Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:49.54\00:00:51.49 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:51.52\00:00:52.95 and today we're going to be talking about diabetes. 00:00:52.98\00:00:55.53 Do you have diabetes? 00:00:55.56\00:00:56.93 Does someone you KNOW have diabetes? 00:00:56.96\00:00:58.66 It's a huge crisis in this country and around the world 00:00:58.69\00:01:03.13 that's increasing and our specialist today, 00:01:03.16\00:01:06.38 the person we're talking with is Dr. Tim Arnott... 00:01:06.41\00:01:08.88 And really, you're a specialist in family medicine, 00:01:08.91\00:01:12.26 and also lifestyle medicine, 00:01:12.29\00:01:14.05 but you see a lot of diabetics at the 00:01:14.08\00:01:16.22 Lifestyle Center of America, is that correct? 00:01:16.25\00:01:18.07 We see well over 40% of our patients with diabetes. 00:01:18.10\00:01:22.83 And what exactly is diabetes, 00:01:22.86\00:01:24.57 and what kind of a problem is it 00:01:24.60\00:01:27.71 in our country and around the world? 00:01:27.74\00:01:29.37 Well basically, diabetes is having too much sugar 00:01:29.40\00:01:33.51 inside your blood... that's the basic problem. 00:01:33.54\00:01:36.76 We need sugar but when you have TOO much sugar, 00:01:36.79\00:01:39.69 it causes a lot of problems. 00:01:39.72\00:01:41.57 There are 2 basic types of diabetes. 00:01:41.60\00:01:45.24 You see, in order to get the sugar inside the cells, 00:01:45.27\00:01:48.75 you need insulin. 00:01:48.78\00:01:50.60 So in type 1 diabetes, these individuals usually 00:01:50.63\00:01:54.90 young individuals, completely lose their ability 00:01:54.93\00:01:58.46 to make insulin. 00:01:58.49\00:02:00.21 In other words, that organ in the body, the pancreas 00:02:00.24\00:02:03.42 that makes the insulin, is completely knocked out, 00:02:03.45\00:02:06.63 and they're not able to make ANY insulin. 00:02:06.66\00:02:08.66 So that's type 1... That's type 1 00:02:08.69\00:02:11.13 But that's a minority of the individuals with diabetes, 00:02:11.16\00:02:15.16 only about 5% of those with diabetes have type 1 diabetes. 00:02:15.19\00:02:19.71 Over 90-95% have type 2 diabetes. 00:02:19.74\00:02:24.97 Now, it has typically been called 00:02:25.00\00:02:27.47 adult-onset diabetes in the past, 00:02:27.50\00:02:30.09 but now we see type 2 diabetes showing up in younger, 00:02:30.12\00:02:34.46 and younger individuals, even in elementary school. 00:02:34.49\00:02:37.38 Is that right... do you see see people that young 00:02:37.41\00:02:38.96 at the Lifestyle Center? 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.36 Not usually... usually people come to us when they're 00:02:40.39\00:02:44.08 starting to have side effects, 00:02:44.11\00:02:46.71 problems and real serious situations. 00:02:46.74\00:02:49.83 But in type 2 diabetes, the people have insulin, 00:02:49.86\00:02:54.28 they're making insulin, but the body is not responding to it. 00:02:54.31\00:02:58.98 In other words, they have insulin right there 00:02:59.01\00:03:01.70 where they need it, but the cells are just not 00:03:01.73\00:03:04.24 responding to it like they should. 00:03:04.27\00:03:05.92 So here we have, your blood vessel, as that blood is 00:03:05.95\00:03:09.96 going through the blood vessel; it's carrying insulin, 00:03:09.99\00:03:14.01 or the insulin carrying along whatever is needed 00:03:14.04\00:03:16.70 to get into the cell, but it can't get in. 00:03:16.73\00:03:18.49 Is that what you're saying? That's right 00:03:18.52\00:03:19.89 There's plenty of sugar, there's plenty of insulin, 00:03:19.92\00:03:23.03 but it's just not getting into the cell. 00:03:23.06\00:03:25.20 The cells are not responding to that insulin. 00:03:25.23\00:03:28.69 Do those that are... I assume that there at the 00:03:28.72\00:03:32.30 Lifestyle Center of America, you are saying... 00:03:32.33\00:03:35.23 Look, for these types of individuals that are diabetics, 00:03:35.26\00:03:38.33 they need to get back to simple foods as grown; 00:03:38.36\00:03:41.45 that, you know, are released slower into the bloodstream 00:03:41.48\00:03:45.11 and whatnot, and this helps their diabetes, is that right? 00:03:45.14\00:03:47.83 You talk about the vegetarian diet. Absolutely! 00:03:47.86\00:03:51.37 You know, the genius of the vegetarian diet is that 00:03:51.40\00:03:56.35 the plant foods, as they come from nature, are full of fiber; 00:03:56.38\00:04:01.60 they're full of water and they are relatively LOW in calories, 00:04:01.63\00:04:05.99 especially the beans, the vegetables, the salad items, 00:04:06.02\00:04:10.50 the grains... and when you eat these foods, 00:04:10.53\00:04:13.61 you can actually FILL UP and feel SATISFIED 00:04:13.64\00:04:17.19 without getting too many calories... 