You like to live with that name. 00:01:14.81\00:01:16.85 You know, you are a doctor of internal medicine... 00:01:16.88\00:01:20.62 How many years did you go to school? 00:01:20.65\00:01:22.38 Ohhh... too many! 00:01:22.41\00:01:23.67 Sometimes we call it "eternal medicine" 00:01:23.70\00:01:27.91 Quite a long time you had to go to medical school, 00:01:27.94\00:01:29.71 then you did a residency and then probably more after that. 00:01:29.74\00:01:32.46 Yes, and I'm also subspecialized in geriatrics. 00:01:32.49\00:01:36.24 Okay, excellent! 00:01:36.27\00:01:37.42 And then, you're also an associate professor 00:01:37.45\00:01:39.12 there at Loma Linda! 00:01:39.15\00:01:40.31 At Loma Linda University, that's correct. 00:01:40.34\00:01:42.00 Well we're glad that you could 00:01:42.03\00:01:43.06 take some time out of your busy schedule... 00:01:43.09\00:01:45.60 And also, you work in what's called... 00:01:45.64\00:01:48.12 "preventive medicine" or so-called "lifestyle medicine" 00:01:48.15\00:01:51.24 I believe you work at The Lifestyle Center of America 00:01:51.27\00:01:53.35 there in Oklahoma. That's correct 00:01:53.38\00:01:55.29 And, tell us a little bit about that Lifestyle Center... 00:01:55.32\00:01:57.71 How long has it been there? 00:01:57.72\00:01:59.20 Well, we opened our doors in 1996, 00:01:59.23\00:02:02.17 and it's just one of the lifestyle centers 00:02:02.20\00:02:06.08 that exist around the country; 00:02:06.11\00:02:07.98 we're not technically associated with each other... 00:02:08.01\00:02:12.26 But it's kind of the legacy that has been set forth 00:02:12.29\00:02:16.21 that prompted the development of "The Battle Creek Sanitarium" 00:02:16.24\00:02:21.40 W A Y back in the 1800s. 00:02:21.43\00:02:23.41 These Lifestyle Centers are getting a lot of 00:02:23.44\00:02:25.77 press these days. 00:02:25.78\00:02:27.56 They're actually getting funding 00:02:27.59\00:02:28.82 by government agencies now because they WORK! 00:02:28.86\00:02:32.28 That's true! Is that right? 00:02:32.32\00:02:33.33 We are not funded YET by government agencies, 00:02:33.37\00:02:35.85 but some are looking at ways of being able to have that done 00:02:35.88\00:02:40.23 But the principles, like for instance, 00:02:40.26\00:02:41.80 Dr. Dean Ornish with all his studies, 00:02:41.83\00:02:44.64 and some people are familiar with that... 00:02:44.67\00:02:46.00 with the low-fat, low-cholesterol, 00:02:46.03\00:02:49.29 high-carbohydrate diet. 00:02:49.32\00:02:50.93 They're seeing that that works and they're starting to 00:02:50.96\00:02:54.58 at least do studies that may lead to that. 00:02:54.61\00:02:57.26 So you guys are really on the cutting edge. Yes 00:02:57.29\00:02:59.63 Now, at The Lifestyle Center of America, among others... 00:02:59.66\00:03:03.78 I know you're trying to be self-depreciating there... 00:03:03.81\00:03:05.82 in that sense, like you said to me, you don't want to just 00:03:05.85\00:03:09.44 always talk about your program, 00:03:09.47\00:03:11.40 or what you're doing there, 00:03:11.43\00:03:12.61 but I want to talk about WHY it WORKS. 00:03:12.64\00:03:14.47 What happens PHYSICALLY 00:03:14.50\00:03:16.50 to people when they go through a program like that. 00:03:16.53\00:03:18.72 What happens MENTALLY in a program like that. 00:03:18.75\00:03:22.94 What happens to, you know, people SPIRITUALLY. 00:03:22.97\00:03:25.40 What happens to people PHYSICALLY 00:03:25.43\00:03:27.35 when they go through your program? 00:03:27.38\00:03:28.63 I'd step back a little bit and start off with saying that 00:03:28.66\00:03:32.14 simple, natural remedies; simple approaches to things 00:03:32.17\00:03:36.88 applied in faith can actually produce supernatural results... 00:03:36.91\00:03:40.17 And that's what we see at The Lifestyle Center of America 00:03:40.20\00:03:42.40 and we see in other Lifestyle Centers around the country. 00:03:42.43\00:03:43.50 Simple lifestyle measures 00:03:44.88\00:03:47.54 applied in faith get results. That's correct. 00:03:47.58\00:03:49.65 Sounds like something out of the New Testament; 00:03:49.68\00:03:51.72 sounds like something out of the Bible! 00:03:51.75\00:03:53.49 Actually, it's a principle that is found in the Bible. 00:03:53.52\00:03:56.97 And having faith and trust in God to hold Him at His Word 00:03:57.00\00:04:01.24 ...you know, He SAYS, what we should eat, 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.89 and He has given us instructions 00:04:03.92\00:04:06.20 and we're just following those things. 00:04:06.23\00:04:09.06 So the top 3 killers in America, let me see if I'm right... 00:04:09.09\00:04:11.29 Heart disease, #1 Stroke, #2 00:04:11.30\00:04:14.42 Cancer #3 That's correct 00:04:14.45\00:04:16.66 What's #4? Diabetes 00:04:16.69\00:04:18.25 What's #5? I think AIDS is coming up there 00:04:18.28\00:04:22.69 Accidents are high... Pneumonia, infectious diseases. 