The opinions and ideas 00:00:07.59\00:00:10.44 expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:10.45\00:00:12.22 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:12.96\00:00:14.51 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:16.83\00:00:17.80 Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:51.16\00:00:53.58 I'm Don Mackintosh and today we're joined with 00:00:54.57\00:00:57.14 Dr. Clarence Ing who is a physician at the 00:00:57.15\00:00:59.88 Weimar Institute in California, 00:00:59.89\00:01:01.55 welcome Dr. Ing. It's great to be here Don. 00:01:01.56\00:01:04.13 Today we're going to talk about a subject 00:01:04.52\00:01:06.04 that's strikes fear in the hearts of many when 00:01:06.05\00:01:07.89 they first here that word and that word is cancer. 00:01:07.90\00:01:10.49 What is cancer? Why should we 00:01:11.22\00:01:12.25 be concerned with it? 00:01:12.26\00:01:13.25 Well, cancer is a disease that most people would 00:01:13.82\00:01:16.69 rather avoid myself included. 00:01:16.70\00:01:18.72 But, cancer basically it's a group of about a 00:01:19.79\00:01:22.23 100 diseases and it's related or caused, 00:01:22.24\00:01:26.02 related to two things, one is the cell instead 00:01:26.03\00:01:29.78 of going to with the regular size or 00:01:29.79\00:01:31.24 normal size and then stop and grow, 00:01:31.25\00:01:32.84 it grows larger then it should be. 00:01:32.85\00:01:35.69 And then the next thing is the cell goes to, 00:01:36.41\00:01:39.95 move to parts of the body where it doesn't belong. 00:01:39.96\00:01:42.42 So, basically cancer is one of these two things. 00:01:42.97\00:01:45.52 Cell grows larger then it should be, 00:01:45.53\00:01:47.10 and it travels to places where it shouldn't be. 00:01:47.73\00:01:49.26 And this is what causes, this is what cancer 00:01:50.01\00:01:52.51 is all about. And this involves various parts of 00:01:52.52\00:01:55.21 the body, can involve the brain, the lung, 00:01:55.22\00:01:57.68 the kidneys, the stomach you know the 00:01:58.56\00:02:00.87 gastrointestinal tract other parts of the body. 00:02:00.88\00:02:02.51 So, that's what cancer is about. 00:02:03.05\00:02:04.31 Now the question is why do we get cancer. 00:02:04.99\00:02:07.41 Why do so many people have cancer, 00:02:08.61\00:02:10.27 is there anything that we can do to the lower 00:02:10.28\00:02:11.92 our risk with cancer in the lifestyle? 00:02:11.93\00:02:13.73 And the answer is yes there is. 00:02:14.30\00:02:15.45 Well taking someone like yourself, 00:02:16.72\00:02:17.94 you are from China originally your family is, 00:02:17.95\00:02:20.41 is that correct? Right. And I know that the 00:02:20.42\00:02:22.19 rural Chinese at least I've been led to believe 00:02:22.20\00:02:25.34 they don't have as much as incident of cancer. 00:02:25.35\00:02:27.73 Why is that we have more cancer in America? Well 00:02:27.74\00:02:29.62 I think that is related again to our lifestyle, 00:02:30.22\00:02:33.63 and the parts of our lifestyle it's particularly 00:02:34.23\00:02:36.23 relate to I believe our diet. And our 00:02:36.24\00:02:39.18 activity levels, and we find that on the 00:02:39.19\00:02:43.15 typical American diet or standard American 00:02:43.16\00:02:46.08 diet you will notice that the acronym for 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.84 Standard American Diet is SAD which means SAD. 00:02:48.85\00:02:52.32 And it really is kind of sad in many respects 00:02:53.12\00:02:55.69 as far as nutrition goes, but the standard 00:02:55.70\00:02:58.00 American diet is high in fat. It's high in refined 00:02:58.01\00:03:01.60 foods, it's high in sugar and it's high in protein. 00:03:01.61\00:03:04.53 And the fat and the protein in the American 00:03:05.23\00:03:07.83 diet primarily come from animal sources. 00:03:07.84\00:03:10.11 Which then increases the risk of certain types of 00:03:10.93\00:03:13.01 cancers. It's interesting that as we read the 00:03:13.02\00:03:16.50 medical literature we find that there seems 00:03:16.51\00:03:19.26 to be a relationship between meat and certain 00:03:19.27\00:03:21.46 type of cancers. When you cook meat, 00:03:21.47\00:03:24.16 one of the, when you cook meat you form 00:03:25.02\00:03:27.04 something called heterocyclic aromatic 00:03:27.05\00:03:29.31 amines. What's that? 00:03:29.32\00:03:30.95 Well that's a big word, but this big word seems 00:03:31.53\00:03:33.90 to be related, it's a Carcinogen and it increases 00:03:33.91\00:03:37.36 the risk for certain types of cancers. 