00:07:21.74\00:07:26.57 Math is a science, but it is also a language 00:07:26.61\00:07:31.85 that astrophysicists and astronomers 00:07:31.88\00:07:34.98 used to try to understand, 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.99 and to describe His great universe. 00:07:38.02\00:07:41.36 You use math daily. 00:07:41.39\00:07:43.73 You use math to count, to tell the time. 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.36 You use math to measure, 00:07:46.39\00:07:49.70 to shop those 50% off sales. 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.93 You use math to bank to pay your bills 00:07:52.97\00:07:56.97 and even to operate your vehicle. 00:07:57.01\00:07:59.17 If you have a car that gets 30 miles to the gallon 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.91 and you buy 2 gallons of gas, how far can you go? 00:08:02.94\00:08:06.61 Amen, 60 miles. 00:08:06.65\00:08:08.38 I knew you look like a smart audience. 00:08:08.42\00:08:11.25 So I need you to help me 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.59 with a very simple math equation. 00:08:13.62\00:08:15.72 If I have one here, and one here, and one here, 00:08:15.76\00:08:21.03 what does that equal? 00:08:21.06\00:08:22.43 Three. Absolutely. 00:08:22.46\00:08:23.87 Three is the correct answer. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.57 If we assume addition is the right formula. 00:08:25.60\00:08:30.84 The Bible says in Deuteronomy 6:4, 00:08:30.87\00:08:34.08 "Here, oh Israel, 00:08:34.11\00:08:35.98 the Lord our God, the Lord is one." 00:08:36.01\00:08:39.48 That is a major tenet of Judaism, 00:08:39.51\00:08:43.18 they are monotheistic, they believe in one God. 00:08:43.22\00:08:46.72 It is a major tenet of Christianity as well. 00:08:46.76\00:08:51.53 Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:4, 00:08:51.56\00:08:54.53 when someone asked Him, 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.67 "What is the greatest commandment?" 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.83 And it's recorded in Mark 12:28, 29. 00:08:59.87\00:09:04.31 Paul describes God as one God. 00:09:04.34\00:09:09.11 And we know that in Deuteronomy 6:4, 00:09:09.14\00:09:12.58 when it says, "The Lord is one." 00:09:12.61\00:09:15.38 The Hebrew word for one is echadh. 00:09:15.42\00:09:19.09 And it means a compound unity. 00:09:19.12\00:09:24.63 God is one, 00:09:24.66\00:09:27.13 but He is made up of more than one. 00:09:27.16\00:09:32.13 When we think about, 00:09:32.17\00:09:35.17 I believe and I hope to show you today, 00:09:35.20\00:09:38.14 that the Bible teaches God, the Father, Son, 00:09:38.17\00:09:42.24 and Holy Spirit equal one. 00:09:42.28\00:09:45.01 Now some people push back on that idea 00:09:45.05\00:09:48.05 because their mathematical mind has a hard time realizing 00:09:48.08\00:09:53.15 how three can be one. 00:09:53.19\00:09:55.29 So I asked God for an illustration. 00:09:55.32\00:09:59.46 And no sooner had I prayed that, 00:09:59.49\00:10:03.47 then He gave me an epiphany. 00:10:03.50\00:10:06.33 It is something I have never heard before, 00:10:06.37\00:10:09.14 and I have shared this with people 00:10:09.17\00:10:11.67 who've been in ministry longer than I, 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.08 and they've never heard it before either. 00:10:14.11\00:10:17.81 What this is, is we need to change 00:10:17.85\00:10:23.32 our mathematical assumptions. 00:10:23.35\00:10:26.29 It is not addition 00:10:26.32\00:10:28.19 because one plus, one plus, one, 00:10:28.22\00:10:30.33 the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:10:30.36\00:10:34.26 One plus, one plus one equals three. 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.93 The formula 00:10:37.97\00:10:39.73 for our triune God is on the screen. 00:10:39.77\00:10:44.21 It is one times one, 00:10:44.24\00:10:48.44 times one, which equals one, 00:10:48.48\00:10:53.11 one to the third power. 00:10:53.15\00:10:57.69 The Father, Son, and Spirit, 00:10:57.72\00:11:00.29 the three persons of the Godhead 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.52 are of equal essence, 00:11:02.56\00:11:04.49 they have the exact same nature. 00:11:04.53\00:11:07.93 Jesus said, "I and the Father are one." 00:11:07.96\00:11:10.30 He said, "Believe me that I am in the Father, 00:11:10.33\00:11:13.50 and the Father is in me." 00:11:13.54\00:11:15.44 And then He called the Holy Spirit, 00:11:15.47\00:11:18.64 the Spirit of your Father. 00:11:18.67\00:11:21.24 Paul called Jesus the great God and Savior. 00:11:21.28\00:11:25.95 And Paul equates 00:11:25.98\00:11:27.48 the Holy Spirit to the Spirit of Christ. 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.32 They are all of the same essence. 00:11:30.35\00:11:33.46 One times, one times, one equals one. 00:11:33.49\00:11:37.73 But they are also the divine nature 00:11:37.76\00:11:40.90 is an indivisible essence. 00:11:40.93\00:11:44.73 One divided by one, 00:11:44.77\00:11:47.64 divided by one, equals one. 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.74 One is the perfect number to represent the Godhead. 00:11:50.77\00:11:55.74 One is the only number 00:11:55.78\00:11:57.81 that can be multiplied by itself, 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.62 and divided by itself, 00:12:00.65\00:12:03.45 and still equal the original number. 00:12:03.49\00:12:07.42 To the Hebrew mind, 00:12:07.46\00:12:09.79 harmony was achieved by exact equality 00:12:09.82\00:12:15.26 or by repetition of like dimensions. 00:12:15.30\00:12:20.47 So they saw harmony in a square 00:12:20.50\00:12:23.64 and perfect harmony in a cube. 00:12:23.67\00:12:27.94 When you in math, take a number 00:12:27.98\00:12:30.85 and multiply itself by itself, 00:12:30.88\00:12:35.25 say for example two times two, that number is the square. 00:12:35.28\00:12:41.16 If you multiply a number by itself twice, 00:12:41.19\00:12:45.59 two times, two times two, 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.26 that number is a cube. 00:12:48.30\00:12:52.60 One is the only number that can be cubed 00:12:52.63\00:12:57.41 and still have the same value, the original number. 00:12:57.44\00:13:03.24 One times, one times one equals one cubed. 00:13:03.28\00:13:09.02 Each time a cube is mentioned in scripture, 00:13:09.05\00:13:13.36 it is a place where God dwells. 00:13:13.39\00:13:17.93 And I believe that what God is showing us 00:13:17.96\00:13:21.86 in the cube is His invisible attribute 00:13:21.90\00:13:25.47 of one times, one times one. 00:13:25.50\00:13:28.44 In Romans 1:20 on the screen, 00:13:28.47\00:13:32.07 Paul here is writing, referring to nature. 00:13:32.11\00:13:34.14 But He says, 00:13:34.18\00:13:35.51 "For since the creation of the world, 00:13:35.54\00:13:37.35 His invisible attributes are clearly seen, 00:13:37.38\00:13:40.58 being understood by the things that are made, 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.42 even His eternal power and Godhead." 00:13:43.45\00:13:46.76 Well, God instructed other things to be made. 00:13:46.79\00:13:51.76 And I believe it is to show His invisible attributes. 00:13:51.79\00:13:55.73 God told Moses on the mountain. 