Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:46.19\00:00:48.02 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:48.05\00:00:49.51 and we're glad you're joining us today. 00:00:49.54\00:00:51.21 We're also delighted to have with us, 00:00:51.24\00:00:52.75 Dr. Richard Nelson Welcome doctor! 00:00:52.78\00:00:54.69 Thank you Don, I'm glad to be here today. 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.71 Doctor, you're the vice president for medical affairs 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.44 at Weimar Institute... 00:00:59.47\00:01:00.69 What exactly does that mean? What do you do? 00:01:00.72\00:01:03.15 Well, Weimar Institute has a number of different 00:01:03.18\00:01:05.58 health programs. 00:01:05.61\00:01:06.72 Probably the most famous is the 00:01:06.75\00:01:08.49 "NEWSTART Lifestyle Program" where... the last 00:01:08.52\00:01:11.35 23 years, people come to change their lifestyle and to gain 00:01:11.38\00:01:17.02 new health. 00:01:17.05\00:01:18.15 I understand you're also an international traveler... 00:01:18.18\00:01:20.43 What do you do around the world? 00:01:20.46\00:01:22.11 We take the NEWSTART Lifestyle Program, 00:01:22.14\00:01:24.66 which has been SO successful in California, 00:01:24.69\00:01:27.00 and take it around the world. 00:01:27.03\00:01:28.74 We've been in about 217 cities as of now, about 30 countries 00:01:28.75\00:01:35.83 since 1982; so we just turned 18 years old as far as 00:01:35.86\00:01:40.57 the "health expo" wing is concerned. 00:01:40.60\00:01:42.70 And you've been with the institute for quite some time? 00:01:42.73\00:01:45.85 Yes, this is my 4th year at Weimar Institute. 00:01:45.88\00:01:49.09 My first 3 years was as a volunteer, when I also 00:01:49.12\00:01:53.05 was working as an assistant clinical professor with 00:01:53.08\00:01:55.96 Loma Linda University out in Saudi Arabia... 00:01:55.99\00:01:59.26 And during my vacations, I would join the 00:01:59.29\00:02:02.19 preventive medicine, or health expo team 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.88 in various places of the world. 00:02:04.91\00:02:07.80 What exactly is a lifestyle-related illness? 00:02:07.83\00:02:10.48 Well, the leading causes of death in North America 00:02:10.51\00:02:14.49 right now include heart disease. 00:02:14.50\00:02:16.79 Most heart diseases are lifestyle-related. 00:02:16.82\00:02:19.89 They're related to how we live. 00:02:19.92\00:02:22.99 The typical American lifestyle will result in 00:02:23.02\00:02:26.35 coronary artery disease, of course someone who is 00:02:26.38\00:02:29.10 overweight, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and the list goes on. 00:02:29.13\00:02:34.16 I'm sure your viewers have been seeing this in this program 00:02:34.19\00:02:37.45 the different types of lifestyle diseases. 00:02:37.48\00:02:40.36 The NEWSTART Program is designed not only to prevent the diseases 00:02:40.39\00:02:44.78 but, in many cases, actually reverse it. 00:02:44.79\00:02:47.99 That sounds exciting... 00:02:48.02\00:02:49.02 You mean, so you don't have to just be doomed to a life of 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.83 type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, 00:02:51.86\00:02:54.01 all these different things, you can actually REVERSE those. 00:02:54.04\00:02:57.65 In some cases, the first one you mentioned, 00:02:57.68\00:03:00.16 type 2 diabetes, is exciting because 35%, and as much as 00:03:00.19\00:03:04.74 50% of type 2 diabetics who undergo intensive 00:03:04.77\00:03:09.40 lifestyle modification, can actually be medication-free 00:03:09.43\00:03:13.78 within a short period of time... 00:03:13.81\00:03:15.76 We're talking less than a month, 00:03:15.79\00:03:17.81 and actually have normal blood sugars providing 00:03:17.84\00:03:21.67 they stick with the program. 00:03:21.68\00:03:23.35 Is this those that take just oral medications, 00:03:23.38\00:03:26.22 or is it those that are also on injections, or insulin shots? 00:03:26.25\00:03:29.61 If we look at people who are taking both oral hypoglycemics 00:03:29.64\00:03:32.84 and also insulin... put them all together, 00:03:32.87\00:03:36.07 our average is above 35%, 00:03:36.10\00:03:39.15 can be OFF of their medication in just 3 weeks. 00:03:39.18\00:03:42.48 Above 35%... That's right. 00:03:42.51\00:03:43.95 And if we're looking at people who are insulin-resistant, 00:03:43.98\00:03:46.41 and just borderline, getting to the point where they 00:03:46.44\00:03:48.33 need medication, more than three-fourths of those 00:03:48.36\00:03:51.18 people can actually AVOID developing 00:03:51.21\00:03:54.42 type 2 diabetes. Very good news! 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.66 I heard recently in the news that they are doing some 00:03:56.70\00:03:59.47 new treatments where they're actually implanting cells 00:03:59.50\00:04:02.53 within the pancreas that now are producing insulin. 