Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:44.76\00:00:46.98 I'm glad that you've joined us today and I'm also glad that 00:00:47.01\00:00:50.31 Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel is with us. 00:00:50.34\00:00:52.23 Welcome, Doctor. 00:00:52.26\00:00:53.64 Thank you, it's good to be here. 00:00:53.67\00:00:55.18 We're going to be talking today about a subject that really 00:00:55.21\00:00:59.03 touches the lives of many Americans, 00:00:59.06\00:01:01.50 that being heart disease. 00:01:01.53\00:01:02.88 And heart disease, I believe, is the number one 00:01:02.91\00:01:05.11 killer in America, is that right? 00:01:05.14\00:01:06.11 It is the number one killer, that is correct. 00:01:06.12\00:01:07.96 But today you're probably saying "We've heard a lot about 00:01:07.99\00:01:09.28 heart disease. " 00:01:09.31\00:01:10.28 Not today's program you haven't heard about! 00:01:10.29\00:01:13.00 Because we're going to be talking about heart disease and 00:01:13.03\00:01:16.42 little known factors that relate to heart disease. 00:01:16.45\00:01:19.17 We're going to review some of the regular ones but we're going 00:01:19.20\00:01:21.61 to look at some little known ones and it will be well worth 00:01:21.64\00:01:23.95 your while to stay. 00:01:23.98\00:01:24.95 Now if you're watching today and you need to have information 00:01:24.96\00:01:27.30 about how to get a hold of the Lifestyle Center of America 00:01:27.33\00:01:30.16 one of the best ways is over the internet - 00:01:30.19\00:01:33.00 www. lifestylecenter. org or you can call us here at 00:01:33.03\00:01:40.69 Three Angels Broadcasting Network and we can give you 00:01:40.72\00:01:43.80 the contact information over the phone. 00:01:43.83\00:01:45.13 But that's fairly easy to remember - lifestyle center. 00:01:45.16\00:01:49.05 You treat heart disease there as it relates to lifestyle. 00:01:49.08\00:01:52.75 Isn't that right? 00:01:52.79\00:01:53.76 That's correct. 00:01:53.77\00:01:54.74 And we have the principle of working with first things first. 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.20 So lifestyle is very important in preventing and in treating 00:01:57.23\00:02:01.79 heart disease - particularly the atherosclerotic heart disease 00:02:01.82\00:02:05.47 which is the kind that is responsible for most of the 00:02:05.50\00:02:09.31 death in this country. 00:02:09.34\00:02:11.75 So you are a doctor of internal medicine, that means you deal 00:02:11.78\00:02:14.39 with a lot of patients that are very acute situations, ICU or 00:02:14.42\00:02:18.69 intensive care, or cardiac care units, in hospital settings, 00:02:18.72\00:02:23.19 those types of things. 00:02:23.22\00:02:24.19 Then you also do things that can help people avoid that. 00:02:24.22\00:02:27.29 And the thing that has come up recently, probably within 00:02:27.32\00:02:29.97 the last 40 years or so has been this whole idea of 00:02:30.00\00:02:33.85 risk factors. 00:02:33.88\00:02:34.85 What is a risk factor and what are the common risk factors 00:02:34.86\00:02:37.22 for heart disease? 00:02:37.25\00:02:38.32 A risk factor is just some thing or some attribute that a person 00:02:38.35\00:02:41.60 may have or maybe in contact with that increases the person's 00:02:41.63\00:02:45.90 likelihood of getting a disease or getting a condition. 00:02:45.93\00:02:49.44 The typical risk factors that most people would already be 00:02:49.47\00:02:53.00 familiar with for heart disease include things like: 00:02:53.03\00:02:57.13 cigarette smoking, lack of exercise or what I call 00:02:57.16\00:02:59.80 slothfulness, high cholesterol, some of their family history, 00:02:59.83\00:03:06.81 so if they have a parent or a brother or sister who has 00:03:06.84\00:03:11.05 premature heart disease then they are at increased risk 00:03:11.08\00:03:14.08 for having heart disease as well, obesity, diabetes, 00:03:14.11\00:03:17.37 high blood pressure. 00:03:17.40\00:03:18.37 These are all typical risk factors. 00:03:18.40\00:03:21.09 How many risk factors do you know of? 00:03:21.12\00:03:23.33 Someone told me there was over than 20 now that they have 00:03:23.36\00:03:25.41 identified. 00:03:25.44\00:03:26.41 Actually there are over 20. 00:03:26.42\00:03:27.80 Some of them are major risk factors and some are 00:03:27.83\00:03:30.34 minor risk factors. 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.79 What I would like to do today is to talk a little bit about 00:03:31.82\00:03:36.16 some of the less well known but still very important 00:03:36.19\00:03:39.13 risk factors. 00:03:39.16\00:03:40.13 Well, let's talk about those. 00:03:40.14\00:03:41.11 What are some of the less known but very important risk factors? 00:03:41.12\00:03:44.08 One of them is homocysteine and that we could have one or two 00:03:44.11\00:03:49.07 programs just talking about that. 00:03:49.10\00:03:50.39 But high homocysteine levels in the blood is a risk factor 00:03:50.42\00:03:55.21 for heart disease. 