00:03:37.37\00:03:39.39 Possibly breast cancer, colon cancer and 00:03:39.91\00:03:42.62 prostate cancer. And well, what's the best way 00:03:42.63\00:03:46.28 to avoid this in cooking meat, 00:03:46.29\00:03:48.50 well I guess the best way to avoid it is not 00:03:48.51\00:03:50.72 to cook the meat and not to eat the meat. 00:03:50.73\00:03:53.10 But, of course some people say but you know doc, 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.49 I can't live without my meat. 00:03:56.50\00:03:58.21 The other interesting thing is that we find 00:03:58.89\00:04:02.12 that may of the ways of cooking meat produce 00:04:02.13\00:04:04.94 carcinogens, an example is charcoal broiling 00:04:04.95\00:04:08.24 meats, like charcoal broiled steaks or 00:04:08.89\00:04:10.88 hamburgers whatever they maybe. 00:04:10.89\00:04:12.43 When you charcoal broil the food, the fat melts, 00:04:13.34\00:04:16.21 it falls down into the charcoal and burns, 00:04:16.22\00:04:18.46 it forms a chemical, a very potent chemical 00:04:19.21\00:04:21.64 called Benzopyrene. From 3 ½ ounces of meat 00:04:21.65\00:04:26.04 charcoal broiled, you would get the same 00:04:26.78\00:04:28.86 amount of benzopyrene as you would get 00:04:28.87\00:04:30.75 from the smoking 60 cigarettes, 00:04:30.76\00:04:33.73 wow! Now you may not smoke, 00:04:33.74\00:04:35.28 but if you have that charcoal broiled 00:04:35.29\00:04:36.67 hamburger or steak, you're getting 00:04:36.68\00:04:38.75 the benzopyrene. So, if you're going to eat 00:04:38.76\00:04:40.70 meat and you're going to cook it, 00:04:40.71\00:04:42.32 what's the best thing to do, bake it? 00:04:43.77\00:04:45.18 It's, no, because baking produces another 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.35 carcinogen called Malonaldehyde. 00:04:48.36\00:04:51.65 What would you do? Well it's the best way to, 00:04:53.41\00:04:55.48 if you are gonna eat it I mean. 00:04:55.49\00:04:56.63 If you are going to eat the safest way 00:04:56.64\00:04:58.20 that I know of or I like to put the least 00:04:58.21\00:05:01.80 dangerous way that I know of is to use 00:05:01.81\00:05:03.64 it in soups or in stews. Because if you go out 00:05:03.65\00:05:06.77 and you have you fry your meat, 00:05:06.78\00:05:08.82 well when you fry your meat you form some 00:05:09.78\00:05:12.30 other compounds, one of them is called 00:05:12.31\00:05:13.90 Nitrosamine when you fry a meat. 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.93 And another one is methylcholanthrene. 00:05:16.55\00:05:19.39 These are some carcinogens that 00:05:20.07\00:05:21.66 are formed when you fry the meat. 00:05:21.67\00:05:23.21 So, all those Hibachis, these all those things 00:05:23.82\00:05:25.75 we see in the backyard where people are 00:05:25.76\00:05:27.40 sitting around there and they have that nice 00:05:28.11\00:05:29.12 bed of charcoal, that's like smoking 00:05:29.13\00:05:31.61 60-100 cigarettes each time you 00:05:31.62\00:05:33.39 eat a piece of meat like that. 00:05:33.40\00:05:34.70 Yes, if it's 3 ½ ounces that's equivalent 00:05:34.71\00:05:37.49 of you can eat same amount of Benzopyrene 00:05:37.50\00:05:39.96 as you would from smoking from 60 cigarettes. 00:05:39.97\00:05:42.31 What about fish? Fish, it's gonna be same 00:05:42.32\00:05:44.89 if the fat melts and falls into the charcoal, 00:05:44.90\00:05:47.20 so there again like I said the least dangerous 00:05:48.36\00:05:52.05 way of preparing your meat is to make it into 00:05:52.06\00:05:56.87 soups or stews. If you fry the meat and 00:05:56.88\00:06:01.74 it's burned or their again you have problem 00:06:01.75\00:06:04.59 with carcinogens. You know it's interesting 00:06:04.60\00:06:07.16 that many years ago a gray wise lady 00:06:07.17\00:06:12.06 had something to say about that, she says, 00:06:12.72\00:06:14.73 animals are becoming more and more diseased 00:06:14.74\00:06:16.57 and it will not be long until many besides 00:06:16.58\00:06:19.03 Seventh-day Adventists, you know discarded 00:06:19.04\00:06:21.49 or stop eating them. It's interesting that 00:06:21.50\00:06:24.91 in the United Kingdom, England when mad 00:06:24.92\00:06:29.15 cow disease first become apparent in well 00:06:29.16\00:06:33.42 was in 1986 is when it started to appear in 00:06:33.43\00:06:37.07 human beings or a form or variant of this, 00:06:37.08\00:06:39.88 more and more people were becoming vegetarians. 00:06:41.74\00:06:44.27 In fact when I was in Asia last year someone 00:06:45.17\00:06:48.19 brought me a cartoon from a newspaper in 00:06:48.20\00:06:51.13 Hong Kong, Hong Kong at this time they 00:06:51.14\00:06:53.68 would had a problem with something 00:06:53.69\00:06:55.18 I think they called like the red tide, 00:06:55.19\00:06:57.53 they would had the chicken flu, 00:06:58.15\00:06:59.39 they had heard about mad cow disease and 00:06:59.97\00:07:01.82 they thought on the cartoon was may be 00:07:01.83\00:07:03.75 I should become a vegetarian. 