Tell us a little bit about that. 00:00:57.41\00:01:00.22 Well, we're located in Southern Oklahoma, 00:01:00.25\00:01:02.78 and a lot of people say.. "Southern Oklahoma?" 00:01:02.81\00:01:04.78 "Where is that?" It's totally off the map, 00:01:04.81\00:01:07.33 if you will, for most people... as far as your experience. 00:01:07.36\00:01:09.52 But what about midway between Oklahoma City and Dallas, Texas 00:01:09.55\00:01:12.67 ...People come from all over the country, 00:01:12.70\00:01:14.41 and outside the country to focus on 00:01:14.44\00:01:17.26 lifestyle-related diseases in a concentrated way... 00:01:17.29\00:01:20.45 whether it be diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, 00:01:20.46\00:01:24.07 a host of problems.. we address there with a Christian staff 00:01:24.10\00:01:28.01 in a very structured focused approach. 00:01:28.04\00:01:31.31 It's a beautiful facility... 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.33 I've been able to visit there once, driving up FROM 00:01:32.36\00:01:35.66 the Dallas area, and then I was able to stop in there 00:01:35.69\00:01:38.81 and it's nice on that hill... 00:01:38.84\00:01:40.01 you have all those walking trails; a beautiful facility. 00:01:40.04\00:01:42.41 You also do research, don't you? 00:01:42.44\00:01:44.55 You publish papers and what-not in the medical literature. 00:01:44.58\00:01:47.76 Exactly, we've been trying to say, 00:01:47.79\00:01:50.15 "Look at it, if the Lord has given us light that makes 00:01:50.18\00:01:53.20 a difference as far as health, 00:01:53.23\00:01:54.70 we should be able to demonstrate it in a way that actually 00:01:54.73\00:01:58.41 changes the world's perspective. 00:01:58.44\00:02:00.05 You see, a lot of times people will say... 00:02:00.08\00:02:01.09 "Well, now that's RELIGION, don't bring that into the 00:02:01.12\00:02:04.54 medical dialog" But what we're saying... 00:02:04.57\00:02:06.49 Look-it, I mean, God doesn't work OUTSIDE of natural laws 00:02:06.50\00:02:11.20 typically... Yes, He does the miraculous, no question! 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.75 But God chooses, typically, to 00:02:13.76\00:02:16.95 work through the laws of our being. 00:02:16.98\00:02:18.49 He shows us how to cooperate with Him... 00:02:18.52\00:02:20.66 And so we believe that sound science and true 00:02:20.69\00:02:24.56 Biblical revelation are in total harmony, 00:02:24.59\00:02:27.54 and that we can demonstrate that. 00:02:27.57\00:02:29.08 That's one of our focuses there at the 00:02:29.11\00:02:30.59 Lifestyle Center of America. 00:02:30.62\00:02:32.23 We're going to talk today about weight management, obesity. 00:02:32.26\00:02:36.53 How big a problem is it, and why should we even talk about it 00:02:36.57\00:02:39.84 Some people are going... "Oh no, here it goes again" 00:02:39.88\00:02:42.46 Tell us a little bit about the magnitude of the problem, 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.04 and HOW we can address this. 00:02:45.07\00:02:47.22 The reason for talking about it, Don, is not to put 00:02:47.25\00:02:49.78 another guilt trip on people. 00:02:49.81\00:02:51.36 I mean, we got Madison Avenue saying... 00:02:51.39\00:02:53.19 "Look it, if you can't fit into this, size 5 dress, 00:02:53.22\00:02:57.55 you're no good" We don't need anymore of that. 00:02:57.56\00:03:00.37 God doesn't say, "Look it, if you weigh so much 00:03:00.40\00:03:04.48 on this chart, then you can... you know, be in My kingdom" 00:03:04.51\00:03:07.92 Forget all that stuff... 00:03:07.95\00:03:09.43 God accepts us right where we're at on the basis 00:03:09.46\00:03:12.53 of His gracious sacrifice of His Son. 00:03:12.56\00:03:15.04 We don't have to worry about our weight, 00:03:15.07\00:03:16.91 as far as our standing with God... 00:03:16.94\00:03:19.00 BUT, as Christians, God wants to give us abundant life, 00:03:19.03\00:03:24.98 and it's true that overweight is a burden on our bodies. 00:03:25.01\00:03:28.88 I mean, it's hard on our joints. 00:03:28.91\00:03:30.71 It increases our risk of certain types of cancer, 00:03:30.72\00:03:33.69 and heart disease, and high blood pressure and diabetes. 00:03:33.72\00:03:36.89 And we see people at the Lifestyle Center with these 00:03:36.92\00:03:40.01 kind of problems, and we see people with amputations. 