10/29/20071:56:32 PM 00:00:05.00\00:00:06.00 Hello, welcome to Health for a Lifetime, I'm Don Mclntosh 00:00:50.08\00:00:55.34 today our special guest will be Doctor Neal Nedly. 00:00:55.77\00:00:59.79 He's from Ardmore, Oklahoma where he is a practicing 00:00:59.93\00:01:02.78 physician with a specialty in internal medicine. 00:01:02.81\00:01:06.26 He also focuses on helping people with heart disease 00:01:06.29\00:01:11.36 and with other ailments 00:01:11.59\00:01:12.70 but he likes more than that to prevent diseases. 00:01:12.73\00:01:16.32 Our subject will be the consideration of the number two 00:01:16.37\00:01:21.42 cause of death in America, second only to heart disease. 00:01:21.68\00:01:26.75 It claims the life of one in four individuals, 00:01:26.82\00:01:29.25 and if the trend continues, according to a book recently 00:01:29.28\00:01:33.74 authored by our guest, it will be number one 00:01:33.77\00:01:36.14 by the year 2000. 00:01:36.18\00:01:39.17 What is that disease? ... Cancer. 00:01:39.20\00:01:42.30 A disease who's very name strikes fear in the hearts 00:01:42.33\00:01:45.89 of those who heart it. But today,... 00:01:45.92\00:01:46.89 we don't want to talk about the fearful aspects of cancer. 00:01:46.92\00:01:50.60 We want to talk about good news about cancer. 00:01:50.63\00:01:55.03 And, there is good news about cancer isn't there, 00:01:55.06\00:01:56.43 Doctor Nedley? 00:01:56.46\00:01:57.43 Maybe we should start out with just what exactly is cancer? 00:01:58.25\00:02:02.97 What do we do that causes it? What can we do to avoid it? 00:02:03.41\00:02:07.80 Well, cancer is a frightening disease as you mentioned. 00:02:07.83\00:02:12.44 It really strikes fear into the heart of every person 00:02:12.47\00:02:16.46 that I have had the unfortunate opportunity of telling them 00:02:16.49\00:02:22.19 that the biopsy is back and they have cancer. 00:02:22.22\00:02:24.38 It goes through a disfigurement many times and often ends 00:02:24.41\00:02:29.20 in painful death. It doesn't necessarily have to be that way. 00:02:29.23\00:02:31.30 We are curing more cancers now than we ever have before. 00:02:31.33\00:02:35.88 But, what many Americans are totally unfamiliar with 00:02:35.91\00:02:39.41 is that this disease can be prevented. 00:02:39.44\00:02:42.52 It really should not be the one or two cause of death. 00:02:42.55\00:02:45.30 It should be way down the list as far as the cause of death 00:02:45.33\00:02:48.66 in America. If Americans were on an ideal lifestyle program, 00:02:48.69\00:02:53.15 they really would not be developing cancer at these rates 00:02:53.18\00:02:57.98 Well, someone's sitting there, "Well, look, I hear what you're 00:02:58.01\00:03:02.15 saying, and I know there is good news, but give me some proof. " 00:03:02.18\00:03:04.98 I like the title of your book, "Proof Positive. " 00:03:05.01\00:03:09.73 I think today you are going to share some proof with us. 00:03:09.76\00:03:13.22 Proof that can maybe change what we do day-to-day, 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.66 and proof also that can give us some hope. 00:03:16.69\00:03:19.25 Yes, really, and as far as preventing cancer is concerned, 00:03:19.28\00:03:22.40 first of all, we need to look at the causes of cancer death, 00:03:22.43\00:03:26.49 which is our first figure, and how it's dramatically increasing 00:03:26.52\00:03:31.03 Hmm, well of course then the next natural question is what 00:04:06.30\00:04:11.51 kind of warning can you have to avoid this 00:04:11.54\00:04:15.58 seeming eventuality for the American? 00:04:15.61\00:04:17.78 Well, first of all it is important if you have cancer 00:04:17.81\00:04:21.51 to detect it early. 