Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:45.24\00:00:46.94 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh, and today, I'm delighted to have 00:00:46.97\00:00:50.22 Dr. David DeRose with us from what... 00:00:50.25\00:00:52.58 Oklahoma, The Lifestyle Center of America 00:00:52.61\00:00:54.69 That's exactly right; that's home for me 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.60 ...has been for about 4 years. 00:00:56.63\00:00:58.60 Now, I drove down there recently and I saw these signs for 00:00:58.63\00:01:02.10 the Chickasaw Nation. 00:01:02.13\00:01:03.37 What's that all about? 00:01:03.40\00:01:04.52 Well actually, Oklahoma used to be called Indian territories. 00:01:04.55\00:01:08.99 So we have very deep roots in Native American traditions, 00:01:09.02\00:01:14.73 and Native American peoples. 00:01:14.76\00:01:16.11 A number of our staff members have Native American roots. 00:01:16.14\00:01:19.74 One of our board members, I know, has Native American roots 00:01:19.77\00:01:23.12 So, it's something that's really part and parcel of Oklahoma 00:01:23.15\00:01:27.52 Not just that, many different places, of course, 00:01:27.55\00:01:29.85 up the road a little bit, I drove through a town called 00:01:29.88\00:01:32.25 "Wichita" which is an Indian name, 00:01:32.28\00:01:34.06 and the so-called "Chisholm Trail" 00:01:34.09\00:01:36.02 with Jesse Chisholm who spoke about 14 or 15 different 00:01:36.05\00:01:38.92 Indian dialects. 00:01:38.95\00:01:41.70 The only reason I mention that is because today, 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.82 we're going to be talking about Native American health practices 00:01:44.85\00:01:48.17 and I know that there may be many Native Americans watching 00:01:48.20\00:01:51.43 3ABN in those areas, and this will be something, 00:01:51.46\00:01:53.46 of course, especially interesting to them, 00:01:53.49\00:01:55.35 but I think that it can benefit the rest of us too, I hope. 00:01:55.38\00:01:57.87 You've published something on this, 00:01:57.90\00:02:00.05 or you've given some talks on this subject? 00:02:00.09\00:02:01.78 Actually, we presented a paper at the 00:02:01.81\00:02:04.26 American Public Health Association meeting... 00:02:04.30\00:02:06.72 It's the largest meeting of public health 00:02:06.75\00:02:10.24 and preventive medicine professionals. 00:02:10.27\00:02:11.63 Each year this meeting takes place, and in 1999, 00:02:11.66\00:02:15.65 in Chicago, we presented a paper dealing with 00:02:15.68\00:02:19.37 2 Native Americans who came to our program; 00:02:19.38\00:02:22.68 one of them was a tribal leader. 00:02:22.71\00:02:24.75 Both he and his wife had diabetes. 00:02:24.76\00:02:28.04 He also had blood pressure problems, cholesterol problems 00:02:28.07\00:02:31.17 Miraculous things happened when he came to our program 00:02:31.20\00:02:34.34 at the Lifestyle Center of America. 00:02:34.37\00:02:36.25 He is just one, of probably some now 50 or 60 Native Americans 00:02:36.28\00:02:41.11 who have come through our program. 00:02:41.14\00:02:42.26 As I've worked with Native Americans, 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.23 as I've traveled to some of the reservations, 00:02:44.26\00:02:46.50 and presented talks... including just recently 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.89 I was out in Arizona speaking to the medical staff of 00:02:49.92\00:02:52.50 one of the Indian Health Service Hospitals, 00:02:52.53\00:02:54.56 they're excited about what scientific research is showing 00:02:54.59\00:02:58.81 that REALLY SAYS that the program that 00:02:58.84\00:03:00.84 God gave us in His Word is something that ironically... 00:03:00.87\00:03:04.88 ironically to some people, Native Americans had many 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.73 insights into before they even KNEW about the Bible! 00:03:07.76\00:03:11.63 So you're suggesting that maybe their health practices 00:03:11.66\00:03:13.95 are not only scientific when they look at the roots of them, 00:03:13.98\00:03:17.14 they also have a Biblical basis. 00:03:17.17\00:03:18.74 That's right and this SHOCKS people, Don 00:03:18.77\00:03:20.85 I gotta tell you, because in public health circles, 00:03:20.88\00:03:23.31 when you say Native American, you know what they think? 00:03:23.34\00:03:25.50 They don't think "health," they think "disease" 00:03:25.53\00:03:27.78 They think "alcoholism. " 00:03:27.81\00:03:29.55 They think "diabetes. " 00:03:29.58\00:03:30.90 They think... diabetes in Native Americans 00:03:30.91\00:03:34.24 I mean, this is a HUGE problem. 00:03:34.27\00:03:36.10 But what we're finding at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:03:36.13\00:03:38.96 when Native Americans go through our program, 00:03:38.99\00:03:41.56 they can reverse their diabetes. 00:03:41.59\00:03:43.53 What the research is showing is that 100 YEARS AGO 00:03:43.56\00:03:46.92 ...Well, let me give you an example. 00:03:46.95\00:03:49.28 Have you heard of the Pima Indians in Arizona? 00:03:49.29\00:03:51.57 I haven't but... That's okay What's it called again? 