00:13:55.76\00:13:59.03 Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell with them. 00:13:59.07\00:14:02.57 That is the heart of our loving God. 00:14:02.60\00:14:05.04 He wants to dwell with His people. 00:14:05.07\00:14:08.01 And then, He gave Moses the exact dimensions, 00:14:08.04\00:14:13.45 He gave him exact instructions, how to build this sanctuary. 00:14:13.48\00:14:18.55 And it was theology in a physical form, 00:14:18.59\00:14:22.79 it explained the plan of salvation. 00:14:23.06\00:14:27.93 The Holy of Holies which was the inner sanctuary, 00:14:27.96\00:14:32.13 it was the most sacred place of the sanctuary. 00:14:32.17\00:14:36.40 This was where God's Shekinah Glory 00:14:36.44\00:14:39.61 would come down and rest on the Ark of the Covenant, 00:14:39.64\00:14:42.98 it was symbolic of His throne room. 00:14:43.01\00:14:46.92 The Holy of Holies was a perfect cube. 00:14:46.95\00:14:50.82 And in 1 Kings 6:20, 00:14:50.85\00:14:53.49 we see that the Holy of Holies, 00:14:53.52\00:14:57.96 the design was duplicated by Solomon in the temple. 00:14:57.99\00:15:01.63 On the screen, 1 Kings 6:20 says, 00:15:01.66\00:15:05.73 "The inner sanctuary, 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.17 the Holy of Holies was twenty cubits long, 00:15:07.20\00:15:10.04 twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high." 00:15:10.07\00:15:15.14 A perfect cube. 00:15:15.18\00:15:16.81 Now to the Hebrew mind, 00:15:16.85\00:15:18.61 a cube was the symbol of perfection 00:15:18.65\00:15:21.38 because it was square on every side, 00:15:21.42\00:15:24.35 and all sides and angles corresponded 00:15:24.39\00:15:27.76 exactly with each other. 00:15:27.79\00:15:29.82 This indicated to them that the Holy One of Israel 00:15:29.86\00:15:33.66 dwelt in perfection. 00:15:33.70\00:15:35.96 God's presence was in the cube. 00:15:36.00\00:15:40.87 What else is a cube in Scripture? 00:15:40.90\00:15:44.14 The New Jerusalem 00:15:44.17\00:15:46.37 that will be the most holy place on earth 00:15:46.41\00:15:50.05 where God will dwell throughout eternity, 00:15:50.08\00:15:52.65 and where all will come in and see His face, 00:15:52.68\00:15:55.88 and experience face to face fellowship with Him. 00:15:55.92\00:15:59.69 In Revelation 21:16, 00:15:59.72\00:16:03.73 this describes the New Jerusalem on the screen. 00:16:03.76\00:16:08.13 "The city is laid out as the square, 00:16:08.16\00:16:10.13 its length is as great as its breath. 00:16:10.17\00:16:12.63 And he measured the city with the reed: 00:16:12.67\00:16:14.60 twelve thousand furlongs. 00:16:14.64\00:16:16.60 Its length, and breadth, and height are equal." 00:16:16.64\00:16:21.28 The New Jerusalem is a perfect cube. 00:16:21.31\00:16:24.71 God's presence is in the cube. 00:16:24.75\00:16:28.25 Even the perfect unselfish love of God 00:16:28.28\00:16:31.99 is described in cubular language. 00:16:32.02\00:16:35.92 Paul told the Ephesians, that he prayed 00:16:35.96\00:16:38.79 that all of the saints would be able to comprehend the width, 00:16:38.83\00:16:43.73 and the length, the depth and the height, 00:16:43.77\00:16:45.83 depth and height, they're of the same dimension. 00:16:45.87\00:16:48.00 But the width, the length, the depth and the height 00:16:48.04\00:16:51.31 of the love of Christ which passes knowledge, 00:16:51.34\00:16:55.21 the Lord our God is one, one times, 00:16:55.24\00:16:58.11 one times one equals one divine being. 00:16:58.15\00:17:02.82 And His presence is in the cube. 00:17:02.85\00:17:06.52 Only one true God, a single divine person... 00:17:06.55\00:17:10.86 Excuse me, a single divine being, 00:17:10.89\00:17:14.16 but the Bible never says a single person. 00:17:14.20\00:17:18.63 Scripture clearly describes God as existing 00:17:18.67\00:17:24.31 in a unique plurality 00:17:24.34\00:17:27.18 of three divine persons who cooperate 00:17:27.21\00:17:30.45 and are in agreement about everything, 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.65 they share the nature of the Godhead, 00:17:32.68\00:17:34.95 they share His personality, His character, 00:17:34.98\00:17:38.82 and the divine attributes of deity. 00:17:38.85\00:17:42.52 Now I have to say this. 00:17:42.56\00:17:44.79 Our triune God is totally unlike anything in our world. 00:17:44.83\00:17:50.77 He is greater than anything that we can comprehend. 00:17:50.80\00:17:55.00 We know and believe, 00:17:55.04\00:17:56.74 and I think you will all agree that God is love, 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.51 that is the essence of His divine nature. 00:17:59.54\00:18:02.74 He is a relational God. 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.75 And in the next 39 minutes, 00:18:04.78\00:18:06.78 we're going to consider a few other things 00:18:06.82\00:18:09.55 that God says about His nature. 00:18:09.58\00:18:13.59 But I am approaching this topic with humility and caution, 00:18:13.62\00:18:18.13 we are on holy ground, 00:18:18.16\00:18:20.56 it is beyond comprehension for the finite human mind 00:18:20.60\00:18:24.83 to understand the nature of God. 00:18:24.87\00:18:28.67 So we don't want to go beyond Scripture, 00:18:28.70\00:18:32.07 we're going to stick to Scripture. 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.71 I started off, I did a study of 150 pages is my notes. 00:18:33.74\00:18:38.91 And then I had to reduce that to 16, 00:18:38.95\00:18:40.92 and I still have too much. 00:18:40.95\00:18:42.58 But I wanted to make sure for myself 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.75 because sometimes you believe something 00:18:45.79\00:18:47.79 and I just wanted to double check. 00:18:47.82\00:18:49.92 But Scripture clearly determines, 00:18:49.96\00:18:52.89 God is self existent, unchangeable, eternal, 00:18:52.93\00:18:56.30 omnipresent, omniscience, omnipotent, 00:18:56.33\00:18:59.10 and incomprehensible. 00:18:59.13\00:19:01.44 Jesus said in John 4:24, 00:19:01.47\00:19:03.44 "That God is Spirit, and those who worship Him 00:19:03.47\00:19:07.98 must worship in Spirit and in truth." 00:19:08.01\00:19:11.51 And Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1:17, 00:19:11.55\00:19:15.68 "God is the king, eternal, 00:19:15.72\00:19:19.75 immortal, and invisible." 00:19:19.79\00:19:22.69 And then again in 1 Timothy in 6:16 he says, 00:19:22.72\00:19:26.19 "God alone has immortality 00:19:26.23\00:19:29.63 who lives, who dwells in an unapproachable life, 00:19:29.66\00:19:34.30 no man has seen Him or can't see Him." 00:19:34.34\00:19:36.74 God is Spirit. 00:19:36.77\00:19:38.11 He is distinct from any material substance. 00:19:38.14\00:19:41.28 He is transcendent. 00:19:41.31\00:19:43.04 He is not subject to the limitations 00:19:43.08\00:19:47.25 of our material universe, yet Scripture is clear. 00:19:47.28\00:19:52.19 As a Spirit, God is not 00:19:52.22\00:19:55.39 a mere impersonal force. 00:19:55.42\00:19:58.99 God interacts with His created beings 00:19:59.03\00:20:02.16 in an intimate and personal manner. 00:20:02.20\00:20:05.73 Now the Bible speaks of God 00:20:05.77\00:20:08.04 in terms of the activities of mankind, 00:20:08.07\00:20:11.21 of walking, sitting, hearing, or seeing. 