Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:51.44\00:00:53.63 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:53.66\00:00:54.85 We're glad that you've joined us today. 00:00:54.88\00:00:56.51 We're going to be talking about our minds today. 00:00:56.54\00:00:59.48 We going to be talking about worship and modeling. 00:00:59.51\00:01:02.49 We're going to be talking with Dr. Timothy Jennings 00:01:02.52\00:01:05.84 He is a Christian psychiatrist from Dalton, Georgia, 00:01:05.87\00:01:09.63 and in your practice, you lead people to know really 00:01:09.66\00:01:13.32 about how to use their minds, 00:01:13.35\00:01:14.63 and how they were designed by God. 00:01:14.66\00:01:16.63 That's right, that's right - many people come with 00:01:16.66\00:01:19.34 various problems and those that are struggling with issues that 00:01:19.37\00:01:22.70 are of a religious nature or just issues where 00:01:22.73\00:01:26.45 they don't know how to intelligently 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.10 use the faculties of their mind, 00:01:29.13\00:01:30.21 and we work on teaching them how to do that 00:01:30.24\00:01:32.00 to recover self-governance and self-control. 00:01:32.03\00:01:34.02 And self-governance, I guess, is learned through understanding 00:01:34.05\00:01:38.34 how the mind is actually organized, 00:01:38.37\00:01:40.30 and you've developed a model, I think that is a gripping model 00:01:40.33\00:01:43.82 It's one of the reasons that 00:01:43.85\00:01:44.88 I invited you to be on the program - that we want to 00:01:44.91\00:01:47.88 review right now and it gives us a basis for talking about 00:01:47.91\00:01:51.09 modeling and worship... work us through that, will you? 00:01:51.12\00:01:53.90 Okay, the highest faculties we possess are those faculties 00:01:53.93\00:01:57.08 which God has created us with that make us in His image, 00:01:57.11\00:02:00.46 and as Christians, we call those faculties 00:02:00.49\00:02:02.82 our spiritual nature. 00:02:02.85\00:02:03.89 And the spiritual nature is not some ethereal, mystical vapor 00:02:03.92\00:02:08.60 that comes in and out of the body, 00:02:08.63\00:02:10.36 but it is those faculties, those abilities, those capabilities 00:02:10.39\00:02:13.69 that make us in God's image. 00:02:13.72\00:02:14.76 The highest of those faculties is our ability to reason, 00:02:14.79\00:02:17.70 weigh evidences, draw conclusions, 00:02:17.73\00:02:19.42 but reason is not enough! 00:02:19.45\00:02:21.30 God designed that reason should work in conjunction with 00:02:21.33\00:02:24.53 conscience and the conscience is the mental faculty that is 00:02:24.56\00:02:27.31 sensitive to the movements of the Spirit of God. 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.27 What's right and wrong... Exactly! 00:02:29.30\00:02:30.94 And God can impress us directly through his conscience. 00:02:30.97\00:02:34.88 But conscience isn't a work by 00:02:34.91\00:02:35.99 itself either - they are to work jointly. 00:02:36.02\00:02:38.19 We're going to go into worship today, 00:02:38.22\00:02:39.67 and God created us with an innate 00:02:39.71\00:02:41.13 desire or drive to worship, 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.95 and we're going to come back to that in just a minute. 00:02:42.98\00:02:46.37 The spiritual nature is to direct our will 00:02:46.40\00:02:48.84 which is the aspect of our mind that actually makes choices, 00:02:48.87\00:02:52.04 and we choose to implement the conclusions 00:02:52.07\00:02:55.43 of reason-conscience in the formation of healthy thoughts, 00:02:55.46\00:02:58.88 thinking the right things, formation of healthy beliefs, 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.46 values, morals and the right use of our imagination, 00:03:01.49\00:03:03.91 and in healthy relationships which are from our 00:03:03.94\00:03:08.44 natural desire for relationships and healthy attachments. 00:03:08.47\00:03:11.72 Okay, so those then are subordinate... 00:03:11.75\00:03:13.91 You have feelings at the bottom and you have reason at the top. 00:03:13.94\00:03:17.68 That's exactly right - In God's order of things 00:03:17.71\00:03:19.85 feelings always follow behind, like the caboose on the train, 00:03:19.88\00:03:22.90 they are never to be in charge or to dictate our decisions, 00:03:22.93\00:03:25.56 but they are to be part of our experience and we are not to 00:03:25.59\00:03:27.66 ignore our feelings. 00:03:27.69\00:03:28.77 I tell my patients that feelings are data; 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.09 they are information that you can elevate 00:03:31.12\00:03:32.73 to reason and conscience for evaluation and understanding 00:03:32.77\00:03:36.44 but reason and conscience remains in control. 00:03:36.47\00:03:38.43 So you can't just say... "I FELT that way, 00:03:38.46\00:03:40.47 and that's why I'm doing this" 00:03:40.50\00:03:41.67 When we get into worship, just feeling that that's the way 00:03:41.70\00:03:44.72 to worship is probably not going to be good enough then. 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.88 You're exactly right. 00:03:46.91\00:03:48.34 Well let me ask you a question before we go on... 00:03:48.37\00:03:50.23 You know, I have a diagram like that and it looks so nice, 00:03:50.26\00:03:52.19 and compact, but I wrote it down and if I could just follow 00:03:52.22\00:03:55.94 those steps, then I'd be all right; 00:03:55.97\00:03:57.97 if I reason about it, I know my conscience is there 00:03:58.00\00:04:00.26 and all those different things, I can maybe work my way 00:04:00.29\00:04:03.77 into being a pretty good person. 