Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime! 00:00:49.28\00:00:52.62 I'm your host Don Macintosh, 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.44 and today we're happy to have, joining with us, Rob McClintock 00:00:54.47\00:00:59.19 Rob McClintock is a Christian herbologist, 00:00:59.22\00:01:02.13 and has written a book called, "God's Healing Leaves" 00:01:02.16\00:01:05.49 What is a Christian herbologist? 00:01:05.52\00:01:07.07 What does that mean? 00:01:07.10\00:01:08.47 Well, I chose that distinction, Don, to let people know that 00:01:08.50\00:01:12.21 I was coming at it from a very specific 00:01:12.24\00:01:15.02 orientation or perspective. 00:01:15.05\00:01:17.06 A lot of the people who are involved in plant medicine today 00:01:17.09\00:01:21.14 do so from the standpoint of universal cosmic powers 00:01:21.17\00:01:26.20 that are supposedly projected down and into these plants, 00:01:26.23\00:01:30.14 and these plants contain special intelligent energies... 00:01:30.17\00:01:34.33 And a lot of people take their 00:01:34.36\00:01:36.97 medicinal plants from that perspective. 00:01:37.00\00:01:41.00 I wanted to distinguish myself from that field of persuasion 00:01:41.03\00:01:46.89 to let people recognize that there is a God; 00:01:46.92\00:01:50.02 there's a God who created all of these plants for our benefit, 00:01:50.05\00:01:53.45 and that He is the God of science, 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.74 who created specific things like the fields of chemistry, 00:01:55.77\00:02:00.82 physics and the laws of gravity and thermodynamics, 00:02:00.85\00:02:05.34 and all of these particular laws were created by God 00:02:05.37\00:02:09.13 who created our universe. 00:02:09.16\00:02:10.59 And I wanted the people that I came in contact with 00:02:10.62\00:02:13.77 to recognize that I fit in to that persuasion, 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.99 rather than the other one. 00:02:17.02\00:02:18.40 So I imagine that it's been a rather recent phenomena 00:02:18.43\00:02:22.94 to be able to go to a store and say... 00:02:22.97\00:02:24.48 "Hey, I feel this way... and here's a bottle of pills 00:02:24.51\00:02:28.59 that I can take to help me with that. " 00:02:28.62\00:02:32.08 Originally, probably these medications that we take 00:02:32.11\00:02:35.82 over-the-counter now, used to be plants... 00:02:35.85\00:02:37.97 Would that be right or wrong? 00:02:38.00\00:02:39.44 That's correct... we're still talking, a lot of times, 00:02:39.47\00:02:42.70 about some of our clinical medicines are actually 00:02:42.73\00:02:46.10 derived from plant sources. 00:02:46.13\00:02:48.50 There are many botanists and medical research teams 00:02:48.53\00:02:51.87 who actually tramp through the rainforest looking for 00:02:51.90\00:02:55.52 an unidentified species that may have some sort of a 00:02:55.55\00:02:58.47 medicinal benefit. 00:02:58.50\00:03:00.06 And I remember as a child, and that's not been that 00:03:00.09\00:03:02.25 many decades ago thankfully, 00:03:02.28\00:03:04.56 you could go to a pharmacist and he would have some 00:03:04.59\00:03:07.33 medicinal herbs already ground up in canisters on the shelf. 00:03:07.36\00:03:12.89 I remember buying goldenseal from the pharmacy as a child. 00:03:12.92\00:03:16.67 You know, you don't do that even as long as 5 years ago. 00:03:16.70\00:03:21.48 But today, you go to any sort of a big chain department store 00:03:21.51\00:03:25.05 or one of these big stores; 00:03:25.08\00:03:27.55 they've got a health food section right next to the 00:03:27.58\00:03:31.20 pharmacy and you're going to find a lot of these 00:03:31.23\00:03:33.44 medicinal herbs being sold there again. 00:03:33.47\00:03:36.05 So we're seeing people become more interested again in herbs. 00:03:36.08\00:03:40.51 What you're suggesting then is that there is a need to 00:03:40.54\00:03:45.48 get back into that and to understand the plants 00:03:45.51\00:03:48.56 that God has given us, and how they can help us 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.62 with particular situations and conditions we get into. 00:03:51.65\00:03:55.00 Now I understand that when someone becomes sick, 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.40 and they have a fever or something else, or whatever, 00:03:57.43\00:04:01.28 there are some basic things that they need to do... 00:04:01.31\00:04:06.56 I think you mentioned, before the set, 00:04:06.59\00:04:09.80 Mention some of those basic things that people need to do 00:04:09.83\00:04:12.05 for when they're feeling ill, and then maybe open our minds. 