Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:45.06\00:00:47.87 I'm your host Don Mackintosh, 00:00:47.90\00:00:49.36 and today, I'm delighted to be in the studio with 00:00:49.39\00:00:51.50 Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus 00:00:51.53\00:00:53.11 Welcome Dr. McNeilus! 00:00:53.14\00:00:55.47 Now you're a medical doctor; you've been trained 00:00:55.50\00:00:57.66 in pediatrics, and you've done oncology. 00:00:57.69\00:01:01.87 You've done hematology, and then you have a 00:01:01.90\00:01:04.16 degree also, I believe, in microbiology... 00:01:04.19\00:01:06.17 And family medicine... and family medicine! 00:01:06.18\00:01:09.06 So with all these different things, you've come to 00:01:09.09\00:01:13.20 a rather startling conclusion to some, but really a 00:01:13.23\00:01:16.08 refreshing conclusion that some of the most POWERFUL 00:01:16.11\00:01:19.17 means of HEALING people are some of the SIMPLEST means. 00:01:19.20\00:01:23.51 And, I like what you've entitled your book... 00:01:23.54\00:01:26.79 It's called "God's Healing Way" 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.61 and it's really focusing on those simple remedies. 00:01:28.62\00:01:33.03 I like the way it's outlined too with the different health laws, 00:01:33.06\00:01:36.73 and then practical treatments, and then ending, of course, 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.52 with turning once again to the most powerful Healer, 00:01:39.55\00:01:43.14 that would be God. 00:01:43.17\00:01:45.52 Today we're going to be talking about some home remedies, 00:01:45.55\00:01:48.52 and you have some real strong convictions about 00:01:48.55\00:01:53.15 why we should talk about what we're going to talk about today. 00:01:53.18\00:01:56.90 Thank you Don, it's a pleasure 00:01:56.93\00:01:59.02 for me to be here with you today. 00:01:59.05\00:02:03.12 I would like to share just briefly at the beginning 00:02:03.13\00:02:07.27 of our talk, of how God's healing is available today. 00:02:07.30\00:02:15.54 What are the conditions for healing? 00:02:15.57\00:02:18.07 Are they any different than they've ever been before? 00:02:18.10\00:02:22.55 What are some of the Biblical principles? 00:02:22.58\00:02:25.34 And, certainly when we look at healing, we recognize that 00:02:25.37\00:02:29.21 faith is essential. 00:02:29.24\00:02:31.35 In Matthew 9:22, Jesus said to an individual that He healed, 00:02:31.38\00:02:39.59 "Thy faith hath made thee whole" 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.32 In other words, your faith has made you well. 00:02:42.35\00:02:46.34 However, sometimes we forget that obedience to God's laws, 00:02:46.37\00:02:52.51 or His commands, are also necessary for optimal healing. 00:02:52.52\00:02:58.80 John 14:15 reminds us of this... 00:02:58.83\00:03:04.37 It says, "If you love Me, KEEP my commands. " 00:03:04.40\00:03:09.26 "My commands" are His laws. 00:03:09.29\00:03:11.92 His laws of not only his moral laws, His laws of physiology... 00:03:11.95\00:03:17.49 His laws of good health are also included in God's commands. 00:03:17.52\00:03:23.72 Okay, so we really all have the opportunity of receiving 00:03:23.75\00:03:28.41 that gift of the Spirit... which is faith 00:03:28.44\00:03:30.28 The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, longsuffering 00:03:30.31\00:03:32.97 faithfulness... And what you're suggesting 00:03:33.00\00:03:35.45 is then that obedience is a fruit of faith. 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.64 It comes right out of it, and we can kind of know 00:03:37.67\00:03:39.70 whether or not we're in that relationship with Jesus 00:03:39.71\00:03:42.18 by whether or not we have that fruit in our life of obedience. 00:03:42.21\00:03:45.59 Now, you know, let's just role-play 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.99 I guess, with a couple of things... 00:03:49.02\00:03:51.35 You have a few things that you want to show us here 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.44 that are very practical approaches to dealing with 00:03:53.47\00:03:55.81 disease, or discomfort. 00:03:55.84\00:03:57.82 Maybe, what's the first thing we want to talk about here 00:03:57.85\00:03:59.98 of ALL the different options we have. 00:03:59.99\00:04:02.34 Today, I would like to talk about "fomentations" 00:04:02.37\00:04:06.04 What are fomentations? 