Hello and welcome to Health for a Lifetime. 00:00:49.75\00:00:53.21 I'm Don Maclntosh, and we hope that as a result of today's 00:00:53.24\00:00:57.06 program you will have health for a lifetime. 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.15 Today I'm joined with a guest from Weimar whose name is 00:00:59.18\00:01:03.17 Jack Maclntosh and he teaches anatomy and physiology 00:01:03.20\00:01:07.46 he's raising a family, he's really helping people that are 00:01:07.49\00:01:11.66 attempting to overcome cancer. 00:01:11.69\00:01:13.50 They have an immune enhancement program there that's getting 00:01:13.53\00:01:16.03 national acclaim and a weight loss program there that's 00:01:16.06\00:01:19.46 number 2 in the nation at this time. 00:01:19.49\00:01:21.62 Welcome, Jack and today we're going to talk about a very 00:01:21.65\00:01:25.22 interesting subject - one that you've dealt with a lot - 00:01:25.25\00:01:27.62 that's changing our habits. 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.06 Is it possible to change our habits? 00:01:29.09\00:01:31.31 - Yes, people do it all the time but they have varying degrees 00:01:31.34\00:01:36.13 of success. 00:01:36.16\00:01:37.24 What we're going to talk about today, however; is how to have 00:01:37.27\00:01:40.82 unusual success. 00:01:40.85\00:01:42.83 I believe that God wants us to have victory 00:01:42.86\00:01:48.13 and unusual success. 00:01:48.16\00:01:50.50 I believe that He wants us to be the head and not the tail. 00:01:50.53\00:01:53.56 He wants us to show others how to achieve victory. 00:01:53.59\00:01:57.33 Jesus said seven times in the book of Revelation, "He that 00:01:57.36\00:02:01.47 overcomes," and He makes a promise each time. 00:02:01.50\00:02:04.61 The last time He says, "He who overcomes I will grant to sit 00:02:04.64\00:02:08.45 with Me in My throne even as I overcame and sat down with My 00:02:08.48\00:02:13.77 Father in His throne. " 00:02:13.80\00:02:15.29 So because that is something that God is very interested in - 00:02:15.32\00:02:20.19 that is the whole business of overcoming - and He said that 00:02:20.22\00:02:24.36 to the last church, the 7th church, this is the generation 00:02:24.39\00:02:29.27 that He's talking to. 00:02:29.30\00:02:30.63 Then it becomes very important for us to understand what He 00:02:30.66\00:02:35.63 meant by "just as I overcame and have sat down with My Father 00:02:35.66\00:02:39.56 on His throne. " 00:02:39.59\00:02:40.56 So we're going to look at what it means to be successful in 00:02:40.57\00:02:44.30 actually changing our health habits. 00:02:44.33\00:02:46.67 - Before we get to the actual how-to of that, 00:02:46.70\00:02:50.69 we've made several assumptions already in this discussion 00:02:50.72\00:02:53.49 and that is: going beyond science and research and all 00:02:53.52\00:02:57.31 the different numbers and everything else, there is a 00:02:57.34\00:02:59.63 source of power, there's a higher power of God and Jesus 00:02:59.66\00:03:04.56 who we need to turn to. 00:03:04.59\00:03:05.56 Is that getting increasing acceptance among those who deal 00:03:05.57\00:03:10.80 with cancer and these types of things? 00:03:10.83\00:03:12.83 - I think it is. 00:03:12.86\00:03:14.03 I can remember probably a year ago or more, I was talking to a 00:03:14.06\00:03:19.93 medical director for an HMO and I was telling them about some of 00:03:19.96\00:03:24.17 the programs that we have at Weimar Institute like the 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.44 New Start Program and some of the wonderful clinical results 00:03:26.47\00:03:29.71 that we are achieving and the fact that we're a program that 00:03:29.74\00:03:36.03 looks at man in a 3 dimensional sense - body, mind, and spirit. 