00:07:03.76\00:07:05.57 And I really think that that's probably good 00:07:06.73\00:07:09.54 advise when you think of the risk from disease, 00:07:09.55\00:07:12.65 because as we eat meat and fish and chicken 00:07:13.36\00:07:17.52 which contain cholesterol and extra protein 00:07:17.53\00:07:20.92 that we need, it also increases our risk for 00:07:20.93\00:07:22.56 heart disease, for diabetes, for high blood 00:07:22.57\00:07:26.33 pressure as well as cancer. 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.01 So, the same diet that causes or sets people 00:07:28.69\00:07:31.04 for cancer sets them up for many of these 00:07:31.78\00:07:33.99 other diseases, well let me just ask you 00:07:34.00\00:07:37.14 a question that might make some people 00:07:37.15\00:07:38.52 a little uncomfortable a lot of people that 00:07:38.53\00:07:40.70 are what would you call lacto-ovo vegetarians 00:07:41.25\00:07:43.88 they feel very comfortable with everything 00:07:43.89\00:07:45.09 you have said, they feel the doctor is on 00:07:45.10\00:07:47.31 my side is there anything else these people 00:07:47.32\00:07:49.88 should worry about, should we move 00:07:49.89\00:07:54.81 away from other things as well. 00:07:54.82\00:07:56.09 Well when we study we'll start with eggs first, 00:07:56.86\00:07:59.45 as we looked at eggs we find that eggs 00:08:01.07\00:08:04.01 even uncracked eggs have been a source 00:08:04.57\00:08:07.10 of a type of salmonella calls Salmonella 00:08:07.11\00:08:09.63 Enteritidis and this can cause food poisoning, 00:08:09.64\00:08:12.78 and even an uncracked egg is definitely if, 00:08:12.79\00:08:15.04 when you buy the egg if it's cracked it's 00:08:15.65\00:08:17.99 something that you should not use. 00:08:18.00\00:08:20.42 And the other thing is with the egg you also 00:08:21.04\00:08:23.77 have the problem of the yolk which contains 00:08:23.78\00:08:26.32 the cholesterol. And the average egg yolk 00:08:26.33\00:08:29.31 contains probably somewhere as between 00:08:29.32\00:08:31.26 200 and 225 milligrams of cholesterol. 00:08:31.27\00:08:34.47 And you know that's much more cholesterol 00:08:36.10\00:08:38.46 then we really need. There is really only one 00:08:38.47\00:08:40.76 time in life when we need cholesterol in 00:08:40.77\00:08:43.24 our food and that's right after the baby is born. 00:08:43.25\00:08:45.89 And the best place to get that cholesterol 00:08:46.44\00:08:47.92 is when the baby nurses their mother's breast. 00:08:48.71\00:08:50.89 You know what they say what, 00:08:50.90\00:08:52.24 breast milk is best, and it's really true and 00:08:53.71\00:08:56.62 interestingly enough that human milk has 00:08:56.63\00:09:01.03 more cholesterol then cow's milk. 00:09:01.04\00:09:04.43 And that's the way the good Lord designed us. 00:09:05.01\00:09:06.73 So, when the baby nurses it's mother's breast, 00:09:06.98\00:09:08.62 it gets the cholesterol it needs for the normal 00:09:09.30\00:09:11.18 development of human brain. 00:09:11.19\00:09:12.64 Then after the child has been weaned you know 00:09:13.60\00:09:15.61 at 1 1/2 , 2 years of age there is no further 00:09:16.29\00:09:18.78 need to have cholesterol in the diet. 00:09:18.79\00:09:21.21 Interesting, so besides avoiding red meats 00:09:22.86\00:09:26.85 and chicken and fish you mentioned. 00:09:26.86\00:09:29.06 Are there any other things we need to be 00:09:29.63\00:09:30.78 aware of when we're trying to 00:09:30.79\00:09:33.46 prevent this disease of cancer. 00:09:33.47\00:09:35.44 Well, you know talking about fish, 00:09:36.28\00:09:38.81 just a little bit of background on fish, 00:09:38.82\00:09:41.10 it's interesting that in the Great Lakes 00:09:41.75\00:09:44.33 in the United States, the Health Departments 00:09:44.34\00:09:48.28 advise people, if a lady is pregnant she 00:09:48.29\00:09:52.23 should never during her pregnancy eat any of 00:09:52.24\00:09:55.53 the fish caught in those lakes. 00:09:55.54\00:09:56.93 You say well why is this you know, 00:09:57.64\00:09:58.84 aren't the fish okay? Well the fish maybe alive 00:09:58.85\00:10:02.67 and they maybe swimming but in their flesh 00:10:02.68\00:10:05.36 are gonna be found different types of 00:10:05.37\00:10:07.01 chemicals and other environmental toxins 00:10:07.02\00:10:10.50 and things which are produced PCBs, lead, 00:10:10.51\00:10:12.50 other things which are far less than desirable. 