00:04:22.72\00:04:27.14 Lung problems. Chronic obstructive lung disease 00:04:27.17\00:04:29.56 Okay, those kind of things. 00:04:29.59\00:04:30.82 Are all those kind of things you 00:04:30.85\00:04:31.86 see there at The Lifestyle Center? 00:04:31.87\00:04:33.06 We see all of those, but we pay more attention to 00:04:33.09\00:04:36.67 diabetes, heart disease, high high blood pressure and obesity. 00:04:36.70\00:04:40.77 Now, we look at the causes of disease or the cause of 00:04:40.80\00:04:44.67 death by disease... one way of looking at it is 00:04:44.70\00:04:48.41 actually list kind of disease, 00:04:48.44\00:04:50.20 but another is what's underlying. 00:04:50.23\00:04:52.12 What has caused these diseases... 00:04:52.15\00:04:53.72 And by and far, the #1 issue is DIETARY AND EXERCISE 00:04:53.75\00:05:00.21 Okay, that combination of HOW people live, their DAILY life, 00:05:00.24\00:05:03.64 actually is the GREATEST contributor to premature death. 00:05:03.65\00:05:06.67 So do you have a track there? 00:05:06.70\00:05:07.80 Do you have a physical exercise place 00:05:07.83\00:05:09.24 to address the exercise issues? 00:05:09.27\00:05:11.15 At our place, we have a fitness center, 00:05:11.18\00:05:14.01 and we have lots of trails, lots of walking space, 00:05:14.04\00:05:17.55 ...I should say, outside of the center, that people can enjoy. 00:05:17.58\00:05:21.66 Okay, and then concerning the nutrition and dietary things, 00:05:21.69\00:05:26.12 do you have a kitchen there; 00:05:26.15\00:05:27.15 do you have different things like that? 00:05:27.18\00:05:28.36 We have instruction in how to prepare foods, 00:05:28.39\00:05:31.08 and we have a restaurant where people enjoy 00:05:31.11\00:05:36.29 2 or 3 REALLY first class gourmet meals a day... 00:05:36.32\00:05:43.13 And really, it's an EXCITING thing to be a part of, 00:05:43.16\00:05:49.33 as you see people coming, 00:05:49.36\00:05:50.51 especially when they come in skeptical... 00:05:50.54\00:05:52.36 You know, they're there because they say, 00:05:52.39\00:05:54.39 "Well you know, somebody is forcing me to come" 00:05:54.42\00:05:56.06 "My wife says if I don't do better, 00:05:56.07\00:05:59.22 she's not going to be happy" ... so they COME! 00:05:59.25\00:06:02.87 So they come even with their arms twisted, 00:06:02.90\00:06:05.24 and they feel good when they leave. 00:06:05.27\00:06:06.95 That's right, because they may come skeptical, 00:06:06.98\00:06:09.62 and after they've tried and they've seen, 00:06:09.65\00:06:12.13 they say, "I don't know what I was afraid of; 00:06:12.16\00:06:14.70 I don't know what I was skeptical about, 00:06:14.73\00:06:16.06 this is phenomenal. " 00:06:16.09\00:06:17.59 Well, they've said that the proof is in the pudding... 00:06:17.62\00:06:20.66 the proof is in the details, 00:06:20.69\00:06:22.05 and I think that you brought some details with you today. 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.28 Maybe some physical details... 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.09 What happens to a person that has high blood sugar, 00:06:26.12\00:06:29.26 you know, diabetes in your program. 00:06:29.29\00:06:30.30 Well not wanting to misquote or overstate... 00:06:30.33\00:06:33.27 People in our program... what I have here is a list of 00:06:33.30\00:06:37.53 some of our details with regard to cholesterol, and so on. 00:06:37.56\00:06:43.26 For cholesterol, people who spend 19 days there, 00:06:43.29\00:06:47.59 decrease their total cholesterol by 11.5% 00:06:47.62\00:06:51.26 And what does that mean? 00:06:51.29\00:06:53.36 For every percentage drop in cholesterol, 00:06:53.39\00:06:55.80 what happens to your heart disease? 00:06:55.83\00:06:56.97 They decrease their risk of heart disease by 2-3% 00:06:57.00\00:07:00.06 So if it has dropped that much, it's 50% or more. 00:07:00.09\00:07:03.28 Well, we're looking at 22-33% 00:07:03.31\00:07:06.47 decrease in risk of dying of heart disease... Amazing! 00:07:06.50\00:07:11.60 So what happens then in... 00:07:11.63\00:07:12.61 We also look at the LDL cholesterol that has decreased. 00:07:12.64\00:07:15.24 That's the LOUSY, the BAD cholesterol. 00:07:15.27\00:07:17.40 That has decreased by 13.5% 00:07:17.43\00:07:19.70 The triglycerides tend to be dropping even faster, 00:07:19.73\00:07:24.54 and, on average, we're looking at 20.59%, almost 21% 00:07:24.55\00:07:29.43 DROP in triglycerides for people who come through our program. 