00:04:21.54\00:04:24.10 And thus we broadcast what the seven cancer warning signs are 00:04:24.13\00:04:28.07 as far as symptoms that if you would develop cancer 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.85 you would know when to have it checked out. 00:04:30.88\00:04:34.64 Change in bowl or bladder habits - that could mean constipation 00:04:43.53\00:04:46.41 that lasts for more than a few days or diarrhea that lasts more 00:04:46.44\00:04:49.53 than a few days - it really needs to be checked out. 00:04:49.56\00:04:50.93 The number two cause of cancer death in the US is colon cancer. 00:04:50.96\00:04:55.20 Now, the only cancer symptom that most people are aware 00:05:22.95\00:05:26.37 of is one that is not an early cancer warning symptom 00:05:26.40\00:05:31.93 and that is weight loss. Weight loss actually occurs 00:05:31.96\00:05:35.33 after cancer has spread to vital organs. 00:05:35.36\00:05:37.84 Unfortunately by that time it is often too late. 00:05:37.87\00:05:40.74 So it is important that individuals check 00:05:40.77\00:05:44.09 with a physician when they have a symptom that persists more 00:05:44.12\00:05:46.93 than a few days. Most times they are not going to be cancer, 00:05:46.96\00:05:49.55 but there may be cancer lurking there and if it is caught early 00:05:49.58\00:05:52.56 enough we have a much greater chance of cure. 00:05:52.59\00:05:55.87 One of the things on that list that I wanted to ask about... 00:05:55.90\00:05:59.08 Often times we hear about breast cancer in America and we 00:05:59.11\00:06:02.88 usually hear about that in association with women. 00:06:02.91\00:06:06.33 What about men? Do they have to worry about breast cancer? 00:06:06.36\00:06:09.85 Is that something they need to check for? 00:06:09.88\00:06:11.87 One in one hundred cases of breast cancer in this country 00:06:11.90\00:06:14.92 are in men. It wouldn't be harmful for men to 00:06:14.95\00:06:19.48 actually check their own breasts It is usually obese men, 00:06:19.51\00:06:22.31 the ones that have larger breasts, that run into this 00:06:22.34\00:06:26.87 problem. It is not just a problem with women. 00:06:26.90\00:06:30.04 Are there types of lifestyle things; habits that we have 00:06:30.07\00:06:35.82 that maybe we should avoid when it comes to considering cancer? 00:06:35.85\00:06:41.27 Yes, there are several lifestyle factors that we need 00:06:41.30\00:06:44.76 to focus in on. When we are dealing with lifestyle factors. 00:06:44.79\00:06:47.67 I like to lump them into one of two categories. 00:06:47.70\00:06:50.85 One is avoiding carcinogens and secondly is actually boosting 00:06:50.88\00:06:56.11 the immune system so if cancer does develop it can be destroyed 00:06:56.14\00:06:59.76 in early stage. So today, we are going to be discussing the 00:06:59.79\00:07:04.07 carcinogen aspect of cancer. And that is to decrease the 00:07:04.10\00:07:09.85 level of carcinogen consumption in America. This can go a 00:07:09.88\00:07:11.66 long way in America in preventing a host of cancers. 00:07:11.92\00:07:13.60 So when you say "carcinogen" that means something that 00:07:13.63\00:07:18.38 causes cancer - a substance that we ingest or come into 00:07:18.41\00:07:23.01 contact with that can actually lead to cancer. What would 00:07:23.04\00:07:26.19 some of those substances be? 00:07:26.22\00:07:27.19 Well, the number one carcinogen in America is tobacco. 00:07:27.20\00:07:31.53 Our next graphic deals with that subject... 