I got a question from Janelle. 00:02:37.02\00:02:39.05 All right. 00:02:39.09\00:02:40.42 And she writes here that her husband 00:02:40.46\00:02:42.69 and her are confused about Genesis 1. 00:02:42.72\00:02:45.19 Okay. 00:02:45.23\00:02:46.56 It's speaking about creation stating that the evening 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.33 and the morning was the first day 00:02:49.36\00:02:50.90 and the second day and the third day and so on. 00:02:50.93\00:02:53.80 Could you please explain the evening 00:02:53.84\00:02:56.27 and morning as a day 00:02:56.30\00:02:58.11 and not being evening to evening? 00:02:58.14\00:03:00.68 So a good question and I think 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.84 there's a fairly simple answer to this. 00:03:02.88\00:03:06.38 Moses who wrote the Book of Genesis, 00:03:06.41\00:03:09.88 obviously wrote as a Hebrew and very much understood 00:03:09.92\00:03:16.16 the culture of the Hebrews and from a very early on, 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.33 a time early on where Jesus called them as His people, 00:03:19.36\00:03:22.56 He gave them a clarity 00:03:22.60\00:03:25.93 as to what encompassed each day. 00:03:25.97\00:03:29.57 And contrary to what we practice here 00:03:29.60\00:03:32.81 in our modern society, 00:03:32.84\00:03:34.54 modern culture is that the day started 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.58 when the sun went down, not when the sun came up. 00:03:38.61\00:03:42.88 Our emphasis here is when the sun comes up, 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.69 the day gets started, but not so much back then. 00:03:44.72\00:03:48.66 The Hebrews saw the day starting 00:03:48.69\00:03:50.33 when the sun went down 00:03:50.36\00:03:52.09 and it entered into the evening hours, 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.73 and so what Moses is simply saying here 00:03:54.76\00:03:57.63 is that the day that begins in the evening 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.67 and ends during the day was the period of time 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.30 that creation occurred. 00:04:03.34\00:04:04.67 That's right. 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.04 So he's simply using terminology 00:04:06.07\00:04:07.41 that it was in their own understanding, 00:04:07.44\00:04:09.71 their culture, what they were familiar, 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.35 very familiar with practicing. 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.22 To us it sounds a little strange, 00:04:14.25\00:04:15.95 but to them it made a lot of sense. 00:04:15.98\00:04:17.95 Very simple, in a nutshell he's simply saying 00:04:17.99\00:04:20.49 that the evening and the morning 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.86 are a part of the day. 00:04:22.89\00:04:25.13 The reason why he started with the evening 00:04:25.16\00:04:26.70 is because when the Lord began creation in Genesis 1, 00:04:26.73\00:04:29.86 the Bible says, darkness moved on the... 00:04:29.90\00:04:33.77 the earth is without form and void and darkness, 00:04:33.80\00:04:35.97 there was darkness first, so the day always begins 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.41 at the dark part. 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.68 When the day ends it goes back into the dark part, 00:04:42.71\00:04:45.31 but the day is made up of the evening and the morning. 00:04:45.35\00:04:49.02 You know, John, I thought it was interesting 00:04:49.05\00:04:50.39 that when we get to midnight a lot of people think, 00:04:50.42\00:04:52.52 okay, it's 12:01, it's now Tuesday, 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.66 you know, first minute into Tuesday 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.53 or 12 o'clock and one second, 00:04:57.56\00:05:00.93 they think is one second into the next day, 00:05:00.96\00:05:03.26 but it's called midnight for a reason, 00:05:03.30\00:05:06.23 because the night has already begun 00:05:06.27\00:05:07.80 when the sunset 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.40 and that's why you hear the meteorologist say 00:05:09.44\00:05:11.24 sunset tonight is or sunrise tomorrow morning, 00:05:11.27\00:05:14.01 and then we get to noon lunchtime as we would say, 00:05:14.04\00:05:17.65 we say mid day, so the day already started 00:05:17.68\00:05:21.25 and the night already started 00:05:21.28\00:05:22.85 and the Bible's reckoning is clear. 00:05:22.88\00:05:25.15 But another question we have here. 00:05:25.19\00:05:28.16 Lincoln from Belize, I've been to Belize, 00:05:28.19\00:05:32.03 love that country, 00:05:32.06\00:05:33.40 it's beautiful not too far off shore 00:05:33.43\00:05:36.56 and Belize is a set of coral reef 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.83 that's almost like the reef out in Australia, 00:05:38.87\00:05:41.37 beautiful, people go to Belize 00:05:41.40\00:05:42.74 for diving and clear, clear waters. 00:05:42.77\00:05:45.31 I didn't get a chance to go, 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.84 but thank you for sending the question. 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.08 I didn't get a chance to go to the reef that is, 00:05:49.11\00:05:51.15 but the question is, 00:05:51.18\00:05:52.51 "Why is the Sabbath so important?" 00:05:52.55\00:05:55.55 Well, let's go first of all to Exodus 20, 00:05:55.58\00:05:59.55 I'll show you the reason why it is important. 00:05:59.59\00:06:02.19 Will begin in Exodus 20 and matter of fact 00:06:02.22\00:06:06.76 in my Bible I could turn there quicker, 00:06:06.80\00:06:08.36 we have these digital Bibles nowadays, 00:06:08.40\00:06:10.70 they are lot of fun but you know 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.43 when you could rightly divide the word of truth 00:06:12.47\00:06:13.90 by turning there, it sure does make it a lot easier. 00:06:13.94\00:06:16.77 Exodus 20 and we're going to look together at first verse 8 00:06:16.81\00:06:22.54 and then verse, portions of verse 10. 00:06:22.58\00:06:26.82 We're gonna read 8, 9 and 10. 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.28 Now first of all... 00:06:28.32\00:06:29.65 The context here are the Ten Commandments. 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.02 The context is, 00:06:31.05\00:06:32.39 are the Ten Commandments, exactly. 00:06:32.42\00:06:33.76 Ten Commandments, not ten suggestions, 00:06:33.79\00:06:36.89 not nine commandments and one suggestion, 00:06:36.93\00:06:39.66 because oftentimes the Ten Commandments 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.40 are handled as though they are nine commandments 00:06:41.43\00:06:44.27 and one suggestion, but the one suggestion 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.84 that people often forget 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.37 "suggestion they make it seem that way 00:06:48.40\00:06:52.07 but there are Ten Commandments, none of those are suggestions." 00:06:52.11\00:06:57.91 Verse 8 of Exodus 20, the reason why it is important 00:06:57.95\00:07:01.95 is because it begins with the word remember, remember. 00:07:01.98\00:07:06.15 When God says, "Remember," it's a serious injunction. 00:07:06.19\00:07:10.33 You know, we have a couple of remembers in the Bible, 00:07:10.36\00:07:13.06 one is remember Lot's wife. 00:07:13.09\00:07:16.46 Remember Lot's wife, what's the lesson there John? 00:07:16.50\00:07:18.73 What was the lesson? What did she do? 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.64 Yeah, I suppose she turned back 00:07:20.67\00:07:22.10 looking at the world that she left behind 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.04 and turned into a pillar of salt. 00:07:24.07\00:07:25.41 That's right so, the lesson there is don't, 00:07:25.44\00:07:28.24 when God says, "Go forward, don't turn back." 00:07:28.28\00:07:30.71 Don't even look back and she looked back 00:07:30.75\00:07:33.35 and that's why the question, it's a simple verse remember 00:07:33.38\00:07:36.62 "Lot's wife," just those three words. 00:07:36.65\00:07:40.06 And then the other one is in Ecclesiastes 12:1, 00:07:40.09\00:07:44.33 "Remember now the creator in the days of your youth." 00:07:44.36\00:07:48.13 Well, nobody would argue with the fact 00:07:48.16\00:07:49.96 that young people need to know the Lord, right. 00:07:50.00\00:07:52.30 Young people today, one of the reasons our society, 00:07:52.33\00:07:55.00 and this is not just in the 2000s or 2017s 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.17 or whatever the case may be, but this is in all generations, 00:07:58.21\00:08:02.41 young people in every generation 00:08:02.44\00:08:04.21 have a tendency not to have a desire to know the Lord. 00:08:04.25\00:08:08.12 The world grabs on to the mind of the young people 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.69 whether it's the 50s 00:08:10.72\00:08:13.12 when it was out to a movie theaters 00:08:13.15\00:08:15.16 or when rock and roll begin to become... 00:08:15.19\00:08:18.03 I remember looking at some of the stories 00:08:18.06\00:08:19.69 when rock and roll began to surface, 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.56 young people just dove into that, 00:08:21.60\00:08:24.33 so we could see in every generation 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.50 from ancient times to the present, 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.94 young people need to know the Lord, 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.74 and nobody would argue, 00:08:30.77\00:08:32.11 if I said remember the creator while you're young, 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.61 nobody would say, well, that's not important. 00:08:34.64\00:08:37.15 But we get to the Sabbath and it says, 00:08:37.18\00:08:38.85 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." 00:08:38.88\00:08:43.28 Not to make it holy, 00:08:43.32\00:08:44.69 we don't pick a day to make holy, 00:08:44.72\00:08:46.62 we simply choose the day the Lord has already made holy 00:08:46.65\00:08:49.36 and He says, "Remember it to keep it holy." 00:08:49.39\00:08:51.49 Now the question is why is it important? 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.26 Look at verse 10. 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.87 "But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, 00:08:56.90\00:09:01.70 your God." 00:09:01.74\00:09:03.61 The question is who is your God? 00:09:03.64\00:09:07.91 When you honor the Sabbath, you are acknowledging 00:09:07.94\00:09:11.91 that the God of creation is your God, 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.48 so why is it important? 