00:07:29.46\00:07:32.87 Our HDL cholesterols tend to drop a little bit. 00:07:32.88\00:07:36.36 HDL is the so-called "good" cholesterol, 00:07:36.39\00:07:39.01 and if we look at the people who have the WORST profile, 00:07:39.04\00:07:43.01 that is the MOST RISK for heart disease, 00:07:43.04\00:07:44.91 their HDL cholesterols actually go UP, 00:07:44.94\00:07:47.69 while the LDL cholesterols go down, 00:07:47.72\00:07:49.58 and their triglycerides go down, 00:07:49.61\00:07:50.59 and their total cholesterols go down. 00:07:50.63\00:07:51.67 But overall, the reason they probably drop is because 00:07:51.71\00:07:53.49 the total cholesterol goes down 00:07:53.50\00:07:54.90 and that's a part of the total cholesterol, is that right? 00:07:54.93\00:07:56.24 That's part of the total cholesterol, 00:07:56.27\00:07:57.67 but it also has to do with our particular dietary approach. 00:07:57.70\00:08:02.92 We include in the dietary program 00:08:02.95\00:08:07.70 that people can have nuts, seeds, avocados, olives... 00:08:07.73\00:08:11.27 things like that in moderation. 00:08:11.30\00:08:12.85 These allow for changes in the triglyceride, 00:08:12.88\00:08:16.96 and the HDL cholesterol that we don't see if people 00:08:16.99\00:08:19.57 were to take these out of the diet. 00:08:19.60\00:08:21.28 It would go down much faster. Yeah 00:08:21.31\00:08:23.00 Okay, a question... Why should someone 00:08:23.03\00:08:27.84 go to a Lifestyle Center? 00:08:27.87\00:08:29.28 Lots of people say... "Look I would go across 00:08:29.31\00:08:31.87 the street to learn how to cook different food or this or that 00:08:31.90\00:08:35.22 because I don't want to do it. " 00:08:35.25\00:08:36.22 But why go away and go to a place like a Lifestyle Center? 00:08:36.25\00:08:39.58 We have several different ways of approaching this. 00:08:39.61\00:08:43.44 One is, if someone has a chronic disease, 00:08:43.47\00:08:46.73 or wants to prevent a chronic disease, 00:08:46.76\00:08:48.50 They can try it the OLD way, and the old way is 00:08:48.53\00:08:51.57 they'll THINK about it, they'll think about it, 00:08:51.60\00:08:55.13 they'll say "yes, I'll try it" and they never do it. 00:08:55.16\00:08:59.33 So this jumpstarts them. That's correct 00:08:59.36\00:09:02.03 It's a jumpstart at a new way of living. 00:09:02.06\00:09:04.95 It's NOT just putting the person on a diet... 00:09:04.98\00:09:06.70 It's NOT just an issue of starting them off 00:09:06.71\00:09:09.84 on an exercise program... No 00:09:09.87\00:09:11.07 It's actually showing them and teaching them about 00:09:11.10\00:09:13.76 their body and about the way that they live 00:09:13.79\00:09:16.35 and how the way they live 00:09:16.38\00:09:17.42 affects what's happening to them healthwise. 00:09:17.45\00:09:21.09 But it's not just even telling them about it... 00:09:21.12\00:09:23.45 as they experience it themselves, 00:09:23.46\00:09:25.15 they see the numbers, we have no secrets. 00:09:25.18\00:09:27.48 So, people see what their laboratory tests are; 00:09:27.51\00:09:30.19 they get a full explanation for their laboratory tests, 00:09:30.20\00:09:33.35 and they follow every step of the way - NO secrets. 00:09:33.38\00:09:38.42 It's almost like anything... 00:09:38.45\00:09:39.43 It's like... "Taste and see that the Lord is good" 00:09:39.46\00:09:41.15 the text says... and if you try anything 00:09:41.18\00:09:43.74 at them, you know, the first time you do ANYTHING, 00:09:43.77\00:09:46.02 someone goes with you providing that emotional support 00:09:46.05\00:09:48.71 ...I've been here before, I know what this is like, 00:09:48.74\00:09:50.70 and then go with me. 00:09:50.73\00:09:51.93 I mean this is the way people work... Yes 00:09:51.94\00:09:53.90 I don't know if you've traveled much around the world, 00:09:53.93\00:09:57.69 and probably the first time you went somewhere, 00:09:57.72\00:10:00.23 someone went with you. 00:10:00.26\00:10:01.45 I know that when I went with my wife to Romania, 00:10:01.48\00:10:04.85 she's Romanian, I felt a great comfort that she was with me. 00:10:04.88\00:10:08.21 I've traveled to countries and I didn't know anybody there, 00:10:08.24\00:10:10.82 but I certainly liked it a lot better when someone was with me! 00:10:10.85\00:10:13.55 And then they introduced me to the food and the culture, 00:10:13.58\00:10:16.04 and different things and I would 00:10:16.07\00:10:17.09 feel comfortable going there on my own now! 00:10:17.12\00:10:18.80 That's kind of the idea, probably. 00:10:18.83\00:10:20.66 Even if somebody didn't go before you, 00:10:20.69\00:10:22.57 sometimes having company with you... 00:10:22.60\00:10:24.10 We have found that husbands and wives who come together 00:10:24.13\00:10:27.58 actually do BETTER not only because 00:10:27.61\00:10:30.93 they're learning the same thing but when they get back home, 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.69 what one may have forgotten, the other one says, 00:10:33.72\00:10:35.86 "You know what, we had decided that we were going to do this. " 00:10:35.89\00:10:38.61 So they help keep each other accountable... 00:10:38.64\00:10:40.50 And that is very, very helpful. 