He is talking
about flesh and spirit.

Those who are in
flesh, in other words

individual being a spirit.

to a time of the flood.

those who were spirit in prison

now what Jesus has done for us

that he is choosing

because in chapter 4 nonetheless
the same kind of passage here

right through the
beginning of chapter 4.

We've read this in verse 6,

the gospel was preached

according to men in the flesh,

In other words all of us

have fallen short
of the glory of God.

We all need God's
transformative power,

His spirit to change us
and make us alive in Christ.

And so those that
are preached to are dead,

and they in many
respects are spirits,

dead spirits who are in prison,

in prison or in
captivity to what?

To sin. To sin.

So Peter is using
some interesting language

but what he's doing,

he's trying to be little
more I guess colorful to explain

that those who are in
sin are truly spirits,

dead spirits who are
in captivity to the enemy.

The gospel needs to
be preached to them.

Now some would say, well, no,
00:07:11.14\00:07:12.71
it sure looks like
these spirits are already dead

and they are in some
kind of purgatory of some type

and that's where Jesus
went and preached to them

during the crucifixion,
during the days that He was dead
00:07:22.97\00:07:25.62
and they heard Him preach.

Let me tell you,
that cannot mesh well

with the gospel elsewhere

because it says
that Jesus was in fact

in the grave
for those three days

and we read also
in the Bible that

when someone dies
the dead know nothing.
00:07:40.22\00:07:43.01
So He was not able
to do anything like that

nor did He see corruption
either during any time

of His crucifixion experience
or His life for that matter.

But if you want
to go little further,

I found this text It's
kind of interesting, John.

It's comes from Luke 9.

And I am reading
verses 59 and 60.

Luke is talking with Peter
here I think and it says that,

"And he said to another,
Follow me. But he said--"
00:08:13.65\00:08:16.71
No it's not Peter
actually it's someone
00:08:16.74\00:08:18.11
who is asking to follow him.
00:08:18.14\00:08:19.95
But he said "Lord, let me
first go and bury my father."
00:08:19.98\00:08:24.44
And Jesus said
to him in verse 60,
00:08:24.47\00:08:26.59
"Let the dead bury
their own dead." That's right.
00:08:26.62\00:08:31.70
"But you go and preach
the Kingdom of God." Right.
00:08:31.73\00:08:34.60
The emphasis Jesus had was is,
00:08:34.63\00:08:36.19
what's most important?
Preaching God's Kingdom.

That's what comes first.
00:08:39.18\00:08:41.12
But He uses this language,

"Let the dead bury
their own dead." Right.

And we find the
dead in two contexts here

even from Jesus' own words.

The dead first being
spiritually dead, right.
00:08:49.16\00:08:53.12
The dead secondly being
00:08:53.15\00:08:55.41
the one's that
have physically died.

And so we find this back
and forth throughout the Bible

and that's what we're finding in
the writings of Peter as well.

That's right and not only that

remember, when you read Peter

he said the same
spirit that quickened Christ,
00:09:07.11\00:09:11.63
when Christ died in the flesh,

the same spirit that
quickened Him to life

is the same spirit by
which the sermons were preached.

And when you find
here in Genesis 6,

and I'll read another text
here in just a moment here.

In Genesis 6, the
Bible says in verse 3,

"And the Lord said, My
spirit shall not strive

with man forever or shall
not always strive with man
00:09:34.38\00:09:37.90
for he indeed is flesh he had
his days shall be 120 years."

And so you find clearly here
00:09:43.90\00:09:46.33
that the spirit was
the one through Noah
00:09:46.36\00:09:50.93
who was preaching to those
00:09:50.96\00:09:52.33
who were dead in
trespasses and sin.

And so these were the ones,
00:09:54.43\00:09:55.89
these were the ones
whose spirits were in prison.

And when you say,
whose spirits were in prison?

We use the phrase
nowadays in a very loose--

we says, you know, my
spirits are so low today.

We're not saying that a
separate part of us is law.

We're not saying, boy,
you're in such depressed spirit.

We're talking about--

Our emotions,
our heart put down.

Exactly. Yeah.

We're talking about
the condition of one

who is dead in
trespasses and sin.

And that's what
the Lord talks about.

Remember His, His mission
as outlined in Isaiah 60,

I'm gonna go there and
read that very carefully

one of the things that the
Bible mentions very clearly

here in Isaiah 60, Isaiah 61.

It says, "The Spirit of
the Lord God is upon me."

