Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:43.19\00:00:44.85 I'm your host Don Mackintosh 00:00:44.88\00:00:46.08 We're glad you're with us today, 00:00:46.11\00:00:47.73 and we're also glad, Dr. Nedley, that you're with us, 00:00:47.76\00:00:50.37 and that you could take time out of your busy schedule 00:00:50.40\00:00:53.26 to help us with a real dilemma... Thank You! 00:00:53.29\00:00:56.11 That real dilemma is depression... Yes 00:00:56.14\00:00:59.61 From what you've told me, 00:00:59.65\00:01:01.11 this affects how many people in America? 00:01:01.15\00:01:02.90 Oh, it affects at least 14 million people. 00:01:02.93\00:01:05.79 About 10% of the population will get depression, 00:01:05.82\00:01:10.53 MAJOR depression at some point in their lifetime. 00:01:10.54\00:01:12.75 What about worldwide? 00:01:12.78\00:01:13.78 Worldwide, it's even bigger than that... 00:01:13.81\00:01:17.09 It's about 200 million people affected worldwide. 00:01:17.12\00:01:20.42 So, no matter if you're here in America watching, 00:01:20.45\00:01:22.69 or around the world, this is a BIG issue. 00:01:22.72\00:01:26.06 And today, we're going to talk about some HOPEFUL ways 00:01:26.09\00:01:28.67 to combat depression, that being those that are 00:01:28.68\00:01:30.85 related to lifestyle. 00:01:30.88\00:01:32.29 These are things that we can actually DO something about. 00:01:32.32\00:01:35.77 We can do something about depression, can't we? 00:01:35.78\00:01:38.03 Oh yes, it's largely a disease of nutrition and lifestyle. 00:01:38.06\00:01:42.59 And if we can get on the right program, 00:01:42.60\00:01:45.68 we can not only prevent it, but often treat it! 00:01:45.71\00:01:48.79 Now, before we kind of get into some of these 00:01:48.82\00:01:51.62 lifestyle factors, I might just mention to our viewers 00:01:51.65\00:01:55.10 that you can actually get Dr. Nedley's book. 00:01:55.13\00:01:58.45 He has written a new book on this; 00:01:58.48\00:01:59.98 it will be out in the very near future. 00:02:00.01\00:02:04.56 Please consider calling 3ABN and getting information 00:02:04.59\00:02:08.16 about that and how to get in touch with Dr. Nedley 00:02:08.19\00:02:11.05 because some of the things we cover today 00:02:11.06\00:02:12.59 ...there's all kinds of footnotes in your book! 00:02:12.62\00:02:14.99 I love that about a book! 00:02:15.02\00:02:16.27 Yes, we document everything from the scientific standpoint. 00:02:16.30\00:02:19.64 You know, your last book, "Proof Positive" 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.86 where you had over 2,000 different studies 00:02:21.89\00:02:24.40 where you could just have at your fingertips, 00:02:24.43\00:02:26.31 and you could find those references... 00:02:26.34\00:02:28.39 It's really helpful when you talk to people, 00:02:28.42\00:02:30.65 or when you talk to your physician to say, 00:02:30.68\00:02:33.00 "Hey, this is why I'm bringing this up. " 00:02:33.03\00:02:36.69 So it's a great resource. 00:02:36.70\00:02:38.76 Well let's talk about these lifestyle factors. 00:02:38.79\00:02:42.08 You mentioned here, that social support is very important 00:02:42.11\00:02:46.68 in combating or avoiding depression. Why do you say that? 00:02:46.71\00:02:51.25 Yes, well isolationism actually leads to depression 00:02:51.28\00:02:55.81 in many instances... not only in humans, 00:02:55.84\00:02:59.09 but also in the animal kingdom. 00:02:59.12\00:03:00.61 When animals are isolated, they will tend to 00:03:00.65\00:03:03.47 actually suffer symptoms of depression. 00:03:03.50\00:03:05.67 And the same is even more true of human beings. 00:03:05.70\00:03:09.04 And so, having a social support network which includes 00:03:09.07\00:03:12.93 not only good family, but close friends are important 00:03:12.94\00:03:16.80 in avoiding depression... 00:03:16.83\00:03:18.88 particularly for those that 00:03:18.91\00:03:20.30 already have a tendency to have depression. 00:03:20.33\00:03:23.04 So when someone says, who is depressed, 00:03:23.07\00:03:24.71 "I just need time alone to work through it" 00:03:24.74\00:03:26.75 that's not really a good model. 00:03:26.78\00:03:28.32 Not really a good model... No 00:03:28.35\00:03:30.56 And in fact, there's something even more important 00:03:30.59\00:03:33.21 than social support, and that is a sense of belonging. 00:03:33.24\00:03:37.69 A study at the University of Michigan took a look 00:03:37.72\00:03:41.17 at those factors; social support or a sense of belonging, 00:03:41.18\00:03:44.76 and they found out the sense of belonging was even 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.85 MORE important than social support... 