00:10:40.53\00:10:42.66 Part of the issue of cardiac rehabilitation 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.92 with the Lifestyle Center, or in the general public, 00:10:45.95\00:10:48.96 we know that if both husband and wife are involved, 00:10:48.97\00:10:53.07 the husband or the wife who has the heart disease, 00:10:53.10\00:10:55.81 actually does better in the long run. 00:10:55.84\00:10:57.40 Does blood pressure come down? 00:10:57.43\00:10:58.93 Blood pressure comes down. 00:10:58.96\00:11:00.18 Uhh, let's see, do I have anything here on blood pressure? 00:11:00.21\00:11:02.67 No I don't, on this list. 00:11:02.70\00:11:04.10 But typically, we see a drop in 00:11:04.13\00:11:06.60 the systolic and the diastolic, the top and bottom numbers... 00:11:06.63\00:11:09.25 I don't have those numbers to give you, however. 00:11:09.28\00:11:11.04 When they go down, so do they go off their 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.51 blood pressure medication if they have it? 00:11:12.54\00:11:14.01 Many people who come in on 00:11:14.04\00:11:15.15 multiple blood pressure medications, 00:11:15.18\00:11:16.66 leave with a lot LESS medication 00:11:16.69\00:11:19.08 that they have to take, and some of them leave without 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.09 having to take any medications at all. 00:11:21.12\00:11:22.76 Do their pants still fit when they leave? 00:11:22.79\00:11:25.08 Most people... No 00:11:25.11\00:11:27.43 We have a statistic with regard to weight loss. 00:11:27.46\00:11:31.23 In terms of pounds lost, we're looking at a 00:11:31.26\00:11:37.99 mean change of about 8.3 pounds in 19 days 00:11:38.02\00:11:42.42 or 4.1% drop in weight. 00:11:42.45\00:11:45.65 So it's not a lot but it's going off like it came on over time. 00:11:45.68\00:11:52.30 The issue with regard to weight loss... 00:11:52.33\00:11:54.11 we allow people to understand that losing weight 00:11:54.14\00:11:58.93 should not be drudgery. 00:11:58.96\00:12:01.15 You see, most people don't start off by saying, 00:12:01.18\00:12:02.95 "Next year I think I'll put on 10 pounds, 00:12:02.96\00:12:06.08 and then work hard to get those 10 pounds off. " 00:12:06.11\00:12:08.17 No, most people just live the way they live, 00:12:08.20\00:12:10.68 and 10 pounds come on. 00:12:10.69\00:12:12.87 So, what we do is we help people to live better. 00:12:12.90\00:12:15.24 When they live better, the 10 pounds come off. 00:12:15.27\00:12:18.44 They don't have to FORCE those pounds off. 00:12:18.47\00:12:20.70 The pounds come off as a BY-PRODUCT of how they're living 00:12:20.71\00:12:24.63 Okay, physically, you put them in this new environment, 00:12:24.66\00:12:27.53 and they have BEAUTIFUL surroundings there... 00:12:27.56\00:12:29.30 I've seen the place, I've been there. 00:12:29.33\00:12:31.19 I actually got a chance to visit there last year, 00:12:31.22\00:12:33.44 and it's a beautiful place, it's a beautiful environment, 00:12:33.47\00:12:35.93 there's GOOD food to eat, there's good people to talk to, 00:12:35.96\00:12:38.27 and they have a lot of social support one with another 00:12:38.28\00:12:40.68 and different things, but what do they do when they go back? 00:12:40.71\00:12:42.91 Well for many people, when they go back home, 00:12:42.92\00:12:45.26 they are also looking for ways that they can incorporate 00:12:45.29\00:12:49.31 what they are doing into their daily life. 00:12:49.34\00:12:52.07 So from the beginning of the program, we tell people 00:12:52.10\00:12:55.00 in a very straight-forward way, 00:12:55.03\00:12:57.76 if you fail to plan, you're planning to fail. 00:12:57.79\00:13:00.86 So we engage them in exercises while they're there 00:13:00.89\00:13:04.47 to plan out things for when they go back home 00:13:04.50\00:13:06.78 so they don't just fall back into what they were doing before 00:13:06.81\00:13:10.40 because that's the EASIEST thing to do. 00:13:10.43\00:13:12.22 If that's the case, then what they would have done 00:13:12.25\00:13:14.59 is they would have had a nice vacation, 00:13:14.62\00:13:16.07 they would have learned a lot 00:13:16.10\00:13:17.55 but it wouldn't have helped them in the long run. 00:13:17.58\00:13:19.69 So we encourage most of our patients, 00:13:19.72\00:13:23.36 actually we encourage ALL of our patients, 00:13:23.39\00:13:25.30 to put into practice the things that they have learned 00:13:25.33\00:13:28.81 and many people are VERY, VERY successful in doing just that. 00:13:28.84\00:13:33.35 We've been talking with Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.37 He is the medical director of The Lifestyle Center of America 00:13:36.40\00:13:39.18 and they have a web page by that same name 00:13:39.21\00:13:42.22 www. lifestylecenter. org 00:13:42.25\00:13:45.99 If you would like to get in touch with them, 00:13:46.02\00:13:47.14 know more about the programs that he has been talking about, 00:13:47.17\00:13:50.34 but you needn't do that... 00:13:50.37\00:13:51.55 even the principles would help you. 00:13:51.58\00:13:53.11 If you have a friend that needs to be watching this, 00:13:53.14\00:13:57.44 give them a call, join us. 00:13:57.47\00:13:58.74 When we come back, we'll be talking more about 00:13:58.77\00:14:01.11 the changes that can happen 00:14:01.14\00:14:02.12 when we address the issues of lifestyle. 