00:20:11.24\00:20:15.61 But there is a sense 00:20:15.64\00:20:17.45 in which God is not like humanity at all. 00:20:17.48\00:20:20.05 He does not have a physical body like us, 00:20:20.08\00:20:23.45 yet he is a person. 00:20:23.49\00:20:25.45 He is a living entity, 00:20:25.49\00:20:27.26 endeavored with personal properties 00:20:27.29\00:20:29.39 of understanding will and emotion. 00:20:29.42\00:20:31.86 And it is not inaccurate to call God person. 00:20:31.89\00:20:35.90 In the Greek, prosopon is used, 00:20:35.93\00:20:40.64 it translated person, presence, face, countenance, 00:20:40.67\00:20:45.37 and it is used of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:20:45.41\00:20:49.74 Let's look to the screen for Genesis 1:26 and 27. 00:20:49.78\00:20:54.88 "Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, 00:20:54.92\00:21:00.56 according to our likeness," 00:21:00.59\00:21:03.19 here we see God speaking of Himself 00:21:03.22\00:21:05.93 with plural pronouns, 00:21:05.96\00:21:07.66 this expresses communication among the divine beings. 00:21:07.70\00:21:12.83 And then he says, 00:21:12.87\00:21:14.20 "Let them have dominion over the earth. 00:21:14.24\00:21:16.40 So God created man in His own image, 00:21:16.44\00:21:18.94 in the image of God He created the male and female, 00:21:18.97\00:21:21.64 He created them." 00:21:21.68\00:21:23.01 Scripture is not specific 00:21:23.04\00:21:25.91 as what, to what constitutes the image of God. 00:21:25.95\00:21:29.62 In context, the creation of animals and mankind 00:21:29.65\00:21:33.69 were separate acts, we did not evolve from an ape. 00:21:33.72\00:21:37.96 Male and female were created with moral, mental, 00:21:37.99\00:21:41.93 and spiritual capacity to have fellowship with God. 00:21:41.96\00:21:45.63 He walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening, 00:21:45.67\00:21:48.77 in the garden. 00:21:48.80\00:21:50.37 We were created with intelligence 00:21:50.41\00:21:53.27 to exercise free will. 00:21:53.31\00:21:54.91 What a great gift. 00:21:54.94\00:21:56.48 And to have dominion over the earth 00:21:56.51\00:21:58.51 and to procreate. 00:21:58.55\00:22:01.75 But man's fall into sin marred God's image in us. 00:22:01.78\00:22:07.66 1 Corinthians 15, 00:22:07.69\00:22:10.69 just jot that down, but don't turn there. 00:22:10.73\00:22:13.36 We don't have time. 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.53 Paul writes, 00:22:15.56\00:22:16.90 "We have borne the image of the man of dust, 00:22:16.93\00:22:21.50 the first Adam." 00:22:21.54\00:22:23.14 But then He gives us hope. 00:22:23.17\00:22:24.77 "We shall also bear the image of the heavenly man, 00:22:24.81\00:22:29.94 the last Adam." 00:22:29.98\00:22:31.48 At the last trumpet, 00:22:31.51\00:22:33.52 when the redeemed are called forth, 00:22:33.55\00:22:36.25 and put on immortality. 00:22:36.28\00:22:38.89 Let me tell you something, 00:22:38.92\00:22:40.32 the reason I am a Seventh-day Adventist Christian 00:22:40.36\00:22:44.29 is because I believe this church teaches 00:22:44.33\00:22:47.00 more Bible truths than any other. 00:22:47.03\00:22:49.10 And if I found a church that taught more, 00:22:49.13\00:22:52.07 I would join it. 00:22:52.10\00:22:53.90 Our pioneers came from many different denominations, 00:22:53.94\00:22:58.01 many different beliefs, 00:22:58.04\00:23:00.38 but I admire them, that as they got together, 00:23:00.41\00:23:04.31 and they had to consolidate these beliefs. 00:23:04.35\00:23:07.48 They did so through deep study of the Scripture. 00:23:07.52\00:23:12.12 It was a progressive study and often a corrective study. 00:23:12.15\00:23:17.53 They had to accept new truths to them, 00:23:17.56\00:23:20.00 like the Sabbath, diet, righteousness by faith. 00:23:20.03\00:23:23.57 But they also had to release spiritual err, 00:23:23.60\00:23:28.30 like date setting or the closed door policy 00:23:28.34\00:23:32.81 or in my absolute 00:23:32.84\00:23:36.85 strong opinion Semitearianism. 00:23:36.88\00:23:40.25 You see, they were the perfect example 00:23:40.28\00:23:42.22 of Proverbs 4:18. 00:23:42.25\00:23:44.19 The Bible says, 00:23:44.22\00:23:45.82 "The path of the righteous will shine ever brighter 00:23:45.85\00:23:50.53 to the full light of day." 00:23:50.56\00:23:53.06 Our church has 28 fundamental beliefs 00:23:53.09\00:23:56.10 and what I love is that the Bible alone is our creed. 00:23:56.13\00:24:01.50 The second of our 28 fundamental beliefs 00:24:01.54\00:24:05.14 is on the trinity. 00:24:05.17\00:24:06.71 And here's what it states, 00:24:06.74\00:24:09.14 "There is one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, 00:24:09.18\00:24:13.55 a unity of three co-eternal persons." 00:24:13.58\00:24:18.25 See, I am a monotheistic Trinitarian. 00:24:18.29\00:24:22.46 I believe in one divine being, 00:24:22.49\00:24:25.23 who consist of three divine persons. 00:24:25.26\00:24:28.46 Now the word trinity is not in the Bible, 00:24:28.50\00:24:33.00 neither is monotheism, neither is incarnation. 00:24:33.03\00:24:37.37 These are words that we have adopted 00:24:37.41\00:24:40.78 to explain what the Bible teaches. 00:24:40.81\00:24:43.41 Why do we believe in the trinity? 00:24:43.45\00:24:45.91 There are over 50 scriptures, triadic scriptures 00:24:45.95\00:24:51.72 that mention the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:24:51.75\00:24:54.96 I think that is sufficient proof 00:24:54.99\00:24:56.93 to support our doctrine. 00:24:56.96\00:24:58.43 Now the teaching on the Father 00:24:58.46\00:25:00.46 is generally unanimously accepted. 00:25:00.50\00:25:04.33 So I want to begin with Jesus Christ. 00:25:04.37\00:25:07.04 In Philippians 2:5-7, 00:25:07.07\00:25:10.17 this will be on the screen for you. 00:25:10.21\00:25:12.24 Paul writes, "Let this mind be in you 00:25:12.27\00:25:15.38 which was also in Christ Jesus, 00:25:15.41\00:25:17.38 who, being in the form of God," and in the Greek 00:25:17.41\00:25:20.15 that's literally existing in the form of God, 00:25:20.18\00:25:23.75 He possess the essential attributes, 00:25:23.79\00:25:26.35 "did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, " 00:25:26.39\00:25:31.06 because He was, 00:25:31.09\00:25:32.76 "but He made Himself of no reputation, 00:25:32.79\00:25:34.73 taking the form of a bondservant, 00:25:34.76\00:25:36.40 coming in the likeness of men." 00:25:36.43\00:25:38.67 Christ in His pre-incarnate state, 00:25:38.70\00:25:43.07 God of Spirit, Christ was a spiritual being, 00:25:43.10\00:25:46.51 equal to the Father and the Spirit. 00:25:46.54\00:25:48.68 He possessed all the qualities of God. 00:25:48.71\00:25:52.01 He has always been God, and His love for humanity, 00:25:52.05\00:25:56.85 He did not consider that majesty, that equality, 00:25:56.89\00:26:02.29 something to hold on to. 00:26:02.32\00:26:04.33 No, He emptied Himself, not of His divine nature, 00:26:04.36\00:26:08.70 but of His environment of glory. 00:26:08.73\00:26:12.17 And the pre-incarnate Christ came to earth 00:26:12.20\00:26:16.44 as the eternal Son of God. 00:26:16.47\00:26:19.47 In the beginning was the Word of God, 00:26:19.51\00:26:22.04 the Word was with God, the Word was God. 00:26:22.08\00:26:24.51 Eternal God became the last Adam, 00:26:24.55\00:26:28.52 the only begotten Son of God. 00:26:28.55\00:26:31.82 Do you know what only begotten means? 