00:09:14.52\00:09:15.92 First of all he says, "Remember" 00:09:15.95\00:09:17.49 secondly if you identify with the Sabbath, 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.26 you identify with a God of creation. 00:09:20.29\00:09:22.56 Go to Genesis, look at Genesis 2. 00:09:22.59\00:09:27.26 Genesis 2 and then we're going to show one more here. 00:09:27.30\00:09:31.17 The Sabbath is important, 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.53 then we'll show one few more texts, 00:09:32.57\00:09:35.20 but the God of creation, when creation was done, 00:09:35.24\00:09:39.04 notice what the Bible tells us about the end of creation. 00:09:39.07\00:09:43.01 "Thus the heavens and the earth, 00:09:43.04\00:09:45.05 and all the host of them were finished." 00:09:45.08\00:09:48.35 Genesis 2:1, "And on the seventh day 00:09:48.38\00:09:51.62 God ended His work which He had done, 00:09:51.65\00:09:55.02 and He rested on the seventh day 00:09:55.06\00:09:58.39 from all His work which He had done. 00:09:58.43\00:10:00.90 And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, 00:10:00.93\00:10:05.57 because in it He rested from all His work 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.60 which He had created and made." 00:10:08.64\00:10:10.91 And so when he says in Exodus 20, 00:10:10.94\00:10:15.31 "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth," 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.65 Exodus 20:11, "For in six days 00:10:17.68\00:10:20.22 the Lord made the heavens and the earth," 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.08 is taken us way back to when there was only Adam and Eve, 00:10:22.12\00:10:25.15 only two individuals. 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.16 No Jews, no Greeks, no other nationality, 00:10:27.19\00:10:30.83 just mom and dad, the beginning of creation. 00:10:30.86\00:10:34.43 So when you honor the Sabbath, you are saying, 00:10:34.46\00:10:37.53 "I am connected to the God of creation." 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.97 But there's one more thing. 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.47 Ezekiel, do you have Ezekiel 20, John, 00:10:41.50\00:10:44.27 go there and I want you to read for us 00:10:44.31\00:10:45.97 verse 12 and verse 20. 00:10:46.01\00:10:48.31 Ezekiel 20:12 and 20, 00:10:48.34\00:10:54.58 this is important, very important. 00:10:54.62\00:10:57.75 Okay. 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.12 "Moreover I gave them My Sabbath, 00:10:59.15\00:11:00.59 to be a sign between them and Me, 00:11:00.62\00:11:02.39 that they might know that I am the Lord 00:11:02.42\00:11:03.93 who sanctifies them." 00:11:03.96\00:11:05.29 Okay, first of all, when you honor the Sabbath, 00:11:05.33\00:11:07.36 it is a sign that you know that the Lord is the one 00:11:07.40\00:11:11.83 that sanctifies you, I thought that was interesting 00:11:11.87\00:11:14.07 because in Exodus chapter... 00:11:14.10\00:11:15.90 in Isaiah 66, one of the reasons Isaiah 65, 00:11:15.94\00:11:19.77 one of the reasons why people are going to be destroyed 00:11:19.81\00:11:22.34 is because they sanctify themselves, 00:11:22.38\00:11:25.08 but when you honor the Sabbath, you recognize that the Lord 00:11:25.11\00:11:28.72 is the one that is sanctifying you, 00:11:28.75\00:11:30.85 but there's something else, verse 20. 00:11:30.89\00:11:34.49 "Hallow My Sabbaths, and there will be a sign 00:11:34.52\00:11:37.06 between Me and you, that you may know 00:11:37.09\00:11:38.99 that I am the Lord, your God." 00:11:39.03\00:11:40.73 Right, so when you hallow the Sabbath, 00:11:40.76\00:11:42.93 you are saying the Lord of creation is my God. 00:11:42.96\00:11:48.44 Why is it so important? 00:11:48.47\00:11:50.17 It is a sign between you and God 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.81 that He's the one that sanctifies you. 00:11:52.84\00:11:54.98 It is a sign between you and God 00:11:55.01\00:11:57.21 that you acknowledge that He is your God. 00:11:57.25\00:12:00.58 Is it important to know that He is your God? 00:12:00.62\00:12:02.82 Yes. 00:12:02.85\00:12:04.19 "And this is life eternal," John 17:3, 00:12:04.22\00:12:06.19 "that you might know God, the only true God 00:12:06.22\00:12:09.92 and Jesus Christ whom He sent." 00:12:09.96\00:12:12.39 The only true God is the one that is connected to creation. 00:12:12.43\00:12:16.43 There are many God's, many lords, 00:12:16.46\00:12:19.30 we are told not to have any other god. 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.20 When you ignore the Sabbath, then you are saying, 00:12:21.24\00:12:24.51 I am not connected to the God of creation, 00:12:24.54\00:12:27.08 and there is no other god that can save you 00:12:27.11\00:12:29.64 but the Lord of creation. 00:12:29.68\00:12:32.31 What's interesting, John, is that it is, 00:12:32.35\00:12:36.25 the Sabbath has come under scrutiny. 00:12:36.28\00:12:37.95 I'm talking about the seventh day Sabbath, 00:12:37.99\00:12:39.49 this might come under scrutiny 00:12:39.52\00:12:40.86 because the accusation has been levied 00:12:40.89\00:12:43.93 by many Christians in the world as those that keep that day, 00:12:43.96\00:12:47.63 the seventh day from Friday sundown 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.73 to Saturday sundown are doing, 00:12:49.76\00:12:52.67 are gauging in legalistic works based system. 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.30 When what we just read shows exactly the opposite. 00:12:56.34\00:12:59.57 By keeping the Sabbath what God is saying 00:12:59.61\00:13:01.48 is that you're showing a dependency, 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.31 a faith relationship with me 00:13:04.35\00:13:05.91 trusting that I am the one that sanctifies you 00:13:05.95\00:13:08.22 and acknowledging that I am your God. 00:13:08.25\00:13:11.35 So the very opposite is actually true 00:13:11.39\00:13:13.42 and Satan works this way, 00:13:13.46\00:13:14.79 I mean he, he knows the Sabbath there's a blessing in that, 00:13:14.82\00:13:17.69 there's a connection between God as the Creator 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.43 and His creation in that and not only to create them 00:13:20.46\00:13:26.17 but Deuteronomy 5 connects recreation with the Sabbath. 00:13:26.20\00:13:32.31 That's right. 00:13:32.34\00:13:33.68 Because it says in that, toward the end of that verse 00:13:33.71\00:13:36.28 which is a recapitulation 00:13:36.31\00:13:37.65 by Moses of the Ten Commandments. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.91 He says there at the end of the fourth commandment there 00:13:39.95\00:13:43.32 that God was the God who brought you 00:13:43.35\00:13:45.09 out of slavery. 00:13:45.12\00:13:46.65 That's right. He's God of deliverance. 00:13:46.69\00:13:48.92 So God of creation and God of deliverance to recreate, 00:13:48.96\00:13:52.53 so everything here points to God setting this day apart, 00:13:52.56\00:13:56.30 to enter into the life and heart of his people 00:13:56.33\00:14:00.14 and as they trust Him, as they depend upon Him 00:14:00.17\00:14:02.04 and put their faith in Him, He sanctifies them, 00:14:02.07\00:14:04.01 He changes them, recreates them 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.47 and they become blessed as a result of that. 00:14:06.51\00:14:09.28 And the devil comes along and says, 00:14:09.31\00:14:10.85 "The day doesn't matter." 00:14:10.88\00:14:12.78 I mean that's amazing because there's... 00:14:12.81\00:14:14.62 I'm sure that the person, well, I'm highly, 00:14:14.65\00:14:17.65 it's a high probability that the person 00:14:17.69\00:14:19.52 that asked this question is a Christian. 00:14:19.55\00:14:21.49 And there are many Christians that watch our program, 00:14:21.52\00:14:23.73 and the majority of Christians in the world today 00:14:23.76\00:14:25.69 have been told that the Sabbath doesn't matter, 00:14:25.73\00:14:28.46 that is for the Jews, it was nailed to the cross, 00:14:28.50\00:14:31.53 it is a symbol of works. 00:14:31.57\00:14:33.54 Let me answer that one, it is, 00:14:33.57\00:14:35.44 first of all it was not nailed to the cross, 00:14:35.47\00:14:37.24 because it had nothing to do with the cross. 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.34 It was established before sin even entered the world. 00:14:39.37\00:14:42.61 Why would something perfect have to be done away with? 00:14:42.64\00:14:45.35 If the Sabbath was nailed to the cross, 00:14:45.38\00:14:46.95 then marriage is nailed to the cross, 00:14:46.98\00:14:48.95 because those are the two institutions 00:14:48.98\00:14:50.69 the Lord blessed before sin even entered the world. 00:14:50.72\00:14:53.72 And how amazing it is today 00:14:53.76\00:14:55.09 that both of those institutions are under fire, 00:14:55.12\00:14:57.53 homosexuality, same sex marriage 00:14:57.56\00:14:59.96 has attacked the family in the marriage. 00:15:00.00\00:15:02.93 And Sunday which has been established as a tradition 00:15:02.96\00:15:06.70 have nothing to do with the scriptures. 00:15:06.74\00:15:09.00 People try to make it connect to the scriptures, 00:15:09.04\00:15:11.34 but those who established it, 00:15:11.37\00:15:12.71 it has no connection to God's command whatsoever. 00:15:12.74\00:15:16.14 It does not connect to any command 00:15:16.18\00:15:18.48 to honor His resurrection. 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.55 Baptism is the symbol of death, burial, and resurrection. 00:15:20.58\00:15:24.19 That's right. 00:15:24.22\00:15:25.55 Walk in the newness of life, raised to the newness of life, 00:15:25.59\00:15:28.72 so men have come up with these 00:15:28.76\00:15:30.56 discombobulated pile of illegitimate excuses 00:15:30.59\00:15:35.10 as to why the Sabbath should be forgotten. 00:15:35.13\00:15:37.37 Let me make the point in transition 00:15:37.40\00:15:38.80 to the next question, 00:15:38.83\00:15:40.17 why is it important? 00:15:40.20\00:15:41.54 Because God said, remember. 00:15:41.57\00:15:43.00 Now here's a simple question. 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.07 I did this a number of years ago, 00:15:45.11\00:15:48.44 and it resulted in a couple giving their lives to Jesus, 00:15:48.48\00:15:51.48 coming out of darkness into this marvelous light. 00:15:51.51\00:15:53.82 I said this and I'll repeat it on this program, 00:15:53.85\00:15:56.05 look at these five words Saturday, Sunday, Sabbath, 00:15:56.08\00:15:59.29 the seventh day, and first day. 00:15:59.32\00:16:01.19 Saturday, Sunday, Sabbath, seventh day, and first day, 00:16:01.22\00:16:06.19 look that up and take it to your pastor 00:16:06.23\00:16:08.46 and ask him to explain 00:16:08.50\00:16:10.43 why you don't honor the Bible Sabbath. 