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.95 We see people with blindness. 00:03:42.96\00:03:45.02 We see people who have had strokes. 00:03:45.05\00:03:46.79 And many times, one of the risk factors that help to 00:03:46.82\00:03:50.98 contribute to the state of dis-ease, 00:03:51.01\00:03:54.42 was being overweight. 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.43 So we need to talk about this subject... 00:03:56.46\00:03:58.34 not to put a guilt trip, but to give people some help, 00:03:58.35\00:04:00.73 some resources that can help them be successful. 00:04:00.76\00:04:02.93 It even starts when we're young, doesn't it? 00:04:02.94\00:04:04.61 No question about it. 00:04:04.64\00:04:05.71 I mean, it's easiest to learn new habits when we're young, 00:04:05.72\00:04:09.33 but it's never too LATE to learn. 00:04:09.36\00:04:11.81 Okay, you know, let's talk about that... 00:04:11.84\00:04:13.33 When we're young, I mean, I've noticed, I read a 00:04:13.36\00:04:15.60 little bit of research about this once, 00:04:15.63\00:04:16.96 about how supermarkets are organized. 00:04:16.99\00:04:19.22 And they're all organized so that people will make the choice 00:04:19.25\00:04:22.02 for this food or that food... 00:04:22.05\00:04:23.53 You can't just go in there... 00:04:23.54\00:04:25.39 I remember I wanted to display some product that I 00:04:25.42\00:04:27.65 happened to be involved with a few years back before I 00:04:27.68\00:04:30.50 was a nurse, and now a pastor... 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.35 And I wanted to display some things in the store, 00:04:32.38\00:04:35.02 and they said, "No, this is where that goes, this is where 00:04:35.05\00:04:37.45 this goes and it's a highly competitive thing. 00:04:37.48\00:04:40.18 And it has all to do with food choices. 00:04:40.21\00:04:42.00 What can you tell us about food choices, and how to make them? 00:04:42.03\00:04:45.49 Well, you know, food choices are typically made 00:04:45.50\00:04:49.36 because of what we THINK we like. 00:04:49.39\00:04:52.40 But I like to change that whole perspective, Don... 00:04:52.41\00:04:56.43 because what the research shows us is that we don't 00:04:56.46\00:05:00.25 CHOOSE the foods that we like anywhere near as much 00:05:00.28\00:05:05.38 as we like the foods that we choose. Um hmm 00:05:05.41\00:05:09.77 You say... come on here, right, we're playing with words here. 00:05:09.80\00:05:13.06 Yeah, semantics... you figure that... you send a guy away 00:05:13.09\00:05:15.88 to school for years, and years, and look what happens to him. 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.96 Don, here's the point... 00:05:18.99\00:05:20.81 ALL of us, when we were growing up, 00:05:20.84\00:05:22.89 you know, coming back to these childhood influences, 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.76 CHOICES were made for us. 00:05:24.79\00:05:26.89 And we developed tastes; 00:05:26.92\00:05:28.52 we developed enjoyments. 00:05:28.55\00:05:29.71 You know, I ask groups, when I speak with them, 00:05:29.74\00:05:31.52 I say, "How many of you have ever been at a table 00:05:31.55\00:05:37.52 where foods from another culture were being served?" 00:05:37.55\00:05:40.37 Can you relate to that? Yes! 00:05:40.40\00:05:41.81 And I've been at those tables but it's not a NORMAL thing 00:05:41.84\00:05:46.07 Not a normal thing, but let me ask you this... 00:05:46.10\00:05:47.66 "Have you ever been served some just WONDERFUL FOOD 00:05:47.69\00:05:50.79 to people of a certain culture that you tasted, 00:05:50.82\00:05:54.03 and, I mean, it just didn't cut it?" Yeah, I have. 00:05:54.04\00:05:57.69 You can relate to that? Uh huh.. 00:05:57.72\00:05:59.12 Do you mind me just being curious and asking what it was? 00:05:59.15\00:06:02.30 Well, it was, in this particular case, I was in Romania 00:06:02.33\00:06:06.92 and there was a great spread of things, 00:06:06.95\00:06:09.23 and there was eggplant that was called "vinete" 00:06:09.26\00:06:12.74 and it was this pureed eggplant... 00:06:12.77\00:06:14.82 They were all talking about how wonderful it was, 00:06:14.85\00:06:16.34 and I was going... "Yeah" 00:06:16.37\00:06:18.32 You know, I was just going... da... da... da... DUH 00:06:18.35\00:06:22.19 So it really didn't really... No, it didn't cut it. 00:06:22.22\00:06:24.01 Not too tasty? No Okay 00:06:24.04\00:06:25.62 Here's the point. 