00:10:13.15\00:10:15.26 And if a person is not pregnant you know say 00:10:15.71\00:10:18.37 a male or children they say they should only 00:10:19.14\00:10:21.69 eat fish caught from those from the 00:10:21.70\00:10:23.46 Great Lakes maybe two or not more than 00:10:23.47\00:10:25.61 three times per month. And the serving again 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.26 would not be a large serving, 00:10:29.27\00:10:30.55 it be like 3 ounces, because of the 00:10:30.56\00:10:33.21 environmental pollution. So, we know that 00:10:33.22\00:10:35.91 this happens and even fish caught in the middle 00:10:35.92\00:10:39.43 of the ocean. The people who go out, 00:10:39.44\00:10:42.25 go fishing for these and when they bring 00:10:43.01\00:10:44.16 these in, the people who process the 00:10:44.17\00:10:47.09 fish they have to sample the fish and check 00:10:47.10\00:10:50.10 them for different types of heavy metals 00:10:50.11\00:10:53.22 like mercury and so on. And if they find these 00:10:53.23\00:10:55.83 present they're not supposed to sell them. 00:10:55.84\00:10:57.79 So, fish then are sort of like a magnet for things 00:10:59.38\00:11:01.41 that not so helpful for us. 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.62 Yes this is very true because fish serve 00:11:03.35\00:11:05.99 as a form of concentrating what's 00:11:06.00\00:11:08.46 found in environment. You may start with 00:11:08.47\00:11:10.58 something in environment that has maybe 00:11:10.59\00:11:12.56 200th part per million but then this is 00:11:13.70\00:11:16.29 concentrated, this then gets into the plant life, 00:11:16.30\00:11:20.23 smaller fish eat the plants, the bigger fish eat 00:11:21.31\00:11:23.36 the smaller fish. And the larger fish eat the 00:11:23.37\00:11:26.13 ones they had eaten the smaller fish, 00:11:26.14\00:11:27.53 and this can concentrate these poisons and 00:11:28.17\00:11:30.78 other things and the larger fish up to a 00:11:30.79\00:11:32.64 million types more, then was found in the water. 00:11:32.65\00:11:35.43 The other thing is if sewage or industrial 00:11:36.62\00:11:40.28 waste is discharged into the water, 00:11:40.29\00:11:42.14 they find that they are more fish in these areas 00:11:42.75\00:11:45.54 that have cancer and tumors. And this is a 00:11:46.13\00:11:49.29 unfortunate, a relatively common practice 00:11:50.49\00:11:52.55 in the world to discharge sewage and industrial 00:11:52.56\00:11:55.43 waste into lakes and streams and bodies 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.97 of water. They're trying to control that and 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.16 change that now. But, unfortunately it 00:12:00.17\00:12:02.61 doesn't happen fast enough. 00:12:02.62\00:12:04.18 Another interesting thing that probably most 00:12:05.25\00:12:07.70 Americans don't realize is that in the 00:12:07.71\00:12:11.13 United States every year, there are 00:12:11.14\00:12:14.52 approximately 9 billion animals that are 00:12:14.53\00:12:18.13 slaughtered for food. But, these 9 billion animals 00:12:18.14\00:12:21.61 produce tremendous amount of waste, 00:12:21.62\00:12:23.67 and that's 5000 pounds for every man, 00:12:24.65\00:12:27.98 woman, and child in the United States. 00:12:27.99\00:12:30.83 Wow! Which if you figure that out comes 00:12:30.84\00:12:32.73 out to 1 trillion 250 billion pounds of waste 00:12:32.74\00:12:37.42 and that has to be disposed of and 00:12:38.00\00:12:40.04 it always isn't, it isn't always disposed of 00:12:40.58\00:12:42.51 properly and causes a problem. 00:12:42.52\00:12:44.22 What happens if you have a big say like a big 00:12:45.66\00:12:49.53 pig farm near a river, and there is a heavy rain 00:12:49.54\00:12:53.14 and the waste flood your land, your property 00:12:53.15\00:12:56.57 and it runs over into the river, 00:12:56.58\00:12:57.75 well then the river or a steam that's nearby is 00:12:58.35\00:13:00.53 enriched and it pollutes everything downstream. 00:13:00.54\00:13:03.03 And this happens time and time again in 00:13:03.92\00:13:05.33 certain parts of the United States where they 00:13:05.34\00:13:07.11 have these large, what we call factory farms. 00:13:07.12\00:13:09.91 So, looking at cancer, then we look at macro 00:13:10.43\00:13:13.53 issues big things that many times we don't 00:13:13.54\00:13:16.26 thing about, we've talked about external 00:13:16.27\00:13:19.08 factors like chemicals, we've talked about 00:13:19.09\00:13:21.11 how those are then you know packaged if 00:13:22.10\00:13:26.08 you will by the animals that eat them, 00:13:26.09\00:13:27.75 and then we eat them. We've talked about some 00:13:27.76\00:13:29.24 of these other things like pig farms and 00:13:29.25\00:13:33.59 what not, when we come back I want to ask 00:13:33.60\00:13:37.87 some specific questions about how can 00:13:37.88\00:13:39.87 someone who is watching today know whether 00:13:39.88\00:13:41.36 they're developing cancer, 00:13:41.37\00:13:42.80 and then what to do about it to avoid that, 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.08 reverse it or whatever when we 00:13:46.09\00:13:48.39 come back after this break. 