Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime" 00:00:52.61\00:00:54.89 I'm glad you've joined us, and we hope that today's program 00:00:54.92\00:00:58.85 WILL give you health that lasts for a lifetime, 00:00:58.88\00:01:00.92 And to help us with that, is Dr. Kevin Bryant 00:01:00.95\00:01:04.20 from Wichita, Kansas. 00:01:04.23\00:01:05.43 Dr. Bryant is a specialist in family practice, 00:01:05.46\00:01:09.10 and one of his real interests is heart disease. 00:01:09.13\00:01:12.35 Is that right? That's correct. 00:01:12.38\00:01:13.67 And you know, we have many traditional approaches 00:01:13.70\00:01:16.79 to dealing with heart attacks 00:01:16.80\00:01:19.35 and all of these different types of things. 00:01:19.38\00:01:21.91 There are lifestyle issues, 00:01:21.94\00:01:24.75 and there are things that we could do. 00:01:24.79\00:01:26.65 We can exercise, we can take care of our bodies, 00:01:26.69\00:01:29.44 but assuming all that has been done, 00:01:29.45\00:01:31.23 we've looked at those different things, 00:01:31.26\00:01:32.51 this is really the foundation from which we look at 00:01:32.54\00:01:36.22 something like our subject for today. Is that right? 00:01:36.25\00:01:39.99 That's correct, and it is important to remember 00:01:40.02\00:01:44.99 that the lifestyle changes are really the most important. 00:01:45.02\00:01:48.38 What we're going to cover today, while they may be helpful 00:01:48.41\00:01:52.58 ...attitude, supplements, they don't replace 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.37 the lifestyle changes that one might need to make. 00:01:55.40\00:02:00.05 So, it's also important to remember that these 00:02:00.08\00:02:04.71 herbal preparations natural remedies may, in fact, 00:02:04.74\00:02:10.24 interact with medications that someone is on, 00:02:10.27\00:02:13.98 so it may be important for them to talk with their physician, 00:02:14.01\00:02:18.50 and let them know. 00:02:18.53\00:02:21.22 We have an optimistic amount of things we're 00:02:21.25\00:02:23.36 going to look at today, and we want to give an overview of them 00:02:23.39\00:02:26.75 but maybe it would be helpful for you to work through 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.89 what we're going to talk about. 00:02:28.92\00:02:30.15 Yes, we wanted to look briefly at some of the evidence 00:02:30.16\00:02:34.74 relating to oat bran, look at vitamins, 00:02:34.77\00:02:38.56 antioxidants, folic acid, 00:02:38.59\00:02:41.54 and then 2 herbal compounds, 00:02:41.57\00:02:45.83 one called "gugulipid" 00:02:45.86\00:02:47.97 Gugulipid... I know it's one you don't hear about too often, 00:02:48.00\00:02:52.15 and certainly most Americans may not have heard of it, 00:02:52.16\00:02:54.27 but in India, it's VERY well-known. 00:02:54.30\00:02:58.16 Hawthorn berry will be the last one we'll be looking at. 00:02:58.19\00:03:01.71 Well let's jump into it! Let's start out. 00:03:01.74\00:03:03.58 I mean, some of this maybe people have heard something 00:03:03.61\00:03:05.55 about oat bran, but what can you tell us about oat bran? 00:03:05.58\00:03:08.56 Oat bran may not be big news right now; 00:03:08.59\00:03:11.86 a number of years ago, it certainly was. 00:03:11.89\00:03:15.85 And the story is told of Dr. Anderson 00:03:15.88\00:03:18.52 from the University of Kentucky, 00:03:18.55\00:03:19.87 that did the original research, that when he went to 00:03:19.90\00:03:22.60 get a supply of oat bran, 00:03:22.63\00:03:24.80 he had marked difficulty even finding it. 00:03:24.81\00:03:27.88 It had been milled out in the process of 00:03:27.91\00:03:31.11 producing oat products, 00:03:31.14\00:03:32.72 and we thought that it wasn't even a useful item. 00:03:32.75\00:03:36.27 Well his research has shown us that it can be very 00:03:36.30\00:03:39.78 helpful in lowering cholesterol. 00:03:39.81\00:03:41.87 It works by going through the intestinal tract; 00:03:41.90\00:03:46.74 it's not digested. 