Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:51.01\00:00:54.00 I'm Don Macintosh, your host, and today we're joined with 00:00:54.03\00:00:57.77 Dr. Kevin Bryant from Wichita, Kansas 00:00:57.80\00:01:00.65 He is a specialist in family practice, 00:01:00.68\00:01:02.94 and focuses on helping the older adult or geriatric concerns, 00:01:02.97\00:01:07.32 and one of his special things that he likes to study 00:01:07.35\00:01:10.88 are natural remedies for many different concerns... 00:01:10.91\00:01:14.06 and also with those who are 00:01:14.09\00:01:15.71 getting older, isn't that right, doctor? 00:01:15.75\00:01:16.95 That's right since my area of practice is for the elderly, 00:01:16.98\00:01:21.54 in the geriatric population, looking at something 00:01:21.55\00:01:26.12 in the area of natural remedies, 00:01:26.15\00:01:27.85 has always been an interest of mine. 00:01:27.88\00:01:30.45 Now, natural remedies, when we talk about natural remedies, 00:01:30.48\00:01:34.29 some people probably get a little frightened... 00:01:34.32\00:01:36.05 that sounds alternative, sounds kind of, 00:01:36.06\00:01:38.77 you know, maybe on the fringe. 00:01:38.80\00:01:40.96 You are a medical doctor, correct? 00:01:40.99\00:01:42.75 That's correct, and we do want to say right at the beginning, 00:01:42.78\00:01:48.24 that any of the things we're going to be talking about 00:01:48.27\00:01:51.84 ...if someone listening says, "That sounds like something 00:01:51.87\00:01:56.48 I'd like into further," it's important that they 00:01:56.49\00:01:59.49 do talk to their physician, 00:01:59.50\00:02:01.35 because some of the herbal preparations that we're 00:02:01.38\00:02:05.07 going to be talking about may interfere or interact 00:02:05.10\00:02:08.57 with medications they're on, and they need to 00:02:08.60\00:02:10.77 be sure that their physician is aware of that. 00:02:10.78\00:02:13.85 You literally see hundreds of 00:02:13.88\00:02:15.34 patients a year... isn't that right? 00:02:15.37\00:02:16.74 You have many nursing homes, 00:02:16.78\00:02:18.65 and many patients you see. Right 00:02:18.68\00:02:21.16 And many of them are on medications, 00:02:21.19\00:02:24.24 but what's the difference between pharmaceutical, 00:02:24.27\00:02:26.96 or a medication that's made and then sold in a pharmacy, 00:02:26.99\00:02:31.31 and a natural remedy? 00:02:31.34\00:02:34.22 Well, one thing that has been interesting to me 00:02:34.25\00:02:39.15 as I've looked at this area is looking at the difference 00:02:39.16\00:02:42.62 the way plants produce chemicals, 00:02:42.65\00:02:47.29 and the way they're produced in a chemistry lab. 00:02:47.32\00:02:51.53 When they're produced in a chemistry lab, 00:02:51.56\00:02:54.71 the chemical compounds that are made there, 00:02:54.72\00:02:58.80 the drugs, the pharmaceutical agents, 00:02:58.83\00:03:01.99 have what we call left and right-hand forms. 00:03:02.02\00:03:06.83 They're like our hands, and they can't be 00:03:06.86\00:03:10.25 superimposed on each other, but they're mirror images. 00:03:10.28\00:03:13.21 So, in any given drug, there's a right hand, 00:03:13.24\00:03:16.46 there's a left hand... 00:03:16.49\00:03:17.55 Right... left and right hand form of that drug. 00:03:17.56\00:03:21.19 So you have a right-handed aspirin, 00:03:21.22\00:03:23.04 and you have a left-handed aspirin... whatever 00:03:23.05\00:03:25.31 Now, the importance of that is that our bodies 00:03:25.34\00:03:30.26 ONLY interact with the left hand form. 00:03:30.29\00:03:34.28 And so, pharmaceuticals produced in the lab, 00:03:34.31\00:03:37.44 produced a mixture, a 50:50 mixture 00:03:37.47\00:03:39.82 of left and right hand, so half of the drug 00:03:39.83\00:03:44.69 is not interacting with the body and