"how to have a healthy pregnancy" 00:01:36.61\00:01:40.34 Now I'm sure that this is something that 00:01:40.37\00:01:42.76 you really have a burden for, isn't it? 00:01:42.79\00:01:44.28 Yes Don, I definitely have a burden for pregnant moms to 00:01:44.29\00:01:48.88 have a healthy delivery, and not just for their baby 00:01:48.91\00:01:52.44 but so that they could feel... 00:01:52.47\00:01:54.59 not just feel good during pregnancy, but afterwards! 00:01:54.62\00:01:59.52 It's a lifestyle change for them. 00:01:59.55\00:02:01.91 Now I know your work along with a team of physicians 00:02:01.94\00:02:04.48 in a hospital in your area and different things, 00:02:04.51\00:02:07.12 and you were mentioning to me, before we started here, 00:02:07.15\00:02:10.75 that there are a lot of people that don't' have 00:02:10.78\00:02:15.96 healthy pregnancies and they don't' have prenatal care, 00:02:15.99\00:02:18.48 they don't have those kind of things, 00:02:18.51\00:02:19.61 and this is kind of your ministry to get 00:02:19.64\00:02:20.76 out there, right? Yes 00:02:20.79\00:02:22.32 I want to educate the public on the importance of 00:02:22.35\00:02:26.33 having prenatal care and the importance of 00:02:26.36\00:02:31.61 the lifestyle change and diet change, 00:02:31.64\00:02:33.90 but also to help break prejudice down in the working 00:02:33.93\00:02:39.72 relationship between patients and doctors. 00:02:39.75\00:02:42.26 There are a lot of pregnant mothers that just 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.91 choose not to go in; they don't want to see the doctors 00:02:44.92\00:02:48.46 for some one reason... whether it be finances, 00:02:48.49\00:02:51.20 or just afraid or intimidated... 00:02:51.23\00:02:53.44 and so I try to work on their level, educating them, 00:02:53.47\00:02:58.29 to help them have a healthy pregnancy, 00:02:58.32\00:03:01.25 and also bring them in to have a visit... 00:03:01.28\00:03:06.05 a couple of visits or however often the doctors say 00:03:06.08\00:03:09.75 they need to see them, and to ensure 00:03:09.76\00:03:13.41 the health of the mother and the baby. 00:03:13.44\00:03:16.67 Now in talking about a healthy pregnancy, 00:03:16.70\00:03:18.94 you have 8 principals you're 00:03:18.97\00:03:21.24 going to share with us, I believe. Yes 00:03:21.27\00:03:22.97 And they are covered in your book, 00:03:22.98\00:03:25.65 but I think we also have them here for us as well. 00:03:25.68\00:03:28.57 Let's go through those 00:03:28.58\00:03:31.55 and then maybe you can work us through that. 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.48 Okay, I entitled this the BIRTHING acronym - 8 Laws, 00:03:33.51\00:03:39.87 and we encourage them in the following... 00:03:39.90\00:03:42.65 Okay, well let's talk about those one at a time. 00:03:54.19\00:03:56.53 What about bodily exercise... what do you mean by that? 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.52 And what kind of exercise and why? 00:03:59.55\00:04:01.94 Well, we encourage all of our pregnant moms to get 00:04:01.97\00:04:08.24 a lot of exercise. What do you mean by a lot? 00:04:08.25\00:04:11.64 Start out, if they are not used to exercise, 00:04:11.67\00:04:15.30 they should start out slow; let's just say 30 minutes a day, 00:04:15.33\00:04:18.63 and build maybe to an hour a day walking... 00:04:18.66\00:04:21.45 And, toward the end of their pregnancy, 00:04:21.46\00:04:26.53 they find just have an easy time of maybe not even 00:04:26.56\00:04:31.95 going 5-8 miles a day. ... 5-8 miles a day? Yes 00:04:31.98\00:04:37.75 Most of my pregnant moms... I have a small mountain 00:04:37.78\00:04:40.86 behind my house and they'll come and walk up... 00:04:40.89\00:04:44.04 it's about 1,200 foot mountain, it's not very big, 00:04:44.07\00:04:48.18 but towards the end, they're just taking that with no sweat. 00:04:48.21\00:04:52.36 Really? So how long does it take them to do that 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.29 mountain of 5-8 miles? 00:04:54.32\00:04:56.64 Well the mountain, they'd probably take about 45 minutes 00:04:56.67\00:05:01.97 one way. One way? Okay 00:05:02.00\00:05:05.42 So walking then? 00:05:05.45\00:05:06.66 Walking is probably the best exercise for pregnant moms. 00:05:06.69\00:05:10.07 Gardening is very good... just by stooping and 00:05:10.10\00:05:16.58 squatting and working in the garden helps 00:05:16.61\00:05:24.63 strengthening your leg muscles. 