00:06:25.65\00:06:26.69 Were your taste buds different than those Romanians there? 00:06:26.72\00:06:30.30 Ahhh... No. Yeah, the same taste buds 00:06:30.33\00:06:33.43 How come something that's so delicious to them, 00:06:33.46\00:06:36.69 and, you know, to you... I mean, you could say 00:06:36.72\00:06:38.41 If I gave you 5 choices, that would probably be the last one 00:06:38.44\00:06:41.03 Right? Right, it would be the last one. 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.41 Well this is a common experience. 00:06:43.44\00:06:45.52 Why do we like the foods we like? 00:06:45.55\00:06:47.49 The good news, Don... There's good news about this! 00:06:47.52\00:06:50.05 God has created us with the ability to choose 00:06:50.08\00:06:54.88 what we will enjoy. 00:06:54.91\00:06:56.68 So I am going like vinete. 00:06:56.71\00:06:59.27 I'm going to like this eggplant 00:06:59.28\00:07:00.38 spread by the end of this program? 00:07:00.41\00:07:02.33 Don, here's how it works... Okay 00:07:02.36\00:07:04.81 If you habitually make choices, 00:07:04.84\00:07:07.27 you know, provided you're not allergic to the food, 00:07:07.30\00:07:10.55 or, you know, were sick the first day you ate it... 00:07:10.58\00:07:14.32 and was vomiting, and there's some association in your brain 00:07:14.35\00:07:17.03 with that and the illness. 00:07:17.06\00:07:18.12 The point is, if we habitually make choices, 00:07:18.15\00:07:20.25 we actually tend to develop enjoyments. 00:07:20.28\00:07:23.11 I mean, we've all seen this, 00:07:23.14\00:07:24.76 and it's been shown in the medical research literature... 00:07:24.79\00:07:26.71 Classic study, I love this study. 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.34 It was done in New York City. 00:07:28.37\00:07:30.28 It was the pilot study for something called the... 00:07:30.31\00:07:32.21 "The WINS Study" Wins? 00:07:32.22\00:07:33.85 Yeah, WINS... Women's Interventional Nutritional Study 00:07:33.88\00:07:37.61 It's a study that's ongoing right now. All right 00:07:37.64\00:07:40.43 The hypothesis behind this study is that women 00:07:40.46\00:07:44.67 who have had breast cancer, if they eat a high fat diet, 00:07:44.70\00:07:47.86 will increase the risk of recurrent breast cancer. 00:07:47.89\00:07:51.80 So, the way this study was designed is they were going to 00:07:51.83\00:07:54.24 help women decrease their fat consumption... 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.22 Say goodbye to the fat taste... 00:07:57.25\00:07:58.78 Yeah, say goodbye to high fat foods at least. 00:07:58.81\00:08:02.61 And then, they predicted that these women would have 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.91 less risk of breast cancer RECURRENCE as time went on. 00:08:05.94\00:08:09.73 But here's what happened, Don... 00:08:09.76\00:08:11.06 BEFORE the funding agencies wanted to shell out the bucks, 00:08:11.09\00:08:14.13 this is a huge study taking place through multiple 00:08:14.16\00:08:16.79 centers throughout the country 00:08:16.82\00:08:18.17 I mean, I'm sure the budget is, I'm sure, in the millions. 00:08:18.18\00:08:21.32 Before they funded it, they said, 00:08:21.35\00:08:23.00 "We want to make SURE that you can get women 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.11 to decrease their fat consumption. " 00:08:25.14\00:08:26.77 So they did this pilot study to see if the intervention worked. 00:08:26.78\00:08:30.86 To see if nutritionists could help women who had had 00:08:30.89\00:08:34.08 breast cancer decrease their fat consumption. 00:08:34.11\00:08:36.86 They couldn't do it. Believe it or not, they could! 00:08:36.89\00:08:39.03 They DID? They did... it worked! 00:08:39.04\00:08:40.76 They went from maybe 35 to 40% of their calories 00:08:40.79\00:08:43.92 as fat, and that's pretty typical in America... 00:08:43.95\00:08:46.17 down to 20 to 25%. 00:08:46.20\00:08:48.58 I tell you this story because here's what happened... 00:08:48.61\00:08:50.60 The majority of those women who dramatically 00:08:50.63\00:08:54.11 decreased their fat consumption 00:08:54.14\00:08:55.99 they lost the taste... 00:08:56.02\00:08:59.99 In fact, they developed a DISTASTE for the high fat 00:09:00.02\00:09:04.87 foods that they used to ENJOY! HOW? 00:09:04.90\00:09:08.02 Their tastes had changed by CHANGING their CHOICES. 