00:26:31.85\00:26:34.16 It actually means unique. 00:26:34.19\00:26:37.83 One of a kind. In 00:26:37.86\00:26:39.19 Hebrews 11, Isaac is referred to 00:26:39.23\00:26:43.16 as the only begotten son of Abraham. 00:26:43.20\00:26:46.94 Oh, wait a minute, Abraham had Ishmael first, 00:26:46.97\00:26:50.67 that was his biological son, then he had many other sons. 00:26:50.71\00:26:54.38 Yet the Bible calls Ishmael, Isaac, 00:26:54.41\00:26:58.71 let's see if I can confuse you. 00:26:58.75\00:27:00.82 The Bible calls Isaac, the only begotten son 00:27:00.85\00:27:06.45 because Isaac was unique to God's promise. 00:27:06.49\00:27:10.93 The Gospel of Luke refers to Adam 00:27:10.96\00:27:14.26 as the son of God. 00:27:14.30\00:27:16.43 When the King of kings and Lord of lords 00:27:16.46\00:27:18.43 took humanity upon Himself, in the limitation of humanity, 00:27:18.47\00:27:23.61 He became the last Adam. 00:27:23.64\00:27:27.24 And He came to earth in 00:27:27.28\00:27:30.71 as the only begotten Son of God, 00:27:30.75\00:27:33.55 the unique covenant Son of promise, 00:27:33.58\00:27:36.69 for temporary subordinate role to the Father. 00:27:36.72\00:27:40.12 In Colossians 1:17, Paul writes, 00:27:40.16\00:27:43.96 "He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." 00:27:43.99\00:27:49.36 Jesus said, "Before Abraham was I am." 00:27:49.40\00:27:53.74 He said, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, 00:27:53.77\00:27:56.24 the first and the last." 00:27:56.27\00:27:58.37 And in Colossians 2:9, 00:27:58.41\00:28:00.18 Paul says, "In Him, in Christ dwells 00:28:00.21\00:28:04.25 all the fullness of the Godhead bodily." 00:28:04.28\00:28:07.68 Christ has always possessed all the attributes of God, 00:28:07.72\00:28:12.75 just as I believe does the Holy Spirit. 00:28:12.79\00:28:15.92 In the Old Testament, two advents were promised, 00:28:15.96\00:28:20.63 the advent of our Messiah Savior, 00:28:20.66\00:28:25.17 and the advent of the Holy Spirit. 00:28:25.20\00:28:28.64 Now we have to understand, 00:28:28.67\00:28:31.07 the Bible is a progressive 00:28:31.11\00:28:34.74 self revelation of God. 00:28:34.78\00:28:38.71 Theological concepts that are introduced 00:28:38.75\00:28:41.65 in the Old Testament are more fully developed 00:28:41.68\00:28:46.19 in the New Testament. 00:28:46.22\00:28:48.42 Both the Messiah and the Holy Spirit 00:28:48.46\00:28:52.33 were promised and introduced in the Old Testament and both, 00:28:52.36\00:28:57.27 the theological concept 00:28:57.30\00:28:59.13 is more fully developed in the new. 00:28:59.17\00:29:01.17 Now in our limited time, 00:29:01.20\00:29:02.54 I can't consider the Holy Spirit's activity 00:29:02.57\00:29:05.01 in the process of salvation. 00:29:05.04\00:29:07.48 I simply want to establish from Scripture, 00:29:07.51\00:29:10.85 that he is a person and a person of the Godhead. 00:29:10.88\00:29:15.85 Now I'm defining person as an individual 00:29:15.88\00:29:20.06 of conscious intelligent existence 00:29:20.09\00:29:24.13 who is not an animal. 00:29:24.16\00:29:25.63 For example, we think of the Angel Gabriel, 00:29:25.66\00:29:30.07 who is a ministering Spirit, as a person. 00:29:30.10\00:29:33.67 We think of Satan, who is an evil spirit, 00:29:33.70\00:29:38.04 as a person. 00:29:38.07\00:29:39.41 And Jesus said, "God is Spirit." 00:29:39.44\00:29:42.51 We certainly consider Him as a person. 00:29:42.54\00:29:45.55 The Holy Spirit is not 00:29:45.58\00:29:47.15 a mere influencing emanation of virtual power. 00:29:47.18\00:29:52.45 He is a conscious intelligent person. 00:29:52.49\00:29:55.46 Some professed Christians flatly deny 00:29:55.49\00:29:58.39 the Holy Spirit is a person. 00:29:58.43\00:29:59.76 And one of the things I've heard, 00:29:59.79\00:30:02.00 you know, in the Greek, the word for Spirit is pneuma. 00:30:02.03\00:30:05.33 And it can also mean breath and wind. 00:30:05.37\00:30:08.80 So to suggest that the Holy Spirit 00:30:08.84\00:30:11.31 is just the breath of God and emanating virtue of power. 00:30:11.34\00:30:16.75 What anti-Trinitarians do is that they point to John 3:38 00:30:16.78\00:30:20.25 where Jesus said, 00:30:20.28\00:30:21.62 "The wind blows where it wishes." 00:30:21.65\00:30:23.69 You can hear it, you can't tell where it comes from 00:30:23.72\00:30:26.86 or where it goes, 00:30:26.89\00:30:28.22 so is everyone born of the Spirit. 00:30:28.26\00:30:30.56 This does not disprove 00:30:30.59\00:30:32.99 the personhood of the Holy Spirit. 00:30:33.03\00:30:36.30 It simply expresses a motive operation 00:30:36.33\00:30:40.14 like Jesus said, "I am the gate. 00:30:40.17\00:30:41.74 I am divine. I am the door. I am the bread of life." 00:30:41.77\00:30:46.24 It is a mode of operation. 00:30:46.27\00:30:48.71 Now some consider the Holy Spirit 00:30:48.74\00:30:50.71 an energy force from God 00:30:50.75\00:30:52.78 because He was, Acts says He was poured out 00:30:52.81\00:30:56.45 that He was shed a blood. 00:30:56.48\00:30:57.82 But the same language is used of the Messiah 00:30:57.85\00:31:01.62 in Isaiah 53:12. 00:31:01.66\00:31:03.99 It says, "He poured out His soul unto death." 00:31:04.03\00:31:08.96 See, the word poured out in the Hebrew 00:31:09.00\00:31:12.10 literally means to expose or make naked. 00:31:12.13\00:31:16.84 This was a metaphor that the Messiah 00:31:16.87\00:31:19.87 fully exposed Himself 00:31:19.91\00:31:22.21 to the naked reality of death on our behalf. 00:31:22.24\00:31:25.85 The Holy Spirit poured out His figurative language, 00:31:25.88\00:31:30.69 it is a metaphor of Him descending. 00:31:30.72\00:31:34.06 When water is poured out, it descends, 00:31:34.09\00:31:37.13 the Holy Spirit descended from heaven to earth. 00:31:37.16\00:31:40.90 I believe that the public advent 00:31:40.93\00:31:42.96 of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost 00:31:43.00\00:31:45.90 was second in importance only to the incarnation 00:31:45.93\00:31:51.84 of our Lord at the advent of Jesus Christ. 00:31:51.87\00:31:55.41 He became incarnate, Jesus became flesh, 00:31:55.44\00:31:59.91 so that He could become the last Adam, 00:31:59.95\00:32:03.22 so that He could get it right, as humanity's representative 00:32:03.25\00:32:08.56 to get it right, to be faithful to God, 00:32:08.59\00:32:11.33 and also to be our substitutionary sacrifice 00:32:11.36\00:32:14.90 on the cross for our sins. 00:32:14.93\00:32:17.33 Or the advent of the Holy Spirit 00:32:17.37\00:32:20.54 was also for incarnation that He would live, 00:32:20.57\00:32:26.51 dwell in Christ redeemed, for the purpose of ushering 00:32:26.54\00:32:30.95 and in ministering the new covenant. 00:32:30.98\00:32:33.52 The same Holy Spirit 00:32:33.55\00:32:35.58 who had been active among the people 00:32:35.62\00:32:37.92 from the beginning of time. 00:32:37.95\00:32:39.75 You'll probably remember in Genesis 6:3, 00:32:39.79\00:32:42.56 Jesus or God says, 00:32:42.59\00:32:44.46 "My Spirit will not strive with man forever." 00:32:44.49\00:32:49.36 The Holy Spirit has always been with us. 00:32:49.40\00:32:52.17 But the spirit who had led the disciples 00:32:52.20\00:32:55.00 working alongside them in companion ministry 00:32:55.04\00:32:58.07 would now be dwelling inside them. 00:32:58.11\00:33:01.44 After Pentecost, 00:33:01.48\00:33:03.55 He came to live in all believers 00:33:03.58\00:33:06.95 because that is God's great desire 00:33:06.98\00:33:09.22 is to be with His people. 