00:03:36.06\00:03:41.02 Just in passing she said to me, "You know I really like your 00:03:41.05\00:03:45.97 program, I like the way that your program operates. " 00:03:46.00\00:03:50.63 I didn't think much of it, but a couple minutes later, 00:03:50.66\00:03:53.83 the Lord said, "Ask her about that, what do you mean, 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.09 what is it that you like?" 00:03:56.12\00:03:57.32 She said, "Well, I like the spiritual dimension. " 00:03:57.35\00:03:59.90 She said, "You know the research is showing very clearly 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.07 that people who are prayed for, people who don't discount the 00:04:03.10\00:04:09.26 spiritual side of their nature but actually take it into 00:04:09.29\00:04:12.16 account and embrace it and actually seek the wisdom of the 00:04:12.19\00:04:19.78 Creator and His help in the whole healing process - 00:04:19.81\00:04:22.89 they do better - the research 00:04:22.92\00:04:24.64 shows definitely they do better. " 00:04:24.67\00:04:26.29 It's come into its own. 00:04:26.33\00:04:28.83 - So we don't need to say we're sorry for the fact that this is 00:04:28.86\00:04:33.44 actually a resource. 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.48 How do we go about changing our habits? 00:04:34.51\00:04:38.02 - I think it's important to take inventory. 00:04:38.05\00:04:42.56 The apostle Paul says, "Examine yourselves to 00:04:42.59\00:04:46.13 see if you're in the truth. " 00:04:46.16\00:04:47.43 We need to take inventory of where we are. 00:04:47.46\00:04:52.59 What kinds of habits and what kinds of practices do we indulge 00:04:52.62\00:05:00.04 in that we really feel convicted that we should change? 00:05:00.07\00:05:04.51 We need to ask God to show us is there something 00:05:04.54\00:05:09.25 that we need to change. 00:05:09.28\00:05:11.45 I think that question is a very, very important question 00:05:11.48\00:05:14.49 to spiritual people. 00:05:14.52\00:05:15.60 - Actually, just asking the question, "What's wrong 00:05:15.63\00:05:18.94 between me and you or me and someone else, 00:05:18.97\00:05:22.18 or something I'm doing," or just writing down those impressions? 00:05:22.21\00:05:26.37 Maybe identifying it in that way - is that what you mean? 00:05:26.40\00:05:29.89 - Yes, that's correct. 00:05:29.92\00:05:31.93 For instance, most of us, especially at this time 00:05:31.96\00:05:38.03 of the year, have some inkling that it's important to make 00:05:38.06\00:05:43.51 some changes physically, to have some exercise, 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.81 to study the Bible more, things like that. 00:05:46.84\00:05:52.02 We have these aspirations, but how to do it really eludes a lot 00:05:52.05\00:05:56.78 of people. 00:05:56.81\00:05:57.85 They want to change their diets, for instance, they want to make 00:05:57.88\00:06:02.49 a dietary changes, that's a particularly tough one because 00:06:02.52\00:06:06.09 we know that temptation was first brought to human beings 00:06:06.12\00:06:09.85 on this point of appetite. 00:06:09.88\00:06:11.18 And so it's a fairly difficult one to overcome. 00:06:11.21\00:06:14.12 But I believe that as we look at the resources that we have 00:06:14.15\00:06:18.60 and the things that we want to change, I believe that God can 00:06:18.63\00:06:22.44 help us to make sense out of it all and to overcome. 00:06:22.47\00:06:25.56 One of things that we have to do is we have to say to God, 00:06:25.59\00:06:29.89 "All right, I have this habit. What do You want me 00:06:29.92\00:06:33.07 to substitute in its place?" 00:06:33.10\00:06:35.06 - So it's not enough to just say, "What's wrong?" 00:06:35.09\00:06:37.27 You have to go to the next step and say, "What's right?" 00:06:37.30\00:06:41.62 - Yes, that's the great principle of substitution. 