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.60 So there are individuals that can have lots of friends, 00:03:48.63\00:03:51.47 lots of family, seem like they're well-socially-connected 00:03:51.50\00:03:55.42 but they don't have a sense that their family or friends 00:03:55.45\00:03:59.55 really BELONG to them. 00:03:59.58\00:04:01.24 They have no real sense of belonging, 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.61 and those people are also a setup for major depression. 00:04:03.64\00:04:06.68 So, the person who thinks that people are just around them 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.43 because of their money, because of their looks, 00:04:09.46\00:04:10.97 because of this, because of that... 00:04:11.00\00:04:12.35 and really senses like if all that 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.95 was gone, they would be gone too. 00:04:14.99\00:04:16.56 They're really set up for depression. 00:04:16.59\00:04:18.13 They're set up for it. 00:04:18.16\00:04:19.25 So how can you manufacture a sense of belonging 00:04:19.28\00:04:23.26 ...it can't be manufactured. 00:04:23.29\00:04:24.55 What gives you a sense of belonging? 00:04:24.58\00:04:25.98 Did the study say anything about that? 00:04:26.01\00:04:27.51 No, it didn't say anything about that. 00:04:27.54\00:04:29.95 That would be a subject for subsequent studies, 00:04:29.98\00:04:32.24 but there have been other studies that have alluded to it. 00:04:32.27\00:04:35.72 And that is, if you can get yourself involved in a cause 00:04:35.75\00:04:40.91 that is helpful to the community, 00:04:40.94\00:04:44.39 helpful to others, and that being a team cause... 00:04:44.42\00:04:49.83 where it brings other people together. 00:04:49.86\00:04:52.04 When you're working towards the same goals and mission, 00:04:52.07\00:04:55.72 that will often bring about the sense of belonging, 00:04:55.75\00:04:58.85 and the sense of closeness that you can't get 00:04:58.88\00:05:01.30 when you're just going to ballgames, or you're just 00:05:01.33\00:05:05.18 having social things that aren't really connected 00:05:05.21\00:05:08.32 to an overall purpose and goal. 00:05:08.35\00:05:11.49 So some kind of unifying... 00:05:11.52\00:05:13.19 "This is not only what I'm doing but this is how it relates to 00:05:13.22\00:05:17.43 why I'm here. " Exactly! 00:05:17.46\00:05:20.70 Well, that kind of reminds ya, 00:05:20.73\00:05:21.98 I mean, being a pastor as well as a nurse... 00:05:22.01\00:05:23.85 It reminds me of Jesus and the whole idea to reach 00:05:23.88\00:05:27.02 the whole world, and He talked about His disciples 00:05:27.05\00:05:29.12 as if they belonged to Him... 00:05:29.15\00:05:30.26 "I haven't lost one of these, or I don't want to lose any" 00:05:30.27\00:05:33.25 and they belong to Him and that type of thing. 00:05:33.28\00:05:35.80 So, would... I don't want to be self-serving 00:05:35.83\00:05:38.69 as a pastor here, but I have to ask you, 00:05:38.70\00:05:40.62 as a Christian physician, and as a scientist, 00:05:40.65\00:05:44.04 ...would going to church give a sense of belonging? 00:05:44.07\00:05:46.33 It could give a sense of belonging, but it may not either 00:05:46.34\00:05:49.16 A lot of churches are more social clubs... 00:05:49.19\00:05:52.29 than they are really working 00:05:52.32\00:05:54.92 toward a common purpose and goal, 00:05:54.95\00:05:57.35 and going there might be able to help in some form or fashion 00:05:57.38\00:06:01.00 just because of the social connectedness... 00:06:01.03\00:06:03.80 But really, you have to have an overall goal and purpose 00:06:03.83\00:06:06.79 in mind in order to get that sense of belonging. 00:06:06.82\00:06:08.91 So let's say you were going to church because you 00:06:08.94\00:06:11.44 felt as though those people that you were studying 00:06:11.47\00:06:13.61 the Bible with, or you had been helping were going to 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.42 be there and you needed to help them, 00:06:15.45\00:06:16.65 would that be a sense of belonging? Oh yes... 00:06:16.68\00:06:18.17 That would be a strong sense of belonging. 00:06:18.20\00:06:20.22 Hey... you're helping me out! 00:06:20.25\00:06:21.34 I think you should come to my church, 00:06:21.35\00:06:22.71 and we'll just share this. 00:06:22.74\00:06:24.78 Okay, the next thing I see they have mentioned here is 00:06:24.81\00:06:26.41 cognitive behavioral therapy... 00:06:26.44\00:06:29.06 Sounds like something you would have for dinner, 00:06:29.09\00:06:31.14 but what is it? 00:06:31.15\00:06:32.95 Well, actually it's a new type of counseling that has been 00:06:32.98\00:06:37.99 shown to be very effective as far as combating depression. 