00:04:06.07\00:04:08.57 They are applying a hot and cold to a body area... 00:04:08.60\00:04:14.59 often using a towel, or a similar large cloth to a 00:04:14.62\00:04:19.76 particular body area. 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.53 Okay, so for what reason... just because you want that 00:04:21.56\00:04:26.34 particular area to have treatment... 00:04:26.37\00:04:28.67 I suppose it would be an area that you can't submerge. 00:04:28.70\00:04:32.19 That's right, and this is why if you have an illness, 00:04:32.22\00:04:37.82 or an infection in a hand or foot, you can submerge it 00:04:37.85\00:04:40.74 into the hot and cold water such as with the hot and cold 00:04:40.77\00:04:44.62 contrast bath. 00:04:44.65\00:04:46.19 But if you have an area such as your rib cage, 00:04:46.22\00:04:48.74 or chest area, abdominal area, back area... 00:04:48.77\00:04:52.24 these areas are not easily submerged locally, 00:04:52.27\00:04:56.21 and so you need to take a hot towel, 00:04:56.24\00:04:59.87 or fomentation cloth and apply it to that area, 00:04:59.90\00:05:02.93 and apply hot and cold having the same principles 00:05:02.96\00:05:05.66 as submerging in hot and cold water to a particular body part. 00:05:05.67\00:05:09.88 So let's say, I don't know, maybe I broke my ribs... 00:05:09.91\00:05:13.84 I ran into a tree, who knows, or something like that, 00:05:13.87\00:05:16.84 and then I have a lot of pain from that, 00:05:16.87\00:05:18.73 and I'm not breathing as deeply as I should, 00:05:18.76\00:05:20.58 and I start to develop bronchitis/pneumonia... 00:05:20.61\00:05:22.80 Would fomentations be a good treatment for that? 00:05:22.83\00:05:25.01 It's one of the best treatments. 00:05:25.04\00:05:26.80 Fomentations have a wonderful application in chest illnesses 00:05:26.83\00:05:33.53 such as asthma, bronchitis, and also chest injuries such as 00:05:33.54\00:05:39.13 rib cage injuries. 00:05:39.16\00:05:41.60 So, what would we do? 00:05:41.63\00:05:43.60 I mean, okay, should I hold my chest? 00:05:43.63\00:05:46.35 I ran into something... and, actually, I have broken 00:05:46.38\00:05:49.57 my ribs before, so I know how to do this... Right! 00:05:49.60\00:05:52.17 I'll be happy to show you here. Okay 00:05:52.20\00:05:55.67 I preface this one with a little story as well. 00:05:55.70\00:05:59.71 One of our Amish bishops in our area had a buggy accident. 00:05:59.72\00:06:04.80 And, one Saturday his son called our home just as 00:06:04.83\00:06:08.90 we were leaving for church... 00:06:08.93\00:06:10.26 And he said, "I know this is your Sunday; 00:06:10.29\00:06:12.84 this is your rest day, but my father has had this 00:06:12.85\00:06:17.23 severe rib injury, and now he seems to have pneumonia... 00:06:17.26\00:06:20.60 or something like that... He's coughing up very thick sputum 00:06:20.63\00:06:24.55 and it's very painful. " 00:06:24.56\00:06:26.75 "Is there any way you can see him today. " 00:06:26.78\00:06:29.33 ...And we assured him that there was! 00:06:29.36\00:06:32.01 So he came over to our place for a treatment, 00:06:32.04\00:06:34.92 and what we did is... for the treatment, 00:06:34.95\00:06:37.55 we put his feet in hot water to help in also decongesting 00:06:37.58\00:06:44.19 the chest area for the treatment, 00:06:44.22\00:06:46.83 and then we put some hot towels to his chest... 00:06:46.86\00:06:50.60 And I'm going to demonstrate to you how we heated 00:06:50.63\00:06:53.18 these towels, and how we did that. 00:06:53.21\00:06:55.87 You have a special pot here... 00:06:55.90\00:06:57.97 You can use any kind of pot at home. That's right! 00:06:58.00\00:07:01.35 Well, if we're in a society where you have a 00:07:01.38\00:07:04.82 microwave, the microwave actually is a very 00:07:04.85\00:07:10.86 nifty way to do that as well. 00:07:10.87\00:07:13.08 Let's take this towel for example... 00:07:13.11\00:07:14.98 This towel is just a dry towel, and I folded it widthwise 00:07:15.01\00:07:20.26 twice, and then I run it under the tap water 00:07:20.29\00:07:23.37 to get it completely wet. 00:07:23.40\00:07:25.71 And so, we'll pretend this is a wet towel, not a dry one. 00:07:25.74\00:07:29.19 Then I roll it up, and wring it out... so that it's 00:07:29.22\00:07:33.32 damp but not sloshy, or soggy. 00:07:33.35\00:07:37.22 And then, I simply put it in any 00:07:37.25\00:07:39.99 old plastic bag that I have around. 