Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:45.18\00:00:46.94 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:46.97\00:00:48.41 and today I'm delighted to have Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:00:48.44\00:00:51.74 with us... Welcome doctor! Thank you very much, Don 00:00:51.77\00:00:54.45 Now, I know that you're a doctor of internal medicine 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.64 which means that you just treat 00:00:57.67\00:00:59.45 diseases, not with surgical means, but you're a 00:00:59.48\00:01:02.30 medical doctor; you've worked in ICU, CCU, 00:01:02.33\00:01:05.40 all different types of intensive situations... Yes 00:01:05.43\00:01:07.87 But now, you're kind of focusing more on 00:01:07.90\00:01:09.64 "PREVENTIVE MEDICINE" 00:01:09.67\00:01:11.11 Yes, and lifestyle approaches to 00:01:11.14\00:01:14.11 treating diseases and preventing diseases. 00:01:14.14\00:01:16.19 What are some of the things that you see a lot of? 00:01:16.22\00:01:18.32 We see a lot of people with diabetes, heart disease, 00:01:18.35\00:01:22.17 high blood pressure, people who are overweight 00:01:22.20\00:01:24.53 and challenged by that, people with arthritis... 00:01:24.56\00:01:27.35 But the most of all focus at the Lifestyle Center 00:01:27.38\00:01:30.28 is on the first 4 things that I mentioned, 00:01:30.29\00:01:33.52 the diabetes in particular, along with heart disease, 00:01:33.53\00:01:36.87 high blood pressure and overweight. 00:01:36.90\00:01:39.03 Okay, if you are interested in getting in touch with 00:01:39.06\00:01:42.30 The Lifestyle Center of America, 00:01:42.33\00:01:43.63 or with Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:01:43.66\00:01:45.52 and the others on the staff there, 00:01:45.53\00:01:48.22 let me give you a web page that you can think of or remember. 00:01:48.25\00:01:52.77 It's very easy to remember, it's 00:01:52.80\00:01:53.89 www. lifestylecenter. org 00:01:53.92\00:02:01.72 And you can call about most of the information 00:02:01.75\00:02:04.51 about the Center on that, can't you? Yes 00:02:04.54\00:02:06.40 And then also, people can contact us here at 3ABN, 00:02:06.41\00:02:11.19 and we can let them know how to get in touch with you. 00:02:11.22\00:02:13.89 We want to talk today about what you've entitled... 00:02:13.90\00:02:16.61 "sweet-blood, sour-deal" What's that all about? 00:02:16.64\00:02:20.88 Well, part of the problem with diabetes is that 00:02:20.91\00:02:24.71 if you were to TASTE the blood or the urine of somebody with 00:02:24.74\00:02:29.91 HIGH blood sugar, hyperglycemia, it would be sweet. 00:02:29.94\00:02:33.81 It would be sweeter than it should be... however 00:02:33.82\00:02:36.56 I don't think we want to taste 00:02:36.60\00:02:37.75 the blood. No, we're not going to do that. 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.10 Didn't they used to taste their urine... 00:02:39.13\00:02:40.42 They used to taste urine in the past, that's correct. 00:02:40.45\00:02:42.13 See, a doctor's job has gotten a lot easier, hasn't it? 00:02:42.16\00:02:44.41 I would say so, in that respect! 00:02:44.42\00:02:47.44 At least a little bit more sanitary, right? 00:02:47.47\00:02:49.36 Okay, so with diabetes then there's too much sugar 00:02:49.39\00:02:53.16 then being spilled into the urine and too much in the blood. 00:02:53.19\00:02:55.42 Too much sugar in the blood and this is a sour deal, 00:02:55.45\00:02:57.98 because it affects just about 00:02:57.99\00:02:59.40 EVERY organ and every system in the body. 00:02:59.43\00:03:01.73 Let's just define then... 00:03:01.76\00:03:03.12 We've kind of defined already, 00:03:03.15\00:03:04.24 but what exactly is dia-betes? What does that mean? 00:03:04.27\00:03:08.26 Well, the old term "diabetes" came into existence because 00:03:08.30\00:03:13.11 first and foremost, diabetes means "siphon" 00:03:13.14\00:03:16.36 "mellitus" the whole word is "diabetes mellitus" 00:03:16.39\00:03:19.03 "mellitus" means honey-like. 00:03:19.06\00:03:21.43 So it was because the urine was sweet and because the 00:03:21.46\00:03:25.68 bees would go after urine from people who had diabetes, 00:03:25.71\00:03:28.94 it got that name. 00:03:28.97\00:03:30.91 "Siphon" of course, because the person would eat and drink 00:03:30.94\00:03:34.61 more than usual and they would 00:03:34.62\00:03:36.97 go the bathroom and urinate much more than usual as well. 00:03:37.00\00:03:39.95 So it was as if things were coming in, 00:03:39.98\00:03:43.04 and passing out like a siphon. 