00:06:38.02\00:06:41.67 And I should mention, Don, that the usual type of 00:06:41.70\00:06:44.93 counseling that is being practiced in this country, 00:06:44.96\00:06:47.21 and that has been practiced for many years, 00:06:47.24\00:06:49.04 has never been shown to be 00:06:49.05\00:06:50.64 better than taking a placebo pill. 00:06:50.67\00:06:52.59 And a placebo is a fake pill, you mean... 00:06:52.62\00:06:54.40 Is a fake pill... a placebo pill is just a sugar pill, 00:06:54.43\00:06:57.21 or a fake pill that has no active ingredients, 00:06:57.22\00:07:00.45 and if we were to compare it to taking a fake pill, 00:07:00.48\00:07:04.55 the traditional forms of counseling 00:07:04.58\00:07:06.13 do NO better than that. 00:07:06.14\00:07:07.80 So the only thing they do is make money for somebody. 00:07:07.83\00:07:09.68 Essentially... and they take up time, 00:07:09.71\00:07:13.06 and they might produce some sort of friendship. 00:07:13.07\00:07:17.28 But as far as actually helping the depression, 00:07:17.31\00:07:20.14 it really doesn't seem to help any better than a placebo. 00:07:20.17\00:07:24.48 So when you mean regular kind of counseling, 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.18 do you mean... like where you go in and the person says, 00:07:26.21\00:07:28.93 "Well about your past, and what about this, 00:07:28.96\00:07:31.29 and what did your parents do," and this and that, 00:07:31.32\00:07:33.58 and trying to peel the onion skins off and... 00:07:33.61\00:07:38.77 Yes, that the usual form. 00:07:38.80\00:07:40.17 It's an open-ended; there's no time limitation 00:07:40.20\00:07:43.66 as far as how long this thing is going to continue. 00:07:43.69\00:07:46.45 And, it goes in to your childrearing... 00:07:46.48\00:07:49.94 It goes into the past events in your life, 00:07:49.95\00:07:53.71 and how they might have shaped the current situation 00:07:53.74\00:07:57.61 that you are in. 00:07:57.64\00:07:58.94 And, often that puts blames on others, 00:07:58.97\00:08:02.45 it puts blames on your childrearing, 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.26 but doesn't really help you, per se. 00:08:04.29\00:08:06.86 And of course, the therapist will say, 00:08:06.89\00:08:09.18 "Well, you need to deal with these suppressed issues. " 00:08:09.21\00:08:11.48 "You never dealt with this problem that you had with 00:08:11.51\00:08:13.58 your father 25 years ago. " 00:08:13.61\00:08:16.63 And so, you need to go through some sort of mental task 00:08:16.66\00:08:21.58 of actually dealing with it, 00:08:21.61\00:08:23.04 and that's supposed to help the depression. 00:08:23.07\00:08:25.54 It doesn't help. Doesn't help... 00:08:25.57\00:08:27.02 And unequivocally, it does not work. 00:08:27.05\00:08:30.29 So this cognitive therapy is different than that. 00:08:30.32\00:08:33.52 It's cognitive behavioral therapy that's talking about 00:08:33.55\00:08:37.02 your thoughts and your behavior. That's correct 00:08:37.03\00:08:39.87 It has been around now for about 20 years... 00:08:39.90\00:08:43.36 even though the science behind it is just now being confirmed. 00:08:43.37\00:08:48.23 Over the last 20 years, there have been now 00:08:48.26\00:08:50.99 MANY controlled studies that show that it is far superior 00:08:51.02\00:08:54.36 to taking a placebo pill. 00:08:54.39\00:08:55.71 This type of counseling works... 00:08:55.74\00:08:57.74 And it's a type of counseling that's focused on the 00:08:57.77\00:09:01.03 particular problem; it's focused on the individual, 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.79 and what that individual can do differently. 00:09:03.82\00:09:06.07 So it doesn't matter if you're parents, and your grandparents 00:09:06.10\00:09:09.57 and somebody else... little Johnny hit you with 00:09:09.60\00:09:11.35 a stick when you were 3 years old, 00:09:11.38\00:09:12.84 or you had a traumatic birth that you didn't know about... 00:09:12.87\00:09:15.42 All those different things are THERE, 00:09:15.45\00:09:17.09 but this kind of thing... is it the type of thing that 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.39 says, "You're here now, this is the issue, 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.80 what can YOU do about it? Exactly 00:09:21.83\00:09:24.35 That's the type of counseling. 00:09:24.38\00:09:25.70 That sounds a lot like my mother. 00:09:25.71\00:09:29.13 Maybe she knew about this. Maybe she knew about it! 00:09:29.16\00:09:31.66 Okay so, how does it work? 00:09:31.69\00:09:35.47 What else should we know about it? 00:09:35.50\00:09:36.55 How can we get involved in that? 00:09:36.58\00:09:37.77 What are the sources for it? 00:09:37.80\00:09:39.69 Well really, if you're wanting to get counseling, 00:09:39.72\00:09:44.28 you would want to know exactly 00:09:44.29\00:09:45.35 what type of counseling is being done. 00:09:45.36\00:09:48.34 And if it's the cognitive behavioral system, 00:09:48.37\00:09:50.85 chances are you've got a good counselor there 00:09:50.86\00:09:53.16 that's going to be able to work through some of the problems. 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.04 The interesting thing is this has also been shown 00:09:56.07\00:09:58.33 to be helpful for chronic depression. 