" 00:00:57.75\00:01:01.39 Then I asked them "How was breakfast? " 00:01:01.59\00:01:03.39 And they said? "Yes! " 00:01:03.79\00:01:06.09 Yes! We thank Melody and her crew. 00:01:06.29\00:01:08.06 We've been fed physically this morning. 00:01:08.26\00:01:10.17 We're looking forward to being fed spiritually all day today, 00:01:10.37\00:01:13.67 aren't we? Amen! This morning I have the privilege 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.27 of introducing my dear wife Jill. 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.31 She's going to be the speaker for this hour. 00:01:19.51\00:01:21.88 And I have to say I'm very blessed to be married to her. 00:01:22.28\00:01:24.95 We've been married... we just passed our 00:01:25.35\00:01:26.98 17th wedding anniversary just last week. 00:01:27.18\00:01:30.82 So I am so blessed. 00:01:31.02\00:01:32.35 She's a woman of the Word. She loves the Lord, 00:01:32.55\00:01:34.92 and as you see Jill up front it's who she is also at home. 00:01:35.12\00:01:39.23 She loves people; she loves studying the Word of God. 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.16 I don't know... how many of you watch Sabbath School Panel? 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.13 Quite a few of you? OK. 00:01:45.33\00:01:46.94 Well, those that are on the panel: they study very hard 00:01:47.34\00:01:50.24 and Jill is one of those. 00:01:50.44\00:01:51.77 She loves studying the Word of God. 00:01:51.81\00:01:53.17 She'll spend the weekend just studying and immersed. 00:01:53.58\00:01:56.18 She's like: "Greg, guess what? Wow! This is amazing. " 00:01:56.38\00:01:59.41 She's telling me all these neat tidbits. 00:01:59.61\00:02:01.28 But the Word of God feeds her. 00:02:01.48\00:02:03.15 And I just pray today that the Word of God feeds you 00:02:03.55\00:02:05.52 as well. You know, you can listen to the Word 00:02:05.72\00:02:07.76 but make it part of you, right? That's the key. 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.46 Today she's going to be sharing When God Is Silent. 00:02:10.86\00:02:14.13 But before she comes we're going to be blessed by 00:02:14.43\00:02:16.16 a beautiful song by Celestine Barry-Dickens. 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.13 And it's entitled Were It Not For Grace. 00:02:19.33\00:02:22.47 And accompanying on the piano is Farrah Barry, her daughter. 00:02:22.67\00:02:26.34 Time measured out my days... 00:02:55.34\00:03:00.21 life carried me along. 00:03:02.24\00:03:07.32 In my soul I yearned 00:03:09.98\00:03:13.99 to follow God 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.06 but knew I'd never be 00:03:17.46\00:03:21.73 so strong. 00:03:21.93\00:03:23.70 I looked hard at this world 00:03:24.20\00:03:27.54 to learn how heaven 00:03:28.10\00:03:31.37 could be gained 00:03:31.87\00:03:35.91 Just to end where I began: 00:03:37.15\00:03:41.88 where human effort 00:03:42.28\00:03:45.22 is all in vain. 00:03:46.02\00:03:50.73 Were it not for grace 00:03:53.03\00:03:59.00 I can tell you where 00:04:01.07\00:04:05.17 I'd be: 00:04:05.37\00:04:07.91 Wand'ring down some pointless road 00:04:08.11\00:04:12.61 to nowhere 00:04:12.91\00:04:15.18 with my salvation up to me. 00:04:15.68\00:04:21.49 I know how that would go... 00:04:21.99\00:04:26.63 the battles I would face 00:04:29.03\00:04:35.00 Forever running 00:04:36.54\00:04:39.31 but losing the race 00:04:39.71\00:04:43.38 were it not for grace. 00:04:43.91\00:04:49.55 So here is all my praise 00:04:51.69\00:04:55.82 expressed with all my heart 00:04:58.33\00:05:03.06 Offered to the Friend 00:05:05.70\00:05:09.07 who took my place 00:05:09.27\00:05:12.67 and ran a course I could not even start. 00:05:12.87\00:05:18.85 And when He saw in full 00:05:19.25\00:05:23.49 just how much His love 00:05:23.89\00:05:27.46 would cost 00:05:27.66\00:05:31.83 He still went the final mile 00:05:32.66\00:05:36.77 between me and heaven 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.80 so I would not be lost! 00:05:40.00\00:05:44.71 Were it not 00:05:47.54\00:05:49.54 for grace 00:05:49.74\00:05:54.85 I can tell you where 00:05:55.62\00:05:59.19 I'd be: 00:05:59.39\00:06:01.56 wand'ring down some pointless road 00:06:02.06\00:06:06.46 to nowhere 00:06:06.66\00:06:09.06 with my salvation up to me. 00:06:09.36\00:06:15.27 I know how that would go... 00:06:15.67\00:06:20.74 the battles I would face. 00:06:22.44\00:06:28.38 Forever running 00:06:29.58\00:06:32.42 but losing the race 00:06:32.82\00:06:36.46 were it not 00:06:36.93\00:06:38.56 for grace... 00:06:38.76\00:06:43.87 forever running 00:06:44.57\00:06:47.50 but losing the race 00:06:47.94\00:06:51.77 were it not 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.84 for 00:06:55.58\00:06:57.61 grace. 00:06:58.01\00:07:03.95 Amen! Thank you so much Celestine and Farrah. 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.73 Where would we be without the grace of God? 00:07:12.93\00:07:16.33 Were it not for grace. Good morning! 00:07:17.10\00:07:20.17 Good morning. You all rest well? 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.00 Did my husband Greg just ask you that? 00:07:23.20\00:07:25.71 We think alike. After 17 years of marriage 00:07:27.11\00:07:30.08 you start to think alike, right? 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.08 The message this morning 00:07:32.58\00:07:34.85 is entitled When God Is Silent. 00:07:35.05\00:07:39.29 Not If God Is Silent 00:07:39.49\00:07:42.56 because if you live long enough 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.66 and you experience life 00:07:45.86\00:07:48.60 you will experience at some point or another 00:07:48.80\00:07:52.43 the silence of God. 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.30 My cell phone here is my trusty companion. 00:07:56.20\00:07:59.74 I told you last night - I think it was last night - 00:07:59.94\00:08:01.74 that I'm always with my phone. So I thought I'd better 00:08:01.94\00:08:03.98 bring it up with me here today. 00:08:04.18\00:08:05.78 This phone... I am guilty of... sometimes in meetings 00:08:06.18\00:08:11.99 looking at it. I might be in a meeting 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.69 and all of a sudden my boss calls... Danny calls. 00:08:14.89\00:08:17.13 "Oh, excuse me... I need to get the phone. " 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.43 You're distracted, right? Have you ever talked to someone 00:08:19.63\00:08:22.23 and you're visiting with them 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.50 and instead of them focused like this gentleman right here 00:08:24.90\00:08:27.94 looking you in the eye, paying attention 00:08:28.14\00:08:30.31 they're: "Oh yeah... uh-huh... uh-huh. " 00:08:30.51\00:08:34.18 Does that bother you? Yes! 00:08:34.64\00:08:36.81 You feel like there's no sort of connection, right? 00:08:37.01\00:08:41.08 God desires - He has always desired - 00:08:41.88\00:08:45.35 to be in connection with us as His people. 00:08:45.55\00:08:49.46 Think about Adam and Eve. All the way in the beginning 00:08:49.66\00:08:52.09 back in Genesis God created them 00:08:52.29\00:08:55.63 to live in connection with Him. 00:08:55.83\00:08:59.20 What happened every evening in the cool of the day? 00:08:59.40\00:09:03.44 God came and He talked with them. 00:09:03.84\00:09:06.98 But we know that sin entered this world and sin created 00:09:07.18\00:09:10.75 a disconnect. Sin broke that connection 00:09:10.95\00:09:14.88 between us and the Father. 00:09:15.08\00:09:17.69 All throughout the Bible we see this incredible promise 00:09:18.19\00:09:22.16 that God wants to dwell with us... His people. 