producing the effect 00:03:44.72\00:03:48.11 that it's designed to produce; only the left hand. 00:03:48.14\00:03:51.42 So what... I mean, to use a simple, you got this pill, 00:03:51.45\00:03:54.40 only half of it is working, is what you're saying, 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.51 and what's the other half doing then? 00:03:56.54\00:03:59.04 The left hand form is the one that's actually active 00:03:59.07\00:04:01.94 and producing the effect that the drug is designed to do. 00:04:01.97\00:04:07.34 In the plant kingdom, when plants produce compounds, 00:04:07.37\00:04:12.83 that are effective in our body, they only produce 00:04:12.86\00:04:16.98 the left hand side 100% 00:04:17.01\00:04:20.46 Some people think that may have something to do with 00:04:20.49\00:04:24.34 a difference that we see in the amount of side effects 00:04:24.37\00:04:28.49 that are evident. 00:04:28.50\00:04:30.09 You only have to pick up a Physicians' Desk Reference 00:04:30.12\00:04:33.92 which is the manual that goes over all the pharmaceutical 00:04:33.95\00:04:37.77 drugs and look through the section on adverse reactions, 00:04:37.80\00:04:42.22 or side effects to realize that they do cause side effects. 00:04:42.25\00:04:47.97 So that pill, whatever it is we take from the pharmacy, 00:04:48.00\00:04:51.89 half of it really works; the other half we're not sure 00:04:51.92\00:04:54.31 what it's doing, but it's that right hand versus left hand. 00:04:54.34\00:04:57.54 That doesn't mean you're saying to people... 00:04:57.57\00:04:59.96 Do away with your medicines, 00:04:59.99\00:05:01.12 or stop them, or anything like that. No 00:05:01.15\00:05:02.83 It's just kind of a way of thinking... Understanding 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.17 Understanding why it is that the herbal preparations, 00:05:06.20\00:05:09.56 by and large, seem to have a less number of side effects. 00:05:09.59\00:05:13.75 What are some of the things you're going to 00:05:13.78\00:05:14.99 talk to us about today? 00:05:15.02\00:05:16.38 We're going to talk about some of these natural remedies. 00:05:16.41\00:05:18.12 What are some of the things you're going to be covering? 00:05:18.13\00:05:19.84 Well, we want to look at some of the concerns that our 00:05:19.87\00:05:22.45 geriatric population are facing. 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.37 And, we've talked about the difference between 00:05:25.40\00:05:28.90 pharmaceutical agents, and herbal preparations. 00:05:28.93\00:05:31.73 We want to spend a few minutes looking at 00:05:31.74\00:05:33.90 some natural remedies for ophthalmology or eye concerns. 00:05:33.93\00:05:38.98 Many of the elderly population are facing cataracts, 00:05:39.01\00:05:43.54 or blindness due to macular degeneration. 00:05:43.57\00:05:46.96 We're going to spend a little bit of time on prostate problems 00:05:46.99\00:05:51.55 And then something that many of the older population fear 00:05:51.58\00:05:56.24 is the diagnosis of Alzheimer disease. 00:05:56.27\00:05:59.10 What can we do to maybe prevent or treat it 00:05:59.13\00:06:01.49 with natural remedies. 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.05 And then lastly, focus on osteoporosis. 00:06:03.08\00:06:07.96 Sounds very interesting. 00:06:07.99\00:06:11.04 I know my grandfather lived with me the last 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.86 3-1/2 years of his life. 00:06:13.89\00:06:15.17 I was able to... had the privilege of taking of him. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.53 And he did have problems with cataracts and whatnot. 00:06:17.56\00:06:21.31 What can you tell us about natural remedies for cataracts, 00:06:21.34\00:06:24.18 and the other big word, I think you used, was 00:06:24.21\00:06:26.26 macular degeneration, right. 