00:07:40.03\00:07:41.74 I save my grocery bags for such a purpose. 00:07:41.77\00:07:44.79 You need to put it in a bag though... 00:07:44.82\00:07:46.41 It's the best idea to put it in a bag, 00:07:46.44\00:07:49.03 and then I put it into my microwave, turn it on high 00:07:49.06\00:07:52.72 for anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes, 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.67 depending on the size of the towel and the microwave. 00:07:55.70\00:07:58.60 After it is heated, then I will apply it to the body area. 00:07:58.63\00:08:05.99 But say, if I go to an Amish home where I do not have 00:08:06.02\00:08:09.24 electricity, or some parts of the world where 00:08:09.27\00:08:11.84 those things aren't available, what do I do? 00:08:11.85\00:08:14.78 I bet ya, you're going to talk about the pot now. 00:08:14.81\00:08:16.92 The pot comes into play now! 00:08:16.95\00:08:19.18 You can use any large pot. 00:08:19.21\00:08:21.47 A canning kettle is perfect... 00:08:21.50\00:08:23.55 but not every one has a canning kettle, 00:08:23.58\00:08:26.28 or not even everyone has a little wire basket. 00:08:26.29\00:08:30.33 What you can do is get some kind of steamer, 00:08:30.36\00:08:33.39 and one thing I have done to make a steaming pot of 00:08:33.42\00:08:38.42 out of this is that I need to put some 00:08:38.45\00:08:42.20 water in this pot, about 1 or 2 inches' level... 00:08:42.23\00:08:46.43 Probably a little bit closer to 1-1/2 or so; 00:08:46.46\00:08:50.24 at least over an inch because you don't want 00:08:50.27\00:08:52.46 the pot to run dry while you're in the process of steaming 00:08:52.49\00:08:55.72 which will take about a 1/2 an hour. 00:08:55.75\00:08:57.64 What I have done actually... is I've made a little 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.98 improvision here. 00:09:00.01\00:09:01.07 This steaming apparatus for steaming vegetables is a 00:09:01.10\00:09:05.33 little bit low, and I want it a little higher, 00:09:05.36\00:09:07.34 so I took an aluminum pan, punched holes in it, 00:09:07.37\00:09:11.67 and put that upside-down in the bottom of the pot, 00:09:11.70\00:09:15.76 just to give it a little raising there... 00:09:15.79\00:09:19.56 And then I just put this little steamer contraption 00:09:19.59\00:09:23.95 right here, and you can use any type of wire convenience 00:09:23.98\00:09:30.43 ...Just enough to bring the level of the towel ABOVE 00:09:30.44\00:09:36.26 the water level because you want it just 00:09:36.29\00:09:38.32 to be steamed, not boiled. 00:09:38.33\00:09:40.74 Then you put your towel in there on in. 00:09:40.77\00:09:42.48 Yes, then you have your wet towel exactly like you did 00:09:42.51\00:09:46.74 for the microwave; you fold it, you wet it, 00:09:46.77\00:09:49.74 you wring it out, and then you have it just damp... 00:09:49.77\00:09:53.15 and you lay it right in here. 00:09:53.18\00:09:56.19 You can put anywhere from 1 to 3, 00:09:56.22\00:10:00.27 and often, I will put 3 in this canning kettle. 00:10:00.30\00:10:04.77 Then I will put it on the heat whether it's a wood stove, 00:10:04.80\00:10:08.42 or electric stove, it doesn't matter. 00:10:08.45\00:10:10.11 Within 30 minutes, usually, the steam will come up 00:10:10.14\00:10:14.14 and heat the towel. 00:10:14.17\00:10:16.68 Now, how do I get the towel from there to your chest? 00:10:16.71\00:10:20.51 That's a good question! 00:10:20.54\00:10:22.02 Well, you are going to demonstrate that today. 00:10:22.03\00:10:25.72 I aim to please... the doctor is in and so is the patient! 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.86 So my rib hurts though, so be easy on me. That's right! 00:10:28.89\00:10:32.02 And what we're going to do, because I don't have a 00:10:32.05\00:10:34.36 wool blanket here, often I put the hot towel within a 00:10:34.39\00:10:37.23 wool blanket to kind of regulate the heat a bit... 00:10:37.26\00:10:40.86 But since I don't have that, I am going to just triple 00:10:40.89\00:10:44.24 the layers here, and I'm going to put this dry towel 00:10:44.27\00:10:46.86 right over the area where I want to put this hot towel. 00:10:46.89\00:10:50.76 I would be laying down normally... 