The same spirit
that was upon the Lord
00:10:43.08\00:10:44.95
to bring Him
forth from the grave
00:10:44.98\00:10:46.90
the same spirit,
notice what it was to do.
00:10:46.93\00:10:49.51
"Because the
Lord has anointed me
00:10:49.54\00:10:51.69
to preach good
tidings to the poor,
00:10:51.72\00:10:53.73
He has sent me to
heal the brokenhearted,
00:10:53.76\00:10:56.28
to proclaim
liberty to the captives,

and the opening of the
prison to those who are bound."

Who are the ones in prison?

Those who are in this
prison of sin was the one

to whom the gospel was
preached in the days of Noah.

They're not
being preached to again
00:11:11.79\00:11:13.16
because they cannot,
they die once and that's it.
00:11:13.19\00:11:16.01
Hebrews 9:27, "It is
appointed unto men once to die,
00:11:16.04\00:11:20.89
but after that the
judgment." That's right.

There is no second thing around.

There are no spirits
hanging around saying,

oh, we didn't hear that sermon

and Jesus says,
"Don't worry about it

I am gonna die and come down
to preach to you the sermon."

No, when Jesus entered the grave

He was unconscious as
any human being would be.

He was in human form
dead until His resurrection.

And more than that
what you'll find here

in some of this language is

God's Spirit is driving
with man spirit. Exactly.

Even in Genesis 6 it says,

"The heart, the
thoughts of the heart

were only evil continually."
00:11:56.01\00:11:58.05
He's talking about
the condition of the heart

and when he does
that he's narrowing,

or focusing down on man spirit
spiritually deprived, right?

Or spiritually alive in Christ.

Nonetheless often the
Bible speaks of man as a spirit

and not to say a
separate soul but just a spirit.

And so when God is
speaking on a spiritual level

in regard to
the condition of man
00:12:23.12\00:12:24.70
as Peter is
connecting with here,

he is saying the Spirit of God

is driving with the
spirit of man in his heart.

He is saying, he is dead

but God wants to make
him spiritually alive in Him.

It's just the
language is little different.

Don't make a doctrine

just because the language Peter
is using is a little different.

And we find this language
used throughout the Bible

as we pointed out in
several places as well.

So I think the
struggle is sometimes, John,

that entire
doctrine are sometimes
00:12:52.03\00:12:54.37
made out of a one little text

where writer uses some colorful,
some interesting language

that can be
difficult to understand.

In fact Peter even mentioned
that about Paul. Right.

He says, Paul's
writings are very complicated.
00:13:06.32\00:13:09.36
They're very--sometimes
very difficult to understand
00:13:09.39\00:13:12.45
and it gave even
Peter a struggle sometimes
00:13:12.48\00:13:15.15
to understand his teaching.
00:13:15.18\00:13:16.55
And he says, "Some
people wrestled them
00:13:16.58\00:13:17.95
to their own destruction."
00:13:17.98\00:13:19.48
So you have to be
very, very careful
00:13:19.51\00:13:20.97
that you're not
including the text a gospel.

And John made a very important
point, I want to reiterate this.

Don't build a
doctrine on one text,

put the entire text together.

And then also you have to think

very carefully
and very illogically.

Are the men that died thousands
of years earlier in the flood,

where they waiting for a sermon
to be preached to them somewhere

when continually the
Bible said, They are dead,

they are dead, they are dead,
they are dead, they are dead."

And they died and was
buried with their fathers

and they died and
was buried in the grave,

and they died and
was buried, you know.

And the dead
know not of anything.

They are not waiting to sing,

"You know, we
didn't get that sermon."

Oh, but don't worry
about it, it's coming

die and bring the sermon down

completely illogical,

very lie that Satan taught

"You will not surely die."

That's the foundation upon which
that doctrine is established.

The doctrine that
you don't really die,

you are waiting and
but according to the Bible

as we just read in Hebrews 9,

"It's appointed
unto men once to die

and after that the
judgment" Hebrews 9:27.

So let's not-- in a nutshell,

the same spirit
that anointed Jesus,

the same spirit that
quickened Him from the dead

is the same spirit through
which Noah preached to those

who were in the
prison house of sin.

That's all that simply saying.

And as Jesus said,
He's come to set at liberty

those who were bound,
those who were in prison

and that's exactly the
terminology used there.

Sinful men in the
prison house of sin,

the Holy Spirit
preached to them in Noah's day,

That was the faultiness of it,