00:03:43.07\00:03:44.69 Polydipsia, polyuria, and polyphasia... 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.21 Yes, those are the "Greek" terms if you will... 3 P's - Right! 00:03:47.24\00:03:53.55 So diabetes then - are people really familiar with what it is 00:03:53.58\00:03:59.78 since it's a BIG killer in America? 00:03:59.79\00:04:01.44 Well you know, interestingly, we have some people who are 00:04:01.45\00:04:05.06 very knowledgeable about diabetes, 00:04:05.09\00:04:06.91 but we have also a large number 00:04:06.94\00:04:08.90 of people who are very unfamiliar. 00:04:08.93\00:04:11.04 They don't know very much about it; 00:04:11.07\00:04:12.51 they're just afraid of it. 00:04:12.54\00:04:13.55 I had one patient, not a patient actually, a person call up 00:04:13.58\00:04:18.05 at the center, desiring information, 00:04:18.08\00:04:21.07 and the person insisted that they talk to me about this 00:04:21.08\00:04:24.81 very important issue. 00:04:24.84\00:04:27.17 In trying to get at what the person's concern was, 00:04:27.18\00:04:30.43 she had a good friend who would carpool with them 00:04:30.46\00:04:36.39 ...that carpooled together, 00:04:36.42\00:04:37.66 and the friend recently had gotten the diagnosis of diabetes 00:04:37.69\00:04:44.97 This lady who was calling, had not seen her friend 00:04:45.00\00:04:48.14 in 6 weeks - she had avoided her for 6 weeks 00:04:48.17\00:04:50.46 because she was unsure as to whether this diabetes 00:04:50.49\00:04:54.86 could be passed on to her where there was a contagious disease. 00:04:54.89\00:04:58.16 Now this is probably the most 00:04:58.19\00:04:59.65 extreme question that I have received in a long time, 00:04:59.68\00:05:03.84 but what it says to me is that there are many people who 00:05:03.87\00:05:07.85 even if they have exposure to 00:05:07.88\00:05:10.11 people or friends or family members with diabetes, 00:05:10.14\00:05:12.83 may not know very much about it at all. 00:05:12.86\00:05:14.58 Right! So it's not an infectious contagious disease. It is not! 00:05:14.61\00:05:17.40 It's a disease that has to do with what we DO... 00:05:17.43\00:05:20.88 I mean, you can catch some habits that 00:05:20.91\00:05:22.50 ultimately could lead to it, 00:05:22.53\00:05:23.91 but it's not something you can get by someone 00:05:23.94\00:05:26.10 who has sneezed on you or something like that. Right 00:05:26.13\00:05:28.50 Now there's not only one kind 00:05:28.51\00:05:30.15 of diabetes, I ought to put that in here... 00:05:30.18\00:05:33.38 There are 2 major kinds; #1, we call type 1, 00:05:33.39\00:05:37.17 and the other one type 2. 00:05:37.20\00:05:38.53 Type 1 is the kind that is encountered most frequently 00:05:38.56\00:05:43.64 in folks who are younger, that is less than age 40. 00:05:43.67\00:05:47.62 It's usually associated with the obligatory use of insulin. 00:05:47.65\00:05:51.86 Whereas, type 2 diabetes tends to be in people who 00:05:51.87\00:05:56.35 are over age 45 and who, at the beginning 00:05:56.38\00:06:00.14 of their illness at least, don't need insulin at all. 00:06:00.17\00:06:03.54 Many of them are actually producing too much insulin, 00:06:03.57\00:06:05.91 and they're overweight! 00:06:05.94\00:06:07.57 Now what I hear is that with 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.28 even type 1, there's good news today. 00:06:09.31\00:06:11.16 I heard recently of a study that says, 00:06:11.20\00:06:13.02 they can go into the pancreas and actually put 00:06:13.05\00:06:16.09 new cells in there that can produce insulin - is that true? 00:06:16.12\00:06:18.92 That's not exactly the way you described it. 00:06:18.95\00:06:21.47 But they can harvest cells from cadavers, 00:06:21.50\00:06:24.17 that's people who have died, 00:06:24.20\00:06:26.08 take those cells out and inject them into people with 00:06:26.11\00:06:29.76 type 1 diabetes and they can set up a new population 00:06:29.77\00:06:35.05 of insulin-producing cells in that person 00:06:35.06\00:06:38.41 and use... Is it still experimental? 