00:04:17.22\00:04:19.45 The part of the problem in diabetes is that we get 00:04:19.48\00:04:23.01 too many calories coming in to the body, 00:04:23.04\00:04:25.27 and the cells start to fill up with this energy, 00:04:25.30\00:04:29.63 in the form of fat, typically, 00:04:29.66\00:04:31.32 and the MORE of the energy that comes into the cells, 00:04:31.35\00:04:34.72 the less the cell can bring in that energy. 00:04:34.75\00:04:37.62 In other words, it starts to 00:04:37.65\00:04:39.02 DECREASE its response to the insulin. 00:04:39.05\00:04:41.72 But, as you start to take on a diet where you're not 00:04:41.75\00:04:44.92 taking in so many calories, a plant-based diet, 00:04:44.95\00:04:47.82 you're actually starting to LOSE weight, 00:04:47.85\00:04:50.88 the energy starts to DECREASE out of the storage compartments, 00:04:50.91\00:04:54.99 ...so to speak, and the cells wake up and they start to 00:04:55.02\00:04:58.33 respond to that insulin and the blood sugar goes down. 00:04:58.36\00:05:01.72 Do vegetarians ever develop diabetes? 00:05:01.75\00:05:05.36 Well this is an interesting idea because we would THINK 00:05:05.39\00:05:10.22 that if you're going to be a vegetarian, 00:05:10.25\00:05:12.23 you wouldn't have any problem with diabetes, 00:05:12.26\00:05:13.98 but in fact, when I was practicing in Iowa, 00:05:14.01\00:05:16.51 for a period of 3 years, I would see a number of 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.61 different people who were vegetarians, 00:05:19.64\00:05:21.73 and they still had problems with their blood sugar. 00:05:21.76\00:05:25.39 We can still be on a RICH diet and be a vegetarian. 00:05:25.42\00:05:30.86 Like what? Well, what I mean by that is... 00:05:30.89\00:05:33.04 When we eat foods that are highly processed, 00:05:33.07\00:05:36.31 highly refined, concentrated energy sources... 00:05:36.34\00:05:40.08 For example... Fake steak, phony baloney? 00:05:40.11\00:05:43.11 Well, you know, if you go into a grocery store, 00:05:43.14\00:05:46.34 and you look at the packages, 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.29 a lot of these packages contain things like corn syrup, 00:05:48.32\00:05:53.31 partially hydrogenated oils, enriched wheat flour... 00:05:53.34\00:05:56.96 These are all foods that are plant in origin, 00:05:56.99\00:06:00.60 they're vegetarian, but the FIBER has been removed! 00:06:00.63\00:06:04.07 Okay, so they're refined. 00:06:04.10\00:06:05.47 And the water has been removed, and so they're concentrated. 00:06:05.50\00:06:08.73 And they bring in more energy into the body 00:06:08.76\00:06:11.47 than was what necessary, 00:06:11.50\00:06:13.87 and so the weight starts to go up. 00:06:13.90\00:06:16.16 And then diabetes can show up later on. 00:06:16.19\00:06:19.21 What about tofu, is it a processed food? 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.34 Tofu is a processed food. 00:06:21.37\00:06:23.47 And again, I'm not saying never eat tofu, 00:06:23.50\00:06:26.06 but I'm saying we need to be careful if our weight 00:06:26.09\00:06:28.95 is starting to creep up, we might want to consider 00:06:28.98\00:06:33.08 using foods in more unrefined and unprocessed state. 00:06:33.11\00:06:37.33 Even if we're vegetarians... even if we're vegetarians 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.65 In diabetes then, as I understand it, 00:06:40.68\00:06:42.49 the sugar goes up either because there's 00:06:42.52\00:06:44.36 insulin resistance or because there is not any 00:06:44.39\00:06:46.93 insulin made - like you said... That's right 00:06:46.96\00:06:48.61 And what's the problem with the sugar going up? 00:06:48.65\00:06:50.27 I mean, you know, what's the problem with 00:06:50.30\00:06:51.80 having a little more sugar around? 00:06:51.83\00:06:53.20 Well, one of the issues is that as your sugar beings to rise, 00:06:53.23\00:06:58.47 it doesn't just stay there by itself... 00:06:58.50\00:07:01.06 It begins to attach to other things in the blood, 00:07:01.09\00:07:05.56 and one of the major constituents 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.83 of the blood are PROTEINS... 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.68 And the major protein in the blood is albumin, 00:07:09.71\00:07:14.86 that's one of them... 00:07:14.89\00:07:16.26 Another major protein in the blood is HEMOGLOBIN. 00:07:16.29\00:07:19.39 And hemoglobin is the protein, of course, that's 00:07:19.42\00:07:21.61 carrying the oxygen out to the tissues, 00:07:21.64\00:07:24.10 and it's very interesting that EVERYONE has a certain amount 00:07:24.13\00:07:29.02 of their hemoglobin protein that's attached to sugar... 00:07:29.05\00:07:32.83 About 3 to 5% of our hemoglobin is attached to a sugar. 00:07:32.86\00:07:37.96 Now, there's a problem when sugar attaches to hemoglobin. 