00:05:24.64\00:05:26.73 It tones up your muscles and open your pelvic cavity, 00:05:26.76\00:05:30.12 and it gets you ready. 00:05:30.15\00:05:32.30 You see, the pregnant mom needs to be in good physical shape. 00:05:32.33\00:05:36.16 She needs to have stamina for the birth, 00:05:36.19\00:05:41.58 and be in good condition. 00:05:41.61\00:05:44.34 Are there any hormones or anything that would not be 00:05:44.37\00:05:47.54 stimulated if you didn't exercise as well? 00:05:47.57\00:05:50.25 Well, there's a hormone that is stimulated by exercise. 00:05:50.28\00:05:56.19 It's in your endorphins and your endorphin level is 00:05:56.22\00:05:59.46 brought up... I think it can be increased by 60% 00:05:59.49\00:06:04.54 if you have good exercise and endorphin acts 00:06:04.57\00:06:09.38 as natural pain killer in your body. 00:06:09.41\00:06:12.13 So, you know what the Bible talks about in Exodus 1:15-18 00:06:12.16\00:06:17.21 ...it talks about the Hebrew women having easy deliveries 00:06:17.24\00:06:21.11 quick and easy and I believe they were in good physical shape 00:06:21.14\00:06:25.55 Whereas the Egyptian moms, they didn't evidently. 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.57 Probably they had maybe a lot of maid service. 00:06:28.60\00:06:33.95 So, get out there and walk in the fresh air, 00:06:33.98\00:06:36.28 do some gardening... these types of exercises are the best. Yes 00:06:36.31\00:06:41.52 And I tell my pregnant moms, you know, they like to walk around 00:06:41.55\00:06:44.51 in shopping malls... and sure, that's getting exercise, 00:06:44.54\00:06:48.60 but it's not the same; it's not stress-free. 00:06:48.63\00:06:50.96 It's not in the open outdoors. It's not stress-free for them 00:06:50.99\00:06:53.29 as well as their husbands because if they're in the mall 00:06:53.32\00:06:55.31 there are other problems that develop. That's very true. 00:06:55.34\00:06:57.43 I mean, not with my wife, of course, 00:06:57.46\00:06:58.88 but maybe not with most of the wives watching. 00:06:58.91\00:07:03.25 What about the fathers, is it important for him to exercise? 00:07:03.28\00:07:06.84 I encourage the fathers to walk with them because 00:07:06.87\00:07:09.51 I know that if they take an interest, 00:07:09.54\00:07:12.41 that they will encourage my pregnant moms to 00:07:12.44\00:07:18.42 do this every day to be a part of their lifestyle. 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.58 And toward the end, like I said, they feel SO good 00:07:21.61\00:07:24.74 that after they have the baby, they say, 00:07:24.77\00:07:27.31 "When can I walk again?" 00:07:27.34\00:07:28.51 It just feels so good, they 00:07:28.54\00:07:30.05 don't want to change their lifestyle. 00:07:30.08\00:07:31.84 And their pre-pregnant weight, comes back to them faster. 00:07:31.87\00:07:39.76 Okay... so they won't have the problem with 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.08 keeping on the extra pounds and different things 00:07:42.11\00:07:44.08 if they have a lifestyle of that. 00:07:44.11\00:07:45.43 It tones up their uterus and their muscles, 00:07:45.46\00:07:49.12 and prepares them for the birth which is 00:07:49.15\00:07:51.77 just like running a marathon. 00:07:51.80\00:07:53.67 What about the pure air? That's the second thing 00:07:53.70\00:07:56.57 "Inhale pure air" that you had on your list. 00:07:56.60\00:07:58.40 Well, with walking, of course, we encourage it to be outside 00:07:58.44\00:08:02.84 so that they can inhale the pure air. 00:08:02.87\00:08:05.81 It's good for their circulation for the mother and the baby. 00:08:05.84\00:08:09.34 It encourages regularity and it helps indigestion. 00:08:09.37\00:08:19.02 Also, when we're talking about just practicing 00:08:19.05\00:08:26.35 deep-breathing exercises while they're outside because 00:08:26.38\00:08:29.53 when they're in labor, we encourage what we call, 00:08:29.56\00:08:32.98 controlled breathing or slow breathing, 00:08:33.01\00:08:38.75 not the fast breathing. 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.54 So they don't hyperventilate... Right 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.70 Don't have as much oxygen that goes, maybe, 00:08:42.73\00:08:44.97 to the baby or something, is that why? 00:08:45.00\00:08:46.95 Well, if they do the fast breathing to help comfort 00:08:46.98\00:08:53.27 or ease the pain of the contractions, 00:08:53.30\00:08:56.51 not only could they hyperventilate, 00:08:56.54\00:08:59.16 they can get dizzy and they don't have enough energy. 