00:14:02.15\00:14:04.13 Join us when we come back. 00:14:04.16\00:14:05.36 Have you found yourself wishing 00:14:07.88\00:14:09.18 that you could shed a few pounds? Okay! 00:15:37.27\00:15:39.18 So that's good news physically, 00:15:39.21\00:15:40.47 and those numbers... those are inspiring 00:15:40.50\00:15:43.18 to hear about those. 00:15:43.21\00:15:45.23 Those things don't HAVE to happen at a Lifestyle Center, 00:15:45.26\00:15:48.40 but it DOES happen there at your Lifestyle Center. 00:15:48.43\00:15:51.49 I want to talk about something 00:15:51.52\00:15:53.71 that a lot of people are concerned about... 00:15:53.74\00:15:55.87 that being nutrition and cognition. 00:15:55.90\00:15:58.28 You know... do you find that the nutritional changes 00:15:58.31\00:16:04.93 people make, the exercise changes people make, 00:16:04.94\00:16:07.28 the lifestyle changes people make... 00:16:07.31\00:16:09.64 What does it do to them mentally 00:16:09.67\00:16:12.34 in terms of their ability to think? 00:16:12.37\00:16:15.74 Most people report an improvement in their 00:16:15.77\00:16:18.79 thinking ability, their sense of well-being and their PRESENCE! 00:16:18.82\00:16:24.18 Some people even go so far as to say that 00:16:24.19\00:16:27.37 they have regained the SPARK 00:16:27.40\00:16:29.93 in their thinking that they thought was long-gone. 00:16:29.94\00:16:33.27 Now, be that as it may, there are some people who 00:16:33.30\00:16:36.47 have other medical conditions that ACTUALLY, 00:16:36.50\00:16:40.53 by working with them in their lifestyle, 00:16:40.56\00:16:42.98 we DISCOVER and we can test for and TREAT 00:16:43.01\00:16:47.86 problems that would have caused them to have 00:16:47.89\00:16:50.86 mental dullness. 00:16:50.89\00:16:52.02 One of the common things that we find at the Lifestyle Center 00:16:52.05\00:16:54.69 particularly in people who are overweight, 00:16:54.72\00:16:56.19 is that they may have obstructive sleep apnea 00:16:56.22\00:17:00.32 that they didn't know about. 00:17:00.35\00:17:01.70 So, in other words, they have these times when they're not 00:17:01.73\00:17:05.31 breathing? Apnea means not breathing. 00:17:05.34\00:17:07.18 Not breathing and this would occur typically at night 00:17:07.21\00:17:11.57 and their spouse might be aware of it; 00:17:11.60\00:17:16.25 the snoring might be loud or whatever. 00:17:16.28\00:17:18.42 Sometimes husbands and wives sleep in different rooms 00:17:18.45\00:17:20.82 because of the loud snoring. 00:17:20.85\00:17:21.86 But it doesn't have to be that way... 00:17:21.90\00:17:23.49 And we discover this... we put them on appropriate 00:17:23.52\00:17:29.17 therapy... By hearing it? 00:17:29.20\00:17:31.91 No, sometimes it's not a matter of hearing it, 00:17:31.94\00:17:33.48 we suspect it. Okay 00:17:33.51\00:17:34.63 We look at the person, we hear the person, 00:17:34.66\00:17:36.19 we perform the inventory that we have 00:17:36.22\00:17:42.29 ...an 18-page inventory that we use - health questionnaire 00:17:42.32\00:17:45.05 and we suspect it, we test for it, 00:17:45.08\00:17:47.87 and lo and behold, the person has this problem. 00:17:47.90\00:17:49.97 By treating it, oftentimes their alertness during the day 00:17:50.00\00:17:55.45 improves and they do very, very well 00:17:55.48\00:17:58.36 with some very simple intervention. 00:17:58.39\00:18:00.11 The long-term treatment, of course, 00:18:00.14\00:18:01.83 is that after they have lost much more weight, 00:18:01.86\00:18:04.73 then they may not even need 00:18:04.76\00:18:05.75 to use the breathing assistive devices that we prescribe. 00:18:05.78\00:18:10.41 So they feel a lot better. 00:18:10.44\00:18:11.91 They are sharper and they finally have gotten rest 00:18:11.94\00:18:14.00 when they never really have been 00:18:14.03\00:18:15.86 getting good sleep. That's correct. 00:18:15.90\00:18:17.29 Similarly, in people who have diabetes, 00:18:17.32\00:18:18.68 by getting the blood sugar under control, 00:18:18.71\00:18:20.38 many people do a lot better. 00:18:20.39\00:18:21.92 They FEEL better, their brains work better. 00:18:21.95\00:18:24.78 We also have a record, if you will, 00:18:24.81\00:18:29.84 of people who did not know that their thyroid 00:18:29.87\00:18:33.95 was not functioning well enough. 00:18:33.98\00:18:36.84 So they actually have hypothyroidism, 00:18:36.85\00:18:39.11 and we discover that while they are there. 