00:06:38.44\00:06:40.39 Well, it's not really experimental in the sense that 00:06:40.42\00:06:43.44 we've been doing this kind of thing now for several years. 00:06:43.47\00:06:46.19 But recently there was a breakthrough... 00:06:46.22\00:06:48.87 #1, in the harvesting technique 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.43 and the second, was that we're 00:06:50.46\00:06:52.94 now using antirejection medications 00:06:52.95\00:06:56.07 that are not steroids. 00:06:56.10\00:06:57.75 You see the steroids, themselves, 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.98 have a lot of side effects, 00:07:00.01\00:07:01.72 and one of the side effects of the steroids is 00:07:01.75\00:07:03.66 increasing the blood sugar. 00:07:03.69\00:07:04.90 So we're doing better with regard to 00:07:04.93\00:07:09.34 the techniques for harvesting, techniques for reimplantation 00:07:09.37\00:07:14.25 and techniques and medications 00:07:14.28\00:07:16.84 for putting the immune system at rest. 00:07:16.87\00:07:22.37 We have treatments after it happens but the best thing 00:07:22.40\00:07:24.81 by far is to avoid it if at all possible. 00:07:24.84\00:07:27.45 If at all possible and type 2 diabetes 00:07:27.48\00:07:30.34 is largely a preventable disease. 00:07:30.37\00:07:32.61 About 95% of the people who have diabetes 00:07:32.64\00:07:35.76 have type 2 diabetes. 00:07:35.79\00:07:37.71 There is a genetic component, 00:07:37.74\00:07:39.41 but the genes appear to just load the gun, so-to-speak. 00:07:39.44\00:07:44.61 How we live is what pulls the trigger. 00:07:44.64\00:07:48.52 But what about like say even type 1... 00:07:48.55\00:07:50.41 Let's say that you are a mother, you're carrying a child, 00:07:50.44\00:07:52.39 how can you make sure that your children don't get diabetes 00:07:52.42\00:07:55.54 or have diabetes? 00:07:55.57\00:07:57.55 Is it a large problem with children, 00:07:57.58\00:07:59.49 and how can we help them avoid even beginning life with it? 00:07:59.52\00:08:02.57 Well one of the things that we recognize is that 00:08:02.60\00:08:06.34 there is this genetic component for type 1 diabetes, 00:08:06.37\00:08:09.34 but there are some factors that predispose 00:08:09.37\00:08:13.34 a child who has the genetic tendency to GET type 1 diabetes. 00:08:13.35\00:08:19.31 There are some infections from viruses such as the mumps virus, 00:08:19.34\00:08:22.47 or Coxsackie virus which is another virus... 00:08:22.50\00:08:26.90 These 2 infections actually have been associated with 00:08:26.93\00:08:29.21 an increased risk of type 1 diabetes. 00:08:29.24\00:08:32.06 Additionally, there was 1 study very recently that showed 00:08:32.07\00:08:35.51 early vaccinations with hepatitis B vaccine 00:08:35.54\00:08:38.76 may be associated with development of type 1 diabetes. 00:08:38.77\00:08:42.95 So careful about when you get this. 00:08:42.98\00:08:44.49 ...About when you get the vaccination. 00:08:44.52\00:08:45.89 Additionally, we have the connection between 00:08:45.92\00:08:49.31 type 1 diabetes and cow's milk consumption. 00:08:49.34\00:08:53.03 In this association, what we find is that there is, 00:08:53.06\00:08:58.15 epidemiologically... that's if you look at populations, 00:08:58.18\00:09:00.47 there is an association between the use of cow's milk 00:09:00.48\00:09:03.99 and the development of type 1 diabetes... 00:09:04.02\00:09:06.61 And the individuals with the type 1 diabetes 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.61 seem to have antibodies against one of the cow's milk proteins. 00:09:08.64\00:09:15.55 Fights against their own pancreas... Yes 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.04 So, there are things we can do before children are even born, 00:09:18.38\00:09:21.22 and certainly afterwards in terms of this area 00:09:21.25\00:09:23.96 of cow's milk and different things. Yes 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.59 Okay, then let's say though we have developed it... 00:09:25.62\00:09:28.87 Let's say that early-on in age, someone develops it 00:09:28.90\00:09:33.31 and it's type 2 we're talking about now, if that's the case... 