00:09:22.36\00:09:26.73 He wants to establish - re-establish - that connection 00:09:26.93\00:09:31.53 with us. Exodus 25 verse 8. The Israelites 00:09:31.73\00:09:34.97 He said: "Let them make Me a sanctuary 00:09:35.17\00:09:38.94 that I may... " What's that word? 00:09:39.14\00:09:40.84 Dwell. "dwell among them. " 00:09:41.04\00:09:42.91 You go over a couple more chapters: Exodus 29 verse 46. 00:09:43.31\00:09:47.25 "They shall know that I am the Lord their God 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.49 who brought them out of the land of Egypt 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.39 that I may dwell among them. " 00:09:52.59\00:09:55.92 I Kings 6 verse 13: 00:09:56.32\00:09:58.56 "I will dwell among the sons of Israel 00:09:59.36\00:10:03.06 and will not forsake My people Israel. " 00:10:03.26\00:10:06.90 Zechariah 2 verse 10... I love this scripture: 00:10:07.10\00:10:10.14 "Sing for joy, O daughter of Zion 00:10:10.34\00:10:13.54 for I am coming and I will dwell in your midst. " 00:10:13.74\00:10:18.98 God has always wanted to dwell with us as His people! 00:10:19.18\00:10:23.85 It transfers over into the New Testament. 00:10:24.25\00:10:26.45 John chapter 1 verse 14: "And the Word was made flesh 00:10:26.65\00:10:32.56 and dwelt among us. As we beheld His glory 00:10:32.76\00:10:36.83 as of the only begotten from the Father 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.93 full of grace and truth. " 00:10:40.14\00:10:41.64 Now remember, all the way back at the beginning 00:10:41.84\00:10:43.74 in Genesis God had wanted that connection with His people. 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.04 And all throughout Scripture - the Old Testament 00:10:48.24\00:10:51.75 into the New Testament - we see God desiring 00:10:51.95\00:10:55.18 to dwell with His people. 00:10:55.38\00:10:57.55 We get all the way to the last book of the Bible: 00:10:57.75\00:11:00.69 Revelation chapter 21 and verse 3. 00:11:01.09\00:11:04.79 "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 00:11:05.39\00:11:07.90 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men 00:11:08.10\00:11:13.13 and He will dwell with them. 00:11:13.34\00:11:16.64 And they shall be His people and God will be among them. ' " 00:11:16.84\00:11:21.21 So from the beginning before Eden was lost 00:11:21.41\00:11:24.61 God wanted to dwell with His people. 00:11:24.81\00:11:26.88 And all throughout history He still desires 00:11:27.28\00:11:31.09 a connection with us as His people. 00:11:31.29\00:11:34.69 And in Eden restored God will dwell with us again. 00:11:35.09\00:11:40.90 God has always had a people with whom He had a special 00:11:41.30\00:11:44.10 relationship. Think about Enoch. 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.53 He walked with God so closely that what happened? 00:11:46.94\00:11:49.77 God "took" him. 00:11:50.17\00:11:51.71 Think about Abraham being called out of the land of the Chaldees 00:11:52.11\00:11:56.24 to a land that he didn't even know where he was going. 00:11:56.95\00:12:00.68 Why? Because God wanted to establish a special relationship 00:12:01.25\00:12:06.32 with Abraham and by extension his descendants. 00:12:06.72\00:12:11.06 God has always desired relationships with His people. 00:12:11.46\00:12:14.40 But what if you can't find Him? 00:12:14.80\00:12:16.93 What if you can't feel His presence? 00:12:17.90\00:12:21.24 What if you can't sense His favor? 00:12:21.84\00:12:25.11 What happens then? 00:12:25.51\00:12:26.84 Let's pray. 00:12:27.04\00:12:28.38 Father, we come before You just now. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.91 I am nothing, 00:12:31.41\00:12:34.35 and I ask right now for a coal from off Your altar. 00:12:34.55\00:12:38.35 I pray that Jesus would be lifted up and seen 00:12:38.75\00:12:42.52 and glorified here today. That Your Word 00:12:42.72\00:12:47.20 and Your Spirit would go forward with power. 00:12:47.40\00:12:51.40 And we thank you in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:12:51.60\00:12:55.60 Greg and I were in Phoenix, Arizona 00:12:56.00\00:12:57.97 just about a year and a half ago. 00:12:58.17\00:12:59.51 3ABN was doing evangelistic meetings from Phoenix 00:12:59.81\00:13:03.24 and we brought our trucks and did a live broadcast. 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.85 After church I was kind of at the back of the church 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.99 and a lady came up and approached me. 00:13:11.19\00:13:13.02 She said: "Hey Jill, I want to talk to you. " 00:13:13.22\00:13:15.02 And I said: "Oh, great! " 'cause I love to meet people. 00:13:15.22\00:13:19.06 And I love to meet people especially who are part 00:13:19.26\00:13:21.96 of the 3ABN family. 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.00 And so I said: "Oh, that's wonderful. " 00:13:24.50\00:13:25.93 And she said: "I read an article that you wrote 00:13:26.13\00:13:28.30 in the Adventist Review. " 00:13:28.50\00:13:30.34 She said: "It was about your journey with infertility. " 00:13:30.74\00:13:34.54 And as soon as she said that my little antennas went up 00:13:35.04\00:13:38.05 because... I'm going to tell you a little secret today. 00:13:38.55\00:13:41.38 When you choose to be open with people 00:13:42.08\00:13:46.29 about what goes on in your life 00:13:46.69\00:13:49.06 it gives people the opportunity 00:13:49.46\00:13:52.89 to speak into your life. Is that not true? 00:13:53.09\00:13:56.20 If you're open then other people can be open back with you. 00:13:56.40\00:13:59.87 Now this is a double-edged sword 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.17 because there are many people... 00:14:03.57\00:14:05.17 Greg and I have been very open about our journey 00:14:05.37\00:14:06.91 with infertility. There are many people 00:14:07.11\00:14:09.78 that would come up and say: "Oh, we're praying for you" 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.41 or "Have you considered adoption? " 00:14:12.61\00:14:14.18 or "Maybe you should consider this certain thing. " 00:14:14.38\00:14:16.62 Which is wonderful. We love to hear suggestions and ideas 00:14:17.29\00:14:20.56 and thoughts from people. 00:14:20.76\00:14:22.09 But there are certain people who maybe take that a little bit 00:14:22.36\00:14:26.39 farther. I received a phone call in the office one day 00:14:26.59\00:14:29.96 and I just want you all to know I'm just sharing this with you 00:14:30.17\00:14:32.40 right here in this group. We don't want anything to go out 00:14:32.60\00:14:35.47 on air about this or anything like that. So... 00:14:35.67\00:14:37.41 this is a private thing that I'm sharing with you right now. 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.88 So just so you know: don't really make a big issue 00:14:41.08\00:14:43.68 out of this, OK? This is just between us right here. 00:14:43.88\00:14:46.31 So this lady called me, and I won't tell you the city 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.28 but it was from a large metropolitan city in the US. 00:14:49.48\00:14:53.29 And she called and she said: "Jill, I understand 00:14:53.49\00:14:56.29 you don't have kids. " And I said: "Yes ma'am that's right. " 00:14:56.49\00:14:58.69 She said: "Well I want you to know 00:14:59.09\00:15:00.60 if you make my recipe for beef stew... " 00:15:00.80\00:15:05.33 "you will have a baby. " 00:15:08.27\00:15:09.60 Now I just want you all to know I'm a vegetarian. 00:15:10.71\00:15:12.87 I have never eaten meat in my life. 00:15:13.88\00:15:15.94 I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it's just my 00:15:16.14\00:15:17.91 personal choice. And I thought: "Well, bless her heart. 