00:04:12.08\00:04:15.39 What kind of things can plants help us with? 00:04:15.42\00:04:17.96 Okay, I've had a number of people call me or come to me, 00:04:17.99\00:04:21.87 and say, "Can you give me a plant or a combination of herbs 00:04:21.90\00:04:25.76 that I can take to deal with these symptoms?" 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.57 Well, it was obvious from the symptoms that they describe 00:04:29.60\00:04:32.29 that these were symptoms that 00:04:32.32\00:04:33.69 were caused by abusing their bodies, 00:04:33.72\00:04:36.25 and I couldn't in good conscience 00:04:36.28\00:04:39.93 cover up their symptoms... 00:04:39.96\00:04:41.33 And so I always try and back people up and say... 00:04:41.36\00:04:43.57 "Wait a minute, let's look at your lifestyle" 00:04:43.60\00:04:45.88 Are you drinking? Are you smoking? 00:04:45.91\00:04:48.63 Do we have nicotine? Do we have caffeine? 00:04:48.66\00:04:51.28 Do we have alcohol? What about the fats? 00:04:51.31\00:04:54.31 What about the sugars? What about the salts? 00:04:54.34\00:04:56.23 Do you get any exercise? 00:04:56.26\00:04:57.63 Do you get any sunshine? 00:04:57.66\00:04:59.03 Do you breathe any fresh air? 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.43 Don't you go to bed at night? 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.09 You know, we cover all these basics first because 00:05:02.12\00:05:05.44 ...again, the plants are medicine but they're not 00:05:05.47\00:05:08.07 a panacea; they're not a magical 00:05:08.10\00:05:10.43 thing that you can take when you're sick. 00:05:10.46\00:05:12.57 You've got to take care of all of the bases first. 00:05:12.60\00:05:15.32 I notice in your book you mention that there are 00:05:15.35\00:05:18.58 certain things that, once you've covered those bases, 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.77 that we could really help people with... headaches, 00:05:21.80\00:05:23.81 bleeding, impacted sinuses, common cold, PMS, arthritis, 00:05:23.84\00:05:29.33 and quite a list here that you have mentioned... 00:05:29.36\00:05:32.53 infections, cancer. 00:05:32.56\00:05:34.46 Care to comment on any of those specifically. 00:05:34.49\00:05:37.78 What about headaches? 00:05:37.81\00:05:39.61 Okay... You know, you as a regular medical worker, 00:05:39.64\00:05:45.15 understand that headaches have a lot of different sources... 00:05:45.18\00:05:49.20 And for some people, perhaps what they really need is 00:05:49.23\00:05:52.66 a day off from watching television, 00:05:52.69\00:05:54.22 or a day off from work. 00:05:54.25\00:05:55.62 They need some exercise; 00:05:55.65\00:05:57.65 a lot of people need to drink some water. 00:05:57.68\00:05:59.56 They're dehydrated and headache is a sign of dehydration. 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.58 There are so many different types... 00:06:02.61\00:06:05.91 Maybe they need a good massage. 00:06:05.94\00:06:07.31 Maybe they're just all stressed out. 00:06:07.34\00:06:08.71 But for those headaches that seem to defy all of those things 00:06:08.74\00:06:14.36 we have a number of anti-inflammatory 00:06:14.39\00:06:16.63 analgesic-type plants. 00:06:16.66\00:06:18.15 We have the white willow plant which actually has some 00:06:18.18\00:06:22.16 compounds called salicylates where we originally, years ago, 00:06:22.19\00:06:25.56 we began to derive aspirin from. 00:06:25.59\00:06:27.55 It's in a little bit more system-friendly format, 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.96 in the white willow powder is a bark that people take, 00:06:30.99\00:06:33.99 a lot of people have that in their cupboard 00:06:34.02\00:06:36.88 that they can take a couple of capsules of the 00:06:36.91\00:06:38.57 white willow bark if they have a headache. 00:06:38.60\00:06:40.28 Again, I don't like to see people cover up symptoms. 00:06:40.31\00:06:42.20 I want to make sure they really, look for the foundation. 00:06:42.23\00:06:45.31 We have a lot of people with migraine headaches. 00:06:45.34\00:06:48.32 We're finding that people who take feverfew 00:06:48.35\00:06:50.98 on a fairly regular basis, can block or at least 00:06:51.01\00:06:54.93 reduce the frequency and the 00:06:54.96\00:06:56.33 severity of their migraine headaches. 00:06:56.36\00:06:57.84 But again, most people with migraine headaches have a 00:06:57.87\00:06:59.91 food allergy or they have a chemical sensitivity, 00:06:59.94\00:07:03.14 or they have a hormone imbalance, 00:07:03.17\00:07:04.95 or, the majority of the time, they don't drink enough water, 00:07:04.98\00:07:08.74 and they eat too much junk food. 00:07:08.77\00:07:10.31 There are a lot of different ways that we can deal with that. 00:07:10.34\00:07:14.28 One reason for headaches, a lot of times, 00:07:14.31\00:07:16.05 is because people have sinus headaches. 