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.25 What can we do... well maybe this is the way to put it - 00:09:36.28\00:09:39.00 What are other risk factors that have to do with diabetes? 00:09:39.01\00:09:42.98 For type 2 diabetes, the risk factors include: 00:09:43.01\00:09:45.80 Your age - if you are over 45, you have an increased risk. 00:09:45.83\00:09:49.56 There you are! 00:09:49.59\00:09:52.01 I'm no where even near that! 00:09:52.04\00:09:53.66 If you're overweight, you have an increased risk. 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.05 If you have high blood pressure, you have an increased risk. 00:09:56.08\00:09:57.98 If you have a first degree family member... 00:09:58.01\00:10:00.70 that is mother, father, sister brother, 00:10:00.73\00:10:03.02 if they have type 2 diabetes, then you have 00:10:03.05\00:10:04.82 an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. 00:10:04.85\00:10:06.08 Goes to uncles and aunts? Yes it does, 00:10:06.11\00:10:08.00 but that association is less strong than the 00:10:08.03\00:10:11.42 first degree family member. 00:10:11.45\00:10:13.62 Additionally, for a woman, if she had diabetes while she was 00:10:13.63\00:10:17.93 pregnant, she has increased risk of developing 00:10:17.96\00:10:20.38 diabetes later on and the child apparently has an 00:10:20.41\00:10:22.96 increased risk of developing diabetes during its life. 00:10:22.97\00:10:25.19 Gestational diabetes, so-called. 00:10:25.20\00:10:26.58 Gestational diabetes for the mother. 00:10:26.61\00:10:28.56 But it doesn't even have to be gestational diabetes per se 00:10:28.59\00:10:31.18 in that if the mother, while she was pregnant, 00:10:31.21\00:10:34.14 actually when she delivered, the baby was over 9 pounds, 00:10:34.17\00:10:38.87 she has an increased risk of developing diabetes, 00:10:38.88\00:10:41.11 and the child probably has an increased risk as well. 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.17 So the weight of the baby at the time of birth, 00:10:43.20\00:10:47.25 over 9 pounds, is an indicator that the mother 00:10:47.28\00:10:50.27 would have increased risk later on. 00:10:50.30\00:10:52.64 So mothers shouldn't be out there eating anything 00:10:52.67\00:10:54.24 they want to eat and feeding their sweet-tooth. 00:10:54.27\00:10:57.06 That's correct... because if what it means is that they 00:10:57.09\00:11:01.35 push themselves over the edge if they have a predilection to 00:11:01.38\00:11:04.31 developing diabetes in the first place, 00:11:04.34\00:11:06.38 and the extra weight and other factors push them over the edge 00:11:06.41\00:11:10.03 such that their blood sugar goes up during pregnancy, 00:11:10.06\00:11:12.55 well, this would not be a good thing for the 00:11:12.58\00:11:15.63 mother or for the baby. 00:11:15.64\00:11:18.20 Other risk factors? 00:11:18.23\00:11:19.72 Those are about the major ones. 00:11:19.75\00:11:21.32 People who smoke have an increased risk of 00:11:21.35\00:11:23.25 insulin resistance. 00:11:23.28\00:11:24.56 We mentioned being overweight, 00:11:24.59\00:11:26.21 and, of course, there are some ethnic factors. 00:11:26.24\00:11:28.80 There's this problem or this process of insulin resistance 00:11:28.83\00:11:33.77 that our genes and our ethnicity seem to carry. 00:11:33.80\00:11:37.61 The people of Native American descent, 00:11:37.64\00:11:41.31 or if you have Native American blood, in this country 00:11:41.34\00:11:43.94 you probably have the highest 00:11:43.95\00:11:45.08 risk of having insulin resistance. 00:11:45.11\00:11:47.60 But then, that is followed by people of Hispanic origin 00:11:47.63\00:11:51.66 regardless of what race they might be... 00:11:51.69\00:11:53.50 and then that's followed by people of African origin, 00:11:53.53\00:11:56.54 and then Asian-Pacific and Asian-Island, 00:11:56.57\00:12:01.20 as they have the next highest risk, 00:12:01.23\00:12:03.77 followed by people of European ancestry. 00:12:03.80\00:12:06.95 Oh, so this is for insulin resistance... 00:12:06.98\00:12:08.77 It's not that the body is not MAKING insulin, 00:12:08.78\00:12:10.77 but that it just can't get in the cell. 00:12:10.78\00:12:12.68 Well, the body is making insulin... you're right, 00:12:12.69\00:12:15.58 but you need more insulin to produce the same effect 00:12:15.61\00:12:19.88 if you are insulin-resistant than if you were normal. 