00:03:46.77\00:03:48.23 Bran is not a digestible food item, 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.08 so it goes right on through, 00:03:51.11\00:03:52.68 and as it goes through, it attaches to bile salts. 00:03:52.69\00:03:57.75 Bile salts are made by the liver and usually are reabsorbed 00:03:57.78\00:04:03.26 but when they become attached to bran, oat bran in particular, 00:04:03.29\00:04:07.14 it's carried on out of the system, 00:04:07.17\00:04:09.28 and thereby, takes cholesterol out of the body... 00:04:09.31\00:04:13.32 and that's how it lowers the cholesterol level. 00:04:13.35\00:04:16.52 Normally we talk about at least 2 ounces of oat bran 00:04:16.55\00:04:21.71 being mixed with food. 00:04:21.74\00:04:23.72 So you sprinkle this on your cereal, 00:04:23.75\00:04:25.06 or you do something with it, but get 2 ounces' worth 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.50 and then it does the magic of taking stuff out. 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.70 It goes on through, and does its work... 00:04:29.71\00:04:32.38 And the interesting studies have shown a 00:04:32.41\00:04:35.94 10 to 15% decrease in total cholesterol... 00:04:35.95\00:04:39.65 That's rather significant! 00:04:39.68\00:04:40.93 I mean, it seems anyway; what does that mean? 00:04:40.96\00:04:43.29 If I have my cholesterol that's cut by 10-15% 00:04:43.32\00:04:47.27 what does that mean in terms of my risk for 00:04:47.30\00:04:49.38 a heart attack or heart disease? 00:04:49.41\00:04:50.84 Well there are a number of other studies that show us that 00:04:50.87\00:04:53.48 for every percent drop in cholesterol, 00:04:53.49\00:04:56.82 a drop in heart disease risk is 2 to 3%. 00:04:56.85\00:05:02.18 So a 10-15% drop can be anywhere from 30-45%. 00:05:02.21\00:05:07.62 WOW... just by sprinkling that oat bran! 00:05:07.65\00:05:10.05 It's amazing, something as simple as that. 00:05:10.08\00:05:12.97 You told the story about, they didn't even know what it was. 00:05:13.00\00:05:15.57 Can we find it now in stores; is it readily available? 00:05:15.60\00:05:17.97 Could you go down to wherever your local supermarket 00:05:18.00\00:05:21.11 and say, "Give me oat bran, 00:05:21.14\00:05:22.54 and they know what they're talking about? 00:05:22.57\00:05:24.03 Well, that is an important point because it needs to be 00:05:24.06\00:05:27.49 the crude unprocessed oat bran, not just simply oatmeal... 00:05:27.52\00:05:34.50 It's oat bran, so that's an important distinction. 00:05:34.53\00:05:40.90 You know, that leads into the next thing we want to look at, 00:05:40.93\00:05:44.37 and that is the area of vitamins and antioxidants. 00:05:44.40\00:05:50.15 Another item in nature that is recently being found 00:05:50.18\00:05:56.92 to be very important, and particularly there are 00:05:56.95\00:06:00.54 2 vitamins that are most studied 00:06:00.57\00:06:04.33 and that's vitamin E, and vitamin C. 00:06:04.34\00:06:07.45 And they are called antioxidant vitamins. 00:06:07.48\00:06:12.35 Again, they're the vitamins that help protect our 00:06:12.38\00:06:16.10 bodies against the harmful effects of what are called 00:06:16.13\00:06:19.66 "free radicals" and these are dangerous 00:06:19.69\00:06:23.43 byproducts of our own metabolism; 00:06:23.46\00:06:27.10 sometimes we get it from the environment, 00:06:27.13\00:06:28.94 and they can damage our cells. 00:06:28.97\00:06:31.57 So they're sort of like... an antioxidant is kind of like 00:06:31.60\00:06:36.35 a molecule that's gone bizerk. 00:06:36.38\00:06:38.57 It's kind of just banging against 00:06:38.60\00:06:40.32 things and messing things up. 00:06:40.36\00:06:41.84 Right, free radicals are, and the antioxidants 00:06:41.88\00:06:45.23 scavenge those... calm those down or knock them out! 00:06:45.26\00:06:48.70 Neutralize them. 00:06:48.73\00:06:51.52 Are there free radicals that we can ingest, 00:06:51.55\00:06:53.85 or, from the outside, something we eat; 00:06:53.88\00:06:55.62 there are oxidized things we can eat, and then there are 00:06:55.65\00:06:58.40 things inside our own body, is that what you're saying? 