00:13:48.40\00:13:50.82 Have you found yourself wishing that you 00:13:59.90\00:14:01.35 could shed a few pounds, have you been on 00:14:01.40\00:14:03.55 a diet for most of your life, but not found 00:14:03.60\00:14:05.96 anything that will really keep the weight off, 00:14:06.04\00:14:08.11 if you have answered yes to any of these 00:14:08.65\00:14:10.38 questions then we have a solution for you that 00:14:10.44\00:14:13.01 works Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:14:13.18\00:14:16.67 have written a marvelous book that's called 00:14:16.88\00:14:18.89 Reversing Obesity Naturally and we would 00:14:19.11\00:14:21.46 like to send it to you, free of charge. They have an 00:15:09.30\00:15:12.89 exciting program there that deals with cancer 00:15:12.98\00:15:15.48 some of the things we are talking about today. 00:15:15.51\00:15:17.30 Dr. Ing, you were talking about dietary fat 00:15:17.54\00:15:20.25 in cancer, why don't we just 00:15:20.39\00:15:21.61 pickup where you left off? 00:15:21.63\00:15:22.80 Well, something interesting in relation to 00:15:23.29\00:15:25.43 that, I've been interested in this in especially 00:15:25.58\00:15:28.06 because of my own family history. Really my 00:15:28.08\00:15:31.25 father's side of the family because my father was 00:15:31.36\00:15:34.80 one of 16 children and he was a physician, 00:15:34.86\00:15:37.81 he had 11 brothers and he had 4 sisters, 00:15:37.82\00:15:40.35 wow! One sister, they were born in Hawaii, 00:15:40.41\00:15:43.54 their parents came from China they lived in Hawaii. 00:15:43.59\00:15:45.88 One sister died from cancer of the ovary. 00:15:46.36\00:15:48.95 And another sister died from cancer of the breast. 00:15:49.28\00:15:51.80 Two sisters died from, excuse me two brothers 00:15:52.46\00:15:56.02 died from cancer of the colon, that's four now. 00:15:56.03\00:15:58.85 Another brother had cancer of the colon that 00:15:59.23\00:16:01.42 was removed and he died from a massive heart 00:16:01.53\00:16:04.46 attack, but all of this is related to eating animal 00:16:04.54\00:16:07.05 fat in protein, because of that history my 00:16:07.15\00:16:11.27 father's physicians said, now you need to go 00:16:11.44\00:16:13.72 down and have an special exam called 00:16:13.75\00:16:15.37 sigmoidoscopy to check the colon disease if 00:16:15.49\00:16:17.94 there is any cancer. And so my father listened, 00:16:18.07\00:16:21.58 he did it, and right in the examination they found 00:16:21.63\00:16:24.98 a little growth called polyp, which is commonly 00:16:25.06\00:16:28.52 found and right on the tip of the polyp is 00:16:28.53\00:16:30.32 cancer just getting started. That was removed, 00:16:30.42\00:16:33.38 part of the bowel was removed. 00:16:33.71\00:16:35.23 My father is very fortunate, he lived another 00:16:35.32\00:16:37.62 18 years didn't died from cancer. 00:16:37.77\00:16:39.98 But, in that family there were 6 siblings out 00:16:40.15\00:16:43.37 of 16 who had cancer. Now I had a brother 00:16:43.41\00:16:46.86 who is 2 years younger then I'm, and we 00:16:46.97\00:16:50.49 grow up on a Standard American Diet, SAD, 00:16:50.64\00:16:54.03 sad. High in fat, high in animal protein in fat. 00:16:54.41\00:16:59.13 My brother never reached the age of 28, 00:16:59.47\00:17:02.32 he was a physician, and from what I now 00:17:02.33\00:17:05.37 have realized through studying nutrition and 00:17:05.38\00:17:08.42 cancer and so on. I believe that if my brother 00:17:08.43\00:17:12.48 and I had been raised like, my children were 00:17:12.61\00:17:15.93 raised, on a Plant Based Diet, there is a very 00:17:16.08\00:17:18.11 good chance that my brother might still be 00:17:18.14\00:17:19.69 alive today and he would not have died from 00:17:19.72\00:17:22.12 cancer. I've had other friends with somewhat 00:17:22.24\00:17:26.24 similar history, father had colon cancer, 00:17:26.30\00:17:28.50 person didn't want to be a, chose not to be 00:17:29.31\00:17:32.57 a vegetarian. Chose to eat, you know meat 00:17:32.58\00:17:35.33 and fish and chicken, not a lot. And eventually 00:17:35.41\00:17:37.73 this individual had came done with colon cancer 00:17:37.80\00:17:41.96 and eventually succumbed to it. If you've got the 00:17:42.02\00:17:44.79 risk you really need to make appropriate changes. 