00:07:31.57\00:07:33.85 Most people are aware that lung cancer comes about from tobacco 00:07:33.88\00:07:37.74 usage, but notice that all of the other cancers that come 00:07:37.77\00:07:41.73 about from tobacco usage: 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.45 Even colon cancer come about is a result of tobacco in the 00:07:50.85\00:07:55.59 system, either chewing it or smoking it. 00:07:55.62\00:07:57.26 And many people are unaware that these type of 00:07:57.29\00:08:02.27 cancers caused by tobacco tend to be the most incurable 00:08:02.31\00:08:07.39 of cancers, often it is death within six months to a year 00:08:07.42\00:08:12.47 after one of these tobacco related tumors is diagnosed, 00:08:12.50\00:08:16.43 even with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, there are 00:08:16.47\00:08:20.39 of course exceptions, but tobacco related cancers, 00:08:20.43\00:08:24.20 if we would just get rid of the carcinogen tobacco, 30 percent 00:08:24.23\00:08:27.43 of cancer deaths would be eliminated in this country. 00:08:28.01\00:08:32.43 That is hundreds of thousands of cancer deaths. 00:08:32.46\00:08:35.02 Of course, that's something that I think is common knowledge now. 00:08:35.05\00:08:40.87 But, a hundred years ago it was physicians that were saying, 00:08:40.90\00:08:44.93 "Hey, we should smoke. We should do these different 00:08:44.96\00:08:47.52 things for our lungs. " But, I think maybe a good point as well 00:08:47.55\00:08:51.17 is to emphasize that it is not just smoking that 00:08:51.47\00:08:54.14 you are talking about, is it? 00:08:54.17\00:08:56.41 No, it's chewing tobacco. It's really tobacco in any form. 00:08:56.69\00:08:58.92 There are some chewing tobacco related cancers that have a 00:08:59.14\00:09:03.97 greater chance. Mouth and lip and throat cancers are greater 00:09:04.10\00:09:09.43 in those that chew tobacco. But those that smoke tobacco 00:09:09.91\00:09:11.43 have a greater lung, kidney, and liver cancer risk. 00:09:11.46\00:09:15.11 Your risk changes depending on which form you are using. 00:09:15.14\00:09:18.62 But really, it's better to get rid of nicotine and tobacco 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.02 related products all together. 00:09:22.05\00:09:26.15 Are there any other lifestyle related things that are 00:09:26.18\00:09:31.40 prevalent in America that we should avoid? 00:09:31.43\00:09:33.57 The number two carcinogen in America, really, is alcohol. 00:09:33.60\00:09:37.59 Many people actually think that alcohol is something that is 00:09:37.62\00:09:42.01 life giving and will actually prolong the life, and it is true 00:09:42.04\00:09:46.03 that if you drink alcoholic beverages you may decrease your 00:09:46.06\00:09:50.20 risk of heart disease slightly, but you dramatically increase 00:09:50.23\00:09:54.65 your risk of cancer and other diseases. In fact, if you drink 00:09:54.68\00:09:57.55 enough of alcohol to get cirrhosis of the liver you only 00:09:57.58\00:10:01.11 have 25 percent chance of dying of heart disease compared to a 00:10:01.14\00:10:03.94 person in the general population Obviously cirrhosis of the 00:10:03.97\00:10:07.72 liver is a fatal condition and one that we need to avoid. 00:10:07.75\00:10:11.34 Alcohol increases the risk of a number of cancers as our 00:10:11.37\00:10:15.37 next graphic illustrates. 00:10:15.40\00:10:17.90 There are some cancers that are related to just small 00:10:36.41\00:10:37.94 amounts of alcohol consumption. Many women are unaware 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.17 that one alcoholic drink every fifteen days increases 00:10:41.45\00:10:43.93 their risk of getting breast cancer by 60 percent! 00:10:44.17\00:10:47.19 Just moderate alcoholic usage increases the risk of 00:10:47.22\00:10:51.75 colon cancer by almost double - both colon and rectal cancer. 