00:06:58.43\00:07:00.56 Yeah, and one of the major source in America today, 00:07:00.59\00:07:04.47 an external consumption of free radicals is smoking. 00:07:04.50\00:07:09.54 Smoking? Right 00:07:09.57\00:07:11.42 As the cigarette burns, and people inhale that smoke, 00:07:11.45\00:07:15.82 there are an overwhelming number of free radicals in that smoke, 00:07:15.85\00:07:20.35 that then does its damage. 00:07:20.38\00:07:21.93 I don't think you're suggesting we could smoke if we take 00:07:21.96\00:07:24.20 vitamin E or vitamin C though, right? 00:07:24.23\00:07:26.24 No, they've looked at that, and found it doesn't protect enough. 00:07:26.27\00:07:31.48 Okay, so vitamin E, vitamin C, can you just get that in a 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.44 supplement form, or is it better to take it in a plant source? 00:07:34.47\00:07:38.33 There are plant sources for both of those. 00:07:38.36\00:07:40.42 Obviously, vitamin C is going to be found high in your 00:07:40.45\00:07:43.24 fruits and a lot of your vegetables. 00:07:43.27\00:07:46.19 Vitamin E is more in the grains, and some in the nuts. 00:07:46.22\00:07:52.12 But collectively, in the fruits and vegetables, 00:07:52.15\00:07:56.26 not only are your getting those antioxidant vitamin C and E, 00:07:56.29\00:08:02.31 there are hundreds and thousands of what are called... 00:08:02.34\00:08:06.34 "phytochemicals" 00:08:06.37\00:08:07.98 "Phyto" is a word that means plant; so plant chemicals 00:08:08.01\00:08:12.38 which until just in the last decade or so, 00:08:12.41\00:08:15.34 we really didn't understand what they were doing... 00:08:15.37\00:08:18.42 And now we're finding out a lot of them are antioxidants. 00:08:18.43\00:08:22.10 They're knocking out those bad guys. 00:08:22.13\00:08:23.49 So, is it better... I think what I hear you saying is... 00:08:23.52\00:08:28.43 If you had a choice between getting a plant, 00:08:28.46\00:08:31.66 or eating a banana, or eating an apple, or eating a strawberry 00:08:31.69\00:08:35.84 or eating a whatever it is, and buying a bottle of 00:08:35.87\00:08:39.83 the same thing, you're going to get more by 00:08:39.86\00:08:42.07 eating it nature's way usually, than in a bottle, 00:08:42.08\00:08:45.67 because it's just one narrow part of what's in that big 00:08:45.70\00:08:49.21 strawberry! 00:08:49.24\00:08:51.11 Right, you get a combination of them, and it's important, 00:08:51.14\00:08:55.41 WHY do we need the antioxidants? 00:08:55.44\00:08:57.71 What is it that they're doing? 00:08:57.74\00:08:59.25 And that comes back to the issue of cholesterol 00:08:59.28\00:09:03.06 and heart disease, and now we know that cholesterol 00:09:03.09\00:09:07.76 by itself, until it becomes oxidized, 00:09:07.79\00:09:11.83 or damaged by these free radicals, 00:09:11.84\00:09:14.31 is not nearly as dangerous to promoting heart disease, 00:09:14.34\00:09:18.90 so it's in an attempt to prevent cholesterol from being damaged 00:09:18.93\00:09:23.71 by these free radicals that we need the antioxidants. 00:09:23.74\00:09:27.92 So God knew what He was doing when He said eat 00:09:27.95\00:09:29.93 plants, fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables. 00:09:29.96\00:09:32.02 Yeah, He knew there was a tremendous plentiful supply 00:09:32.05\00:09:36.11 of antioxidants to help prevent that. 00:09:36.14\00:09:39.16 What else do you have for us in your pharmacopeia of 00:09:39.19\00:09:41.54 natural remedies? 