00:10:50.79\00:10:52.84 Normally, you'd be lying down, and you might even have 00:10:52.87\00:10:55.02 your feet in hot water to kind of even increase the 00:10:55.05\00:10:59.29 effectiveness of the treatment, 00:10:59.32\00:11:00.65 but you don't even have to do that. 00:11:00.68\00:11:02.20 Now, you can use the tongs, or you can use an oven mitt. 00:11:02.23\00:11:06.95 But since I don't have either one, I'm just going to 00:11:06.98\00:11:10.95 use a little pair of spoons here to lift this out 00:11:10.98\00:11:19.17 because it's quite hot. 00:11:19.20\00:11:22.90 I may lay it actually out on a table, 00:11:22.93\00:11:25.92 which I'm just going to pretend my lap is... 00:11:25.93\00:11:27.91 And I will lay it at one end, and actually roll it out 00:11:27.94\00:11:32.60 very quickly, and then very quickly, I would usually just 00:11:32.63\00:11:38.67 wrap this in a little wool blanket... 00:11:38.70\00:11:40.85 Since I don't have that, it's going to go right on there. 00:11:40.88\00:11:43.66 Okay, and I wouldn't really normally touch it, 00:11:43.69\00:11:45.17 but I'm going to today. 00:11:45.20\00:11:46.32 And, in order to keep it from losing much more heat, 00:11:46.33\00:11:51.67 I'm going to put a dry one right on top, 00:11:51.70\00:11:53.29 so it's like the hot filling of a sandwich again... 00:11:53.32\00:11:56.31 All right... there you go! How long is that good for? 00:11:56.34\00:11:59.58 Now, you're going to start to feel better quite soon. 00:11:59.61\00:12:03.11 It's going to relax the muscles, and it's going to kind of 00:12:03.14\00:12:06.94 bring the blood to the surface to decongest that area, 00:12:06.97\00:12:10.74 and we are going to leave that on for anywhere from 00:12:10.77\00:12:13.76 5 to 7 minutes. 00:12:13.77\00:12:15.63 Okay, so then what does it do? 00:12:15.66\00:12:19.12 It helps to decongest that area under which there is 00:12:19.15\00:12:25.16 an injury or an infection. 00:12:25.19\00:12:27.19 It brings blood to the area? 00:12:27.20\00:12:28.52 Yes, it brings blood to the surface area which 00:12:28.55\00:12:31.44 helps will decongest that area underneath there 00:12:31.47\00:12:33.85 where it helps to move the blood. 00:12:33.88\00:12:35.54 Again, it's causing a movement of our circulatory system 00:12:35.57\00:12:39.14 which takes away waste, and 00:12:39.17\00:12:40.97 brings in nutrients, and white blood cells. 00:12:41.00\00:12:43.44 How many times do you do this then? 00:12:43.47\00:12:44.71 We will leave that on... and another thing we will do 00:12:44.74\00:12:48.44 often which we won't demonstrate here with you since you were 00:12:48.47\00:12:51.03 bundled up once before with one of our treatments... 00:12:51.06\00:12:53.51 But we would normally have your feet in, say, a hot foot bath, 00:12:53.54\00:12:57.47 and we would cover you with a sheet, or a blanket so that 00:12:57.48\00:13:00.25 you could sweat in there, and that's another way to... 00:13:00.29\00:13:03.03 How do we close this off? 00:13:03.06\00:13:04.03 Well, now that it's getting comfortable, 00:13:04.06\00:13:06.46 we'll take it off. The whole thing? 00:13:06.49\00:13:08.37 We'll take the whole thing off. 00:13:08.40\00:13:09.93 We'll take this off, and then what we usually have 00:13:09.96\00:13:13.76 is a pan of cold water nearby. 00:13:13.79\00:13:18.69 We always seem to have to get that cold in-there don't we? Yes 00:13:18.72\00:13:21.38 And we'll pretend we have this pan of cold water, 00:13:21.41\00:13:23.82 and this is COLD, and often what we'll do 00:13:23.85\00:13:26.93 We'll take it, and make kind of a little mitt, 00:13:26.96\00:13:29.64 and we'll just lightly rub that area very briskly, 00:13:29.67\00:13:33.30 but gently because it's a little bit sore. It hurts! 00:13:33.33\00:13:36.71 And, we'll do that about a 1/2 a minute to a minute, 00:13:36.74\00:13:39.65 and then we will dry it off with another towel. 00:13:39.68\00:13:43.55 Just dry it off so that it's nice and dry here... 00:13:43.56\00:13:48.18 And now, we're ready for the second towel, 00:13:48.19\00:13:50.89 so we will again put this up here, the dry towel, 00:13:50.92\00:13:55.90 and this time, we may want to put this one back in to steam 00:13:55.93\00:14:00.71 if we need to, or we'll pick out another one, 00:14:00.74\00:14:03.25 and repeat that process for a total of about 4 to 5 changes. 00:14:03.28\00:14:08.87 ...4 to 5 changes, and then several times that day? 00:14:08.90\00:14:12.09 It can be done anywhere from 1 to 4 times a day, 00:14:12.12\00:14:15.09 and it can be continued until pain relief and healing 00:14:15.10\00:14:19.74 have begun there. 