00:15:18.11\00:15:21.58 It's very kind. " So she said: "I'm giving you the recipe. " 00:15:21.78\00:15:25.12 I said: "Yes ma'am... I will write it down. " 00:15:25.52\00:15:27.29 So I'm taking notes. Two pounds of beef and so many onions 00:15:27.76\00:15:31.09 and so much... She's giving me the recipe. 00:15:31.29\00:15:33.60 I'm writing it down. 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.13 And she said: "Are you writing this down? " 00:15:35.70\00:15:37.13 And I said: "Yes, I am. " 00:15:37.33\00:15:38.67 And then she said: "Well I am going to be watching on 3ABN 00:15:39.30\00:15:43.07 and if in three months you don't start to develop a little tummy 00:15:43.47\00:15:47.24 I'm coming to 3ABN and I will cook beef stew for you. " 00:15:48.31\00:15:51.78 So when this lady in Phoenix 00:15:54.22\00:15:56.89 said: "I read your article about your journey with infertility" 00:15:57.09\00:16:00.82 I thought: "Please, God... not beef stew! " 00:16:01.02\00:16:03.22 "I'm just... I'm just not ready to deal with beef stew 00:16:04.49\00:16:07.06 at the moment, you know? " 00:16:07.26\00:16:08.60 But that was not at all what she had in mind. 00:16:08.63\00:16:11.70 She said: "I want to share with you my own journey. " 00:16:11.90\00:16:16.00 And she told me about she and her husband. 00:16:16.40\00:16:18.31 Married. Tried for kids for 10 years. 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.04 That's a long time. She said that they couldn't. 00:16:21.24\00:16:24.55 They decided to adopt... which is a beautiful thing. 00:16:24.75\00:16:27.88 She said they decided on a foreign adoption 00:16:28.62\00:16:31.45 and they paid a great deal of money 00:16:31.85\00:16:35.62 to do this foreign adoption. 00:16:36.19\00:16:37.83 They were supposed to get 2 little girls. 00:16:38.03\00:16:40.03 They named them. 00:16:40.43\00:16:42.26 They got their pictures. 00:16:42.66\00:16:44.43 They were due to get the girls very soon. 00:16:44.63\00:16:47.67 And then she said: "We got the news 00:16:49.44\00:16:52.64 that the girls who were supposed to be ours 00:16:53.04\00:16:56.21 had been sold in the sex traffic trade. " 00:16:57.05\00:17:02.72 She said: "Jill, every day 00:17:03.49\00:17:06.72 I live with the knowledge 00:17:06.92\00:17:09.99 that those pictures on the fridge 00:17:10.39\00:17:12.53 that were supposed to be my girls 00:17:12.93\00:17:15.16 and they're not. And not only that 00:17:15.36\00:17:18.53 they might be dead today, Jill. It's been several years. 00:17:18.73\00:17:21.70 Or even worse, we don't know what's going on with them. 00:17:22.10\00:17:27.08 But if you cry out to God 00:17:28.21\00:17:31.05 and it appears that He is silent... " 00:17:31.45\00:17:35.05 The children of Israel experienced the silence of God. 00:17:35.25\00:17:39.05 Turn with me to Exodus. Exodus chapter 1. 00:17:39.25\00:17:43.09 Exodus chapter 1 verse 7 describes the supernatural 00:17:44.76\00:17:50.27 multiplication of the children of Israel. 00:17:50.47\00:17:54.50 Exodus 1:7: "But the children of Israel 00:17:54.70\00:17:57.41 were fruitful and increased abundantly 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.64 multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty. 00:18:00.84\00:18:04.71 And the land was filled with them. " 00:18:04.91\00:18:07.92 So you see all those verbs there? 00:18:08.12\00:18:09.52 They were fruitful, they increased, 00:18:09.92\00:18:11.75 they multiplied, they grew. 00:18:11.95\00:18:13.76 "And the land was filled with them. " 00:18:13.96\00:18:16.16 But then a new king came up and he didn't really know about 00:18:16.36\00:18:20.06 Joseph and maybe he didn't really like Joseph. 00:18:20.26\00:18:23.40 And maybe he really didn't like the way that the children of 00:18:23.60\00:18:26.57 Israel were multiplying. 00:18:26.77\00:18:29.00 And so he forced them to become slaves. 00:18:30.04\00:18:34.08 They were forced to do service in the field to make bricks. 00:18:34.81\00:18:39.05 And when that didn't work so well 00:18:39.45\00:18:41.48 he instituted a new law that the midwives 00:18:41.68\00:18:44.92 were supposed to kill the firstborn... the new baby boys. 00:18:45.12\00:18:50.66 Were supposed to kill all newborn baby boys. 00:18:50.86\00:18:55.16 They were in 400 years of slavery and bondage. 00:18:57.00\00:19:01.77 God had promised to deliver them 00:19:02.17\00:19:03.81 and yet for 400 years 00:19:04.01\00:19:07.34 it appeared as if God was silent. 00:19:07.74\00:19:11.15 Now a side note. It's interesting to me 00:19:11.35\00:19:13.31 400 years is kind of significant in the Bible. 00:19:13.52\00:19:15.85 We have 400 years of slavery. 00:19:16.05\00:19:17.92 400 years of the times of the judges. 00:19:18.32\00:19:21.09 400 years of the times of the kings 00:19:21.49\00:19:24.33 and 400 years of the inter-Testamental period. 00:19:24.49\00:19:27.96 That's between the book of Malachi and Matthew 00:19:28.16\00:19:32.00 when Jesus comes on the scene. 00:19:32.20\00:19:33.64 So the end of the prophets to Matthew 00:19:33.84\00:19:36.91 is another 400 years. 00:19:37.11\00:19:39.94 I want to tell you today: when it seems God is silent 00:19:40.54\00:19:43.88 He is not absent. 00:19:44.28\00:19:46.58 When it seems He is silent He is not still. 00:19:46.98\00:19:50.42 When it seems He is silent He is not finished. 00:19:50.62\00:19:54.49 Job also experienced the silence of God. 00:19:54.89\00:19:58.69 Turn with me to Job... Job chapter 30. 00:19:58.89\00:20:01.46 Now Job lost a great deal in his life. 00:20:01.66\00:20:05.13 What did he lose? He lost his livelihood, did he not? 00:20:05.90\00:20:09.17 And his herds and his cattle and his servants. 00:20:09.57\00:20:12.27 He lost his children, did he not? All ten of them? 00:20:12.47\00:20:16.48 And to be honest he really lost his wife, too, 00:20:16.98\00:20:19.78 because she kind of turned against him in the midst of this 00:20:19.98\00:20:23.22 and he lost his health. 00:20:23.42\00:20:26.25 We're in Job chapter 30 verse 20. 00:20:26.45\00:20:29.12 Job chapter 30 verse 20. 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.79 Job says: "I cry out to You... " meaning God. 00:20:31.99\00:20:35.80 "but You do not answer me. 00:20:36.20\00:20:38.00 I stand up and You regard me. " 00:20:38.50\00:20:42.04 The New Living Translation says: "I cry to You, 00:20:42.44\00:20:45.31 O God, but You don't answer. 00:20:45.51\00:20:47.31 I stand before You and You don't even look at me. " 00:20:47.51\00:20:52.15 Jesus experienced the silence of God. 00:20:53.11\00:20:57.92 Psalm chapter 22 verses 1 and 2. 00:20:58.72\00:21:01.62 This is that Messianic psalm. 00:21:01.82\00:21:04.33 He says on the cross: "My God! My God! 00:21:05.49\00:21:08.36 Why have you forsaken Me? 00:21:08.76\00:21:11.47 What are You so far from helping me 00:21:11.67\00:21:13.74 and from the words of my groaning? 00:21:13.94\00:21:16.07 O my God! I cry in the daytime but You do not hear. 00:21:16.27\00:21:21.34 I cry in the night season and am not silent. " 00:21:22.28\00:21:26.35 When it seems that God is silent we are called to trust 00:21:26.55\00:21:30.09 the promise not the perception. 00:21:30.29\00:21:33.66 We are called to walk by faith not by sight. 00:21:34.06\00:21:37.83 We are called to trust Him in the storm 00:21:38.23\00:21:41.26 as well as the sunshine. 00:21:41.46\00:21:43.30 Called to trust Him by faith... not our feelings. 00:21:43.70\00:21:47.70 Now this morning I want to talk to you about seven things 00:21:48.30\00:21:52.91 that God is doing when it appears that He's silent. 