00:09:41.55\00:09:43.15 Well, another vitamin that has been highlighted now 00:09:43.16\00:09:46.76 just in the last few years, is vitamin B, 00:09:46.79\00:09:49.90 one of the B-complex vitamins, folic acid, 00:09:49.93\00:09:52.68 and where it comes to play is in a new risk factor that 00:09:52.71\00:09:57.49 has been discovered in the last few years for heart disease, 00:09:57.52\00:10:00.96 and that's an amino acid called "homocysteine" 00:10:00.99\00:10:06.01 ...That when that amino acid is at too high a level 00:10:06.04\00:10:11.44 in our bloodstream, it's been associated with promoting 00:10:11.47\00:10:15.27 and causing atherosclerosis... hardening of the arteries, 00:10:15.30\00:10:20.42 which leads to heart disease and other strokes 00:10:20.43\00:10:23.57 and vascular disease. 00:10:23.60\00:10:25.32 Okay, so they can do a lab test and find out whether 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.61 your homocysteine level is up, if you want them to now. 00:10:27.64\00:10:29.86 That's true. 00:10:29.89\00:10:31.14 Folic acid acts on that. Right 00:10:31.17\00:10:34.79 Folic acid is an important vitamin needed for our body 00:10:34.82\00:10:40.16 to take the homocysteine, 00:10:40.19\00:10:42.68 convert it into another amino acid, 00:10:42.71\00:10:45.56 which is not dangerous... 00:10:45.59\00:10:47.28 does not cause the disease process to occur. 00:10:47.31\00:10:53.11 Are there plant sources, or what should we eat for that? 00:10:53.14\00:10:58.09 Again, we come back to the fruits and vegetables that are 00:10:58.12\00:11:01.14 high sources for the vitamin B6... 00:11:01.17\00:11:04.90 And particularly the legumes, the lentils and the beans 00:11:04.91\00:11:09.11 are a good source. 00:11:09.14\00:11:10.85 So a legume would be what? What's a legume? 00:11:10.88\00:11:12.86 Legume is beans and lentils. 00:11:12.89\00:11:16.26 It's also in a lot of the green leafy vegetables are good 00:11:16.29\00:11:21.53 sources for it. GREAT! 00:11:21.56\00:11:23.97 So, anything else about folic acid you want to share with us? 00:11:24.00\00:11:28.06 ...And we were talking about how for every percentage drop 00:11:28.09\00:11:33.45 of cholesterol, the heart disease risk drops by 2-3% 00:11:33.46\00:11:39.11 With homocysteine, it turns out that for every 1% 00:11:39.12\00:11:43.42 drop in your homocysteine level, that translates to 00:11:43.45\00:11:47.40 1% decrease in heart disease. Wow! 00:11:47.43\00:11:50.55 And so increasing the folic acid intake by 400 mcg/day 00:11:50.58\00:11:58.79 which, if someone is getting the 5-9 servings of 00:11:58.82\00:12:06.09 fruits and vegetables a day, 00:12:06.12\00:12:08.23 they will DEFINITELY increase the folic acid level, 00:12:08.26\00:12:12.26 and that can drop that homocysteine level 00:12:12.29\00:12:15.01 sometimes 20, 30, to 40%; 00:12:15.04\00:12:18.79 translating to 20-40% drop in that person's heart disease risk 00:12:18.80\00:12:24.67 So, eating, what did you say... 6-9 servings of 00:12:24.70\00:12:28.39 fruits and vegetables a day, you wouldn't have to worry about it. 00:12:28.42\00:12:31.91 It's not like you have to say, "Okay, what's my level now?" 00:12:31.94\00:12:34.36 But, should they take a supplement to be sure, 00:12:34.39\00:12:38.05 or, what do you think? 00:12:38.06\00:12:40.69 Taking a supplement would be fine. 00:12:40.72\00:12:43.58 I think you're missing out again on ALL the other 00:12:43.61\00:12:46.74 good things in those fruits and vegetables. 00:12:46.75\00:12:49.49 So, in other words, if you eat the fruits, you get all those 00:12:49.52\00:12:52.09 thousands of other phyto plant chemicals that help you. Right 00:12:52.12\00:12:56.81 Well, why don't we talk a little bit... 00:12:56.84\00:12:58.94 I think there's another one we want to get to before 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.61 the break and just introduce it. 00:13:00.65\00:13:01.93 L- arginine... what's that all about? 00:13:01.97\00:13:04.51 L- arginine is another amino acid, 00:13:04.54\00:13:07.61 interestingly enough, that is important. 00:13:07.64\00:13:11.76 We've just been finding this out in the last few years 00:13:11.79\00:13:15.08 that is converted in the body in the cells that line the 00:13:15.11\00:13:21.07 inside of the artery. 