00:17:44.80\00:17:48.35 So, the things that you are starting today 00:17:48.46\00:17:49.89 on just good science they also strike your heart 00:17:50.01\00:17:53.28 and they say hey, if you don't listen on the 00:17:53.47\00:17:56.04 level of just intellect today. Listen on the 00:17:56.15\00:17:58.21 level of someone who's lost 00:17:58.82\00:18:00.75 significant people, right, in their life. 00:18:00.87\00:18:03.16 You know there's many people like that who have 00:18:03.40\00:18:05.17 lost family members from one of these diseases. 00:18:05.29\00:18:07.94 Lets talk a little bit about that, 00:18:08.92\00:18:10.38 lets talk about our families and what we can 00:18:10.46\00:18:13.68 be looking for in ourselves and our family 00:18:13.78\00:18:15.77 members that are warning sings for cancer. 00:18:15.81\00:18:18.76 You know maybe someone today is listening 00:18:19.13\00:18:20.64 says I might have cancer, I'm not sure. 00:18:20.76\00:18:23.81 What are some other warning sign 00:18:23.84\00:18:25.05 that could be looking for? 00:18:25.16\00:18:26.36 Okay one of them is if you a persistent 00:18:26.50\00:18:28.84 hoarseness or a cough. If we have a cough 00:18:29.30\00:18:32.22 that lasts more than a month, 00:18:32.28\00:18:33.94 I really encourage you to check with your 00:18:34.43\00:18:36.12 physician and be evaluated, especially if 00:18:36.20\00:18:39.31 you have a past history of begin a smoker, 00:18:39.32\00:18:41.44 but even if you don't if you've got a 00:18:41.56\00:18:43.25 persistent cough that doesn't go away and 00:18:43.30\00:18:45.13 just hangs in there. Then you really need to 00:18:45.14\00:18:47.77 be evaluated and have that considered. 00:18:47.78\00:18:50.50 Nowadays with the flu that's been going around, 00:18:51.31\00:18:53.47 I must admit that I have to listen and you 00:18:53.55\00:18:58.45 know I may not otherwise send those people 00:18:58.48\00:19:00.06 for an x-ray if they've had the flu recently 00:19:00.19\00:19:01.86 because I have found that now patients who 00:19:02.01\00:19:04.04 have the flu some times they will have a 00:19:04.07\00:19:06.09 cough that persists 4, or 5, 6, 7 and 8 weeks. 00:19:06.15\00:19:09.42 But, if you don't have that history and you 00:19:10.03\00:19:11.52 suddenly start coughing and that cough 00:19:11.53\00:19:13.23 doesn't go away. Go see your physician and 00:19:13.25\00:19:15.63 it maybe wise to get a chest x-ray. 00:19:16.25\00:19:18.91 Another one is unusual and sudden weight loss. 00:19:19.36\00:19:22.43 Most people would be happy to loss weight 00:19:22.81\00:19:24.42 but if you weren't trying to loss weight and 00:19:24.45\00:19:26.96 all of a sudden you found you lost weight and 00:19:26.97\00:19:29.52 there is no real reason why, you didn't change 00:19:29.56\00:19:31.75 your activity level. You didn't change your food 00:19:31.80\00:19:34.12 intake and you suddenly find you're losing weight. 00:19:34.18\00:19:36.11 You need to find out why this is important. 00:19:36.41\00:19:38.61 If you find any blood present in the stool or 00:19:39.34\00:19:43.50 if you see any blood in your urine, this is not 00:19:43.51\00:19:46.85 normal. You need to find out why, and don't say 00:19:46.92\00:19:49.72 well I'm gonna wait till it goes away. 00:19:49.81\00:19:51.30 No, go see your doctor, and find out why that's 00:19:51.36\00:19:54.07 present because it should not be there. 00:19:54.16\00:19:55.84 If you have a change in a mole, say a mole it 00:19:56.46\00:20:00.39 gets larger, it changes color or it maybe a sore 00:20:00.77\00:20:05.02 that doesn't heal, you need to find out why, 00:20:05.05\00:20:07.58 that's something that needs to be. 00:20:07.72\00:20:08.98 You need to pay attention to. Unusual bleeding 00:20:09.17\00:20:12.21 or discharge from any part of the body say 00:20:12.22\00:20:14.60 if we start to bleed from a place, in the ear, 00:20:14.67\00:20:17.39 the nose or some other part of the body and 00:20:17.40\00:20:19.65 it continues to believe, don't ignore it, 00:20:19.77\00:20:22.23 go see your doctor. If you find a lump some 00:20:22.36\00:20:25.43 place in our body, and seems to be 00:20:25.57\00:20:28.69 you know you never noticed that before 00:20:28.89\00:20:30.33 especially if it seems to be getting larger and 00:20:30.38\00:20:32.81 especially for ladies they should do self 00:20:32.98\00:20:35.01 breast examination if they find a lump in their 00:20:35.07\00:20:37.06 breast. Please go have that evaluated, 00:20:37.18\00:20:39.42 this is very important. And if you have any 00:20:39.62\00:20:42.56 trouble, you know you have indigestion that 00:20:42.66\00:20:44.95 seems to persist or you have trouble swallowing, 00:20:45.08\00:20:48.81 change in bowel or bladder habits. 