00:04:02.56\00:04:05.63 Right, and I certainly applaud these efforts. 00:04:05.66\00:04:08.05 Our program is not alternative medicine... to say... 00:04:08.08\00:04:12.14 We like to think of it more of complementary medicine. 00:04:12.15\00:04:14.51 Now, those terms are kind of getting blended together. 00:04:14.54\00:04:17.14 Our program is physician-monitored. 00:04:17.17\00:04:19.36 It's university professor affiliated. 00:04:19.39\00:04:23.06 Our patients who come in undergo a complete evaluation, 00:04:23.07\00:04:27.63 blood work, etcetera, and the physicians that work with them 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.73 that changed their lifestyle, 00:04:31.76\00:04:33.53 most physicians know that if a patient 00:04:33.54\00:04:37.99 changes their lifestyle, they're going to be less 00:04:38.02\00:04:39.86 dependent on medication... 00:04:39.89\00:04:41.04 But is it SAFE to take them off their medication? 00:04:41.07\00:04:44.55 And the answer is... Probably not, unless the patient 00:04:44.58\00:04:47.41 is really going to make a change. 00:04:47.44\00:04:48.99 So what we do at Weimar is we give a person 00:04:49.02\00:04:52.34 and 18-day lifestyle change. 00:04:52.37\00:04:55.50 We show them how to eat different, 00:04:55.53\00:04:57.68 how to exercise better, and all the 8 components of 00:04:57.71\00:05:01.42 the NEWSTART lifestyle. 00:05:01.43\00:05:02.98 So, how does that work in the real world... 00:05:03.01\00:05:04.58 I mean, you take someone away... 00:05:04.61\00:05:05.88 you kind of rapture them away to this place, 00:05:05.91\00:05:07.63 in and it's beautiful, and I'm sure that Weimar has probably 00:05:07.66\00:05:10.95 beautiful, nice vistas around, 00:05:10.98\00:05:13.67 and there's room service, or there's this and that... 00:05:13.70\00:05:17.31 What do you do when they leave that place? 00:05:17.34\00:05:18.66 Our greatest challenge is alumni follow-up. 00:05:18.69\00:05:20.58 We have about 3,000 alumni now, and following them 00:05:20.61\00:05:24.51 and getting them to stay with the program... 00:05:24.54\00:05:26.25 is our greatest challenge, and not long ago, 00:05:26.28\00:05:30.29 the "Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine" 00:05:30.32\00:05:33.08 out of Washington, DC, ranked various lifestyle centers 00:05:33.11\00:05:38.01 for long-term success, and weight loss. 00:05:38.02\00:05:40.84 You'll see a lot of signs that will say, 00:05:40.87\00:05:42.62 "30 pounds in 30 days"... We don't make those promises. 00:05:42.65\00:05:46.37 What we emphasize is a lifestyle change 00:05:46.40\00:05:50.63 for the rest of your life. 00:05:50.64\00:05:52.31 And that's why one of the reasons we are ranked 00:05:52.34\00:05:54.77 the top 2 in the nation... by this think tank 00:05:54.80\00:05:57.24 in Washington, DC for our long-term results. 00:05:57.25\00:05:59.75 And what exactly do you DO for alumni follow-up? 00:05:59.78\00:06:04.06 Well... One, we have direct mailing. 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.72 We have an alumni coordinator who contacts our alumni. 00:06:06.75\00:06:11.10 Another thing we do... we put together resources 00:06:11.13\00:06:13.70 so our alumni can actually bring NEWSTART into their home, 00:06:13.73\00:06:17.43 and share it with their community. 00:06:17.46\00:06:18.76 This year, we're video-taping all the physician lectures again 00:06:18.77\00:06:22.60 because our last video series is outdated, 00:06:22.63\00:06:27.55 so we're putting together a new video series. 00:06:27.58\00:06:29.68 We also have annual wellness weekends, 00:06:29.71\00:06:33.01 and times when people can come back to Weimar, 00:06:33.04\00:06:36.30 and go through the program in a refresher. 00:06:36.33\00:06:38.52 And so once you're an alumnus, can you come through 00:06:38.55\00:06:41.28 free the second time, or at a reduced cost? 00:06:41.31\00:06:43.64 We do make special deals. 00:06:43.67\00:06:45.84 I notice, also, that you have a website for the 00:06:45.87\00:06:48.79 NEWSTART Program... www. newstart. ws 00:06:48.82\00:06:52.40 Is that an alumni-type thing too? 00:06:52.43\00:06:55.02 Can they go there, and then get updates on that webpage? 00:06:55.05\00:06:58.09 Right... Our website updates on the dates of our 00:06:58.12\00:07:02.33 upcoming programs, educational resources that are available. 00:07:02.36\00:07:05.49 This year, we produced a dynamic CD-ROM 00:07:06.39\00:07:09.99 on how people get sick... 00:07:10.02\00:07:12.06 How heart disease, or I should say, coronary artery disease 00:07:12.09\00:07:15.52 and diabetes not only can be prevented but reversed 00:07:15.53\00:07:19.32 with cartoon animation, etcetera, 00:07:19.35\00:07:21.94 and that CD is now available through our website. 