00:08:59.19\00:09:03.63 You know, they last longer with slow diaphragm breathing. 00:09:03.64\00:09:08.36 So we encourage that... 00:09:08.39\00:09:10.45 They practice that beforehand. Yes 00:09:10.48\00:09:13.36 And we also have their husbands to know how to help them 00:09:13.39\00:09:17.56 during labor with the breathing, because when they get 00:09:17.59\00:09:20.49 to a point where they just 00:09:20.52\00:09:22.22 feel like they can't do it anymore, 00:09:22.25\00:09:25.30 all they have to do just have their husbands say... 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.60 "Well just follow me and I'll help you breathe" 00:09:27.63\00:09:31.06 So how soon do you start this part of it, 00:09:31.09\00:09:33.90 teaching the breathing? 00:09:33.93\00:09:35.31 Well, anytime before labor and delivery, 00:09:35.34\00:09:39.84 but we like to probably around 7 months. 00:09:39.87\00:09:43.01 The next thing you have on your list is REST! 00:09:43.04\00:09:45.61 Why is rest important and how much? 00:09:45.64\00:09:48.07 Well, of course, we tell our mothers that every hour 00:09:48.10\00:09:53.04 before midnight is worth 2 after. 00:09:53.07\00:09:55.41 And, do you know that as they're carrying the baby in utero, 00:09:55.44\00:10:01.17 in the uterus, that it's very important that they establish 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.33 regular hours for their baby. 00:10:04.36\00:10:07.58 Before they're born. Before they are born because 00:10:07.61\00:10:10.03 if they stay up all night, then you'll probably have a baby 00:10:10.06\00:10:13.60 that's going to stay up all night. 00:10:13.63\00:10:15.07 Do you think my baby will stay up all night? 00:10:15.10\00:10:16.60 If your wife stays up all night. 00:10:16.63\00:10:18.17 No, she doesn't, she goes to bed early. Good 00:10:18.20\00:10:20.35 So you're establishing a regular pattern already for your baby. 00:10:20.38\00:10:25.30 Now, I'd like the baby to sleep during church too... 00:10:25.33\00:10:27.40 so should she start sleeping during church? 00:10:27.43\00:10:29.59 Probably not. No 00:10:29.62\00:10:33.54 But a regular pattern.. 00:10:33.57\00:10:35.48 just a regular pattern because this baby can even 00:10:35.51\00:10:38.62 sense, through the uterine wall, light and darkness. 00:10:38.65\00:10:43.10 Sounds - it can hear your voice. It can hear music. 00:10:43.11\00:10:49.27 And it's important that the baby already gets 00:10:49.30\00:10:54.07 established with a regular schedule. 00:10:54.10\00:10:57.60 Okay, what about temperance? 00:10:57.63\00:10:59.64 What does that have to do with a healthy pregnancy? 00:10:59.67\00:11:03.76 Well, of course, we encourage not over-exercising, 00:11:03.77\00:11:09.41 not to get too much sunshine or to oversleep. 00:11:09.44\00:11:16.90 But temperance also includes abstinence. 00:11:16.93\00:11:20.73 And so, I would encourage all pregnant moms not to smoke, 00:11:20.76\00:11:28.47 not to drink alcohol, drugs. 00:11:28.50\00:11:32.50 And so, we would encourage abstaining from those things. 00:11:32.53\00:11:35.27 What does alcohol, smoking, and drugs do to the pregnancy? 00:11:35.30\00:11:40.20 Well, of course, that would be considered damaging for the 00:11:40.23\00:11:44.87 newborn baby; for example, like smoking, 00:11:44.90\00:11:48.99 there's a higher risk of ADHD 00:11:49.02\00:11:51.72 which is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, 00:11:51.75\00:11:56.73 and SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome. 00:11:56.76\00:12:02.38 There is a larger percent on smokers, 00:12:02.41\00:12:05.67 and they are also of smaller 00:12:05.70\00:12:08.15 gestational weight for their size. 00:12:08.18\00:12:12.46 They don't have enough of amniotic fluid or enough 00:12:12.49\00:12:16.83 whatever that they need to carry the baby or... 00:12:16.86\00:12:19.44 It can cause some damage there with smoking, 00:12:19.47\00:12:23.51 and they're smaller and their lungs would be more 00:12:23.52\00:12:26.60 underdeveloped. 