00:06:41.65\00:06:45.62 But even before we get to the principle of substitution 00:06:45.65\00:06:49.56 it's important to look at some of the resources 00:06:49.59\00:06:52.97 that God has given us. 00:06:53.00\00:06:55.17 For instance, notice in II Peter 1:3 00:06:55.20\00:06:58.91 It says the following: "His divine power has given us 00:06:58.94\00:07:03.83 everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge 00:07:03.86\00:07:08.92 of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. " 00:07:08.95\00:07:13.24 Now when you look at that text you recognize that there are 00:07:13.27\00:07:17.66 two things that are happening there. 00:07:17.69\00:07:19.05 First of all, He's given us everything we need for life. 00:07:19.08\00:07:22.23 That means the practical side of things - our physical life. 00:07:22.26\00:07:26.20 Then He's given us everything we need for godliness. 00:07:26.23\00:07:29.79 So that covers our dual and I dare say our triple nature, 00:07:29.82\00:07:37.66 if you will - body, mind and spirit. 00:07:37.69\00:07:39.97 We have everything we need for life and godliness 00:07:40.00\00:07:42.15 through our knowledge of God. 00:07:42.18\00:07:43.88 - So it's not something we have to look for? 00:07:43.91\00:07:45.99 II Peter 1:3 seems to indicate that everything we have 00:07:46.02\00:07:52.19 to make these changes or need to make changes 00:07:52.22\00:07:54.88 is already there somewhere. 00:07:54.91\00:07:56.42 It's been provided by God, it's just a matter of having Him 00:07:56.46\00:08:01.93 access that for us. 00:08:01.96\00:08:02.93 - Access the resources, not the least of which, 00:08:02.94\00:08:04.03 in terms of these resources, are 10 billion brain cells 00:08:04.06\00:08:09.20 located between your ears. 00:08:09.23\00:08:11.87 Now, people take this 3 pound mass between our ears 00:08:11.91\00:08:17.24 for granted and we tend to glorify computers, and 00:08:17.28\00:08:22.54 we tend to glorify some of the science but we need to keep in 00:08:22.58\00:08:26.34 mind that all of this science, all of this knowledge that we 00:08:26.37\00:08:30.10 have amassed came from the people who were using the 00:08:30.13\00:08:33.42 resources between their ears. 00:08:33.45\00:08:35.53 And it's a phenomenal resource. 00:08:35.56\00:08:37.57 I just want to touch on a couple of things here that I think 00:08:37.60\00:08:42.50 you will find impressive. 00:08:42.54\00:08:43.99 First of all, a brain cell - brain cells in general - 00:08:44.03\00:08:48.55 the paths we use for solving and analyzing problems, 00:08:48.59\00:08:52.68 they can perform more math calculations than the world's 00:08:52.71\00:08:56.76 largest computers. 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.42 In fact we know that a single brain cell - just one- 00:08:58.46\00:09:03.16 can analyze positive and negative information impulses 00:09:03.20\00:09:07.87 that it has received from a thousand other cells! 00:09:07.91\00:09:10.95 And it makes a decision based on input from those thousand other 00:09:10.99\00:09:15.42 cells in a split second - in a thousandth of a second - 00:09:15.46\00:09:19.38 it makes a decision to fire. 00:09:19.41\00:09:21.15 - So each one of our 10 billion cells does that? 00:09:21.18\00:09:23.75 - Has the ability to make decisions and to suppress 00:09:23.79\00:09:29.21 behavior or to embrace behavior. 00:09:29.24\00:09:32.75 So we are talking about resources that are 00:09:32.79\00:09:35.10 absolutely phenomenal. 00:09:35.13\00:09:36.49 I'm not just talking about spiritual resources, I'm talking 00:09:36.52\00:09:40.22 about physical resources that God has given to us. 00:09:40.25\00:09:42.93 - We know some habits in our lives actually damage or kill 00:09:42.97\00:09:46.33 our brain cells, is it right to say, "We have 10 billion 00:09:46.36\00:09:54.76 of them, we've only messed up maybe 5 million of them 00:09:54.79\00:10:01.00 so there's hope because there's so many more?" 00:10:01.03\00:10:03.64 - Yes, and you know in 1984, that was sort of a 00:10:03.67\00:10:08.32 watershed year for brain research, because in that year 00:10:08.36\00:10:13.77 researchers actually showed that brain cells can regenerate. 