00:13:21.10\00:13:22.59 It's converted into a substance called "nitric oxide" 00:13:22.62\00:13:26.12 So that's like that nitroglycerin people 00:13:26.15\00:13:28.68 take a little pill or a little squirt.. same thing. 00:13:28.71\00:13:31.20 That causes those coronary arteries to dilate to open up. 00:13:31.23\00:13:35.17 Blood gets through them better... 00:13:35.20\00:13:36.40 And wet can get this from a plant source? 00:13:36.43\00:13:38.15 Right... we can get it from a plant source. 00:13:38.18\00:13:41.64 We've been talking with Dr. Kevin Bryant. 00:13:41.67\00:13:44.49 When we come back, we're going to talk a little bit more 00:13:44.52\00:13:46.86 about L-arginine and some more natural remedies for your heart. 00:13:46.89\00:13:51.63 We hope that you join us. 00:13:51.66\00:13:54.85 Have you found yourself wishing that you could shed a few pounds 00:14:06.50\00:14:09.35 Have you been on a diet for most of your life, 00:14:09.38\00:14:12.14 but not found anything that will really keep the weight off? 00:15:54.46\00:15:56.88 We've said that it vasodilates; 00:15:56.91\00:15:59.28 it opens up the blood vessels, 00:15:59.31\00:16:00.57 and that's what you've shared with us from a natural source, 00:16:00.60\00:16:02.97 but anything else? 00:16:02.98\00:16:04.10 Yeah, Dr. Lerman reported in the Journal "Circulation" in 1998, 00:16:04.13\00:16:11.04 that he studied 26 patients who were having chest pain, 00:16:11.07\00:16:15.75 heart pain, angina pain, but who didn't have 00:16:15.78\00:16:20.38 blockages that they thought were causing these heart pains, 00:16:20.41\00:16:25.01 so they determined that these patients' coronary arteries, 00:16:25.04\00:16:29.48 the arteries supplying blood to the heart, were actually 00:16:29.49\00:16:32.64 going into a spasm and cutting 00:16:32.67\00:16:35.80 the circulation off to their heart. 00:16:35.83\00:16:37.81 He gave these patients L- arginine 3 grams, 3 X per day 00:16:37.84\00:16:44.89 and was able to show that as this was converted 00:16:44.92\00:16:48.46 into this nitric oxide, it opened their 00:16:48.49\00:16:51.82 coronary arteries up and INCREASED the circulation 00:16:51.85\00:16:55.50 150% in those coronary arteries... Wow 00:16:55.53\00:16:59.00 And their chest pains went away. 00:16:59.03\00:17:01.34 So double the amount of flow, just opened it up! Right 00:17:01.37\00:17:06.87 Just from a natural source! 00:17:06.90\00:17:08.53 So this is really something we should think about 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.13 especially if we have heart disease. 00:17:10.16\00:17:12.27 Right, I think it's a natural thing that anyone can do, 00:17:12.30\00:17:16.04 and there are sources in the plant kingdom for this 00:17:16.07\00:17:21.38 L- arginine... this amino acid can be found in the beans; 00:17:21.41\00:17:26.74 interestingly enough in almonds and black walnuts, 00:17:26.77\00:17:31.16 and in lentils, soybeans and 00:17:31.19\00:17:34.00 in pumpkin kernels are the highest sources. 00:17:34.04\00:17:37.75 Pumpkin pie okay? I think it has to be the kernel. 00:17:37.78\00:17:42.46 And so they are a good source. 00:17:42.49\00:17:44.59 Now, commercially, they do make 00:17:44.63\00:17:46.70 capsules that have 500 mg of it in there. 00:17:46.73\00:17:51.62 So L-arginine is a whole new area of research that we're 00:17:51.65\00:17:56.77 finding can improve coronary blood flow and circulation. 00:17:56.80\00:18:02.96 We've got quite a few things in 00:18:02.99\00:18:03.96 our shopping cart today, natural remedies. 00:18:03.99\00:18:05.87 But, the next one fascinates me, the name is "gugulipid" 00:18:05.90\00:18:11.22 Gugulipid, yes. This is a whole new area, 00:18:11.25\00:18:14.39 I've never heard of gugulipid before. 00:18:14.42\00:18:16.43 If you lived in India, this name would not be so unfamiliar. 00:18:16.46\00:18:22.54 In India this medication is used frequently. 00:18:22.57\00:18:27.05 It's an herbal medication, but it's prescribed 00:18:27.08\00:18:30.45 by physicians over in India for the treatment of 00:18:30.48\00:18:34.57 high cholesterol levels. 