00:03:55.24\00:03:56.23 This was known around the same time that cholesterol was coming 00:03:56.26\00:03:59.31 on the picture, on the screen. 00:03:59.34\00:04:01.66 But cholesterol kind of eclipsed the homocysteine stuff and 00:04:01.69\00:04:07.28 that didn't reemerge as a serious problem until just a 00:04:07.31\00:04:11.67 few years ago. 00:04:11.70\00:04:12.67 None the less homocysteine is an amino acid or one of the 00:04:12.68\00:04:15.83 building blocks of the proteins that can build up in our blood 00:04:15.86\00:04:19.74 and it is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks 00:04:19.77\00:04:23.33 and of strokes. 00:04:23.36\00:04:24.77 So what does it do? 00:04:24.80\00:04:25.77 Your homocysteine is in your blood and it's cruising around 00:04:25.78\00:04:28.19 in it's little car - what does it do? 00:04:28.22\00:04:29.96 Does it slam into the wall, break the windows, got a 00:04:29.99\00:04:33.22 sledge hammer in it's hand - what does it do? 00:04:33.25\00:04:35.03 As far as we can tell, what it does it irritates the lining 00:04:35.06\00:04:38.27 of the blood vessel walls and penetrates the blood vessel 00:04:38.30\00:04:42.47 wall to set up a reaction in there. 00:04:42.50\00:04:44.89 And that reaction then is an atherosclerotic reaction or 00:04:44.92\00:04:49.06 it develops a plaque. 00:04:49.09\00:04:51.00 That plaque then can rupture and cause a stroke if it's one 00:04:51.03\00:04:54.71 of the arteries in the neck or in the brain or if the artery is 00:04:54.74\00:04:59.24 is in the heart then it can cause heart attack. 00:04:59.27\00:05:01.92 So are there like foods that we eat that are high in 00:05:01.95\00:05:04.78 homocysteine or what is it that causes it to elevate? 00:05:04.81\00:05:07.73 There are some foods that are high in another amino acid 00:05:07.76\00:05:10.60 that then leads to homocysteine being high. 00:05:10.63\00:05:12.93 Those foods are foods that are high in the 00:05:12.96\00:05:16.49 amino acid methionine 00:05:16.52\00:05:18.11 Now methionine is found abundantly in foods of animal 00:05:18.14\00:05:23.13 origin or flesh foods - so meats, milk, cheese, and eggs - 00:05:23.16\00:05:27.53 they tend to be higher in methionine than foods of 00:05:27.56\00:05:31.76 plant based. 00:05:31.79\00:05:32.92 Now that's the methionine side. 00:05:32.95\00:05:35.05 But there are some other factors such as lack of some of their 00:05:35.08\00:05:39.72 vitamins like vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid. 00:05:39.75\00:05:42.96 If you don't have this in your diet or it's not adequate in 00:05:42.99\00:05:47.20 the diet, then that can lead to an accumulation of the 00:05:47.23\00:05:50.64 homocysteine which is produced by the methionine. 00:05:50.67\00:05:53.86 Ok, so let's talk about that a minute. 00:05:53.89\00:05:55.46 The B12 then being something that many times we hear 00:05:55.49\00:05:58.74 vegetarians don't get enough of are those who are on 00:05:58.77\00:06:00.89 plant based foods. 00:06:00.92\00:06:01.89 Does that mean they are at more risk for their homocysteine 00:06:01.90\00:06:04.42 going up? 00:06:04.45\00:06:05.42 Some people it would be if they absolutely aren't getting 00:06:05.43\00:06:10.01 vitamin B12 enough in their diet and not supplementing it either. 00:06:10.04\00:06:14.26 Those people would be at increased risk of having higher 00:06:14.29\00:06:17.04 homocysteine levels. 00:06:17.07\00:06:18.04 What people usually don't realize is that the body 00:06:18.05\00:06:21.70 does not make vitamin B12. 00:06:21.73\00:06:23.59 Animals don't make vitamin B12. 00:06:23.62\00:06:26.50 We have to get vitamin B12 from something that we ingest. 00:06:26.53\00:06:29.70 For people who eat meat, when they eat the meat they get the 00:06:29.73\00:06:33.34 vitamin B12 from the meat or they drink milk and they get 00:06:33.37\00:06:35.33 it that way. 00:06:35.36\00:06:36.33 For people who are total vegetarians the best way 00:06:36.34\00:06:42.56 to get it is to supplement it in the diet using one of these 00:06:42.59\00:06:46.63 little easily available supplements that will be 00:06:46.66\00:06:49.88 dissolved in the mouth. 00:06:49.91\00:06:50.88 So like a B complex vitamin? 00:06:50.89\00:06:54.68 Actually I don't recommend using B complex vitamins because 00:06:54.71\00:07:00.28 those are usually in pills that people swallow. 00:07:00.31\00:07:02.15 B12 to be most effective ought to be best 00:07:02.18\00:07:06.37 dissolved in the mouth. 00:07:06.40\00:07:08.35 So there are B12 preparations either liquids, some are sprays 00:07:08.38\00:07:12.94 or some are just these little dots that you can crush, and 00:07:12.97\00:07:16.52 the amount that you need is really very small, 00:07:16.55\00:07:18.56 very little bit. 00:07:18.59\00:07:19.56 It's. 1 micro grams per day somebody needs and that's 00:07:19.57\00:07:22.30 a really small amount. 