00:12:19.91\00:12:23.58 Okay, so it does really 00:12:24.06\00:12:25.06 Okay, so it does really matter who you are. 00:12:25.09\00:12:26.49 Now, diabetes, is it a real BAD disease? 00:12:26.52\00:12:29.37 What does it do to your system? 00:12:29.40\00:12:30.67 What does it do to your body? 00:12:30.70\00:12:31.77 What does it do to your organs? 00:12:31.80\00:12:33.04 What does it do to your... 00:12:33.07\00:12:34.50 In a nutshell, people with diabetes AGE a lot faster 00:12:34.53\00:12:38.75 than someone without diabetes. 00:12:38.78\00:12:40.81 So ALL of the degenerative processes that you can think of 00:12:40.84\00:12:44.68 are probably going to be affected by the fact that 00:12:44.71\00:12:48.38 you have high sugar in your blood and diabetes. WHY? 00:12:48.41\00:12:51.20 Part of it is related to what we call... 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.51 "glycosylation end products" 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.21 Now, I know you... Glycosylation end products! 00:12:55.22\00:12:58.40 I'm going to use that now every time I go out. 00:12:58.43\00:13:02.64 The thing is... the sugar attaches to our proteins, 00:13:02.67\00:13:05.97 and it causes the proteins to not have the same flexibility 00:13:06.00\00:13:09.28 and the same ability that the proteins otherwise would. 00:13:09.31\00:13:12.01 THAT causes premature aging of just about every tissue. 00:13:12.04\00:13:16.00 So if it affects the eyes, for instance, 00:13:16.03\00:13:18.96 we have an increased risk of what we call retinopathy 00:13:18.99\00:13:21.42 or we also have an increased risk of cataract formation... 00:13:21.45\00:13:25.79 by different mechanisms by the way, 00:13:25.82\00:13:27.79 and we also have an increased risk of having glaucoma... 00:13:27.82\00:13:31.56 all of which are related to the fact that you have diabetes. 00:13:31.59\00:13:34.82 It can affect the nervous system; 00:13:34.85\00:13:36.61 you can end up with peripheral neuropathy... 00:13:36.64\00:13:39.27 Where you can't feel things, touch things... Where you can't 00:13:39.30\00:13:40.59 feel things or you have pain in the legs, 00:13:40.62\00:13:42.65 or numbness, tingling. 00:13:42.68\00:13:43.79 It can affect the feet, the hands; 00:13:43.82\00:13:45.32 it can affect one side of the body; 00:13:45.35\00:13:47.17 it can affect the abdomen, 00:13:47.20\00:13:48.39 as well as it can affect the internal organs 00:13:48.42\00:13:51.09 such as the heart and the gastrointestinal tract. 00:13:51.12\00:13:54.05 Does it do anything to your mind? 00:13:54.08\00:13:55.17 There is a process that we call "diabetic dementia" 00:13:55.20\00:14:00.36 People who have had poorly controlled blood sugars 00:14:00.39\00:14:03.15 over a period of time, they can end up with 00:14:03.18\00:14:05.49 dementing illnesses much like Alzheimer disease. 00:14:05.52\00:14:08.07 Also in people who are prone to having frequent bouts of 00:14:08.10\00:14:11.01 hypoglycemia. 00:14:11.04\00:14:12.35 If the blood sugar stays too low for too long, 00:14:12.38\00:14:15.86 these individuals can end up 00:14:15.89\00:14:17.70 with some irreversible brain damage. 00:14:17.73\00:14:20.39 We're talking with Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:14:20.42\00:14:23.09 We're talking about diabetes. 00:14:23.12\00:14:24.32 If you have it or know someone that does, 00:14:24.35\00:14:25.97 you might want to give them a call 00:14:26.00\00:14:27.16 and have them tune in when we come back. 00:14:27.19\00:14:30.00 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:14:31.44\00:14:33.10 shed a few pounds? 00:14:33.13\00:14:34.66 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:14:34.69\00:14:36.77 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off 00:14:36.80\00:14:39.72 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:14:39.75\00:14:42.62 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:14:42.65\00:14:45.52 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:45.55\00:14:48.37 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:14:48.40\00:14:50.36 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:50.39\00:14:52.85 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:14:52.86\00:14:55.52 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:55.55\00:14:58.24 by thousands who are able to eat more and lose weight 00:14:58.27\00:15:01.34 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:15:01.37\00:15:04.26 through lifestyle medicine. 