00:16:10.47\00:16:13.03 I had a Presbyterian couple come 00:16:13.07\00:16:14.87 one Wednesday evening to our church 00:16:14.90\00:16:16.30 and stood up and I thought they were visiting 3ABN, 00:16:16.34\00:16:19.34 and I came to find out after asking questions, 00:16:19.37\00:16:20.88 "Are you an elder? 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.24 Are you a deacon? Are you a member? 00:16:22.28\00:16:23.61 Are you an Adventist? 00:16:23.65\00:16:25.01 And they said, "No, no, no, no." 00:16:25.05\00:16:28.08 I said, "Why are you here?" 00:16:28.12\00:16:29.72 In the very questions I put out, 00:16:29.75\00:16:31.49 they said, "Well, we were watching House Calls 00:16:31.52\00:16:32.99 and you said, "Look up Saturday, 00:16:33.02\00:16:34.36 Sunday, seventh day, first day and Sabbath." 00:16:34.39\00:16:37.03 And we did and we went to our pastor 00:16:37.06\00:16:39.36 and that's why we're here." 00:16:39.39\00:16:41.20 And their pastor said to them, 00:16:41.23\00:16:44.47 this man was an elder in his church 40 years, 00:16:44.50\00:16:46.97 the pastor said to them, 00:16:47.00\00:16:48.70 "You're causing problems in our church." 00:16:48.74\00:16:51.81 And he said, "No, I'm not Pastor, 00:16:51.84\00:16:53.58 I'm simply following the Bible." 00:16:53.61\00:16:55.34 And then this pastor ended by saying, "You have a problem, 00:16:55.38\00:16:58.45 you fix it." 00:16:58.48\00:16:59.81 And he said, "I am, 00:16:59.85\00:17:01.18 I'm going to the Seventh-day Adventist Church." 00:17:01.22\00:17:02.55 You also mentioned something 00:17:02.58\00:17:03.92 to the effect that you're a member, 00:17:03.95\00:17:05.95 you sit in a pew. 00:17:05.99\00:17:07.32 I'm the pastor, I'm the one that preaches. 00:17:07.36\00:17:09.06 Exactly, he said, "I speak, you listen." 00:17:09.09\00:17:12.03 And he said, "No, it doesn't work that way." 00:17:12.06\00:17:13.40 And they went away, and they came 00:17:13.43\00:17:15.16 and they both got baptized and they accepted the Sabbath. 00:17:15.20\00:17:18.43 But it's a simple equation, God says, remember. 00:17:18.47\00:17:22.64 Let me say that again because somehow 00:17:22.67\00:17:25.57 our ears have been so tuned to the wrong voice. 00:17:25.61\00:17:29.04 God says, "Remember." 00:17:29.08\00:17:32.61 God says, "Remember." 00:17:32.65\00:17:34.08 Man says, "Forget the Sabbath." 00:17:34.12\00:17:38.09 God says, "Remember the Sabbath." 00:17:38.12\00:17:40.76 And mankind and the majority of Christians 00:17:40.79\00:17:44.16 follow what man says and not what God says. 00:17:44.19\00:17:48.30 That shows you how important it is. 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.70 The devil would not attack something so vehemently 00:17:51.73\00:17:54.87 if it was not important to God. 00:17:54.90\00:17:56.24 Yeah, yeah. 00:17:56.27\00:17:57.67 He knows what a blessing it can be 00:17:57.71\00:17:59.91 and we know that the advancement of evolution 00:17:59.94\00:18:04.75 wouldn't have been so strong and gained so much ground, 00:18:04.78\00:18:07.78 how do we remember the Sabbath? 00:18:07.82\00:18:09.78 Because the Sabbath points to the creator 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.85 and the week of creation. 00:18:11.89\00:18:13.39 He created the world in six days 00:18:13.42\00:18:16.86 and rested on the seventh. 00:18:16.89\00:18:18.36 Had we remembered that, 00:18:18.39\00:18:20.16 we wouldn't have forgotten and fell into evolution, 00:18:20.20\00:18:23.57 macroevolution as we have today. 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.23 You know what amazes me also, John, 00:18:25.27\00:18:26.60 there is a Creation Research Institute, 00:18:26.63\00:18:29.00 they do a great job. 00:18:29.04\00:18:30.37 Creation Research Institute, 00:18:30.41\00:18:32.17 recently I think they've built 00:18:32.21\00:18:33.91 a whole model of the creation week. 00:18:33.94\00:18:36.78 I'm just blown away 00:18:36.81\00:18:38.45 that they could put a model of the creation week 00:18:38.48\00:18:41.22 and they only covered six days. 00:18:41.25\00:18:44.72 They are the Creation Research Institute 00:18:44.75\00:18:48.52 and they put a model that people lord over 00:18:48.56\00:18:51.49 and you go then they say this is the week of creation 00:18:51.53\00:18:54.53 and they exclude the seventh day. 00:18:54.56\00:18:57.30 Which is the capstone. 00:18:57.33\00:18:58.67 Which is the capstone of the week. 00:18:58.70\00:19:00.04 And there is no place in the world 00:19:00.07\00:19:02.24 not in the constellation, not in the rotation of the sun, 00:19:02.27\00:19:05.11 not in the rotation of the moon, 00:19:05.14\00:19:06.71 the full moons during in the month, 00:19:06.74\00:19:08.24 not in the seasons changing four times a year 00:19:08.28\00:19:10.85 and not in the entire 365 day year. 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.55 There is no place you can find a seven day week 00:19:14.58\00:19:16.82 except in the Bible. 00:19:16.85\00:19:18.19 There's a reason why God gave the seventh one, 00:19:18.22\00:19:20.96 it is the perfect number, the number of divinity, 00:19:20.99\00:19:23.53 and it is the capstone of our relationship 00:19:23.56\00:19:25.66 between Him and you, and Him and us. 00:19:25.69\00:19:28.76 And by the way, I didn't mention the text, 00:19:28.80\00:19:31.27 but some people say 00:19:31.30\00:19:32.63 but the Sabbath is not mentioned 00:19:32.67\00:19:34.00 in the New Testament. 00:19:34.04\00:19:35.37 The Sabbath is mentioned 60 times in the New Testament. 00:19:35.40\00:19:38.94 The first day is only mentioned 12. 00:19:38.97\00:19:41.18 Eight of those references 00:19:41.21\00:19:42.54 have to do with the resurrection. 00:19:42.58\00:19:43.91 So you only have four chances 00:19:43.95\00:19:45.55 to come up with a replacement for the Sabbath 00:19:45.58\00:19:48.42 and you cannot because those four have 00:19:48.45\00:19:50.05 nothing to do with the change of the Sabbath. 00:19:50.09\00:19:52.39 One has to do with the breaking of bread 00:19:52.42\00:19:53.92 on the first day of the week 00:19:53.96\00:19:55.29 which they did every day. 00:19:55.32\00:19:56.99 The other one has to do with collecting offering 00:19:57.03\00:19:58.49 in Corinthians, 1 Corinthians 16, 00:19:58.53\00:20:00.40 which was an offering that was collected not at church 00:20:00.43\00:20:03.00 but from house to house like the Salvation Army would. 00:20:03.03\00:20:06.84 And the other one was simply saying, 00:20:06.87\00:20:09.74 I'll meet you on this particular first day, 00:20:09.77\00:20:12.37 and the last one was the disciples 00:20:12.41\00:20:14.21 hiding for fear of the Jews 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.38 after the resurrection of Jesus at the death of Jesus, 00:20:16.41\00:20:19.38 and the Bible says, and they gathered together, 00:20:19.41\00:20:21.72 and people teach that they gathered together 00:20:21.75\00:20:23.49 for worship service. 00:20:23.52\00:20:24.85 Read the whole context, 00:20:24.89\00:20:26.22 they were hiding behind locked doors 00:20:26.25\00:20:27.92 for fear of their lives, it was not a worship service. 00:20:27.96\00:20:31.03 So let's be honest and follow God's word, 00:20:31.06\00:20:34.16 and you will understand that when you love the Lord, 00:20:34.20\00:20:37.30 the Sabbath is not an issue. 00:20:37.33\00:20:39.47 Yes. 00:20:39.50\00:20:41.00 Okay, we have one more question here 00:20:41.04\00:20:42.50 before we move into the rest of our program. 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.37 Sure. 00:20:44.41\00:20:45.74 It's in regard to Hebrews 9:12. 00:20:45.77\00:20:50.18 Oh, yes. 00:20:50.21\00:20:52.38 And here's what Chapter 9:12 actually says, 00:20:52.41\00:20:56.79 and I'm reading from the New King James Version. 00:20:56.82\00:21:00.46 Well, I'll read verse 11 first, 00:21:00.49\00:21:01.86 "But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, 00:21:01.89\00:21:05.06 which the greater and more perfect tabernacle 00:21:05.09\00:21:07.73 not made with hands, 00:21:07.76\00:21:09.10 that is not of this creation. 00:21:09.13\00:21:10.87 Not with the blood of goats and calves, 00:21:10.90\00:21:12.93 but with His own blood 00:21:12.97\00:21:14.30 He entered into the Most Holy Place once and for all, 00:21:14.34\00:21:17.81 having obtained eternal redemption." 00:21:17.84\00:21:21.28 The question is asked here is surrounding some confusion, 00:21:21.31\00:21:25.98 King James Version says, "Holy Place," 00:21:26.01\00:21:28.12 New King James says, "Most Holy Place." 00:21:28.15\00:21:30.35 In fact, most other translations 00:21:30.39\00:21:32.45 also say most holy place there. 00:21:32.49\00:21:35.16 So is the writer referring 00:21:35.19\00:21:36.52 to Jesus entering the Holy Place on His ascension 00:21:36.56\00:21:39.36 or the Most Holy Place upon His ascension? 00:21:39.39\00:21:42.76 We as Adventist understand that Christ 00:21:42.80\00:21:45.80 and especially all high priest, 00:21:45.83\00:21:48.67 the priestly service surrounded the high priest 00:21:48.70\00:21:50.74 entering into the Holy Place first 00:21:50.77\00:21:53.04 throughout the year 00:21:53.07\00:21:54.41 offering they continue to bring in the continual sacrifices 00:21:54.44\00:21:56.58 into the tabernacle. 00:21:56.61\00:21:58.35 He only went into the Most Holy Place 00:21:58.38\00:22:00.28 once at the end of the year 00:22:00.32\00:22:02.25 in the ceremonial system and that was called, 00:22:02.28\00:22:04.55 "The Day of Atonement". 00:22:04.59\00:22:06.52 And then on that day it completes the annual cycle 00:22:06.55\00:22:09.82 of sacrifices and ceremonies... 00:22:09.86\00:22:11.59 That's right. 00:22:11.63\00:22:12.96 That provide a picture, 00:22:12.99\00:22:14.70 overall picture of the plan of salvation. 00:22:14.73\00:22:16.67 The church has been challenged in the past, 00:22:19.83\00:22:23.04 on this understanding based upon this verse, 00:22:23.07\00:22:26.91 because this verse as most read it 00:22:26.94\00:22:28.88 and most translations give it says, Most Holy Place. 00:22:28.91\00:22:33.28 But it actually isn't the Most Holy Place, 00:22:33.31\00:22:36.69 it's a wrong translation in most every case. 00:22:36.72\00:22:39.89 And just a quick way, we can get it, 00:22:39.92\00:22:41.59 we could spend a whole program on that 00:22:41.62\00:22:43.06 but we're not going to do that. 00:22:43.09\00:22:44.46 Just a quick thing here, 00:22:44.49\00:22:45.83 just a couple of things to take a look at. 00:22:45.86\00:22:48.76 You have to follow from Hebrews 9: 1-5 first 00:22:48.80\00:22:53.67 and follow the words used for sanctuary, 00:22:53.70\00:22:57.61 and for Holy Place and Most Holy Place. 