00:03:51.60\00:03:54.78 The Pima Indians... Pima! 00:03:54.82\00:03:56.40 The Pima Indians are probably the most well-studied 00:03:56.44\00:03:59.84 population group in the world when it comes to diabetes. 00:03:59.87\00:04:02.69 You should have heard of them but that's okay 00:04:02.72\00:04:04.03 I know it's a little out of your field. 00:04:04.06\00:04:05.93 In fact, our National Institutes for Health, 00:04:05.96\00:04:08.94 for those of our viewers that don't realize this, 00:04:08.95\00:04:11.36 this is the big RESEARCH ARM of our government. 00:04:11.39\00:04:14.29 They fund research; they do their own research. 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.45 Based there in the Washington, DC area 00:04:16.48\00:04:18.64 they have a branch of the National Institutes of Health 00:04:18.65\00:04:23.19 in Phoenix, Arizona... ... Studying this group 00:04:23.22\00:04:26.02 Studying this group in particular. 00:04:26.05\00:04:28.49 What they found in looking at records over the last 100 years, 00:04:28.52\00:04:33.30 back around the turn of the century, around 1900, 00:04:33.33\00:04:36.50 1 case of diabetes among Pima Indians. 00:04:36.53\00:04:39.97 Wow, so some BIG changes came from some reason. 00:04:40.00\00:04:42.79 In the 1940s... How many? 21 cases 00:04:42.82\00:04:47.77 TODAY, today... 50% of Pima Indians, 00:04:47.80\00:04:53.06 over 35 have diabetes. Amazing! 00:04:53.09\00:04:56.63 If we look at the historical records, Don, 00:04:56.66\00:04:58.81 Native Americans seem to have excellent health before 00:04:58.84\00:05:02.83 European influence, and they were also following a program 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.03 that I believe is VERY, very similar to the kind of program 00:05:06.06\00:05:09.94 that God wants us to follow today to optimize our health. 00:05:09.97\00:05:14.10 And it WASN'T because Native Americans were reading the Bible 00:05:14.13\00:05:17.27 So how did they get this... 00:05:17.31\00:05:19.05 I mean some Christians out there or different people that are 00:05:19.09\00:05:21.74 Christian, you know, and also scientific-type people 00:05:21.77\00:05:25.26 are saying, "Wait a minute, it's one thing to say that they 00:05:25.29\00:05:29.18 have these diseases that have come because of 00:05:29.21\00:05:31.22 Western lifestyle, but it's quite another to say 00:05:31.25\00:05:34.02 that they had some kind of divine revelation that came. 00:05:34.05\00:05:37.15 How can you make a case for that? 00:05:37.18\00:05:39.33 To me, the interesting thing is that Native Americans 00:05:39.36\00:05:43.22 traditionally have had several very important roots 00:05:43.25\00:05:47.85 in their culture. 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.10 One is a strong sense of respect for the Creator 00:05:49.13\00:05:53.80 and for creation. 00:05:53.83\00:05:55.60 A very healthy respect for their bodies, 00:05:55.63\00:05:58.41 and for all of nature... And the environment. 00:05:58.44\00:06:00.93 And the environment, yes. All of nature. 00:06:00.96\00:06:03.14 The laws that God has given us in the Bible 00:06:03.17\00:06:06.43 have that same respect throughout. 00:06:06.46\00:06:10.02 God is desiring to help us to optimize this blessing of life 00:06:10.05\00:06:15.06 that He has given us. 00:06:15.09\00:06:16.20 And even... To me, the argument that I make, Don 00:06:16.23\00:06:19.09 The argument I say to people... 00:06:19.12\00:06:21.05 They say, "Look-it, even if Native Americans didn't have 00:06:21.08\00:06:24.57 a divine revelation of this, and some would argue that... 00:06:24.60\00:06:27.28 I mean, some Native Americans would say, 00:06:27.31\00:06:30.09 "God was leading our people, even though we didn't have a 00:06:30.10\00:06:32.62 Bible, and I believe that God DOES speak through nature 00:06:32.65\00:06:36.68 and He communicates in other ways, 00:06:36.71\00:06:38.42 although the PERFECT revelation 00:06:38.45\00:06:40.75 is clearly through His Son, and through His Word. 00:06:40.78\00:06:43.07 He has been communicating through His spirit, 00:06:43.10\00:06:45.36 through revelation. 00:06:45.39\00:06:46.51 In fact, the book of Romans, right? Romans 1... 00:06:46.54\00:06:49.12 It says that, "Everyone's guiltless cause God has revealed 00:06:49.15\00:06:53.16 His character... where? 00:06:53.19\00:06:54.22 Everywhere in nature... Yeah, in nature, in what He's created 00:06:54.23\00:06:56.39 So here's the argument I make... 00:06:57.39\00:06:59.39 Regardless of where it comes from, 00:06:59.42\00:07:01.94 Native Americans traditionally seem to have some insights 00:07:01.97\00:07:05.76 into optimal healthful living practices... 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.73 But here's the bottom line, this is exciting! Really exciting! 00:07:08.76\00:07:12.45 People today, when I work with them, 00:07:12.48\00:07:15.02 they say, "Dr. DeRose, it's not going to work for me. " 00:07:15.05\00:07:17.05 "I got bad genetics. " 00:07:17.08\00:07:18.97 "My dad had this. My mom had this. " 00:07:19.00\00:07:20.84 "My grandfather had this. " 00:07:20.87\00:07:21.90 "I can't help it. I'm going to get diabetes, heart disease. " 00:07:21.93\00:07:24.05 "I'm going to have amputations, dialysis, stroke... whatever!" 