00:15:04.29\00:15:05.92 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN, 00:15:05.95\00:15:09.47 and in this booklet, they present a sensible approach 00:15:09.50\00:15:12.43 to eating, nutrition and lifestyle changes 00:15:12.46\00:15:14.98 than can help you prevent heart disease, diabetes 00:15:15.01\00:15:17.44 and EVEN cancer. 00:15:17.47\00:15:18.78 Call or write today for your free copy of... 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.00 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:21.03\00:15:22.71 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:15:22.74\00:15:26.21 It's ABSOLUTELY free of charge, so call or write today. 00:15:26.24\00:15:30.64 Welcome back! " 00:18:04.80\00:18:06.38 Because it's not just like taking a pill to put a band aid 00:18:06.41\00:18:09.52 over a cut... Or a shot to take care of the problem. 00:18:09.55\00:18:13.03 It's HOW you live that's going to determine, to a large extent, 00:18:13.06\00:18:16.00 particularly when we find people who are 00:18:16.03\00:18:18.31 early in the course of their disease, 00:18:18.34\00:18:20.00 or who are at the brink of kind of going over the fence 00:18:20.03\00:18:24.83 to full-blown diabetes, then these individuals 00:18:24.86\00:18:27.80 are MOST able to be helped with their lifestyle 00:18:27.83\00:18:29.90 even though EVERYBODY with diabetes, including 00:18:29.93\00:18:32.09 type 1 diabetes, can be helped by changing their lifestyle. 00:18:32.10\00:18:35.16 Now, a very important component is, of course, the food aspect. 00:18:35.19\00:18:39.74 Here are some of the issues with regard to food... 00:18:39.77\00:18:42.04 First and foremost, carbohydrates, 00:18:42.07\00:18:45.10 despite the hype that we might read from time to time 00:18:45.13\00:18:48.80 that carbohydrates are a bad thing for people with diabetes 00:18:48.83\00:18:53.19 and for people with weight problems and so on... 00:18:53.22\00:18:54.97 This is really not fully the case. 00:18:55.00\00:18:58.36 While people can be helped by 00:18:58.39\00:18:59.88 other kinds of dietary programs, 00:18:59.91\00:19:01.80 having a diet that is rich in fiber, 00:19:01.83\00:19:07.37 rich in complex carbohydrates. 00:19:07.40\00:19:10.61 This IS actually the mainstay of the treatment of diabetes, 00:19:10.64\00:19:14.49 and it allows for such things to occur as people taking 00:19:14.52\00:19:19.15 LOTS and LOTS of insulin, large doses of insulin, 00:19:19.18\00:19:22.21 100, 200, 300 units of insulin a day 00:19:22.24\00:19:24.76 coming down to ZERO units of insulin a day 00:19:24.79\00:19:28.29 with BETTER blood sugar control 00:19:28.32\00:19:30.04 by just making some little changes in this area. 00:19:30.07\00:19:32.25 So complex carbohydrates - what would those be? 00:19:32.28\00:19:34.71 If I have a choice between 00:19:34.74\00:19:36.08 apples and apple juice, which should I have? 00:19:36.12\00:19:37.89 Well, you should have the whole apple! 00:19:37.93\00:19:39.65 The way I put it, is when it comes to fruits, 00:19:39.69\00:19:41.97 fruits are GOOD. 00:19:42.00\00:19:43.66 Some people are more sensitive to 00:19:43.69\00:19:45.00 one kind of fruit or another, 00:19:45.03\00:19:46.43 but if you're looking at fruits, concentrated fruits, 00:19:46.46\00:19:50.32 fruit juices, etcetera, the rule of thumb is the fruit, 00:19:50.33\00:19:53.26 the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit! 00:19:53.29\00:19:56.28 That works out best! 00:19:56.29\00:19:57.34 The fruit, the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit! 00:19:57.37\00:19:58.97 Okay, so in other words, because if it's a liquid form 00:19:58.98\00:20:02.82 or whatever, it drives the blood sugar up higher... 00:20:02.85\00:20:06.66 And even if the person responds appropriately, 00:20:06.70\00:20:09.34 and produces a good output of insulin, 00:20:09.37\00:20:11.94 then they tend to go LOWER than they should, 00:20:11.97\00:20:15.00 and the person gets hungry and they want to eat more. 00:20:15.03\00:20:18.18 So the issue of food is a very important one with diabetes. 