00:06:26.29\00:06:28.49 Let's talk about cataracts first... Okay 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.21 Some researchers in Baltimore did some interesting 00:06:31.24\00:06:36.85 studies on a geriatric population where they 00:06:36.88\00:06:40.41 did something simple as looking at the amount of 00:06:40.44\00:06:45.14 fruits and vegetables that were in their diet, 00:06:45.17\00:06:49.01 and then they followed them to see how many of them 00:06:49.02\00:06:52.68 developed cataracts. 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.60 And what they found was that if they divided the group 00:06:54.63\00:07:00.35 into 2 groups; one group eating 3.5 or more servings 00:07:00.38\00:07:06.22 a day of fruits and vegetables, versus the group that 00:07:06.25\00:07:09.20 ate less than 3.5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. 00:07:09.23\00:07:13.28 The difference between those 2 groups in developing cataracts 00:07:13.31\00:07:17.93 was incredible! 00:07:17.96\00:07:19.16 In fact, the group that ate less than 3.5 servings a day 00:07:19.19\00:07:23.69 had 13 times the risk of developing cataracts. 00:07:23.70\00:07:29.38 So development of cataracts is not necessarily just 00:07:29.41\00:07:33.33 something that's in a person's fate. 00:07:33.36\00:07:35.53 Something as simple as eating more than 00:07:35.56\00:07:38.50 3.5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day can help 00:07:38.53\00:07:41.18 reduce that risk. 00:07:41.21\00:07:42.66 So if you don't have cataracts, and you're watching today... 00:07:42.69\00:07:45.14 Hey, start eating those fruits and vegetables, 00:07:45.15\00:07:48.19 and you're going to avoid those... Right! 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.11 That's good news... I mean, I thought you were going to say 00:07:51.14\00:07:55.52 that it was helpful, but I didn't know it was THAT helpful. 00:07:55.55\00:07:58.78 That was a phenomenal finding in that study. 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.74 Now the other aspect they looked at was 00:08:01.75\00:08:03.81 macular degeneration. 00:08:03.84\00:08:05.33 Which means... what does that mean? 00:08:05.36\00:08:06.69 That's a deterioration of the retina. 00:08:06.72\00:08:09.12 And they found, again... 00:08:09.15\00:08:10.77 Just a minute, what is the retina? 00:08:10.80\00:08:11.88 What does the retina do? 00:08:11.91\00:08:12.88 The light comes in the eye, and then what... 00:08:12.91\00:08:14.99 And it is focused on the back of the eye... 00:08:15.02\00:08:17.47 So these are the cells on the back of the eye that 00:08:17.50\00:08:19.83 the light is focused on. 00:08:19.86\00:08:22.63 And the area that's most important is called the "macula" 00:08:22.66\00:08:26.95 The macula is part of the retina 00:08:26.98\00:08:29.10 where the light focuses on. Right 00:08:29.11\00:08:31.16 And deterioration of that area causes a considerable 00:08:31.17\00:08:35.67 amount of the blindness in America. 00:08:35.68\00:08:37.92 They found a similar type of thing where those that were 00:08:37.95\00:08:42.53 low in the fruits and vegetables had twice the rate 00:08:42.56\00:08:48.85 of this disease process occurring. 00:08:48.88\00:08:51.68 So fruits and vegetables... 00:08:51.71\00:08:53.01 Was mother right? Eat your carrots? 00:08:53.04\00:08:55.35 They do help! They really do. 00:08:55.38\00:08:58.02 So maybe if you're watching, 00:08:58.03\00:08:59.90 you'll want to go and get a carrot, that would be great! 00:08:59.93\00:09:02.47 Let's go on and ask what kind of things can help in 00:09:02.48\00:09:08.40 these other areas you mentioned. 00:09:08.43\00:09:09.43 I think the other one you mentioned was prostate. 