00:12:26.63\00:12:27.83 I've heard some physicians and others talk about 00:12:27.86\00:12:30.43 the fact that they shouldn't really be eating chocolate, 00:12:30.46\00:12:32.47 is that right or wrong, according to you... 00:12:32.50\00:12:35.64 What's your opinion on it? 00:12:35.67\00:12:36.97 You mean the caffeine in the chocolate? Yes 00:12:37.00\00:12:40.45 Well I just find that more of my pregnant moms that 00:12:40.48\00:12:45.57 have the caffeine intake, they would have more 00:12:45.58\00:12:50.27 heart sensitivity, and if they don't sometimes their babies do. 00:12:50.30\00:12:55.72 And I could pick it up just maybe some heart murmurs. 00:12:55.75\00:12:59.97 You know, I could always tell when they 00:13:00.00\00:13:01.71 had a piece of chocolate or... 00:13:01.74\00:13:03.88 You mean a murmur, or do you mean it just speeds up 00:13:03.91\00:13:06.22 or palpitations? Heart palpitations. 00:13:06.25\00:13:10.73 So that's something else to avoid. 00:13:10.76\00:13:13.52 Anything else... temperance, someone had said once, 00:13:13.55\00:13:16.77 and let's see if you agree with this is "total abstinence from 00:13:16.80\00:13:20.03 that which is harmful but the moderate use of 00:13:20.06\00:13:22.33 that which is good"... Is that a good definition? 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.41 That's a good definition. Okay 00:13:24.44\00:13:27.86 Well, let's talk a little bit more about 00:13:27.89\00:13:30.92 this next one that you have down... 00:13:30.95\00:13:32.57 We've talked about bodily exercise. 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.19 We've talked about pure air. 00:13:34.22\00:13:35.59 We've talked about rest. 00:13:35.62\00:13:37.16 Oh, I forgot to ask you about rest... How much rest? 00:13:37.19\00:13:40.54 Oh, well, we encourage about 7 or 8 hours a night. 00:13:40.57\00:13:48.48 But, Don, toward the end of pregnancy, 00:13:48.51\00:13:51.35 you never know when they're going to go into labor, 00:13:51.38\00:13:55.22 and I could say as a midwife, 00:13:55.25\00:13:57.37 most of my calls would be at 2 o'clock in the morning. Great! 00:13:57.40\00:14:01.98 So if they had a hard day and they worked real hard, 00:14:02.01\00:14:09.26 got a lot of exercise, and then went to bed so tired, 00:14:09.29\00:14:13.04 and then got up in an hour or 2 and went into labor, 00:14:13.07\00:14:15.31 they're already starting off tired. 00:14:15.34\00:14:17.73 So I do encourage, towards the end of pregnancy, 00:14:17.76\00:14:20.31 maybe taking short naps. 00:14:20.34\00:14:21.91 Short naps, more rest as the pregnancy goes on 00:14:21.94\00:14:25.05 just to be ready. Right 00:14:25.08\00:14:26.72 Yes, well that makes excellent sense. 00:14:26.75\00:14:30.73 Well let's go to the next one that you had here. 00:14:30.76\00:14:32.99 We have bodily exercise, inhale pure air, rest, temperance, 00:14:33.00\00:14:37.34 and hydrotherapy! 00:14:37.35\00:14:40.31 Talk to me a little bit about that. 00:14:40.34\00:14:41.49 Okay, hydrotherapy includes external and internal. 00:14:41.52\00:14:45.79 So we talked about why it's important to 00:14:45.82\00:14:48.73 drink a lot of water... 6-8, 10 glasses. Yes 00:18:19.66\00:18:21.65 And about 30% of it is replaced every 3 hours, 00:18:21.68\00:18:26.01 and it's very important that they drink enough water 00:18:26.04\00:18:30.33 ...the baby moves freely 00:18:30.36\00:18:33.28 in the amniotic fluid and is protected by the amniotic fluid, 00:18:33.31\00:18:37.90 and the umbilical cord that is attached to the baby 00:18:37.93\00:18:41.38 and the placenta is protected so that it doesn't get pinched. 00:18:41.41\00:18:46.67 If they didn't have enough fluid and the umbilical cord 00:18:46.70\00:18:50.72 could get pinched off, it would cut off the oxygen supply 00:18:50.75\00:18:55.14 to the baby or nutrition. 00:18:55.17\00:18:58.58 So if they're going to get up during this program 00:18:58.61\00:18:59.94 and get something, it's best to go get a glass of water... 00:18:59.97\00:19:02.33 Go get a glass of water and come back, right? Yes 00:22:09.74\00:22:11.74 Well you know, that's such a common thing though... 00:22:11.77\00:22:14.00 I hear it all the time, "Well, she's pregnant" 00:22:14.03\00:22:17.19 So she can have this or have that, 00:22:17.22\00:22:19.01 and the counsel there given and what you're recommending as well 00:22:19.04\00:22:22.55 is... no that's not really wise. " 00:27:07.55\00:27:10.63 I find that Christians have the most peaceable births 00:27:10.66\00:27:14.09 that I've ever seen. 00:27:14.12\00:27:15.40 That's a great promise! 00:27:15.43\00:27:17.39 A sound mind... you want that not only for yourself, 00:27:17.42\00:27:20.05 but for your baby as well, right?