00:07:37.99\00:07:43.03 What does it do to it? 00:07:43.06\00:07:44.43 Well actually, you can think of hemoglobin like a donut, 00:07:44.46\00:07:47.24 or some have said, like a bagel... 00:07:47.27\00:07:50.40 Don't want the sugar to go up. 00:07:50.43\00:07:51.80 So, we have this hemoglobin, it's like a bagel... 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.85 Well, hemoglobin actually attaches to oxygen very strongly 00:07:54.88\00:08:02.18 Now the Creator has designed a chemical called "DPG" 00:08:02.21\00:08:08.73 DPG - diphosphoglycerate... 00:08:08.76\00:08:11.33 Kind of a complicated name but all it IS... is a substance 00:08:11.36\00:08:14.66 that fits inside that bagel and it's very important 00:08:14.69\00:08:18.99 because if it's not inside the middle of your hemoglobin 00:08:19.02\00:08:22.14 hemoglobin attaches to oxygen 20 times stronger 00:08:22.17\00:08:26.40 when it's NOT there! Okay 00:08:26.43\00:08:29.93 So its purpose is to fit in that hole 00:08:29.96\00:08:32.85 so oxygen is released much more easily. 00:08:32.88\00:08:36.38 So we need to get the oxygen off out into the tissues 00:08:36.41\00:08:39.38 but we need DPG in there to allow that process to happen. 00:08:39.41\00:08:44.02 So the sugar doesn't allow it to be in there or something? 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.08 What happens is, the sugar replaces the DPG, 00:08:46.11\00:08:49.53 and so the hemoglobin holds on to the oxygen more strongly, 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.83 and it doesn't get out to the tissues. 00:08:53.86\00:08:55.52 So in other words, diabetics usually... 00:08:55.55\00:08:57.16 they'll develop problems where are little tiny vessels. 00:08:57.19\00:09:00.20 Is that right... like in their eyes or outlying areas? 00:09:00.23\00:09:03.97 That's right, the most delicate fragile tissues... 00:09:04.00\00:09:07.06 you start to see signs first. 00:09:07.09\00:09:09.65 The retina of the eye, the very back of the eye, 00:09:09.68\00:09:12.01 very delicate tissue, small blood vessels. 00:09:12.04\00:09:15.33 And as more and more of the hemoglobin is tied up with sugar 00:09:15.36\00:09:18.99 you get less and less oxygen to these tissues, 00:09:19.02\00:09:22.33 and that's ONE of the reasons. 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.44 Now, one of the other proteins is albumin. 00:09:24.47\00:09:28.32 And, that's a MAJOR blood protein 00:09:28.35\00:09:31.01 that could be tied up with sugar. 00:09:31.04\00:09:32.54 So, as we see the hemoglobin attaching to sugar, 00:09:32.57\00:09:37.61 it begins to create more and more of a problem, 00:09:37.64\00:09:40.88 and that's why we measure something called hemoglobin A1c 00:09:40.91\00:09:46.00 That's the 3-month test that tells you what your 00:09:46.03\00:09:49.53 blood sugar has been over the last 2 or 3 months. 00:09:49.56\00:09:52.50 And all that is, is measuring how much of your hemoglobin 00:09:52.53\00:09:55.31 is attached to sugar... 00:09:55.34\00:09:57.45 And you want to get that down to about less than 6; 00:09:57.48\00:10:01.63 that would be the best. 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.03 So at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:10:03.06\00:10:04.47 you take diabetics that have a problem, 00:10:04.50\00:10:07.39 and what do you see happening to 00:10:07.42\00:10:08.96 their hemoglobin A1c and these other things? 00:10:08.99\00:10:12.20 In the 19-day program, for instance, what happens to them? 00:10:12.24\00:10:16.35 Do they come there and they see this reverse? 00:10:16.38\00:10:18.48 Is it reversible? 00:10:18.52\00:10:19.89 Actually, diabetes type 2 is a very exciting 00:10:19.92\00:10:25.20 disease to treat because it IS reversible... 00:10:25.23\00:10:28.11 And we see, all the time, individuals 00:10:28.14\00:10:30.88 come to the Lifestyle Center... 00:10:30.91\00:10:32.28 For example, I have 2 patients right now; 00:10:32.31\00:10:34.34 one individual came in on 100 units of insulin; 00:10:34.37\00:10:39.14 another individual came on 2 different oral medicines, 00:10:39.17\00:10:42.75 you know, medicines you take by mouth, for their diabetes. 00:10:42.78\00:10:45.93 Their diabetes was not in good control when they came in. 00:10:45.96\00:10:48.96 In other words, their sugars were real high... 00:10:48.99\00:10:50.36 They weren't optimal. Okay 00:10:50.39\00:10:52.89 Now one individual was better than the other, 00:10:52.92\00:10:55.34 but as they got onto a plant-based diet, 00:10:55.37\00:10:58.83 an exercise program and an entire lifestyle approach, 00:10:58.86\00:11:03.74 what we're seeing is that both of these individuals 00:11:03.77\00:11:07.18 are completely off of their medications 00:11:07.21\00:11:09.23 and yet their sugars are running very close to the normal range! 