00:10:52.14\00:10:55.47 Alcohol is a substance that is the third leading cause of 00:10:56.05\00:10:59.24 death in America. Alcohol by itself is the underlying cause 00:10:59.27\00:11:02.68 of death. This is a substance that needs to be avoided. 00:11:02.71\00:11:05.33 The World Health Association recommends and that we 00:11:05.36\00:11:09.37 completely avoid any alcohol use whatsoever. 00:11:09.40\00:11:13.35 Thousands upon thousands of cancer deaths 00:11:13.38\00:11:16.28 would be saved by doing this. 00:11:16.31\00:11:19.63 I was talking to a physician not long ago who said to me a kind 00:11:19.66\00:11:23.62 of catchy phrase, "We like to hear good news about 00:11:23.65\00:11:27.80 our bad habits. " Many times what we hear about alcohol is... 00:11:27.83\00:11:31.28 "Hey, you know, it's going to help you with heart disease," 00:11:32.12\00:11:34.56 and it is going to do all these different things. But really the 00:11:34.59\00:11:38.95 bottom line depends on how you site these studies. 00:11:38.98\00:11:43.84 If we are really living a healthful life for our lifetime 00:11:43.87\00:11:46.40 there are certain things that we need to abstain from. 00:11:46.43\00:11:50.90 We can't get around it. You know a moderate smoker - a smoker 00:11:50.93\00:11:56.14 that I ran across the other day as I was giving a presentation 00:11:56.17\00:12:00.13 was saying, "Well, I'm just a social smoker so it's not really 00:12:00.16\00:12:03.39 going to bother me, is it?" And, of course, the statistics 00:12:03.42\00:12:06.07 show that even social smokers have a dramatic increase risk 00:12:06.10\00:12:09.59 of certain cancers and certain types of heart disease although 00:12:09.62\00:12:13.42 not as much as those who smoke regularly and routinely. 00:12:13.45\00:12:17.37 So we just have to come to grips with the fact that in 00:12:17.40\00:12:21.74 order to live life at its fullest there are some 00:12:21.77\00:12:24.75 things we need to abstain from. 00:12:24.78\00:12:27.70 So, there are good foods, there are bad foods, there are good 00:12:27.73\00:12:31.27 substances, there are bad substances. 00:12:31.30\00:12:34.27 No matter what people are telling us. 00:12:34.30\00:12:37.44 Let's talk a little bit more. I was interested as I read your 00:12:37.47\00:12:41.42 book - by the way that book that Dr. Nedly has recently 00:12:41.45\00:12:45.62 authored, "Proof Positive," is just a super market of facts. It 00:12:45.65\00:12:50.70 just has all kinds of facts, but the thing that I like about it 00:12:51.71\00:12:55.07 is that each one has a footnote and being somewhat skeptical of 00:12:55.33\00:12:59.87 physicians... no... Nothing against you personally, I like 00:12:59.90\00:13:03.82 to check out the facts because a lot of the physicians I've 00:13:03.85\00:13:08.15 seen do some of the very things that you've mentioned. 00:13:08.18\00:13:11.15 And the thing that you are going to mention next, I believe, and 00:13:11.18\00:13:14.34 that graphic really impressed me. It's one of the reasons 00:13:14.37\00:13:17.43 we're talking about it. It was something to do with coffee. 00:13:17.46\00:13:20.50 Tell us a little bit about that. 00:13:20.53\00:13:21.50 Coffee, because it has caffeine in it is a carcinogen. 00:13:21.53\00:13:26.74 Caffeine is actually a co-carcinogen meaning that... 00:13:26.77\00:13:30.13 if there are other carcinogens around in the environment it can 00:13:30.16\00:13:33.78 enhance those carcinogens to cause cancer. This has been 00:13:33.81\00:13:38.01 proven in the laboratory, proven also in a number of 00:13:38.04\00:13:42.05 different what we call epidemiological studies where 00:13:42.08\00:13:45.09 we are studying large groups of people. One study was done 00:13:45.12\00:13:47.98 on a group of people taking a look at how much coffee they 00:13:48.01\00:13:51.74 consumed. Those that drank two cups of coffee or more a day 00:13:51.77\00:13:56.02 had twice the risk of bladder cancer compared with those who 00:13:56.05\00:14:00.61 did not use coffee at all. 00:14:00.64\00:14:02.94 How does that happen? 