00:20:49.63\00:20:52.06 For example if a person normally has a bowel 00:20:52.07\00:20:54.89 movement everyday, but the suddenly find 00:20:54.94\00:20:56.83 that they are constipated. They don't 00:20:56.92\00:20:58.23 have a bowel movement everyday. 00:20:58.34\00:21:00.14 There is something abnormal there and or if 00:21:00.74\00:21:03.52 you get diarrhea that persists, I remember a 00:21:03.57\00:21:05.89 patient who come to my office when I was 00:21:06.04\00:21:09.16 working in Singapore, a man came in and he said, 00:21:09.17\00:21:12.28 well you know doc he said, I have had 00:21:12.44\00:21:15.70 diarrhea now and I've had this for about a 00:21:15.71\00:21:17.98 month. So, I asked him about his history and 00:21:18.05\00:21:20.39 he says well a month ago, I was having a 00:21:20.40\00:21:22.66 problem of the constipation. So I went to 00:21:22.82\00:21:24.36 see another physician and he give me some 00:21:24.47\00:21:27.98 medicine and since then I've had diarrhea. 00:21:28.01\00:21:30.25 So, I examined the patient and did a rectal 00:21:30.83\00:21:33.53 examination, felt what I could thing feel was 00:21:33.60\00:21:35.85 like a little mass and so I send him for 00:21:35.93\00:21:38.29 further tests and he had a cancer growing in 00:21:38.36\00:21:40.90 his rectum. So, again change in bowel or bladder 00:21:40.98\00:21:46.05 habits you need to find out why because 00:21:46.16\00:21:48.15 they shouldn't change in persistent like 00:21:48.30\00:21:51.02 that, that's a important sign. 00:21:51.15\00:21:52.61 Well, lets just repeat those for the folks and 00:21:52.90\00:21:55.04 then we gonna on maybe talk about how we 00:21:55.20\00:21:57.48 can prevent even getting it. You mentioned 00:21:57.51\00:22:00.65 no if you have a cough or hoarseness, 00:22:00.70\00:22:03.74 if you have unusual or sudden weight loss, 00:22:04.66\00:22:06.46 right. Blood present in the stool, 00:22:06.74\00:22:08.74 obvious change in the mole, change in bowel 00:22:09.12\00:22:12.15 or bladder habits, a soar that doesn't heal, 00:22:12.16\00:22:15.42 a thickening of a lump in the breast or else 00:22:17.36\00:22:19.65 where and unusual indigestion. Those were 00:22:19.69\00:22:24.57 the elements that we talked about. 00:22:24.61\00:22:26.36 And unusual bleeding or discharge 00:22:26.47\00:22:28.25 from any part of the body, right. 00:22:28.42\00:22:30.10 So, if any of those things are happening you 00:22:30.11\00:22:31.96 need to get checked out ASAP really? Right. 00:22:31.97\00:22:35.13 Lets go on next and talk about how we can 00:22:36.20\00:22:38.63 reduce the risk of ever developing this. 00:22:38.78\00:22:41.55 Well the exciting thing is you can eat right to help 00:22:42.27\00:22:47.81 you lower your risk, because many times many 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.34 of diseases that we have are related to what 00:22:50.36\00:22:52.51 we eat. So, if it's eating the wrong types of 00:22:52.64\00:22:55.81 food that got us into the problem or increased 00:22:55.85\00:22:57.90 our risk. If we can eat the right types of foods 00:22:57.91\00:23:00.49 that will certainly decrease our risk. 00:23:00.50\00:23:02.36 So, what are types of food we should eat? 00:23:02.42\00:23:04.25 Well, we wanna eat less fat, especially animal 00:23:04.45\00:23:09.45 fat. So, we're willing to go to a Plant based 00:23:09.56\00:23:12.59 diet that's really gonna go a long way 00:23:12.63\00:23:14.46 towards helping lower our fat intake. 00:23:14.50\00:23:16.51 Going towards the plant based diet is also 00:23:17.05\00:23:19.16 going to increase our fiber intake and this is 00:23:19.18\00:23:21.75 good. The other thing is that there are many 00:23:21.94\00:23:24.89 things that are found in fruits and vegetables 00:23:24.98\00:23:28.68 that seem to be protective. And if we're 00:23:28.74\00:23:31.76 not on a total plant based diet, far too 00:23:31.91\00:23:34.21 often we find that the average American with 00:23:34.31\00:23:37.28 their meat and potatoes diet. Or the diet that 00:23:37.29\00:23:40.60 includes fast foods and other things, doesn't get 00:23:40.77\00:23:42.94 enough fruits and vegetables. You know they 00:23:43.05\00:23:46.01 recommend that between 5 and 9 servings 00:23:46.07\00:23:49.36 of fruits and vegetables everyday. 00:23:49.37\00:23:51.49 And if I'm eating fried chicken and hamburgers 00:23:51.89\00:23:55.25 and roast prime ribs and pork chops and things 00:23:55.27\00:23:58.16 like this, I'm just not gonna get enough fruits 00:23:58.20\00:24:00.29 and vegetables. Because fruits and vegetables 00:24:00.40\00:24:02.30 decrease our risk for many different cancers 00:24:02.44\00:24:04.85 like breast cancer, prostate cancer, 00:24:04.92\00:24:07.22 colon cancer, and they're very protective in 00:24:07.51\00:24:11.04 this sense because there are things that are 00:24:11.21\00:24:13.15 found in the fruits and vegetables that lower 00:24:13.23\00:24:15.32 our risk for them. We call these substances 00:24:15.35\00:24:18.11 phytochemicals, that's something that is 00:24:18.69\00:24:22.10 applies to these protective elements that 00:24:22.13\00:24:24.25 are found in these types of foods. 