00:07:24.08\00:07:26.66 Native Americans show us that even in a people group, 00:07:26.69\00:07:30.93 that is predisposed to disease, like the Pima Indians, 00:07:30.96\00:07:33.53 they didn't have that kind of disease in 1900 00:07:33.56\00:07:37.06 on their more traditional lifestyle... 00:07:37.09\00:07:39.28 It had changed even by that time. 00:07:39.31\00:07:41.07 Here's the point... No matter what genetic 00:07:41.08\00:07:43.32 hand you've GOT, LIFESTYLE can make a tremendous difference 00:07:43.35\00:07:47.33 And there is ongoing research in Native Americans 00:07:47.36\00:07:49.91 including OUR work at the Lifestyle Center of America 00:07:49.94\00:07:52.76 that says... even if you've got 00:07:52.79\00:07:54.32 Even if you're not a Native American; 00:07:54.35\00:07:55.98 if you've got a lousy hand, genetically dealt to you, 00:07:56.01\00:07:58.86 you can change it, and that's the amazing thing. 00:07:58.89\00:08:02.45 And Native American practices, these are things, many of them 00:08:02.48\00:08:07.09 and I'm not, you know, putting my seal of approval on 00:08:07.12\00:08:10.22 everything that was done by any Native American tribe. 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.98 You know, you can go out and get dream catchers, 00:08:13.01\00:08:15.05 and all the other stuff, even though... 00:08:15.08\00:08:16.40 Well, I'm not here to point, good and bad in everything. 00:08:16.43\00:08:22.10 Even in my cultural traditions, I have European 00:08:22.13\00:08:25.42 cultural traditions. 00:08:25.45\00:08:27.07 We could pick out some things that aren't so desirable. 00:08:27.10\00:08:29.54 But I want to focus on the positives, 00:08:29.57\00:08:31.49 and when I speak to Native Americans, there are so many 00:08:31.52\00:08:34.03 things in their cultural traditions that are POSITIVE 00:08:34.04\00:08:37.01 that help all of us. 00:08:37.04\00:08:38.65 So did they have a basic plant-based diet? 00:08:38.68\00:08:41.08 I mean, you usually think of Indians out there 00:08:41.11\00:08:43.33 on the back of a horse or a buffalo shooting another buffalo 00:08:43.36\00:08:47.24 or this or that, and many times you see these pictures 00:08:47.27\00:08:49.62 and all going and getting the kill. 00:08:49.65\00:08:52.66 Was it a plant-based diet, or 00:08:52.69\00:08:54.10 was there a lot of meat in the diet? 00:08:54.13\00:08:55.91 This was a shock to me, Don. 00:08:55.95\00:08:57.58 When I started working more with Native Americans 00:08:57.62\00:09:00.49 in Oklahoma, and I have to tell you, I really had 00:09:00.52\00:09:02.79 very little experience with native Americans 00:09:02.82\00:09:04.83 before I moved to Oklahoma, 00:09:04.84\00:09:06.40 and to the Lifestyle Center of America. 00:09:06.43\00:09:08.61 But, I started visiting; you know, reading 00:09:08.64\00:09:13.20 historical documents, traveling, speaking on reservations 00:09:13.23\00:09:16.87 like I said... It's amazing! 00:09:16.90\00:09:19.34 Throughout the country, you look at the Coastal Indians 00:09:19.37\00:09:22.96 on the northeast, the southeast... 00:09:22.99\00:09:25.29 You look at the Indians in Wichita, you mentioned 00:09:25.32\00:09:27.63 There is an early account of a Spanish explorer 00:09:27.66\00:09:30.28 in the 1500s, who comes into Kansas. 00:09:30.31\00:09:33.28 You think you know the plains. Yeah... Buffalo, right? 00:09:33.31\00:09:36.75 Indians, bows and arrows, and rifles on horses... Right? 00:09:36.78\00:09:40.49 Catching the buffalo? 00:09:40.50\00:09:41.89 Hey! Those were all European introductions. 00:09:41.92\00:09:44.64 The rifle and the horse? 00:09:44.67\00:09:47.20 Traditionally, what did the Spaniards find? 00:09:47.21\00:09:50.61 They found FIELDS of corn, and squash, and 00:09:50.64\00:09:54.78 an agriculturally-based society in the DESERT in Arizona! 00:09:54.81\00:09:59.54 The whole desert was irrigated. 00:09:59.57\00:10:01.77 The Hohokam people, the ancestors of the Pimas 00:10:01.80\00:10:05.04 had the whole desert irrigated. 00:10:05.07\00:10:06.78 Aerial photographs of the Phoenix River Basin today 00:10:06.81\00:10:11.05 still show shadowy lines of irrigation canals. It's AMAZING! 00:10:11.06\00:10:17.05 Agriculturally based, but then when the Europeans came... 00:10:17.08\00:10:20.39 Yes, some of the Plains Indians shifted their diet 00:10:20.42\00:10:23.21 to a meat-based diet when they could hunt much more 00:10:23.24\00:10:25.64 efficiently with horses and guns. 00:10:25.67\00:10:28.14 Interesting. So now some people that are listening today say... 00:10:28.17\00:10:30.75 "Wait a minute, not only do I disagree" and you already 00:10:30.78\00:10:34.34 cleared up this disagreement, that maybe they're plant-based 00:10:34.37\00:10:36.81 and you've certainly spoken to that eloquently... 