00:14:19.77\00:14:21.48 We're talking with Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus 00:14:21.51\00:14:24.47 and she's telling us that sometimes the simplest ways of 00:14:24.50\00:14:28.27 addressing issues are really the best and most effective. 00:14:28.30\00:14:31.06 When we come back, we'll learn more. 00:14:31.09\00:14:32.56 We hope that you join us! 00:14:32.59\00:14:36.03 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed a few pounds 00:14:36.06\00:14:39.28 Have you been on a diet for most of your life... 00:14:39.31\00:14:41.62 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:14:41.65\00:14:44.53 If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, 00:14:44.56\00:14:47.77 then we have a solution for you that works. 00:14:47.80\00:14:50.48 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:50.51\00:14:53.29 have written a marvelous booklet called... 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.35 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:14:55.38\00:14:57.60 and we'd like to send it to you FREE of charge. 00:14:57.63\00:15:00.70 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:15:00.73\00:15:03.17 by thousands who are able to eat more, 00:15:03.20\00:15:05.51 and lose weight permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:15:05.54\00:15:09.14 through lifestyle medicine. 00:15:09.17\00:15:11.06 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:15:11.09\00:15:14.73 and in this booklet, they present a sensible approach 00:15:14.76\00:15:17.46 to eating, nutrition, and lifestyle changes 00:15:17.49\00:15:19.92 that can help you prevent heart disease, diabetes 00:15:19.95\00:15:22.38 and even cancer. 00:15:22.41\00:15:23.46 Call or write today for your free copy of 00:15:23.49\00:15:25.97 "Reversing Obesity Naturally" 00:15:26.00\00:15:27.84 and you could be on your way to a healthier, happier YOU! 00:15:27.87\00:15:31.08 It's absolutely FREE of charge, so call or write today! 00:15:31.11\00:15:37.02 Welcome back! 00:15:37.05\00:15:38.12 If you've just joined us, we've been talking about 00:15:38.15\00:15:39.80 the pharmacy in your kitchen, 00:15:39.83\00:15:41.48 and our pharmacy specialist is Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus 00:15:41.51\00:15:46.25 Looks like we actually are right now into the refrigerator 00:15:46.26\00:15:50.06 area, or right into the kitchen, and it looks like you have 00:15:50.09\00:15:52.55 what is this... a potato, an onion, some cabbage, 00:15:52.58\00:15:55.24 and various tools to lay those things away, if we need to. 00:15:55.27\00:15:59.51 What are these for? 00:15:59.54\00:16:00.60 What are we going to be doing now? 00:16:00.64\00:16:01.95 We're going to demonstrate some poultices that can be applied 00:16:01.98\00:16:05.90 to injured, or inflamed parts of our body that can be 00:16:05.93\00:16:11.79 very effective in the healing process. 00:16:11.80\00:16:13.71 So potato, is that what you're going to talk about first? 00:16:13.74\00:16:18.07 Let's look at the potato, and I've got my sleeves rolled up 00:16:18.10\00:16:20.87 here and my kitchen counter right on my lap! 00:16:20.88\00:16:23.72 All right great! 00:16:23.75\00:16:25.10 And we are going to look at the raw potato! 00:16:25.13\00:16:28.45 Potato poultices are used RAW and they can be used 00:16:28.48\00:16:34.87 just about anywhere for any condition. 00:16:34.90\00:16:37.68 They can be used for eye infections... 00:16:37.71\00:16:40.56 for red eye, inflamed eyes. 00:16:40.57\00:16:43.93 They can be used for burns, or injuries, or infected areas. 00:16:43.96\00:16:52.31 Pretty much the same places you can use charcoal. 00:16:52.34\00:16:56.47 So you just grate them up fine like this... Yes 00:16:56.50\00:16:58.56 The potato must be used raw, and it can simply be grated. 00:16:58.59\00:17:02.94 All right... you grate that. Can you make it bigger than that 00:17:02.97\00:17:07.13 Can you use that other bigger 00:17:07.16\00:17:09.19 section to grate them even larger? 00:17:09.20\00:17:10.89 Well this will certainly take quite a while... wouldn't it? 00:17:10.92\00:17:13.52 Let's see here; let's just for the sake of our... 00:17:13.55\00:17:16.05 But normally you'd do it small like that. 00:17:16.08\00:17:18.11 Smaller is probably better. 