00:09:09.46\00:09:11.36 Yeah, for men, by the age of 75 in America today, 00:09:11.37\00:09:16.30 50% of men are having problems with their prostate, 00:09:16.33\00:09:21.08 and one of the newest herbal preparations that is 00:09:21.11\00:09:27.47 finding some real help in this area is one called... 00:09:27.48\00:09:31.42 "saw palmetto" 00:09:31.45\00:09:34.36 As the name might indicate, it's taken from an extract 00:09:34.39\00:09:38.55 from the berry of a palm tree... 00:09:38.58\00:09:41.06 And they found that in various studies where they compare it 00:09:41.09\00:09:49.26 against a drug, a pharmaceutical agent called "Proscar," 00:09:49.30\00:09:57.46 the studies looking at those 2, comparing them, 00:09:57.49\00:10:01.39 we find that it's just as effective. 00:10:01.42\00:10:04.36 Just as effective, but less side effects, 00:10:04.39\00:10:07.98 although it does have some small amount of side effects 00:10:08.01\00:10:12.78 with headaches, nausea, dizziness. 00:10:12.79\00:10:14.86 One other thing we have to mention about this 00:10:14.89\00:10:19.26 it does affect what we call "PSA" level. 00:10:19.27\00:10:23.58 What's that? A fancy name for... 00:10:23.61\00:10:26.11 "Prostatic assay" which is measuring for 00:10:26.14\00:10:31.61 the possibility of prostate cancer. 00:10:31.64\00:10:34.49 So if you take this, it could mask a problem? 00:10:34.52\00:10:38.64 It can mask a problem. Right 00:10:38.67\00:10:40.50 So that's again coming back to the reason why it's 00:10:40.53\00:10:43.05 important to let your physician know if 00:10:43.08\00:10:46.18 you are taking some of these herbal medications 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.54 because of the effect they can have on lab tests, 00:10:49.57\00:10:52.65 and it's also important to mention here that 00:10:52.68\00:10:56.40 saw palmetto is really only to be used for 00:10:56.43\00:10:59.53 prostate enlargement problems; 00:10:59.54\00:11:01.78 it's not really useful for prostate cancer. 00:11:01.81\00:11:06.66 All right, many of these things you can get over-the-counter, 00:11:06.69\00:11:10.91 in a health food store, or some place... 00:11:10.94\00:11:13.80 How do you now whether or not you're getting a good 00:11:13.83\00:11:16.15 source of palmetto. 00:11:16.18\00:11:19.72 And that's an important point. 00:11:19.75\00:11:21.38 In Europe, herbal medications are used extensively. 00:11:21.41\00:11:30.06 In Germany, 90% of the prescriptions written by 00:11:30.09\00:11:33.96 physicians are for herbal medication. 00:11:33.99\00:11:36.60 Is that right, 90%! Of medical doctors! 00:11:36.63\00:11:40.12 Of medical doctors in Germany 00:11:40.15\00:11:41.57 are writing for herbal preparations, 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.58 and so they've developed a much better regulatory system 00:11:43.61\00:11:48.22 for making sure that it's standardized in quality control. 00:11:48.25\00:11:53.58 We don't have that yet here in America, 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.75 and so there is some concern that some preparations 00:11:56.78\00:12:00.08 may not be as quality controlled. 00:12:00.11\00:12:03.69 One important helpful point on that is if 00:12:03.72\00:12:07.75 on the bottle, and you're looking at the 00:12:07.78\00:12:11.52 active ingredient portion, 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.36 if it says "standardized" in the dosage area, 00:12:13.39\00:12:18.10 that this is standardized, then that is indicating 00:12:18.13\00:12:22.56 that they've had some quality control, 00:12:22.57\00:12:25.34 and that you can be a little more sure that 00:12:25.35\00:12:27.58 that's the amount that's in there. 00:12:27.61\00:12:30.38 Another question about that over-the-counter business... 