00:10:36.84\00:10:38.92 But they might say, "I'm a Christian, and even in the Bible 00:10:38.95\00:10:41.29 it doesn't say I can't eat meat. " 00:10:41.32\00:10:42.88 What do you say to a person like that? 00:10:42.91\00:10:44.44 You know what, at the Lifestyle Center of America, Don 00:10:44.45\00:10:47.12 we never tell anyone they can't eat meat. 00:10:47.15\00:10:49.82 People come to us because they have medical problems, 00:10:49.85\00:10:52.81 and we say, "Look-it, we have you here for MAYBE 19 days" 00:10:52.84\00:10:56.34 That's the longest program we offer... we say, 00:10:56.37\00:10:58.81 "Look-it, we want to see the maximum results 00:10:58.84\00:11:00.91 in the shortest time. " 00:11:00.94\00:11:02.03 And we do use that plant-based diet, a vegetarian diet 00:11:02.06\00:11:05.02 because that, in our experience, and in the medical research 00:11:05.05\00:11:08.45 that we've reviewed, and some of the research we've done, 00:11:08.48\00:11:10.82 that gives quick results. 00:11:10.85\00:11:12.80 When people go back home, I've had Native Americans 00:11:12.81\00:11:15.23 who have gone home, and they follow a total vegetarian diet. 00:11:15.26\00:11:19.39 There was a woman, a Sioux woman; 00:11:19.42\00:11:21.20 they refer to themselves as "Lakota" 00:11:21.23\00:11:24.25 She actually went back to her tribe. 00:11:24.28\00:11:27.14 She had me speak out there, on her reservation, 00:11:27.17\00:11:29.83 and she adapted a total vegetarian diet to all the foods 00:11:29.86\00:11:34.17 that were readily accessible there in her culture. 00:11:34.20\00:11:36.60 Other Native Americans have gone back and they say, 00:11:36.63\00:11:39.16 "Look-it, it's important for me to have some wild game" 00:11:39.19\00:11:42.01 but you know what? 00:11:42.04\00:11:43.38 Wild game is actually very low in fat. 00:11:43.41\00:11:46.85 Buffalo? You have any idea how much fat is in buffalo meat? 00:11:46.88\00:11:50.34 Percentage-wise? You mean wild buffalo meat? 00:11:50.37\00:11:55.47 Yeah, a wild buffalo... wild game. 00:11:55.50\00:11:57.41 Are there even wild buffalos left? 00:11:57.44\00:11:59.04 There are. You know, they're protected like in 00:11:59.07\00:12:04.17 natural protected areas. 00:12:04.20\00:12:07.63 I wouldn't probably eat it because I'd be afraid of 00:12:07.66\00:12:10.88 the disease and different things It's not really inspected. 00:12:10.91\00:12:13.79 Well, I wasn't trying to get you to eat it. 00:12:13.80\00:12:14.97 I was trying to get you to hazard a guess as to how much 00:12:14.98\00:12:17.27 fat is in their tissue. 00:12:17.30\00:12:18.78 What would you say? 00:12:18.81\00:12:19.87 Well let me give you a frame of reference. 00:12:19.90\00:12:21.67 Lean, ground beef, baked, EXTRA lean ground beef, 00:12:21.70\00:12:26.45 only about 60% fat. 00:12:26.48\00:12:28.81 So what do you think buffalo? 40 00:12:28.84\00:12:32.01 15... 15% fat? That's all. 00:12:32.02\00:12:36.44 So, I mean, if you were going to choose meat, 00:12:36.47\00:12:37.98 and you're watching your fat consumption, 00:12:38.01\00:12:39.90 which is very important when it comes to diabetes, 00:12:39.93\00:12:42.40 animal fat seems to be a factor in the development of diabetes. 00:12:42.43\00:12:47.03 Hey, if you're going to eat fat... Yes, wild game is 00:12:47.04\00:12:49.19 really a pretty good choice. 00:12:49.20\00:12:50.33 Deer is less than 20% fat. 00:12:50.36\00:12:52.57 Now, we still have some concerns ... Sure 00:12:52.58\00:12:55.73 because there are other risks... Diseases and different things 00:12:55.76\00:12:58.27 Yeah, sure, like you've mentioned, but STILL 00:12:58.30\00:13:00.42 Native Americans, even the wild game they ate, 00:13:00.45\00:13:03.03 was very low in fat. 00:13:03.06\00:13:04.25 It wasn't the chips. It wasn't the lard. 00:13:04.28\00:13:06.57 This is not what they were raised on traditionally. 00:13:06.60\00:13:09.69 We're talking with Dr. David DeRose 00:13:09.72\00:13:11.67 from the Lifestyle Center of America 00:13:11.70\00:13:13.19 He's been doing some fascinating research on the 00:13:13.22\00:13:16.63 Native American diet, and how it's related to 00:13:16.66\00:13:19.38 God's principles as seen in Scripture, 00:13:19.41\00:13:21.63 but even more interesting, or at least as interesting, 00:13:21.66\00:13:25.45 is that being the same thing that science is telling us today 00:13:25.48\00:13:28.49 And when we come back, we're we're going to look 00:13:28.52\00:13:31.19 a little further at that. 00:13:31.22\00:13:32.67 How can we have the Native American benefits. 00:13:32.70\00:13:35.68 How can we avoid any pitfalls 00:13:35.71\00:13:37.62 that they came across in their particular culture. 00:13:37.65\00:13:40.59 Join us when we come back! 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.03 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed a few pounds 00:13:44.43\00:13:47.44 Have you been on a diet for most of your life? 00:13:47.47\00:13:49.66 But not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:13:49.67\00:13:53.07 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:13:53.10\00:13:55.45 then we have a solution for you that works. 