00:18:39.14\00:18:41.38 And, by starting them on appropriate treatment, 00:18:41.41\00:18:44.71 and also by the change in their lifestyle which is the 00:18:44.74\00:18:48.21 undergirding of their experience, they do much better; 00:18:48.24\00:18:51.57 they think better, they're thinking more clearly, 00:18:51.60\00:18:53.49 they have more energy and more pep. 00:18:53.52\00:18:55.19 So, we have, depending upon what the circumstance might be, 00:18:55.22\00:19:00.17 we have a whole variety of reasons 00:19:00.20\00:19:01.98 why people do better mentally. 00:19:02.01\00:19:04.64 Now, I've heard a statistic that I don't know if it's true, 00:19:04.67\00:19:07.59 but you may be more up on the literature that 00:19:07.62\00:19:09.56 for every risk-factor that you have, 00:19:09.57\00:19:12.27 so-called risk-factor I guess coming out of the 00:19:12.30\00:19:14.39 studies that were done in the 40s and 50s 00:19:14.42\00:19:16.12 where we learned about heart disease... 00:19:16.15\00:19:17.53 for every MAJOR risk factor that we have, 00:19:17.56\00:19:21.49 there is an effect on our mental sensorium. 00:19:21.52\00:19:24.67 There is a downside for us mentally, have you heard that? 00:19:24.68\00:19:27.97 That is true... I don't know of any current literature 00:19:27.98\00:19:32.54 that has really tried to revive that. 00:19:32.57\00:19:35.74 If we were to look at the risk factors... 00:19:35.77\00:19:37.61 For instance, cigarette smoking, 00:19:37.64\00:19:39.10 it's a clear indicator that people who smoke cigarettes, 00:19:39.13\00:19:43.56 because of the effect of 00:19:43.59\00:19:44.80 the nicotine and the carbon monoxide, etcetera, 00:19:44.83\00:19:47.81 they aren't getting as much oxygen to the brain, 00:19:47.84\00:19:50.09 and therefore, you can EASILY 00:19:50.12\00:19:52.60 surmise that their thinking may not be quite as clear. 00:19:52.61\00:19:55.67 If they have high blood pressure, 00:19:55.70\00:19:56.98 the research has shown that people with high blood pressure 00:19:57.01\00:19:59.41 have a decrease in the white matter of their brain. 00:19:59.44\00:20:03.90 They actually have brain damage if they allow their 00:20:03.93\00:20:06.97 blood pressure to remain high 00:20:07.00\00:20:08.31 whether or not they are treated with medications. 00:20:08.32\00:20:10.28 So, that's an issue! 00:20:10.31\00:20:11.75 People with diabetes can end up with problems 00:20:11.78\00:20:15.08 associated with blood sugar being too high... 00:20:15.09\00:20:17.21 They end up with so-called diabetic dementia... 00:20:17.24\00:20:20.99 Or, if they have bouts of very low blood sugar that 00:20:21.02\00:20:24.48 is sustained over time, then they could end up with 00:20:24.51\00:20:27.34 permanent brain damage. 00:20:27.37\00:20:28.47 So if you could go through ALL of the risk factors 00:20:28.50\00:20:30.60 you can find that these things can affect... 00:20:30.63\00:20:32.48 People with atherosclerosis or coronary artery disease, 00:20:32.51\00:20:36.47 they typically have atherosclerosis affecting all 00:20:36.50\00:20:39.52 of their arteries including their arteries in the brain, 00:20:39.55\00:20:41.48 and this will, over time, decrease the 00:20:41.49\00:20:44.87 person's mental ability. 00:20:44.91\00:20:46.27 They may end up with what we call a "vascular dementia" 00:20:46.30\00:20:49.25 or an "ischemic dementia" 00:20:49.28\00:20:51.50 These things start to reverse in that 19-day program 00:20:51.53\00:20:54.35 or the other programs that you see there. 00:20:54.38\00:20:56.57 Probably if you had alumni meetings, 00:20:56.58\00:20:58.34 which I don't know if you do, 00:20:58.38\00:20:59.40 a couple of years later or something, 00:20:59.43\00:21:01.06 and people, as they are maintaining that program, 00:21:01.09\00:21:04.56 that lifestyle, they would even have more MARKED results! 00:21:04.59\00:21:07.51 Yes, over time, as you persist with a good lifestyle, 00:21:07.54\00:21:11.58 you can also increase the yield, if you will, 00:21:11.61\00:21:15.52 of the reversal of some of the processes that have been started 00:21:15.55\00:21:18.60 Now several years ago, taking some of the principles that 00:21:18.63\00:21:21.30 you have there at your program in my own life, 00:21:21.33\00:21:23.17 I started to move away from the dairy products, 00:21:23.20\00:21:25.85 and from especially the cheeses and different things... 00:21:25.88\00:21:27.97 Now there was a time when I went back, 00:21:28.00\00:21:30.63 and I just had a BIG LARGE CHEESE PIZZA, 00:21:30.66\00:21:33.69 and I could hardly think after that! 00:21:33.72\00:21:36.41 I mean, I felt TERRIBLE! 00:21:36.44\00:21:39.06 I never noticed that before, 00:21:39.09\00:21:40.76 but is that something that we see happening too? 00:21:40.79\00:21:44.90 I mean, my mind - maybe it was and actually is clearer 00:21:44.93\00:21:48.86 because of the things I'm not putting in my system. 