00:11:09.26\00:11:14.49 And so, the potential there is for individuals 00:11:14.52\00:11:18.47 who have been on a lot of medications to actually 00:11:18.50\00:11:21.26 be able to REDUCE their medications, 00:11:21.29\00:11:22.83 and some individuals actually come off their medications. 00:11:22.86\00:11:25.52 But it requires a lifestyle approach 00:11:25.55\00:11:29.12 in order to facilitate that. 00:11:29.15\00:11:30.52 So what I hear you saying is that sugar, 00:11:30.55\00:11:32.75 I mean, lots of times when I 00:11:32.78\00:11:34.51 would take care of people that had diabetes... 00:11:34.54\00:11:36.10 They'd say, "Look, my doctor tells me I have sugar" 00:11:36.14\00:11:39.11 And they CALL IT exactly THAT, 00:11:39.14\00:11:41.56 and in my mind I used to think "What is that stuff like... 00:11:41.59\00:11:44.10 is that like white stuff that we talk about being sugar, 00:11:44.13\00:11:46.79 or the brown sugar... what is that?" 00:11:46.82\00:11:48.21 "What exactly is happening there?" 00:11:48.24\00:11:49.78 But what I hear you saying is that sugar, itself, 00:11:49.81\00:11:52.46 is not BAD in a sense of in the body; 00:11:52.49\00:11:55.61 it's just bad if it stays too long in the bloodstream 00:11:55.64\00:11:58.59 and it doesn't get into the cells... 00:11:58.62\00:12:00.20 Am I right about that? 00:12:00.23\00:12:01.60 Tell me a little bit about sugar. 00:12:01.63\00:12:03.00 Is it good? Is it bad? 00:12:03.03\00:12:04.63 I know where it should be. 00:12:04.66\00:12:06.16 Or where it should not be, from what you've told me, 00:12:06.19\00:12:09.34 and that's not in the bloodstream for too long. 00:12:09.37\00:12:11.63 ABSOLUTELY! 00:12:11.66\00:12:13.11 Sugar is essential; in fact, our brain ONLY uses sugar, 00:12:13.14\00:12:18.51 so that's a VERY important fuel. How sweet it is! 00:12:18.54\00:12:22.55 The problem is that the Creator designed the system 00:12:22.58\00:12:25.89 so that the sugar stays between a lower range and a higher range 00:12:25.92\00:12:31.41 ...And it doesn't get below that range or above that range. 00:12:31.44\00:12:35.04 So, like the oil in your car... Yeah, exactly 00:12:35.07\00:12:37.90 And so in diabetes, the sugar levels start to rise, 00:12:37.93\00:12:41.59 and they are at a level that's too high, 00:12:41.62\00:12:44.65 and so that starts to cause all of these other problems. 00:12:44.68\00:12:47.39 Now, we know that the sugar levels can actually damage 00:12:47.42\00:12:50.80 the lining of the arteries and actually promote heart disease. 00:12:50.83\00:12:54.35 Well, how do you get the sugar then... into the cells? 00:12:54.38\00:12:56.23 Well, what it actually takes and what is important 00:12:56.26\00:13:00.42 to understand is that ALL of the cells make these 00:13:00.45\00:13:04.27 little doorways for the blood sugar to pass into the cell, 00:13:04.30\00:13:09.11 and there are 2 tissues that we want to focus on in diabetes, 00:13:09.14\00:13:13.33 and that is the MUSCLE tissue and the FAT tissue. 00:13:13.36\00:13:16.38 They make these little proteins that are doors for sugar. 00:13:16.41\00:13:21.27 And in diabetes, what happens is 00:13:21.30\00:13:24.15 the insulin is made by the pancreas, in type 2 diabetes, 00:13:24.18\00:13:29.29 and the insulin comes along to the cell 00:13:29.32\00:13:31.40 and it SIGNALS the cell to bring those doors up to the surface. 00:13:31.43\00:13:36.63 So it knocks on and it says, "Open up" Right 00:13:36.66\00:13:39.38 And in a person without diabetes the cell responds to that signal 00:13:39.41\00:13:46.76 The doorways go up to the surface and the sugar goes in. 00:13:46.79\00:13:50.11 See, when those doors are on the surface of the cell, 00:13:50.14\00:13:53.33 the sugar goes in automatically. 00:13:53.36\00:13:55.49 If they're there, the sugar goes in. 00:13:55.52\00:13:58.44 So the problem is, in diabetes, that the signal is sent, 00:13:58.47\00:14:01.95 ...the insulin is sent and it tells the cell 00:14:01.98\00:14:05.66 BRING the doors up and they don't come up. 00:14:05.69\00:14:08.96 But, as you start to REDUCE the ENERGY that is 00:14:08.99\00:14:13.70 stored in those cells... in other words, the excess fat 00:14:13.73\00:14:16.22 through an exercise program, through a plant-based diet, 00:14:16.25\00:14:20.18 the cell starts to respond 00:14:20.21\00:14:22.42 and it sends those doors up to the surface. 00:14:22.45\00:14:24.73 You are a Christian physician, 00:14:24.76\00:14:26.71 and that means that you believe in the Lord, 00:14:26.74\00:14:29.52 you believe in Christ and you give Him 00:14:29.55\00:14:31.27 the glory for what you do... 00:14:31.30\00:14:32.67 And out of all the books you've studied, if you could recommend 00:14:32.70\00:14:37.19 a textbook concerning diabetes, what would it be and why? 00:14:37.22\00:14:40.15 You know, the BEST health text book is the Scriptures. 