00:07:16.08\00:07:18.20 That's one of the times that we actually take some 00:07:18.23\00:07:21.80 fairly direct interventions because 00:07:21.83\00:07:24.39 you know, we have a physical thing to work on. 00:07:24.42\00:07:26.70 I've had a number of opportunities with people 00:07:26.73\00:07:29.33 who had impacted sinuses where their head was pounding, 00:07:29.36\00:07:32.39 and you could actually see like on their cheeks 00:07:32.42\00:07:35.17 where the sinus cavities are, there's actually a reddening 00:07:35.20\00:07:38.11 on the surface of the skin, and maybe a little bit of 00:07:38.14\00:07:40.25 swelling and protrusion. 00:07:40.28\00:07:41.65 Those types of things sometimes are caused from a cold or a flu, 00:07:41.68\00:07:48.31 or they can actually be from a sinus infection. 00:07:48.34\00:07:51.03 We have a number of plants... 00:07:51.06\00:07:53.39 Probably the one that's the 00:07:53.42\00:07:54.79 most easily used is the plantain plant. 00:07:54.82\00:07:57.38 I'm not talking about the banana cousin. 00:07:57.41\00:07:59.25 I'm talking about "Plantago Psyllium" 00:07:59.28\00:08:01.82 from the Latin description, 00:08:01.85\00:08:03.22 which is something that grows in almost 00:08:03.25\00:08:04.96 everybody's yard all over the U.S. 00:08:04.99\00:08:06.81 I haven't seen it in the desert, but almost anywhere 00:08:06.84\00:08:09.11 where green things grow. 00:08:09.14\00:08:10.59 I have had a number of people just take about 3 leaves 00:08:10.62\00:08:15.65 from the plant and run it through a juicer with a 00:08:15.68\00:08:19.33 raw potato; it's a pretty interesting combination. 00:08:19.36\00:08:23.37 It's not really recreational in it's flavor, 00:08:23.40\00:08:25.96 but it does help to go in and fairly quickly 00:08:25.99\00:08:30.68 defeat the infectious process, 00:08:30.71\00:08:32.42 and also works as a tremendous decongestant. 00:08:32.45\00:08:35.94 I've had people tell me that they've had congestions 00:08:35.97\00:08:39.53 to the point that they were actually causing them 00:08:39.56\00:08:41.89 apparent dental problems for years, 00:08:41.92\00:08:46.88 and using this for a few days cleared up, 00:08:46.91\00:08:49.83 and took out the pressure and the pains... 00:08:49.86\00:08:52.17 It's really a pretty easy thing to do. 00:08:52.20\00:08:54.69 So, there are ways to treat these common things. 00:08:54.72\00:08:57.33 Now I assume there probably are books or different things 00:08:57.36\00:08:59.69 available where you can actually identify the plants... 00:08:59.72\00:09:02.95 And I know either you have that kind of information, 00:09:02.98\00:09:06.88 or others in the field... because, you know, 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.73 for me, I'd go out and it just looks like weeds in my backyard. 00:09:09.76\00:09:14.02 But I'm sure there's a way to identify that. 00:09:14.05\00:09:17.06 Once we've identified that, then there are people that 00:09:17.09\00:09:21.30 can help us know what to do next if we're going down this road. 00:09:21.33\00:09:25.08 I mean, this is a fairly big decision, I think, for LOTS of 00:09:25.11\00:09:31.05 people to make this decision to say... 00:09:31.08\00:09:32.51 "Hey, I'm going to go away from traditional medicine, 00:09:32.54\00:09:34.98 and I'm going to get into these plants and try this. " 00:09:35.01\00:09:38.97 It's a fairly big step for people, wouldn't you say? 00:09:39.00\00:09:42.97 You really should take baby steps rather than a quantum leap 00:09:43.00\00:09:45.82 because I see people trying... or making the attempt 00:09:45.85\00:09:48.51 to make the quantum leap without any education, 00:09:48.54\00:09:50.80 without any experience, without any background, 00:09:50.83\00:09:52.87 and you can hurt yourself. 00:09:52.90\00:09:55.20 There are 2 ways to hurt yourself... 00:09:55.23\00:09:56.62 One is by depriving yourself of 00:09:56.65\00:09:58.33 the kind of care that is necessary. 00:09:58.37\00:09:59.81 Let's say that you've got a dreadful staph infection 00:09:59.85\00:10:03.89 in your foot or something, and you say... 00:10:03.92\00:10:05.84 "Well, I'm just going to take garlic for my 00:10:05.87\00:10:07.88 staph infection in my foot. " 00:10:07.91\00:10:09.28 I'm sorry, it's not going to do the job. 00:10:09.31\00:10:10.68 That's one way to hurt yourself by NOT taking care of yourself 00:10:10.71\00:10:14.17 in a respectable way. 00:10:14.20\00:10:15.87 There ARE ways that you can deal with those, 00:10:15.90\00:10:18.00 but most people are unaware of them, 00:10:18.03\00:10:19.52 so that's where you need to take the baby steps 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.47 and try not to replace the necessary care 00:10:21.50\00:10:26.06 until you know how. 