00:09:08.05\00:09:10.98 Okay, they made the decision. YEAH! 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.38 So here's the message, Don... 00:09:13.41\00:09:15.18 When people are sitting here, they're listening to us talking 00:09:15.19\00:09:18.52 And they're saying, "But I LIKE my high fat foods" 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.58 "I LIKE the foods I'm eating" 00:09:20.59\00:09:22.35 God has given them the ability, if they make changes 00:09:22.38\00:09:25.56 and stick with them, to develop new enjoyments. Okay 00:09:25.59\00:09:29.36 Now, you know, I've heard that it takes about 90 days 00:09:29.39\00:09:32.84 to get over the fat taste, is that right? 00:09:32.85\00:09:34.81 You know, what I find, Don, is the taste and the desire 00:09:34.84\00:09:39.68 for things has a lot to do with several questions. 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.40 One that we should talk about first is the whole issue of 00:09:42.41\00:09:46.52 "addictions" 00:09:46.55\00:09:48.88 Now when I start talking about addictions when it comes to food 00:09:48.91\00:09:51.80 I mean, I'm sure we've got psychologists and psychiatrists 00:09:51.83\00:09:54.27 listening in and they say, "Dr. DeRose, he's specialty 00:09:54.30\00:09:57.11 internal medicine, preventive medicine, 00:09:57.14\00:09:59.65 master's in public health... those aren't psychological 00:09:59.66\00:10:02.30 degrees... I mean, he's on thin 00:10:02.33\00:10:03.50 ice when he's talking about "addictions" 00:10:03.53\00:10:05.34 Okay... we don't have to use the word "addiction" 00:10:05.38\00:10:08.09 A lot of our viewers can relate though. 00:10:08.12\00:10:10.27 Let's use the words "problem foods" 00:10:10.30\00:10:13.56 As I work with LOTS of people, hundreds of people with 00:10:13.59\00:10:16.67 weight problems... Almost every single one of them 00:10:16.70\00:10:20.87 has some problem foods. 00:10:20.90\00:10:22.28 Whether you call it an addiction or not, 00:10:22.31\00:10:23.81 there are foods that they can't control consumption of. 00:10:23.84\00:10:26.73 Brownies! Could be brownies! 00:10:26.74\00:10:29.21 Another one on the list that's often high is ice cream! 00:10:29.24\00:10:31.67 Chocolate in general. Chips! 00:10:31.70\00:10:34.66 People say... If someone says, 00:15:14.26\00:15:15.65 "I really can't relate to that " "Problem foods"... 00:15:15.68\00:15:17.96 "I don't have any problem foods" 00:15:17.99\00:15:19.12 The other VERY important principle is eating more 00:15:19.15\00:15:23.08 WHOLE, NATURAL, PLANT-BASED FOODS. 00:15:23.11\00:15:26.84 And I mean, it harkens back in my mind... 00:15:26.87\00:15:29.79 to the original diet that the Creator gave. 00:15:29.83\00:15:31.71 Now, I've got, Christians in many walks of Christianity 00:15:31.75\00:15:36.47 and a lot of them say, "Yes, Dave, that's fine. " 00:15:36.50\00:15:39.22 You can point to Genesis 1, and you can say the ideal diet 00:15:39.25\00:15:43.17 is a plant-based diet, but "hey," I mean, Jesus Himself, 00:15:43.20\00:15:46.64 I mean, God the Father, I mean they instituted the sacrificial 00:15:46.67\00:15:49.65 system... I mean, animal sacrifices" 00:15:49.68\00:15:52.41 "It wasn't a flesh-free diet. " 00:15:52.44\00:15:54.55 But you know, it's very interesting, Don, and AGAIN, 00:15:54.56\00:15:57.84 I'm not a theologian here, so some are going to want to 00:15:57.87\00:16:00.40 call me to task... 00:16:00.43\00:16:01.88 But I notice when God seems to be preparing His people 00:16:01.91\00:16:05.76 trying to really communicate with them, 00:16:05.79\00:16:07.97 the truths of His character, He often has a period of 00:16:08.00\00:16:11.49 dietary change. 00:16:11.52\00:16:12.50 It happened in the Wilderness, and God LARGELY withdrew 00:16:12.53\00:16:16.67 flesh foods from the Israelites in the Wilderness. 00:16:16.70\00:16:19.57 There still was the sacrificial system, but MANNA 00:16:19.60\00:16:22.45 was what they were subsisting on... What is it? 00:16:22.48\00:16:24.66 In Genesis, that plant-based diet was designed 00:16:24.67\00:16:30.15 for Adam and Eve who were designed to LIVE FOREVER 00:16:30.16\00:16:32.42 in intimate communion and mental fellowship, as well as 00:16:32.45\00:16:36.76 physical fellowship with their Creator. 00:16:36.79\00:16:38.77 What does all this have to do with what I'm talking about? 