00:14:40.18\00:14:44.14 The Holy Bible is the VERY BEST... 00:14:44.17\00:14:46.57 In fact, I would say it's the 00:14:46.60\00:14:48.17 ONLY health textbook that you really need. 00:14:48.20\00:14:51.10 So what does it say about diabetes? 00:14:51.13\00:14:53.18 Well, you know, actually it doesn't 00:14:53.21\00:14:56.06 say anything specifically about diabetes per se... 00:14:56.09\00:14:59.39 but if you will FOLLOW the guidelines in the Bible 00:14:59.42\00:15:03.40 and you don't have to read very far... 00:15:03.43\00:15:05.68 The very first chapter in the 29th verse 00:15:05.71\00:15:09.93 tells you the diet, the BEST diet for someone with diabetes. 00:15:09.96\00:15:15.86 Fruits, whole grains, and nuts. 00:15:15.89\00:15:18.93 Now, we want to talk a little bit later about what kind of 00:15:18.96\00:15:22.30 fruits and how many for the person with diabetes. 00:15:22.33\00:15:25.73 But WHOLE grains and NUTS and VEGETABLES, 00:15:25.76\00:15:29.54 which were added in the second chapter, 00:15:29.57\00:15:32.03 are the IDEAL diet for someone who wants 00:15:32.06\00:15:35.29 to improve their diabetes. 00:15:35.32\00:15:37.11 Fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables, 00:15:37.14\00:15:39.12 and that's why you're saying this is the best textbook 00:15:39.15\00:15:41.20 because it gives the plan that... 00:15:41.23\00:15:43.01 Is this the plan that you use at the Lifestyle Center of America? 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.39 Absolutely. 00:15:45.42\00:15:46.79 Now in the third chapter, verse 19 of Genesis, 00:15:46.82\00:15:49.92 it tells us there what kind of an activity program 00:15:49.95\00:15:54.06 that we were designed for. 00:15:54.09\00:15:55.46 It says, "In the sweat of your face, shall you eat bread 00:15:55.49\00:15:58.80 all the days of your life. " 00:15:58.83\00:16:00.96 So you need to get out there and exercise. 00:16:00.99\00:16:03.40 In other words, we need an exercise level that 00:16:03.43\00:16:06.19 causes us to sweat. 00:16:06.22\00:16:08.05 That's the kind of exercise that will actually 00:16:08.08\00:16:11.28 REDUCE the fat that's stored in your muscle. 00:16:11.31\00:16:14.28 Reduce the fat that's stored in your liver, 00:16:14.31\00:16:16.60 and as these tissues LOSE fat, 00:16:16.63\00:16:19.11 they become better able to 00:16:19.14\00:16:20.61 absorb sugar out of the bloodstream 00:16:20.64\00:16:22.78 and your blood sugar drops. 00:16:22.81\00:16:24.27 We're talking with Dr. Tim Arnott 00:16:24.30\00:16:26.24 We're talking about diabetes. 00:16:26.27\00:16:27.64 We've learned what it is. 00:16:27.67\00:16:29.13 We've learned the type of problems that it causes. 00:16:29.16\00:16:32.47 We learned that lots of people 00:16:32.50\00:16:33.99 are suffering from these problems... 00:16:34.02\00:16:35.73 And when we come back, we're going to talk more 00:16:35.76\00:16:37.95 about the way to deal with diabetes... 00:16:37.98\00:16:40.56 We're going to talk about how to apply some of the 00:16:40.59\00:16:43.32 principles we've already learned from the most important 00:16:43.35\00:16:45.78 textbook... that being the Scriptures. 00:16:45.81\00:16:47.63 Join us when we come back. 00:16:47.66\00:16:49.88 Have you found yourself wishing 00:16:51.22\00:16:52.59 that you could shed a few pounds? 00:16:52.62\00:16:54.15 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.43 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:16:56.46\00:16:59.67 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:16:59.70\00:17:02.31 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:17:02.34\00:17:05.53 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:17:05.56\00:17:08.09 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:17:08.12\00:17:10.25 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:17:10.28\00:17:12.56 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:17:12.59\00:17:15.14 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:17:15.17\00:17:17.95 by thousands who are able to eat more and lose weight 00:17:17.98\00:17:21.08 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:17:21.11\00:17:24.05 through lifestyle medicine. 00:17:24.08\00:17:25.63 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:17:25.66\00:17:29.45 and in this booklet, they present a sensible approach 00:17:29.48\00:17:32.09 to eating, nutrition and lifestyle changes that can 00:17:32.12\00:17:35.25 help you prevent heart disease, diabetes and EVEN cancer! 00:17:35.28\00:17:38.70 Call or write today for your free copy of... 00:17:38.73\00:17:40.69 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:17:40.72\00:17:42.49 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:17:42.52\00:17:45.78 It's ABSOLUTELY free of charge, so call or write today. 