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.46 The other way to hurt yourself is to take things that are not 00:10:27.49\00:10:30.87 specific for your condition or maybe contraindicated 00:10:30.90\00:10:34.05 in your condition. 00:10:34.08\00:10:35.45 And so again, education is paramount! 00:10:35.48\00:10:38.21 I noticed in your book, you mentioned that 00:10:38.24\00:10:40.31 there's treatment for PMS, so-called premenstrual syndrome 00:10:40.34\00:10:47.09 I'm sure a lot of our viewers are interested in that... 00:10:47.12\00:10:49.44 What would you say they would do 00:10:49.47\00:10:51.08 with a plant to take care of that? 00:10:51.11\00:10:53.61 Okay, PMS, premenstrual syndrome I call it Pa and Ma squabbling. 00:10:53.64\00:10:58.37 I like to come up with more colloquial forms for all these 00:10:58.40\00:11:03.62 things just to keep them in perspective in my mind. 00:11:03.65\00:11:07.06 We have found that hormone balances can come from 00:11:07.09\00:11:11.67 your foods; hormone imbalances certainly come from our foods. 00:11:11.70\00:11:15.08 A few years ago, my wife and I, we work together, 00:11:15.11\00:11:19.34 we were asking one another the question... 00:11:19.37\00:11:20.84 "Why are so many women experiencing hormone imbalances" 00:11:20.87\00:11:24.62 And the answers came from some research that 00:11:24.65\00:11:29.90 someone shared with us... Most of it is from our food. 00:11:29.93\00:11:34.52 Because we are eating food that comes through the food chain 00:11:34.55\00:11:38.13 the commercial pesticides, the commercial herbicides, 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.88 a lot of these being systemic 00:11:40.91\00:11:42.38 actually are IN OUR FOOD as we eat it... 00:11:42.41\00:11:45.14 And they block our body's capacity to maintain 00:11:45.17\00:11:48.91 a proper hormone balance. 00:11:48.94\00:11:50.31 So which one causes PMS? 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.17 Well, I know that the one that probably is associated 00:11:52.20\00:11:56.63 with the most of it are the systemic herbicides 00:11:56.66\00:11:59.41 that they spray in the corn fields 00:11:59.44\00:12:00.81 to prevent weeds from coming up. 00:12:00.84\00:12:03.21 But they're ALL directly related. 00:12:03.24\00:12:06.22 We're finding that to help people overcome that... 00:12:06.25\00:12:08.87 I tell people the best thing you can do is eat organic 00:12:08.90\00:12:11.89 produce that you raise yourself, 00:12:11.92\00:12:13.29 rather than being dependent on what I call plastic food 00:12:13.32\00:12:16.93 that comes from chemicals. 00:12:16.96\00:12:18.33 While you don't have that, you can help to maintain 00:12:18.36\00:12:21.92 some balance through some intervention... 00:12:21.95\00:12:25.98 Soy products help that. 00:12:26.01\00:12:28.97 There are some isoflavones and some estrogenic-type 00:12:29.00\00:12:33.57 substances that you can use. 00:12:33.60\00:12:35.71 Eat a lot of the soy products, soymilk, soy powders... 00:12:35.74\00:12:39.14 You can actually get concentrated 00:12:39.17\00:12:40.54 soy isoflavones today in health food stores. 00:12:40.57\00:12:45.09 We also find that flaxseed oil helps to balance the hormones... 00:12:45.12\00:12:49.79 And we've got a couple of regular medicinal herbs 00:12:49.82\00:12:52.87 that work VERY WELL... 00:12:52.90\00:12:54.27 One is a wild Mexican yam which contains some precursors 00:12:54.30\00:12:58.90 that people can actually use as 00:12:58.93\00:13:00.88 building blocks to make their own hormones. 00:13:00.91\00:13:03.57 So the wild Mexican yam is what helps with PMS? Correct! 00:13:03.60\00:13:06.93 So if you're feeling like a wild Mexican yam, 00:13:06.96\00:13:09.31 just have a few of them, it will calm you down. Right 00:13:09.34\00:13:12.75 There are about 600 varieties of wild yams; 00:13:12.78\00:13:17.03 about 14 to 16 actually contain the hormonal precursors 00:13:17.06\00:13:21.01 that we're looking for, so again, you have to know 00:13:21.04\00:13:24.37 which direction you're headed or at least trust a 00:13:24.40\00:13:27.05 particular brand name of something that has it. 00:13:27.08\00:13:29.94 There's another herb called the "chaste tree" 00:13:29.97\00:13:33.53 Actually, it's a very big herb, it's the chaste tree berry, 00:13:33.56\00:13:37.20 and I like to mix the chaste tree berries 00:13:37.23\00:13:39.13 with the wild yam in the powdered form, 00:13:39.16\00:13:41.62 and have the ladies take that in capsulated form. 00:13:41.65\00:13:45.30 We've used those around the 00:13:45.33\00:13:46.70 house for quite a number of years. 00:13:46.73\00:13:48.10 I have a wife and 2 teenage daughters, 00:13:48.13\00:13:49.57 and so I came up with these in self-defense! 