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.50 Chronic depression is where you have had major 00:10:00.53\00:10:04.73 depression for at least 2 years. 00:10:04.76\00:10:07.22 And the study that was done recently, showed that the 00:10:07.25\00:10:09.78 average individual had been depressed for 20 years... 00:10:09.81\00:10:14.58 And a 20-year period of time is a LONG time to be depressed. 00:10:14.61\00:10:18.94 And most of these people have tried medicines; 00:10:18.97\00:10:20.83 they've tried all sorts of things that have not been 00:10:20.86\00:10:22.89 successful. 00:10:22.90\00:10:24.08 Well, what they did is, they put them on 00:10:24.11\00:10:26.83 one medication by the name of "Serzone" 00:10:26.86\00:10:29.48 AND put them through good cognitive behavioral counseling. 00:10:29.51\00:10:34.63 ...85% of those patients improved in a very rapid 00:10:34.66\00:10:38.35 period of time... better than what ANYONE 00:10:38.38\00:10:41.06 had ever predicted that chronic 00:10:41.09\00:10:42.82 depressed patients could get better, 00:10:42.86\00:10:44.62 at least percentage-wise... 00:10:44.65\00:10:47.74 How large a study was that? 00:10:47.77\00:10:48.75 How many people were in that study? 00:10:48.76\00:10:50.66 There was quite a few... 00:10:50.69\00:10:52.43 Actually I'd have to take a look here, 00:10:52.46\00:10:57.10 but I must have it in my footnotes. 00:10:57.13\00:11:00.53 I don't have it in the actual text here. 00:11:00.56\00:11:02.47 But it was a large enough study to be published in the 00:11:02.50\00:11:04.94 "New England Journal of Medicine" just this year. 00:11:04.97\00:11:07.34 Amazing! So actually, a lot of people that are out there today 00:11:07.37\00:11:10.45 watching and are languishing in depression, 00:11:10.46\00:11:13.02 maybe for 10, 15, 20 years, anybody over 2 years, 00:11:13.05\00:11:16.31 if they have this combination, they have some high hopes. 00:11:16.34\00:11:21.26 ...85% of those that were in the study, at least, had that hope. 00:11:21.29\00:11:24.89 That's correct. So how can you find that? 00:11:24.92\00:11:26.50 You've got a counselor and you're there... 00:11:26.53\00:11:28.08 How can you find out whether or not he's really giving you 00:11:28.11\00:11:30.05 the full meal-deal, so-to-speak. 00:11:30.08\00:11:31.59 Well if he starts going into past events, 00:11:31.62\00:11:35.81 and how they've shaped your life, that's a red flag. 00:11:35.84\00:11:38.91 Now, of course, a counselor is going to have to get a 00:11:38.94\00:11:42.63 history on you and help understand exactly where you are 00:11:42.66\00:11:45.93 and they're going to have to understand what some of the 00:11:45.96\00:11:47.65 issues are surrounding that... Still back there at age 5 or 6 00:11:47.68\00:11:50.16 and they stay there for 2 months, that's a problem. 00:11:50.19\00:11:52.34 That is a MAJOR problem, and I would drop that counselor. 00:11:52.37\00:11:57.71 Okay, so cognitive behavioral therapy is the way to go. 00:11:57.74\00:12:05.23 You have another one down here, "owning a pet" 00:12:05.26\00:12:06.74 Yes, now some people, because of their disability, 00:12:06.77\00:12:10.74 or because of their handicap, etcetera, may not be able 00:12:10.77\00:12:13.62 to go to church and get into a connected social group... 00:12:13.65\00:12:16.65 And for these individuals, we recommend if they don't 00:12:16.68\00:12:20.92 have one, to actually own a pet, 00:12:20.95\00:12:23.52 and to actually take care of that pet. 00:12:23.55\00:12:25.98 They will then feel a sense of belonging again. 00:12:26.01\00:12:28.72 They will have a sense of caring and love, 00:12:28.75\00:12:31.46 and they'll recognize that there is 00:12:31.49\00:12:32.70 someone that is dependent on them. 00:12:32.71\00:12:34.40 And this has been shown to be helpful in select 00:12:34.43\00:12:36.85 depressed patients. 00:12:36.88\00:12:37.96 So for patients that can't get out, 00:12:37.99\00:12:39.92 can't do this, can't do that... 00:12:39.95\00:12:41.35 Of course you can get depressed from having too many pets. 00:12:41.38\00:12:46.34 I was just talking to a lady the other day... 00:12:46.35\00:12:48.56 I was at her house; she had like 30 cats, 00:12:48.59\00:12:50.33 and this and that, and it took her all day to... 00:12:50.36\00:12:52.16 and I think she was literally depressed trying to keep up. 00:12:52.19\00:12:54.78 She was more like a zookeeper. 00:12:54.81\00:12:55.98 Yeah, you can overdo it. 00:12:56.01\00:12:59.44 So, does it matter what kind of pet you own? 00:12:59.45\00:13:02.09 Well actually, the studies haven't looked at that 00:13:02.12\00:13:05.61 in a lot of detail, but you'd want to own a pet that 00:13:05.64\00:13:08.08 can relate to you... 00:13:08.11\00:13:09.22 Probably a turtle wouldn't be the best. 00:13:09.25\00:13:12.12 A cat or a dog would probably be pretty good. 00:13:12.13\00:13:15.17 So if you're going to have an iguana, 00:13:15.20\00:13:16.44 it needs to be a loving iguana! 