00:20:18.21\00:20:21.90 The one issue is, of course, the carbohydrate content. 00:20:21.93\00:20:24.49 The other major issue is actually the content of FAT. 00:20:24.52\00:20:28.64 If people have a lot of saturated fat in their diet, 00:20:28.67\00:20:31.42 they are increasing their own resistance to insulin. 00:20:31.43\00:20:36.57 How does that work? 00:20:36.60\00:20:37.59 How it works is - essentially think of the fat as 00:20:37.62\00:20:40.06 clogging up the works inside the cell. 00:20:40.09\00:20:42.38 Now, scientists around the world are actually 00:20:42.41\00:20:44.57 looking at what these mechanisms are... 00:20:44.60\00:20:46.39 How does saturated fat actually do this? 00:20:46.42\00:20:48.57 And, we have some exciting lines of inquiry going on... 00:20:48.60\00:20:53.26 But suffice it to say, most people don't need to 00:20:53.29\00:20:55.54 know all of the details of how this works. 00:20:55.55\00:20:58.00 They need to know that sat-fat is BAD-fat. 00:20:58.03\00:21:01.64 Sat-fat is BAD-fat! See how easy that is? 00:21:01.67\00:21:04.10 The whole fruit and nothing but the fruit. 00:21:04.13\00:21:07.17 Right, the fruit, the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.37 And sat-fat is bad-fat. That's right! 00:21:09.40\00:21:10.61 Simple things! 00:21:10.64\00:21:11.95 Moving along to cholesterol... 00:21:11.98\00:21:15.89 You see, most people with diabetes end up dying 00:21:15.92\00:21:19.31 not because of the high blood sugar... 00:21:19.34\00:21:21.26 They end up dying because of cardiovascular complications. 00:21:21.29\00:21:24.35 They end up with a heart attack or stroke, 00:21:24.38\00:21:26.13 or some combination of these things. 00:21:26.16\00:21:27.41 Because ALL their arteries and vessels are shot. Exactly! 00:21:27.44\00:21:30.11 SO, we want to be able to 00:21:30.14\00:21:32.84 PREVENT some of the complications, 00:21:32.87\00:21:34.35 some of the vascular complications of diabetes. 00:21:34.38\00:21:37.83 So, we would want to limit the amount of 00:21:37.86\00:21:40.12 cholesterol and certainly the amount of 00:21:40.16\00:21:41.41 oxidized cholesterol that the person would get. 00:21:41.44\00:21:43.71 But doctor, this sounds no fun. 00:21:43.74\00:21:45.06 What about all my good foods I like to eat? 00:21:45.09\00:21:46.73 Well, we have to look at what you're calling good foods. 00:21:46.76\00:21:49.93 Because, we have been sold a bill of goods, so-to-speak, 00:21:49.96\00:21:54.72 and it's that sweet-blood sour-deal 00:21:54.75\00:21:57.13 We've been sold a bill of goods... 00:21:57.16\00:21:58.95 If you were to ask someone what are the "goodies" 00:21:58.98\00:22:02.47 that they eat, they'll tell you all of the things 00:22:02.48\00:22:04.80 that actually cause a lot of disease and actually 00:22:04.83\00:22:07.18 produce a lot of suffering in 00:22:07.21\00:22:09.23 the United States and around the world. 00:22:09.26\00:22:11.69 We call them "goodies" 00:22:11.72\00:22:13.30 Well, no, really they should be BADDIES! 00:22:13.33\00:22:16.73 These baddies such as the high sugar, the high saturated fat, 00:22:16.76\00:22:20.07 the high cholesterol, the rich calorie-laden empty foods... 00:22:20.10\00:22:26.57 Well these things AREN'T any good for us. 00:22:26.58\00:22:29.48 Now, does that mean that the way you eat to be healthy, 00:22:29.51\00:22:34.02 needs to be tasteless and joyless? 00:22:34.03\00:22:36.36 The answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT! 00:22:36.39\00:22:38.30 You know, what we have found at the Lifestyle Center, 00:22:38.33\00:22:41.33 and what people know from just their existence... 00:22:41.34\00:22:44.31 if the food doesn't look good, 00:22:44.34\00:22:45.71 if it doesn't taste good, if it doesn't smell good, 00:22:45.75\00:22:47.76 if it doesn't seem as if it's going to be good... 00:22:47.79\00:22:49.77 Probably is not good... 00:22:49.80\00:22:51.07 Probably is not good, people are not going to eat it. 00:22:51.10\00:22:53.25 So, a wide variety of fruits, grains, vegetables, 00:22:53.28\00:22:57.01 legumes and nuts, WELL-PREPARED... 00:22:57.04\00:23:00.37 some raw, some cooked, some prepared in various fashions... 