00:18:34.60\00:18:36.68 It's taken from the Mukul Myrrh tree; 00:18:36.71\00:18:41.91 it's the resin of that tree that they extract, 00:18:41.94\00:18:45.42 they compound gugulipid from. 00:18:45.45\00:18:48.47 Now, it does a number of things. 00:18:48.50\00:18:50.84 Some pretty big words here, 00:18:50.87\00:18:53.28 you're going to have to help us with this. 00:18:53.31\00:18:54.63 Right, it slows down the process of putting fat in fat cells. 00:18:54.66\00:19:02.16 It helps to stop or slow down the liver's production of 00:19:02.19\00:19:08.08 cholesterol and this is similar to some of the 00:19:08.11\00:19:10.70 prescription drugs that are prescribed in America. 00:19:10.73\00:19:14.49 This is what they do, cholesterol-lowering drugs 00:19:14.50\00:19:17.14 do this thing; they suppress the 00:19:17.17\00:19:20.07 liver's production of cholesterol. 00:19:20.08\00:19:22.05 It helps to stimulate fat coming out of the fat stores. 00:19:22.06\00:19:27.42 It also acts kind of like oat bran in binding 00:19:27.45\00:19:32.59 to bile acids and taking bile acids out of the body; 00:19:32.62\00:19:36.95 taking cholesterol out of the body. 00:19:36.98\00:19:38.95 So, a number of different ways in which this gugulipid works; 00:19:38.98\00:19:44.90 fascinating how it works. 00:19:44.93\00:19:47.82 Most of the studies have been done in India. 00:19:47.85\00:19:51.00 There are some that have been done in America, 00:19:51.03\00:19:53.26 and the well-controlled studies show us that it does 00:19:53.29\00:19:58.18 ALL the right things. 00:19:58.21\00:19:59.69 It lowers the bad cholesterol, LDL, by as much as 17%. 00:19:59.72\00:20:07.13 It increases the good cholesterol by 14%, 00:20:07.16\00:20:11.97 and lowers triglyceride levels 24%. 00:20:12.00\00:20:15.73 Wow, these are significant things. 00:20:15.76\00:20:17.76 So, I think before we were talking that, 00:20:17.79\00:20:20.18 you know, LDL is the "lousy" type; 00:20:20.21\00:20:23.80 and you want that to go down because it's not good for you. 00:20:23.83\00:20:26.48 That's the type, you correct me if I'm wrong, that goes right 00:20:26.51\00:20:29.88 into your artery walls and makes them thicken, 00:20:29.89\00:20:32.72 and you don't want that. 00:20:32.75\00:20:34.18 Right, so lowering that is good. 00:20:34.21\00:20:36.90 And then the HDL, the "happy" 00:20:36.91\00:20:39.28 or the "healthy" density lipoprotein. 00:20:39.31\00:20:43.39 Those are the ones that take away the bad or whatever. 00:20:43.42\00:20:46.39 Take the cholesterol out of the plaques, 00:20:46.42\00:20:50.71 and so you want that to go up. 00:20:50.74\00:20:53.26 This is helping elevate that. 00:20:53.29\00:20:55.04 And then the triglycerides... 00:20:55.07\00:20:57.18 does something good with those too. 00:20:57.22\00:20:58.57 That's the fat in the blood that's actually circulating. 00:20:58.61\00:21:01.66 That's different than cholesterol. 00:21:01.69\00:21:03.71 It's lowering that... Okay, it's lowering that. 00:21:03.72\00:21:06.53 Now, there's one problem with this, I mean, look at this name 00:21:06.56\00:21:10.11 "gugulipid"... I might feel embarrassed telling someone 00:21:10.14\00:21:13.60 I'm on gugulipid... how do I get over that? 00:21:13.63\00:21:15.99 Maybe there's no way! 00:21:16.02\00:21:18.56 Well, just remember the last part of the name "lipid" 00:21:18.59\00:21:21.40 That's what it's for, to lower the lipids, the fat, 00:21:21.43\00:21:24.90 and the cholesterol in your blood stream. 00:21:24.93\00:21:26.87 And, an important thing to bring out at this point is 00:21:26.90\00:21:31.97 the importance of what are called standardized doses. 00:21:32.00\00:21:36.29 In Europe and most of the rest of the world, 00:21:36.32\00:21:41.03 where herbal medications are used considerably more 00:21:41.06\00:21:44.85 than they are here, prescribed, in fact, in Europe 00:21:44.88\00:21:48.08 90% of the time physicians prescribe herbal preparations. 