00:21:53.11\00:21:57.25 So when we think in our journey, in our walk with God, 00:21:57.45\00:22:01.65 and you're praying and it feels like your prayer hits 00:22:01.85\00:22:04.32 the ceiling and it bounces back and tumbles down 00:22:04.52\00:22:06.92 around your shoulders and "Where are You, God? " 00:22:07.12\00:22:10.09 In the midst of this when it seems that God is silent 00:22:10.29\00:22:14.13 there are seven things that He is doing 00:22:14.33\00:22:18.57 even in the midst of that silence... 00:22:18.77\00:22:21.64 seven things He's doing. 00:22:21.84\00:22:23.17 Number one: He hears. 00:22:23.57\00:22:26.34 He's still listening. 00:22:26.74\00:22:28.08 It might seem that He is silent but He's still listening. 00:22:28.24\00:22:31.75 Turn back to the children of Israel. 00:22:31.95\00:22:33.28 We're going back to Exodus. 00:22:33.35\00:22:34.68 Exodus chapter 2 verse 23. 00:22:36.12\00:22:41.26 Remember they'd been 400 years in bondage 00:22:41.99\00:22:44.93 wondering: "God, where are You? It seems that You're silent. " 00:22:45.13\00:22:47.90 It says: "Then the children of Israel groaned 00:22:48.30\00:22:50.43 because of the bondage and they cried out. 00:22:50.63\00:22:54.10 And their cry came up to God because of the bondage. " 00:22:54.30\00:22:58.01 Verse 24: "So God heard their groaning... " 00:22:58.21\00:23:01.64 You hear that word? "God heard their groaning 00:23:01.84\00:23:05.38 and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. " 00:23:05.78\00:23:10.29 Jump over to Exodus 3 verse 7. 00:23:10.49\00:23:13.12 The Lord said: "I have surely seen the oppression 00:23:13.52\00:23:15.96 of My people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry 00:23:16.16\00:23:19.56 because of their taskmasters. " 00:23:19.76\00:23:22.26 So does it seem right now that you are walking 00:23:22.46\00:23:25.57 in a dry desert place? Does it seem like you are walking 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.97 in the silence of God? 00:23:29.17\00:23:31.47 God hears you right now. 00:23:31.67\00:23:34.64 In the midst of whatever you deal with, in the midst of 00:23:34.84\00:23:37.41 whatever you are going through 00:23:37.61\00:23:40.08 God is listening... God hears you. 00:23:40.28\00:23:44.95 Psalm 34:15: "They eyes of the Lord are 00:23:45.15\00:23:47.12 upon the righteous and His ears are open unto their cry. " 00:23:47.32\00:23:52.49 Number two. What's the second thing God is doing 00:23:52.89\00:23:54.93 when it APPEARS that He's silent? 00:23:55.13\00:23:57.03 He not only hears... He cares. 00:23:57.23\00:24:00.67 You know, you can really listen to someone 00:24:01.50\00:24:03.81 and not focus or put your full attention or really care. 00:24:04.01\00:24:08.04 Is that true? I remember growing up 00:24:08.71\00:24:11.45 as a kid. My sister and I used to tease my Dad 00:24:11.65\00:24:14.65 a great deal because whenever he got involved in reading 00:24:14.85\00:24:17.39 everything else would kind of shove aside 00:24:17.59\00:24:20.22 and he wouldn't even pay attention. 00:24:20.42\00:24:21.86 So we would come and say: "Daddy... " 00:24:22.06\00:24:24.76 and we'd ask him a simple question. 00:24:24.96\00:24:26.93 And he'd say: "Uh-huh. " 00:24:27.13\00:24:29.50 And then we'd say: "Oh, he wasn't really paying attention. 00:24:29.90\00:24:32.73 " Right? So he heard us enough to say: "Uh-huh. " 00:24:32.93\00:24:35.17 Right? But it didn't seem like he was really invested 00:24:35.37\00:24:37.24 at that point. So then we would say: 00:24:37.44\00:24:39.31 "Oh, Daddy, can... can we go get some ice cream? " 00:24:39.71\00:24:42.84 "Uh-huh. " Now if you knew my parents 00:24:43.24\00:24:45.48 you'd know that was kind of a no-no 00:24:45.68\00:24:47.02 so you know he's not listening. 00:24:47.05\00:24:48.48 Then we'd say: "Daddy... " This is always how we ended it... 00:24:48.88\00:24:51.95 "is your head chopped off? " 00:24:52.15\00:24:53.56 "Uh-huh. " 00:24:53.76\00:24:55.56 So that tells you 00:24:56.09\00:24:58.36 you can hear but not really pay attention. 00:24:58.56\00:25:02.80 Is that true? But God not only hears 00:25:03.00\00:25:05.77 He cares. 00:25:06.17\00:25:07.67 He is invested; He is interested 00:25:08.07\00:25:11.81 in what happens to you and to me. 00:25:12.01\00:25:14.31 Matthew 10, Jesus speaking, talks about "not a sparrow 00:25:14.51\00:25:18.48 falls to the ground without the Father's notice. " 00:25:18.68\00:25:23.52 Now I don't know if you like birds. 00:25:23.92\00:25:25.42 Greg and I like birds. Some of my favorites are the bluebirds. 00:25:25.62\00:25:29.12 They're so pretty. Aren't they pretty? Oh! 00:25:29.32\00:25:31.43 And the cardinals are so bright and vibrant in their red. 00:25:31.63\00:25:35.86 And then there's the sparrows. 00:25:36.26\00:25:38.37 They're common. Would you say that? 00:25:40.00\00:25:41.80 There's a lot of sparrows. They're brown, kind of motley, 00:25:42.00\00:25:46.41 which is no issue... except they kick my bluebirds 00:25:47.11\00:25:49.74 out of the bluebird house and THAT I take issue with. 00:25:49.94\00:25:52.68 But regardless of whether they're a bully or not, 00:25:54.08\00:25:57.09 regardless of whether they're very attractive, 00:25:57.29\00:25:59.05 regardless of whether there's a lot of them 00:25:59.25\00:26:00.86 or a few of them God says: "Even the sparrow 00:26:01.02\00:26:06.19 does not fall to the ground 00:26:06.39\00:26:08.66 and I pay attention. I notice; I see. " 00:26:08.86\00:26:12.27 So God hears us in the midst of seemingly silent times. 00:26:12.47\00:26:16.81 God cares. Number three: He understands. 00:26:17.21\00:26:21.61 He understands. 00:26:22.44\00:26:24.08 When you're going through a difficult time 00:26:25.58\00:26:27.48 do you want someone who understands you? 00:26:27.68\00:26:29.55 Someone who can be there? Who can empathize? 00:26:30.05\00:26:32.95 The story is told of a teenager 00:26:33.69\00:26:35.89 who always read bedtime stories to his little sister. 00:26:36.73\00:26:41.43 And he got kind of tired every night the same bedtime story. 00:26:41.63\00:26:46.57 You know, couldn't she get a new story? 00:26:46.77\00:26:48.10 And he read it over, and the next night he read it again. 00:26:48.20\00:26:51.74 And then the next night he read it again. 00:26:51.94\00:26:54.34 Over and over and over. 00:26:54.54\00:26:57.08 So then he got the bright idea and he said: 00:26:57.28\00:26:59.61 "I'm going to record myself on a tape player 00:26:59.81\00:27:02.45 reading the bedtime story 00:27:02.65\00:27:04.09 so any time she wants to hear my voice 00:27:04.29\00:27:06.32 and she wants to listen to the story 00:27:06.52\00:27:08.29 she just turns on the tape. " 00:27:08.49\00:27:09.82 So he gave it to her. "I've got a present for you. " 00:27:09.99\00:27:11.93 And he's thinking: "Whew! I'm kind of free of my 00:27:12.33\00:27:14.20 little kid sister and I don't have to worry about this 00:27:14.40\00:27:16.46 every night. " 00:27:16.67\00:27:18.00 So he gave her... "Here is the little tape player 00:27:18.13\00:27:20.74 and any time you want to hear a story 00:27:20.94\00:27:23.27 you just turn the button on and you can listen to it. " 00:27:23.47\00:27:26.11 She said: "But I don't want that 00:27:26.51\00:27:28.34 'cause it doesn't have a lap. " 00:27:28.84\00:27:31.98 "It doesn't have a lap. " 00:27:32.48\00:27:33.82 So her favorite part was the fact that 00:27:34.02\00:27:37.09 she could be with him and she could sit on his lap 00:27:37.29\00:27:40.82 when he read the bedtime stories. 00:27:41.02\00:27:43.69 We all need... it's an inherent need 00:27:44.09\00:27:47.10 in all of us... to be understood. 00:27:47.30\00:27:49.00 To know that someone - God - understands 00:27:49.50\00:27:54.40 what you are going through in the midst of that silent time. 00:27:54.60\00:27:58.17 Jesus understands. Hebrews 4:14-16. 