00:13:49.60\00:13:51.73 OH, so there's an ACTUAL REASON 00:13:51.76\00:13:53.45 for you knowing so much. 00:13:53.48\00:13:54.85 Yeah, you know, there was some motivation, 00:13:54.88\00:13:56.94 and I call them "happy pills" 00:13:56.97\00:13:58.97 I've had them a time or two saying... "I need to take those" 00:13:59.00\00:14:01.99 When we come back, we're going to be looking at some things 00:14:02.02\00:14:05.28 in your book that I think is going to be fun, 00:14:05.31\00:14:07.01 and it's going to be interesting 00:14:07.04\00:14:08.46 for those who are joining us today. 00:14:08.49\00:14:11.11 We're going to be looking at things like... infusion, 00:14:11.14\00:14:13.48 decoction, infusional decoction, tincture, capsules, poultices, 00:14:13.51\00:14:22.10 infused oils and salve. 00:14:22.13\00:14:23.71 So, when we come back, join us. 00:14:23.74\00:14:25.91 We are going to be looking at some things that are 00:14:25.94\00:14:28.32 very practical... how you get involved in 00:14:28.35\00:14:30.20 making these very things for your own use... Pretty close 00:16:07.00\00:16:08.84 And why don't you just work us through this... 00:16:08.87\00:16:11.28 We have a lot to cover, and I'll just be your hands 00:16:11.31\00:16:14.73 and kind of help you as we talk back and forth. 00:16:14.76\00:16:17.65 What, first of all, is an infusion? 00:16:17.68\00:16:19.27 Okay Don... An infusion is a tea. 00:16:19.30\00:16:21.99 One of the things that is a little confusing. 00:16:22.02\00:16:24.44 When I first picked up my first book, 00:16:24.47\00:16:26.17 I saw... infusions, decoctions, infusional decoctions, 00:16:26.20\00:16:30.90 and I said... this looks like confusions and concoctions to me 00:16:30.93\00:16:34.17 What I didn't really understand that I finally did understand 00:16:34.20\00:16:37.43 later was that they are just different names for 00:16:37.46\00:16:41.45 similar things because we treat different types of plants, 00:16:41.48\00:16:45.32 and different parts of the plants differently 00:16:45.35\00:16:47.19 as we extract their medicinal properties out of those. 00:16:47.22\00:16:50.18 And really, all of those are just a different type of 00:16:50.21\00:16:52.95 word for word "tea" but we make different kinds of teas. 00:16:52.98\00:16:56.59 And maybe just to illustrate what we're doing... 00:16:56.62\00:16:58.63 We'll grab a couple of these here, 00:16:58.66\00:17:00.41 and maybe you can help me in the kitchen. 00:17:00.44\00:17:01.92 Does your wife make you work in the kitchen ever? 00:17:01.95\00:17:04.13 We're making now an infusion. Right... A tea 00:17:04.16\00:17:07.66 An infusion is what we do when we use the light part of a plant 00:17:07.69\00:17:11.69 like the leaf or the blossom, or a light part of the stem. 00:17:11.72\00:17:16.57 And, if you want to just give me a little bit of help here, 00:17:16.60\00:17:19.56 we're going to show the people something that they probably 00:17:19.59\00:17:21.88 are not used to doing, but I don't like to clean up messes. 00:17:21.91\00:17:25.01 When I work in the kitchen, my wife made me 00:17:25.04\00:17:26.75 clean up all of my own messes, and I got really tired of that, 00:17:26.78\00:17:29.21 and so I learned to be ingenious and lazy at the same time. 00:17:29.24\00:17:32.78 That's a coffee filter, like you'd use for a coffee machine. 00:17:32.81\00:17:35.84 Get it at any store, anywhere. Yeah, they're terribly cheap. 00:17:35.87\00:17:40.12 Rule of thumb... about a teaspoon for 1 cup of water 00:17:40.15\00:17:45.22 I work in rules of thumbs rather than scientific ratios here. 00:17:45.25\00:17:48.88 So what kind of tea is this we're making... 00:17:48.91\00:17:50.29 Okay, that's comfrey. 00:17:50.32\00:17:51.93 That would make a comfrey tea 00:17:51.96\00:17:53.54 which we talked about in an earlier time. 00:17:53.57\00:17:56.97 Might work for as an expectorant. 00:17:57.00\00:17:59.70 Help someone cough, in other words. Yeah 00:17:59.73\00:18:02.12 And then you what... fold this up like a teabag? Yeah 00:18:02.15\00:18:04.70 If you'll hold that right up, and... 00:18:04.73\00:18:06.24 Would I fold it over again, or not? 00:18:06.27\00:18:09.45 Oh probably about 3 or 4 times 00:18:09.48\00:18:11.87 so that the top is going to be somewhat leak-proof. 00:18:11.90\00:18:14.89 And I just take a household office stapler, 00:18:14.92\00:18:18.17 and I've got an instant teabag, 00:18:18.20\00:18:19.57 and I don't have to strain the stuff out. 00:18:19.60\00:18:21.32 So I just put that in my... Put it in our... okay 00:18:21.35\00:18:25.03 Now here's where the confusion comes that we want to clarify. 00:18:25.06\00:18:28.33 These are the light parts of the plant. 