00:13:55.48\00:13:58.60 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:13:58.63\00:14:01.23 have written a marvelous booklet called 00:14:01.26\00:14:03.41 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:03.44\00:14:05.87 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:14:05.90\00:14:08.52 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:08.55\00:14:11.15 by thousands who are able to eat more, 00:14:11.18\00:14:13.56 and lose weight permanently without feeling guilty 00:14:13.59\00:14:16.22 or hungry through lifestyle medicine. 00:14:16.25\00:14:18.84 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 00:14:18.87\00:14:21.61 3ABN, and in this booklet they present a sensible approach 00:14:21.64\00:14:25.34 to eating, nutrition, and lifestyle changes 00:14:25.37\00:14:27.98 that can help you prevent heart disease, diabetes 00:14:28.01\00:14:30.31 and EVEN cancer. 00:14:30.34\00:14:31.96 Call or write today for your free copy of 00:14:31.99\00:14:33.98 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:34.01\00:14:35.76 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU 00:14:35.79\00:14:38.78 It's absolutely FREE of charge. 00:14:38.81\00:14:40.97 So call or write today. 00:14:41.00\00:14:45.34 Welcome back! We've been talking with 00:14:45.37\00:14:47.11 Dr. David DeRose about Native Americans and 00:14:47.14\00:14:51.13 really about their health practices, 00:14:51.16\00:14:52.73 and this is fascinating research that you've started to uncover. 00:14:52.76\00:14:56.17 Evidently, they had a predominantly plant-based 00:14:56.20\00:14:59.47 food or very low in fat if they were having wild game 00:14:59.50\00:15:03.67 and they had a lot of the health practices that really lead 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.95 to positive things today. 00:15:06.98\00:15:09.41 Now you mentioned that they NOW, as we are living now, 00:15:09.44\00:15:16.53 they have a lot of problems with diabetes, 00:15:16.56\00:15:18.26 and a lot of problems with other illnesses... 00:15:18.29\00:15:20.82 are there any other illnesses besides diabetes 00:15:20.85\00:15:23.01 that they seem to suffer from? 00:15:23.04\00:15:24.49 Well, the group like I mentioned earlier that has been 00:15:24.52\00:15:27.35 MOST well-studied are the Pima Indians, 00:15:27.38\00:15:29.71 and their weight concerns and diabetes as far as 00:15:29.74\00:15:33.66 chronic diseases, and of course the substance abuse issues 00:15:33.69\00:15:37.82 have also loomed large in native populations. 00:15:37.86\00:15:41.16 So these issues, though, are things that affect 00:15:41.20\00:15:44.47 you and I as well. 00:15:44.50\00:15:46.79 Whether we have obesity or diabetes diagnoses, 00:15:46.82\00:15:50.54 we ALL are at risk for this because as we tend to get older, 00:15:50.55\00:15:56.56 we tend to put on weight, and with weight comes 00:15:56.59\00:15:58.86 the risk for diabetes... 00:15:58.89\00:15:59.95 So I think as we talk about these conditions, 00:15:59.98\00:16:03.44 there is something that is applicable to everyone 00:16:03.47\00:16:06.59 regardless of what their cultural background is. 00:16:06.62\00:16:08.79 So we should ALL be thinking about a plant-based diet 00:16:08.82\00:16:11.92 like they have in their cultural past... 00:16:11.95\00:16:14.95 Yeah... I should mention one other thing 00:16:14.98\00:16:16.53 because a lot of people still may be a little skeptical. 00:16:16.56\00:16:19.14 Very interesting study, 1994, the journal "Diabetes Care" 00:16:19.15\00:16:23.54 Researchers from the National Institutes of Health 00:16:23.57\00:16:25.84 there in Phoenix, Arizona, traveled down to Mexico 00:16:25.87\00:16:29.35 and they found another cultural group, Native Americans, 00:16:29.36\00:16:33.36 that were from the same ancestry as the Pimas 00:16:33.39\00:16:36.68 in Arizona; 2 Pima groups basically. 00:16:36.71\00:16:39.44 Pimas in Arizona, Pimas in Mexico 00:16:39.47\00:16:42.59 The Pimas in Mexico were on a very different lifestyle... 00:16:42.62\00:16:46.65 High fiber diet, more active, and, interestingly, 00:16:46.68\00:16:52.04 VERY interestingly, eating meat only about once every month or 2 00:16:52.07\00:16:58.52 Basically, a vegetarian diet. 00:16:58.55\00:17:01.27 What they found in the men, for example... 00:17:01.30\00:17:03.57 Average man in his 40s, in the Pimas in Arizona, 00:17:03.58\00:17:07.65 over 50% of the them had diabetes. 00:17:07.68\00:17:10.25 Less than 10%, well under 10% of those in Mexico 00:17:10.28\00:17:14.89 Yes, they had a genetic predisposition, but LIFESTYLE 00:17:14.93\00:17:17.99 makes a huge difference, and that's the message... 00:17:18.02\00:17:20.67 Whether it's heart disease, or stroke, or diabetes, 00:17:20.71\00:17:23.33 or weight, we can't reverse ALL the genetics, 00:17:23.36\00:17:27.04 but we can make a big difference with our lifestyle... 00:17:27.07\00:17:30.01 And Native American traditional practices gave these people 00:17:30.04\00:17:33.44 tremendous health... that's what the records suggest 00:17:33.47\00:17:36.65 But NOW, it's adopting these Western practices 00:17:36.68\00:17:40.13 that have contributed to this decline in health status. 