00:17:45.81\00:17:50.94 We've been talking with Dr. Tim Arnott from the 00:17:52.50\00:17:54.79 Lifestyle Center of America 00:17:54.82\00:17:56.19 We've been talking about diabetes, 00:17:56.22\00:17:57.59 and it's been exciting to learn that diabetes is not something 00:17:57.62\00:17:59.97 you just have to live with, especially type 2 diabetes... 00:18:00.00\00:18:03.01 Isn't that right doctor? Absolutely! 00:18:03.04\00:18:05.05 It can be stopped, reversed, 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.80 and simply, you were explaining that this can come 00:18:07.83\00:18:11.13 as a result of just opening our Bibles and following the 00:18:11.16\00:18:14.21 prescription that is given in the first 3 chapters of Genesis 00:18:14.25\00:18:17.09 Is that right? That's correct! 00:18:17.12\00:18:18.49 Fruits, nuts, grains and then you said vegetables. 00:18:18.52\00:18:21.36 I have a question for you... 00:18:21.39\00:18:22.76 What is the connection between weight... 00:18:22.79\00:18:25.65 You know, you say, "Well you're overweight, 00:18:25.68\00:18:27.37 so you're going to have diabetes" 00:18:27.40\00:18:28.82 What's the connection between weight and diabetes? 00:18:28.85\00:18:30.93 And how could the Creator's plan help us in this area? 00:18:30.96\00:18:34.95 Well, you know, as we were talking earlier, 00:18:34.98\00:18:37.09 what seems to actually be happening is as we are on a 00:18:37.12\00:18:41.13 diet that's bringing in too many calories, 00:18:41.16\00:18:43.70 those EXTRA calories are stored as fat in the different tissues. 00:18:43.73\00:18:48.86 They're stored in the muscle tissues... 00:18:48.89\00:18:50.78 They're actually stored between the muscle cells. 00:18:50.81\00:18:53.50 The extra fat is stored INSIDE the muscle cells. 00:18:53.53\00:18:56.81 In the liver, you can develop a fatty liver. 00:18:56.84\00:18:59.56 So this excess fat is deposited in all the different tissues, 00:18:59.59\00:19:03.42 and there seems to be a situation developing that when 00:19:03.45\00:19:06.51 all of the storage areas start to fill up. 00:19:06.54\00:19:10.55 The body basically seems to be saying, 00:19:10.58\00:19:14.01 "Look, I'm full, I can't take in anymore energy" 00:19:14.04\00:19:17.61 And it starts to turn down the insulin sensitivity. 00:19:17.64\00:19:22.09 So when you get overweight, then it sends a signal 00:19:22.12\00:19:26.10 to the insulin and the insulin 00:19:26.13\00:19:28.68 isn't as sensitive or what happens? 00:19:28.71\00:19:30.37 The cells just seem to be turning off 00:19:30.40\00:19:33.17 their ability to respond to insulin. 00:19:33.20\00:19:36.23 The more the weight actually comes on to the body. 00:19:36.26\00:19:40.08 But the good news is is that as you LOSE weight, 00:19:40.12\00:19:43.90 as you deplete these tissues, 00:19:43.93\00:19:46.60 as you reduce the fats stored in these different tissues, 00:19:46.63\00:19:49.08 then the insulin starts to work again. 00:19:49.11\00:19:51.60 Turns the switch back on, says, "We need your help" 00:19:51.63\00:19:55.27 Now what's exciting about the Creator's program... 00:19:55.30\00:19:59.34 Fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables... 00:19:59.37\00:20:01.10 That's what you're talking about... Exactly! 00:20:01.13\00:20:02.61 The ideal diet, the plant-based diet is the diet that you can 00:20:02.64\00:20:08.32 actually live with for the long haul. 00:20:08.35\00:20:11.86 There are many programs out there... 00:20:11.89\00:20:13.57 Successful programs to help people lose weight. 00:20:13.60\00:20:16.01 I mean, one VERY successful program is a HIGH PROTEIN DIET. 00:20:16.04\00:20:20.69 People lose weight on a high protein diet. 00:20:20.72\00:20:24.56 People lose weight a whole range of 00:20:24.59\00:20:27.54 different programs out there for weight control. 00:20:27.57\00:20:31.06 Even amputation probably, 00:20:31.09\00:20:32.71 but that's probably not a good idea... right 00:20:32.74\00:20:35.19 The problem with these is that you can't LIVE with them FOREVER 00:20:35.22\00:20:38.93 That's for sure... Because they have all kinds of 00:20:38.96\00:20:40.80 side effects and problems associated with them. 00:20:40.83\00:20:43.94 I was just driving down the road the other day, 00:20:43.97\00:20:45.36 and I saw this big billboard that said, 00:20:45.39\00:20:49.95 "Are you trying to live on a low carbohydrate diet, 00:20:49.98\00:20:52.83 here's a bread for you that can make this more easy" 00:20:52.86\00:20:55.22 I mean, it's true, people are not making it. 00:20:55.25\00:20:57.36 Evidently there is billboards up! Absolutely! 00:20:57.39\00:20:59.83 So what's exciting and what is so FUN to take care of 00:20:59.86\00:21:04.74 individuals with diabetes is to have this program 00:21:04.77\00:21:08.10 the Creator offers that actually brings satiety. 00:21:08.13\00:21:11.41 I mean, actually feel FULL maybe for the first time. 00:21:11.44\00:21:14.60 Because they're getting foods that are high in bulk; 00:21:14.63\00:21:17.03 they're high in water, they're high in fiber. 