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.58 You find out it's standardized and whatnot, 00:12:33.61\00:12:36.04 but REALLY, what you're saying is, you could help yourself, 00:12:36.07\00:12:40.21 but you could also endanger yourself if you're not 00:12:40.24\00:12:42.99 communicating with your physician. Correct 00:12:43.02\00:12:47.52 Well, we've talked about saw palmetto for prostate. 00:12:47.55\00:12:54.83 We've talked about fruits and vegetables 00:12:54.86\00:12:57.42 for cataracts and for macular degeneration. 00:12:57.45\00:13:01.97 We've been talking with Dr. Kevin Bryant, 00:13:02.00\00:13:04.42 he's a specialist in family practice from Wichita, Kansas 00:13:04.45\00:13:08.07 He has a real interest in using natural remedies 00:13:08.10\00:13:11.33 for the things that affect older Americans 00:13:11.36\00:13:14.34 and we hope that if you joined us, 00:13:14.37\00:13:17.04 you'll come back and listen after the break. 00:13:17.08\00:13:19.00 We're going to be talking about some other 00:13:19.03\00:13:20.92 fascinating discoveries, and things that we 00:13:20.95\00:13:23.71 think can be of help to you, and perhaps your physician 00:13:23.72\00:13:26.22 as you work together, and we hope that you join us! 00:13:26.26\00:13:28.73 Have you found yourself wishing 00:13:44.17\00:13:45.53 that you could shed a few pounds? 00:16:22.98\00:16:25.41 Okay, some interesting things here... 00:16:25.44\00:16:27.35 In Alzheimer disease, it's simply put as a 00:16:27.38\00:16:32.13 brain degenerative disease that affects one's memory, 00:16:32.16\00:16:37.44 and ability to make judgments and process information. 00:16:37.45\00:16:42.78 For many elderly in this country they would almost rather 00:16:42.79\00:16:47.41 hear the word "cancer" than Alzheimer disease. 00:16:47.44\00:16:51.24 I think for most people, that's true. 00:16:51.27\00:16:53.44 And so, a couple of things that we want to look at 00:16:53.47\00:16:56.53 that are very interesting, and in the area of 00:16:56.56\00:17:01.31 natural remedies; and in this area of 00:17:01.34\00:17:05.87 Alzheimer disease, there is mounting evidence that 00:17:05.90\00:17:09.40 what we call "free radicals" are causing some of the 00:17:09.43\00:17:13.32 damage to the brain cells leading to this disease 00:17:13.35\00:17:17.71 we call Alzheimer disease. 00:17:17.74\00:17:19.93 So, just a minute before you go... 00:17:19.96\00:17:22.76 to finish with that, when you say, "free radical" 00:17:22.79\00:17:25.52 I mean, that sounds like some weird person running around, 00:17:25.55\00:17:28.70 but what does that mean exactly, a free radical? 00:17:28.73\00:17:32.50 Well, in our body's metabolism, energy metabolism 00:17:32.55\00:17:38.48 ...sometimes oxygen is metabolized into free radicals 00:17:38.51\00:17:44.47 and our bodies generally, for the most part, 00:17:44.50\00:17:47.98 are able to correct any of the damage that occurs 00:17:48.01\00:17:51.71 from free radicals. 00:17:51.74\00:17:52.73 And a free radical, what does it do, just bounce off 00:17:52.76\00:17:54.69 everything and injure things, is that what you mean? Right 00:17:54.72\00:17:57.31 It's almost like a loose cannon firing away in our cells. 00:17:57.34\00:18:02.55 I didn't mean to get you off your point, 00:18:02.58\00:18:03.69 but what you were saying, I believe, 00:18:03.72\00:18:04.80 was Alzheimer's... they theorize that these 00:18:04.81\00:18:08.45 molecules that are banging off everything can lead to 00:18:08.48\00:18:12.66 actually Alzheimer's. 00:18:12.69\00:18:13.68 Okay, go ahead, what next... 00:18:13.71\00:18:15.90 one of the herbal preparations is ginkgo biloba. 00:18:15.93\00:18:21.63 Now this comes to us from China, the Orient Japan, 00:18:21.64\00:18:27.91 and, in fact, it's from a sacred tree in China and Japan. 