Foods as grown is a good principle. 00:22:44.77\00:22:46.74 The closer that you get it to the way God made it, 00:22:46.77\00:22:49.62 the better off you are. 00:22:49.66\00:22:51.32 Honey... What about honey? 00:22:51.35\00:22:52.98 Well, honey has a lot of sugar in it. 00:22:53.02\00:22:55.66 It's a processed food from the bee, huh? 00:22:55.69\00:22:57.91 A processed food from the bee - that's correct. 00:22:57.94\00:23:00.23 And this brings out a good point, Don 00:23:00.26\00:23:02.67 It's not that you can't eat the foods that are higher 00:23:02.70\00:23:05.49 in glycemic, but your meal should be composed 00:23:05.52\00:23:08.62 largely of foods that are LOW on the glycemic index. 00:23:08.65\00:23:14.19 So, for example, you could have a little honey with some sort of 00:23:14.22\00:23:19.93 a whole grain as a sweetener, 00:23:19.96\00:23:22.11 because the fiber helps to modulate that. 00:23:22.14\00:23:25.15 We eat whole meals, we don't usually eat plain foods 00:23:25.18\00:23:28.19 As-a-matter-of-fact, there has been some argument 00:23:28.22\00:23:29.95 among those who work directly with patients 00:23:29.98\00:23:33.59 about how USEFUL this whole glycemic index is... 00:23:33.62\00:23:37.76 because who wants to go around with a list. 00:23:37.79\00:23:40.74 So, in essence, it is a TOOL to help people 00:23:40.77\00:23:43.51 begin to THINK about foods that are safer and better. 00:23:43.54\00:23:47.43 Okay, you know, in speaking about treating type 2 diabetes, 00:23:47.46\00:23:52.31 at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:23:52.34\00:23:55.59 and also in the Wellspring Program, 00:23:55.62\00:23:56.99 have you seen SUCCESS? 00:23:57.02\00:23:58.39 Can people reverse this disease? 00:23:58.42\00:24:00.67 Do they get off insulin? What kinds of things happen? 00:24:00.70\00:24:03.72 Oh Don, I'm afraid of that "reversing" word, okay 00:24:03.75\00:24:07.71 When you talk about reversing a disease, 00:24:07.74\00:24:10.18 that's a little scary to say. 00:24:10.21\00:24:12.01 For example, if somebody has blindness from the diabetes, 00:24:12.04\00:24:15.67 I don't know that I can reverse that... Right 00:24:15.70\00:24:17.89 The amputations, kidney failure, 00:24:17.92\00:24:22.65 I don't know that we can reverse that. 00:24:22.68\00:24:24.22 But what I have seen happen is I've seen blood sugars come down 00:24:24.25\00:24:27.57 I've seen insulin levels come down. 00:24:27.60\00:24:29.42 Blood pressures come down, weights come down. 00:24:29.45\00:24:31.56 In essence, this whole problem associated with 00:24:31.59\00:24:35.68 high insulin levels is... I'm afraid to say that word 00:24:35.71\00:24:40.03 "reversed" It's backed up! 00:24:40.06\00:24:42.37 It's STOPPED at least. It's not going further, 00:24:42.40\00:24:46.27 and in many people it actually, okay - reverses! 00:24:46.30\00:24:52.82 So that's good news. 00:24:52.85\00:24:54.22 It also means that if someone is watching today 00:24:54.25\00:24:56.22 and they have that increase in weight, 00:24:56.25\00:24:57.95 increase in blood pressure, increase in cholesterol, 00:24:57.98\00:25:00.20 all those different things - it MAY BE DIABETES, 00:25:00.23\00:25:02.87 then they should get on it as soon as possible! 00:25:02.90\00:25:05.90 If their blood sugars haven't been found to be elevated, 00:25:05.93\00:25:09.37 it's PROBABLY with those 3 or 4 things going on 00:25:09.40\00:25:13.04 at least PRE-DIABETES... 00:25:13.07\00:25:14.57 And those we know we can "reverse" 00:25:14.60\00:25:18.27 Those reports are in the literature. 00:25:18.30\00:25:20.67 So if you catch it when it's kind of in its 00:25:20.70\00:25:22.07 pre-diabetes state, then you can really do 00:25:22.10\00:25:24.85 something about it by decreasing the amount of calories in, 00:25:24.88\00:25:28.69 and INCREASING the amount of calories that you're expending, 00:25:28.72\00:25:31.59 i. e., exercise. 00:25:31.62\00:25:33.23 Some people say, "I can't control my will" 00:25:33.26\00:25:35.18 "What I WILL do- what I WON'T do so give me a pill" 00:25:35.21\00:25:37.49 You know, something like that. 00:25:37.52\00:25:40.61 That really - it sounds like is not a good approach... 00:25:40.64\00:25:43.30 The medications and what role do they play 00:25:43.33\00:25:45.85 or should they NOT play. 00:25:45.88\00:25:47.53 Well you already know from our previous discussion here 00:25:47.56\00:25:51.32 that raising the insulin levels by giving insulin shots 00:25:51.35\00:25:53.70 may make things actually worse! 00:25:53.73\00:25:55.68 ...Because high insulin levels are part of the problem. 00:25:55.71\00:25:58.03 Same thing with medications that kick the pancreas... 00:25:58.06\00:26:01.05 MAKE MORE INSULIN, MAKE MORE INSULIN! 00:26:01.08\00:26:02.45 It's kind of the same problem. 00:26:02.48\00:26:03.85 We do have some medications that tend to 00:26:03.88\00:26:05.41 decrease insulin levels... those make sense 00:26:05.44\00:26:07.75 and may be helpful. 00:26:07.78\00:26:09.15 Some provocative things you talked about 00:26:09.18\00:26:11.10 I've never heard about before "magnesium and iron" 00:26:11.13\00:26:13.23 We have about 1.5 minutes. 00:26:13.26\00:26:14.63 Tell me a little bit about these. 00:26:14.66\00:26:16.03 Oh Don, it's hardly enough time. 00:26:16.06\00:26:17.43 The average American is low in magnesium. 00:26:17.46\00:26:19.81 If we can increase the magnesium in our diet, 00:26:19.84\00:26:22.46 in our body, in our CELLS, 00:26:22.49\00:26:24.17 and it's the intracellular magnesium NOT the blood level. 00:26:24.20\00:26:26.73 The blood level doesn't correlate well, 00:26:26.76\00:26:28.55 but intracellular magnesium, if it goes up 00:26:28.58\00:26:30.62 it INCREASES the energy that the cells use, 00:26:30.65\00:26:33.40 and if you replace that magnesium, 00:26:33.43\00:26:36.43 you actually tend to see the parameters of diabetes 00:26:36.46\00:26:39.63 and this whole syndrome improving. 00:26:39.66\00:26:42.00 Real quick - foods high in magnesium. 00:26:42.03\00:26:43.83 Plants. Anything that's a plant. 00:26:43.86\00:26:46.37 Generally - you remember chlorophyll, 00:26:46.40\00:26:48.08 when you learned about it in high school, 00:26:48.11\00:26:49.86 the central little element in the middle is magnesium. 00:26:49.89\00:26:52.73 So there's a lot of it in plants, 00:26:52.76\00:26:54.13 and it's very deficient in animal products. 00:26:54.16\00:26:56.63 So pull over right now and eat some plants...