00:07:21.97\00:07:25.48 Wonderful! So there are some resources that they 00:07:25.51\00:07:27.57 go home and say... "This is what I do," 00:07:27.60\00:07:29.67 and they say, "Where did you GO, the planet Zolar?" 00:07:29.70\00:07:32.15 "No, I went to Weimar, and it's #1 of these types of programs 00:07:32.16\00:07:36.56 or in the top 3," and all the different things you've said 00:07:36.59\00:07:38.46 It's all right for them to look at. 00:07:38.49\00:07:40.27 Let me ask you this... We talked a little bit about 00:07:40.30\00:07:43.01 diabetes type 2, and the fact that it was reversible 00:07:43.04\00:07:46.60 in 35% of the cases, or on oral hypoglycemics even more 00:07:46.63\00:07:50.48 than that, but let's talk just for a minute about 00:07:50.51\00:07:52.50 heart disease... I think it kills now, what? 00:07:52.53\00:07:54.86 How many people in America, and what happens 00:07:54.89\00:07:56.99 in the program to heart disease? 00:07:57.02\00:07:58.46 Okay, I had the privilege of working with an 00:07:58.50\00:08:02.59 international heart surgery team as a non-physician 00:08:02.62\00:08:05.36 before training as a physician... 00:08:05.39\00:08:07.77 And I used to look at what was being done after 00:08:07.80\00:08:13.08 the patients underwent heart surgery. 00:08:13.11\00:08:16.96 And, one of the surgeons remarked to me, 00:08:16.99\00:08:19.64 "You know, Richard, probably the best thing we've done for this 00:08:19.67\00:08:22.52 patient was going through this procedure... Sure, 00:08:22.55\00:08:25.30 we fixed those 4 inches of arteries; we've given him 00:08:25.33\00:08:29.00 a new chance on life, but this dramatic procedure 00:08:29.03\00:08:32.60 has MADE this person make up their mind" 00:08:32.63\00:08:35.88 "I'm ready for a change. " 00:08:35.91\00:08:37.49 But the results haven't been out there until 00:08:37.52\00:08:40.02 just a couple of years ago... 00:08:40.05\00:08:41.40 in the "Journal of American Medical Association" 00:08:41.43\00:08:44.44 1998, December issue, the Lifestyle heart trial 00:08:44.47\00:08:49.31 results were published that Dr. Dean Ornish has done 00:08:49.34\00:08:52.43 and he has demonstrated, in a very well-controlled study, 00:08:52.46\00:08:56.55 that coronary artery disease not only can be stopped in its 00:08:56.58\00:08:59.97 progression, but also can be reversed to a certain degree. 00:09:00.00\00:09:03.88 This was a fairly small group of patients, 00:09:03.91\00:09:06.62 but the results were so promising, that now a large 00:09:06.65\00:09:10.34 scale prospective study is under works right now 00:09:10.37\00:09:14.51 being sponsored by the 00:09:14.54\00:09:15.91 "Healthcare Finance Administration" 00:09:15.94\00:09:17.85 One other thing to note though, 00:09:17.88\00:09:20.22 the coronary arteries only opened up about 4.5% 00:09:20.25\00:09:25.05 in the first year... 00:09:25.08\00:09:26.23 The group that was on the vegan diet, 00:09:26.26\00:09:30.40 had less than half the coronary events that the group 00:09:30.43\00:09:35.22 who was following the step 2 American Heart Association 00:09:35.25\00:09:38.90 Program experienced... which has made researchers 00:09:38.93\00:09:43.06 question, should we study this further, 00:09:43.10\00:09:45.05 is there something about a whole plant food diet, 00:09:45.08\00:09:48.54 a low fat diet that really can help reverse heart disease. 00:09:48.57\00:09:53.23 So, they have found, really a difference in the 00:09:53.26\00:09:56.33 reversal rates of those that just... 00:09:56.36\00:09:58.55 Or is there ANY reversal in a 00:09:58.58\00:09:59.95 step 2 diet that you're talking about? 00:09:59.98\00:10:02.99 I guess that would have... What's the difference between 00:10:03.03\00:10:05.13 a step 2 diet and a vegan diet? 00:10:05.16\00:10:07.50 Well, let's take it a little further... 00:10:07.53\00:10:10.51 The vegan diet uses whole plant foods, 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.00 with protected fat... 00:10:13.03\00:10:15.85 And the step 2 diet is more of a percentage of fat. 00:10:15.88\00:10:19.27 And in the NEWSTART Lifestyle Program, our concern is 00:10:19.30\00:10:22.30 that the fat used in the diet is not refined fat, 00:10:22.33\00:10:27.00 which would be subject to oxidation. 00:10:27.03\00:10:29.26 We've been holding to this now for over 20 years 00:10:29.29\00:10:32.63 and there has been a lot of questions as 00:10:32.66\00:10:35.31 whether that's a valid position. 00:10:35.34\00:10:37.33 Just this year, some notable cardiologists are coming out 00:10:37.36\00:10:42.43 and saying, "You know, it appears that the immune system 00:10:42.46\00:10:47.42 is key to the repair of coronary artery disease. 00:10:47.45\00:10:50.97 It's not the area of the angiogram that's so narrowed 00:10:51.00\00:10:54.70 that may be the biggest concern... 00:10:54.71\00:10:56.84 But rather, it's the unstable plaque along the walls 00:10:56.85\00:11:00.73 of the coronary arteries. 