00:22:57.64\00:22:59.47 You have to follow that very carefully, 00:22:59.51\00:23:01.88 and you will find that the only time 00:23:01.91\00:23:04.05 the Most Holy Place is mentioned is in verse 3. 00:23:04.08\00:23:08.08 Because in verse 3 it says, hagia hagioon, 00:23:08.12\00:23:11.62 which is holy of holies, that's in verse 3. 00:23:11.65\00:23:15.52 Nowhere else in that passage not even down in 9:12, 00:23:15.56\00:23:18.39 does it say hagia hagioon. 00:23:18.43\00:23:20.86 It's either hagia or hagioon. 00:23:20.90\00:23:24.43 Plural and singular also has an effect 00:23:24.47\00:23:26.40 on how you interpret this, 00:23:26.43\00:23:28.07 so the interpreters as they went through this thing 00:23:28.10\00:23:31.77 did the best they could with their understanding 00:23:31.81\00:23:33.74 at the time and probably in many cases 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.08 not linking it to the depth of study 00:23:36.11\00:23:38.48 that we have had now up to the time today 00:23:38.51\00:23:41.52 of the old ceremonial system to understand the process. 00:23:41.55\00:23:44.89 So what you're reading here in verse 12, 00:23:44.92\00:23:47.96 actually relates to the first apartment of the sanctuary, 00:23:47.99\00:23:52.66 not the second. 00:23:52.69\00:23:54.03 Good. 00:23:54.06\00:23:55.40 So that's the answer to the quick question, 00:23:55.43\00:23:57.53 hopefully clearing out some for that, 00:23:57.57\00:23:59.40 but I suggest you also continue to read that, 00:23:59.43\00:24:01.84 read the passage and especially read in the Greek. 00:24:01.87\00:24:04.57 You don't have to know Greek, 00:24:04.61\00:24:05.94 but read the words there 00:24:05.97\00:24:07.31 and you'll see that they're very inconsistent 00:24:07.34\00:24:08.68 in these translations as to how they translate 00:24:08.71\00:24:10.98 those different apartments. 00:24:11.01\00:24:13.55 And the reason why I say 1-5 there, 00:24:13.58\00:24:15.85 John, is because it clearly spells out 00:24:15.88\00:24:19.09 the sanctuary in general, 00:24:19.12\00:24:20.86 the first apartment and second apartment, 00:24:20.89\00:24:22.99 second apartment and it tags 00:24:23.02\00:24:25.43 or specifically mentions those with the words 00:24:25.46\00:24:28.10 that describe them and from there 00:24:28.13\00:24:30.30 they lose consistency in most cases, so anyway. 00:24:30.33\00:24:33.20 In understanding it, 00:24:33.23\00:24:34.57 I'm glad you made that point 00:24:34.60\00:24:35.94 understanding of the ceremonial services 00:24:35.97\00:24:37.31 and how they occurred, 00:24:37.34\00:24:38.67 you'll know clearly, but when it said, 00:24:38.71\00:24:41.18 I'll just turn the passage away but when he says, 00:24:41.21\00:24:43.21 he entered the Most Holy once for all, 00:24:43.24\00:24:45.71 he's just simply talking about the completion 00:24:45.75\00:24:47.52 when he entered once for all. 00:24:47.55\00:24:49.75 The inference is better, he entered once, 00:24:49.78\00:24:52.72 he entered once a year. 00:24:52.75\00:24:54.46 He didn't enter that at the time of his accession, 00:24:54.49\00:24:56.73 he went to the holy. 00:24:56.76\00:24:58.09 And the once a year 00:24:58.13\00:24:59.46 was the part of the cleansing of the sanctuary, 00:24:59.49\00:25:02.56 but you did a very good job on that, thank you, John. 00:25:02.60\00:25:05.10 I have one quick question 00:25:05.13\00:25:06.47 I think we could answer this in the time 00:25:06.50\00:25:07.87 we have before we go into our topic, 00:25:07.90\00:25:10.07 but the question is, "I have, I had always, 00:25:10.11\00:25:12.77 this is from Collin, thank you Collin 00:25:12.81\00:25:18.08 for this question about the lamb's wife. 00:25:18.11\00:25:23.02 I had always thought so, 00:25:23.05\00:25:25.45 is the church the bride of Christ? 00:25:25.49\00:25:26.96 He said, I'd always thought so. 00:25:26.99\00:25:29.59 Fundamental belief number 12, 00:25:29.62\00:25:31.43 the church is the bride for whom Christ died 00:25:31.46\00:25:34.16 that He might sanctify and cleanse her 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.60 and that's in the church manual chapter 2 of the church manual 00:25:36.63\00:25:41.67 and the scriptures analogies 00:25:41.70\00:25:43.10 of the husband wife relationship. 00:25:43.14\00:25:45.27 He said, "But I read in Great Controversy Chapter 24, 00:25:45.31\00:25:48.38 which says, "The holy city, the New Jerusalem, 00:25:48.41\00:25:49.88 which is the capital 00:25:49.91\00:25:51.25 and the representative of the kingdom 00:25:51.28\00:25:52.61 is called, "The Bride, the Lamb's wife". 00:25:52.65\00:25:54.55 And that's in fact true, Revelation 21:9, 10. 00:25:54.58\00:25:58.35 Let me read that passage here and it says, verse 9, 00:25:58.39\00:26:03.69 and one of the seven angels, Revelation 21:9, 00:26:03.73\00:26:07.43 "Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls 00:26:07.46\00:26:10.20 filled with the seven last plagues 00:26:10.23\00:26:11.90 came to me and talked with me, 00:26:11.93\00:26:13.27 saying, "Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife. 00:26:13.30\00:26:17.94 And he carried me away in the spirit 00:26:17.97\00:26:19.81 to a great and high mountain, 00:26:19.84\00:26:21.84 and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, 00:26:21.88\00:26:24.78 descending out of heaven from God," 00:26:24.81\00:26:27.68 and the answer is, 00:26:27.72\00:26:29.05 is the New Jerusalem the Lamb's wife? 00:26:29.08\00:26:30.82 And the answer is, yes. 00:26:30.85\00:26:32.35 That's what the Bible says clearly. 00:26:32.39\00:26:34.46 The only reason why this connection was made 00:26:34.49\00:26:38.03 was in conjunction with Revelation 19, 00:26:38.06\00:26:42.30 because you find and here's, here's the beautiful parable, 00:26:42.33\00:26:45.30 you know, the parable of the ten virgins? 00:26:45.33\00:26:47.67 You have the... 00:26:47.70\00:26:49.04 Those are the bridesmaids if you were to consider that, 00:26:49.07\00:26:52.17 it's five wise, five foolish, 00:26:52.21\00:26:54.54 and then you have the bridegroom, 00:26:54.58\00:26:57.41 and then you have the bride, 00:26:57.45\00:26:58.78 and they're waiting for the bridegroom to come, 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.65 behold the bridegroom cometh, go out to meet Him. 00:27:00.68\00:27:03.32 Now if the church represents the five wives 00:27:03.35\00:27:06.12 and five foolish virgins, they can't represent the bride, 00:27:06.15\00:27:09.69 and that was a parable 00:27:09.72\00:27:11.06 of the five wise and the five foolish, 00:27:11.09\00:27:12.89 the division of the church 00:27:12.93\00:27:14.26 or as we would say the wheat and the tears. 00:27:14.30\00:27:16.30 If they represent the five wise and the five foolish virgins 00:27:16.33\00:27:19.50 which are like the bridesmaids at the wedding, 00:27:19.53\00:27:21.77 they cannot represent the bride. 00:27:21.80\00:27:23.87 Until Revelation makes it very clear, 00:27:23.91\00:27:25.87 where they connect those 00:27:25.91\00:27:27.41 where the statement is made is when Paul says, 00:27:27.44\00:27:31.05 "Speaking of the woman, 00:27:31.08\00:27:33.28 husbands love your wives 00:27:33.31\00:27:35.02 as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it." 00:27:35.05\00:27:38.19 And then he talks about, 00:27:38.22\00:27:39.55 "He's going to sanctify her and He's coming back for church 00:27:39.59\00:27:42.56 without spot or wrinkle or any such thing." 00:27:42.59\00:27:45.53 He's speaking about 00:27:45.56\00:27:46.90 the righteousness of the Christian 00:27:46.93\00:27:49.36 who is looking forward to the coming of the Lord, 00:27:49.40\00:27:52.03 and here's Revelation 19:7, 00:27:52.07\00:27:54.80 "Let us be glad and rejoice and give glory, 00:27:54.84\00:27:58.07 for the marriage of the Lamb has come, 00:27:58.11\00:28:00.84 and His wife has made herself ready." 00:28:00.88\00:28:03.51 That's the other's connection, so here's the condition, 00:28:03.55\00:28:07.52 to have the New Jerusalem to be involved in the wedding feast, 00:28:07.55\00:28:12.25 you have to have guest. 00:28:12.29\00:28:13.82 So the wedding feast will include the guest 00:28:13.86\00:28:16.86 which is in fact 00:28:16.89\00:28:18.23 spoken of as since Jesus is the bridegroom, 00:28:18.26\00:28:21.33 His church will be in fact connected as the bride 00:28:21.36\00:28:24.17 without spot or wrinkle or any such thing. 00:28:24.20\00:28:26.67 And here is the support for that. 00:28:26.70\00:28:28.90 I just read Revelation 19:7, 00:28:28.94\00:28:31.41 "For the marriage of the Lamb has come, 00:28:31.44\00:28:32.97 and His wife has made herself ready." 00:28:33.01\00:28:35.08 And notice how the wife is identified. 00:28:35.11\00:28:37.55 "And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, 00:28:37.58\00:28:41.58 clean and bright, for the fine linen 00:28:41.62\00:28:44.82 is the righteous acts of the saints." 00:28:44.85\00:28:47.56 So the saints are referred to as fine linen, 00:28:47.59\00:28:50.43 and finally verse 9, "Then he said to me, 00:28:50.46\00:28:52.59 "Write: 'Blessed are those 00:28:52.63\00:28:54.03 who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!'" 00:28:54.06\00:28:56.93 And he said to me, 00:28:56.97\00:28:58.30 "These are the true sayings of God." 00:28:58.33\00:29:00.04 So the church is spoken of in context of the saints 00:29:00.07\00:29:03.10 covered in the beauty of the bride 00:29:03.14\00:29:05.61 and the New Jerusalem 00:29:05.64\00:29:06.98 which is in fact the Lamb's wife of the bride. 00:29:07.01\00:29:09.84 And there would be no New Jerusalem 00:29:09.88\00:29:11.78 without the saints in it. 00:29:11.81\00:29:13.15 Exactly. 00:29:13.18\00:29:14.52 So it's interchangeable, there is no hard and fast rule 00:29:14.55\00:29:16.99 that one or the other is preferred, 00:29:17.02\00:29:19.19 but both are connected 00:29:19.22\00:29:20.56 because when you have the marriage feast, 00:29:20.59\00:29:22.59 the church is there. 00:29:22.62\00:29:23.96 Yeah, and the imagery in the Old Testament 00:29:23.99\00:29:25.33 also is that the... 00:29:25.36\00:29:27.10 heed that God's people are His bride, 00:29:27.13\00:29:28.70 He is the bridegroom. 00:29:28.73\00:29:30.07 That's right. 00:29:30.10\00:29:31.43 So there is a definite connection 00:29:31.47\00:29:32.80 between the New Jerusalem 00:29:32.83\00:29:34.17 and the saints that are in it here. 00:29:34.20\00:29:35.60 In that respect, they're both part of His bride. 00:29:35.64\00:29:37.91 Right. 00:29:37.94\00:29:39.27 And you find the woman spoken in Revelation 12, 00:29:39.31\00:29:41.64 she's pregnant, she's going to have a baby, 00:29:41.68\00:29:43.68 and she's arrayed in clean and white, she has the sun, 00:29:43.71\00:29:48.95 moon and stars, the glory of God's righteousness. 