00:21:17.06\00:21:19.47 The PLANTS were made to fill us up 00:21:19.50\00:21:22.22 without filling us full of calories. 00:21:22.25\00:21:24.77 And so, we can actually feel satisfied, 00:21:24.80\00:21:26.75 and lose weight at the same time. 00:21:26.78\00:21:28.34 That's what every person with diabetes... 00:21:28.37\00:21:30.23 And that's probably what you see there at the 00:21:30.26\00:21:31.63 Lifestyle Center of America 00:21:31.66\00:21:33.03 Is this what happens as you teach them to cook 00:21:33.06\00:21:35.58 and as they're eating there with you, 00:21:35.61\00:21:38.11 do they say these kind of things? 00:21:38.14\00:21:39.84 They feel full; they feel good? Absolutely! 00:21:39.87\00:21:42.13 People are astounded that they're eating, 00:21:42.16\00:21:44.81 and they thought they would be starving, 00:21:44.84\00:21:47.67 and they're feeling completely satisfied... 00:21:47.70\00:21:49.60 And they're losing weight at the same time. 00:21:49.63\00:21:51.94 Now, how important is it, where should your blood sugar be, 00:21:51.97\00:21:55.66 and I've heard people talk about 00:21:55.69\00:21:58.05 having it tightly controlled, or other people say... 00:21:58.09\00:22:02.57 "I'm a brittle diabetic" What's that all about? 00:22:02.60\00:22:03.97 We know there are 2 numbers that you want to remember... 00:22:04.00\00:22:07.56 If you want to have tight blood sugar control, 00:22:07.59\00:22:10.82 then you want to remember 2 numbers... 00:22:10.85\00:22:12.46 Now why is it important to have tight blood sugar control? 00:22:12.49\00:22:16.30 Well now we know that if your blood sugar is out of control, 00:22:16.33\00:22:20.39 in other words, if it's not tightly controlled, 00:22:20.42\00:22:23.08 you start to have much more problems with blindness, 00:22:23.11\00:22:27.59 for example, the disease of the eye called "retinopathy" 00:22:27.62\00:22:31.37 ...Injury to the kidneys, the nephropathy. 00:22:31.40\00:22:34.48 So all the little tiny vessels again. 00:22:34.51\00:22:36.36 That's right, all these different tissues 00:22:36.39\00:22:38.69 start to suffer as the blood sugar goes up. 00:22:38.72\00:22:42.05 So that's why tight control is very important. 00:22:42.08\00:22:44.86 So what are those 2 numbers we need to know? 00:22:44.89\00:22:46.68 Before every meal, your blood sugar should be LESS than 120. 00:22:46.71\00:22:52.19 BEFORE every meal... 00:22:52.22\00:22:53.59 Before ANY meal that you eat, it should be less than 120. 00:22:53.62\00:22:57.01 What about after? Two hours after you 00:22:57.04\00:23:00.11 stand up from that meal, any meal, it should be less than 140 00:23:00.14\00:23:03.85 So those are the 2 numbers that you want to remember. 00:23:05.02\00:23:07.65 Less than 120 before any meal; 00:23:07.68\00:23:09.93 less than 140 2 hours later. 00:23:09.96\00:23:11.99 So what if it's not happening, 00:23:12.02\00:23:13.39 what foods should you eat to bring it into tight control? 00:23:13.42\00:23:15.91 Well, the FIRST thing you want to do is to get on a 00:23:15.94\00:23:19.01 plant-based diet. 00:23:19.04\00:23:20.82 Because this diet is the LOWEST in saturated fat. 00:23:20.85\00:23:25.29 That's that fat that at room temperature is solid, 00:23:25.32\00:23:28.71 and that fat is particularly bad for someone with diabetes. 00:23:28.74\00:23:33.20 Just makes the condition much worse. 00:23:33.23\00:23:35.47 So a plant-based diet has the LEAST amount of that kind of fat 00:23:35.50\00:23:40.51 So, that's the first step, get on a plant-based diet. 00:23:40.54\00:23:43.89 Now the next thing you want to do is... you want to get 00:23:43.92\00:23:46.34 on a FIBER-RICH diet. 00:23:46.37\00:23:48.63 Okay, so these are the ones that can really help you 00:23:48.66\00:23:51.05 keep it tight... FIBER-RICH, 00:23:51.08\00:23:53.13 and what do you mean by fiber-rich? 00:23:53.16\00:23:54.53 Well, what I'm saying is... 00:23:54.56\00:23:55.99 You know, there's only really one source of removing fiber 00:23:56.02\00:24:00.59 in our society that I can think of... that's the food industry! 00:24:00.62\00:24:05.13 So you want to get your food 00:24:05.16\00:24:06.54 before it goes to the food industry, 00:24:06.57\00:24:08.85 because they're the ones removing the fiber. 00:24:08.88\00:24:12.12 So you want to use WHOLE grains! Okay, whole grains. 00:24:12.15\00:24:14.95 You want to go to the bulk food section of your grocery store 00:24:14.99\00:24:16.93 Buy those whole grains and use all the different grains 00:24:18.23\00:24:21.72 that are out there... 12- 15 different grains 00:24:21.75\00:24:24.40 to bring a lot of variety. 00:24:24.43\00:24:26.18 The BEANS are the RICHEST in fiber. 