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.89 And, they have discovered that if you have a more oxidized 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.67 LDL cholesterol, that that actually interferes with the 00:11:06.70\00:11:10.39 immune system in repairing the coronary artery... 00:11:10.42\00:11:13.36 which, when I heard this, I thought to myself, 00:11:13.39\00:11:16.22 "Again the value of whole plant foods" 00:11:16.25\00:11:18.68 because whole plant foods have fat in it 00:11:18.69\00:11:22.32 which is protected from oxidation. 00:11:22.35\00:11:25.50 That may sound like a big theory, but more and more 00:11:25.53\00:11:29.26 evidence is out there that the whole plant food diet 00:11:29.27\00:11:33.28 without refined products subject to oxidation 00:11:33.31\00:11:37.55 are better in the treatment or prevention of 00:11:37.58\00:11:41.61 lifestyle diseases. 00:11:41.64\00:11:42.69 So foods as grown, and it doesn't really necessarily 00:11:42.70\00:11:45.19 mean... I remember working on a cardiology unit as well... 00:11:45.22\00:11:48.68 as a nurse, and looking at these different patients, 00:11:48.71\00:11:52.31 as they came back from their little session 00:11:52.32\00:11:54.61 with the cardiologist who would show them... well look 00:11:54.64\00:11:57.03 "This is where it's really narrowed," and really that's 00:11:57.06\00:12:00.27 not where the problem is really... it's those unstable 00:12:00.30\00:12:04.50 areas that are sometimes not as narrow, 00:12:04.53\00:12:07.32 but they cause problem. 00:12:07.35\00:12:10.35 Well the narrow sites are certainly great for discussion. 00:12:10.38\00:12:13.11 Yes they are... Look at your coronary arteries, 00:12:13.14\00:12:15.46 YOU'VE GOT to make a change. 00:12:15.49\00:12:16.98 We can make some emergency plumbing right now 00:12:17.01\00:12:19.56 ...that's important; but right now it is 00:12:19.59\00:12:23.95 important that if you do have heart disease, 00:12:23.98\00:12:25.96 that you be followed by a competent cardiologist. 00:12:25.99\00:12:28.64 We have, on our board of directors, a leading 00:12:28.67\00:12:32.15 board certified cardiologist, we have internists 00:12:32.18\00:12:35.78 on our staff, and we work side-by-side with the specialist 00:12:35.81\00:12:40.20 and look how we can optimize someone's lifestyle 00:12:40.21\00:12:44.07 both WITH and WITHOUT medication. 00:12:44.10\00:12:46.68 You may be watching right now, as we're talking to 00:12:46.71\00:12:48.99 Dr. Richard Nelson, and you're saying, "Look I want more 00:12:49.02\00:12:51.64 information about this program now!" 00:12:51.67\00:12:53.64 I think probably the best place for you to go right now 00:12:53.67\00:12:56.00 ...If I'm wrong correct me, is www. newstart. ws 00:12:56.03\00:13:00.24 All the contact numbers are there if you're on the internet, 00:13:00.27\00:13:02.67 and you may want to go there 00:13:02.70\00:13:04.08 and check out some more information. 00:13:04.12\00:13:05.86 When we come back, I want to talk and ask Dr. Nelson 00:13:05.89\00:13:08.48 some questions, more specifically about what 00:13:08.51\00:13:10.69 NEWSTART really means. 00:13:10.72\00:13:12.31 Of course, it sounds like a new start, but is there more 00:13:12.34\00:13:14.74 to that acronym, and what 00:13:14.77\00:13:16.56 does it mean... when we come back. 00:13:16.59\00:13:17.89 We're glad that you've joined us... 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.20 Join us when we come back! 00:13:19.23\00:13:22.81 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed a few pounds 00:13:22.84\00:13:26.10 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:13:26.13\00:13:28.22 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:13:28.25\00:13:31.23 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:13:31.26\00:13:34.28 then we have a solution for you that works! 00:13:34.31\00:13:36.76 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:13:36.79\00:13:40.03 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:13:40.06\00:13:41.97 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:13:42.00\00:13:44.34 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:13:44.37\00:13:47.20 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:13:47.23\00:13:49.74 by thousands who are able to eat more, and lose weight 00:13:49.77\00:13:52.86 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:13:52.89\00:13:55.68 through lifestyle medicine. 00:13:55.71\00:13:57.30 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:13:57.33\00:14:00.96 and in this booklet, they present a sensible approach 00:14:00.97\00:14:04.03 to eating, nutrition, and lifestyle changes 00:14:04.06\00:14:06.49 that can help you prevent heart disease, 00:14:06.50\00:14:08.37 diabetes, and EVEN cancer. 