00:04:03.80\00:04:04.94 Would you say that's true or false? 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.36 Well, it's true and false... 00:04:06.39\00:04:09.78 Because it requires our participation - to be sure, 00:04:09.81\00:04:12.94 but all by ourselves, without the assistance or the input 00:04:12.97\00:04:17.18 or the cooperation of God, we would be lost. 00:04:17.21\00:04:19.95 We cannot do this alone and isolated... 00:04:19.98\00:04:22.26 And, one of the ways to help us from falling into such a trap, 00:04:22.29\00:04:26.81 would be to remember our proper relationship to God. 00:04:26.84\00:04:29.25 God is the Creator and we are created beings. 00:04:29.28\00:04:31.69 We are finite - there are things that we don't know, 00:04:31.72\00:04:34.02 and, therefore, remembering that that relationship 00:04:34.05\00:04:39.02 helps to keep us from becoming filled with self, 00:04:39.05\00:04:41.95 and letting our reason take control to the 00:04:41.98\00:04:44.31 exclusion of our conscience. 00:04:44.34\00:04:46.00 So when the Bible says He works in us both to will and to do His 00:04:46.07\00:04:49.89 good purpose - does He do it then? 00:04:49.92\00:04:52.87 Well yes and - I have to say this... no 00:04:52.90\00:04:56.57 He won't do it against your will. 00:04:56.60\00:04:58.79 Okay, so it requires our willful participation with Him, 00:04:58.82\00:05:02.98 and God's goal is to heal the faculties of the mind 00:05:03.01\00:05:05.45 that He created in us, to restore those faculties 00:05:05.48\00:05:07.76 in proper balance - so that we have a nobled reason 00:05:07.79\00:05:10.62 ...a clear conscience, healthy worship, 00:05:10.65\00:05:12.87 a strengthened will and we make healthy choices 00:05:12.90\00:05:17.05 moment-to-moment, that we are able to discern 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.07 the right from the wrong. 00:05:19.10\00:05:20.13 Now, some people I've heard pray... 00:05:20.16\00:05:21.59 "Lord, I surrender my will to You - You take control" 00:05:21.62\00:05:24.71 "I don't want to be in control anymore; 00:05:24.74\00:05:26.03 I've made too many mistakes" 00:05:26.06\00:05:27.95 I've even heard some people made the analogy of... 00:05:27.98\00:05:30.85 "Well whenever I'm in the driver's seat of my life, 00:05:30.88\00:05:33.54 I mess up and wreck my life, but I want to just ride in the 00:05:33.57\00:05:36.81 passenger seat and let the Lord 00:05:36.84\00:05:37.97 drive and be in control" Sounds good! 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.41 Yes, it sounds good but the Lord won't do it... 00:05:40.44\00:05:42.18 Because to take control of your life, 00:05:42.21\00:05:44.50 means to take control of your will and if He's in control, 00:05:44.53\00:05:47.53 and you're not, you're not able to freely choose to love Him. 00:05:47.56\00:05:50.09 And we used an analogy before, 00:05:50.12\00:05:51.49 but I'll just hit it real quick again... 00:05:51.52\00:05:52.91 Imagine you could take some nano-chips, 00:05:52.94\00:05:55.18 put them into your children... 00:05:55.21\00:05:56.56 Nano-chips are microscopic computer chips. 00:05:56.59\00:05:58.80 ...Put them into your children and have them lodge 00:05:58.83\00:06:00.33 in your children's brains, make a network that you could 00:06:00.36\00:06:02.54 interact with your computer... 00:06:02.57\00:06:03.84 And then you could program your children, 00:06:03.87\00:06:05.14 you could be in control... program your children to come 00:06:05.17\00:06:07.33 and tell you that they love you 4 times a day. 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.57 Would that be love? No... 00:06:09.60\00:06:11.27 No... and if God takes control of us - in that way, 00:06:11.30\00:06:16.16 then we are not able to love Him - 00:06:16.19\00:06:17.80 we only are robots at that point. 00:06:17.83\00:06:19.34 The way God takes control is by establishing 00:06:19.37\00:06:23.05 His truth in our hearts, His principles that we come 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.92 to understand and intelligently 00:06:25.95\00:06:27.57 cooperate with Him as free-will beings. 00:06:27.60\00:06:29.95 And then we make healthy choices that He has 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.93 helped us see and revealed to us... Right, exactly 00:06:31.96\00:06:34.66 Okay, then why does God say, or what does it mean when He 00:06:34.69\00:06:37.55 says, "Worship Me?" 00:06:37.58\00:06:39.24 You know, a lot of people think 00:06:39.27\00:06:40.75 that - critics will sometimes say - 00:06:40.78\00:06:42.59 "God says "worship Me" because He is insecure, 00:06:42.62\00:06:44.73 He needs our affection. " 00:06:44.76\00:06:45.90 Some say, "Well no, God is a loving Being and He wants us 00:06:45.93\00:06:48.37 to worship Him because He wants 00:06:48.40\00:06:49.43 to share in that relationship with us. " 00:06:49.46\00:06:50.93 Others will say, "Well God is the Creator and He is the 00:06:50.96\00:06:54.68 Sovereign, He is the all-powerful and He has the 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.53 right to our worship. " 00:06:56.56\00:06:57.67 But there is another reason for worship... 00:06:57.70\00:06:59.98 Those things may be somewhat true... 00:07:00.01\00:07:01.69 Those MAY BE somewhat true, but if we leave it there, 00:07:01.72\00:07:03.86 we miss the bigger reason. 