00:10:13.80\00:10:18.68 Prior to that the assumption was that once you loose them they're 00:10:18.72\00:10:23.61 gone and they can never regenerate. 00:10:23.65\00:10:25.42 But that year they discovered that brain cells can in fact 00:10:25.46\00:10:30.03 regenerate and do that very well. 00:10:30.06\00:10:32.12 I read fascinating book recently by Dr. Eldon Chalmers who 00:10:32.16\00:10:36.64 has been here on 3ABN in the past. 00:10:36.67\00:10:39.28 He has a book out called, Healing the Broken Mind. 00:10:39.31\00:10:43.08 He points out some of the phenomenal turn around 00:10:43.11\00:10:46.80 that people have been able to achieve just by understanding 00:10:46.84\00:10:51.00 the resources that they have between their ears. 00:10:51.04\00:10:53.20 It's quite phenomenal. 00:10:53.23\00:10:55.77 - And even if those are messed up or broken they can - what? 00:10:55.81\00:11:00.94 Be reworked? 00:11:00.98\00:11:02.15 - We can be regenerated. 00:11:02.18\00:11:04.01 And the interesting thing, Don, is that this principle has 00:11:04.05\00:11:08.58 been in the Bible all along. 00:11:08.61\00:11:10.30 Somehow the research scientists or all the people that are 00:11:10.34\00:11:14.74 involved in that kind of thing didn't see it. 00:11:14.78\00:11:17.13 Spiritual people have understood it, however. 00:11:17.16\00:11:19.44 Romans 12:2 says it very well, "Do not conform any longer 00:11:19.48\00:11:25.58 to the pattern of this world. " 00:11:25.61\00:11:27.20 Think of what we're surrounded by, Don. 00:11:27.24\00:11:29.81 Every corner practically has a McDonald's and a Burger King. 00:11:29.84\00:11:34.21 You can go into one of those "alters" and make a "sacrifice" 00:11:34.25\00:11:38.59 to the "god of appetite" at one of those "alters. " 00:11:38.62\00:11:43.02 We're surrounded by these influences and yet the Bible 00:11:43.05\00:11:47.10 through the apostle Paul, long ago to the Romans his 00:11:47.14\00:11:51.11 letter, called on us, notice it says, "Be transformed by the 00:11:51.15\00:11:57.12 renewing of your mind. " 00:11:57.15\00:12:00.03 "Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is. 00:12:00.06\00:12:03.92 His good, pleasing, and perfect will. " 00:12:03.95\00:12:05.96 That's the principle of renewal. 00:12:06.00\00:12:07.71 One of my favorite authors says it this way, 00:12:07.75\00:12:11.10 "When we talk to God about changing our habits 00:12:11.14\00:12:14.42 we must ask Him for new desires, new purposes, and new motives. " 00:12:14.46\00:12:21.15 - This is part of the renewal process. 00:12:21.18\00:12:23.11 - Exactly. 00:12:23.14\00:12:24.11 - Desiring something, actually wanting, say broccoli instead of 00:12:24.12\00:12:29.76 whatever else. 00:12:29.79\00:12:31.61 - Yes, and now you're talking about 00:12:31.65\00:12:33.53 the great principle of substitution. 00:12:33.57\00:12:35.34 Because in that same chapter of Romans 12 the apostle Paul says 00:12:35.38\00:12:40.95 something very important. 00:12:40.98\00:12:42.51 He says do not be overcome by evil 00:12:42.54\00:12:45.97 but overcome evil with good. 00:12:46.01\00:12:49.40 That's the great principle of substitution that if you want 00:12:49.43\00:12:53.34 to knock something bad out of your life, don't just get in 00:12:53.37\00:12:57.47 there struggle with it and fight with it and end up a loser. 00:12:57.50\00:13:01.56 You have to put something positive in its place. 00:13:01.60\00:13:05.03 This is probably the most important thing I will say 00:13:05.07\00:13:08.32 on this program about changing health habits. 00:13:08.35\00:13:11.21 You must substitute something positive 00:13:11.24\00:13:13.75 in the place of something negative. 