00:17:18.14\00:17:20.43 It will get more mushy, and juicy which is kind of 00:17:20.46\00:17:23.70 what you're looking for. 00:17:23.73\00:17:24.88 But mashed potatoes doesn't work. 00:17:24.91\00:17:26.50 No, hot mashed potatoes aren't quite what we're looking for 00:17:26.53\00:17:29.64 in this case. Okay 00:17:29.67\00:17:33.18 All right, so you grate that all up, and what are the 00:17:33.19\00:17:35.85 healing properties in a potato? 00:17:35.88\00:17:39.52 Well, you know, it seems like potato has a lot of 00:17:39.55\00:17:45.28 minerals such as potassium. 00:17:45.31\00:17:49.57 Other things that the Lord seems to have put into it 00:17:49.60\00:17:52.40 that we are actually just discovering 00:17:52.43\00:17:57.23 certainly have healing properties. 00:17:57.24\00:17:59.99 It seems like the mineral combinations 00:18:00.02\00:18:02.02 of magnesium, potassium things like that do have 00:18:02.03\00:18:05.79 properties that are able to promote healing process. 00:18:05.82\00:18:10.30 And, so what I want to do is show you how 00:18:10.33\00:18:14.42 I make a simple poultice... 00:18:14.45\00:18:16.34 I've gotten the raw potato... 00:18:16.37\00:18:18.22 Okay great... those look ready to go. 00:18:18.25\00:18:22.83 And this is a small poultice. 00:18:22.86\00:18:25.05 This can be, for example, for an eye infection... 00:18:25.08\00:18:27.68 So let's just make this a little bit smaller here. 00:18:27.71\00:18:30.99 I hope that the Food and Drug Administration is not watching. 00:18:31.02\00:18:33.59 They'll probably find some way to market this and sell it! 00:18:33.62\00:18:35.86 Well I tell you, that's one reason these ways 00:18:35.89\00:18:39.07 don't have a lot of market value because it's hard to 00:18:39.10\00:18:41.53 improve on God... isn't it, on some of these things! 00:18:41.56\00:18:46.00 So we put the little shavings of the potato inside a 00:18:46.03\00:18:49.16 piece of paper, or loose-fitting cloth, or a cheesecloth, 00:18:49.19\00:18:52.96 and then you can apply it to the infected body part. 00:18:52.99\00:18:55.84 Let's say it's my hand... Sure, we'll put it right there 00:18:55.87\00:18:58.58 or it can be a red eye, infected eye. 00:18:58.61\00:19:01.07 Best for eyes, huh? It's excellent for eyes! 00:19:01.10\00:19:03.96 And, my husband had a sore eye one day, not long ago 00:19:03.99\00:19:10.75 and we did a hot and cold contrast to his eye 00:19:10.78\00:19:13.70 and put the raw potato poultice right over 00:19:13.73\00:19:17.98 his eye; closed his eye, right over the eyelid over the eye. 00:19:18.01\00:19:22.34 He rested for about 30 minutes, and that was the end of 00:19:22.37\00:19:26.19 his inflamed red eye. Is that right? 00:19:26.23\00:19:28.60 Now, is this antiviral as well? 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.19 Well that's a good question. 00:19:30.22\00:19:31.85 It does seem to have properties that do help with burns 00:19:31.88\00:19:34.93 or infected areas as well. 00:19:34.96\00:19:36.82 It does seem to normalize some of those tissues, 00:19:36.85\00:19:40.62 and so there are things in the potato well that seem to 00:19:40.65\00:19:45.06 draw out or absorb in this case substances that are 00:19:45.09\00:19:52.76 toxic, and to promote healing of the tissues underneath it. 00:19:52.79\00:19:57.01 So you do a contrast bath, and then you can put this 00:19:57.04\00:19:59.95 poultice on... How long do you keep it on? 00:19:59.98\00:20:02.43 Similarly to a charcoal poultice 00:20:02.46\00:20:05.01 for several hours, or overnight. 00:20:05.04\00:20:07.52 All right, so then can you do the same thing with an onion? 00:20:07.55\00:20:11.27 Oh, we're going next to the cabbage maybe... 00:20:11.30\00:20:13.72 Well, let's take a look at a cabbage. 00:20:13.75\00:20:15.19 Cabbage is excellent for bruised edematous tissues. 00:20:15.22\00:20:21.12 For example, if you have turned your ankle, 00:20:21.15\00:20:24.32 sprained an ankle, or have fallen and have a severe bruise 00:20:24.33\00:20:29.84 that's very painful and swollen. 00:20:29.87\00:20:31.92 It is also good for breastfeeding mothers 00:20:31.95\00:20:38.34 who have, maybe, what we call a mastitis or inflammation 00:20:38.37\00:20:41.66 or congestion of the breast tissue. 00:20:41.69\00:20:44.11 And, this type of treatment is excellent for that. 00:20:44.14\00:20:50.34 And how you do the cabbage is simply... 