00:07:03.89\00:07:04.98 And the bigger reason is... 00:07:05.01\00:07:06.33 God created a law in the universe that I call 00:07:06.36\00:07:09.44 the law of worship; 00:07:09.47\00:07:10.52 psychiatrists call it... the law of modeling. 00:07:10.55\00:07:13.26 And the law of modeling in the Bible is referred to as... 00:07:13.29\00:07:16.26 "By beholding, we become changed" 00:07:16.29\00:07:18.48 And we actually assimilate ourselves or adapt ourselves 00:07:18.51\00:07:21.32 or become like things we worship and admire. 00:07:21.35\00:07:24.40 So the reason for worship was to help us. 00:07:24.43\00:07:26.69 Exactly! As the highest created beings on this planet, 00:07:26.72\00:07:29.73 there is nothing we can worship, on this planet, and grow. 00:07:29.76\00:07:35.00 Everything we worship on this planet will devolve. 00:07:35.03\00:07:37.46 In ancient Egypt, there was a frog-god. 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.55 Imagine, today, if you were a worshipper of the frog-god, 00:07:40.58\00:07:42.87 you might have a little idol of a frog in your home, 00:07:42.90\00:07:44.57 and you gather your family around at the end of the day, 00:07:44.60\00:07:46.97 and say, "Dear lord frog, 00:07:47.00\00:07:48.18 Bless mommy and daddy and help me be like you. " 00:07:48.22\00:07:50.26 And then he hops away and you're in trouble. Yeah 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.31 Or in India today, there is a form of Hinduism, 00:07:52.34\00:07:55.66 a sect of Hinduism, that worships the rat. 00:07:55.69\00:07:57.88 And if you go into one of their temples, 00:07:57.91\00:07:59.50 they have a large idol of a rat; 00:07:59.53\00:08:01.17 the temple is infested with rats and they have bowls of grain 00:08:01.20\00:08:04.63 around this idol of a rat... 00:08:04.66\00:08:06.11 And the worshipper goes up and picks up a handful of grain, 00:08:06.14\00:08:08.99 and lets the rats come eat out of their hand, 00:08:09.02\00:08:10.92 and it's considered a great blessing 00:08:10.95\00:08:12.47 to be bitten by a rat! OH man... 00:08:12.50\00:08:15.32 And they believe in reincarnation, 00:08:15.35\00:08:17.36 and they pray that when they die, 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.97 they might be reincarnated as a rat. 00:08:19.00\00:08:21.12 Now consider this... beings created in the 00:08:21.15\00:08:23.02 image of God with dignity, nobility of character, 00:08:23.05\00:08:25.66 intelligence, individuality, PRAYING as their 00:08:25.69\00:08:28.60 highest goal to become a rat. 00:08:28.63\00:08:30.21 Yes, that's not being restored to any image 00:08:30.25\00:08:33.24 that we want to be restored to. 00:08:33.27\00:08:34.68 Exactly! God says worship Him because it is only 00:08:34.71\00:08:37.49 in worshipping Him that His intelligent creatures 00:08:37.52\00:08:39.35 throughout the universe continually 00:08:39.38\00:08:41.08 advance and continually grow. 00:08:41.11\00:08:42.64 He is the only Being in the universe 00:08:42.67\00:08:44.85 than can be worshipped and not be selfish 00:08:44.88\00:08:46.63 because by worshipping Him, 00:08:46.66\00:08:47.94 He is giving of Himself to all creation. 00:08:47.98\00:08:49.85 But any other being in the universe that seeks worship, 00:08:49.88\00:08:53.16 becomes self-centered because they don't have anything 00:08:53.19\00:08:55.21 they can give that will cause the rest of the beings 00:08:55.24\00:08:57.21 that are worshipping them to grow in advance, 00:08:57.24\00:08:58.72 and actually destroys the beings 00:08:58.75\00:09:00.27 that worship any other being. 00:09:00.30\00:09:01.33 So when we say - Why does God say, "Worship me," 00:09:01.36\00:09:05.85 you're asking - Why does the Creator God say "Worship Me" 00:09:05.88\00:09:08.92 because there are many other gods that say "Worship me" 00:09:08.95\00:09:11.24 I mean, all around us, every day 00:09:11.27\00:09:13.63 they are calling upon us to do that. 00:09:13.66\00:09:16.35 It is only the true Creator God that can say - Worship Me, 00:09:16.38\00:09:19.70 in a healthy way because He, by worshipping Him, 00:09:19.73\00:09:22.62 He is giving of Himself for your own growth and advancement. 00:09:22.65\00:09:25.51 It makes it a whole new idea about the exodus; 00:09:25.54\00:09:28.58 He led them out of all those different things 00:09:28.61\00:09:30.02 they worshipped whether it be scarab beetle and bugs, 00:09:30.05\00:09:33.95 or the Nile and then comes and says, "Worship Me" 00:09:33.98\00:09:36.85 and He says, "Why? Because I created heavens and earth. " 00:09:36.88\00:09:39.53 Well and Paul, in Romans the first chapter talks about 00:09:39.56\00:09:42.08 people who reject the Creator God, 00:09:42.11\00:09:43.67 and worship the created THINGS, 00:09:43.70\00:09:45.41 that they minds become darkened and futile. 00:09:45.44\00:09:48.07 And it's not because God curses their mind, 00:09:48.10\00:09:50.48 it's when you worship a frog, as we described, or a rat, 00:09:50.51\00:09:53.50 where else can your mind go - but in the darkness? 00:09:53.53\00:09:56.11 So then these people that claim not to believe in God 00:09:56.14\00:09:59.20 so they don't need to worship, there's really nothing to that. 00:09:59.23\00:10:02.03 Well, everyone worships something. 00:10:02.06\00:10:05.55 People who claim to not believe in God, they still worship. 