00:16:38.80\00:16:41.52 What it has to do with what I'm talking about is 00:16:41.55\00:16:43.60 there seemed to be some unique benefits to that 00:16:43.63\00:16:46.47 plant-based diet, and it's clear when it comes to 00:16:46.50\00:16:48.59 weight reduction, because these plant foods, 00:16:48.62\00:16:50.89 whether it's the fruits, the whole grains, the vegetables, 00:16:50.92\00:16:53.29 they tend to be less calorically dense... 00:16:53.32\00:16:56.79 Does that mean something to you? 00:16:56.80\00:16:58.38 Well, it just means that they are not as hard on your system 00:16:58.41\00:17:02.42 That's right... they don't give you as many CALORIES for sure 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.35 I mean, if we took 2 big vats... and we stick them here 00:17:05.38\00:17:08.21 in front of us... you know one, 00:17:08.22\00:17:09.58 each of them holds... How big would a vat... 00:17:09.61\00:17:12.42 5 gallons maybe? 00:17:12.45\00:17:14.05 Two 5 gallon glass vats, you know, on a 00:17:14.08\00:17:16.59 table here in front of us. 00:17:16.62\00:17:17.84 You fill one with iceberg lettuce. 00:17:17.88\00:17:20.01 You know, we smash it in there. 00:17:20.04\00:17:21.33 You know, we use all our strength. 00:17:21.36\00:17:22.51 We just cram that iceberg lettuce in. 00:17:22.52\00:17:24.42 In another one, we put milk chocolate in! 00:17:24.45\00:17:27.03 Oh man, no question. 00:17:27.06\00:17:28.96 Milk chocolate is going to do you in... it's very dense. 00:17:28.99\00:17:31.81 Yeah, a lot more calories, right? 00:17:31.84\00:17:33.79 Here's the issue... 00:17:33.82\00:17:35.30 When we talk about weight reduction, 00:17:35.33\00:17:37.16 you don't have to cut back on the amount you EAT 00:17:37.19\00:17:40.12 if you cut back on the caloric density. 00:17:40.15\00:17:42.83 If you fill yourself up. 00:17:42.86\00:17:44.31 If you satisfy yourself with these plant-based foods, 00:17:44.34\00:17:48.08 the fruits and the whole grains, and the vegetables... 00:17:48.11\00:17:50.46 You know, people at the Lifestyle Center of America, 00:17:50.49\00:17:52.52 when they come to our program, 00:17:52.55\00:17:53.96 they don't come usually because they want to be vegetarians. 00:17:53.99\00:17:57.50 They know our diet is vegetarian. 00:17:57.53\00:17:59.82 You know, I'll tell you a secret... 00:17:59.85\00:18:01.39 We've had people smuggle meat into the facility. 00:18:01.42\00:18:04.76 Really, and didn't blow up? 00:18:04.79\00:18:06.50 One guy... No they didn't blow up. 00:18:06.53\00:18:08.15 We don't search the rooms. 00:18:08.18\00:18:09.29 He smuggled beef jerky in. 00:18:09.32\00:18:11.12 He was so sure he couldn't survive. 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.38 But you know what he found? 00:18:13.41\00:18:14.63 And he fessed up to this at the end of the program... 00:18:14.66\00:18:16.96 He found the food tasted great! 00:18:16.99\00:18:19.21 He wasn't having to deny himself. 00:18:19.24\00:18:21.34 So here's the point... 00:18:21.37\00:18:24.94 Calorically-dense foods over here, the chocolate, the meat, 00:18:24.97\00:18:28.09 the fat... If you eat those, you're going to gain weight. 00:18:28.12\00:18:31.21 If you want to lose weight, you avoid them, 00:18:31.24\00:18:32.42 and you SHIFT to the plant-based diet. 00:18:32.43\00:18:35.18 Not only does it have less calories, 00:18:35.21\00:18:36.69 it tends to be lower in SODIUM. 00:18:36.72\00:18:38.73 Many people who are carrying some extra pounds, 00:18:38.76\00:18:41.07 have high blood pressure. 00:18:41.10\00:18:42.29 Many of them, if you drop that sodium content, 00:18:42.32\00:18:45.51 the blood pressure comes down. 00:18:45.54\00:18:47.29 Water follows the salt... Water follows the salt. 00:18:47.32\00:18:50.26 That's an interesting thing. 00:18:50.29\00:18:51.77 People with fluid balance problems, they say, 00:18:51.80\00:18:53.81 "Hey, stay away from the water" Right? 00:18:53.84\00:18:55.62 No... as long as your heart is fine and your kidneys are fine, 00:18:55.65\00:18:58.71 drinking more water actually helps to get rid of sodium 00:18:58.74\00:19:01.87 and actually gets rid of excess fluid. 00:19:01.90\00:19:04.12 Same with watching your sodium content. 00:19:04.15\00:19:06.47 The other thing when it comes to these natural food choices, 00:19:06.50\00:19:10.29 is the form of the food. 00:19:10.32\00:19:11.65 A lot of people think it would be excellent to drink lots 00:19:11.68\00:19:18.00 of juice... you know juicing! 