00:29:48.98\00:29:51.62 So the pictures are there and the symbolism is there, 00:29:51.65\00:29:54.39 so there's no hard and fast rule 00:29:54.42\00:29:56.83 that one must be preferred above the other, 00:29:56.86\00:29:59.13 but both are connected. 00:29:59.16\00:30:00.50 Or one to the exclusion of the other. 00:30:00.53\00:30:01.86 Exactly. Yeah. 00:30:01.90\00:30:03.23 Right, John, take us into it. 00:30:03.26\00:30:04.60 By the way, if you have any more questions 00:30:04.63\00:30:05.97 to send to us, you can send those questions 00:30:06.00\00:30:07.34 to this following email address, 00:30:07.37\00:30:09.14 housecalls@3abn.org 00:30:09.17\00:30:11.11 That's housecalls@3abn.org 00:30:11.14\00:30:13.71 And thank you very much 00:30:13.74\00:30:15.48 for your support of this network 00:30:15.51\00:30:16.98 and this program. 00:30:17.01\00:30:18.48 Takes us to our topic today, John, "Discipleship", 00:30:18.51\00:30:20.88 a study that you put together as Personal Ministries 00:30:20.92\00:30:23.82 and Sabbath School Director 00:30:23.85\00:30:25.19 in the Upper Columbia Conference. 00:30:25.22\00:30:26.55 Yeah, it's a seminar, it's kind of a series, 00:30:26.59\00:30:28.66 a miniseries, and it's something that I use 00:30:28.69\00:30:30.99 and we hope to at least in our conference 00:30:31.03\00:30:33.13 encourage our churches to get back to the discipleship model 00:30:33.16\00:30:36.87 that Christ instituted from the very beginning. 00:30:36.90\00:30:39.67 You know, Jesus spent three and a half years 00:30:39.70\00:30:43.17 preparing His disciples, creating disciples, 00:30:43.20\00:30:45.94 making disciples Himself, 00:30:45.97\00:30:48.04 and He did that through a number of ways. 00:30:48.08\00:30:52.35 Doesn't it make sense 00:30:52.38\00:30:53.92 that the church would put in a lot of time 00:30:53.95\00:30:57.72 and energy as well 00:30:57.75\00:30:59.12 in preparing people to be disciples as well of Christ? 00:30:59.15\00:31:01.76 It would make sense. 00:31:01.79\00:31:03.12 It makes sense to me, 00:31:03.16\00:31:04.49 and I mentioned this quote in the last, 00:31:04.53\00:31:07.33 in the last program, 00:31:07.36\00:31:08.70 and I want to mention it again that, 00:31:08.73\00:31:11.67 if the church did discipleship right, 00:31:11.70\00:31:15.14 evangelism would largely take care of itself. 00:31:15.17\00:31:19.14 So if people accepted and committed 00:31:19.17\00:31:21.51 to a life of discipleship 00:31:21.54\00:31:23.38 in the way that Christ has called His disciples... 00:31:23.41\00:31:25.28 Right. 00:31:25.31\00:31:26.65 The church wouldn't be begging 00:31:26.68\00:31:28.02 through flyer sent out all the time for interest 00:31:28.05\00:31:31.22 and new people coming into the church 00:31:31.25\00:31:33.96 in response to the gospel. 00:31:33.99\00:31:36.06 And so I think that 00:31:36.09\00:31:37.43 one of the things we are missing, 00:31:37.46\00:31:38.79 a huge thing we're missing in North America specifically 00:31:38.83\00:31:41.16 because other countries are experiencing incredible growth 00:31:41.20\00:31:43.77 and their focus, their emphasis is discipleship. 00:31:43.80\00:31:47.24 Their pastors come around 00:31:47.27\00:31:48.60 and they're seen maybe once every... 00:31:48.64\00:31:50.27 A cycle. 00:31:50.31\00:31:51.64 Twenty visits or something so we are not suggesting 00:31:51.67\00:31:56.01 that we go to that immediately here, 00:31:56.04\00:31:57.91 but there is coming a time 00:31:57.95\00:31:59.45 where I think the Lord is transitioning us 00:31:59.48\00:32:01.85 out of necessity back to a model 00:32:01.88\00:32:04.45 that is less pastor dependent and more discipleship focused. 00:32:04.49\00:32:08.86 So what I want to talk about today 00:32:08.89\00:32:10.29 as we then transition is, 00:32:10.33\00:32:11.79 what did Jesus say in regard to His disciples? 00:32:11.83\00:32:14.60 What were the conditions? And there are four of them. 00:32:14.63\00:32:17.00 What were the conditions of discipleship 00:32:17.03\00:32:19.53 that Christ specifically mentions, 00:32:19.57\00:32:22.74 so that we can understand 00:32:22.77\00:32:24.11 what it means to be a disciple of Christ, 00:32:24.14\00:32:25.51 because that's where we kind of have to start, right? 00:32:25.54\00:32:27.08 What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? 00:32:27.11\00:32:30.18 Before we get there, I want to mention... 00:32:30.21\00:32:32.61 Well, I'm not going to mention that, 00:32:32.65\00:32:33.98 I'm gonna wait till the next program to do it, 00:32:34.02\00:32:35.48 so let's dive right into that. 00:32:35.52\00:32:37.69 In fact on your notes that I gave you there, John, 00:32:37.72\00:32:39.59 it's right around or slide, 00:32:39.62\00:32:45.03 it's 26, I think it is, so you'll find that. 00:32:45.06\00:32:49.06 I shared my program here with John, 00:32:49.10\00:32:50.77 and we're working off that for our notes today. 00:32:50.80\00:32:55.10 In making disciples and creating His disciples, 00:32:55.14\00:32:57.87 Jesus did several things that were very intentional. 00:32:57.91\00:33:01.91 Okay, and I'm gonna name seven things, 00:33:01.94\00:33:03.28 so we're not getting yet 00:33:03.31\00:33:04.65 to the conditions of discipleship. 00:33:04.68\00:33:06.01 We're looking at seven things Jesus did as He made disciples. 00:33:06.05\00:33:09.22 Number one, He chose a small number of disciples. 00:33:09.25\00:33:11.02 Okay. 00:33:11.05\00:33:12.39 So first when He created, 00:33:12.42\00:33:13.76 He spent time personally with a smaller number. 00:33:13.79\00:33:16.69 This is another reason 00:33:16.73\00:33:18.06 why pastors can't be depended upon 00:33:18.09\00:33:20.86 to create all the disciples in the church. 00:33:20.90\00:33:22.73 The whole church and its leadership 00:33:22.76\00:33:24.40 needs to be involved. 00:33:24.43\00:33:26.13 Disciples are disciple makers and you need a group, 00:33:26.17\00:33:29.60 you need a limited number 00:33:29.64\00:33:31.07 that you work with personally to mentor, 00:33:31.11\00:33:33.24 to coach and to help them understand 00:33:33.27\00:33:34.84 what it means to be disciples, Jesus did that. 00:33:34.88\00:33:37.08 He built personal relationships. 00:33:37.11\00:33:39.78 He invested time in them personally. 00:33:39.81\00:33:42.85 He became a servant leader. 00:33:42.88\00:33:45.25 Discipleship isn't about leading from position 00:33:45.29\00:33:49.12 or from some part of a title or office. 00:33:49.16\00:33:53.90 It's about being a servant leader 00:33:53.93\00:33:56.30 and spending time with them 00:33:56.33\00:33:57.83 and helping them along as disciples. 00:33:57.87\00:34:00.14 Number five, He taught by word and example, 00:34:00.17\00:34:02.37 so He didn't just teach it, He didn't just say it, 00:34:02.40\00:34:04.57 He went out there and He did it. 00:34:04.61\00:34:06.37 And so many times 00:34:06.41\00:34:07.74 we like to have seminars in churches today 00:34:07.78\00:34:10.21 about this or that including discipleship, 00:34:10.25\00:34:12.71 and we think, okay, now let's see if it's changed, 00:34:12.75\00:34:16.28 and we don't actually effectuate 00:34:16.32\00:34:18.25 or help that change by doing what we've just talked about. 00:34:18.29\00:34:21.62 Right. 00:34:21.66\00:34:22.99 And that's, I think that's one of the challenges 00:34:23.02\00:34:24.63 of bringing somebody in 00:34:24.66\00:34:26.13 and not having good follow up after something. 00:34:26.16\00:34:28.03 If you really mean that that individual 00:34:28.06\00:34:30.33 who comes in is to help effect change in the church, 00:34:30.37\00:34:33.87 follow up and do something about it. 00:34:33.90\00:34:35.34 True. 00:34:35.37\00:34:36.71 And number six, then He sent them out 00:34:36.74\00:34:38.64 to practice what they had learned 00:34:38.67\00:34:40.64 and then lastly, He held them accountable, 00:34:40.68\00:34:42.78 you have, find him teaching after the fact 00:34:42.81\00:34:44.88 as to what happened in their experience. 00:34:44.91\00:34:48.05 And so this is what Jesus did. 00:34:48.08\00:34:50.15 And so as we get to this point of talking 00:34:50.19\00:34:53.25 about the four conditions of discipleship, 00:34:53.29\00:34:55.72 we're talking about a Jesus 00:34:55.76\00:34:57.13 who is a Messiah with His disciples 00:34:57.16\00:35:00.80 who has a hands on relational nurturing experience 00:35:00.83\00:35:05.10 with the people, not just principles He taught. 00:35:05.13\00:35:08.04 I want to get this point across. 00:35:08.07\00:35:09.64 This is something that He nurtured them, 00:35:09.67\00:35:11.97 He gave them special attention 00:35:12.01\00:35:13.48 to help bring them along and understand it. 00:35:13.51\00:35:16.51 And that, you know, John, when you think about that, 00:35:16.54\00:35:18.81 the whole idea of choosing a small group, 00:35:18.85\00:35:22.58 even among the 12 00:35:22.62\00:35:23.99 he had a smaller group, Peter, James, and John. 00:35:24.02\00:35:27.49 He had His internal support group, 00:35:27.52\00:35:29.99 the other disciples for whatever reason, 00:35:30.03\00:35:32.79 and Jesus, you couldn't argue with His choice, 00:35:32.83\00:35:35.06 He chose a close knit group, 00:35:35.10\00:35:37.80 and you find they're mentioned quite a bit. 00:35:37.83\00:35:39.43 Matter of fact, 00:35:39.47\00:35:40.80 the New Testament highlights them too, 00:35:40.84\00:35:42.67 Peter, James, and John. 00:35:42.70\00:35:44.17 Unfortunately, James became a victim 00:35:44.21\00:35:47.24 in the formation of the New Testament church 00:35:47.28\00:35:50.41 he became, he was victimized, he lost his life. 00:35:50.45\00:35:53.72 Peter eventually was crucified upside down, 00:35:53.75\00:35:57.12 and John survived to pen the Book of Revelation. 00:35:57.15\00:36:01.46 But Jesus had that small group with Him, 00:36:01.49\00:36:04.36 these three disciples, Peter, James, and John, 00:36:04.39\00:36:06.76 so choosing a small group, 00:36:06.80\00:36:09.16 it's easier for one person to disciple three 00:36:09.20\00:36:12.87 than one person to disciple 12, 00:36:12.90\00:36:15.80 but the other nine followed Jesus 00:36:15.84\00:36:19.51 and were taught by His example. 00:36:19.54\00:36:21.34 And I'm glad you brought that out 00:36:21.38\00:36:23.08 of becoming a servant leader. 00:36:23.11\00:36:25.58 Because a servant leader, when Jesus talked about this, 00:36:25.61\00:36:28.32 He says, Matthew 10:24, 00:36:28.35\00:36:32.45 look at Matthew 10:24. 00:36:32.49\00:36:36.93 This is a very important servant leader passage 00:36:36.96\00:36:40.36 that talks about discipleship. 