00:14:08.40\00:14:10.40 Call or write today for your free copy of 00:14:10.43\00:14:12.53 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:12.56\00:14:14.18 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:14:14.19\00:14:17.38 It's absolutely FREE of charge, so call or write today. 00:14:17.41\00:14:23.79 Welcome back! That's right. 00:14:36.77\00:14:38.24 If you're listening today, and you really want to get 00:14:38.27\00:14:40.55 more information, you may want to just go to a webpage 00:14:40.58\00:14:43.94 www. newstart. ws 00:14:43.97\00:14:50.92 We were talking about what NEWSTART really stands for... 00:14:50.95\00:14:54.67 Help us with what it stands for, but put a few stories 00:14:54.70\00:14:57.78 in there about what really happens when you follow 00:14:57.81\00:14:59.63 the NEWSTART Program. 00:14:59.66\00:15:01.31 Okay, NEWSTART is an acronym. 00:15:01.34\00:15:03.48 We didn't come up with it, it came up from one of our 00:15:03.49\00:15:07.70 patients or participants. 00:15:07.73\00:15:09.71 We were presenting the 8 natural principles of health 00:15:09.74\00:15:13.14 as we know them, and they were 00:15:13.17\00:15:15.92 put into an acronym called NEWSTART. 00:15:15.95\00:15:17.97 The "N" is for nutrition. 00:15:18.00\00:15:19.64 And, our nutritional program, we think of good, 00:15:19.65\00:15:23.21 better and best. Okay, what's good? 00:15:23.24\00:15:26.01 Good may be following a typical American Heart Association 00:15:26.04\00:15:29.92 step 2 diet... for example, you may be using leaner meats 00:15:29.95\00:15:35.20 ...limiting your dairy products 1 or 2 cups of coffee a day, 00:15:35.23\00:15:41.73 and that's the typical HEALTHIER American diet. 00:15:41.76\00:15:46.96 And "better" would be somewhere in-between the best and the good 00:15:46.99\00:15:53.45 And we have to meet people where they're at... 00:15:53.46\00:15:56.65 And where you're at is probably early atherosclerosis. 00:15:56.68\00:16:01.98 Maybe you're developing high blood pressure... 00:16:02.01\00:16:03.61 Maybe you're insulin resistant. 00:16:03.64\00:16:05.71 And now it's time to reevaluate your lifestyle, make a change. 00:16:05.74\00:16:10.68 So that if we were to move to the best diet 00:16:10.71\00:16:13.29 from a physician who believes in creation, 00:16:13.32\00:16:16.13 I know that man wasn't originally designed to run 00:16:16.16\00:16:19.91 on nonplant food. 00:16:19.92\00:16:22.32 And, we do a lot of work in former Soviet Union countries, 00:16:22.35\00:16:26.06 and I notice they have different types of octane there... 00:16:26.07\00:16:27.83 They have this 76 octane, and they have the 00:16:27.86\00:16:30.25 90-something octane. 00:16:30.28\00:16:31.95 And when you're driving the 76 octane, it's going 00:16:31.98\00:16:34.02 ping, ping, ping, ping, ping all the time! 00:16:34.05\00:16:35.83 But you still can get from A to B 00:16:35.86\00:16:38.23 And I think a lot of us Americans are going 00:16:38.26\00:16:40.20 ping, ping, ping... and what happens is 00:16:40.23\00:16:42.04 is over time, we are wearing out our bodies. 00:16:42.07\00:16:46.22 So if we can approximate the best diet, 00:16:46.25\00:16:49.08 and the best diet we describe is whole plant foods eaten whole 00:16:49.09\00:16:52.36 I'm not talking about just piling your table with 00:16:53.38\00:16:56.19 raw fruits and vegetables. 00:16:56.22\00:16:57.86 But when you use a recipe, use the whole plant, 00:16:57.89\00:17:01.47 and then combine it in a tasty way. 00:17:01.48\00:17:04.16 So, do people like the food when they're there, 00:17:04.19\00:17:08.42 or do they just kind of like... "What is this?" 00:17:08.45\00:17:11.07 Recently, we just started another one of our sessions 00:17:11.10\00:17:13.96 at NEWSTART, and I was there for the opening... 00:17:13.99\00:17:16.39 And I was surprised to see the reactions. 00:17:16.42\00:17:18.76 They said, "The food is so good" 00:17:18.79\00:17:20.62 Because we take popular recipes and change them 00:17:20.65\00:17:25.48 in such a way to put in nutritious components 00:17:25.51\00:17:28.24 and we can end up with almost the same variety and taste. 00:17:28.27\00:17:32.37 So, it's high carbohydrates, or is it high proteins, what is it? 00:17:32.40\00:17:36.63 Okay, predominantly complex carbohydrates, 00:17:37.14\00:17:40.44 low protein, low fat, and with a good variety... 00:17:40.47\00:17:44.57 And for some conditions like type 2 diabetes, 00:17:44.60\00:17:47.90 we may change the time that they have fruit, 00:17:47.91\00:17:50.48 and change the way they exercise in combination with the meals. 00:17:50.51\00:17:55.57 So it's a Genesis 1:29 diet, then adding the vegetables in, 00:17:55.60\00:18:00.69 but let me ask this... 00:18:00.72\00:18:02.25 You know, I mentioned high protein diet for a reason... 