00:19:18.01\00:19:20.33 And I've got friends who juice, and I've got patients 00:19:20.36\00:19:24.27 who said, "Listen when I started juicing, 00:19:24.30\00:19:25.84 I started feeling a lot better" 00:19:25.87\00:19:27.29 Well you know WHAT? 00:19:27.32\00:19:28.68 Most Americans are not eating enough fruits and VEGETABLES! 00:19:28.71\00:19:31.77 So SURE, drinking juice... fruit juice and vegetable juice 00:19:31.80\00:19:35.24 is going to give you some benefits. Okay... 00:20:09.83\00:20:11.76 But it would take you a lot longer to eat 8 apples, 00:20:11.79\00:20:14.17 or 5 apples. It would... it would 00:20:14.20\00:20:15.63 Here's the issue... 00:20:15.66\00:20:17.03 The more you refine the food... 00:20:17.04\00:20:19.02 This was actually studied in the medical literature. 00:20:19.05\00:20:21.22 You take the apples, you put them in the form of applesauce 00:20:21.25\00:20:25.58 The applesauce, same number of calories, 00:20:25.61\00:20:27.94 gives you much less satisfaction per calorie. 00:20:27.97\00:20:30.77 You go the apple juice step... 00:20:30.80\00:20:33.70 much less satisfaction per calorie. 00:20:33.74\00:20:36.98 If you want the most satisfaction PER CALORIE, 00:20:37.02\00:20:40.15 CHEW IT... Eat those whole fruits, 00:20:40.18\00:20:42.89 those whole vegetables, those whole grains. 00:20:42.92\00:20:44.96 The Creator really gave us a program to help us 00:20:44.99\00:20:47.89 keep more trim. 00:20:47.90\00:20:49.36 Chew it - don't stew it... 00:20:49.37\00:20:50.92 If you did, you blew it. Something like that. 00:20:50.93\00:20:52.14 Wow, did you just come up with that? 00:20:52.17\00:20:54.27 Just came up with that. Boy, that's impressive! 00:20:54.30\00:20:56.77 Well okay, so, simple foods as grown, back to that again. 00:20:56.78\00:21:02.16 The Genesis diet... 00:21:02.19\00:21:03.27 You know, you had mentioned that God took people into the 00:21:03.30\00:21:06.40 and basically took away all their meat; 00:21:06.43\00:21:10.13 gave them something which they thought was bad, 00:21:10.16\00:21:12.70 but it turned out to be very good... Manna 00:21:12.73\00:21:15.25 But that kind of brings me back to an issue that I think we 00:21:15.28\00:21:18.34 left kind of at the break, and that is... 00:21:18.37\00:21:20.34 When should we eat? 00:21:20.35\00:21:21.97 When did God give that food? 00:21:22.00\00:21:23.51 When should we eat and what should be the largest meal, 00:21:23.54\00:21:26.42 and how and when, and whatever. 00:21:26.45\00:21:28.58 Well, I hadn't thought of the parallel with the manna 00:21:28.61\00:21:31.19 with the coming in the morning, 00:21:31.22\00:21:33.10 but meal timing is critical. 00:21:33.13\00:21:35.82 A lot of people say, "Yeah, Dr. DeRose, I know that... 00:21:35.85\00:21:38.92 You know at night... you know, you're just relaxing 00:21:38.95\00:21:41.50 and kicking back, watching TV maybe... 00:21:41.53\00:21:43.70 so you don't burn the calories" 00:21:43.73\00:21:45.23 No, no no... it's a LOT more than that. 00:21:45.26\00:21:47.52 You are actually a different person, Don, 00:21:47.55\00:21:50.31 at night, than you are in the morning. 00:21:50.34\00:21:52.69 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde... 00:21:52.72\00:21:54.05 Well, I hope it's not quite that bad! Ha, ha, ha 00:21:54.08\00:21:56.55 I've never lived in your home. 00:21:56.58\00:21:58.12 I guess we did stay in a home together once. 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.38 That's right, it was okay... When we were traveling. 00:22:00.41\00:22:02.09 But here's the situation... All right 00:22:02.12\00:22:04.39 Early in the morning, your body is geared 00:22:04.42\00:22:08.25 for productivity and performance, 00:22:08.28\00:22:10.35 Study after study shows if you eat a good breakfast, 00:22:10.38\00:22:13.07 you perform better! 