00:33:09.25\00:33:10.99 1 Corinthians 3:16, Paul says, 00:33:11.02\00:33:13.15 "Do you not know that you are the temple of God 00:33:13.19\00:33:18.23 and that the Holy Spirit dwells in you." 00:33:18.26\00:33:21.86 This demonstrates how personal and relational our God is. 00:33:21.90\00:33:26.80 Now some believe that the Holy Spirit is Jesus. 00:33:26.84\00:33:30.97 And Jesus expressly disclaims that. 00:33:31.01\00:33:34.58 Let's look at John 14. 00:33:34.61\00:33:37.85 We're going to actually consider 6:16-18. 00:33:37.88\00:33:41.35 But let's focus on John 14:16. 00:33:41.38\00:33:44.55 Jesus said, "I will pray the Father, 00:33:44.59\00:33:46.82 and He will give you another..." 00:33:46.86\00:33:49.82 Now that's a significant word, we'll come back to it. 00:33:49.86\00:33:52.86 "Another helper," in the Greek it is allos paracletos, 00:33:52.89\00:33:58.23 "that He," this other helper, "may abide with you forever." 00:33:58.27\00:34:03.51 A paracletos is a person, there is not one English word 00:34:03.54\00:34:09.14 that can translate that. 00:34:09.18\00:34:10.65 A paracletos was an advocate, a legal assistant, 00:34:10.68\00:34:14.18 who defended someone's cause. 00:34:14.22\00:34:16.82 He was an intercessor, a counselor, 00:34:16.85\00:34:19.19 a comforter, a helper. 00:34:19.22\00:34:21.16 In His earthly ministry, 00:34:21.19\00:34:23.19 Jesus was our paracletos on earth. 00:34:23.22\00:34:26.13 But He returned to the Father, to prepare a place for us. 00:34:26.16\00:34:30.27 And after making the atonement for sin, 00:34:30.30\00:34:33.23 Christ became our paracletos in heaven. 00:34:33.27\00:34:36.10 In 1 John 2:1, John says, "If any one sins, 00:34:36.14\00:34:41.24 we have an advocate, in the Greek, 00:34:41.28\00:34:43.71 a paracletos with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous." 00:34:43.75\00:34:48.78 So taking his absence from earth, 00:34:48.82\00:34:50.72 Jesus said, "He would send 00:34:50.75\00:34:53.76 another paracletos." 00:34:53.79\00:34:57.83 Another is significant because in the Greek 00:34:57.86\00:35:00.63 there are two words for another. 00:35:00.66\00:35:04.40 Heteros is another of a different kind. 00:35:04.43\00:35:09.24 Allos is another of the same kind. 00:35:09.27\00:35:13.27 Jesus used allos, allos paracletos, 00:35:13.31\00:35:18.61 another of a like kind. 00:35:18.65\00:35:20.82 Jesus was saying, 00:35:20.85\00:35:22.85 "I am sending one who is just like Me." 00:35:22.88\00:35:27.92 The Holy Spirit has the same character as Christ. 00:35:27.96\00:35:32.16 He is God, no comparison could be made 00:35:32.19\00:35:35.46 between a person and a mere Jesus Christ too 00:35:35.50\00:35:38.73 as a person in a mere abstract influence. 00:35:38.77\00:35:42.27 So Christ was signifying that the Holy Spirit 00:35:42.30\00:35:44.77 would take His own place as God's advocate 00:35:44.81\00:35:48.38 with humanity on earth to take up 00:35:48.41\00:35:51.01 where Jesus' earthly ministry left off. 00:35:51.05\00:35:54.85 He would teach and comfort us, 00:35:54.88\00:35:56.69 advice and defend, and intercede for us. 00:35:56.72\00:35:59.75 So now let's continue with verse 17, John 14:17. 00:35:59.79\00:36:04.66 Christ Identifies this allos paracletos as, 00:36:04.69\00:36:09.46 "The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, 00:36:09.50\00:36:14.34 because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, 00:36:14.37\00:36:16.74 but you know Him, 00:36:16.77\00:36:18.57 for He dwells with you and will be in you. 00:36:18.61\00:36:21.34 I will not leave you as orphans, 00:36:21.38\00:36:23.41 I will come to you." 00:36:23.45\00:36:25.18 What did Jesus mean, 00:36:25.21\00:36:26.61 I will not leave you as orphans? 00:36:26.65\00:36:28.98 What does that promise mean? 00:36:29.02\00:36:30.85 Within context, 00:36:30.89\00:36:32.22 He is referring to the advent of the Holy Spirit 00:36:32.25\00:36:34.32 at Pentecost. 00:36:34.36\00:36:35.72 When the Holy Spirit dwells in you, 00:36:35.76\00:36:39.13 the Father and the Son dwell in you by faith, 00:36:39.16\00:36:43.57 because the three are one. 00:36:43.60\00:36:46.13 Look at Ephesians 3:16, 00:36:46.17\00:36:49.20 Ephesians 3:16, it will be on the screen. 00:36:49.24\00:36:52.07 Paul praise, "That god would grant you, 00:36:52.11\00:36:54.51 according to the riches of His glory, 00:36:54.54\00:36:56.14 to be strengthened with might through His Spirit, " 00:36:56.18\00:36:59.88 His Holy Spirit, "in the inner man, 00:36:59.91\00:37:02.35 that Christ may dwell in your hearts," how? 00:37:02.38\00:37:05.92 "Through faith, 00:37:05.95\00:37:07.69 that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 00:37:07.72\00:37:09.32 may be able to comprehend with all the saints 00:37:09.36\00:37:11.43 what is the width and length and depth and height 00:37:11.46\00:37:13.66 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, 00:37:13.70\00:37:17.23 that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." 00:37:17.27\00:37:20.87 In John 14:23, Jesus made another promise. 00:37:20.90\00:37:24.97 He says, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, 00:37:25.01\00:37:30.15 and My Father will love him, and We will come to him 00:37:30.18\00:37:35.45 and make Our home with him." 00:37:35.48\00:37:37.45 Where the Holy Spirit dwells, the Father and the Son 00:37:37.49\00:37:41.06 dwell by faith. 00:37:41.09\00:37:42.92 They are equal one times, one times one equals one. 00:37:42.96\00:37:46.46 I believe the Word of God unequivocally teaches 00:37:46.49\00:37:49.70 that the Holy Spirit is as much a conscious intelligent person 00:37:49.73\00:37:53.74 as the Father and the Son. 00:37:53.77\00:37:55.47 All elements that constitute personhood and deity 00:37:55.50\00:37:59.24 are ascribed to and found in the Holy Spirit. 00:37:59.27\00:38:02.88 We're going to look at five points from Scripture 00:38:02.91\00:38:06.78 that show He is the person, He's endowed with wisdom, 00:38:06.82\00:38:09.72 understanding, and a will, he's endowed with emotions, 00:38:09.75\00:38:12.25 with speech and a mind that formulates thought, 00:38:12.29\00:38:15.16 He intercedes, Christ intercedes, 00:38:15.19\00:38:17.29 He teaches and bears witness. 00:38:17.33\00:38:19.09 Then if we have time, we will look at five points 00:38:19.13\00:38:21.73 that show His deity that He is holy eternal, 00:38:21.76\00:38:25.30 omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. 00:38:25.33\00:38:29.70 So point number one, as Christ... 00:38:29.74\00:38:33.44 Excuse me. 00:38:33.48\00:38:36.58 As a person the Holy Spirit is endowed with wisdom, 00:38:36.61\00:38:41.02 understanding, and a will. 00:38:41.05\00:38:42.98 Look at 1 Corinthians 2:10 and 11. 00:38:43.02\00:38:47.66 It says, "God revealed them to us through His Spirit. 