00:13:16.47\00:13:18.54 One that can interact with you. 00:13:18.57\00:13:19.91 Well, we've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley... 00:13:19.94\00:13:22.02 We've been talking about something that's really 00:13:22.05\00:13:23.69 no laughing matter, especially 00:13:23.72\00:13:25.13 if you're suffering from depression. 00:13:25.16\00:13:26.49 We're glad that you're watching today. 00:13:26.52\00:13:28.43 When we come back from the break, 00:13:28.46\00:13:29.77 We're going to talk about more lifestyle things that can 00:13:29.80\00:13:32.33 help us avoid or reverse depression. 00:13:32.36\00:13:35.05 We hope that you're telling others about the program, 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.15 and we hope that you ALL can join us when 00:13:37.18\00:13:39.81 we come back from this break. 00:13:39.84\00:13:43.65 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed a few pounds 00:13:43.68\00:13:46.36 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:13:46.39\00:13:48.96 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? How does that help? 00:15:06.46\00:15:07.79 Hydrotherapy USED to be used from the 1950s back, 00:15:07.83\00:15:15.37 even in the 1800s A LOT in mental institutions 00:15:15.40\00:15:19.69 simply because it worked... particularly for the 00:15:19.72\00:15:22.97 acute anxiety episodes, and for individuals 00:15:23.00\00:15:27.43 who are out of control, 00:15:27.44\00:15:28.48 they would put them in a sheet-wrap. 00:15:28.51\00:15:30.10 They would wrap them up in a wet sheet, 00:15:30.13\00:15:31.73 and then the body temperature would warm that up 00:15:31.76\00:15:33.48 and then they'd suddenly be asleep? 00:15:33.51\00:15:34.72 That's right, then by that time they'd be asleep 00:15:34.75\00:15:36.22 and they'd be under control, and they'd wake up 00:15:36.23\00:15:38.22 a whole lot better person than what they went to sleep as. 00:15:38.25\00:15:42.13 But there's been a resurrection of hydrotherapy. 00:15:42.16\00:15:44.96 A study done at Michigan State University 00:15:44.99\00:15:47.42 showed that taking a warm bath, 00:15:47.45\00:15:50.03 this would be between 99-103 degrees Fahrenheit 00:15:50.06\00:15:54.24 for about 20-30 minutes before going to bed, will enhance sleep 00:15:54.25\00:15:59.58 and that actually improves one 00:15:59.59\00:16:03.59 of the major causes of depression, 00:16:03.62\00:16:05.86 and that is a lack of sleep, or lack of being 00:16:05.89\00:16:08.92 on the appropriate circadian rhythm cycle. 00:16:08.95\00:16:11.62 And so it is a good general rule that about 20-30 minutes 00:16:11.65\00:16:16.32 a warm bath prior to bedtime; 00:16:16.35\00:16:18.54 it doesn't have to be real sophisticated... 00:16:18.57\00:16:20.23 It could be in a hot tub. 00:16:20.26\00:16:21.34 It just could be your own bathtub at home. 00:16:21.37\00:16:23.94 It can do a lot in enhancing sleep and actually 00:16:23.97\00:16:27.14 improving depression. 00:16:27.17\00:16:28.42 You haven't mentioned this, but I know a lot of places, 00:16:28.45\00:16:30.80 they practice this... and in hydrotherapy, of course, 00:16:30.83\00:16:34.30 I hope everyone caught that... 00:16:34.33\00:16:35.87 But so-called, ECT therapy, or electroshock therapy... 00:16:35.90\00:16:41.45 Does that have an effect that's positive on depression? 00:16:41.48\00:16:44.46 Well, it can help depression a great deal. 00:16:44.49\00:16:48.53 What it does is actually induce seizures, 00:16:48.56\00:16:51.34 and it does that under anesthetic. 00:16:51.37\00:16:55.65 And, by having the seizures, and having all of this 00:16:55.68\00:17:02.24 output of the neurotransmitters has actually been shown to 00:17:02.27\00:17:05.62 enhance mood in the long run, 00:17:05.65\00:17:07.97 and actually prevent as well as 00:17:08.00\00:17:10.82 cure rather severe forms of depression. 00:17:10.85\00:17:15.02 However, it does have significant side effects. 00:17:15.05\00:17:17.65 It will reduce memory. 00:17:17.66\00:17:19.28 In fact, even childhood memories that are 00:17:19.31\00:17:22.36 firmly embedded in you right now... can just be gone! 00:17:22.39\00:17:25.75 And even memories of things that happened a year ago 00:17:25.78\00:17:28.88 can be gone as a result. 00:17:28.91\00:17:30.85 And so, we really reserve this only for the very severely 00:17:30.88\00:17:36.27 depressed individual. 00:17:36.30\00:17:38.99 Fortunately, there's a new type of ECT coming up 00:17:39.02\00:17:42.48 actually utilizing powerful magnets that seems 00:17:42.49\00:17:46.04 to produce some of the same benefits without the 00:17:46.07\00:17:48.74 risks of depression. 