00:27:58.67\00:28:02.18 "Seeing then that we have a great High Priest 00:28:02.58\00:28:06.41 who has passed through the heavens - 00:28:06.61\00:28:08.78 Jesus, the Son of God - let us hold fast our confession 00:28:08.98\00:28:13.19 for we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize 00:28:13.39\00:28:17.16 with our weaknesses. " Other translations say 00:28:17.36\00:28:20.16 "We don't have a High Priest who cannot understand 00:28:20.36\00:28:24.17 our weaknesses. " "But He was in all points 00:28:24.33\00:28:27.24 tempted like as we are yet without sin. 00:28:27.44\00:28:30.21 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace 00:28:31.37\00:28:34.88 knowing that we may obtain mercy 00:28:35.28\00:28:37.51 and find grace to help in our time of need. " 00:28:37.71\00:28:41.52 Jesus understands. 00:28:42.02\00:28:43.85 What does He understand? 00:28:44.05\00:28:45.39 He certainly understands temptation... 00:28:45.42\00:28:47.26 would you say that's true? 00:28:47.46\00:28:48.79 Luke 4:1-2. 00:28:48.96\00:28:50.43 "Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from 00:28:50.63\00:28:53.03 Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 00:28:53.23\00:28:56.60 being temped for 40 days of the devil. " 00:28:56.80\00:28:59.10 Forty days... consistent. He understands 00:28:59.30\00:29:02.64 what it feels like to be tempted. 00:29:02.84\00:29:05.07 He understands hunger. 00:29:05.57\00:29:06.91 Luke 4:2: "And those days He ate nothing, 00:29:06.98\00:29:11.31 and afterward when they had ended He was hungry. " 00:29:11.71\00:29:14.38 Now I don't know about you but fasting is not my gift. 00:29:14.58\00:29:17.75 Right? So you need to pray for me. 00:29:19.05\00:29:20.92 I need to work on that more. But fasting is a difficult 00:29:21.12\00:29:23.59 thing. No food? Wow! 00:29:23.79\00:29:25.73 Jesus understands hunger. 00:29:26.80\00:29:28.96 He understands poverty. 00:29:29.46\00:29:31.13 Matthew 8 verse 20: 00:29:31.63\00:29:33.60 "Jesus said to him: 'Foxes have holes 00:29:33.80\00:29:36.00 and the birds of the air have nests 00:29:36.20\00:29:37.71 but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. ' " 00:29:37.91\00:29:42.68 Jesus understands weariness. 00:29:43.21\00:29:45.75 Have you ever been weary? 00:29:46.15\00:29:47.48 John 4:6: "Now Jacob's well was there. 00:29:47.72\00:29:50.62 Jesus, therefore, being weary from His journey 00:29:50.82\00:29:54.26 sat by the well. " 00:29:54.46\00:29:56.36 He understands weariness. 00:29:56.86\00:29:58.19 He understands disappointment. 00:29:58.29\00:30:01.30 Luke 13 verse 34. 00:30:01.50\00:30:03.90 This is when He's overlooking Jerusalem. 00:30:04.73\00:30:07.34 He says: "Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem! 00:30:07.54\00:30:09.64 The one who kills the prophets 00:30:09.84\00:30:12.07 and stones those who are sent to her. 00:30:12.27\00:30:15.48 How often I wanted to gather your children 00:30:15.68\00:30:19.11 together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings 00:30:19.31\00:30:23.02 but you were not willing. " 00:30:23.42\00:30:25.69 He loves His people. 00:30:25.89\00:30:28.59 He came to die for His people 00:30:28.79\00:30:32.39 and yet they didn't care. 00:30:32.79\00:30:34.93 They didn't want to be gathered. 00:30:35.33\00:30:37.37 They didn't want to be saved. 00:30:37.57\00:30:39.90 They didn't want what He had to offer. 00:30:40.10\00:30:43.61 Jesus understands disappointment. 00:30:44.01\00:30:46.91 He understands rejection. 00:30:47.31\00:30:48.84 John 6:66-67 00:30:49.34\00:30:52.15 says: "From that time many of His disciples 00:30:52.55\00:30:55.88 went back and walked with Him no more. " 00:30:56.08\00:31:00.29 "Then Jesus said to the twelve: 00:31:00.99\00:31:02.72 'Are you going to leave me too? ' " 00:31:02.92\00:31:04.56 "Will you also go away? " 00:31:04.76\00:31:07.13 Jesus understands rejection. 00:31:07.33\00:31:09.73 He understands sorrow. Matthew 26... 00:31:09.93\00:31:12.87 this is the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:31:13.07\00:31:15.57 He's falling prostrate on the ground. 00:31:15.97\00:31:18.61 "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful... even unto death. " 00:31:19.34\00:31:23.65 He understands death. John chapter 11. 00:31:24.45\00:31:27.68 Remember? The death of His friend Lazarus. 00:31:27.88\00:31:30.32 And the Bible tells us that "Jesus wept. " 00:31:30.52\00:31:33.56 He also understands the silence of God. 00:31:33.96\00:31:38.23 Matthew 27 verse 46. 00:31:38.86\00:31:41.03 "At the ninth hour Jesus cried out: 'My God! My God! 00:31:41.23\00:31:44.80 Why have You forsaken Me? ' " 00:31:45.20\00:31:48.17 Now that's just a few things that Jesus understands. 00:31:48.37\00:31:50.77 We know He understands us completely because He walked 00:31:50.97\00:31:54.78 this earth as a human: 00:31:54.98\00:31:57.28 fully divine... fully human. 00:31:57.48\00:32:00.18 He walked this earth and He understands. 00:32:00.38\00:32:02.58 So when we experience the silence of God 00:32:03.28\00:32:08.56 we know that He hears. 00:32:08.76\00:32:10.16 We know that He cares. 00:32:10.36\00:32:12.29 We know that He understands. 00:32:12.49\00:32:14.46 Number four: He comforts. 00:32:14.66\00:32:17.17 Have you experienced the comforting power of God? 00:32:17.47\00:32:19.60 How does He comfort? 00:32:20.00\00:32:21.84 He comforts us by His Word. 00:32:22.04\00:32:24.17 Psalm 119:49-50. 00:32:24.37\00:32:27.34 "Remember the Word to Your servant upon which You have 00:32:27.74\00:32:30.45 caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction 00:32:30.65\00:32:34.92 for Your Word has given me life. " 00:32:35.32\00:32:38.42 What gave comfort in the midst of the affliction? 00:32:38.62\00:32:42.46 His Word. God's Word has incredible power! 00:32:43.39\00:32:47.66 The promises contained in this Word... we know all His promises 00:32:47.86\00:32:51.70 are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. 00:32:51.90\00:32:55.97 I love to pray the Word of God back to Him. 00:32:56.37\00:32:59.54 That revolutionized my prayer life 00:32:59.74\00:33:02.74 when I understood that I could claim these promises 00:33:02.94\00:33:06.35 and I could call those things that are not 00:33:06.55\00:33:09.48 as though they already were. In other words, 00:33:09.68\00:33:12.09 it says: "I am a new creation in Christ Jesus. " 00:33:12.29\00:33:14.82 Well, do I feel new today? No. 00:33:15.02\00:33:16.66 Do I act new? You could ask my husband. 00:33:16.86\00:33:19.49 He'd probably say: "Well, I'm not so sure, Jilly. " 00:33:19.69\00:33:21.76 So the truth is that in Christ I can claim them. 00:33:21.96\00:33:27.07 I can pray that back to God and say: "Thank you 00:33:27.47\00:33:30.87 God that in You You can make me a new creation 00:33:31.07\00:33:36.54 and You have made me a new creation. " 00:33:36.75\00:33:38.68 We experience comfort by His Word. We experience comfort by 00:33:39.48\00:33:42.45 His Spirit. We experience comfort by His presence. 00:33:42.65\00:33:47.79 Psalm 23:4: "Yea, though I walk 00:33:48.19\00:33:50.53 through the valley of the shadow of death 00:33:50.73\00:33:53.46 I will fear no evil... " And why? 00:33:53.66\00:33:55.56 Because He is with us. 00:33:55.76\00:33:58.83 His presence brings us comfort. 00:33:59.03\00:34:01.87 Number five: He accompanies. 00:34:02.07\00:34:04.47 Turn with me to Isaiah. 00:34:04.87\00:34:06.57 Isaiah is probably one of my favorite Old Testament books. 00:34:06.98\00:34:10.55 And it's kind of divided into two sections. 00:34:10.95\00:34:13.05 You have the first section of Isaiah 00:34:13.45\00:34:14.95 called the Book of Judgment. 