00:38:47.69\00:38:51.53 For the Spirit searches," that's an act of understanding, 00:38:51.56\00:38:55.86 "the Spirit searches all things, 00:38:55.90\00:38:57.53 yes, the deep things of God. 00:38:57.57\00:38:58.90 For what man knows the things of a man 00:38:58.93\00:39:01.14 except the spirit of the man which is in him?" 00:39:01.17\00:39:03.77 Now here in the Greek, this is the self consciousness 00:39:03.81\00:39:06.27 that resides in a man or a woman, 00:39:06.31\00:39:08.34 "Even so no one knows the things of God 00:39:08.38\00:39:11.15 except the Spirit of God." 00:39:11.18\00:39:12.98 That is a totally different Greek construction. 00:39:13.01\00:39:16.55 It is not merely the self-consciousness of God, 00:39:16.58\00:39:19.15 but the personal Holy Spirit 00:39:19.19\00:39:21.66 in His relation to God, the Father." 00:39:21.69\00:39:24.46 Then in 1 Corinthians 12:11, 00:39:24.49\00:39:27.93 Paul speaking of spiritual gifts 00:39:27.96\00:39:29.80 given by God. 00:39:29.83\00:39:31.17 And 1 Corinthians 12:11 says this, 00:39:31.20\00:39:33.00 "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, 00:39:33.03\00:39:36.64 distributing to each one individually 00:39:36.67\00:39:40.98 as He wills." 00:39:41.01\00:39:43.85 The Holy Spirit is endowed with a will, 00:39:43.88\00:39:49.02 He operates with divine prerogative. 00:39:49.05\00:39:52.89 Paul's language would be meaningless if the Spirit 00:39:52.92\00:39:56.22 were only an influencing energy. 00:39:56.26\00:39:59.46 Now open your Bibles if you have them please 00:39:59.49\00:40:02.00 to Acts 13. 00:40:02.03\00:40:05.80 Acts follows Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:40:05.83\00:40:08.37 Acts is the history of the first 30 years 00:40:08.40\00:40:12.37 of the early church. 00:40:12.41\00:40:13.74 We're going to read three scriptures 00:40:13.78\00:40:15.61 to prove His divine prerogative. 00:40:15.64\00:40:19.31 Acts Chapter 13, let's look at verse 2. 00:40:19.35\00:40:23.18 We'll see the Holy Spirit chose church leaders, 00:40:23.22\00:40:26.62 He commanded and exercised authority. 00:40:26.65\00:40:29.52 Acts 13:2, "As they ministered to the Lord invested, 00:40:29.56\00:40:33.13 the Holy Spirit said," 00:40:33.16\00:40:35.10 now you've got to be able to speak to say something, 00:40:35.13\00:40:37.80 and here's what the Holy Spirit said, 00:40:37.83\00:40:39.87 "Now separate to me Barnabas and Saul for the work 00:40:39.90\00:40:43.74 to which I have called them." 00:40:43.77\00:40:46.88 Now flip over to Acts 15. 00:40:46.91\00:40:49.64 Acts 15, look at verse 28 because the Holy Spirit 00:40:49.68\00:40:54.32 lead in church decisions. 00:40:54.35\00:40:56.72 Acts 15:28, James says, 00:40:56.75\00:40:59.42 "For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit 00:40:59.45\00:41:01.39 and to us to lay upon you, no greater burden 00:41:01.42\00:41:05.86 than these necessary things." 00:41:05.89\00:41:08.80 So now flip to Acts 16. 00:41:08.83\00:41:11.67 Acts 16:6. 00:41:11.70\00:41:14.04 The Holy Spirit led in the directing 00:41:14.07\00:41:17.31 of where the gospel would be preached. 00:41:17.34\00:41:20.18 Act 16:6. 00:41:20.21\00:41:21.98 "Now when they gone through Phrygia 00:41:22.01\00:41:23.85 and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by," whom? 00:41:23.88\00:41:27.98 "They were forbidden by the Holy Spirit 00:41:28.02\00:41:30.92 to preach the word in Asia. 00:41:30.95\00:41:33.25 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go to Bithynia, 00:41:33.29\00:41:37.36 but the Spirit did not permit them." 00:41:37.39\00:41:42.16 So keep your finger there in Acts 00:41:42.20\00:41:44.13 'cause we're going to come back there. 00:41:44.17\00:41:45.57 Point number two, as a person 00:41:45.60\00:41:48.67 the Holy Spirit is endowed with emotions. 00:41:48.70\00:41:53.41 So we'll look to the screen for the next three scriptures. 00:41:53.44\00:41:56.38 Romans 15:30, Paul says, "Now I beg you, brethren, 00:41:56.41\00:42:00.52 through the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:42:00.55\00:42:02.45 and through the love of the Spirit, 00:42:02.48\00:42:07.29 that you strive together with me 00:42:07.32\00:42:09.89 in prayers to God for me. 00:42:09.92\00:42:11.86 The Spirit loves." 00:42:11.89\00:42:14.06 Ephesians 4:30, 00:42:14.10\00:42:17.37 Paul writes, "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, 00:42:17.40\00:42:23.07 by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." 00:42:23.10\00:42:27.74 Only a person can be grieved. 00:42:27.78\00:42:31.41 Then in Hebrews 10:29, 00:42:31.45\00:42:34.85 it is written, 00:42:34.88\00:42:36.22 "Of how much worse punishment do you suppose, 00:42:36.25\00:42:38.85 will be thought worthy, 00:42:38.89\00:42:40.66 who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, 00:42:40.69\00:42:44.23 counted the blood of the covenant 00:42:44.26\00:42:45.93 by which he was sanctified a common thing, 00:42:45.96\00:42:48.46 and insulted the Spirit of grace?" 00:42:48.50\00:42:52.90 Only a person can be insulted. 00:42:52.93\00:42:56.57 So now you've got your finger next, 00:42:56.60\00:42:58.27 let's turn to Acts Chapter 5. 00:42:58.31\00:43:01.08 We have seen the Holy Spirit loves, 00:43:01.11\00:43:03.78 He grieves, he can be insulted. 00:43:03.81\00:43:06.72 Acts 5:3. Acts 5:3. 00:43:06.75\00:43:11.95 "Peter said, 'Ananias, why is Satan filled your heart 00:43:11.99\00:43:16.12 to lie to the Holy Spirit.' " 00:43:16.16\00:43:18.46 Only a person can be lied to. 00:43:18.49\00:43:20.16 you got to hear to receive testimony 00:43:20.20\00:43:23.00 and keep back part of the price of the lamb for yourself. 00:43:23.03\00:43:25.97 While it remained, was it not your own, 00:43:26.00\00:43:27.70 and after it was sold. 00:43:27.74\00:43:29.74 Was it not in your own control? 00:43:29.77\00:43:32.27 Why have you conceive this thing in your heart? 00:43:32.31\00:43:35.21 You have not lied? 00:43:35.24\00:43:38.61 Who did He lied to? 00:43:38.65\00:43:39.98 The Holy Spirit. 00:43:40.02\00:43:41.35 You have not lied to men, but to God. 00:43:41.38\00:43:46.55 So if lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God, 00:43:46.59\00:43:51.53 the Spirit must be God. 00:43:51.56\00:43:53.70 Now jump down to verse 9. 00:43:53.73\00:43:56.10 Peter's now talking to... 00:43:56.13\00:43:58.50 This is Acts 5:9, 00:43:58.53\00:44:00.87 "Peter's talking to Sapphira and he says to her, 00:44:00.90\00:44:04.27 'How is it that you've agreed to test to tempt 00:44:04.31\00:44:08.48 the Spirit of the Lord? 00:44:08.51\00:44:09.94 Only a person can be tempted.' " 00:44:09.98\00:44:12.91 Now on the screen, Mark 3:28-30. 00:44:12.95\00:44:18.85 This is a sobering passage. 00:44:18.89\00:44:21.02 Jesus is speaking and He says, "Assuredly I say to you, 00:44:21.06\00:44:24.86 all sins will be forgiven, the sins of men, 00:44:24.89\00:44:27.10 and whatever blasphemies they may utter, 00:44:27.13\00:44:29.50 but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit 00:44:29.53\00:44:32.83 never has forgiveness, 00:44:32.87\00:44:34.64 but is subject to eternalcondemnation..." 00:44:34.67\00:44:37.64 Verse 30 explains why he said this 00:44:37.67\00:44:40.31 because they said, "He has an unclean spirit." 00:44:40.34\00:44:44.35 An unclean spirit was a fallen angel, 00:44:44.38\00:44:46.75 a demonic spirit, a person. 00:44:46.78\00:44:49.68 So this is clear proof that the Holy Spirit's a person. 