00:18:28.36\00:18:31.04 So what we want to do is, we want to have a cup of water 00:18:31.07\00:18:34.45 in our pot before we even put this in, 00:18:34.48\00:18:37.84 and we'll try not to spill this. 00:18:37.87\00:18:40.88 Good shot... Okay, we've got a cup of water in there. 00:18:40.92\00:18:43.14 We would put it on our heat source... 00:18:43.17\00:18:45.17 Open fire, hot plate, whatever we're going to 00:18:45.20\00:18:49.53 put it on, kitchen stove. 00:18:49.56\00:18:50.99 We're going to bring this to a boil. 00:18:51.02\00:18:52.90 We're going to remove that from the fire. 00:18:52.93\00:18:55.47 You're going to pop that in and put the lid on it. 00:18:55.50\00:18:57.63 So we take it from the fire. 00:18:57.66\00:18:59.14 So someone that's taking notes, what are the steps again? 00:18:59.17\00:19:01.37 Okay, put the water in. Bring it to a boil. 00:19:01.40\00:19:04.02 We put this in our teabag... Take it off the fire 00:19:04.05\00:19:06.51 Take it off the fire. Put the cover on it immediately. 00:19:06.54\00:19:08.46 Put the cover on. Put this here and then 00:19:08.49\00:19:10.01 put the cover on, and let it cool. 00:19:10.04\00:19:12.98 Now what's happening is the medicinal qualities 00:19:13.01\00:19:16.33 of the aerial parts of the plant we have a lot of things 00:19:16.36\00:19:18.32 called "volatile oils" and those would evaporate 00:19:18.35\00:19:21.42 and disappear if we didn't put the lid on. 00:19:21.45\00:19:23.92 So it keeps it right in there? Right 00:19:23.95\00:19:26.03 The water is just a solvent and the heat is a catalyst... 00:19:26.06\00:19:29.44 that causes the extraction process to take place. 00:19:29.47\00:19:32.92 Decoction... Now you notice that some of the plants - 00:19:32.95\00:19:36.73 This was an infusion, now this is a decoction. Right 00:19:36.76\00:19:39.66 Barks, nuts, roots those types of things. 00:19:39.69\00:19:43.42 Let's do it again. Put some water in here. Right 00:19:43.45\00:19:46.72 We're going to treat this one a little bit differently. 00:19:46.75\00:19:48.83 And you're making another teabag. 00:19:48.86\00:19:53.60 I'm going to make another handy-dandy teabag. 00:19:53.63\00:19:57.54 This is kind of fun, isn't it? Oh I love it... 00:19:57.57\00:20:00.15 As long as I don't have to 00:20:00.18\00:20:01.55 clean up the mess... All those ladies out there are saying, 00:20:01.58\00:20:03.05 "Look at these 2 men in the kitchen... watch out" 00:20:03.09\00:20:05.32 All right, I've got it up, it's now boiling, you can see that. 00:20:05.35\00:20:08.84 Okay, we're going to leave this one simmering 00:20:08.87\00:20:10.82 on the stove when we put this in. 00:20:10.85\00:20:12.38 Okay, I bring it to a boil? 00:20:12.41\00:20:13.86 Bring it to a good simmer. Simmer... 00:20:13.89\00:20:15.60 Not a rolling boil, but a good simmer. Put this in... 00:20:15.63\00:20:17.42 Put it in, put the lid on. Okay 00:20:17.45\00:20:19.86 Now, depending on how fine the particles are, 00:20:19.89\00:20:23.27 you know you work in the kitchen and some times you follow 00:20:23.30\00:20:27.12 a recipe and sometimes you follow your intuition. 00:20:27.15\00:20:29.75 You'll have to... if it's large granules, 00:20:29.78\00:20:31.97 you leave it run longer. 00:20:32.00\00:20:33.37 If it's very fine granules, or actually into a powder, 00:20:33.40\00:20:35.47 you'll let it simmer a shorter period of time. 00:20:35.50\00:20:37.97 So we're between 5 to 25 minutes depending on how coarse it is. 00:20:38.00\00:20:43.42 The reason for this is these parts of the plants 00:20:43.45\00:20:45.92 like the roots, the rhizomes, the nuts, and the hard berries, 00:20:45.95\00:20:48.75 and the barks and that type of thing... 00:20:48.78\00:20:50.15 They have a lot of material that's very dense, 00:20:50.18\00:20:53.36 and it's going to take a lot of energy to get it out of there. 00:20:53.39\00:20:56.26 To get it out and extract it, so it will take a while 00:20:56.29\00:20:58.69 being associated with the catalyst and the 00:20:58.72\00:21:02.10 extraction process to make it happen. 00:21:02.13\00:21:04.94 So that's a decoction! Okay, that's a decoction. 00:21:04.97\00:21:07.66 So the difference here is really one of length of time, 00:21:07.69\00:21:11.19 and one is simmering and one is on the fire. Right 00:21:11.22\00:21:16.81 This one is off, this one is on! 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.38 Infusion is off. Decoction is on! Okay 00:21:18.41\00:21:21.26 Where the confusion comes, is when we have to take 00:21:21.29\00:21:23.65 the next step. What's the next step? 00:21:23.68\00:21:25.21 The next step is what's called a 00:21:25.24\00:21:26.92 ...I'm going to get it confused too, 00:21:26.95\00:21:28.84 an infusional decoction. 00:21:28.87\00:21:30.45 Is that just mixing these together? 