But it is a book
that is highly symbolic.

She is absolutely correct.

But at the same time I believe
there are literal aspects

of that book that
we cannot dismiss.

And although the
Bible itself doesn't provide

a specific
prescription or doesn't come up

as it comes up to a
symbolic or even literal area

of Revelation doesn't
tell you which is which.

You have to use some guidelines.

You have to use
some general guidelines

for studying prophecy.

And one of those big
guidelines is that we tend

to just stick to it
as closely as possible.

you're looking at an aspect

the literal to the symbolic,

symbolic is always interpreted

ways we do that is Babylon

again, John, in Revelation.

And Babylon we know as we read
that is full of so many things

that it can't
pertain to literal Babylon.

In other words, where
Babylon exist today because

there is no Babylon
as we knew it back when.

But if you go in the
Bible into the Old Testament,

you start to look and
explore Babylon of old.

You'll find in many
ways the type of city it was.

What happened in that city?

The different stories
that surround that city

with regard to Daniel,
his three friends and others,

the Jews overall if
that were in Babylon

during their time of captivity,
you'll be able to understand

what he is talking
about in Revelation

when he speaks of Babylon.

So that's just one example

But that's kind of an
overarching general rule

of how you approach,

books of the Bible.

also want to do is you want

to look of the whole context,
read the entire account,

read the entire story.

For example, the Bible
will make it very, very clear

in the few verses whether or not

it's symbolical or literal.

If you read about a
woman clothed with the son.

You know, that
woman don't wear the son.

Yes, that's right.
I mean it's obvious.

If you read about
lamb standing on Mount Zion
00:05:20.30\00:05:23.98
with seven horns and seven eyes,
00:05:24.01\00:05:25.61
you know, that lambs
don't have seven horns,
00:05:25.64\00:05:27.45
you know, it
doesn't have seven eyes.
00:05:27.48\00:05:28.80
Right. So literally you have
00:05:28.83\00:05:30.14
to find out what the
horns are, what the lamb is.
00:05:30.17\00:05:33.20
But if you find that, you see,

a beast rising above of the sea,

having seven
heads, and ten horns.

You're not going to say, Mommy,

I saw that beast of
Revelation yesterday

having seven
heads and ten horns.

You know, right
away, that's symbolic.

You'll find out that a
war broke out in heaven,

well, that was a literal war.
00:05:49.24\00:05:50.86
There was a war in heaven.

And Satan did not prevail,
he was cast to the earth.

And Isaiah gives
the account of that.

One of the
principles they also want to use

that whenever a symbol is used

and this is so
vitally important.

you look to the Bible,

One of the dangers
is, to read something

in the scriptures and
all of a sudden because

of what another person
wrote in antiquity or history,

you'll say, well, I adopt
the principle or the teaching

that Josephus had on
this particular passage

or that the theologians during
00:06:25.93\00:06:28.18
the 17th century
or the Dark Ages.
00:06:28.21\00:06:30.05
They said that this meant that.

So therefore, I
side with their view.

That's a dangerous
thing unless the symbols
00:06:34.37\00:06:36.60
are defined by scripture.

You don't just pick
the person you side with.

Yeah. Because people will say,

well I like Hal Lindsey's view,

you know let the Bible be
the first line of defense.

doesn't define it,

then you've got
to make an educated,

educated guess which means
you got to educate yourself

and find out what the other
contemporary writers have said.

there is no information on it,

it's yet to be understood,

could happen literally.

if you read in Revelation.

"I saw four angels."

Ah, this is not
literal but symbolic.

"I saw four angels standing at
the four corners of the earth."
00:07:23.22\00:07:26.67
You go early in the Bible
when it talks about the angels,

the Bible talks about
angels as being messengers
00:07:30.12\00:07:33.03
but then again, are
there literal angels.
00:07:33.06\00:07:35.92
Of course, when it says
the four corners of the earth,

it means north,
east, south and west.
00:07:38.72\00:07:40.26
Simply symbolically meaning
covering the entire world.

Another example you'll
find, when you talk about,

"I saw when the seals were open

and the lamb
open one of the seals.