00:34:15.15\00:34:17.49 And it's a little harsh you could say. 00:34:17.89\00:34:20.86 The people were turning their back on God. 00:34:21.02\00:34:23.69 They had forsaken Him; they were worshiping idols. 00:34:23.89\00:34:27.26 And so the message is a strong one. 00:34:27.66\00:34:30.77 It's a message of judgment: to turn from what they were doing. 00:34:30.97\00:34:35.07 The second half of the book of Isaiah 00:34:35.47\00:34:37.51 is a message of comfort. 00:34:37.71\00:34:40.31 Isaiah chapter 43. 00:34:40.81\00:34:42.74 Isaiah 43. God wants us to turn back to Him. 00:34:43.14\00:34:47.12 He wants to redeem us and restore our relationship 00:34:47.32\00:34:52.25 with Him. Isaiah chapter 43 verse 1: 00:34:52.45\00:34:55.16 "Now thus says the Lord who created you, O Jacob. " 00:34:55.36\00:34:59.43 In the Hebrew the word for create means to form 00:34:59.63\00:35:02.46 or shape. I imagine God - 00:35:02.66\00:35:06.57 Adam and Eve in the very beginning - forming them 00:35:08.44\00:35:11.97 from the dust of the ground. 00:35:12.37\00:35:14.34 "Now thus says the Lord who created you. 00:35:14.54\00:35:17.18 He formed you, O Israel. Fear not 00:35:17.38\00:35:22.38 for I have redeemed you. " 00:35:22.58\00:35:25.52 He bought us back. 00:35:27.02\00:35:28.46 He made us in the beginning 00:35:28.66\00:35:30.79 and then we turned our back on Him. 00:35:30.99\00:35:33.90 We said: "We don't want anything to do with You. 00:35:34.10\00:35:35.83 We choose our own way. " 00:35:36.03\00:35:38.57 And then He, by the power of His Spirit 00:35:38.77\00:35:41.20 and by the blood of Jesus at the cross 00:35:41.60\00:35:44.34 He bought us back. 00:35:44.54\00:35:46.57 "I have called you by your name... you are Mine. " 00:35:46.98\00:35:49.14 Here's the promise, verse 2: 00:35:49.34\00:35:50.68 "When you pass through the waters I will be with you 00:35:50.81\00:35:54.42 and through the rivers... they shall not overflow you. 00:35:54.82\00:35:57.92 When you walk through the fire you shall not be burned 00:35:58.12\00:36:00.26 nor shall the flames scorch you. 00:36:00.46\00:36:02.52 I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, 00:36:02.72\00:36:06.16 your Savior. " 00:36:06.36\00:36:07.96 He walks with us in the midst of the fire. 00:36:09.66\00:36:13.60 He walks beside us as we go through the raging stream. 00:36:13.80\00:36:19.21 We do not walk alone. 00:36:19.41\00:36:21.61 Hebrews 13 verse 5 He says: "Never will I leave you; 00:36:21.81\00:36:25.95 never will I forsake you. " 00:36:26.15\00:36:28.55 We are not alone. 00:36:28.95\00:36:30.79 Twenty years ago my Mom had some serious health challenges. 00:36:31.29\00:36:35.19 And even though it's been 20 years I can remember it 00:36:35.69\00:36:38.09 as if it were yesterday. 00:36:38.29\00:36:39.96 I remember the doctor visit after doctor visit. 00:36:40.36\00:36:43.06 I remember wondering what's going to happen. 00:36:43.57\00:36:47.44 What's the diagnosis going to be? 00:36:47.64\00:36:49.57 Scared! And there was a certain scripture that 00:36:50.07\00:36:53.24 I claimed: Psalm 112 verse 7. 00:36:53.44\00:36:56.54 "You shall not be afraid of evil tidings. 00:36:56.75\00:37:00.45 His heart is fixed trusting in the Lord. " 00:37:00.65\00:37:05.19 Now I had misinterpreted that scripture. 00:37:05.39\00:37:08.66 I thought it meant nothing evil will come to me 00:37:09.06\00:37:12.53 as long as my heart is fixed trusting in the Lord. 00:37:12.73\00:37:15.73 Well that's not what the scripture says at all 00:37:15.93\00:37:17.37 but that is what I was claiming. 00:37:17.77\00:37:19.57 "So God, as long as I have enough faith, 00:37:19.77\00:37:22.70 as long as my heart is fixed firmly enough on You, 00:37:22.90\00:37:27.08 as long as I keep that 00:37:27.48\00:37:29.44 we're going to have a good outcome for my Mom. " 00:37:29.64\00:37:32.21 So I remember sitting in the doctor's office. 00:37:32.71\00:37:34.72 My Mom's on the table here in the middle; 00:37:34.92\00:37:37.25 my Dad's on this side. 00:37:37.45\00:37:38.82 I can still remember him leaning against the wall 00:37:39.02\00:37:40.86 arms folded across his chest. 00:37:41.06\00:37:43.02 I'm over here on this side leaning up against the wall 00:37:43.63\00:37:46.49 over here arms across my chest looking. 00:37:46.70\00:37:48.96 Here comes the doctor and I'm just claiming: 00:37:49.36\00:37:51.27 "You shall not be afraid of evil tidings. 00:37:51.47\00:37:53.07 His heart is fixed trusting in the Lord God. " 00:37:53.27\00:37:55.14 "You've got this, God. It's going to be a good report. " 00:37:55.34\00:37:58.04 "God, I'm claiming that. " 00:37:58.24\00:37:59.91 The doctor comes in. 00:38:00.31\00:38:02.21 He says: "I'm so sorry 00:38:02.61\00:38:04.61 but the diagnosis isn't good. 00:38:05.01\00:38:10.35 She's diagnosed with MS. " 00:38:11.65\00:38:13.66 And I remember it was quiet in the room. 00:38:14.16\00:38:18.89 The doctor left. I remember my Mom crying. 00:38:19.79\00:38:23.03 And I remember I was MAD at God. 00:38:23.43\00:38:25.57 "But God... " You remember I had misinterpreted the scripture. 00:38:26.37\00:38:29.80 Remember that? So I'm saying: "But God... 00:38:30.01\00:38:31.94 as long as I claim this, as long as I had enough 00:38:32.14\00:38:36.75 faith, You said nothing evil was going to happen. " 00:38:36.95\00:38:39.21 And then I looked at the scripture again 00:38:39.41\00:38:41.25 and realized that's not at all what it says. 00:38:41.45\00:38:44.29 It said not that evil wouldn't come - 00:38:44.69\00:38:47.26 we know the rain falls on the just and the unjust - 00:38:47.66\00:38:50.13 we know that trials and tribulations come to those who 00:38:50.33\00:38:53.76 walk with Jesus and those who have turned their back on Him. 00:38:53.96\00:38:57.37 It doesn't matter... we know that. 00:38:57.77\00:38:59.73 It is because we live in a world of sin. 00:38:59.93\00:39:03.61 BUT the promise in that scripture 00:39:04.01\00:39:07.31 is that God will be with us through anything. 00:39:07.51\00:39:12.41 God will be with us in the midst of the storm. 00:39:12.61\00:39:16.72 He hears; He cares; He understands; He comforts; 00:39:17.12\00:39:21.06 He accompanies. Number six: He answers. 00:39:21.26\00:39:25.06 Now you might be saying: "Wait a minute, Jill. 00:39:25.46\00:39:27.16 I've asked for an answer and I didn't get it. " 00:39:27.43\00:39:30.40 "I asked for an answer and it did not come 00:39:30.90\00:39:34.54 the way I wanted. " 00:39:34.74\00:39:36.17 You know, we're taught as kids... at least I was taught 00:39:36.57\00:39:38.44 as a kid... there are three answers to prayer. 00:39:38.64\00:39:40.71 Were you ever taught that? 00:39:40.91\00:39:42.24 Yes... no... and what's this one? Maybe. 00:39:42.38\00:39:47.78 Yes! That's what I was taught. 00:39:47.98\00:39:49.68 I think there's actually four. 00:39:49.88\00:39:51.92 First one over here says: "No... not yet. " 00:39:52.32\00:39:56.29 Now that's the one that would be what we'd consider the maybe, 00:39:57.23\00:40:00.63 right? "No... not yet. " 00:40:00.83\00:40:03.13 You know, they say on average people are going to spend 00:40:03.53\00:40:05.73 six months of your lifetime waiting in line for something. 00:40:05.93\00:40:10.34 Whoo! Forty-three days on hold with automated customer service. 00:40:11.31\00:40:16.14 Twenty-seven days waiting at the bus platform. 00:40:16.64\00:40:19.88 Nine years of the average person's life is spent on the 00:40:20.08\00:40:22.95 cell phone... and for my assistant LaDonna over here 00:40:23.15\00:40:25.19 and myself... we probably would spend at least eighteen years 00:40:25.39\00:40:27.56 of our life on our cell phones. 