00:21:48.89\00:21:51.11 Actually, a lot of people report that same kind of 00:21:51.14\00:21:53.85 phenomenon happening. 00:21:53.88\00:21:55.33 From the scientific standpoint, one possible explanation 00:21:55.36\00:21:59.25 which we can demonstrate, 00:21:59.28\00:22:01.07 is actually what happens when 00:22:01.10\00:22:02.85 you have a lot of saturated fat. 00:22:02.88\00:22:06.05 And that cheese pizza that 00:22:06.08\00:22:07.27 you had is LOADED with saturated fat. 00:22:07.28\00:22:09.47 The saturated fat actually coats the red blood cells; 00:22:09.50\00:22:12.81 so instead of having blood that flows through the 00:22:12.84\00:22:15.97 small blood vessels, the capillaries, 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.86 the way orange juice would flow through your capillaries, 00:22:17.89\00:22:22.29 you end up with something flowing through 00:22:22.32\00:22:24.02 your capillaries more like KETCHUP. 00:22:24.05\00:22:27.78 Now, which one do you think would be able to 00:22:27.81\00:22:30.22 give you more oxygen and take away more of the carbon dioxide? 00:22:30.23\00:22:34.61 Would it be the orange juice-type liquid, 00:22:34.64\00:22:36.56 or would it be the ketchup-type liquid? 00:22:36.59\00:22:38.15 Yeah, I get the point... the orange juice. Yes 00:22:38.18\00:22:41.09 And the reason why I use 00:22:41.12\00:22:42.91 orange juice as opposed to water 00:22:42.94\00:22:44.31 is because the blood actually has these particles, 00:22:44.34\00:22:47.01 these cells in it suspended much like some of the 00:22:47.04\00:22:50.08 particles is suspended in the orange juice itself. 00:22:50.09\00:22:52.53 So people FEEL better and they actually ARE better 00:22:52.56\00:22:56.55 in terms of the facts physically 00:22:56.58\00:22:58.02 and then in terms of what we know scientifically, 00:22:58.05\00:23:00.85 and we start to SEE those improvements MENTALLY. Yes 00:23:00.88\00:23:03.77 Now undergirding all that, you are a Christian physician; 00:23:03.80\00:23:07.76 many of the people that work at 00:23:07.79\00:23:09.11 the Lifestyle Center are Christian, 00:23:09.14\00:23:10.82 they are people of faith... 00:23:10.85\00:23:14.09 I don't believe that you can script anybody into being a 00:23:14.12\00:23:18.18 Christian or whatnot, but do you see a change 00:23:18.19\00:23:20.00 SPIRITUALLY in people? 00:23:20.03\00:23:23.21 For many people who come to the Lifestyle Center, 00:23:23.22\00:23:25.41 as they see physical improvement, 00:23:25.42\00:23:27.81 as they see mental improvement, 00:23:27.84\00:23:30.67 as they begin to relax and get rest... 00:23:30.68\00:23:33.43 some needed rest that they didn't have before, 00:23:33.47\00:23:35.91 as they drink more water and see the effects of 00:23:35.94\00:23:38.35 that on their body, as they exercise, 00:23:38.38\00:23:40.65 and take good DEEP breaths, 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.26 and EVERYTHING ELSE in their life is being enhanced, 00:23:42.29\00:23:47.06 we also find that people have what one might call 00:23:47.09\00:23:50.55 a more spiritual awakening. 00:23:50.58\00:23:52.52 They tend to start taking inventory in their own life, 00:23:52.55\00:23:57.24 and trying to find the things that MATTER to them. 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.99 As they examine that, they come face-to-face 00:24:00.02\00:24:03.06 with the reality of a Creator, a Designer, 00:24:03.09\00:24:06.12 the One who made us and the One who told us... 00:24:06.15\00:24:08.43 "Here is the way, walk ye in it. " 00:24:08.44\00:24:10.24 This is the way to live... I want you to prosper 00:24:10.27\00:24:14.02 and to be in health... 00:24:14.05\00:24:15.80 but I also want your soul to prosper as well. 00:24:15.83\00:24:18.40 Socially? 00:24:18.43\00:24:19.91 Socially, the mix of people that we have, 00:24:19.94\00:24:23.68 people interact during the course of the program, 00:24:23.71\00:24:27.32 and many people remain in contact with each other 00:24:27.35\00:24:29.76 after they leave the program... 00:24:29.79\00:24:31.38 So it's also an enhancement of people socializing. 00:24:31.41\00:24:35.76 We've had some patients who have come through 00:24:35.79\00:24:37.50 who one might call - "social outcast" 00:24:37.53\00:24:39.69 They don't really have a lot of friends and things like that. 00:24:39.72\00:24:41.96 But they come into the environment, 00:24:41.99\00:24:43.38 they meet people who care for them, 00:24:43.41\00:24:45.31 they meet other patients and guests who are there 00:24:45.34\00:24:48.44 who are going through similar kind of 00:24:48.47\00:24:50.39 health challenges and life challenges. 00:24:50.42\00:24:52.90 They may bond with 1 or 2 or 3 people. 00:24:52.93\00:24:55.04 They get to know the whole group and you know what? 00:24:55.07\00:24:57.43 We see these people come ALIVE socially. Is that right? 