00:14:02.97\00:14:04.69 Caffeine is eliminated through the urinary tract, so it has a 00:14:05.68\00:14:09.14 chance to concentrate in the bladder before the 00:14:09.66\00:14:13.36 bladder is emptied and cause damage to the bladder wall. 00:14:13.86\00:14:17.06 I know physicians actually who have come down with bladder 00:14:17.75\00:14:21.47 cancer and their only risk factor was the consumption 00:14:22.00\00:14:25.91 of caffeine. Bladder cancer is one of those diseases that if it 00:14:26.30\00:14:28.79 is not caught early enough, it's very very deadly. 00:14:30.33\00:14:32.06 You say coffee, but then you say really the culprit is caffeine. 00:14:32.42\00:14:38.33 What about decaf then? 00:14:38.36\00:14:41.43 Decaf doesn't have the caffeine or very much caffeine. 00:14:41.46\00:14:45.04 It will have about one percent of what coffee has. 00:14:45.07\00:14:49.04 But, it has tannins in it that injure the stomach lining. 00:14:49.07\00:14:52.42 I recommend staying away from decaf as well. 00:14:52.45\00:14:55.18 In my field of gastroenterology I deal with many people having 00:14:55.21\00:14:57.83 gastritis - inflammation of the stomach- and that inflammation 00:14:57.86\00:15:00.66 can be caused by caffeine beverages or decaf beverages and 00:15:00.69\00:15:04.26 so it is better to eliminate both. 00:15:04.29\00:15:06.91 Hmmm, Well, I imagine that there are quite a few people 00:15:06.94\00:15:12.25 watching today saying, "Doctor, I've never heard things like 00:15:12.28\00:15:16.59 this before, I live for my cup of coffee on the way, I mean 00:15:16.62\00:15:20.84 I drink and I have a big mug that's thick on the bottom 00:15:20.87\00:15:24.42 and I have comfort from that. " 00:15:24.45\00:15:27.63 What could they put in place of that? 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.08 Well, there are other drinks. The best beverage is water. 00:15:30.11\00:15:34.09 All the rest are really water substitutes. 00:15:34.12\00:15:37.35 Fruit juices would be an example of something they could replace 00:15:37.38\00:15:42.49 it with and herbal teas that don't have the caffeine in them. 00:15:42.52\00:15:45.95 There is a drink on the market today called Roma that is made 00:15:45.98\00:15:50.38 out of barley that some people say is very similar to coffee. 00:15:50.41\00:15:55.07 So there are other ways they can go about it. Really, the best 00:15:55.10\00:15:59.09 way is by drinking water between meals. 00:15:59.12\00:16:04.08 Well, we've talked about warning signs of cancer, we've talked 00:16:04.11\00:16:08.13 about tobacco, we've talked about alcohol and coffee. 00:16:09.30\00:16:14.23 Ummm, is there anything else you want to take away, Doctor? 00:16:14.26\00:16:17.84 Well, there are some other important carcinogens that we 00:16:17.87\00:16:22.28 need to go through. We would be derelict not to mention 00:16:22.31\00:16:26.19 other carcinogens, one being benzopyrene. Benzopyrene is 00:16:26.22\00:16:30.74 produced by charcoal broiling steak. 00:16:31.78\00:16:34.61 Benzopyrene can cause leukemia, and cancer of the stomach. 00:16:44.35\00:16:47.81 It is a potent carcinogen and really needs to be avoided, Don. 00:16:48.40\00:16:51.72 Wow. Now, I know that some of the cynics out there are 00:16:53.00\00:16:56.14 cigarette smokers saying maybe I can save money by 00:16:56.17\00:16:59.22 just eating a steak instead of buying that many cigarettes. 