00:40:27.72\00:40:29.19 No, those are just... We say: "OK... I don't like to wait. " 00:40:30.83\00:40:33.50 But what if it's a more difficult waiting time? 00:40:34.60\00:40:37.40 What if you're waiting for the result of a biopsy 00:40:37.60\00:40:39.43 or the nurse's voice after surgery? 00:40:39.63\00:40:41.60 Or the door to open for the job you always wanted 00:40:41.80\00:40:44.14 or the home you want or the ministry that doesn't 00:40:44.34\00:40:46.37 seem to open. Or finances for school or loans 00:40:46.57\00:40:50.35 or retirement. Or maybe you just want God to provide you 00:40:50.55\00:40:53.95 with a friend or a child 00:40:54.15\00:40:57.22 or a soulmate. 00:40:57.42\00:40:59.62 What do we do in the midst of that waiting time? 00:41:00.12\00:41:03.06 So that is a subject altogether for another time. 00:41:03.26\00:41:06.29 We won't get into that. But the first 00:41:06.70\00:41:09.46 answer is "No, not yet" meaning it might be coming 00:41:09.86\00:41:13.03 but not at this time. 00:41:13.23\00:41:14.97 Second answer is "No... because I love you too much. " 00:41:15.37\00:41:20.34 Now how in the world could love be a "no? " 00:41:20.91\00:41:24.81 Wouldn't you think if you love someone you want to 00:41:25.85\00:41:28.55 give them good things? 00:41:28.75\00:41:30.52 How can love be a "no? " 00:41:34.32\00:41:36.09 This is a deep subject. 00:41:36.59\00:41:38.56 Could take a very long time. 00:41:38.96\00:41:40.30 I can think of at least three ways - three reasons - 00:41:40.70\00:41:42.93 that love is a "no" 00:41:43.13\00:41:44.47 because love is protection. 00:41:44.50\00:41:47.04 Boundaries are for our safety. 00:41:47.87\00:41:51.44 You think about you have a kid and they go to touch 00:41:51.64\00:41:53.24 the hot stove and what do you say? 00:41:53.44\00:41:54.94 "Oh yes, honey, 'cause Mommy wants to say yes. " 00:41:55.34\00:41:57.28 No! Right? You say: "Don't touch that stove! " 00:41:57.48\00:42:00.32 Why? Because love is protection. 00:42:00.52\00:42:03.82 What if they run out in the street? 00:42:04.22\00:42:05.72 You would run and grab your kid - wouldn't you? - 00:42:05.92\00:42:07.66 and pull them back from danger 00:42:07.86\00:42:10.46 because love is protection. 00:42:10.66\00:42:13.09 Love is also ownership. 00:42:13.29\00:42:16.43 When you belong to someone - 00:42:17.43\00:42:19.93 and we belong to the Lord Jesus Christ - 00:42:20.14\00:42:22.64 He has a Godly jealousy over us. 00:42:23.04\00:42:27.68 Now there's a big difference be- tween being jealous for someone 00:42:27.88\00:42:31.21 or being jealous of someone. 00:42:31.61\00:42:34.12 If you are jealous for someone that's like coveting, right? 00:42:34.32\00:42:37.59 That's the wrong kind of jealousy. 00:42:37.79\00:42:39.69 "I wish I could have their car or their spouse 00:42:39.89\00:42:43.96 or their bank account or their position. " Right? 00:42:44.16\00:42:46.36 That's a wrong type of jealousy. 00:42:46.56\00:42:49.16 This jealousy - jealous of something - 00:42:49.86\00:42:52.73 is what I call this love means ownership. 00:42:52.93\00:42:56.64 In other words, God says "I love you so much 00:42:57.41\00:43:00.88 that if you have something in your life - 00:43:01.08\00:43:03.45 if there is an idol - if there is something in your life 00:43:03.65\00:43:07.05 between Me and you... " Me and you, I apologize... 00:43:07.25\00:43:12.22 God and us... If there's something in our life 00:43:12.42\00:43:15.22 He says: "I want that to go. " 00:43:15.62\00:43:18.23 "Because I love you so much I want you to only belong 00:43:18.43\00:43:23.10 to Me and to nobody else. " 00:43:23.30\00:43:25.57 Love is protection; love is ownership; 00:43:26.43\00:43:28.90 love is also salvation. 00:43:29.10\00:43:31.84 I think about Jesus when He experienced the silence of God. 00:43:32.47\00:43:36.51 He said: "God, if it's possible, 00:43:37.68\00:43:39.85 please... " What'd He say? "let this cup pass from Me. " 00:43:40.05\00:43:44.35 "I don't want to go to the cross... 00:43:44.75\00:43:46.86 I don't think I can experience that. " 00:43:47.06\00:43:49.12 "I cannot walk through that. " 00:43:49.52\00:43:51.93 "In My flesh I cannot do that. " 00:43:52.13\00:43:54.83 And yet, God said: "No. " 00:43:55.23\00:43:57.23 And why is that? So that you and I could be saved. 00:43:57.43\00:44:01.24 Sometimes the answer is a "no" and it has nothing to do with 00:44:01.77\00:44:05.84 protection and nothing to do with ownership 00:44:06.04\00:44:08.18 and everything to do with the salvation of someone else. 00:44:08.38\00:44:12.38 Maybe someone else in your life, 00:44:12.88\00:44:14.62 someone else in your neighborhood, someone else 00:44:14.82\00:44:16.95 in your community. 00:44:17.15\00:44:18.55 So the first answer is: "No, not yet. " 00:44:18.75\00:44:20.89 Then we have: "No, I love you too much. " 00:44:21.09\00:44:23.53 Then we have: "Yes! I thought you would never ask! " 00:44:23.93\00:44:27.76 Think of James chapter 4 verse 2. 00:44:28.16\00:44:30.13 What does the Bible tell us? "You have not... " What? 00:44:30.33\00:44:32.73 "because you ask not. " 00:44:32.93\00:44:35.17 Philippians... Philippians? Psalm 2:8. 00:44:35.57\00:44:38.41 "Ask of Me, and I'll give you the heathen for your inheritance 00:44:38.81\00:44:41.98 and the uttermost parts of the world for your possession. " 00:44:42.18\00:44:45.85 What do we ask for? The conversion of our family, 00:44:46.41\00:44:49.42 friends, neighbors, enemies... the world. 00:44:49.62\00:44:51.79 The outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:44:51.99\00:44:53.92 We ask for revival and reformation to spring forth. 00:44:54.12\00:44:57.39 A new heart... the heart of flesh that He has promised us 00:44:57.59\00:45:00.93 in Ezekiel 36. We ask for God to write His law 00:45:01.13\00:45:04.63 in our heart and on our mind 00:45:04.83\00:45:06.94 that we could become a new creation in Christ Jesus. 00:45:07.14\00:45:10.14 That He could be glorified in our life. 00:45:10.54\00:45:13.07 We ask for spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus, 00:45:13.27\00:45:16.08 that His name would be written on our forehead, 00:45:16.28\00:45:18.95 that our name would be written in the Lamb's Book of Life. 00:45:19.15\00:45:22.28 That we could be transformed into His image. 00:45:22.68\00:45:24.79 We ask for strength to endure and grace to overcome 00:45:24.99\00:45:27.56 and victory from sin, deliverance from bondage, 00:45:27.72\00:45:31.09 freedom in Christ, peace that passes all understanding. 00:45:31.29\00:45:34.03 And then we thank Him that His promises are yes and amen 00:45:34.43\00:45:40.34 in Christ Jesus. 00:45:40.74\00:45:42.64 And the final answer over here is another yes. 00:45:42.84\00:45:45.54 Yes and so much more. 00:45:45.94\00:45:48.74 God wants to do "exceedingly abundantly 00:45:49.14\00:45:52.98 above all that we could ever ask or think. " 00:45:53.18\00:45:56.69 Ephesians 3 verse 20. 00:45:57.09\00:45:59.05 So God hears us... even when it seems like He's silent 00:46:00.19\00:46:04.59 in your life He's listening. 00:46:04.79\00:46:06.70 When it seems like He's silent He cares for you. 00:46:07.10\00:46:10.37 When it seems like He's silent He understands what you're 00:46:10.87\00:46:15.20 going through. When it seems like He's silent 00:46:15.40\00:46:17.84 He comforts you. 00:46:18.24\00:46:20.94 When it seems like He's silent He accompanies 00:46:21.34\00:46:24.98 or He walks with you through the fire. 00:46:25.18\00:46:29.55 When it seems like He's silent He answers. 00:46:29.95\00:46:33.09 And sometimes - I don't even understand - 00:46:33.29\00:46:36.22 the answer is not what we asked for. 00:46:36.42\00:46:39.43 I know some of you here in this room. 00:46:40.50\00:46:42.56 Some of you I haven't met yet. 00:46:42.96\00:46:45.07 I know a few of your stories. 