00:22:13.10\00:22:14.52 The body TAKES calories, and transforms them 00:22:14.55\00:22:18.01 for output early in the day. 00:22:18.04\00:22:20.35 Later in the day, your body moves into a restorative mode. 00:22:20.38\00:22:25.40 Instead of being like you were early in the day, 00:22:25.43\00:22:28.98 the state of what we call "lipolysis" 00:22:29.01\00:22:31.39 "Lipolysis"... Yeah, lipo-lysis. Okay 00:22:31.42\00:22:34.56 Fat breakdown... that's favored in the morning... lipolysis 00:22:34.59\00:22:37.52 Later in the day, as you're restoring body processes, 00:22:37.55\00:22:42.37 you move into a state of "lipogenesis" 00:22:42.40\00:22:45.72 Lipogenesis... The creation of fat. Okay 00:22:45.75\00:22:49.11 So when you eat late at night, 00:22:49.14\00:22:50.83 what's happening is, metabolically, your body is 00:22:50.86\00:22:54.58 primed to take those calories and store them. 00:22:54.61\00:22:58.60 What we want to do is, we want to shift our 00:22:58.63\00:23:00.50 caloric intake to earlier in the morning. 00:23:00.53\00:23:02.77 And now, this brings up another issue. 00:23:02.80\00:23:04.70 And this has been, I think, misunderstood. 00:23:04.73\00:23:06.95 I've read a lot of the medical literature out there, 00:23:06.98\00:23:09.34 and we always get controversy in our program 00:23:09.37\00:23:11.62 because we emphasize 2, or at most 3 meals a day. 00:23:11.65\00:23:15.83 We've always got people saying... 00:23:15.86\00:23:17.23 "Dr. DeRose, you know, my dietician says, 5 meals, 6 meals 00:23:17.26\00:23:21.12 7 meals, I have diabetes!" 00:23:21.15\00:23:22.83 Let me guess, yeah, diabetics. 00:23:22.86\00:23:24.24 "Yeah, I'm supposed to eat throughout the whole day" 00:23:24.27\00:23:26.54 You know what the average diabetic... 00:23:26.57\00:23:28.14 Do you know what happening to that person? 00:23:28.15\00:23:29.71 They're gaining more and more weight, 00:23:29.74\00:23:31.76 and their diabetes is getting more and more out of control 00:23:31.77\00:23:35.09 Because WEIGHT is one of the things that causes 00:23:35.12\00:23:37.81 insulin resistance. 00:23:37.84\00:23:39.13 Insulin doesn't work like it should. 00:23:39.16\00:23:40.83 So I'm a diabetic listening today, I should really 00:23:40.84\00:23:43.82 have just 2 or 3 meals a day. 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.96 Let me tell you though, Don, before we change 00:23:45.99\00:23:48.18 their meal schedule, we change their medication schedule. 00:23:48.21\00:23:51.77 And that's the beauty of a 00:23:51.80\00:23:52.79 lifestyle center approach probably. That's exactly it. 00:23:52.82\00:23:55.60 When people come to our center, or other centers like ours, 00:23:55.63\00:23:58.34 it's a structured environment 00:23:58.40\00:24:00.08 where the doctors are working with them. 00:24:00.12\00:24:01.85 We can change their medications. 00:24:01.88\00:24:03.61 We can get them on an optimal diet. 00:24:03.64\00:24:05.33 We can often, in type 2 diabetes get people off their insulin. 00:24:05.36\00:24:10.10 A paper that we presented in Washington, D.C., 00:24:10.13\00:24:12.56 at a big national meeting in '98, 00:24:12.59\00:24:14.66 we actually showed in a series of diabetes patients 00:24:14.67\00:24:17.72 70% of them, of the type 2 diabetics, who came on insulin, 00:24:17.75\00:24:22.16 were OFF their insulin in just 19 days. 00:24:22.19\00:24:24.81 Amazing! And most of them are overweight, cause we're 00:24:24.82\00:24:27.69 talking about overweight, and that addresses it 00:24:27.72\00:24:30.67 SO, is it fair to say then that if we eat a big breakfast, 00:24:30.70\00:24:36.78 we're going to lose weight? 00:24:36.81\00:24:38.74 Well, actually it really should probably start, Don, at night 00:24:38.77\00:24:43.16 Because if you eat the big meal at night, 00:24:43.19\00:24:45.43 I'll tell you, you can get up as early as you want 00:24:45.46\00:24:47.72 in the morning... You're not going to be hungry 00:24:47.75\00:24:48.96 I mean, you probably still got food sitting in your 00:24:48.99\00:24:50.95 stomach from the night before. 00:24:50.99\00:24:52.25 SO, if you cut out that evening meal, 00:24:52.29\00:24:54.90 you're going to lose weight. 00:24:54.93\00:24:56.33 That's often where it starts. 00:24:56.36\00:24:57.94 And again, if you're on medication for blood sugar, 00:24:57.97\00:25:00.55 you've got to do this with a doctor's supervision. 00:25:00.58\00:25:03.69 Watching... Definitely! 00:25:03.72\00:25:04.94 But dropping off that evening 00:25:04.98\00:25:07.16 meal is a power... and it's been studied! 00:25:07.19\00:25:09.05 It's been studied in the medical literature. 00:25:09.08\00:25:10.90 You change your meal-timing, you lose weight. 00:25:10.93\00:25:13.47 Now, I'm a nurse, but I'm also a minister, 00:25:13.50\00:25:16.34 and I was gripped by that story from Exodus that you shared. 