00:21:48.11\00:21:53.38 They do a very good job of making sure that the 00:21:53.41\00:21:58.58 quality control is there, so that when you read 00:21:58.61\00:22:02.73 the amount that's on the bottle, 00:22:02.76\00:22:06.03 that you can be sure it's that amount. 00:22:06.06\00:22:09.40 America, to this point in time, has not got 00:22:09.43\00:22:13.45 quite the same process of being sure 00:22:13.48\00:22:16.08 that everything is standardized. 00:22:16.11\00:22:17.67 One thing that is helpful when you're looking at 00:22:17.71\00:22:20.29 an herbal preparation, and looking at the ingredients in it 00:22:20.32\00:22:23.64 if they say "standardized," you can feel better 00:22:23.65\00:22:28.65 that they have the quality control to keep that in there. 00:22:28.68\00:22:32.26 I mean, you seem to know a lot about these things... 00:22:32.29\00:22:34.67 I know that you run a lipid clinic. 00:22:34.70\00:22:36.17 I know that you follow up these people that go through 00:22:36.20\00:22:38.73 the health program that you run several times a year, 00:22:38.76\00:22:41.34 and you look at them on a monthly basis. 00:22:41.37\00:22:43.40 But how do we find people like you? 00:22:43.43\00:22:45.25 Let's say that I don't live in Wichita, Kansas, 00:22:45.28\00:22:48.20 or I'm not near someone like that, 00:22:48.23\00:22:50.22 how would you go about finding out who it is? 00:22:50.25\00:22:53.17 Just ask around and see who has an interest? 00:22:53.20\00:22:55.59 Talk to your physician, see who they know, 00:22:55.62\00:22:57.73 and try and find someone? 00:22:57.76\00:22:59.47 Actually in the last few years, the area of what's called... 00:22:59.50\00:23:04.24 "alternative medicine," herbal medications has become 00:23:04.27\00:23:07.53 more and more highlighted in traditional medicine. 00:23:07.56\00:23:11.53 So, our American physician is becoming more aware, 00:23:11.56\00:23:18.24 and depending on that physician he may have read more. 00:23:18.27\00:23:21.53 So talking to your physician, you may find that he has 00:23:21.56\00:23:24.01 an interest in this area, or is willing to at least look into it 00:23:24.04\00:23:28.04 Are there any side effects for gugulipid? 00:23:28.05\00:23:30.49 That's one of the nice things about it, it's very low in 00:23:30.52\00:23:34.10 side effect, and by and large, most of the herbal preparations 00:23:34.13\00:23:40.02 are low in side effect... not all of them. 00:23:40.05\00:23:42.33 And that's why it's helpful to 00:23:42.36\00:23:43.70 talk that over with your physician. 00:23:43.73\00:23:46.13 He can find out some unbiased information about them, 00:23:46.17\00:23:50.14 and find out, "do they have possible side effects," 00:23:50.15\00:23:53.83 might they interact with some medication you're already on. " 00:23:53.86\00:23:58.94 So, how often should I take it? 00:23:58.97\00:24:01.87 Let's say I find the standardized type, 00:24:01.90\00:24:03.66 I know it's good; how often do they usually take it? 00:24:03.69\00:24:06.39 The dosage is considered about 500 mg 3 X per day. 00:24:06.42\00:24:12.12 Let's go on to our next one. 00:24:12.13\00:24:14.62 Hawthorn extract. 00:24:14.65\00:24:17.05 We've saved a few minutes here, tell us about this. 00:24:17.08\00:24:19.68 Hawthorn berry... well, this is moving into a 00:24:19.69\00:24:23.78 different area of heart disease. 00:24:23.81\00:24:25.53 Today there are over 4.7 million Americans that have 00:24:25.57\00:24:31.69 congestive heart failure. 00:24:31.72\00:24:33.63 That's where the heart gets big, it's not pumping well. 00:24:33.66\00:24:36.01 It's kind of falling apart. 00:24:36.04\00:24:37.71 It's failing as a pump, fluid congests in the lungs. 00:24:37.74\00:24:42.30 The person becomes weak, fatigued, 00:24:42.33\00:24:44.47 short of breath when they're walking... 00:24:44.51\00:24:46.33 And in Europe, one of the primary medications 00:24:46.37\00:24:52.62 used for this is hawthorn berry. 