00:20:50.37\00:20:53.26 You can chop it up, or cut it up a bit, and then 00:20:53.29\00:20:58.48 take pieces of wax paper, or we can simply use the 00:20:58.51\00:21:04.27 plastic like we did here, and put it between the 00:21:04.30\00:21:08.19 cut-up pieces between the plastic, 00:21:08.22\00:21:10.32 and then just roll it with a rolling pin. 00:21:10.35\00:21:13.57 Or, blend it a bit in a food processor, whatever you have... 00:21:13.60\00:21:17.46 Or, mash it up a bit until it's kind of bruised and juicy 00:21:17.49\00:21:22.12 and moist. 00:21:22.15\00:21:24.00 And then it does its magic. It does! 00:21:24.03\00:21:26.12 And you simply can put it in a loose-fitting cloth 00:21:26.15\00:21:28.38 or paper towel... the same as you did the potato. 00:21:28.41\00:21:30.86 Again, the raw cabbage is best used in this situation. 00:21:30.89\00:21:34.30 I can't wait to try it... you don't want to get sick, 00:21:34.33\00:21:37.02 but I'm almost looking forward to trying some of these things! 00:21:37.05\00:21:40.66 They are a lot of fun; I've had a chance to try this too. 00:21:40.69\00:21:42.81 This is the onion which has a lot of good properties, 00:21:42.84\00:21:45.64 and I'll share a few of these with you. 00:21:45.67\00:21:47.49 First of all, we're going to get out the Kleenex here 00:21:47.52\00:21:49.73 for our eyes, because I am going to cut this onion, 00:21:49.76\00:21:52.18 and I'm not sure how hot it is. 00:21:52.19\00:21:53.85 I just purchased it this morning. 00:21:53.88\00:21:56.08 Now, the onion has a lot of excellent properties as well. 00:21:56.11\00:22:01.19 There was, a while back, croup and whooping cough went through 00:22:01.20\00:22:07.93 our Amish community, and a lot of children were whooping, 00:22:07.96\00:22:10.82 and there are different times in the springtime when viral 00:22:10.85\00:22:14.27 croup syndrome comes around, and we have even small babies 00:22:14.30\00:22:18.45 and toddlers coughing, and carrying on... 00:22:18.48\00:22:22.17 And what can we do for them? 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.35 And certainly one of the fine things that can be done 00:22:24.38\00:22:29.02 for them is to cut up, or grate up onion the same way 00:22:29.05\00:22:35.43 we grated the raw potato. 00:22:35.46\00:22:37.07 With our little grater here, we can grate it, or mash it up 00:22:37.10\00:22:40.06 and I will just pretend that I did that. 00:22:40.09\00:22:42.87 And then we will place our grated onion again 00:22:42.90\00:22:46.99 in a loosely woven cloth or a paper towel, 00:22:47.02\00:22:51.38 and then we can put it either on the chest, 00:22:51.41\00:22:55.73 or sometimes even for earaches, it can be put to the ear. 00:22:55.76\00:23:01.26 It has good properties in it. 00:23:01.29\00:23:03.20 Is it a vasodilator? 00:23:03.23\00:23:04.92 Well, it tends to have properties in it that tend to 00:23:04.95\00:23:09.39 be more of a relaxant, and so that in cases 00:23:09.42\00:23:17.17 where there is swelling and edema from a viral croup, 00:23:17.20\00:23:19.78 or from asthma, it tends to relax those smooth muscles. 00:23:19.79\00:23:22.66 It does also have some antibacterial properties 00:23:22.69\00:23:26.45 that are similar to antibiotic properties and can be used 00:23:26.48\00:23:34.66 for boils or abscesses as well. 00:23:34.69\00:23:37.20 But one that I really like to use it for is for 00:23:37.23\00:23:39.95 croup in small babies. 00:23:39.98\00:23:41.94 And I will often just take the grated up onion, 00:23:41.97\00:23:49.75 and will just simply put it right next to the bare skin 00:23:49.78\00:23:53.71 on the chest, and then just take a piece of plastic 00:23:53.74\00:23:57.13 to cover that because, of course, the onion is 00:23:57.16\00:24:00.95 good and juicy, mushy there. 00:24:00.98\00:24:02.63 Doesn't make the baby cry, does it? 00:24:02.67\00:24:04.39 Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to that much. 00:24:04.42\00:24:07.65 Babies do a little bit better. 00:24:07.68\00:24:09.57 And then we can take a towel or some type of 00:24:09.60\00:24:11.96 a heavier cloth, and cover that, and pin it securely 00:24:11.99\00:24:15.52 in place, so that it can stay on the baby's chest, 00:24:15.55\00:24:18.18 and often that will be... How long? 00:24:18.19\00:24:21.07 For several hours, or overnight. 00:24:21.08\00:24:23.40 Have you used any of these things in the mission field? 