00:23:00.40\00:23:03.53 These things actually present to the individual the BEST choice 00:23:03.56\00:23:09.44 in terms of food and nutrition for the treatment 00:23:09.47\00:23:12.78 of diabetes and for the prevention of diabetes 00:23:12.81\00:23:15.19 and also for the prevention of the complications of diabetes. 00:23:15.22\00:23:18.02 SO, you give them cookbooks, you give them different things 00:23:18.05\00:23:21.29 that they can use there. That's correct 00:23:21.30\00:23:23.11 And you show them how to do it? We show them how to do them. 00:23:23.14\00:23:24.22 We have a cooking school, cooking classes that 00:23:25.06\00:23:28.60 are conducted 5 days a week 00:23:28.63\00:23:30.63 while they are there. What if they can't get there? 00:23:30.67\00:23:32.56 What if they have... 00:23:32.59\00:23:34.24 Well you know, around the country various organizations 00:23:34.27\00:23:37.23 and various people have cooking schools that they 00:23:37.24\00:23:40.05 might put on either in public buildings or at churches 00:23:40.08\00:23:44.53 and synagogues around the country that teach people 00:23:44.56\00:23:47.22 how to prepare meals for people with diabetes. 00:23:47.25\00:23:49.56 Now here's the thing, there IS no "diabetic diet" 00:23:49.59\00:23:54.35 REALLY, a person with diabetes needs to have a GOOD diet 00:23:54.38\00:23:59.09 and that same good wholesome diet is actually 00:23:59.10\00:24:03.05 the same good wholesome diet for ANY and EVERYBODY. 00:24:03.08\00:24:06.59 So there's only one right answer. That's correct! 00:24:06.62\00:24:09.20 And that's food as grown. Foods as grown... 00:24:09.23\00:24:12.66 You see, you have the whole system... 00:24:12.69\00:24:15.07 If it doesn't grow on a tree, 00:24:15.10\00:24:16.48 you have to come up with a better answer. Right? 00:24:16.51\00:24:19.60 The refined foods tend to cause the blood sugar to go HIGHER 00:24:19.61\00:24:25.45 than the foods the way God made them. 00:24:25.48\00:24:30.99 I have a long family history of diabetes in my family, 00:24:31.02\00:24:35.92 none in my nuclear family, but my uncles, great uncles, 00:24:35.95\00:24:39.25 and grandfather and different things on one side, 00:24:39.28\00:24:42.32 that family seems to have a lot. 00:24:42.35\00:24:44.53 Some of my relatives and some others I've met before, 00:24:44.54\00:24:47.60 they are not out of the ordinary, 00:24:47.63\00:24:50.06 have actually said, "Well, I don't even want to KNOW 00:24:50.09\00:24:52.68 whether or not I have it and they just don't even... 00:24:52.69\00:24:54.74 they act like they don't have it 00:24:54.77\00:24:56.28 regardless of if they do or don't. 00:24:57.07\00:24:58.54 Is this a good idea or a plan or why not? 00:24:58.57\00:25:01.32 That's not a good plan. 00:25:01.35\00:25:02.78 You know what it's like? 00:25:02.81\00:25:04.02 It's like sitting on the railroad track, 00:25:04.05\00:25:06.71 hearing someone tell you that at 6:30 there is a speeding 00:25:06.74\00:25:11.03 train that's going to come down the track... 00:25:11.06\00:25:12.76 And you look around... it's now 6:25, 00:25:12.79\00:25:15.23 you say, "I don't see anything, I don't hear anything, 00:25:15.26\00:25:17.42 I'm going to sit here, I'm going to just be here. " 00:25:17.45\00:25:20.82 "If it comes, it comes" 00:25:20.85\00:25:22.57 Now does that sound like a smart thing to do? No 00:25:22.60\00:25:25.43 No, because at 6:30, what's going to happen? 00:25:25.46\00:25:28.04 SPLAT! All right 00:25:28.07\00:25:30.46 Now, the issue with diabetes, the GOOD news is that 00:25:30.49\00:25:33.79 diabetes, in LARGE part, can be avoided. 00:25:33.82\00:25:37.09 So someone who has a risk, a high risk of developing 00:25:37.12\00:25:41.13 diabetes, really should be paying much more attention 00:25:41.16\00:25:44.78 to living a more optimal life to avoid the diabetes 00:25:44.81\00:25:47.73 and avoid the complications and avoid the NEEDLESS suffering 00:25:47.76\00:25:51.65 that they will have because of it. 00:25:51.68\00:25:52.98 Now diabetes does not just affect the person, 00:25:53.01\00:25:56.06 diabetes affects the family! 00:25:56.09\00:25:58.97 Many people don't understand this... 00:25:59.00\00:26:01.29 What they think is... "Well, I'm the master of 00:26:01.32\00:26:03.69 my own destiny here, see I can do whatever I want, 00:26:03.72\00:26:06.64 and everything is fine.