00:07:22.33\00:07:23.56 One of the ways that I tell patients that they can take this 00:07:23.59\00:07:26.55 is to get some B12 supplement, crush it, keep it in a little 00:07:26.58\00:07:30.51 vile on the dining table or kitchen counter and once a day 00:07:30.54\00:07:37.37 take a clean toothpick, stick it into this crushed tablet, 00:07:37.40\00:07:43.03 whatever is stuck on the toothpick that's about how much 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.96 you need for the day. 00:07:45.99\00:07:46.96 And then of course you discard the toothpick. 00:07:46.99\00:07:49.17 What about these other substitute milks and different 00:07:49.20\00:07:54.22 things that have B12 in them? 00:07:54.25\00:07:55.89 If they have the B12 supplemented then of course 00:07:55.92\00:07:58.43 that's a way to get it as well. 00:07:58.46\00:08:00.04 Now, just a question, and we're asking because it relates to 00:08:00.07\00:08:03.77 homocysteine. 00:08:03.80\00:08:04.98 Because if you're low in that then that elevates, like you 00:08:05.01\00:08:08.24 mentioned, in the blood stream. 00:08:08.27\00:08:10.20 Where do the animals get their vitamin B12? 00:08:10.23\00:08:13.06 They get their vitamin B12 from the bacteria that they have or 00:08:13.09\00:08:18.73 if it's a carnivorous animal it will get it from animals 00:08:18.76\00:08:22.36 that it eats. 00:08:22.39\00:08:23.36 Ok, just wondered where they got that. 00:08:23.37\00:08:26.50 So, homocysteine then needs to be low. 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.63 Do you at the Lifestyle Center of America 00:08:28.66\00:08:31.60 check for homocysteine? 00:08:31.63\00:08:33.15 We check just about every patient that comes through our 00:08:33.18\00:08:35.86 center who is at risk for a coronary artery disease or 00:08:35.89\00:08:38.97 atherosclerosis. 00:08:39.00\00:08:40.02 We check their homocysteine levels which means most of the 00:08:40.05\00:08:42.30 people who come there. 00:08:42.33\00:08:43.30 We also have a good track record in terms of what happens even 00:08:43.31\00:08:49.00 within 7 days of the homocysteines being lowered 00:08:49.03\00:08:54.02 significantly in most of the people who come through 00:08:54.05\00:08:57.47 just by changing their lifestyle to the way we do. 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.36 This was published in the 00:09:00.39\00:09:01.86 Journal of the American Medical Association 00:09:01.89\00:09:03.56 back in 1997. 00:09:03.59\00:09:05.49 Is that right? 00:09:05.52\00:09:06.65 If you're wanting to lower that homocysteine level 00:09:06.69\00:09:10.84 the Lifestyle Center of America or a program similar to that 00:09:10.87\00:09:13.06 would be helpful. 00:09:13.09\00:09:14.11 What are some other less known but very important risk factors 00:09:14.14\00:09:17.53 for heart disease? 00:09:17.56\00:09:18.54 Another one that has emerged recently was kind of suspected 00:09:18.57\00:09:23.61 maybe 10-15 years ago and more and more we see greater evidence 00:09:23.64\00:09:27.58 of that, is infection by an organism called 00:09:27.61\00:09:31.36 Chlamydia pneumonia. 00:09:31.39\00:09:33.23 Now this is a bug that we can pick up in a variety of ways. 00:09:33.26\00:09:38.40 The most important being through sexual transmission. 00:09:38.43\00:09:42.77 This bug then sets up an inflammatory response on the 00:09:42.80\00:09:48.07 person's arteries. 00:09:48.10\00:09:49.24 Then responding to this inflammation develops 00:09:49.27\00:09:53.67 atherosclerosis. 00:09:53.70\00:09:55.56 So extra marital affairs of the heart are bad for the heart. 00:09:55.59\00:10:00.30 That's correct. 00:10:00.33\00:10:01.39 Ok, you put it that way. - laughter - 00:10:01.42\00:10:02.60 Besides then the sexually transmitted diseases, which 00:10:02.63\00:10:07.09 I think they're a very large problem in America. 00:10:07.12\00:10:10.35 I know that when I worked in an emergency department 00:10:10.38\00:10:12.51 as a nurse, we saw a lot of people with Chlamydia. 00:10:12.54\00:10:15.01 How big a problem is this Chlamydia in America? 00:10:15.04\00:10:19.05 It's a fairly sizable problem. 00:10:19.08\00:10:21.04 Most people who are working in the field realize that 00:10:21.07\00:10:25.54 herpes is probably number one and Chlamydia is a close 00:10:25.57\00:10:30.15 number two. 00:10:30.18\00:10:31.17 Now, Chlamydia, then what does it do? 00:10:31.20\00:10:32.28 Does it get into your heart? 00:10:32.31\00:10:34.18 It doesn't have to get into the heart necessarily, but it 00:10:34.21\00:10:37.34 circulates in the blood. 00:10:37.37\00:10:38.34 And its circulation in the blood somehow triggers the 00:10:38.35\00:10:42.05 inflammatory response so the body is reacting against the 00:10:42.08\00:10:45.33 Chlamydia actually is what seems to stimulate the production of 00:10:45.36\00:10:52.21 atherosclerotic plaque or hardening of the arteries. 