00:24:24.34\00:24:25.97 So, we can actually protect ourselves 00:24:28.33\00:24:30.18 from developing, any other things 00:24:30.21\00:24:31.76 that we wanna avoid to. 00:24:31.80\00:24:33.73 Well something else that I think is important 00:24:34.12\00:24:35.72 to avoid in lowering your risk for cancers 00:24:35.80\00:24:37.87 I believe think you should avoid alcohol at total 00:24:38.23\00:24:40.65 length completely, that's something that's not 00:24:40.74\00:24:42.87 healthful. And another thing that you should 00:24:42.95\00:24:45.00 avoid completely and totally I think is tobacco 00:24:45.07\00:24:49.40 or nicotine in any form, that's something else 00:24:49.42\00:24:51.58 that's better left out of our lifestyle, 00:24:51.69\00:24:54.06 because there's a large group of cancers that 00:24:54.30\00:24:58.15 are related to the lung and the respiratory 00:24:58.19\00:25:01.65 trap that are in the mouth that are related 00:25:02.19\00:25:04.76 to tobacco. People may not smoke, 00:25:04.81\00:25:06.97 but those who chew tobacco increase their 00:25:07.07\00:25:09.22 risk for oral cancer, cancers of the mouth 00:25:09.30\00:25:12.00 and the tongue. So, if we can avoid those 00:25:12.03\00:25:14.41 things by avoiding tobacco, alcohol and low 00:25:14.50\00:25:19.95 eating a plant based diet we can probably 00:25:20.08\00:25:22.08 lower our risk for almost all cancers by 70 00:25:22.11\00:25:26.10 to 80 percent and that is really good news. 00:25:26.18\00:25:29.65 Can we help people that already have cancer? 00:25:29.85\00:25:31.80 Yes we can, if the people have cancer even 00:25:32.50\00:25:35.71 by going to a plant based diet we're gonna help 00:25:35.72\00:25:38.63 them lower their risk of recurrence of the cancer 00:25:38.64\00:25:41.20 assuming they get rid of the cancer when 00:25:41.27\00:25:44.47 they first had it. And hopefully help to, 00:25:44.52\00:25:47.72 if there is cancer left, hopeful them to avoid 00:25:47.89\00:25:50.94 the cancer growing larger and you know 00:25:51.86\00:25:55.35 reoccurring. So, again I still thank that going 00:25:55.41\00:25:59.48 to a totally plant based diet, lower fat diet, 00:25:59.55\00:26:02.03 increasing the activity level, exercise is another 00:26:02.39\00:26:04.88 important facet of helping to lower the risk 00:26:04.92\00:26:08.11 for cancer because people who exercise 00:26:08.13\00:26:10.84 regularly not only have lower blood pressures, 00:26:10.97\00:26:14.67 lower blood sugars, lower risk for heart disease, 00:26:14.76\00:26:17.29 but they have lower death rates in cancer 00:26:17.34\00:26:19.17 and all diseases. So, again it's very 00:26:19.19\00:26:22.35 interesting, one of the studies that was done, 00:26:22.40\00:26:25.05 showed the increased of the activity of the NK 00:26:25.88\00:26:27.76 cells by 40 percent, the NK cells are the ones 00:26:27.96\00:26:31.55 that go out and destroy the 00:26:31.66\00:26:32.63 cancer cells and this is very helpful. 00:26:32.69\00:26:34.84 So, the exercise increases that? 00:26:34.92\00:26:36.60 Activity of the NK cells which lowers their risk 00:26:37.30\00:26:39.45 for cancer. Should we eat cabbage? 00:26:39.57\00:26:41.16 Cabbage is great, broccoli is great, cauliflower. 00:26:41.88\00:26:44.51 You know your cabbage family vegetables, 00:26:44.88\00:26:46.69 your cruciferous vegetables are good. 00:26:46.79\00:26:48.62 And those that are rich in, your orange 00:26:49.02\00:26:51.92 and yellow pigments like your yams and sweet 00:26:52.03\00:26:55.10 potatoes, peaches, papayas, cantaloupe, 00:26:55.29\00:26:59.33 things like this, tomatoes these 00:26:59.41\00:27:00.94 are all good for you. 00:27:01.08\00:27:02.09 We've been talking Dr. Clarence Ing from Weimar, 00:27:03.27\00:27:07.21 California. Where he works in a cancer 00:27:07.34\00:27:10.01 prevention program and also reversal of, 00:27:10.09\00:27:13.51 if you have problems along that line. 00:27:13.66\00:27:16.20 What you've shared with us today doctor has 00:27:16.62\00:27:18.10 been most helpful and I hope that as we've 00:27:18.20\00:27:22.11 listened we can make decisions that will lead 00:27:22.20\00:27:25.62 to health not just for a day, but health for 00:27:25.69\00:27:29.08 a lifetime. Thank you for joining us 00:27:29.09\00:27:31.35 and have a great week. 00:27:31.56\00:27:32.53