00:24:57.46\00:25:01.16 We've had some people who, at the beginning of a program, 00:25:01.19\00:25:03.78 have been very shy and introverted; 00:25:03.81\00:25:05.61 really, they weren't REALLY that way, 00:25:05.64\00:25:07.86 they just didn't think that they had anything to contribute. 00:25:07.89\00:25:10.57 By the end of the program, 00:25:10.58\00:25:12.01 these people are the life of the party! 00:25:12.04\00:25:14.22 They blossom because they are in an environment 00:25:14.25\00:25:16.60 that they feel very safe and comfortable. 00:25:16.63\00:25:19.01 Do they want to stay? 00:25:19.04\00:25:20.21 ACTUALLY, as you mention it, there are many people who say, 00:25:20.24\00:25:23.73 "You know, I wish I could stay!" 00:25:23.76\00:25:25.39 Unfortunately, that's not home. 00:25:25.42\00:25:30.01 The Lifestyle Center is actually an artificial environment. 00:25:30.04\00:25:32.37 Right... and they gotta go. 00:25:32.40\00:25:33.48 People come there, they learn some things, 00:25:33.51\00:25:36.45 they experience things, but really, the PROOF, 00:25:36.48\00:25:39.61 and the RESULTS that they get is really when they 00:25:39.64\00:25:42.58 make that transition BACK to home. 00:25:42.61\00:25:44.80 They put the things that we have taught them into practice, 00:25:44.83\00:25:47.92 and they LIVE out a life that is FULLER AND RICHER 00:25:47.95\00:25:50.89 than they thought possible. 00:25:50.92\00:25:52.03 Well they have to go, but you get to STAY, 00:25:52.04\00:25:53.83 and it seems like you really enjoy what you do. 00:25:53.84\00:25:56.72 Well, I love people and I think God has called me 00:25:56.75\00:26:01.20 to be at the Lifestyle Center to minister to people, 00:26:01.23\00:26:04.15 and to help people in whatever way I can... 00:26:04.16\00:26:06.23 And you know, there's an old saying that goes like this... 00:26:06.26\00:26:09.06 "People don't care how much you know, 00:26:09.09\00:26:10.73 until they know how much you care" 00:26:10.76\00:26:12.79 ...And I care a lot about people, 00:26:12.82\00:26:14.48 and sometimes they tell me it shows. 00:26:14.51\00:26:16.50 Maybe some of those people are watching now that have been 00:26:16.51\00:26:18.60 through your program or maybe some people are 00:26:18.63\00:26:20.33 thinking about going through a similar program... 00:26:20.36\00:26:22.06 What would you have to say to them? 00:26:22.10\00:26:23.28 I would say, for those who have gone through already... 00:26:23.32\00:26:25.82 Please keep up the good habits! 00:26:25.85\00:26:29.00 Trust in God. He has shown us the way. 00:26:29.03\00:26:32.13 He will see you through. 00:26:32.16\00:26:34.12 Keep up the good work! 00:26:34.15\00:26:35.82 For those who are contemplating whether they should 00:26:35.85\00:26:38.12 change their lifestyle, that's the #1, 00:26:38.15\00:26:41.10 or whether you want to go to a lifestyle program or not, 00:26:41.11\00:26:43.32 is not really the issue. 00:26:43.35\00:26:44.64 But if you recognize that there are some aspects of your life 00:26:44.67\00:26:48.19 that you would REALLY benefit from by changing, by all means - 00:26:48.20\00:26:52.20 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 00:26:52.23\00:26:54.24 lean not to your own understanding, 00:26:54.27\00:26:56.47 In ALL your ways, acknowledge Him, 00:26:56.48\00:26:58.88 and HE will direct your path. 00:26:58.91\00:27:00.35 We've been talking to Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:27:00.38\00:27:04.29 He is the medical director at the Lifestyle Center of America 00:27:04.32\00:27:07.45 located in Oklahoma... actually in-between 00:27:07.48\00:27:10.02 Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth area. 00:27:10.05\00:27:13.78 And if you would like more information about that program, 00:27:13.81\00:27:16.08 you can contact the Lifestyle Center at their 00:27:16.11\00:27:18.93 web site which is www. lifestylecenter. org 00:27:18.96\00:27:24.67 Or you can contact us here at 3ABN, 00:27:24.70\00:27:28.07 and we can give you information and contact numbers for them. 00:27:28.10\00:27:31.69 They deal with the major illnesses that plague America, 00:27:31.72\00:27:34.66 heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or avoiding cancer, stroke, 00:27:34.67\00:27:38.43 obesity... these types of things. 00:27:38.46\00:27:40.84 And there is just a lot of wealth of information 00:27:40.87\00:27:43.83 that Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel has shared with us today 00:27:43.84\00:27:47.24 that we hope is helpful to you 00:27:47.27\00:27:49.34 whether or not you attend a Lifestyle Center program. 00:27:49.37\00:27:52.37 We know that as a result of putting these principles 00:27:52.40\00:27:55.20 into practice, you can and will have 00:27:55.23\00:27:56.89 health that lasts for a lifetime! 00:27:56.92\00:27:59.15