00:10:52.24\00:10:54.75 Now we have been able to isolate Chlamydia type particles in 00:10:54.78\00:11:00.14 atherosclerotic plaque as well as finding other markers of 00:11:00.17\00:11:05.98 inflammation of the inflammatory response in the blood. 00:11:06.01\00:11:08.58 The higher these markers are for inflammation often times the 00:11:08.61\00:11:12.81 higher the risk of heart disease. 00:11:12.84\00:11:15.33 So I'm sure the sexually transmitted diseases of course 00:11:15.36\00:11:18.72 probably effect a lot of ages, but probably those that are 00:11:18.75\00:11:22.34 young that are just starting out thinking about those kind of 00:11:22.37\00:11:25.93 things, they probably just don't understand that what they could 00:11:25.96\00:11:29.27 do as a young person can be affecting their heart. 00:11:29.30\00:11:31.17 They can develop heart disease from it. 00:11:31.20\00:11:32.59 That's correct. 00:11:32.62\00:11:33.59 My advise to any young person is the best way is 00:11:33.60\00:11:38.78 the Bible way. 00:11:38.81\00:11:39.78 That is you stay away from sexual activity until the 00:11:39.79\00:11:43.55 appropriate time which is when you are married. 00:11:43.58\00:11:45.76 We have about 2 minutes and you have a another couple here. 00:11:45.79\00:11:50.06 What are the other less known but important factors before 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.68 we go to our break? 00:11:53.71\00:11:54.68 Well, one of the issues, and perhaps we can spend a great 00:11:54.69\00:11:58.89 deal of time talking about this one is stress. 00:11:58.92\00:12:02.02 In the past, people knew about the Type A personality and so on 00:12:02.05\00:12:06.39 and the fact that people are under a lot of stress seemed 00:12:06.42\00:12:09.76 to have more problems with coronary artery disease 00:12:09.79\00:12:13.53 or atherosclerosis, heart attacks and others. 00:12:13.56\00:12:15.81 This has been shown to be not quite as true 00:12:15.84\00:12:19.65 as it was thought before. 00:12:19.68\00:12:21.71 So just because I get things done and I'm driven and all that 00:12:21.74\00:12:24.14 doesn't mean I'm necessarily going to have heart disease? 00:12:24.17\00:12:26.67 That's correct, it doesn't mean that you're going to have 00:12:26.70\00:12:28.33 heart disease... 00:12:28.37\00:12:29.34 The CEO's, the Leo Koko types, or the others that are in charge 00:12:29.35\00:12:32.70 of the big corporations are they usually in good health? 00:12:32.73\00:12:34.91 Well, some of them actually have very good health programs 00:12:34.94\00:12:40.63 in that they follow a very disciplined pattern - 00:12:40.66\00:12:43.75 they exercise, they eat more appropriately. 00:12:43.78\00:12:46.84 You'd be surprised that the health of many of the executive 00:12:46.87\00:12:52.28 types is actually quite good because these people are paying 00:12:52.31\00:12:57.89 attention to what keeps them in tip-top shape so that their 00:12:57.92\00:13:00.62 minds can be clear so they can be thinking and making critical 00:13:00.65\00:13:03.14 decisions as best as they can. 00:13:03.17\00:13:04.96 So everybody really should be thinking like a CEO. 00:13:04.99\00:13:08.72 You are in charge, your are the chief executive officer 00:13:08.75\00:13:12.72 of all those cells in your body, over the one billion neurons 00:13:12.75\00:13:16.33 in your brain, you are important. 00:13:16.36\00:13:18.46 Ok, so stress then is important but it's more as it relates 00:13:18.49\00:13:22.34 to different factors other than Type A personality and what not. 00:13:22.37\00:13:25.47 That's correct. 00:13:25.50\00:13:26.49 In 1972 there were two researchers that came up with a 00:13:26.52\00:13:30.50 Type A issue. 00:13:30.53\00:13:31.78 That was found a few years later to not really pan out. 00:13:31.81\00:13:35.62 And another group, the Western Kilometer Study Group, actually 00:13:35.65\00:13:39.80 demonstrated that there's another set of factors 00:13:39.83\00:13:44.06 within the set of individuals who have Type A personality 00:13:44.09\00:13:47.81 that actually might be the thing that produces the heart disease. 00:13:47.84\00:13:53.28 We're talking with Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:13:53.31\00:13:55.67 and he has some other factors that are very important that 00:13:55.70\00:13:59.12 he has not revealed to us concerning heart disease. 00:13:59.15\00:14:01.60 They're very important and so we hope that you join us 00:14:01.63\00:14:04.06 when we come back. 00:14:04.09\00:14:05.20 Have you found yourself wishing that you could 00:14:08.02\00:14:09.82 shed a few pounds? 00:14:09.85\00:14:10.82 Have you been on a diet for most of your life? 00:14:10.83\00:14:13.53 But not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:13.56\00:14:16.74 If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then we 00:14:16.78\00:14:19.93 have a solution for you that works. 