00:17:48.75\00:17:50.16 And there, there's no seizure being induced; 00:17:50.19\00:17:52.73 it's not painful at all. 00:17:52.74\00:17:54.97 It's actually putting magnets on the head and the scalp 00:17:55.00\00:17:59.64 over the frontal lobe and other areas for 00:17:59.67\00:18:02.16 a 20-minute period of time... 00:18:02.19\00:18:03.71 And this is more preliminary research, 00:18:03.74\00:18:06.25 but it's showing that it might be just as effective as ECT 00:18:06.28\00:18:09.69 without the side effects. 00:18:09.72\00:18:11.52 Do they know why that works? 00:18:11.55\00:18:13.19 Well, there are theories as far as lining up the protons 00:18:13.22\00:18:17.18 and helping out there, but it's still under investigation. 00:18:17.21\00:18:24.34 So magnetic therapy... magnet therapy... Yeah 00:18:24.37\00:18:29.53 ...as a substitute for ECT. Interesting! 00:18:29.56\00:18:32.98 You have down here stress control measures. 00:18:33.01\00:18:35.53 This is VERY important. 00:18:35.56\00:18:36.70 About half of depressed patients are that way simply because 00:18:36.73\00:18:39.88 they have not coped adequately with their stress... 00:18:39.91\00:18:42.92 And we always put our depressed patients, if stress is a major 00:18:42.95\00:18:48.58 factor in there, we always deal with their coping 00:18:48.61\00:18:52.45 mechanisms of stress, and help counsel them... 00:18:52.48\00:18:56.07 very similar to cognitive behavioral therapy, 00:18:56.10\00:18:59.06 and how to deal with the stress. 00:18:59.09\00:19:00.83 So you identify what the stressors are, 00:19:00.86\00:19:02.86 and why they're there, 00:19:02.89\00:19:04.67 and then help them just get a handle on that. Yes 00:19:04.68\00:19:07.91 As well as dealing with the spiritual aspects of stress. 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.98 As far as appropriate planning is concerned, 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.15 many people are stressed out 00:19:13.18\00:19:14.20 just because they don't plan appropriately. 00:19:14.24\00:19:15.97 They have too much on their plate, 00:19:16.01\00:19:17.25 and they really aren't looking at things as far as 00:19:17.28\00:19:19.95 a day's activities, or a week's activities... ever do it! 00:19:19.98\00:19:23.23 And so appropriate planning is very important. 00:19:23.26\00:19:26.94 And then also, not being anxious about things that 00:19:26.97\00:19:29.95 you don't have any control over 00:19:29.98\00:19:31.69 is another important stress control measure... 00:19:31.72\00:19:36.72 And, in addition to that, the appropriate meditation. 00:19:36.75\00:19:42.62 Unfortunately, the world is using a type of meditation 00:19:42.65\00:19:45.97 that helps with stress control measures, 00:19:46.00\00:19:48.02 but actually suppresses the frontal lobe... 00:19:48.05\00:19:50.22 our decision-making lobe of the brain, 00:19:50.25\00:19:52.28 and that's the Eastern-type of meditation 00:19:52.31\00:19:55.49 where it's a self-hypnosis. 00:19:55.52\00:19:57.90 A type of balance meditation is active prayer to God. 00:19:57.93\00:20:02.35 This is where you can have the same benefit as far as 00:20:02.38\00:20:08.11 stress control is concerned as the Eastern meditation does, 00:20:08.14\00:20:11.37 but it's going to be a balanced form of meditation 00:20:11.40\00:20:14.06 that does not suppress the frontal lobe. 00:20:14.07\00:20:16.85 And like you said, if I recall, the frontal lobe is 00:20:16.88\00:20:21.79 where this depression really originates from... 00:20:21.82\00:20:24.06 that's what they're talking about. Exactly! 00:20:24.09\00:20:25.18 So if you suppress it, you're not really... 00:20:25.21\00:20:27.01 Wasn't it you that told me that in the brain, there are 00:20:27.04\00:20:31.15 100 billion neurons and they have to all be connected 00:20:31.16\00:20:34.32 in the frontal lobe is kind of the orchestra director... 00:20:34.35\00:20:37.84 That's right... it's the control center. 00:20:37.97\00:20:38.94 And so if you unconnect him, you might have some 00:20:38.95\00:20:42.52 benefits but that you really don't fix the conductor. 00:20:42.55\00:20:46.57 No, it's kind of like drinking alcohol. 00:20:46.60\00:20:48.51 Alcohol suppresses the frontal lobe, 00:20:48.54\00:20:50.47 but it makes some people feel better while 00:20:50.50\00:20:52.90 they're under the influence. 00:20:52.93\00:20:54.22 But unfortunately, alcohol is 00:20:54.25\00:20:56.44 going to end up causing depression. 00:20:56.48\00:20:58.07 It's one of the risk factors for depression in and of itself, 00:20:58.11\00:21:01.19 and the same I think is true of 00:21:01.20\00:21:02.53 the Eastern meditation techniques. 00:21:02.54\00:21:04.08 There are more short-term benefits, 00:21:04.11\00:21:05.89 but if we were to take a look at the long-term benefits, 00:21:05.92\00:21:08.90 if it suppresses the frontal lobe, 00:21:08.91\00:21:10.33 we're going to run into problems. 00:21:10.36\00:21:11.93 Okay, so if you really want to treat it, you need to 00:21:11.96\00:21:16.21 be involved with the higher power there... 