00:18:27.94\00:18:32.86 It's been used medicinally there for centuries, 00:18:32.87\00:18:37.06 and the extract is actually a free radical scavenger. 00:18:37.09\00:18:41.88 Looks for the bad guys... Looks for those people 00:18:41.91\00:18:43.98 that are bouncing off the walls ... And neutralizes them. 00:18:44.01\00:18:47.13 Now there's some interesting studies that have been done 00:18:47.16\00:18:49.82 in the recent years in the "Archives of Neurology" 00:18:49.85\00:18:52.18 they reviewed all of these studies, 00:18:52.21\00:18:54.82 and they found 4 studies that met strict scientific 00:18:54.85\00:19:00.67 criteria that they could use. 00:19:00.70\00:19:03.42 And they found that using 120-240 mg a day of ginkgo 00:19:03.45\00:19:10.03 showed a very significant effect over 00:19:10.06\00:19:13.19 a 3-6 months' treatment period of actually 00:19:13.22\00:19:16.42 improving the person, or slowing 00:19:16.45\00:19:18.89 the progression of the disease. 00:19:18.92\00:19:22.44 Another research journal called, "Brain Research" 00:19:22.47\00:19:27.85 I found this very interesting... 00:19:27.88\00:19:29.27 They reported in March 1996... 00:19:29.30\00:19:32.02 These researchers were taking nerve cells and exposing them 00:19:32.05\00:19:38.97 to hydrogen peroxide which is a very 00:19:39.00\00:19:41.53 strong free radical producer that causes oxidation. 00:19:41.56\00:19:46.60 That's a good way to describe free radicals, isn't it? 00:19:46.63\00:19:48.62 If you've had hydrogen peroxide, you know what it does 00:19:48.65\00:19:51.97 ...that's a free radical! 00:19:52.00\00:19:53.65 To put and exposing normal nerve cells to that 00:19:53.68\00:19:57.30 causes a significant amount of damage. 00:19:57.33\00:20:00.68 When they pre-treat it with ginkgo, those nerve cells, 00:20:00.71\00:20:05.59 and then exposed them to the hydrogen peroxide, 00:20:05.62\00:20:08.25 found a marked decrease in the 00:20:08.26\00:20:10.81 damage that the hydrogen peroxide was causing; 00:20:10.84\00:20:13.79 another indication that the ginkgo was protecting 00:20:13.82\00:20:17.17 the nerve cells from that damage by these free radicals. 00:20:17.20\00:20:21.75 Again, probably this ginkgo, you said it in the first section 00:20:21.78\00:20:25.25 of our program today, maybe some people just joined us; 00:20:25.26\00:20:28.00 this needs to be that standardized ginkgo... 00:20:28.03\00:20:32.01 In other words, you know, the type that's really good. 00:20:32.04\00:20:34.26 Look for it to say "standardized" on there. 00:20:34.29\00:20:36.91 Right... finding the best brand out there that you can. 00:20:36.94\00:20:39.69 Another thing, I think that I don't want people to miss, 00:20:39.72\00:20:43.28 but I heard it... 00:20:43.31\00:20:44.90 You did a lot of research on this; 00:20:44.91\00:20:46.78 and you didn't just look at any study that was off the wall... 00:20:46.81\00:20:49.25 You said, "Hey, there's this group that looked at all... 00:20:50.10\00:20:52.21 and looked for those really 00:20:52.24\00:20:53.41 scientifically well-researched claims. Exactly, right. 00:20:53.42\00:20:57.93 What other good news do you 00:20:57.97\00:20:59.21 have for us concerning Alzheimer's? 00:20:59.24\00:21:01.03 Well, back to something we talked in previous programs is 00:21:01.06\00:21:06.68 vitamins... the vitamin C, and vitamin E 00:21:06.71\00:21:11.06 There are vitamins that we know have antioxidant effects 00:21:11.09\00:21:16.72 that are powerful antioxidants, 00:21:16.75\00:21:18.67 and they've looked at the Rush University in Chicago, 00:21:19.76\00:21:24.06 studied a group of patients, 633, 00:21:24.09\00:21:28.70 and they found that those that were using vitamin E supplements 00:21:28.73\00:21:33.07 and vitamin C supplements had a marked reduction 00:21:33.10\00:21:36.93 in the number of Alzheimer dementia or disease 00:21:36.94\00:21:42.28 development among those patients. 