00:14:19.96\00:14:22.57 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:22.60\00:14:24.87 have written a marvelous booklet called, 00:14:24.90\00:14:27.10 Reversing Obesity Naturally, and we'd like to send it to you 00:14:27.13\00:14:30.76 free of charge. 00:14:30.79\00:14:31.80 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:14:31.83\00:14:34.96 by thousands who are able to eat more 00:14:35.00\00:14:37.14 and loose weight permanently 00:14:37.18\00:14:38.78 without feeling guilty or hungry through lifestyle medicine. 00:14:38.82\00:14:42.38 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:14:42.41\00:14:46.11 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach to eating, 00:14:46.14\00:14:49.74 nutrition, and lifestyle changes that can help you prevent 00:14:49.77\00:14:52.88 heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. 00:14:52.92\00:14:55.27 Call or write today for your free copy: 00:14:55.30\00:14:57.62 Welcome back. 00:15:07.74\00:15:09.48 We're talking with Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel 00:15:09.52\00:15:11.53 from the Lifestyle Center of America 00:15:11.57\00:15:13.14 there in beautiful Oklahoma positioned right there on the 00:15:13.18\00:15:16.97 top of that beautiful mountain and all those trees 00:15:17.01\00:15:20.25 and different things. 00:15:20.28\00:15:21.60 People just get healthy even seeing pictures of that 00:15:21.63\00:15:23.53 sometimes. 00:15:23.57\00:15:24.61 So we're told. 00:15:24.65\00:15:25.63 And you get to live there and to minister there. 00:15:25.66\00:15:29.25 We've been talking about heart disease, about risk factors that 00:15:29.28\00:15:32.61 all of us know about - high blood pressure, obesity, 00:15:32.65\00:15:36.42 diabetes, all these different kind of things. 00:15:36.45\00:15:39.22 But then you started to identify some less known but very 00:15:39.26\00:15:44.33 important risk factors, those being Chlamydia, homocysteine, 00:15:44.36\00:15:48.30 inflammatory processes that are involved with that, and then 00:15:48.34\00:15:52.25 we introduced stress. 00:15:52.29\00:15:53.26 But there was something about stress that we kind of left 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.36 that's very important. 00:15:56.39\00:15:58.83 What is that very important thing that we can't be involved 00:15:58.87\00:16:04.37 with if we want to avoid heart disease? 00:16:04.41\00:16:06.48 Let me set the stage a little bit. 00:16:06.51\00:16:08.04 Let's suppose, the viewers at home, let's suppose you had a 00:16:08.07\00:16:13.75 very important appointment and you had to take a flight before 00:16:13.78\00:16:19.43 you got to your appointment to get there in time. 00:16:19.47\00:16:21.89 Now you schedule the flight so you get there a half hour 00:16:21.93\00:16:25.25 before. 00:16:25.29\00:16:26.26 You had arranged for somebody to pick you up and take you to 00:16:26.27\00:16:28.80 your important appointment. 00:16:28.84\00:16:29.99 Ok, I think I've been there before. 00:16:30.03\00:16:33.04 Alright, so everything is working alright. 00:16:33.07\00:16:35.15 They call for people to enter the plane on time... 00:16:35.18\00:16:39.05 This must be not like my normal carrier - laughter - 00:16:39.08\00:16:42.88 Everything is working out fine except as you're getting on the 00:16:42.92\00:16:47.03 plane, you realize that they are having a little scurry because 00:16:47.06\00:16:51.47 someone who is supposed to be on the plane is running late. 00:16:51.51\00:16:55.88 Oh, and they tell you that. 00:16:55.92\00:16:57.23 And you find out, you hear them talking, and when you see 00:16:57.27\00:17:01.42 here comes this person coming along with multiple packages. 00:17:01.45\00:17:05.43 Those in the overhead bin and underneath and underneath 00:17:05.46\00:17:09.40 your bin... 00:17:09.43\00:17:10.80 I mean much too much. 00:17:10.83\00:17:12.04 I have met this person! - laughter - 00:17:12.07\00:17:14.40 Have you ever been that person? 00:17:14.43\00:17:15.84 Ohhh - I hate to say I think I probably have! - laughter - 00:17:15.88\00:17:20.85 So here comes the person and the attendants try to expedite 00:17:20.88\00:17:25.82 the situation. 00:17:25.85\00:17:26.82 You have gone on the plane. 00:17:26.83\00:17:28.42 You're sitting down. 00:17:28.46\00:17:29.43 You know it's time for them to close the doors. 00:17:29.45\00:17:32.69 The person comes on the plane. 00:17:32.73\00:17:35.08 They're not finding a seat. 00:17:35.12\00:17:37.41 They're trying to stuff things up over the overhead bins. 00:17:37.44\00:17:40.63 They're trying to stuff things underneath and things just 00:17:40.67\00:17:43.82 aren't working out. 00:17:43.86\00:17:45.02 Now I have been in that flight! 00:17:45.05\00:17:47.34 Right! 