00:21:16.24\00:21:18.43 God Himself with prayer, and focusing on that. 00:21:18.46\00:21:21.72 You mention also a few things about herbal therapies, 00:21:21.75\00:21:26.07 ginkgo and SAM-e... Tell us about those. 00:21:26.10\00:21:30.18 How do those help? 00:21:30.21\00:21:31.28 Yes, St. John's Wort has been shown in controlled studies 00:21:31.31\00:21:33.93 to be helpful for mild depression, 00:21:33.94\00:21:36.04 and I have used it in my practice in certain individuals 00:21:36.07\00:21:41.00 with success. 00:21:41.03\00:21:43.26 It can have some side effects as well. 00:21:43.29\00:21:46.35 We need to consider that these herbs act very 00:21:46.38\00:21:49.43 similarly to certain medications 00:21:49.46\00:21:52.26 and so we have to be alert to the side effects. 00:21:52.29\00:21:55.31 Ginkgo biloba is another one that can help. 00:21:55.34\00:21:57.70 It can also have some side effects in thinning the blood. 00:21:57.73\00:22:00.49 And then, third, the most popular is SAM-e. 00:22:00.52\00:22:03.73 It's a very expensive form of treating depression. 00:22:03.76\00:22:06.85 The SAM is "S" The "A" is adenosyl, 00:22:06.88\00:22:13.04 and the "M" is methionine. 00:22:13.07\00:22:14.42 Those are chemistry terms. 00:22:14.45\00:22:16.41 But the SAM-e has been shown to be very helpful in 00:22:16.44\00:22:20.47 those that have significant major depression, 00:22:20.48\00:22:23.85 as long as they're not bipolar or have manic depression 00:22:23.88\00:22:27.01 It can actually cause mania in susceptible individuals. 00:22:27.04\00:22:31.87 And you say it's expensive. Why... because you have to 00:22:31.90\00:22:33.65 form it in a laboratory or something... or what? 00:22:33.68\00:22:36.01 Well, it just hasn't been mass-produced enough, 00:22:36.04\00:22:39.99 and so you can buy it in your vitamin store, 00:22:40.02\00:22:43.01 or in your herbal store, or even your local pharmacy. 00:22:43.04\00:22:45.47 But to get enough, it takes 800 mg twice a day to 00:22:45.50\00:22:50.26 really help major rather severe depression, 00:22:50.29\00:22:53.51 and to get enough of that, would be about $250 per month. 00:22:53.54\00:22:57.22 Wow, yeah... that is expensive. 00:22:57.25\00:22:59.24 But I'm sure that some people would be willing 00:22:59.27\00:23:01.95 to pay ANYTHING to get over their depression. 00:23:01.98\00:23:03.89 Yes, that's true, and lower 00:23:03.92\00:23:05.11 doses can help as well in certain instances. 00:23:05.14\00:23:08.65 Now come back to this frontal lobe aspect, 00:23:08.68\00:23:11.40 and maybe we can just spend the rest of our time together, 00:23:11.43\00:23:14.97 we have about 5 minutes; let's focus in on that. 00:23:15.00\00:23:17.87 Since it's the major headquarters for this issue 00:23:17.90\00:23:21.82 of depression really, what should we do? 00:23:21.85\00:23:26.48 What can we say about it? 00:23:26.51\00:23:27.59 What should we do to enhance its function? 00:23:27.62\00:23:29.86 What should we avoid that decreases its function? 00:23:29.89\00:23:32.86 One of the things that I look at in any depressed individual 00:23:32.89\00:23:36.11 is "Are they living up to their conscience?" 00:23:36.14\00:23:38.77 You know the frontal lobe is the center of 00:23:38.80\00:23:40.84 spirituality, morality and the will. 00:23:40.87\00:23:42.83 This is what is really supposed to be directing us. 00:23:42.84\00:23:45.92 And if we are undergoing behaviors that are contrary 00:23:45.95\00:23:50.11 to what we know is right, 00:23:50.14\00:23:51.47 in order for us to feel okay about that, 00:23:51.50\00:23:54.80 we actually have to suppress our frontal lobe, 00:23:54.83\00:23:58.24 and, thus, our conscience doesn't bother us 00:23:58.27\00:24:01.14 as much, and we're not pricked as much. 00:24:01.17\00:24:03.28 And when we do this, we can end up with depression 00:24:03.31\00:24:07.40 as the end result. 00:24:07.43\00:24:08.47 Now that's not saying every depressed patient 00:24:08.50\00:24:10.59 is going against their conscience, 00:24:10.62\00:24:12.54 and that's why they got depressed, 00:24:12.57\00:24:13.95 but that could be a major hit playing a role as far as 00:24:13.98\00:24:17.74 the depression is concerned. 00:24:17.75\00:24:19.10 So you have to look for what their source of authority is 00:24:19.13\00:24:22.01 and whether or not they're living up to that. 00:24:22.04\00:24:23.86 What the people that live with say is right and wrong 00:24:23.89\00:24:26.48 and whether they're living up to that. 00:24:26.51\00:24:27.77 Yeah, the prophet Elijah is an example of that. 00:24:27.80\00:24:30.69 You know, he suffered from rather severe depression 00:24:30.72\00:24:33.45 but he ran away from Jezebel. 00:24:33.48\00:24:35.93 The Lord never told him to do that, 00:24:35.96\00:24:37.79 and finally, the Lord had to say... "What doest thou here?" 00:24:37.82\00:24:40.84 And so when a person is diagnosed with major depression, 00:24:40.87\00:24:45.10 I ask them, "What doest thou here?"