And I heard one of the
four living creatures."

So you'll being to see
well that sounds symbolic.

When it comes to the
messages of the churches.

The seven
churches, was there Ephesus,

a church of

the history of that area

and that church and
you'll say well, here is what,

here was the outstanding
characteristic of Ephesus.

It was a progressive church.

It was a church that was pure.

Here was the outstanding
characteristic of Philadelphia,
00:08:17.60\00:08:20.55
the church of brotherly love.
00:08:20.58\00:08:23.00
And so you begin
to see that the Lord
00:08:23.03\00:08:24.39
uses these churches as examples,
but then that's a nutshell.
00:08:24.42\00:08:28.12
You know, and
the other to though
00:08:28.15\00:08:29.34
as you look at some of
these like in Revelation 8.

You know, talking about
00:08:32.26\00:08:34.74
just to use a verse, verse 7,

"The first angels sound
in hail and fire followed,
00:08:36.23\00:08:39.12
mingled with blood, and
they were thrown to the earth.
00:08:39.15\00:08:41.06
And a third of the
trees were burned up,
00:08:41.09\00:08:42.87
and all green
grass is burned up."
00:08:42.90\00:08:44.32
I mean it could
be that some of those
00:08:44.35\00:08:45.99
in that scripture are
symbolic and some art.

Because the earth
you can't say well earth-

-what is that symbolic of.

Well, is that just wilderness
because we interpret earth

somewhere else to be wilderness

or is that mean
really the earth.

You know, so in
this way, in this respect

you can say were
thrown to the earth.

It's probably
meaning the literal earth.

It's talking about the
earthly suffers this experience.

or is that lots of people

It looks like it's a literal
sea but the blood very well

could be symbolic
because the sea turns red.

entire sea full of blood.

that was helpful for me,

when John was seeing, was given

this book to write down.

He was seeing the
symbols he wrote down.

He wasn't seeing
the actual events

and interpreting
them as he wrote.

You know, what I'm saying.

Right. So he was seeing a beast.

He was seeing
it has seven horns,
00:10:03.03\00:10:04.67
it had, it had ten
horns, it had seven heads

and all these things.

He wrote down what he saw.

So put yourself in
the mind and the heart

of what John was seeing.

Oh, yeah. John
wasnot seeing helicopters.

No. John was
seeing giant scorpions

and he described
exactly what he saw.

So also be careful of
when someone tries to tell you

what exactly John saw.

You know, what we
read is what John saw.

Right and because
that's what he wrote down.

He wrote down
what God showed him.

yourself is can this happen

that He is going
to throw down fire

And it happened
the very next day.

The Lord threw hail and
fire on the land of Egypt

or what about the blood.

Well, you go to
Act 2:17 it says,

"As you come to
pass in the last days

there will be signs
in the heavens above

and in the earth,
blood in the earth."

So you have signs in heaven,
you have blood in the earth.

And you begin to pull
all these things together.

Can there be blood in the earth.

Can the sea turn to blood?

Can grass be burned up?

Well, all these
things a clearly symbolic.

But then you go to Revelation 9

and this is where it shows
you right away it's a symbol.

"And the fifth angel
sounded and I saw a star fallen

from heaven and to the earth.

And to him was given the
key to the bottomless pit."

Right away it
calls the star him.

Well, you clearly know that he
is talking about a personality.

He is talking
about someone there.

And right away
anybody who studies the Bible

can tell right away the
star that fell from heaven

to the earth is Satan,
Lucifer, the morning star.

said, "I saw Satan

lightening fall from heaven."

The Bible interpreting itself.

But the one caution
we must give you is--

don't try to come up with
things that are not supported

by scripture or when challenged

cannot be proven by scripture.

Because then you're giving
it a private interpretation.

Yeah and that's what
happening in our world today.

that are just so far off based

that they're coming up with like
four second comings of Christ.

up of people snatched away

here, seven year tribulations

and it's just really
anyway so many out there.

at these seven
years of tribulation,

of this rapture
theory how God's church

is raptured and then there will

where the antichrist will

the prophetic 490 year period

years that final week.