00:18:02.28\00:18:05.32 because, you know, some people say, 00:18:05.35\00:18:06.51 That IS the WAY you should lose weight, 00:18:06.54\00:18:08.45 and they do say, "You can help your diabetes with that. " 00:18:08.48\00:18:11.28 What do you think about that, and what's the 00:18:11.31\00:18:13.17 NEWSTART philosophy on that? 00:18:13.20\00:18:14.87 Our philosophy is very much contrasting. 00:18:14.90\00:18:18.90 We have found that a high complex carbohydrate diet 00:18:18.93\00:18:22.77 combined with effective exercise, and the other 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.13 components of the NEWSTART Program 00:18:25.16\00:18:26.79 actually can reverse the condition. 00:18:26.82\00:18:29.54 The reason people get short-term results with 00:18:29.57\00:18:33.09 the high protein diet is they're just taking away 00:18:33.12\00:18:35.65 the carbohydrate or sugar load... 00:18:35.66\00:18:38.04 But if you look, for example, a study was done a few years ago 00:18:38.07\00:18:41.58 in "The Lancet" a famous British journal in Africa. 00:18:41.61\00:18:44.48 They looked at 1,300 Africans who had an 80% 00:18:44.51\00:18:48.34 complex carbohydrate diet. 00:18:48.37\00:18:50.73 How many diabetics were found... Not one! 00:18:50.76\00:18:54.30 And so the myth that high complex carbohydrate diets 00:18:54.33\00:18:58.22 don't go along with the treatment of diabetes 00:18:58.25\00:19:01.98 is out the window as far as we're concerned. 00:19:02.01\00:19:04.65 The high protein diet which is so popular today, 00:19:04.68\00:19:07.92 I think we're going to learn a little bit more 00:19:07.95\00:19:09.64 about it as time goes on. 00:19:09.67\00:19:10.93 We know that diabetics, we have to be ESPECIALLY careful about 00:19:10.96\00:19:13.81 their kidneys, and a high protein diet is 00:19:13.84\00:19:16.24 hard on your kidneys. 00:19:16.27\00:19:17.37 So do you have people that come through the NEWSTART Program 00:19:17.40\00:19:19.44 that have tried a high protein diet, and then they 00:19:19.47\00:19:21.59 come back to you... I've had people come and say, 00:19:21.62\00:19:23.23 "Look, I've lost a lot of weight on it, I'd like to see if 00:19:23.26\00:19:26.16 your program is more effective" 00:19:26.19\00:19:27.85 Our program, though, is dependent on following 00:19:27.88\00:19:30.30 all the 8 principles, and that includes 00:19:30.33\00:19:32.56 getting a lot of exercise. 00:19:32.59\00:19:33.76 Some people come up to our program, by the way... 00:19:33.79\00:19:35.67 the "N" is for nutrition; the "E" is for exercise. 00:19:35.70\00:19:38.52 They come up to our program and some of them can only 00:19:38.55\00:19:40.96 walk around our flagpole... 00:19:40.99\00:19:42.93 And by the end of the 18 days, they're walking as much as 00:19:42.96\00:19:45.64 3 to 5 miles a day. 00:19:45.67\00:19:47.06 Wow, that's really miraculous, but there are reasons for it... 00:19:47.09\00:19:51.48 but it would appear to be a miracle. 00:19:51.51\00:19:53.60 What's the "W" for? The "W" is for water, 00:19:53.63\00:19:57.31 and we want to get at least 6 to 8 glasses of water every day 00:19:57.34\00:20:00.86 and when I speak overseas, there's always a danger 00:20:00.89\00:20:04.23 that your translator may make a mistake... 00:20:04.26\00:20:05.98 I had a chieftain come to me in East Malaysia 00:20:06.01\00:20:09.59 and his hand, when I pinched his skin, 00:20:09.62\00:20:12.58 it just stuck up, like this. 00:20:12.59\00:20:14.53 And he said, "I don't like to drink water, I don't like water" 00:20:14.56\00:20:17.84 "And I have headaches, BAD headaches. " 00:20:17.87\00:20:20.53 And just briefly told this chieftain go home and drink 00:20:20.56\00:20:23.46 your 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, and come back and see us. 00:20:23.49\00:20:26.95 And 3 days later, he came, and he said, "This NEWSTART Program 00:20:26.98\00:20:30.32 it just doesn't work. " 00:20:30.35\00:20:31.40 "There's just no way. I've tried and tried. " 00:20:31.43\00:20:33.19 "My headache is gone, but I just can't get the 00:20:33.20\00:20:35.34 68 glasses of water down every day. " 00:20:35.37\00:20:38.70 A lot of our programs, that we depend on translators 00:20:38.73\00:20:42.08 and in the former Soviet Union, a number of new Christians 00:20:42.11\00:20:46.84 who are with our programs, are people who attended our 00:20:46.87\00:20:49.38 NEWSTART Health Expos. 00:20:49.41\00:20:51.99 In just the former Soviet Union alone, we've done about 00:20:52.02\00:20:54.16 65 health expos in different cities. 00:20:54.19\00:20:57.21 So the physical changes seem to lead to spiritual changes. 00:20:57.24\00:21:01.98 Oh, absolutely, especially when 00:21:02.01\00:21:03.93 we see the real point of 3 John 2... 00:21:03.96\00:21:08.85 "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper 00:21:08.88\00:21:11.74 and be in health, even as your soul prospers. " 00:21:11.77\00:21:14.69 Our Creator wants us to be healthy today. 