00:13:13.78\00:13:16.22 - So a mother shouldn't just say, "No, no, no. " 00:13:16.25\00:13:19.30 The mother should say, "Not this, but that. " 00:13:19.33\00:13:22.34 - "Let's try this," - Exactly. 00:13:22.38\00:13:24.35 That principle of substitution is so important that I believe 00:13:24.38\00:13:31.22 that it really holds the key to victory. 00:13:31.25\00:13:35.34 Going a little further on, II Peter 1:4 says the following, 00:13:35.38\00:13:45.16 "Through these He has given us His very 00:13:45.20\00:13:47.91 great and precious promise. " 00:13:47.95\00:13:49.57 Now we're talking about second line of resources, His promises. 00:13:49.60\00:13:53.42 Notice - "that through them you might participate in the 00:13:53.46\00:13:58.12 divine nature" - the King James says, 00:13:58.16\00:14:00.33 "PARTAKE of the divine nature and escape the corruption 00:14:00.36\00:14:04.73 in the world caused by evil desires. " 00:14:04.76\00:14:07.49 - So we can actually have a transplant this sounds like 00:14:07.53\00:14:10.75 of not our desires, attitudes, or wants, but the divine desire. 00:14:10.79\00:14:17.97 - The divine nature we can actually have a... yes, 00:14:18.01\00:14:22.24 that's a great word - a transplant. 00:14:22.27\00:14:24.43 There's a transfer of the nature of God to man. 00:14:24.46\00:14:28.18 Notice that it comes as a result of the promises. 00:14:28.22\00:14:31.69 Well, the question is what promises has God made? 00:14:31.73\00:14:35.13 God said, "A new heart also will I give you. " 00:14:35.17\00:14:38.54 Remember when we talked about 00:14:38.58\00:14:39.55 new desires, new purposes, new motives? 00:14:39.56\00:14:42.51 That promise takes in that whole business of having new desires 00:14:42.55\00:14:49.72 new thoughts and new motives. 00:14:49.76\00:14:51.69 "A new heart also will I give you, a new spirit will I put 00:14:51.73\00:14:55.02 within you. " 00:14:55.06\00:14:56.03 These are things that we can actually substitute for thoughts 00:14:56.04\00:14:59.93 that are moving in a certain direction. 00:14:59.96\00:15:02.11 What we have discovered, even among alcoholics 00:15:02.14\00:15:04.78 we see this phenomenon. 00:15:04.81\00:15:06.26 They have a little expression among alcoholics called 00:15:06.30\00:15:10.30 "stinking thinking. " 00:15:10.34\00:15:12.21 The way that it works is, they find that they're dwelling on 00:15:12.25\00:15:17.84 the thoughts of taking a drink - "stinking thinking. " 00:15:17.88\00:15:21.20 That really is a bad thought, it basically stinks 00:15:21.24\00:15:26.49 and it leads them in a direction of evil. 00:15:26.53\00:15:30.33 - Of the behavior they don't want. 00:15:30.37\00:15:32.23 - The principle of substitution at that point when those 00:15:32.26\00:15:35.72 thoughts come is - to substitute the scriptures. 00:15:35.75\00:15:39.70 I've used Romans 6:14 a great deal when I 00:15:39.74\00:15:42.76 want to get rid of thoughts. 00:15:42.80\00:15:43.79 I'm driving down the freeway, and you know as I've said, 00:15:43.82\00:15:47.21 we're surrounded by these influences. 00:15:47.24\00:15:49.11 There's a billboard and all of a sudden thoughts are 00:15:49.14\00:15:52.34 going through your mind. 00:15:52.37\00:15:53.54 I don't want that to be there. 00:15:53.57\00:15:55.29 - And what does Romans 6:14 say? 00:15:55.32\00:15:57.40 - It says, "For sin shall not have dominion over you 00:15:57.43\00:16:00.75 for you are not under law but under grace. " 00:16:00.79\00:16:02.33 In other words you're not under condemnation of the law but 00:16:02.36\00:16:06.54 grace will free you from this dominion, this power of sin. 00:16:06.57\00:16:09.93 - So you've just memorized that and you come back to that. 00:16:09.97\00:16:13.19 - I just start repeating that, and I want to tell you this is 00:16:13.23\00:16:16.42 the most effective thing that I have done, I have found 00:16:16.46\00:16:19.90 the principle of substitution to substitute scriptural thoughts 00:16:19.93\00:16:24.60 for the evil thought that I want to banish from the mind. 00:16:24.63\00:16:29.54 - I want to come back to that when we get back from the break. 