00:25:16.37\00:25:19.86 When you look at that story, you only could get the food 00:25:19.90\00:25:23.36 till 12 noon... it melted away. 00:25:23.39\00:25:25.93 You couldn't get up at night and eat! 00:25:25.96\00:25:27.63 And if you tried to keep it overnight, it went BAD! 00:25:27.66\00:25:30.46 You couldn't have a BIG evening meal! Isn't that amazing? 00:25:30.49\00:25:32.48 Could God have known about the Lifestyle Center? 00:25:33.28\00:25:35.31 Maybe that was His Lifestyle Center? 00:25:35.32\00:25:37.44 Hopefully, the Lifestyle Center is learning 00:25:37.47\00:25:40.89 what God has been trying to teach us 00:25:40.92\00:25:43.06 for a long time, and we're sharing that. 00:25:43.10\00:25:45.23 That's our vision, Don. 00:25:45.27\00:25:46.26 Amazing... So, anything else about the times that 00:25:46.29\00:25:49.10 we should eat... BIG breakfast before what... 9 AM? 00:25:49.13\00:25:54.40 I don't like to specify the times, 00:25:54.43\00:25:58.06 because, you know, different people are on 00:25:58.09\00:25:59.31 different schedules; but what we find 00:25:59.34\00:26:01.32 is many people have weight problems 00:26:01.35\00:26:03.18 ...That evening meal is what really sabotages them 00:26:03.21\00:26:06.22 And a lot of people, one of the keys... 00:26:06.25\00:26:07.85 In fact, a woman in our program right now 00:26:07.88\00:26:10.32 at the Lifestyle Center of America, just left... 00:26:10.35\00:26:12.16 She saw me when she arrived... 00:26:12.19\00:26:14.06 She had talked with me several months before coming. 00:26:14.09\00:26:15.92 She said, "Dr. DeRose, that suggestion worked. " 00:26:15.95\00:26:18.38 She was frustrated! She was a young lady 00:26:18.41\00:26:19.99 actually fairly thin, but still 00:26:20.02\00:26:21.59 had a little bit of weight to lose... 00:26:21.62\00:26:23.18 She didn't know what to do. 00:26:23.21\00:26:24.33 I suggested leaving off the evening meal. 00:26:24.37\00:26:26.79 She said, it worked! 00:26:26.82\00:26:27.97 That was the secret for her. 00:26:28.00\00:26:29.95 You know, I've tried the 2 meals a day, 00:26:29.98\00:26:31.75 and I go back and forth with that, and 3... 00:26:31.78\00:26:35.08 And the reason is, and this is probably the last thing we 00:26:35.11\00:26:37.75 can talk about... But the reason is because 00:26:37.76\00:26:40.98 it's GOOD for me if I eat at 9 and, say, 3 o'clock, 00:26:41.01\00:26:44.75 and nothing else... 00:26:44.78\00:26:46.14 But it doesn't work out with ANYONE ELSE'S schedule 00:26:46.17\00:26:48.80 that I have to deal with, and food is such a social 00:26:48.83\00:26:52.77 thing where barriers are broken down. 00:26:52.80\00:26:55.13 What do you say to someone that has that type of job? 00:26:55.16\00:26:58.75 Well I say, Don... "Welcome to the real world. " 00:26:58.78\00:27:01.76 You know we can talk about all the ideals, 00:27:01.79\00:27:04.26 but, you know, the Lord will help you to say which 00:27:04.29\00:27:06.68 of the ideals can I incorporate in my real life. Sure 00:27:06.71\00:27:09.92 I mean, Jesus stayed up all night sometimes. 00:27:09.95\00:27:12.23 Was that a healthful practice? Not for melatonin. 00:27:12.26\00:27:14.76 Yeah, but you know what? 00:27:14.77\00:27:16.10 God was leading His Son to do that. Yes 00:27:16.11\00:27:18.30 He did NOTHING but what the Father revealed. 00:27:18.33\00:27:20.58 And so you can look on the surface, 00:27:20.61\00:27:22.28 and you can say, "Well, that's really not the best. " 00:27:22.31\00:27:24.18 But listen, I know God's leading in your ministry, 00:27:24.21\00:27:26.88 and He will continue to do it. 00:27:26.91\00:27:27.97 He'll lead our viewers as they take these principles... 00:27:28.00\00:27:30.76 They say, "Lord, what would You have me to do?" 00:27:30.79\00:27:33.00 Give them the guidance and the power to put it into practice. 00:27:33.03\00:27:36.05 We've been talking with Dr. David DeRose, 00:27:36.08\00:27:38.65 and we've been talking about weight, 00:27:38.68\00:27:40.58 how to get rid of it, and how to keep it off 00:27:40.59\00:27:42.79 in a healthy way. 00:27:42.82\00:27:44.73 If you'd like more information, contact the Lifestyle Center at 00:27:44.74\00:27:48.84 www. lifestylecenter. org 00:27:48.85\00:27:52.67 or contact us here at 3ABN 00:27:52.70\00:27:54.54 And thanks for watching. 00:27:54.57\00:27:55.68 We hope you have health that lasts for a lifetime. 00:27:55.72\00:27:57.71