00:10:05.59\00:10:10.10 Some may call worship a drive for meaning or purpose, 00:10:10.13\00:10:12.57 looking outside of one's self or frame of orientation, 00:10:12.60\00:10:15.68 which gives focus, meaning purpose and direction to life. 00:10:15.71\00:10:18.84 "Centering" I've heard. Yes 00:10:18.87\00:10:20.80 Some might worship the Dallas Cowboys; 00:10:20.83\00:10:22.43 some might worship the scientific method or themselves, 00:10:22.46\00:10:25.10 or money, but everyone worships something. 00:10:25.13\00:10:28.05 Karl Jasper, in his book "Way to Wisdom" states... 00:10:28.08\00:10:31.69 That's an interesting quotation. 00:10:36.78\00:10:38.11 So in other words, he is saying... 00:10:38.14\00:10:39.37 Whatever you center on, that really becomes your God. 00:10:39.40\00:10:43.14 Yes, and Richard Creel, in "Religion and Doubt" states, 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.73 And so the question is not "Are we worshipping?" 00:10:54.56\00:10:57.88 The question is, "What are we worshipping?" 00:10:57.91\00:11:00.64 So it's really a false dichotomy or it's a false premise to say- 00:11:00.67\00:11:05.45 "Because I don't believe, 00:11:05.48\00:11:06.51 I don't worship" That's exactly right 00:11:06.54\00:11:08.45 Because if you ARE, you you worship. 00:11:08.49\00:11:10.38 That's exactly right... 00:11:10.41\00:11:11.45 If you have awareness, you worship. 00:11:11.48\00:11:13.60 So the question is... "What are you worshipping?" 00:11:13.63\00:11:15.86 And maybe in your practice with your patients, 00:11:15.89\00:11:19.07 you have to figure out what it is they exactly are worshipping 00:11:19.10\00:11:21.98 and that helps you diagnose or see-through 00:11:22.01\00:11:25.49 and understand the problems they're dealing with. 00:11:25.52\00:11:28.66 Yes, because worship directly affects the health of reason, 00:11:28.69\00:11:32.32 and the health of conscience, the use of the will, 00:11:32.35\00:11:35.14 and the overall health of the mind. 00:11:35.17\00:11:36.66 It's interesting and all the commandments, 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.63 when you think about them, they are related to worship 00:11:38.66\00:11:41.20 and they have to do with focusing on God 00:11:41.23\00:11:43.83 and not others and that really affects our relationships. 00:11:43.86\00:11:46.86 I was thinking, for instance, the 7th commandment, 00:11:46.89\00:11:49.32 "Don't commit adultery" is really saying 00:11:49.35\00:11:51.71 don't worship someone else or don't give someone else 00:11:51.74\00:11:54.44 attention under God than your wife or your husband. Right 00:11:54.47\00:11:58.42 So those kind of things are what you see playing out in your 00:11:58.45\00:12:02.33 practice and what you're dealing with from day-to-day. 00:12:02.36\00:12:05.02 Can a person who has never accepted Christ 00:12:05.05\00:12:09.53 or, you know, like we have accepted, 00:12:09.56\00:12:12.16 we hear about that in a Western culture, 00:12:12.19\00:12:14.61 accepting Christ in 3 points in a poem or whatever... 00:12:14.64\00:12:18.54 Can they be worshipping God, the true God? 00:12:18.57\00:12:23.02 Well there's a great quote from a 19th century theologian 00:12:23.05\00:12:27.07 that many of your audience may have heard of, 00:12:27.10\00:12:28.49 the name - George MacDonald, and his quote is... 00:12:28.52\00:12:30.54 "Everything depends on the kind of God one believes in. 00:12:30.57\00:12:33.97 Instead of automatically blaming the person 00:12:34.00\00:12:36.24 who does not believe in God, we should ask first - 00:12:36.27\00:12:39.34 if his notion of God is a God that ought to be believed in. " 00:12:39.37\00:12:43.50 And so, some representations of 00:12:43.53\00:12:47.52 God are so distorted possibly... Hideous... 00:12:47.55\00:12:52.72 That a person, if that was the only representation 00:12:52.75\00:12:56.05 given to them, might make the BEST decision 00:12:56.08\00:12:58.67 to reject that representation of God. 00:12:58.70\00:13:01.38 And so there are people that 00:13:01.41\00:13:02.53 may have not heard the true picture of God. 00:13:02.56\00:13:04.82 Now, Paul in Romans the first chapter says that... 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.91 God's invisible qualities and divine nature have been 00:13:06.94\00:13:10.46 clearly seen in nature so that men are without excuse. 00:13:10.49\00:13:13.61 And so there are realities about God that have been 00:13:13.64\00:13:16.57 revealed in nature and the Holy Spirit is working 00:13:16.60\00:13:19.07 in everyone's heart and mind whether they have made 00:13:19.10\00:13:21.36 an affirmative proclamation of a belief in God or not, 00:13:21.39\00:13:25.07 so that it is possible for someone to be following God 00:13:25.10\00:13:28.98 in the leadings of the Holy Spirit - 00:13:29.01\00:13:31.35 that have not yet come to an affirmative 00:13:31.38\00:13:33.23 confession of faith in God ... Or in Christ. 00:13:33.26\00:13:36.58 Certainly, I mean even in the Old Testament, 00:13:36.61\00:13:38.97 He was called the Messiah and 00:13:39.00\00:13:40.92 wasn't called Christ until later on. 00:13:40.95\00:13:42.64 Well even in the issue of Christ Himself, He said... 00:13:42.67\00:13:45.05 that in the last day, they will come to Him and 00:13:45.08\00:13:47.15 say - Lord, Lord, we prophesied in Your name. 00:13:47.18\00:13:49.30 We cast out demons in Your name. 00:13:49.33\00:13:51.29 We performed miracles in Your name. 00:13:51.32\00:13:53.18 Not in the name of Buddha or Hare Krishna, 00:13:53.21\00:13:54.85 in the name of Jesus and He will say - 00:13:54.88\00:13:56.56 "Get thee hence, ye workers of iniquity, I never knew you" 00:13:56.59\00:14:01.18 So you can even have an affirmative faith in Christ 00:14:01.21\00:14:02.64 and still not be worshipping the true God. 00:14:02.67\00:14:04.22 We're talking with Dr. Timothy Jennings 00:14:04.25\00:14:07.07 We're talking about the mind. 00:14:07.10\00:14:08.55 We're talking about worship. 