00:21:30.48\00:21:31.87 Okay, that's one way to do it. 00:21:31.90\00:21:33.57 You can just take and make them individually... 00:21:33.60\00:21:37.11 because the theory here is... 00:21:37.14\00:21:39.23 What if you mix the plants together, 00:21:39.26\00:21:41.20 and tried to make them at the same time... 00:21:41.23\00:21:42.82 While you're simmering the bark, you're destroying the leaf. 00:21:42.85\00:21:47.90 It's too hot... Right, so they can't be together 00:21:47.93\00:21:50.58 So you've got the choice to either make them together, 00:21:50.61\00:21:53.03 which isn't going to work, or make them separately, 00:21:53.06\00:21:57.43 mix them together. 00:21:57.46\00:21:58.83 Now, me and my laziness, I don't like to wash 2 kettles. 00:21:58.86\00:22:01.64 So what I would do is I would make this one first. 00:22:01.67\00:22:06.18 Make the decoction first with the boiling... Right 00:22:06.21\00:22:09.31 And when it comes to... Let's say I've determined 00:22:09.34\00:22:11.10 15 minutes for this one. I say it's done. 00:22:11.13\00:22:14.69 I'm going to take it off the heat; 00:22:14.72\00:22:16.39 I'd drop my other one in there, put the cover on it, 00:22:16.42\00:22:20.04 and I've got an infusional decoction with 00:22:20.07\00:22:21.90 only 1 pan to wash. 00:22:21.93\00:22:23.32 You see, in my house, my wife makes me clean up 00:22:23.35\00:22:25.96 anything that I make, as far as a mess in the kitchen. 00:22:25.99\00:22:28.40 I think all the wives would agree, especially if you're 00:22:28.43\00:22:31.59 starting this now and your husband is getting into this, 00:22:31.62\00:22:35.52 you're going to ask him to clean things up, aren't you? 00:22:35.55\00:22:37.51 What next? What's another? 00:22:37.54\00:22:39.70 Let's do some work with some poultices. 00:22:39.73\00:22:43.06 Poultices! Okay, a poultice would be something... 00:22:43.09\00:22:45.00 What would we do with a poultice? 00:22:45.03\00:22:46.40 A poultice is for drawing... Drawing things out, 00:22:46.43\00:22:49.15 like you have an inflammation 00:22:49.18\00:22:50.55 and you want it to go down, the swelling. Right 00:22:50.58\00:22:53.35 My first experience with doing this is when I was, 00:22:53.38\00:22:56.07 you know as we were talking about earlier, 00:22:56.10\00:22:57.57 I got a good case of poison ivy in the woods here. 00:22:57.60\00:23:01.21 So you're going to make a poison ivy poultice. 00:23:01.24\00:23:03.07 Yeah, this would work for an infection, 00:23:03.10\00:23:05.00 or poison ivy or whatever. 00:23:05.03\00:23:06.64 I've mixed together some flaxseed meal... 00:23:06.67\00:23:09.81 What does the flax do? 00:23:09.84\00:23:11.51 It adds a binder and it actually has, what we call, 00:23:11.54\00:23:14.88 an excipient, it helps to draw. 00:23:14.91\00:23:16.77 And then this looks like charcoal along with it. Correct 00:23:16.80\00:23:19.21 Now what we want is to get several spoonfuls of water 00:23:19.24\00:23:21.69 that we can actually mix in here, 00:23:21.72\00:23:23.29 and if you want to stir, I'll add water, 00:23:23.32\00:23:26.33 and we want a paste. 00:23:26.36\00:23:27.73 Now, it's best if we would do this 00:23:27.76\00:23:30.94 like in a skillet, on low heat because the water 00:23:30.97\00:23:34.57 and the heat together are going to create sort of a gel. 00:23:34.60\00:23:40.98 You're actually going to put this on someone. 00:23:41.01\00:23:45.31 Let's stir these guys down 00:23:45.34\00:23:47.16 around the edges here just a little bit. 00:23:47.19\00:23:48.79 All right! Now there are so many 00:23:48.82\00:23:52.86 ways that people want to make poultices. 00:23:52.89\00:23:54.44 You know, some people say, you take and put your stuff 00:23:54.47\00:23:56.20 in a paper towel, and you put it on and you wrap it 00:23:56.23\00:23:58.04 with Saran wrap, or you put it in a piece of cloth. 00:23:58.07\00:24:00.68 The problem that I find out is most of this stuff 00:24:00.71\00:24:02.90 is too messy to work with, and so what I have here 00:24:02.93\00:24:06.15 ...Now you'll recognize this; a piece of Chux 00:24:06.18\00:24:09.42 or an incontinent pad. 00:24:09.45\00:24:11.15 You know, you buy these at hospital supplies... 00:24:11.18\00:24:13.19 Like a big diaper... Yeah A flat diaper. Correct! 00:24:13.22\00:24:16.80 They use a lot of these in nursing homes. 00:24:16.83\00:24:18.39 I just bought a lot of these things and this is what I make 00:24:18.42\00:24:21.33 my poultices with. 00:24:21.36\00:24:22.73 You know, you've got the top layer that will isolate 00:24:22.76\00:24:25.63 the material to some extent from the person, 00:24:25.66\00:24:29.12 so it isn't as messy. 00:24:29.15\00:24:30.67 So top layer, you mean that's the one that's going to be 00:24:30.70\00:24:33.17 next to the face or hand or whatever. Right 00:24:33.20\00:24:36.26 And some of this is going to bleed through; 00:24:36.29\00:24:37.78 you see, I'm getting a little bit of this stuff on my hands. 