00:16:29.57\00:16:33.90 We've been talking with Jack Maclntosh. 00:16:33.93\00:16:35.99 He's a health educator from Weimar Institute in California. 00:16:36.02\00:16:39.82 We've been talking about habits. 00:16:39.86\00:16:41.66 What to do to identify good ones or bad ones. 00:16:41.70\00:16:46.01 How to replace bad ones with good ones. 00:16:46.05\00:16:47.93 When we come back we're going to talk more practically about 00:16:47.96\00:16:51.12 the nuts and bolts of having God change our habits. 00:16:51.15\00:16:55.28 I hope you join us. 00:16:55.32\00:16:57.46 Have you found yourself wishing you could shed a few pounds? 00:17:00.53\00:17:03.40 Have you been on a diet for most of your life? 00:17:03.44\00:17:06.16 But not found anything that will keep weight off? 00:17:06.20\00:17:08.85 If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then we have 00:17:08.88\00:17:12.46 a solution for you that works. 00:17:12.50\00:17:14.38 Dr. Hans Diehl and Dr. Aileen Ludington 00:17:14.41\00:17:17.00 have written a marvelous booklet called, 00:17:17.04\00:17:19.56 Reversing Obesity Naturally, and we'd like to send it to you 00:17:19.59\00:17:23.17 free of charge. 00:17:23.21\00:17:24.36 Here's a medically sound approach successfully used 00:17:24.39\00:17:27.38 by thousands who are able to eat more and loose weight 00:17:27.41\00:17:30.36 permanently without feeling guilty or hungry 00:17:30.40\00:17:33.25 through lifestyle medicine. 00:17:33.28\00:17:35.04 Dr. Diehl and Dr. Ludington have been featured on 3ABN 00:17:35.08\00:17:38.32 and in this booklet they present a sensible approach to 00:17:38.36\00:17:41.62 eating, nutrition, and lifestyle changes that can help you 00:17:41.66\00:17:44.89 prevent heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. 00:17:44.92\00:17:47.87 Call or write today for your free copy: 00:17:47.90\00:17:50.14 Welcome back. We've been talking with 00:18:02.87\00:18:04.70 Jack Maclntosh from Weimar Institute about a very 00:18:04.74\00:18:07.45 important subject, that is the subject of changing our habits. 00:18:07.49\00:18:11.79 What are the things we are doing right? 00:18:11.82\00:18:13.86 What are the things we're doing wrong? 00:18:13.90\00:18:15.87 How do we discover how to change bad habits into good habits. 00:18:15.90\00:18:20.08 We've talked about some real spiritual resources 00:18:20.12\00:18:24.07 in this last few moments. 00:18:24.11\00:18:26.35 Now we're back and we're going to look a little further 00:18:26.38\00:18:30.54 Is it enough just to know the promises and resources we 00:18:30.57\00:18:34.72 have, is that where it ends? 00:18:34.75\00:18:36.05 - Well, actually the Bible is very plain about God's ability 00:18:36.09\00:18:42.20 to, not only give us resources, but to keep us from falling into 00:18:42.23\00:18:48.31 the pit we were in before. 00:18:48.34\00:18:50.26 That very specific promise is found in the book of Jude 1:24. 00:18:50.29\00:18:59.22 It says, "Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling 00:18:59.25\00:19:08.14 and to present you before His glorious presence" - 00:19:08.18\00:19:11.90 notice - "without fault and with great joy to Him be glory. " 00:19:11.94\00:19:18.13 These promises of God are designed 00:19:18.17\00:19:21.94 to keep us out of trouble. 00:19:21.97\00:19:24.45 One of the ways that I believe God keeps us out of trouble is 00:19:24.48\00:19:28.03 this whole business of presence of mind. 00:19:28.06\00:19:31.29 You know, we use the term "New Testament" and "Old Testament" 00:19:31.32\00:19:35.82 very, very freely, but in reality what we're talking about 00:19:35.85\00:19:40.32 is a "new covenant" and an "old covenant. " 00:19:40.35\00:19:43.55 In the new covenant we find the first mention 00:19:43.58\00:19:46.71 of the new covenant in the book of Jeremiah the 31st chapter. 