00:21:42.31\00:21:45.26 So in other words, they gave them these things, 00:21:45.27\00:21:47.55 they thought they were going to develop Alzheimer's, 00:21:47.58\00:21:49.76 and then they didn't because they got these things. 00:21:49.79\00:21:51.77 It seemed to protect these users. 00:21:51.80\00:21:55.43 When you say, "a marked," I mean what, they studied 20, 00:21:55.46\00:21:57.81 and only... What happened? 00:21:57.84\00:22:00.11 Well, in a group of 27 that were using vitamin C, 00:22:00.14\00:22:04.87 none of them developed it, as were it had been predicted 00:22:04.90\00:22:09.46 ...They use models to predict how many they would expect 00:22:09.49\00:22:13.12 to develop the disease... 00:22:13.15\00:22:14.49 They were expecting approximately 4 to develop it 00:22:14.52\00:22:17.58 out of 27, but NONE developed it during the study. 00:22:17.61\00:22:22.02 So their conclusion was that vitamin C and E 00:22:22.05\00:22:25.55 appears to be able to lower the risk of development 00:22:25.58\00:22:28.60 of Alzheimer disease... 00:22:28.63\00:22:32.87 Another researcher, called Dr. Sano, looked at vitamin E 00:22:32.91\00:22:40.63 in a study where they were looking at patients that 00:22:40.67\00:22:44.14 already had Alzheimer disease, were in the early stages, 00:22:44.17\00:22:47.89 and they were wanting to look to see if they could 00:22:47.92\00:22:49.99 slow the progression of the disease down. 00:22:50.02\00:22:54.29 And what they found it was using 400 IU a day, 00:22:54.32\00:22:59.70 of vitamin E, slowed the progress of the disease 00:22:59.73\00:23:04.33 by nearly two-thirds. Wow 00:23:04.36\00:23:07.32 Now you might say, two-thirds of a year... 00:23:07.35\00:23:10.00 But that's still probably significant. 00:23:10.03\00:23:12.05 It was a significant difference between that, and a placebo pill 00:23:12.08\00:23:17.48 Dummy pill, sugar pill or something. Right. 00:23:17.51\00:23:20.50 So in other words, what you are saying with that is... 00:23:20.53\00:23:23.42 Any time is valuable time if someone is losing 00:23:23.45\00:23:25.80 their ability to remember something. 00:23:25.84\00:23:26.87 Right, because the things they were looking at was 00:23:26.90\00:23:29.45 the progression of the disease was someone that 00:23:29.48\00:23:33.01 could do all of their activities of daily living, 00:23:33.04\00:23:36.24 now lose that ability, or have to be moved into a nursing home. 00:23:36.27\00:23:41.48 So these were looking at significant events 00:23:41.51\00:23:44.57 in the progress of the disease, 00:23:44.60\00:23:46.94 and those things were pushed off down in the road. 00:23:46.97\00:23:53.52 One question for you... 00:23:53.55\00:23:54.77 When you talk about vitamin C and vitamin E, 00:23:54.80\00:23:57.16 does this mean the actual supplements in this case... 00:23:57.17\00:24:01.14 it sounds like you're talking about taking supplements 00:24:01.17\00:24:02.86 in this case, or is it fruits again, that you're talking about 00:24:02.89\00:24:07.10 Well in this study, they studied the supplement itself, 00:24:07.13\00:24:11.30 vitamin E, 400 IU. 00:24:11.33\00:24:14.54 Well let's move on... 00:24:14.57\00:24:16.56 We have one other thing you wanted to talk to us about, 00:24:16.59\00:24:18.62 and you've dealt with several different things here, 00:24:18.65\00:24:21.94 but another big thing is brittle bones, "osteoporosis" 00:24:21.95\00:24:25.42 Osteoporosis, and we'll just focus briefly on that. 00:24:25.45\00:24:29.53 The first concept to recognize with osteoporosis, brittle bones 00:24:29.56\00:24:37.83 is that our bones are like calcium banks, 00:24:37.86\00:24:44.06 and from birth until about the age of in the 30s 00:24:44.09\00:24:49.83 we're putting calcium into our bones; 00:24:49.86\00:24:52.69 99% of the calcium in our body resides in our bones, 00:24:52.72\00:24:57.90 1% is dissolved in the bloodstream. 