00:14:08.58\00:14:09.92 We're talking about modeling. 00:14:09.95\00:14:11.46 Join us when we come back. 00:14:11.49\00:14:12.96 We'll be talking about television, 00:14:12.99\00:14:14.70 and it's effect on our minds - You won't want to miss it. 00:14:14.73\00:14:19.28 Have you found yourself wishing that 00:14:25.36\00:14:26.78 you could shed a few pounds? 00:14:26.81\00:14:28.28 Have you been on a diet for most of your life 00:14:28.31\00:14:30.48 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:30.51\00:14:33.57 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:14:33.60\00:14:36.57 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:14:36.60\00:14:39.33 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:39.36\00:14:42.27 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:14:42.30\00:14:44.41 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:44.44\00:14:46.39 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:14:46.42\00:14:49.21 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:49.24\00:14:52.14 by thousands who were able to eat more and lose weight 00:14:52.17\00:14:55.38 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:14:55.41\00:14:58.03 through lifestyle medicine. 00:14:58.06\00:14:59.87 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:14:59.90\00:15:03.62 and in this booklet, they present a sensible 00:15:03.65\00:15:05.86 approach to eating, nutrition and lifestyle changes 00:15:05.89\00:15:08.78 that can help you prevent heart disease, diabetes, 00:15:08.81\00:15:11.32 and EVEN cancer. 00:15:11.35\00:15:12.49 Call or write today for your free copy of... 00:15:12.52\00:15:14.91 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:14.94\00:15:16.41 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:15:16.44\00:15:19.94 It's ABSOLUTELY free of charge, so call or write today. 00:15:19.97\00:15:24.46 Welcome back, we've been talking with Dr. Timothy Jennings 00:15:31.04\00:15:34.15 We've been talking about our MIND and how God has 00:15:34.18\00:15:37.28 organized it and put it together in a way that He can really be 00:15:37.31\00:15:41.11 leading our lives if we allow Him to. 00:15:41.14\00:15:43.49 You've suggested that there is a hierarchy in the mind 00:15:43.52\00:15:46.84 with the spiritual leading out; 00:15:46.87\00:15:48.59 that being the conscience and the reason and worship 00:15:48.62\00:15:51.87 and then the will being OUR choice about what we're 00:15:51.90\00:15:54.92 going to do with that information, 00:15:54.95\00:15:56.52 and then the thoughts and then, of course, the feelings 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.77 of being down at the bottom- 00:15:58.81\00:15:59.84 important but still following it along - giving affirmation 00:15:59.87\00:16:03.88 to our good choices, hopefully. Right 00:16:03.91\00:16:05.57 Is that a good way to summarize it? Right 00:16:05.60\00:16:08.16 And we want to talk a little bit more about modeling now. 00:16:08.19\00:16:10.68 You've suggested that God wants us to worship Him, 00:16:10.71\00:16:14.83 follow His example, not only for His joy but for our benefit 00:16:14.86\00:16:19.30 for our re-creation. Right 00:16:19.33\00:16:20.99 And, you've done some research or looked at some research 00:16:21.02\00:16:24.12 that has to do with modeling. 00:16:24.15\00:16:25.63 I think you wanted to share something about 00:16:25.66\00:16:26.98 that with us on television. 00:16:27.01\00:16:28.04 There was an interesting study done by Dr. Centerwall 00:16:28.07\00:16:31.01 published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" 00:16:31.04\00:16:33.10 and Dr. Centerwall wanted to diagram or actually document 00:16:33.13\00:16:38.63 the effects of television on the society, 00:16:38.66\00:16:40.86 and he asked the question... 00:16:40.89\00:16:42.25 Does television in a society increase the amount of violence 00:16:42.28\00:16:46.24 violence in that society? 00:16:46.28\00:16:47.60 In other words, if they watch it, 00:16:47.63\00:16:48.95 would they behold it and then become changed? Exactly 00:16:48.98\00:16:53.04 And he wanted to use a very black and white demarcation 00:16:53.07\00:16:56.58 measurement of violence, so he used 00:16:56.61\00:16:58.43 homicide rates - murder rates. 00:16:58.47\00:17:00.16 And he looked at murder rates in the United States, 00:17:00.19\00:17:02.62 Canada and South Africa. 00:17:02.65\00:17:04.23 Now the reason he chose these 3 countries... 00:17:04.26\00:17:05.90 The United States and Canada introduced television in 1945. 00:17:05.93\00:17:09.41 South Africa did not introduce television until 1974. 00:17:09.44\00:17:13.15 He chose Canada because Canada has very strict 00:17:13.18\00:17:15.92 gun control laws and the United States doesn't. 00:17:15.95\00:17:18.70 He didn't want any increase in murder rates in the 00:17:18.73\00:17:21.78 United States to be attributed to the fact that guns are so 00:17:21.81\00:17:24.35 easily available... 00:17:24.38\00:17:25.64 And so he looked at these 3 societies... 00:17:25.67\00:17:27.89 and from 1945... Oh, and by the way, 00:17:27.92\00:17:30.89 in South Africa, just to do away with any possibility of 00:17:30.92\00:17:33.63 racial issues and the apartheid policies playing a role, 00:17:33.66\00:17:36.33 he looked at white on white murder only. Okay 00:17:36.36\00:17:39.89 And from 1945-1974, in the United States, 00:17:39.92\00:17:45.26 after the introduction of television, 00:17:45.29\00:17:47.12 the murder rates increased by 93%, 00:17:47.15\00:17:50.46 and in Canada during that same time, 00:17:50.49\00:17:53.23 they went up to 92%. 