00:44:49.72\00:44:52.99 If he weren't a person, 00:44:53.02\00:44:54.36 no comparative opposition could be made 00:44:54.39\00:44:57.46 between Him and an unclean spirit. 00:44:57.49\00:45:00.23 But it is more, 00:45:00.26\00:45:02.30 it is clear proof that the Holy Spirit is God 00:45:02.33\00:45:08.07 because only God can be blasphemed. 00:45:08.10\00:45:13.58 Now point number three, 00:45:13.61\00:45:15.44 as the person the Holy Spirit is endowed with speech 00:45:15.48\00:45:19.58 and a mind that can formulate thoughts. 00:45:19.61\00:45:21.82 Turn quickly to Acts Chapter 8. 00:45:21.85\00:45:24.05 Hope you've still got your finger there. 00:45:24.09\00:45:26.15 We're going to look at a few of the many, many examples 00:45:26.19\00:45:31.69 that attribute speech to the Holy Spirit. 00:45:31.73\00:45:36.16 Acts 8:29, 00:45:36.20\00:45:39.30 "Then the Spirit said to Philip, " 00:45:39.33\00:45:43.17 here's a quote of the Spirit, 00:45:43.20\00:45:45.57 "Go near, and overtake this chariot." 00:45:45.61\00:45:49.28 The Spirit was directing Philip. 00:45:49.31\00:45:52.05 Flip over to Acts 10. 00:45:52.08\00:45:54.85 Acts 10 will say he speaks to Peter 00:45:54.88\00:45:59.05 in verse 19 and 20. 00:45:59.09\00:46:00.82 While, Peter... 00:46:00.86\00:46:02.19 Acts 10:19, 00:46:02.22\00:46:04.39 "While Peter thought about the vision, 00:46:04.43\00:46:06.90 the Spirit said to him, 00:46:06.93\00:46:11.47 'Behold, three men are seeking you. 00:46:11.50\00:46:13.60 Arise therefore, go down, and go with him, 00:46:13.64\00:46:17.57 doubting nothing for I have sent them.' " 00:46:17.61\00:46:21.78 Only a person, 00:46:21.81\00:46:24.78 a person of the Godhead can speak 00:46:24.81\00:46:27.82 and exercise divine prerogative. 00:46:27.85\00:46:32.05 In 1 Timothy 4:1 on the screen. 00:46:32.09\00:46:36.12 It says, "Now the Spirit expressly says, " 00:46:36.16\00:46:39.49 he's not vague in his speech, 00:46:39.53\00:46:41.46 "that in latter times 00:46:41.50\00:46:43.23 some will depart from the faith, 00:46:43.26\00:46:46.94 giving heed to deceiving spirits 00:46:46.97\00:46:49.70 and doctrines of demons." 00:46:49.74\00:46:52.61 The Holy Spirit in clear words warns us 00:46:52.64\00:46:56.54 that apostasy would be caused by evil spirits. 00:46:56.58\00:46:59.95 Now I want you just to listen to this, 00:46:59.98\00:47:02.28 it won't be on the screen. 00:47:02.32\00:47:04.32 But this is an Old Testament text. 00:47:04.35\00:47:07.26 It comes from Isaiah 63:10. 00:47:07.29\00:47:11.59 And it says, 00:47:11.63\00:47:12.96 "They rebelled 00:47:12.99\00:47:14.66 and grieved His Holy Spirit. 00:47:14.70\00:47:19.03 So he, the Spirit, 00:47:19.07\00:47:21.24 turned himself against them as an enemy 00:47:21.27\00:47:23.81 and he fought against them." 00:47:23.84\00:47:26.17 Now let's look at Hebrews 3:7 on the screen 00:47:26.21\00:47:30.58 because these two tie in together. 00:47:30.61\00:47:33.98 Hebrews 3:7, 00:47:34.02\00:47:35.42 "Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: 00:47:35.45\00:47:39.02 'Today, if you will hear His voice, 00:47:39.05\00:47:40.69 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. 00:47:40.72\00:47:42.92 In the day of the trial in the wilderness, 00:47:42.96\00:47:45.29 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, 00:47:45.33\00:47:49.96 and saw My works for forty years." 00:47:50.00\00:47:52.53 See how those two dovetailed together. 00:47:52.57\00:47:56.54 This is a quote from Psalm 95, where God is speaking. 00:47:56.57\00:48:01.58 And it is attributed 00:48:01.61\00:48:04.15 to the speech of the Holy Spirit. 00:48:04.18\00:48:06.25 Point number four, the Holy Spirit intercedes, 00:48:06.28\00:48:10.95 the Holy Spirit intercedes. 00:48:10.99\00:48:13.19 "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. 00:48:13.22\00:48:16.49 For we do not know 00:48:16.52\00:48:17.86 what we should pray for as we ought, 00:48:17.89\00:48:19.29 but the Spirit Himself..." 00:48:19.33\00:48:21.53 Now in the King James Version, 00:48:21.56\00:48:23.60 it says the Spirit itself. 00:48:23.63\00:48:25.77 "But the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us 00:48:25.80\00:48:29.17 with groanings which cannot be uttered." 00:48:29.20\00:48:32.11 Christ intercession to the Father 00:48:32.14\00:48:34.28 proved that He was a person distinct from the Father. 00:48:34.31\00:48:38.01 The same for the Holy Spirit, his intercession proves, 00:48:38.05\00:48:42.52 he is distinct personhood. 00:48:42.55\00:48:44.95 Now there is much fuss about the King James Version 00:48:44.99\00:48:49.16 and the translator saying, "The Spirit itself..." 00:48:49.19\00:48:53.40 Let me tell you something, 00:48:53.43\00:48:54.90 in the Greek that is grammatically correct. 00:48:54.93\00:48:57.10 Spirit is neuter gender. 00:48:57.13\00:49:00.54 But other translators came along 00:49:00.57\00:49:03.04 and they changed it to the Spirit Himself 00:49:03.07\00:49:06.01 because every time 00:49:06.04\00:49:08.81 Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit, 00:49:08.84\00:49:12.78 He used the emphatic male personal pronouns, 00:49:12.81\00:49:18.32 He, Him, or Himself 00:49:18.35\00:49:21.42 when referring to the Holy Spirit. 00:49:21.46\00:49:24.83 I believe it is a grave error to use it or itself 00:49:24.86\00:49:29.46 when referring to the Holy Spirit, 00:49:29.50\00:49:30.93 even though it's grammatically correct 00:49:30.97\00:49:33.64 because Spirit is neuter gender. 00:49:33.67\00:49:36.20 But we wouldn't say, "God is Spirit, " 00:49:36.24\00:49:40.41 and when you worship it, worship in Spirit and truth 00:49:40.44\00:49:44.51 because we know 00:49:44.55\00:49:48.18 that God is a person. 00:49:48.22\00:49:51.15 Under our next point, 00:49:51.19\00:49:52.52 we're going to look at two scriptures. 00:49:52.55\00:49:53.89 The first one says, "Jesus says, 00:49:53.92\00:49:55.62 'The Father will send the Spirit.' " 00:49:55.66\00:49:57.43 The second one, He says, "I will send the Spirit." 00:49:57.46\00:50:00.36 There is no contradiction in this 00:50:00.40\00:50:02.70 because they always act in concert. 00:50:02.73\00:50:05.50 So point number five, the Holy Spirit teaches 00:50:05.53\00:50:10.01 and bears witness. 00:50:10.04\00:50:11.87 John 14:26. 00:50:11.91\00:50:14.78 John 14:26, "But the helper, 00:50:14.81\00:50:17.85 the paracletos, the Holy Spirit 00:50:18.85\00:50:21.45 whom the Father will send in My name, He," 00:50:21.48\00:50:26.02 Jesus is using that personal male pronoun, 00:50:26.05\00:50:28.99 "will teach you all things." 00:50:29.02\00:50:31.76 In other words, He's all knowing, 00:50:31.79\00:50:33.13 He's omniscient. 00:50:33.16\00:50:34.50 "He will bring to your remembrance 00:50:34.53\00:50:35.86 all things that I said to you." 00:50:35.90\00:50:37.47 He teaches both the new and the old. 00:50:37.50\00:50:40.80 Christ constantly used he and him 00:50:40.84\00:50:44.47 in referring to the Holy Spirit. 00:50:44.51\00:50:47.44 Let me ask you, do you think 00:50:47.48\00:50:50.35 our Savior would have employed language 00:50:50.38\00:50:54.88 that would confuse His disciples? 00:50:54.92\00:50:58.32 Would we dare accuse Him of such a frightful error? 00:50:58.35\00:51:04.16 There's no other alternative than to regard the Holy Spirit 00:51:04.19\00:51:09.63 as another person of the Godhead. 