00:36:40.40\00:36:43.26 Matthew 10:24, here I am. 00:36:43.30\00:36:46.84 Okay. 00:36:46.87\00:36:48.77 My pages have been participating so well, 00:36:48.80\00:36:51.84 they've refused adhere one to the other, 00:36:51.87\00:36:54.94 and Jesus said, "A disciple is not above his teacher, 00:36:54.98\00:37:01.38 nor a servant above his master. 00:37:01.42\00:37:06.02 It is enough for disciple that he be like his teacher, 00:37:06.05\00:37:09.82 and a servant like his master. 00:37:09.86\00:37:12.59 If they have call the master of the house Beelzebub, 00:37:12.63\00:37:15.53 how much more will they call those of his household!" 00:37:15.56\00:37:19.67 You know, Jesus is in essence saying. 00:37:19.70\00:37:22.80 The servant is... 00:37:22.84\00:37:24.17 I mean the disciple is not above his teacher. 00:37:24.21\00:37:28.71 So you have Jesus establishing authority, 00:37:28.74\00:37:31.51 the teacher and the disciple, the leader or the servant, 00:37:31.55\00:37:36.52 and those who are being led 00:37:36.55\00:37:37.95 and those who are being taught how to serve. 00:37:37.99\00:37:40.62 So discipleship is a leader, a teacher, a servant position. 00:37:40.66\00:37:44.93 The discipler is the leader, the teacher, 00:37:44.96\00:37:48.20 and the one modeling the life of a servant. 00:37:48.23\00:37:51.33 And look what Jesus did in the upper room. 00:37:51.37\00:37:52.80 Yeah. 00:37:52.83\00:37:54.17 You know, they're all looking around to see 00:37:54.20\00:37:55.54 who is going to take up the towel 00:37:55.57\00:37:56.91 to wash everybody else's feet and Jesus does it. 00:37:56.94\00:37:58.84 Yeah. 00:37:58.87\00:38:00.21 He was right there, He was their example 00:38:00.24\00:38:01.94 as to what they should do... 00:38:01.98\00:38:03.71 He said in John... 00:38:03.75\00:38:06.21 Yeah, he said in John 13, I've left you an example. 00:38:06.25\00:38:10.02 "Do you not know what I have done?" 00:38:10.05\00:38:11.65 John 13:11, or verse 12, 00:38:11.69\00:38:15.16 He says, "So when He had wash their feet, 00:38:15.19\00:38:18.03 taken His garment, 00:38:18.06\00:38:19.39 and sat down again, He said to them, 00:38:19.43\00:38:21.20 "Do you know what I have done to you?" 00:38:21.23\00:38:24.67 You... 00:38:24.70\00:38:26.03 Once again, "You call Me Teacher," 00:38:26.07\00:38:28.07 John 13:13, 00:38:28.10\00:38:29.80 "You call Me teacher, teacher and Lord, 00:38:29.84\00:38:32.34 and you say, well, for so I am." 00:38:32.37\00:38:34.41 Once again, He took the role, I'm teaching you, 00:38:34.44\00:38:37.25 I'm teaching you, and so discipleship to a large degree 00:38:37.28\00:38:41.88 is where the leader teaches, not just preaches, 00:38:41.92\00:38:47.42 and I think you mentioned that. 00:38:47.46\00:38:48.79 Right. 00:38:48.82\00:38:50.16 Preaching and teaching are not the same. 00:38:50.19\00:38:51.76 Preaching is a one hour exercise a week, 00:38:51.79\00:38:54.80 depending on what kind of church you have. 00:38:54.83\00:38:56.23 Some churches less time, some churches more time, 00:38:56.26\00:38:58.73 but generally within the one hour 00:38:58.77\00:39:00.70 of 168 hour a week, 00:39:00.74\00:39:03.37 you have that one hour designated 00:39:03.41\00:39:05.24 to communicate a message. 00:39:05.27\00:39:06.98 But then you step out of the pulpit, 00:39:07.01\00:39:08.81 step into it preach, proclaim, 00:39:08.84\00:39:11.58 step out of that and you become now 00:39:11.61\00:39:14.05 the one that builds personal relationships, 00:39:14.08\00:39:16.38 the one that invests time become a servant, leader, 00:39:16.42\00:39:20.22 teach by word and example. 00:39:20.26\00:39:21.82 And then you send them out, 00:39:21.86\00:39:23.89 and then you hold them accountable 00:39:23.93\00:39:27.16 for what they've done. 00:39:27.20\00:39:28.53 Yeah, absolutely. 00:39:28.56\00:39:29.90 And so there's, 00:39:29.93\00:39:31.27 there was a definitely an intentional method 00:39:31.30\00:39:33.57 that Jesus had for equipping or for training 00:39:33.60\00:39:37.37 and teaching His disciples. 00:39:37.41\00:39:39.64 And I think the church can learn a lot from that, 00:39:39.67\00:39:42.04 from His example in how we do that in the local church. 00:39:42.08\00:39:45.31 You know, we as a church tend to be very intellectual 00:39:45.35\00:39:48.58 in our approach to the gospel, 00:39:48.62\00:39:51.09 and there's nothing wrong with that 00:39:51.12\00:39:52.45 because Jesus did say to come and see, He taught them, 00:39:52.49\00:39:57.86 He shared with them words 00:39:57.89\00:40:00.03 from scripture to impress upon their mind. 00:40:00.06\00:40:03.30 God in the Old Testament, "Come, let us reason together." 00:40:03.33\00:40:06.70 You know, there's this cognitive aspect to the gospel 00:40:06.74\00:40:10.67 that we do need to accept. 00:40:10.71\00:40:12.64 But God's trying to also reach the heart 00:40:12.67\00:40:15.41 and that is done through relationships, 00:40:15.44\00:40:17.18 not through intellectual mental assent to truth. 00:40:17.21\00:40:19.41 That's right. 00:40:19.45\00:40:20.78 And so the relational part, 00:40:20.82\00:40:22.28 the investment of time 00:40:22.32\00:40:23.65 that is something he did very deliberately 00:40:23.69\00:40:25.02 with a smaller group of people as we talked about, 00:40:25.05\00:40:27.76 and that is what changed their heart except one, 00:40:27.79\00:40:30.89 who is resistant obviously to that. 00:40:30.93\00:40:32.26 Right. 00:40:32.29\00:40:33.63 But, so that, that's I think the church needs to be 00:40:33.66\00:40:36.83 aware of that, knowing that 00:40:36.87\00:40:38.40 if we just stick to the intellectual, 00:40:38.43\00:40:39.97 if we're just bringing people into an evangelistic series 00:40:40.00\00:40:42.64 to try and impress upon their mind 00:40:42.67\00:40:44.84 the fact that this is truth 00:40:44.87\00:40:46.51 and what they maybe have heard in the past is not true, 00:40:46.54\00:40:48.71 is a error, that's not going to, 00:40:48.74\00:40:51.21 that's not going to convert anybody. 00:40:51.25\00:40:53.18 There needs to be a relational component 00:40:53.21\00:40:54.65 that our members have to connect with new people, 00:40:54.68\00:40:56.95 there's got to be relationships develop there. 00:40:56.99\00:41:00.06 Now let's look at then the last 15 minutes we have 00:41:00.09\00:41:03.06 or so here at the four conditions of discipleship. 00:41:03.09\00:41:06.09 Okay. 00:41:06.13\00:41:07.46 So Jesus is teaching them 00:41:07.50\00:41:08.90 and He's showing them by example, 00:41:08.93\00:41:10.60 but what are the things that He's saying 00:41:10.63\00:41:12.73 or He's showing them are crucial components. 00:41:12.77\00:41:18.17 Indispensable components of discipleship 00:41:18.21\00:41:19.57 and there are four of them. 00:41:19.61\00:41:20.94 Okay. 00:41:20.98\00:41:22.31 And I found these four 00:41:22.34\00:41:23.68 because these are direct statements 00:41:23.71\00:41:25.15 in the gospels of Jesus Himself 00:41:25.18\00:41:28.45 and He says either one of two things, 00:41:28.48\00:41:30.62 "If you do this, you will be My disciples 00:41:30.65\00:41:32.89 or if you do not do this, you cannot be My disciples." 00:41:32.92\00:41:35.59 Right. 00:41:35.62\00:41:36.96 So each one of these are backed up 00:41:36.99\00:41:39.09 by a direct statement of Christ to that effect. 00:41:39.13\00:41:41.30 Okay. So let's take the first one. 00:41:41.33\00:41:44.53 Take a look at the first one here. 00:41:44.57\00:41:47.60 Love for God and people. 00:41:47.64\00:41:52.01 I have one text and I'm sure there are many others 00:41:52.04\00:41:54.28 and you can chime in on any of these here. 00:41:54.31\00:41:56.48 But John 13:35, says, 00:41:56.51\00:41:59.25 "By this all will know that you are My disciples, 00:41:59.28\00:42:02.35 if you have love for one another." 00:42:02.38\00:42:04.02 Okay. 00:42:04.05\00:42:05.39 So love is the center, is the motivator, 00:42:05.42\00:42:10.03 the impetus behind discipleship. 00:42:10.06\00:42:14.06 If there's no love for God and love for other people, 00:42:14.10\00:42:17.20 you can't be a disciple. 00:42:17.23\00:42:19.57 I've said many times 00:42:19.60\00:42:21.07 there are lots of people in the church 00:42:21.10\00:42:24.44 that profess Christ and they live like the devil. 00:42:24.47\00:42:29.14 And I say, live like the devil 00:42:29.18\00:42:30.55 not necessarily in their outward lifestyle, 00:42:30.58\00:42:32.58 but they live like the devil in how they treat other people. 00:42:32.61\00:42:35.38 Okay, I like that. 00:42:35.42\00:42:36.75 It's almost like when they see an error in the church 00:42:36.79\00:42:38.92 or something happens in the church 00:42:38.95\00:42:40.29 they disagree with, 00:42:40.32\00:42:41.66 they dispense all Christ's likeness 00:42:41.69\00:42:43.32 for the sake of defending the truth 00:42:43.36\00:42:45.43 and they become downright, dogmatic, 00:42:45.46\00:42:49.90 unapproachable, unkind, 00:42:49.93\00:42:52.97 and there's no greater evidence 00:42:53.00\00:42:56.04 truly of a true sincere Christian 00:42:56.07\00:42:59.31 than someone who's lovable Christ like 00:42:59.34\00:43:01.24 and very kind toward others. 00:43:01.28\00:43:03.88 And so this is the first condition that Christ gave. 00:43:03.91\00:43:06.65 You got to have love for other people. 00:43:06.68\00:43:08.45 Love for Me as well, 00:43:08.48\00:43:09.82 He talked about love for Himself and for God. 00:43:09.85\00:43:11.72 Of course that's the centerpiece, 00:43:11.75\00:43:13.12 the first part of the commandments 00:43:13.15\00:43:14.49 love for God, the second part, love for our fellow men. 00:43:14.52\00:43:17.76 You know, Proverbs 10:12, says, "Love covers all sins." 00:43:17.79\00:43:23.06 You know, sometimes love covers a multitude of sins, 00:43:23.10\00:43:26.07 but love covers all sins, and when we come... 00:43:26.10\00:43:29.80 Now, I'm so glad you brought this point up 00:43:29.84\00:43:31.41 because in order for you to be 00:43:31.44\00:43:33.07 able to be attractive to others, 00:43:33.11\00:43:35.78 we're not talking about physical beauty 00:43:35.81\00:43:37.71 but we're talking about Christian attraction. 00:43:37.75\00:43:41.25 You have to know how to love 00:43:41.28\00:43:43.22 and people hear love in your voice, 00:43:43.25\00:43:45.52 they see love in your action, 00:43:45.55\00:43:47.49 they see love in your body language. 