00:24:57.93\00:25:02.86 So they just keep packing it away until you're in your 30s. 00:25:02.89\00:25:05.15 Right. At that point, it's a process of withdrawing calcium 00:25:05.18\00:25:10.27 from those bones... 00:25:10.30\00:25:11.78 And in America, we withdraw too much, 00:25:11.81\00:25:14.87 and by the time someone is in their 50s, 60s and 70s, 00:25:14.90\00:25:18.78 the calcium has been withdrawn 00:25:18.81\00:25:20.99 from the bones too rapidly, and they're brittle. 00:25:21.02\00:25:24.12 So our goal is to slow that process of withdrawal 00:25:24.15\00:25:29.60 or stop it completely. What draws it out? 00:25:29.61\00:25:32.51 Just sitting around, could that be one thing? 00:25:33.42\00:25:36.02 Sedentary lifestyle, a good example are the astronauts; 00:25:36.05\00:25:41.66 when they're in a weightless state, 00:25:41.69\00:25:43.53 they lose calcium rapidly from their bones. 00:25:43.56\00:25:47.18 So sedentary lifestyle, not enough weightbearing 00:25:47.21\00:25:51.34 exercise is important. 00:25:51.37\00:25:53.03 Another one that is little known is the area of 00:25:53.06\00:25:57.23 protein in the diet. 00:25:57.26\00:25:59.90 If we take in more protein than our body needs, 00:25:59.93\00:26:04.68 then the body has to eliminate that protein 00:26:04.71\00:26:10.45 from the body and it eliminates it through the kidneys. 00:26:10.48\00:26:13.08 As they're eliminating it, it takes calcium with the 00:26:14.05\00:26:18.81 protein molecules with the amino acids 00:26:18.84\00:26:21.84 and it actually takes that calcium out of the bank... 00:26:21.87\00:26:25.23 draws it out of the bank from the bones. 00:26:25.26\00:26:27.98 Any other things we should avoid? 00:26:28.01\00:26:29.71 Some of the other things are phosphates. 00:26:29.74\00:26:32.21 Phosphates are found in soda drinks; 00:26:32.24\00:26:36.69 the animal products' meats are high in phosphates 00:26:36.72\00:26:39.43 and they tend to rob calcium from the bones... 00:26:39.46\00:26:43.20 As well as things like cigarette smoking. 00:26:43.23\00:26:47.38 We know that that doubles the rate of someone having 00:26:47.41\00:26:51.39 a hip fracture from osteoporosis. 00:26:51.42\00:26:55.75 Alcohol intake leads to calcium loss from the bones. 00:26:55.78\00:27:01.09 And so, in the area of getting calcium, 00:27:01.12\00:27:04.98 the goal is to get as much calcium as you can, 00:27:04.99\00:27:08.98 but without the protein. 00:27:09.01\00:27:11.80 And there are calcium-rich foods that are high in calcium; 00:27:11.83\00:27:16.64 a lot of green leafy vegetables. 00:27:16.67\00:27:19.34 Green leafy vegetables, broccoli kale, string beans, tofu... 00:27:19.37\00:27:26.57 High in calcium but low in protein. 00:27:26.58\00:27:30.01 We've been talking with Dr. Kevin Bryant, 00:27:30.04\00:27:32.68 from Wichita, Kansas 00:27:32.71\00:27:33.73 We've looked at some health concerns for older Americans. 00:27:33.74\00:27:36.79 We've looked at natural remedies for those. 00:27:36.82\00:27:40.41 We've looked at how we can avoid these things through 00:27:40.44\00:27:43.75 proper medical care... 00:27:43.78\00:27:45.06 Also through proper lifestyle choices, 00:27:45.09\00:27:47.70 but then in addition, looking at natural remedies to 00:27:47.73\00:27:51.02 stop these things from happening or reverse them. 00:27:51.05\00:27:54.28 We hope that today's program has been a blessing to you, 00:27:54.31\00:27:57.40 and that you have health that lasts for a lifetime! 00:27:57.44\00:27:59.31