00:17:47.38\00:17:48.74 Now how are you feeling as I'm talking about this? 00:17:48.77\00:17:51.70 Ahhh... I'm feeling a little anxious! 00:17:51.73\00:17:56.43 Ok, a little bit anxious. 00:17:56.47\00:17:57.44 I'm feeling a little bit frustrated! 00:17:57.45\00:17:58.74 All right, finally the person is sat down... 00:17:58.77\00:18:01.96 And they sit right next to you! 00:18:02.00\00:18:03.60 Maybe! - Laughter - 00:18:03.64\00:18:05.53 And now the plane backs out. 00:18:05.56\00:18:10.03 You head down the runway and as you're taxing out you stop. 00:18:10.07\00:18:15.85 The plane broke? 00:18:15.88\00:18:17.96 The plane stopped... no, nothing broken. 00:18:18.00\00:18:19.82 You wait. 00:18:19.86\00:18:20.85 So you're not hearing anything from the pilot - nothing. 00:18:20.89\00:18:24.47 You look at your watch. 00:18:24.51\00:18:26.61 Minutes are ticking by. 00:18:26.65\00:18:28.24 You don't hear anything. 00:18:28.28\00:18:29.81 Finally the pilot comes on and the pilot says something like 00:18:29.84\00:18:34.39 this, "Ladies and gentlemen, we're sorry to inform you but 00:18:34.43\00:18:39.30 because of our delay in pushing back from the terminal we lost 00:18:39.34\00:18:44.18 our slot and it looks as though it's going to be about 00:18:44.22\00:18:46.54 15 minutes before we can get back into the queue. " 00:18:46.57\00:18:48.86 And you say? 00:18:48.89\00:18:50.66 15 minutes plus we already lost some time! 00:18:50.69\00:18:55.96 How are you feeling? 00:18:55.99\00:18:57.59 "Perfect peace have they that love Thy law and nothing 00:18:57.62\00:19:01.53 shall offend them. " 00:19:01.57\00:19:03.40 I'm looking at those texts right now and I'm 00:19:03.43\00:19:06.27 claiming those promises. 00:19:06.30\00:19:07.30 Ok. 00:19:07.33\00:19:08.51 So the flight takes off and everything is working all right. 00:19:08.55\00:19:10.56 The pilot says, "Look, it looks as though we have a tail wind. 00:19:10.60\00:19:13.24 We're going to be getting there actually on time. 00:19:13.27\00:19:16.48 So what we lost, don't worry about it, we're going to be 00:19:16.52\00:19:19.48 getting there on time. " 00:19:19.52\00:19:20.49 How does that sound to you now? 00:19:20.50\00:19:21.85 Ohhhh, I'm feeling much better! 00:19:21.88\00:19:22.97 Oh, relief! 00:19:23.00\00:19:24.20 I'm saying, "Why did I spend all of that energy being upset?" 00:19:24.24\00:19:26.70 If there's a difference between how you're feeling now 00:19:26.73\00:19:28.60 and how you were feeling when we were talking about what was 00:19:28.63\00:19:34.46 going on, you know the delays, that highlights that there is a 00:19:34.49\00:19:37.33 difference in what's going on physiologically 00:19:37.37\00:19:40.34 on the inside of you. 00:19:40.37\00:19:41.72 You see, stress is not an external thing. 00:19:41.75\00:19:43.94 Stress is actually an inside job. 00:19:43.97\00:19:45.99 Now, what the researchers have been able to demonstrate 00:19:46.02\00:19:49.80 is that this thing that's inside of us... 00:19:49.83\00:19:52.51 That knot in the stomach. 00:19:52.54\00:19:54.31 It is actually a greater predictor of your dying of a 00:19:54.34\00:20:00.31 heart attack than all of the other risk factors combined! 00:20:00.34\00:20:04.90 Really? 00:20:04.93\00:20:06.09 So that knot in the stomach, that feeling of frustration, 00:20:06.12\00:20:08.88 and all that, if that happens a lot you are 00:20:08.91\00:20:11.03 setting yourself up. 00:20:11.06\00:20:12.03 You are setting yourself up. 00:20:12.04\00:20:13.14 You see the issue is not just what we eat, 00:20:13.17\00:20:15.85 it's actually what's eating us! 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.88 The issue isn't just one of hardening of the arteries. 00:20:18.91\00:20:23.45 But it is actually one of hardening of the heart. 00:20:23.48\00:20:26.00 Because this thing that's inside of us, if I ask you, "Where does 00:20:26.03\00:20:30.19 it come from," what would you say? 00:20:30.22\00:20:32.08 It's got to be your mind. 00:20:32.11\00:20:33.08 Yes, it's just generated in there. 00:20:33.11\00:20:35.74 Now we can learn how to take care of it in the sense we 00:20:35.77\00:20:39.49 can learn to change our behavior. 00:20:39.52\00:20:41.30 In other words, we don't stomp up and down in the airplane. 00:20:41.33\00:20:44.34 And if the person sits next to us we don't just turn our backs 00:20:44.37\00:20:47.20 to the person. 00:20:47.23\00:20:48.20 We actually talk to them and try to calm down. 00:20:48.21\00:20:50.54 So we might learn how to behave even though the situation may 00:20:50.57\00:20:54.04 not be an optimal situation. 00:20:54.07\00:20:55.37 But it doesn't negate the fact that this thing 00:20:55.40\00:20:58.01 is on the inside. 00:20:58.04\00:20:59.05 Now let me ask you a question. 00:20:59.08\00:21:00.64 You are a Christian physician. 00:21:00.67\00:21:02.15 And so I assume you read your Bible and believe in Christ. 