00:24:52.65\00:24:54.99 We've know for 200 years that digitalis is helpful 00:24:55.02\00:24:59.66 for congestive heart failure. 00:24:59.69\00:25:01.84 It used to be called "dropsy. " 00:25:01.87\00:25:03.32 So digitalis is actually taken from the flower of the 00:25:03.33\00:25:08.41 foxglove plant, and it's an herbal preparation. 00:25:08.44\00:25:12.41 The problem with digitalis is that it can be toxic 00:25:12.44\00:25:16.46 if you get too much of it and it doesn't take too much. 00:25:16.49\00:25:19.35 Hawthorn berry on the other hand is NOT as toxic, 00:25:19.38\00:25:23.37 and can be tolerated much better. 00:25:23.40\00:25:26.76 So it can do everything that digitalis does well... better! 00:25:26.79\00:25:30.62 It can do probably close to its effective as digitalis, 00:25:30.65\00:25:35.96 but much less toxic, and in Europe they use 00:25:35.99\00:25:40.19 it for what's called stage II heart failure. 00:25:40.22\00:25:44.03 There are 4 stages to heart failure, 00:25:44.06\00:25:47.44 and stage II would be a milder form of heart failure. 00:25:47.47\00:25:52.36 So severe heart failure, they don't use it for that, 00:25:52.39\00:25:56.32 but they have shown that it can increase the heart's 00:25:56.35\00:25:59.49 ability to contract and pump the blood. 00:25:59.52\00:26:03.52 And so, they use it in Europe frequently either 00:26:03.55\00:26:09.15 as a first line, or sometimes adding it to digitalis. 00:26:09.18\00:26:15.81 Now for anyone listening today that is on digitalis, 00:26:15.84\00:26:20.53 digoxin, or lanoxin, you want to be careful about 00:26:20.56\00:26:24.22 just going out and getting some of this and adding to it 00:26:24.25\00:26:26.48 without talking to your physician because 00:26:26.51\00:26:28.60 it CAN interact with digitalis sometimes 00:26:28.63\00:26:31.66 and RAISE that level... 00:26:31.69\00:26:33.04 So you need to be working with your physician on this. 00:26:33.07\00:26:36.56 So dosage then? 00:26:36.59\00:26:37.89 Dosage starts at around 100 and can go up as high 00:26:37.92\00:26:42.82 as 900 mg per day... 00:26:42.83\00:26:46.84 usually divided throughout the day 2 or 3 different doses. 00:26:46.87\00:26:50.49 Is this really something someone that is not a 00:26:50.52\00:26:52.89 medical doctor should be doing? 00:26:52.92\00:26:54.17 I mean thinking through how much they're taking? 00:26:54.20\00:26:56.89 I mean, I would feel kind of nervous about that. 00:26:56.92\00:26:59.55 In Europe, it's prescribed by the physician, 00:26:59.58\00:27:04.61 controlled by the physician... And we're going to get there 00:27:04.64\00:27:07.57 in America, you think; we're moving that way. 00:27:07.59\00:27:10.39 I think that we're moving in that direction. 00:27:10.43\00:27:13.20 This hawthorn berry was just highlighted in one of the 00:27:13.83\00:27:16.36 journals that looks at alternative medications, 00:27:16.39\00:27:19.49 so I think more and more physicians may be 00:27:19.52\00:27:21.69 becoming aware of its use. 00:27:21.72\00:27:25.10 We've been talking with Dr. Kevin Bryant 00:27:25.13\00:27:27.71 He's a specialist in family practice. 00:27:27.72\00:27:30.38 We've been talking about natural remedies for the heart. 00:27:30.41\00:27:34.32 This is assuming, doctor, that the people that have 00:27:34.35\00:27:38.05 been with us had been doing all the right things 00:27:38.08\00:27:40.28 in terms of lifestyle; they've 00:27:40.31\00:27:42.05 been following through with their physicians. 00:27:42.09\00:27:43.64 You've given us some really tangible things to think about; 00:27:43.68\00:27:47.82 some alternatives to try; 00:27:47.85\00:27:50.46 things that don't have side effects that have been 00:27:50.49\00:27:52.48 produced as God would have them. 00:27:52.51\00:27:54.58 We hope that this has been helpful to you, 00:27:54.61\00:27:56.80 and that as a result, you'll have health that lasts 00:27:56.83\00:27:59.62 for a lifetime! 00:27:59.63\00:28:00.63