00:16:59.25\00:17:01.56 But, that's not going to help us at all. You talk about steaks 00:17:01.59\00:17:06.98 and what not. Is there anything else? Any other substances 00:17:07.01\00:17:10.40 such as the fat in steaks, does that contribute to cancer? 00:17:10.43\00:17:14.12 Yes, a high fat diet does contribute to cancer. 00:17:14.15\00:17:17.97 And Americans really are on quite a high fat fare. About 00:17:18.00\00:17:21.65 thirty five, forty percent of the diet that they consume 00:17:21.68\00:17:25.47 every day is fat. That is really too much fat. Lowering the 00:17:25.50\00:17:30.22 percentage fat down to twenty to twenty five percent 00:17:30.25\00:17:33.99 would decrease skin cancer, would decrease colon cancer, 00:17:34.02\00:17:38.41 decrease prostate cancer, and decrease breast cancer. 00:17:38.44\00:17:41.48 There is quite a relationship between fat intake 00:17:41.51\00:17:43.99 and breast cancer. 00:17:44.02\00:17:46.45 Why is that? Are things stored in fat that are dangerous to 00:17:46.48\00:17:51.88 us or what happens? 00:17:52.22\00:17:54.34 That's a very good question. Is it the fat or what is coming 00:17:54.58\00:17:56.59 with the fat that's the problem? Actually, there is evidence 00:17:56.62\00:18:01.68 that it is some of both. There are certain substances in fat 00:18:02.32\00:18:06.96 that when it is used in excess the body metabolizes it 00:18:07.19\00:18:10.94 and produces what we call free radicals which then can 00:18:10.97\00:18:14.27 cause damage to the gene of a cell which can then cause 00:18:14.30\00:18:17.26 it to go awry and have cancer come about. But, in the same 00:18:17.29\00:18:21.61 token, the fat of animals particularly is more 00:18:21.64\00:18:22.88 dangerous because there are much more dangerous substances in the 00:18:22.91\00:18:25.60 animals' fat. Pesticides for instance, there is a well known 00:18:25.63\00:18:30.13 study showing that the pesticide content of animal foods 00:18:30.17\00:18:34.02 particularly concentrate in the fat of animals and is much 00:18:34.05\00:18:37.49 higher than you will get from fruits and vegetables that are 00:18:37.53\00:18:41.82 laden with organic chemicals. So, if we want to get on the 00:18:41.86\00:18:45.99 lowest pesticide diet we are going to chose a diet that does 00:18:46.03\00:18:50.13 not have the animal products in it. 00:18:50.16\00:18:51.73 So much for the industries desire to make us afraid of 00:18:51.76\00:18:58.15 fruits and vegetables and stick with animal products. 00:18:58.18\00:19:02.38 Does meat cause any other problems in cancer risk? 00:19:02.41\00:19:07.56 Yes, there are a number of cancers that are increased 00:19:07.59\00:19:10.70 by meat. One study done out of Harvard University showed a 00:19:10.73\00:19:14.03 direct relationship between meat consumption and colon cancer 00:19:14.06\00:19:17.55 and that's what our next graphic is about: 00:19:17.58\00:19:20.21 What we found out, as the study's author Doctor Willit 00:19:56.36\00:19:59.29 pointed out is that there is no safe level of meat 00:19:59.32\00:20:03.64 consumption as far as colon cancer is concerned. 