00:21:14.72\00:21:17.38 He's not commanding us... "Don't' use this, or 00:21:17.41\00:21:20.97 don't use that or I won't love you" 00:21:21.00\00:21:23.37 He's saying, "I love you, and I don't want you to 00:21:23.40\00:21:26.20 experience the same diseases that the pharaohs experienced. " 00:21:26.23\00:21:30.63 The same diseases brought on by refined foods, 00:21:30.66\00:21:33.76 lack of exercise that had been plaguing the human race 00:21:33.79\00:21:37.68 for thousands of years. 00:21:37.71\00:21:38.89 What does the "S" stand for? 00:21:38.92\00:21:40.23 Sunlight! 00:21:40.26\00:21:42.39 And, the sunlight is important for the immune system. 00:21:42.42\00:21:45.36 We need a little bit of direct sunlight on our faces 00:21:45.39\00:21:47.32 every day, and we don't want to get too much. 00:21:47.35\00:21:50.58 Sunlight! So, N-E-W-S-T... What does the "T" stand for? 00:21:50.61\00:21:54.39 The "T" is an old word for temperance or self control. 00:21:54.42\00:21:58.02 Basically is you know it's right for you. 00:21:58.05\00:22:01.06 Eat in moderation... that's what's good for you, 00:22:01.09\00:22:04.40 and avoid things that are harmful. 00:22:04.41\00:22:05.93 Some people say you can eat more, 00:22:05.96\00:22:07.40 and weigh less... Is that true? 00:22:07.43\00:22:08.68 Well if you're eating complex carbohydrates, 00:22:08.71\00:22:11.31 and you're not adding refined foods, 00:22:11.34\00:22:14.14 such as the hibernation fuel of vegetable oil for example 00:22:14.17\00:22:18.96 or the ROCKET fuel of white sugar. 00:22:18.99\00:22:23.29 Take a sugarcane for example... 00:22:23.32\00:22:25.09 How much sugarcane would it take to make 1 candy bar? 00:22:25.12\00:22:27.84 It could be anywhere from 10 to 30 feet? 00:22:27.87\00:22:30.78 How long will it take you to eat 10 to 30 feet of sugarcane? 00:22:30.81\00:22:34.17 You could just chew, and chew, and chew... it doesn't happen. 00:22:34.20\00:22:37.39 But you can eat a candy bar in about a minute. 00:22:37.42\00:22:40.36 And take, for example, what I'm calling hibernation fuel... 00:22:40.39\00:22:43.19 Some of the vegetable oil; it takes about 14 ears of corn 00:22:43.22\00:22:47.65 to make 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, 00:22:47.68\00:22:49.78 and that's where you can pack on the calories... 00:22:49.81\00:22:52.06 And that's also where you can get a source of oxidized fat 00:22:52.09\00:22:57.59 which, today, is showing to be playing a role 00:22:57.62\00:23:01.55 in adversely affecting the immune system... 00:23:01.58\00:23:04.88 lots of evidence yet to follow. 00:23:04.91\00:23:07.08 What does the "A" stand for? 00:23:07.11\00:23:08.58 Fresh air.. tobacco-free. 00:23:08.61\00:23:10.71 Tobacco in the developing world 00:23:10.74\00:23:12.91 is the #1 preventable cause of death. 00:23:12.94\00:23:15.43 Fortunately, in North America, we've caught on. 00:23:15.46\00:23:18.24 I just came from a Central Asian Republic 00:23:18.27\00:23:20.84 where the president had to undergo bypass surgery, 00:23:20.87\00:23:24.11 and his physician said, "You've GOT to stop smoking. " 00:23:24.14\00:23:27.92 So he came home and he said, "Well, in that case, 00:23:27.95\00:23:31.20 if it's not good for me, I'll write a decree" 00:23:31.23\00:23:34.05 And he made a decree, no smoking in public or in any restaurant, 00:23:34.08\00:23:38.31 or place of entertainment. 00:23:38.34\00:23:40.13 He didn't want to be reminded of it. 00:23:40.16\00:23:41.53 That's right, and he happened to get a hold of a 00:23:41.56\00:23:45.10 NEWSTART book, and was witnessed to raising it above 00:23:45.11\00:23:48.34 his head and saying, "This is our future ministry of health" 00:23:48.37\00:23:51.13 Is that right? And so, the NEWSTART lifestyle 00:23:51.16\00:23:54.30 in a public form of something called "Health Expo" 00:23:54.33\00:23:57.16 has been taken around the world, and, as I mentioned, 00:23:57.19\00:24:00.75 over 200 cities in some 30 countries 00:24:00.78\00:24:03.93 where we are showing people that they can make 00:24:03.96\00:24:06.47 changes in their homes. 00:24:06.50\00:24:07.77 And I believe that, you know, that's another component here; 00:24:07.80\00:24:10.09 we're talking about the NEWSTART 00:24:10.10\00:24:11.46 We want to finish that up in just a minute, 00:24:11.49\00:24:12.80 but you mentioned "Health Expo" 00:24:12.83\00:24:14.30 I think there's another webpage for people that are interested 00:24:14.33\00:24:16.77 in that... maybe they're watching the program 00:24:16.80\00:24:18.64 somewhere else around the world 00:24:18.67\00:24:19.80 and they want to be involved in that. 00:24:19.83\00:24:22.52 I think that's www. healthexpo. org 00:24:22.56\00:24:25.22 is that right? That's right, and on the 00:24:25.25\00:24:27.10 Health Expo website, you can learn about how you can 00:24:27.13\00:24:30.05 participate in some form of NEWSTART Health Expo 00:24:30.08\00:24:34.32 evangelism or community support. 