00:19:46.74\00:19:50.09 We also find that covenant exactly reproduced 00:19:50.13\00:19:54.79 in Hebrews 8 and 10 of the New Testament. 00:19:54.82\00:19:59.45 So it's not something that was confined to the Old Testament 00:19:59.49\00:20:03.92 and stayed there. 00:20:03.96\00:20:04.93 It has been transferred to the New Testament. 00:20:04.94\00:20:07.31 In fact when Jesus raised the cup He said, "This cup 00:20:07.34\00:20:12.01 is the new covenant in My blood. " 00:20:12.05\00:20:15.44 He made a connection between His blood and the new covenant 00:20:15.47\00:20:18.28 which means that His blood actually put that covenant 00:20:18.32\00:20:20.61 into effect. 00:20:20.64\00:20:21.70 That covenant is the most important promise that God 00:20:21.73\00:20:27.90 ever made to human beings. 00:20:27.94\00:20:29.46 Because that is the promise of redemption. 00:20:29.50\00:20:31.93 Here's what He said, "I will put My laws in your mind 00:20:31.96\00:20:37.74 and write them on your heart. " 00:20:37.77\00:20:39.78 - So He does it? 00:20:39.82\00:20:41.47 - Yes, exactly. 00:20:41.51\00:20:43.09 God takes responsibility for that, you see. 00:20:43.12\00:20:45.85 Before if you read in the old covenant, man was supposed to 00:20:45.89\00:20:49.77 hide the word of God in his heart 00:20:49.80\00:20:51.33 and all those kinds of things. 00:20:51.37\00:20:52.87 Man had a responsibility. 00:20:52.90\00:20:54.53 In the new covenant God takes responsibility for 00:20:54.56\00:20:59.44 putting the law in our minds and writing it in our hearts. 00:20:59.48\00:21:03.18 Now I spent a lot of time thinking about what it means 00:21:03.21\00:21:06.88 to have God's law in your mind. 00:21:06.91\00:21:08.84 If you say to someone, "You know, I have that in mind," 00:21:08.87\00:21:14.25 what does that mean? 00:21:14.29\00:21:15.42 - You were thinking about it. 00:21:15.45\00:21:17.02 - Yes, it's on the front burner, right? 00:21:17.05\00:21:19.01 It's not somewhere back there that you're unaware of it. 00:21:19.05\00:21:21.56 It's on the front burner, you're aware of it. 00:21:21.60\00:21:23.92 It's what I like to call, God's promise for presence of mind. 00:21:23.96\00:21:28.78 In other words, when you run into trouble and you need help 00:21:28.81\00:21:33.69 you will have the presence of mind to fight the battle the way 00:21:33.72\00:21:38.56 Jesus fought. 00:21:38.60\00:21:39.57 And of course we know that Jesus used the scriptures. 00:21:39.58\00:21:41.35 It's very plain. 00:21:41.39\00:21:42.90 The first victory that Jesus won in behalf of man in Matthew 4 00:21:42.93\00:21:46.86 we find the record. 00:21:46.89\00:21:47.86 It says, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word 00:21:47.87\00:21:51.29 that proceeds out of the mouth of God. " 00:21:51.33\00:21:53.69 And prior to saying that He said, "It is written. " 00:21:53.72\00:21:58.57 So what He was doing in essence was using God's word to vanish 00:21:58.61\00:22:04.82 the temptation to do evil. 00:22:04.86\00:22:07.72 That's a very, very powerful thing. 00:22:07.76\00:22:10.19 - So His rapid access memory, to use a computer term, 00:22:10.22\00:22:15.36 that short-term memory, it was just there at His finger tips 00:22:15.40\00:22:18.45 and when He was in need of it, it was right there. 00:22:18.49\00:22:23.04 - The Spirit brought to His mind the scriptures that He needed. 00:22:23.07\00:22:27.10 Jesus promised that we're not to rehearse what we're going to say 00:22:27.14\00:22:31.14 The Spirit would bring to us what we should say. 00:22:31.18\00:22:33.15 - Or keep us, like you say, from falling. 00:22:33.19\00:22:36.33 - But keeping us from falling is dependant 00:22:36.36\00:22:39.44 on the presence of mind that comes through the new covenant 00:22:39.47\00:22:43.13 promise - that's the point I'm trying to make. 00:22:43.17\00:22:45.03 And it's not just presence of mind, it's that the heart is 00:22:45.06\00:22:49.07 changed and renewed. 