00:21:02.18\00:21:05.82 That's correct. 00:21:05.86\00:21:07.13 Did Christ have that kind of anger when He saw the 00:21:07.16\00:21:09.63 money changers in the temple and they were doing things 00:21:09.66\00:21:13.71 in church they shouldn't have done? 00:21:13.74\00:21:14.78 I believe not. 00:21:14.81\00:21:16.02 I believe what He had, this righteous indignation, was one 00:21:16.05\00:21:20.31 that was mixed with compassion. 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.29 He had compassion for the people who did not know that what they 00:21:22.32\00:21:28.09 were doing was wrong. 00:21:28.12\00:21:29.09 See, on the cross one of the things that He said was, 00:21:29.10\00:21:31.89 "Father for give them. " 00:21:31.92\00:21:33.02 Now He could have been very upset with what they were doing 00:21:33.05\00:21:36.06 that was very unjust. 00:21:36.09\00:21:37.58 But He said, "Father forgive them. " 00:21:37.61\00:21:39.90 The issue with this thing that we have inside, it has been 00:21:39.93\00:21:43.97 characterized, scientifically, as hostility. 00:21:44.00\00:21:47.28 And there are 3 components to the hostility that is 00:21:47.31\00:21:50.72 associated with atherosclerosis and hardening of the arteries. 00:21:50.75\00:21:53.14 If you have these you know that you have the 00:21:53.17\00:21:54.52 wrong kind of thing going on. 00:21:54.55\00:21:56.06 What are those three? 00:21:56.09\00:22:00.15 Those three things are: anger - actual rage, 00:22:00.18\00:22:05.97 aggression - that is when we act out... 00:22:06.00\00:22:10.39 So you're going down the road, you get angry at that person and 00:22:10.42\00:22:13.28 you swerve your car - and that's aggression? 00:22:13.31\00:22:14.61 That's aggression. 00:22:14.65\00:22:16.28 And the third is cynicism. 00:22:16.32\00:22:20.24 In other words you get there and you say, 00:22:20.27\00:22:21.67 "Well, I just had a great trip today. " 00:22:21.70\00:22:23.40 Or you don't believe. 00:22:23.43\00:22:25.63 You're not believing that everything 00:22:25.66\00:22:28.46 is going to go all right. 00:22:28.50\00:22:29.47 You're cynical - This flight? 00:22:29.48\00:22:31.75 No, this flight is not going to get there on time 00:22:31.78\00:22:33.22 because it never has. 00:22:33.25\00:22:34.41 If you have those elements that's damaging your heart? 00:22:34.44\00:22:37.60 That's damaging your heart, that's correct. 00:22:37.63\00:22:38.92 Now the issue then becomes one of how do we change that? 00:22:38.95\00:22:42.90 I don't know too many people that are really able to change 00:22:42.93\00:22:46.07 their minds for themselves. 00:22:46.10\00:22:48.09 Now we say we change our minds all the time, that is we tarry 00:22:48.12\00:22:52.12 between two decisions and we choose one or we choose another. 00:22:52.15\00:22:55.05 But to really change your heart on the inside, 00:22:55.08\00:22:58.40 that's something that requires special care. 00:22:58.43\00:23:01.59 See, we need a surgeon to do our heart surgery. 00:23:01.62\00:23:05.42 That surgeon is actually the Holy Spirit. 00:23:05.45\00:23:08.49 He can change our hearts and take out our stony hearts 00:23:08.52\00:23:12.95 and replace it with a heart of flesh. 00:23:12.98\00:23:15.26 And then we're able to look at these situations not with anger, 00:23:15.29\00:23:20.85 ire, frustration, and aggression but actually we're able to have 00:23:20.88\00:23:27.05 peace - peace that passeth understanding. 00:23:27.08\00:23:29.92 You are a scientist. 00:23:29.95\00:23:33.43 Change the hats now. 00:23:33.46\00:23:35.64 Just a couple minutes ago I said you're a Christian physician 00:23:35.67\00:23:39.18 and I asked you about that anger. 00:23:39.21\00:23:40.21 But now I'm saying you're a scientist. 00:23:40.24\00:23:42.16 Is there science behind what you just said - the Holy Spirit, 00:23:42.19\00:23:45.08 forgiveness, those type of things? 00:23:45.11\00:23:46.54 While there isn't science to state that we can prove the 00:23:46.57\00:23:51.56 Holy Spirit by science and things like that, what we can 00:23:51.59\00:23:54.23 see is that we have evidence of people whose lives are changed. 00:23:54.26\00:24:00.86 We know that, for instance, part of the issue with 00:24:00.89\00:24:05.51 hostility, anger, and aggression it's associated with a 00:24:05.54\00:24:09.38 characteristic that people have that is identifiable 00:24:09.41\00:24:11.95 scientifically provable, that is people who have a difficult 00:24:11.98\00:24:15.23 time forgiving. 00:24:15.26\00:24:16.67 Now I have to ask, where does this desire to forgive, 00:24:16.70\00:24:21.60 where does forgiveness come from? 00:24:21.63\00:24:23.45 And scientifically we can't prove where it comes from. 00:24:23.48\00:24:26.70 All we know is that people either are able to forgive 00:24:26.73\00:24:30.59 or they're not able to forgive. 