00:17:40.16\00:17:43.78 This is the same thing that we've seen with these 00:17:43.81\00:17:46.41 studies of rural China, and all these different things 00:17:46.44\00:17:48.94 but the interesting thing about this, 00:17:48.97\00:17:50.85 is that it is right here on this continent... 00:17:50.88\00:17:54.57 What about Native Americans, and their ability to 00:17:54.60\00:17:57.73 say "yes" or "no" to certain substances, 00:17:57.76\00:17:59.56 so-called "temperance?" 00:17:59.59\00:18:00.70 This is REALLY interesting, Don. 00:18:00.73\00:18:03.44 There was a famous French explorer named "le Moyne " 00:18:03.47\00:18:07.02 Jacques le Moyne and he came to what is modern-day Florida 00:18:07.05\00:18:11.79 before the Spanish had come there. 00:18:11.82\00:18:14.38 His party came there, and he observed Native Americans 00:18:14.41\00:18:17.34 really for the first time... these native peoples there. 00:18:17.37\00:18:21.61 And the accounts that he wrote about them are fascinating. 00:18:21.64\00:18:24.61 Not only did he write historical descriptions, 00:18:24.64\00:18:27.02 but he made some beautiful watercolor illustrations 00:18:27.05\00:18:30.20 that were then reproduced by another Frenchman, 00:18:30.23\00:18:32.85 Theodor de Bry into copperplate engravings. 00:18:32.88\00:18:35.94 These have stood the test of time; we have these today. 00:18:35.97\00:18:38.47 I've seen many of these illustrations. 00:18:38.50\00:18:40.45 A number of them show Native Americans eating! 00:18:40.48\00:18:44.29 And le Moyne says things like this... 00:18:44.32\00:18:46.22 These native peoples... he didn't call them native peoples 00:18:46.25\00:18:49.32 I got to tell you, he often used terms that 00:18:49.35\00:18:52.29 Derogatory... Very derogatory. 00:18:52.32\00:18:54.91 He mentions these derogatory terms like... um 00:18:54.94\00:18:58.67 I don't need to mention them. 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.08 But he says things like this, "They never overate" 00:19:01.11\00:19:06.14 "We Christians would be well to learn lessons of sobriety 00:19:06.15\00:19:11.45 from these people that we consider in such 00:19:11.48\00:19:15.05 derogatory terms"... Amazing! It's AMAZING! 00:19:15.08\00:19:17.87 He's saying, look-it, I mean and he said, "These people are 00:19:17.90\00:19:20.54 so long-lived. " They have such long lives 00:19:20.57\00:19:23.65 because they're temperate in their eating. Hmm 00:19:23.68\00:19:27.13 I'll tell ya, it's a powerful lesson, and it's something 00:19:27.16\00:19:29.52 that I believe God wants to have Christians power over. 00:19:29.55\00:19:32.62 As you and I have talked before... 00:19:32.65\00:19:35.11 So how did we get in this predicament of being, 00:19:35.14\00:19:37.96 you know, a Christian nation or a Christian people 00:19:37.99\00:19:41.15 and you're a Christian, and I'm a Christian minister... 00:19:41.18\00:19:45.05 Why is it that so MANY Christians have a problem 00:19:45.08\00:19:47.79 with this very area? 00:19:47.82\00:19:49.59 Why is it that they have used their very religion, it seems, 00:19:49.62\00:19:52.26 in a way that harms themselves? 00:19:52.29\00:19:53.70 Well you know what, this is the irony... 00:19:53.73\00:19:55.37 I talk about like traditional Native American practices 00:19:55.40\00:19:58.38 with Christians... They say, "Hey, I don't want 00:19:58.41\00:20:01.02 anything to do with that. " 00:20:01.05\00:20:02.24 That wasn't Bible-based. You see... 00:20:02.27\00:20:06.48 Or, did you hear who is a vegetarian? 00:20:06.51\00:20:08.52 It's some of these people in these... and they use some 00:20:08.55\00:20:12.42 derogatory terms, NOT Christian. 00:20:12.45\00:20:16.31 So if I'm going to be a vegetarian, 00:20:16.34\00:20:18.48 then I'm not really going to be a Christian 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.30 because the Christians aren't doing that. 00:20:20.33\00:20:22.02 You know what the irony is to me? 00:20:22.05\00:20:23.85 Native Americans do the same thing. 00:20:23.88\00:20:26.36 Let me tell you... this is a parallel explanation, 00:20:26.39\00:20:29.06 parallel situation. 00:20:29.09\00:20:31.10 You go into some Native American communities, 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.97 and what are their traditional foods? 00:20:34.00\00:20:36.33 Fried bread, you know, dough fried in lard. 00:20:36.36\00:20:39.78 Where did the lard and the fat come from? Okay 00:20:39.81\00:20:42.36 That wasn't part of their traditional foods before 00:20:42.39\00:20:45.68 European influence. 00:20:45.71\00:20:46.96 But it has now become their tradition. 00:20:46.99\00:20:49.14 They identify with this as part of their cultural identity. 00:20:49.17\00:20:53.18 Christians do the same thing. 00:20:53.21\00:20:55.70 They say, "You know, we eat meat... this is what we do 00:20:55.73\00:20:57.95 in our church. " This is what we do in our fellowship meals" 00:20:57.98\00:21:00.57 "We're not going to be like these non-Christians, 00:21:00.60\00:21:02.90 and eat like that. " 00:21:03.02\00:21:04.13 What I'm saying is, "Hey, wait a minute, Jesus came to give us 00:21:04.16\00:21:08.21 abundant life... 00:21:08.24\00:21:09.99 If He tells me to change my lifestyle, 00:21:10.02\00:21:12.63 I'm not going to look around and who else is doing it, 00:21:12.66\00:21:14.57 or who's not doing it. 00:21:14.60\00:21:16.02 And what the medical research is showing us, 00:21:16.05\00:21:18.61 and what Native American practices show us in a 00:21:18.64\00:21:21.66 group of people who have the odds stacked against some 00:21:21.69\00:21:24.26 chronic diseases like obesity, and diabetes. 