00:22:49.11\00:22:50.21 The law of God, the law of love, Jesus said all the law and 00:22:50.25\00:22:53.25 prophets hangs on these two commandments - love for God and 00:22:53.28\00:22:56.25 love for man. 00:22:56.28\00:22:57.25 That law, the Ten Commandments are of course an expression 00:22:57.26\00:23:01.00 of that law. 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.01 That law is written in the heart and placed in the mind. 00:23:02.02\00:23:05.87 So that we have presence of mind. 00:23:05.91\00:23:09.19 - It will be like walking around physical embodied 00:23:09.22\00:23:14.87 ten commandments, if you will? 00:23:14.91\00:23:16.76 - Yes, and again there is a transfer of righteousness. 00:23:16.79\00:23:20.53 There's a transfer of divine nature into man's 00:23:20.57\00:23:24.75 heart and mind. 00:23:24.79\00:23:26.44 And of course as we progress and we look at, for instance, 00:23:26.47\00:23:32.80 the whole business of grace, you know churches today talk about 00:23:32.83\00:23:40.14 grace and grace, grace, grace. 00:23:40.18\00:23:41.99 Do you realize that most of the grace, so called grace that we 00:23:42.02\00:23:46.58 see out there today, is really a grace that isn't practical. 00:23:46.61\00:23:51.14 It's a kind of forensic grace. 00:23:51.17\00:23:53.74 It's a grace that says that Jesus has done something 00:23:53.78\00:23:57.26 for me - He's substituted His life for me. 00:23:57.29\00:23:59.95 But it really doesn't take hold of the victories that Jesus has 00:23:59.99\00:24:04.18 won in my behalf. 00:24:04.21\00:24:06.11 - So it just makes us feel good but it doesn't help us be good. 00:24:06.14\00:24:11.60 - Exactly. 00:24:11.63\00:24:12.60 There isn't a practical side to this grace. 00:24:12.61\00:24:16.21 But you see God never intended that His grace should be only 00:24:16.24\00:24:19.39 forensic - a legal declaration of your righteousness. 00:24:19.43\00:24:23.10 He intended that it should be practical. 00:24:23.14\00:24:25.37 And no where else in the Bible is this whole business of 00:24:25.40\00:24:29.04 practical righteousness, through grace, more evident 00:24:29.08\00:24:32.68 than in the book of Titus. 00:24:32.71\00:24:33.97 And I want to share with you something that has become 00:24:34.00\00:24:37.32 very, very precious to me as I have tried to help people 00:24:37.36\00:24:40.64 to find these resources to overcome. 00:24:40.68\00:24:43.85 In Titus 2:11-12, notice - "For the grace of God that 00:24:43.89\00:24:52.37 brings salvation has appeared to all men. " 00:24:52.41\00:24:56.13 You know when you think about that, everything that people do 00:24:56.17\00:25:00.84 in this world that is right, and righteous, it comes from 00:25:00.88\00:25:05.52 the grace of God. 00:25:05.55\00:25:06.52 Do you see that? It has appeared to all men. 00:25:06.53\00:25:09.83 Now it goes on to say, "It teaches us to say no 00:25:09.87\00:25:13.30 to ungodliness and worldly passion and to live 00:25:13.34\00:25:16.70 self-controlled, upright, and godly lives when Jesus comes. " 00:25:16.74\00:25:22.49 Now it says in THIS PRESENT AGE. 00:25:22.53\00:25:26.11 That's the whole point of practical grace. 00:25:26.14\00:25:29.21 It's supposed to give you power to overcome right now. 00:25:29.25\00:25:32.39 - So Nancy Reagan wasn't the first one to say this. 00:25:32.42\00:25:34.89 She was not the first one to think of this whole business of 00:25:34.92\00:25:37.63 "Just say no. " 00:25:37.66\00:25:38.87 The Bible said this is a 2,000 year old concept. 00:25:38.90\00:25:43.54 It says, "The grace of God teaches us to say no to 00:25:43.57\00:25:47.30 ungodliness," notice "worldly passion, and to live 00:25:47.33\00:25:51.28 self-controlled, upright, and godly lives 00:25:51.31\00:25:55.01 in this present age.