... in a sense. 00:24:45.13\00:24:48.48 They need to reanalyze things. 00:24:48.52\00:24:50.26 Are they really living up to their conscience? 00:24:50.29\00:24:52.13 Have they done some things, and are continuing to do 00:24:52.16\00:24:57.36 some things that they know isn't quite right, 00:24:57.39\00:24:59.68 but don't know how to get OUT of that. 00:24:59.71\00:25:02.46 And that's where the spirituality comes in as well. 00:25:02.49\00:25:06.36 Enhancing the spiritual focus and actually providing 00:25:06.40\00:25:09.87 through divine intervention which is 00:25:09.90\00:25:13.25 extremely important in depression. 00:25:13.28\00:25:15.59 Having them take hold of the divine intervention 00:25:15.62\00:25:19.42 that can help them to change their lifestyle 00:25:19.45\00:25:21.90 so it lines up with their conscience. 00:25:21.93\00:25:23.52 So renewing their mind through the Bible promises, 00:25:23.53\00:25:26.12 and living up to the things they see in Scripture, 00:25:26.15\00:25:29.19 or within their source of authority, 00:25:29.22\00:25:31.28 and aligning themselves with that. 00:25:31.31\00:25:33.87 It's a very important aspect in treating depression. 00:25:33.88\00:25:36.47 So I imagine things, then, that we would want to avoid 00:25:36.50\00:25:39.22 that DON'T enhance the frontal lobe optimal functioning 00:25:39.25\00:25:44.12 would be like alcohol and caffeine and anything that... 00:25:44.15\00:25:47.33 Yeah, caffeine is a frontal lobe suppressant, 00:25:47.36\00:25:49.30 and caffeine has been shown to actually increase 00:25:49.33\00:25:52.38 the risk of depression, particularly when it's used 00:25:52.41\00:25:54.65 in large amounts. 00:25:54.68\00:25:56.08 What about watching comedy, and watching funny people on TV. 00:25:56.09\00:26:00.52 It seems like they'd all be laughing, 00:26:00.55\00:26:02.10 and they'd feel much better. 00:26:02.13\00:26:03.28 Well, for the short-term only. 00:26:03.31\00:26:05.54 Entertainment television actually suppresses 00:26:05.57\00:26:09.39 the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:26:09.42\00:26:11.90 It actually is a form of hypnosis if we were to 00:26:11.93\00:26:15.67 take a look at it real closely. 00:26:15.70\00:26:17.77 And as a result, it is NOT a good therapy as far as 00:26:17.80\00:26:22.16 depression is concerned. 00:26:22.19\00:26:23.35 In fact, it can actually LEAD to depression. 00:26:23.38\00:26:26.00 And so, if you're going to watch television, 00:26:26.03\00:26:29.04 you want to watch educational television. 00:26:29.07\00:26:31.28 And the way you can tell the difference is 00:26:31.31\00:26:33.82 pretty much instantaneous. 00:26:33.85\00:26:35.44 If there's a rapid scene of reference change, 00:26:35.45\00:26:38.23 every 3 seconds entertainment television 00:26:38.24\00:26:40.94 changes a scene of reference... 00:26:40.97\00:26:42.27 That is going to produce a hypnotic effect, 00:26:42.30\00:26:44.69 and it can lead to problems with the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:26:44.72\00:26:49.46 Educational television will stay on a subject 00:26:49.49\00:26:53.22 for a longer period of time, 00:26:53.25\00:26:54.48 as this program is doing fortunately. 00:26:54.51\00:26:56.97 And so there is no depression 00:26:57.00\00:26:59.62 of the frontal lobe that takes place 00:26:59.65\00:27:02.23 and you can learn from educational TV. while 00:27:02.26\00:27:05.58 utilizing the frontal lobe of the brain. 00:27:05.61\00:27:08.23 We've been talking to Dr. Neil Nedley 00:27:08.26\00:27:11.41 We've been talking about depression. 00:27:11.44\00:27:12.95 Let me ask you one question before we close out this program 00:27:12.98\00:27:16.44 and thank you so much for sharing with us 00:27:16.47\00:27:18.95 about depression today. 00:27:18.98\00:27:20.10 Can an individual that has trust and faith in God... 00:27:20.13\00:27:25.37 and is doing everything correctly, so-to-speak, 00:27:25.40\00:27:28.04 can that person, even though there are life stressors, 00:27:28.07\00:27:31.82 like losing a spouse, or this or that, 00:27:31.85\00:27:33.81 can they expect to live their life without major depression? 00:27:33.84\00:27:36.64 Even they can have major depression, 00:27:36.67\00:27:39.39 but the good news is they don't have to stay depressed 00:27:39.42\00:27:42.38 if they get on the good nutrition and lifestyle program. 00:27:42.41\00:27:45.35 We've been talking with Dr. Neil Nedley 00:27:45.38\00:27:47.62 We've talked about depression. 00:27:47.65\00:27:48.92 We've talked about what it is. 00:27:48.95\00:27:50.17 We've talked about how to avoid it. 00:27:50.20\00:27:51.66 How to prevent it. How to reverse it. 00:27:51.69\00:27:53.27 If you'd like more information, contact 3ABN, 00:27:53.30\00:27:56.12 and thanks for joining us today. 00:27:56.16\00:27:58.18