00:20:03.67\00:20:05.98 The less consumed the better and the best would be a 00:20:06.14\00:20:09.68 vegetarian diet where there is no meat in the diet. 00:20:09.71\00:20:14.44 So less really is more, as they say. Let me just ask one 00:20:14.47\00:20:25.75 more question for clarification, is fish considered meat? 00:20:25.78\00:20:29.31 Fish is classified as meat. In fact, the pesticide content of 00:20:29.34\00:20:34.35 fish is higher than any other animal product. One of the 00:20:34.38\00:20:37.85 reasons we may see a decrease in the rate of heart disease 00:20:37.88\00:20:41.31 in this country is that people are consuming more fish. But 00:20:41.34\00:20:43.97 we are getting more incidents of cancer because the 00:20:44.00\00:20:46.58 pesticide intake is increasing. So really a fish, particularly, 00:20:46.61\00:20:51.36 would need to be avoided because of the carcinogen 00:20:51.39\00:20:54.42 potential of some of the things that are coming with the fat. 00:20:54.45\00:20:58.10 Well, folks, you have been hearing some impressive things 00:20:58.13\00:21:02.15 today and some things that you might want to check out. 00:21:02.18\00:21:05.34 I just want to mention again the book that Doctor Nedly 00:21:05.37\00:21:08.78 has just recently authored, "Proof Positive. " It has all 00:21:08.81\00:21:12.17 the nitty gritty details. And, something as I was preparing 00:21:12.20\00:21:16.00 for today, I was thankful for all the different references 00:21:16.03\00:21:20.72 whereby you could look into things. Maybe you could 00:21:20.75\00:21:24.76 help us a little bit. I think what has been most helpful for 00:21:24.79\00:21:28.10 me is finding out these substances that cause cancer 00:21:28.13\00:21:31.09 so I can avoid them. Maybe you could summarize 00:21:31.12\00:21:36.12 some of those things for us. 00:21:36.15\00:21:38.02 Okay. Let's go the next graphic and look at a list of cancer 00:21:38.05\00:21:40.56 causing agents. 00:21:40.59\00:21:42.47 Tobacco is the number one carcinogen. 00:22:20.83\00:22:24.14 Meat increases chances of colon, ovary, prostate, pancreas, 00:22:24.17\00:22:26.62 and breast cancers. 00:22:26.65\00:22:28.77 Dairy products are high in saturated fats. 00:22:38.44\00:22:41.64 Saturated fats actually produce much more cancer than the 00:22:41.67\00:22:45.26 poly unsaturated fats in fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. 00:22:45.29\00:22:48.92 Which do you think is more likely to come down with cancer, 00:22:48.95\00:22:53.15 deadly melanoma skin cancer, the construction worker that works 00:22:53.18\00:22:56.96 outside everyday or the executive that works inside? 00:22:56.99\00:23:01.28 I'm going to say the man that works indoors. 00:23:01.31\00:23:06.53 The man that works indoors does come down with more 00:23:06.56\00:23:11.38 deadly skin cancer than the one that works outside. 00:23:11.41\00:23:15.15 The only way I knew that was because it sounded wrong. 00:23:15.18\00:23:18.83 What is the reason for that? It is something called weekends. 00:23:18.86\00:23:22.78 That is, the executive goes outside and gets sunburned. 00:23:22.81\00:23:27.48 Unfortunately it is the sunburn that brings out the melanoma and 00:23:27.51\00:23:35.86 deadly types of skin cancers. Sunlight in moderation is a 00:23:35.89\00:23:38.84 healthy thing. In fact, we will get into the other good news 00:23:38.88\00:23:40.03 about cancer and that includes boosting the immune system. 00:23:40.06\00:23:42.54 Sunlight boosts the immune system. In fact it saves more 00:23:42.57\00:23:47.24 cancers than what is causes. But, sunshine in excess needs 00:23:47.27\00:23:49.93 to be avoided. 00:23:49.96\00:23:50.93 Then if we go back to our graphic in regards to the 00:23:50.96\00:23:52.56 other cancer causing agents: Coffee as we mentioned in 00:23:52.59\00:23:57.41 caffeine beverages, Viruses, the HIV virus, 00:23:57.44\00:24:01.27 AIDS virus, hepatitis viruses these viruses can indeed 00:24:01.30\00:24:06.90 cause cancer, and a number of other leukemia viruses are 00:24:06.93\00:24:10.30 lining cancers of the lung. 00:24:13.47\00:24:15.44 Wood dust is excess can cause sinus cancers. 