00:24:23.43\00:24:25.43 Have you ever used a poultice or different things 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.23 in the mission field? 00:24:27.26\00:24:28.53 Yes, I have had opportunity on numerous occasions, 00:24:28.56\00:24:31.99 but I would like to share with you one particular 00:24:32.02\00:24:34.67 story that stands out in my mind. 00:24:34.68\00:24:37.71 One day, a poor Cambodian widow lady brought her 00:24:37.74\00:24:41.74 12 to 13-year-old boy to me with what appeared 00:24:41.77\00:24:46.22 to be quite a serious condition. 00:24:46.25\00:24:48.84 He had been sick for several days. 00:24:48.87\00:24:50.64 In fact, he had not been able to keep his food down 00:24:50.67\00:24:53.40 well for several days. 00:24:53.43\00:24:55.03 And by the time she brought him to me, 00:24:55.06\00:24:57.54 his left eye was SO swollen that it was actually 00:24:57.57\00:25:03.32 pushing out of the orbit of the socket of the eye. 00:25:03.35\00:25:06.89 His eye was so affected that he couldn't even keep food down. 00:25:06.92\00:25:09.82 That's right, and he was nauseated. 00:25:09.85\00:25:13.68 He was vomiting from some irritation in the brain. 00:25:13.71\00:25:20.14 And, by the time I saw him, his eye was actually protruding 00:25:20.17\00:25:23.97 a bit out of the eye socket, and pointing downward... 00:25:24.00\00:25:27.26 And, he could not see. 00:25:27.29\00:25:29.99 When I asked him if he could count my fingers, 00:25:30.02\00:25:32.24 he could not see a thing. 00:25:32.27\00:25:33.62 I asked him where he hurt, and he pointed to the ENTIRE 00:25:33.65\00:25:38.29 left side of his head. 00:25:38.32\00:25:40.57 I realized his illness was, indeed, a serious situation... 00:25:40.60\00:25:46.55 that the inflammation could have well already traveled down the 00:25:46.58\00:25:51.70 optic nerve and this illness can cause a brain abscess, 00:25:51.73\00:25:56.94 or meningitis. 00:25:56.97\00:25:58.72 And yet the poor mother had no money. 00:25:58.73\00:26:01.28 The hospitals were very marginally supplied at that 00:26:01.29\00:26:04.18 time, and I said to her, "Do you want to see what God 00:26:04.21\00:26:08.01 can do with His simple things?" And she said, "YES" 00:26:08.04\00:26:11.85 That was my clue to work with him, 00:26:11.88\00:26:15.51 and with a prayer in my heart, I put his feet 00:26:15.54\00:26:18.97 in a hot foot bath. 00:26:19.00\00:26:20.32 I put hot and cold towels to the entire left side of his head... 00:26:20.35\00:26:26.24 for about 3 to 5 changes, hot and cold, 00:26:26.25\00:26:30.34 and then I put a LARGE charcoal poultice covering the left eye 00:26:30.37\00:26:35.75 and the entire left side of his head. 00:26:35.78\00:26:39.32 After we put this on, he was able to rest for the evening. 00:26:39.35\00:26:44.95 Several hours after he had rested, he woke up 00:26:44.98\00:26:47.89 actually feeling better, was able to eat an orange, 00:26:47.92\00:26:50.73 and actually keep it down. 00:26:50.76\00:26:52.52 The next morning when I checked his eyesight, 00:26:52.55\00:26:56.39 I found that he could actually count my fingers; 00:26:56.40\00:27:00.48 not well, but he could see enough to count fingers. 00:27:00.51\00:27:04.04 At that point, I let him go home with his mother 00:27:04.07\00:27:07.96 under the direction of one of our lay pastors who was 00:27:07.99\00:27:11.93 well-trained in natural remedies. 00:27:11.96\00:27:14.08 The mother continued the hot and cold water treatments, 00:27:14.11\00:27:18.24 and the charcoal poultices for another 2 weeks. 00:27:18.27\00:27:20.72 At the end of 2 weeks, I received a welcome letter... 00:27:20.75\00:27:23.94 that the young man was now pain-free, 00:27:23.97\00:27:26.07 and could now see well. 00:27:26.10\00:27:27.93 And this is a picture of him. Yes 00:27:27.96\00:27:30.79 That is just incredible. 00:27:30.82\00:27:32.07 That was really a miracle wasn't it? It truly was. 00:27:32.10\00:27:34.54 Well, it also was you stepping out in faith, 00:27:34.55\00:27:37.83 and using God's healing way, 00:27:37.86\00:27:41.64 you know, cautiously, and yet courageously. 00:27:41.67\00:27:44.74 We hope that as a result of today's program 00:27:44.77\00:27:47.24 you'll learn and have confidence to use 00:27:47.27\00:27:49.84 God's healing way. 00:27:49.87\00:27:50.97 And if you would like more information about the book, 00:27:51.00\00:27:53.32 get in touch with 3ABN. 00:27:53.35\00:27:54.99 Thanks for joining us!