00:24:30.62\00:24:32.95 Now we have to go to extra scientific resources to find out 00:24:32.98\00:24:37.42 about this thing of the heart. 00:24:37.46\00:24:39.36 And in the Bible account we find out that forgiveness actually 00:24:39.39\00:24:43.78 comes from God. 00:24:43.82\00:24:44.79 As we are forgiven, as we understand that we are forgiven 00:24:44.80\00:24:48.31 it is much easier for us to forgive. 00:24:48.35\00:24:50.53 Do you see a lot of people in your practice there at the 00:24:50.57\00:24:53.49 Lifestyle Center of America that really the issue is 00:24:53.52\00:24:56.41 lack of forgiveness and this kind of anger? 00:24:56.45\00:24:59.47 I wouldn't say a lot but a significant number. 00:24:59.50\00:25:02.49 And what do you do? 00:25:02.52\00:25:03.49 What are the things that you do? 00:25:03.50\00:25:04.90 I'm that person now, what would you say to me and why? 00:25:04.93\00:25:08.60 The thing is you may come with a question and say, "Here I am 00:25:08.63\00:25:13.49 I'm working out, I'm eating right, etcetera, how come I 00:25:13.52\00:25:17.24 just had a heart attack?" 00:25:17.27\00:25:18.26 Now the easy way to explain this is to start off with 00:25:18.29\00:25:21.64 the fact that you have genetic predispositions as well 00:25:21.68\00:25:25.00 to having heart disease. 00:25:25.03\00:25:26.49 But after getting through that and we talk about genes 00:25:26.52\00:25:31.35 and so on, you tell me, "Look my dad, he's 93 years old 00:25:31.39\00:25:36.18 with no problem, my mom she's 87 with no problem. 00:25:36.22\00:25:39.57 I have no one in my family who ever had heart disease. 00:25:39.60\00:25:42.12 My cholesterol is normal, my homocysteine is normal, 00:25:42.15\00:25:46.45 I have no C-reactive protein elevation in my blood, my 00:25:46.48\00:25:50.43 Chlamydia titer is very low, so what's the deal?!" 00:25:50.46\00:25:54.33 And while you're sitting there and you're talking to me, 00:25:54.37\00:25:57.65 I can sense, I can see that you have difficulty. 00:25:57.69\00:26:02.61 Now I can give you a written test of 46 items that's a subset 00:26:02.65\00:26:08.07 of the MMPI or the 00:26:08.10\00:26:10.74 Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory. 00:26:10.78\00:26:13.10 And how you respond on that test will tell me whether you 00:26:13.14\00:26:17.08 have high hostility, whether it's primarily in the anger, 00:26:17.12\00:26:21.03 aggression, or whether it's in the cynicism range. 00:26:21.06\00:26:24.86 And if that is the case, then we have to deal with it. 00:26:24.89\00:26:28.62 And the way we deal with it is I will have to ask you, "Are you 00:26:28.66\00:26:32.95 willing to forgive this person or that situation?" 00:26:32.98\00:26:37.23 Because you will have stories of things that are really 00:26:37.26\00:26:40.37 bothering you. 00:26:40.41\00:26:41.38 That's how people are. 00:26:41.39\00:26:42.75 They would have these things that they are carrying around. 00:26:42.78\00:26:45.89 It might have been something that mom did when you were a 00:26:45.92\00:26:48.99 little boy or something like that. 00:26:49.03\00:26:50.72 And we don't have to get into all the 00:26:50.75\00:26:52.41 psychoanalysis of those details. 00:26:52.45\00:26:54.05 But what we need to do is... 00:26:54.08\00:26:55.64 We need to identify them. 00:26:55.68\00:26:57.16 They need to be specific things, specific issues, you help them 00:26:57.20\00:26:59.90 identify those perhaps and talk about them. 00:26:59.93\00:27:02.19 Is it true that the situation, that is the other person, 00:27:02.22\00:27:11.45 that you talk about, may not change 00:27:11.48\00:27:13.01 but you can in fact change. 00:27:13.04\00:27:14.94 That's correct. 00:27:14.97\00:27:16.64 You see forgiveness is actually something that you can have 00:27:16.67\00:27:20.21 that liberates you and liberates the other person as well. 00:27:20.24\00:27:23.74 Forgiveness is really a matter of love. 00:27:23.77\00:27:26.43 Thank you Dr. Zeno Charles-Marcel. 00:27:26.46\00:27:29.73 We've been talking with the doctor about heart disease 00:27:29.76\00:27:32.66 and things that really we don't usually talk about as related to 00:27:32.70\00:27:35.31 heart disease. 00:27:35.35\00:27:36.32 Today we've really focused in on the last half of this 00:27:36.34\00:27:38.60 program on anger. 00:27:38.64\00:27:39.65 Are you angry? 00:27:39.69\00:27:40.66 Are you struggling with something? 00:27:40.67\00:27:42.18 Is there someone you need to forgive? 00:27:42.21\00:27:43.65 Or some situation, some person you need to forgive? 00:27:43.69\00:27:47.21 We encourage you to do that and do it now. 00:27:47.25\00:27:50.42 If you need more information about how to do that, contact 00:27:50.45\00:27:52.82 us here at 3ABN or the Lifestyle Center of America. 00:27:52.85\00:27:55.94 We hope that as a result that you'll have health that will 00:27:55.98\00:27:58.26 last for a lifetime. 00:27:58.30\00:27:59.92