00:24:15.47\00:24:19.27 Excess sugar is linked with a whole host of cancers. 00:24:25.06\00:24:29.41 Genital powder and sprays increase ovarian cancer. 00:24:32.70\00:24:37.78 Many people get discouraged at this point in the presentation, 00:24:43.36\00:24:47.00 Don, because they think, "All those carcinogens out here. How 00:24:47.03\00:24:52.41 in the world can we be avoiding all these carcinogens?" 00:24:52.44\00:24:53.41 We really cannot completely avoid all carcinogens 00:24:53.44\00:24:59.32 throughout life. I might go down a city street and breathe in 00:24:59.35\00:25:03.12 some passive cigarette smoke. Passive cigarette smoke is 00:25:03.15\00:25:06.29 actually a carcinogen. That has been proven. 00:25:06.32\00:25:09.52 Those that breathe in tobacco smoke passively, not actively 00:25:09.55\00:25:12.79 smoking it increase their chance of cancer. So, it tends to get 00:25:12.82\00:25:16.48 pretty discouraging. But the good news is that the fewer 00:25:16.51\00:25:20.66 carcinogens we consume, the smaller our risk of cancer. 00:25:20.69\00:25:23.86 We can boost our immune system to dramatically improve our odds 00:25:23.89\00:25:28.57 as well. In other words, if I do breathe in this passive 00:25:28.60\00:25:32.37 cigarette smoke and my immune system is in tip top shape it 00:25:32.40\00:25:36.28 will be able to destroy a cancer cell before it ever has a chance 00:25:36.31\00:25:39.33 to develop and grow. That's really a whole other aspect of 00:25:39.36\00:25:42.38 this discussion of cancer prevention - and that is 00:25:42.41\00:25:45.34 boosting the immune system. It's that two prong approach - 00:25:45.37\00:25:48.67 avoiding carcinogens and boosting the immune system - 00:25:48.70\00:25:52.10 that are going to produce dramatic results as far as 00:25:52.13\00:25:55.53 dramatically decreasing cancer in this country. 00:25:55.56\00:25:59.07 Maybe another way to say that is that the best defense is an 00:25:59.10\00:26:02.37 offense. Worry about the offense. There are some things 00:26:02.40\00:26:05.70 you can't do about defending yourself against many of these 00:26:05.73\00:26:09.36 different things. There are many things you can do. Avoid 00:26:09.39\00:26:12.28 many of the things that you have mentioned today and start to 00:26:12.31\00:26:16.35 move in that direction as soon as possible - would maybe be 00:26:16.38\00:26:19.87 practical ways to look at that. I just want to mention again 00:26:19.90\00:26:24.17 to our viewers that we have been talking with Doctor Neal Nedly 00:26:24.20\00:26:27.83 from Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is a specialist in internal medicine 00:26:27.86\00:26:32.59 and is really interested in preventing the common killers 00:26:32.62\00:26:37.59 today. We have been talking about cancer. I want to 00:26:37.62\00:26:40.33 encourage you to get in touch with 3ABN concerning his book 00:26:40.36\00:26:45.69 "Proof Positive". And, that chapter that deals with cancer 00:26:45.72\00:26:51.66 has all the footnotes from today. I think you will really 00:26:51.69\00:26:55.43 enjoy reading it. It's an enjoyable book to read and 00:26:55.46\00:26:58.79 it's also very informative. Someone has said that the way 00:26:58.82\00:27:03.01 you live will largely determine the way that you die. We found 00:27:03.04\00:27:08.78 that is certainly true today. Doctor Neal, thank you for 00:27:08.81\00:27:11.78 sharing such practical, positive and proven ways to help us avoid 00:27:11.81\00:27:17.00 the common killers. And thank you for joining us today on 00:27:17.03\00:27:21.49 Health for a Lifetime. We look forward to seeing you next 00:27:21.52\00:27:25.88 time when we move from defense to offense. 00:27:25.91\00:27:31.78