00:17:53.26\00:17:54.92 But in South Africa where TV had not been introduced 00:17:54.95\00:17:57.34 during the same period of time, murder rates dropped by 7%. 00:17:57.37\00:18:01.23 Now, his next aspect was to look at these 3 countries 00:18:01.26\00:18:05.51 from 1974-1987 because television was introduced 00:18:05.54\00:18:10.35 into South Africa in 1974 and what we found was 00:18:10.38\00:18:14.17 in South Africa, the murder rates jumped by 130% 00:18:14.20\00:18:18.73 after television was introduced; white on white murder. 00:18:18.76\00:18:21.59 Wow - so there was a HUGE correlation then. 00:18:21.62\00:18:25.28 Yes and the study has been so powerful, 00:18:25.31\00:18:27.97 and other studies have been done that confirmed this study. 00:18:28.00\00:18:31.01 The "American Academy of Pediatrics" has come on record 00:18:31.04\00:18:34.88 and stated - called that no children, under the age of 2, 00:18:34.91\00:18:39.28 should watch any amount of television at all. 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.32 And those that are 2 and older 00:18:41.35\00:18:42.65 should only watch very limited 00:18:42.68\00:18:44.43 and restricted amounts of television. 00:18:44.46\00:18:45.76 And that was based on this study. 00:18:45.79\00:18:47.31 This study and other studies like it, yes. 00:18:47.34\00:18:48.86 So should people be watching us? 00:18:48.89\00:18:51.76 That's a very good question! 00:18:51.79\00:18:54.03 I'll leave that answer to you. 00:18:54.06\00:18:55.77 Well I think there's probably a difference between 00:18:55.80\00:18:58.00 programming that's positive in nature, 00:18:58.03\00:19:01.17 and negative in nature, wouldn't you agree? 00:19:01.20\00:19:03.07 Yes, there's no question about that. 00:19:03.10\00:19:04.83 The television itself is not an evil instrument, 00:19:04.86\00:19:07.18 it's what is coming across the television, 00:19:07.21\00:19:09.72 and it can be used for good or for evil... 00:19:09.75\00:19:11.76 And much of the material, as we know in our society, 00:19:11.79\00:19:14.27 that is put out on television is ultimately destructive in nature 00:19:14.30\00:19:18.38 So maybe the reason the "American Academy of Pediatrics" 00:19:18.41\00:19:21.63 didn't get into it is they didn't want to be making 00:19:21.66\00:19:23.80 a moral judgment about what 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.16 is right or wrong - just to avoid it all. Yes 00:19:25.19\00:19:27.48 Yes, especially for children. 00:19:27.51\00:19:28.60 Children - a 2-year-old wouldn't 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.13 be able to benefit from this program... That's right 00:19:30.16\00:19:34.41 Yes, usually television is not to benefit children at any time, 00:19:34.44\00:19:38.98 many times because they want just something to take 00:19:39.01\00:19:41.48 the child's attention so they don't have to watch the child. 00:19:41.51\00:19:44.45 That's the unfortunate reality. Yes - exactly 00:19:44.48\00:19:46.73 So maybe there are multiple factors, 00:19:46.76\00:19:48.45 but I think that the research clearly shows that by beholding 00:19:48.48\00:19:51.91 the concepts, the images, the things on TV, 00:19:51.94\00:19:55.13 that destructive elements occur. 00:19:55.16\00:19:56.81 Television also, different from radio. 00:19:56.84\00:20:00.75 You see, when you listen to radio, 00:20:00.78\00:20:02.32 you have to use your own imagination to visualize 00:20:02.35\00:20:05.27 and create an image in your mind. 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.70 When you read a book, you have to do that too. 00:20:06.73\00:20:08.52 But with television, the images are created for you; 00:20:08.55\00:20:12.47 you don't have to do any thinking whatever, 00:20:12.50\00:20:14.94 you just sit there and zone-out. 00:20:14.97\00:20:17.08 Someone has told me that reading is probably the best, 00:20:17.11\00:20:20.06 and then next is audio, then television - 00:20:20.09\00:20:22.62 in terms of the amount of the mind you're using. 00:20:22.65\00:20:26.91 I don't know the truth of that or not, 00:20:26.94\00:20:30.37 but that would seem to go along with what you're saying. 00:20:30.40\00:20:33.44 The other aspect to this is that television gets people 00:20:33.47\00:20:36.49 to participate vicariously, meaning that you can 00:20:36.52\00:20:39.26 get these emotional responses and you can be choosing 00:20:39.29\00:20:42.14 things in your mind that are unhealthy. 00:20:42.17\00:20:44.67 Remember Christ said in Matthew chapter 5, 00:20:44.70\00:20:47.10 He told the people there - You say that if you commit 00:20:47.13\00:20:49.36 adultery, you've committed sin. 00:20:49.39\00:20:50.80 And I say if you look at a woman 00:20:50.84\00:20:52.18 with lust in your heart, you've committed sin. 00:20:52.22\00:20:54.52 You say, if you commit murder, you commit sin. 00:20:54.55\00:20:55.76 I say, if you hate your brother in your heart, you commit sin. 00:20:55.79\00:20:58.21 And in television, it sets up scenario after scenario, 00:20:58.24\00:21:01.13 after scenario in which you find yourself in a situation 00:21:01.16\00:21:03.88 with some poor maiden in distress running down a pier 00:21:03.91\00:21:06.67 for her life with 3 giant villains after her, 00:21:06.70\00:21:09.89 about to destroy her and kill her and she stumbles upon a 00:21:09.92\00:21:11.95 pistol and in your mind, your looking at them going - 00:21:11.98\00:21:14.09 "Shoot them, shoot them" 00:21:14.12\00:21:15.33 So it's leading you down a pathway, 00:21:15.36\00:21:19.20 and leading your mind down a pathway that you 00:21:19.23\00:21:22.08 would never choose any other way. 00:21:22.11\00:21:24.38 Exactly, and it's having you do 00:21:24.41\00:21:25.84 this repetitively in multiple scenarios. 