00:51:09.66\00:51:12.43 John 15:26, "Jesus says, 'But when the Helper comes, 00:51:12.47\00:51:18.37 whom I shall send you 00:51:18.41\00:51:20.78 from the Father, the Spirit of truth 00:51:20.81\00:51:23.51 who proceeds from the Father, " 00:51:23.55\00:51:25.75 and in the Greek the literal is that He proceeds 00:51:25.78\00:51:29.88 from beside the Father, 00:51:29.92\00:51:32.35 "He, this Holy Spirit, will testify of Me." 00:51:32.39\00:51:37.33 Jesus said about seven times that He would give 00:51:37.36\00:51:39.93 or send the Holy Spirit. 00:51:39.96\00:51:41.46 To me that's additional proof that the Spirit is a person 00:51:41.50\00:51:44.47 or Jesus' language would be useless, it would be senseless. 00:51:44.50\00:51:47.30 He called this the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. 00:51:47.34\00:51:52.27 His disciples didn't grasp all the truths 00:51:52.31\00:51:54.74 that Jesus tried to teach them while on earth. 00:51:54.78\00:51:58.35 But when the Spirit came, He made it plain to them. 00:51:58.38\00:52:02.45 Spirit guided Bible study is progressive, 00:52:02.48\00:52:07.59 there is a progressive understanding of the truth 00:52:07.62\00:52:10.26 as we are ready to receive it. 00:52:10.29\00:52:13.09 And the Spirit will never teach us anything 00:52:13.13\00:52:15.63 that is not in Scripture. 00:52:15.66\00:52:17.37 In Romans 8:16, 00:52:17.40\00:52:20.14 it says, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit 00:52:20.17\00:52:23.77 that we are children of God." 00:52:23.81\00:52:25.71 Bears witness is a forensic term. 00:52:25.74\00:52:28.98 It denotes that He is supplying evidence, 00:52:29.01\00:52:31.98 legal proof, and only an intelligent being 00:52:32.01\00:52:37.25 could perform this function. 00:52:37.29\00:52:39.19 The Holy Spirit is a person. 00:52:39.22\00:52:42.62 Now Scripture clearly and abundantly shows us 00:52:42.66\00:52:48.26 that the Holy Spirit has the attributes of deity 00:52:48.30\00:52:51.93 that are peculiar to God. 00:52:51.97\00:52:55.00 First the Holy Spirit is imminently holy 00:52:55.04\00:52:58.21 as His name indicates. 00:52:58.24\00:53:00.34 But the Holy Spirit is eternal and attribute 00:53:00.38\00:53:03.95 that is exclusive to God. 00:53:03.98\00:53:06.18 In Hebrews 9:14, it says, 00:53:06.21\00:53:09.32 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, 00:53:09.35\00:53:11.82 who through the eternal Spirit," 00:53:11.85\00:53:14.39 and remember God can be called eternal, 00:53:14.42\00:53:16.83 "offered Himself without spot to God, 00:53:16.86\00:53:19.59 cleanse your conscience from dead works 00:53:19.63\00:53:22.10 to serve the living God." 00:53:22.13\00:53:24.80 He also... 00:53:24.83\00:53:26.87 Point number eight is omniscient, 00:53:26.90\00:53:29.50 He is all knowing. 00:53:29.54\00:53:31.24 We've already reviewed John 14:26 when Jesus said, 00:53:31.27\00:53:34.78 "He's going to send the Holy Spirit, 00:53:34.81\00:53:36.91 who would teach us all things and bring to our remembrance, 00:53:36.95\00:53:41.18 everything He said." 00:53:41.22\00:53:42.78 Point number nine, He is omnipresent. 00:53:42.82\00:53:45.79 He is everywhere. 00:53:45.82\00:53:47.59 In Psalm 139:7-10, 00:53:47.62\00:53:52.36 we're just going to read 7 and 8. 00:53:52.39\00:53:54.53 He says, 00:53:54.56\00:53:55.90 "Where can I go from Your Spirit? 00:53:55.93\00:53:58.43 Or where can I flee from Your presence? 00:53:58.47\00:54:01.07 If I ascend into heaven, You are there, 00:54:01.10\00:54:03.51 if I make my bed in hell," 00:54:03.54\00:54:05.41 speaking of the grave, 00:54:05.44\00:54:06.84 "behold, You are there. 00:54:06.88\00:54:08.64 And He is..." 00:54:08.68\00:54:10.35 The tenth point, omnipotent. 00:54:10.38\00:54:13.11 Luke 1:35, "The angel said and said to her, 00:54:13.15\00:54:17.52 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you. 00:54:17.55\00:54:19.85 And the power of the highest will overshadow you. 00:54:19.89\00:54:22.12 Therefore, also the Holy One who is to be born 00:54:22.16\00:54:26.59 will be called the Son of God." 00:54:26.63\00:54:29.86 The Holy Spirit miraculously formed 00:54:29.90\00:54:33.97 the incarnate Christ in Mary, 00:54:34.00\00:54:37.67 and then He anointed Him for ministry. 00:54:37.71\00:54:41.14 Creation is attributed as much to the Holy Spirit 00:54:41.18\00:54:44.21 as it is to the Father and the Son. 00:54:44.25\00:54:46.38 Romans 8:11 says, 00:54:46.41\00:54:47.75 "The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, 00:54:47.78\00:54:51.15 who but a divine person 00:54:51.19\00:54:54.66 could have accomplished this." 00:54:54.69\00:54:58.89 I believe that the doctrine of the triune God 00:54:58.93\00:55:03.06 is an important matter. 00:55:03.10\00:55:06.20 The Bible plainly teaches 00:55:06.23\00:55:09.87 three divine persons 00:55:09.90\00:55:12.34 equal one divine being. 00:55:12.37\00:55:15.88 This is mysterious to us, 00:55:15.91\00:55:19.18 it is inexplicable to human race. 00:55:19.21\00:55:22.48 And although they were co-eternal, co-essential, 00:55:22.52\00:55:26.02 and co-equal, 00:55:26.05\00:55:27.39 we see a historic submission 00:55:27.42\00:55:30.13 in the history of ministry on earth. 00:55:30.16\00:55:33.46 Christ submitted to the Father's will, 00:55:33.50\00:55:36.10 the Holy Spirit submits to Jesus' authority. 00:55:36.13\00:55:40.24 This is the absolute humility 00:55:40.27\00:55:44.91 of the Godhead. 00:55:44.94\00:55:46.71 There is no competition. 00:55:46.74\00:55:49.34 This is other centered love. 00:55:49.38\00:55:52.81 The advent of the Holy Spirit 00:55:52.85\00:55:55.15 is the fulfillment of divine promises 00:55:55.18\00:55:57.45 in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. 00:55:57.49\00:55:59.69 He came to witness under Christ exaltation 00:55:59.72\00:56:03.09 to take Christ place on earth, 00:56:03.12\00:56:05.03 and to continue and complete the cause of Christ, 00:56:05.06\00:56:08.86 to ignore the Holy Spirit 00:56:08.90\00:56:11.70 as the distinct third person of the Godhead, 00:56:11.73\00:56:15.70 dishonors and grieves Him. 00:56:15.74\00:56:18.57 We're not giving Him the glory do His name. 00:56:18.61\00:56:21.44 He's our helper, our comforter, our teacher, our counselor, 00:56:21.48\00:56:26.21 and our advocate. 00:56:26.25\00:56:27.78 And His great work of salvation is so necessary for us. 00:56:27.82\00:56:32.35 He's the one who sanctifies, exhorts, inspires, and guides. 00:56:32.39\00:56:37.03 I believe the Holy Spirit 00:56:37.06\00:56:39.19 is the third personal power of the Godhead. 00:56:39.23\00:56:43.77 God's presence is in the cube. 00:56:43.80\00:56:49.30 One times one, 00:56:49.34\00:56:52.24 times one equals one, 00:56:52.27\00:56:55.98 one to the power of three. 00:56:56.01\00:57:00.58 The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 00:57:00.62\00:57:06.19 one to the power of three. 00:57:06.22\00:57:10.76 My, Brothers and Sisters, I want to encourage you, 00:57:10.79\00:57:15.00 as I did, go back, restudy, make sure that 00:57:15.03\00:57:19.93 what you're holding on to is truth. 00:57:19.97\00:57:23.84 God's presence is in the cube, 00:57:23.87\00:57:26.88 and I don't want you to miss it. 00:57:26.91\00:57:29.54 God bless. 00:57:29.58\00:57:30.91