00:21:24.29\00:21:27.87 It shows us that that Genesis diet... 00:21:27.90\00:21:30.29 that that Genesis lifestyle of moderate useful exercise 00:21:30.32\00:21:34.35 that God gave Adam and Eve in the Garden 00:21:34.38\00:21:36.25 of a plant-based diet, of a trusting relationship 00:21:36.28\00:21:39.63 with the Creator, of a stress-free existence... 00:21:39.66\00:21:42.64 these THINGS are things that we NEED today 00:21:42.67\00:21:45.58 and it doesn't matter if indigenous Australian, 00:21:45.61\00:21:49.40 the aborigines are adopting them or practiced them. 00:21:49.43\00:21:52.81 It doesn't matter if the Chinese have done this 00:21:52.84\00:21:55.10 traditionally from a perspective it didn't 00:21:55.13\00:21:58.69 incorporate Christ... 00:21:58.70\00:21:59.72 Many of these indigenous peoples knew their BODY 00:21:59.75\00:22:02.62 better than we Westerners do. 00:22:02.65\00:22:04.63 And who created our bodies? God 00:22:04.64\00:22:07.84 So these people have insights into the way 00:22:07.87\00:22:10.63 the Creator made them, and they lived that way traditionally. 00:22:10.66\00:22:14.07 So why should we DISTANCE ourselves from those 00:22:14.10\00:22:17.51 practices as Christians? Sure 00:22:17.54\00:22:18.86 We should just build on it. 00:22:18.89\00:22:20.05 So, they believe in the Creator, 00:22:20.08\00:22:21.96 they're very much into protecting the earth, 00:22:21.99\00:22:25.15 and their own bodies, and their cultural history. 00:22:25.18\00:22:27.56 You kind of made them aware of this, 00:22:27.59\00:22:29.97 and it's probably an "ah-ha" experience for them. 00:22:30.00\00:22:32.19 They are temperate in terms of these 00:22:32.22\00:22:34.48 things that you've seen in the artwork... 00:22:34.51\00:22:36.53 What about exercise? 00:22:36.57\00:22:37.86 Exercise is very interesting. 00:22:37.89\00:22:40.11 You know, exercise today, for many Americans 00:22:40.14\00:22:43.38 is either something to avoid, or, if a person is exercising, 00:22:43.41\00:22:48.63 it's with great fervor, and religiosity... 00:22:48.66\00:22:51.31 "I exercise 45 minutes a day... 00:22:51.34\00:22:53.73 and I check my pulse, and I see what it is... 00:22:53.76\00:22:56.73 Kind of an obsessive compulsive type thing. 00:22:56.76\00:22:58.66 Now don't misunderstand, I'm not depreciating that, 00:22:58.70\00:23:02.33 but what Native Americans did is 00:23:02.36\00:23:03.89 exercise was a part of their daily life. 00:23:03.92\00:23:06.03 It wasn't something they DID... 00:23:06.06\00:23:07.90 They exercised as part of their life. 00:23:07.94\00:23:09.68 They were physically active people, 00:23:09.71\00:23:11.63 even in some of their ceremonies. 00:23:11.66\00:23:13.91 They were physically active. 00:23:13.94\00:23:15.56 Of dances and all that... Okay 00:23:15.59\00:23:17.19 Not just dances, they even had 00:23:17.20\00:23:18.93 organized sports in the southwest. 00:23:18.96\00:23:21.29 They had ball courts that had both physical fitness, 00:23:21.32\00:23:26.01 and religious connotations... some very interesting parallels 00:23:26.02\00:23:30.44 What I tell people today, not that we've got to build 00:23:30.47\00:23:34.19 Native American ball courts and start playing out there 00:23:34.22\00:23:37.91 in some kind of worship ritual... 00:23:37.94\00:23:39.19 What I tell people, Don, is we need to make exercise 00:23:39.22\00:23:44.17 a part of our daily routine. 00:23:44.20\00:23:45.70 It's just like... you don't get up in the morning and say, 00:23:45.73\00:23:48.49 "Boy, am I going to eat today?" 00:23:48.50\00:23:49.54 Now you could choose to fast... but isn't the given for you 00:23:49.57\00:23:53.46 like it is for me that you're going to eat? 00:23:53.47\00:23:54.73 How about sleep? Is that kind of a given? 00:23:54.76\00:23:57.37 Ah, that's a given! 00:23:57.40\00:23:58.55 What about exercise? You don't have to answer 00:23:58.58\00:24:00.29 but the point is, most Americans They don't even think about it. 00:24:00.32\00:24:03.50 They don't even think about it, it's something they add, 00:24:03.51\00:24:05.20 or maybe if they have time. 00:24:05.23\00:24:06.57 Native Americans with part and parcel the way they lived 00:24:06.60\00:24:08.67 I say, "Hey, all of us need to get on that mode. " 00:24:09.53\00:24:12.14 A day without a meal, a day without sleep, 00:24:12.17\00:24:15.29 a day without exercise... You can choose that, 00:24:15.32\00:24:17.74 but that should be the exception. 00:24:17.75\00:24:19.80 The rule, all of those things should be part of our 00:24:19.83\00:24:21.91 daily activities. 00:24:21.94\00:24:22.96 Did they ever fast, or use natural remedies? 