00:21:25.87\00:21:28.33 So that's really a form of worship then, 00:21:28.36\00:21:30.97 and it kind of gets your focus off the right thing, 00:21:31.00\00:21:33.21 and models behavior of a type of person that you don't want to 00:21:33.24\00:21:37.66 end up being like and kind of sets your mind... 00:21:37.69\00:21:40.83 You want to stay away from that. 00:21:40.86\00:21:41.98 Yes and it also creates a world that is not possible 00:21:42.01\00:21:45.71 for you to create in your own experience. 00:21:45.74\00:21:47.98 I mean, imagine the young girl at home that sees 00:21:48.01\00:21:52.16 these images on TV and she then becomes dissatisfied 00:21:52.19\00:21:56.77 with her own life at home... 00:21:56.80\00:21:58.04 She wants to be this other person. 00:21:58.07\00:21:59.62 Well this other person is just a fictitious imagination 00:21:59.65\00:22:02.43 created by lights, cameras, Hollywood trickery, 00:22:02.46\00:22:06.59 and other things, but she now isn't satisfied 00:22:06.62\00:22:09.07 with herself, she's restless, she's uneasy, 00:22:09.10\00:22:11.08 and she is not at peace with herself at home. 00:22:11.11\00:22:13.05 A huge tool for propaganda and for manipulating. 00:22:13.08\00:22:17.83 Well, that would be a negative side of worship and modeling. 00:22:17.86\00:22:22.39 How can we choose more appropriate ways to 00:22:22.42\00:22:25.56 worship God, healthy ways to worship God? 00:22:25.59\00:22:28.12 Well, most importantly, we want forms of worship 00:22:28.15\00:22:31.06 that are going to strengthen our spiritual nature. 00:22:31.09\00:22:33.13 In other words, strengthen our reasoning abilities, 00:22:33.16\00:22:35.42 cleanse our conscience, have healthy relationships 00:22:35.45\00:22:38.82 with God and with each other 00:22:38.85\00:22:41.28 to improve our values and belief systems constantly, 00:22:41.31\00:22:47.37 to use our imagination in healthy ways, 00:22:47.40\00:22:49.45 not in unhealthy ways. 00:22:49.48\00:22:50.64 Now the way we do this is by thinking. 00:22:50.67\00:22:53.03 Paul said in Romans chapter 14, "Let everyone be fully 00:22:53.06\00:22:55.46 persuaded in his own mind. " 00:22:55.49\00:22:56.79 Isaiah 1:18-20, God said, "Come let us reason together 00:22:56.82\00:23:03.03 though your sins be like scarlet they will be made like snow 00:23:03.06\00:23:06.05 Though they are red like crimson they will be made like wool" 00:23:06.08\00:23:08.42 And it is the process of reasoning out the truth, 00:23:08.45\00:23:12.24 thinking it through, weighing it out, 00:23:12.27\00:23:14.77 coming to a conclusion and then willfully choosing the truth 00:23:14.80\00:23:17.68 that we cooperate with God for the healing of our minds. 00:23:17.71\00:23:20.64 So that's the next part of that verse... 00:23:20.67\00:23:22.19 If you're willing and obedient, you'll eat the good of the land. 00:23:22.22\00:23:25.02 Exactly... and what is it the Holy Spirit will do for us, 00:23:25.05\00:23:27.89 and what the Holy Spirit will NOT do for us? 00:23:27.92\00:23:29.70 What the Holy Spirit does is... 00:23:29.73\00:23:31.16 The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. 00:23:31.19\00:23:32.88 The Holy Spirit enlightens our minds. 00:23:32.91\00:23:34.76 The way I like to see it is that when I look 00:23:34.79\00:23:36.25 at the Godhead and their different functions, 00:23:36.28\00:23:37.74 I see Christ as a member of the Godhead 00:23:37.77\00:23:40.09 who has been intervening to bring historical facts to light. 00:23:40.12\00:23:44.69 In other words, He has actually been acting and doing. 00:23:44.72\00:23:46.71 In the context of history... 00:23:46.74\00:23:49.04 Have you ever seen those connect-the-dot books? 00:23:49.07\00:23:51.19 Okay, everyone of those dots would be some historical 00:23:51.22\00:23:53.96 event that Christ has done - whether it be leading the 00:23:53.99\00:23:56.38 Children of Israel out of Egypt and being the Rock 00:23:56.41\00:23:58.10 that Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 10, 00:23:58.13\00:24:00.81 that watered them, or whether it be at the Cross. 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.75 He has given us dots of historical fact. 00:24:03.78\00:24:06.06 The Holy Spirit comes along and connects the dots. 00:24:06.09\00:24:08.89 So it enlightens our mind to the truth. 00:24:08.92\00:24:10.72 And so the Holy Spirit enlightens our mind to truth, 00:24:10.75\00:24:13.42 but THEN the Holy Spirit leaves us FREE. 00:24:13.45\00:24:15.42 The Holy Spirit will NEVER make the choice for us. 00:24:15.45\00:24:19.00 We have to exercise the will. 00:24:19.03\00:24:20.43 Exactly and then when we make the choice though - 00:24:20.46\00:24:23.20 then we receive divine power to follow through on that choice. 00:24:23.23\00:24:26.52 Consider the example of the smoker... 00:24:26.55\00:24:27.99 A smoker may pray all he wants for deliverance from smoking, 00:24:28.02\00:24:32.61 but if he never chooses to set the cigarettes down, 00:24:32.64\00:24:34.85 God will not send an angel to snatch it out of his mouth. 