00:43:47.52\00:43:49.59 My wife and I were in Australia a number of years ago, 00:43:49.62\00:43:53.29 and we were there, 00:43:53.33\00:43:55.30 she did a seminar for women 00:43:55.33\00:43:57.30 and it was tremendous first time 00:43:57.33\00:43:59.13 she did that step out of her comfort zone 00:43:59.17\00:44:00.87 and did a tremendous job 00:44:00.90\00:44:02.84 but included in that seminar for women, 00:44:02.87\00:44:07.51 young ladies teaching them about Christian principles, 00:44:07.54\00:44:10.71 there was a video 00:44:10.75\00:44:12.08 that she showed about how to communicate 00:44:12.11\00:44:14.32 and it was all about 00:44:14.35\00:44:15.68 the hidden language of the body, 00:44:15.72\00:44:17.39 how we communicate to people, 00:44:17.42\00:44:19.09 how when people talking to us, 00:44:19.12\00:44:21.22 how we communicate body language. 00:44:21.26\00:44:23.39 That's good. 00:44:23.43\00:44:24.76 The silent art of communication. 00:44:24.79\00:44:26.39 And so it was they were standing to the side 00:44:26.43\00:44:28.20 when somebody is talking to us whether they are like this, 00:44:28.23\00:44:31.20 you know, communication and it was a lady 00:44:31.23\00:44:33.27 that was talking about and I learned some things 00:44:33.30\00:44:35.20 from that even though I like, 00:44:35.24\00:44:37.27 even though I teach in seminars and relationship 00:44:37.31\00:44:40.94 as a relationship coach teaches some of those things. 00:44:40.98\00:44:44.65 It was important that 00:44:44.68\00:44:46.01 when you go to church on Sabbath, 00:44:46.05\00:44:48.18 there's this phrase we use every weekend, 00:44:48.22\00:44:50.22 matter of fact it's almost traditional 00:44:50.25\00:44:51.59 in many Adventist Church as we say, "Happy Sabbath." 00:44:51.62\00:44:55.76 Somebody once said, "What's so happy about it?" 00:44:55.79\00:44:59.29 You know, if we don't show happiness... 00:44:59.33\00:45:01.36 Yeah, yeah. 00:45:01.40\00:45:02.73 If we don't show happiness to one another, 00:45:02.76\00:45:05.83 if we don't let people know that they can come, 00:45:05.87\00:45:08.17 they don't have to be happy, 00:45:08.20\00:45:09.84 if they're not happy we can be happy for them 00:45:09.87\00:45:12.27 and bearing their burden. 00:45:12.31\00:45:13.64 We used to say that word and you'll finish it 00:45:13.68\00:45:15.01 'cause you're the one that came up with it 00:45:15.04\00:45:16.44 or maybe you got it from somebody else, 00:45:16.48\00:45:17.81 I don't know, but if you're happy, you notify... 00:45:17.85\00:45:20.32 Your face. 00:45:20.35\00:45:22.28 I think, now, I can't claim to be the originator of that, 00:45:22.32\00:45:27.06 but in fact it's a truism, 00:45:27.09\00:45:29.19 if you're happy, notify your face. 00:45:29.22\00:45:31.23 Let people know by your demeanor. 00:45:31.26\00:45:34.53 Don't just say you're happy, you know. 00:45:34.56\00:45:36.63 I said to somebody and we did this in the seminar 00:45:36.67\00:45:38.50 once I said, "Try to do this with a smile 00:45:38.53\00:45:40.50 and say to somebody, 00:45:40.54\00:45:41.87 'You know John, I really hate you."' 00:45:41.90\00:45:44.97 They wouldn't believe it. That makes you laugh. 00:45:45.01\00:45:46.34 I really hate you, I mean here's that with a smile 00:45:46.37\00:45:50.21 they wouldn't believe it, 00:45:50.25\00:45:51.58 he's just joking or try to see this with smile, 00:45:51.61\00:45:53.95 without a smile, I can't even do it right now. 00:45:53.98\00:45:57.29 With the most sourest frown you say, "I really love you." 00:45:57.32\00:46:02.86 The body in the words we say is so vitally important. 00:46:02.89\00:46:06.76 And you know, John, what I like about this topic, 00:46:06.80\00:46:08.30 it's a practical one, 00:46:08.33\00:46:09.86 we've dealt with a lot of doctrinal issues, 00:46:09.90\00:46:11.63 but the practicality of the conditions of discipleship 00:46:11.67\00:46:14.37 is very important. 00:46:14.40\00:46:15.97 Jesus says... 00:46:16.00\00:46:17.81 and hear children, one of the things 00:46:17.84\00:46:19.81 that really bothered the disciples 00:46:19.84\00:46:21.34 is that children were attracted to Jesus, 00:46:21.38\00:46:23.85 He said, "Don't forbid them, let them come to Me." 00:46:23.88\00:46:28.35 He had to have an attractive demeanor 00:46:28.38\00:46:31.25 in order for children to want to be around Him. 00:46:31.29\00:46:33.25 It was a break in the cultural perspective too 00:46:33.29\00:46:36.12 because they typically figured that that kids, 00:46:36.16\00:46:38.76 children have their place. 00:46:38.79\00:46:40.46 Right. 00:46:40.50\00:46:41.83 And they should be silent, they should be quiet 00:46:41.86\00:46:43.20 in the background and Jesus said, 00:46:43.23\00:46:44.90 "No, let them come." 00:46:44.93\00:46:47.44 And obviously then, Jesus was very approachable, 00:46:47.47\00:46:49.87 His demeanor was very open and loving and accepting. 00:46:49.90\00:46:52.87 And to have a friend the Bible says, 00:46:52.91\00:46:56.48 "One must first show themselves to be friendly." 00:46:56.51\00:47:01.25 When you go to a church and say, 00:47:01.28\00:47:02.62 "I don't have any friends." 00:47:02.65\00:47:04.79 It's like you must ask yourself the question, 00:47:04.82\00:47:07.02 "Are you friendly?" 00:47:07.06\00:47:08.92 We had a gal in our church years ago 00:47:08.96\00:47:11.99 and she approached another church member 00:47:12.03\00:47:15.13 and she said to him, he had, 00:47:15.16\00:47:18.17 they've been talking in Sabbath school 00:47:18.20\00:47:19.53 and he was painting a picture of how he viewed Christ 00:47:19.57\00:47:22.60 and she says, "I don't agree with you." 00:47:22.64\00:47:25.01 He says, "Well, at what point?' 00:47:25.04\00:47:26.74 She said, "Jesus never laughed, He was a man of sorrows." 00:47:26.78\00:47:32.05 So her picture of Christ was very much sorrowful always. 00:47:32.08\00:47:36.89 And He said, "I'm sorry, 00:47:36.92\00:47:38.89 but that's just not my view of Jesus." 00:47:38.92\00:47:41.62 Right. 00:47:41.66\00:47:42.99 And I think our view of Christ often will drive 00:47:43.02\00:47:45.66 how we treat other people too as Christians, 00:47:45.69\00:47:48.10 so as disciples we need to see what Jesus really was like 00:47:48.13\00:47:51.70 and then be like Him as He showed the disciples, 00:47:51.73\00:47:55.40 especially accepting of children 00:47:55.44\00:47:56.91 coming to Him and things. 00:47:56.94\00:47:58.31 You know that He wasn't solemn before children, 00:47:58.34\00:48:00.21 children don't respond to that. 00:48:00.24\00:48:01.91 No. 00:48:01.94\00:48:03.28 He was probably very happy joking, yeah. 00:48:03.31\00:48:06.15 Approachable and that's why... 00:48:06.18\00:48:09.88 I'll find a text in a moment here, 00:48:09.92\00:48:11.29 but, the other one I just alluded to 00:48:11.32\00:48:13.69 is Proverbs 18:24, 00:48:13.72\00:48:15.32 "One who has friends first show themselves 00:48:15.36\00:48:18.36 to be friendly." 00:48:18.39\00:48:19.73 Jesus had an approachable demeanor. 00:48:19.76\00:48:21.90 When it says a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, 00:48:21.93\00:48:25.57 it talked about what he went through for us, 00:48:25.60\00:48:28.60 He didn't have to be the one to be crucified, 00:48:28.64\00:48:32.64 but the sorrow and the sin of the world was laid on Him, 00:48:32.67\00:48:36.51 however, the Bible says, 00:48:36.54\00:48:41.25 "The joy of the Lord is my strength." 00:48:41.28\00:48:45.89 You cannot create me with the ability to laugh 00:48:45.92\00:48:49.92 and you as a creator never smile. 00:48:49.96\00:48:53.40 You know, we're not talking about giddy and insensitive 00:48:53.43\00:48:55.76 and losing your mind as a... 00:48:55.80\00:48:57.37 Yeah, joking and ingesting kind of thing... 00:48:57.40\00:48:59.17 Right, we are not talking about that. 00:48:59.20\00:49:00.54 Playful, playfulness too, to your interactions 00:49:00.57\00:49:02.97 with people too, I don't think that was beyond Christ at all. 00:49:03.00\00:49:06.27 And somewhere the Lord had to have some sense of humor, 00:49:06.31\00:49:09.58 look at Elijah when they were on Mount Carmel 00:49:09.61\00:49:12.15 and they were trying to get their God's attention, 00:49:12.18\00:49:13.95 He said, "Hey, maybe He's sleeping. 00:49:13.98\00:49:17.45 Maybe He's on a long journey. 00:49:17.49\00:49:18.82 Maybe He can hear you a little louder." 00:49:18.85\00:49:20.66 I mean, he was in essence mocking their God 00:49:20.69\00:49:24.89 because there was no real God that responded that way. 00:49:24.93\00:49:27.90 And there're the scriptures, God is a pleasant God. 00:49:27.93\00:49:29.50 Yeah. 00:49:29.53\00:49:30.87 Let's go through three others here. 00:49:30.90\00:49:32.77 I wish we had time to spend more time 00:49:32.80\00:49:35.27 to spent on each of these. 00:49:35.30\00:49:36.67 I might do in the seminar but we don't on this program. 00:49:36.71\00:49:39.21 Number two: A commitment to follow Jesus. 00:49:39.24\00:49:43.04 He's looking for a strong commitment 00:49:43.08\00:49:45.05 to follow Him, Luke 14:27, 00:49:45.08\00:49:48.62 "And anyone who does not carry his cross 00:49:48.65\00:49:50.42 and follow Me cannot be My disciple." 00:49:50.45\00:49:53.46 And then look in verse 33, "In the same way any of you 00:49:53.49\00:49:56.52 who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple." 00:49:56.56\00:50:00.63 But that's a pretty strong request, 00:50:00.66\00:50:03.83 the commitment isn't a mental commitment, 00:50:03.87\00:50:06.27 the commitment is with everything you've got, 00:50:06.30\00:50:08.70 you're giving everything up for Him. 00:50:08.74\00:50:12.67 And that's why I put commitment in a different category 00:50:12.71\00:50:17.31 as obedience. 00:50:17.35\00:50:18.68 That's right. 00:50:18.71\00:50:20.05 Because our following Christ begins with commitment. 00:50:20.08\00:50:22.55 If you haven't committed all to Him 00:50:22.58\00:50:24.12 at your beginning of your relationship with Jesus, 00:50:24.15\00:50:26.39 you're going to waver throughout. 00:50:26.42\00:50:28.69 We've got to know and count the cost, 00:50:28.72\00:50:30.76 what's the other text I'm talking about, 00:50:30.79\00:50:32.33 what a man who doesn't build having first counted the cost 00:50:32.36\00:50:37.03 to complete the project before he ever get started. 00:50:37.07\00:50:40.24 So you've got to go through that process to do. 00:50:40.27\00:50:42.64 Now Jesus also said in Luke 9:23, 00:50:42.67\00:50:44.77 "If anyone desires to come after Me, 00:50:44.81\00:50:46.44 let him deny himself, 00:50:46.47\00:50:48.34 take up his cross daily and follow Me." 00:50:48.38\00:50:51.78 Denial of oneself is... Well, that's a huge thing. 00:50:51.81\00:50:55.02 It's hard, it's tough to every day, 00:50:55.05\00:50:57.49 but He said daily, it's got to happen. 00:50:57.52\00:50:59.15 'Cause the human flesh 00:50:59.19\00:51:00.62 and the things that we've learned, 00:51:00.66\00:51:01.99 I mean you talked about the vices, 00:51:02.02\00:51:03.36 you came out of, I had a lot of vices I came out of, 00:51:03.39\00:51:05.26 and along the way the devil throws vices at you 00:51:05.29\00:51:07.63 just kind of, we live in this cacophony 00:51:07.66\00:51:09.53 of demonic suggestions every day, 00:51:09.56\00:51:12.13 the hell born dissonance 00:51:12.17\00:51:13.94 that just grabs our attention sometimes 00:51:13.97\00:51:16.17 and rocks our very committed to Christ. 