00:46:45.47\00:46:47.20 Some of you have lost children to death, 00:46:47.40\00:46:50.11 spouses to death... divorce. 00:46:50.51\00:46:54.18 Some of you your children have walked away from God 00:46:54.38\00:46:56.68 and you just want them to come back. 00:46:57.61\00:46:59.91 We all have an experience, a time when we are walking 00:47:00.98\00:47:06.65 through that silent time... 00:47:06.86\00:47:09.39 that time of pain. 00:47:09.89\00:47:11.29 And yet number 7, the final thing that God does. 00:47:11.49\00:47:15.13 Always happens. And that is that He delivers. 00:47:15.53\00:47:20.24 He delivers. 00:47:21.04\00:47:22.50 We started with the children of Israel; I want to end with them. 00:47:22.70\00:47:24.94 Go back to Exodus... Exodus chapter 3. 00:47:25.14\00:47:28.81 Exodus 3 verses 7 and 8. 00:47:30.55\00:47:32.71 We read 7 already at the beginning, but let's 00:47:32.91\00:47:34.62 read it again. "The Lord said: 'I have surely seen 00:47:34.82\00:47:37.49 the oppression of My people who are in Egypt 00:47:37.65\00:47:40.92 and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters 00:47:41.12\00:47:45.29 for I know their sorrows. ' " 00:47:45.49\00:47:47.56 God knows, sees, and under- stands your sorrows today. 00:47:47.76\00:47:51.97 "So I have come down to... " What's that word? 00:47:52.47\00:47:55.64 "deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians 00:47:55.84\00:47:59.87 and to bring them in from that land to a good and large land, 00:48:00.08\00:48:03.45 to a land flowing with milk and honey. " 00:48:03.65\00:48:05.88 Now it might seem like the deliverance is not coming 00:48:06.28\00:48:10.02 in your life but it will come. 00:48:10.22\00:48:12.92 God will bring that deliverance. 00:48:13.42\00:48:16.83 John 8:36: "If the Son makes you free, 00:48:17.03\00:48:20.16 you shall be free indeed. " 00:48:20.56\00:48:24.17 What does He deliver us from? 00:48:25.00\00:48:26.43 He delivers us from bondage. The children of Israel 00:48:26.63\00:48:29.64 were in bondage for 400 years. 00:48:29.84\00:48:32.61 Entrapped, enslaved... and yet God by the power 00:48:33.11\00:48:36.68 of His Spirit delivered them. 00:48:36.88\00:48:39.38 Broke those bands of slavery and He delivered them. 00:48:39.58\00:48:43.22 He delivers us from trouble. Psalm 34:17: 00:48:43.62\00:48:46.29 "The righteous cry and the Lord hears 00:48:46.49\00:48:49.39 and delivers them out of all their trouble. " 00:48:49.59\00:48:53.19 He delivers us from fear. 00:48:53.40\00:48:55.56 Psalm 34:4: "I sought the Lord 00:48:55.96\00:48:58.83 and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears. " 00:48:59.03\00:49:03.07 Are you afraid today? 00:49:03.27\00:49:04.61 Are you going through something that makes your heart tremble? 00:49:04.64\00:49:07.58 Are you going through something that you feel like you are in 00:49:07.78\00:49:10.15 the midst of bondage and addiction? 00:49:10.35\00:49:13.31 Do you feel like you are in trouble and there is no way out? 00:49:13.52\00:49:17.49 God wants to deliver you today. 00:49:17.89\00:49:21.29 He wants to deliver you from bondage 00:49:21.69\00:49:23.39 and from trouble and from fear and from sin. 00:49:23.59\00:49:27.30 Matthew 1:21: "He shall save His people 00:49:27.50\00:49:30.63 from their sin. " 00:49:31.03\00:49:33.77 I stepped out of our kitchen into the garage 00:49:36.50\00:49:40.61 and the heat just hit me full in the face. 00:49:41.01\00:49:43.45 Hundred degrees. 00:49:45.65\00:49:47.22 Flat 100 degrees in the garage. 00:49:47.42\00:49:49.52 Greg and I were headed out and the garage door opened up 00:49:49.72\00:49:54.16 and all of a sudden... I was just getting in the car 00:49:54.32\00:49:56.32 and Greg said: "Jilly look up. " And so I looked up 00:49:56.52\00:49:59.89 and there was a humming- bird at the peak of the roof. 00:50:00.10\00:50:04.10 Little itty bitty. 00:50:04.50\00:50:06.53 Now it was 100 where I was standing 00:50:06.74\00:50:08.40 so it was probably I don't know, 110... 115? It was hotter 00:50:08.60\00:50:12.04 up there in the rafters. 00:50:12.24\00:50:13.94 And I said: "Well it needs to come out. " 00:50:15.28\00:50:19.31 The garage door was open so I said: "Come, come! " 00:50:19.51\00:50:22.48 It's not going to listen to me but I thought maybe 00:50:22.68\00:50:24.35 if the door's open it would know safety is outside. 00:50:24.55\00:50:27.82 It's going to die at the peak of the roof. 00:50:28.02\00:50:30.09 "Come out! " But it didn't. 00:50:30.49\00:50:32.89 I ran and I got our humming- bird feeder. It's red. 00:50:33.29\00:50:35.73 And I thought maybe it'd be attracted to the red 00:50:35.93\00:50:37.73 and it would come down. That didn't do anything. 00:50:37.93\00:50:41.00 So Greg put on some old work gloves. 00:50:41.40\00:50:43.67 He got a ladder. 00:50:44.07\00:50:46.01 And I held my breath as he climbed up the ladder 00:50:46.21\00:50:48.84 and then stepped onto the trusses... the rafters. 00:50:49.24\00:50:52.91 And he stepped from one to the other to the other 00:50:53.62\00:50:57.52 till he was right underneath where the hummingbird was. 00:50:57.72\00:51:01.16 And he reached up and he grabbed it 00:51:01.56\00:51:05.23 in his gloved hands, and it began to squawk 00:51:05.63\00:51:08.26 in a way that I have never heard a hummingbird squawk before. 00:51:08.46\00:51:11.73 I'm sure it said: "What do you think you're doing? 00:51:12.13\00:51:13.94 Are you trying to kill me? " 00:51:14.34\00:51:15.67 And then he gingerly stepped from rafter to rafter 00:51:16.54\00:51:19.97 and then walked down the ladder. 00:51:20.38\00:51:22.81 And we went outside and he opened up his hand 00:51:23.21\00:51:26.05 and it was so weak that it couldn't even fly. 00:51:26.25\00:51:31.89 And so I held the hummingbird feeder there 00:51:32.29\00:51:34.76 and it picked up its little beak and it began to drink. 00:51:35.16\00:51:38.93 And then pretty soon it got enough energy 00:51:39.33\00:51:43.10 and it lifted off and it flew away. 00:51:43.30\00:51:46.23 And it reminded me of how many times 00:51:48.10\00:51:50.51 I have walked in a way of my own choosing. 00:51:51.01\00:51:54.18 I have refused to do things God's way. 00:51:55.04\00:51:59.91 And I got "enwrapped" in bondage and slavery. 00:52:00.32\00:52:03.92 I became in trouble. 00:52:04.32\00:52:06.62 I was surrounded with fear and didn't even know how to get out. 00:52:07.66\00:52:11.69 Didn't know where to go or what to do. 00:52:12.23\00:52:15.23 God opened the door 00:52:16.00\00:52:17.73 and said: "Why don't you come? " 00:52:17.93\00:52:19.63 And I was too afraid. 00:52:20.04\00:52:21.80 I preferred to stay at the roof 00:52:22.30\00:52:25.74 where I would die. 00:52:26.61\00:52:28.34 And then Jesus climbed the ladder of my own stubbornness 00:52:28.84\00:52:34.08 and pride and He reached up scarred hands 00:52:34.28\00:52:38.25 to hold me. And then He walked back down 00:52:39.62\00:52:44.86 and went outside the garage - 00:52:45.36\00:52:48.06 outside of my prison home, 00:52:49.76\00:52:52.10 outside of where I had been trapped in bondage - 00:52:52.50\00:52:55.54 and He opened up His hands 00:52:55.94\00:52:57.84 setting me free to choose again. 00:52:59.04\00:53:01.14 Because our God never forces. 00:53:01.88\00:53:04.41 Our God says: "I love you. " 00:53:04.81\00:53:06.98 "I died for you! " 00:53:07.38\00:53:09.65 "I want to set you free, 00:53:09.85\00:53:12.29 and even when it feels that you are walking in a silent time 00:53:12.49\00:53:17.59 I am right there 00:53:17.79\00:53:19.63 and I want to bring you deliverance... 00:53:19.83\00:53:23.60 but it's up to you. 00:53:24.00\00:53:25.70 You can turn back around and fly into the garage 00:53:25.90\00:53:29.10 or you can be free.