00:24:34.33\00:24:37.24 That includes wellness weekends and health expos, 00:24:37.27\00:24:41.82 and other followup seminars. 00:24:41.85\00:24:44.63 So, a good way to get good things happening 00:24:44.66\00:24:47.38 wherever you might be... what was it, 233 countries 00:24:47.41\00:24:52.89 Actually 217 cities in 30 countries... 00:24:52.90\00:24:55.03 30 countries... Okay! Well I was even more optimistic. 00:24:55.07\00:24:57.03 But we hope that that happens. 00:24:57.68\00:24:58.72 And what we do is, we'll put together 00:24:58.75\00:25:00.65 health expo panels in any language, culture-specific, 00:25:00.68\00:25:04.04 develop them for that country and then deliver them, 00:25:04.07\00:25:07.54 and then work with those individuals, and the power 00:25:07.57\00:25:12.20 of the health message can never be underestimated. 00:25:12.23\00:25:17.07 Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Temperance, 00:25:17.10\00:25:21.38 Fresh Air... and then the final 2... 00:25:21.41\00:25:23.98 The "R" is for rest, and "T" for trust in God. 00:25:24.01\00:25:27.62 And "R" is one of the toughest areas 00:25:27.65\00:25:30.14 I've had to deal with because getting enough 00:25:30.17\00:25:32.01 sleep, and also managing stress... 00:25:32.04\00:25:35.04 Managing stress is so important for a 00:25:35.07\00:25:37.81 healthy lifestyle. 00:25:37.84\00:25:39.36 And if you follow a healthy whole plant food diet, 00:25:39.37\00:25:42.48 and exercise, but yet don't have stress under management, 00:25:42.51\00:25:45.73 you WILL have lifestyle-related disease 00:25:45.76\00:25:49.33 in most cases. 00:25:49.36\00:25:50.46 The "T" is for trust in God. 00:25:50.49\00:25:52.27 God has given us the guidelines for a 00:25:52.30\00:25:54.60 healthy lifestyle. 00:25:54.61\00:25:55.80 He wants us to live an abundant and robust life. 00:25:55.83\00:25:59.43 Good health! 00:25:59.46\00:26:00.56 He doesn't wish upon us diabetes, heart disease, 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.52 and high blood pressure, for example... 00:26:03.55\00:26:07.24 And we can show that with a whole plant food diet 00:26:07.27\00:26:11.04 exercise NEWSTART program 76% of men taking 00:26:11.05\00:26:15.02 high blood pressure medication can be off with a 00:26:15.05\00:26:17.48 normal blood pressure, and 50% of women. 00:26:17.51\00:26:20.15 God has given us this as an example for us. 00:26:20.18\00:26:25.11 We can use it... He loves us just the same 00:26:25.12\00:26:27.26 but He doesn't choose in many people to prevent these diseases 00:26:27.29\00:26:31.21 from coming upon us. 00:26:31.22\00:26:32.44 So for the "T" is for trust in God. 00:26:32.47\00:26:34.60 You're a Christian physician, do you pray with your patients? 00:26:34.63\00:26:36.78 Absolutely! 00:26:36.81\00:26:37.80 Do the people there at NEWSTART take advantage 00:26:37.83\00:26:40.00 of that vertical relationship? 00:26:40.03\00:26:42.04 We have people who come from all faiths, 00:26:42.07\00:26:44.02 and no faiths. 00:26:44.05\00:26:45.51 But rarely would we ever have a patient who wouldn't 00:26:45.54\00:26:49.17 want us to pray with them. 00:26:49.20\00:26:50.48 But you're respectful if they don't want you to... 00:26:50.51\00:26:51.94 Absolutely. 00:26:51.97\00:26:53.20 And I have worked in many Moslem, and also atheists 00:26:53.23\00:26:57.81 countries, and we've been respected because of our beliefs 00:26:57.84\00:27:01.60 Thank you for being with us, Dr. Nelson. 00:27:01.63\00:27:05.40 I want to just give the information that people 00:27:05.43\00:27:08.03 may need to get in touch with 00:27:08.06\00:27:09.36 some of the things you've been saying. 00:27:09.39\00:27:10.61 If you're interested in the NEWSTART Program, 00:27:10.64\00:27:13.31 and you want to get in touch with them, 00:27:13.34\00:27:14.83 there's a webpage you can go to right now if you have 00:27:14.86\00:27:16.98 the internet, or access to it. 00:27:17.01\00:27:18.40 It's www. newstart. ws 00:27:18.43\00:27:25.27 That's right... newstart. ws 00:27:25.30\00:27:27.02 And then if you're interested in the program with 00:27:27.05\00:27:29.54 Health Expo maybe here where we are positioned 00:27:29.57\00:27:33.61 right here in North America, 00:27:33.64\00:27:35.84 you can have a weekend, a special weekend, 00:27:35.87\00:27:37.97 or you can have culture-specific weekend around the world 00:27:38.00\00:27:41.41 If you'd like to get in touch with that information, 00:27:41.42\00:27:43.46 the webpage is www. healthexpo. org 00:27:43.49\00:27:47.98 So we hope that you can get in touch with one of 00:27:47.99\00:27:50.48 those 2 things, or contact us here at 3ABN, 00:27:50.51\00:27:53.02 and the information will be here. 00:27:53.05\00:27:54.87 Thanks for joining us, and we hope that 00:27:54.90\00:27:56.59 YOU will have health that lasts for a lifetime! 00:27:56.63\00:27:58.68