00:24:22.99\00:24:25.39 Definitely... and these are some of the 00:24:25.40\00:24:27.44 most amazing things. 00:24:27.47\00:24:28.84 FASTING was something that was used by almost... 00:24:28.87\00:24:31.69 I mean very pervasive among many Native American tribes. 00:24:31.72\00:24:36.10 FASTING has some profound benefits for diseases like 00:24:36.13\00:24:39.72 high blood pressure, and diabetes. 00:24:39.75\00:24:41.47 Some fascinating things... maybe some time we'll 00:24:41.50\00:24:43.56 have a chance to explore that. 00:24:43.59\00:24:45.21 But other natural remedies... Herbs! 00:24:45.22\00:24:49.29 Herbs are just blossoming in America. 00:24:49.32\00:24:53.03 Today we're starting to realize that these things 00:24:53.06\00:24:55.80 have some unique health-giving properties. 00:24:55.83\00:24:58.12 One of the herbs that Native Americans use was ginseng. 00:24:58.15\00:25:02.02 American ginseng in the year 2000 was studied, 00:25:02.05\00:25:06.74 was published in one of the prominent medical journals. 00:25:06.75\00:25:10.12 Sore throats... No, it was actually for diabetes 00:25:10.15\00:25:11.62 Diabetes? And they found that using 00:25:11.65\00:25:13.46 ginseng could actually LOWER blood sugar levels, 00:25:13.49\00:25:17.14 after a meal. 00:25:17.17\00:25:18.19 We do use some herbs and natural supplements 00:25:18.20\00:25:20.79 at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:25:20.82\00:25:22.35 in addition to a lifestyle program... 00:25:22.38\00:25:24.51 And this is a tradition that Native Americans espoused. 00:25:24.54\00:25:28.25 You know what... The Lord, Himself, in the Bible 00:25:28.29\00:25:32.03 often used natural substances. 00:25:32.06\00:25:34.31 I think of Hezekiah's healing... 00:25:34.34\00:25:36.55 Yeah, used a fig poultice. 00:25:36.58\00:25:39.22 A lot of people say, "Ah, you know, that was just 00:25:39.25\00:25:41.32 someplace to focus his faith. " 00:25:41.35\00:25:43.59 But I think we should be very careful about how we dismiss 00:25:43.60\00:25:48.57 God's use of illustrations of remedial agencies in His work. 00:25:48.60\00:25:53.71 So all of these things... 00:25:53.74\00:25:56.00 They had a Lifestyle Center of America Native American 00:25:56.03\00:26:01.61 approach... kind of a sanitarium approach to life. 00:26:01.64\00:26:04.40 You know what? They did have that. 00:26:04.43\00:26:06.63 They had a place outside the camp 00:26:06.64\00:26:08.88 where people went for healing based on natural remedies. 00:26:08.91\00:26:12.84 They were also very advanced. 00:26:12.87\00:26:14.72 Throughout many Native American tribes, there is evidence, Don, 00:26:14.75\00:26:17.79 well before European influence, they were doing brain surgery! 00:26:17.82\00:26:22.46 Successful brain surgery. 00:26:22.49\00:26:24.63 How do we know? 00:26:24.66\00:26:25.74 We see surgical holes in skulls 00:26:25.78\00:26:29.49 that show bone regrowth indicating that brain surgery 00:26:29.53\00:26:32.89 was done by Native Americans and it was successful. 00:26:32.92\00:26:36.25 So they not only used the natural, but where it was 00:26:36.28\00:26:38.73 appropriate, apparently they used surgical techniques as well 00:26:38.74\00:26:41.37 They actually had an advanced healthcare system 00:26:41.40\00:26:44.46 that included a sanitarium model... 00:26:44.49\00:26:46.50 People coming away from their village for a time 00:26:46.53\00:26:49.58 to get intensive healing, and that's what we're doing today! 00:26:49.61\00:26:52.45 That addresses the issue... so many people say, 00:26:52.46\00:26:54.54 "We evolved... we have to be hunt or gatherers, 00:26:54.57\00:26:57.49 or this or that, and now are more and more advanced" 00:26:57.52\00:26:59.99 Really, this is the model of the Bible... that people were 00:27:00.02\00:27:03.69 very intelligent, very in-tune with what God 00:27:03.72\00:27:06.31 wanted for their bodies, and their lifestyle, 00:27:06.34\00:27:08.90 and then they fell away. 00:27:08.93\00:27:10.99 This is the plea I'm making... 00:27:11.02\00:27:12.29 Get back to the way God created us. 00:27:12.32\00:27:14.67 He wants to reveal it to us, 00:27:14.70\00:27:16.22 and He wants to give us the power to live that way. 00:27:16.25\00:27:18.80 Fascinating information if you're a 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.10 Native American, or even if you're not... 00:27:21.14\00:27:23.54 And some real principles that can help YOU, 00:27:23.57\00:27:25.94 and, of course, myself, and Dr. DeRose to live healthy 00:27:25.97\00:27:29.50 and to have health that lasts for a lifetime. 00:27:29.53\00:27:31.57 If you'd like more information about this and other 00:27:31.60\00:27:33.42 papers that are published by the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:27:33.43\00:27:35.86 or their programs, please contact them at their website 00:27:35.89\00:27:39.44 which is... www. lifestylecenter. org 00:27:39.47\00:27:47.05 lifestylecenter. org 00:27:47.08\00:27:49.31 or contact us here at 3ABN, and we'd be happy to 00:27:49.34\00:27:52.36 get you in touch with them. 00:27:52.39\00:27:53.82 Thanks for joining us today and have a GREAT day! 00:27:53.85\00:27:55.95