00:24:34.88\00:24:37.70 That's correct... But when he does choose 00:24:37.73\00:24:40.33 to set the cigarettes down, he receives divine power 00:24:40.36\00:24:43.02 to follow through on that choice. 00:24:43.05\00:24:44.34 So this is really a form of worship where we then 00:24:44.37\00:24:49.30 exercise our reason and we do things that can 00:24:49.33\00:24:51.86 strengthen that or put the right decisions in front of us, 00:24:51.89\00:24:55.08 then we exercise our will to follow through on those... 00:24:55.11\00:24:57.21 So Bible reading would be effective, 00:24:57.24\00:24:59.59 and reading Christian literature and those kind of things. 00:24:59.62\00:25:02.42 Not only effective, NECESSARY... 00:25:02.45\00:25:04.12 We don't possess within us the understanding of 00:25:04.15\00:25:06.80 which direction to go - to go left, to go right... 00:25:06.83\00:25:08.85 Imagine yourself being in a dark cave... No light whatever! 00:25:08.88\00:25:13.22 And you're lost - and then you see a light 00:25:13.25\00:25:15.56 shinning from way down the other end of the cave... 00:25:15.59\00:25:18.57 If you follow that light, that light leads you out. 00:25:18.60\00:25:20.96 CHRIST is the light. 00:25:20.99\00:25:22.26 We are in a darkened world and only by following the light 00:25:22.29\00:25:25.42 as revealed in the life of Christ, 00:25:25.45\00:25:26.57 and ultimately in His Word, 00:25:26.60\00:25:27.67 are we able to map our chart of course to health in this world 00:25:27.70\00:25:32.49 So the Bible then becomes very important 00:25:32.52\00:25:34.66 in helping people be healed from whatever they're facing, 00:25:34.69\00:25:38.81 especially mental illness or these other things, 00:25:38.84\00:25:41.74 and your practice helps them get out of maladaptive 00:25:41.77\00:25:44.75 worship schemes, if you will. 00:25:44.78\00:25:46.25 There's no question about it. 00:25:46.28\00:25:47.67 It's become very popular recently in medicine - 00:25:47.70\00:25:50.65 to include spiritual issues or worship in medical practices. 00:25:50.68\00:25:54.71 There has been a lot of research done about it. 00:25:54.74\00:25:56.67 but particularly, meditation has become very popular. 00:25:56.70\00:26:00.51 That could be dangerous if it's not the right kind, right? 00:26:00.54\00:26:03.17 Exactly, and I wanted to talk about that with you. 00:26:03.20\00:26:05.78 There are certain forms of meditation that require people 00:26:05.81\00:26:08.40 to empty their mind. 00:26:08.43\00:26:09.64 They ask people to close their eyes, to take cleansing breaths, 00:26:09.67\00:26:12.34 to repeat a certain word or certain short phrase, 00:26:12.37\00:26:15.61 repetitively, over and over and over again. 00:26:15.64\00:26:18.98 To empty one's mind, exactly right... Probably not good 00:26:19.01\00:26:21.78 And in the Bible, you will not 00:26:21.81\00:26:24.77 find that type of meditation anywhere. 00:26:24.80\00:26:26.48 I was at a conference where this was being taught 00:26:26.51\00:26:29.52 to healthcare providers, over 2,000 people there, 00:26:29.55\00:26:32.13 and healthcare providers are being taught 00:26:32.16\00:26:33.57 this type of meditation... 00:26:33.60\00:26:34.74 And they had a rabbi, and they had several different 00:26:34.77\00:26:37.12 ministers or priests from Christian denominations... 00:26:37.15\00:26:39.21 And I asked them all... 00:26:39.24\00:26:40.42 If this type of meditation could be documented 00:26:40.45\00:26:44.08 in either the Torah or the Bible, 00:26:44.11\00:26:46.23 and all of them have said, "no," it's outside the Bible. 00:26:46.26\00:26:49.12 You find it in Judaism and you find it in Christianity, 00:26:49.15\00:26:51.91 but not in the Bible. 00:26:51.94\00:26:53.84 Very dangerous then. 00:26:53.87\00:26:55.03 Oh yes, because when the Bible calls us to meditate, 00:26:55.06\00:26:57.76 it calls us to meditate on God's handiwork, 00:26:57.79\00:27:00.21 or in God's Word, on nature, on His creation... 00:27:00.24\00:27:02.99 In other words, we have a focus that is higher 00:27:03.02\00:27:05.53 and outside of ourselves that lifts us up and ennobles us. 00:27:05.56\00:27:08.46 So focusing in on Him and on His Word, 00:27:08.49\00:27:12.14 will direct us the right way. 00:27:12.17\00:27:13.83 We shouldn't be clearing our minds because then the 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.86 devil can come in and take over. 00:27:15.89\00:27:17.54 But, if we open our minds to the Word, He'll take over. Exactly 00:27:17.57\00:27:20.41 We've been talking with Dr. Timothy Jennings 00:27:21.33\00:27:24.55 We've been talking about the mind, 00:27:24.58\00:27:27.22 the law of modeling and the law of worship. 00:27:27.25\00:27:30.57 We need to be focusing in on our relationship 00:27:30.60\00:27:33.96 with the Lord and His revealed Word. 00:27:33.99\00:27:36.66 We've learned about the effects of some of the things 00:27:36.69\00:27:39.35 in our culture that can be very damaging or very helpful 00:27:39.38\00:27:42.43 depending on whether or not God is involved. 00:27:42.46\00:27:44.58 If you've been listening today and you've been gripped by 00:27:44.61\00:27:47.03 this presentation and you'd like more information, 00:27:47.06\00:27:49.83 we hope that you do contact us. 00:27:49.86\00:27:51.82 We hope that today's program will bring healing 00:27:51.85\00:27:54.22 and health to you and that as a result 00:27:54.25\00:27:56.30 you'll have Health that Lasts for a Lifetime. 00:27:56.33\00:27:58.35