00:24:37.81\00:24:39.30 You see how they put it right in there and right underneath, 00:24:39.33\00:24:43.56 and then we cover that up okay. 00:24:43.59\00:24:47.43 Now, you see it's got its plastic on its back, 00:24:47.46\00:24:50.55 it's not going to leak all over on us. 00:24:50.58\00:24:51.96 I take it and roll it up on the edges, 00:24:51.99\00:24:55.72 and I take my stapler and I stitch this thing all up. 00:24:55.75\00:24:59.20 Okay, my stapler jammed. I can see that. 00:24:59.23\00:25:00.92 Staplers aren't supposed to jam when you're in stress, right? 00:25:00.95\00:25:04.10 Now we take and stitch this thing all up... 00:25:04.13\00:25:08.53 And you want to remember which way you're going to put 00:25:08.56\00:25:10.09 your points of your staples so 00:25:10.12\00:25:11.49 that they aren't irritating your skin. 00:25:11.52\00:25:12.97 That's a good point. 00:25:13.00\00:25:16.05 I try to think these things through 00:25:16.08\00:25:17.45 to make them as practical as we possibly can. 00:25:17.48\00:25:20.87 And see, now we have these 00:25:20.90\00:25:23.39 other 2 edges were already factory done, 00:25:23.42\00:25:25.47 but we have something that now will not leak all over you, 00:25:25.50\00:25:29.39 and if it was the back of your hand, you could put it on 00:25:29.42\00:25:31.80 there... take an Ace bandage, flexible bandage, 00:25:31.83\00:25:35.25 and wrap that thing all up and keep it on. 00:25:35.28\00:25:36.84 And the charcoal draws it out and the flaxseed binds to it... 00:25:36.87\00:25:40.34 So, one draws it out and the other hooks on to it. 00:25:40.37\00:25:42.32 Is that what you're saying? Correct 00:25:42.35\00:25:44.01 Well, excellent! So then how long would I leave 00:25:44.04\00:25:45.74 a poultice like this on? 00:25:45.77\00:25:47.74 It depends how big the poultice is, 00:25:47.77\00:25:49.60 and had bad the inflammation or the infection would be, 00:25:49.63\00:25:52.17 but most of the time, we can leave things on 4-8 hours. 00:25:52.20\00:25:55.72 But after about 8 hours, 00:25:55.75\00:25:57.19 it's done all the work that it's going to do. 00:25:57.22\00:25:59.26 In fact, maybe 4-6 hours might 00:25:59.29\00:26:01.96 be a little better period of time. 00:26:01.99\00:26:03.91 You can intensify the action of the poultice by putting 00:26:03.94\00:26:06.73 something hot over the top it, like a heating pad sometimes 00:26:06.76\00:26:09.85 Good! Well let's go to the next one... 00:26:09.88\00:26:11.49 We only have about 1-1/2 minutes left. 00:26:11.52\00:26:14.27 What's this for... I know the people would want to see this! 00:26:14.30\00:26:18.66 Have you ever gone to a store and you notice that a 00:26:18.69\00:26:20.61 bottle of herbal preparation 00:26:20.64\00:26:23.13 costs about $9.95 or whatever for a bottle. 00:26:23.16\00:26:28.14 You've got about 50 cents worth of capsules. 00:26:28.17\00:26:33.82 These are vegetable glycerin capsules. 00:26:33.85\00:26:35.71 You can help me just pop these in. 00:26:35.74\00:26:37.37 We're going to take the lids, put them on the top, 00:26:37.40\00:26:39.42 and we're going to put the bottoms in here. 00:26:39.45\00:26:42.83 Okay, and what we would do is we'd put some of the 00:26:42.86\00:26:46.81 herbal powder right in there. 00:26:46.84\00:26:50.04 Let's see how you do that. 00:26:50.07\00:26:52.18 This is fun, isn't it? 00:26:52.21\00:26:53.58 This is fun... as long as we don't have to clean up the mess, 00:26:53.61\00:26:55.94 this is fun! 00:26:55.97\00:26:58.30 Now this will make 50 at a time, 00:26:58.33\00:27:00.15 and we're just going to do a few of them here. 00:27:00.18\00:27:03.70 Then see, we drop those little cams down... 00:27:03.73\00:27:05.57 just pop back up on top, we pull these out, 00:27:05.60\00:27:08.50 and we've got an instant capsule. 00:27:08.53\00:27:12.22 You literally can take a $9 bottle of pills, 00:27:12.25\00:27:15.26 and you can make your own for about $1.50... 00:27:15.29\00:27:18.60 you know, depending on the price of the herbs. 00:27:18.63\00:27:20.44 So once you get the things together that you know 00:27:20.47\00:27:22.26 needs to be in that pill like whatever it is... 00:27:22.29\00:27:24.82 Echinacea - would that be something 00:27:24.85\00:27:26.59 you'd put in a pill like that? 00:27:26.62\00:27:27.99 Right, you can save a lot of money 00:27:28.02\00:27:29.39 with these types of devices. 00:27:29.42\00:27:30.79 We've been talking to Rob McClintock 00:27:30.82\00:27:34.59 If you want more information, please give us a call 00:27:34.62\00:27:37.70 and you can find ways to have health for a lifetime! 00:27:37.73\00:27:40.78