00:24:26.21\00:24:29.95 In fact, someone with type 2 diabetes, beans and whole grains 00:24:29.98\00:24:33.92 are probably the very BEST 00:24:33.95\00:24:35.33 entree for keeping the blood sugar low. 00:24:35.36\00:24:37.41 Why is it then that some vegetarians have 00:24:37.44\00:24:39.67 problems controlling their sugar? 00:24:39.70\00:24:42.21 Well you know, there are certain foods that somebody with 00:24:42.24\00:24:45.85 type 2 diabetes has to be very careful with. Like what? 00:24:45.88\00:24:49.04 Well, for example, if you sit down to breakfast, 00:24:49.07\00:24:54.57 and you break open the cantaloupe or different melons, 00:24:54.60\00:25:00.24 those melons, for some reason, probably because they are 00:25:00.27\00:25:06.29 lower in fiber than some of the other foods such as apples, 00:25:06.32\00:25:09.78 will RAISE the sugar through the roof. Is that right? 00:25:09.81\00:25:13.06 So, cantaloupes... what about strawberries? 00:25:13.09\00:25:14.95 Strawberries are much better. 00:25:14.98\00:25:16.91 What about blueberries? 00:25:16.95\00:25:18.32 You know, the best foods in the fruit category 00:25:18.35\00:25:21.48 for some with diabetes, are what we call the northern fruits 00:25:21.51\00:25:25.12 - that grow up in Michigan and Washington... 00:25:25.15\00:25:27.38 the apples, peaches, pears, all the fruits with pits, cherries. 00:25:27.41\00:25:35.26 Tomatoes? Some people say they are fruit. 00:25:35.29\00:25:36.66 Actually, tomatoes are not the best for some with diabetes. 00:25:36.69\00:25:40.43 I'm not saying NEVER eat them. 00:25:40.46\00:25:42.21 So apples, pears, peaches... And the fruits with pits. 00:25:42.24\00:25:48.73 The plums, the peaches, the cherries. 00:25:48.76\00:25:52.44 And the others, it doesn't mean you can't ever have them, 00:25:52.47\00:25:53.84 but you have to be very careful. 00:25:53.87\00:25:55.24 You have to be very careful. 00:25:55.27\00:25:56.64 And again, you want to have your goals... 00:25:56.67\00:25:58.46 Your blood sugar goals and so you want to be testing 00:25:58.49\00:26:01.46 your blood sugar and know where you are. 00:26:01.49\00:26:04.27 And if you're not meeting your goals, 00:26:04.30\00:26:05.67 then you might want to use FEWER of the 00:26:05.70\00:26:07.62 melons and more of the apples. 00:26:07.65\00:26:09.88 We've got about 1-1/2 minutes left and I want to ask you 00:26:09.91\00:26:12.92 this question because you are a Christian physician, 00:26:12.95\00:26:14.64 and you refer to the most healing book that I know of 00:26:14.67\00:26:17.45 and we both agree on this... This being the Bible. 00:26:17.48\00:26:19.92 Why would a Christian especially benefit from 00:26:19.95\00:26:24.07 tight blood sugar control? 00:26:24.10\00:26:26.38 Well, of course, there are a number of benefits 00:26:26.41\00:26:29.04 to tight blood sugar control. 00:26:29.07\00:26:30.86 For example, if you're not getting the sugar into the cell, 00:26:30.89\00:26:35.91 you're not FEEDING those cells. 00:26:35.94\00:26:37.95 And so, for example, the brain 00:26:37.98\00:26:39.91 isn't going to be fed properly as well. 00:26:39.94\00:26:42.13 But you know, one of the most important complications 00:26:42.16\00:26:45.19 of diabetes is heart disease. 00:26:45.22\00:26:48.15 In fact, over HALF of the individuals, 00:26:48.18\00:26:51.66 when they are first diagnosed 00:26:51.69\00:26:53.75 with diabetes ALREADY HAVE coronary heart disease. 00:26:53.78\00:26:58.57 In other words, they already have blockages in their arteries 00:26:58.60\00:27:01.28 and what we know now is that if you want to have 00:27:01.31\00:27:06.07 TOTAL HEALTH, THE VERY BEST HEALTH, 00:27:06.10\00:27:08.50 you'll want to have the VERY BEST CIRCULATION 00:27:08.53\00:27:12.15 OF THE BLOOD THROUGH YOUR ARTERIES. 00:27:12.18\00:27:13.94 So, in order to protect yourself from further blockages of 00:27:13.97\00:27:20.02 your arteries, you want to get 00:27:20.05\00:27:21.42 that blood sugar down as low as possible. 00:27:21.45\00:27:23.43 So not only can it help your heart, 00:27:23.46\00:27:25.72 but it can also help your head, 00:27:25.75\00:27:27.99 and it can keep your mind clear, 00:27:28.02\00:27:30.20 especially if you're a Christian, I guess anybody, 00:27:30.23\00:27:33.16 but we want Christians to especially have clear minds 00:27:33.19\00:27:36.73 as they are witnessing for the Lord. 00:27:36.76\00:27:38.68 We've been talking with Dr. Tim Arnott 00:27:38.71\00:27:40.50 We've been talking about diabetes. 00:27:40.53\00:27:42.22 We hope that you've learned some very helpful things, 00:27:42.25\00:27:44.90 I certainly have! 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.35 And we hope you've taken some notes 00:27:46.38\00:27:48.70 or contact 3ABN for more information. 00:27:48.73\00:27:50.10 Thanks for joining us, and we hope that you have 00:27:50.13\00:27:52.10 Health that Lasts for a Lifetime! 00:27:52.13\00:27:55.91