00:51:16.20\00:51:19.31 We have to come to the point where we have to deny self 00:51:19.34\00:51:21.94 and flesh the flesh that we've had, you know, 00:51:21.98\00:51:24.31 growing up and I'm growing up, this leads us to the place 00:51:24.35\00:51:26.88 where we have to say, okay, no, no, 00:51:26.92\00:51:29.48 have you resisted unto death? 00:51:29.52\00:51:31.19 Right. 00:51:31.22\00:51:32.55 Have you resisted unto death as the Bible talks about 00:51:32.59\00:51:35.16 and many people haven't. 00:51:35.19\00:51:36.52 Yeah, yeah, I agree. 00:51:36.56\00:51:39.19 The next one, number three: 00:51:39.23\00:51:40.56 Is obedience to God and His Word. 00:51:40.60\00:51:44.50 John 8:31, "If you abide in My word, 00:51:44.53\00:51:46.50 you are My disciples indeed." 00:51:46.53\00:51:48.34 Very good point. 00:51:48.37\00:51:49.70 And that word abiding there is really a word connected 00:51:49.74\00:51:52.84 to following in the ways of Christ, 00:51:52.87\00:51:57.41 it's residing in Christ as you obey Him 00:51:57.45\00:51:59.81 and walk with Him. 00:51:59.85\00:52:01.38 And so you find over and over again, 00:52:01.42\00:52:03.32 Jesus is asking the disciples to follow His actions, 00:52:03.35\00:52:08.22 to obey His commands. 00:52:08.26\00:52:11.49 He wouldn't have given commandments 00:52:11.53\00:52:13.53 unless He didn't expect obedience. 00:52:13.56\00:52:16.36 Okay. 00:52:16.40\00:52:17.73 There would be no reason, you don't command anybody 00:52:17.77\00:52:19.10 to do anything unless you expect them to obey. 00:52:19.13\00:52:22.80 And let's remember, the disciple simply means 00:52:22.84\00:52:25.87 pupil or learner. 00:52:25.91\00:52:30.15 And so as a learner, as a pupil you have a master. 00:52:30.18\00:52:34.55 This is an important point, disciples have a master 00:52:34.58\00:52:38.25 and what disciple doesn't follow 00:52:38.29\00:52:40.49 the master's commands. 00:52:40.52\00:52:41.92 True. 00:52:41.96\00:52:43.29 It's just common sense and so Jesus does 00:52:43.32\00:52:45.76 as the condition of discipleship require 00:52:45.79\00:52:47.73 obedience to His ways. 00:52:47.76\00:52:49.93 You know, John, everything that we do in life 00:52:49.96\00:52:51.43 has a factor of obedience in a company, 00:52:51.47\00:52:54.20 you have rules and parameters, 00:52:54.24\00:52:55.74 and operational principles of a company. 00:52:55.77\00:52:57.51 And a country too, laws. 00:52:57.54\00:52:58.87 In the country we have laws, in the military we have laws, 00:52:58.91\00:53:02.74 you have a commander, you have the general, 00:53:02.78\00:53:04.61 you have the sergeant, you have the captain, 00:53:04.65\00:53:07.28 you have the colonel, 00:53:07.32\00:53:08.65 depending on what branch you're in, 00:53:08.68\00:53:10.09 there's always a level of command 00:53:10.12\00:53:12.12 and obedience to the strictest form 00:53:12.15\00:53:14.96 is in many cases a life or death matter 00:53:14.99\00:53:18.36 in the military. 00:53:18.39\00:53:19.73 You know when they say down, or they say, you know, 00:53:19.76\00:53:21.93 look to your left or watch your six, 00:53:21.96\00:53:25.00 you got to be.. you can't say, "Do I do that again today." 00:53:25.03\00:53:29.27 Let me think about it. Yeah. 00:53:29.30\00:53:30.77 You could, your life could be taken very easily, 00:53:30.81\00:53:33.21 so when we mention obedience, that's the word 00:53:33.24\00:53:35.21 that's often missing in Christianity. 00:53:35.24\00:53:36.91 Yeah. It's like a bad word. 00:53:36.95\00:53:38.38 It's gotten a bad rap. 00:53:38.41\00:53:39.75 Yeah, obedience, but a very good point. 00:53:39.78\00:53:42.02 And then number four, this is the last one, 00:53:42.05\00:53:43.82 faithful fruit bearing. 00:53:43.85\00:53:46.59 So a disciple, he loves God and people, 00:53:46.62\00:53:50.79 he's committed to following Jesus, 00:53:50.83\00:53:52.46 he's obeying Him and His word, and then he is taking it 00:53:52.49\00:53:55.83 to that next step of faithful fruit bearing 00:53:55.86\00:53:58.70 and it says here in John 15:8, 00:53:58.73\00:54:01.90 "By this My Father is glorified, 00:54:01.94\00:54:03.84 that you bear much fruit, so you will be My disciples." 00:54:03.87\00:54:08.48 So discipleship again 00:54:08.51\00:54:10.51 very much connected to bearing fruit. 00:54:10.55\00:54:13.25 Those that don't bear fruit, 00:54:13.28\00:54:14.62 in fact, I think you mentioned this 00:54:14.65\00:54:15.98 in the last program or two 00:54:16.02\00:54:17.35 where we talked about this fig tree 00:54:17.39\00:54:21.32 that was not bearing fruit and what did Jesus say to do? 00:54:21.36\00:54:23.99 Cut it down. Cut it down. 00:54:24.03\00:54:25.79 In fact, Jesus was walking by a fig tree 00:54:25.83\00:54:28.50 that didn't bear fruit and He cursed it 00:54:28.53\00:54:29.86 and it withered and died. 00:54:29.90\00:54:31.47 And so the example here is that what good is a tree 00:54:31.50\00:54:34.40 that is intended to bear fruit, if it bears no fruit 00:54:34.44\00:54:37.67 for the Kingdom of God and for His glory. 00:54:37.71\00:54:40.01 Now here's another principle of discipleship 00:54:40.04\00:54:41.81 which is kind of a hard thing and it's not a new principle 00:54:41.84\00:54:44.31 but bearing fruit is, is kind of along the same lines. 00:54:44.35\00:54:47.35 One of the hardest things to do 00:54:47.38\00:54:48.72 is you ask yourself the question, 00:54:48.75\00:54:50.49 why am I going through such difficulty 00:54:50.52\00:54:53.79 if my life is so successful as a leader, 00:54:53.82\00:54:56.36 as a discipler, as a servant, 00:54:56.39\00:55:00.60 why am I going through difficulty? 00:55:00.63\00:55:03.40 Why am I facing hardship? 00:55:03.43\00:55:06.63 I mean everything's that I'm doing 00:55:06.67\00:55:08.30 what I'm supposed to do at least 00:55:08.34\00:55:09.67 as far as I'm concerned, 00:55:09.70\00:55:11.17 the pruning process is something 00:55:11.21\00:55:12.77 that many Christians don't look forward to. 00:55:12.81\00:55:15.01 We tend to think that if a tree is not bearing fruit, 00:55:15.04\00:55:17.95 then you need to prune it and get it ready. 00:55:17.98\00:55:19.98 But the Bible gives a different concept, 00:55:20.02\00:55:22.75 John 15, and we're going to look at verse 2, 00:55:22.78\00:55:26.65 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit..." 00:55:26.69\00:55:30.06 as you just mentioned, "He takes away." 00:55:30.09\00:55:32.29 Because there's no fruit coming from it. 00:55:32.33\00:55:34.83 "And every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, 00:55:34.86\00:55:40.20 that it may bear more fruit." 00:55:40.24\00:55:42.94 So, why am I going through the pruning process? 00:55:42.97\00:55:47.38 And Ellen White points out the pruning process 00:55:47.41\00:55:51.05 is the very discipline in our lives 00:55:51.08\00:55:54.08 that we just don't welcome. 00:55:54.12\00:55:55.82 You know, we don't welcome the Lord 00:55:55.85\00:55:57.62 getting cut here or getting cut there. 00:55:57.65\00:56:00.09 It hurts. It hurts. 00:56:00.12\00:56:01.46 Yeah. 00:56:01.49\00:56:02.82 But the pruning is necessary and so, 00:56:02.86\00:56:04.19 I saw someone yesterday actually matter of fact, 00:56:04.23\00:56:07.00 the weather was conducive to that, 00:56:07.03\00:56:08.63 and I saw them outside with their, you know, 00:56:08.66\00:56:10.60 with their shears and they were cutting the trees 00:56:10.63\00:56:14.40 at a certain level, I thought, ah, man, it's warm weather, 00:56:14.44\00:56:16.84 they're getting ready for the change in seasons. 00:56:16.87\00:56:19.67 And so God does the same thing, our lives, 00:56:19.71\00:56:21.71 we have changing seasons, and the Lord knows 00:56:21.74\00:56:24.15 He has to prepare us for those changing seasons 00:56:24.18\00:56:26.48 and the only way to do it is by pruning us. 00:56:26.51\00:56:28.52 That's right. 00:56:28.55\00:56:29.88 And the fruit that happens as a result of that is twofold, 00:56:29.92\00:56:33.69 there's the fruit in our own lives 00:56:33.72\00:56:35.82 coming from the fruit of the spirit. 00:56:35.86\00:56:38.33 And then there is the fruit that results 00:56:38.36\00:56:39.96 from engaging in our spiritual gifts 00:56:40.00\00:56:42.86 to advance the kingdom of Christ, 00:56:42.90\00:56:44.50 the fruit of other people's lives. 00:56:44.53\00:56:46.57 One person said, and maybe I'm going to quote this right 00:56:46.60\00:56:49.00 but I'm gonna try my best. 00:56:49.04\00:56:54.34 "The fruit we give appears on other people's trees 00:56:54.38\00:56:59.38 something to that effect." 00:56:59.41\00:57:00.98 In other words, as we bear fruit, 00:57:01.02\00:57:02.58 as we share our faith, means, 00:57:02.62\00:57:04.69 we encourage others as we disciple others. 00:57:04.72\00:57:07.32 The fruit that we will see happen 00:57:07.36\00:57:08.69 will appear on other people's trees. 00:57:08.72\00:57:11.59 And I think, and it also appears 00:57:11.63\00:57:13.50 on our trees of course, 00:57:13.53\00:57:14.86 but I think there is something to be said about that, 00:57:14.90\00:57:16.60 so fruit in that our own lives and then fruit in that 00:57:16.63\00:57:20.07 the lives of others are transformed 00:57:20.10\00:57:22.47 by the Christ that they have now accepted 00:57:22.50\00:57:24.47 because of our testimony. 00:57:24.51\00:57:26.57 And so this topic of discipleship conditions 00:57:26.61\00:57:29.34 are very important. 00:57:29.38\00:57:30.81 If you were to give us a preview of 00:57:30.85\00:57:32.65 what we're going to talk about 00:57:32.68\00:57:34.02 in some of the upcoming problems, 00:57:34.05\00:57:35.38 what would it be? 00:57:35.42\00:57:36.75 I mean about this particular subject. 00:57:36.79\00:57:38.12 We'll talk about couple of other things 00:57:38.15\00:57:39.49 relating to discipleship. 00:57:39.52\00:57:40.96 Jesus said some profound words to the woman at the well. 00:57:40.99\00:57:43.83 The true worshippers 00:57:43.86\00:57:45.46 will worship in spirit and truth. 00:57:45.49\00:57:46.83 We'll see how that applies to discipleship. 00:57:46.86\00:57:48.33 Wow, well, you know, here at House Call 00:57:48.36\00:57:50.30 we surely believe that the Lord is going to call each of us, 00:57:50.33\00:57:54.24 there's a call coming to our lives 00:57:54.27\00:57:55.70 and the call to discipleship is one of the highest. 00:57:55.74\00:57:59.11 May you answer that call, and God bless you too, 00:57:59.14\00:58:01.71 we'll see you again. 00:58:01.74\00:58:03.08
